Kinda generic sounding 90's alternative.
Mixing turn-of-the-century Britpop with 60s and 70s rock was an interesting idea, but it didn't really work. I found the album boring and derivative. Also, it just sounds like the vocals are not at the center of the songs. Not that they are too quiet or unclear, but I could not tell you what a single song is about or what the singer sounds like.

This was a decent Britpop album. The use of acid house and hip hop beats was interesting as well. One thing that sticks in my mind is just how similar the vocal delivery is to Liam Gallagher of Oasis. The Charlatans formed first, but seem to be influenced by Oasis' particular brand of Britpop in addition to their acid house and Madchester influences. While the album was enjoyable, there just wasn't much that stuck with me.
Another rehash of alternative/britpop/whatever, ala Oasis or Stone Roses. I wouldn't consider this essential.

Meh, this album was rather generic. I did enjoy some of the instrumental tracks at the end. Probably won't listen to this again.
I think I'd heard the band's name in the past but I don't recall if I've heard their music before. I like this album. Some good indie rock on here, very well performed, and at times quite interesting (I'm re-listening to 'Area 51' as I write this -- I dig the semi-prog-rock vibe of it, even a little jam-band-esque in a good way in moments). I'll have to hear more from them. Good stuff.

Four monster tracks, two instrumentals (surely a rule of rock that you can only have one per album if you're not an instrumentals band) and some business as usual Charlieboys album. Solid but not their very best. 3.5 rather than 3, but not 4.

Didn't know what to expect. A lot of Brit-pop bands are hit and miss with me, but basically all I want to hear is crunchy, bright guitars, catchy songs and a band that is non-pretentiousness and passionate. Tellin' Stories checks most of those boxes and the music is enjoyable enough to not check my watch or to see when this would end. Maybe I underestimated the Charlatans or I had preconceived notions about the band, but whatever the reason, the music is fine and I'm glad I gave it a chance!
Expected more but enjoyed it.
# 74 : Ok I guess, nothing special, it's only 50 minutes or so, but seemed to go on forever. Not my thing, kind of like every pub band I listened to growing up in the nineties. Enough of the Nineties Brit Pop!

It was a very relaxing album that made me feel upbeat. Sounded very similar to the Ocean's soundtrack

Well, if you're into the Stone Roses, you're going to dig 'Tellin' Stories'. Who did it better?
A repeat of what I wrote upon listening to a Shack album recently: "This is an example of some of the music from the UK that never made it to my ears over the years (especially in the 90s) that I've been so happy to give a proper listen." However, although it was absolutely enjoyable enough to listen to, it felt fairly middle of the road and not much grabbed my attention or stayed in my memory.
The hoping track kind of grabbed me...then the album kind of turned a bit middle of the road...then there was a bit of variety to engage me again...then it fizzled out again. I guess it was fine, but not all that interesting.
Maybe I’m just on a vacation high but everything sounds so great to me right now. I loved this so much!
Sort of an Oasis-y sounding band that I found quite pleasant to listen to. Plus they make liberal use of the rock organ which is always more than welcome to my ears. Nice!

Quelques pièces qui ont un peu plus captivé mon attention que d'autres (comme de raison les plus populaires). Généralement une très belle production, un très beau mixing, des musiciens talentueux. Mais malheureusement ça sonne comme un band générique de brit pop comme tant d'autres. Je dirais même que ça ressemble particulièrement à du Oasis. Ce n'était pas particulièrement mauvais, mais j'aurais pu mourir sans avoir écouté cela. 5.5/10

Very bland album from the band that nobody wanted to own up to liking at the time. They were a few years too late, too poppy, a bit whiny and derivative. This album was pretty much what I was expecting, like a poor man's version of all the more accomplished bands around that had already done the same thing a decade or so earlier. The murky production didn't help much and there wasn't anything to stand out, no amazing guitar or exciting compositions, just lots of stuff that sounded a bit like other bands. I was considering a 3-star rating, but I think I'll drop this one to a 2.

