Surprisingly good, and all-star guest appearances
Good shit
good
Cocaine rap isn't my favorite thing, but the lyricism is on point. Best track: The Champ.
Really enjoyed this one
2006. Key Songs: R.A.G.U, 9 Milli Bros, Shakey Dog
Like most hip hop albums... it’s a tad long. But pretty pretty good 👌
Shakey Dog
There were definitely some standout tracks on here, like Barbershop and the really great closer Momma, but I think the more East Coast hip hop I hear on this list, the less East Coast hip hop I need to hear overall. Come on, give us some more West Coast already!!
Nothing too mindblowing, but it's a solid rap album! The production is consistently great, and Ghostface Killah's flow is especially smooth on top of the more soulful beats. Also, the skits on this are fun! Bring back actual rap skits!!! Weirdly enough, the one track that I thought aged the worst (sonically, at least) is the final one with B.I.G.. The rhymes are clean, but the instrumental sounds like some free "grimy type beat" you'd find on YouTube. Standouts: The Champ • R.A.G.U. • Back Like That • Be Easy • Big Girl • Momma
This album felt stylistically all over the place. I enjoyed some tracks but felt out of the loop on others. Some really good raps from others featured on some songs as well.
Ghostface Killah’s rapping sounds effortless, smooth as butter. The beats go hard. The album would benefit from a trim.
This manages to stay interesting all the way through and it’s a nice switch since this list seems to not have many rap records so far. 7/10
Meh
Not really for me
It's fine. A few songs on this album are really good. Most are ok.
Old school rap / hip hop with cool backbeats and dollops of intelligence amid the drugs-and-violence lyrics. It takes a bit of an effort to plough through a whole albums of this nowadays, but it’s pretty good.
One of the better hip hop albums I’ve encountered. Few of the aversive turntable smeary sounds and a couple of really catchy tracks. May actually listen again voluntarily.
Bra men ganska utdragen.
I'm glad I read the positive reviews and didn't skip this. A rare rap album that I didn't feel entirely alienated from. Saying that, there's always so much swearing and death, isn't there? But: some great funky melodic backing stuff going on, giving it a totally 70s vibe. I'm going to say this VERY quietly, but I thought it wasn't a million miles away from Hamilton in places; it's his voice and phrasing. He's a great natural storyteller, as is his reputation.
Finally a wu-tang project actually worth listening to.
This was let down by the length, I think... I really enjoyed the tracks individually, but this is a rating for the overall album, and it was too much to listen to start to finish without getting slightly bored or it feeling tedious at times. A good album should flow from top to bottom, and sometimes tell a story in a way. This doesn't feel like it does that due to its length. Again, the tracks individually are really good to listen to, with some outshining some of the others by quite a margin. I enjoyed the beats, lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation. Favourites: Whip You With A Strap Back Like That Kilo
twas aight, big on da gangsta life n shit but lowk mid ngl.
Got through 75 % of this and bailed. It takes skill and talent, no doubt, just not for me. 3 stars
I don't get this Skits stuff; it's just superfluous. I'm no Rap fan, but I respect Wu Tang, and this was pretty decent, not like the Raekwon album.
Dropping the needle on Ghostface Killah’s Fishscale brings an immediate wave of intense ennui. It is yet another mid-2000s rap album built on the exact same predictable foundations. You get the standard cinematic soul samples, gritty tales of cocaine cooking, and dense street slang. While the production is crisp, it feels completely indistinguishable from dozens of other highly acclaimed records from that specific era. Tony Starks delivers his signature frantic energy, but the formula feels exhausted. It is a well-crafted but Ultimately generic time capsule.
Great album! Didnt know big girl was from Ghost. Loved it!
Pretty good! Not as good as Wu-Tang, but I enjoyed it.
It was ok. 3/5
Pretty solid.
Again, cringey skits bringing an otherwise pretty good rap album down.
Bäst är Kilo, The Champ, Back like That, Be easy, Dogs of war.
Like it 3/5
Too much fish, not enough scale
Open track/skit had me a bit worried. Though I would not like this but really liked it as it got going. Great collabs and I really liked ghostface. Only way I can think of describing his style is relentless. Shakey Dog is a great example. He just goes hard in the paint and I liked it. A little long and heart street directions was stupid. Oh and Kilo was great. Sounded like some gangsta school house rock. “All around the world today, the kilo is the measure. A kilo is one thousand grams. Easy to remember.” Love it. 3.5 but I’m just not there to round up. Very close.
A few catchy songs that I liked the sound of, a fair few filler songs and I didn’t enjoy the skits that much
it was decent
Decent, catchy at times, but on first listen nothing that upped it to a 4 for me.
Didn't mind that
probably wouldn't listen to it again but i liked a few of the songs and liked the album as a whole
Solid Wu spin off, great production, samples and beats as always with RZA.
Solid
A lot of intense subject matter. Ghostface is smart in both his social critique & his rhymes. The musicality is high level, although he loses me when he tries to sing. The album suffers a bit in its composition, GF is a bit unsure which character he wants to present— street sage, young punk, womanizer, or defender of women. I should listen again, but for now this is a 3+.
I really enjoyed the Wu Tang Clan album I had previously, and there were elements of it here but not as consistent for me.
It has its moments. Overall kinda meh for me, with a few standout tracks.
Drie sterren. Het is niet anders.
🐝
Haven't seen this guy since 30 Rock! Great beats
Not bad. Some decent tracks here, good production. A bit long, but a lot of albums from this genre are.
I had a rough time with this initially, but then it gradually got better by the second half, which is surprising because I usually just dislike an album I’m already not enjoying as I continue listening on. I liked the Iron Man stuff.
This was ok, but ultimately not very memorable with nothing that leapt out. Blended in to the background. I’m dithering between 2 or 3 but will probably end on 3 as I don’t think it was bad. Just pretty non-descript.
Another album I worry that some of the themes are not ones I should be enjoying - but on a first listen I liked it quite a lot.
