Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Well, somebody listened The Roses' second album + Oasis: they learned their lessons well, but not the most original sound
Pretty safe music. Sounds like discount Oasis (makes sense, since it's from the same era and genre). The album plays it quite safe to the point where it's almost a bit generic. OK album, but not one I'd play again soon. 5 / 10.
I don't really like Britpop
Generic
just sounds mildly irritating, like a mosquito I don't want it and it sounds the same almost always
171 Es como la versión acuenta de oasis, y no me gusta oasis. Tuvo sus momentos loquillos, pero... meh? Me hace pensar en el sesgo de esta lista una vez más.
It is perhaps uncharitable but my feelings about the Charlatans have not changed much since their existence in the 90s - I always felt they were a poor mans Oasis mixed with Stone Roses - all that media-created "baggy" thing ?? It's palatable but uninspiring.
Perfectly acceptable britpop that isn’t overwhelmingly good or notable. I liked some stuff, but mostly it just flowed through like corn or lettuce. Anyway on to the next one.
A generic British rock band/Oasis clone. It didn't sound terrible, just kind of whatever.
I liked the spacey instrumental songs Area 51 and Rob’s Theme. Otherwise pretty boring britpop. Lacks any edginess and the vocalist has a somewhat nasally voice with limited range and poor dynamics. Decent musicianship but nothing exceptional. Another “why is this on the list?” album.
crap
War nett. Passte, war aber auch nichts besonders tolles.
(insert obscure British indie rock band here) sounds just like (insert obscure British indie rock band here)
Unfortunately not all britpop is as good as Pulp.
60's inspired britpop album. The vocals are a bit too nasally for me and often sound like the singer is doing a Bob Dylan impression (particularly on Get On It). My favourite track was the instrumental Area 51, which has a nice rhythm and psychedelic guitars + keyboard. Not bad but not very memorable.
Is this an oasis b side album? I liked the instrumental.
These guys didn’t even try to hide how badly they were ripping off Oasis.
Getting some Britpop fatigue here. This was just OK.
It wasn't bad, just a bit Oasis-at-home
A Charlatan is something like a fraud or an imposter. These guys are Oasis impersonators, but they're not as good. I don't even like Oasis. They're the most overrated band in music history. The Charlatans take some creative side steps that Oasis would never have, so that's in their favor. Favorite song: how can you leave us.
This largely felt like second rate Britpop; a subgenre that I already don't hold the greatest level of affection for. The vocals are a clear attempt at aping Liam Gallagher / Richard Ashcroft and really began to grate before too long. Instrumentally, it threatens to become mildly interesting when it plumps for that swirling, loosely psychedelic style of riffage, however whilst sounding like it's being played in your next door neighbour's bedroom. "One to Another" was the only real standout, vaguely encroaching into stoner rock territories.
Didn’t enjoy this very much.
3 Didn’t finish it I dunno why it’s a 3 out of 10 but it is
Didn't really get excited about this one in any way
Well, they were definitely influential on Oasis...so that's something?
obligatory oasis mention
I was indifferent to this when it was out. Indifferent now too. Some good, some bad. Would I listen to it again? Probably not. Why? Because the 90s were generally a shit time for British music.
Like Oasis light, which is not really worth it.
Aggressively British.
Luke warm Brit rock. Tellin' Stories told me nothing interesting and I don't know why it made the list. Other bands from this 90s genre did it better. 2nd half of the album was a little more experimental and engaging. Overall, I was bored and drifted away from the music. The band name is fitting...1.82 stars.
Nothing really stands about this record to me. Sounds kinda like cookie cutter Britpop. Maybe it’s better than I’m giving it credit for on one listen but I feel fairly safe saying it’s not for me
is_this_oasis.gif
Nothing wrong with this really at all, a few nice songs, but I had to go back to my Definitely Maybe review to make sure I rated this less than that. Oasis is the first touchpoint that clearly came to mind - although it's maybe not totally fair to call them a knockoff as they pre-dated Noel and Liam, but this just felt like pretty paint-by-numbers Britpop. It did have some keyboards, though, so maybe Oasis with Organs? Pretty forgettable in the end.
please sir, may I have some less? This is just a drop in a bucket of Brit rock that we've been given so far. its fine for what it is, but doesnt seem to stand out. competently made, but sounds like watered down U2 and Blur. Also just a little too on the whiny side.
So boring. So unoriginal. We’ve gotten this album a dozen times by a dozen different UK lads. Also the guy on the bottom right of the album cover has one of the most punchable faces I’ve ever seen
There was this time in the 1990s when there were too many bands that all sounded too similar. Oasis seems to have been the one that survived, but let's not forget The Charlatans (and Blur, The Verve, Suede, The Stone Roses, etc...) There was no OG in this mix, they all bounced stuff off each other, I don't give any of the bands particular credit or blame or whatever. But 90s Britpop definitely had a particular sound. On to this album. I had never heard any of these songs before (but I remember some of their singles). None of these songs were particularly memorable for me, it evoked the feeling of the time but I was not wowed.
Boooooooring
It's ok. Feel like there are better British bands of that time.
kanske bara är så att jag har svårt för brit-pop. gillar inte riktigt ljudlandskapen eller egentligen hur något av instumenten låter. dessutom låter varje sångare som att de bara klagar över att de fick ärtor till maten, extra mycket sånt i det här
Mid-to-not-good Brit pop.
★★ Barely.
