It was awful.
Harsh, heavy, alt rock
Never really given Korn much of a listen before, outside of Freak on a Leash. It’s hard not to compare them to Slipknot - they’ve both got that nu-metal-with-horror-film-overtones thing going on (music designed to shock, to a large extent). I think Slipknot did it better though. Korn just seem cruder - especially lyrically - and there’s not much variety in this, other than some occasional rapping (the Fred Durst mutual diss track colab, incidentally, might be a fun idea on paper but the execution is poor - the put-downs are really lame). There were enough guitar effects and melodic-but-grungy hooks to keep me interested but I’m not sure if it’s actually any good. 2.5
I'm still not a fan and I love metal. I've tried but a whole album is just too much. There's some moments but overall it's just not very good.
It's ... a lot. The industrial sound, especially the guitars aren't bad. But Davis's vocals aren't great. And the songs themselves aren't great. It probably deserves to be on the list just because it's an example of a very popular genre, but it's not for me.
2.5 I liked this more than I'm comfortable admitting
I'm starting to think that maybe whoever wrote this list just tricked thousands of people into listening to the worst albums of all time. I literally just listened to emotionally disturbed men singing about dick-sucking, butt-fucking, and Boy George. Korn actually hates any and all audiences that they may have.
The songs began to blur together after about the fifth track.
Hateful in every sense of the word.
Even now I can’t say I’m a fan of their music, strange!
I had a friend who put this on to fall asleep to during a sleepover. I was looking forward to listening to this, but I think it aged worse than Chocolate Starfish.
Alltid varit mer av en bizkit fan... korn är lite väl dramatiskt och barnsligt. Musiken är helt cool men sångaren och attityden är inte min grej. Mer macho/bigoted än jag trodde det sku vara!
In the context of “should you listen to this album before you die,” no.
Tiene temazos, pero es medio denso.
Korn's Follow the Leader album, released during the nu-metal wave, exemplifies their pioneering efforts in blending heavy guitar riffs with hip-hop elements, fronted by Jonathan Davis's distinctive vocal style. The music is undeniably forceful, featuring tracks like Freak on a Leash and Got the Life that showcase the band's raw energy and experimental sound. However, the lyrics can be controversial at times, exploring dark themes that may not resonate universally. Davis's vocal delivery, while emotive, occasionally veers into a whiny tone throughout the album. As one of the forefront bands in nu-metal, Korn pushed boundaries and influenced many peers with their aggressive yet melodic approach. Follow the Leader serves as a testament to their genre-bending abilities and their impact on the music scene. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None
I don't like this album or Korn in general I'm sick of my friends 🚫🚫🚫 ngl I do enjoy a little bit of life is peachy though
Not a Korn fan, but it's not unlistenable. Low 2.
Ugh!
At least I never have to listen to it again
Not for me. I got bored.
i understand people not liking soad or linkin park now a bit. 2.5
lmao I'd somehow made it this far without hearing "Freak On A Leash" before. The album hits you in the face with fun insane decisions like that up front, but then drags on so long that it all wears out its welcome extremely hard. Probably my least favorite nu-metal act I've listened to for the project--SOAD was a great time, and even Linkin Park was mostly cute.
I was very curious how I was going to feel about this. I mostly missed out on Korn because either I was too young when an album came out (I was 9 or 10 for this one) or just hadn't really developed a taste for that kind of music. That definitely came later. I ended up feeling kinda "eh" about it overall. There were some songs I really enjoyed, and I liked the overall sound. Unfortunately the songs that weren't my thing REALLY weren't my thing. For the first half of the album I was feeling like this definitely would be a 3 star for me but as I listened on I started leaning more towards a 2. The last two songs were weak enough to me that it slid it pretty solidly into a 2. I'd give it a second listen if the mood struck but don't think I'll be reaching for this very much as there are other albums that scratch a similar itch. I'd be more likely to just skip through most of it and stop on a few songs.
What were they thinking
Despite enjoying some nu metal and generally lots of metal, Korn were never among my favourites, so Follow The Leader doesn't quite hit the right notes for me, but it's good enough in places. Like Freak On A Leash was massive because of the video but the song is pretty meh, but when they go heavier like they do on Dead Bodies Everywhere and BBK and My Gift To You I'm happier. The whole thing is too long and most of the tracks have too much of that weird low screechy hum in them somewhere that is most pronounced in the mix for FoaL and I find it distracting. No higher than a 2.
To be fair I was expecting to give this a 1. But having listened it’s better than others of this genre and I would give 2.5 if I could.
Oh, Korn. I've never spent much time listening to these guys, but I know "Freak On A Leash." The cover to this album is much more memorable to me. and seeing this artwork takes me back to middle school and high school, where the 'scary' kids wore shirts emblazoned with this picture. I listened to a fair amount of alternative rock when this came out, and I used to hear this song on the radio that had the lyrics "so follow the leader down, and swallow your pride and drown." I assumed this must be the title track from this album. Nope, that was "Seein Red" by Unwritten Law, and there is no title track on this album. Anyway, on to the album at hand. I'll admit right off the bat that I was never a huge nu metal fan at the peak of its popularity. I owned a Linkin Park's Reanimation, and I still enjoy Limp Bizkit's "Rearranged" and "Take A Look Around" (look, they're not particularly good songs, but they're fun jams. The lyrics to "Take A Look Around" are so bad, but I love them in the worst way. "I don't even know what I should say, 'Cause I'm an idiot, a loser, a microphone abuser." That just rolls off the tongue so well). I don't mind dark music, but this stuff is dark to the point of where it's dirty, like the darkness has made it mildew. The distortion, with it's screeches and wavering, is just unpleasant to listen to in my opinion. And maybe that's the point, but if so, it's lost on me. The drumming on this album is really good though, and I love how it can go from slower and softer to chaotic and booming in about half a second. The same thing can be said about Jonathan Davis's voice. I'll never understand how he can go from singing to screaming to growling and then back to singing so quickly. "Freak On A Leash" is easily the standout song from this album, with its iconic singing, and the well-known... scream scatting? by Davis towards the end of the song. Most of the songs sounded pretty similar to me, but the album was livened up a bit by guest appearances by Ice Cube, Fred Durst, and Tre Hardson. Durst's appearance on the crass "All in the Family" was particularly fun. I'm a fan of the occasional intentionally filthy song, and this didn't disappoint. Aside from the homophobic lyrics (not that it makes it right, but lyrics like that weren't very rare in the nineties, sadly), the song is pretty hilarious as Durst and Davis take turns dissing each other in increasingly filthy ways. Also, shoutout to the bagpipes on "My Gift to You." This album isn't up my alley at all, but I appreciate its influence. Korn helped push hard rock in a new direction, and popular music would look much different without their influence.
Dark and gloomy, can’t work out whether old mate is scratching the record back and forth to get those sounds or if it’s actually coming from his voice. Either way it gets old quickly.
I like Korn. This is my least favorite Korn album.
Un dosaco en toda la regla.
