eh
mmm
Oh god, look at that cover. No prizes for guessing it's yet more Britpop. One to Another felt vaguely familiar and shit, the rest unfamiliar and shit. I guess it's really a testament to how good Oasis was that they managed to take as unappealing a sound as Britpop and make it *that* good. 2/5 for these dickheads though.
Might be the most UK cover I have ever seen. At first glance, I'm unsure if this is the same guy four times or four distinct individuals. With No Shoes has a light pop-rock tone with whiny lead vocals. Three songs in, this is pretty bland 90s alt-rock if I've ever heard it. One to Another is supposed to be the most popular song on the album. I guess I can see why. Of what I've heard so far this has the most energy and feels the punchiest. That said, its a pretty boring song. You're a Big Girl Now is actually my favorite of the album so far. An acoustic guitar melody with some harmonized vocals. Simple, but effective. Get On It might be my favorite song from the entire album, but nothing throughout feels particularly interesting. hard 2/5
I give it 2.5 stars. Not terrible, they sound like Oasis.
Fairly boring album, nothing really stood out
Good, but not seminal, way too much filler
As an early fan of the charlatans, I loved some friendly and between 10th and 11th, the latter of which is one of my all time favourite albums. This album is so middle of the road, almost an oasis derivative (which is saying something). It's just really, really dull.
Best Song: You're A Big Girl Now. This is the length of song that they should be writing. Snippy little bits under 3 minutes. Worst Song: Rob's Theme. A weird, pointless jam song that sounds like it was recorded through a closed door. Overall: Absolutely perplexed how this forgettable album by a band lost to history made it on this list. How many people, even when they're in the mood for this genre, are reaching for a record by The Charlatans? Who did this go on to influence?
I love how the album generator website provides a summary of our listening habits. If Robert Dimery went through his own book on this website, I have no doubt that Britpop would be consistently on his Summary page's Favourite Genres. Sometimes Britpop is on my Worst Genres top three. But lately it has fallen off that list. Let's try to fix that by acknowledging that the only reason The Charlatans are on this list is because they are British.
Oasis wannabes.
I find this to be generic sounding 90s rock. It sounds like an AI generated. I feel no soul, no energy.
1997! This has promise. :) It's a bit Oasisy it was alright.
This feels like an album I had to be there for when it came out in 1996. Nothing really stood out for me here. Vocal delivery after a while got a little bit tiring. Musically there were some good spots but a lot of unmemorable songs for me.
Oasis with a couple of canned beats. 4/10
Landfill britpop
Eehhh… not bad. But not for me.
This is okay in a mid-nineties generic Brit rock kind of way. Required listening it is not.
They're just sort of an Oasis clone honestly, cool... but generic.
I'm a big britpop apologist and some of my favorite albums of all time are britpop ("Dog Man Star", "Attack of the Grey Lantern", "The Bends", "In It For The Money" to name a few) , but this album was just completely inoffensive. Oasis is my least favorite of the big four and this band sounds like even more boring Oasis. More bands should have ripped off Suede instead.
So unpleasant
2/5 Once again, I have tried Brit Pop and tested my feelings about them and once again...I'm not a huge fan. During the first song, I said to myself "If they continue this whiny, nasally sound through all the songs, I am not going to like it." Sure enough, nasally whiny sounding. It's not my genre I guess, which is weird cause I love a Brit and I love pop.
Kanske charlataner, men tråkiga charlataner.
The producer done a good job. I’ll give them that.
Paint by numbers britpop that doesn't do anything particularly original or great to warrant it to be on this list imho.
Pretty bland britpop/madchester album. How I expect Oasis would have sounded in the mid 90s if Noel never joined. Some ok songs (title track for example) but the majority is forgettable. Lacking the actual good tunes that Oasis/Stone Roses/Dodgy/Doves had. Maybe one of those had to be there moments.
Oh boy, more British rock... The sheer volume of British rock albums in this list has almost irreparably tainted my view of British music artists. The flavor of this band is a whiney lead singer and lackluster instrumentation. Probably a 2/5
“The Only One I Know” is the only song I know by the Charlatans, which isn’t on this album. That was a groovy track. This just sounds like Oasis. Not very exciting.