First time listening So it's clearly got that 90s British bubble gum pop sound with the typical nasally 90s British bubble gum pop vocals. The thing I didn't expect is how much they tried to infuse other musical genres into this. At times, they tried to sound heavier. At times, they tried to have a hip hop sound. At times, they tried to sound like a jam band. At times, they tried to sound funky. It was kind of a mess. At that's on top of being firmly from a genre I already don't really like. A couple good songs, but not something I got into or want to come back to. Best songs: You're a Big Girl Now, Get on It
Overall: 4/10 Thrift store Oasis with annoying vocals. There were a couple good songs on here but it mostly sounded derivative and bland. Big pass for me. Fav Song: You're a Big Girl Now
Really boring album, the La’s did a much better job and oasis brought it to the masses. Lump it together with all the other 90s Manchester acts
Just ok, nothing to get excited about on this one
Not bad. But kind of sounds like off brand oasis. Not a lot of notable songs.
I have no idea why this album is on this list. Seriously, it sounds like yet another boring 90's Oasis-soundalike band. How many of these groups did the UK pump out and why do we have to listen to all of them on this list? 2 /5 stars because it's better than Krautrock.
Utterly forgettable
Finding it hard to remember anything about this album.
This was hard to tell. I liked some and didn't like some. Just when I thought I'd give up on it, they come with a pretty good song. It's almost like two bands here. so I don't know. May have to check out some of their other stuff ... later.
very generic 90s rock. feel like the 90s was either hit or or miss when it came to rock. Sounds like a B-version of another 90s band.
I did not enjoy that, no I did not.
Not very memorable, but not unpleasant.
90's Brit Pop Rock in the same veins as Oasis, The Verve, Blur. But - it ain't oasis...
One of many 90s brit pop bands that sound like an Oasis knock off.
Generic 90s Brit-Pop-Rock. It's fine, but not anything I need to listen to over and over. Best Songs: One to Another, How High Worst Songs: Area 51
I’m not convinced the author himself has listened to all of these himself. This sounds like AI generated oasis. It’s not TERRIBLE, but that’s the highest praise I can muster.
Yet another very generic british pop-rock album, soooo many of these on this list. Everything blends together into one long medley.
Ok listen but nothing groundbreaking. Pretty generic.
Le Premier Bonheur du Jour SLAPS HARD
2 feels harsh but 3 feels like i might listen to it again which is simply not the case
This is so mediocre. His voice doesn’t help.
Temu oasis
It's OK, but not quite doing it for me.
I’m fascinated to see this album on here. If this second-tier Britpop album made it, what else is on here? Will we get some Supergrass or Super Furry Animals? How far does this go? Maybe my girl Lauren Laverne’s band, Kenickie? Echobelly? Ocean Colour Scene? Surely not Menswear, right? Right??! So, Britpop… I wasn’t there, I’m not an expert, but I do spend a lot of time thinking about it. Plus, I literally just went to see Pulp the other night. I’m endlessly interested in this strange cultural phenomenon that occurred during my lifetime but I was unaware of until years later. Britpop was an era, a cultural force, and as the movement became more reflexive, an attitude and a sensibility co-opted by corporations and politicians. But I still don’t think it’s a discernible subgenre like grunge or dream pop. You cannot tell me that musically, the disco art rock of Pulp is operating in the same micro-territory as the glam arena rock/post-punk fusion of Manic Street Preachers. Attempts to define the sound of Britpop stretch the aesthetic boundaries so far that any UK alt-rock guitar band that released an album in the 90s gets folded into the morass of “Britpop.” Even Radiohead! Please. Speaking of which, about 10 years ago, I undertook and then abandoned a personal project to listen to every one of Pitchfork’s 50 Best Britpop Albums from 50 to 1. I think I got to around number 42 (Ocean Colour Scene - Moseley Shoals) before abandoning the project. Because I started from the bottom, I encountered a lot of mediocre music. A few great singles to be sure, but none of the albums were changing my life. Pitchfork’s list is clearly suspect, because they rank The Bends as the #3 Britpop album, which is patently ridiculous. Just because it was released in 1995 doesn’t make it Britpop. If you can say anything about the supposed sound of Britpop, it’s that it’s actively Not Grunge. Radiohead were clearly influenced by grunge and definitely didn’t limit their influences to the homeland. Other common musical threads you can try to grasp in Britpop-era music is unobscured British accents, hyper-local references, high energy, and a “bright” sound. There’s nothing specifically “British” about The Bends, I wouldn’t call it high energy aside from a few tracks (I’d call Radiohead many things but “energetic” is not one of them), the band actively disdained Britpop, and did everything they could to stay away from it. Anyway… the completionist in me does want to go back and listen to the rest of the albums on the list, if only to unearth a few hidden gems. But at the end of day, the cultural phenomenon of Britpop is far more interesting to me than the music. The best of the Britpop era, Blur and Pulp, is among my favourite music (honourable mention to Suede and Elastica). The rest… meh. Now, onto this Charlatans album (ranked #29 on Pitchfork’s list, by the way)… there’s a heavy dose of Madchester going on here. This sounds like Happy Mondays as sung by Liam Gallagher. Which makes sense because the Charlatans were an OG Madchester band that rebranded in the mid-90s as Britpop. All I can hear is inferior Primal Scream and inferior Oasis. And there’s a random Dylan-sounding song in there? This album is very mid. Highlight: One to Another gets played on medium rotation on 6Music, and it’s decently fun.