Dead Bodies Everywhere sums up the project - let’s be controversial and juxtapose shouting ‘Dead bodies everywhere’ over metal noise with lullaby tunes. Well done guys. You made a great point. No, wait, All in the Family sums up the project. Weak ass rap battle with Fred Durst, screaming choruses and jeez, if 'You call yourself a singer? / You're more like Jerry Springer' isn't both the worst rhyme and worst diss ever recorded. No, wait, its Cameltosis, where we're just scattering the C word all over the place. So shocking, lads.
Un dosaco en toda la regla.
I'm convinced the only people who enjoy this album today feel this way because of the 90s/teenage years nostalgia. in the first song the singer sounds like he's screaming while crying (tbf I'd also cry if I had to sing this) – and this image of an angsty teenager throwing a tantrum remains with me through the rest of the album. in all fairness, though, there are some cool musical moments in there that remind me of a few "modern-day" noise-rock/punk bands
Þetta er... já já, alveg hægt að hlusta á þetta. En ekkert uppáhald.
Bombastic side eye @ All In the Family
The band really named themselves after Corn
Freak on a leash is still pretty fun
This just wasnt that good sadly.
Nu metal is not for me, but I can appreciate the Nine Inch Nails-ish imprint on some songs and the Ice Cube appearance.
Disappointing metal album by Korn. It has not aged that well.
I'm usually up for defending nu-metal but never quite got Korn. Extra star just for nostalgia but not great...
# Playlist track - Freak On A Leash # Notes - This cover brings me back memories! Especially memories from the AWESOME music video for "Freak On a Leash" (go watch it if you haven't!). That broke my mind back on MTV days. - Sadly, the whole album isn't as cool. It is a bit too long and repetitive. - Only recommend to nu-metal fans. It didn't age too well, on my humble opinion. But go ahead if that's your thing.
it’s just endlessly obnoxious I get why some people like this kinda stuff but it is not for me at all - 3/10
I had been waiting to hear Korn as I've frequently heard their praises. Normally, metal has me hopeful, and then disappointed. This was no exception. Metal, Nu Metal...so far, not to my liking, even when given a fair chance.
A lot of cringe lyric-wise. Definitely a product of the nu metal era. Glad that era died out. I like some of the instrumentation. And I would still take this over Nortorious B.I.G.
I just don’t know.
not my style at all. ugh. need to go sit in a quiet room for a while. only reason they get 2 stars is that a 1.5 not available. they can play instruments, and have a distinct sound- I just don't care for it
Just a little to out there for me.
Like when someone offers me fried livers... no thank you.
Curious if there's a more polarizing album in this mix. Maybe there's some ICP lurking somewhere. Culturally I feel positioned to try to dislike this album (and I do, haha) but, since I grew up listening to hardcore / alternative rock, there are moments in here that I dig. Got The Life is a track I could see myself hankerin for. Might just be because it reminds me of my sister 🙂
Was ok, I am less into metal generally though.
Must have hit a very specific age of teenagers because there's nothing here that's new or better than can be found in a thousand other bands. Bit whiny and samey.
I used to quite enjoy doing the weird beatbox thing in Freak On A Leash. I never really clicked that this album was released in the 90s as I first heard Korn around 2005 as an angsty little tween. I’m not sure I’ve ever listened to this album in full, so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: Freak On A Leash Favourites: Freak On A Leash This is such as album of its time. That’s clear enough by the feature of Fred Durst on All In The Family (which features lyrics such as “I’ll lick your little dick”). Freak On A Leash is a definite highlight here. The rest of the album is a bit naff in my silly little opinion. If you’ve never heard Freak On A Leash, definitely give that a listen. Don’t bother with the rest here though.
Seems like NiN, a little aggressive for me
I love the production on metal bands on so much, those heavy guitars, loud drums , it’s amazing but I just can’t stand the vocal performances on most of the songs. PS: Ice cube sounds great over some rock production lol
Bf no puedo con el metal
While there were a few parts I liked, I didn't enjoy this album as a whole. The musicianship is definitely solid, but the tracks were way too chaotic for my taste. The vocals aren't quite my cup of tea either.
Un dosaco en toda la regla.
Not really a fan then. Not really a fan now.
Grunge não é pra mim.
Surprisingly, I liked more from Follow The Leader than I thought I was going to. I remember when Korn was a new band and seeing some of their videos and performances on TV. I didn't like the music back then and I still don't like the music now. I don't dislike the music as much as I used to. I one of the reasons that I don't like Korn is that I'm not as angry and upset with the world, so it's hard to surround myself with that kind of content. There are times when some of the music draws me in but the vocals and lyrics push me right back out. With guest artists like Ice Cube and Fred Durst, you shoul not be surprised that I can't get past 2 stars.
while i appreciate the instrumentation on the album. the riffs and melodies are certainly rememberable and energetic. the vocals and the vibe of it is just not for me. also, i want my music to really sound harsh when it wants to be and this album sort of never gets there. the vocals are meh and the production gets samey after a while. the rapping is not to its credit as well. while i can appreciate some songs like freak on a leash, got the life, it's on!, bbk i just don't see myself listening to it. it sort of just hangs in the middle where i can't understand what it's for. the riffs and overall sound is not dark, rough enough for my liking. the vocals are kinda whiney. and i don't know when i'd like to listen to this. it's a strong 4 to a light 5.
This band has great sound alchemy. The music is great but I'm not a huge fan of the vocal stylings and the poetry of the lyrics doesn't really grab me. The album starts off strong. I like the first 4 songs then everything goes downhill when they start bringing in the guest rappers. Favorite song is Got the Life. Wish there were more songs like that on the album. I took a listen to Korn's first album which I did like better than this one. If I ever compile a playlist for summonsing a demon, Dead Bodies Everywhere will definitely be on it.
I had this album back in the day and really enjoy Got The Life and Freak On A Leash. Like Limp Bizkit, the angry, aggressive vibe isn’t always my thing, but this album feels more thought out than Chocolate Starfish…
I was a bit disheartened to see Korn come up this morning after Limp B yesterday. As lawdogg remarked, “Did these cards get shuffled?” 😆 It’s not terrible, just not the type of music that moves me. I do like this one a bit more than Chocolate Hot Dogs. Hoping to have a break from this genre after today though.
This isn't my cup of tea but it has its moments. Korn have no shortage of raw power and they sound good on a technical level. The rhythm section is solid too. Even when I didn’t love the song, I still caught myself banging my head from time to time. But the songwriting is lacking. And without memorable melodies, the tracks blur together. Getting through an hour of this music can feel like a slog. There are some good metal riffs but it wasn't enough for me. This is missing something. The low point is definitely the Fred Durst-featuring, homophobic insult battle "All in the Family." That one was rough. I really like the animalistic grunt-scatting on "Freak on a Leash." I wish there were more strange, creative choices like that in the music.
Så mye edge at jeg nesten kuttet meg selv.
As much as I quite liked some of tracks, it’s a very creepy album. I couldn’t ever quite shake a picture in my mind. Kids in Matrix coats.
I feel dirty after listening to this album. Enjoyed the guitar work and that's about it.
not at all my cup of tea ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ unexpectedly tough, it's an arguably easy listen, didn't expect it.
