Boring. Generic sounding.
li
I really wanted to like this.
Afskaplega róleg og notaleg plata. Ekki minn tebolli samt.
I think I might like a different album by Gillian Welch, but this specific one was just a little boring to me as a whole. Best tracks: My First Lover and Ruination Day Pt. 2
Pari ensimmäistä biisiä jaksoi nauttia hyvällä fiiliksellä, mutta loppua kohden alkoi puuduttamaan. Voisin kuvitella tämän toimivan jossain kesäisessä mökkirannassa kun rauhassa hörppii kahvia ja tuijottaa ongen kohoa vedessä.
I can take or leave this. The 2nd to last track was enjoyable. Overall, sparse, dark folk.
It's mid
Don't think I've ever heard of this. Opening dissonant chords are always good. For some reason, track 8, Ruination Day, Pt. 2, is not available on Spotify? Hmm, not sure about the change the second track took. All of the sudden it sounds like Oh Brother Where Art Thou, but like in a neutral way, one of the songs I'm not super into. Hmm. Now with track 3, Dear Someone, I'm starting to feel like this is too close to country for my enjoyment. Bluegrass, that's the genre. Some nice vocal harmonies and lyrics in April the 14th, Pt. 1. The next track isn't my thing, though. Feels a bit cliché, but I guess I get it. Kind of turns the old-timey gospel bluegrass on its head, makes the savior rock. Damn, I Dream a Highway is almost 15 minutes long. I love Dream Theater, but this is too boring to be this long.
Boring
Some enjoyable bluegrass, some less enjoyable bluegrass (too slow), and some even less enjoyable country. Gillian is a great songwriter, and I like her voice, but most of this didn't do it for me. Enjoyed the title track though.
Fine.
first song was good but just not for me
Ehh not for me but not as bad as UB40 2/5
Strong start, repetitive finish.
I tried to like it as it's a genre of music that I find myself listening to more often these days. It never pulled me in.
Not really a country fan
indie country singer open mic night, ft. repeated lyrics
Very middle of the road, very forgettable
Slow, sad country music solely comprising Welch's voice and acoustic guitar. Although a bit too snail paced for my tastes, it could have been a personal and delicately beautiful album. However, the excruciatingly lame "Elvis Presley Blues" and country trope laden "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll" totally ruin it. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Revelator Date listened: 10/08/22
Zzzzzzzzzz
Not really my sort of thing at all, but no bad as far as this genre goes.
Great voice. But country folk.
Trying to understand what is novel in this album.
Yeah, this is not a preferred flavour of guff. It's tolerable, which is more than can be said for other examples of this sort of guff, but there are too many occasions where she sounds like she's singing with her eyes shut.
idk, its just not for me. i don't think welch's voice is very strong, even for the singer-songwriter genre. pretty boring album.
Country really isn't my thing, though this album was considerably less grating than a lot of country is. I enjoyed the melancholic atmosphere more than any of the songs, and I think this helped me make it through the whole thing.
Nope
Lots of wailing
I tried giving this two listens to see if it would connect with me but It really didn't. She's obviously a talented songwriter and a few of the tracks appealed to me but overall it's not my thing.
I feel like I wanted to like this but ultimately switched to my own music before it was over. Not bad at all, I guess just not for me.
Sparsely instrumented Country. I'm not a big country fan, but don't mind listening to the genre from time to time. This album, however, doesn't vibe with me. Revelator and April the 14th, Pt. 1 are O.K.ish, though. But generally I find the songs and singer's voice a bit irritating. 2/5.
Just kind of meh, it's a country crooner album. She's a singer-songwriter with a guitar. She's got some good lyrics and a good voice, so while it's well done it's very low-energy kind of depressing so not my jam.
I fell asleep
BORING AS HELL
So slow you forget what she's singing about by the time she gets to the end of each line. Zero energy in a lot of the tracks and just... depressing.
Good for what it is but not a country fan - sorry
Started listening to this, fell asleep and woke up irritated
Just not my scene
Just the same folk country as usual
Okay I guess? Didn't give me a headache like most country does
Mediocre. What more can I say. I noticed another reviewer stated that the only reason this didn't get a 1 was because of "I Want To Sing That Rock and Roll". I completely agree. Its the only standout on an otherwise not very inspiring album. However, after that 14 minute "I Dream A Highway", I did almost reverse myself and give it a 1.
