Beautiful
air has the magical quality of sounding so familiar but like nothing you've heard before
Atmospheric. Have added the film to my watch list.
Amazing soundtrack
I'm kind of a sucker for a concept album. This is a really good one. There are places where it feels like it drags or loses cohesion. But in its high spots it is poetic and beautiful. The arrangements are lovely and hauntingly appropriate.
Random thoughts: * This music really matches the tone of the story/movie. It’s a perfect match. * I’m down with Air. This is a great dreamy/trippy listen. * I prefer the instrumental/vibraphone version of Playground Love. Check it out! * The spoken interludes added to the overall feeling and was good artistic addition. * I’ll be listening to this one again.
Enjoyed the ambient, chill vibes. 4/5
Great soundtrack, ominous and moody 4.5
I should really rewatch this movie. 4/5
The first score on the list. It feels like Sofia Coppola would have gotten Elliott Smith to do the first song if she could have. It seems a little odd and against the spirit of the project to include scores or soundtracks, same with compilations or greatest hits. As a score, I really like it. As a popular music album, I like it less. This works because I've seen the film, I'm not sure this stands by itself. Dead Bodies is the best track on the album.
Great album from a great movie.
Favorite: The Word Hurricane
Highlights: Bathroom Girl, Highschool Lover. In a nutshell: growing pains. Doctor: What are you doing here, honey? You're not even old enough to know how bad life gets. Cecilia: Obviously, Doctor, you've never been a 13-year-old girl. Air capture the mystique of Sofia Coppola’s film (and Jeffrey Eugenides’ book) with haunting beauty and their trademark atmospheric soundscapes. They bolster the story of a summer in mid 1970s Michigan. Cecilia Lisbon attempts suicide. No-one knows why. The mostly reclusive Lisbon family- specifically the five Lisbon sisters- is the fixation of four teen boys, intrigued by the five sisters they only see in school. As a standalone album, it's a good downtempo meets ambient score. It's what you'd expect from Air. If you have thought about reading the book or watching the film, do that first. The last track is a spoiler, and at the same time serves a tense summary. Overall: 7/10
Nice find! I had never heard of this group, or this movie, but this was quite moving.
Really pleasant surprise. Had. Ever heard of the band or album before. Chilled.
3.7 2x cool album, never heard of it before. catch up 7/8/25
As good as background music gets.
HATED "Suicide Underground". The track just sucks, but also smacks of commidifying suicide to seem edgy or cool. Could be dead wrong about that though; I haven't seen the film. Loved the rest of the album.
Great ambient soundtrack to an amazing movie.
I really enjoyed this! Funny because I don't like their more successful album much but this is very different. Calmer, quieter, looser, less groovy, often darker, deeper, more absorbing and far more beautiful. So many tracks are good but 'Bathroom Girl', 'Afternoon Sister' and 'Dead Bodies' stood out on first listen. Overall it reminded me of Mogwai, even touches of early OMD and Radiohead. Some really atmospheric stuff here. Will listen again for sure. 9/10 if I could :)
It seems Air have picked up some traction since our first album of theirs, Moon Safari, came up a few months back. I recall them having under 3M monthly listeners, and they now sit at 5M! How cool. Another immediately classic sounding record from Air, in my opinion. Playground Love has a timeless, jazzy, almost bossa nova feel with some killer sax tunes. Bathroom Girl brings some pretty incredible guitar playing into the mix, creating a complex soundscape. The Word Hurricane takes you on a wild ride that builds up to a fascinating crescendo. All in all, I just love the journey that this record took me on. In my older review, I said that Moon Safari was like an elevator to the stars. This felt like a similar elevator, but not a worse one by any means. I really wanted to give this 5, to make up for the 5 that I should have given to Moon Safari, but the lack of context that the album has outside of the motion picture it was made for does force me to knock it down to a 4.
Rewatched the film in addition to my listens. It's great, and the Air soundtrack is a big part of that. (Collaboration is a certain artistry in itself, of course, but the centrality of the music to a degree diminishes Coppola's achievement, in my mind. Like, the Ce Matin-là montage of Lux Lisbon makes you fall in love with her too, but are you really just in love with the song, in love with that French horn? Maybe that's unfair.) Suicide Underground is awesome — almost feels like watching the movie. The motif in Playground Love is so great, and the Phoenix collab really works. ”She was the still point of the turning world, man.”
I like this a lot, and it seems to grow on me every time I revisit it. Very atmospheric, very Air.
what an album. I’ve never actually seen the movie, which is an embarrassment for me, but it’s one i’ve now got motivation to watch. I knew I liked air already, but this was spectacular. big fan of all the instrumentation; the sax, the synth. favourites include empty house and dead bodies. 4/5!
Dad- 9 Mom- 5 Mike- 9 Lori- 9.5 Michael- 10 Miles- 10 Cole- NA Avg- 8.58
there’s no way for me to talk about this album and how it makes me feel without talking about *the virgin suicides* film. hearing just a couple bars of any one of these tracks sends me back to being 14 or 15 with all of the anxiety and listlessness that came with that age, a very real sense of entrapment. these songs still make me feel extremely uneasy, almost sick to my stomach. weird shadowy memories. i was surprised how visceral that emotion was upon listening to them for the first time in years. she was the still point of the turning world, man… fav tracks: playground love; bathroom girl; the word hurricane
this was very coollll it felt very late 90s/early 2000s in a good way. it also reminded me a lot of Pink Floyd because of the prog rock element so i liked that combination of influences. Fav tracks: Playground Love, Bathroom Girl, The Word Hurricane
First listen to a marvellous movie soundtrack, not something I'd normally listen to.
Admittedly I’ve never seen the movie this is the soundtrack for, but I know what it’s about, and it’s a perfect match. Wasn’t sure what to expect because I didn’t love the other Air album on this list, but this was stunning. This soundtrack is so atmospheric and moody and makes me feel like I’m in the story, with even just a cursory knowledge of what the story is. I’ve heard a lot of really great film scores, and I completely understand why this one is so critically acclaimed. Wish I could give this a 4.5, but it’s just not quite 5 stars for me, but I still absolutely loved it. Definitely deserves to be on this list, and I’m so glad I heard it as I likely wouldn’t have sought it out otherwise.
This was a weird one for me, at first I thought "alright" but felt unlikely to listen to it again. And decided it deserves two stars specially compared to the outstanding Moon Safari. But as it went in it grew on me, it started to feel like a 3. A solid 3 by the time Ghost Song came along, reminiscent of Mike Oldfield in general a nice homage to 70s space rock but in keeping with Air's brand of trip-hop. However, a couple of tracks after it started to feel like a 4 stars album, not because any individual song brilliance but because of the compound experience, now I knew I would definitely be back for that haunting but beautiful atmosphere. I wasn't too keen on the title track at the end due to the speaking part but didn't feel too out of place and when it ended I was yearning for more feeling the album was too short. So definitely a 4.
Ethereal, exquisite, incorporeal.
