Reviews (page 3 of 7)

I actually liked this one! Sounds like a mix of the Doors and the Moody Blues. Late 60s heavy psychedelia with cool proggy keyboards

Surprisingly good!

this is kind of a vibe while i'm a little stoned doing work from home i am halfway through the title track and this is lowkey sick loved it

Exotic, weird, and confusing. In short, it's psychedelic. But it isn't the sophisticated trippiness of the likes of The Beatles and Beach Boys, nor is it the solemn and dark compositions of the likes of The Doors, despite the slight similarity of the sound. It's the wild and feral psychedelia of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd and Dr. John. It's like getting lost in the middle of an unfamiliar jungle, with all those unfamiliar creatures and tribes around. Of course, this type of psychedelic rock isn't necessarily better than the respected classics of the genre, nor is it worse. In fact, it's a completely different domain. Apples and oranges. I agree that this is the most difficult to get into, but I can't deny that this is the psychedelia in its purest form. It's messy, chaotic, and exotic. I mean, what could be purer a psychedelic track than a song performed when they were so high it goes on for 17 minutes?

I actually liked this quite a bit. Good psych-rock to jam out to.

The beginnings of metal

one of the best rock suite ever

Wow. Killer.

Ah this was great fun. Obvs the simpsons one was a highlight, great fun. I like the idea of them saying In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and then, hey let's make a 17 minute song out of this.

First impression I got was they're very similar to the Doors, opening track sounds like something off "The Doors" album. I love the doors so I'm liking this. The final track is an epic, maybe a bit too long but loved it's use in the Simpsons so I'm giving this FOUR STARS

Side A is pretty good, but let's be real - we're here for the title track, and it is killer.

Interesting combo of psychedelic ear candy on one side, and one enormous proto-metal sludge fest on the other. Though I am usually fairly partial to psychedelia, the side long ripper is the clear winner here.

Kind of unexpected in a good way. Psych-rock with some interesting instrumental touches. Nothing jumped out to me as a whole but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Last two songs got me moving to the beat. InAGaddaDaVida will always be a classic.

It’s like a cross between pop and rock from back in the day. Classic stuff

I was fully expecting a band called Iron Butterfly to be some sort of proto-metal band. This very much isn't proto-metal. It is much, much more butterfly than it is iron. It's a butterfly that went absolutely massive on the '60s California flower power scene.

-Side A was pretty good, but not the most thrilling or innovative rock I've ever heard. All quick pleasant tracks that sound like relatively standard psychedelic rock tracks with a single tick more intensity. Not bad by any means, but also not as intense as side B would have led me to expect -Side B: aka just the one song: "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." A classic rock tune with a killer riff. Overall the jam is great, I like the individual solos. At one point the Jan really slows down and that part was weak, but the whole intro and all the singing parts are killer and absolutely classic pieces of rock music.

Very cool! An interesting piece of music for sure.

Very heavy sounding psychedelic rock for being from 1968. I like it! The main riff in In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida sounds very similar to Cream's Sunshine of Your Love. You can sense the hard rock and almost proto heavy metal vibes but the album doesn't quite reach that heaviness. It's good heavy psychedelic rock.

Very prog, but also pretty heavy at points. Title track is my favourite, but not just because of the Simpsons!

Not my type of rock but I did enjoy it as a different vibe. Better to listen to on loud speakers than headphones. Super short album

Think I was way too sober to enjoy this entirely, but nonetheless, it's a great psychedelic album.

Iron Butterfly was an awesome band. I listened to this album as a kid. Totally amazing

Flat production means a lot of this plods along. There were some interesting tracks like the trippy 'My Mirage', fuzzy pop-psych on 'Termination'. The title track takes up half the album and thankfully this is a good one, but it is overlong. In the right environment (on campus in a smoke filled room back in '68) I imagine this was quite a cool stoner album. I've rated it in that context.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is one hella-long track, so awesome though.

Well, I like psychedelia. So, will be listening again, especially the eponymous song.

Rock psicodélico agradable. Un 4.

Dragged on a little too long, but was overall enjoyable. Lots of solos.

Not really my favorite, but it is iconic.

This is one of the milestones I've been waiting for since I started this journey. This is the first album that I get to listen to on vinyl instead of Spotify. My pre-relisten review is that it has a unmemorable A-side but the titular 17 minute B-side is a classic Psychedelic-Rock track that is fun to get super high and just jam out to. I think I will give it a 4/5. Now for the relisten review. "Flowers and Beads" is better than I remembered and feels like it should be on a Peter Quill Awesome Mix. As for the rest of the front side "Most Anything You Want" is also a good track, but as predicted the rest falls flat. I could have done with a little less electric organ or at least slightly lower in the mix at times. The titular track is pretty much exactly how I remember it a groovy psych track with a great drum interlude around the 7 minute mark. The only detracting part is the strange elephant type of noise. I normally am against long songs, but this is how you do a long song right. It holds your attention the entire way through. The album as a whole held up to my expectations and I stand by my 4/5.

Some cliches live up to the reputation, don't they, and I suppose IB was one of the reasons the ‘60s were the ‘60s? This could provide the soundtrack to any number of films from that decade. It’s heavy-heavy, with a bit more organ than ideal, and too sprawling, generally. (Infinite Jest might be the In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida of contemporary novels.) But the songs are surprisingly layered and varied. If you’re up for (maybe I mean down for) the heaviness, it’s a solid listen throughout, even intermittently tuneful and sweet. Not terrible for being terribly cliched, in other words. It would be cool to hear some contemporary groups cover these songs, but current acolytes seem thin on the ground. Still, it’s easy to see how they might have become Pink Floyd. “Flowers and beads are one thing" -- truer words have never been spoken. A for effort – meaning 3.6 for 4.

first listen great stuff, but very short album originally missed this album somehow, I've listened to it now just before #415 Van Halen self titled

Príma psychadelic rokk.