I suppose I just LIKE britpop/britrock. These guys have even less creativity than talent and they may lack souls.... but each track is as good as the last one and these grooves are passable
Oh god, look at that cover. No prizes for guessing it's yet more Britpop. One to Another felt vaguely familiar and shit, the rest unfamiliar and shit. I guess it's really a testament to how good Oasis was that they managed to take as unappealing a sound as Britpop and make it *that* good. 2/5 for these dickheads though.
Might be the most UK cover I have ever seen. At first glance, I'm unsure if this is the same guy four times or four distinct individuals. With No Shoes has a light pop-rock tone with whiny lead vocals. Three songs in, this is pretty bland 90s alt-rock if I've ever heard it. One to Another is supposed to be the most popular song on the album. I guess I can see why. Of what I've heard so far this has the most energy and feels the punchiest. That said, its a pretty boring song. You're a Big Girl Now is actually my favorite of the album so far. An acoustic guitar melody with some harmonized vocals. Simple, but effective. Get On It might be my favorite song from the entire album, but nothing throughout feels particularly interesting. hard 2/5

I liked this album!
It is no surprise at all that this band used to open for Oasis, they sound the exact same. Area 51 is a very cool instrumental track. I wish all of the songs were instrumental because I do not really fancy 90s British alternative singers voices Get On It was the best song by far and probably the only song I would listen to again It was very cool of them to include Rob's Theme to honor their keyboardist Rob Collins who died in a car crash while recording the album
Tellin stories??? More like tellin bories. Sounds like Oasis. I also don’t really like Oasis so this is pretty meh. Area 51 is actually interesting and probably my favorite song on the album. This was a hard 2 for me but the second half got a bit better. 2.5 but I’ll bump it up.
Fairly boring album, nothing really stood out
This is their best album? Ok, well didn't really get into it. Standout track for me was One To Another.
This is fine. I suspect if it had the same sort of forced ubiquity as Oasis in the 90s I woulda hated it for much the same reason, but it didn't, so I don't. Fave tracks - "One to Another" is a tune, and "How High" I can appreciate, although would probably hate it if it got endlessly overplayed...
I really struggle in rating albums like this. It is inoffensive and not remarkable, but also pleasant enough that it didn't intrude in any unpleasant way. A decent album to put on while I drink my morning coffee and browse the ol' Internet on this Sunday morning, but on the other hand, it lacks a certain spice to make me want to listen to more. It is worse off being kind of boring or being kind of painful on the ears? Settled on 3 stars based on the merit that (morbidly enough) it is a wonder that this album flows as smoothly as it does considering the circumstances behind it's production. It helps that this album does not drag.
Cool britpop sounding rock, but fails to stand out in any grand way.
Entertaining album, very reminiscent of Britpop. In the end though just missing that one or two standout songs to bump it up to 4 stars

If you think “90s Brit-alt rock”, this album is basically exactly what you’d expect. The only thing that kind of irked me is that the vocalist sounds like he wants to be Billy Corgan but doesn’t have that voice.
first time listening
3.5 stars. More from the 'Madchester' britpop genre, that gives a summer Oasis-y sound. And while it isn't quite as good as Stone Roses, it is catchy. Lot's of keyboard effects that set the listener squarely in the 90's. Overall there aren't major standouts nor are there duds, just a front to back decent listen.

I will acknowledge that this is Oasis light and probably shouldn’t be on the list. However, it’s fun, power pop music that I really like.

I like The Charlatans, but hadn't given this a listen. Probably would have liked it more at the time, now it sounds quite dated. Enough good songs there to try again.
It starts off as typical brit-pop but has some nice experimentation, especially later in the album. The majority of the songs sound a lot like Oasis, but to The Charlatans credit, its like if Oasis stopped writing the same few songs over and over and actually tried something different.