4.0/5.0: Great
as far as movie scores go, this was really great. its well played and its well produced. having never seen the movie, listening to a movie score without context isn't as great. the last song in particular is really out of place but overall this was still really good
I think film soundtracks rarely stand up well outside the context of their respective films, but this is one of the exceptions 4*
Weird but I really liked it!
Had not head this before. Really enjoyed it. Made me want to rewatch the movie.
I think I enjoyed this more than Moon Safari
Moon Safari and Virgin Suicides was all the Air I needed for like a decade. Anytime, Anywhere.
This score has inspired me to watch the movie, if that doesn't speak to the score's brilliance, I don't know what else does. The album is 'airy' and the atmosphere it creates is soulful and haunting. This very much reminds me of one of my favourite albums, but more grim and darker. The production of the project is really really good, loved every song on here. It is like a shot of espresso, short and strong, but I could listen to an hour long album with the same energy and not feel the time pass. This album also has this strange ability of trapping and influencing me with the loss of tracking time. This is straight going onto the list of albums that I keep in my rotation and listen to it regularly. The final rating based on my current music taste: 8/10 22 April 2025
This is quite an impressive piece of music and works together as one seamless whole and creates quite an engaging and almost spiritual feel to it. I do enjoy generally listening to this ambient style of music anyway, but this one felt compellingly coherent, playing I suppose to the requirements of the film.
Very pleasant listen
A perfectly eerie, mysterious and nostalgic soundtrack for an eerie, mysterious and nostalgic film.
This is technically more of a score than a soundtrack (sorry to disagree with the album cover), but I do love scores. This is probably the only score by Air that I know of, but it did remind me of the movie (that I haven't seen in decades). I don't know what to really say about it besides that. It's function really was to accompany a movie I liked back in the day, and I think it did that great. These days, I'm not sure how it works as an independent album, but I still enjoyed it enough to play while working.
Interesting sound, not entirely unique/orginal but it’s good for background
Concept albums and soundtracks are close relatives from my point of view. And both are difficult to judge. This album falls to silo of better ones on soundtrack scene and momentarely I forgot the point that I was listening a soundtrack. I haven't seen the movie and this gives some distance idea of soundtrack.
I really like AIR
Beautiful and evocative. Playground Love is a classic. Tender and lush
Going in blind and having never seen the film, this was a great listen. Super chill and interesting.
I really enjoyed this instrumental dream pop, impeccable though a little forgettable background music.
You know what? This rocks
I love the album cover a lot. It's very artsy and collage-y and discordant but at the same time very simplistic and beautiful. It's probably what I like most about this album, to be honest. I don't like how it's made for a movie. Obviously it serves that purpose well and I will probably watch that movie now, but half the music having no real lyrics or whatever annoys me from a purely listening perspective. I'm sure it's awesome if you watch the movie, though. The first track, Playground Love, I know I've heard a lot on social media or something. Very popular, I think. The Word Hurricane stood out to me. It reminds me of some of the weirder songs I like, like Narrator by Squid or maybe the Pavement is My Pillow by Headaches (which I've been listening to more now -- thanks, Evan) or She Works Out Too Much by MGMT or We Want Your Soul by whoever the hell that's by. Probably because of the talking. Dirty Trip is also very interesting ambient music. I like this. I wonder how this kind of stuff plays into a real movie. And it's interesting that it starts sounding shitty at times. Dude, just found out Danny DeVito's in this fucking thing and now I HAVE to watch it. Either it's gonna be a hilarious movie or Danny DeVito's gonna play a serious role, which are actually equally funny outcomes. Highschool Lover makes me sad. I will never know the sweet, soft sound of highschool love beyond hopelessly unrequited non-crushes. Anyways.. I think because it's so much instrumental, even though the instrumental is pretty nice and soothing at times and interesting, I have to max it out at like 4 stars tops. I'll give it like strong 3 because there were some tracks I really liked -- I added Dirty Trip to like 5 playlists. I will certainly listen again and I hope the album art inspires me to do something similar.
Almost as sexy as the Prince album that appeared earlier in the week.
I liked this a lot, but also put it in the slightly backhanded compliment category of 'good music to work to'. It's nice, quite ambient, interesting enough to sustain it, but in no way obtrusive.
I’ve never heard of The Virgin Suicides before, but apparently this is the soundtrack to it. Naturally, this means I don’t understand the intended context for the tracks, and I instead simply listened to it purely from a sound point of view. And you know what? It sounds really nice. It’s a really chilled out album that’s hard to really define, besides thinking that it makes sense to be a film score. I guess it’s very ambient. I enjoyed this quite a lot.
This is my second Air album this week. I gave the other a 5, so we’ll see how this one fares. Conclusion: I really liked it. More gloomy than Moon Safari, but that makes sense given the movie it was made for. Turns out I’m an Air fan. Some of the tracks are very reminiscent of the Oxenfree game soundtrack. 4/5 Highlights: Ghost Song
8/10. This is an interesting and relaxing listen. For some reason, I felt like improvising vocals while listening to this album.
With the risk of sounding pretentious, this records get infinitely better when you have the accompanying film fresh in your memory. The album ends where the film begins (spoiler alert much?), and the music and imagery just perfectly connects with each other. A solid record, but an even better soundtrack.
Nice and chill
cooles werk von Air, abwechslungsreiche hintergrundmusik. erinnert es nur mich an Jean-Michel Jarre, oder ist es einfach die herkunft aus frankreich?
I liked this one. No clue what the movie is about. No idea who Air are, but this was an enjoyable little listen. It was giving me Flaming Lips vibes due to its artsy weirdness and use of synths and noises as music. 4.5 ⭐️
been wanting to both read the book and watch the movie for a looong time but due to my procrastination habits I got to listen to the soundtrack first
There are two ways to consider this album: As a standalone work, or as an official score for a motion picture. regardless, it's excellent. As a standalone work, it is peak Air - breathless, and dreamy, and ethereal while still being accessible, and having enough substance to cause you to nod your head or tap your toes. As the score to a movie - woof. It doesn't get much better.
Pretty interesting. Easily the best electronic album on the list so far I've come across. In my opinion.
Beautiful haunting album
Cool, nice as some background music
I listened to this while I was walking at night after the rain and it instantly made me feel like the tortured protagonist of an indie movie - didn't hate it.
We discovered Air a year or so ago now - they were one of the earlier appearances on our 1,001 journey - and we have grown to appreciate their laidback sound.
Delicate French electronica, paired with quotes from strange and wonderful film. What’s not to like?
ethereal & moody, very intriguing
When I first saw this album I said to myself "UGHHHHHHHHH. AIR AGAIN? NOT EVEN A SOUNDTRACK?" but it was beautiful and was perfect (knowing the movie). The drums were were a standout. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
Surprisingly good. A lot of the instrumental songs reminded me of Pink Floyd which was a big plus. Overall, quite enjoyed this one!
This is the only Air album I've never heard before, I suppose I had always been discouraged since it's a soundstrack as opposed to a normal studio album. But you know what, this album definitely delivers. They are still amazing at creating their dreamy ethereal sound, except this time it's packaged as effectively a concept album.