Wowa-Whata-Greata-Albuma

A monster of an album. Iconic psychedelic rock

The rest of this album is pretty tight, but "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" goes so hard to this day. That song is epic!

Short and sweet. I knew of the title track but hadn't ever heard the extended instrumental before, but liked it.

I could listen to the title track all day. Not just because it was sampled on one of my favourite nas albums either. Pop music doesn't have enough church organ solos.

Its getting four stars for that one song alone.

This songs kinda like the hymn my wife and I made out to when we were younger but it can't be cause it sounds like rock and or roll..... 4/5 the title track carries this album but the rest is pretty good.

Psychedelic! Parallel to Jefferson Airplane, but a bit more aggro.

Swingende psychedelische hard-rock.

good band. Could be classificated as phycodelic?

This went better than expected. Very enjoyable, even the 17 minute song.

I will always at least enjoy organ, and this brings that instrument and spades. Plus surf licks and just the right amount of cheese. It's far from perfect - saying it's "dated" is probably tired but definitely true - but always fun. The placement in 1001 Albums is absolutely deserved. My rating is a bit generous because it's psych. That final track is a statement, though. And something I can only speculate about the contemporary reaction to: There have been far too many echoes in the ensuing fifty years.

In the garden of eden, baby.

If you don't like 60's Psychedelia, you won't like this. I do like 60's Psych so I love this. Of course the title track is the loss-leader to get you in the door and it's great but my favorite here has always been "My Mirage". It's a banger all around and I'm surprised no hip hop act has ever sampled that riff. It's hot and heavy.

I'm usually not a big fan of the early 70s psychadelic rock, but this is a little before that I guess, and I do like that. I really liked "Flowers and Beads". In the title track I keep waiting for rasputin to kick in.

enjoyed this

This is an album. I have it on vinyl and it’s a cool record. Obviously the total track is just a masterpiece. Classic riff - great jamming. Kind of overstays, but the rest makes up for it. I dig the whole guitar centric rock anthem vibe. Just solid 60s rock. Reminds me of the Guess Who.

Pretty great. One truly classic song

Everyone's talking about the title track, but I think the other tracks are also amazing. Everyone gets their shine. The organ is so surreal and I'm so glad it plays at least some major lead in most of the songs. The bass and drums get their epic moments, but when they all come together like the intro of "My Mirage", it's perfect harmony. "Flowers and Beads" has strong baroque pop tied with The Doors influence. "Termination" is the outlier in music direction and subject material, due to it not being written by Ingle, which I feel is the weakest but does have its strong points, and I like the chimes ending. But holy shit the title track. From the organ intro to the vocals to the bass solo followed by the organ intrusion. Then in a moment's silence around 3:20 you hear the guitar but the other instruments fight back for control (including the energetic bass), but at that point it's too late and you can hear the guitar proud in the background until the bass goes crazy again. Silence again around 6:20 but hold up, now the drum wants to dance around you. Around 9:00 we take an occult turn, and it really feels like a satanic ritual with the drums all over the place and the unsettling organ. Starts to feel schizophrenic around the 10:50 mark before the organ takes you for another ride. But then the bass comes back from vacation to hit you with reality. Some crazy riffs by the bass, and Ingle's guitar finally shines before ending the song with more vocals. And damn does it know how to leave on a high note.

album of 1 song, but a classic one

In a Gadda da Vida has got the title track, which is a 17 min epic. Really hits hard, great riffs and just and awesome bass and organ underlay. Big big fan of this track. The rest of the album is just like the doors which is not a bad thing. But final track is just epic.

Quite enjoyed actually, not as heavy as I thought it would be

A three star album made four stars with the epic final track

Underrated band!!

Even with this high a score, slightly underwhelming given my love of witchy or occult sounds. The real game changer is the epic title track.

Acid rock, psychedelic rock.1968.

Should I spin a 17 min song next time we juke?

4 starts for the 17 minutes of the title track

Curto muito essa sonoridade. Especialmente o som do baixo

Sounded like a psychedelic Neal diamond. Great final track.

Way better than I thought it would be

I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would. It was the perfect album to just vibe to. The 17 minute long title track was surprisingly bearable and the other tracks weren't bad either. All around this album was a good time.

Well is a pretty average psychedelic record from the times. The title track is a classic for sure. Just not too sold on a 17 minute version. Does some cool things but not cool enough to justify the length. Other than that the rest goes down well enough but nothing stands out either. Its just OK at the end of the day. With the caveat of having one of the quintessential songs of the genre.

Maybe they should have started with the last track- ‘in a Gadda da Vida’ then they could have missed out the trying to be like the Beatles of tracks 1 and 2 and the weird section of what sounded like an attempt at getting towards a German heavy metal group! Not very often an album gets better as it goes in but this one certainly does! Best track- ‘in a gadda’ Worst track- ‘most anything you want’ Last track saved it 6/10

Felt like a store-brand version of the The Doors. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

A totally fine album until that ridiculous final track - you can’t help but smile as the drum solo enters its second minute. Favourite track: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Good grungy hard rock, innovative in its day.

We're all thinking it

Leuke psychedelische rock, zang is niet wow

Short and sweet. Last song was 1/2 the album

Old school psychedelic rock.

