Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Sounds too much like Oasis. Thin production. But overall, not bad.

Hit me with your Brit Pop

predictably whiny?

Oasis, Blur, ... The Charlatans? I hadn't heard of them either, but likely because they were a bit overshadowed by the above "New British Invasion" bands. You can hear a very similar sound here with just a little bit more of a grungy feel. I think they're a great accompaniment piece to the above. You can slot this into a 90's mix and nobody would bat an eye. Worth a look if you like Oasis.

Eh. One of a million UK rock bands at this point. Not bad at all, a few songs I dug, but nothing really getting under my skin as a whole. Would have liked this more if not found 700 albums deep into this list. Favorite tracks: Get On It, Area 51, How High. Album art: Just four guys. Funny that the US release of this slaps "UK" on the cover after the band name, just to make sure you know. 3/5

The first half of this one was solid brit-pop bangers. The second half though is where things took a down turn. I found myself less interested in the second half, with it feeling much less fresh and fun. I think they got a little bit too indulgent towards the end too, with many songs being a little too long. All in all though it’s a solid project.

Mesma vibe de oasis, acredito que sejam contemporâneos. Legalzinho mas nada extraordinário

1st half boring same old same old brit pop. 2nd half this organ shows up and stuff gets funky and interesting.

If Oasis and Dylan have a child

Very musically reminiscent of Oasis (who they opened for) and Janes Addiction. The organ work is definitely a stand out on this album, but I can't say that any tracks stood out to me in particular.

Started strong and then had a bunch of boring tunes. Still enjoyable.

britpap

A bit like Oasis, but slightly more rock guitar. Not bad. Overall a 3. I liked "With no shoes" and "Area 51", but that was about it

Kinda generic sounding 90's alternative.

Surprisingly pretty good, nice diverse sound

This was a decent Britpop album. The use of acid house and hip hop beats was interesting as well. One thing that sticks in my mind is just how similar the vocal delivery is to Liam Gallagher of Oasis. The Charlatans formed first, but seem to be influenced by Oasis' particular brand of Britpop in addition to their acid house and Madchester influences. While the album was enjoyable, there just wasn't much that stuck with me.

Bien. Pero no me ha encantado.

I think I'd heard the band's name in the past but I don't recall if I've heard their music before. I like this album. Some good indie rock on here, very well performed, and at times quite interesting (I'm re-listening to 'Area 51' as I write this -- I dig the semi-prog-rock vibe of it, even a little jam-band-esque in a good way in moments). I'll have to hear more from them. Good stuff.

Kinda whiny oasis vibes

Classic rock. Enjoyable

Decent

Pretty mild but good, weaker 2nd side but had some bangers. (70%)

Good vibes!

Four monster tracks, two instrumentals (surely a rule of rock that you can only have one per album if you're not an instrumentals band) and some business as usual Charlieboys album. Solid but not their very best. 3.5 rather than 3, but not 4.

Expected more but enjoyed it.

Bien. Pero no me ha encantado.

This is one of the best Oasis album's I've heard.... wait? What? Charlatans? Never heard of them! It's fine. Not a very original sound, but listenable. 3/5

Very late 90's. Distinctive beat and flavor

Tellin’ some solid if not especially interesting stories. A good listen.

Well, if you're into the Stone Roses, you're going to dig 'Tellin' Stories'. Who did it better?

A repeat of what I wrote upon listening to a Shack album recently: "This is an example of some of the music from the UK that never made it to my ears over the years (especially in the 90s) that I've been so happy to give a proper listen." However, although it was absolutely enjoyable enough to listen to, it felt fairly middle of the road and not much grabbed my attention or stayed in my memory.

A perfectly fine album. Kind of generic, but charming.

don't really remember this album but in my older years I can appreciate it more. better than expected.

AJ: Oasis-y. Maybe the best Brit pop band besides Oasis that I’ve heard, maybe? Eh.

Not gonna lie, this is great for a britpop album. Grungy, short, and not pompous.

It’s alright,like b-tech oasis.

Some great tracks, it just does quite add up

Didn't really give it a chance.

I'll blame this on the British focus of this list. Nothing spectacular, though it's ok.