-- Stimme nervig
I had never heard Korn previously and was expecting something a little heavier and wilder. It sounds a bit by the numbers.
Lyder lidt for meget som hvis et angstanfald fik et Heavy metal backing travl
Really not my cup of tea. Freak On a Leash is kinda funny but the album is hard to dance to and overall just sounds angry, not my vibe at all.
Meh. the rapping is embarrassing over 20 years later, but the metal grinding levels that out a bit, but does not save it.
Awful music for awful people
I started listening to Korn because my friend Dave was into them. We were goofy little pre-teens who thought excessive swearing was the epitome of cool. We scrawled that logo with the backwards R everywhere. Around the time of this album's release I remember thinking it was good, but not as good as the first two albums: too polished and well-produced for my oh-so-edgy and underground self. The album after this, Issues, was OK. I didn't listen to it as much, and from there my interest in Korn kind of drifted off as I got older. Re-visiting this, there are still moments I enjoy here (the de-tuned percussive bass sound is still great), but there's just so much cringe for me now. I mean, the rap battle with Fred Durst, come on. I struggle to comprehend how this record did such numbers at the time.
I really wanted to like this album. Korn weren't really on my listening radar even when I was angry youth, other than Freak On A Leash. I was excited to fill in a gap in my listening history and indulge in some serious adolescent level rage and angst. But maaaaan, so much of this is so naff. And quite boring? I stopped paying attention quite quickly. The. Rap. Battle. Fred Durst. Need I say more? The first few songs are decent but it tails off so fast. Not for me.
I remember being exposed to Koᴙn in my early high school years and hating them with a passion. I've widened my musical tastes since then and can tolerate them more these days, even tapping my feet to Got The Life out of familiarity. Follow The Leader wasn't as awful as I recall from 25 years ago but it's still too heavy and obnoxious for my overall liking.
Freak on a leash deserves better
My parents were super strict and wouldn't let me buy CDs with the Parental Advisory sticker. Right before 9th grade, they relented and this was one of the first albums I bought (come to think of it, 99 was a good year for dumb white teenagers with inchoate rage and some extra cash). This was one of my favorite albums in high school, but the next few years revealed to me that Korn was not a good band. So after tiring of their sound and moving on to better metal bands, I sold this CD to the Exchange and Korn went into my mental "do not listen" file. And there they stayed for several years. Then one day, Got the Life popped up on my Spotify. I had started to recognize that there was good Nu-Metal and it was OK to listen to some of the dumb and cringey stuff I liked as a teen. Got the Life had the stuff I look for when I go for good Nu-Metal- cool use of guitar tone, heavy use of the bass, and interesting use of sounds from funk, rap, and electronic music. That song and Freak on a Leash made their way back onto my playlists and, yes, into my heart. So when this album popped up on the generator I was ready for it. I was still a little skeptical, but I suspected this album could be a 3 for me. It's On started and, indeed, it was on. From that song through to Dead Bodies Everywhere, I was back to being that teenager, filled with a rage that I now recognized was caused in part by the sneaking realization that not everything was OK in America following the Reagan and Clinton years, despite what adults at the time believed. I had fully let Korn back into my heart! Then the rest of the album happened. And just... Fucking yikes.
1. itz on - 1 2. freak on a leazh - 1.5 3. got the life - 1 4. dead bodiez everyuuhere - 1.5 5. children of the corn - 0 6. bbk - 1.5 7. pretty - 1 8. all in the family - 0 9. reclaim my place - 1.5 10. juztin - 1 11. zeed - 1 12. cameltoziz - 1 13. my gift to you - 1 14. earache my eye - 1.5
Some nice moments, not exciting overall. Not my type of noise.
First few songs are good, generally hasn’t aged super well
Album 206 of 1001 Korn - Follow the Leader Rating : 2 / 5 Favorite Tracks : Earache My Eye Kind of sucks. Was headed for a '1' but the cover of Earache My Eye popped up.
not for me but neat
dumb but fun to listen to (even if just for the beatbox on Freak on a Leash) but only once.
Flashback to junior high…reminded me of sister’s cruddy ex-boyfriend.
MMM ennummepiashe
Kan het nog pathetischer? Toch nog twee punten omdat ik op het einde een doedelzak hoorde.
Interesting. Not what I need in my life now, but I have a soft spot for KoRn.
This was really not my thing. The guitar sounds were really inventive and interesting but really nothing else about this record 'holds up'. I realize this band/record spawned an entire genre of music that is still popular and evolving today, but it's really not for me. Although the 'hits' are listenable most of the rest of this record is not.
Terrible
A lot of cringe worthy songs, with a special shout out to the lame rap duel with Fred Durst.
The longer this album went on, the more bored I became with it Also I think it’s safe to say that (like most nu-metal from this era) this hasn’t aged very well musically and lyrically Favourite tracks: It’s On!, Freak On a Leash
Younger me - 4/5 Me now - 2/5
couple of ok songs, but overall it tended towards being shit.
Was expecting similar to Slipknot. Not as heavy or industrial. Nothing awful, but nothing special to my ears, so 2.5.
Not for me
Ni metal. Ruido y gritos.
Nu-Metal - combining Hip-Hop with Metal - was an experiment that I think was worth a try in its time. But that time has passed now, and it didn't really work, as it didn't do any favours for either genre. This is mediocre metal music combined with all the traits of Hip-Hop I've come to loathe. 2/5
Not my style of music. Did not like.
Boy, that's for sure the sound of a specific 5 years or so. And there's a reason you don't hear bands like this anymore. It's freaking annoying. I'll give them one star for the sheer balls it took to smash so many genres together. It's a bold move and the sales numbers would say that it paid off for them. In the short run, anyway. I'd go so far as to say that, musically, they pulled it off. These tracks are energetic and gritty and I think they accomplished their goals here. The problem (as is so often the case) lies with the vocals and lyrics. Hot. Garbage. Every line is stupid, every delivery try-hard, and every track is shallow. I'd argue that getting Ice Cube to guest on your nu-metal album is a coup... but then there's that Fred Durst track. And that isht is legitimately horrendous. Completely erases any positives that proceeded it. Ultimately, "Follow the Leader" is a valid data point in the evolutionary timeline of modern music but nothing more. It's not really worth listening to. Not even for research.
Korn didn't catch my interest back in the day and after listening to this album that didn't change. This is probably why people can't take nu metal seriously even though there are good bands in the "genre" though Korn isn't one of them.
Nah I’m good. 3/10
I have a lot of respect for Korn being a groundbreaking act that put nu metal on the map, along with having a super signature style and really talented performances across the board. But I just...cannot stand listening to Korn. They're not for me, there's like maybe 2 Korn songs I like enough to revisit. Granted, one of them, Got the Life, is on this album, but damn these album tracks just blow. Songs like All in the Family and Earache in My Eye are unlistenable, and even on the better songs I really can't stand Jonathan's vocals on this album. I have some respect to this project, but even that is limited when I just HATE some of the songs here.
Freak On A Leash is a hit, even with the scat break that sounds like a dog eating a bowl of lumpy rocks and ice cream. Got The Life has a fun dance beat. Dead Bodies Everywhere sucks ass. God this album is cringy to listen to. Woof this thing is awful in the back half.
