Reviews (page 7 of 8)

It's good, but this kind of album just doesn't stick with me. 3.

Post punk 80s sound.

Ehrlicher Rock mit einigen atmosphärisch verspielten Songs, die mir allerdings nicht so gut gefallen haben.

Unterstütze meine eher gehobene Laune während der Arbeit. Aber haut mich auch nicht vom Hocker. Nett

Well produced late / post-punk. A mix of upbeat and peppy tunes with driving guitar lines and four on the floor kick. Good music for running.

This could be my jam for a day or two. Good mix of punk and new wave. Not gonna rush out and buy their albums, but nice to know they're on YouTube.

its an alright album but besides 'That's entertainment' it lakes some magic to make it stand out

Was okay. Wouldn't rush back to it but it didn't piss me off either.

ok ish 3/5

Enjoyed it!

Yeah just punk/new wave, nothing really interesting going on, production sounds exactly as you'd expect. Catchy in places though, and great album length at 35min. 3/5.

Enjoyable but a little samey. Bass guitar is quality throughout.

I kinda hated this, but there were a couple of songs that saved it from being truly awful. Best track: That's Entertainment

Was very innocuous as background drive music.... Actually that's good

Just had Kilimanjaro also from 1980 by The Teardrops Explodes. At this point after listening to 3 tracks it has the same issues as that record which I did not like very much, but it does most of the things that did but better. No track overstays its due in a way, different from the last. About 2.5/5

3/5 - nothing too special; solid but not special

That's Entertaimment - is the most interesting composition of this album. It was curious for me to find out about this band

Mod-punk. Ni fu ni fa.

The intersection of all British rock

Lots of cool music and musical ideas here. The rhythm section is always tight and seems to always be doing something interesting. Most of the songs are pretty catchy but nothing here made me stop in my tracks.

Good shiz

The Jam: The Jam was an English mod revival/punk rock band during the 1970s and early 1980s, As of 2007, "That's Entertainment" and "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero?" remain the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK.[4] They released one live album and six studio albums, the last of which, The Gift, hit number one on the UK Albums Chart. When the group disbanded in 1982, their first 15 singles were re-released and all placed within the top 100.[5] While the Jam shared the "angry young man" outlook and fast tempo of the mid-1970s British punk rock movement, in contrast with it the band wore smartly tailored suits reminiscent of English pop bands in the early 1960s and incorporated mainstream 1960s rock and R&B influences into its sound, particularly from the Who's work of that period and also drew influence from the work of the Kinks and the music of American Motown. This placed the act at the forefront of the 1970s–1980s nascent Mod Revival movement. With many of the band's lyrics about working-class life,[6] Jam biographer Sean Egan commented that they "took social protest and cultural authenticity to the top of the charts."[7] The band drew upon a variety of stylistic influences over the course of their career, including 1960s beat music, soul, rhythm and blues, psychedelic rock, and 1970s punk and new wave. The trio was known for its melodic pop songs, distinctly English flavor, and mod image. The band launched the career of Paul Weller, who went on to form the Style Council and later his solo career. Weller wrote and sang most of The Jam's original compositions and played lead guitar, using a Rickenbacker 330. Bruce Foxton provided backing vocals and prominent basslines, which were the foundation of many of the band's songs, including the hits "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice" mainly using a Rickenbacker 4001 or a Fender Precision Bass, as well as, on rare occasions, an Epiphone Rivoli.

seemed average punk sound to me. The punk artists blend together.

Buen disco, muy movido

MMmmm Great Great Great Britain. Bra.

A good album by the jam. I was jamming

pretty cool sounding, nothing i would die to listen to tho !

Not a band or album I've really checked out before. I guess for context I'd say this sound fits in with music from The Buzzcocks, X, or Talking Heads from around this era. Maybe a bit on the poppier side, and definitely a more British feel. Production feels a little rough in a good way, like this is a "Peel Sessions" release from that era. The driving but basic bass lines and crashing cymbals and drums remind me of some early tracks from The Cure. I don't see myself falling in love with this one or coming back to it with much frequency, but it's interesting to check our and fleshes out some musical context for other bands in this era for me. Clicking though to Wikipedia links has been a fun part of this project for me in that regard. For example, I learned that Paul Weller described this is a pastiche of Revolver (Beatles) and Off The Wall (Micheal Jackson) when it was released, and that The Jam toured as a supporting act for The Clash in 1977, and that Weller played on Peter Gabriel's third album. Still, for me this feels like more of a good album to know about and a way to expand my knowledge of music than something I'm really going to fall in love with and want to play.

