Reviews (page 5 of 14)

Despite having a distinct, somewhat nostalgic fleur, the album remains a unique and enjoyable listen both lyrically and melodically, full of catchy controversy (which does feel tired here as opposed to Eminem's later records) and BOPs. However, the record is bleak in the wider context of contemporary rap music, especially in terms of beats and basses. Further, songs like "The Way I Am", "Marshall Mathers", "Remember Me?" etc. sound dated and irrelevant to the modern ear. The impact of the record also remains limited to put it politely: clown-like trolls with technical flow faded away and lost out to thought-provoking lyricists / "weed&chill" hip-hop artists, with very few exceptions in pale Eminem wannabees. Thank you for the adolescence memories and IAMTHESLIMSHADY, don't want to revisit this again.

Always wanted to hear a full Eminem album, and know more of his songs. And I'm damn glad I did!

This is truly a great album. Really creative rhyming schemes with a super adept delivery and flow to actually make them work. And then insanely catchy hooks to drive it all home. An interesting, humorous, and at times unfortunately poorly dated lyrical snapshot of that time, as edgy as the lyrics may be. Not to mention insane Dr Dre production.

"Eminem" was an experiment conducted by the US Army to help recruiters identify & select pliable high schoolers for military service. Thank You For Your Participation in The Marshall Mathers Project. DMX does the shock-jock horrorcore thing with a bit more verve but The MMLP has its place on the podium. The further Eminem in real life gets away from the persona, the stronger the album is. It's always been intended as a meathead meta-commentary on violence in culture & music, it's explicitly responding to critiques on violent music WRT Columbine while also intentionally encroaching on the hostility and violent imagery found on DMX's stuff or in Southern Hip-hop. It's not doing an egghead critique on it, and some of that misogyny/homophobia is real but the characters of the album are so heightened and offensive that it all comes across as the Grand Guignol interpretation of the popular alternative aesthetics - sort of like Gravediggaz a few years prior. It's not much different than like, Crass. It's goading and wants you to clutch your pearls, real Howard Stern stuff, but it's funny. The characters are roundly pathetic and Eminem creates enough distance between himself and his characters that I think it registers. The beats are also hot, the features are good. It's a strong effort for something that is unambigiously pretty juvenile. I get being annoyed or frustrated at the music if you were a high schooler in 1999-2009 and had to listen to your classmates bump this constantly & also totally miss the album's generally ironic character but it has kept its teeth sharp with time which goes to prove that it is a big flex with real talent underneath. Favorite Tracks: Stan, The Real Slim Shady, Remember Me?, Under the Influence

Everything about this is perfect--except when it's deeply misogynist and gay bashing. He even makes fun of himself for being terrible and seems to try and have it both ways. Perhaps he is creating terrible characters and claiming it's just a song, but this LP in particular is supposed to be him and it's very cringy. When he has other things to say the album is much better--Stan is maybe a top 5 rap track--I'm just not interested in his feuding with Kim, or Xtina, or NSYNC. That said, he is still unparalleled as a lyricist and the album slaps. A 3.5 for me, but bumping for critical acceptance.

It was a pretty good album. I was able to find two good songs on it

Few bangers in this album. Heavily influential at the time. Stan is such a tune and so different to what you’d expect from Eminem. Bitch Please II is another personal favourite

If there’s an Eminem album that screams Multiplayer Halo it’s this.

Can't argue that some of this is groundbreaking, Stan is a masterpiece n my opinion even if it unfortunately exposed us to more Dido. Lyrically great, funny and for the most part tongue in cheek (i hope).

Behind the OTT violence and questionably immature/mature content, there was always a fun album waiting to break out here. When it’s good it’s great. It goes places where no artist had gone before, like it or not. Te wordplay and rhyme scheme is top drawer. Loved the Dre influence on this album, they made a great team. Maybe not a seminal album, but definitely a statement piece of it’s time, and one I was happy to revisit.

Very dark. Brilliant lyrics, but hard to listen to.

Absolute banger.

Fastest f slurs/second

Extremely unique. Hard for me to fully enjoy just from a groove perspective, but definitely a singular work.

Better now than when I was 13

I go way back with this album. I don't feel a need to listen to it at this point in my life, but I've had great times with it.

Know this album VERY well, listened to it a billion times. Definitely still fun, but it's filled with a lot of dated pop culture references to stuff that isn't relevant anymore which kind of dates it a little. Still a fun listen years later though, 4.5 stars.

A Classic

Twisted, Batshit insane and dark themes. But you cant deny the lyricism, story-telling and the rap ability of Eminem (at least before he started releasing dumb shit like "just lose it"). 4/5

There’s no denying the brilliance here — Stan and The Real Slim Shady alone are enough to prove Eminem’s storytelling and rhythmic precision were on another level. You can practically hear the hours spent with the dictionary, mastering multisyllabic rhymes and internal patterns. But it’s also an album that can be hard to love; the same unfiltered honesty that fuels its genius is often wrapped in deep offensiveness and chaos. Sometimes I hate him, sometimes I’m amazed by him — and maybe that’s the point.

Like a Shakespeare comedy written by the human id

Really good rap album, but I think it's before Eminem got really good at chopping. He's still dealing with a lot of demons here.

i liked it more than i expected

Innovative fresh disturbing a showcase for his talent to evolve.

He definitely has his own style. ★★★★

I kinda hate that I enjoyed this as much as I did but there were so many of his better songs on here.

There’s a lot to unpack with this one - more than I’m willing to type on a phone. I was 23 when this album came out and its music and fans didn’t exactly match my vibe. Listening to it now I admire his vulnerability, even if I don’t like much of the substance. Some young white dudes did not know how to process this album in a healthy way and it showed. There is no doubt a thru line for a certain type of incel whose origin story can be traced back to it. Both they and the Eminem of 2000 could have used a hug. Still though, the boy got flow and a self deprecating humor I like.

really crazy to listen to this album with some distance. certain tracks are staggering - intensely wry lyrics spat out with that snide voice of his over earworm beat after earworm beat. 'stan', 'the real slim shady', 'drug ballad' - these and a few others have staying power I wouldn't have acknowledged without giving this a good relisten. that said, about half the album taps the well way past dry. the boy band bashing gets old, the self reflexive gay jokes annoyingly front and center, and holy fuck the song 'kim' should not have made it onto the release. jesus dude. all said though, a seminal album in which the quality sustains its influence.

Well really good rapping That dude got text Kim is unbearable wtf thats heavy

Well that sure is offensive, which I guess is the aim. Presume the anger of his white underclass US background is real. So meant to shock the middle classes? I am not trying to justify the fact I enjoy his ability to write a good rhyme, while displaying that much supposed hate at the world. The subject matter is all part of the package and he does it well, he isn't to my imited knowledge an actual violent person so it's a form of artistic expression. Like any horror or thriller book/film. It's more a reflection of the bad than It's the cause. Guess it can be seen as both therapeutic (pro art)and dangerous (ethical) and really depends on the listener. 4 Star

Some (many?) of the lyrics don't exactly hold up to modern sensibilities but overall I enjoyed my listen

It's a raw and controversial album, but still a very acclaimed and incredible record. The highlights are the most known songs, but the rest play their part too, despite the lyrics and sounds.

Some great stuff, although it falls off in the back half, and way too much bigotry. Interesting portrait of a furious young man.

Despite some lesser tracks after track 12, it remains an excellent album and certainly hallmark of my teenage years

Brutal lyrics, but highly entertaining.

i feel bad for liking this over dark twisted fantasy

The shit that Eminem did with some these beats is INSANE. I can still smell the weed I smoked listening to this.

Shocking yet humorous album that has very catchy tunes. He is definitely one of the best rappers in history. Must listen album for casual listeners as well as rap lovers.

Great album

It's a great album

I started this journey with a "judge the album by how consistently truthful it is" and this... happens to be the most truthful album I've heard yet. Incredibly challenging to listen to (that's the point), "Kim" is the worst there, and "Ken Kaniff" is a close second. Clearly he's enjoying playing the line between "am I insane or is it all a joke?" and he runs both directions while exploring that theme. It's immature, incredibly vulgar, disrespectful, violent, misogynistic, homophobic, racist... but again, that's the point. In a world devoid of morals because it's rejected God, this kind of behavior is, idk, expected. The beats are awesome and would be a pleasure to listen to without any lyrics. I'm going to knock a star off because the guest appearances seem like clowns next to Eminem's effortless flow.

Textbook Eminem here.

Liked it at the time and like it now. Drugs Ballad I still listen to regularly, really illustrates the Dre production with the speed change.

