Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Sometime it's like the algorithm has read my mind. I've been wanting to listen to afrobeat because other bands I like incorporate afrobeat into their music. This was a lively and engaging album but I wasn't super into it. Femi's voice was great and I appreciated the backup singers and instruments complementing the music, but ultimately it all kind of blurred together for me.

Liked it, but both the album and the individual songs felt overlong. Got a bit samey to my ears- everything felt like the same groove and tempo.

Jazzy - which i liked. Songs felt too long.

African Jazz. Upbeat and happy rhythms get your feet tapping

I enjoyed how different this was from most of the recent albums in this list. It was a welcomed departure.

It has some flaws in that it’s probably too long, and it could use a slower track or two for some respite from the breathless, breakneck tempo of the rest of the album, but this is good for the most part and Femi is a chip off the old block.

-idk this artist so im very excited to experience this -these songs are so long -i like the instruments all together -i like the jazzy sounding elements in these songs -this ended up being really great background music for me making toast and dropping it on the floor and then having to toast new bread -not enough singing for me personally

Really enjoyable. Felt like beach music

After listening this album, I’ve realised that I don’t like afrobeat. Is good music, I admit it, but it’s not for me.

Good festival music

It was fine.

Was fun.

Näin jazzkin kuulostaa hyvältä. Taitavaa ja mukavaa, vaikka jääkin helposti taustamusiikiksi - sopivaksi sellaiseksi.

African Jazz with a heaping helping of social justice.

This album's pretty okay, the production and instrumentals are excellent throughout, really propelled by the rhythm section. Surprisingly diverse too, but a lot of the songs go on too long and are overly repetitive, and basically every vocal performance is identical across all tracks. Not a bad record, I think I could grow to like it more even with its flaws.

Hauska ja mukaantempaava. Tuli mieleen Apollon afrosunnuntait missä aina tulee fiilis et ois ulkomailla

Quite enjoyable.

I liked the instrumentation of this album, I thought it was very impressive. It's just not the genre that I really listen to so I didn't love it.

Great music but just not for me. Very upbeat.

Strong 6

Felt a bit long but was some honking good sax

Afrobeat bangers - not usually my bag but still pretty good.

Decent!

Good afrobeat album. Some of the tracks feel a little long, but I enjoyed the listen.

Didn’t make it through that much but enjoyed

I really liked this, it was fun to dance around my house and clean while listening to this.

Approved. I must be listening to these albums at the right time because I don’t hate any of them as much as everyone else.

I’m struggling with how to rate this album! Femi Kuti is obviously talented. But I don’t love this genre and I wouldn’t seek this album out to listen to it again. 5 stars for talent, 1 star for how it fits into my personal taste in music.

No individual song stood out but the whole experience was fun

First time hearing. Very reminiscent of the type of brass and melodies played by DMB. Afrobeat style could be an influence. Very different, but enjoyable background music.

Pretty good

Great backgound music, including for a long car ride through the central plains during the drab wintertime.

Right off the bat, just by the album cover, I know it's not something that I'm used to listening to. In the desire to expand my musical diversity, I started listening to it. The first song has a nice beat and a catchy rhythm. With R&B, reggae, and of course, African beats, it's a nice blend of sounds. After more time listening throughout the day, I like the vibes. Jazzy, rasta, big band-ish, calypso, etc. Nice to hear while working. I could see situations where this might be nice to hear outside with friends.

Not bad. Got a little bored with it after the first few songs though.

I normally am not a fan of world music. Initially I kind of wrote this album off. Listening to it again I kind of liked parts of it. Not quite a 4 but 3.5 I think is fair

I really appreciated this album and it was incredibly artful. I don’t see it being something I keep on rotation but if I heard it while out and about, I wouldn’t mind a bit.

A rad listen

Sounds great but it's so good damn long !

Quite enjoyable, certainly uplifting and a different musical style.

A lot of cool moments. Funky and brassy with plenty of Kuti's African influence. The rhythm section is fantastic, steals the show. Hard to choose a favorite track. This would be fun party music. One of my favorite "world" albums I've heard on this list, if this falls into that category

Very fun, a little long

I was really enjoying this, but then it was somewhat ruined by my teenage son asking why I'd been listening to the same song for half an hour. I couldn't shake that, so my rating went right down to 3 stars. Maybe it should be 4?

Sunday brunch vibes... in a good way.

Trumpet sounds. Reminds me of marching band. 3 out of 5.