I suppose I just LIKE britpop/britrock. These guys have even less creativity than talent and they may lack souls.... but each track is as good as the last one and these grooves are passable

It is no surprise at all that this band used to open for Oasis, they sound the exact same. Area 51 is a very cool instrumental track. I wish all of the songs were instrumental because I do not really fancy 90s British alternative singers voices Get On It was the best song by far and probably the only song I would listen to again It was very cool of them to include Rob's Theme to honor their keyboardist Rob Collins who died in a car crash while recording the album

Tellin stories??? More like tellin bories. Sounds like Oasis. I also don’t really like Oasis so this is pretty meh. Area 51 is actually interesting and probably my favorite song on the album. This was a hard 2 for me but the second half got a bit better. 2.5 but I’ll bump it up.

This is their best album? Ok, well didn't really get into it. Standout track for me was One To Another.

Cool britpop sounding rock, but fails to stand out in any grand way.

Entertaining album, very reminiscent of Britpop. In the end though just missing that one or two standout songs to bump it up to 4 stars

first time listening

Fine? A worse oasis but whatever.

Inessential Oasis knockoffs. Again I ask, where is Drake, lil Wayne, or music by any woman?

I like The Charlatans, but hadn't given this a listen. Probably would have liked it more at the time, now it sounds quite dated. Enough good songs there to try again.

Sounds like The Charlatans trying their best to be Oasis. I prefer their baggier earlier sounds to this, surprised that this album is considered "essential listening". But not bad, I don't guess.

It was a fun listen. It was quite the hodgepodge of genres under a bow of Brit pop, featuring some shoegaze-y production at times (which did clash with the Brit pop vocals) alongside some songs that had incredibly catchy instrumentation, bass lines specifically. It was a bit all over the place, where some songs grew on me and others didn’t, but there are a lot of good ideas going on here. Just a bit unfocused. Stands out amongst the sea of Brit pop though which I do appreciate.

Very britpop: I'm not sure what to say other than that. Not a remarkable album by any means but not awful either. I think it would be rather inoffensive to call it a 3 bc it's neither amazing nor the worst thing anyone could listen to.

Not quite my taste, a bit too Brit Pop-y, some tracks sound quite dated. A couple I really liked though.

Enjoyed listening, gives me strong oasis vibes!

I may have to listen to this again because I kinda liked it but would really need to listen when I can listen more intently.

Decent stuff. Pretty typical 90's alternative, but nothing on the record is amazing. Didn't add any songs to my library.

Pretty standard Britpop - it’s nothing I’ve never head before, but still a pretty decent listen.

Nothing really memorable but good background music

Unoffensive and middle of the road 90s sound.

I enjoyed listening to this as far as being a genre I enjoy, but it’s forgettable and I don’t think I’ll be coming back to it.

Familiar with the band although not being able to name a single song by them doesn't always bode well. This to me felt like a budget price or reject Oasis album, with the sneering nasal singing the most obvious crossover. Nothing standout and nothing great. Still can't name a single song by them...

This feels unfair on this album but I feel like throughout the process of this 1001 albums thing I have listened to soooo many British punk rock bands from this era. There's nothing wrong with this but I'm just getting sick of the lack of variety? How can all these albums be influential when they all sound the same? I'll give it a 3 because this wasn't a fair assessment and the music isn't bad

Pretty nice britpop with a slightly fuzzy, almost psychedelic approach. A few of the longer instrumental sections felt a bit aimless, but the songs were generally solid

The way I knew this band would have an Oasis connection from the first second I heard them...I love UK's music output for the most part, but the stuff they were pumping out in the 90's just wasn't really doing it for me. There's nothing inherently wrong with this album per se -- I'd actually say I enjoyed almost all of it. But it's very cut-and-dry, down-the-middle stuff. I don't remember much about it, despite having just listened to it two hours ago. I could give it 4 stars, but I won't. Perfectly fine album. Just not one anyone NEEDS to hear before they die.

More fineness

it's fine. not the worst of the british rock bands we've heard, that's for sure

North Country Boy is great of course, the rest is very standard for 90's britpop

Good vocals, cool beats. Nothing really stands out about this album though. However it is not really my personal style but I did enjoy listening to it. 3 stars.

I suspect if I listened to it a lot I'd like it quite a bit more but, as it is, I just found it good. Get On It was superb though.

A good album, but not a great one - it's consistent most of the way through (but not too samey), there's not an awful song on there and a couple of really good ones, North Country Boy and One To Another. They're better when they sound less like Oasis, How High sounds like a budget Gallagher impression, and it serves to remind you that what they've done doesn't have the same energy as the good Oasis albums. One To Another is definitely one that a lot of the British indie from the mid 00s borrowed from, Kasabian sound just like it. 3/5, missing something that would make them really stand out but a solid Britpop album.