My biggest question is why... The music is a mix of doom metal, hip hop, industrial etc. This sounds interesting on paper. However, Korn's songs are so formulaic that the predictability really wears on the listener. Here how to write a Korn song. Begin with a high simplistic guitar riff, ideally with bends and double tracked. Then come in heavy with the main crunchy riff and back off the volume for the vocals which may or may not feature random noises and poorly placed electronic/industrial noises. If you want to put a filter on the drums for a bar or two, knock yourself out, why the hell not. Lyrically, this album is all posturing that to the best of my memory, appeals best to white boys in middle school who thinking being edgy is a personality down to the use of the f-slur. Monkee and Head are great guitarists no doubt, but they are as wasted here as the 70 minutes it took to get through this album. It gets two stars solely because of its influence.
too samey the fred durst feature was really fitting but the ice cube feature was so incongruent
I was surprised to find that I was kind of enjoying this album at first despite it not really being my kind of thing. It was rockin' and I was getting into it. Then "All in the Family" came on (this was their first single release?!?) and it was so terrible it tainted the rest of the album, which seemed to go on forever with the screaming and the fucks and the rest to finish up the over-an-hour with the most painful, pointless skit ever.
I’ve heard of Korn and had some idea of what the album would sound like…I wasn’t very excited about the assignment. However, as I started into it, I was kind of digging it. I think these dudes found an interesting mix of sounds and styles. By the time All in the Family came up, I was getting bored, and then that dumb track was just a complete waste of time…and I think that tainted the rest of the album to the point that I just wanted it to end.
singles OK, the rest pretty bad
This is pretty much the only Korn album I was into. I love how they were distinctive. Until today, I hadn't listened to this for over two decades, so it wasn't something I needed. Got the Life and Freak on a Leash landed for me as something that sounded different and grabbed me. Nothing else was memorable.
I loved this album when I was 16. I don’t remember any of the later tracks on the album. The percussive slap of Freak on a Leash and Got the Life drive this album, but it hasn’t aged well as a complete work. The singles still move my head, but the overall album is lacking in something that I would feel a worthy of being on this list.
Not a fan, basically everything here was and is done better by system of a down in the Nu Metal genre
Not my vibe.
Meh
This isn't for me.
Amazing how long an hour and change can feel.
2.5
It's Korn!
Rap rock is looking/sounding it's age.
Not for me
Knock off Rage Against the Machine.
Ya know for Korn, not as upset as I was expecting
This is very mediocre but it's far from the worst thing on this list. As with anything even remotely close to the metal genre this was SO UNBELIEVABLY LONG
Bass playing and sub bits are nice, ruined by the condmosh scatting from the dreadlocked kilt wearing weirdo.
I can’t really relate to all these emotions
I don't like hip hop and don't like metal. Why not try to put them together? While I like the fusion more than the component parts, the album lacks substance and it's tough slugging to listen to more than a few songs. I like that the name of their tour in support of this album was called "The Family Values Tour". Gotta love the sarcasm. Didn't we have a Cheech and Chong cameo on a recent album. Here we go again on the last track. I'm in favour of new fusions with music and particularly with hip hop so wtf, +1.
Despite growing up in the 90s/00s I realised I'd never actually listened to Korn properly before. I liked it more than I thought I would, appreciate the tight production but it's still not really my thing.
There is some 4 star instrumental stuff on here. And through the first four songs, I was formulating how I was going to rationalize a 3 star rating. But the vocals man. Ugh! The low register growling is just so unbearable. I barely noticed it on the first four tracks. But the. Some of the instrumentals fall off (All In The Family is bad) and all I notice after that is RWAAAARRRRRRRRR…and I gotta turn this shit off.
Why is he so angry and needlessly swearing constantly!?! Yes, I am old! End of the album gave me a headache yet some good riffs, shame about his voice!
what if slipknot was bad
No. Sorry..
Woof. I wanna say I think there is merit here because I think Korn was genuinely influential to the sound of rock after this album. Was it a good influence? That stands to be seen. The first song on this album is bad. Freak on a leash, while I hesitate to call it good, is at least a song I know? There’s an Ice Cube verse on this album! It’s pretty bad. That’s kind of how I feel about everything involving this album. Like, “oh cool this is a thing! Oh shit. It’s bad. “ is pretty much the monologue though this whole album. I’m giving it a 2 because I think it was a majorly influential album…but man this is really bad.
Hated this. Everything I like least about metal plus some dopey rapping and junior high edgelord obscenity. There is some competent musicianship when it isn't descending into long noodling spooky ooky wing wang intervals under a bunch of whisper-growl lyrical B.S.
Meh. I don't dislike the genre as a whole, but I have never warmed to Korn, and didn't particularly enjoy listening through this album. Maybe because I'm of the female persuasion? Anyway, no, no thank you.
Cant. Lyrics are basic, drums are the best of the album, maybe “Got the life” its the best track but i wouldnt listen the album again. It is not necessary a lot of noise to play industrial metal
Starts out very slow lyrically. I prefer my metal to me more fast and angsty also homophobic I guess that's the language used in 1997.
2.5 - Not as horrible as I expected it to be. Could actually work out to a couple songs. Had no idea Earache in the Eye was a Cheech & Chong cover.
The instrumentals are really solid and interesting, vocally its utter shite
I understand why this album and this type of music is attractive to some people. It is not for me, but I did not skip any of the songs. I was familiar with several of the songs but the first time I listened to the whole album. The screaming is never necessary. I cannot relate to the lyrics either and they are not good. I have no desire to revisit the album. It is better than some of the ones on this list. I will round up to a 2 but it is close.
2.5 Freak on a Leash is classic. All in the Family Rocks, the rest seems repetitive.
Faith No More's "Angel Dust" is an ugly album. But in it I find a number of songs I do keep coming back to because in the harshness of the songs there is something there. The songs are challenging, but I find a reward to the songs. I mention this because I feel the harshness here too, but there's not the sense there's something deeper in these songs. It's just a lot of mindless, directionless anger. I know the two songs that were big from this album. I liked the duet with Ice Cube, I felt that worked. But there needed to be some kind of calm somewhere in this album, and I didn't feel it. All I felt was exhausted. And that's never good. Next.
nu metal poo metal
Good production and drums but what are the vocals
I appreciate the heaviness. There is some metal I like a lot, but for some reason I don’t like Nu Metal that much. I liked this album more than slipknot, but a little less than the linkin park album.
Very heavy, would probably only be good for the gym.
A true endurance run that has aged like milk. What the hell is "All in the Family"? A contestant for the title of the worst song ever made, I guess. Fred Durst is like King Midas, except instead of turning shit to gold, he turns gold to shit. Not to imply this album would be gold without Durst. Two out of five because there are still some undeniably good songs here - "Freak on a Leash" especially. My favorite part was when they used the goofy-ass Final Fantasy IX Black Mage Village "hoo" MIDI instrument in the song "Children of the Korn".