I couldn't help but wonder while listening to this album: Who do The Charlatans know in the music criticism community? Did one of the members have a second career after the band was done as an influential critic? Maybe one of their parents is a critic? If the answer to these questions is no-one, no and no, then I am baffled. There must be a strange circumstance that has lead to this album being included on this list, because it sure isn't the music. Basically Tellin' Stories is just shitty Oasis mashed together with shitty Stone Roses. They are ripping off both bands aggressively and it's painfully mid. I see no reason this album should be on this list. They aren't adding anything to the brit pop sound. It's borderline plagiarism. I feel nothing for this album other than a desire to listen to that Stone Roses debut... what a great album. The nicest thing I can say is that the Area 51 instrumental track is kinda cool and psychedelic... i guess it's ok. No bland lyrics ruining the song which is good. In general the back half of the albums shifts more towards the stone roses (the first half of the album is more oasis), and i prefer stone roses over oasis, so that's nice? That's all I got. it's a bland 2 for sure.
Oasis copy
not for me!
Was every band from England trying to be Oasis around this time? Charlatans = Temu Oasis
This band has successfully lived up to its name.
If you look up boring whiny Brit Rock in the dictionary you'll see a picture of Oasis. In the footnotes, you'll notice the words "see also - The Charlatans". Just an uninspiring collection of similar songs, though one day during recording someone pulled out a harmonica. Nothing worth the price of admission here.
You can really tell that the list has too much of a slant towards Britpop. So many bands that were one hit wonders in the US are presented here as if they were more well-known. This is more of that 90s era Britpop/alternative - like “we have Oasis as home.” A tad on the generic side but overall decent album that I enjoyed. 2.5⭐️
Big guitars, a dash of psychedelia, and the Britpop nasal whine. Nothing really stands out. Perfectly adequate, I guess.
Britpop sucks. C-Tier Britpop is even worse.
Goddamn there is so much mediocre Brit-Pop on this list. 2/5
Nice listening but to my ear it sounds like we have Oasis at home. Fav songs: Rob's Theme
I’m not even 200 albums in and am already sick of the ‘90s Britpop on the list. This was a 3 for me for the first half. I didn’t mind the swirling rock with throwbacks to ‘60s pop and psychedelia. But the singer has an annoying voice, the songs bores me, and it wore out its welcome by the back half.
Good britpop album, started liking this band recently. Not 100% sure why this was included in the book and I'm sure its not going to be to everyone's liking. It's what the Stone Roses could have been if they kept making music.
An even midder Oasis rip off. If it was possible. 2 Stars.
eh
Warmed over oasis
how are albums like this on this list? I'm starting to think I should swap my 1 and 2 stars ratings, at least the 1s have been spectacularly bad, but albums like this are unremarkable in every way.
Oasis without the hits.
Bargain basement Oasis. Not entirely unpleasant of a listen but has no business on this list.
Inoffensive, but very samey. Not particularly for me.
Not my favorite record at all. Never liked these guys
Store brand britpop from the freezer section. The best bits sound like the verve with big swirling psychedelic feel and wah wah guitars, sometimes they lean more oasis with fizzy overdriven guitars and a snarling vocal, some of it has a bit of left over warmed up baggy swagger. It's all pretty decent but non descript, great filler if you're trying to pad out side b of a too long 90s 90s UK mix tape.
Boring AF
Trash, derivative, imitative. 2/5
Not bad, you can hear the Oasis influence. A couple catchier songs but mostly just alright.
I think I just don’t like britpop. This album is annoying as fuck. I don’t like the 90s production and the vocals are a huge turnoff for me. Not a fan.
A poor mans Oasis
Decent as background music, barely noticed it being on. Quite liked With No Shoes and One to Another, but the rest was lower-end britpop stuff. Not noteworthy of being on this list.
Meh la verdad, tienen onda pero no me genero nada sobresaliente
Muy wonderwall, musicalmente no me parece malo pero al no ser algo que me guste mucho me emboló
Just an Oasis/Blur/Pulp B-Sides album really
Meh, boring britpop that sounds okay to be played on the radio. Nothing worthwile to actually come back to.
endnu en billig oasis og jeg er ikke engang særlig stor fan af oasis. utrolig generøst at den kommer over 1 herfra
Britpop without the bangers
Oasis on Temu
Sounded like a worse oasis to me.
Reminds me of Oasis. New to me. Not bad, just not my cuppa tea. 2.5 stars
charlatan (n.), sense 2: A person who falsely claims or pretends to have knowledge or skill in some area, usually for personal gain; a person who pretends to be something he or she is not; an impostor, a pretender, a fraud; a quack. That is the Oxford Dictionary's second definition of the word "charlatan." Not exactly something you want to call yourself, right? Well, from my perception, it wouldn't be exactly wrong for these guys to call themselves the Charlatans seeing as they're clearly pretending to be a better band than they really are. That better band, by the way, happens to exist. It's Oasis. These guys are just Diet Oasis. That's not just my take. This website's top key word in the reviews for Tellin' Stories by the Charlatans is "oasis." It's not just me! So, when you already have 2 Oasis albums on the list, which is absolutely warranted, why should anyone care to bother with the Charlatans? They do nothing special. The instrumentation? Decent. Not outstanding, but not objectively bad. The singing? Not a fan. The fact that I saw a review for this album say that "Area 51," an instrumental track, is the album's best song says a lot. The writing? Fine. I guess these guys had a bit of a tragedy happen during recording regarding their keyboardist dying in a car crash while drunk. I guess it's a tragedy then... a tragedy that this band had a member who was dumb enough to drive drunk and not wear a seatbelt. You want to know something else that I don't like? You know, other than drunk drivers? This album's production. It's too murky. I didn't enjoy it. Admittedly, this album isn't terrible. Nothing hurts to listen to and everything works well enough to produce music that could be enjoyable to someone. That someone's not me though. I just think that an album as unoriginal as this isn't totally justified as an inclusion on a list called "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die." Really showing that 90s/2000s UK bias there, eh Robert? I don't hate this album, but I don't think I could care less if I tried. This review was weirdly negative. I don't even feel that negative about the album. I just don't care about it. It's generic. Not awful, but not inspiring in any form of the word. High 2/5.
