Frantic, energetic and fun. This album makes you wanna party and drive fast cars

The Buzzcocks are smart and clean punk rock. This album shows them at the beginning, but in full stride.

This is slick - love the sound, more melodic punk than normal, even if their vocals sound like too much of a Johnny Rotten/Sex Pistols ripoff. Loved the tempo, loved the riffs. Brings you in right from the start with Fast Cars and No Reply and they close awesomely with Moving Away from the Pulsebeat (drums really prominent on this last one). The one thing these guys don't do is political lyrics - it's more cheeky relationship stuff. Maybe that's why they're considered pop punk as much as punk. I can see where the US pop punk scene built off this (thinking Offspring). But I like that scene and I can't get enough of this full sound. Sixteen, I Don't Mind, Fiction Romance, Autonomy - what a sequence to close out side A and usher in side B (other than the fact those last two have very similar sounding intros). A definite 4 but I'm going higher because I liked it more and more each time and these guys are pioneers.

5 out of 5. Really happy to see the Buzzcocks on here. Not as strong as, say, Singles Going Steady but I Don't Mind and Fast Cars are classics.

Short and English, like a lot of the best punk, with all the best Buzzcocks songs that no-one knows

Probably my favorite of the first wave UK punk crop. Smart, funny, fast as hell, and hooks for days. There will never be another Buzzcocks

This is just super fun and incredibly high energy. Short and sweet and I unexpectedly loved it

Listening to this, I realized that this is just about exactly what I want from a punk rock album. Still not my favorite genre, but this one rules. Favorite tracks: "Get On Our Own" and "I Don't Mind."

God I fucking love punk. Favorite track: Autonomy

I’m surprised by how good this is.

Buzzcocks are am underated band thats one of the best to ever to play punk. Not many have done it better even afterwards. This is a masterpiece of its genere. This was recorded in 1977. This sound was hard, fresh, raw and they did it first amd better.

Hell yeah.

I got into the Buzzcocks way late, but better late than never. Love this band. My kind of punk. 4.5 stars.

LOVE this band. Managed to catch them in concert a few years before Pete Shelley died. All those years after this album came out, they were still killing it onstage.

The best thing to come out of Bolton other than the Mighty Wanderers.

Prime punk

First time listener to Buzzcocks, and damn, this record is just fantastic. Love the production, the songs are so good. Not even got any favourites - just the entire record. Brilliant.

бодрый динамичный панк с простой радостью к жизни и желанием повеселиться в пабе барабаны довольно гипнотизируют тут и это прикольно Алкоальбом: пиво атомная прачечная (такая цитрусовая IPA с освежающим эффектом)

As another reviewer noted, despite the classic punk lyrics railing against society and manufactured music (disco in their eyes), the Buzzcocks sound like they're having a ton of fun. This music is driving, frenetic, and hits all the British punk hallmarks. Of course the instrumentation and progressions are simplistic, this is punk we're talking about. They have a knack for melody as well that borders on a pop sensibility. 'I Don't Mind' could have been made by mid-nineties pop punk bands and sounded perfectly in place.

"Another Music in a Different Kitchen" is the first studio album by English punk rock band Buzzcocks. This album had the third line-up on the band after the departure of the original lead vocalist Howard Devoto who was replaced on vocals by lead guitarist Pete Shelley. Besides Shelley, other band members included Steve Diggle (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Steve Garvey (bass) and John Maher (drums, percussion). The album was produced by Martin Reshent. The opener "Fast Cars" has to have a fast start and it does. Rhythm guitar and an echoing lead guitar. Shelley has that Johnny Rotten sneer down too. No one expected you to lead the album off with a song mentioning safety advocate Ralph Nader. The band rolls through some more melodic fast paced punk songs and closes Side A with "Sixteen." Machine-like militaristic guitars and drums. A hypnotic riff and beat. Of course, you end a side in chaos and with a song expressing hate on modern music. On Side B, the band really brings the melodic power pop punk. The only single "I Don't Mind" has a rockin' beat and catchy, melodic guitars. It's definitely the most pop song on the album. The protagonist has low self-esteem and is paranoid about losing his girlfriend since he's not worthy. A prevalent guitar leads "Autonomy." A nice up and down the scales, very catchy. He wants to be free from control. A drum intro begins the album closer "Moving Away from the Pulsebeat." A Bo Diddly guitar riff. A searing guitar solo on this seven-minute long song. Quite the finish. This album has fast, punk, melodic songs. Side A has the faster, more hardcore punk songs. Side B showcases their melodic, catchy side. I heard their influences especially thinking of Hüsker Dü. Their compilation album "Singles Going Steady" is probably the est place to start with this band but this album is also worthy of a listen with really no bad songs.

This album did not originally release with its singles, and it didn't need to. This is a strong and fucking awesome punk record. I'm sure any Brit who ever thoughr about starting a band was super inspired by this

This was a great album. Very punk, very 70’s!

When I was about 15 at school I went round to a friend's. We played bass and keyboards for a bit, then he showed me a dirt motorbike he had. As he was 14 all he could do was ride it round the garden. I had a music sheet book of Another Music In A Different Kitchen that was his, and never gave it back. Ebayed it for a healthy sum thirty years later. The album? By the band who were the first band I ever saw live. Just perfect. The sleeve, the title...everything that was exciting about music when I was 15. Still sounds amazing.

Such a great album, Buzzcocks don't get nearly the recognition that they should.

Fast and frantic punk rock with pop hooks and great lyrics.

Fast clever punk songs. Maybe the first 'pop' punk. A really fun and enjoyable listen.

I'm an unabashed fan of pop-punk. And I don't think you can be a pop-punk fan without at least appreciating that the Buzzcocks might have done it first. Good collection of fun and fast songs. And a lot more fun than the angry punk of the time (which I'm also a fan of!)

