Reviews (page 6 of 8)

At the start of the album I was thinking I might rate this a 4. I was really enjoying it. Also definitely recognized this album gets sampled a lot. Then it just started to drag on too long, with too much of the same sound. However, overall still a fun listen I don't regret. Very specific to a time, and one I do think I will revisit sometime.

Doesn't really work as an album though the individual songs are pretty enjoyable. As an album it is just too long. As an album this would be 2 stars, but the individual songs are worth 4 stars. So lets compromise at 3 stars.

Fun times

Instrumental covers of popular songs played on bongos sounds like a truly horrendous idea, but somehow this works surprisingly well. It does overstay its welcome rather quickly though.

For bongo/instrumental covers of 60s songs. Better than I expected.

Damn this is actually iconic lmao

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Was it mostly just instrumental, funky, bongo-oriented covers? Yes. But it was done well, and in whatever case, it really did show off the art of drum-based percussion in an incredibly lively and exciting way. There are a couple of things that make this album significant, in my mind: First, it has been sampled many MANY times over the years. The work on this album is so good that others have used it time and time again for their own albums. And second, there is some degree of beauty in the fact that this album was recorded with a bunch of unknown musicians who still remain more or less unknown today. How is it that such a well-regarded bongo album be created by unknown musicians? Well, here we are. To me, this speaks to people all over the world having immense amounts of talent in an area and never really being identified or recognized for it. Overall, a somewhat mysterious album that despite its humble roots, persists today as a heavily influential work.

This was fine. Good musicianship and it sounds fun for a couple songs, but this isn't something I enjoy in large doses. 2.9

So that's where that was from. This is enjoyable and unique, but I can't imagine wanting to spend too much time with it.

Great vibe, great tunes. Leans in the direction of cheesiness, but turns away at the last moment in the direction of a cool party album. It could have gone down in history as the 70's equivalent of Black Lace et al, but it appears not. I'm glad, as i liked it! Probably the best version of Apache I've ever heard. I'm not sure whether every album should have a Bongo duel mind you.

bongos.

Very interesting!

lot of fucking bongos. Too many fucking bongos, if I'm honest. 3/5.

A fun little funky album. It definitely helps having some recognizable songs. I am assuming there are a lot of samples from this album. The one I recognized was the drum break in Last Bongo in Belgium was used in Massive Attack's Angel and the Beastie Boys' Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun.

Kind of a novelty album, but it's been sampled so many times it's hard not to love it. Decent horns and production though.

Hip-hoppy beats with some variety of instrumentation on top

by all rights, i should love this, but it just doesn't really do that much for me! hard to put my finger on it, but it's just missing some sort of oomph. feels kind of paint-by-numbersy, which is obviously an opinion i can only have with 50 years of hindsight of music no doubt influenced by it and having heard Apache sampled a million times, but i never claimed to have rational opinions. if somebody put it on i wouldn't complain but I'll probably never reach for it myself

I enjoyed recalling all the songs that sampled from this album. Especially Apache & Last Bongo in Belgium.

Its kind of wild an album of covers is on this list. Its fine but yea not sure it should be on here.

A good instrumental album

I’ve never heard of this album or artist before, but this was a fun and unique album. It took me a minute, but I eventually realized that I’ve heard “Apache” sampled numerous times in other works, with a lot of those works being albums that I’ve reviewed. I loved how the main melody was repeated with different instruments throughout the song. “Let There Be Drums” was great too. The guitar playing on this song was probably my favorite on the whole album. It sounded like a funky Led Zeppelin tune. I liked the more varied sounds on “Last Bongo in Belgium,” “Raunchy ’73,” and the band’s take on “In A Gadda Da Vida” as well. The horns, woodwinds, and organ playing really opened up the overall sound of the album on these three tracks. Overall, this was a decently fun funk album. I think my biggest complaint about it is that the songs would kind of wear on me by the time they ended. By that point, the bongos felt like a gimmick. At times, they provided a unique flair, but they would eventually just blend into the background. This album was a lot like Tubular Bells to me: it was unique and interesting at times, and I'm glad I listened to it, but I can't see myself getting drawn back to this album at any point.

Who asked Robert Dimery to put this on the list, Matthew McConaughey? This album was ... fine. Kind of fun, even. Did I *need* to hear it in my lifetime? Eh. There are a ton of good cover/tribute bands out there. I'm not sure what makes this one stand out besides the fact that they're apparently a go-to source for hip-hop samples — so what? 3/5 — it's not bad, good for background music. But who really cares? I don't.

Apache was great, but then the album starts to fall off quite a bit. Not bad but not great.