Didn't know these guys, apparently it's a British thing. Not bad, not great.
Never in a million, billion years have I heard of The Charlatans, though I like to think I have this recommendation on good authority. Guess I should just hop into it rather than meandering any longer. Not my deal. This album is very of-the-time, though I don’t think it does anything to differentiate itself from other competitor bands. I also don’t think the sound of this album is timeless or aesthetically appealing, either. In any case, there could be worse albums that don’t appeal to me. With No Shoes is familiar - I’m confident I’ve heard it before. I like the late 90s rock sound and all of the guitar reverb. How High is another vaguely familiar track, though I’m undecided on whether I’ve heard it before. Regardless, I enjoy the restless energy of the track and how the verses keep adding pressure to the song. At this point I’d check the book to see whether I agree with this album being in there, though for whatever reason Tellin' Stories isn’t in my first edition copy. Strange. It must have been added to a later edition of the book. Wikipedia says that this album was critically lauded and sold well, being seen as a stylistic and tonal shift for the band. It’s also regarded as one of the better Britpop releases. Eh. I think Britpop is already very well represented on the list, so I think this could do with a snub. In place of this album, I humbly submit Manamoon by Serani Poji for inclusion on the list.
I remember getting The Charlatan's pushed on me in the late 90's. "Just Lookin'" was on a ton of compilation cd's at the time, and "The Only One I Know" put them on the map years earlier. I liked their sound to an extent but was never blown away with their body of work. They were Oasis before people was aware of Oasis. "North Country Boy" is a prime example of that, it's a pretty good song but not memorable. "One To Another" was the hit on this album, again ok but if I never heard it again I'd be just fine. I enjoyed the instrumental "Area 51" the most. Decent pop but vanilla in my book, nothing that stands out, nothing groundbreaking, no US hits you'd hear on the radio today. Missed the mark to make the Top 1001 in my opinion. 2 stars PS - they have better albums!
It sounds like minor Oasis. I like Oasis a lot, so that isn't necessarily a bad thing. But why listen to the Charlatans at all in that case? (I know the perception about Oasis and the Beatles, so you can also choose to extend this same question one level up if you'd like.)
Eh just kind of boring to be honest. Alright background music, but nothing special. 2/5 stars.
Temu Oasis
Unmemorable. A bit of a whinier oasis. Just fairly bland.
Really boring and uninspired oasis rip offs. 5/10 Favourite: None Least Favourite: Only Teethin'
First half was nice than I got tired of it Just like life
It's alright kind of generic pop music. Nothing really stood out and I pretty much forgot the album a few minutes after listening. This one is an easy skip for me, your mileage may vary.
Muy generico
Meh. Average brit rock nothing exceptional
Necesito Zzzz más grandes Nota: 2.3
A dull, uninspired effort.
Aggressively mediocre and generic. Will never be listening to this again.
27 maj Då kör vi, känns redan på första låten mer lovande än dem förra? Tellin' Stories är bra? How can you leave us svängig!! How High ganska bra Only Teethin fuckar jag med. Omslaget är ganska nice ska inte ljuga. Uppskattade faktiskt det här albumet, flera låtar in på listan. 3/10
Decent fare but nothing more. Like One to Another, thought it was an earlier song of theirs. Am I deducting a point for having the temerity to follow DSOTM? Probably...
What’s the Story, Morning Glory if it sucked.
On the back of an opening slot of the biggest UK gigs of the 90s(Oasis at Knebworth) and after loosing their keyboard player The charlatans released their most successful commercially speaking album. Is it good? I don't think so. The two instrumentals were the highlight of the album, can't stand Tim's voice, sorry.
Sinänsä ihan mukavaa soittelua, mutta alkoi kyllä toistaa itseään hyvin nopeasti. Taustamusiikkina menee.
Aika tasapaksua ja eikä mitään fiiliksiä herättävää oasis kopiointi yritystä.
With every Britpop album this list decides to throw at me, I become increasingly convinced that that one 'Elastica' album will be the only one that'll ever resonate with me. 'Cause this is just another in a long list of forgettable '90s Britpop records. I'll say the production is a bit more varied here, a bit funkier and less concerned with being fuzzy and "90s" - I really liked when the organ leads out that tighter groove on 'Only Teething', for example. And certain songs like 'With No Shoes', You're a Big Girl Now', and 'How Can You Leave Us' were actually pretty good. But for every good song, there are like two yawn-inducing ones. Why does this vocal style make everything sound so bland and lifeless? I'll never know...why do the vocals on all these albums sound so alike? I don't know...what is it about samey Britpop melodies that annoy me so much? I don't know. I just don't get it!
Baffling inclusion. Run of the mill brit-pop is very much something that people can die without encountering.
basic rock, not that exciting
This wants what the first two Oasis albums have.
Oasis für Arme. Gehört, finde ich, nicht auf diese Liste.
The funniest album listen I’ve had all year. Telling Stories plays like the result of someone hearing that Oasis were derivative of The Beatles and deciding to push the concept to absurd extremes: “You call that derivative? Hold my beer.” The vocals swagger like a Liam Gallagher AI model trained exclusively on pub fights, while the songs sound like they were composed for a made-for-TV Oasis biopic that couldn’t afford the rights to the real songs. It's britpop cosplay — confident, clueless, and kind of amazing in its commitment. Charlatans indeed!
It was OK. 2/5
like blink 183. IDK. 2 or 3? Their sound is tinny and weak.