I’m genuinely trying to think of something negative to say about this album, and I’ve got nothing. This is everything that a Punk album should be: fast, furious, and funny. It’s not as political as other British Punk, but there’s something to be said about presenting the ordinary social lives of young people and how dissatisfying it is, as a companion to the more explicitly angry political commentary that The Clash of The Pistols were representing. Also, to clear up some confusion, the story about their name is that ‘cock’ is another way of saying ‘mate’ and there was apparently a headline in a music mag that the band read about the excitement of playing on stage titled ‘It’s the buzz, cock!’ Yes, it must’ve partially been picked because cock is an inherently funny word, but there is also a non filthy meaning behind it

A fine spiral scratch from a great band

I’m gonna be honest, I got a little confused when I saw this pop up. Name your band Buzzcocks, and you should expect me to be somewhat skeptical of what I’m about to listen to. But I’m always down for a little late 70’s punk music, so I set that initial skepticism aside. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this is a fantastic punk album. I haven’t listened to much music that is just straight punk rock, but the one big one I have heard is the Sex Pistols debut. And I was by no means blown away by that album. This, on the other hand, feels more punk than that album ever was. Mind you, this only came out a year after Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols. This is cleaner, more exciting, more interesting, and simply better punk music. Sex Pistols felt like they didn’t know what they wanted to be. They were trying to appeal to an audience they didn’t know how to appeal to. This group makes it clear what they intend for their album to sound like, and they do a damn fine job at it. This is written and formatted in the perfect way for a punk album. Short album, short track list, mostly short songs. It doesn’t feel bloated, and they don’t try their hands at any super experimental ideas, aside from one part at the end of Sixteen, but even that doesn’t feel out of place. They knew what they were capable of creating, and just stuck with it. Vocalist Pete Shelley has just the right amount of youth in his voice, and every riff hits. This really should have been the poster child for punk music moving forward. Rating: 9/10

# Playlist track - Fast Cars # Notes - Never heard of them before. - Top notch punk! - Really surprised with the tracks on the album having 30-50k plays on Spotify.

I was a teenager when this album was released and it spoke volumes to me. Outstanding album.

This bassist is incredible. Track 1 was a great starter track. Track 2 starts with a Pink Floyd Vibe with the phone ringing. AWESOME guitar riff. Track 3 has another awesome guitar part. Side B starts off strong lyrically. Great riffs. fun listen

Enjoyable, and I didn't even get as far as the killer tracks when listening yesterday.

Melodic punk verging into power pop. They do a lot with so little - just some power chords, dead-simple riffs, yelped out vocals, and a guy blasting away on drums at 2x speed. On some riffs the lead guitar has a fantastic chorus-pedal sounding tone - almost doubled up an octave giving a tiny bite of a brighter pop sound. The stripped back sound delivers a 36 minute dose of pure brash energy. These 70s punk albums sound so much less aggressive and in your face with nearly 50 years of hindsight - this is just old fashioned rock and roll played faster and through crappier more distorted amps. The genre of punk kind of just dissolve into post-punk, proto-punk, power pop, leaving basically just the Ramones and Sex Pistols. Favorites: I Need, I Don't Mind, Love Battery, No Reply

Power pop/punk perfection. Spent the afternoon with this on repeat, what more do you need

Ooo, an excellent 70's punk album! I'd heard of Buzzcocks but not really listened to much of their work, but I absolutely love this. It has that real loud, anti-establishment and anarchistic feel that punk is known for, but it feels so joyful at the same time, and you can tell that they had fun with this. An amazing record. i said i like punk

Super punky, a great big ball of angsty energy. I like!

A classic Buzzcocks album, writing credits for Shelley, Diggle and even a couple of Devoto / Shelley songs. Obviously 5 stars.

Completely satisfying album: it's got the punk, it's got the tunes, it's got sophistication. And I don't mind is simply irresistable.

Love it

High energy Brit punk. Personally I love it

What a set of songs. A thrilling slab of punk pop brilliance, showing that 'only' three chords could still be fun. Pretty much a perfect album from beginning to end: the lyrics, the melodies, the voice, the sound. Peerless.

Great energy, simple songs. "All you need is a mouthful..." -well said.

Nice change of pace

I'm a sucker for proto punk.

Honestly? Shockingly good Punk. I was not familiar with the group, but they will go into regular rotation!

With Buzzcocks beautiful blend of posi punk and British wit we get a truly fantastic debut. Creating a sound they'd later perfect and a brand that would last for over 4 decades. Their roots are here and those roots are checker boarded and ready to take the dance floor. As much a pop band as punk would get to that point.

5 Buzzcocks are definitely one of my favorite English punk bands. There’s something about the pace and production of this music that is almost addictive to listen to. This album has almost all of my favorites by Buzzcocks, too. This is the kind of album that reminds me of exactly why I love punk music.

Oh, yeah, this hits the spot. I saw the Buzzcocks at Selina's in early 1990. I though they were soooooo old (Pete Shelley was 34 at the time), but they really tore it up. They blasted out a blistering set of melodic punk with an energy level that 19 year old me found hard to keep up with. If I am going to listen to the Buzzcocks, I usually listen to the compilation Singles Going Steady, because the Buzzcocks had a great way with singles, so I am not familiar with this, their first full album (except Fast Cars and I Don't Mind). But, wow, all killer, no filler on this album. I love the energy, and there are some cracking tunes. This goes on my "must buy" list. The reissue version that I listened to had Orgasm Addict and What Do I Get as bonus tracks, which really pushed this in 5 star territory for me.

Good enough for John Peel good enough for me

It's Buzzcocks. What else can you ask for?!

Exactement mon genre, j'ai écouté deux fois de suite.

Of all the original punk bands, Buzzcocks wrote the absolute best singles, that's just a fact. Apart from the Damned's New Rose. So, none of those singles are included here because it's those days when you did that. There's still some great thrusting bangers here, but initially I was itching for the hits. Then side b kicks in and you know why they let the album stand on its own, fantastic. Will be giving it repeat listens.