Que weba de guitarrita.
Too country-adjacent for me to enjoy. It's not absolute hate, but it isn't good for me.
chill country. don't like that second half 2.5
This started strong, and I thought it might be alternative enough to be likable, but it retreated back more and more into the country as it went on. Not for me.
Boring
Songs: Revelator
Wouldn’t listen on my own again, too slow. I like her voice and the guitars though.
Simple, nice songs. 2nd listen.
It sounded very similar to June Carter and family - but not similar enough
Not really into it. Very same-sounding throughout.
58. Faz tanto sol. Sou sombra difusa. Derreto. MotA: Everything Is Free "Darling, remember / When you come to me"
Helt lyssningsbart! Bäst: "Everything Is Free" och gitarrsolot på "I want to sing that rock and roll"
It was alright. Probably won't listen to it again.
A handful of great songs but the country vibes are too much for me
-The blues-y (?) guitar on "My First Lover" was interesting -overall just a woman singing and playing acoustic guitar

This ain't for me
I fell asleep. Had to listen again. Almost fell asleep again.
Some NPR garbage.
An album making me wish it would end deserves 1 star. I really didn't like it and then 15 minutes of repeating lyrics and minimal guitar started and made me wish I could make time move faster. Why is this considered one of the best albums ever..... I don't hear it
Very much not for me.
Took a trip to boring town frrrrr
chato pa caralho
Urgh
Anything from the 21st century piques my interest. That being said, this country-ish singer-songwriter stuff just didn't do it for me. Boring, unclear why it's on this list, couldn't wait for it to end. 1*
Tylsääkin tylsempi. 1/5
Nope.
If you get a few whiskeys in my aunt & uncle on a hot summer's evening, the guitars will come out and they sound just like this Getting PTSD flashbacks listening to this, or maybe a little better Is this really considered one of the most amazing 1001 albums ever recorded in the history of music? A hard No!
Fuck me, is this shit!
Sorry, what happened? I fell asleep
Boring and torturously bad!!!
Couldn't do it to myself.
me duermo. No sabía que odiaba este género!!
Man, this is probably the most disappointing album on this thing so far. From its Wikipedia I had imagined some sort of female Nick Cave with murder ballads and characters and stories and drama. Instead it’s dull, insipid, samey and oh so slow. I had to resist the urge to switch it off, I got so annoyed. Absolutely not for me
Pass
I Want To Sing That Rock And Roll
Pretty boring to be honest
Boring & annoying country folk
SO BORING!!! there were moments i thought could be enjoyable but it never quite got there, also, fuck that last song
Honestly quite dull
This was bad country music to me
I love country. I love good solid old country. I even like some modern country. This just sounds like someone’s cat being strangled.
Bäst är Everything is free.
Nope. I have tried to approach everything on this list with an open mind, but something about this type of music just rubs me up the wrong way. Maybe it's the vocal stylings. Maybe it’s the banjos. Maybe it’s the turgid pace. I don’t know but I really do think one could live a full life without having to listen to this.
Hippy dippy country crap
Really tough listen. Slow, folky, boring.
Thank goodness I've got to go to a funeral later, it might cheer me up a bit after listening to this depressing nasal whining.
Precious time on earth wasted listening to this btw
Keech!
1.0 - Awful
It’s not for me
Oof, this one was really bad. Another one that I didn’t make it all the way through… I just couldn’t take it anymore. I found myself dissociating to my happy place while I patiently waited for the sound of someone strangling a cat to be over. This was a horror movie mashup of country, bluegrass, folk, and blues, but done by a little white girl instead of an old black man or a weathered cowboy. Where does she get off with this kind of blatant appropriation? I actually found myself getting mad while listening to this. Not only because it sucks, not only at the nerve of this woman, but also at the obvious manufacture fakeness of it all.