A decent enough Britpop album. Quite groovy. Tim Burton seems to be doing a massive Liam Gallagher impression. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: North Country Boy Date listened: 14/03/23

Trying to be Oasis? It's an alright album.

хороший, ровный альбом некоторые работы очень сочные, динамичные; некоторые слегка затянуты. до 4 не хватило мне общей динамики альбома, крепкие 3+

Добротный бритпоп

Surprising muscular album from the C. (Whose discography I don't know apart from a few singles) This album was marked by the death of the keyboardist during its production. Echoes of classic Stones and Dylan. Decent.

Had never previously heard or heard of them, but found it be moderate Brit pop Oasis rip offs. No single song seemed all that memorable. 3/5

average Britpop

They sound lust like another band I’ve heard…l I won’t say who, but it begins with an “O” and ends in “asis”….. 3/5

Good music to watch trains to.

3 some kinda jangly tunes

Fun, solid.

Not bad but sort of one note. Very much a typical and somewhat decent britpop album.

Another bloody britpop record. Not bad but not amazing. They’re all starting to sound similar.

This is one of those albums that nothing really stands out for me. It almost 'Just is'. Like background music in a grocery store. I'm not even really aware I'm listening to it.

immediately forgettable

Nice (albeit diluted) grooves here. Explains (sort of) the attraction of \"My Beautiful Friend\" (not on this album)

Okay, I guess. Still prefer the debut and early singles.

Beetje generiek, maar werkt op de achtergrond.

A wholly unassuming album. A pleasant little listen, but nothing remarkable about it in my opinion Saved tracks: Tellin’ Stories, Area 51, Rob’s Theme

Ok. Sounds like oasis

This was one of those bands on the periphery of my listening...I knew just enough to know they existed, heard multiple times I should listen to them. I remember hearing "North Country Boy" and again, liked it, but the stand out on this one for me is "How High". They just got lost amongst a lot of higher profile bands, even before I clicked to listen briefly confused them with Good Charlotte. Overall, good album though. 3.5 stars.

If you like Oasis then you'll like Charlatans

With No Shoes- 7 North Country Boy- 6 Tellin' Stories- 7 One to Another- 8 You're A Big Girl Now-8 How Can You Leave Us- 7 Area 51- 5 How high- 8 Only Teethin'- 7 Get it on- 6 Rob's theme- 4

La production est bonne. Quand ça rock, c'est correct, mais ça manque un peu de personnalité. Ça fait penser par moment à The Vines que je trouve plus original.

Some interesting stuff here and there but probably not worth a relisten for me.

3/11, 27%

It’s alright; if Oasis was slightly more interesting and less whiney they’d probably sound a bit like this.

I enjoyed this. Very sad about Rob Collins dying part way through the making of the album. Don't drink and drive kids, and if you do be sure and wear your seatbelt. While I did like this album, it struck me as fairly standard Brit-pop, which is way over-represented on this list. 3 stars.

Generic “no name” brand Oasis. Was okay, didn’t rock my tits off.

I had never heard of the Charlatans before today....they're not bad....not sure it's something I want to hear again....but, not bad.

It was nice to listen to an Oasis cover band in a Monday morning...wait...is this still an Oasis cover? What is this song about? It does not look like an Oasis cover anymore...

just average britpop

76/100: Never heard of The Charlatans before, but I really liked their sound. They sort of gave me an Arctic Monkeys mixed with The Sex Pistols kind of tone. Since I like both of those groups, of course I liked this album. While the sound itself was really cool and definitely fit neatly within my musical interests, I’m not sure how much I’ll revisit this album in the future. It didn’t really stand out to me all that much; however, I’m certainly interested in The Charlatans as a group and will likely explore their discography in the future.

bonus car BO de My Mad Fat Diary

Melodic but forgettable

Such striking similarities to Oasis, which I suppose is Oasis's fault because they came after, and became more successful with a similar sound. I could better hear the differences between the two bands by the end but only sort of. I'll say, I at least I enjoyed it enough that I'm interested to hear their other work.

A bit whinier than your average Britpop. Kind of like sour patch kids for the ears. Not my favorite type of candy, wouldn't want to eat a whole bag all at once, but okay in small doses.