As an early fan of the charlatans, I loved some friendly and between 10th and 11th, the latter of which is one of my all time favourite albums. This album is so middle of the road, almost an oasis derivative (which is saying something). It's just really, really dull.
Would have loved this when I was younger but there are other bands of the same era that do the same thing better and more timelessly.
Sounds like The Charlatans trying their best to be Oasis. I prefer their baggier earlier sounds to this, surprised that this album is considered "essential listening". But not bad, I don't guess.
Best Song: You're A Big Girl Now. This is the length of song that they should be writing. Snippy little bits under 3 minutes. Worst Song: Rob's Theme. A weird, pointless jam song that sounds like it was recorded through a closed door. Overall: Absolutely perplexed how this forgettable album by a band lost to history made it on this list. How many people, even when they're in the mood for this genre, are reaching for a record by The Charlatans? Who did this go on to influence?

What's the difference between Charlatans and Charlatans UK? ... I dunno, that's a serious question. Listened to this with a loose idea of these guys, was much more contemporary than I thought it would've been... I was thinking these were late '80s / early 90's but they sound a lot like Oasis only less polished, plastic and perfect. Damn, I hate Oasis. Didn't mind this listen, was very Britty-gritty 90's and got into the music. They sound a lot like one of my guilty pleasures, a band called Oasis.
I love how the album generator website provides a summary of our listening habits. If Robert Dimery went through his own book on this website, I have no doubt that Britpop would be consistently on his Summary page's Favourite Genres. Sometimes Britpop is on my Worst Genres top three. But lately it has fallen off that list. Let's try to fix that by acknowledging that the only reason The Charlatans are on this list is because they are British.
Oasis wannabes.
I don't know what they are trying to say calling themselves the Charlatans. Are they falsely claiming to have a special knowledge or skill? Are they frauds? I actually think that description applies much more to Oasis, but mostly because the Gallagher brothers seem to have an inflated estimate of their importance. I dig this rockier, more self-effacing version of Britpop.
I find this to be generic sounding 90s rock. It sounds like an AI generated. I feel no soul, no energy.
It was a fun listen. It was quite the hodgepodge of genres under a bow of Brit pop, featuring some shoegaze-y production at times (which did clash with the Brit pop vocals) alongside some songs that had incredibly catchy instrumentation, bass lines specifically. It was a bit all over the place, where some songs grew on me and others didn’t, but there are a lot of good ideas going on here. Just a bit unfocused. Stands out amongst the sea of Brit pop though which I do appreciate.

This feels like an album I had to be there for when it came out in 1996. Nothing really stood out for me here. Vocal delivery after a while got a little bit tiring. Musically there were some good spots but a lot of unmemorable songs for me.
Very britpop: I'm not sure what to say other than that. Not a remarkable album by any means but not awful either. I think it would be rather inoffensive to call it a 3 bc it's neither amazing nor the worst thing anyone could listen to.
7/10. I'm still not confident on whether the album cover has four different guys, or one guy four times.

No pienso que nadie oiga este disco y lo considere como algo imprescindible.
Bellissimo e un punto storico del brit pop, è la svolta per lo stile dei charlatans e il momento in cui la loro musica matura veramente, tutto quanto. Preferisco Tellin' Stories e il loro acid pop un po' più immaturo e onestamente più creativo

I'm a big britpop apologist and some of my favorite albums of all time are britpop ("Dog Man Star", "Attack of the Grey Lantern", "The Bends", "In It For The Money" to name a few) , but this album was just completely inoffensive. Oasis is my least favorite of the big four and this band sounds like even more boring Oasis. More bands should have ripped off Suede instead.
While there is alot of Britpop on this list, this one wasn’t as insufferable as the rest. Quite enjoyable actually.