Older rock, kinda UK vibes. Not a fan of that distorted guitar/voice music. Didn't mind the composition, nice beats on some of the songs. Wasn't a total fan of the harmony voices either.

I've never explicitly listened to The Jam, only here and there in passing and always at parties with C in attendance, the Paul Weller freak :) My first listen didn't really click with me but I'm currently on a 3rd pass and I'm finding it yields a lot more than I'd initially thought. There are noticeable nods to The Who's early years combined with that 70s/early 80s uniquely British/aggressive sound that I didn't like as a kid but has really grown on me. Pretty Green, That's Entertainment, and Boy About Town are standouts. Not sure this will ever be an all-time favourite but I will definitely be coming back to this one in the future.

Dancy punk rock

Lots of good songs

So-so punk album

Always rated The Jam more as a singles rather than album band, and this re-listen confirmed the case for me. It's fine throughout, but only really Start and That's Entertainment shine brightly.

New Wave - Punk. 3 Sterne für den British accent, kanns aber nicht viel länger als 3,4 Songs hören

I didn't love Sound Affects, but liked a lot of similar tracks by The Jam that played afterwards.

3/5 nice album, but not nice enough

Punk/Soul?BT: Start, That's Entertainment, Boy About Town

Good album (1980).

El trak 9 me hizo cree que había una mosca, la buscaba y no la podía ver, hasta que me di cuenta que era la canción xD

Easy listen, very cool Guitar and Bass Set the House Ablaze was the stand out for me

i liked a few songs on here but overall it was pretty generic, and a lot of the parts that stood out didn't stand out in a good way. 6/10

I listened to this once and then proceeded to forget everything I had heard so put it on again. Still pretty forgettable and the vocals aren't great. 6

I knew and enjoyed a couple of the songs on here. The rest I wasn’t really fussed by. 3/5

MODs. Arseholes with bowl haircuts who think they are trendy with a side of racism? As you can tell I approach this one with an open mind. Unfortunately despite my preconceptions its actually ok. Have always found Paul Weller a bit hit and miss and this follows that pattern. Not many of the songs could be singles though and it lacks hooks in the album tracks, but when it hits it hits hard and hardest with That's Entertainment and Start (how is this not the opener of the album?!). Decent enough without ever being remarkable. 3/5

It's ok, the jam are a real best of band for me but there's some good stuff on here outside the hits

6/10. Good but forgettable

Buen disco con ritmos divertidos y alegres. Mezcla de pop-rock. Pioneros anglosajones en su estilo. Le falta algo más de chispa

Aggressively mediocre. There’s also something about this and other new wave that feels… claustrophobic? Not sure how else to put it. 5

I've only ever listened to the Jam on the radio. And they appear quite a bit, but only That's Entertainment. Very very heavy bass beats from the band. The first minute of Dream Time epitomizes the album's title?

'Pretty Green' and 'Thats Entertainment' are classics. I love the garage-rock sound, but ultimately found most of the other tracks forgettable

Good jams

yet another brit rock band on this list, but as was the same with Elastica and Cornershop, this was just ok.

i liked it, but nothing really stood out to me about it.

Energy. Some good songs. But did feel like it was missing... something.

not bad. good background music.

I’m a sucker for some UK post punk flavor and The Jam certainly exhibit some of that sound on this project. However, the moody bangers are few and far between. But I’m Different Now and Set The House Ablaze were the most electric entries on Sound Affects and were thus the most enjoyable to listen to. After this early flurry of kickass came a slew of underwhelming times that lacked that fizz. Man In The Corner Shop was a tasteful slow melody that definitely sounded like something Arctic Monkeys based their sound off of. In fact, a lot of this album sounds like an AM inspiration. It just doesn’t feel nearly as punchy. Still, a pretty cool album to play when you’re feeling a little rebellious.

good 3

sounds alright but overall rather generic for the period

not bad for post-punk

Good album. I only knew the hits previously, but liked the whole thing. Was expecting it all to just be straightforward vocals, guitars, bass and drums, but there were a few other interesting instrumental and noise-making elements in there. Solid songs - well structured, nice melodies, some great poppy hooks, good lyrics. Cool production as well, and the individual instruments all sound great. Would happily revisit this one.

OK. Nothing special.

Loved Pretty green and the overall vibe. Got a bit repetitive

First time listening. Some catchy tunes that I’d listen to again.

Achei um álbum bem mediano :( Só uma música me chamou atenção pelo baixo que era bem presente.