I dug it.

I do really like Femi Kuti. However, his music does seem to get a bit repetitive after a while.

interesting .... never heard him before but listened to the whole album and liked it

it lack the energy of his dad's music.

I'm pretty sure I've never listened to a Afrobeat record, so let's go! Musically, this is a jam, you can tell how much every musician and performer loves this style of music! It's very soulful, funky, makes you want to dance. I can imagine, the popularity of this music in Africa, but not much outside of it, it isn't very mainstream. Although the music is quite nice, it isn't very relatable for me and I find it hard to find connections. I do appreciate the musicality of the work and the cultural impact it has on Africa. Key tracks: Wonder Wonder, Survival, Plenty Nonsense 6,5 out of 10

Afrobeats

Not my style but funky and jazzy which I do like a bit, some songs drag on with little inbetween still good overall tho

Tulay.

Not bad to run to

Nice record full of very interesting rythms but maybe a little too long for me.

I liked it but it felt quite long.

20th December 2022 Listened across the day as we went skiing in Alpendorff then chilled by the pool. Really enjoyed this, it is pure vibe. 3.5 if I could.

I used to think that Femi Kuti was Kid's dad. But then I realized that there was no relation. I think I should get my ears checked. Speaking of getting my ears checked, I don't think listening to this album helped much. Lotsa cacophonous calamities on this album. It's upbeat, fun and rides the line between something that I might listen to and that I won't ever listen to again.

Upbeat. Spunky. A fun listen.

Lekkere afrobeat.

Some seriously great grooves on this. I don’t know if it will be in my regular rotation, but I’m glad I listened to it!

Well, this was better than expected; I really liked Survival, while the other songs were mostly competent as well. 3/5

While the album was enjoyable, it felt like a lot of the same stuff was being repeated on different songs. It's a vibe, but not something I expect to listen to again.

I learned about Fela Kuti in my history to west africa class, so it was interesting to see a lot of the same themes of pan-africanism present in Femi's music. Anyways, when the afrobeat hit it HIT, but when it didn't I was ambivalent; I think a lot of the longer songs started skewing repetitive after minute 6. It was never bad, but not all the songs grooved to the same extent. That being said, I had a great time using this album as baking music, would love to explore more of this genre, but I'm not adding this to my everyday rotation or everything.

Musically rich and groove-ful album. A really pleasant listen, but it runs a little long. Fave Songs: Stubborn Problems, Plenty Nonsense, Frustrations, Changes, Survival, Live for Today

I'd clean the house to this.

Very energetic afrobeat music which I enjoyed for the most part, but at some point I started to lose interest. I also thought the lyrics were a little on the nose, and therefore distracting from the music.

This album seemed like a bit of a weird one for this list. I understand the Fela Kuti albums on the list because they were groundbreaking, both politically and musically. This, on the other hand, sounds like pretty normal afrobeat. The Wikipedia page was not much help, as it just explained that this album introduced afrobeat to a wider audience, but doesn't explain how/why. Overall, I don't love the production of this album. The bass guitar has that muzak tone present on lots of albums in the late 70s/early 80s. Overall it's fine, but not particularly interesting, especially when contrasted with Zombie, the Fela Kuti album I got previously on this list 3/5

Kudos for something different. Or should I say Kuti's. Me me hahahahah .....

I want to return to this album

A bit ecclectic, but Ginger Baker is great in this.

Just pure sax and percussions. Really soft btw

Mukavaa menoa, tuskin kuuntelen uudestaan tho

74/100: This is not something I’d normally listen to, but I’m definitely appreciative that the generator forced me to. This album just gives you a pep in your step. Every song is so lively and full of energy. I will say, the lines about women wanting to do like men, men “changing themselves” to women, women marrying women, and men marrying men seemed to carry a problematic tone considering they followed the line “in these crazy, crazy times.” I don’t know, maybe Femi Kuti meant it in a good way, but this album is from 1995 so I doubt it. I guess besides the possible (probable) sexism, transphobia, and homophobia, this was a fun listen to? I don’t know, weird note to end it on man.

Modern African jazz. Good to listen to.

I really liked it at first but it started to get repetitive with the beats.

I didn't dislike this, but this might be the first time I listened to an album and thought the tracks were too long. All of them. Apart from a 30-second intro to one song, the shortest track was 5:59. Most of them were over 8:30. Like I said, I didn't dislike this, but I didn't like it enough for the track length to not wear on me.