Very pleasant listen on a Friday afternoon

Bongos. Hmm. Another completely unexpected album in this listnof 1001 I must listen to before I die. This was actually reasonably listenable although the bongos were a bit of a distraction at times. Inagoddadavita (sp) was an utter surprise!

Day110 - i don’t know the bongo band but i’ve heard these songs In rap and hip hop for the last forty years

Enjoyable versions of some classics

viele bongos.. trotzdem nit schlecht

Certainly a historic document, I'm not a hip hop head and I recognize a lot of the samples. The drumming is top notch. A little one note.

This is cool. Not bad. I like it.

Bongos... ok. I mean, I'm never going to put "Bongo Rock" on for myself, but I guess this is cool.

two swords. the bongs are too boring, i need more daring combinations.

a bit suburban . not a virtuoso bonga album. good solos ands calls and replies by track 5 ( yeah they took a while to get going !- man this should have been the opening - most people lose interest after 5 tracks of lobby music on a DRUM album! Drum music served up by a committee.

Never heard of this lot, but love the music. I’m familiar with Preston Epps, the dude who wrote Bongo Rock in the 50’s. I see it’s been used in several films, most notably Julien Temple’s Absolute Beginners (1986), which featured Bowie. I enjoyed this a lot.

Enjoyed the listen. Really good bongo album. Not sure how often I’d relisten to it, though. 3/5!

- Dudes rock - it’s good vibes, fun covers, and lots of bongos

Truly incredible

well arranged, and performed but a whole album is just. too much bongo!

I was kinda feeling it

They really are incredible bongos.

Not my thing, to much funk and no lyrics, but the ability of the musicians is undeniable

No unenjoyable but not sure why this was on the list. If this has made it then surely Richard Cheese or Elvana have to definitely be on here. Maybe these guys were first. Definitely didn't need to last 80 minutes though. 2.5*

Good for instrumentals, I just don’t like pure instrumentals.

Fun sound, but not enough variety from track to track.

Funky, instrumentals with a classic opening track everyone would know in one form or another

Bangin' bongos! Bongolicious beats and bongotastic rhythms, bravo!

OK but a bit repetitive after a few tracks

All instrumental and mainly covers. Good background music. 2.9/5 listened 2x

Typical 70s. It's a side project. What's the goal? Point? Who knows. Is it fun and easy to listen to? Yeah. Beyond that I cannot judge the merits of it at all.

chill background music. unoffensive and relaxing.

Dueling bongos was my favorite song on the album.

The bongos were fun, a great little addition to the tracks but wasn’t invested enough 3.5

a bongo-forward cover album … what are we doing here? it was fine.. mad at the guy who made this list rn

Not enough bongos… Cool to see where some samples came from tho

I don’t know about this. It’s fun I guess and the creator wasn’t taking himself too seriously. And it influenced hip hop. So I cut it some slack

Stick with it. The funky payoff is worth it.

Slightly ruined by God awful and repetitive TV ads. Imagine it was carnage when this came on the jukebox back in the 70s though. 3.5/5

Pretty fun but kinda ruined by the usage in films and ads now.

This was good, but not something I'm going to regularly put on. Incredible source of samples though.

I mean, it’s a Bongo band what can I say.

Kinda enjoyed most of it - more background than engaged with it. Not bad

I Hope I’m not offending anyone here, but the album is boring. Every song sounds similar

A fun listen.

There were certainly a lot of bongos

That’s a shit ton of bongos. Still served as great background music while reading!

Enjoyable but is it groundbreaking? Probably not. Unique though.

Immediately recognized the first song Apache. This is a fun album, lots of bongos. It’s worth reading the wiki page to get the backstory of this one.

Blind album and artist. Cover compilation? It sounded interesting for sure and I am glad I tried to this style, but I probably wouldn't come back to this.

Basically a bunch of bongo-fied rock songs. Pretty nice.

Enjoyed this, never heard of the group or album before but some parts of songs are so recognisable they have clearly been sampled. Glad I listened but not one I’ll add to my frequent rotation.

I have high hopes for this being a very vibey album 🤞🏼 I was correct, a lot at once but a great part of a playlist.

Can't believe I'm saying this about an album called Bongo Rock from the Incredible Bongo Band, but there was a little too much Bongo in this. That being said, I enjoyed the album quite a lot and will defs get some singles from this into rotation but not an album that needs another full listen. Straight 3/5 Fav track: Bongolia

The beginning was awesome but in the end it was too much. Half the length would have been enough to prove the point here.

I like this more for its influence then for how good it actually is. It has some good tracks tho.

Surprisingly decent. Given the name of the band, I thought I was in for something really weird. Instead, it was just some typical 1970s rock with some occasional bongos thrown in. It's not amazing, but it is somewhat unique.