2/5 Once again, I have tried Brit Pop and tested my feelings about them and once again...I'm not a huge fan. During the first song, I said to myself "If they continue this whiny, nasally sound through all the songs, I am not going to like it." Sure enough, nasally whiny sounding. It's not my genre I guess, which is weird cause I love a Brit and I love pop.
Familiar with the band although not being able to name a single song by them doesn't always bode well. This to me felt like a budget price or reject Oasis album, with the sneering nasal singing the most obvious crossover. Nothing standout and nothing great. Still can't name a single song by them...
Definitely has that 90's midlands sound, reminiscent of Oasis and later Kasabian to a certain extent, but their own twist. An enjoyable album and one I saved a number of songs to a rock playlist to revisit later.
This feels unfair on this album but I feel like throughout the process of this 1001 albums thing I have listened to soooo many British punk rock bands from this era. There's nothing wrong with this but I'm just getting sick of the lack of variety? How can all these albums be influential when they all sound the same? I'll give it a 3 because this wasn't a fair assessment and the music isn't bad
Pretty nice britpop with a slightly fuzzy, almost psychedelic approach. A few of the longer instrumental sections felt a bit aimless, but the songs were generally solid
The way I knew this band would have an Oasis connection from the first second I heard them...I love UK's music output for the most part, but the stuff they were pumping out in the 90's just wasn't really doing it for me. There's nothing inherently wrong with this album per se -- I'd actually say I enjoyed almost all of it. But it's very cut-and-dry, down-the-middle stuff. I don't remember much about it, despite having just listened to it two hours ago. I could give it 4 stars, but I won't. Perfectly fine album. Just not one anyone NEEDS to hear before they die.

One of my favourite albums of the 90s the 4 singles are superb. Definitely the high point of their career. One to Another is one ofthe greatest indie disco tunes of all time. 4.5 stars bumped up to a 5.
More fineness
Pretty bland britpop/madchester album. How I expect Oasis would have sounded in the mid 90s if Noel never joined. Some ok songs (title track for example) but the majority is forgettable. Lacking the actual good tunes that Oasis/Stone Roses/Dodgy/Doves had. Maybe one of those had to be there moments.
Oh boy, more British rock... The sheer volume of British rock albums in this list has almost irreparably tainted my view of British music artists. The flavor of this band is a whiney lead singer and lackluster instrumentation. Probably a 2/5

I'm not a fan of britpop in general, which is why I didn't expect to enjoy this album. Sometimes it's nice to be mistaken. While I did find the vocals a bit annoying at times, it's the instrumentation that makes this album actually interesting and gives it a lot of variety.

A good album, but not a great one - it's consistent most of the way through (but not too samey), there's not an awful song on there and a couple of really good ones, North Country Boy and One To Another. They're better when they sound less like Oasis, How High sounds like a budget Gallagher impression, and it serves to remind you that what they've done doesn't have the same energy as the good Oasis albums. One To Another is definitely one that a lot of the British indie from the mid 00s borrowed from, Kasabian sound just like it. 3/5, missing something that would make them really stand out but a solid Britpop album.

Хороший альбом, позитивный, так сказать :) И вроде не к чему придраться в нём. Классный бритпоп, легко слушается, но не цепляет как-то ничем. Всё как-будто дефолтное какое-то. Слова обычные, голос обычный, супер выдающихся гитарных или ударных соляков не замечено. Разве что можно отметить внезапные вставки соула, которые отсылают нас к Бобу Дилану немножко. Чуваки ещё заявляли хип-хоп, но как-то особо я тут его не услышал особо. Хоть и ждал. Может быть, они имели в виду инструментал Zone 51 как хип-хоп, но что-то как-то не...
Добротный бритпоп
Surprising muscular album from the C. (Whose discography I don't know apart from a few singles) This album was marked by the death of the keyboardist during its production. Echoes of classic Stones and Dylan. Decent.
“The Only One I Know” is the only song I know by the Charlatans, which isn’t on this album. That was a groovy track. This just sounds like Oasis. Not very exciting.
When I saw the album cover I thought, I bet these guys sound like Oasis. 2.275
Had never previously heard or heard of them, but found it be moderate Brit pop Oasis rip offs. No single song seemed all that memorable. 3/5