Awesome raw British punk album. Will never get tired of their sound.

If you like punk, you must hear the Buzzcocks. More accomplished musicians than most of their punk peers, the Buzzcocks are pure energy.

I love 'cocks. I am very glad to see this album on the list, it generally seems to go a bit under the radar comparative to the other early punk classics. It's probably my second favourite album of the first 1977/1978 wave (since you are asking, the first is always going to be The Clash by The mortherfucking Clash).

love these guys - and i double love that fast cars sets out to fool you into thinking it's actually boredom. but it's not - it's a LIE! it's a big, punk-rock LIE - HA! ...also, moving away from the pulsebeat is a fantastic jam.

I liked this much more than I remembered. I didn't like it much the first time I heard it and I always thought Love Bites and Singles Going Steady were much better. I still do, but I revisited this album and it turns out it's actually great too.

The thing I love about Buzzcocks is that they actually kind of gave a shit about what they were making punk songs about. Their sarcastic tone comes across loud and clear, and their songs are much more musically complex than their contemporaries while being just as fast and aggressive. Going into this album, it was already one of my all time favorite punk albums, so it's a five in my book. I also love that the tracks lead into each other, which is a really weird thing for a punk band to do as that was more of a high production/progressive rock kind of thing to do. Buzzcocks were way ahead of the curve. Orgasm Addict has always been kind of an underrated classic. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15.

Never heard of this album before. Really interesting and good listen

Interessante sound! Herkenbare punk, maar enkele originele insteken in sommige nummers. Ik vond dit een erg aangename verrassing!

needs more listening - angry first album

loud, punk. Quick and fun.

I LOVE old British punk, so this was right up my alley.

TAs South Lawn - James, Jackie, Helen, Andy, and crew all times

Sex pistols ish

The more I listened to this album the more I enjoyed it. It could be the soundtrack to a John Waters film.

Like that they're a punk band singing about a fair bit of romance not just anger and teenage angst

Just a good British punk rock album. If you like the Sex Pistols, you'll like this. If it's just loud angsty noise to you, then you won't. I thought it was pretty great.

Way poppier than I expect punk to be, but still good. Fast Cars, Autonomy and Moving Away From The Pulsebeat are the highlights.

Greate energy!

I’m rounding up to a 4 because I love Buzzcocks. They are a rare occasion on which I wish compilations were allowed in the 1001 because ‘Singles Going Steady” is 5* afaic. This debut has all the things we’re familiar with; energy, speed, melody and personality. The songs on average just don’t match up to those singles (and their b-sides). It’s far from bad, but I always find myself wanting a bit more from their studio albums.

Probably my fave of the straight-up punk bands, probs just cos they had that slightly fruity edge (shout out bi icon Pete Shelley!). This is a bit cruder and more basic and quite repetitive than the really really good stuff that came later but tbh I just have a massive soft spot for the Buzzcocks. And look how young they look on the cover!! (apart from the guy at the front who looks about 18 and 45 at the same time somehow).

Ha! That name.

he dasch fun! sie sind poppige punk i like this. letste sing huuuere groovy, ich mösts nomel ufmerksamer lose aber s macht huere spass.

Love this, pure punk energy. I'm surprised not to hear more of the hits I recognise though.

The Buzzcocks are awesome. I kind of think of them as a British version of the The Ramones. Not a knock off, just a contemporary. Though I find their singles album a five, this one is impressive.

es como si the kinks hubieran empezado a hacer musica en el contexto musical de Inglaterra a finales de los 70s y me encanta el resultado un punk muy pop o un britpop muy punk

Pete Shelley might be the GOAT punk guitarist

One of those albums which remind me why I am doing this. Glad to have found this. Get On Our Own and Autonomy are bangers.

I actually quite enjoyed this

I punked myself

An enjoyable 70s punk album

Short, snappy and fun.

I think they may work a bit better as a singles band, but this is still pretty good. Not really stand out tracks, but nothing bad and everything pretty good. Just a well made album.

I'm a big fan of the Buzzcocks, but my favorite albums (songs) by them came out in the fall of 1979 (about 18 months after this one): "A Different Kind of Tension," and the singles compilation, "Singles Going Steady." (I'll be surprised -- and disappointed -- if that album doesn't show up here, at some point.) This album, from March 1978, is more simple/basic punk pop (pop punk? power pop?). Still pretty good, though. I think I'll go with a (low?) 4. Favorite tracks, which hints at better things to come, are "I Don't Mind," and "Autonomy." Buzzcocks to me are better than a lot of their punk band peers, because (while still keeping the back-to-basics simplicity and ferocity) they didn't discard melody/tunefulness/musicality.

These cocks be cooking - seriously, that's all I got. I'm not in the fuckin' mood to write an essay at 12:05 that's if you don't MINDDD IND IND IND INDDDDD (8/10, 4/5 on this scale)

This was right up my alleyway for music! Great aggressive sound throughout. The only thing I had an issue with was the singer’s delivery.

Gave this a few runs to let it settle in and it’s a solid punk rock album. Some fun hooks, good energy. 4 stars

Man…what a disservice that “Ever Fallen in Love” eclipsed anything else by them. Never woulda given them a chance, but this is maybe my favorite UK punk album? I’d have to look at a list. This is so listenable. A review on here said “it’s FictionAL Romance, not Fiction Romance” and that got a good chuckle out of me.

I love the Buzzcocks, this is not their best album, but it's fun. It's loud and fast.

In and out weigh and fast, I dig it

Buzzcocks have that magical combination of melodic and hooky songs with gritty punk energy.