Very of-the period sounds; informed by the psychedelia of "baggy" and Madchester acts like Primal Scream, with the same admiration for the Beatles as Oasis. Most of the album plays boring, mid-tempo pop-rock songs in that vein. When they do stray from this formula, there are mixed results. From least to greats: there's a hilarious attempts at a Bob Dylan-esque song ("Get On It") that devolves into a jam and then cacophonous noise, the mostly acoustic and surprisingly affecting "You're a Big Girl Now", "One To Another" which finds the band adding more distortion and maybe doing a U2 homage, and finally, my favorite the slinky, funky instrumental track "Rob's Theme". The album is not without merit, but there are problems when most of the songs are bland and the best track is the only one without vocals
Day477 - i liked them better when they were called oasis
Boring.
OK I GET IT. Britpop was a big deal in the late 90’s/Early 00’s. That doesn’t mean we need to give every single Oasis soundalike a spot on the list. Like this is fine, but I’ve already heard this before I even hit play. And after listening I’m still not sure I did. I assumed I was going to be gifted a Dylan cover, but was underwhelmed when it was just a shared title. Favorite song was North Country Boy.
teetering between a 2 and a 3. the best songs were the instrumentals so i’ll got with 2 overall
An easy listen, however it is like cooking without spices. It’s fine but is a bit bland. 2.5
Completely fine, forgettable britpop.
Meh
My bad, but bland, which some might say is worse.
Brit Pop - they peaked in with "The Only One I Know" on "Some Friendly."
There’s no way the author of this thing genuinely thinks all these random British bands from his hometown are making albums “we need to hear before we die”.
It sorta just blends together after a while. I suspect they were probably good live. But I have no desire to listen to this ever again. 2/5
Meh
It is not that it's bad per se, but in the context on 1001 albums I must listen to before I die? I'm questioning that level of praise. Quite generic.
This is pretty meh
Very middle of the road British 90s alt. Nothing offensive here. Nothing really innovative. It's just pretty plain.
Oasis b-sides the world didn’t need
A boring, uninspiring British rock album that doesn't belong anywhere near this list. The Charlatans name check all kinds of key influences whose sound and vibe doesn't show up on the album at all. It was estimated that they sold a total of 344,000 albums in the UK by 2022. That tells you everything. A meaningful album in the U.S. will sell that much in one week. At this rate they'll crack one million in another 75 years from now!
Meh
Not something I'm familiar with at all. The label britpop worries me however, not really a genre I'm too enamoured with. Can't really say I'm too fond of the album cover, the name of the album nor the name of the band, though the music could still surprise. Really curious as to what this sounds like. With No Shoes Whiny vocals. Compressed. Very late 90s. The electric guitar sounds okay. A bit toothless. Generic chorus. Did not like. 2/5 North Country Boy The verse vocal melody is fine. Cringeworthy lyrics. Sounds extremely dated, very much a product of its time. No thank you. 2/5 Tellin' Stories Flat and soulless bass. The most generic acoustic guitar in all of history. I guess the electric guitar sort of does a decent job. I just can't really find anything interesting to point out. The outro is good. Average. 2.5/5 One to Another Something with a bit of a kick to it. The opening riff has decent rhythm. The song just kills its own momentum halfway through. Shows some promise, but nothing too interesting. Average. 2.5/5 You're a Big Girl Now Decent guitar playing. Really not a fan of the vocals. Absolutely horrendous chorus, straight up parody tier. Hard to get through. 1.5/5 How Can You Leave Us The overall sound of this track is just not working for me. Garbled mess, the production does it no favours. Don't like the vocals, don't like the writing. I'm starting to think this band really isn't for me. Not good. 1.5/5 Area 51 Instruments are being played. The keys adds some different instrumentation to the track, it's a breath of fresh air. Why is this called Area 51? It's not exaclty the image that shows up in my head. Sounds like a vague commercial you're not really sure what's for. A bit pointless. 2/5 How High Nothing to say. Meh. 2/5 Only Teethin' A slightly different sound, hallelujah! Decent instrumental. The keys are good, theres a miniscule level of funk to the guitar and bass that is trying to escape through the monotony of everything else. The energy on the verses is just a mood killer. The whiny Gallagher-esque vocals are especially egregious on this one. The outro is the best part of the song. Average. 2.5/5 Get on it Why is the opening note like 2x as loud as the rest of the album. Hate the mix. If that's a harmonica I want it put down, it's obviously in a lot of pain. If that's a synth or a keyboard note why does it sound like that. There's a bit of attitude here which I appreciate. The interplay between the band members is solid, sometimes some decent synergy pokes through like in the final few minutes of this song. Still don't like it, but I still think they deserve some credit. Did not like. 2/5 Rob's Theme Their song for their band mate who died in a car crash shortly before this album. There's a few psychedelic elements that I quite like. The reverby keys and the repeating guitar. I wish it evolved a bit more. Fine. 3/5 Can't say I liked that much. I hate using the word boring to describe a work of art, but this is what it was to me. Really struggled to find anything to even comment on through most of it. The production was mind-numbing, the lyrics uninteresting or just bad and the performance did not do anything to salvage it. Not even memorable enough to be bad. Leads nowhere. At some points I glimpsed a bit of talent, but it's presented in such a way that by the time I see it I just want the song to be over already. Nothing here I'd want to revisit. Not even interesting enough to warrant 1 stars. Why is this even here? Fave track. Rob's Theme Least fave track. You're a Big Girl Now
Pleasant but nothing really stood out
Boring
Boring
Sounds like Diet Oasis. Nothing remarkable. 2 stars.
hmm... not my usual sort of thing and maybe if i listened more closely i would get more out of it, but it's a little noisy for my taste? good tho, just not my cuppa
Incredibly generic music, with a mix that makes sure nothing stands out. It honestly sounds like the producer didn't trust any individual instrument or lyric to stand on it's own, so everything is just pushed into a strange carpet of sound. The result is a unpleasant mush. It's a mushy album.
