Huge start, then fairly forgettable
Ytlig film, ytlig musik
I prefer Moon Safari (1998)
Cool dreamy soundtrack. I'm surprised that this is a genre on here. I was a fan of the movie as a teen, but I feel like if I wasn't I would have enjoyed this less.
Great background music, so for a soundtrack that makes sense.. I watched this movie way back in the day but don’t remember much about it. Decent listening but more engaging albums score higher for me, 3/5
Solid not as good as moon safari
Quite solid; not big into electronic but the shorter song length made it a bit more captivating. Should probs watch the film for the full effect
I enjoyed the moody ambiance of this album, particularly "Playground Love" and its sultry saxophone. I'd listen to this again.
3.5/5 Very entertaining. Found out this was a soundtrack-ish album. Recognised some scenes when I looked it up and am curious what the movie’s about.
I likes a lot of the ambiance on this one, but it often kind of fell too much in the background and I forgot to notice it. That can be a sign of good ambiance, but it's hard to say since I forgot to notice Standouts Suicide Underground 3/5
Ok not great
Interesante como música de película, pero...eso es todo, y ya.
I got the first Joy Division album yesterday, and I think that’s made me realise that I prefer my electronic music to be dark and moody. This is OK. I quite enjoyed it, but nothing really grabbed me other than the spoken word elements, the last of which reminded me of The Necromancer from Rush’s old Caress of Steel album that I played to death in university.
Nice ljudlandskap, men inte så mycket mer. Coola ackordsföljder man kan sno, men kommer nog inte lyssna på igen. Kanske om jag bara fokuserar på albumet eller ser filmen?
Sounded nice, but a bit bland and too mellow
Playground Love 3.3 Clouds Up 3.4 Bathroom Girl 3.2 Cemetary Party 3.3 Dark Messages 1.4 The Word 'Hurricane' 3 Dirty Trip 3.2 Highschool Lover (theme from The Virgin Suicides) 3.1 Afternoon Sister 3 Ghost Song 3.1 Empty House 2.7 Dead Bodies 3 Suicide Underground 3 Score: 2.976923077
Oh man I loved this movie. The album really fits the vibe and mood of the movie extremely well. Not my favorite genre, but in connection with the movie it works well. On its own, not something I would choose to listen to again. 3⭐️
Very excellent mood setting for an excellent movie. Not sure if it stands alone in the way that a traditional studio album would though.
Something felt odd about this album, but seeing that it is a film soundtrack explains that. (Honestly, I wish there were more soundtracks on the list, this is my second one that I am aware of and I am 600+ albums in.) It's a very good electronic score, but there are fumbles in a few points for me - especially the narration track at the end, which is fine but seems unnecessary. Favorite track: "Dirty Trip"
This album feels like you really need to see the film to get it. I saw it years ago and dont remember anything about it. As a standalone album, it's fine, with a kind of gauzy, dreamy, pleasant vibe. Even a song called "Dead Bodies" doesn't stray too far from this. The final song, especially, with its spoken word summary of the film, while haunting, is just more off-putting than anything. I guess you had to see the film (and remember it).
I saw The Virgin Suicides for the first time this year. Its an atmospheric film, technically very well done, but it just kind of washed over me and didnt make an impact. This soundtrack here provokes basically the same reaction. Its fine, but not sure why its here. Highschool Lover is pretty iconic, or maybe its not and the movies just fresh in my mind, i dont know, its the only song i remembered anyway. I like the soundtrack but will almost surely never listen again. If we're doing soundtracks, throw some Angelo Badalamenti on there for his work on Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet, or the Straight Story, that guy was a legend
I was not expecting the dose of prog that the latter part of this album brought.
I love early Air, but this feels a little piecemeal, and I would never listen to it when Moon Safari and Talkie Walkie exist
I thought this was pretty good the first song was really good
I never listened to Air before this project, and I can say that they're a find for me. I quite enjoy their music. Since this is a score and not a soundtrack, the tracks are short, like little quick bullet points rather than fully fleshed out ideas. It's perfectly fine for background music, but I am not sure I'd enjoy it as much if I were just listening to it without other distractions. The music is lovely and Air is good at what they do. Giving this a 3 because of it being a score and not a soundtrack.
20.30, hima, sennheiser, qobuz finally some good FUCKING music!!! ei mut oikeesti mitä tää tekee täällä. tää on soundtrack? ei levy?