BONGOS! Parece el tipo de album que escucharía Bob Belcher la verdad

Bongos.

bongoed up for real

What a strange album - very 1970s (and so very dated). An album of covers of popular songs from the era heavily featuring bongo drums, conga drums, rock drums, and brass - includes their version of "Apache", "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", and "Wipeout". Weird.

Microsoft Sample Msuic - Kalimba

bongo cat

I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I had feared a bunch of Maynard G. Krebs sitting in a circle playing bongos, but was treated to songs I recognized played well.

Decent listen

Instrumental. Funk, rare groove, R&B. Amena. Un poco cansino al final.

I thought I might like this better. So good but not great.

Just some fun bongo music. It was far too long, but at least I didn’t hate it half way through. Probably won’t listen again, but wasn’t as bad as I expected. 6/10 Top 3: 1. Apache 2. Pipeline 3. Dueling Bongos

Decent background music. Thought I would like it a lot more at the get go, but the novelty wore off fairly quickly.

i was skeptical going into this. now I'm a believer.

What a great concept - more bongoes!

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would!

Good, but got old really fast. Would be better to watch live.

Thanks to this album, I've learned that bongo is only good in moderation. I think the Incredible Bongo Band realized that too, because some songs have the bongo parts at a lower volume. Plus...is this some kind of compilation album? It's pretty much the same tracklisting as the "40 Years Of..." compilation. Kind of weird for the 1001 albums list. Not saying it's not good music.

Have to admit I went into this album with a bit of hesitation just because, generally speaking, I'm not a big fan of bongos, congas, and those kinds of percussion instruments. But this album has some really good tracks on it and is more listenable and fun than expected. It's helped me to qualify my general dislike of bongos, congas, etc. -- I realized what I don't like about them is when they sound incongruous and out of place; i.e., when they feel like an add-on in some musical setting to my ears. Anyway, there are definitely some moments on some tracks when the sound still annoyed me, but overall there are such skilled performances here on all instruments that it's a good listening experience for me.

It was fun, fitted today's mood

Kinda cute album, a bit swingy I recognise the first song, it was sampled in that hip hop song that goes "jump on it, jump on it, jump on it" but I cant remember the name of it and I cba searching

What a surprise!

Bangers in every track. Very cool and fun music for jamming, dancing, or general party time.

Weird, won't be listening to again

It has it's moments. The bongo theme is kinda funny, but it is possible to have too much bongo. 'Bongolia' is one of the best track names I've heard though

Enjoyed it!

Pleasant drumbeats and covers. No crazy displays of vision or talent that I noticed, this felt like a solid jam session through a through.

It started off strong and absolutely hooked me. Remnants of liquid liquids, caravan and the clashes carjamming came to mind on the first few tracks. After that, it got pretty Repetitive. I'm sure at some point I'll back track and listen to this again

Favourite song: Apache

The opening track "Apache" is one of the most influential songs in hip hop, and there were parts I fully expected the Sugarhill Gang to jump on it. It was cool hearing all the parts that were sampled by hip hop artists, like "Last Bongo in Belgium" in the Beastie Boys' "Looking Down a Barrel of a Gun." These studio musicians take a bunch of classic rock and swing tunes throw in some instrumental funk and bongos on top. A lot of it sounds like a generic soundtrack with some cool bongos. There's only so much you can do with bongos. In some tracks they do ok replacing traditional drums. In other songs, they feel a bit forced. But there are a few that impressed me. "In a Gadda Da Vida" was insane, especially the spacey horn segment. As for the songs themselves, I thought the first 9 were mostly great (with several dull moments). After that, nothing stuck out to me.

Fave tracks: Apache, Bongolia, Last Bongo in Belgium, In A Gadda da Vida 3.5/5

I enjoyed the vibes of this album, not a huge bongo rock person but some of the songs slapped.

For an album of heavy on the bongos funk-covers this was pretty enjoyable but I don’t believe this is any way one of the best 1001 albums of all time.

Pretty fun for 33 minutes. 6/10

Instrumental. Funk, rare groove, R&B. Amena. Un poco cansino al final.

Entertaining though a bit of a novelty album. The cover of Satisfaction is gold.

Je crois avoir confondu Bongo Rock avec l'album Django Django dans ma critique, je vous renvoie donc à cette dernière.

Bongo-cover rock, funk, pop, masser af samples taget herfra

fun listen. certainly a product of its time, plenty of disco/funk influence… and of course, bongos! highlights: “apache”, “in-a-gadda-da-vida”, “okey dokey”.