Not what I expected, really good
Must watch movie again
To be honest… awesome music. Really effortlessly implements some fear and chaos into its tone. Some of it reminds me of the music that plays around Halloween in Bully, which I guess makes sense given the suburban malaise of both…. Liked this a lot and don’t even really remember the movie/its use in the movie.
Got this CD from the library because it wasn't available on Apple music which was a nice experience and it's a great soundtrack to a movie I haven't seen! Excited to watch it now
Being a 13 year old girl really is the worst thing in the world.
This is cool. If I was coming at it objectively, I’d probably lower the score, but I’m a total mark for dreamy instrumental music. Must-listen? Ehhhhhhh, probably not.
I honestly expected to hate this. French electro pop, and a movie soundtrack to boot? This is why I'm glad for this 1001 album challenge, because I really never would have listened to this album otherwise, and I really enjoyed it. The first track was probably my least favourite, and the last track my favourite. I loved the ambience, and could definitely see myself listening to this one again.
A great movie and sound track. It sets the mood straight from the start with Playground Love. Slow, grey, peaceful, sad....
I like the vibes of this album a lot, it is mostly cozy but has some gloomy moments. I haven't watched the movie at the time of writing this review, but I kinda want to watch it now after hearing this album. Standout tracks: Playground Love, Afternoon Sister
Great movie
Some catchy and addictive beats right there. It felt like a journey.
Should probably be a three, because it is mostly atmospheric and vibes-based and not hugely creative or interesting in that space either. Air have what should be quite an insipid, anodyne sound but it's somehow instantly recognisable and just gets to me on some level and transports me. Was also going for a two or three but as the album moved towards its climax, along with the film, the darkness, dread and awe increased. Loved the last song so a win for recency bias maybe
Realy enjoyed this one and the experience was great. Felt new to me and very fresh. And although it felt like the mixture of Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Cigarettes After Sex, the sound is still very unique
Favorite Track: Playground Love
This is fantastic. Mellow, trippy, almost jazz. I like the vibe.
-okay so upon learning this was a film score, I decided to also watch the movie, which I’d heard of but not seen. The score is really fitting and unique especially for the movie it was made to accompany -I absolutely love the “twinkling” electronic effect Air use in their songs, it’s so fun -Favorites are Playground Love, Cemetery Party, Dirty Trip, and Dead Bodies
First soundtrack generated by this list I think. Surprised there are not more. Very atmospheric - while listening I was wondering what was happening in the movie at the time. Kinda want to see it now. This is definitely more than just moods and tones. I liked this. Never heard of the composers before - I think I’ll look them up.
first listen really really liked this and am going to explore them further
Thought this was a sweet album of hauntingly lovely music. I hadn't heard of the movie that it was the soundtrack too , an enjoyable listen
Definite TEMU Radiohead and Floyd vibes. But I still really like it. Creative instrumentation, relaxing, mysterious, old school synths even for the time.
4 pleasantly surprised. First electrónica album I’ve enjoyed. The production was great and ghost song’s crazy droning thing hit like a truck
Wow, what a fantastic score. I have never watched the movie, nor read the book but am aware of the heaviness. The score performed by Air does an amazing job matching the weight of the content. The ambient pop has strong undertones of haunting gloom and the end result is really cool. Listening to this leading up to Halloween, I’m feeling a good handful of tracks would seamlessly fit onto a Halloween playlist. 4 stars
Cool ambient and atmospheric. The last track really takes away from the listening experience but makes me very curious about the movie
I have only heard of the film. This is a great soundtrack. Atmospheric and melodic. I’d like to check out the movie now to see it in action.
An instrumental soundtrack from a movie I hadn’t even heard of didn’t exactly sound promising going in. But wow—this one really surprised me. Air did a great job capturing a dreamy, haunting atmosphere without saying a single word. The music feels nostalgic and eerie at the same time, like flipping through old photo albums or watching a sunset in slow motion. It’s moody without being depressing, soft without being boring. Definitely one of the better scores I’ve come across, and something I could see myself putting on in the background again. Didn’t expect to like this one, but here we are.
I haven’t actually seen The Virgin Suicides (yet), but this soundtrack still ably combines both the vibes of 70s easy listening and a more modern electronic sound. The voiceover on the closing track is extremely sobering.
Muy tranquilo.
A film score that doesn't need the film as much as the film needs the score. Stands alone quite well. Atmospheric and moody.
Muy tranquilo.
Atmospheric electronic rock? Gave me Pink Floyd vibes which I loved.
Liked it a lot. ethereal vibes.
Although I really wish some tracks here had a bit more happening dynamically, this album is a sonic gem full of ear candy.
Me ayudo a estudiar. No sabia que de aquí viene la frase "Dr es claro que usted nunca a sido una chica (adolescente) de 13 años". La batería en este disco es preciosa.
4.5
This kind of grew on me the more I listened to it. Not sure it will be in the regular rotation but I will check out some of their other albums.
pretty gorgeous and cinematic. not sure if this would work better if I had seen the movie, but I still enjoyed it very much! Solid 4
Beautiful, but very tragic.
This is #day13 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... I must admit I was a little skeptical when I saw that this is a movie score. Yes, I know Air and the omnipresence of their Moon Safari on similar lists, although I never really paid attention to this band. But... movie score? Stupid me! It's like early Pink Floyd got equipped with synthesizers and went electronic. I'm fairly impressed by what I've heard on this album. It hit all the right spots. Entirely enjoyable. And I've got to revisit the movie soon. This is a 4 out of 5 this time. Looking forward to #day14.
When the first track came on and was like, an actual song, I thought I was in for a different experience than I ended getting. Playground Love is the best song on the album, establishing a mood that sounds a bit like a funfair Noir, but the rest of the album is glossy, and occasionally trippy electronica that I also enjoyed. But I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d have enjoyed an album that continued on the style of the opening track. It does make me want to watch The Virgin Suicides however, so I think that’s done a big part of it’s work well
Though I love Air, I'd never seen the movie so wasn't aware of this soundtrack. Another incredible record from them!
The fist song slapped, and the rest was pretty good for a mostly instrumental movie score
Lovely album. Good electronic music to work to
3.5 stars. Pretty good ambient soundtrack. Great to have on in the background. Standout is "Dead Bodies".
I liked it.
Very cool album.
I feel like I would’ve enjoyed this more if I’ve seen the movie. Still pretty good nonetheless.
Too bad about the spoken word. Otherwise very good atmospheric album.
Not particularly exciting, but still beautiful in its own way. 'Clouds Up' is the best of the album, and I can just imagine its haunting mood working wonderfully for the film. 'Dark Messages' and 'Empty House' also sent chills down my spine, and 'Ghost Song' perfectly reinforced the musical theme. One of the best songs was the almost psychedelic 'Dirty Trip', which actually put me on a trip. All of the tension which had been built up throughout the album was perfectly quelled with the closing song 'Suicide Underground', an acoustic track that ended the story with a melancholic tone.