I had pretty low expectations going into this album, but it was really fun, and I enjoyed it. When it popped up for me today, my first thought was "hooray, another album by Great Value Oasis." I'm glad that I was wrong. I loved that that the songs here had such a wide variance in sounds, especially the blues-ier songs like "How High." I love good keyboard parts, and this album definitely delivered on that, especially with "Get On It" and "Only Teething," both of which reminded me of Primal Scream (after reading about the album on Wikipedia, I was blown away to learn that Primal Scream's keyboardist helped finish the album after the original keyboardist died in a car accident. Sometimes my ears surprise me with what they can pick up). I loved "With No Shoes" and "Tellin' Stories" as well. The instrumentation and vocals on this album were really great, and while the sound here definitely has the 90's BritPop feel, this album manages to remain unique. I will definitely listen to this album again.

Even though it’s a bit too similar to oasis, this album started out super strong with the first 3-4 songs being great. I got somewhat tired of it by the end though so it’s a low 4. One to to another or north country boy are probably my favs.
It's alright, Charlatans were always the least interesting band of the Madchester scene. Didn't listen to this whole album when it came out but I remember that 'North Country Boy' was played too often on the radio and it got annoying quick. Tim Burgess seems like a nice man from his Twitter presence but his singing voice is perhaps even more annoying than Ian Brown and to read that he based his delivery on Wu-Tang is laughable. The only nod to hip-hop I heard was a few apologetic record scratches.

Surprised at how strong this was, however, it sounds like how a YouTube video looks when it's not properly loaded and you need to pause for it to figure it all out. A great record.
Ok. Sounds like oasis
I never understood why these guys weren't bigger. They had all the bits of Britpop I liked, just with better guitar (and everything else) tones.
This was one of those bands on the periphery of my listening...I knew just enough to know they existed, heard multiple times I should listen to them. I remember hearing "North Country Boy" and again, liked it, but the stand out on this one for me is "How High". They just got lost amongst a lot of higher profile bands, even before I clicked to listen briefly confused them with Good Charlotte. Overall, good album though. 3.5 stars.

Some interesting stuff here and there but probably not worth a relisten for me.
This was unremarkable. I forgot what every song sounded like after it was over. Not really sure why it's on the list. Wasn't awful, but wasn't really good either. My favourite song was Rob's Theme I guess, but nothing really stood out.

It’s alright; if Oasis was slightly more interesting and less whiney they’d probably sound a bit like this.
I enjoyed this. Very sad about Rob Collins dying part way through the making of the album. Don't drink and drive kids, and if you do be sure and wear your seatbelt. While I did like this album, it struck me as fairly standard Brit-pop, which is way over-represented on this list. 3 stars.

76/100: Never heard of The Charlatans before, but I really liked their sound. They sort of gave me an Arctic Monkeys mixed with The Sex Pistols kind of tone. Since I like both of those groups, of course I liked this album. While the sound itself was really cool and definitely fit neatly within my musical interests, I’m not sure how much I’ll revisit this album in the future. It didn’t really stand out to me all that much; however, I’m certainly interested in The Charlatans as a group and will likely explore their discography in the future.

Melodic but forgettable
Such striking similarities to Oasis, which I suppose is Oasis's fault because they came after, and became more successful with a similar sound. I could better hear the differences between the two bands by the end but only sort of. I'll say, I at least I enjoyed it enough that I'm interested to hear their other work.
A bit whinier than your average Britpop. Kind of like sour patch kids for the ears. Not my favorite type of candy, wouldn't want to eat a whole bag all at once, but okay in small doses.
Meh, more standard 90s brit-pop/rock. Really does absolutely nothing for me. Voice was slightly annoying but overall... ok.
Lovely album with some great tunes
A few nice riffs, some decent production. Singer's voice barely tolerable. Managed to make it to the end only by tuning out most of the songs.