When I saw the album cover I thought, I bet these guys sound like Oasis. 2.275
I bet whoever made this list freakin loves oasis
Not a fan of this at all really - it's not terrible, just very MOR. One to Another is the only really memorable song.
Not bad by any means, just boring as hell.
Frekar viðburðalítil plata. Inn á milli eru lög sem vantar bara eitthvað smá oompf upp á.
Nothing much to say. It's okay, i guess. 2.5/5
A slightly better version of Oasis is still Oasis
Another britpop album that sounds exactly the same as all the others
2/5. Nothing super interesting to take with me. Feels like they should sound from the 70s but they’re from the 90s and that’s not a compliment.
It's alright, Charlatans were always the least interesting band of the Madchester scene. Didn't listen to this whole album when it came out but I remember that 'North Country Boy' was played too often on the radio and it got annoying quick. Tim Burgess seems like a nice man from his Twitter presence but his singing voice is perhaps even more annoying than Ian Brown and to read that he based his delivery on Wu-Tang is laughable. The only nod to hip-hop I heard was a few apologetic record scratches.
notes - fifth album by the charlatans - the bands keyboard player died in an accident before the completion of the album - reminds me of oasis but less good - which makes sense, they played together often - really great bass playing fav - tellin stories - Like the psychedelic opening least fav - how high - Just very noisy and forgettable 2.5/5 would rather listen to oasis
It’s ok Listened at the time His voice gets on my tits a bit … Some decent songs …. Very safe really Of.The.Time. (Better than Oasis)
I don't remember anything. No melodies, lyrics, etc. It really went in one ear out the other in my case. I don't have much to say. Highlights: -
Indie Britrock mediocrity.
This was unremarkable. I forgot what every song sounded like after it was over. Not really sure why it's on the list. Wasn't awful, but wasn't really good either. My favourite song was Rob's Theme I guess, but nothing really stood out.
Blegh I was just so done by the time this album ended
I really dig the second thing, the Primal Scream sound, but can't grok how it's supposed to fit with the Britpop. That works at certain times, simply (not really) doesn't work at others.
Rocketing straight into mediocrity
not really interested
Go arrêter la musique et devenir homéopathes
Pretty generic Britpop, not as good as early Oasis or as interesting as the Stone Roses or Primal Scream. Not bad either but just kind of forgettable. Not always a fan of the lyrical or vocal choices made. Didn't recognize any songs on the album. Standout tracks: One to Another, Area 51, How High
I like them more when they’re not trying to be Oasis so hard.
Sounds like Oasis with too much organ.
Oasis but make it bland and without all the fun Liam Gallagher antics
The album was just meh. It was not really noteworthy.
Riffs arent great on this Bass is kinda hit or miss but its mostly good The singer sounds kinda bored at points to me Some songs just feel like filler Overall not the worst thing we've had but still not amazing 4/10
Sub par album of the 90s. Not a patch on stone roses oasis or blue.
Not bad in any way, but pretty dull and emotionless. Anyway, I can't see why this is on this list.
Basic britpop, not very bad, neither very good
I have no problem with this band, it's not bad at all. But please make room for newer, more alternative bands instead of putting generic stuff like that in the challenge. Looks like a copy of Oasis, but without personality.
Ugh, more Brit-pop
Wasn’t a huge fan at the time of this, and it feels very much of its time. I like the more 60s / psychedelic influence, but the voice at times puts me in mind of Oasis and this really put me off. The songs didn’t really grab me. Quite liked the last track if I had to choose one.
I waited for this album to get its hooks into me and it never did. Very hard not to make comparisons to Oasis. This is like Oasis with less personality, maybe? I don't know. It's all very tight and thought out, but just didn't get to me.
Meh. Never really got the Charlatans. Don't really like Tim Burgess' voice - it's got a similar nasal whine to Liam Gallagher's voice and it cuts right through my patience... They're an okay band, I don't go out of my way to avoid them, but I can't really say they interest me in any way. Couple of good songs that are fine but I didn't make it through this album - North Country Boy nipped my head to the point of needing a decent vocalist chaser.