Meh, more standard 90s brit-pop/rock. Really does absolutely nothing for me. Voice was slightly annoying but overall... ok.

good but sounds like oasis and i can’t be fucked

It’s fine. I’m a bit over britpop tho. I don’t have a whole lot to say

yeah. whatever.

decent but lacking memorable tunes

I like the vibe but it's a one-trick pony with no real variety. Madchester and the 90s, Britpop and Alt-rock etc were a great fun time and I'd have this on in the background but not really listen to any of them apart from the hits.

I have one album by The Charlatans. It's called US and US Only, I think it was the release immediately after Tellin Stories which I guess is their moat critically acclaimed album. What listening to Tellin Stories tells me is that I don't really need any other Charlatans albums. Nothing wrong with Tellin Stories it has some fine songs...but nothing anywhere near as strong as Forever from US and US Only. I much prefer US and US Only. 3.5 🌟

Starts off sounding like Oasis' less interesting cousin, but grows into something much more exciting as the album progresses. This could have been an amazing album if more of the first half matched the incredible energy displayed on "One to Another". Thankfully, the instrumentation on the back half of the album really redeemed this one for me, with some really energetic and explosive finales on songs like "How Can You Leave Us" and "Get On It". "Rob's Theme" is an unfortunately boring way to end off the album compared to the far more engaging lead up to it. Standout tracks: "One to Another", "How Can You Leave Us", "How High" and "Get On It"

A mediocre mid-90s British alt rock band that sounds like all the other mediocre mid-90s British alt rock bands. I've already forgotten everything about this album. Best track: How High (I think)

Better than I thought it would be.

Britpop-rock. Ni fu ni fa.

Bien. Pero no me ha encantado

Easy listening, seems like it'd be good for a road trip.

I really feel like britpop has little to offer outside of the big classics (and Doves' Lost Souls). I mean, this one's not bad, it even has some great tracks. At their best, they channel the baggy sound of the Stone Roses. At their worst, they sound like they're aping Oasis, which is something nobody should ever do under any circumstances.

Gave me an Oasis vibe

Some of the songs are catchy (One to Another) and I don't mind the the overall sound but I don't see this LP coming out in 97 making much of a contribution to the alternative rock scene.

Their inspirations are clear. Vocalist sucks, embodying Oasis lazy slurred singing with some Bob Dylan direct spoken word in "How High" and "Get On It." Keyboards reminisce of 60s soul and jazz, particularly the British variety of the Spencer Davis Group. I hear Rolling Stones riffs, as well as some swirly riffs in "With No Shoes" looking back to their Madchester days. There's a lot of diversity, including the acoustic "You're a Big Girl Now", the country-like "North Country Boy", the jazzy "Area 51", and the acid rock "Rob's Theme". The melodies are nice, and I'm a fan of the riffs at times and the keyboards, but unfortunately, nothing grabs my attention. I blame the vocalist, but I noticed in Britpop the instruments serve mostly to back up the vocalist, so there's little to look for until the solos when they're at their most creative. Even the album cover screams boring. Favorites: Tellin Stories, One to Another, How Can You Leave Us, Area 51, How High, Rob's Theme

it sounds like alright britpop but with more rock than some similar groups from the era. Some songs also have interesting instrumentals but thats about it

btec oasis

It’s Brit-pop but doesn’t have enough catchiness to it. Some good songs mostly drowned out by filler after filler bit.

var bra med litt 90tallsmusikk på 18 mai, sjøl om albumet ikkje va sånn superbra

Klonk best goed eigenlijk. Beetje Stones, beetje Oasis. Lekkere vibe.

Huh? Was dit niet gewoon Oasis?

Ik wist niet dat Noel en Liam nog meer broers hadden. Aardig maar totaal niet anders of vernieuwend. Misschien doen ik ze tekort en waren ze er al ver voor Oasis.

Ok album. Didn’t feel like this one broke the mold of the British alternative style. They did what I feel oasis does better. Their songs are enjoyable yet somewhat repetitive. It’s good but nothing special. 5.6/10

Middling brit-pop

Perfectly bland average middle of the road stuff. Never is bad but never really tries.

Propar tunes yeah

Strange mix of britpop tracks and funk instrumentals. Fine overall

I enjoyed it, I'll probably listen to it again. That's all I have to say.