Not for me
metal/rock not really my jam
I couldn’t finish it. First one I couldn’t get through. 2 stars because I understand how people with a certain taste could enjoy it
Nostalgic, still not that good
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Justin (10) 2 - Freak on a Leash (2) 3 - Dead Bodies Everywhere (4)
Sounds of the 90s. Better left as a memory
Nu-metal. What a genre. I wasn't hardcore enough to listen to Korn back in the day. Maybe I overlooked their music, we'll see. lol @ the Fred Durst feature. Still not really the type of music I want to listen to.
Boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma Da-boom-da-da-mmm-dum-na-ee-ma
Why do I even waste my time, it’s too long and too shit. The most uninteresting sub-genre of rock that nearly killed the movement, it’s stale and soulless and there isn’t any notion of creativity whatsoever. Stupid fucking toxic male energy, how could you possibly call a homophobic back and forth exchange with Fred Durst a good song?
This is some high energy stuff and sometimes if you don't think about it too hard you will find yourself banging your head along with the music, but if you pay too much attention it all just feels kind of pointless. 2.5 stars
I think he thinks he's a freak? The Linkin / System side of me doesn't find this as bad as I thought I would. The singing not exactly melodic but the riffs are OK. The lyrics not the most savoury but enjoy 'warm as a mitten' in a sexual context.
Porn
ICE CUBE WAS ON THAT? kinda indifferent
The guitar tone is great. And Jonathan D gets a star for how endearing he was in the Woodstock 99 doc. I'm super surprised I didn't get into them when it came out (I was 12, the perfect age for "naughty" music). There's a song where Jonathan and Fred Durst take turns calling each other faggots, which accurately summarizes the state of rock music in 1998.
Couldn't finish this one. Started out pretty good. Then got into some more horrible rap/rock/metal stuff. Production value was good. Drumming with great. Songs are meh.
Well I could have disliked this a lot more than I did. I found it different and had some elements of music I enjoy, but it was mostly loud and aggressive and relentless. Not in and of itself a bad thing but just not the type of aggressiveness that turns my crank. 2.5 stars
Music that kinda just makes you pity the people who made it.
Oh lord. This is one of those albums that really speak to the low quality of this list - this has no place on any self-respecting list of essential music. I say this as someone who listened to Korn in general and this album in particular a lot when I was in my early teens. I am intimately familiar with everything about this album. What pivotal role does it play? I could see arguments for the first Korn album, which has redeeming qualities. It was highly influential on metal and drastically changed the direction of music in the 90s. This? This is Korn reaching commercial success. But choosing this album over the first, you're signifying that the purpose of the list is to reference popularity over historical significance. But casting aside the list's failings, is this a good album? No, not really. It doesn't really hold up. It's better than any Korn album that came after it, but it really showcases the band fitting their sound into a cookie cutter to crank out. While the self-titled debut actually felt like Jonathan Davis had things to say about childhood trauma, this feels too glossy, too produced, too manufactured by comparison. It's got a couple catchy singles, but it's also got an abysmally cringey Fred Durst guest appearance. It's not the worst album ever. It (probably) doesn't deserve a 1. But this is a relic of a bygone era when angsty teen edgelords were a huge marketing demographic. What does this say to anyone now? Your dad really thought no one understood him? I would expect that the people who grew up with this album (those that don't work in gas stations or sell meth for a living) would be really embarrassed by this. Lord knows I am.
Not my jam but it did bring me back to hanging out with my brother and his friends.
I really liked Korn when I was a young person. In the same vein as Slipknot and Disturbed. It's fire when you hate the whole fucking world. But like, as an older dude. It doesn't hit anywhere near as hard as I thought it would. I won't allow myself to cringe over my teenage years. But if I did, this is one of those albums that would get that cringe lol.
Hard-rock. Ik kan deze wel hebben. Zanglijn is soms best melodieus en de muziek heeft soms geinige geluidjes. Maar over het algemeen is het niet mijn ding en het gaat op den duur zelfs vervelen. **
Thought it started out ok but it went steadily downhill
Took 2 weeks to listen to the whole album.
Very close to being good in an ironic way. Don't understand how anyone could listen to this straight faced and say it was good
Blast from the past; I tried so hard to get into this album when I was in high school, being a huge fan of the first two. But Follow the Leader never really clicked for me and still doesn't. Most of the songs seem to be trying to recapture the sound that made them big, but with a few exceptions it comes off as kind of flat.
When I first got into metal, nu was all but on the way out, and what I heard from the bands still getting radio play didn't impress me, including Korn. I've tried to give them a shot here and there in the years since and... yeah, still not a fan. I found this very annoying, actually. Probably my least favorite album so far. F
I thought the rhythms in this album were pretty enjoyable to listen to. I really hate metal, but this one didn’t feel as bad in the beginning. I think the drumming was the main aspect keeping my attention throughout this album, but as the album progresses, the rhythms generally become less interesting. Ice Cube is also there which was a bit of a shock listening through. However, this album is also fairly long, and it feels like an eternity going through it. I get the appeal of this album, but I still did not enjoy going through it. Favorite track: Got the Life
Some cool sounds and beats but the vocals are goofy and I couldn’t buy in
I was a bit skeptical about this album when it first popped up, but honestly sometimes I do feel like a freak on a leash Much of what I said about Antichrist Superstar applies here. The music for this album is actually pretty cool, and I wonder what this album would sound like if you removed the sensitive boi lyrics and left just the instrumentals. I like Korn's lyrics far better than Manson's, but to be fair I like reading the ingredients in a shampoo bottle better than Marilyn Manson's lyrics. The production on this album is really clean, which makes it easy to listen to. I understand better now why people liked it so much in the 90s than I did then. Honestly, I was kind of digging it minus the childishness of the lyrics. Then All in the Family brings the album to a grinding fucking halt. The combination of homophobia and bad rapping is absolutely crucifying. Traditionally, rappers make diss tracks about other rappers, rather than inviting those rappers on the album to diss them back, but I guess Korn's approach to shitting on themselves works too. Unfortunately, it also drops this album's rating to 2/5 because I had to sit through it 2/5 2/5
Not really my jam. Not really my jelly, either. Nor Vaseline(tm). It's a bit too much rage for me. I do respect that they have built their own font. That's not nothing.
Wasn't really a fan of this one. Thought the instrumentation was pretty basic, just loud. Loud... I think that word really applies to this. The vocals are a bit off-putting here. There were moments where I was listening to this and *almost* got into a song or two. Then they started singing. It feels like there's little variation in the lyrics and the tone. The angstiness of it gets old after about 20 minutes. The lyrics are on an unnecessary spectrum between annoyingly vulgar and downright offensive. Homophobia doesn’t make your album any better, lads. That's another thing about this record, its LONG. Too long for how much the songs sound the same. The instrumentation here is pretty basic. Not really worth talking about. I feel like I've been excessively harsh on this one, considering that I only got the time to listen through to it once, but I can't bring myself to listen to those cringeworthy vocals/lyrics again. Nevertheless this album is punctuated by better moments, so isn't quite bad enough to warrant a one. Overall I'd give this one two stars. It's okay. It's great (probably) if you're an angsty teenage boy who's cross about homework or whatever kids do these days, but I didn't find it particularly appealing. Maybe I'm getting old...