I kind of expected this to be a joke, but the joke was on me. It's bongo... but it's good. It's not "sit and listen with the headphones on" kind of stuff, but it's a killer day at the beach soundtrack.

I actually sorta dug this.

Apache ist der Welthit der Rest kommt nicht dran ist aber trotzdem sehr gut

Interesting adaptations

Some great bangers in here. It was quite fun, but it does get a bit too much after a while.

This was probably a top 10 instrumental album I’ve ever listened to. This was captivating right from the start as the Apache sound was so familiar. And then it hit me. Jump on it. A lot of great instrumental tracks that were used by hip hop on this album. The most surprising was the roots sample that was used. An absolutely great beat. Overall this was fun to listen to and I’d revisit. 7.0/10

Inarguably cheesy, but it's fun all the way through. Don't really see myself coming back to it, but what for is it's worth a listen best part(s): Apache, In A Gadda Da Vida worst part(s): Three minute bongo solo

This was fun….in small doses.

It‘s long enough funny and deep before getting annoying 3.4

Interesting but not something I would enjoy hearing if it came up in my music shuffle.

Average!

Listened to this. Most of it is kinda forgettable because its mainly bongo lead.Apache is 2000x better with bongos though.I dont really see why anyone would listen to any of the other songs thoigh, when they could just listen to the originals. Most of which have vocals as well.Like who listens to the bongo version of satisfaction instead of the regular version.

Liked most of their covers, percussions are great

Very influential for all the samples used in other songs, but not amazing to listen to on its own.

Inspiration for air drums from outer bongolia by jedi knights, for that alone worthwhile

I did not want to like this. I did not want to listen to an hour and 18 minutes of this. But I dis both. (I actually quite enjoyed, but don’t tell anyone)

Better than I was anticipating

Diversão garantida com uso inteligente das percussões.

Are you missing bongos in your life? Did you think the words to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida needed to be removed and replaced with bongos? Do you have a fever and the only prescription is more bongos? Then listen to Bongo Rock.

I had quite the dilemma with this album, because it may surprise you (not really) to learn that ranking purely instrumentals with a bongo as the background beat as kind of difficult. I knew I enjoyed what I was hearing, and not too much past that, but I could totally see the enjoyment and novelty of this album. I believe I'll go down the middle with my ranking, as it just seems the most accurate.

Bongos abound

6 albums in a row from between 1968-1974. Help me. This one was quite fun and maybe the most 70s one yet, in concept - a band based around the bongos? But whooo boy an album from the last 50 years would be nice.

Instrumental. Basado sobre todo en percusión y una sección de viento. Tiene versiones de temas conocidos. Se hace pesado.

Honestly this fucking slaps like hands smacking the stretched skins of some bongos. Not exactly something id listen to when driving around but great background music! 3/5

This feels like a 70s movie soundtrack. Lots of bongos as advertised. An endearing novelty that puts a smile on your face as you hear a familiar melody and start to recognize the covers. Not an everyday listen but fun to play for friends.

ok, this was wayyyy better than expected. Some definite grooves on this one. Each song sounds familiar and for good reason, they took some good songs and made them Bongo anthems and in other cases, others have used tracks from this album in their hip hop albums. This could be the biggest surprise of the year! 3.5/5

Eka olin >:/ Sit olin :D Bongot :DD

Bongos have never rocked this hard before or since. Not something I see myself coming back to, but it was fun hearing some tracks that have gone on to be used in some pretty well known samples.

Pretty solid.

It was pretty good at first, but the novelty wears off pretty quickly.

Best Song: Last Bongo in Belgium. Maybe it's just because I live in Belgium now, but these bongos really did speak to me. Worst Song: In A Gadda Da Vida. There is zero reason to listen to this over the original. Overall: This weird blend of covers and samples of existing songs mixed with iconic original drum beats that have gone on to be sampled all over hip hop. The covers are categorically worse than the original versions of the songs. There are bits here and there that really snap, and I can see why so much has been sampled since its release, but more often than not it ends up feeling more like a bunch of ingredients than a cohesive, complete album.

Nice album, not sure why it's a "must listen" though

A 70s album / but with BONGOS!! Combine Stevie Wonder and 60s Contemporary Jazz and just add bongos. You technically have a “BONGO” album.

Opened with the classic Apache, awesome, and loved their version of In a Gadda da Vida. Overall its not a bad album, a few tracks like Duelling Bongos, Pipeline and Raunchy 73 lacking substance as tracks, but the rest makes up for it. Would happily select and want to listen to this album again.

It's great for a few songs at a time but a whole album is a push to get through.

Decent grooves. Another good background record.