Side one: one star Side two: (The In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida side): 5 stars Average: 3 stars

It's alright, pretty unremarkable imo but alright. I wouldn't turn this off if it came on but it's not a bad listen. Everyone raves about the title track, I liked it enough but didn't blow me away tbh. Other than that I'm going to forgot this pretty quick. Fav Track: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda

Iron Butterfly are a one-song band, and that one song takes up the entire second side of this record. Everything on side one — competent late-60s psychedelic rock, nothing more — exists mainly to clear the runway for the 17-minute title track that made them famous. The first side gets a quick triage and nothing more. The title track opens with one of the most recognizable organ intros in rock history, and hearing it in the context of an active Hammond practice gives it a dimension casual listening wouldn’t. Doug Ingle found something genuinely hypnotic in those opening minutes — a locked groove with real weight behind it, the kind of intro that earns its reputation. That section alone justifies the listen. What follows is a different question. The drum solo is long. The guitar noodling is patient. The song returns where it started, which is either satisfying resolution or the sensation of having traveled a great distance to arrive somewhere you never left, depending entirely on your relationship to the 17 minutes preceding it. Going the full distance earns a kind of grudging respect for the record’s commitment to its own indulgence — 1968 had not yet been told it couldn’t do this, and Iron Butterfly took full advantage. The Simpsons episode doesn’t hurt. Knowing what the song is capable of doing to a Sunday morning church service adds something that pure musical assessment can’t account for, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. A straightforward 3. Better than expected, not good enough for more, and a record that will probably be remembered longer for its cultural footprint than anything it actually achieves sonically.

I'm really only aware of the title track, and otherwise this is my first time listening to this album start-to-finish. This is just kind of psychedelic meh. It seems a bit self-indulgent most of the time.

The three-est three star to ever three

Iron Butterfly is truly a 1 hit wonder. They probably shouldn’t be on here to begin with. When your top song is listed multiple times in the Top 10 for an artist on Spotify, that’s an issue. When it has substantially more listens then the next most listened to song, that’s also indicative of a 1 hit wonder and should not be considered for the book. If this book was called “1001 songs you must hear before you die”, it might have a place, but to include the entire lackluster album over many more deserving is pretty criminal. Don’t get me wrong, the album is fine. Nothing terrible. It’s just so unremarkable that it almost feels like parody at points. If the titular “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” wasn’t literally half the length of the album, this would be a 2 star album. As it stands though, that song is quite good, and it was cool hearing the extended version for the first time. I was not aware that was a thing until today. I don’t even have to question what my favorite song on this album is, so that at least made putting it in the playlist of my favorite singular song from each album super easy today. Pretty much the only positive thing I can say about the rest of the album is that the Doors sample in the first song, “Most Anything You Want” was cool. I noticed it immediately, and enjoyed the way it was used in that song. That song in general wasn’t terrible. None of them are, they’re all fine, but god damn are they generic and bring nothing to the table. Why is this album here?? Seriously?? I have heard the titular track hundreds of times in shows and movies, and noted, that song is great. By itself it’s a 5. But every single other song is unremarkable, unmemorable filler, and I really almost think this album deserves a low 3 bordering a 2 because of it. There are a number of valid reasons why this album is so low rated on the site, and for once I agree with all of them. It truly should not be on here. It’s not terrible, but it’s also just objectively not good either. Truly forgettable, one of those albums you won’t remember listening to while it’s still playing. In addition, if you don’t like the title track, it’s for sure going to be a 1 for you. While I love it personally, I can see it having a fair share of negative feedback as well, also valid.

Most Anything You Want 3.4 Flowers and Beads 3 My Mirage 3.5 Termination 3.3 Are You Happy 3.7 In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida 3.7 Score: 3.433333333

It was ok. There was some good music, but it kind of felt like it never wrapped up or stuck with me.

One iconic song + some stock hippie organ noodling =/= a great album. Rounded up to three stars for sounding like rock and/or roll.

It's weird to me how so much of the psychedelic rock of the 60s sounds so similar. I feel like a genre based on psychedelic experiences shouldn't sound so generic half the time. Right? That being said, there are some interesting things going on here, primarily on the title track which is cool as a sort of proto-metal/prog song. Favorite track: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Fun 60’s psych rock

Bra, men inte mycket bra. Förutom låt nr 2. Den tyckte jag var riktigt fet. Är ju svag för 60-talet. Stark trea!

Wait a minute. This sounds like rock and/or roll. An alright album I guess. Felt very village greeny at first, but obviously the final song blows that away. It's a great song, though does outstay its welcome sadly.

The title song is still such a jam!

Great rock album, I had already heard the title track and it’s the highlight of the album for me. A nice song with a length jam sesh in there!

“Wait a minute, this sounds like rock and/or roll!” Like most of my generation, I first heard I. Ron Butterfly in an episode of The Simpsons. Bart switched out the opening hymn of his church with the seventeen minute long epic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, which he had reworded to “In the Garden of Eden”. For years, I assumed that’s what the song was called. I mean, it fits so well. I still can’t hear it without those words forming in my head. I'm not blown away by the first five tracks of the album. They're grand, in that 60s psychedelia kind of way, but nothing that sticks out as particularly special. In fact, there's only one song on the album that I really love. But that one song makes up a full half of the album. “In the Garden of Eden”, I mean “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, is a sprawling seventeen minute epic, and it's as brilliant as it is lengthy. The central riff is catchy as hell with a serious gothic, proto-metal vibe. The song breaks apart several times, descending into meandering guitar solos, drum breaks, organ interjections that slip off into completely new melodies, and some psychedelic guitar noise textures before reforming again. For as long as it is, it never feels like a struggle to get through. There are so many interesting changes of direction, it never feels like seventeen minutes. Saying that, it makes sense when at the end of the song, Gertie, the elderly organ player in Bart's church, collapses face-first onto her keys. 3.5 stars

Ihan okei, vanhahtava psykedeeli/progerock-albumi. Todella vahvat frank zappa - vibat.