Generic brit rock - Temu Oasis - why is this on here? 2* only because it didn't sound like garbage.
Inoffensive
Charlatans indeed
Generic Brit-Pop. The only interesting thing about it is that their guitarist got drunk af and killed himself. 4/10
Immediately wanted to dye my hair black and wanted to die in general
very much british, sounds like every other britpop band of that era, nothing new or exciting, idk its just kinda bland… 2.5/5
Milquetoast Oasis
2.2 Diet Oasis
Just okay
It's fine, but to me this is just pure shrek soundtrack material. 1.5/5
this was completely unmemorable.
If you wanted to listen to Oasis but didn’t want your friends to know you were listening to Oasis you could play this and hope they didn’t notice.
Pretty OK listening on a rainy December day. I don't really need or want more Oasis in my life but I didn't hate it. 2.5
I was ready to apologize for accusing the Charlatans of being junior varsity Oasis based solely on the album cover but then they turned in the most junior varsity Oasis album they possibly could have. It was fine throughout.
never heard this before, this is 90s as hell. pretty sure my doctor's office uses rob's theme as hold music. inoffensive. 2.5
two possibilities: - I heard this album at some point because a bunch of people I thought were cool on livejournal were really into british bands that sound like this - I have never heard this album but I've heard other british bands that sound like this
Left zero impression
Only know one song by this band, and it’s not on this album. That said, this is disappointing. Whiny and ordinary, like Oasis. There’s nothing special. It’s aggressively mediocre and totally unnecessary.
Nice album. Close your eyes it's Oasis! Who came first though?
I found it exceedingly difficult not to constantly compare this to Oasis. If this is what Oasis would have sounded like without the brotherly animosity, I am thankful the Gallagher brothers hate(d) each other... This is like the vegan version of Oasis. It's pretty close to the real deal, but not quite. If you got used to never hearing Oasis and then you heard this, it would be totally fine and you'd maybe even start to forget the differences. I say this as a person who eats a lot of vegan alternatives.
I was not overly excited about the vocals. At first they started to sound a little like Oasis, but whinier if that's even possible. There wasn't really anything that stood out for me for it: the guitars, vocals, etc. It just seemed like a substandard version of other Britpop. Next.
Oasis tribute band
2 - kinda same at sounding not my style bored me a but
There's too many britpop albums on this list. This one is alright but definitely not an essential listen.
Decent Britpop but I felt the singer's voice was a bit whiny sounding for my tastes
This didn't feel great but it was fine. The last song at least did a cool build up at the end. Didn't really grab me. Felt a bit generic in ways. Could be replaced on the list.
The mixing is terrible. The vocals are getting trampled on. A bunch of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band sound here. Really suffers from that 1990s, early 2000s compression and lack of dynamic sound. Makes it bland.
Looking at the album cover: Wow, these guys really want to be Oasis. Two tracks in: Wow, these guys REALLLLY want to be Oasis. I'm honestly not sure why this deeply mediocre album of middling Brit-pap is considered one we "Have to listen to", because my overriding emotion through the whole thing was "...ehhhhh". Sorry Charlatans, but not worth the listen.
Totally bland and forgettable. Yesterday’s “Hangman’s Daughter” may have been nutty, but at least it was interesting - give me something like that over this just about any day.
Bro's trying really hard to be Liam Gallagher
Kinda lame tbh. If oasis is your thing then I’m sure you’d be happy.
Uma sonoridade bem típica dos anos 90. Não achei nada muito relevante, mas não é ruim. 2,5/5
Uninteresting
Idc
This list is vindictive. I'm being punished. Actually, it was ok, but it's discount Oasis and I'll never come across it again.
I was never a huge fan. A bit like ever other band of this genre. Not quite sure why they stood out more than others.
Repetitivo
Shite
there is nothing really here that's worth coming back for.
not much pizzaz but isn’t a bad album, just not good
Meh
Good lord, another British alternative band from the 90s. The writer seems to heavily biased in favor of this stuff, which at a certain point just sounds like dudes who thought they could also be the Stone Roses.
You had to be there to enjoy this. And if you were there, I'm sorry to hear that.
Me: Mum, can we listen to Oasis? Mum: We already have Oasis at home Oasis at home:
Poor man's Oasis. Would probably give Oasis a 3 and this is notably worse.
More Mid Brit-Pop that would soundtrack a direct-to-tv teen movie.
Pretty generic and unremarkable. The instrumental tracks were at least interesting and explored some neat musical ideas, but they're very hidden in an album that doesn't have much else to say with it's songs. About what I expected. Top tracks: Area 51, Rob's Theme
More mediocre Brit-pop. Why? This is not new, interesting or as good as other Brit-pop that dominates the list. It doest hurt the ears so gets a 2nd star for being completed
Look at the album cover. Complete apathy coming from all those lads, you can tell they didnae put their heart into it at all.
Pre-listening thoughts: are we knocking out EVERY 90s alt rock album NOW???? Why ANOTHER from 1997 TWO DAYS IN A ROW HELP ME GOD Post/during listening thoughts: oasis from SHEIN. If you like oasis you MIGHT enjoy this a little less. Hope this band got tickets to oasis’s reunion tour and as they’re sitting in the audience they think “man that could have been us if we came first and wrote better music” 3.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no and i hate this British editor for putting bands like this on the list cause they’re so insignificant Fav tracks: North Country Boy Least fav tracks: Area 51, How High
Kinda bland IMO
I was hoping for more from this one
A refreshing palette cleanser after alot of blues and dad rock. But refreshing in the sense it's different, not because it's amazing or nothing. Not entirely shit but i don't think I'll be going out of my way to listen to these guys again, didn't really land with me.