The guy rips his heart out on the album, and just sits there bleeding, sending banger after banger. It's deeply personal and it ain't pretty, just as art should be.

Sistnevnte har verten av Pimp My Ride rappe: Bitch, please, you must have a mental disease, so assume the position and get back down on your knees. Altså come on, det her er nesten på Dylan nivå (Hear the one with the mustache say Jeez, I can't find my knees). Ems beste, uten tvil. Noen duds, men pakket med gull.

Prime Eminem is GOATed

Old school Em is the best. Hot take here, but this is his last great album. I like the Slim Shady Eminem. Not really any of his other stuff. I don’t want seriousness, I want to hear him rapping about popping pills, slapping bitches, and not giving a fuck. And this is what we have. He’s one of the best rappers ever.

Look, this was a groundbreaking album when it came out and one that will be remembered forever in hip-hop history. Unfortunately I am a 26 year old man now, and the lyrics of this definitely have showed their age since when I thought this shit was cool at 11. Genuinely childish and immature, retarded and half of the skits are just completely unfunny now. Especially the Ken Kaniff shit. Imagine trying to portray yourself as some macho straight guy and then you go into the studio and make noises like you're sucking a guys dick. Eminem is definitely as closeted as it gets. No wonder Eminem is such a cringe lord today, it turns out he always was but we just had rose-tinted glasses when we were kids. The song where he acts out kidnapping and murdering his ex-wife is just disturbing and retarded. I'm still giving this a 4, but fuck me some of the songs on this thing were a struggle to get through. I do still listen to Amityvile, Drug Ballad, Criminal, and Kill You on a massively regular basis. So many hits on this thing.

My mum was right to stop me listening to Eminem. Young boys should not be listening to music where the main subject is kidnapping torturing raping and dismembering your bitch ex wife. For every track on here I fondly recall as just kinda goofy you get to a B-side track that you just listen to and go what the fuck man. Also 90’s/00’s rappers fucking HATE gays.

Not everything aged well on this, but the hits are there and still solid. The Way I Am - that’s my jam on this album

*2000. *Clever lyrics, catchy tunes, thoughtful tracks, and plenty of ridiculous over-the-top profanity in between. *This is a long one (1 hr, 17 mins), so tried to hurry through it, but ended up listening to most tracks. *Fun, irreverent, and classic Eminem. RATING - 8/10

Stan and Real Slim Shady are Classics. A lot of provocative lyrics. I remember listening to this on my neighbors porch as a kid.

Eminem’s willingness to put his different personas on display, especially the blatantly noxious ones, is the most interesting thing about this album. The juxtaposition of one song against another (as in the comparison another listener already made between “Stan” and “Kim”) really makes you think about Eminem’s intentions. He obviously wants you to realize he doesn’t mean everything he says, but he also meaningfully reflects on the consequences of what he says. There are no easy answers and many points, both for and against this album and its songs, are valid. For me personally, the density and sheer playfulness of the wordplay, the whiplash of the content/subject matter, and Eminem’s unfuckwithable flow are enough to score this high points and deem it a must-listen (#213). One point deducted for the too-high volume of misogyny (whether he means it or not) and a few completely unnecessary tracks.

This is a great album. It's also really hard to listen 25 years after its release.

I kind of hated it but can’t deny how massive this one was culturally. The way I am is a great track. And the production is iconic

this album is the antithesis of pride month. it's completely original, and i mainly enjoyed it so i'll give it brownie points.

Classic album. It's got all the greats. But the skits are dumb.

Very good album, some tracks that im glad i listened to but are pretty visceral and upsetting.

The skits/or interludes are pretty awful. But some class songs in there! Very nostalgic stuff!

Eminem gets a lot of shit for his lyrics, but at least he's been consistently self-aware of what he raps about and people's reactions.

Would be a 5 if the jokes could be sensible to a new listener in 2025

This is a fascinating snapshot of suddenly having to deal with being famous. I honestly didn't think there's a single song on this album that isn't about Eminem's reaction to culture's reaction to Eminem. The homophobia and misogyny are difficult 25 years later. They were notable even at the time. All that aside, every track is a banger as far as production and hooks are concerned.

Definitely not my choice of genre but the big hits are so familiar and take you right back. Remembering how ground-breaking this was when it first came out, it might seem old fashioned now but Eminem broke the stereotype and gave us all so many cracking rhymes. Thoroughly enjoyed revisiting this.

4/5 this album caused stan culture I wasn't even 16 yet when the album came out. VIVA/MTV were still a thing and they played The Real Slim Shady all the time of course. The album itself has a *very* different vibe, notably because that song was only written to be a single after the LP was finished. Imagine you expect something like that on album length and then the first track is Kill You. 💀 Well it was the earliest 2000s possible and we were middle-schoolers, as such the lyrics didn't cause more than probably a few raised eyebrows, 25 years later (and with the 20/20 of hindsight) it’s clear how much of it is played just for shock value. "Very much a product of its time" as they say. Good production, good flow, pretty raw performances. This is a certified hood classic.

HE SAID SKIBIDI IN 2000 if you don't bop to this you have no ears absolute classic

THE ALBUM 4/5 Em is one of my favourite rappers, lyrical god from Detroit, changed the literal way people thought about rap music and which artists could do it. Not his very best work, but close to it. Perfect reflection of the 2000s rap scene in terms of musical style. Listening to the whole album in one sitting can lead to a slim, shady feeling of being oversaturated. You'll have a hard time with this if you're a snowflake. There's some songs in here that are a little rough, but also some real gems. No 5/5 stars cuz The Eminem Show exists. THE SONGS - PSA: unfiltered af, I appreciate that. No rating. - Kill You: Flawless transition from the intro, typical Eminem guitar beat sounds, serial killer = cereal killer, this line especially got later acknowledgement in Logic's "Disgusting". 6/10 - Stan: went viral for years and for a good reason, the lyrics hit deep. I'm vibing to this anytime I listen to it. 10/10 - Who Knew: Em reflecting about his own music - and his fans? The beat is dope, the lyrics send a message. 6/10 - Steve Berman: stylistic cut, no rating - The Way I Am: One of the first Em songs I enjoyed listening to, even when I didn't really understand the lyrics. Lyrics about himself, as we'll see a couple other times in later albums. Church bell beats were modern back then. 7/10 - The Real Slim Shady: Will the real Slim Shady pls stand up? Makes my personal Top 3 of Eminem songs I listened to on the regular. Bonus points for mentioning Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit. Perfect reflection of the 2000s. 10/10 - Remember Me?: "... cuz I grab the mic and get dooown like syndrome", geez 😂 You couldn't publish these kind of lines today since everyone takes everything so seriously. Dope beat, very viby, very close to OG gangsta rap. 7/10 - I'm Back: Sounds like a family friendly beat, lyrics are more tame (only a bit). Chorus is a bit uninspired. 4/10 - Marshall Mathers: damn this is good. Critics called Em both homophobic and gay because of songs like this. The music itself is 8/10 - Ken Kaniff - Skit: awww suck it. No rating - Drug Ballad: yeah drugs are bad, kids. Message is there, my taste is not. 5/10 - Amityville: A song about Detroit, probably realistic. Beat is atmospheric, Em's aggressive, I like. 7/10 - Bitch Please II: Interscope Records allstars, dope af beat that stays in your head for hours, I have this on repeat in my focus playlist when I punish people in Tarkov. Turn this up, 10/10 - Kim: Coping with his then gf Kim, not really for me. 3/10 - Under The Influence: typical Eminem song, but really nothing special about this one. 5/10 - Criminal: This song hits. you know why? cuz I'm a CRIMINAL. Also somewhat relatable. 7/10 - The Kids: Drugs are bad Part II. Life lesson and horror movie in one song, veeery creative. Em sounds very much like 50 Cent in the chorus, thx Dre 😅. 8/10

Just good old Eminem, lyrics are insanely good. Beats are also on point. Songs dragged on but that's cause I don't fuck with rap music

Edgy for the time. Probably canceled in today’s culture. Incredible talent with heavy doses of immaturity. I think Marshall probably used the music as self therapy.

I enjoyed, highlights: Stan, The Real Slim Shady, Bitch Please II, Under the Influence. Some more good ones. Criminal is good.

used to kinda hate eminem but i find his early work is pretty good

Besides the elephant in the room that is Kim, this is still some damn good rap. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

I respect this album more than I enjoy it. "Stan" is a deserved classic, and I appreciate the theme of the album reflecting on fame, persona, and influence. It's very thoughtful in that way. But some of the over-the-top graphic violence, particularly targeting women, is very hard to listen to.