Fine. Sounds like most other psychedelic albums from this era

I would have liked the last track much more without the 10 minutes of interlude where almost nothing happens. Idk why that was necessary.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a really great song. Album is just ok.

This is a tough album to give a honest opinion on. The reason is just because the title track is just so amazing. One of the greatest psychedelic rock songs of all time. It completely carries the album, which totally makes sense why they would name the album after it. But everything that leads up to it just pales in comparison and is totally hidden in the shadows. It all feels like filler leading up to the main attraction. Everything is quality, the instrumentation is excellent, just alittle boring before it peaks.

Another worthy listen. Some early The Doors vibes here. 3.5 stars.

Not really my genre, but clearly ahead of its time a bit, and honestly kinda neat.

Was a two until In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida came on at which point I was like "oh shit indagaddaavida-noway"

had no idea the lyrics were in a gadda da vida

Fun! Druggy

One really long great song with the rest being filler. But it is a great song!

One good song is sometimes enough to make a good album, especially a 17-minute song.

Fairly significant

Very 60s album.

The other tracks are alright, but I'm sure this album makes the list only because of its 17-minute closer - "the epitome of heavy psychedelic excess" as a quote on the album's Wikipedia article puts it. I'm kind of indifferent to the song really; it mostly makes me think of the Simpsons bit. Also, the song already came up as a cover on the Incredible Bongo Band album and I think they more than did it justice.

Anyone who makes a song over 10 minutes is just self absorbed

Organ-based psychedelic rock sound. Kinda cool but definitely sounds dated now.

It's a classic.

Fine, we’ve heard this before. The 15 minute closer was unnecessary.

I don't think any other band is known for and defined by a single song, it's Iron Butterfly. The entire first side of this album is a throwaway. It exists solely for the one song, side two. It's a good, but not great song, but that doesn't matter. I imagine it was controversial, simply for it's length but it really exemplifies psychedelic hard rock. The fact that it got played on the radio, when the 3 minute single was king, is pretty astonishing. Whether the story about the name being a slurred version of In the Garden of Eden is true or not doesn't matter -- it's just funny.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida? More like... In-A, uh, In-A-Gotta-Da-Pizza am I right? I don't know. This album's alright. It's another one of those albums where there's one song that people really like and then a bunch of others that nobody cares about. In the case, the title track is the only iconic song that Iron Butterfly ever had, and it's pretty neat. It's not my favorite super long song that acts as the entire B side of a 6-song album. Pink Floyd have them beat with "Echoes," obviously, but "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is not a bad song at all. As for the album at large? It's okay. There's some fun psychedelic noodling throughout the album. I like the organs and such. I'm not huge on the vocals though. They're just not great. I will say that despite the title track being somewhat ahead of its time in a musical sense, the album's songs, including the title track, are pretty basic in terms of lyrics. Like, most of the album is just the same "Ooh, I love you, girl" stuff that was everywhere in the 60s. Oh yeah, I really have nothing to say about the first 5 songs. They're okay, but nothing special. That's kinda how I feel about the album at large. It's kinda like that Booker T. and the M.G.'s album in that the one song that it's named after is pretty good, but the album itself just kinda happens. It's not bad at all, but it's not special. There's a reason why these guys are one-hit-wonders, you know? 3/5.

I actually liked this more than i thought i would

Up and down album for me but overall enjoyable for the most part. Termination and Are You Happy were highlights imo. Ending track is like 17 minutes long. Wow!

Very Doors-esque

Pretty boiler plate psychedelic rock....sounds like the Doors without the Jim Morrison thing. Definitely not bad, some cool, early rock sounds with the tools available to them, but also not amazingly memorable. Solid 3.

I got be honest here… This album is kinda overrated. Not for the 1001 Album reviewers because it has less than a 3 but I was under the impression that this album was monumental. It’s not… It’s fine with one great song. Also the production is less than stellar.

Meh, some decent enough blues rock and a title track that’s more fun in theory.

Side one sounds like average classic rock songs about a girl. Side two, the only side I think anyone cares about, has a fantastic baseline for a song that goes on too long. That song alone has to be why this album is on the list, which is both impressive and annoying to keep recommending some one hit wonder albums.

S'aite

276/1001 Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❓ Typical 60s psychedelia with a kind of Elvis like croon. It kinda works, but I don't think I'll be back to revisit.

I didn't mind this, very dark and moody.

Classic

Nice enough but sounds very dated and that title track is toooo long!

Doors vibes, but with less personality. 6/10

Better than I expected, but also drifts off into aimless psych noodling like I also expected.

Psychedelia. Oh joy. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida will forever make me think of The Simpsons, but it still rocks.

This sounds like rock and or roll

Not really my thing but it was ok. Flowers and Beads was my fave.

It was ok. Short, which I liked, but kind of repetitive.

It was a pretty short listen, not bad. 5.6/10

60s acid-soaked hard rock of psychedelic bluesy elements, creating a organ-laden sound with prominent bass that’s both heavy and nimble. It’s a good album with good musicianship, though most of the album may not rise above their peers at the time (though the heavy organ at least helped a unique sound). The stand-out track is the epic closer In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. I enjoy this album and whenever I hear it think “I should check this out more”, but then it falls out of mind and seems to lack that hook to reliably pull me back in.