Pretty great old school punk. Not my favorite but I can't fault it much. The vocalist isn't totally for me. Mind the Buzzcocks, they're perfectly fine. Funny enough, "I Don't Mind" is probably the best song. "Fiction Romance" is pretty good too. In fact, I'd say this album gets a good deal better as it goes on. The last several songs are great.

pretty good actually

Great great record. A blast of clean power pop joy

Like their first EP and their big singles but don't think I'd listened to this album before. Enjoyed.

Good classic punk

really surprised me, i loved it

Enjoyable punk. 4/5

Ah, old school punk today. A refreshing change from recent albums. The Buzzcocks debut, Another Music in a Different Kitchen. All the classic punk elements are exhibited on this record. Fast, high energy guitar riffs (two guitars in this case) over pounding drums. Subversive lyrics. Punk is music that is about attitude and energy. It is supposed to be noisy. All of that is on display in spades here, but we also get more musical complexity to this music than many of their contemporary punk bands. We also get more melodic pop hooks, making this record among the first, if not the first, pop-punk albums. The Buzzcocks were among the first wave of punk bands. Their incorporation of pop elements made them somewhat more accessible and probably more influential to later acts. This music shares more elements with other genres, making it easier to adapt. Important only because part of the fun of this project, for me at least, is hearing the evolution of modern music. It was a riot listening to Another Music again. It has been years since I put on a Buzzcocks album. Not because I don’t love their music. I do. I just don’t have as much angst in my 50s as I did when I was a teenager. Shocking, I know.

Fun album. Hadn't heard most of it. Never knew if they were kind of a joke band, questions still remain. Good playing though. 4/5

They really set the framework for pop punk. All of their 70s stuff is a blast to listen to. The album really picks up steam as it goes. Only thing keeping this from a five star is some songs on the first half that I thought were just alright. Their Spiral Scratch EP is still the most important thing they did. Rating: 4.3

8.5/10 Great punk rock record, I really like the energy, it's catchy and fun.

This was kind of better, or at least reactivated my enjoyment of the Buzzcocks. They are also a staple sort of band that I would say really toes the line between true punk and post-punk. I don't know why I don't have any of their old albums laying around but there it is... Yeah, this is a really cool band actually, in so long as the genre is suitable it is well worth the listen, maybe even a look around the old record store!

Relentlessly energetic and some great songs, mainly when they switched things up a bit and moved away from the formula.

I like the Buzzcocks, but have never listened to this album. It is not their best album but a lot of fun nevertheless. Some great Punk Rock Classics on here.

i really like this

Generic but good punk.

As one half of the most successful duo in history, Houmous & Chutney, I have to say, this is great. 4.4 5/15 Love Battery

If you can get over their voices, it's what if the Ramones didn't have the same song over and over again. It's so rocking. But they are so annoying to listen to.

this was pretty cool

Punk fun

Chainsaw guitars and a garage mix. Hooks galore. Amazing pop punk

el meme de los spidermans señalándose con el intro de autonomy y el de run to the hills de maiden

Proper grassroots punk this

So freakin good. I feel like the Sex Pistols get all the credit for being the punkiest British punk band, but the Buzzocks never died. This band was around forever and made really freaking cool music. I love how this record starts and ends. Its fast, chugging, oi punk. 70s punk is maybe my favorite. Sure, it all sounds basically the same, but the spirit is the most pure during this period. I had a blast with this one. I could have it on all day.

The Buzzcocks are great. Punk with a power pop bend—what's not to love? Really, their album that should be on this list is Singles Going Steady, but it doesn't meet the criteria on a technicality (it's a compilation, a collection of all the singles and B-sides they'd released). This is a solid substitute, and showcases a lot of what makes The Buzzcocks great, but doesn't contain some of their greatest, most iconic songs, like "Ever Fallen In Love." So, while Singles Going Steady would get a 5 from me, Another Music In A Different Kitchen just doesn't appeal to me quite as much. Still great, and I encourage anyone reading to listen to Singles Going Steady if you enjoyed this!

I mainly only knew The Buzzcocks from 'Ever Fallen in Love', which is an incredible punk song. As an album it's good, clearly trying to follow in the footsteps of the Sex Pistols from some straightforward, energetic, and slightly abrasive punk. I can't say it's particularly unique, but it's a good album. And I really enjoyed the idea of a 70s punk band from Manchester singing about Ralph Nader.

What can I say, I love a British punk band debut album.

That era of punk/post punk/alternative is really great. Listening to this you could hear the past (Ramones/Clash), the present (Dead Kennedys/Black Flag) and the future (Dead Milkmen/Fugazi) and even some pop influences. Just right on the edge of being great and the edge of being total crap. I love it for this! 4.

The lyrics were sometimes repetitive, but it was still a great example of good music from the genre as a whole. The drumming and solos were very good.

Is it a musical masterpiece? Definitely not. Is it fun af though? Hell yeah it is.

Solid. I always thought early Buzzcocks sounded a bit like the Sex Pistols but with better musicians.

Now thats good eatin. Not a ton to say other than its just a rock solid earlier punk record. Just good song after good song. Great speed. Great vocals. Just a hell of a lot of fun. I will say I listened to a deluxe version and the bonus songs were maybe my favorite ones, orgasm addict and what do I get. But the core songs are also very good. Tons of saves. Ive always knew i liked newer buzzcock stuff but I never gave em a shot. Good thing this site made me. Thanks. Great record from real

Solid early punk. The genre has come a long way since then but it’s still good for what it is.

A pleasure to listen to !!

my type of music right there

Fun, sardonic punk rock.