Tough to rate, there's so many bangers but there's also a few hard skips

Didn't enjoy it, but can't deny its importance in the genre and pop culture

“I guess there’s a little Slim Shady in all of us.” Mean and masterful. Defiant, willfully offensive and misogynistic, and ultimately a character study. Shock rap that is actually shocking. He’s still doing the “I don’t care what you think” schtick, but it doesn’t bother me here as much as it did on the Slim Shady LP. I would be lying if I said I didn’t rock with this. His performance is astonishing, the hooks are bulletproof, and the beats knock. And, as violent as it is, it’s also a vulnerable record. There’s a reason Em is still held up as one of the greatest to touch a mic even after the recent string of bad albums. Despite myself and the truly objectionable content, I dig this record. I also would probably agree with most people who hate it. I acknowledge that I’m being a massive hypocrite by rating this so high. “Stan” is perfect and gains relevancy by the day. I’ll also know every word to “The Real Slim Shady” until I’m in the ground.

-1 star for the content. Maybe that should be worth more to me? Oops.

4.0 / 5.0 You have to understand how groundbreaking this album was at the time. Who would've thought a white guy from the midwest in 2000 could be an angry edgelord?

I like everyone else my age had this album when it came out and loved it. I haven’t listened to most of these songs in 25 years. I now get the experience of listening to it as a middle aged parent and I’m mortified that my parents let me listen to this music.

Stan is a literary masterpiece!

It's hard, in your face hardcore rap. Eminem reaches all the extremes, some lyrics are downright prison-worthy, but there is a certain quality to it all that makes one keep on listening.

thoughts: i kinda forgot how great his flow is as a rapper, but it’s really obvious here. the self-referential nature — both positive and negative — really comes through. the “steve berman” interlude is hilarious. “marshall mathers” 100% dates this as early 2000s; woof, that doesn’t age well. but overall yeah, this is a really good, cohesive record songs: “stan”, “the way i am”, “remember me?” rating: 8.1/10

I don't think Eminem's talent can be denied. He is a genius lyricist, and I have a lot of respect for him as one of the best rappers out there. This album is definitely filled to the brim with rage, and there is a fair bit of homophobia and misogyny in his lyrics. That can't exactly be denied. However, this isn't exactly uncommon in rap music even today. This was recorded when he was still in active addiction and needed an outlet for his rage at the world and the people who had hurt him in his past. Kim is definitely the hardest track to listen to, but it is definitely one many of us can understand if you have ever been in a tumultuous relationship. It's a real look into what happens behind closed doors and, while difficult to face, is so raw. I don't want to glorify the bad parts about this album, but I think that there is a benefit to albums like this existing. It's real emotion. Real rage. Real struggle. Real art.

Great album.

vier bis fünf

As someone who has only heard Eminem's radio hits, listening to this was an eye-opening experience. It is undeniably artistic- even when it is vulgar or violent. I found it very interesting overall, though the middle stretch of songs didn't sit well with me personally. His storytelling is on another level. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely powerful.

The first time I listened to this album was when I was a 15 year old Freshman in high school. I haven't listened to this album since I was in high school. My high school self, a teenage male, would have given this a a five-star rating. With that being said, listening to this album as a fully grown adult provides me a completely different perspective. The album still contains the greatest song Eminem has ever had, and has some of bangers that missed the radio, but it's hard to ignore the bigotry that persists among the album(which I also notice on every 1990s, and 2000s Eminem album). There was a point when I jammed out to "Kim", but now I realize it's a disturbing song created for shock value, and if Eminem wasn't white, people would have called for him to be arrested for the song alone(argue with a wall, Eminem Stans). Every song has either a homophobic, or misogynistic slur explicitly for shock value. A lot has changed since the beginning of the millennium; we weren't as politically correct back then as we are these days. The rhythm, beats, samples, verses, raps, tracks, and nostalgia makes me want to give this album a five-star rating, but the bigotry has to come into play here. Favorite Track: "Stan".

He sure knows how to add rhythm to his rhymes. I hope he learnt to chill a little over the years.

One of the best rap/hiphop albums

I don't tend to get uncomfortable due to the subject matter of music much...lyrics have seldom been the "main event" of any song for me. So I was surprised by how much Eminem was really able to get under my skin with these songs [particularly on 'Stan' and 'Kim'] and actually make me feel shocked. It's frightening how vividly he's able to evoke the emotions backing up the horrible things he talks about; and he does it with a sardonic sense of humor that adds a grimly realistic personality on top of it all. On the more laid-back tracks, it's much easier to admire the technical backbone of his skills as a rapper, so I'm grateful it's not a horror show the whole time! Four stars here; not exactly an album I "love", per se, but I respect the craft SO much here.

Well this takes me back. The music holds up incredibly well, the content, uhhhhhhhhhhh, does not. But the hits are so good, and the talent/intelligence is just as evident now as it was back then. 4/5.

kind of angry. but its a classic

This album is one of the few albums that tries to be edgy and succeeds. Kim and Stan are incredibly disturbing songs, and the entire album is full of vicious commentary on the world. Plus, all the songs are bangers. Ken Kenith disgusted me on the first listen, though

Really enjoyed this album. Music was good but also had a clear vibe/message. Very consistent and solid

Sure, there's a lot of stuff here that hasn't aged well, but it doesn't mean Eminem isn't a talented lyricist.

Great rapper

This might be the most metal hip hop album, as far as that makes sense, and much of Eminems work is a worthwile and interesting experience even for me, someone who generally isn't into that genre at all. But yeah, all the misogyny and homophobia didn't just not age well, but was pretty off-putting from the start. Still, I gotta respect the legacy of this album.

Undoubtably Eminem's best worst. Its been so long since he put out a good album that I sometimes forget how great these first few records are. Character is locked in, lyrics disgusting and often funny, and Dre's production is classic. It's pretty juvenile, and Em's anger is spread out like a buck shot with not real aim or direction, which makes the anger feel silly or put on. Kinda cheesy at times, but always a fun listen nonetheless. *Heard before

You may not like the style, and you may not like to admit it, but this is, in fact, a historical album, and its tracks do pack a punch. Stan (feat. Dido) is hands down its most memorable track, and perhaps the one that best stood the test of time. But that opinion is polarizing. Like the album is.

Aquí destacan Stan a caballo de Dido y The Real Slim Shady .

where's the one about the second century warlord?

Eminem really stepped it up on this one compared to the slim shady lp. He still has a lot of shock rap verging on horrorcore, but there’s also some sincerity that he ventures more into on future albums.

I really appreciate Eminem’s mix of humor and extreme seriousness, it’s that contrast between the self-ironic and the deeply personal that makes the album compelling. It’s incredibly well produced, and Dr. Dre’s influence is clear throughout: the beats are sharp, heavy, and highly effective. There’s no doubt this is a classic in American hip-hop, and Eminem’s technical skill is undeniable. But even though I respect its quality and impact, it’s not an album I would include in my own vinyl collection. It sits somewhere between admiration and personal distance, and for that, it’s a 4/5.

This is truly a one of a kind album. Eminem is unforgivingly himself throughout the whole project and it leads to a very interesting look into the artists psyche. I take issue with the amount of “gay” talk. Not all of it is necessarily homophobic, but a lot if not all of it is. Also didn’t add anything in my opinion. I don’t really think Eminem is homophobic, but it does take me out of the album, which is unfortunate because the rest of it is really good. I hate skits as always. Good work, Marshall. 4/5

The return of Slim Shady! The controversial satirical album includes classics such as Stan, The Real Slim Shady, Kill You, etc.

Classic and still just as grotesque. Really pushed the line for "R" rated songs, i.e Kim, with beyond vulgar and chilling lyrics.

Pretty aggressive, liked when he was telling people off about their judgement of him 3.5

Unoppologetically Em with aggressive and vulgar lyrics that express his frustration and anger with the world and systems

Lyrics are superhuman, prrof that legends will beat AI everytime

The great songs are great, the art songs are a lot more confronting at 37 than they were at 17. Still, so influential, mostly good, very long songs?

Damn this slaps

Very good at what he does. Most clever rapper in the game.

Some of his lines just blow my mind.

El mejor álbum de Eminem. Quizá me gusta un poco más The Eminem Show...pero por ahí va. Ideal para empezar en el hip-hop.

Did Eminem and Dre just make a list of offensive words and themes then see how many of them they could use on one album? Worth it!

Middle school was awesome

“ He's rapping about big-screen TV's, blunts, 40's and bitches You're rapping about homosexuals and Vicodin.”