I can't say I loved this one but it was pretty good for what it was
Track numbers are according the extendad version on streaming platforms) Track 4 is such a banger, man... Also 9 and 10. 13 has very interesting production. 14 is really sweet. It actually starts a ran With the hard hitting 15, the incredibly produced 16 17. MF Doom production. 21 is a strong track 22 is another doom production. Nice one. 24 Is lush and lovely. One of my favorites here. I'll tell you what, It's a good album. With some bangers, and hard ones aswell. I really appreciate Ghostfece's rapping, and most of the production (especially MF DOOM, I mean...) as well. But I think it's to long. And some songs fell back to the sound that I less appreciate, of the 2000's hip hop scene. Still, got to respect it with a 3.
I wish I was more of a Wu-Tang Clan fan (or even afficionado), but there's something about each album from the Clan in this collection that just doesn't click for me. In some ways, though, "Fishscale" might be one of the more accessible and entertaining of the Clan-related albums so far, and I enjoyed his plentiful 60s throwback samples throughout. It's far too long (at least twice as long) for what it delivers, which seems to be de rigor for most of the hip-hop albums in this collection, and the skits are just annoying and useless, unfortunately. The highlights for me among the 20+ tracks are probably "Kilo", "Whip you with a strap" and "Be easy" (both versions).
Some great moments but hasn't aged well.
Smooth production, great lyricist... all you can ask for in hip hop. A good album but nothing really stood out as amazing. It's a solid 3.5/5.
I liked it. Nice beats and flow. Favorite songs: Kilo, The Champ, Be Easy, Underwater
This slaps for the most part
alright
The first half was a lot more captivating than the second. Seemed like he was fishing for a hit later in the album. Loved the first half though.
Cocaine tales, Wu-tang Clipse of doom
I don't know if this is good or not, and I have no business telling anyone I do.
Not the biggest rap fan
Nice for it's age, pretty listenable, but nothing particular that surprised or impressed me.
Very good album
This is a really solid rap record, good variety of beats and styles which I think helps because Ghostface Killah has a very specific delivery. Love the Dilla beats :)
26/03/2026 1. the return of clyde smith (skit) - not much to say! *2. shakey dog - like the beat... bass is nice. loove the horns. lyrics are reaaallly nice! *3. kilo - loooove the scratching and sampling immediately!! horns and bass are fantastic! *4. the champ - looove the beat drop! energy in this is fantastic!! guitar is great!! looove the wrestling bell!! lyrics are innsaaanee!!!! rip they guts out like a hysterectomy!!!??? samples are phenomenal!! scratching near the end! 5. major operation (skit) - this is literally six seconds. 6. 9 milli bros - loove the piano sample. really nice :) 7. beauty jackson - the strings! the bass! nice! love the end! 8. heart street directions (skit) - not massive on this skit lol. great ending!! 9. columbus exchange (skit) - 10 seconds.... 10. crackspot - had to change the version of the album to listen to this one... love the beat! love the strings and horns! *11. r.a.g.u. - love the sampling and strings throughout this album!! real nice again!! 12. bad mouth kid (skit) - not commenting on the skits anymore!! *13. whip you with a strap - love the sample and the siren sound... 14. back like that - nice! very smooth! *15. be easy - oo liking the start!! love the scratching. horns are great! *16. clipse of doom - love the guitar? electronic drone? in the background!! 17. jellyfish - still reallly liking this album, but getting sooo long right bow! love the organ? in the background. nice :) 18. dogs of war - definitely feeling the longness right now! still not bad though :) *19. barbershop - oooo love it! strings, bass and drums are fantastic!!! loove the backing vocals... 20. ms. sweetwater (skit) - 21. big girl - love the backing vocals and the organ in the back! good message i think? 22. underwater - liking the start... niice :) 23. the ironman takeover (skit) - 24. momma - the horn at the start.... kindof western? love the bass! like the rap sections more than the singing. not as mad on this one.... might be because i'm on track twenty-four!!!! 25. three bricks - as much as i've liked this album, i'm not complaining that it's almost over. not massive on this one either :/ reaallly liked the whole album, but my favourites were definitely 2-4 (completely phenomenal!!!) so it felt like it kindof fizzled out a bit, especially with the length of it.... an hour isn't toooo much, but with the sheer amount of tracks, it started getting a bit boring around track 16 - which would be fine if it had a normal amount of tracks, but isn't great when you still have nine more to go!
Maybe not as strong as some of the other Wu Tang solos and offshoots, but still plenty of great stuff here.
Gangsta!!
Pffft. This isn’t any different than anything else I’ve heard in this genre. Would I listen again? No.
6/10 The previous album by a wu tang clan member I got on this list still tops my list for the worst albusm so far (505 albums in), so I didn't have high expectations coming in. However, this one surprised me. It's not at all bad actually. It's still too long, the lyrics still contain a bit too much of the same hiphop cliches (and I care more for music than for lyrics anyway which is one of the reasons hiphop isnt generally my cup of tea), but the storytelling is better than most and the beats were fun and very listenable. Highlights: Shakey Dog Underwater
So this isn't my thing. But. I wasn't bored, at least not usually.
Fun album. Not my favourite to come out of the WuTang camp, or even my favourite Ghostface album, but there are some great tracks here.
Liked this more than I thought I would although it is a very long album - the skits were not as abrupt as other ones in other albums
The back end of this album is much better than the start.
I'll never forget the grand in a kilo again
Not a fan of hip-hop.
generic rap album, not bad, not good?
Just not my fav hip hop
ok
All-star cast, but was pretty indifferent listening to this, 3-stars seems appropriate.
I like his delivery and some great samples in here, like the Clubber Lang sections in The Champ, but there’s also a lot of the same old stuff including seemingly endless skits that just made it tiresome after a while.
Fun but went on a bit too long
I wish one could give half’s 🤷♀️
Nice
I like a good rap album with skits. It’s nostalgic and can be clever. This wasn’t my favorite… but respect the artistry. 2.5
This was more enjoyable than I was expecting. I still struggle to follow the storytelling in rap, which is certainly part of my struggle with it. But this album had a lot of diversity and, while it was a bit long, I wasn’t bored. I feel like, despite my ambivalence, I can recognize good rap, and I think this qualifies. 6/10 Pretty Good
I like it less than the GZA and the RZA albums on this list. Ghostface is an icon. Again my allegiance lies with Method Man. This album is great, showcases 2005 rap style and production in excellent fashion. Ghostface demonstrates vernacular and slang in combined, almost educated rhymes and elevates the end product. I think if you wanted to step back and say "lets look at a list of '05 greatest rap albums'". This one might not be on it. But its reliable and sounds great for '05 standards. But not really a stand out piece. I prolly give it 3 stars for that chief.