While listening to this I was working away, and at one point I was thinking that I must be getting near the end of the album. And then I looked over. NOPE. You, sir are on track FOUR. That's when I saw the lengths of all the tracks. No songs need to be 9 minutes long. And most of them on this album were that long. Not a bad listen, but way too long.

Groovy!

Enjoyable listen. not usually something I listen to, but there was nothing I didn't like and the musicianship was top-notch. Just saying it's not something I would listen to everyday and I would have to be in the proper mood.

Favorite Songs: Survival, Frustrations Unlike anything I've really listened to before. Plenty Nonsense gave me Hawaii Five-0 vibes.

Quite enjoyed this. Good to just cruise along to

Some good afrobeats here. Not quite up to his iconic old man in my opinion, but I can see why this album did well internationally.

Jazzig, grooving

More brass than I was expecting for "AfroBeat". Fun in general, but felt like it dragged on a bit sometimes

I didn't expect to enjoy this but parts of it were great, particularly in the first half of the album.

Aardig muziekje voor de achtergrond. Sommige stukken doen me denken aan Graceland van Paul Simon. Waarschijnlijk vanwege de typisch Afrikaanse ritmes. ***

Pretty good, some different vibes. He has clearly an opinion and the lyrics are not hiding this. Sometimes too long and repetitive but overall enjoyable. Favourite song: - Wonder Wonder

this is great. plenty nonsense is fun!

Fucking great

This was my first taste of proper african music. I like the lyrics, but a lot of the instrumentation was unfamiliar to me. Nonetheless, I liked the general 'vibe' of the album. Politically driven as well. Don't have much more to say on the album, but Femi is cute.

I din’t Listen to the whole album but I enjoyed what I heard. 3*

It was OK.

Easy listening jazz

What a jazzy album, though by Apple Music's genre, I should say funky! A great mix of jazz instruments and African beats and vocals. Good album to end the week on!

A really nice international funk type project. Nothing too distinct, but it was a good listen. Favorite tracks: Survival, Stubborn Problems, Live for Today. Album art: Nothing too special here either. An Africa-shaped hole burned in burlap, with a band photo. Certainly not the least interesting we've seen, but it's a bit bland. 3/5

OK. No expert in Afrobeat.

Interesting but too repetetive.

Good working music. To dip in and out of.

Might not have been in the right mood, but this was entirely too long. I enjoyed the beats and the groove, but it wasn't enough to carry it for over an hour.

Pretty enjoyable but found some of the songs to feel repetitive. From other albums in the genre I know that songs tend to repeat the same grooves, however then my expectation is that the groove better be really good if I'm going to hear it over and over for awhile

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Good rhythms and worldbeat sounds.

love the sound - album just too long for me

I've listen to a lot his father's albums who I love. This is by fat the best album by femi, not quite as good as his late father but still enjoyable.

Sometimes one simply is t in the mood to listen manically paced Afro Pop. This was one of those times. To be fair… it’s a good record and in the right frame of mind would be a good listen.

Great to see something that is not Eurocentric come up. This has powerful beats and important messaging. A blast.

Nice. Another I'd likely never have heard without this site. Not a genre I'd obsess over but this was something different

Interesting African Jazz, probably cool to hear live, but not my thing for day-to-day

It was an OK album with some parts I enjoyed (the jazzier parts) and some parts I did not enjoy (the ones with stronger proportions of African music styles). On the whole it was a good experience with listening some not unpleasant music in a style I'm not familiar with at all. But in the end, it's not really my type of music and.

I enjoyed pretty much every song while it was playing, but getting through the whole album is just such a task. The songs are so dense and energetic that it gets exhausting going through the process of building each track 9 times. Will give it a 6 for now because I do really enjoy the music, just if only it was 2/3 the length it’d be easier to get through. 6/10

This started out really strong. Those first few tracks are catchy as all hell and they get into bone real good. But then it felt like more of the same the longer it went on. By the end, I wanted that beat to just stop, to change up for a minute, but it never seemed to. It's a very infectious beat. But like more infections, after a while, you wish it would go away. Still, a very solid bit of musicking here.

It's a sound I like and could listen to a lot of - which, oddly, is why it doesn't rate very highly. The real potent stuff I tend to leave on the shelf for special occasions. This is something I could have choogling along in the background most days. The rhythms are fun, the brass arrangements are punchy and Kuti has an expressive voice with just a touch of sandpaper. All to the good. What this otherwise fun set lacks is grabbability - and nor do I feel the need to accost a man by the lapels to implore that he listen to Femi Kuti. Pleasant without being essential.