Album com a sonoridade da época, interessante.

Super cool vibes off of this one. Pretty Green is a world beater.

Innocent album

Interesting but every song sounds kinda the same

Pretty generic and bland. It’s a turkey sandwich. Interchangeable with so many other bands and albums.

I hate everything about this, except the music. I hate the band name, The Jam, what the hell is that?? They aren't a jam band, so is this just a practice album? Informal jam session?? It's dumb, that's what it is. The album name. Sound Affects. Get it? Isn't that clever? Lame. Album art. Okay I dont hate that, but I'm on a roll here. It's kinda generic I suppose...nah that's a reach. Album art is fine. Music, I can't hate it because is so damn generic and mundane. Kinda like a ham sandwich, it's good but it's just a ham sandwich. That's what this is, ham sandwich plain on white bread. What annoys me most is they spent all their energy coming up with a clever name and album title, then dialed it with the actual music. That really steams my clams. Now excuse me, there are some kids on my lawn I need to shake my fist at.

Bit of a snoozer with some great bass lines.

It's a bit surprising to me that this album is considered punk, because so much of it feels so bland. You can see some of the punk inspiration in the song structures, melodies, and lyricism, but the production is so flat and sterile that it ends up sucking the energy out of the music. Beyond that, a fair number of these songs feel a bit too predictable and low-energy for rock music of this era, and the mixing is noticeably uneven, with Paul Weller's vocals being buried beneath the bass and drums. It's a shame, because there are some flashes of brilliance here. The stretch of songs of the middle, in particular Set the House Ablaze and Start, manage to overcome the sterile production thanks to their raw energy, and Weller's talent for sticky hooks and trenchant observations make That's Entertainment a must-listen. Plus, in spite of how much they overwhelm the mix, there are some truly great basslines on this album. Unfortunately, these high points only further highly how dull a significant portion of Sound Affects is.

I didn’t care for this at all. This album is all vocals and bass guitar with a bit of skritchy guitar around the edges and dude can barely sing. The songs are structurally weak with what sounds like endless verses with no choruses and few hooks.

Wasn’t quite feeling it, I knew Thats entertainment already

I heard it yesterday and today nealry all of it is forgotten. Not a goof sign. Some sort of pop-punk of the early 80s. Not bad, nothing special either.

Surprisingly boring

Mediocre

Tämmöstä perus rittimeininkiä, ei jaksa.

Not my style

1001 albums and more then half of them are from this fuck ass rock bands, I can't do this.

Meh eighties post punk

Quality pop songs, catchy riffs, but it feels like there's something missing for me to call it a great album. Like I enjoyed each of the songs for the most part, but it didn't feel like it was contributing to anything, not greater than the sum of it's parts.2.5 rounded down because I can't recall any one specific song that stood out.

Extremely English sounding band with exactly the kind of music I would expect from a band in England in the 80s. I feel like I have heard it before, done by other bands and better. Not something that resonated with me att all.

Nothing really memorable tbh. Music for the last couple really confused me at the beginning.

Not really my thing but has its moments. it's absolutely hilarious to me that they essentially took Taxman and just made it worse 5 / 10 Best track/s: Scrape Away

Another one of those albums I had no problems with, but it ended being little better than white noise to me.

Somewhere in here is a great 5 song EP

There was a good album in there somewhere

mun Albe ufhole. Kei Ziit für so mittelmässigi fürz. Hans 3 mal versuecht zlose aber het mi nie Catched. Isch meh luhne abhängig aber grätschemer mal wider mitme 2 dri.

Sorry, no more fucking Paul Weller thanks

Kept two songs

Did not finish. Found boring and uninteresting.

The Jam. Not completely up my street but not too bad. never heard any of the songs on this album before

I just don't get why you'd want to be completely deriviative of music from 2 decades ago. The bass lines are really fun (except when they blatantly steal from the Beatles,) but my god the vocals are terrible. Terrible British bellowing.

In one ear out the other did not enjoy

Apart from 'That's Entertainment' and bits of other songs on the album that veered off from the overly familiar frenetic amphetamine fuelled choppy rhythm, this album, like all their albums really, didn't do much for me. Weller's vocal style seems at odds with the 'edgy' instrumentation; some might say it works because of that but I prefer the likes of The Fall's raw instrumentation Mark E. Smith's jarring delivery. If you want urban post punk acerbic renditions of council estate inner city angst, there's no better band than early Fall. But I digress, Weller went on to form The Style Council, which says it all really. Even with his working class background, he just comes off as a middle class grandad with pipe and slippers, even when trying to be down with the ordinary folk. Probably why he's still alive though, unlike Smith.