I was putting off listening to this album for over a year…and tbh…it’s not nearly as rough as I thought it would be. In fact, if this thing didn’t primarily consist of covers, I might even have this higher. As it stands tho, this was a pretty decent, funky listen that definitely exceeded expectations, even if it’s not something that’ll really stick with me in the long run.

It was pretty good. Had never listened to a album that was exclusively bongo based. Interesting.

Fun engaging album. I was bopping to this all day long. It starts off with Apache, which is just fun. There were, weirdly, a couple random covers of songs like 'In A Gadda D Vida' and 'Wipeout'. They were surprising.

Enjoyed listening to this with my son. He's in band and plays percussion, so he really enjoyed hearing all the sounds and telling me what they were.

For an instrumental album I was actually liking this a lot. Very groovy. Unfortunately it was just too long which drops it to a 3

Good beats, well recorded.

Bongo Rock does what it says, a bunch of good-time covers with heavy bongo influence. Hard to hate, makes you smile. Not original but also kinda original, I dig it. 3/5.

Really enjoyed that, but too long

Highlights: "Apache," the airplane flanger fuzz bass on "Last Bongo in Berlin" Not only a centerpiece of our Imaginary '70s, but a liminal space for the beginning of hip-hop. Excellent production for performances by consummate professionals. As a matter of personal taste, I hated listening to this, but it also wasn't meant to be its own object. Historically critical. It's not fair to exclude Ennio Morricone or Ryuichi Sakamoto from the list when this is here. It's not technically a soundtrack because it's not for *one* film, but then that makes it a compilation. A compilation of covers. Frustrating litigation here.

The album's a bit long, but man, did it make me feel cool

Needs more cowbell.

Det är riktigt gött sound ändå. Men ingen behöver en styv timme instrumental bongorock

I was surprised I liked it

Not Really sure what happened here.

Blijkbaar de basis voor heeeeel veel sampling in vooral hip-hop. Lachen om een keertje te luisteren en aardige groove met veel bongos.

This album has some genuinely great musicianship and some great arranging but it feels a little gimmicky to me despite how earnest the production and performance is. It does however give a very concise statement of 70s instrumental R&B.

It was ok, good morning music to get you going

Quite enjoyable album but nothing particularly interesting: good but not excellent in my opinion.

What can I say? But I have no cred. I liked this much more than yesterday's offering by the Rolling Stones. Am I a tired of it by the appearance of Wipeout? Yes, I am. Did most of it serve a groove and fulfill the promise of the opening track? Indeed. Does it rate higher than the aforementioned Rolling Stones record? Probably not, but only because we don't do half stars here. If we did, this would beat Sticky Fingers by half a star.

I finally did it. I finally listened to the Bongo Album. Yet, it lacked the bongos.

Listened Before? N Interesting album with an interesting story. It sounds like 70s stock music which I guess is what it is. I like it for nostalgia. Would listen again set to moans lol. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Okey Dokey

2.5 but no fuggin half stars on this boat

I cant say I was expecting anything with this band name and title but it was way better than expected. Especially the first track (Apache) obviously.

Funkdafied elevator music.

I enjoyed this overall. Very 70s-ish, reminiscent of a lot of the great instrumental songs that were getting airplay in that decade, e.g. Popcorn, the Theme from S.W.A.T., The Hustle, etc. I didn't enjoy the extended drum solos, but luckily there weren't too many of them. I may have liked their version of In A Gadda Da Vida better than the original. 3 stars.

interesting...

Wow, very funky and awesome. Good fun!

Nice idea but the tunes at the front were certainly the best. A decent record

you've been bongdo'd

Interesting & fun, but more of a curiosity than something I'll listen to again. I can see it's importance in the development of rap etc, but that's not enough to make it a great album for me.

Leuke muziek, doet me een beetje denken aan een drumband met blazerssectie. Het nummer "Apache" is wel heel bekend. ***

Surprisingly great

Definitely some bangers, but also a lot of cheese. Middle of the road for the album as a whole

Apache gets it 3 stars. Fun to listen to, although the covers get a little tired by the end.

That’s a lot of bongo.

not at all what i expected, probably wouldn't listen again but i enjoyed a few songs. the last bongo in belgium remix is worth another listen perhaps

'Bongo Rock' by the 'Incredible Bongo Band' does not scream 'my kind of music'. However, it's a joyful 35 minutes of fun instrumental music. The cover of Apache is very familiar from various TV shows, trailers and adverts. My only criticism is that it contradicts the Trade Descriptions Act as bongos aren't the 'hero' instrument or that prominent on most of the tracks, but I'll let it off - I can't think of too many occasions when I've though 'what this song needs is more bongos'. Rating: 4 3.5/5 Playlist track: Apache Date listened: 26/10/22

This is quite fun isn't it! I'm not sure about listening to a whole album intently though. You can certainly have too much of a good thing in this instance haha. Cool sound though, very unique.