Another Music in a Different Kitchen (1978) is the debut studio album by the Buzzcocks. I don’t know if the album generator is entirely random or whether this was purposely selected as the antidote to yesterday’s sombre offering of Nick Cave & The Bad Seed’s The Boatman’s Call. Another Music in a Different Kitchen follows my rule of keeping albums short and to the point at eleven songs in just over 36 minutes. Seven of the songs are under three minutes (including all of side A except ‘Sixteen’). Although the Buzzcocks are certainly a punk band in terms of energy and attitude Pete Shelley’s song writing produced what Alexis Petridis described as “compact, perfectly constructed pop songs” and rather embodying the aggressiveness of punk Pete’s delivery was softer and a lot more vulnerable. The best song on this album is the single ‘I don’t mind’, which in keeping with a lot of Shelley’s writing is a melodic jaunt through the confusion and frustrations of (quite often unrequited) love. There’s an ambiguity in Shelley’s writing that allows people of any gender, any sexuality to relate to the universal feelings he’s expressing. “Reality's a dream (O-o-o-ooh) A game in which I seem to never find out just what I am I don't know if I'm an actor or ham, a shaman or sham But if you don't mi-i-i-i-i-i-ind, I don't mi-i-i-i-i-i-ind” I should say that despite how much I like the Buzzcocks, the only record by them that I own is their 1979 single ‘Everybody’s Happy Nowadays’ which for some reason resonated with me as an eight year old! I think it was the pounding guitar and the Nihilistic refrain “Life’s an illusion, love is a dream.” I did own a copy of their Singles Going Steady compilation but I seem to have lost it somewhere along the way. Another band to add to my wish list! Side A: 1. Fast Cars - 3/5 2. No Reply - 3/5 3. You Tear Me Up - 3/5; 4. Get On Our Own - 3/5 5. Love Battery - 3/5 6. Sixteen - 4/5 Side B: 1. I Don’t Mind - 5/5 2. Fiction Romance - 4/5 3. Autonomy - 4/5; 4. I Need - 3/5 5. Moving Away From the Pulsebeat - 4/5

Pretty rad

Rocks so hard. I’m upset I never listened to it before.

it's pretty solid I've never really listened to them for some reason Will I listen to again: 81%

Really enjoyed this punk sound. Well produced and fun.

I think that I've only ever listened to Singles Going Steady so this is a really fun early punk album. These guys are a riot. Fast Cars is more relevant than ever and I love the Ralph Nader shout out.

Great early punk album. Fav: Autonomy

Pretty solid

It feels like a very direct blueprint for punk. It’s fast, sharp, and stripped down, but the riffs and melodies are still clear. It doesn’t feel chaotic for the sake of it — it feels focused. I Don’t Mind and Fiction Romance might be my favorites. They’re simple, but the hooks are strong and emotionally direct without being dramatic. Moving Away from the Pulsebeat is interesting too. It runs over seven minutes, which sounds unusual for punk, but it still feels completely punk.

Zo Engels I love it. Er zit echt een vrolijkheid in dit soort punk en daar ben ik erg voor!

my cock is buzzing my buzz is cocking etc

This is pretty good generic English punk rock/pop punk. I enjoyed it, and I'd probably listen to it again, though I'm not going to go seeking it out.

Buzzcocks are cool and this album is good! Must-listen #29

This album is clever and enjoyable. The production is clean and sounds great, the guitar riffs are awesome, and the lyric writing is great. "Fiction Romance" is my favorite track, but I also enjoyed "Get On Our Own," "I Need," and "Moving Away from the Pulsebeat."

Pop punk, changed brit pop Get on your own Id don't mind

This is great punk. One of the best punk albums ever made.

This is #day553 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to some good ol' late '70s British post-punk. This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day554.

having punk 2 days in a row makes me want another punk album also surprised this band is still going in 2026. good on them. at the end of the album it left me wanting more from them it also makes me want some Anarchy.

A really good album if you like english Punk music!

Their first studio album. Punk. Punchy, smart and uplifting energy. Good, solid Punk riffs and overall a fun album. It has the energy and not the gritty lyrics of other 70s UK Punk albums, which in this case is a good thing. The album does exactly what it says on the tin. I also liked the unusual ending for a Punk album.

good stuff 4/5

Is that the riff from 'Boredom' at the start? *checks wiki* ah, yes, I see. A pretty great punk lp. Reissue version adds Orgasm Addict and What Do I Get, which pumps it up to a 4. Some great, catchy songs, rough but still melodic, snappy and bratty with some clever lyrics. Not as mindblowing as Spiral Scratch, but a valid appearance.

Short, punchy 70’s punk rock holds a special place in my heart and the Buzzcocks are high on that list. To me, Singles Going Steady is the more definitive listen of theirs, but I understand that a proper album is better for this list than a compilation.

Yes, it's punk. It's really fun to listen to now and then. It won't be my favorite in this genre, but it's funny. I might listen to it again. 4/5

Exceedingly excellent!

One of the great Punk debuts. Fuses fast guitars with melody and pop sensibilities.

Enjoyed this, punchy, short and catchy punk songs with some decent guitar riffs. I'd only ever heard "Ever Fallen In Love With Someone" before so was good to hear some more from this band

Buzzcocks – Another Music in a Different Kitchen Another Music in a Different Kitchen is a high-velocity "body of work" that delivers a perfect surge of "grungy" punk energy. It thrives on a raw, high-testosterone vibe that is ideal for focused listening, yet it avoids being "unidimensional" through its sharp songwriting and technical "interplay." Standout tracks like "Autonomy" and "I Don’t Mind" showcase an "immaculate" balance of speed and melody, while the atmospheric drive of "Moving Away from the Pulsebeat" adds a layer of depth often missing from the genre. It’s a powerful, high-energy experience that revitalizes the listener, proving that punk can be both "gritty" and technically sophisticated. A solid 4/5 that keeps the momentum of Month One hitting hard.

I love the buzzcocks, this was good fun, lots of energy. I feel like it was missing the killer tracks though, if it had orgasm addict on it, or what do I get on it, it would have really elevated it. Still enjoyable, but a shame. Some of the lyrics feel a bit childish, maybe naive, but the music is fun so I didn't mind too much.

Glad they did what they did!