Meh
Never liked his voice to be honest. A few familiar, catchy tracks. Not a big fan though.
I'm staring at my blank wall listening to this, and the wall is more interesting. It scores a few points for a not being totally impossible to listen to, but it sounds so generic and basic and safe that I can't see many redeeming qualities. 3/10
Generic pop. The last few choices haven't left me with a lot of confidence in this person's album choices
It's alright, but I've never really rated The Charlatans - I guess the clue's in the name. They sound like an inferior version of a lot of their contemporaries (Stone Roses, Oasis etc). It's only the piano/organ sounds that really distinguishes them. 2.5
Not my thing
This album was a little too "jam bandy" for my taste, though I did appreciate the way they used the electronic piano to put in some funkiness and the harmonica to lighten up the guitar riffs. I did like the first half of the last song, but mostly because, after a bunch of songs on the record, it more closely fit my musical sensibilities.
Sounds like Oasis on an off-day.
Not a fan. Didnt do anything for me.
Terrible Rubbish
meh... the singers voice is too whiny (at least for my current mood).
Lotta Brits on this list.
Madchester, Unfortunately I was a bit too old for the Anoraks and Fred Perry's of the '90's to busy bringing up the family so missed this whole vibe. Liked the Roses and Happy Monday's (From a distance) but didn't really get into the Charlatans. Listening to this for the first time then! Not really impressed not one for me but I suppose you had to be there in '97!
They is some potential, but it's hidden very deeply.
“One of the band's earliest known live performances was supporting The Stone Roses at the London School of Economics on 2 December 1988.” Well I never.
I was unable to detect anything particularly special about this album to merit its inclusion to this list
Cit. A. Zequila
Honestly, I think I just don't care for Britpop. It was... okay.
Underwhelming to me
boring brit pop, seemed a bit droney. dont think its iconic enough to be something i enjoy for the iconic factor.
very mediocre and boring.
Didn’t really stand out for me
blur pero en zzzzz
Ok pop I guess
Boring
pretty average 90's altpop
This album is pretty average, to be honest. The only songs I sort of liked were You're A Big Girl Now, Only Teething and Get On It.
Really quite boring. Nothing of substance outside of some neat guitar stuff
Is this not Oasis in (slight) disguise? Same wall of guitar sound and production, vocal intonation and phrasing, guitar style - all that's missing is an obnoxious twat freeloading as a singer. I quite liked it but clearly the two bands are interchangeable. Occasionally detected a Rolling Stones influence.
false
ok. reminds me of the early 90s, not particularly unique or captivating
Didn't vibe at all
More British alternative. Its basically a harder and heavier Oasis. One To Another is a good track. Yea this is like listening to a lost Oasis album, which means I'm pretty bored with the sound.
didnt like
I really don't get BritPop. It's fine?
oasis like.. bah
I don't get why this is good
started listening and it was pretty boring. didn't finish
generic brit pop
Same thing over and over again but ok
Ok but nothing special, similar to other UK stuff at the time.
2,5/5
You've got to be fucking kidding me if you are trying to make the argument that this 3rd rate, derivative pablum is somehow essential in any way shape or form. Selections like this are a complete joke.
Listening to "Tellin' Stories" was like listening to a coat of Eggshell paint dry for 46 minutes while quietly and badly humming songs by Oasis and The Stone Roses from memory. The end result is boring and derivative, and not worth listening to. 1/5
Make Oasis more boring than the Verve with a completely nondescript singer and you get this.
It’s like oasis but even worse
Not really deserving of a spot on this list. Indistinguishable from every other band within the continental radius of britpop and alt rock of the 90's. ROUGH vocals that sit in a nasally register for just about every song. The only bit of mercy is that it stopped after 11 songs. No techinically impressive instrumentation to bail it out, no great hooks buried under the shitty presentation of the music. Sometimes the mix even felt off, like the random keys barging in at 1:36 on "How High". Felt dead on arrival 1/5
Save you time, you can never get it back
Didn't do it for me. Just a bit bland
We need to abolish Britpop
If you can’t afford the name brand this basically tastes the same with only a slight chemical after taste
This sucked
If this album was a sandwich it’d be a single slice of dry turkey on white bread with dollar store mayo
Another boring soft rock britpop album. There are at least a dozen other albums on this list that do the same thing better, and most of them earlier, as well. This album has absolutely no reason to be here.