It's a good listen for sure, but it feels as if you miss some of the heft of the pieces by not watching the associated movie. Still a nice listen that flies by.
This might be one of my favorite soundtracks ever, it perfectly fits the film and Coppola’s world building. Even the closing track, which interloops dialogue samples, gives me chills. B+
Haunting
A hauntingly beautiful sound that I'm sure encapsulates the essence of the film. Unfortunately I haven't seen the movie with this soundtrack, so my appreciation can only go so far. But it was a very interesting listen. Very ethereal and carried a deep sense of almost longing. Will definitely be checking out the movie. Top tracks: Playground Love, Empty House, Dead Bodies
The first track from this album is on my 'all times favourites' playlist, but I had never listened to the rest of the album - I have been missing out! A different feel to the previous Air album we listened to on this challenge, that it is a score really takes you on an emotional journey - which I fully embrace! So much so I ended up watching the film for the first time (I was a Virgin Suicides virgin!). I'd certainly recommend it to any Kirsten Dunst fans - you know who you are! This album captures the themes from the film: mundane suburbia, power/control, obsession, objectification and the male gaze.
Loved it
Incredible score, that captures a period past with modern flurishes
Didn’t know what to expect, but I enjoyed this. Kept a couple tracks as favorites.
Good album by a good band soundtracking a good movie made by a good Director. Right on.
Had this in the background for the first several tracks, but am really digging the mood. I enjoyed The World Hurricane a lot, as well as Dirty Trip. I've definitely heard Highschool Lover before -- really pretty stuff (as are the follow-on songs). Suicide Underground is a hell of a way to end the album. Spoken word presumably from the movie this is a soundtrack for. I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than average, but it lacked any really special punch to push it over the edge into "unforgettable" territory. The electro/synth-pop here is done very well with intermixed psychedelic elements, but is far from revolutionary. I can absolutely get down with it and will be back for more. Solid 4 / 5.
This makes me pumped for some Moon Safari and Talkie Walkie, which I assume are on here if they have a movie soundtrack by Air. Really digging the first song classic Air sound. A bunch of instrumentals to follow but most are honestly better than "soundtrack" music. Standouts to me are Bathroom Girl, The Word Hurricane, Dirty Trip, Ghost Song, Dead Bodies. Not the biggest fan of the talking on the last song, but the music behind it was awesome and I'm assuming it had to do with the movie? The drumming on this album was fantastic and a lot of cool sounds. Bummed I can't see them at the Anthem cuz I have to go to Jackson's stupid wedding. This one is a 4 juuuuuuust missing a 5
I had not seen the film, so I did not know what to expect. Having said that, the drumming on this throughout is phenomenal. There was a bit of a combo of etherealness and prog rock, which I think was the drumming more than anything else. The spoken word piece near the end was a bit... odd, but "Word Hurricane" worked for me a lot. Top tracks: "Word Hurricane," "Dark Messages"
I really liked this. I have never seen this film before, but I really want to now—next on my watchlist
Great ambient and spooky. I wasn't sold on this at the beginning but I think it's a pleasant listen that creates a good atmosphere. I might watch the movie. Taylor won't want to watch it though.
The only Air album I had heard before was “Moon Safari” which had a few good songs but wasn’t in the same elevated sphere as other pop electronic like Groove Armada, Zero 7, telepopmusik, and others. This isn’t as good of an album for the radio but I think the composition as a score is great. I haven’t seen the film in ages but the dialogue included in some of the songs on here reminded me of the disturbing plot. This was a good thing for tone setting, though I can’t imagine wanting to hear it with the movie fresh in your mind. This kind of music seems stuck in that era of mid to late 90’s to 2005 or so. Other than Massive Attack, who haven’t put out an album in forever, nobody really does this anymore. It’s a shame because it’s one of my favorite styles to put on to unwind, and this album is a great example of it. I would give this a 5 but the spoken dialogue in some of the tracks kinda takes away from it. I wish this was just a plain score with no vocals.
Wie man Air kennt. Fast 5.
There aren’t many soundtracks on this list so I was surprised to see that this one made the cut. It definitely worked as a 40 minute lowkey, ethereal electronic album aside from the last song but I feel like I won’t fully appreciate this until I watch the movie. Just like how I think of lost in translation whenever I listen to sometimes by mbv. Also this being on here over the daft punk tron legacy soundtrack is a robbery.
Really liked this! It was so peaceful and relaxing, I listened to it while making my way to the train and it was very atmospheric for that experience. I’d definitely put this on when reading or napping, which is a complement.
Love a good ass soundtrack
I've heard tracks by Air before on various trip-hop or post-classical playlist. For example, I'm absolutely sure I've heard Highschool Lover before, and it was a standout track on this album. They're definitely good at what they do: mostly understated atmospheric music with a lot of depth and feeling behind it. That said (and I've said it before), why are there even soundtracks on this list? This album would definitely have been better if it weren't constrained by being a soundtrack. Mostly, it's pretty good music. But then you have a track like Dark Messages, which is fine for background sound in a movie but shouldn't be anywhere near a music album. Still rounding this up from 3.5, but I'm pretty sure I would've preferred listening to one of their other albums that's just an album. I guess I'll just do that next.
Moody..
Einer der besten Soundtracks.
Good music, fantastic drums.
Muy tranquilo.
Pretty good, especially for a soundtrack. It hits a vibe that I generally like. End of having to say things.
I have never listened to this whole soundtrack. Great movie and a great music accompanying it from a great band. Really enjoyed this.
Well-composed art rock, and even though it’s a film score, you can feel an emotional heartbeat bleeding through every nook and cranny of this. It’s not an album I’ll go back to all that often because it’s just a soundtrack, but as far as those go, this thing is about as good as it gets
A masterclass in instrumentals. 4/5
I’ve heard ‘Playground Love’ before. This is another excellent album from the masters of ambience. It is varied enough to be interesting (for example, drums on ‘The Word Hurricane’ — in fact that whole piece) but also intoxicatingly repetitive. However, each piece is short enough that the band avoid straying into dull ostinati, instead leaving the listener with a craving for more. I haven’t seen the film but I’ve read the book and this fits well with the atmosphere! 9/10.
I was surprised to find out this wasn’t really a soundtrack at all but rather the score. I don’t think I’ve ever sat down and listened to a random movies score before so I’m giving it a little bit of a higher rating just because it was interesting and a fresh listen on this list. Is the quality of said composition that high? Probably not but still pretty good. There were a lot of songs that are in minor keys but use a lot of major chord progressions which was pretty fascinating but then they become to reliant of the half step minor 3rd to major 3rd change somewhere around the middle of the album and it starts to get a little redundant. This would be fine in a movie setting as it gives characters or ideas a theme, which all the great ones do (i.e John Williams, Howard shore, etc), but no so great in just a listening setting
Starts off with a great tune and continues on with it a a motif throughout. Not sure how it would set with me if I had watched the movie before listening. Good album, plan to watch the movie to see if it gives greater impact.