Pretty good, brought back a lot of funny memories

Entretenido.

Liked that. Made me laugh.

As good (and awful) as I remembered.

I know the hits - I wasn't in cave in 2000. But the album is start to finish REALLY good. I know understand why the greats call him the GOAT. Will have to listen to Tupac, Kendrick, and a couple more now, dammit. Not my usual fare.

Music-wise this goes hard, but wow these lyrics. It's definitely more purposeful and self-aware than some other shock factor albums on this list but it's still a lot. It's like a horror movie. It kinda makes you think why are we okay with horror movies but not horror music? It's essentially the same idea. It's not real, it's a story. Maybe with music it's just harder to separate the real person from the persona. This was interesting.

So…Eminem. I have very distinct memories of hearing The Real Slim Shady multiple times as a child. It was on a mixtape my parents made for that I would listen to on our annual vacation to Long Beach Island, a beach town on the east coast of New Jersey. Don’t worry, it was the censored version… actually that still might not have been appropriate for me. Oh well. Given my adverse reactions to rap and hip-hop, Eminem was always an exception to me. Of course, this isn’t saying much. Saying you like rap because you listen to Eminem has the same aura as saying you like metal because you listen to Metallica. But I’ll attempt to somewhat justify my reasonings. Let me get some of the negative stuff out of the way. Yes, this album relies on a certain f-word and I’m not talking about “fuck”. Eminem constantly throws the word around the album, and it never gets easier to swallow. I understand that Eminem doesn’t want you to read his lyrics literally, but at some point you pass a limit. I’m not going to debate whether or not Eminem is homophobic himself; that’s something for him to sort out. But it severely dates the album, which is kind of sad for something released in the year 2000. Also, the album loves to bang its themes over your head. So much of this album really is about Eminem reflecting over his fame and his attitude. It starts to get a little tiring hearing Marshall tell me that he didn’t expect to blow up like he did. So fucking humble… Lastly, some of this album relies on the tropes of other rap albums that I don’t care for: songs about Eminem’s dick and drugs and guns, with some skits thrown in. These cons kind of diminish the LP, since I thought Eminem was more of an outlier, a break from the conventional. But parts of the LP felt like the Chronic with some violence thrown in. (And if you want to know what I thought about the Chronic, refer to my summary page, at the bottom). With all of that being said however, there’s something here that makes this album… I guess dynamic? I weirdly find Marshall to be pretty funny during his more comedic songs. I think that’s why The Real Slim Shady struck a chord with me for so many years. Kill You has the same vibe too, which helps keep the seriousness of the violence down. But when Marshall gets serious, he leaves an impact. Stan is a very haunting song that shows the dangers of obsession. It’s a lesson that sadly nobody’s learnt, since the term “Stan” is now just straight up a loosely used term for liking something. It’s in the same vein as believing that “Take Me to Church” is pro-religion. And I never want to listen to Kim again. The way Marshall is practically screaming through the song, mixed with the fact he’s talking about his actual wife at the time, is disturbing. And it takes a lot for me to find something disturbing. Is the Marshall Mathers LP a dated-juvenile effort? Sure. I think I don’t really agree with Marshall’s idea of “just because I say it in the song doesn’t mean I do it in real life”. At some point, it just comes off as edgy. But there are legitimate moments on this album that struck me, which for a rap album is a hard task when it comes to me. That can’t be understated. My takeaway is that I can only take Eminem in certain doses. But when I get those doses, it usually hits the spot. Favorite track: The Real Slim Shady Other hits: Stan, Who Knew, Criminal, Kill You, The Way I Am, Kim

Why can’t shady just go back to this!!! All jokes aside a great album, great flows and Dre’s production is awesome. Only thing that holds this album back for me is that some bars are definitely products of the time and in a way stop it being as timeless as other rap albums

Alcuni classici e alcune canzoni totalmente distanti dal mio genere. Però comunque spacca.

Groovy - gut!

Prijemny na poslech i do pivoteky

It was good, remember meeeee

Not a big fan of Eminem but I'll say that this is one of his best albums. Favourite Songs: Stan, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, Criminal. Least Favourite Songs: Remember Me?, Amityville.

1001 ALBUMS YOU MUST HEAR BEFORE YOU DIE #5 Eminem is known by many to be the best rapper of all time, the goat if you will, and from this, known as his best, I understand. "The Marshall Mathers LP" is the 3rd album from Detroit's own Eminem, and it has aged great and terribly. The opening track "Kill You" shows that Em "does not give a fuck" about anything, it also shows that the production (handled by Dr. Dre) will be great throughout, it's the classic Em style of beats. The next track "Stan" is one of Em's biggest songs, he raps in the perspective of a huge fan writing to Em, the fan increasingly gets more aggressive as the song goes on because of Em not responding. Then, its climax is at the 3rd verse, as the fan drives drunk on a bridge and crashes with her pregnant girlfriend in the trunk, and on the 4th verse Em finally writes back saying nice things, explaining things, and giving advice, saying he didn't respond because he was busy, then he realized that the crash he saw on the news, was that fan. This song was so influential that "Stan" became a real word for fans like this. it's a track that tells its story perfectly. "The Way I Am" was another big song and Em raps to the piano used on the track, he raps about his frustration at other people, which makes sense, at the time, a lot of people did not like Em. Then there's "The Real Slim Shady" which is one of Em's biggest hits, peaking at number 4. And what some people know Em for. Dr. Dre produced a beat that Em flows on so perfectly, the hook is catchy, and it's a great example of Em's humor on this record, it's one of my favorite tracks of his On "Bitch Please II" Em brings over Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, and Nate Dogg on the same track. It uses another great Dre beat, and everyone is entertaining, especially Nate Dogg's hook. And "Kim" is one of Em's craziest tracks. It's so crazy in fact to the point we're many people can't even listen to it. It has this intense beat with piano and guitars. And Em just let's his mind speak. I think the best way to explain it is to just listen to it. You'll understand. Overall, I understand the hype, I might prefer "The Eminem Show" at times, but they are pretty close in quality in my opinion. Even though this Em was offensive as hell, and it overall just aged like milk at some points. It's still a great record. Overall Score: 90 / 100 Favorite Tracks: Kill You, Stan, Who Knew, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, Drug Ballad, Bitch Please II, Kim.

prime Eminem, easily his best work. Man went from a nobody to the forefront of media and this album heavily revolves around his tangled identity

Very creative. Probably won’t listen to again due to misogynistic and anti-lgbtq lyrics.

I thought was great. I did have 5 stars but the repeated faggot references knocked a star off, different times back then in 2000.

I'd Mather you take me to TJ Maxx

A wild ride of nostalgia

It’s still pretty great, mostly holds up like a fine wine

Big rap fan and the story telling and image painting here is really good. I do find most jokes funny , although I don’t agree with their sentiments , the skits maybe go on a little too longer and there’s a couple of skips but it remains one of the better rap albums

Love him or hate him, everyone has strong opinions about Eminem. He was definitely homophobic at this point in his career, but it's masked a bit by Slim Shady being so over the top offensive to everyone and everything. From Stan to The Real Slim Shady and more, this album has some of Eminems most iconic songs, mixed in with some pretty uncomfortable skits. I like that some of the other artists featured change the overall feel/style of the album a bit by bringing old school or gangster rap into a few songs.

Crazy for me to think that it sold as many copies as it did. Not an easy listening experience for most people. But this is probably his best album. The issue for me is the same that I have with his other albums. You have plenty of great tracks like Real Slim Shady, Stan, Bitch Please, etc; and then a whole lot of filler and juvenile sketches. Last time I listened to this album as a whole was when I was around 14. After listening to it again today I doubt that I'll revisit it. Still an important cultural artifact which I think deserves some engagement and deep diving. There's a lot to be unpacked and analyzed.

I love some Eminem songs but this was pretty ugly. Interesting though!

"Bitch Please II" incroyable. J'aime bien "Remember me?" aussi.

“public service announcement” is peak humor. “kill you” has an insane beat and flow! also “stan” somehow manages to balance rap and pop perfectly. like what do you mean there’s an actual melody?? “slim shady” is always goated. “marshall mathers” had a good chorus and a great guitar solo. but then it led into the most UNCOMFORTABLE listening experience of my life bro. iykyk. “kim” has an INSANE instrumental as well as an INSANE set of lyrics. really disturbing. a lot of these songs did cover other uncomfortable topics but i feel they were more of a social commentary. this one was also on apple music’s top 100 albums list — and i agree!! would probably rate 5/5, but it gets a point taken off for how disgusting some of the lyrics were and how well some really violent stories were painted. 4/5.