This was fairly terrible. And any hope of a merciful 2 was lost with that never-ending stunt of a last track.
i aint listening to all that
You know it's not great when I forgot I wasn't listening to the last album
Not my vibe
I mean, it's nice on the ears? Mundane lyrics (especially because 90% of them get repeated 3 times) and doesn't do anything special in regards to instrumental either. I don't love folk or country (which this is kind of a blend of, but mostly folk I guess), but I don't really hate either of them either. But this simply gets very boring after a while with the repeating lyrics, folk will have to have good lyrics or producing/instrumentals to appeal. This has neither in my opinion, but she does have the calming voice down pat. ( I did like the first and last songs of the album somewhat, but that isn't enough to redeem the album for me )
While I appreciate the simple approach and instrumentation, this album was boring and uninspired. Not a single song, lyric, or message connected with me…felt like something anyone could produce. 1/5
Among the most banal recordings ever produced. I don't understand how people who can clearly play and sing could be comfortable making something so aggressively bland. Put Americana in its rightful place alongside post-WWII Big Band, Easy Listening, and New Age as music made for/ marketed to very earnest people who want to like music but find artistry jarring.
not impressed
This folk album unfolds like an old quilt—hand-stitched from sparse guitars, steady harmonies, and weary reflections, for some its beauty might ly in the worn simplicity while others including me might find it numbingly simple.
Not my style of music
The return of my least favourite music genre of all, fair play diva but it's not for me
Boring.
Another artist I have never heard of before and now I know why. I liked one song, Elvis Presley Blues, not because of the musicianship but because of the subject matter. I tried checking out her other stuff but I wasn't impressed. I'm glad I discovered this artist though. Should I ever hear them, I can now impress people by saying I know this random Americana artist.
Boring.
In an alternate universe where I am a terrorist holed up in Guantanamo Bay, this collection of tunes blasting out would have me confessing to being John Paul II (who I wouldn't actually be in that alternate universe) within seconds. When I started this project, I vowed I'd listen to every album from start to finish. This is number 80-something. I will not listen to it to the end. Maybe some miracle happened before the end? I don't know. They chose those first couple of tracks for the first two on the album and, for me, it was pure torture. Why on earth is this on the list?
Let me steal something that I read about this, but that perfectly represents my thoughts on it: "It wasn’t offensive to the ears or anything. I just could not connect to it in any way"
Not a fan
I'd never heard of Gillian Welch until last week. She was mentioned on a podcast that I listen to, and a snippet of a song of hers was played. From that small sample, I was really impressed by her singing, so I've been looking forward to reviewing this album. Also, this will be my second album in a row from 2001, and also my last album from 2001. Here's hoping that Gillian Welch will build upon the great first impression she made with me! Unfortunately, my hopes for this album were dashed. I think the biggest letdown for me was that I was expecting some really fantastic vocals, and the vocals just didn’t live up to that expectation. I can’t remember what song I heard a snippet of, and I’m too lazy to go and look right now, but I can’t help but wonder if I somehow tricked myself. The vocals weren’t bad, but they just weren’t this awesome voice that I was expecting. Additionally, the music on this album wasn’t particularly noteworthy either. I expect a country music album to really suck me into the world of the lyrics, but that just didn’t happen on this album. Since I wasn’t hooked in by the music, I really didn’t pay much attention to the songwriting. Even if I hadn’t built up this album in my head (even though it was only for a week), I don’t think I would have cared for it much. I wouldn’t be opposed to checking out more of Gillian Welch’s music, just to see if I’m insane or not, but this album wasn’t for me.
Not for me
Despite the guilt I feel, I must give this one star. It's just truly not my thing.
2/10
ahh
boring
Yee haw, let those gee tars play. This is a solid no from me. Why this list has so, so much country music on it is beyond me. Utter, utter pish.
Call it alt country or Americana or any other name it's still country and it's not for me. Add to the fact this album bored me to death just added to the slog.
Singing with banjo. 1/5
I never thought I'd listen to a mix of country and folk music... but here we are. In simpler terms... I hated this. Personal taste is more of a factor of that then the actual music though.