One of my favourite bands of all times, one of my favourite soundtracks of all times, one of my favourite movies of all times... I almost feel 14 again and it is all coming back to me... This album holds up though, nostalgia or not. It sits perfectly balanced on the fine line between fantasy and nightmare. Timeless Love.
Very good, I enjoyed this a lot throughout.
pretty good. weird in places but that was the point i guess.
Actually kinda enjoyed this. Felt like a mix between the Flaming Lips and the experimental side of Pink Floyd.
01) Playground Love - 10,0 02) Clouds Up - 9,0 03) Bathroom Girl - 8,5 04) Cemetary Party - 8,5 05) Dark Messages - 8,0 06) The Word 'Hurricane' - 8,0 07) Dirty Trip - 8,5 08) Highschool Lover - 9,0 09) Afternoon Sister - 8,5 10) Ghost Song - 8,0 11) Empty House - 8,5 12) Dead Bodies - 9,5 13) Suicide Underground - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,65 (87/100) I never actually watched the movie, maybe I should look it up. "Playground Love" is the only song I know, hence is my favorite. This is definitely not "Moon Safari", but it is enjoyable for what it is... a score to the movie I will watch later today. I just must!
Actually pretty good. I liked what was going on here. The album name and cover do not depict the music, so I was bit scared at first.
I like Air. Aber mir fehlen Vocals …,
Great album, crazy this was made for a soundtrack. I guess I have another movie to watch
Really awesome OST that spans indie, soul, and psychedelic genres of music. Never saw the film and probably wont but the album is a particularly good and easy listen.
A very relaxing album. I'll add this into the mix.
(March 18, taking a wee break from the generator to focus on other musical rabbitholes, as well as some fam time) March 20, 2024 HL: “Bathroom Girl”, “Dirty Trip”, “Empty House”, “Dead Bodies” Have not seen the movie, but by all accounts it’s a lighthearted, feel-good smash of the summer. In seriousness though, TVS’ prog grandeur and film-noiresque ambience make for a pretty enjoyable listen. I’m not big on downtempo 90s/00s music a lot of the time, but Air? I like Air.
One of my favorite books ever; one of my favorite movies ever. I've never been the type of person who listens to film scores as their own free-standing pieces of music, but I get why this is included. As a whole, it captures the essence of the story and presents a fully independent aesthetic. I would buy this on vinyl and play it in the background while I had a few girl friends over to gossip and drink off my bar cart. It's good background music, but there's a lot of details to unpack upon close listen. My first listen made me assume I'd never pull out individual tracks, but throughout the day, I kept revisiting this in pieces and I found myself gravitating toward it a lot. I guess that's also why the TikTok girls have latched on to certain songs to use as background sounds. It sounds like girlhood, in its entirety, and in its pieces. Just like its source materials. Which is crazy coming from 2 men. I don't know if their sonic style is really my vibe, but here, it 100% works. Not my favorite film score ever – where is Wendy Carlos' Clockwork Orange interpretations?!?! – but very good and deserving of a listen.
This album grows on you! 4/5
Beautiful soundtrack - and captures the essence of what I remember the movie to be- but also works wonderfully as a standalone record besides being the score.
Fucking love air tbh
Didnt think movie soundtracks would be on here! But this is a pretty good choice for onr. I should probably watch the movie lol but there are some killer tracks. Didnt like it as much as moon safari tho
Nice background music. I'm unfamiliar with the movie, so my opinion is solely about the music, which is: Good for putting on in the background but not necessarily complex enough for active listening.
yea idk the musics mostly p fun imo but by highschool lover i was like please just do a tiny bit more in each song. but they were fun and good atmosphere ig i also had to look up the plot al;skdjf;skldfj
“Dead Bodies” is sick but then I immediately had to listen to a plot synopsis of The Virgin Suicides.
Released in 1999 alongside Sofia Coppola's film of the same name, Air's "The Virgin Suicides" transcends its cinematic origins to become a standalone masterpiece. While not technically a "lyrics-driven" album, its musical tapestry weaves a narrative of teenage angst, unspoken desires, and the chilling specter of tragedy. Let's delve into the delicate threads of this hauntingly beautiful work, focusing on its musical composition, thematic explorations, and lasting impact. Music: A Symphony of Melancholy Air, known for their electronic explorations, adopt a more restrained approach here. Lush orchestral arrangements and vintage instrumentation – think harpsichords, mellotrons, and melancholic horns – create a dreamy soundscape. Tracks like "Playground Love" and "The Virgins" evoke a wistful nostalgia, their slow tempos and airy melodies mirroring the film's sun-drenched suburbia. However, beneath the surface lurks a disquieting unease. "Knoxville Girl" and "Cecilia" introduce discordant notes and jarring transitions, reflecting the growing tension within the Lisbon household. The recurring theme of "Slide Guitar" acts as a harbinger of doom, its mournful melody foreshadowing the impending tragedy. Production: A Sonic Tapestry The album's production is meticulous and immersive. Air masterfully blends vintage sounds with modern techniques, creating a sonic world that feels both timeless and uniquely theirs. The use of analog synthesizers and tape loops adds a layer of warmth and texture, while subtle electronic flourishes hint at the band's signature style. The production also shines in its subtle details. The distant whispers in "The Word Hurricane" add to the film's voyeuristic atmosphere, while the ticking clock motif in "Riding in Cars with Boys" evokes a sense of urgency and impending doom. Themes: Innocence Lost and the Lure of Darkness The album explores themes of adolescent yearning, societal pressures, and the allure of the forbidden. The Lisbon sisters, trapped in a world of strict expectations, find solace in dreams of escape and rebellion. "The Virgins," with its playful yet melancholic melody, captures their longing for a life beyond their confined existence. The album also delves into darker themes like suicide and the romanticization of tragedy. Tracks like "Suicide Underground" and "Clouds Taste Metallic" evoke a sense of despair and morbid fascination, highlighting the film's exploration of teenage mortality. Influence: A Legacy of Dreamy Soundscapes "The Virgin Suicides" became a cultural touchstone, influencing countless artists and filmmakers. Its dreamy, melancholic sound paved the way for a wave of "chillwave" and "nu-gaze" music in the 2000s. It also demonstrated the power of instrumental music to evoke complex emotions and tell compelling stories without relying on lyrics. Pros: Hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric: The album creates a unique sonic world that perfectly complements the film's themes. Emotionally resonant: The music captures the complexities of teenage angst, despair, and longing in a way that transcends words. Innovative production: The blend of vintage and modern sounds creates a timeless and captivating soundscape. Cinematic impact: The album significantly enhances the film's emotional impact and leaves a lasting impression. Cons: Not lyric-driven: Those expecting traditional song structures and storytelling may find it lacking. Repetitive at times: Some tracks might feel similar due to the restrained melodic palette. Requires familiarity with the film: The full emotional impact is amplified by understanding the film's narrative. Conclusion: "The Virgin Suicides" is a remarkable achievement, transcending its soundtrack origins to become a standalone musical masterpiece. Its blend of dreamlike melodies, melancholic atmosphere, and subtle thematic explorations creates a powerful and enduring listening experience. While it may not be for everyone, the album's emotional resonance and sonic beauty solidify its place as a landmark in the history of electronic music and film scores.