About as good as a Rap album gets for me. 3 stars or C-.
Not my favourite genre but there were some great beats on this album. Back Like That and Be Easy in particular were really catchy. Once again the skits are cringey and terrible.
A bit scary. Good dog sample.
Gear: Focalman Cleardara Artwork: 😎🔦🥷 Production: ⚠️🌑🎚️ Music: 🎛️🖊️🔥 Rating: 👻👻👻(👻)/5
Pretty good! I thought this was fun! Had some hard hitting songs too that were pretty emotional. Was doing a kind of gnarly work out at the same time so that made it a little hard to focus but still liked it. 3 ⭐️
it's something
While I'm surprised that Supreme Clientele didn't make the list, but a shockingly good Ghostface album.
This was about what I expected. It was good but really not something I would normally listen to.
Tried to like it, but no. It just grinds away. Maybe if the album was shorter?? Not terrible, but clearly not my taste.
Not perverse. Solid ideas. Didn't dread listening to rap on here for once.
MF DOOM production with Ghostface rhymes. What more could you ask for? (A shorter run time)
I thought this was a good album overall with some great producers. On the flip side, I don’t think this one belongs on the "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die" list. In the grand scheme of things, it’s just an average, middle-of-the-road hip hop album of its time.
Nice flows, nice instrumentals, but a bit too long for me. Albums over an hour I can only really enjoy if I'm really into it, otherwise it just becomes overkill and the album just shoots itself in the foot.
I love hiphop, this is the kind that I like to listen to but don't get obsessed over. Most songs are good, some I would rate 4 or 4.5, most I would rate between a 3 and 3.5. High 3.
Ca 50/50 bra dårlig
I don’t know enough about hip-hop to put Ghostface Killah or Fishscale into any kind of context, but I know it’s rated as one of his best. I enjoyed the album. It’s intense and gritty and he’s a clever storyteller with genuine depth. He also has a notable talent for the less obvious lyric. I really liked the more soul influenced tracks, especially “Back Like That”. Alongside the cinematic “Shakey Dog” - probably my favourites. 7/10
Wu-Tang albums are like insanely sweet foods. They’re so good, like really good. And obviously someone very skilled made it. But it’s almost so good it spites itself and loses any realistic luster.
Overlong, but I love Shakey Dog
The sound is too big and in-your-face, it’s too long, and the skits are pretty much all wastes of time. The fact that this still kinda rips despite all that is impressive. Best song: Back Like That
This one just didn’t click for me. Clearly lots of talent this album - great bars, the production is the kind of thing I normally love - but it just didn’t connect. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a skit on a hip hop album that’s improved the experience. Maybe I need to go and listen to more Wu Tang first and then see if I enjoy this one more.
Was fine, didn't have much chance to listen in detail.
Starting this one off strong with a track of talking with a voice modifier on. Something, which, unfortunately I hate, whoever does it. Moving in to the first track, Shakey Dog, yeah ok, gotta give it to this guy, he has a good flow. Still not my type of music, but gotta appreciate great flow when it slaps you across the face. Kilo: I was vibing until I realized it was about drug dealing, then I took a brief pause, and continued to vibe. If I hadn’t have already graduated high school, this would be a good way to remember a Kilos worth 1000 grams. Jokes aside, the next song, the Champ, made me audibly laugh at the line “rip her guts out like a hysterectomy”. Honestly enjoyed the song. 9 Milli Bros was good. Nothing really else to say about it. Actively disliked Beauty Jackson. The next “skit”, well if I wanted to listen to traffic instructions I’d put on Google Maps. I did unironically like Crack Spot though. R.A.G.U had really good lyrics and I really liked it. Unfortunately, the positivity ends there (for now). Whip you with a strap was almost unlistenable. The actually rapping was alright and the lyrics were heartbreaking, but, the woman singing throughout was honestly horrible. Back like that was fun. I love Ne-yos voice, so it was nice to hear him on this album. I also really appreciate the level of petty hatred on Be Easy. I loved it. Clipse of Doom was also a good song. The purposeful off key singing on Jellyfish threw me off a bit. Similar to other albums I’ve listened to in this genre, it’s honestly started to lose me a bit at this point. I appreciated the chiller background for the first half of barbershop! Big Girl was also a highlight of a song for me, so was Three Bricks. It honestly reminded me of an action movie in the best way possible. Ok, well that was an album. 3/5 ⭐️. I feel like I’ve said this a lot recently, but there were a lot of genuinely good moments, but there were just some bits that were painful to get through. I like this guys flow and some of these are so good, but I struggled to get into it. 17/1089
I didn't hate it. Giving an extra 1/2* considering the genre. 3.5*
Better than I though even with all the stupid skits
I liked a few of the tracks, but wasn't really into it for most of it.
No. 73 As someone without much experience with hiphop, but no hate for it, I liked this album.
Solid if not revolutionary
This was pretty good. I loved the heavy baselines and dusty drums. These matched with Ghostface Killahs superb and energetic delivery made it a very enjoyable listen. As someone who normally sometimes doesn’t like skits in albums, these ones were actually really funny, and did a great job of planting us in his world. By the end I would say I was a little worn out as I didn’t find the last stretch as entertaining as the first. However I still enjoyed this, but I don’t see myself returning to it. Highlights were, Shakey Dog, Kilo, The Champ, R.A.G.U, and Be Easy.
I did enjoy and I am really stuck between 3-4 stars, didn't get time for a second listen so I think I might have to stick with a very high 3.
I like this guy
easy to pick up where action bronson was inspired
Impressive story telling by Ghostface and strong hooks
Fun to listen to and considering all of the people involved feels like an album with a story. Favorite songs: The Champ, Be Easy, Back Like That
It was just too long. 3/5
Sick beats, meh lyrics, whack skits.