This is not for me but it was fine, I guess.

Disgust turns to apathy as yet another British rock band from the 80’s appears on my feed. Apathy turns to dread when I read that the frontman of this group went on to be in The Style Council, a project I despised upon first listen a few weeks ago. This group sounds better, but only marginally. While nothing here is offensive or unlistenable, few and far between were the times I felt like I’d remember a song or melody by lunch time today. This list feels less like 1001 albums you should listen to and more like a look into the record collection of a gen X white british guy. 2/5

I remember the Jam existing but that's about it. I was in high school in 1980 - so you'd think this would be right up my alley - but I don't really remember any of their songs. I feel like there was that one kid in school who had a Jam t-shirt - but not sure - maybe that was in college. I listened 3 times through... I now realize I do remember "That's Entertainment" from the radio - but it never really grabbed me back when it was new and still doesn't. Wow - the bassline in "Start!" (a song which I had never heard before) is not just inspired by "Taxman" by the Beatles it's a straight ripoff. On paper, you would think I would really like this band. Clearly some inspiration from the Beatles, somewhat socially conscious/critical lyrics like the Kinks, high energy punky/new wave sound with similarities to The Police and Elvis Costello and The Clash. I can also see how they likely influenced bands like Blur that came later. But for some reason most of this is not really clicking for me. I do like the groove of "Music for the Last Couple" and so I "liked" this on Spotify. I also "liked" the songs "Monday", "Man In the Corner Shop" and "Scrape Away". It looks like "Scrape Away" and "Last Couple" are 2 of the least liked songs on this album, so not sure what I am missing here. I've got different ears I guess. I went back and looked at all of the other albums that I like that came out in 1979/1980 - there was SO much better stuff out there than this - even if you only compare to British bands such as The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Joy Division, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Joe Jackson, Led Zeppelin, The Police, The Psychedelic Furs, Squeeze, UB 40, and The Kinks themselves. Either way, glad I listened and now I have 4 more "new to me" songs in my rotation. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/11 Rating: 2/5

Honestly mid. Not bad enough for me to want to skip a track, but it would be really be fine as a background noise only. Some tracks sound like the previous one, and overall the album doesn't seem to experiment at all.

Genuinely do not remember a single thing about this

Very mediocre

2.5 80s bowie clone revisit

It’s fine.

I have grown to detest new wave.

This one is almost indistinguishable from yesterday's album, somehow. It's not very memorable. I think that I used to be grading these kinds of albums higher, but I have just listened to so many English punk bands now that I'm just kind of fatigued at the whole concept. Who knows - maybe someone can still come along and blow me away. But it wasn't The Clash yesterday, and it won't be The Jam today. Favorite track: "Start!"

A bit too bri’ish innit then love?

Another 40 minutes of unexceptional British New Wave. Meh.

I skipped a couple of songs, and the ones that I did listen offered nothing new, sometime it gets tiring to listen to some 80s albums that all sound the same sometimes.

2.5 - ok but nothing memorable

-hmm.. not terrible, but didn’t really blow me away. maybe i still just have an unrefined taste for post-punk as it seems this is a celebrated album within the genre but didn’t leave a huge impression. some great songs on here though and the psychedelic elements were cool -Favorites: Monday, Scrape Away

Starts so annoying. Annoying lyrics, annoying rhythm, annoying guitar. I really don’t enjoy this. It feels like a pastiche of references to bands that are a lot better and the parts are greater than the sum. As it goes on it marginally improves but it’s not memorable nor original now of particular musical quality

Just fine, wasn’t much that jumped out at me though.

I knew 'That' Entertainment' which is a phenomenal tune. There were some.other good ones here as well, but for me, nothing that came even close to how good Entertainment is. I was hoping for more. Pretty Green was solid as well. Three stars.

It's a boring listen. The band doesn't have any qualities that makes me want to listen to the next song, let alone the entire album.

A middling-to-annoying listen.

Hailed as the best album by the Jam, but all I heard was a couple of songs I remembered from the 80s and a lot of fluff. Like crossing the Beatles with ska and ending up with something that's not really very pleasant. Two stars.

i wanted to like this so bad 😖

4.5/10

Not interesting or remarkable

Not my style

British 80s forgettable but perfectly fine. Didn’t suck me in whatsoever, but that’s ok!

I went to the history to figure out why this would make the list. There is nothing special. It was their 5th studio album. This was blah all the way through. I think he got drunk with a band member and promised to put it in. I couldn’t think of another reason.