Well this was a laugh wasn't it! Have to say a little one dimensional after you heard half the album. Would be great music for a beach bar

it was good fun but it was a bit much. Can imagine it as background music somewhere but not sure I've ever put it on

6/10 was really just bongo solos for quite a bit, but it was ok. some cool moments with the other instruments tho

Amazing that parts of this album have been sampled so much and make up the basis of so many songs I love. Listening to this I can't help but feel that this just a novelty record that got lucky in its second life and the DJs that came after are the trust masters. Taking throwaway breaks and making something better

A little much bongo

Bongos - check

Did not know this album. Nice 70s-film-music style. Includes some very well executed cover songs.

i’ve probably enjoyed this funk the most out of the ones so far. having said that, it’s cool but not that cool

Well, this is better than expected. The bongos reign supreme here, but apart from that, this is an instrumental soundscape that screams "70s" all over in a good way. The worst tracks are the two remixes at the end (which I suspect weren't on the original release). Go figure. 3/5

Bongo Rock might be the funniest album title we've gotten so far. This was a fun listen, but not something that I would need to go back and hear again. I think there is much better funk out there.

Some sweet jams. Nice to work to.

No words but great instrumentals of good songs

i mean it just exists, i enjoyed some of what I heard but it was so stale 5/10

I listened to what seems to be a double album - nearly 80 minutes. Each time I felt it was getting a little repetitious something brilliant started!

feels like royalty free music with amazing bongo solos

It's fun an a silly 70s kind of way.

This was an interesting listen of Bongo covers.

a nice set of covers but so slow, and not even that much bongo...

Interesting covers, enjoyable but probably won’t listen again

Conclusion: bongo cat. Super musique d’ambiance mais je vais sûrement très vite oublié cet album. Note: 3.5

Started off great, excellent musicianship but to listen to the whole thing straight through was a bit too much bongo for me, better in small doses.

for an album named bongo rock its a pleasant surprise. Although a bunch of the songs are carried more by other instruments than bongo.

Tänäpäivänä levyn kansissa taitaa usein olla tarra: ”sisältää maailman tunnetuimman hiphop-samplen”! Lisähuomiona vielä että oikeella levyllähän on vaan noi kahdeksan ekaa kappaletta, eli kysees on aika sopivan mittainen platta. Sitten itse levyyn. Apache ja in a gadda da vida on mahtavii vetoja, mutta muutenhan tää bongoilu kyllä menee snadisti yli. Samplematskuna ja yksittäisinä biiseinä dimangia mutta albumikokonaisuutena hieman ohuehko. Annetaan silti kolmonen! 3/5

Täähän oli ihan hauska. Ei edes niin puhdasta bongoilua, kun kuvittelin.

Huh huh tiukat 80 min bongottelua :D kyllähän se pistää punttiin vipatusta, vaikka ehkä vähän alkaa kyllästyttää loppua kohti.

Reminds me of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

As advertised

Such bongo! Such fun. Apache is the show stealer and the rest starts to get a bit too much with In A Gadda Da Vida being another highlight.

Somewhat one-note, but a good note. Or beat. Horns plus bongos plus covers equals sample heaven.

I love drums so this was right up my street but even for all that it doesn’t deserve a 4* rating so another 3 ( boringly) from me !

It’s got bongos that’s for sure

Lots of bongo's and 70's jamming including a sax

Slaps. The bongos. Not a 5 star slapper but fun

Mezcla de ritmos africanos con variedad de melodías. Rítmico, pero un tanto monótono. Instrumentalmente bueno.

Excessive Bongo

I think this is one of those albums that deserves to be on this 1,001 list for its originality even if it's not overly impressive. Like, "you gotta hear this album, it's got a ton of bongo in it." Glad I got the chance to hear it and could pass it on in the future. But it's just okay. After Bongolia (great intro), I thought Apache might have had the best bongo work. The drum solo from In A Gadda Da Vida was kind of cool with bongo as the primary. Last Bongo in Belgium was a letdown (other than the name, great tongue-in-cheek song title) - not enough percussion, other instruments got in the way and weren't great. Bongo Rock was pretty good but at times unbalanced and too heavy on other instruments. Dueling Bongos was also a bit of a letdown in the other direction - too much percussion. It was missing something; great idea, just not quite there in execution.

Vraiment rock et le bongo complemente bien les chansons, cependnant, on dirait en album de reprise avec bongo, je n’ai pas verifie mais je crois que c’est ce qui amene beaucoup de musicalites a l’album. 3.75

The bongos do kinda go crazy.