Estilo pop-rock inglés de los 90. Cierto parecido en la voz con Oasis. Un tanto guitarrero. Se deja escuchar, tiene estilo

Pretty average

Pretty standard britpop offering

Perfectly average album. I enjoyed pretty much all the songs but I can't say it left an impression on me

It starts off quite solid then fades away. Fades for a long time. 17 songs man, that turned into a slog.

I liked this album well enough but it isn't too special to me. I likely will not return to any of these songs. My album yesterday was also a Brit-Pop/Rock album and I enjoyed that one significantly more.

Album has that 90s British swagger to it. At least 2 of the members has a cig precariously hanging out of their mouth most of the time. They put more effort into looking like they don't care than you would realize. Only problem is, you realize. It's pretty fuckin obvious. This album has more hooks than other bands of that scene, I feel like. Still a very forgettable album...

Interesting sound, good vibe, but I think there were other albums that came out that year that I would class as more memorable.

Loved.

pretty good. not as weird as a expected, nor as pure 90s as I expected. A nice mix of the two. 3.5

Britpop-rock. Ni fu ni fa.

I think this list is oversaturated with Brit Pop but this was pretty good. Especially liked the Area 51 instrumental

somewhat generic at times. it is not bad per se, just doesn't spark joy. 3.5/5

Look at these serious lookin' fellas. This has a VERY U2 circa POP vibe. I enjoy that vibe, so that's cool. the songs are not as good as any of those, but not bad. Really like the production in Area 51

Rock maar niet mijn favoriet. al kan ik wel de kwaliteit erin herkennen

Good for background music, but I much as a more critical listening experience

24th August 2021 Listened on the living room speaker while working. Quiet day. Enjoyed this bit of alternative brit pop, slots right in to the time and sound.

Typical 90s rock vibe!

Again, nothing spoke to me, not dreadful, listenable, but nothing stood out. Maybe I need to listen to these albums with a little more concentration, less I risk never revisiting them

Un bon album dans le genre, mais sonne un peu generique de la pop rock uk de ces annees la. Style Oasis. J’aime quand meme . 3.75

Poor man's Oasis. It was ok

Good stuff. I had never heard of The Charlatans, but they immediately reminded me of Oasis (or maybe it's Oasis that sounds like them... not sure because these guys never made it big in the US).

Better than I remembered. I'd definitely heard 1 or 2 other albums by them that were piss weak

Perfectly decent, if unexciting British Indie.

me gustó, pero me resulto medio monotono, lo anoté para escuchar en agosto, no se si lo dejaré

mais um indie conhecido sem incomodar ou empolgar.

Not sure i'm going to listen to this one again. Nice rock, but a little repetetive for my tastes. maybe a lot of people have copied their style which is why I tire of the music so fast.

Ok, not as good as I remember, couple of decent tracks but that's it.

Very reminiscent of Kasabian.

Decent. Polished in places and rugged in others. Not very memorable for my taste though.

Reminds me of Oasis, but without the catchy songs.

Liked it

solid sound, didn't sound too distinctive to me.

Always enjoyed listening to and watching The Charlatans. Fairly consistent Stones-style rock n roll (appropriate for Beggars Banquet label!). Maybe not as good as The Charlatans eponymous album or New Order-sounding You Cross My Path.

First thought was that Oasis ripped these guys off 😂 Not really my bag though, never been mad for this era of British indie rock. Was gonna give it a 2 but I've gone for 3 cos you can tell it inspired oasis etc

They told an alright story.

awesome 90s britpop - love it

in one ear and out the other. perfectly fine lite alt rock.

McDowells

Cool brit pop record with beautiful melodies and some Madchester vibes. Not amazing though

Catchy/poppy alt rock with a 90s sound. Some decent guitar moments and riffs. None of it is life changing great, but overall it's pretty cool. Some electronic sounds too.

I'm so glad this forced me to revisit this. It's been a long time and I never really spend much time with them. After listening, it's probably because they have a similar sound to Oasis, who I was never a big fan of. That said, they both write catchy tunes. Decent album. YouTube gave me the Stone Roses right after, which reminded me why I'm giving this a 3.

Not bat but also quite forgettable

Not on Apple music

Not bad. Not bad at all.

not too shabs

2nd tier Oasis sound

Fine record. I didn't want to turn it off, so at least there's that.

It was pretty okay

There was that one Rolling Stones record review that said all of Led Zeppelin's blues covers other than When the Levee Breaks sound bizarre parodies... The vocals on some of these tracks sound like bizarre parodies of Pop. The rest of it just sounds like big standard pop to my ears. What's alternative about it, other than the haircuts? Decent music.