Similar to Craig, I was thoroughly enjoying this for the first half hour. 45 minutes later I was less captivated by the experience as a whole. That said, I don’t have much of a complaint beyond this one. Really like Kuti’s voice, as well as the background singers and even when the lyrics are on the nose (as in “Wonder” and the pondering of a United Africa) it still totally worked for me. Also, “Plenty Nonsense” is a darn good title for just about anything that needs a title. I’m just now paying attention to the track listing and seeing that there are two songs called “Nawa” and they come back to back on the album. The first is really only a brief appetizer for the main course, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this done before. Good tune(s).

In enjoyed listening to this album. If it wasn't on this list I probably would never run by this.

Didn’t even remember listening to his father’s album but I gave it 3 stars and said it had some enjoyable back ground funk. I’d say the same for this.

Good vibes

Fun album to listen to while working, I like the rhythm of it.

Not as good as his Da, but still pretty good

Pretty cool.

Tight! Aika vahvasti tää on kopiota isänsä musiikillisesta perinnöstä. Ehkä erona on sit vähän erottelevampi miksaus tjs seisariin verrattuna. Groovyy shittiihän tää on, mutta aika tyypillistä afrofunkulaa! 3/5

Hyvää on.

This was a fun listen that makes me want to see how Femi Kuti’s music might have evolved over the years.

Keeping close to his father's model. Great playing. The production had a bit too much 90s sheen, but it did mean that everything stood out clearly. I always appreciate a prominent bass!

Ug. 3 altjhough thought it was five. Just found it annoying after a while.

Babity fun, but went on a bit. Better than modern 'afrobeat'

A solid, fun album. Jazzy, funky, and totally chill vibes. Didn't adore it so I probably wouldn't revisit, but it was enjoyable. Fave track: Survival

Enjoyable, summery music.

Granted, I'm not into the Western African World Music scene, but after some exposure to Femi Kuti's father Felt and Ali Farka Touré, I had higher hopes for this album. Femi has it tough, being the child of a legend and while this album is a good listen, I don't grasp it as much as the others. Femi Kuti's self-titled album is a fun listen, spanning jazz, fusion, punk, afro-cuban, and soul. Some of the songs suffer by being way too long and repetitive. 3/5.

this was a cool listen! it was something out of my norm and i made sure to really listen as a result. every time the horns were present, they dominated!! the horns definitely made the album great. some great themes here, too.

6.5/10 plus aimé que ali farka plus jazzy

Musically very good

bit repetitive. bit repetitive. bit repetitive.

This album wasn’t bad but it def started to drag on since it’s 73 minutes of traditional African music. Not great bike riding music

really good, almost as good as his dad

Afro-beat combined with some James Brown's funk music, highlife and jazz. (6/10) FT: Wonder Wonder

A chip off the block.

fela, femi, femto?

Funky afro-beat

I was really enjoying it but then I looked and it was still missing one half of time play. Nice sounds nice rhythm but it was loooong

Good vibes and fun listen, but a bit repetitive and draining after a while.

Infectious, high energy stuff with great African rhythms.

Not my favourite but not terrible.

I don't know what to really say about this. It's hard to resist the rhythm and the beats here. And if you listen to it while you're working or hanging around the house, you'll definitely be grooving around unconsciously. Nothing not to like here, but as I say about a lot of these music-centric, international, and jazz albums - the performance aspect likely outshines any recording. There's only so far an album like this can really take me.

I took a deep breath and I can smell the earthly scent of this beautiful continent. Afrobeat is a nice upbeat genre that conjures images of festivals. This album nailed that festive energy. Most of the songs are a bit overlong and I'm not a big fan of those vocals. But still, I enjoyed the overall vibes of this one. Definitely deserves spot in that thousand and one sized list.

Bon mais je n’y retournerais pas.

I didn't know this artist. It's cool, good saxophonist.

There's good songs here and Femi is a talented musician but the production hasn't aged well at all. Could definitely use a remaster

Enjoyed it, something different in this context of 1001. Didn't love it.