I debated whether to give this a 2 or a 3. It's fine, I guess? It's not bad. It just doesn't stand out to me. It's not distinctive. I expect not to like everything on this list, because it encompasses so many decades and genres. But I can usually understand why albums are included. This one I don't get.

Not sure why this is on the list

The vocal first reminded me of David Bowie's voice a little and the style, but not really. It's not outstanding and it's kinda plain, feels like another british band. I listened to it in the afternoon and mostly forgot about the album by late evening, saaad. 2/5 —————————————— Liked: — Monday

Seemed like fairly normal Britpop. Knew the hit "That's Entertainment" which is fairly solid, but otherwise don't think the rest of the album is worth listening.

Pretty poor. I had high hopes seeing That's Entertainment listed, but that's far better than anything else on it. Start! is overrated, it's just a less good Taxman.

Ähnelt den Smiths aber es ist mir leider gerade nicht fetzig genug. Ist nicht schlecht, aber ich finds gerade ein bisschen nichts sagend.

Nothing stand out for me

Goofy pop punk. Great. Or at least that was my initial thought after reading description of this album and hearing first song. However, there are a couple decent tracks here. But I also feel like you could blame these guys for Blink 182 as their spiritual godfathers. 2/5

I just don't get it. I thought maybe I started getting it briefly, but then it lost me again. The bass playing is pretty good, but that's the only thing I'm really enjoying from this album so far. Honestly, I might enjoy the album more if every track was just a bass solo. Like the whole thing. Remove everything except the bass. This just wholly isn't an album for me. It's not bad, and I didn't hate listening to it, but I don't really want to listen to it ever again. Favorite Song(s): But I'm Different Now

This might be harsh but it's just more of the same in this genre. If this came out today no one would listen.

Okay-ish. I can maybe see the appeal back when it was released.. not as funky or groovy in 2025..

I wish the singer tried as hard as the rest of the band.

Two albums on the list by The Jam. ZERO albums on the list by Warren Zevon! Other than that, there's nothing wrong here, but nothing exceptionally memorable either. If you've ever heard an album by a British New Wave band of the early 80s, you'll know what this is going to sound like.

This mod-influenced rock album feels like standing in a neatly painted city square—everything sharp, stylish, and full of movement, yet somehow too orderly to stir much beneath the surface.

Eh. Inoffensive new wave/punk that goes in one ear and right out the other. The exact type of album that could not make the list and no one would care. 4/10

different. sounds. noises. experiment.

What was this again? Some punk I think

I don’t really like The Jam. If you like bass then this is for you. The middle of the album is stronger than the rest. That’s Entertainment is a good song. Many on here are just not very good.

I really enjoy Start! and That’s Entertainment but the rest doesn't do much for me.

They may be called The Jam, but they are not my jam.

So many mediocre British bands on this list damn

Y que decir otra que me aburrió... Nota: 2.4

Right here at the beginning I'll be very clear that I don't think it's fair to dedicate so much of this list to deep-diving the history of punk/new wave. Clearly the original author, Robert Dimery, has some bias, but I realize the list isn't called "The 1001 Most Influential Albums Of All Time", instead it's basically the "Hey, you should listen to these 1001 albums" list. Fine, he covered his bias. On balance, I don't know if this really belongs on a list like this, but I'm a fan of punk/new wave and don't mind being given this album as homework (even if I'm not as Brit-centric as Robert). In the grand scheme, this album is pretty unremarkable. If you're not already excited for post punk then I don't expect there's anything here to grab you. I hear pieces of all the post-punk that preceded this album, and seeds of the new wave that would follow it. Not enough to be convinced that this was an outsized influence on later bands, but enough to understand why you'd make it a reference point in your thesis about the history of new wave.

It was fine, nothing really stuck out. I was only familiar with their song “Town Called Malice” I’ll go check out that album. 2.75 stars

Voor een keer nog eens niet volledig geluisterd ...

Toast.

Inte speciellt offensive men enformigt

That's Entertainment is a good song. The rest basically all sound the same. Which you would think is good overall, but none of them hit that well and it causes the album to drag.

Blind album and artist. Was just not my thing like something was off in every song. Maybe the vocalist?