I liked some of the music in this one
I've being having a headache and nasal congestion all day, but I don't think it altered my experience with this album that much, and to make it sure, I think I have listened to this about 6 times. This is a decent hip hop album. It is one hour and six minutes approximately, and it contains 25 tracks, of which, 7 are skits, but with 18 actual songs remaining, it still is very beefy. Thankfully, almost all the songs have very similar tones and ideas: Great beats with great flow, delivery and attitude. That's not to say that there are no highlights or that all of the songs are equal. There's enough variety in here and I specially liked the energy of the track 'The Champ', the sentimentalism in the songs 'Whip you With a Strap' and 'Momma', 'Barbershop' because including a diss track to his barber is super funny, the dark atmosphere of 'Three Bricks' and the choruses sang by featured artists in 'Back Like That' and 'Momma'. Also, I have to mention that they used J Dilla beats in the songs 'Beauty Jackson' and 'Whip you With a Strap'. So while I wasn't very impressed about this record, I thought it was very funny and entertaining.
I liked it, have to give another listen to & really pay attention. Good stories and word play, I think the flow just felt rushed and didn’t grab me.
This was a long album, but it has some pretty dope tracks. Top tracks: Whip You With a Strap, Underwater, Kilo, Shakey Dog
Plague of too long rap albums hit the genre hard in the 2000s & this doesn't avoid it but there are some tracks on this that go really hard. Fav tracks: 9 Milli Bros, Be Easy, Jellyfish
#786. A perfectly fine example of negroe poetry. 3/5: acceptable
Album No. 0083 on my list. I didn't have high expectations for this album, because I've had a few not-so-good hip hop albums on my list recently. I was pleasantly surprised about this album however, it's not half bad! I like the rapping style, I like some of the lyrics, all quite decent actually. Not all songs were super memorable to me, and I don't really need any of the skits, but I'll definitely add "Kilo", "Whip You With A Strap", and "Back Like That" to my playlist. 3/5 stars.
for the sake of saving myself a bit of time, i'm excluding skits in my rating Shakey Dog - 5/5 Kilo - 4/5 The Champ - 4/5 9 Milli Bros. - 2/5 Beauty Jackson - 2/5 Crack Spot - 3/5 R.A.G.U. - 3/5 Whip You With a Strap - 3/5 Back Like That - 5/5 Be Easy - 4/5 Clipse of Doom - 3/5 Jellyfish - 2/5 Dogs of War - 3/5 Barbershop - 1/5 Big Girl - 3/5 Underwater - 3/5 Momma - 3/5 Three Bricks - 3/5 Average score: 3.1/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ another album i put off as long as humanly possible because of how long the track list is. i say it almost every review of an album this long, i can't STAND the overuse of skits that were so common on albums of the 2000s. gotta be one of my biggest musical pet peeves that point aside, i guess this was alright. no strong feelings about this release, though i enjoyed some tracks in the last half more than the first
Overall, I enjoyed it and tried to ignore some of the lyrics
I'm biased as GFK is one of my favorites of all time. It's not a 5 star rap album, but is good and showcases his unique style.
Admittedly, I haven't listened to all that much rap. Of what I have heard, I'd say this is mid-tier. I did like the music. Far better than a lot of the crap out there. Lyrically, though, it's thematically so typical it's basically a cliche.
ah yes, the only album Action Bronson has ever listened to. Real talk though, it's a good one.
OK
3.1 2x
I really liked “Kilo”.
Propper Hip-Hop
A lot of good bars and songs I liked here
Good vibes on this album I’m discovering. The lyrics often have a touch of humor, and the groove is heavy but smooth. I love his flow, but I kind of wish his voice wasn’t so high, a darker tone would’ve been amazing. The Wu-Tang DNA is everywhere thanks to the features, and that’s cool. I need more time to really make the whole thing mine, but I’ll come back to it.
3.0
I could make a great 30 minute album from these tracks. Skits and a few filler songs hold it back from a 4
-definitely not my favorite Wu-Tang Clan member solo project of the ones i’ve heard so far, but it holds up pretty well -liked the flow a decent amount and the features made the album. imo it’s waaay too long but whatever -Favorites: Shakey Dog, The Tramp, Clipse of Doom
Oldschool, goldschool. FAVO: The Champ, Whip you with a strap, Be Easy, Three Bricks
This album is kinda a mess, but I think that is part of its charm. The kits are forgettable interludes, but that’s ok cause there’s great track spread throughout the album. But that’s sort of the problem/quirk of this album which is it feels like going through someone else’s mess. There’s junk everywhere and you have to dig to find what you like. I think most of the time the skits just kinda got in the way of the music and didn’t add a lot the experience. But here’s the cheat sheet, if you just wanna skip to the good stuff, here are the 4 tracks that make this album worth listening to: The Champ, 9 Milli Bros, Be Easy, and Three Bricks. Those 4 songs are great. You could probably skip the rest.
Rage and rhythm
Genre: Hardcore Hip Hop I like hip hop, and I really love the production all throughout this project, but 80 minutes of Ghostface's near-shouting delivery is rough. The guest apperances feel like breathers compared to the rest of the verses here. Ghostface is a great MC, and like I said, certianly accumulated quite the beat collection, but I found it grating. Unfortunate. 3/5
what’s with all the long albums lately! but as someone who has a hard time with rap albums sounding the same throughout the whole thing, i thought this one had a bit more variety (although i hate little skits on an album)
Probably a 3.5. We’ll see how I feel when it’s time to put in the rating.
The beats are dope and the bars have bite. But too many skits and over length makes this only a decent outing but not a bona fide classic. The guest spots slam, especially a nice surprise cameo from Ice Cube. But Kanye's appearance was unnecessary. Fine but could have been more.
Good
Wutang solo isn't ever as good as the whole thing. This one was fine, but similarly to when it came out I had a hard time wanting to come back to it. 2.5/5
Will never understand the need for long spoken word expletive interludes but we don't know much about the nuance of rap and hip hop. Some of this was decent with some good rhythm. Others didn't really stand out.