Brutal listen. Had to take a break halfway through. Wanted this album when I was 10, glad I didn't purchase it. Musically and lyrically impressive, but I never want to go through that again.

Damn! Almost 25 year anniversary. I can see why people were shocked back then. ' Stan' is pretty tame compared to a lot of the CD.

Eminem’s best by far.

O álbum mistura contém subgêneros do Rap como Horrorcore e Comedy Rap. Letras afiadas e batidas agressivas.

BITCH IMMA KILL YOU! I heard a good part of this album in middle school. I am an adult now, so I can hear this album without being secretive. I think beyond the fact that Eminem is shocking with what he says, some of these songs have depth to them. Stan is one of the most captivating rap songs of all time. For that storytelling to come from someone like early Eminem was proof that he was more than a threatening misogynist asshole. There's a good reason why this album was at the forefront of the culture in the year 2000. I like the commentary angle Eminem takes on most of these songs. Kim is wild however. (7/10, 4/5 on this scale)

Ive spoken to others and it appears it's a hot take, but Slim Shady LP > Marshall Mathers LP. These deep cuts aren't as good but the hits are huge hits and probably exceed Slim Shady, but album to album, it just isn't as good.

Stripping out the skits and a few of tracks, it is a great album... Giving it the benefit of the doubt because of nostalgia but a 4 is generous

Bom disco.

Really strong album, the beats and hits are the first thing that stand out. Some of the guitars and bass on applicable songs are actually stand outs, it’s really solid. I’d give it a 5 since it stands out in such a way, really shows that Eminem is one of the best rappers out there

One of his best

Really good

Cringe and shite. More please.

Detroit guys get an extra star. Deal with it.

Probably Eminem’s magnum opus. If I was only give one album from all of his collection that I could take with me to deserted island it would probably be “The Eminem Show”. Joking aside, this is album is great. My only real complaint about the album is that in the later half it gets alittle dated because it starts showing signs of homophobia. Despite that being rampant in the rap scene up to this point, it still doesn’t really age well. It does however kind of become funny when you realize how often he’s telling the listener through the album to suck his dick when a good majority of his fans are men. Make of that what you will, but seriously this is probably Eminem’s best or second best album um. Totally worth your time.

Favorite Track: Bitch Please II

4.5? Yeh!

Did not like the skits. Tracks got very aggressive in the second half.

8/10…hip hop

An album that defined the sound of the 2000's, crude and beautifull.

I vowed not to read what others would have said about this album, so here are my views. With some songs, I already knew them from my teenage years - "Stan", "The Way I Am", and "The Real Slim Shady". I connect memories especially to the prior song, because one of my ex-boyfriends viewed himself as "Stan", so I had a tough time listening to this song in particular (And another one I will talk about further down.), but I did it anyways, and I do not wish ill on my ex. Something that stood out to me was that with MANY of the songs, there is not a lot of effects used, not a lot of tracks used for each song, etc., so it comes across as very "organic", but not in a negative way. It feels like also, with the meanings behind the songs, they translate very well into how the songs are made (e. g. "Drug Ballad" immediately had me notice the speed, velocity, and the construct of the song getting denser throughout time.) With "Remember Me?" I thought I really liked the gloomy atmosphere created throughout the track, with the deep, moving bass riffs, combined with these really high notes (some kind of synthesizer, most likely). While I was wondering whether the first few notes of the "Marshall Mathers" song were actually sampled from the Red Hot Chili Peppers (?), I noticed it went a bit different than the prior. Either way, this song's so organic as well. I really liked "I'm Back"; it has a very free feel to it. I feel like the synth effect here always reminds me of water drops falling into a puddle of water, but in a musical way (If anybody understands...?). While the bass line, which to me stood out for the intervals that were played, could have been doubled by the vocals, they decided against it, I think. It feels very experimental... With "Kim" especially, however, it does remind me of some really traumatising things I experienced. Physical abuse, attempted murder, and domestic violence are not really a time I wanted to be thrown back into, and I am sorry. What I think it still well-done in this song is: It really frightens me, and having emotions like these stirr up should be a good thing. It is just hard. While I do think that, also from a recent perspective, there are things that Eminem has been doing/saying in his songs back then that he was confronted with time and time again, and that he also opened up about, I do think especially people who've experienced abuse of any kind, they should proceed with caution. If I would have to read this album on a scale from 0 to 10 (I could also do with a scale going to eleven, lol), I would still give it a 7 out of 10.

Overall strong album, with a few classics. Some of the collabs were a little weaker, and it isn't quite up to his best album The Eminem Show.

Oof. Violently homophobic and sexist, but unfortunately kind of rules. Drug Ballad is a forever jam for me. and Bitch Please II. It's a four.

Unbelievably edgy but what else do you expect, the actual lyricism is mostly really good and imaginative. Any bad song on here gets cancelled out by Stan/RSS

I've heard it a lot. Since I was a kid. Solid.

I remember its ubiquity in 2000, never listened to it all the way through after my sister bought the CD and we listened to it in her room. I was really struck by the lyrics this go round; the beats don’t really stick to me unfortunately. Drug Ballad had to be my top track, favorite beat and the frankness of Em’s lyrics hit for me having seen too many friends go through addictions. And that’s what you get with a great Eminem track; incendiary commentary on American working class alienation couched in a catchy circus beat to penetrate mass consciousness.

It's got some absolute bangers but also some weird shit that I'm not into.

First I gotta say that the production is absolutely classic. No bad beats. Second, this is one of those albums that grow on me with time. Theres still some songs I dont care for much, but it has a lot of great material. Stan, The Real Slim Shady and Bitch Please II are all some of my absolute favorite.

Great first album, have listened to this back to front a million times. Classic early rap era Nathan. Can't wait to relisten. 1. Public Service announcement- Album starts with a skit, has been a while since I listened to an album with a skit. It was comforting haha. 2. Kill you- The beat is unreal, classic early 2000's. Definitely one of the sounds that set my brain chemistry for years to come. Song went about 2 minutes too long. Could just be my 2020s brain rot but we get it, you kill people (you don't lol) 3. Stan- An absolute classic, no notes just a banger. Its probably been said a million times but seriously prophetic. Love it. 4.Paul - Skit -not much 5. Who Knew- Honestly what a clap back, this song takes both himself off the pedestal and puts society under a light. Its pretty interesting listening to this album as an adult instead of a 14 year old kid. Its like watching the simpsons as an adult. Listening to eminem with a fully (questionable) developed frontal lobe is like putting 3D glasses on in a movie. 6. Steve Berman - Not much 7. The way I am - This song makes me think the difference between old Em and new em isnt the drugs its the anger the emotion and the struggle. The hook is unreal which is another thing I find the modern Em misses. Honestly this album is so good. 8. The real slim shady -Banger, certified dance floor classic, the words are rubbish and its probably not great for me to bobbing my head along to the terrible things but the turn the mirror on yourself message is still here. Sometimes though you just need to forget all the depth and bob your head along to an all time hook. 9. Remember me - Great beat, songs is boring. Consistent theme in Eminem albums is the (Non-Proof) features being pretty disappointing. I think part of that is the features being worse rappers but also not able to stay on topic like he does. 10. Im back - Rhymes are good, the lack of variation on topics is starting to drag. Beats ok. Not my favourite. 11. Marshall Mathers - Once again the beat is great, the rhymes are great and I can see why I loved this shit when I was a teenager it just carries on a bit. A criticisim I often see of new albums is of extended track lists but this is 18 deep and about 6 of these are the same (Great) song. Pretty bitter and the homophobia and misogyny is starting to weigh it down. 12. Ken Kaniff - Gross 13. Drug Ballad - Finally a different topic (Kind of) and it bangs. 14. Amityville - Boring, no offense to Bizarre but he sucks 15. Bitch Please 2- Classic, Classic, Classic. More of a Chronic era Dre song then an Eminem song. Just slaps. 16. Kim- The song is meant to make you feel uncomfortable and does. I can feel myself wanting to skip it the entire time. Some of the other reviews commented on how intense it must have been making it and I can't even imagine. I do think there has to be some critique of the actual song at some point though, its not actually enthralling or capturing. Its kind of like stepping on lego not the feeling you get pressing on a bruise. 17Under the influence - Ready for the album to end at this point, we get it we can suck your dick. The writing is unreal the beats are still great its just the same shit over and over again. If this was song 7 instead of 17 I would be raving about it. 18 Criminal - I knew this was coming at the end of the album. All timer, absolutely floats on this beat. Glad the album finishes on this makes sure it ends on a 4/5. FT; The album has obvious issues. Its too long, its beats the life out of a few dead horses for shock value and its features are very hit and miss. It is an all time great rap album though. The beats are amazing (Thanks Dre), he is still flowing rather than just trying to get as many cool rhymes in as he can and the commentary (When you sift through the bullshit) is poignant and has depth. I really like this album and Im glad I still think its a classic after all these years.