I remember this from my dad's record collection. I know the title song, but I can't quite figure out why it's on the Top 1001 as it's just not that good. I assume it's because many point to this as the birth of heavy metal. I can honestly say I don't think I've ever listened to it from start to finish. The sound is dated and organ heavy but it sounds like 1968. It's a very connected album, not sure if that's a good thing or not, as it's a bit monotonous. 3 stars but more like 2.5. The album may have ushered in a harder sound but the songs don't hold up real well today.

You'll be shocked that, with a 17-minute closer, this album is little more than twice that long. It's fine. Sorta lacks hooks. It's from an era of music that influenced genres that I enjoy (hard rock and heavy metal) but seems, itself, to lack the features of those genres that I find compelling. The organ work is notable (thanks to one Doug Ingle, apparently). I also enjoy the fat, round bass tone (Greg Willis). I'm not gonna name anyone else because I didn't care much about their contributions. I skipped through most of the album's "psychedelic" first half. 'Termination' had some interesting melodic guitar parts and the song structure was more than some simple 60's pop with a down-mixed fuzz guitar. 'Are You Happy' is a jam. It's not as good as Hendrix or Edgar Winter but it kicks off strong and persists in an alright capacity. The organ hook, doubled on bass is really cool. The guitar part that goes with it is interesting. The halfway tempo shift is pretty cool. I might just be bored by Doug Ingle's vocals. The title track is cool. The bass and guitar sharing the instrumental hook is a fun trick that would echo for decades through rock music. It sounds a bit like self-parody now but that's a risk of experimenting and accidentally striking a chord with the zeitgeist. Problem: two songs do not an album make, even if one is 17 minutes long. Maybe if each was a whole record side. But that's not the case, here. I wouldn't suggest skipping this album (that'll be a 1/5 review that I don't think I've given, yet) but I wouldn't hesitate to skip some songs. And maybe wait till you've got the patience for 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. An all-time great organ solo though, and we don't have many of those. I guess it's a begrudging 3/5 (still a full point better than Kid Rock, at least) but The List will give you much better albums.

This album can be looked at as two distinct parts - the title track and the five songs that precede it. I found myself much more invested in the build-up, as the nearly 20-minute centerpiece didn't fully land for me. The first half consists of some solid psychedelic tracks that, while somewhat repetitive, allow the vocal performance to shine alongside serviceable riffs and acid-laced lyrics. The title track, however, feels uneven. It has some interesting moments, but I would have preferred more self-contained songs and less emphasis on scale. My favorite track is "My Mirage".

Groovy baby

So far, pretty milquetoast/boilerplate psychedelia. Sort of Beatles, sort of Doors, but not anywhere near as good. That trend remained all the way until the title track, which was 10x better than the rest of the album. This won't be fun to rate ⭐⭐ For the album ⭐⭐⭐⭐ For the song ⭐⭐⭐?

I'll always love the title track of this album, but I also listen to 45 minute extended Grateful Dead jams on a regular basis so..... The rest was alright. My limited knowledge of rock and roll history gives me some insight to the genre-defining moment this album's release was. 3.5 stars.

ganz chillig. 3.5.

36 minute album, last song is 14 minutes long, unexpected Garden of Eden. What a ride

Drum solo in the last song was the best part

Wannabe doors

The first half of this album contains 5 paint-by-numbers psych rock songs filled with every hippie-dippy cliché you can think of. You've got songs about flowers, beads, being groovy with a smattering of anxiety about Vietnam. The love songs on here are particularly sickly and mushy. There's nothing outright offensive on side one, but there is nothing standout either. The second side consists of one 17 minute track and would be the band's most known and celebrated song. Starting off with a killer psychedelic riff, the band then break out into extended jam where every instrument gets time to strut their stuff. For better or worse, you can blame this song for popularising the extended drum solo in rock music. I'd argue that this album does not belong on the 1001 albums list, but I have no issue on the title track making a list of 1001 songs to hear to hear before you die.

Felt like a generic psychedelic rock album. Nothing too special for me here.

It’s impossible for me to not think of the pure gold Simpsons episode when hearing this. The one where Bart switches the church hymn music, from “In The Garden of Eden” by I. Ron Butterfly to this. It’s brilliant. Does that cultural relevance make it musically relevant as well? Hard to say. I’ve never listened to Side A of this record, and it appears I wasn’t missing much. The single side 17-min back half is the obvious standout. Probably more so if I was high as kite. As a band, if you get featured on the Simpsons…well…what else matters.

An iconic closing track can’t quite drag this album above the average rating for me. Some decent material before you get to the title track, but nothing mind blowing

Most of this is quite mediocre. I really wanted to be hip and like the title track….but I was checking my watch waiting for it to end. Let’s wrap it up boys! I actually like the electric organ, but this was a lot. 2.5 and prob a coin flip if I go up or down.

Yesterday, I rounded down on an album that has a 17 minute final song...and today I am rounding up on an album that has a 17 minute final song. But it is THE 17 minute song after all. Still pretty meh on the album overall. 2.75/5

Wait a minute... this sounds like rock and/or roll. The entire rest of the album feels like a warmup to the title track, which continues to sound like the notoriously overambitious acid-rock staple it's known to be. Only let down by an otherwise lame drum solo, the organ work is masterfully done. I. Ron Butterfly's sound has always reminded me of Focus. Is Focus on this list? Fav tracks: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida

Trippy

Title track is incredible. Rest is forgettable.

It peaks too soon.