Really really good, but not quite brilliant - so I guess it'll be 4 🌟! The big hits and that title track are the most immediate, but it's all pretty solid - just missing a bit of spark in my opinion

I like the vibe but it's a one-trick pony with no real variety. Madchester and the 90s, Britpop and Alt-rock etc were a great fun time and I'd have this on in the background but not really listen to any of them apart from the hits.

I have one album by The Charlatans. It's called US and US Only, I think it was the release immediately after Tellin Stories which I guess is their moat critically acclaimed album. What listening to Tellin Stories tells me is that I don't really need any other Charlatans albums. Nothing wrong with Tellin Stories it has some fine songs...but nothing anywhere near as strong as Forever from US and US Only. I much prefer US and US Only. 3.5 🌟
Starts off sounding like Oasis' less interesting cousin, but grows into something much more exciting as the album progresses. This could have been an amazing album if more of the first half matched the incredible energy displayed on "One to Another". Thankfully, the instrumentation on the back half of the album really redeemed this one for me, with some really energetic and explosive finales on songs like "How Can You Leave Us" and "Get On It". "Rob's Theme" is an unfortunately boring way to end off the album compared to the far more engaging lead up to it. Standout tracks: "One to Another", "How Can You Leave Us", "How High" and "Get On It"

This is a solid brit-pop brit-rock album. These guys were definitely up there with Oasis. I like, but don't LOVE brit-pop, but even so - this album is pretty darn good, and there's a few songs I have taken from it (With No Shoes and One to Another)

I really feel like britpop has little to offer outside of the big classics (and Doves' Lost Souls). I mean, this one's not bad, it even has some great tracks. At their best, they channel the baggy sound of the Stone Roses. At their worst, they sound like they're aping Oasis, which is something nobody should ever do under any circumstances.
Not bad in any way, but pretty dull and emotionless. Anyway, I can't see why this is on this list.
Basic britpop, not very bad, neither very good
I have no problem with this band, it's not bad at all. But please make room for newer, more alternative bands instead of putting generic stuff like that in the challenge. Looks like a copy of Oasis, but without personality.
Gave me an Oasis vibe
This is how English rock singers and indie rock bands were supposed to sound, circa 1992 – just the slightest sneering to the singing and the loosest . So call it state-of-the-art. This band is in one’s sweet spot, both temporally (i.e., era) and stylistically (i.e., a phile of Britpop in all its forms). But the operative question here is how well it holds up, and the answer is, very well.
I'm sorry the fothermucker died, condolences to the family, etc, but I still don't like Britpop.
Some of the songs are catchy (One to Another) and I don't mind the the overall sound but I don't see this LP coming out in 97 making much of a contribution to the alternative rock scene.
Ugh, more Brit-pop
Their inspirations are clear. Vocalist sucks, embodying Oasis lazy slurred singing with some Bob Dylan direct spoken word in "How High" and "Get On It." Keyboards reminisce of 60s soul and jazz, particularly the British variety of the Spencer Davis Group. I hear Rolling Stones riffs, as well as some swirly riffs in "With No Shoes" looking back to their Madchester days. There's a lot of diversity, including the acoustic "You're a Big Girl Now", the country-like "North Country Boy", the jazzy "Area 51", and the acid rock "Rob's Theme". The melodies are nice, and I'm a fan of the riffs at times and the keyboards, but unfortunately, nothing grabs my attention. I blame the vocalist, but I noticed in Britpop the instruments serve mostly to back up the vocalist, so there's little to look for until the solos when they're at their most creative. Even the album cover screams boring. Favorites: Tellin Stories, One to Another, How Can You Leave Us, Area 51, How High, Rob's Theme