Starts amazingly strong. Songs and skits banger after banger after banger. The second half’s drags a tiny bit and the homophobia and misogyny do not age well. Ending with criminal is a high note. Can’t give 5 because of the aging poorly. Would give 4.5 so have to go with 4. Just short of a masterpiece. First half is like 5.5 stars

#556. Some of it may not have aged well, but Eminem was so iconic at the time it's easy to overlook it. The songs themselves are pretty fucking good. 4/5: great.

Peak Album with a very sad story in it

He's creative with words, his flow is one of the best, the beats are some of Dr Dre's best. If only he had something interesting to say. But no. He likes to brag how he's an arrogant sexist homophobic drugs addict and that it's alright because he's from a dysfunctional family. Really? What a waste of talent.

HipHop rap, 00s. Classic rap album. Lyrical

It was interesting to listen to this album again after close to 25 years. Certainly I have heard the singles in the interim but not the entire album. For one I am glad that “skits” seem to be a thing of the past. Secondly it’s interesting to remember the controversy around some of the songs and think how those would be different now. Some things have become more permissible and others much less. I wonder if someone hearing this for the first time could be more upset by the challenging lyrics or is it more recognized as shock for shocks sake after many more similar artists, interviews, discord about it. The album itself still sounds strong, the rhymes clever and the delivery novel. It should be heard at least once.

that was pretty edgy

Public service announcement had me dying of laughter. Say what you want about this album, it has a lot of character. Super strong late 90s/early 2000s vibes. Eventually it got a bit repetitive for me

For me Eminem is unique in his genre. I like the way he plays with the words and raps about heavy themes. Some songs are a bit too dark. The collabs with some other rappers weren’t necessary, but overall a great album. It’s hard to choose some favourites because it feels like an album where the songs are connected and even tough some songs are great on its own, they are part of the whole album story.

I became a rap fan towards the end of middle school (circa early 2010's.) As a Midwestern privileged white kid, you would think Eminem and I would be a match made in heaven- which was the case for many of my peers. Truthfully, I really never gave Eminem a shot. Heard him on the radio, but avoided him in pretty much every other respect. To me, he was the fox wearing, monster drinking, type of rapper, and my preppy adjacent sensibilities couldn't jive with it. However, listening to this- I have a much greater appreciation for Eminem. Can't say I love the super aggression, and the slurs/horror core rap is sometimes pretty intense. Topically this is pretty foreign, but I suppose I could say that for a majority of albums I do enjoy in the rap genre. Where this project shines is in the melodies, rap flows, and the instrumentals. The hooks are catchy, the content is original as hell, and Eminem is not afraid to be himself and piss of the masses. Wouldn't say I am a fan of Eminem, but I can say that I definitely have missed out not listening to this album prior to today.

A true gem by my standards as someone who doesn't listen to or gravitate to this genre. The depth of this album is just okay, but the all the great tracks hold this up. Bonus points for Eminem being one of the few rappers of which I can clearly understand the lyrics.

This is a classic album, both in content and in ways some of the content has not aged well. Balancing my memories of listening to this in my CD player on the bus to school against the high level of homophobic language used is an exercise in containing multitudes. That aside, it's got a few too many tracks, and I'm glad we've moved away from having skits. Let the music do the talking!

That this album was so controversial so as to go in front of congress is quaint in this day and age. Skits are always stupid af. Kim made me incredibly physically uncomfortable. Some good songs, 4* Highlights: stan (probably the first fucked up song I heard as a tween in the early 00s), the way that i am, real slim shady

Not bad.. for Hip Hop

FAVO: Kill you, Stan, Who knew, The Way I Am, The real slim shady, Im back, Drug Ballad, Bitch please 2, Criminal

Enjoyed this album, a few big tunes on there, and those I didn't know were alright as well.

Haven’t listened in a while. So good

This was an experience. The lyrics are what they are, and it gets beyond uncomfortable at points. But sonically, this thing is front to back bops, which is the primary reason for this rating.

This album really was the emergence of Eminem and Slim Shady as we knew him. The Real Slim Shady was an anthem that I think had the greatest impact when he and a mafia full of bleach-blonde white dudes, and muscle shirts walked in to the VMAs and shot to the world. But behind the shock value, there are also some deeper songs such as the Way I Am, and the tragic storytelling of Stan. It’s also hard to dislike the song ****** Please II with Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, and Xzibit. Overall, this album is definitely a classic, especially in the Rap world.

What a mixed bag. Part infantile shock rap, part introspective and part joke rap. The infantile shock rap feels very dated. I guess around 2000 it could be edgy to hear this stuff on the radio/CD but now when one can just read whatever on the internet the titillation of hearing about someone wanting to have sex with their parents just sounds lame. It’s just the internet. The introspective rap really shines, “The way I am” is a great and poignant song, so is “Stan”. Stan goes to a quite dark place and shines a dark light on what fandom can do. While “Stan” is an uncomfortable and dark listen, “Kim” just crosses the line. Maybe it is that it names Eminem’s ex wife specifically but I mean come on. An explicit murder fantasy about your ex is just unsettling and shocking. I think it’s the most uncomfortable I’ve been listening to a song since “Polly” by Nirvana. Lastly the jokes are hit and miss. The beats are really great and Eminem’s raps are incredible. One of my favourite lines is from “The real slim Shady”: “Will Smith don't gotta cuss in his raps to sell records. Well, I do, so fuck him and fuck you too”. It’s just a great and childish line. The highs are really high on this album but the lows are pretty damn low. Also the second half just falls off a cliff, it’s an incredibly front loaded album. The guest raps are also pretty bad and really just showcases how much better Eminem is. While an argument can be made that this is both homophobic and sexist, I always feel like the shock-value is the most important and I’m prepared to give this a pass. Going to settle for a 4 star on this. It could’ve been a 5 but without the hits it could also been a 1.

Lemivem? Eller var det Femifem? Oavsett vad så är det ganska bra.

Belangrijk hiphop album. Wijs album met zijn beste nummers dus: The Real Slim Shady, Stan, Kill You, Criminal ... 4.2

this is a classic, no doubt about it. even if you feel a bit oversaturated in terms of eminem's sound (i know i am) and usually prefer different kinds of hiphop this is just undeniable. 8/10

there can't be too many 4* albums where the main content is about beating or murdering your wife

Pretty impressive for a hip hop album made by a second century warlord

Aside from the obvious things that didn't age too well, this is a fucking crazy good album. A bit long - probably could've shaved a few tracks (especially Under the Influence and the Ken Kaniff skit, and most would probably say Kim lol) and it would've been even more impactful imo, or at least to me. The way it transitions from Kill You to Stan to Who Knew is absolutely fucking BONKERS and blew me away, holding my interest for the first half entirely. Second half still overall killer, little filler. No wonder everyone ate this shit up back in the day, and I'm still eatin' good tonight.

I am not beating the Eminem fan allegations with this one.