I’m kinda torn. You have to listen to Buzzcocks before you die. They’re such a perfect band. The first band to perfect the melodic poppy punk sound. Aggressive and melodic. So great. Thing is their best record is Singles Going Steady. Technically a compilation but most of their singles are non album tracks. This album is a good example of their sound but not the best one. Let’s do four stars.

stabil, ein bisschen einseitig

Schöner Punkrock!

I like it

Fand ich gut

The final track is really cool reminds me of Adam and the ants… before adam and the ants. The rest is solid punk

I like the Buzzcocks, but I think the recording here isn't good. The songs feel a bit distant and lacking the punch that they should have. The songs themselves are good, but it's just a shame that the dynamics in the songs don't come through.

It's loud enough that I think the music might be coming from this kitchen...

Knew some songs, ready to ice it a three star rating... then Moving away from the pulse came in and elevated this album for me to a four. Damn that song is brilliant.

Crazy how well-formed this is for a debut.

Ha spaccato! Non me lo aspettavo

I thought this was pretty cool. This band actually played in my city recently and I'm kinda bummed I missed them. It's pretty british punk standard but not the grating, whiny, annoying style as much as some others. Would listen again.

Haven't really listened to much buzzcocks but they are very much proto garage rock of the type I'm very keen on. Knew I don't mind from an Ash cover for example. Wasn't so stand out that it blew me away but I'd happily listen again.

3.7/5 B

Fast Cars 3.6 No Reply 3.4 You Tear Me Up 3.5 Get on Our Own 3.5 Love Battery 3.3 Sixteen 3.4 I Don't Mind 3.6 Fiction Romance 3.8 Autonomy 4 I Need 3.7 Moving Away from the Pulsebeat 3.5 Score: 3.57

Definitely on the more accessible side of punk. Some of these tunes are verging on pop but with a lovely, rich, punchy, distorted guitar sound backing them up. Hooks are pretty consistently catchy. Vocals are decent for a punk band, the snarling is there but without going over the top. Does suffer a bit from that punk issue of the songs beginning to sound very similar by the end of the record and i dont know if i would rush to spin again. However, it was a reasonable listen. No one favourite track. 7/10

Classic old school punk, can't go wrong

punk van toen punk nog punk was...

громковато мощновато

Great riffs and melodies. I thought the lyrics were pretty good. John Maher’s drumming is really good throughout the album. I did think it’s a bit odd how there are these more avant-garde moments but there are so few of them, it feels like they didn’t fully commit. 4/5

Buzzcocky!

This was awesome. I came to punk just after this early era, with Bad Religion being my entry point. I can hear so many influences on my favorite bands in this album. Riff-based punk that is still musical and joyful? Yes, please.

Non male dai

Almost as good as it gets for punk music, especially so early in the genre's trajectory. This is right on the boundary between 3 and 4 stars for me, but I'm in a good mood, so what the hell.

Fantastic stuff.

Pretty enjoyable punk album. The thing I'm appreciating about punk albums from this list is they very rarely outstay their welcome. Less is more.

Ich würde gerne eine 5 geben, aber den Vocals fehlt etwas

This is really great. The instrumentals all rock and the melodies and lyrics are good too. Pretty straightforward British punk done really well and there’s nothing wrong with that. Favorite songs were Fast Cars, Get On Our Own, I Don’t Mind, and Fiction Romance.

Another 'Singles Going Steady' fan here. However, I knew all of the tracks on this as well. Quick, quirky, fun, memorable, every track. A unique band and a solid recommendation for the collection.

Very good

Some good old punk fun

mamãe quero ser contracultura

Having already seen immense turnover before making their first record, Buzzcocks look to settle down and plant roots with Another Music in a Different Kitchen, yet they still found a way to be as snarky and slippery as possible. Squaring their music into a round shape to the best of their ability, they provide yet another entry into an increasingly intelligent sector of what had now become a tired, played out movement. One wonders what the other kitchens were lacking in contrast to this particular kitchen... Favorites: Fast Cars, No Reply, You Tear Me Up, Love Battery, I Don't Mind, Fiction Romance, Autonomy, Moving Away From the Pulsebeat.

Excellent stuff

In 1978 I was just beginning to explore rock music aside from just the radio hits, but punk was too "scary" for me at that point. When I was in college in the early to mid 80's I dabbled into it, but post-punk and the American indie scene was starting and that was where my interests went. This project has brought a bunch of the original British punk bands more to my awareness, and I've enjoyed all of them. Looking back, I didn't need to be so scared and I likely would've loved listening to this in the suburbs and being more than just my quietly rebellious self. I look forward to listening to more in the project, but I will do my own exploration as well.

"Fast Cars"... opens this record... it is like the quintessential punk rock song... fast... loud... and cool... if you liked The Sex Pistols.... you should LOVE these guys... very similar to my ear... i was just a bit young to be involved in the punk rock scene of The Pistols and The Buzzcocks... they sound very, very similar... Johnny Rotten has a way with a punk vocal... but so does Pete Shelley (RIP)... every song on this record is a fine example of the punk rock genre... eventually The Clash would break through over here... i mean, a little more than The Pistols and 'Cocks... to my ear... and my taste... if a punk rock record even comes close to a melody... counts double... and all three bands mentioned do that... back to this particular record... hey... if you LOVE punk and the era... this album is a NO BRAINER Five Stars... i would give it that... but, when put up against "Kind of Blue" and "Dark Side of the Moon"... how can i? so... Four Stars..."

Kids being punk in a way that feels fun rather than disgusting.

Fuck yes

Lovely but but of rock and roll.

Rocking album. Had never heard of these guys before.

The Buzzcocks are one of my favourite punk bands. Musically it’s more interesting than most punk and I love Pete Shelley’s voice. This record also has a ton of great hooks. I Don’t Mind sounds like it could have been written by The Who.

This record goes. I like.