So hard to listen to this without constantly comparing it to his father's music. I really wish he had gone in a completely different direction so that you could listen to his music more objectively. I can understand why he would want to build on what his father had built though, especially as at this point his father had pretty much stopped recording music altogether. He does a good job trying to maintain his father's legacy I suppose, but to me this just sounds like an edited down Fela with a dash more Juju/Highlife thrown in here and there. Being recorded so crisply doesn't help it to my ear either. It has its moments but mostly it just makes me want to go listen to Fela instead.

I overall enjoyed it a good amount, but unfortunately it was a bit long for me without a ton of genre variation, if it was a little shorter I'd give it a 4 and live I'm sure 4.5+.

Not something I'll go back to, but good music with a great beat

Unexpectedly really fun listen. Great jazz grooves, some of which were reminiscent of some 70s soul/funk but with the African chanting thrown into it. Found some of the songs to be a bit too long with lots of repetition but a fun album nonetheless.

Very interesting. I liked it, cool african style drumming along with fun jazz.

Nice enjoyable music.

Kinda fun World Jazz thing? (African) Listen if you want to feel sophisticated.

Interesting.

3/5 decent album, but...

Decent, I liked it.

Musically it’s good. I liked having it on in the background while I worked. It didn’t make an impact though. It’s just not for me.

3.6 - Femi continues Fela's legacy. In fact, to me the two sound identical: staccato rhythm guitar, strong dance percussion, big brass, political lyrics.

Engaging

The oldest son of Feli Kuti, Femi Kuti is just as talented! There are just some days when this is the perfect thing to listen to - today, for me, was one of those days. So glad to welcome this album into my life. I absolutely loved this album and I can't wait to get to know it better.

Cool! Kicky and catchy. That is all.

really african, not so bad tho

Man, I don't know. I think it's for me I Want to rate it higher but I don't know why.

Enjoyable listen of not a bit repetitive. Drags on a bit but I would revisit if in the mood

Afrobeat. Mejor de lo que esperaba.

i actually liked it fkr a little while o thought it was just fun and interesting but after awhile it got reallyyy repetitive.

Apple music marks this as "funk" - which...it is not. Categorizing music often isn't easy so how to categorize? I've seen "Afrobeat" which, ok. World+jazz+fusion maybe? For the most part this is simultaneously easy to listen to (passive listening) yet complex enough to actively dig in and appreciate the music and musicians on an individual level. My personal issues with it are that most of the songs just go on too long and soon become repetitive which that alone kind of knocks this down a peg for me - it's not the length alone that gets me, but each of these could probably have been cut down to around 4 minutes. All in all I like the music but it simply got a little tiring. 5/10 3 stars

Expansive and lively with little variation.

Lidt sur afrikansk jazz

Nice music of a genre I don't listen enough to

I'd put it on. Well done.

It's infectiously upbeat, optimistic, and energetic with a great sounding mix. The into to Nawa was especially upbeat.

Not something I would listen to regularly, but I liked it. Good afrobeat grooves. 3 stars.

The compositions are too long and improvised. Obviously the musicianship is amazing, but as a live album this would probably have made more sense.

Probably the most Africa sounding album so far, interesting to listen to for sure

Multi-instrumentista.

- Fun afrobeat with engaging musicianship - Somewhat repetitive and boring in parts but nice in the background - Some sections are jazzy and engaging but big-band makes it a little messy.

Actually got quite into this. Glad I gave it a go

I might need to listen to this again and my rating might get higher. I enjoyed it.

Some good moments here, and great musicianship. But ultimately not for me.

Solid vibes, good for some beach or cookout tunes. Not wheelhouse for my tastes but adjacent.

African style jazzy world music. Quite enjoyable but I doubt I will listen to it again. Another great artist for name checking.

Another example of what the US people understand about "world music", nice álbum but nothing special.

It had a very good sound, not sure if it can be played outside of the album though.

I have heard of Femi Kuti before, but I can't say if I've ever listened to any of his music all the way through. "Frustrations" was the track I enjoyed the most, followed by the fun little funk of "Nawa (Intro)". A few tracks kept this album in the 3 star range.

Some good fun tracks, can see myself dipping back into it, but doubt I'd ever listen to the whole album again

jamz on jamz thematically similar, but plenty of variety on the album

Nice vibes, will listen to more

Good, but not nearly as good as the work of Fela Kuti. Often times feels too polished. A nice piece of work though.

Some decent jazz and I generally like African-based popular music, but this one really didn't resonate with me.

Afro Jazz I think? Kind of fun!