Actually a really nice sound-like a clean Levellers. I like a lot of these songs, might add to library, but not very memorable past the first listen.

sounds like Oasis!

Fun album. First time listebjbg

Still good

Set the basis for much of the brit punk revival

good but spotify only had like 3 songs

The Oasis comparison hit me from the first chord. It's not bad, I just couldn't really escape that initial impression. Favorite tracks: "Get On It", "One to Another"

Tempted to give 4 stars, but I think I have to deduct at least half a star because this band is a fairly blatant copycat of Oasis. The music isn't awful though.

Bof not my style

I had to remind myself multiple times that I wasn’t listening to Oasis. It felt very similar though I’m not sure how copied or inspired who. Obviously, Oasis has had more impact on music than these guys. Compared to Oasis I missed any type of real hit. Even their most popular song sounded quite boring to me. Then again I’m not a big fan of Oasis either. Strong 2, weak 3 territory.

Its very much rooted in the 90s in style, but it's rather boring.

So Brit pop is just bands trying to be Oasis. I’ve never been much of an oasis fan, so knockoff oasis is pretty boring to me.

Man, a lot of Brit Pop really has a playbook and a uniform sound. Could have been any one of 6 or 7 bands.

Nothing to listen again to me. Ok but not my jamz.

Strong sense of the Manc sound even through they were a little distant from it. It was ok but I wouldn't have included it in a list to hear before I die

First time I’ve ever heard of this band. The album was okay, yet forgettable. They sound like every other Brit rock band of the time.

It's ok

Never heard of the band but knew immediately they were from the UK. Generic Oasis

Another britpop record. It's okay, just kind of boring. Favourite Track(s): One To Another Least Favourite Track(s): With No Shoes, Rob's Theme

More folks that I’m sure it would be a pleasure to know.

I'm finding it hard to write anything here. This album was entirely forgettable. Nothing stood out to me. It wasn't actively bad, but just nothing compared to some of the great albums on this list.

not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue

Totally bland. Utterly unremarkable. I can't even bring myself to give it a 1 because at least 1-star reviews were indicative of strong feelings. My strongest feeling from this is just being perplexed how it made this list to begin with. I could maybe see this as a foundational album if it came out in the very early 90s. But 97? Way too late for this.

A lot of British people on this website and on the subreddit will get really mad if we make fun of the awful Britpop that infests this list, but honestly, we probably don’t make fun of it enough. This is so dire. Why is it here? Answers the question “What if The Stone Roses sucked?”

The bristsh are at it again. A bit catchy, but overall not great.

Boring and British in an oasis kind of way

This came out in 1997… I was 17 and was deep into music and these guys didn’t even blip on my radar… and good… sooo, as the kids say, mid. 2.4

I knew I wouldn’t particularly like this when it popped up as I’ve never liked The Charlatans. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it either.

Aika mitäänsanomaton aikatyyliin sopiva boooring... mut hyvin soitettu kai

Listened Before? N If the word "meh" was a person, and formed a band, and recorded an album... this would be what it would sound like. Even the dudes on the cover embody the meh-ness here. This gets a 2/5 as an album and a 5/5 as an exhibit in boring. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: One To Another

Sorry to my UK people out there reading this, but I hate Brit-Pop. This is what I’m getting out from listening to so many Brit pop bands from this list. It’s boring, lifeless, soul-less, uninteresting, and just plain bad.

It's okay, songs get a bit monotonous. I did like the nod to the riff from "Fearless" in "Here Comes A Soul Saver". A lot of these songs sound like a Pepsi commercial.

/sees album cover "Oh boy, what kinda British bullshit is this?" Here's the thing: If I want to listen to something that sounds like Oasis, I'll just listen to Oasis. I don't know enough Britpop history to know whether it's fair to accuse these guys are being derivative. For all I know, they invented this style. But the album *sounds* like an incredibly derivative, pale imitation of Oasis. Now, to be fair, I love Oasis, so listening to off-brand, cereal-in-a-plastic-bag Oasis isn't *awful*, but it's not good by any means. Two things I'll note. First, "Area 51" was a great track, sounded like it could've been something used in a Guy Ritchie movie montage (complementary), and for all I know it actually was. What distinguishes that song? NO GODDAMN SINGING. Second, "How High" wasn't terrible, but there are already 3 songs called "How High" by Method Man and Redman that I'd prefer, so these blokes can get those words out of their goddamn mouths.