Standouts: "Playground Love," "Suicide Underground" Lyrics/Vocals- N/A Instrumentals- 4/5 Vibes- 4/5 Overall- 4/5 I was surprised to see this album on the list, as the soundtrack to "The Virgin Suicides." While never seeing the movie, I know its premise and the music definitely reflects that melancholy feel of the movie. The music itself is very relaxing instrumentals, minus "Suicide Underground" and the opening track. Arguably the most haunting is the last song, which reflects the end of the movie and tells the ending. The opening track was a beautiful track, with amazing lyrics and lo-fi vibes. All in all, there wasn't much that stood out because this was all background music. However, I did really enjoy this album.
The soundtrack matches the movies fugue-like state.
I listened to this while doing some school work so I can safely say that apart from the last song this is very nice study music. It had nice variety to the sound, and was musically very interesting. I have no idea what it's about other than it's a soundtrack for a movie but I like it. I found it very pleasing to listen to.
I listened to the first three Air albums again recently. So I know this is pretty good! Is this the first soundtrack we've had? It's weird because really there is only one great song and then tracks of background music weaving in the theme from the great song. And yet I'm going to score it higher than the Stranglers album which had *three* great songs on it, because I can listen to all of this and enjoy it, even though it is "lighter" listening, rather than the Stranglers where I wanted to skip stuff. I hope that makes sense!
Obsessed with Playground Love. Could listen to that foreverrrrr. The rest is good but disappointing after such a strong start. Overall it is an pretty smooth yet interesting listen. Now I gotta watch this movie?
was cool
dead bodies was a banger.
from the first couple of notes, I knew I would like this
cutting it a bit of slack as its probably better along with the movie, but as a standalone it's also pretty good
Having the soundtrack to a movie and also having zero knowledge of what this movie or what it’s about is an interesting scenario. And if I had the time, I would have liked to actually watch the movie to see the way the music is incorporated into it. Because this is super cool. With a movie so focused on love and repression and the exploration of adolescence, its soundtrack should be able to convey those same emotions effectively. And for a movie soundtrack, this does a damn fine job at conveying the emotions without the movie having to be there. It’s so whimsical and warm. Every single song feels like it’s accompanying a dream sequence. For almost every song, I was thrown off by the way the chord progressions moved. If this were a painting, it would consist solely of different shades of red and orange. There was even a moment in The Word Hurricane where a lady started speaking. She finishes explaining about the definition of hurricanes before the last breakdown happens, and it just intrigues me so much as to what way that would be used in the film. For many of these tracks, it starts off a plain ambiance, and then launches into these really heavy and dramatic passages, like the guitar and bass synth on Ghost Song. But sometimes there isn’t ever a big climactic section, like on Empty House, where they just keep adding more and more waves of haunting organs and synths with this beating kick drum in the background. It’s a surprisingly intense album for how down tempo and slow everything is. Like whoever they got to do the acoustic drums parts on some tracks has some serious chops. And above all, it’s way more engaging of a listening experience than I anticipated. It stands proudly by itself even without the need of the movie. Rating: 8/10
To start off with the review: I really enjoy Air's body of work, and while I knew some tracks from this album, I hadn't actually listened to it. Initially I wasn't sure how well listening the soundtrack to a movie would work out without remembering much about the movie, but I'm glad it did work quite well. There's a few tracks that are a bit of a lull, that presumably work much better in the context of the movie, but overall the music does a great job of giving off the dark vibe that presumably matches the mood of the movie
4.25
Very familiar with Kost of this album, most of it can be pretty passive listening. First half is a bit stronger, but if you like any of it you’ll like it all.
Puh, das ist eine heftige Geschichte! Erst dachte ich, die Musik ist beruhigend. Aber vor dem Hintergrund ist sie eher düster. Also ich werde mir das nicht nochmal anhören, trotzdem gibt es 4 Sterne.
As far as soundtracks go, this one has some seriously cool sounds. The mood is brooding yet expressive, sensual, and atmospheric. There's a solid blend of electronic and acoustic sounds, possibly paying homage to Pink Floyd and other rock giants of the 70s and 80s. The only real drawback is that the lack of vocals and non-rhythm instruments creates a hook-vacuum. The tracks aren't distinct from one another. That being said, the opening track (Playground Love) is fantastic. Love the sax. Also, Highschool Lover sounds like a vocal-less Great Gig in the Sky. Another connection to Pink Floyd.
Liked it, although not a big fan of the movie dialogue, would’ve been 5 stars without it
Traurig schön
Are soundtracks a regular thing on this list? I'm not sure I've heard that many. I guess Air's work verged on soundtracks anyway, but if we're going there I'd want to include some of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's work as well. Not to say that this isn't really good. It takes the texture of "Moon Safari" and turns it into something more coherent and less patchy. It's hard to imagine the film without the soundtrack.
Playground Love and Highschool Lover are the best songs on the album. Need to listen to this in a different setting then the one I'm currently in.
8/10. Wow, last song went and spoiled the whole movie, never would have expected people would die in this movie.
I’m not watching the film
Cool album, nice grooves and the drumming is very tasteful even when it breaks out.
Kovaaa
dreamy and spooky
A classic ambient album for a famous movie. It paints your time with pastry colors and nostalgia. It kills you from yearning something you can’t describe. Too much sighs per minute.
Interesting album. It’s not necessarily my cup of tea, but it’s still good. Would I listen to it just for the sake of listening to an album? No. I’d probably only listen to it while working.
This is way more solid than I expected. Great background music and vibe. Makes me wonder what the movie is like.
It's a movie score. It's well done. You can just listen to the whole album and vibe.
calming. i love it. so smooth
Best nice relaxed soundtrack
Solid soundtrack to a solid movie. The actual songs are top notch...the background stuff is a straight vibe. 4/5
Ethéré, inspiration de Cyriak, l'impression de voyager
Chill album.
A good album, with nice relaxing music perfect for a background soundtrack. My favourite song on it was Highschool Lover.
Pretty good!
7/10 - Album flew by. Makes for easy background listening and must be tightly constructed track list.
Some very chill music from a great band. But it's an odd choice for this list. The music is good but not as good as other albums by Air. As a rare example of a film score in this challenge, again, it's good but hardly the best one out there. I'm always happy to revisit an old Air album but I really can't find anything significant about this release. I'd replace it with 10,000 Hz Legend of Talkie Walkie.