It's a good soundtrack, which means it's music that mostly fades into the background of whatever you're doing. I listened to it while I worked, and it just faded into the background. As an album I'd go out of my way to listen to? Maybe one or two tracks, but not the entire thing.
9/23/2025 - had never listened to this before. Nothing really stood out as amazing, but some parts especially the intermixed spoken word parts stood out as being 'off' compared to the rest of the record. Good for work/focus time.
3/5
I guess the makers of the list included this album because Air is a good band. While some of the tracks work as an album on their own, others don't.
Very chill and relaxing
Whilst I think it was a great soundtrack for a wonderful film, I don't tend to enjoy soundtracks without the visuals. This has a great few tracks however, and Air of this era were superb.
First song was deceptive, rest of album was interesting and unique. Explored a lot of sounds and genres. No idea what the movie is about based on the music. 7/10
It's whatever. It's fine. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. Prob won't listen to it again, though; it's just not that interesting. I gotta wonder, though: If we're doing film scores on this list, how is this boring (yet harmless) album here and nothing by John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Alan Sylvestri, or any number of other notable film score composers who have done way better work? 3 plain vanilla stars. Yawn.
I just can't see myself giving this a higher score than 3. It's a sound track album, it fits a mood and a tone. It isn't bad, but the purpose of it is lost as just a regular piece of music
Bit surprised to see this album here. I always thought that Air were a one trick pony in that Moon Safari was their only album of note. I’ve already reviewed that and it is an album I am fond of so wondered what was so special about this one to warrant being on the list. As it turned out I thought if anything it was marginally better than Moon Safari. A very pleasant listen although like Moon Safari it suffers from becoming a bit monotonous. One to listen to with the lights out when trying to work something out in your head. Not for a long car journey on an Autoroute as the consequence may require intervention by Gendarmerie nationale Oh La La! 3/5 8/9/25
Background music for a movie. Doesn’t belong here.
This kind of electronic music isn’t really my thing, but I found myself enjoying it, for the most part. There are a couple of weirder tracks with a lot of spoken words that I didn’t care for, but overall this one rates a 3 from me.
no es su mejor album
Cover 5 Never heard of them. Great for sleeping or studying. If I'm trying to stay awake though, not for me.
I never got around to seeing The Virgin Suicides, so I can't really say how well the music suits the mood of the movie - both were well-recieved at the time so I'm willing to accept it does exactly what is required. The dreamlike, melancholy tone that runs through the album certainly seems fitting, and, yeah, I like this - the skewed melodic themes, the instrumentation is all very tasteful... at times it conjures up images of obscure 80s TV sci-fi series rather than coming-of-age 90s drama, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. But let's not get carried away, for the most part, this is just background music at best. A thumbs up from me, but it's not going to be something I return to often.
Good vibe, very chill, but most songs were lyric-less and a little too boring.
6/10 Nice but not too memorable. Also the random monologue was a bit offputting (havent seen the movie so no idea about the context)
Could be a vibe Moody Sofia Coppola good pick
I liked Airs Moon Safari already before i started with this project, so i was happy to have this album (which i did not know) on the list. There a few really nice songs on it, but as with every soundtrack there are also some songs which only seem to fulfill a purpose for the movie and dont feel right when listening to it just like that.
All the soundtrack albums here, apart from maybe Shaft, feel like weird inclusions. They just don't run like albums. This one felt like it was added to have more Air, but we could have had Zero 7 instead.
Pretty cool instrumentation here and there, a lot of filler stuff though. Never heard about this movie
Cinematic and lush as ever from Air. My go to would still be Moon Safari but always loved “Playground Love”
хороший и приятный звук
They say you can never judge a book by its cover, but you can definitely judge Air by the name of their group. This is just atmospheric, cloudlike music. It's not offensive, but neither does it form any strong impression one way or another. It's a solid three stars, sitting in the limbo of the list.
A nice enough soundtrack album, but doesn't nail the Moon Safari trick of making music with textures from library and easy listening sound like the most vital music in the world.
Strangely hypnotic. The Lisbon sisters. What goes on behind closed doors. I listened once. That will be the only once.
Very surprised that I had a decent time with this soundtrack from a totally random movie that I’ve yet to see. I think it being a soundtrack does a lot to keep it from pure sucking: for one, it does away with any possibility of some annoying vocalist and terrible lyricism, and it also ensures that all the songs have some degree of variation and brevity. Just by those virtues, and random film soundtrack is probably better than about half the albums on this list.