More generic, non-descript Brit-Pop.

This is just music you know it’s just average kind of like music that you hear and don’t remember it cause it’s what everything sounds like

I dislike Oasis profoundly. This has the same sort of needless self-affirming swagger, but, at least the music is marginally better. I find it sort of dick-less and and I feel like the album cover art sums up what is inside the tin. \

Lackluster vocals let this fade into the background which wasn’t the worst thing.

Incredibly generic britpop. Why would I listen to this when I could just listen to the Stone Roses? Some OK tunes on this but most of this fell pretty flat for me.

Oasis but worse?

Sounds like four british boys with identical haircuts and outfits in a white void

Yet another subpar Britpop album. Don’t care for this at all. Uninspired Oasis knockoff.

Another bland Britpop. The music is alright, but it had absolutely no impact on me. I can barely remember a thing about this album right after finishing it Favorite Track - With No Shoes Least Favorite Track - Rob's Theme ⭐️⭐️

More Brit pop/rock. Inferior version of Oasis.

Again very much a lesser Britpop band. Fairly boring and validates my decision to fast forward through them on Jools Holland over the years.

Wait ... are these the cousins of Oasis!? More 90s recycled drek!

Me sonó a pop rock, con algunos toques estilo Oasis.

Fauxasis, ongeïnspireerd en beter door anderen

A pretty disappointing set of Oasis b-sides. The Charlatans are at their best when they're working a funky Madchester organ groove, so I guess it makes sense this is their first album after their keyboardist died. Take it off the list, add Some Friendly.

Boring

They sound comfortable jumping on the britpop train but it’s bland. I don’t like this even as much as sneered-at landfill britpop like Shed Seven’s Maximum High. Indie disco standout is One To Another

A bit too much Britpop for me.

This was tough to get through. Value brand Oasis.

Fake Oasis

You wouldn't be surprised to know that these guys were the supporting act for Oasis. This album is just an inoffensive Britpop album that is fine, but nothing particularly special or genre-defining.

This isn't a bad album, but it's not really remarkable in any way; it's just sort of there. It all sounds like stuff we've heard before from more talented artists only blander. The vibes are alright so I guess it's passable background music but there's very little to grab your attention here; just more upbeat pop rock with nothing to say. It's a bit of a shame that the author of the list's clear anglocentrism led to him including serviceable but not particularly noteworthy or impactful albums like this over more interesting left field picks. It is what it is though.

There's just no justification for two Charlatans albums on a list like this, and my choice is easily Some Friendly. By 1997 the band is technically improved. And they are recorded beautifully; the tracks are clear and lush. But, to my ears, this creates problems. 1) The lead instrument - the centerpiece of the sound - is not good. Technically, lyrically, and for me stylistically, Burgiss' significant musical weakness is exposed by the improvement everywhere around him. This exposure is heightened by the lack of Rob Collins' insistent Hammond blasts. The best parts of this album are instrumental. 2) Like many bands, as they got technically better, they accidentally swept away the pixie dust. There was something magical in the shambolic we're-not-exactly-sure-what-we're-doing-but-we're-going-for-it spirit that imbued Some Friendly. Here, by contrast, they sound like they're clenched tight - being very careful to play everything as well as they can. Ironically, something special goes missing. And, like I mentioned, someone special and really important to the overall vibe, WAS missing.

It sounds nice on the surface, but I have played it 4 times and hardly even noticed. No substance, nothing special, just quality mimicking.

I didn’t realize how many of these 90s Britpop rock bands there were. I always just thought it was Oasis. It certainly sounds very much like a take on Oasis. Early on and it’s fine. This kind of music is always an easy listen and pleasant, but sometimes struggles to find anything distinct about it. There’s a generic quality to it. But it’s still catchy at times and there’s some good songs. I think it kind of slows down after the first few songs as it’s hard to hear much variety in it. Nothing is really a banger type song that grabs your attention, even if it’s all fine. I think the first 4 tracks are the best, and then I liked Only Teethin on the back half of the album. I don’t dislike any of this, but it seems generic so I think I’ll go a 2. Debating up to a 3 because it’s all just fine. But not sure it deserves a spot on a list like this.