Boring
It’s not really something I would put on and enjoy. There’s something about the production I find to be “off”. It’s kind of boring and her voice is not very interesting
If I was walking by someone playing this in the park, I’d think something like “that doesn’t sound terrible.” Put that same person next to me while driving, and I’d want to crack their skull open. I listened to this while driving.
Bailed half way through. It sounds too much like church music, and not those chanting monks that were big in the early 90’s. Weirdo, small congregation, the pastor is definitely up to something fishy style church music 😒.
When I read Nashville and Tennessee, all my alarm bells go off. And then the "leading actress" plays the banjo, among other things. I wonder, what hell have you gotten yourself into now? And then I started listening. Maybe it's not so bad after all. But damn, exactly as I feared, I can't listen to that stuff. My toenails are curling up. Just get rid of it, quickly.
I had two thoughts while listening to this: 1. Lullabies for the country fried. 2. Music for cousin fuckers that want to feel like there’s something artful about it.
I found this incredibly dull. If I ever have trouble sleeping, I might revisit this.
Artiste inconnue. =>1/5
Yikes, this started off rough with the slowest song ever made. I hate the title song so much! And the rest don´t get better - its all so repetitive, and her voice is not my cup of tea. I hate it.
O matko... co za męka. Zupełnie nie mój klimat, nie trafia do mnie taka muzyka. Pewnie dałbym radę przesłuchać kilka razy i coś z tego wyciągnąć, ale nie czuję potrzeby, nie chcę tracić czasu, który mogę poświęcić innym artystom i utworom... Nie trafia do mnie to plumkanie, nie moja estetyka, nie mój styl, nie wzrusza mnie to. Nothing personal, Gillian ;_;
Billy music
Not for me. 1/5
My lord this album was so boring. Whether artists were talented or the lyrics were interesting didn't matter as after a couple songs I was completely checked out and couldn't wait for this to be over. I'm not sure why this makes the list as it sounded like so much other mundane coffee shop soft rock I've heard elsewhere. I would use this to put my infant child to sleep but honestly I don't ever want to listen to this again. I have no reason I needed to hear this before I die. Skip. 0.4 stars
Not my genre of music at all, and it didn't help that every song was extremely slow, and could serve as lullabies. At least it ended with a 14 minute, 44 second ballad that wasn't terrible. Favorite Song: "Life Is A Highway".
(Yawn…)
OK, Bluegrass singer. Not one of my favorites.
Not for me
nah
Relaxing for sure, but not really for me. If I listened to music in the background it would be ok but I want to really be able to connect with an album. Nice singing and guitar work but I don't really hear anything that stands out. I can't recall anything about what I just heard.
🙃

Super boring.
Juste non.
I’m glad I wasn’t near sharp objects when I listed to this.
soft country, its nice as background music for myself, but not a huge fan. Quite repetitive in terms of lyrics, and stretched out for most songs
Dog Shit
Meeeeeeeeehhhhhhh
I've found this album very monotonous, boring, slow and musically uninteresting. For some reason I can't relate to Americana/country in any way...The only positive about this album is that it's old style and not that over commercialised country music that was so popular in the past decades in the US.
This is really not for me. It bored me, it didn't bring anything new.
- I respect the voice and guitar playing but this is not for me - Didn't mind the faster/twangier songs, but a lot of them were way too slow - Boring to listen to imo
Sounds like a million other artists.
+2 stars for curing my insomnia, -1 cause I woke up flaccid and depressed.
Utter garbage. Track 1 set the tone and it didn't change.
I don't like this album at all. Country music is not my genre and while I can appreciate the vocal quality of Gillian something about her voice or tone of voice just doesn't click for me making this a double negative.
Some folky shit.
muy bonito y todo pero ño
singer-songwriter moonshine banjo style. not my style
Disco agradable folk, primera impresión nada sorprendente, pero buen disco acústico folk
I'm not sure I can handle this, why is the guitar not in tune?
Probably a bit harsh but it grated on me whilst I was trying to concentrate.
Country de cantautora. Lentísimo.
Bloody awful, how has this got anywhere near top 10000 let alone 1000
No lo conocía. 1 o 2 temas lindos. I want to sing that rock and roll"). All in all, not my cup of tea.