Okay album, nothing special
Does every Wu Tang member get a solo album on the generator so nobody feels left out? This is by no means bad, it's just one of those that doesn't scream 'all-timer' to me. Apparently the storytelling is top-tier but I didn't really get that from my 2 listens. Maybe that's on me. There are a few standout moments (like Be Easy & the maths lesson on Kilo), and I preferred the vibrant production on this - especially the MF Doom contributions - to those murky 90s WTC solo albums, so I gotta rank it slightly higher.

Good beats, killer flow. Can't believe this dude keeps trying to stab Neve Campbell.
Well done Mr. Killah. Better than the WTC album. And I liked the first third, but then it got long and had many flaws of other hip hop albums of the period. But his style and production were enjoyable. But then it had the worst skit I've heard on an album across this entire project in Heart Street Directions. So no more than a 3.
Not too bad however it is very long.
Ganz cooles, gut produziertes Rapalbum.
Meh. Slightly updated formula, with some really nice beats, but it feels like a decade behind its time. And ghosts hectic delivery is a bit much in solo album form. Annoying skits as well. What a weird, terrible way to open an album with a distorted angry rant.
Cool co-labs and also beats from Dilla and Doom. Pretty good album overall a little long for me though.
Ok. Very long. Not my cuppa tea.
I couldn't finish it but I listened to a good 2/3rds of it and I can say it was pretty good. Wu Tang affiliates are good at what they do. The song with Nelly was surprisingly very good in my opinion and I should add it to a playlist lmao.
Very standard 2000’s rap album, few hits I enjoyed but nothing that excited me lmao
This album has me feeling a bit mixed. There are some incredible tracks that do a great job at sampling, showcasing the brilliance of his voice and are just polished. However, some of the tracks are just plain rubbish, like no soul and essence, and it just distracts from a great listening experience. I see the hype, but it could have been great.
Another rap album that can just go on and on and on because they don't actually have to construct any songs or concentrate on melody or bother about quality control. When it's good it's good and it's in the upper half of Rap for sure. Last (bonus) track may be the best on the album.
Confession time. I'm a 51 year old German dude from a small town, middle-class upbringing, I just don't know what to do with most of hip hop. The conscious, dusty jazz rap and trip hop adjacent stuff from the 90s, yes, but this? I do know who most of these people are or have heard their names before and I associate MF Doom with interesting beats, but it's somewhat hard to connect with it in any capacity. And, some tracks seem like 00s hip hop's actual music taking a turn for a more sweetly produced RnB infused sound that I care even less for. I've given a lot of 4s for rap albums, in my helplessness, but Fishscale here doesn't cut it.
idrk
I normally love Ghostface but this album didn't 100% do it for me, like it's good though I feel like his raps overstay their welcome a bit and don't really let the track or the listener breathe. It's like listening to the musical version of a run-on sentence.
It was alright. Some good moments. Too long though
I enjoyed this album fine, not my favorite rap album I’ve listened to but not my least favorite. I haven’t really listened to Wu Tang Clan but maybe I’ll have to check them out. This album is pretty graphic in its language and explicit sexual content but that kind of comes with the territory of rap/ hip hop music. I’m not sure if I would listen to this again if I’m being honest.
Some good tracks in there
This was ok, as these things go. Won't look it up again, but had worse recommendations here.
This was better than expected but still not my cup of tea
Not bad, not good. The samples generally feel a bit uninspired; the rapping is fine. Too many skits – ‘Heart Street Directions’ is particularly bad and pointless. Production collabs with MF Doom and Pete Rock and Dilla save this from being completely forgettable. There’s better Wu-Tang projects.
That's not my taste in music - But ok (cool)
The Soul-sampling production is nice without it ever feeling corny. Favourite Songs: The Champ, 9 Milli Bros, Back Like That. Least Favourite Songs: Beauty Jackson, Jellyfish.
not for me
Some ok rap. 3 stars
a lot of skits, I wanted more music
87/1001. Interesting. Starts up as a gangsta rap album with a very angry inside reporter from the drug scene, has soul / rnb love songs and skits about domestic violence and ends up with a very angry inside reporter from the drug scene. Wasn't boring to say the least, but as for me - the closest to a bar...was that ballet class? - I don't know if there is a place and time when and where this music would speak to me. Perhaps if and when I want to be evil.
I'm not very familiar with hip-hop but I always listen through albums from this genre to check how many songs I like. This album had some really good beats and rhythms, and it is very well produced and had some songs that flow together really well. I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics. It was too long which is usually my problem with hip hop albums. Overall it's a good album in the genre which I liked.
Not a fan of the skits. Enjoy the overall sound.
Was cool to learn a bit more abt Wu Tang. Back Like That was pretty cool song.
It's good, but it's not really my style. And although the songs have different vibes, it's much too long. 3 stars, but almost 4.
"Shakey Dog" is Ghostface Killah swinging on the first pitch of the game. It's aggressive, bombastic, and high-energy. He doesnt cut corners on forming a narrative on this song either; usually it's either super heady and moody OR screaming-in-the-booth hype rap - this song is both! "The Champ" a little later is kinda just the same song but less effective, unfortunately. It mustve been so cool to hear WTC in a completely different era on "9 Milli Bros". The novelty carries the song a little ways but not far enough for my ears. "Heart Street Direction" is so stupid that it almost loops around to being funny again - and was surely inspired by Eminem right? A bunch of sex innuendos formed into one skit/joke? Sounds like Eminem to me. "Whip You With a Strap" is such a beautiful reminder of J Dilla's sensibilities for making a beat and not overcomplicating it. He had an ear for samples like no one else. I'm a big fan of "Clipse of Doom" for how relentless the beat is with Ghostface keeping up too - more of those vibes that "Shakey Dog" had, I feel left wishing for more of this. What goes on in the last half of the album makes me wish the tracklist was put together with a bit more of a selective eye. Starts to all blend together. "Big Girl" into "Underwater" were super unique and almost reeled me all the way back in. Strong 3/5. Some great energy, fantastic personality and presence in the booth. Just wish for a bit more restraint on what got put on this album. the 10ish best tracks on here and nothing more wouldve been perfect.