2/5. Though I agree that Brit-Pop is a bit over-represented on the 1,001 albums list, I do also believe that people tend to be way too harsh on the Brit-Pop albums on here as a result of that. A lot of great albums did come from that movement. This Charlatans album is not one of them. It feels like a Brit-pop album designed through a paint by the numbers book. Also not helping things is the vocals which are at the best of times just okay and at the worst actively grating. I didn’t hate it enough for a 1 star, but there really isn’t anything here I’d see myself returning to.

I got nothing out of this album

This was so disappointing. The lyrics are nonsensical at times, the vocals are grating, some of the songs are too long, the music is bland and even they try to inject a bit of energy, the whole vibe just feels cringy. Their first album was decent and the second album (Between 10th and 11th) is very good. Much better than this reductive drivel. It’s not complete rubbish and it’s not actively irritating, but they have done so much better than this.

Pretty bland, inoffensive Britpop. Nothing special.

1. Never heard of any of this at all. Okay, we're off too a good start. Okay this is an oasis knock off god bless but we know who did it better.I mean i like it, but only cuz it sounds like oasis. Is this what all rock bands from the uk sounded like in the 90s? I have no idea. 2. yeah, this one's nice. 3. this one's nice too 4. Yeah i'm sorry but i'd rather just be listening to oasis. 5. God forgive me but i think im just gonna give up and go listen to oasis.

This is like being a British school kid at the start of the soccer World Cup. David Beckham is at the peak of his powers and he has a sweet mohawk hairdo. You get the same cut, thinking you’ll stun everyone at school with how cool you are. However you get to school the next day and everyone has the same haircut. Because you’re English, you whinge about it. And England loses the World Cup too, because they suck.

This list has introduced me to so many good Brit-rock groups, that I can correctly identify this group as average at best.

Terrible. Not a catchy song in the bunch. Uninspired and unoriginal. They sound like Oasis wannabe's, even though they came first. 1.5

An enjoyable 2.5 star kind of thing

Look, this album is absolutely fine. There’s very little wrong with it. It was big at the time. I have no beef with The Charlatans… but this being an album I should listen to BEFORE I DIE? 🥴

It gets an extra star because I like One to Another. Everything else was bland.

Groupe inconnu. =>2/5

Sounds like a bad mix of oasis and the stone Roses. The vocals of the singer really started to wear on me, combined with the uninspiring music and lyrics the total package became very bland and forgettable.

It's not bad, but I don't think I really needed to listen to this. Very bland pop rock

North Country Boy and How High are the stand out songs here but the rest is all... a bit flat.

It's nice enough. But it really sounds like everything else.

I genuinely don't understand why this is here. I guess some of the melodies are nice but it feels like music I'd hear at a Greene King.

Unremarkable. Not sure why this was included. Already forgot most of it.

Just another boring Britpop band!

I’m just gonna protest the britpop slop that’s on this list. This is just a shittier version of an Oasis record. Lazy 2

Got PTSD waiting for Champagne Supernova. The Rose Bowl can go to hell

Some iconic songs on there from my youth, but stepping back from the nostalgia it's a pretty average rock album.

Second to third line players, trying hard but not making a difference

I’m a big Britpop fan but have never enjoyed the Charlatans. This time was no different. Their music just washes past me and I find nothing to latch on to. The magic from the 60s they are trying to replicate gets lost in translation while I find the other Britpop giants are able to do it successfully. Terrible what they had to go through though behind the scenes. Rating: 2.3

Less good Oasis

off brand oasis

this felt very late 90s/early 2000s movie soundtrack like. personally, i like this kind of music, however, this album didn't offer me anything new or amusing and i'll probably forget about it tommorrow. it wasn't bad though, just nothing influential in my opinion

I had listened to several albums by this band many years ago, and I think it is telling that I didn’t remember any songs. This is bland, and that’s coming from someone who generally likes britpop. I guess I should revisit a couple of their other albums to see if anything reminds me of why I listened to them in the first place, but it’s not looking promising

I can see myself walking out of a theatre during the credits of a mediocre British romcom while this music plays. The people in front of you aren't moving fast enough and you swear that the diet coke the person three seats down from you spilled is starting to seep into your shoes

Shite Oaais copycats

++: One to Another, Get on It +: With No Shoes, How Can You Leave Us, Only Teethin', Rob's Theme +-: North Country Boy, Tellin' Stories, You're a Big Girl Now, Area 51, How High 4,6/10

Boooring........

It's fine, I guess? I'm just really really bored