Never heard the whole thing. My art teacher showed our class the music video and told us if we sniff glue this is what we would sound like. 7/10

Generous 3

Groovin'

Carried by the title track, which is very decent!

"My Mirage" je kul. Zanimiv ritem vmes. Zanimiv drum solo. Ampak, one great song doesn't make a great album. Bolj ok.

Most Anything You Want - 3/5 Flowers and Beads - 3/5 My Mirage - 4/5 Termination - 4/5 Are You Happy - 3/5 In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - 5/5 Average score: 3.7/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ehhhh, last track was the only one worth listening to (even if it is hella long). i've heard better psych rock from better groups. didn't really care for the vocalist either

As cool as the main musical idea is, In Da Gadda Da Vida does not make this album great. It honestly just barely makes it good. I'd put this at a low 3. But everyone should hear the hook of the titular song.

Honestly id have rated this higher if they just chopped off all the fat and left the juicy meat. That being In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Phenomenal song. Watered down album.

Psychedelic 60s. It overall sounded good but I didn't need the 17 minute version of their band song.

The title track can't save this album from flower power mediocrity, as it's only about 1/3 good itself.

= the Beatles

Another Simpsons joke with way more depth than I appreciated

I like it, but not for everyone

Kävin kaupassa levyn nimikkokappaleen aikana, kunnon menoa.

The album is mercifully short but the song is mercilessly long. That said, the song makes this a 3 star release.

Acid Rock, perhaps? The title song is stuff of legends, at least to a certain subset of the cultural landscape, and the people that grew up hooked to The Simpsons, like I was. I think the record as a whole gets overshadowed by the title track, but its a listenable record overall. The psychedelic part is my favorite.

First impressions are of a group of bespectacled Austin Powers lookalikes in purple velvet suits. Very Doors sounding. I adore the keyboards on this. The guitar isn't too bad either. Subsequent listens highlight the mediocrity of the bass, drums and vocal though. Best track is the whole of side 2, although the drum solo spoils it a little, the keyboards ride to the rescue. I even caught a snippet of 'Good Rest Ye Merry Gentleman' in there. Biggest selling US Album of 1968 you say? It's not bad, but that surprised me.

Really liked it until the title track

The first couple songs are like Blood Sweat and Tears or something. The title track is good; I think I like the monumental excess of it? And it’s a really good riff. Not necessarily a great album, but one with some good elements!

Honestly I like music like this. Dug the A side, dug the B side. I wasn't compelled to immediately listen a second time, but I'd happily revisit this in the future!

It's okay - I only got 6 minutes into In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida before I gave up. Not something I'd opt to listen to on my own.

Wow, this is a blast from.the past. 60s psychedelic prog. I can remember first hearing this on the simpsons as a kid, then searching it out a few years later. My dad would go on to burn a copy of the cd for me, being the kick ass hippie/rocker that he was. Even if you don't remember any other track from the album, the title track is iconic. 3/5 based on that track. Unfortunately, the rest of the album is a bit....generic. Listening to this again for the first time in 25 years reveals why I probably put it away for the first time. There's a lot of good ideas, but I think if they had created more in this vein then we could have had another truly special band in the same place as The Doors. Instead we got budget Doors and Windows.

A song does not need to be 17 minutes long. Overall album ain't bad 5.5/10 3.3/5

Was expecting something a bit more Velvety but it was still quite trippy.

I thought the title track was really nice, and I'm glad that I have heard it now since there are so many jokes about the name. Nothing about the album was bad, but I didn't like it enough to rate it in the upper end of my range.

it was extremely fine. 17 minutes is a really long time to be playing a song. some might even say too long.

I can only see The Simpsons episode when I hear this song. And It really is the 1 song isn't it. It's an interesting track but like the album cover it's just interesting. 3 Stars for nostalgia and Rev Lovejoy. It's rock and or roll.

Pretty dire to begin with but the final 2 tracks are impressive. I will listen to more of them just from those tracks alone.

I liked it and worth exploring further.

It was fine, but I doubt I’ll remember such outside of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. 2.5 / 5

favorite - flowers and beads 7/10

Good but short!

Really nice

Odd, proggy, chaotic - a forerunner of GOAT? My first introduction to this band was via The Simpsons and it’s an association that won’t budge.

The first side is oddly appealing. The second side, well, you know.

It’s not bad but also not very interesting. I can let it play in the background without paying attention to it.

Some pretty fun psychedelia but the vocals sound like vocals I sing ironically to annoy my wife. The title track is great. Overall I like it but as an album, it doesn't blow me away.

This was cool! I enjoyed it. The title track is the whole reason for the album. It’s fantastic. Psychy and weird. It’s a rad song.

old Doug Ingle. . . lol, Tidal has him listed as "Doug Tingle"

Honestly kinda average and I’ve never loved the title track especially as a 17 minute long song, the shortened version is decent but this is too long

Interesting, not exactly The Pink Floyd but still pretty good. Lyrically a bit poor but music wise very enjoyable, especially the guitar. I’d never heard of this band till today so the list strikes again!

My dad had this one when I was a kid. The album cover was different

Terrific 17 minutes of psychadelic rock to finish

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a classic. I have no problem with a long jam, but, it is too long. And although there are some solid tracks, so this album. Highlights: "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and "Stone Believer"

Overall: 5/10 5 mediocre songs and one absolute banger of epic length. I almost want to relisten to this at a later date after taking obscene amounts of mushrooms. I was also told by a friend that Iron Butterfly were a super heavy band, but I don't agree. Even for the time, there were heavier groups than this. Fav Song: In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida

early psychedelic acid rock and a 17 minute one side track - the sort of song that gets the aux snatched off you. Similar vein to doors etc.