7/10 It’s really good, and I think we’re past the point where annoying white people who don’t listen to Hip Hop keep claiming that this is the greatest Rap album of all time, it’s messy but I respect it a lot. Vulgar Horrorcore imagery, foul humor, genuine introspection, and pure unfiltered intrusive thoughts, that’s what you’re gonna get on this album. Being offended is exactly what Em wants, American audiences have been exposed to the oversaturation of violence, sex, celebrity coverage, conservatism, and media coverage. Now that there’s a pretty white face speaking what the counter culture was thinking, you have to hear whining and bitching from the media and Eminem in 2000. There’s a possibility we might roll this album but I’ll go ahead and say it anyways, I always thought the Slim Shady LP was the better sister album. What made Eminem, particularly “Slim Shady” so successful in both the mainstream and the Hip Hop community is best described by this Dave Chapelle clip FD Signifier (shoutout) used in his “Eminem and the White Rapper Problem” essay. https://youtu.be/XYzXoIF1JjE?si=ngDLttczUQbNUMpO I think the SSLP allows Eminem to be a lot more fun, absurd, grotesque, and ridiculous with his persona in a way that felt a bit less on the nose with what it was obviously doing, I think the Marshal Mathers LP does a bit too much to over explain what the bit is, since he had less attention on him and was a genuine Rap Anti-Hero during this time. Both also have some pretty great production featuring Dre and Em’s best beats. MMLP deserves its praise bit its flaws are blatantly obvious in retrospect. A lot of the humor is very dated, relies too much on gross out jokes and shock value for the sake of sounding mean, some songs where he’s talking down to you, couple of dogshit fearures, and truthfully some embarrassing moments where he shows too much of his intrusive thoughts and revenge fantasies, as much as we can respect how vulnerable and honest they are as an outlet for him. Eminem eventually followed up these sister albums with two albums of varying quality, MMLP2 which is a solid album in concept but ultimately fails because of his fixation on technicality and abuse of high IQ puns/dad jokes, sounding like a constipated robot now, and The Death of Slim Shady, which has the same problems but this time about cancel culture and how you couldn’t make a Slim Shady album today because everyone is too sensitive or whatever. But that kinda doesn’t mean anything now in an era where one of the biggest rappers on the planet is an attention whore down on his knees for Hitler, I promise you, no one cares that you said the R slur anymore Slim, you’re like 50 now, Nas is dropping better shit than you now, you have no excuse. It goes to show how far down Eminem has fallen today when he continues to live in the shadow of these two albums in the larger canon of Hip Hop while his white mediocrity continues to keep him afloat in the mainstream. Thank God we have Danny Brown to actually pick up the ball Em fumbled with XXX. Anyways, favorite track would probably be uhhh Ken Kaniff

7/10 lot of good stuff here, some bad stuff here. 2-07-2025

Kind of insane. Like very good musically and awesome production but super angry music and I don’t know if I like how it makes me feel. Probably will listen to some of these songs again.

Motherfucking rap!

This man is very, very rude about many people.

Reminds me of High school, I wasn't a massive hip hop fan back then, as I've grown up I've matured to enjoying bits, this album has some great beats and some very witty lyrics. Thoroughly enjoyed the majority!

Among all the other great tracks on this album, Stan stands out as the pinnacle of Eminem's career, and is simply one of the greatest rap songs ever written. The Real Slim Shady is another all-timer. However this album had more low points than its predecessor. The lyrics are equally as deranged as the Slim Shady LP, but they feel more malicious and even darker, which makes for an occasionally uncomfortable listen. Favorites: Stan, The Real Slim Shady, Bitch Please II Least Favorites: Remember Me?, Ken Kaniff Skit, Kim

Some songs aged very badly. Some classics

Some classic Eminem hits on this album. Most unfamiliar songs were really fun and different. "Skits" were hit and miss.

Didn't age well in some aspects but it's iconic.

Legendary. But has aged pretty bad. However this was a genre and social defining moment and deserves a 5 star off that alone

This was a great old school hip hop albun

Aside from a couple hits, Eminem is not someone I enjoy listening to. But I'm reviewing this in the context of an artist who reflected our culture in a way that had never been done and consequently changed our culture so profoundly. We are so careful to be politically correct that we take certain topics and ignore them entirely. This album is like the diary of an 18 year old American boy, completely unfiltered, but also real and relatable for so many. It forces us to confront those topics - the most ugly, terrible parts of our humanity. They are real, and by discussing them, Eminem gave voice to so many other white American teenage boys. It might be ugly for the rest of us, but I respect that we are forced to confront them and acknowledge that their existence.

Iconic. I loved the classics: Drips, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, and Under the Influence. I didn't vibe with a lot of the other songs, but some of them had some good beats. I also appreciated the flow from listening to this album consecutively and how the skits flowed into the following songs thematically. A positive 3.5/5 stars.

My second favorite Eminem album.

Classic Eminem album.

Great album that I have heard many times. I think that it's great with some excellent beats and lyrics delivered flawlessly. Drug Ballad was always a favorite back in the day even though it obviously got no radio play. Good stuff with some emotional content as well. I'm sure that I will listen to this many more times.

This album is over the top. It's violent, misogynistic, and homophobic and at the same time it's pretty self aware. Stan and Who Knew dives into that a bit. He says he's just messing around with his Slim Shady character and people are taking his lyrics and acting on them. The jokes are intense but he's calling out that they're jokes. I don't know if the jokes are okay but he said he makes "fight music for high school kids" which is kind of what this is. I was so into this album in high school. It's full of high school toilet humor. It seems like maybe he's struggling with his rise to fame in this album. He addresses how he doesn't love getting stopped in the streets and how he didn't realize people would take his lyrics so literally. It's hard to deny how talented he is and there are so many songs on this album that are classics in my opinion. In summary, this album is quite offensive and I've docked points off other albums in this list due to being offensive. He does call out pretty clearly to me that he's making jokes and that he doesn't want people taking them seriously but I still don't think that makes the offensive jokes okay but honestly I'm just not really sure.

Wow. I don't even really know how to rate this album. Has there ever been an album more controversial than this one? Its rap, its horror, its hardcore, its punk. I don't know if there is any other record that has this much attitude with it. On one hand, I could rate it entirely on the unsavory material and give it a 1/5 or I could rate it on its boldness, self reflection and satire and give it a 5/5. The shock factor alone leaves you trembling, but the cleverness and wordsmithing is next level. You can really see how Kendrick was inspired by this stuff. In some ways it reminds me of the comedy of George Carlin, where its so damn smart that you love it but it's also damn dark and shocking that you don't really know how to palette it. I'm not sure when I'll re-listen to this. It was somewhat nostalgic because I remember when this came out and how controversial it was. MTV was kind of at the height of its power and celebrity culture was at the peak of its toxicity. So it's kind of wild that he pulled off this album and flamed throwed everyone with it. But damn it's a hard one to get through.

Awesome!

Listen. The guys said he doesn’t make black music, he doesn’t make white music. He makes fight music.

Great hip hop album.

Better than the last Eminem album and further cements him as the Rap God. It's also really funny how a lot of people are complaining that this album is too inappropriate despite that being the point (Although the homophobia is pretty bad and didn't age well). I'm not giving 5 stars because the second half isn't as good as the first but still a solid album. Also "The Real Slim Shady" is a banger!

Nostalgia.

Apparently much of the lyrical content and attitudes are 'unacceptable' these days (according to my millennial son), but I find him to be the best rapper I've heard - which admittedly isn't saying much. Given that the second word spoken on the appalling Kendrick Lamarr album was "nigger", I don't see what's so unacceptable about Eminem. It gets 4 stars, which is easily the highest possible rating for a rap/hiphop album.

hard to argue with the impact it had.

Different, interesting

I'm rating this based on the amount of times I listened to it over the last 25 years. I'm not sure how this listen would have been, but it was not conducive to the environment I was in over the weekend to give a run-through. I hope I can update this when I have a chance this week to listen.

stan is banger

Very 15 year old me, mostly still holds up

What can you say about this? Musically I am not a fan of hip hop, but this is not bad. But, it is weird and obviously the guy has some issues. No matter what they say "oh, you didn't get it, he meant this or that" some songs are weird. I would have given this a five, but I will drop it to four.

He seems a little angry.

Lyrics are as childish and, in places, repulsive as I remember. But they are undeniably catchy, and so over the top that they cross over into being enjoyable again.

Not an Eminem guy, but this made me like him a bit more. Witty, edgy, juvenile, uncomfortable, and dense. A must listen. Kim is top 5 most uncomfortable things I’ve listened to. Standouts: Kill You, Stan, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers, Drug Balled, Bitch Please II, Kim, and Criminal.

Very entertaining. Often hilarious. Front loaded with massive hits. The hits are poppier than I remembered. Some of the cultural references have dated and the violence is off the scale but this is a very well written and produced album. Eminem's personality carries it.

Loved this album. Feel like it hadn’t aged well but still love some of the songs

One of his better ones.

It's an outstanding album that seems to get better with time. The lyrics were prescient about the hopelessness of the world to come where a handful of people call all the shots for average people.