This was fun for the first 45 minutes but it was just too long.

A bit like muzak. I actually liked most of this. Good background times while working.

So they play bongos uh? Nah this was actually very easy to like

Pretty good, but of interest more as spot the sample than as an album to enjoy. The iron butterfly cover is sweet though

Does more with a set of bongos than most bands achieve. Perhaps 3 tracks too long - but enough variety to take a listen on a long run...

I knew the first song really well which helped. After that I'd say it was good, but not amazing.

hip-hop samples

Good funk, on a metric of bongos, there were many. Funny to find out here that one sports Anthem was "Apache". Favourites: "Apache", "Bongolia, "Last Bongo in Belgium"

It's just so looonnnngggg. There are a decent amount of cool songs/grooves here, but the album just goes on and on without a ton of variation. I enjoyed the overall sound though, since it made me feel like I was in a 70s cop movie. Cut out the duds and its a very cool album. 6/10

It’s weird that a sound more likely to evoke sun drenched California surf or Hawaiian beats turns out, thanks to Apache, to be synonymous with New York and that hip hop sound. That break, though… luxuriate in that percussion, the organ, the horns and be transported back to a time of break dancing, graffiti, mcing and djing. What a find that break was, what a time to be alive… In truth, this is little more then a goofy novelty record - no work of art here- but I guarantee it is one of the funnest albums in the list.

Yep one of the most sampled beats of all time. Some good stuff on here but it get's old pretty quick.

Kind of ridiculous; not bad or anything, just...kind of ridiculous.

It's an interesting listen, if tiring and overlong. The album opens with "Apache," which is such an influential and prominently sampled track, though nothing else quite matches it for the rest of the nearly 80-minute duration.

A super fun album!

<Themeland Amusement Park, Stockton, California> Jeanine: Oh, no! I told them once, I told them a hundred times: put "Spinal Tap" first and "Puppet show" last. Derek: It's a morale builder, isn't it? Jeanine: We've got a big dressing room, though. David: What? Jeanine: Got a big dressing room here... David: Oh, we've got a bigger dressing room than the puppets? Oh, that's refreshing.. Viv: I've got some of this Mendocino Rocket Fuel, that's supposed to be really...... David: Can you play...excuse me, Viv, can you play a bassline, uh, like Nigel used to do on "Big Bottom", can you double that? You recall the lines in fifths? Viv: Oh, yeah. I've got two hands here, yeah I can do it. David: So, that's good, you can play that one. Derek: "Hole" is out, "Heavy" is out.... David: "Heavy-Hole" .... Derek: Right, right, right, right...."America" is out..... David: "America" we can't do, that's Nigel's tune, not my tune. Derek: We know, we know, we know, we know...That's a nice little set, isn't it, that's a cozy ten minutes. David: What are we going to do, we've got nothing to play here... Derek: I'll tell you what we're gonna have to do... David: What? Derek: Jazz odyssey! David: We're not going about to do a free-form jazz, uh, exploration in front of a festival crowd! --- Spinal Tap Mark II performs Jazz Odyssey --- ( in front of a festival "crowd" ) ... with bongos

Just felt like a really random entry until I did some research. Basically '70s TV show theme songs and covers with bongos, but there's a lot of talent in it, and it seems to be one of the most sampled albums ever, starting with Apache. This was a fun listen.

The bongos leave a lasting impression, like fingerprints on an abandoned handrail.

Actually quite enjoyed this, but there's only so long you can listen to bongos for.

This was interesting. Not entirely my cup of tea but I liked it more than I expected to.

Enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Whoa, another quirky choice! I'm so glad this wasn't clickbait, it's actually a rock album centered around bongos. Of course we all know and love "Apache," famously sampled and flipped into a hip hop/dance staple. It's heralded as the "national anthem of hip hop," which is crazy because I just know these guys wouldn't have expected that kind of legacy. I didn't know the lore behind that track--though this version is the most famous and heavily sampled, it's a cover. There's a '60s version by a group called The Shadows that's definitely worth a listen. As a matter of fact, most of this album is covers. Beyond Apache, there are some other great tracks on here too. This is a gimmick done right, I enjoyed it. Favorite tracks: Apache, Bongolia, Dueling Bongos, Okey Dokey. Album art: Very simple, gets the point across with no confusion. Again, not clickbait, and I appreciate that. Nothing too special but it fits. 3.5/5

Fun but not really that substantial.

3.0 - I'm not enough of a hip hop-head to appreciate this album's obvious impact on DJing, breakbeats, etc. Apparently this album started as a soundtrack project for a 70s B-Film, and that's exactly the vibe I'm getting. Car chases, foxy women, afros, flared pants, etc. It's solid background music but I'm not feeling anything beyond nostalgia for Saturday afternoon TV movies.