It was ok, not my cup of tea. I used to hear a lot of this sort of music in Metros. It's ok to mosh to when you're out with your mates in a club, but at home it's actually not that interesting.
Not for me
This has aged quite badly. Really outdated lyrically
2.8 - I actually sort of like what these guys are laying down - the guitar riffs are nasty, the vocals are angry and intense in a "fuck-the-world" kind of way, and their sonic palate is broader than other nu metal bands I've heard. I could see blasting some of these songs if I'm having a bad day. But the anger turns hateful, homophobic and misogynistic, which makes the vibe feel anti-social.
Overall, not for me. Too screamy and angry. I enjoy the hip hop songs tho- those were dope.
Eh not my thing.
Pretty good for being trash metal, but for 14 years olds only
Can see this being a pretty good album but too heavy for me
Another one I'm not too fond of, mostly because I don't know how to feel about it. Korn somehow makes a 4.5 minute song feel like a 9 minute song, and I'm not sure if that's good or not. The guy also really wants to be a guitar with metal skatting? idk if it works but just imaging them recording it in a studio is hilarious to me The album cover slaps though
I know it's a good example of the genre, I just hate the genre. Doesn't help that Fred Durst was on it
While there were a few parts I liked, I didn't enjoy this album as a whole. The musicianship is definitely solid, but the tracks were way too chaotic for my taste. The vocals aren't quite my cup of tea either. I'd give it 2.5 stars but will round it down because I thought the ending track of the album was pretty horrendous.
Actually... I didn't hate it. There were good moments in there but stuff that could be cut. It didn't need to be over an hour long
Different
Weirdly I was kinda looking forward to this. I was in Middle/High School around this time and while I was never a huge fan of these bands, I definitely listened to some of this stuff since it was omni-present. Never owned or fully listened to this record but I remembering liking Freak on a Leash. Wow, this has not aged well at all. Particularly the lyrics. So much homophobia everywhere and it sounds so stupid and childish. "All in the Family" is particularly stupid. Musically, the vocalist is pretty annoying. He's a bit nasal when he's singing and his guttural screams are a bit annoying too. They sounds kind of put-on if that makes sense. He's not really an MC at all and has no flow on the rap-like tracks. About the only time he's interesting is when he does his freak-out scat-type stuff. The guitar work is sometimes interesting. Some weird modulation stuff going on with the west coast whistle style sounds in between the harder metal parts. The heavy parts aren't that interesting and don't sound that well recorded to me. The record is also too long. Definitely falls in that 90's CD-era where every record had too many songs on it just because they could. Overall, it's pretty weak - especially in 2021.
Really never have been a fan of the genre or Korn but it's not bad, just not my thing. Like that they mixed in Ice Cube and Fred Durst in a couple songs though. 5/10
I didn't hate this as much as I thought I would, there are SOME redeeming things here. There is some interesting instrumentation in the background. The guitars are plagued by that super-midrange-late-90s metal sound that is so cliche. I don't mind "dark", and I can sort of see that they are kind of self-aware that a bunch of this is pretty dumb. I had friends who listened to Korn in HS and I never got into it then. The "scatting" that they do that's a buncha weird noises is hilariously dumb and is a trope now, it made me laugh at least. But you know, I bet it would be entertaining to see Korn live during this album's tour, I'd never listen to it on my own but in that setting I'm sure it would be at least interesting. It's not boring that's for sure.
Tracks 2 and 3 are keepers. The rest of the songs can go. Definitely marks a demarcation point between Woodstock ‘94 and ‘99.
Loud
It's on - ok? freak on a leash - nice start. Different. Then degenerates into some unpleasant madness! got the life - not sure i like this much. Very shouty, gets better when it goes on. dead bodies everyhere: just a bit unpleasant. children of the korn - pretty out there too. BBK: I like the start of this. Pretty - not bad! All in the family : nasty. Homophobic? reclaim my place - also not very nice Justin Seed Cameltosis my gift to you Didn't enjoy it much but I can see what they are trying to do
Just... Really not my kind of music. Semi-enjoyed Children of the Korn and All in the Family though when they crossed genres a bit. And I realize I have bias against them so that gives a slight bump
Really looses steam after Got The Life. Glad it exists for the kids that need it.
Oh, kinda not appreciated. Не ценитель, не стал ценителем. Мне было скучно и даже грустно слушать этот альбом, я не узнал чего-то нового, я не испытал прилива энергии. До следующего раза.
New Metal just isn't an area of interest and save one single this album doesn't hold much appeal.
Not a hot take, edgy does not mean good. Well, actually, edgy kind of just holds me back from enjoying something to the fullest. The music had its charm but hoo boy the vibes were off. I'll stick to my own taste in metal.
It's real poison which I guess will resonate with some people but it's music to make the spirit ill. 'got the life' is a tune though.
I honestly enjoyed it for a few songs but Korn is the epitome of a singles band, not an album band to me. Also the music is very simple and dated. I loved "Life is Peachy" when I was in middle school, but I was at military school when this came out so I didn't have much nostalgia for it (Military School was my intro to hip hop, no one listened to metal or grunge there). Cringy lyrics, boring AF and waaaaaaaaaaaay too long (thank in large part to filler) at an hour and 10 minutes.
Don't love Korn. This wasn't great.
I dont like it..... Not my music at all......... Ice cube was cool tho. 1.5
this is the first album to offend me. I was a huge Korn and loved the nu-metal scene. It jumped the shark hard and became a joke. This is the album that killed the scene. Overproduced and inauthentic.
Not a fan of the genre.
I'm okay with the music, but the dark imagery got old pretty quick. Not really my cup of tea
My brothers favourite album from the 90s
Woof.
Nostalgia and groove, but serious offenders of nickel-backing
A couple cool grooves but any listening of the lyrics left me completely turned off
Oh Korn. Reading more into the band and specifically the singer, it's clear that this music isn't about "pretending to be hardcore" as I'd originally assumed. Johnathan Davis had a very traumatic life in a lot of ways, and he's trying to channel that here into something good and I think he deserves credit for that. I think Nu-Metal is a really shit genre but Davis deserves credit for like, creating it? It deserves to be on the list for sure, but it's definitely not a personal favorite. "Dead Bodies Everywhere" "Reclaim My Place" are the best tracks.
Takes me back to my early teen years. Freak on a Leash was great back then but listening to the lyrics of the album as an adult... A bit out there "Tie my pecker to a tree..." I appreciate the trailblazing of a new genre, but I think I've outgrown KoRn
Nostalgia trip that didn't quite hold up. Freak on a leash still slaps, but Davis' voice and lyrics no longer resonate. All in the family and children of the Korn are terrible.
Though many kids talked about this album due to it's shock value. They didn't consider how shock value becomes irrelevant as something more shocking comes out. This album probably will not stand this test of time.
It has it's moments, but overall i have a hard time with the style and feel of the album
1998: Freak On a Leash, Children of the Korn
Some moments.... mostly not. What’s the scatting all about??
The sonic equivalent of being fucked by a chainsaw.
Nobody needs to hear this before they die. An unnecessary moment in musical history.