One good song doesn't make an album

Album No. 0025 on my list. I am aware of the influence that Paul Weller and the Jam had on Britpop and how important the legacy of this album is. "Sound Affects" however seemed rather boring and redundant to me; most songs seemed rather bland. "Pretty Green" and "That's Entertainment" stood out for me and I will certainly listen to them again; the rest of the album did not have any lasting impact on me. Not that they are bad or that this is a terrible album overall, I'm just a bit bored by it (again, especially in comparison to the importance of this album for British music). 2/5 stars.

Brit pop of the old is strong with this one. I don't hear the alleged post-punk in there tho. It's not all that bad, but doesn't really do a thing for me. At this point I don't care if the familiarities in the music are because of this band or not, I'm so not impressed with the music.

Just okay

Another punk-leaning rock album from a (to me) unknown band. Extremely forgettable record that failed to make any sort of positive impression on me. All songs sounded quite similar and boring, and it wasn't my thing at all. Only reason not giving this a 1 star is it didn't sound bad enough technically.

Incredibly choppy, as reflected by some songs having tens of millions of Spotify listens and others having under a million. And interestingly, these numbers almost perfectly reflect which songs are better than others. Start!, although imitating other earlier basslines (Taxman, hmm), is a solid track with a nice glimmery guitar tone and fun vocal harmonies in the (pre)chorus. And there's a strange playful falsetto breakdown that happens several times. That's Entertainment is also memorable, both for the almost psychedelic singing and the dynamic, biting instrumental (which lacks percussion but has a bright, assertive rhythm guitar to make up for it). The two opening tracks are also fairly strong, especially Monday for having perhaps the best hook in the album. I could see this being covered by artists like Bowie or T-Rex – though that comparison does highlight The Jam's slightly behind-the-times songwriting (given that this was released in 1980). To offset the positives, there are a ton of weak tracks that I can't even begin to understand the significance of. Why are the vocals so horribly mixed in Set The House Ablaze? Was Dream Time just devised as one good bassline, before the other instruments and singers tried to improvise over it in a single take? What the fresh heck is the singer drunkenly bellowing about in Scrape Away? I guess the genre is meant to be new-wave/punk, but with the band members especially unskilled at playing their instruments and at songwriting. Sound Affects is such a weirdly produced and composed collection of half-decency-half-nonsense that I can't see the justification for including it in this list. 2/5 Key tracks: Pretty Green, Monday, Start!

Some of these albums leave me shaking my head. What makes this album stand out? I don’t hear anything special or unique about it. These guys must be friends of the author.

Compared to the other albums I've heard like this. It was generic and boring. Not terrible though

Interesting album, would not see myself listening to it again

As I listened to "Sound Affects," I thought, "If they were looking for more British new wave, they should've added Gene's "Olympian" instead." In my opinion, The Jam wasn't significant enough to warrant the inclusion of one album, let alone two. Actually, I don’t even recall the sound of their debut album, and I had to give it another listen for reference.

I only needed 2 songs to appreciate this band. It's not bad, It's also just below mid.

Not a lot of jam on this one. The sound doesn't affect either.

It was okay, but I wouldnt necessarily think to turn it on again

So forgettable I already forgot it and I just finished it.

Left me feeling pretty underwhelmed. The music is bland and boring, and it just didn’t do anything for me. I was hoping for some energy, but instead, it felt like background noise. It’s not terrible, but it’s definitely not something I’d choose to listen to again!

Snoozeville

I’ve got a pocketful of PreTty GreEn I’ve got a love and I know that It’s All Mine

Super whatever for me More of a peanut Butter guy tbh

This album was fine? Not mind blowing or anything. Not terrible. Nothing particularly stood out, and I don’t know why it’s on this list, but it’s all right. I’d maybe revisit it.

insignificant. weak. useless. these are the words that describe this album and my son.

Didn't really care for it.

Sounds like a British 80s band. I didn’t hate it, but it didn’t do a lot for me.

British social commentary from 1980, not subtle. Some might enjoy the bass-forward mix. Gang of Four did the angularity better. Standout tracks: That's Entertainment (of course), Man in the Corner Shop

Britrock but kind of boring

There’s one thing to make a fine album, but why is it on a list of albums I have to listen to? I quite disagree with that sentiment.

In my opinion this not a great album, but it is probably my favorite album by The Jam that has appeared on this list so far. Side A is definitely stronger than side B, with the exception of maybe “Scrape Away” which began to grow on me after a while.

Man, there is too much punk or post or proto or whatever punk on this list. I liked Paul Weller's later output better. This is being dragged down by the shitty way English punks from this era "sing"

Jätti yllättävän kylmäksi: pidin ensin tästä hieman epätoivoisesta soundista, mutta se ei päässyt missään vaiheessa yllättämään vaan jatkoi aika tasaisena massana loppuun asti. Ihan ok, mutta en tule muistamaan tästä mitään edes parin tunnin päästä.