On first pass the opening track took some time to warm up to (vocals...meh) but after that comes the short instrumental "Clouds Up" and this is definitely more what I was hoping for. It's just that I can't decide whether it's something I'm voluntarily putting on (other than...well, right now of course) at any point... ...which is what I had thought after maybe 3 or 4 cuts. But now that I'm done I admit this is chill, semi-ambient, and I absolutely *will* put this on again :) - hypnotic in a way to make me feel like the last 40 minutes I've been living in slow motion. Biggest and maybe only real negative is that I'd have liked to hear an instrumental version of the last track - eliminate that narration over the top which is too distracting and mostly pointless on an album; I'll pass on that cut on further listens. Final addition: weekend albums always have the biggest chance of rising in the ratings and this was no different - after a few plays I'm noticing other weirdness that I absolutely love in terms of the music; e.g. <nerd alert> a few tritone progressions that are both jarring and gorgeous. Also upon repeat listens I'm down with track #1. Sum: "It's different, alright..." Not at all like a typical "album" whatever that actually means. I really like it. 8/10 4 stars.
Very vibey, liked it!
A surprise chill album. A pleasure to listen to, if a bit uneven.
A lovely Tuesday morning listen
Amazing. Such a good album that makes me want to watch the movie once again. Really good guitar and drums and the electronics are just so freaking amazing. This is an easy 4/5 !
When this came up I was like, I’m not in the mood! But it really is quite, quite good, even if you can’t separate it from its source material (I have not seen the movie but I read the book ages ago—the album features spoken excerpts from the text). Air are not exciting, as artists, but of course that’s not the point. Interesting work, would revisit. I appreciate that as the album progressed I got more and more into it.
Thought this was great. Interested in the movie now as well.
Did not know immediately that it was a soundtrack to a movie and found the songs to be quite ‘background-y’. But style of music seemed really cool and have started to explore more of ‘Air’
This was an interesting record given it being a score done for a film. I feel like to properly enjoy this I would have to actually watch the movie, most of my favorite scores are from movies I've seen specifically. Apart from the chill ambient electronic nature of a lot of the tracks, the ones who had more instrumentation were my favorites. Playground Love is a fantastic lounge sounding track with a lovely little yet simple piano hook, wavy strings, jazzy drums, and a great saxophone solo that feels like a conversation all its own. The Word Hurricane has a great rhythm section with a great drum performance backed by a steady bass groove, which builds up like a hurricane in fact, before exploding into a grand climax in the end. Dead Bodies has a weird oddly upbeat urgency with a jangling piano line and a driving rhythm section performance. The key track was the final song, Suicide Underground, which actually was a narration of the events apparently following the end of the movie and made me read the plot of the movie itself. It's a very hard rate because I feel like extra context is needed for this one, but I did enjoy a lot of the songs here enough to warrant a 4/5!
Melancholy and hauntingly depressing. Loved itt
Really makes me interested in the scenes matching with the soundtracks. Some of the songs really need the support of scenes instead of listening on its own.
Great ambiance, can imagine this to be higher rated if you know the movie
Air <3
Why is it that all it takes is a certain style of bass and some strings and it instantly sounds like Air? Moon Safari is one of my all time favorites, and although this isn't quite at that level, it's still pretty great.
Went by without upsetting me, doubt I'll ever listen again.
I need to watch this movie.
Wow, makes me want to watch the movie.
I was looking forward to this because I've long suspected that I would like Air. I haven't seen the movie this soundtrack is for, but I remember it hearing about it frequently when it was in theatres. I love electronic music and although I don't usually go for chill/ambient stuff, I enjoyed this. I suspect I liked it because I'd just come from a few albums I didn't care for, but whatever! Four stars!
This is such a vibe. Whatever mood they set out to create is achieved with incredible strength. That’s Air’s biggest accomplishment, their biggest weakness is keeping the listener interested and engaged. These songs are beautiful, without a doubt, but not all are exciting. A large part of that hails from a lack of lyrics. Only one song has singing and there are two other spoken word tracks, which are able to achieve what few other artists can with spoken word. These two tracks add to the album immensely, whereas spoken word songs can sometimes bore the listener as they have no real purpose. I really like Air and this album. Wish more people knew about them. 4/5
I'm very close to giving this a 5, it's a fantastic soundtrack that works perfectly as an ambient album in it's own right. Playground Love is an incredible song that hooked me soon as I first watched the film. Funnily enough, that was only about a week and a half ago, great timing. I'll be replaying that song and the rest of the album a lot over the coming weeks i feel.
Mä rakastan tätä leffaa, kirjaa ja levyäkin. Ei nyt ehkä paras ikinä, mutta menee tunteisiin ja on tosi tosi nätti. Sopii leffan tunnelmaan täydellisesti.
At times, dark and oppressive, and at other times, breezy and dreamy, this album truly is a journey. I have never seen the film that this soundtrack accompanies, and a part of me doesn't want to. My own journey from start to end may very well and be different from what was intended. But oh, was it a journey. (As an aside, I am tickled pink but the accompanying Wikipedia article on this work mentioning a collaboration with members of Supergrass, as one of their albums was the last one generated before this)
First time I heard this album I thought it was nice.... but, over the past year I've become a fan. Both of their albums on this list are really great. Standouts: Playground Love, Empty House, Dead Bodies, Suicide Underground. 4/5
Litt spaca men chill
I enjoyed this a lot more than Moon Safari. It creates a special mood that makes me want to watch the movie again.
I have not seen or read Virgin Suicides, but I do like Air. Some of the spoken word was distracting and out of place, otherwise there were some great instrumentals on this soundtrack.
Sacre bleu!
A lot of awesome instrumental tracks
Very cool, trippy psychedelic intrumental music. Does it have a spark, "it" factor? Yes it does, the whole album is very trippy 4/5
Big sense of space. Not afraid to move slowly and build up. Its often worth it. Thematically is very consistent if not a little stale at times. A few tasteful surprises. Somber but with some brightness. Instrumentation is usually flowing a few times synthesizers come in with a contrasting tight pulse or sharp edge. I've not seen the film, I was enjoying this album for itself so the last song with what I assume is a tie-in to the film was a little jarring. 'Dirty Trip' 'Cemetery Party' 'Highschool Lover' are highlights for me.
I liked this moody, atmospheric soundtrack. Very of its time in a way I clicked with.
I wish this had vocals but it's a good soundtrack. Very Pink Floyd-ish in a way that I like.
Great chill out album, pretty unbelievable it’s a soundtrack.
Forgot about this, really good
Didn't expect to see a movie score on here, and was kinda dreading it because I've never seen the movie - but it was pretty cool! Yes, of course there are repeating motifs and it's designed to be played in the background, but I've certainly listened to scores before, so it's not a genre I'm averse to. I wonder if there's some Tangerine Dream or Goblin on this list... we'll see what comes up. Also, the spoken word sections added a lot to it
I am usually not the biggest fan of ambient music but this album was really good. It is just a nice listen from start to finish with a great variety in the sound of the songs. A lot of the time for me ambient music can become stale due to the lack of strong vocals or instrumentation to differentiate tracks. This album combats that by having songs with many different themes and sounds. Coming into this I had never heard of the movie and had no prior knowledge of this album or the band. I think my favorite tracks on this album were definitely "Dead Bodies", "Highschool Lover", "Playground Love" and "The World Hurricane". The only song I would say I was not a fan of was "Ghost Song" because . Overall I would give this album an 8/10. A really good album but it is still Ambient which I find hard to give a rating higher than that. Definitely one of the better Ambient albums I have ever heard though.