In the words of Michael Scott: NOOO, GOD! NO, GOD, PLEASE, NO! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Sorry but Nu Metal is just awful.
Far and away the worst genre out there. Rating: 1.4
Freak On A Leash is the funny song everyone knows, Got The Life is the one that's actually kind of ok, and everything else is godawful The thing is, I don't think this is getting a one because it very much sounds like itself. Even the Korn imitators never quite sounded like Korn. This is both praise and insult. It might still get a one. I'd give the album after this a three probably. Issues should have been on here instead of Follow The Leader even if Follow The Leader is the one everybody knows.
Really not for me
I'm quite nostalgic to freak on a leash but I can only take so much of Korn. There is something appealing about their sound for like one or two songs and then I'm done.
this album made me feel like a freak on a leash the way i went bumdadabumnamnamema dabumdadabumnamnamema having a song called "all in the family" and then alluding to That, sure is a choice! i don't think ive heard music that invokes this much 4chan energy ever, and that shit didnt even exist yet when this came out
if you eat corn and then go to the bathroom sometimes there's corn in your toilet and obviously it's already gross but somehow the corn makes it way more gross, that's what this album is about I think
Umm badummmm dum bada da Umm badummmm dum bada da Umm badummmm dum bada da
this is bad homophobic edgelord rap battle fred durst bad
This is awful. But my ears did prick up when I heard the bagpipes on one track - My Gift to You. Other tracks truly dreadful with many unpleasant sentiments in the lyrics.
What began as a pretty painful listen quickly turned into a torturous exercise. This was detestable in every regard. Musically, it was completely devoid of anything remotely interesting. All that scat-beatboxing that plagued the album was already stale by its first appearance, and its inclusion on the majority of tracks was a truly baffling decision. Mixed with the occasional rap verse, it made for an excruciating listen. And, lyrically, it actively annoyed me. I suppose this album was aimed at alienated youth in the US, but I found its approach as to where to direct that anger and alienation to be entirely misguided. On a smaller note, both the album cover and the band name are awful. Thank God Nu-Metal is largely a thing of the past.
Very very bad. Maybe two songs on here I actually could listen to again. The Britney Spears of Nu Metal. 3.5/10 Top song Got the life
Terrible.
Heard Before? Sad but true. I was in high school and all the worst people loved this. Notes: - my oldest kid discovered 90s pop-punk and nu-metal at age 16, binged all of it, purchased an actual Korn vinyl for real money, and then less than a year later realized their terrible mistake and has been trying to forget all these songs ever since. - all this is to say that the cultural weight of nu-metal makes it difficult for me to engage with it as actual music, which it certainly is. i don't enjoy judging bands by their fans or image, but here we are. - this is stupidly written but well-produced, decently arranged, competently and passionately played. i hate every second of it. - i really despise all the guitar tones, and the same dumb tricks used in every song. Verdict: We all have terrible feelings inside of us. There are better ways to deal with them. Listen Again? Thankfully unlike some of the overplayed garbage on 1001, this one is easy to avoid.
Worse than I remember
Korn are definitely interesting, what they are doing is incredibly weird, nice clashes of discordant sounds, great drumming, satisfying crunchy guitars but the vocalist sounds like a deep gargling toilet flush. The random outbursts of scat singing sound comedic, but are performed with such intensity that I’m not sure that there’s any tongue in cheek element. When he is being more conventional it’s ridiculously intense “dead bodies everywhere!” He’s going for a posturing ‘deep’ aesthetic which I find hard to take seriously. It’s a shame that the vocals are so ever present because instrumentally I love this thing!
Had low expectations and it met them. Certainly not my cup of tea
First song was kind of a 3 star and every song after that took away a half star. So this should get a negative 3 star review if I could. Just horrible - but then look at the singer.
Oh god more late 90s nu metal. Lyrics are so fucking cringe. Actively difficult listen
Nu-metal skatting is pretty much the worst sound ever committed to tape.
What an appalling drudgery this listen was. Wretched in conception and execution. This is gonna show my age but this hardly qualifies as music.
Just a ridiculous pile of stupid preteen slop. Whoever told the singer that his weird scat singing sounded cool should apologize because he lied. Each song is a fresh window into menacing world of a 12 year old boy. It’s gonna take about five great albums to wash the taste of this shitpile out of my ear mouths.
I have nothing nice to say about this album.
Not a genre where I want to listen to an entire album. Music that feeds the rage. For me, feminist rage, but I can understand appeal for some. “Dead Bodies Everywhere” is screamed into my ear repeatedly. Other sample lyric, “It’s time to die, is that what I want?” Possibly, if I listened to this album on repeat. That being the case, I sort of liked “Freak on a Leash” and “Children of the Korn.” “All in the Family” is a dickish diss track between Korn and Limp Bizkit, which shows that band has some type of sense of humor, albeit juvenile guy. I give it a “1” even though music isn’t bad. Lyrically, problematic, and could have done without last song, “banter” at the start of the song. Of course, I’m not in the target audience for this album.
🤮 lame as fuck
N O P E
Nu metal did something to Gen X and made them insufferable as a collective.
How to listen to this album: 1) Listen and laugh. 2) Turn off album. 3) Put on Mazzy Star's 2nd album. 4) Realize that the 90s was full of amazing music not included in book. 5) Write Robert Dimery. 6) ??? 7) Profit!
No thanks, these are nasty, infantile little boys. Being crude does not have value on its own and needs to be pared with something else to raise it up. This is music for boys who haven't matured since puberty. They need to go wash their mouth out and spend some time with adults.
instrumentally this album is ehh. vocally... there's a lot to talk about. it all just feels so angry and full of hatred, there's tons of misogyny and homophobia throughout. it feels like ragebait in musical form. i guess it probably also appeals to its intended audience of middle school bullies. the vocal style is very whiny and obnoxious and there's the occasional weird scat singing that just makes me pause for a second and actually laugh at the absurdity of it. was quite ready to be over with this by the end.
Couldn't finish it. The two singles are decent enough - not my taste but they had a uniqueness to them at the time which means I don't hate them - and the first song was OK, but the rest? I got as far as the terrible one with Fred Durst and bailed. I'm a completionist but not THAT much of a completionist.
Really dont like Korn. I am sure my 20 year old self would have loved it though. I think i might have just lost my angry
Oof, an hour and 7 minutes of exactly what expected. Loud, noisy, raw, childish, whiny. Undoubtedly popular and unfortunately influential, but absolutely not my thing. Usually I avoid reading other reviews until I am finished with or very near the end of an album, but here I felt like I had heard everything I needed to four tracks in. Having now finished the album, I can confirm this was true. A real endurance test. I see that 8 of the top 10 reviews are one-star reviews. Deserved. Justified. My favourite other review of this points out that Korn's appeal, probably, is in their apparent trangressions and adolescent taboo-breaking, which a teenager would probably love. I think I filled this gap in my life with the Butthole Surfers, who I still think are great. I think I always thought that Korn sucked, and I think I always will.