Groovy! Typ 3,5

No me atrapo

Well other than the title track there’s not much here, but what an epic track

A couple strong tracks and I don’t really think the title track quite gets there. There is some great music going on behind the lyrics and way-too-serious vocal delivery. This came out in 1969… go back two years and find the Doors first album doing everything this was trying to do, so much more successfully. But hey, getting a classic from 1969 is welcome nevertheless.

What started as fairly pedestrian psychedelic rock ended in a defining and self-indulgent sinister sounding track from which the album derives its title. Apparently, they have other songs and albums. I have no interest in hearing them.

This album by I. Ron Butterfly is a perfectly cromulent album whose noble spirit embiggens the smallest man. 3 stars.

Crusty but legendary late sixties acid rock that helped forged heavy metal. In A Gadda Da Vida is a jam… literally for 17 shaky sprawling minutes. Pretty much the riff of Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love played on organ, it’s also a timeless church hymn and basis of one the all great opening scenes in The Simpsons. The other side of the record is ok if a bit patchy and sounds like Frank Zappa if he was trying to make sincere hippie dippie flower power baroque rock splodge. A 3.5 mainly for the influentialness of title song and also for the Simpsons factor.

I was going to write that for some reason Iron Butterfly seemed like a punchline as a millennial kid, but then I thought about it and realized that memory was probably entirely rooted in the Reverend Lovejoy “I. Ron Butterfly” gag. Sort of surprised to enjoy this as much as I did, I’m not big on rock organ but some of this was a lot of fun.

It's a fun 1 hit. The album as a whole is good but wouldn't make my top 1000 cut.

Recht typischer 60er Rock. Kein echtes Highlight aber auch nichts, was stört. 3/5

I. Ron Butterfly

Some doors style organ action

Very 70's Psychedelic. great extended version of the title track. one to keep an eye out for defo 3

It’s like Prog, but in more palatable bite size chunks! Until the title track of course. But that was an epic 17 minutes. Better than any other Prog I’ve listened to, so a solid 3 from me.

Prog royalty. But thankfully before they became prog. This was a solid album of good tunes. Even the 17 minute monster on the B side didn't feel too much of a chore to listen to. A pleasant surprise.

Good ol acidic fun - feel fairly middle of the road about this. Not sure the last track needed to be 17 mins but it was fairly inoffensive - maybe less drum solos?

They struck gold with the title track, but mixed about 14 minutes of bronze into it to completely diminish its splendor. The other tracks? Nothing precious about those metals either. Standard fare psychedelia.

The title song is the most noteworthy thing, and other people would do extended jams better.

It was fine - I feel pretty neutral about this one

This went on! And helped with a Simpsons joke. Very stoner energy

Title track is great, rest is a bit so-so.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida!! Love that riff and the keyboards. As for the rest of the album, yeah, it's okay. If not for In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, probably a 2.5. Now a 3.5, but I can't round it up; the rest is just too ordinary. 3.00

I classic song on a forgetful album

I mean I don’t hate it. There’s good parts. There’s average parts. There’s also 11 minute alternating solos. The Simpsons referencing it gives them an extra half rounding them up to a 3/5.

It's ok, very 60s.

It's fine, the song drags a bit.

Actually quite enjoyed this. is new to me, in the main. Was almost as bonkers throughout as the title track, which I did alreadyknow. One of those albums that seemed like it was made because the band wanted to make it and enjoyed doing so, rather than any 'higher' purpose. It is a little overblown in places, but that seems indicative of the time it was made as much as anything. Fun. And the typography on the cover is top notch.

28/11/2025 It was definitely different, that's for sure. Spotify listeners: 312.1k

Bonus points for being obviously influential on a lot of music I love. It’s just a little too acid rock / psychedelia for me.

Fairly standard 60s pop rock for the most part. The last track has a great riff that cream completely stole for sunshine of your love and would have been a great 3 minute track bit they decided to pad it out with some jam sections that didn't go anywhere and an underwhelming drum solo. That's about it really, I think it's a 2.5.

I only really enjoyed In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, the other tracks were non-starters (totally forgettable). One absolutely brilliant song does not a great album make.

I thought I knew the name iron butterfly from a Simpsons episode, but after listening to most of the album I thought I must've been wrong, but that song was there and I was correct! Must be decades since I've seen that episode. I also thought the lyrics were "in the garden of Eden", again from the Simpsons and on looking that's the lyrics they used in the episodes. Anyway, enough rambling...... The album was very 60s psychedelic rock. But nothing really stood out as special. It's all fine, but ultimately forgettable. The baseline in in-a-gadda-da-vida is great, but I don't need a 17 minute long track. 3, likely won't be back but it's ok. The name suggests something more interesting

I think the album shines with "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", a mysterious, 17 minutes long, scary, funky, ballady, legendary song, and the rest of the album is just appetizers that don't really increase my appetite.

Rock and or roll

1st song was good. Second song was pretty good. I forgot to rate the other but so far “Are you happy” is really good. I’m not sure if I like the vocal on it but the instrumental is really good. Self titled song is really long but amazing.

Pretty catchy, I do have a soft spot for some psychedelia. Hang on, this is the song from that episode of The Simpsons!

Really enjoyable psychedelic rock album. There's hard rock, pop, and some early heavy metal in these songs. Side A is a fun batch of shorter songs, and Side B is the 17-minute title track "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida." I had fun jamming to this today. 3.5 Side note: I've been paying more attention to fonts lately and man oh man, the font on this album cover is terrible! It's obviously dated but even still... those I's and A's look ridiculous.