At first is.thought, wait this can't possibly be in top 1001 right? Then I realized that 1001is relatively a large number. This album is not bad, simply boring. Unentertaining. That's all. Just another classic rock album from the 70s or 80s, nothing unique at all.

It was just okay, it’s not really my style of music. Ik ts right up bros alley tho which is why he gave it a 4, I’m giving it a 2. I liked that’s entertainment, but that was really about it

I listened to the complete album but not much jumped out of me and ends up being largely forgettable.

I listened twice. Nothing stuck out. Does that say more about the record, or more about me.

Super average, boring and unworthy of further explanation.

Yep, more britshit

Less good Sparks

Oh, brother. This one is a rough listen. Sounds like a garage band trying to cover Rubber Soul and doing a shitty job at that. The album starts off fine, and they're clearly going for some new sounds, but everything that made The Jam great, their perfect blend of mod R&B and sneering punk, is being reshuffled here. As it goes along there's nothing tight or powerful about their sound. It's like they're disintegrating as we listen. And it doesn't help that every song trails off out of tune. "That's Entertainment" is the one great song out of the lot, but that alone can't save this one. A right mess.

file it under “cool riffs but wish he would shut the fuck up” also “start!” is just taxman

Derivative. Derivative of some good stuff, so not objectionable really — just not captivating. It’s a 2 or a 3 — depending on the mood.

Was meh.

I can't think of anything insightful to say about this one.

At first listen I found most tracks to be pretty toothless and forgettable. On second listen a few moments arose that I liked, but still not a listen I'd ever return to. All in all not horrible, but still just below average. 2.4/5 -> 2/5

I liked Music for the Last Couple and That’s Entertainment but it wasn’t really my wheelhouse. It felt like a big nothing to me honestly.

I didn’t really realize what I was listening to and kept getting distracted. I like some of the beats but a lot of it sounds the same. Maybe need to listen to it again but probably won’t.

forgettable. not a fan of brit pop evidently. 2/5 yet again.

Having more than one moody British bands in a row might impact my rating, but like….go to therapy

I think Snorkle hit the nail on the head yesterday when she said an album felt derivative because it had been derived from so much. 2/5 bc it was a yawn for me but there’s no telling how I would feel if I hadn’t heard everything inspired by this album first

Not bad. But I would rather listen to the Clash!

Not my cup of tea but at least the tea was drinkable.

Not bad, not great

Never been into The Jam, and this hasn’t really shifted my opinion. When they’re good they’re great, like on That’s Entertainment but otherwise I think they’re mad overrated. Some of this is ok, but other than the singles nothing really grabbed me. I’m sure their best ofs are great, but their albums aren’t for me. Best tracks: Start, That’s Entertainment

Why was this album on the list? I did not find it particularly good. More boring and forgettable.

Every time we get a British Pop Punk or electronica album it reminds me that even a list like this is beholden to an authors bias. Just straight mediocre, repetitive, nothing really of note. Thats Entertainment grabbed my attention, but like a bunch of songs on this album, I might enjoy a section but the rest just brings it down.

The most generic British pop punk album. We get it author… you’re British and grew up listening to punk/new wave, then you got older and got into 90s electronica. Good for you!

An uninspiring album. Nothing exciting happening here.

Generic 80s UK punk rock that doesn't move me in the slightest. Absolute nonsense. 4/10

Lame English rock. Boring except for the drums every once in a while

Not great

I’m getting really tired of British New Wave. Maybe it’s my distribution lately, but I feel like I’ve had at least 2 of these a week for the last couple of months. They all sound similar and do nothing for me.

Not my jam.

This started out good but it’s just not my jam.

Eh. Feeling very neutral about this album

#387. Generic British radio rock. Nothing spectacular here. 2/5: That's not entertainment, unfortunately

It was not that good to me.

Prøver at have kant, men bliver lidt for generisk uk rock

ts not the clash

Already had The Jam this week. Weller is still a supremely annoying vocalist.

boring

Médiocre stuff

I get it. I think.

Nah I didn’t like this. Obnoxious British “rock”

Dont really know how I feel about this one. Most of thr songs had a classic garage-rock type of sounds. None were bad per se, but none stood out. As I think about it, i cant really come up with any I remember. Overall- fine album, im sure people who like the genre really enjoy it, but it was very mediocre for me.