This is some seriously godawful shit. I know there’s people who had a tough time growing up, dealing with school, getting picked on. I know, I was one of them. But this is just whiny angsty white kid bullshit. Goth kids are tougher than this guy, who sounds like a kid pissed off cuz he didn’t get a Nintendo for his birthday. Crap like this gave us Woodstock ‘99 and beyond.
Why can't you just make nice music that sounds good and an album that is an appropriate length? For goodness sakes. I can't relate to this on any level, what emotions am I supposed to get from this screaming? Fuck knows. Fred Durst came on to shout some slurs, that was a nice intermission. Any gays that listen to this.... electric chair.
torn between giving this a 1 or a 2, but i went through this whole album pleading with it to end so i think it's gotta be a 1. i know i'm clouded by not being particularly fond of metal but i hated the scratchy vocals, thought this was very generic, all the works really.
Two good songs (the two big ones), like eight songs that are meh to bad by Korn's standards (I am no great Korn fan to be fair), and then three or so of the worst novelty songs you have ever heard in your life . Should've been their first album on here, I think this is my least favorite of their first four and again I am no big Korn fan.
I fell behind on the list because it took me so long to get through this one.
Solid album.
The Venn diagram of dudes who were into Hard Now(!) bands and MAGA really should be investigated.
Awful album. Terrible band. Worst music genre.
I’m not ruining my weekend by listening to this album.
Saved? ❌ Would listen again? ❌ Would recommend to anyone? ❌ Would buy on Vinyl? ❌
Fucking agonizing
I did not listen. I know i will not like this. Sorry Korn!
I assume Korn actually set out to be annoying, because there's no other explanation for the array of silly voices on this album. So congrats, lads - mission accomplished.
It’s better than some of the ithe metal albums. I liked Children of the Korm but mainly because of Ice Cube. Interesting to hear the Pharcyde on a track too. 1.5
TOO DARK
I'd rather listen to this than Radiohead, but not by much.
Skipped through this as beyond dumb. Not for me.
?????? So bad. Like, visceral reaction bad.
So... uh... I guess I was wrong to give yesterday's cryptic Icelandic post rock a 1 when there are things like this in the world...
A new low bar has been set.
yikes
think this might be my first dnf i just cldnt do this mess today not for me
Yeuch!
After listening to this I somehow now have an STD, a ungodly huge pickup truck with fender flares and oversized tires and Punisher stickers on the back window, an ex girlfriend and a little boy who I see every other weekend and I’m behind on my child support payments. I also have a drinking problem and my social media feed is filled with bimbos. This singer wishes they had Mike Patton’s talent but they don’t. Nu Metal is hot garbage music for adolescent, angry children.
No me gusta mucho el heavy metal
DNF
What a cruel list to give something like this the day after Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys. Talk about a contrast. Going to give it a fair listen though, as I do everything. But don’t anticipate being a big fan. Early on, and it’s just loud and somehow whiny industrial sounding metal. They call this nu metal, and it’s one of those genres that I can pick out when I hear it, even if I don’t really understand it. Very late 90s angry vibes. I remember Freak on a Leash and it’s certainly a better sounding version of this sound. Catchier. There are a few better songs that have less of an ugliness to them. Got The Life is better than a lot of the rest of this. As a whole though, this album is noisy and unremarkable and unlikeable. You get past those few first songs and there’s such a sameness to it all. And it’s 70 minutes long for some insane reason. Isn’t for me. 1/5. Probably as far away from anything I would choose to put on. Finishing listening was a chore.
Why is there so much NuMetal on this list? NuMetal objectively sucks. And these guys are mainly to blame for it becoming a thing. NuMetal is the anti-Reese's, two great tastes that DO NOT go great together (steps off NuMetal soapbox). Freak On a Leash was the song that did it. I can see why Fred Durst thought he could do this. What is with the weird mouth guitar bridge? Got the Life is like a shitty Nine Inch Nails cover. Wait a minute! Is Trent Reznor to blame for NuMetal? This might be the exact moment Ice Cube jumped the shark. They are better than Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, all the names with the stupid K replacing other letters. Oh my god, Fred Durst is on this album. The song is like joke song between Jonathan Davis and Fred Durst and it sucks. There are no two less hard dudes in history than these two assholes on this song. I can confirm, NuMetal sucks. Closing with a bunch of longer songs when I'm already tired of this nonsense is not helping. Well, now I like the Pharcyde less. These dudes are horny in the least palatable way possible. Jonathan Davis has the same hairline and hairstyle as The Predator. Thanks for the stupid conversation, glad that could be memorialized. God, the lyrics to Earache My Eye are laughably bad.
Guessed this right in the 90’s and 00’s. Korn sucks.
Really weird and alternative sound, not a fan of metal in the first place and this one was far too experimental for me.
A couple songs in, I thought that this albums greatest offense would be thst it's actually kind of boring. Then, Fred Durst drops in to help drop some casual homophobia, and I almost wished it went back to just boring.
The soundtrack to every school shooting
The only song I could relate to was "Reclaim My Place" where the singer is screaming "What the fuck?" over and over. WTF indeed. I could feel brain cells dying as I listened to this noise.
Really? One of the worst nu metal album ever made recommended as one of the 1001 albums to absolutely listen in your life? No thanks. I remember, when the singles taken from this album were popular, me and my friends wondering how Korn could fall so low. Not that nu metal is a great genre per se, but this is embarassing: by comparison Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park's records are Beethoven's sonatas. Avoid, don't listen to, and forget it.
DEAD BODIES EVERYWHEEEEERRRRREEEEEE
Wasn’t expecting to get much from this. And didn’t. Didn’t need to hear this, nu-metal? Very predictable. Best I can think of. Rage, angst, tortured etc etc they maybe feel it's 100% real, maybe. But if you don't like it, it's campy slasher movie posturing, with not so pleasant ideology, cameltosis and the family ones were particularly ugly little turds, generations angry young (turns out not so young) men with guitars to upset your parents at 14yrs. 14 million copies sold?? Really not sure what to make of that. Humanity can be fairly much in the toilet? Still didn't need to hear, particularly some of those ugly little moments, but have now, may have been 2 stars for the music but a particularly dirty time had, and even worst just googled and these "people" were late 20s when they made this not teens, what can you say, 1 Star
I'm not a fan of the production--the tight drum and this bass sound don't really do it for me. Plus the homophobia, even though it's explained away by the band, is not really good enough. When you put something in the world there needs to be awareness. There are some good touches here and there, so it's a shame.
How did this make the list but Tool and Deftones did not?
Bränn alla kopior, sprid askan i mount doom. Tack men nej tack.
I don’t want to be dismissive of entire genres of music, because there’s usually someone doing something worthwhile in any given style, but nu metal might be the exception here. I get that Korn is influential and that’s it’s possible to make an argument for their inclusion on this list, but that doesn’t change that this album is utter garbage. And if this is a high water mark of the genre… I like heavy music and this just sucks. The drop tuned riffs are boring, amateur level playing at best, the drumming brings nothing to it, the vocals are crap. That’s not even getting into the juvenile grievance, the misogyny, the homophobia running through the entire thing. If I can say anything positive about this album is that it’s making me reevaluate my criteria for one-star ratings because this is by far the worst album I’ve come across on here so far.