Why is everything on this list from the mid/late nineties Brit pop? Ugh. I can think of plenty of albums from that era that aren’t that are at least listenable. I try not to judge an album by its cover, but I knew exactly what dredge I was in for as soon as I saw this one without even knowing the charlatans. This is nothing more than discount Oasis. Which, given the fact that listening to Oasis makes me want to punch a Gallagher in the face. The only redeemable tracks are the instrumentals because I didn’t have to hear that nasally, whiney vocal that characterizes every Brit pop band.
After two consecutive listens, I don't think I could name a single distinct thing about this album. It's by no means poorly executed, but I just feel like I've heard this exact 80/90s Brit rock album 1,000 times from 100 artists. Hyperbole? Sure, but this is easily the most bored I've been listening to an album on this list. At least albums I straight up didn't like had something for me to chew on, even if it was bitter. This was just the epitome of milquetoast for me, utterly forgettable.
??? "original list was made. I've still only gotten 1 jazz album on this list, but there seems to be an endless supply of late 90s to early 00s British rock bands that I have to slog through to get to good albums." britpop halt...c
idk wasn’t my vibe, a bit too punky
👎 no
dont know
This album did nothing for me. It was so bland and generic, they might as well have been called wonderwall cause they sound like a mediocre oasis cover band. Honestly I relistened to the album to try and find something to take away from it and was left empty handed.
These guys were openers for Oasis for some time. So imagine going to an Oasis concert, because you hate yourself, and who's their opener? Pretty much Oasis. You die from boredom instantly
I like Britpop and this was completely forgettable, as a record and a band. It’s 10 minutes after I finished listening and it made absolutely no impression at all I don’t remember a thing. Crazy that this would be on a list of albums of must-hears before you die.
it was called "baggy". it is dire.
1 out of 5 Like Oasis but with no talent and much worse.
This alt-rock album feels like riding a bus through drizzly suburbs—muted, reliable, a bit washed-out, steady boredom.
This is fucking boring.
Oh great, generic Britpop! Just what this list needed! On another note, take a look at the overall rating of this album. If you saw an average of 2.5, you would consider it firmly in the middle of the road, right? Wrong. Because of the absence of the zero-star option, ratings get inflated. Look at the bar graphs, and you'll see that this record has more ratings on the left than the right. It's a sub-mediocre album, and yet its average hovers around 2.95. With a 1-5 system, the total is 15 and the average is 3. It's like saying the lowest grade you could give a student is 20%, even if they had done zero work, or skipped the course entirely. We need a zero-star option!!!
Another boring fucking album. This is just any generic pop rock band. Goo goo dolls. Kings of Leon. Etc. 3/10.
Britpop: I would prefer to listen to the sum of the Charlatans' parts; surprise, it's hyper-derivative Britpop.
if you've exhausted oasis's discography and also hate yourself, then boy do i have an album for you! thrice reheated britpop slop and just insulting that anybody could try to argue this is one of the 1001 most important albums ever
Not for me.
Legit hate it. Noisy. Loud. And largely uninspired. Layers of instruments and sounds tripping over each other.
Rating: 1.0 What if we made Oasis suck ass… and put one of the worst songs I’ve ever heard (You’re A Big Girl Now) on there too… and for good measure be so irrelevant in the US as a result of our impenetrable Britishness that when we tour there we have to be “The Charlatans UK…”
Brit Pop strikes again. This album is completely forgettable, wannabe Oasis. I did not need to hear it in this (or any) lifetime.
Not trending up lately - another blase choice
Not good
They should rename this band the Hoovers. Because they really suck.
This is fine but you can’t tell me it’s an album I must listen to before I die. The Brit influence on this list strikes again with this being at least the 100th album of my 428 so far that sounds exactly like this.