Not really for me

3.73 rym bel basso decisamente troppo ripetitivo 2/5

Ihan on musiikkia, mutta ei omaan makuun.

So this started relatively promising but then ended up being an album that sounds pretty much the same throughout. Nothing too exciting but this was released in 1980 when it would've been pretty cool to hear.

I like a few Jam songs but this ain’t it, pal. Just listened and I have no recollection over any of it besides “this is average”.

This was fine, I guess, but also unexceptional. 2.4

Kind of fun but I'd rather listen to Bowie tbh

Well, what do you know, more boring basic British rock. I wish this list would just cut it out with this crap

Not really my thing

“Solid but nothing amazing”- me about the other jam album on the list. I’m docking points for the exact same feeling this time (2.5/5)

Start! the best song by far. Scrape away wasn't bad.

This Sound lacked Affects on me

This album is timeless, in that it could have come out in any decade and I still wouldn’t have liked it

i feel like i almost liked this multiple times

Here's a pretty mid album that I didn't mind having on, but did absolutely nothing to drag my attention away from the documents I was writing at work. Post-punk fans will certainly enjoy this for its catchy bops and groovy bass lines, but I'm left just wanting a bit more.

Meh. 2/5

What a mediocre forgettable album. Not bad, just also not unique

generisk

This album sounds like a bunch of other albums I've heard before. Nothing on here was great, and nothing on here was awful, but nothing stood out. I would've been fine never hearing this in my lifetime.

What's in the water in the UK? Lord this is painfully derivative and dull. Bruce Foxton sounds epic on the bass and that's really the only thing I enjoyed at all. This is like Elvis Castello's less talented cousin made a band and I already find that man teedering on music by committee nonsense. I suppose they're at least honest. A baby wailing and stray dog howling... that's entertainment. Truth in advertising.

Not my jam

not bad but not for me

Unimpressed

It's ok rock, but I feel like i can't hear the lyrics. This sounds weird, but like it's really good music to vibe to, but the closer I listen, the less I like it

Music For The Last Couple is the only song here worth listen and it takes a whole damn minute to start it.

Meh. Kind of generic. Not bad but nothing really stood out

Just. Not for me. Was someone in highschool when these bands where cool? Seems so isolated...

Iha jees ei mikään ihmeellinen 2,5/5 Punk Rockin hyvästä päästä, mut silti joku 2/5

Really lives up to the name “sound affects” - this sounds like they just got the keyboard with sound effects and filters and went wild.

Apparently, Paul Weller has been quoted as saying that ‘Sound Affects’ sounds like a cross between ‘Revolver’ and ‘Off The Wall’. I can tell you it sounds nothing like ‘Off The Wall’, and that it wears Its Beatles influences on its sleeve a little too obviously. It’s an OK album for what it is, but I wasn’t wowed by it.

*gandolf meme* “I have no memory of this place”

Ehh. Almost good. I like the energy of the punk rock vibe but it just didn't cut it for me.

Sick of these damn british pop rock bands.

Punk de hueva.

Reminded me of many post-punk projects with heavy influences of funk on the bass lines. Wasn't impressed by the overall aesthetic of the album nor the lyrics, but I can tell how it has influenced many modern day acts.

Honestly, kind of boring to me. Favorite(s): Monday, Music for the Last Couple

Not bad

Bass lines were solid but everything was uninteresting

Less than the sum of its parts

forgettable poppy rock

It was ok. Nothing special or original. lalalalala lalalalala

Aan het begin veel distortion en weinig stemmen, later vlakt dat wat uit en wordt het echt een typische Britse sound. Opzich vind ik dat nog wel lekker klinken eerlijk gezegd. 'That's Entertainment' is best een knaller.

British pop in this era all sounds the same to me. Not a bad album, some good hits. But overall it all blended to the same beat for me. Objectively good though

Was nothing special

Ei lähtenyt miehistölle. Hyviä soundeja mutta biisit ei ollut tarpeeks hyviä. 2/5

1 - dont really like their voices; pretty fun tho; british 2 - i hate mondays; kinda sucks 3 - too straight for me 4 - fun; cool whistling 5 - cute 6 - dont really get it; not crazy about it; dont really like the titular verse 7 - scared me 8 - ok? 9 - ok 10 - at least it's short 11 - energetic; experimental-ish; was that french?

Is it good music? Yes Is it exceptional? No Do I need alcohol to enjoy this? Almost certainly 🍺🍺

No tällanen perus 2/5

Pretty short and not much that stands out. Felt like pretty run-of-the-mill English rock.