"Bursting forth with some of the most pungent yarns, potent barbs, and peerless production of the Wu member's remarkably consistent career, Fishscale is the choice outcome of an endlessly creative mind using experience as a compass en route to triumph." -- Pitchfork https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/3637-fishscale/ I know it's good, I just personally don't like it.
There’s a few good tracks on here
3.5 A great album for sure, wondering why it isn’t one of his 90s albums which are usually considered his best, but whatever. GK has one of the greatest rap voices of all time, it just sounds right. Overlong as most rap albums of this era are, thankfully pretty light on skits. Amazing samples, pristine production. A great listen.
Shakey Dog grabs you! The beginning of the album feels like a journal from the street. The flow and rhythm—combining elements from ‘70s R&B—highlight the talent of Ghostface Killah. Kilo continues the groove and proto-documentary of street life. Somewhere around Beauty Jackson I started loosing interest. I think it was all the skits, which seem excessive here. RAGU tries to take it back with powerful lyrics and a slow beat, but then seems to feel long. In truth, I was listening to the extended version. Overall, it’s of mixed feelings. Culturally: not mine. Musically: respect. He deserves to be in the pantheon of rap.
Random thoughts: * I liked the samples and music feel. Very soulful. I haven't listened to much Wu-Tang or all the solo albums. * "Whip You With a Strap" really caught my attention. I'm not sure what he is saying or is just relaying his upbringing. Is he advocating for whipping kids? I'm not sure but it definitely was something. * "Kilo" was a funky jam and I nodded along to that one too. * Overall, pretty good!
Nobody does that 'flipping through early seventies radio/TV late at night' sampling like Wu-tang, and this is a very solid solo effort that perhaps lacks the mystery and crazy mythology of the very best of Wu, while bringing plenty of the gangsta chicks, guns and drugs stuff.
zwei bis drei
It was interesting to listen to this after listening to Straight Outta Compton 2-3 weeks ago. Although it felt reminiscent of that album at times, it felt more developed and much less self-parodical (naturally, having come out 18 years later).
Pretty good hip hop album, especially the beats and music. Ghostface is a pretty good MC just. Just doesn’t really have a lasting impact? And the topics are pretty generic and boring. Tricky to rate
aggressive clean old school, not bad
Sketch quantity aside, a fun album and great flow from Ghost - didn't expect to like it as much as I did
A bit of a slog at first, but got into it when I gave it a chance later in the day. Definitely asks for some focus to pay attention to the lyrics. All the diverse ft.s and production personnel really help for the variety, which is crucial. Some of the beats and samples are awesome (it felt like J Dilla was all over it but I guess he only did like one song). Hard to find credits for exactly who worked on each track, but the collaborative space is where any wu tang adjacent effort shines. And they seem to known it. Definitely made me appreciate Ghostface more, where he normally sat in the shadow of ODB, RZA, and Method in my mind. Fav tracks: Champ, 9 Milli, RAGU, Back like that, Dogs of War
Not my thing, but well constructed. Flowed well. Decent mowing music.
Not my favorite Wu-Tang-affiliated record, but it's fun enough.
Fishscale is nearly 15 years away from Wu Tang's golden years, and while I don't think this is essential from front to back, Ghostface Killah does prove that he sort of still has it. He has super dynamic flows, and really engaging story-telling across Fishscale. And the beats here have a lot of variety, with a few incredible selections, and a few that don't do it as much for me, but I think that the beats are much better than they aren't. While talking about the overall aesthetic here, this album is stuck in a weird place, in some ways it's stuck in the '90s, but there are some 2000s-isms, like a lot of the beats. The best instrumental showing here may be from J Dilla, who produced Whip You With A Strap. Ghostface is also in incredible form on this song, he pulls off vulnerability very well. Some of my other favorite beats here are on Shakey Dog, R.A.G.U., Dogs of War, and the end of Barbershop. These are also songs where Ghostface is pretty incredible too. I'd also like to mention 9 Milli Bros, which features a rare (and exciting) Wu Tang reunion. We also have a rare and similarly exciting Biggie feature on album closer Three Bricks. The biggest problem I have here is just the consistency. This album is over an hour long, and it isn't really a slog or anything, but it is certainly a little bloated. Some songs here are kinda whatever to me, and a lot of the skits don't do all that much for me. But the core is here, and Ghostface Killah makes himself heard, he's (more or less) still got it, we we get a pretty great album out of it.
Highlights: The Champ, 9 Milli Brothers, Kilo. In a nutshell: the gathering of the rap tsars. "We got a history, full of lightning victories/ Conceptual breakthrough/ it ain't no mystery/ Long vision, from giants in every way/ Rap czars, magnificent flows for every day/ From the east to the ville, from the west to the hills/Incredible rhymes, encouraging skill..." GZA, 9 Milli Bros Impressive rhymes and storytelling, expert flow, good use of samples...but there are skits, ugggggghhhh 🙄 At a staggering 64:01, it is a lot to take in for hip hop learners like me. Fellow Wu-Tang Clan mates GZA, SZA, Raekwon and Method Man have their own albums on the list too, so as to some or all are essential remains to be seen. Overall: 5/10
I remember vibing to this moderately. Not too intensely. 3.5
I will forever die on this hill. I love me some samples! I was surprised that this didn’t sound like a Wu Tang album minus that clan. Sure there are appearances but this is really Ghostfaces album. It serves its purpose. I’m not mad that this album is on the list. Choice cut: The Champ
It's no Ironman. Has it's great moments (Clipse of Doom, Dogs of War, and Three Bricks are certainly standouts) but for the most part it fails to really impress. Another victim of quantity over quality.
It’s ok
Liked the variety, but too long, no standalone bangers, too many n bombs, and bravado
The Good: An album for people who like symmetry! The Bad: That’s not why it’s called fishscale… The Ugly: Realizing that the album refers to some desease you get from oral sex… I just made that up… you can’t get a venereal desease from eating fishscales… I think. What fischscales refers to is a different musical scale, one that doesn’t stick to a set norm… one that allows people to sing so off key that it is considered an art-form! For those reading one of my reviews for the first time; I hate rap music… except, it seems, when it’s Em or any one related to WuTang… Don’t know what it is with Ghostface Killah, but he just makes me ignore my hatred for rap, and I will actually dish out a 3*...