Real good album. I love me some Buzzcocks, though I don't think I've ever listened to an album of theirs start to finish. But now I want more. 4/5

Fun album that I didn't know. I had a good time with this one, for sure. 3.75/5

4.3 понравилось не все есть минусы но это крутой альбом

Knew a few Buzzcocks songs before listening to the album, but not many. Really enjoyed this album and can hear how many bands I grew up listening to that formed in the late 80s/early 90s were clearly influenced by this record. Selected "Get On Our Own" and "Autonomy" for the playlist.

This album is somewhat the missing link between postpunk and pop punk . And I think that's what I like about this album. I don't think all of it works 100% but overall I really love the general feeling of the album and can see myself returning to it from time to time. (8.1) ★★★★

Don't like his voice, but quite cool for its genre. Low 4

I really enjoyed this album. The Buzzcocks really pioneered the idea of pop punk, and every song on this album is super catchy with cool punky guitar riffs. Pete Shelley was the man. Highlights for me are "Fast Cars", "Love Battery", "Sixteen", "I Don't Mind", and "Autonomy". 4.5 stars.

Feels a bit different to punk in the traditional fashion with the vocals and the sound of the album. It still has the fast riffs and kind of pulsating drums punk usually has but it sounds more fun in a way rather than aggressive and angry. The vocalist also makes it sound a but posh sometimes which culminates in a differing punk album to something like the clash or Ramones. I enjoyed quite a bit though and I thought the way the drums and distorted guitar riffs came together like a marching band almost was great, definitely a good, somewhat ahead of its time punk album (felt a bit 80’s in some ways). Favourites: Fast cars, get out on our own, I don’t mind, fiction romance and autonomy. Overall, 7/10.

7.8/10 surprised how much i liked this album. definitely not my typical genre, but i loved another album of theirs, so maybe i shouldn’t be so surprised. they have such a unique sound to me, in vocals and in lyrics. always a fun time. loved this

Very good, most of the tracks would stand out on any other album. Will keep coming back to listent tho this for sure 4/5

Overall: 7/10 Pretty good album from the early stages of punk. There's a ton of energy and the album feels relatively fun and positive. The vocals are kind of hit or miss for me, but it's a great voice for this type of music. The songs can get a bit repetitive but it's punk so that's not entirely a bad thing. I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to know where a lot of their favourite bands got their sound. Fav Song: Moving Away from the Pulsebeat

forse ascoltare tutte le canzoni dell’album di fila è un po’ pesante, però i singoli pezzi sono top ☄️☄️ canzone preferita credo: get on our own non so per quale collegamento mentale l’album mi ha fatto pensare a the end of the fucking world

Un classico album punk rock. Energico, veloce e autentico, in un Inghilterra in cui il punk come movimento stava esplodendo. Approvato

That’s good punk!

Love it

Buzzin’

A really good album, I liked Fast Cars, I Don't Mind and Fiction Romance the most.

This album is straight-up 70s punk, no question about it. Fifteen songs in 44 minutes, and not a second wasted. It’s fast, raw, and carries that restless energy that defined the era. The Buzzcocks keep everything tight and punchy, with just enough melody tucked into the chaos to make the tracks memorable. It’s not as polished as later punk-inspired albums, but that’s part of its charm. You can feel the urgency and attitude in every riff and shout. It might not reach the iconic status of Never Mind the Bollocks, but it holds its own as a pure punk statement. Loud, scrappy, and over before you even know it, which is exactly how it should be. Favorite song: Orgasm Addict

Fast Cars - 4/5 No Reply - 4/5 You Tear Me Up - 3/5 Get on Our Own - 5/5 Love Battery - 5/5 Sixteen - 2/5 I Don't Mind - 5/5 Fiction Romance - 4/5 Autonomy - 5/5 I Need - 5/5 Moving Away From the Pulsebeat - 4/5 Average score: 4.2/5

Favorite tracks: Get On Our Own, I Don't Mind Love the energy of 70s punk, but listening to recordings always falls a bit flat. I'm sure seeing these guys at a show would have been killer!

I do the love Buzzcocks. This is a little rougher than their later stuff yet so perfect as power pop

if god is real, please PLEASE put this review above some old fuck complaining about how they don’t understand punk music

Fun early punk

It's hard to believe this was 1978. Such an 80s punk sound, must've been one of the OG's. Perfect for a Friday afternoon of work.

I wanted to shit on this because it’s another UK band and I’m sick of those but this was surprisingly awesome. Loud, fast, rocking. Everything I love

Classic. I like Pete’s voice

This actually makes punk rock sound good, which is a very hard thing to do

Got a jolt of excitement when one of the Singles Going Steady tracks kicked in. Not as consistently good as that but still an enjoyable listen.

First wave punkrock. Lands good at this airport.

making me move but the album isn’t unique

The Buzzcooks

this was a fun, energetic, and cool album! way better than some less engaging early punk like the stooges or germs. though knowing london calling is coming out the following year, this kinda looks like the unpolished first draft of what punk will become. also the 7+ minute final track is weird and bad?? not sure how that ended up here or why it feels so different than the rest of the album. maybe it's because i can't think of a single other 7 minute punk song, because that is just a Wrong Thing. the rest of the album is still cool though, fuck da h8rs. favorites: fast cars, you tear me up, love battery, sixteen, i don't mind

This is tough to rate. It's a really solid album. I was tempted to give it only three stars, but I found myself enjoying it more as it went on. The closing track lifts it to four stars through its novelty, and because it chugs along so very nicely all the way through.

Great album

Pretty good.

Very sex pistols.

A perfectly serviceable foray into punk, bursting with energy making for a fun listen. It is a distinctive brand of instrumental aggression that is engaging but perhaps not enough to stand out from talented peers

very much enjoyed, albeit having very similar sounding tracks i still quite liked the listen through

Delightful. I was literally shitting myself when this was released. Because I was a baby. Speaking of diapers, the band’s Singles Going Steady might be the more deserving release (which is hopefully also on this list).