I am not a fan of this. It's like stone roses but without that grove and musicianship and songwriting and spark. Kind of like oasis but at least they provide a pale imitation of the Beatles at the same time. That just leaves charmless yowling mancunians.
Ei oikein tiedä mitä se on. Alkuun Oasista, sitten jotain instrumentaalia.
A generic britpop style album. (Except for that one big-beat style track that I kinda liked.)
Another basic, boring British album that was so forgettable that I forgot I was listening to it. I was going to give it a 2 but then it got so much worse in the back half that I actively started hating it and How High grated my nerves
Meh
The Britpop bias in this list strikes again. This just doesn't do anything for me, and it doesn't even have the critical relevance of bands like Blur to make up for it.
Ass
Noise
meh
Some okay jams but britpop as a whole flies over my head, sounds so bland.
P785. 1996. 1 star. Poor man's Oasis without the tunes or the talent. Not much to like here.
There were three British invasions. Beatlemania lasting till say 1965. Then that early to mid 70s stuff. Deep purple, Bowie (kind of), Zeppelin, Uriah Heap, Jethro Tull, Queen. Etc. There’s what I’d call more of an incursion in the 80s with the smiths and the cure etc. Britpop is the third. And the weakest. All sound the same. Not many strong songs. All more reflective of a declining power than a strengthening one. And while I can listen to some oasis or blur and think yep this is pretty good, there was nothing in this album that grabbed me. Oh the lead singer died. That’s genuinely awful. And tragic. But it doesn’t make this a good album. 1 star.
Terrible 90s English crap no one will remember
Generic. Just had to be there I guess
Blander and more irrelevant than dry toast. Really fed up with how biased this list is.
"We have Oasis at home" Oasis at home;
Why did every band want to sound like and even look like Oasis? I don't understand the writers of this book. This is so bland. You are definitely English.
OOF! No thanks. Generic, bland. Tries to do everything popular ends up sounding like nothing.
SHEIN version of Oasis. Dollar General Stone Roses. Sucked. O stars 1001 album worthy: no - 79/144
The whole genre of "Britpop" is something that I remember with certain amount of distaste (bordering on nausea) - images of Oasis toadying-up to Tony Blair and his "New Labor" cronies, who went in to instigate the deaths of 100,000 Iraqi civilians. This was , musically, a grim time for Britain and should forgotten about as much as possible. I heard nothing about it that remotely interested me, and the false cockney accent of the lead singer of Blur still haunts my worst nightmares! "Cool Britannia", indeed.
Generic, whining and boring. In other words: BritPop.
If Aerosmith grew up listening to Oasis and weren't as dedicated to their craft, this might be the junk they recorded. I swear a few of the songs were literally the same song.
Gear: Hifiman Arya Artwork: 🔳📸💩💩💩💩 Production: 👂🔪🩸 Music: 🎸🇬🇧💩 Rating: 👞/5
This album would fit much better in a book titled 1001 albums to make you wish you could die
Soitto rullaa (klikkiin); biisit syntyvät (etukäteen omaksuttuina). En kuule erottelevia tekijöitä melkein missään. He olisivat pystyneet parempaan. 1,5
Oasis at home:
Even worse than Oasis.
I feel so depressed I don't know what I am doing. Лучшая песня - One To Another.
Somehow missed them back in the 90's and it was probably a good thing.
1. zhoez - 1.5 2. boy - 1 3. ztoriez - 1 4. another - 1 5. girl - 1 6. leave - 1 7. area 51 - 1 8. high - 1 9. teething - 1 10. get - 1 11. robz theme - 1
In a nutshell: it's a British thing. The Charlatans are one of those bands that were big in the UK but had limited success elsewhere. Think Oasis meets Blur meets Dexy's. It's different from Britpop but for me it is inessential when we have the aforementioned, Pulp and Suede. Overall: 2/10
Yep, that's some interchangeable britpop right there. Better than Oasis, but for me that's not a high bar.
I’m not surprised there’s a more talented Oasis out there, however I am surprised that there’s a more boring one.