I remember seeing the Virgin Suicides movies years ago, but I never listened to the score until now. I am a sucker for Trip Hop. This album has some beautifully mellow vibes, with some building intensity in places. Because it is a score, taking out of context from the movie it loses a little.
Wow, that was way cooler/psychedelic than I imagined. I usually don't pay attention to movie scores, and I definitely don't listen to scores of movies I haven't seen before, but this got me hooked almost immediately. I really liked "Suicide Underground" and the narration parts - it reminded me that all the weirdness I had just listened to came from a darker, more somber place
I remember watching the movie & knowing Air did the soundtrack, thinking it’s so very dreamy, so very “Air”… it’s still that dreamy sound today…
Super neat
A bit hard to rate given it's a soundtrack. Overall I really enjoyed this. Super spooky/distressing. Now interested in watching this movie.
actually quite liked!! enjoyed playground love.
Air have produced some amazing music. All I Need is probably one of the best tracks of the 1990s and almost certainly one of the best tracks out of France. But Virgin Suicides is definitely an active listening album. It isn't bad, but you kind of need to have another focus for your attention that isn't the music. I mean, this is 100% intentional by Air. It is, after all, a film score rather than an album of music for its own right. There are repeated motifs in the music, and this again is perfectly normal for a film score. Characters have themes, and events are underlined - and this doesn't necessarily have the same impact without the accompanying visuals. It's a bold inclusion in the list, but there's enough to it to make it worth a listen, in a late 1990s French space-beat electronica kinda way.
It's Air doing an instrumental album for a movie. Getting very similar vibes to Daft Punks Tron album, as we're looking at a couple of Frenchmen exploring instrumental concepts and different versions of the same rhythms. That said, its all built around airs ethereal dream pop vibes. This is their second album, and i can see that coming off of Moon Safari this showing amazing talent from the guys.
I often find that soundtrack albums don't fully work without the film, but this definitely does. There are some real high points that would grace any album by Air, especially "Dead Bodies".
Sort of like Dark Side of the Moon without vocals. Nice, easy-listening semi-ambient, mostly instrumental music. Very pleasant.
Ambient yet driven, the album feels like a concept yet acts like a diary of singular emotions. Feels like Portishead and Poe had a musical baby.
Yndisleg tónlist, Air klikkar ekkert.
Very movie background music sounding. (Just realized it's a soundtrack... that makes sense). Reminiscent of some softer Pink Floy. The word hurricane - Opeth-ish bass.
Great album from a great movie
Pychedelic vibes and organ is dope. Dark Messages and on is a vibe.
I’ve enjoyed Air on these lists. Don’t listen to it outside of this context.
I think this is the first soundtrack that's come up in this challenge, and it's one I'm very familiar with thanks to a close friend. As much as I love Air, this isn't a particularly riveting listen. My favorite is Playground Love & heard it dozens of times, but Suicide Underground is just a creepy recap of what happens in the movie & the rest is a tad boring. I prefer Moon Safari over this album, but I'll give it four stars for nostalgia, the movie, and because I love this band.
Was decent background music.
Layered, wall-of-sound instrumental. Kinda proggy, electric, heady, good for endurance exercise probably. Kinda went over my head on the first listen, the second was better and I'd recommend if asked.
This is excellent. Ethereal and elegant.
An excellent soundtrack to what I seem to remember is an excellent film, but I haven't watched it in many years. 4+/5
This definitely got played a lot in-store when I worked at HMV around the time of its release, but I don't know that I ever took time to listen to it outside of background music during work that was frequently interrupted by customers. I've also not seen the movie or read the book, so I don't have more layers to my experience with this today. It's a lovely album. Pretty much exactly what I would expect from Air scoring a film. Except for the final piece, which was less expected during my listen but awesome - especially as an album closer.
This album just feels great to listen to. Great drums in the pocket, harmonies and progressions keep you guessing in a good way, and is super cohesive. * Playground Love * Dirty Trip
Man that first song was dope. The rest was solid enough. I didn’t even realize this was a soundtrack while listening. Well done. Light 4.
I had no expectations going into this. I haven't seen the movie or heard of Air. I really enjoyed the album. It was oddly familiar throughout. Calm and cool. Perfect for working with this in the background, although I was distracted several times by the feeling like I had heard this or that somewhere before. One example that I was able to pinpoint: Highschool Lover -> Everybody by Mac Miller.
I enjoyed this album the first time I listened to it. I really enjoyed it this time. I've never seen the movie or read the book, but the album tells a beautiful tragic story.
I've never heard of this artist before but as soon as I saw they performed this score with a band called Hot Rats, I needed to listen to it. I don't know if all the songs have minimal lyrics but I'm into it. I should mention I've never seen The Virgin Suicides because it came out before I was born and I just haven't gotten to it. It's not really a movie I've heard a lot about so I didn't put it on any list to get to. So far, this is a nice album to just hang out and listen. Because of the minimal lyrics, you don't have to be actively paying attention to get every detail.
pretty nice \ love it!! и обложка классная
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would.
Playground Love
Good but nothing crazy
Very nice. Reminded me of early Pink Floyd
This is a good album! I never saw the movie or heard of this soundtrack, but its very good. Not a lot of top 10 tracks, being a soundtrack and all, but its got good theming and its easy to get lost in it. Definitely better than average. 3.75 out of 5. 4/5
Hinga.
I used to listen to this album all the time. Great to revisit.
Although I'm not familiar with the film (I plan to watch it soon), I found the moody mellotron-heavy ambience of this album to be very pleasing in its own right. The music reminds me of Tangerine Dream, Popol Vuh, or early post-Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd (all of these artists notable for some soundtrack work).
Chill. Melancholy. Absolutely captivating.
Não conhecia e achei muito bom. Disco pra ouvir várias vezes pra poder entender tudo que ta rolando. São muitos detalhes. Produção fantástica.
Very chill. Good to have as background while going about my day.
Good. Great work background, but definitely not just background
Muy tranquilo.
For ambient or chill-out music, this feels pretty darn good, especially since, in my opinion at least, many of the tracks have a long-lasting theme or direction. I wasn't a huge fan of the spoken parts, but thankfully they're limited to just two tracks.
Fabulous production. The drum progressions are incredible, haunting storytelling despite being largely instrumental. Awfully tragic, yet still so good, but is still extremely heavy - especially the final track.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Playground love, Empty house
It's Air - it's good.
This takes me right back to freshman year of college.
Probably would be better in the context of the movie but I enjoyed the songs on their own nonetheless
Mycket bra. Flera riktigt bra låtar. Soft och skönt plattan igenom. Möjligtvis att det kan bli lite tradigt i längden. Första och näst sista låten är de bästa.
Very much like