Sound bridges between eras. classic rock without the grandeur nor enough alternative sound to be interesting. Not much punch. Proto oasis/coldplay chud rock. Not my bag. At least there's a bit of scuzz.
Yawn
I don't think I need this! Not bad but not for my ears!
It seems they have taken a swerve at Oasis and haven't moved on.
Just sounded like a oasis/stone roses derivative
“Mom, can we get Oasis?” “No, sweetie, we already have Oasis at home.” Oasis at home: The Charlatans
indie nasal voice, not a fan ! yewwww, shewwws Sorry i just googled it and one of the members died during the recording of this album and they just ? replaced him ? and did a gig three weeks later? wild area 51 is a fun song enjoying the second half of the album more than the first Songs added to my 1001 albums playlist: - North Country Boy - Area 51
sounds like oasis. no big deal.
Spikes of something 3-star worthy, but all in all a recycled attempt at being better than Oasis.
Despite their Madchester pedigree, The Charlatans fail to captivate with these stories, proving that seniority doesn't always translate to superiority in the dynamic 90s UK rock scene.
It was fine, but apart from a couple of interesting tracks, it was pretty by numbers. Not one of the essential albums of Brit Pop for me.
Kinda generic 90's?
More britpop. Didn't leave much of an impression.
I was underwhelmed. Very mediocre album beginning to end.
Uninspired and painfully average
This list has so many headscratchers on it. I can't for the life of me even begin to understand what kind of argument can be made for this album's inclusion. But it's not the first of it's kind. Seems like they are just a poor man's Oasis. Pretty meh.
Meh
I listened to this album three times, and can't tell you a single thing about it. It must be ok if I tried three times, but it's not good if I just tuned it out every time.
2 soltsje one to another.
I think I charted my pants. 4/10
Bland.
There seems to be this overwhelming opinion among the other people who have also committed to doing this same thing that there are a shit ton of brit pop albums on the list. Apparently not enough where it has affected my experience that much. I’ve had more trouble with the generic 60s albums than those. But I guess today is the first example of said genre of albums. And if this is the consistent trend of quality that the rest of them will be following, I can sort of sympathize with those who are frustrated. I’ve only really heard one proper brit pop album, which was (What's the Story) Morning Glory? And that actually wasn’t half bad. Plus I’ve gone back to many of those songs and they have grown on me since. I think this record strays far from what made that Oasis record so enjoyable. Like for starters, the singer sort of sounds like Liam Gallagher, except his singing voice kind of sucks. It’s just not nearly as listenable as Liam’s. And that seems to be a common theme with the rest of this album. This album seems to lean less on the alternative rock sound of bands like Oasis and Blur and more on the sound of baggy. Which is honestly a genre tag that means next to nothing to me. I’ve never really known what that meant. But this still has that sort of neo-psychedelic vibe. And it just doesn’t feel as natural. It comes off as forced, like someone trying their best to imitate the cool brit pop bands. Truthfully this genre was never a favorite of mine. People were tired of it by the end of the 90s, and they are especially tired of it now. And I’m sort of inclined to agree. Rating: 4/10
I never really liked this style of 90s britpop. It's okay, no real hooks.
You ever see an album cover and just groan to yourself because you know what's coming? This was better than expected but only because my expectations were so low. Unremarkably average. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)
Whilst always aware of The Charlatens i was more of an Oasis fan when it came to Britpop. Some of the songs on here are good but do merge into one another without any clear divergence in musical style. Not an album for me. 2/5 22/5/24
Standard issue Britpop, nothing exciting or new here.
Tokavika biisi oli kova, muuten ei
It was just a bit weird
Congratulations to the makers of this list they have now added another genre of music for me to hate in Brit Pop. This is the album that finally did it for me. Everyone who compared them to Oasis was right and I hate Oasis so this sucked. His voice was terrible, whiny, stupid sounding, and he sounded kinda like Bob Dylan on a couple songs which was a double kick in the teeth. The only good tracks were the two instrumental ones where I didn't have to hear his voice. There is nothing about Brit Pop that makes it worthy to be on a list of albums I NEED to listen to before I died. This was stupid, whiny, boring, dull, and not enjoyable.
ugh-why is this on the list??? it's like listening to Oasis "light". the music was ok & much better than the vocals but will I ever listen to them again-nope. 2.5 stars
I wonder if these guys have ever heard of Oasis. I bet they would like them.
I realize these guys have been around since the late 80s but this just sounds like dollar store Oasis.
2 stars. pretty boring.
This is fine, nothing to complain about. But, also nothing particularly interesting to comment on. I don't see listening to this again.
Eh, the album was fine but nothing special
Okay. I think I’m getting the point here. 1001 Albums is A LOT of albums and that is going to cover a lot of music that isn’t necessarily my jam. Clearly The Charlatans had a following and they obviously have a body of work and this all in is tinged with some tragedy and sadness. But I’m going to be a lot more conservative here. I reckoned will end up with 100 5s, maybe 200 4s and the rest will be 3s unless there is something truly dreadful. Liked the organ. Liked some of the base lines. Appreciated the scratching. But look, if you are going to just make songs based on riffs and recycled chord changes you better have really good lyrics. Especially if you have no melodies or solo virtuosity. You’re a Big Girl Now is probably my favourite for the open guitar tuning. But guys, your melody is not going to set you free. You’re only barely flirting with the idea of melody. The best I can say about this album is that it’s toe tapping. Lovely and upbeat. I could put it on and read and I would not be interrupted with a surprising moment of delight. Good on a road trip although not much to sing along to.
boring/one dimensional/british
90s garage rock, twinge of aughts sound. And birdsong sample?