Kind of jazzy. Not my style, but I understand why it is one of 1000

Was fun. Easy listening

One of the pleasant surprises of the list. I was not aware of Fela Kuti's son music career; the record is pretty strong. Fierce funk and jazz with long arrangements and appealing choruses and leading voice

Cool African sound. Some interesting longer tracks with long instrumental sections. Grooves are unusual but very cool. Instrumentation and production has a bit of a 90s sound, but the music is compelling enough for it to hold up anyway. It has a bit of jazzy vibe. Lyrics are a little corny.

Ritmos africanos. Alegre, movido.

some real groovy ensemble, african group with themes of prospertity, non violence, peace, etc

Really cool album to get introduced to! Looked up Femi and his story is pretty cool too!

Great African jazz, lots of different styles though with some very hectic moments too.

Nice to listen to

Interesting chill music, with potentially interesting lyrics

Kinda fun africa/jazzy jams

Man I just woke up, this artist is amazing blablabla.

Seemed ok. Unfortunately got talked over and eventually turned down to an inaudible level

Bra groove , stört långa låtar dock

Good stuff, love the afrodeat mix of horns and straight guitar.

Good energy and fun to listen to albeit a bit samey

This was energetic and I wasn't too bothered with the longer song lengths.

I'm not very familiar with the Kutis' body of work, but I believe I enjoyed Fela's tunes more on first listen (though to be fair I do not remember). There seem to be some good lyrical themes here, but the way I listened to the project was not conducive to picking them up fully. A satisfying listen, if a bit long; At this length, I'd rather hear more explicit improvisation.

Good African swing!

I'm just not that into afrobeat. It was fine but nothing stood out at all.

pésimo

African folk music just not really my vibe.

This is alright but not as good as his father's previous album I got, which I believe was the first album on this list for me.

There's something about the Kutis' brand of Afrobeat music that I just don't enjoy.

Quite liked elements. Wouldn’t revisit, but top musicianship and some good rhythms and melodies.

Although not my thing, I have to give a nod to some of the music that was really nice is parts.

Pretty good but I mostly hear a lesser version of Fela, think I'd rather go listen to that. The son of a famous musician is a tough one.

Even tho I thought it sounded good, there were way too much instrumentals, the songs were way too long and it all ended up blending together. I liked the vibe but a whole album is a no.

No, I'm done with this list, come on, how many "hit" records from Africa must you subject me to?! His dad has two albums on here already, both of which were not enjoyable, so you had to toss one in for his offspring? Is this really an album I must hear before I die? It's not. African jazz, you can't get much further from my sweet spot. I barely made it halfway through, after the 5th 9 minute song I threw in the towel. Not my thing, must be someone else's. 2 stars and that's way generous.

Femi Kuti is not the sort of music I would naturally choose to put on, but I can absolutely appreciate how good this album is. The musicianship throughout is brilliant and the whole record is packed with groove, rhythm and infectious beats. What really stood out to me was the variety across the album. There are elements of jazz, funk, afrobeat and soul all blended together, which keeps things interesting and gives the music loads of energy and movement. The instrumentation is excellent throughout and there’s a real liveliness to the sound. My only real criticism is that the album does start to drag a little towards the end and probably could have benefited from being slightly shorter. That said, it was still a really enjoyable and impressive listen overall. Favourite tracks: “Wonder Wonder”, “Survival” and “Stubborn Problems” were all great tracks Least favourite tracks: Nothing here felt completely out of place or skippable Album artwork: Standard album cover

make my head bob, even though I find not too much I like in this

Not for me. All tracks are too similar.

How deep did the author of this book go to find this album?

The music is fine. The pan-African lyrics is like a poor man's Bob Marley. His dad's live album with Ginger Baker was better. All of these songs sound the same. Over an hour of this is going to be tiresome. If this was just instrumentals it would be better. I'm realizing albums can get bumped full stars by just hitting me at the right time or based on what I've listened to recently. It doesn't help that the individual songs are very repetitive and very long.

Another album that I just think got me on the wrong day. If I heard this playing in a park, I would think this is super cool. But not something I would be able to put on for my own purposes. Also, I think I could use about 3 minutes less on each song (must be my iPad kid attention span) which might have moved me from a 2 to a 3. Season: True Autumn Favorite Song: Frustrations

I really enjoy Fela Kuti, but this didn’t do it for me. This sounds dated to me in a way that Fela does not. The music is fun and energetic, but both the beats and the lyrics get repetitive.