Good
Each song is distinct, it's not a mushy bleed-together of left-overs to pad the length. But the production is consistent and each song obviously belongs on this album.
Good, but not my preferred hip hop/rap. 3/5
It was an okay album. I liked a few songs but it felt lacking without the rest of the gang.
More enjoyable than what I was expecting. Ghostface isn't super high on my Wu-Tang list, and I didn't love Supreme Clientele my first few listens. That being said, I enjoyed this from the storytelling perspective. Kinda like watching a Ghostface movie for an hour.
Its not bad. Too many skits... Lots of MF Doom beats but honestly they were better as instrumentals.
I’d never heard of Ghostface Killah before this challenge, I enjoyed the album
Nice
It's cool. Like the stories, but honestly nothing too crazy here.
I'm not a huge fan of rap but I really liked the beats and song composition. The guitar was a really interesting thing to add, it made the album really unique. Rating - 6.5
3/5
I like most of it if I don't listen to the lyrics too hard
3.3 stars rounded down.
There's a noticeable '90s sound combined with the sound of the 2000s. Decent album, not his best work though.
Didn’t rock like yesterday’s GZA did, so it suffered from being the second in a two-in-a-row Wu-Tang sequence. Still liked it, though. Maybe more into the Wu-tang universe than I thought.
Alright. Not offensive, not emotional. Fine
Not super my thing, but it was a decent listen.
I liked a few of the songs a lot and the whole thing was listenable. This style of rap isn't my favorite though.
I'm not really a fan of this genre at all, but I do enjoy this album. There's enough variety in styles to keep it interesting throughout. While I usually can’t stand the dumb skits that so many hip-hop albums include, most of them here actually serve the narrative pretty well. That said, Heart Street Directions is an exception—I'm all for lowbrow humor, but that track feels like the creative peak of a 13-year-old.
Have you ever thought “damn I really want a dozen skits in the album I’m about to listen to?” If so, this is for you. Unfortunately I’m not that person. Some of the in between songs were good, but I never feel as if the skits add to an album
Another Wu-Tang Clan member appears on the 1001 Albums list—there really are quite a few of them! I’ll admit, I tend to struggle with this genre; the gangster rap themes don’t particularly resonate with me, and with 27 tracks spanning 1 hour and 12 minutes, this is a long listen. Wish me luck. Fishscale has its moments. It leans heavily on collaborations—perhaps a bit too much at times—but those features often end up being the highlights. Tracks with Ne-Yo and Raekwon, for example, really stand out. The flow is smooth, the production is tight, and the lyrical delivery is sharp—even if the subject matter isn’t quite my thing. One thing that really surprised me was the number of writers credited on each track. It genuinely took an army to put this album together. Favourite track: I really enjoyed “Big Girl” and “Back Like That,” but if I had to pick one, I’d say “Back Like That” takes the top spot. Least favourite track: I actually felt the album improved as it went on. It started off a bit weak for me, and I didn’t enjoy the tracks that leaned heavily into gangster themes. Album artwork: That stare on the cover is intense—I feel like I’m being personally challenged just by looking at it!
Every other hip-hop fan seems to rate Wu Tang, but their stuff never really clicks for me. This album has a pretty solid sound. Production credits include Pete Rock and MF DOOM, as well as UK boom bap mainstay Lewis Parker. Some of these tracks have a killer sound. Ghostface has a fairly enjoyable flow, and I can see what people like about his cinematic, storytelling flow. However, if this were a piece of cinema, it would be 80% action sequences, with no attempt to really convey anything meaningful to the audience. Some of the tracks have an emotional depth in the lyrics, but lots of the songwriting is just a dull fantasy about being a drug dealing kingpin. Something about this style of mafioso rapping just never speaks to me - it doesn't give me anything to hold my attention. Having said that, there are a few great tracks here and the overall sound is solid. 3.5*
This slapped, but I would give it a better rating if it didn’t have all of the skits
was ok but went on way too long. could only get expanded edition on spotify and wish I could have at least had the original
Very inconsistent album. Some really great tracks woth fantastic mid-2000s beats and verse, but a lot of forgettable filler thay does bog the album down. More than a few hidden gems, but a lot of skippable songs. Top tracks: The Champ, R.A.G.U., Clipse of Doom
A bit heavy in a good way at times
Some solid hardcore rap from the 2000s. Didn't know a single one of these songs because I am guessing these could not be played on radio. Some of them hit for me and some did not. Still don't fully understand the appeal of every rap album it seems to have skits throughout the album. This is a high 3, not quite a 4
3rd of the solo albums by a Wu-Tang member that incorporates every member of Wu-Tang. For the Children. Love me some fishscale. Kilo is a measure. Portugal. The Man used to cover this at every show and it was incredible. 9 Milli Bros is pretty sick with all the Wu members. This one started pretty hot but went on too long and faded out for me. Ghostface does kill it though whenever I was super tuned in.
A quality album that is pushing the definitions of coarse and raw. Pretty much what you should expect from someone with such deep Wu Tang roots.
I would have given Supreme Clientele a 5 and maybe thinking about this in the context of that and all the other excellent Wu-Tang solo albums is a bit unfair. Some of the skits are over long, as was the style at the time, but the density of absolute bangers on this album is excellent.
Sometimes I'm unimpressed by the grandstanding in rap, sometimes I'm bored of the never ending womanizing and drug glorification, and sometimes I like it....I can't figure me out. I'll let you know in 200 more albums.
The production is fantastic (got some DOOM on here?) and Ghostface can rap. The album is a bit too long.
Now this was a classic, old school hip hop banger. Awesome storytelling, great flows and iconic singles. I can see why this is here. "Back Like That" might now be one of my favorite Hip-Hop songs ever.
I don't know why I dig Wu Tang more than other money drugs hoes rap, but, darn it, I just do.
2.94
WuTang!
I'm not a good judge of hip hop albums. This one is ok, some melodic elements I really enjoyed.