Discount Oasis
Quite passable but uninspired for parts. The acoustic track You're a Big Girl Now stands out pleasantly. Area 51 has a good groove and is also pleasing. The rest is so Oasis-like, well-behaved and probably due to the times.
We have Oasis at home.
Sorry, I heard no greatness here, just an average House Band.
Literally 10s of britpop albums I would listen to over this
I don’t like Oasis
Hard meh. 2/5
Not amazing, more original and less annoying than many of the UK guitar bands of the 90s, and this was their peak I suppose. I'm bored to death of the big singles since they were overplayed for years, and the rest is fairly bland. This one surprised me with it's dullness. Saw them at Reading Festival back in 2000 I think, they were great, more hit songs than I remebered remembering. But this just isn't much cop as an album.
Innocuous, generic, overproduced, immediately forgettable Britpop.
Didn't really like this all that much.
A decent album to put on while I drink my morning coffee and browse the ol' Internet on this Sunday morning, but on the other hand, it lacks a certain spice to make me want to listen to more.
Not quite as good as I expected it to be
Thoughts before listening: 90s Brit-pop that wasn't as popular as Oasis and Blur...at least in the US. I don't believe I've ever heard these guys before. Review: This is okay. The songs are catchy and anthemic so I understand why they were popular. That being said, I'm not hearing anything that suggests this album should be considered one of the greatest of all time. Maybe if I grew up listening to the Charlatans I'd feel differently. There are certainly 90s American alt-rock albums that I'd put on my personal 1,001 best albums list (i.e. the Toadies), but I'd be shocked to see them on here just like I am with these guys that seem like also-rans of the UK 90s scene. "One To Another" is a good song that I've added to the playlist. 2-stars.
Mediocre Madchester songs I didn't like at the time and enjoy even less now.
A little underwhelming. Felt like generic British Rock. This could happily play as background music, but it is not an album experience for me.
2/5 Pretty standard brit pop from the 90s.
Tellin' Stories has hints of interesting instrumentation, but it seems like more style over substance. None of the lyrics caught my attention, and the generic Britpop guitars, American soul rhythm and kind of annoying vocal delivery makes this one a hard sell for me. Fav track: Get on it 2.5/5
A competent, but forgettable Britpop record. It feels like a minor, late Oasis LP. Nothing wrong with that, but nothing right enough to warrant this placement either. I also found the singer's voice to be a little grating, which didn't help either. Favourite song: Only Teething, North Country Boy, One to Another, Get On It
Just another English rock band's album. Not bad, just generic
A fine, workmanlike album. But an absolute waste of an entry on this list.
Don’t need to listen to an Oasis wannabe band. I don’t even like Oasis
The music was okay. I couldn't stand the singer's voice. It was whiny and boring.
Meh… it’s like Oasis -who I don’t like - but more boring. Not unlistenable or abhorrent. Just unremarkable and I likely will never hear any of this again. 2/5
Nothing particularly noteworthy or memorable after the final beat.
Very uninteresting. Not good or bad, it just is.
Was very ready to shit on this album after the first half, even had a good joke review (The real charlatans were the people that put this album on the list!), but the second half did pick up a lot for me. Still thought it was overall bland and completely undeserving of a spot on the list, but a couple of perfectly good jams on the back end. Fave track: Area 51
Fine, easy listening but not too remarkable
Oops the author accidentally put another Oasis cover band on here
Probably the most forgettable album so far. Also not terrible though
marti stink marti stink marti stink
Kinda like a UK Oasis, and very similar to many other UK albums on here
It's like Great Value Oasis. They sound similar but they lack the high points that Oasis could reach. I don't know why anyone would listen to this when you could just put on Definitely Maybe or What's The Story? Morning Glory. I guess some people really like that bland Brit pop sound; probably a populace that finds bubbles and squeak to be palatable.
This is one of those albums that doesnt really make me feel anything at all. No joy, no pain, no nostalgia, not even annoyance. 2.5/5
Oasis at home and I don’t like Oasis
2. Oasis knock off? Not sure why this was on the list
Ah ok, not my style. Too emo.
Meh.
Mixing turn-of-the-century Britpop with 60s and 70s rock was an interesting idea, but it didn't really work. I found the album boring and derivative. Also, it just sounds like the vocals are not at the center of the songs. Not that they are too quiet or unclear, but I could not tell you what a single song is about or what the singer sounds like.
Some decent jams scattered through, overall not a fan. Will I listen to again: 0%
Another rehash of alternative/britpop/whatever, ala Oasis or Stone Roses. I wouldn't consider this essential.
Meh, this album was rather generic. I did enjoy some of the instrumental tracks at the end. Probably won't listen to this again.
Not my vibe
# 74 : Ok I guess, nothing special, it's only 50 minutes or so, but seemed to go on forever. Not my thing, kind of like every pub band I listened to growing up in the nineties. Enough of the Nineties Brit Pop!
OK - but I agree with many other reviewers - seems a bit mediocre to justify inclusion on this list.
There’s some decent tracks but nothing exceptional. A solid Britpop album Nothing more
Strange how cringy some of my post-adolescent Brit Pop heroes aged into mediocrity.
So very beige. Does nothing for me. Never understood the hype.
not into it
I mean, Oasis already exists. And they did it better. Nobody needed this.