Ok album. Didn’t feel like this one broke the mold of the British alternative style. They did what I feel oasis does better. Their songs are enjoyable yet somewhat repetitive. It’s good but nothing special. 5.6/10
Middling brit-pop
I certainly get the Oasis vibe with this one, but don't hold it against them and thought the whole album had a nice groove to it.
Wasn’t a huge fan at the time of this, and it feels very much of its time. I like the more 60s / psychedelic influence, but the voice at times puts me in mind of Oasis and this really put me off. The songs didn’t really grab me. Quite liked the last track if I had to choose one.
Bold and brash, full of ego. The vocals hover a little around Liam territory - not surprising given the Britpop territory at the time. This reminds me of listening to The Evening Session every night. The Charlatans always seemed to have a single out - a bit like The Smiths a decade earlier. North Country Boy bit of an anthem; there's a killer bass on One to Another. This was the start of the more thoughtful songwriting from the band. Tremendous stuff.
I waited for this album to get its hooks into me and it never did. Very hard not to make comparisons to Oasis. This is like Oasis with less personality, maybe? I don't know. It's all very tight and thought out, but just didn't get to me.
This one feels especially inessential. I suppose the one thing in its favour is, were you to ask me to simply imagine a rock album from 1997, the resulting mental composite would sound a lot like 'Tellin' Stories' by the Charlatans. 'One To Another' has a bit of a sting in the tail; 'How High' ain't too bad; and I quite enjoyed the quirky instrumental 'Area 51'. Everything else just sounds safe, conservative, uninspired and boring.

Meh. Never really got the Charlatans. Don't really like Tim Burgess' voice - it's got a similar nasal whine to Liam Gallagher's voice and it cuts right through my patience... They're an okay band, I don't go out of my way to avoid them, but I can't really say they interest me in any way. Couple of good songs that are fine but I didn't make it through this album - North Country Boy nipped my head to the point of needing a decent vocalist chaser.

This is by far the most by-the-numbers record we've listened to from this list. It's insufferably generic with some of the most vanilla guitar tones I've heard on a record. This wave of British rock that made purposefully boring Stones rock is entirely skip-able. It's amazing that this band was around before Oasis, but saw their success with Brit pop and decided to throw their hat in the ring after being overshadowed by the Stone Roses in the early 90s. Just give up if this is all you got. They waited until the outro track "Rob's Theme" to give us an interesting track on this album. Sheeeeeesh Wtf kinda drugs were these folks taking in the 90s anyways? Boring pills? Snooooooze.

I'm staring at my blank wall listening to this, and the wall is more interesting. It scores a few points for a not being totally impossible to listen to, but it sounds so generic and basic and safe that I can't see many redeeming qualities. 3/10

I wasn't sure if I was familiar with the band until I saw them listed as The Charlatans UK. All of the music on Tellin' Stories was new to me, and I couldn't say if I've heard anything from this band before. The Charlatans seemed like they would fit in with Blur, James, Oasis, and the Verve. "One to Another", "Area 51" and "Only Teethin'" were saved to my personal playlist. I'd be interested in hearing more from this band.

Pretty standard britpop offering
One of the Best by the Charlatans. One of the Best from the UK indie dance rock era in the 90’s.
Wat standaard alternative rock. Goed album, maar springt er niet persé uit
I try so hard to love the Charlatans as they are everything I want in a band but then again they just aren't. With the exception of a couple of early singles I have always found the band excel at being average. I wouldn't go as far as calling the also rans as they have etched out a reasonably successful and long career, they have just never burnt as bright as some of the contemporaries. So that brings me to this album Tellin' Stories, it came out at a time where Brit Pop was on the wane, big beat had stared to take over, Blur had reinvented themselves etc. Nothing on this albllum is exciting or new. Even 25 years on it feels like a lesser version of other bands. And Tim Burgess, his vocals start to grate by the time the album finally ends. For reasons, I can't even remember, North Country Boy is one of my least favourite songs of the era. I cringe when I hear it. Anyway, not a bad ablum but maybe not that essential either.

I liked this album well enough but it isn't too special to me. I likely will not return to any of these songs. My album yesterday was also a Brit-Pop/Rock album and I enjoyed that one significantly more.