Nicht mein Style

No private session used for Spotify. This is another one where I fear the authors put on on a dashiki and tried to be eclectic, but I gave it a go. Turns out it was more jazz than African rhythms, so I didn't hate it. The 1h13m run time was pushing it a bit.

tried so many times to listen to this im so sorry i cant do it

Honestly this added nothing to my life and it was way too long

Id probably love to hear this live but didn’t need a record of it

You could listen to 2 minutes of each song and get the idea ... there is no reason for these songs to be 8 and 9 minutes long.

Not my favorite genre

While its not my kind of music I really enjoyed the experience of listening to something outside of my comfort zone and getting to hear some good music.

Enjoyed this to start with but I checked out halfway through. This is impressive and I think I would enjoy it in smaller bursts or in the background but I can't imagine myself going back to it fairly often. Playlist track: Live For Today

The vibe and music are nice overall, but it was waaay too long for what it has to offer. So much, that I can't go for a 3 stars.

piacevole

favorites: tracks 1,3,8,9

Felt like all the songs sounded the same. Very danceable and instrumental. Don’t know if I would listen again but it was fun to listen to a genre you never listen to.

Cheerful album in tone and interesting in parts but forgettable largely. Understandable as to why he is regarded as a pioneer but this is very much an album for fans only

Not my thing

It's tolerable, though not my cup of tea. I would actually give it a 2.5 if I could allocate on a half point basis.

Well, not my thing

Ts shit belongs in a pride movie or at a rally with black women twerking. It had some good jazz elements but I was falling asleep. 2/5

Nice vocals and sax playing but feels excessively long and I very much lost interest.

Nigerian jazz? This has potential. Wonder Wonder is very upbeat and good although too repetitive. Survival has a nice trumpet and sax melody. Frustrations is okay but pretty much the same as Wonder Wonder; nice sax outro though. Nawa has a nice rock groove. It also has the chants over or between the vocals like Wonder Wonder and Frustrations, which is getting frustrating by this point. Cool in the first song, but gets annoying. Onto Stubbor Problems and it sounds the same. Album is also a bit (lot) too preachy. Started pretty high quality but I lost interest fast. It was all the same. Wouldn't mind listening to a track or two again but the album as a whole, no.

Fine but a little too global for my taste

Not really my thing

Son of Fela this is another afro-beats album full of catchy rhythms and a mix of funk and jazz melodies. The playing is fine and the songs are long and an interesting mixed bag of world music. Worth a listen but not a keeper.

Listened Before? N Sorry, didn't listen to this for long. Not my cup of tea. Seems well put together though. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wonder Wonder

what is going on these songs are groovy but too long and not my typa groovy

Probably pretty great when it first came out. But afro-pop has come a long way and this album sound bland in comparison.

Du skal ikke videre til Oslo. Første låta er funky, da.

Nah, sorry Femi but this just sounded like bland generic music you’d hear in a restaurant or maybe on the radio in the Sims 1. I can see them all with their little arms in the air saying woooooo

I wanted to like it i really did

Way too long

Some really top-notch playing here from a superb band (and excellent sound quality) but a lot of time the music is just two-chord structures that don't really develop into anything interestiing. Kuti is a talented saxophonist and a charismatic singer but that can't compensate for the weak material.

There’s a lot going on on this record. The production is great, musicianship is tight. I don’t even really mind that every track is ten minutes long. But it sorta feels like I’m listening to bits of the Lion King score at points, and other times it feels like Latin jazz. Not my speed at all, but it was done well. 2.8/5

Not my style but happy sounds

Just do to a bit of a hiccup, I have listened to this album about four times now but my opinion hasn't changed, I just find it boring. Rating: 2

Got better as it went, far too polished. Smooth jazz influences ruined certain songs

There are a lot of nice noises, rhythms and grooves going on here. But they are all a bit long, a bit repetitive and feel a bit 'loose' for my personal liking.

love the vibe. songs are nice but way too long for my taste (this seems to be a problem i have with quite a few artists). since this wasn't my type of music by the time i reached the half of the album i was pretty bored. my favorite tracks were nawa and changes!

World music just isn’t my jam.

DNF just couldn’t get into it

2.2 2x listened over multiple days but didn't really enjoy it. interesting and not horrible though.

Really good coffeehouse music. Not my jam. 2/5

I don’t know, it’s fine.

Didn’t hate

Carries his fathers torch, sure—but the production and polite horns make it feel more lobby than Lagos. Fire dimmed, not out.