This album is like living a quiet, relaxed life in an idyllic suburban environment. Calmly going about your day-to-day activities, you are feeling an overwhelming sense of inner peace. Then the next day you pick up the newspaper and read about how a bunch of girls were psychologically tortured to the point of suicide and you feel guilty for feeling so relaxed.
Air is very cool. I'm not sure why I don't get more excited about them.
I enjoyed the atmospherics but my partner could not stand it. She kept shutting the radio off
Although I loved Air's previous record, this album didn't do nearly as much for me. Like, nothing really happens in here. It kind of came and went, and I didn't find it all that interesting. Moon Safari was also quite ambient and downtempo, but it was far more expressive and powerful than this, in opinion. I mean, it's a score, it's meant to be in the background of a movies, so it makes sense. But on its own, separated from the movie (which I haven't seen), it's not that good—just fine.
Ambient-ish, with a few tracks with a bit of energy that are interesting. Overall a little underseasoned for my taste. Ok album.
I like the movie, and the music goes well with it. But this is a film score, so by its very definition, it’s background music - especially with this genre. It’s nice. The last track is suitably disturbing. Is that a recitation from the novel or the screenplay? Feels like the novel. Air in general gives me nostalgic feelings about 2000s ambient electronica.
I have only hazy memories of this movie. I remember liking it... but i had no memory of the soundtrack. I had no clue it was held in such high regard. After listening to it, it's not mindblowing, but its quite nice. Some tracks made me think of radiohead and some tracks made me think of pink floyd... but its all instrumental. It's very lowkey psychedelic synthy alt rock. The melodies are nice and catchy. The final track with the plot description was eerie in a good way. The first track with the lyrics was quite nice. It's a very pleasant album overall. I'm a fan. 3 stars.
I really like bathroom girl as a title for a song. as an idea. Bathroom Girl is cool and nice I know it. I'd walk out of that bathroom with a new found love towards connections and womanhood.
This album is what I imagine being high would be like. It is both magical and trippy at the same time. The feelings it evokes are those of eeriness, creepiness, and strangeness, but below all this there is a strong sense of melancholy, sometimes bordering rumination. It made me recollect and question all the reasons why I dislike electronic music. However, some numbers are surprisingly calming and jammy, and I would not hate to listen to them again. Though I have not seen the movie itself, this soundtrack kind of reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, Beetlejuice, and all Tim Burton movies. Just like these, 'The Virgin Suicides' contains something deeply unsettling but beautiful. In the end, this album gives me the heebie-jeebies, and is definitely not my cup of tea, but I see why it would be somebody's favourite.
French Chill-out Electropop film score, which, for me, doesn't quite work as a music album, although quite pleasant to listen to as background music, I can't imagine going to see them perform this live.
Relatively cool electronic album. The synths are neat. Maybe I would've really enjoyed it if I had seen the movie.
I thought it was cool
This would probably be amazing paired with the movie it scores. The problem with that is that it doesn’t quite work as an album in its own right. Like it’s missing something important.
Favorite tracks: Highschool lover, playground love They start to sound the same to me as the album goes on. Eerie and haunting in parts. Interesting background music but I would never just listen to it or want to put it on…
Electronic - If Moby did a soundtrack and slower with fewer samples. At times there were some James Bond type strings and other times were almost churchy organ notes. I can see how this could set the tone of a Sofia Coppola movie.
Listening in car so brief notes Bathroom girl = Fortnite lobby music, good tho V minimal, feels like a Pink Floyd jam Overall pretty enjoyable, but this is music to be seen not just heard. Feel like I’m doing it a disservice by not having seen movie. Overall 2.5/5⭐️
Its a four for vibes but a three for enjoyment
so so
Didnt hate this, but nothing stood out except the movie that it was backing. Not a yuge Sofia fan, but this will push me over the edge to dive a little deeper
Have never seen the movie - might help bring it to life. I really like the opening track but the rest of the album is just nice background music.
I'm always annoyed with this band. Their singles are so well done. Driving yet light. Melancholy but never sad. But then the rest of their albums are just ambiance. Which, I guess fits their name pretty well but leaves less than a stellar album to listen to. guess it makes sense that them as a soundtrack album artist makes sense. but again, there is very little substance here besides a mood and a single. That single makes up for so much though. It's just so annoying.
I prefer Moon Safari to this, but it's not bad. I've not seen the movie but the trailer looks like some arthouse BS.