GFK rules
Mostly, it’s just kind of average. Nothing all that special. It’s frustrating. I keep waiting for it to kick off or something, but it’s just not getting there. There’s a lot of potential, but not much payoff.
I had only heard one song from this album before today. The rest of the album is pretty good too. I really like how it tells a story, it's always nice when the artist makes a cohesive story. I'm sure I will listen to this one again.
Too long, but great storytelling and mostly fun to listen to. Except the skits.
Not a fan of the genre but I like this album.
Decent
Good record. Skits were annoying, bit too long.
Enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, hate the skits so probably wont listen to the album again in its entirety
Enjoyed this but it’s a bit long
Sehr sehr solides album
i liked it but didn’t feel like anything special to me also….
Ganz nice aba toooo fucking horny
A solid 3 from me. I was listening to Brother Ali a bit at this time and I got a similar vibe from this. My hip-hop friend called this 'New York' and I can see that distinction. This didn't really impress me in any way but I would be happy to hear it again if someone put it on and might recognize some of it also.
The more I listen to music, the more I realize that the classic vinyl 40-minute format makes the most sense for compilation-style albums. I don't have anything against longer records, but I think that if the required time commitment exceeds 40-45 minutes, the album needs to justify it (like having an overarching narrative/some other sort of progression, or a lot of variety). An hour of standalone songs is just a bit too long for me. And it's not like the songs here are impressive. Don't get me wrong, they're pretty good overall, but aside from The Champ, none of them are all that memorable. I would rather artists make shorter releases but focus more on quality. And interludes... Don't, just don't. 7/10
Pretty, pretty cool all round. Killah has an excellent flow, and there's shades of Arrested Development or even De La Soul in the backing. There's a ceiling to the score, because this woke white kid doesn't like hearing the N word, even if it's being reclaimed in rap. But regardless, this is a fun and funky album.
Cons Overlong, skits, overly sweary. Pros Well produced. Sime of is more Kanye than Wu-Tang. Meh
album by wu tang band member Favorite track: Champ other picks: 9 million bros, be easy, momma
Känn mi gar nüd uus i däm Musig-Genre. Shakey Dog findi s beschte Lied. S ganze Album isch doch sehr kreativ.
I've liked most of the hip hop albums on this list so far, but this one was just okay. Too many skits (not a fan of those) and a lot of the songs were average. The Champ is a banger though, remember that one from WWE SvR 2007 video game.
Action Bronson definitely stole the guy's voice. I loved a couple songs but hated most of them. RAGU and Be Easy have such solid beats that you can say pretty much anything and it would sound good. That being said, I didn't care for Ghostface's flow in general. It felt like he said a lot without saying much somehow. It's a difficult one to rate for me.
has some bangers tbh
Listened to the edited version by choice instead. Didn’t care for the skits.
3.5*
Album wasn’t for me, but I can see how someone who is in to R’n’B would enjoy it. Not bad!
Hip hop continues to not really be my thing. But this was enjoyable for many tracks. The skits are all bad. It’s also WAY too long. However theres some good stuff here. 3/5
this is my kind of hip hop
Not sure Fishscale qualifies as an album that needs to be heard prior to one's expiring, but it's solid hip-hop.
Starting this album with "Shakey Dog" and "Kilo" is diabolical. The lyrics are incredible and the beats are outrageous. Throw in "The Champ" as the third song, and it's off and running. Unfortunately, these three set the tone for the album and it can't really keep the pace or recover. I lost interest pretty quickly. I hate hate hate the early aughts pattern of rappers throwing in unfunny skits in between songs...just give me the music. As much as I love Ghostface - probably in my top 2 or 3 of Wu-Tang, I'm a little unimpressed with this album as a whole. If the tracklist was moved around and the skits were dropped, it'd be a 4.....as it stands, 3.5 rounding down. Footnote: "Kilo" might have one of the greatest samples ever: https://youtu.be/XMOp7YXYqvc?si=9AYPQfdINDPYaO5W
Ghostface Killah's music can be quite challenging. Sometimes when I listen to it, I find it incredibly captivating, while other times I don’t enjoy it almost at all. There isn't much wrong with this album overall, but I wish there were more standout tracks. I feel that the skits are unnecessary almost by default. I would give this a 3, and it was likely the last time I listened to this.
Not really my thing but its ok. best bits are the samples and bits of old songs they nicked. all a bit misogynistic, gangsta and all about the cash which is very much not my vibe. sort of thing that 'cool' wanna be gansta's would make/listen to.
“‘Round the world today, the kilo is a measure, A kilo is one thousand grams - it’s easy to remember“ This is exactly the sort of wholesome educational content that the youth of America needs to hear more of.
It was alright but I didn't get into it enough for a higher score.
I kinda liked it, the skits were fun and the music was good but it didn't do a lot for me.
A kilo is a thousand grams, that’s easy to remember. “R.A.G.U” has a great beat, love the way it fades out at the end. “Whip You with a Strap” was too real. The last two songs are probably the best. Overall, I like hip-hop in general but the lyrics, I can not approve of.
Didn’t know of this album before, the cover made me expect an average album but it was better than I expected. Still not my cup of tea though.
A few cracking tracks on here amidst some mediocrity
Not a rap fan but this was ok
Propulsive beats assembled from infectious high energy soul/RnB samples. The vocals are top tier - it's rip roaring raps with an emphasis on storytelling verses, tight word-play, funny lines, and great images from an all star cast of Wu-Tang affiliates. Full of drama, vision, and powerful vignettes, but nothing super catchy in terms of memorable choruses/hooks - a bit overlong too, this is a prestige TV series of an album. Favorites: Shakey Dog, 9 Milli Brothers, Back Like That
This is #day147 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... this is how I learned that Ghostface Killah is a member of Wu-Tang Clan, a group I’ve never really listened to. I know Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and its place on this list, but somehow, it never was on my radar. My teenage hip-hop phase was more about Eminem, some 50 Cent, and a little Dr. Dre... I also enjoyed some alternative hip-hop like Fort Minor and still do. As for this album, it was kind of okay, but it felt too long, even for a rap record. Not sure it'll be something I revisit, though I can try to appreciate its place in the early '00s hip-hop context. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day148.