Over four years ago, “The Slim Shady LP” was our first album from the generator. I scored it a 3, but didn’t write anything. I have written something for every album since then, but going back now to write my review for “The Marshall Mathers LP” as my second-to-last review, I don’t know quite why I rated Slim Shady the way I did. I mean, I have some idea. I listened to a lot of Eminem early in his career, and I knew both of these albums well. But what do I think of them 25 years later? It’s complicated. Such unfiltered rage, with a mask of humor, shocked America when Eminem burst onto the scene in 1999 and 2000. But it didn’t come out of nowhere. In fact, it was right at the peak of shock culture, at the end of a decade filled with gangsta rap, Girls Gone Wild, and everything extreme. Provocative for the sake of being provocative, constantly pushing the envelope, seeing what you can get away with, seeing who you can piss off. How much did I recognize all of that at 19 years old? Did I have reservations about the content while shamelessly rapping along? I certainly do today. But I also can’t deny Eminem’s talent - his incomparable flow, his witty if disturbing lyrics, and even his hand in production and guiding the sound that make it stand out so much from other Dr. Dre proteges. We’ve listened to lots of other music on the list that openly admitted or plotted violence and crime, both in a confessional way and in a fictional storytelling way. Something makes the way Eminem does it feels different though? Slim Shady is of course a strange amalgamation of fictional character and semi-autobiographical, or perhaps just a part of Mathers’ subconscious, part of his psyche, a bit of himself he tries to repress. But with Slim and elsewhere Eminem is more visceral than his peers - with everything. And then there’s the misogyny. (Again, we’ve heard that elsewhere.) And the homophobia and transphobia. Is it all just Slim Shady? But isn’t Slim Shady still Marshall Mathers? There’s actually a lot of nuance to what Eminem does in his lyrics and with his use of the Shady persona. He’s walking the line of satire, he’s being transgressive and provocative to get reactions and sell records, he’s blurring the lines between fantasy and reality, between id and ego, between the darkness within us and the face we put out to the world around us. It makes for such an intense listening experience.

Super conflicted about Eminem. Do I think he is the most talented rapper on this list? Yes. Do I think his lyrics are often abhorrent? Also Yes. What he saying is so objectionable and yet the way he says it is so objectionable. I have been pondering why this is true for 2 decades now and I don't think I will ever figure it out.

There's no disputing that this fella can rap!

My best: Kill you, the way i am(Australian), who knew, the real slim shady

Legendary album that launched a legend

well, wanted more from that album. majority of songs are hits, another are quite boring for me. slim shady lp is better for me. 20/27

This is the best Eminem but is too horribly intense to get a 5. Lots of tracks on here are difficult to listen to

7.8/10

Didn't expect this, almost avoided the album, but it was a high 4. This is a cultural time capsule of the early 2000s through the lens of the most skilled participant. The hits exploded and his ability to rap in the hyper-pop culture space made him an icon. There is some reprehensible content, but it is this guy grappling for every midwest teenage male with the new world of MTV and constant entertainment.

Despite the outdated slurs and references and duds in the tracklist - this thing slaps. Shocking. Vile. And when it hits, it hits.

banger, should pick this up on vinyl

There's a lot of anger in this album, and it hits hard. Stan and Real Slim Shady are masterpieces. But the in-between segments and Eminem's crass, childish humor gets a bit much at times. Still, it's a legendary album for the rap scene.

Controversial, loving it or hating it hinges on how you interpret it. Either you believe shady is a character that asks the audience why they desire music with such crass topics and thus this album is clever commentary on the industry and society. Or you believe this is a cheap excuse to be vulgar and juvenile. I tend to fall on the former, but understand people ruling the latter.

Eminem's flow is great. Really interesting rhythmic stuff going on against static (albeit pretty cool) beats. Not one that I'll go back to often, but it's really good. 4 stars.

Album that has some classic songs on it. I reserve five stars for very few albums so a four star rating is really good.

Good overall with some skipables

Kim :[]

Hoe dan ook, Stan, The Way I Am, Kill You, Real Slim Shady.. classics

Hard to listen to start to finish, with all of the vulgar and offensive lyrics but I still love Eminem. While harsh and angry, the way he strings rhymes together is always impressive.

For me, the thing with Eminem has always been the struggle to reconcile the humanity in tracks like “Stan” with the inhumanity in tracks like “Kill You” and the homophobia, etc. in many of the other tracks. Although he says on tracks like “Criminal” that he doesn’t mean everything he says, there is the Howard Campbell, Jr. (look it up) element of being “who we pretend to be.” It’s the same with a lot of rap from that era. There’s no denying his talent as an artist, and he definitely puts all of his issues out there!

What I got from The Marshall Mathers LP is that Eminem had a 'gay' experience — a gay man giving him oral pleasure — and realized men might be better at it than women, which clearly didn’t sit well with him. Standout track: the Dido collab.

What to even do with this album. Moments are great, parts are ugly, there’s a few throw away tracks but it’s also bracing.

It was fine. Something I might play in the kitchen while cooking to zone out to. Otherwise no real pull to listen to again.

i remember when this came out (get off my lawn) and people were freaking out about it. i really didn't care, didn't listen to em, figured people were just freaking out because it was new and scary. since then, of course, we've moved on, for the most part, to freaking out about other, more exciting things, and people being up in arms about eminem seems kinda silly. but i guess i can see what they were upset about - i mean, he's going right after some pretty big names here, and isn't at all shy about it. anyway, this was cool. i still don't really know his stuff that well, but i did like this.

So obscene but so good lol. Could NOT be made today

Great album. I'm not a rap fan, but this record is easy to listen to for a non-fan.

Solid all the way through with a couple skips. Flow is samey throughout but it's a great flow so it doesn't matter too much. Lyrics are genius and hilarious at time, I read along front to back and wasn't bored for a second. Favorite Song: The Way I Am

This is a difficult one. As a cultural touchstone, it's epic. It's Eminem's magnum opus. No one can rhyme like Em, no one can tell a story like Em. It's actually difficult to listen to this while doing something else, it's almost like reading a book. You're doing yourself a disservice if you're not listening to the words. On the other hand, It's a tough listen in places. The violent and constant homophobia is gross. The violent and constant misogyny is exhausting. I'm not pearl clutching here, I know they're "jokes" or whatever, and I'm not offended, as it were, but it's just not appealing. I guess that's what happens when you push the line to get a reaction - eventually the line moves and what are you left with? An album that was once shocking but now, as society and culture have progressed, can come across as tired and cringe. If I rank it according to its popularity at the time of release, it's an easy 5 stars. If I rank it based on how I feel about it now, I don't think its repeat listenability is at the level you'd expect from a 5 star. Honestly, whether I rank it 4 or 5 stars, it'll be both very fair and extremely unfair.

never listened in full before, super emotional and great tracks all around. 7/10

I feel like I have to give this a four because he's one of the most skilled lyricists of this generation. But the production we were getting in the 2000s just feels so generic, with few exceptions.

This album surprised me, and I see how Em became the sensation he is. While there are some cringe moments based in what was "edgy" at the time (especially in the skits), there are also classic rap songs that have stood the test of time. The Real Slim Shady and Stan are still referenced all the time. Best Songs: Kill You, Stan, The Real Slim Shady, Drug Ballad, Bitch Please II Worst Songs: Remember Me?, Ken Kaniff (Skit), Kim,

Stan hits hard, even 24 years later (!). 4 stars. I'd listen again, but still guilty pleasure for being a piece of poo.

Why is this man yelling at me for an hour?? But the bars were there, the lyrics are cringe in hindsight and i remembered why this is my favorite version of Eminem. He’s not spending an hour trying to prove that he can rap which has grown tiresome. Knocking off a star because that “Kim” record was uncomfortable. I know that should speak to the level artistry to be able to make the listener feel something but it was too much for me.

This album was popular in my early teens so I have a lot of memories from moments and music videos on MTV from these songs. A lot of great songs that I still listen to too this day and still love. Maybe its the memories, maybe its the songs just being that good. Either way this album will be my background noise for the rest of the day on repeat. As it has many times before.

A juvenile but undeniable classic. Epic rhymes and dope beats yo. That said, the skits are just as annoying as they were 25 years ago.

All my general Eminem thoughts in my review for The Slim Shady LP still stand; it's all intentionally offensive, so it's hard to rate appropriately. I almost wish this album were in a foreign language so I could just say "sounds cool" because it does, in fact, sound pretty good. I wish I could throw out about 5 tracks, though. 3.9

Another 5/5 from middle school. I think this one actually holds up worse than the slim shady lp. It’s strange looking back and the legend he now and listening to him do two separate lame gay jokes to ICP in this album. So not 5 now looking back but I think it eeks out a 4 still.

A pop culture assault and cartoon violence rap masterclass.

Puha det er svært det her. Hvordan skal man gribe Eminem an?

Nostalgia plays a role in my review, but damn, this was so formative and integral to getting me into rap. This has definitely aged extremely poorly in some areas, and was probably rightfully criticized at the time. However, the songs are great and I owe my appreciation for rap to this record. I fall into the camp that, despite there being an autobiographical bend, it is intentionally shocking and not to be taken literally.