Its not possible for me to like this album any less. 1/5
Soulless generic trash
I've listened to this album before, and I'm listening to it again, and I'll probably listen to this album again before I did for some God forsaken reason, and I don't know why. This is the kind of music that makes you think you'll never find a song you like again, an album that lacks a soul so much that you question if the forty-five minutes you sat there listening were even real. The music here is so generic, so void of life, that it has affected my very being for the worse. It isn't even necessarily bad! It is just such a homogenized glob of an album that I fail to see how this does anything for anyone. Vocals are like a dull blade, the guitars are just power chords for forty minutes, and if this album dares try anything "new," it does it in such a way where it just sounds like they took a genre and baked it into their own bland sound. There is nothing here worth listening to, and its complete lack of identity makes it more offensive to the ears than most terrible albums, because at least I have something to say about those. A waste of time, at least they had the decency to keep it under an hour.
Honestly, why is this on this list?
what BORING fucking shit. another dogshit uninspired uninteresting bland unengaging uncreative un-fucking-anything nothing dogshit braindead waste of fucking time album. its a singles album and the singles arent even fucking standout. this is like if guy ritchie went 'lets make the stinger tracks from my movies boring and fucking interesting' kill yourself british people
The entire time I was listening to this I had two major distractions. The first is the ridiculous way the keyboard player died, which I kept thinking of throughout, the second is the guy on the left of the album cover. He is menacing. He looks like he is about to mug me at a train station. Has the FASD stare. I didn’t like this. I don’t like Britpop. I gave up halfway through the album midway through the chore of a track that was you’re a big girl now. I was going to just mark this as did not listen, but I went back and listened to the tail end of the album. I’m sure you can consider this technically competent music but I do not like it. It is boring. I do not like the vocals. It is discount oasis. I am baffled why this is a MUST LISTEN. Please just let the next album be something I’m surprised by. I don’t even have to like it just make it interesting. So many random nothingburger slogs.
I found this boring, but I'm not a big fan of 90s britpop.
Starting to realize this list of 1001 albums is the reflection of some Oasis Superfan who likes shitty Brit-pop.
Nah
Sounds like Oasis. Just as boring. I don't like this at all. I would be stoked if there were no more britpop, sophisti-pop, or blue-eyed soul left on the list, but I don't think the odds are with me on this. 1.49/5
Largely forgettable vintage 90s rock band. Wont give it another listen
can't stand his whiny voice
I am not sure why I needed to listen to this. For every uninspired Oasis copycat band with a bored sounding singer, there has to be something more interesting and adventurous elsewhere. I don't know. 1001 records isn't that much when you look in the entire world of music. I had a great day listening to Mulatu Astatke instead of the Charlatans.
What. Is. The. Point.
No fresh water at this oasis
Mid ass UK garbage
MIttelmäßiger Britpop ohne irgendetwas...
Never thought I'd get listen to everyone in England that could play a guitar. But here we are with this lost. Mid range at best. A song by stone roses came on after this and it was like a breath of fresh air. I hate stone roses.
Corny album
Generic britpop. I think there was a recency bias from when the original book was published that allowed this album to make the cut.
Not a big fan of this band or album. For fans of Oasis it might be somewhat of an enjoyable album (although not quite reaching Oasis levels) but not being a fan of Oasis would make it less of a chance i would enjoy the listening experience at all. The songs are average at best as is the delivery. The album was a somewhat long and difficult listen for me. Not sure how it made the list. Best songs of the bunch: North Country Boy, One to Another.
Poor man’s Oasis. Felt like I was listening to a bunch of b-sides of better Britpop bands.
charlatans, great name nnn
This is sooo unremarkable. What justifies putting it on the list?
Woaw c'est insignifiant
Nooh 97...
I'm so-so on this. Kind of like a bad Oasis album.
You fucking kidding me with this?
I knew just by seeing the cover that I wouldn't like this album. Just had a feeling.
didn’t listen to all of them
Te zeurderig
Nope
A few nice riffs, some decent production. Singer's voice barely tolerable. Managed to make it to the end only by tuning out most of the songs.
Langweilig..
Ikkje ein grunnlovsdag verdig