Never seen this film. Love Air (required to breath). Still stand by that motion picture albums should not be on this platform. Although I found the music very enjoyable, it doesn't stand out as an album. It’s hard to score this due to the contradicting nature of how I feel on this album and its inclusion on this platform. 6/10
A pleasant listen. Nothing very exciting without the movie, but still an awesome score.
Positively surprised! Many decent tracks, Dirty Trips and Dead Bodies were really good, but too many tracks were more interlude-like. I like the consistently dark mood of the album
I mean, I love Air, and I love this album, but its not even in their personal top 3 in my opinion. Curious as to why it was selected.
Best Song: Highschool Lover. A short song with nice bass and a discernible melody. Worst Song: Suicide Underground. This feels like it is aspiring more to be "art" than it is to be "music". Overall: An album so understated, it sometimes seems to cease to exist. It felt like it finally started to come to life in the second half, but that only makes me wonder why it took so long to get there.
First two tracks really good. Last two tracks really good. Stuff in the middle meh.
Iha okei, aika uniikki ja tunnelmallinen mutta en usko että tuun uudellee kuuntelee
I was not expecting to see a movie score on this list, but was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Considering I've never seen the movie. Did not love the first and last songs, but everything in between was good.
creepy ending
Solid album, smoothly achieves what it has to do. Not sure if I’d listen on repeat but was a pleasant experience. Maybe a little too inoffensive but it checks out.
Soundtrack is not generally a genre I would listen to and it seems like there are quite a few on this list. Although now that I think about it, all the soundtracks I've come across here are actually music created for the movie so it's not like we're listening to a mix tape. I've never seen The Virgin Suicides, and I'm not sure if that's going to be a negative or a positive with respect to this record. Starting off moody and sad with Playground Love. I would expect the same flavor throughout given the name of the movie. And it does kind of carry through the rest of the album. It's interesting to me that this was chosen for an album on this list, I don't really see why it is included. It's fine but nothing about it stood out or blew me away at all. It excels and being background music for a film. 2.5/5
While this album was pretty good, in my opinion moon safari and 10,000hz legend are superior.
Decent soundtrack. Not something I'd usually listen to by itself, but I can see it being quite emotionally loaded in a movie. 3,9/5
Sunny Sunday morning music best served with a good quality filter coffee
Forgot that soundtrack albums were eligible for inclusion on this list. I find these kinds of albums to be as challenging as live albums when presented to me within the context of this list. I find it easier to engage with soundtrack albums when I have a familiarity with the source material, as I have a definite memory/emotion/whatever that it can be associated with. I've never seen or heard of the Virgin Suicides, so I am definitely boned in this instance Anyways, the album's alright. The "analogue" instruments are all pleasing and listenable, though the electronic tones that are peppered throughout these songs really hurt their appeal. They don't mesh at all with the other instruments, which really takes me out of the experience and hurts the merit of these songs. Dirty Trip is the best example of this. I assume the spoken word segments were taken from the movie, though the selection of snippets is rather strange. I doubt that the segment on The Word Hurricane is relevant to the movie and the schlubby-sounding guy on Suicide Underground really took my out of the album closer. Playground Love is the best song on the soundtrack. The strings are great, the jazz segments work surprisingly well and the subdued vocals are pretty cool. Bathroom Girl is another good cut - I quite like the soaring guitars on that song. In a complete subversion of what I have previously been bitching about, the almost fully-electronic Dark Messages is also quite good. The electronic sounds work pretty well when they're on their own Book time. Soundtracks are such an unlikely inductee for this list that I just have to check. Let's see. A graceful combination of sound and vision. A "gloriously sad suite" of songs. Carries a 70s Pink Floyd influence. "One of the most brilliant requiems in pop history". Nothing much that really sells me on this album, though I can vouch for it's inclusion. Soundtracks are by default an unorthodox pick. I prefer this to the Shaft and Superfly soundtracks that I listened to through this list, though I can't help but notice a recurring theme. They all seem to belong to the same genre of music, the name of which escapes me.
Chilled relaxing album.
It was ok, interesting at points.
I love Moon Safari and can only assume that will appear on here at some point if this made it onto the list! It’s pretty good and must be an awesome soundtrack, I’ll probably have to watch the film now.