Interessant. Are you happy føles ut som mario kart gjennom slottet til bowser. Funker.

Vibes: 2/5 Instruments: 4/5 Production: 4/5 Emotional Value: 3/5 Storytelling: 2/5 Stand Outs: Termination, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida Overall Rating: 3

The tracks before In-a-gadda-da-vida are just backfill and waiting for this legendary 17 minute jam. 3.5

The same song repackaged throughout the album. But I liked the song so I was ok with this.

The A-side was standard-grade rock noise and not particulaly enjoyable. The B-side was one of the oldest and greatest classic rock songs of all time.

Well, they're not Iron Maiden, are they? All pretty forgettable, although I can see how the album might have been considered groundbreaking in its day.

Needs more iron, less butterfly.

god-tier title track, the rest of the album does not compare. 3.55/5

Not terrible but they're pretty much a one hit wonder band

I like 60s psychedelia so this was enjoyable. I love the album cover too. My son's really big into Jelle's Marble Run.

Hey Marge. Remember making out to this hymn?

interesting rock fusion thing

A bit The Doors-y.

I remember playing this song in marching band. Luckily not the 17 minute version of it

shout out to my cousin Kelly, who used to put this on every morning when she woke up and would challenge herself to be completely ready for school by the time it ended. not a great song, but I agree it is something you have to listen to before you die.

Its great psychedelic rock but its not my psychedelic rock

The I. Ron Butterfly gag in the Simpsons still brings a big dumb grin to my face whenever I hear this band, well let’s face it, song

Awesome 60’s psychedelic experience.

Flowers and Beads // Termination // In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida 3.5/5

I did not appreciate the 17 min long song at the end of the album 3/5

Enjoyed this quite a bit. Title track is of course a classic and I liked some other stuff on here.

This really feels like these dudes wrote "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and then needed some extra tunes to make an LP so they threw some together without a ton of thought. I honestly don't think those extra tunes are all that bad, but there wasn't anything nearly as memorable as that big, fat, nasty riff in the title track.

Lowkey monolithic.

It was ok

The title track gets a 4, and that's a bit generous. The riff is great, it's way too long. The rest is generic late 60s rock, some of it bad, some of it boring. Overall, probably around 2.5.

Pretty fun and interesting. I recently scored this album at the thrift store and when I got it home the album inside was the wrong one! Boooooooo! 3.5/5 because it's a classic. Would buy the LP but not the CD. The 17 min title track has an irritatingly boring bass line that just b repeats and repeats and repeats.

One good song. Not into jam bands from this era. It's ok 3.1

I can understand the critical acclaim for their influences on “acid rock,“ and the future of heavy metal. But like most one hit wonders, I can also see why they did not have much staying power. The one song is really their only good one, and to me sounds more and more like a punchline every time I hear it.

Title track is definitely a classic and fun to listen to once in a while. The rest of the album is kinda bland psychedelia. 3.5*

it was ok. Again, not a big fan of this genre of music. Nothing really stood out for me and I found it quite generic to similar artists from that era (the doors etc), the last song was the best song, the rest was a bit generic. It is not making me want to go out and discover more about them. Standard 3 stars

The first half is kinda generic 60's psychedlic rock. It reminded me of the Doors. The second half is quite the journey with the title song. It's suuuuuper long, but pretty fun and satisfying in the end.

Could probably skip this and just listen to The Doors, honestly.

Entertaining but not worth returning to

Ugh. When I saw this was my album for the day, I was not looking forward to it. Mainly because its kind of everything I dislike about 60s music. What really drives me up the wall are the organs. Once the organ made its appearance, it seemed to be in every song. You hear an organ in a song, it's most likely the 60s. I began listening and the organ was there, but it didin’t drive me crazy. But I’ll admit I almost quit listening and was just going to chalk this up to a Roni Size album, unlistenable. But I persevered, dammit! As I continued, I started to groove a bit. I’m certain In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was the only song I had heard from this album. The other songs are alright. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is the highlight, especially the 17-minute album version. I mean, there’s a 3-minute drum solo in the middle. I think the reason this album is in the 1,001 albums you need to hear is just for history's sake. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was arguably the first attempt at heavy metal, though I’m sure some could provide earlier examples. The other songs are just good examples of 60s rock, but nothing special. I’d say you don’t even have to hear the other songs, but listening to the 17-minute version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is a must, at least once.

The first half of this record is fairly disposable psychedelic rock — competent but forgettable, the kind of late-60s filler you’d expect to find in any bargain-bin psych compilation. Then comes the second half: the infamous 17-minute epic 𝘐𝘯-𝘈-𝘎𝘢𝘥𝘥𝘢-𝘋𝘢-𝘝𝘪𝘥𝘢, supposedly a drunken slur of 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘥𝘦𝘯. It lurches forward on a massive organ riff, fuzz guitar, and a pounding drum solo, equal parts hypnotic and absurd. Pop-culture sealed its legend when 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 reimagined it as the church hymn 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘥𝘦𝘯 by I. Ron Butterfly in 𝘉𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘏𝘪𝘴 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘭. That joke sums up the track perfectly — it’s overblown and ridiculous, but also undeniable fun. As an album, it’s lopsided: one iconic jam surrounded by mediocrity. Still, that jam alone secured Iron Butterfly a place in rock history.

epic title track, and the reason why i am giving it 3/5.

Not my favorite psych record for the sole reason that outside of the title track the rest of the album is rather forgettable.

Not my favorite early stuff