Buzzcocks are great and so is this. Yay!

All I’ve ever heard from the band is Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) and to be honest I always thought they had just been a one hit wonder. I really enjoyed this one, on the first listen it took a couple of songs to get into it but second time around I liked pretty much everything on it. In saying that while I liked everything it needed a couple more stand out songs to get full marks. Top Track - I Don’t Mind

Blisteringly fast first half and slower more groovy second - and ending with a hidden track and Shepard Tone?!

Great last two song ending

I was hoping this would have one of the two songs of theirs I really like, Ever Fallen in Love or What Do I Get. Not that the songs here are bad, I quite like this type of music. Even the singer's annoying voice doesn't annoy me too much. It's just missing that one big punch. I will listen to it again though. I can see it growing on me more.

Good fun pop punk.

Decent music

More dumb, fun punk? I’ll take it, thanks.

Delightfully immature.

This is hella good punk. I was sick today when I listened to it and the snarl made me happy for a bit.

Thoroughly enjoyable. Worked well at the gym.

Rash, rushed but absolutely fantastic. Aggressive but not overpowering

Would have been an incredible mosh pit

Sooo many bangers but had never listened to this start to finish.

The album opens up with an anti car message. It's great.

Mmmm, I like the rawness and anger in it, but then not sure how special it is. Bonus points for an anti-car song.

Great stuff. No notes.

I liked this album quite a bit, but nothing really stands out. It is missing the songs that hook you that the Clash had or the overt "Fuck You!" attitude of the Sex Pistols to take it to the next level. The Buzzcocks are definitely an influential group, this is a good album, and this is some great 70's punk music.

One of my favorites of the Brit punk bands, I'll take them over the Sex Pistols any day. Raw, hooky, and energetic...no need for coffee listening to this

Wasn’t expecting anything of this - dismissed them as a two-hit-wonder by wow. What an album!

Precursor to all your favorite 90s grunge which hits hard.

Pretty rough at first, but once the beat takes over, it's all good. 3.5/5

Love the buzzcocks

Ehrlich, geradlinig, ohne Schnickschnack - vieles richtig gemacht!

God, this album is so close to getting me absolutely enthralled with Buzzcocks. Almost the entirety of the A-side, in my opinion, is a great mix of punk and a proper energy that doesn't get repetitive. Oddly, the riffs remind me of post-hardcore and the feeling that gives me, so I really thought from the beginning up to the start of the B-side that I would love this album, but while it is still superb, the final four tracks leave a fair bit to be desired. They slow the pace down, but don't make up for it melodically, even though the faster paced tracks were able to have some great hooks, and it is a bit disappointing. Fiction Romance is solid but doesn't stick the landing, and Autonomy is RIGHT THERE, but also falls flat. The rest of the album is so good, but I was a bit burnt by it, and so it dropped a couple notches for me. However, this is still one of the best pop punk albums I've ever heard, and I know something here will grab be upon re-listen to the point where I could see myself really liking it. For now, it's just good, and y'know what? That's okay.

liam is this power pop or just punk? anyway i liked it. it got me going. revved me up as i drove at full speed through the easter traffic in front of st stephen's (all crossing guards are bastards). i felt like it was pretty much the same sound throughout which kind of lost me, but that's not unusual for 70s punk and overall it's very tight and a good listen. another band that was likely better live. may do again louder. 4/20

I can't imagine what a bore you'd have to be to give this one star. Stick to the eagles mate. 3.5 stars

Me encanta

Can’t say i was familiar with Buzzcocks but after doing some research I definitely should have been, these guys are influential as hell to punk, which is a genre that influenced a lot of music I like today. While I do deeply appreciate what they inspired I’m here to talk about the album, which is surprisingly enjoyable despite the “scratchy” vocals and kind of basic lyrics. It has a raw and unique sort of sound which works in its favor very nicely as a whole. Also, I just wanted to throw this in, the guitarist was fantastic I really liked what they provided to this. Favorite Tracks: Fiction Romance, No Reply, and Moving Away From The Pulseboat.

Liked this one quite a bit! Nice mix of punk and rock, I listened thru twice easily. 4/5

Solid British love punk. I don’t think I’ve heard anything but the greatest hits of the buzzcocks but I enjoyed it. I Don’t Mind is an excellent song and gets this to a 4.

The Buzzcocks are urgent and catchy — a sharp attack from when pop punk meant something else. Tighter, artier, and driven by a nervous energy racing to new territories. Another Music in a Different Kitchen is more proof that kinetic and angsty music can still be well-crafted.

This is really good. Its simple but just so catchy with a good sound. Offers decent variety with a bass solo, the longer closer with even a drum one. I think I will be returning to this and its rating should go up

I only knew of Ever Fallen In Love by the Buzzcocks, never listened to any of their other stuff. This was good punky upbeat fun, enjoyed it a lot!

Day446 - i’m really getting a punk music education and this is good stuff

Not quite Hard Core Punk to me but definite edge to it.

Love cocks. Nothing better than an angsty cocks. Some people say cocks are to loud and rambunctious but to hell with them. We call those people cocksblockers. Always willing to ingest some cocks. 8/10

A nice way to blow off the cobwebs on a monday morning :) It was exactly what I was hoping, and sounded more modern than I expected too? I wouldn't say life changingly must-listen, but good!

Interesting songs that push power chord driven tunes to interesting places

Nice powerful rock - like it!

good stuff

Early British punk that signals new wave with its energetic tunefulness and experimentation.

This is a solid-ass Buzzcocks album. There aren't too many of my favorite songs of theirs on here, but it's still the great smutty pop-punk that we've come to know from the Buzzcocks. It also shows that they weren't afraid to experiment a bit, as with the long instrumental section of the last track 4/5

Short and sweet and entertaining.

It's very Clarrie-Anne. Might enjoy this after 8 pints.