Thought it would just be bongos. Listened all the way thru. Great guitar riffs. I'd listen again someday.

started cool, interesting how often it's sampled, but drug on.

They sure do like bongos.

Some stunning musicianship on offer here. Not an album I'd specifically seek out to listen to again in its entirety, bit plenty of individual tracks have been added to my Spotify playlists.

Bongos!

I was a little surprised that I had the thought listening to this, "where are the drums." There's something really weird in the mixing that makes them seem hidden, when weren't they supposed to be the point of the band? Anyway, it did come out in "Dueling Bongos" and I really liked the way that "Satisfaction" Sounded.

The Incredible Bongo Band are exactly what they sound like - an incredible band of various drum players. They were coalesced to create an instrumental soundtrack and they chose to make it funky by using mostly drums. The band's first album was Bongo Rock which contained a lot of different covers of songs, all performed with drums. This album became very popular in the hip-hop genre because artists would use these bongo drum songs as samples in their own music. It's an interesting album and a lot of fun to listen to if you enjoy drums!

De pogga nog

Even as a drummer, I found this too much drums - not by much, but just a wee bit too much. Enjoyed it a bit, and spotting samples that were used elsewhere was great fun.

Muy bueno!

Funk, Big Band Kram. Hauptsächlich Covers anderer Bands. Viel Surf.

Considerably more strut and bounce in my stride whilst listening to this one

Surprisingly good for what is essentially a joke album. Not gonna put it on always by any means, but I could bop to it while it is on.

That is a lot of drums

Surprisingly not too bad

Was not bad but not my style and a bit too much background music style to be outstanding

Great rhythms. Dig the Polly rhythms. But I don't get why this is something I should hear before I die. I don't know that it was fundamental in changing the music world and it certainly is full of classics. It's just covers with bongos. It's not that I didn't enjoy listening to it, but wouldn't have felt robbed if I died and hadn't heard it.

This kinda feels like a novelty album, so I feel like that limits it’s score, still can’t say I didn’t dig the song selection, in a Gaada da vida brought it and of course Apache has been immortalized now as “jump on it”

giving it a 3 just for the sample

Rock songs done on funky bongos. Yeah.

Not the most original of albums, but there’s nothing wrong with adding bongos to familiar tracks!

Once again an album that's very different from what I would usually listen to, but on the whole a good experience. I was unsure whether to give this 3 or 4 stars, but then the second to last track Raunchy was so bad, that I'm rounding down to 3.

This is kind of fun, although musically it comes off as rather corny/dated. Bongos are tight though. I don't see myself coming back to this. But it was worth it to hear "Apache," which was pretty great. I've got to say, I'm more impressed with the artists who were able to mine these songs for some excellent samples over the years. Fave Songs: Apache, Dueling Bongos, In a Gadda Da Vida, Let There Be Drums

It's like all your favourite songs but with like, bongos, man

So, this is pretty cool, eh? Had never heard of this band. I'm definitely going to keep this in mind for instances when upbeat and funky instrumental music is needed. I just kept thinking while listening that this would be a) good music for a backyard BBQ and b) good music for a Quentin Tarantino film. Wherein a skinny, attractive female lead brutally murders >100 people.

Good if you like Bongos?

Needs more bongo

Новшество есть, на сегодня не прикололо

either genius or terrible and I can't figure out which...so going to have to split the difference.

Not at all what I was expecting! While there's still some cheesy arrangements here and there, this LP takes its premise to the extreme and doesn't let up. Bongos forever y'all

This album has a track called Dueling Banjos followed by a bongo-trumpet-sax cover of In A Gadda Da Vida. It's all played straight, with no sense of irony. Apparently a bunch of studio musicians got together and made a bongo album for fun [citation needed, I guess?], and then the hip hop world got wind of it and mined it for samples. The music actually wasn't bad, and I'm almost mad about that, because it would have been easier to dunk on it. Instead, I'm just wondering why anybody would need to listen to it 48 years later. What a baffling album. Best track: Apache

Fun, cheesy, schmaltzy, boring - and altogether quite accomplished, this album is all of these things at different moments. Some of the material here isn't bad at all - that's a hot version of 'Apache', a very decent accounting of 'In A Gadda Da Vida', and 'Bongo Rock' has rolls along nicely. The kind of music that late night radio hosts use in their intro beds. The kind of music you can picture the Gold Digger Dancers high-kicking their way through on a Paul Lynde TV special. It's no 'Night On Disco Mountain', but what is?