I will finish listening to this tomorrow, but I’ve enjoyed it so far
Fair
This is a strange one. I think it's a great soundtrack and I am a fan of Air, but there are at least three better albums they have made, and I assume they are not all on the list. This is very atmospheric, well played and composed, but it is really just a recurring set of half a dozen tunes arranged differently. Standouts include 'Playground Love' and 'Dirty Trip'.
Lovely movie score from an interesting band. I've seen The Virgin Suicides once years ago and remember liking it. I'd love to rewatch it and pay attention to how the score is used.
Cool chill vibey soundtrack. I really enjoyed this one. I've been doing a lot of thinking about soundtracks lately and how they are intimately tied to their connected media: a movie, a tv-show, a videogame, etc. I think it makes for different listening experiences, replay-ability, and memorability, because it's so tied to visuals or moments that when you go back and listen to them without that other media, it's just kind of different, right? Not better, not worse, but just different. Listening to "Ghost Song", I am given what feels like a specific vibe and connected sections of music that evolve and don't seem to inherently be easily connected to eachother... so obviously this is scored to some visual, like a scene in a film with a shifting mood, right? There's no vocals (and lyrics) so I don't have a ton to go off of to bolster these shifting emotions. I like this, it's hard to eloquently describe but it's just a different experience. I love the album cover too, great colors and text!
I would give this 4* as a soundtrack and 2* as a regular album.
I haven't read the book or seen the movie but listening to the last track kind of sums it up (seriously fucking depressing). So, trying to put all of that out of my mind and just hear the music for what it is. Mostly it's got a chill groove thing going but it's so close to ambient that it's hard to focus on so it kind of comes across as background music. Playground Love, Clouds Up, and Dead Bodies are my favorites.
I love Air! Moon Safari is one of my favorite electronic space lounge records from 1998. They sound groovy and chill and vintage. The Virgin Suicides is lovely in its way but it is very clearly a score for a movie, so it’s hard to invest deeply here. Not bad, just there.
Having movie soundtracks in this list is a little strange to me. This is another example of the album clearly being written for a specific cinematic experience, so part of that is missing without the visuals and the story. I’ve read the book and seen the movie, so I’m familiar with the general plot, but it still feels like there’s a piece of the puzzle missing when you can’t see and hear it all together. That being said, I don’t want to knock it too hard. The album stands mostly fine on its own, it’s super chill and cool and atmospheric. Still a very pleasant listen!
Really nice ambiental music.
War teilweise ganz cool, hat mich aber nicht komplett gecatched
This definitely is the current title holder of most random record I've gotten. It was a fine album for what it is but not sure why you must hear this before you die.
This undeniably had its moments of brilliance but without proper context I feel it's not something I'll return to often. Even then, AIR's band of Spacey Ambient Pop is nice, but not my favourite thing in the world. Still, a good album.
3.5
Nice ambient music.
You knew very well Whaaatttttt What’s coming next
More interesting than most movie scores. This movie is also depressing as hell. These guys are French. That's all you need to know.
Ah, movie music, there’s something special about it. And this one is pretty good! It’s easy and smooth, yet still has some catchy hooks to hold onto. That said, the album feels quite unbalanced, but that’s to be expected from a soundtrack.
Pleasant and pretty. I've never been huge fan of soundtracks, but this was a nice one.
Not great didn't hate it. a little more enjoyable then the first album, but won't be listening again any time soon
I really enjoyed the opening song, "Playground Love," but I do have to admit that the problem with movie soundtrack albums is that the music loses some of its meaning without the film playing alongside it. The music is good; it is just that it is out of context now, leaving the listener with only one half of the story if they have never watched the film. I have never watched or even heard of The Virgin Suicides, so I listened to this music without knowing what the music was about, really. I still enjoyed the soundtrack, but I probably would have enjoyed it more if I watched the film beforehand.
Good album.
This had really good moments, but it was inconsistent. Liked Songs added: Playground Love Dirty Trip
It's OK... Not sure why 8ts included on this list though
Playground love is a great tune, with a sax riff that is second to none. A lot of this album is (naturally for a soundtrack) incidental, but it is very good incidental music. Air’s Moon Safari is a stone cold classic and this album is not that. But it does contain some great atmospheric grooves and opens and closes with two stand out and affecting tracks.
3.4 stars rounded down. “Dead bodies” is the top track. Pastel goth, but yet also chill out, electronica. Consistent tricky tone maintained throughout.
It was fine, I wonder if it would grow on me if I saw the movie.
3.5
I think this album would have been better had I actually seen the movie The Virgin Suicides. I think it was good, but I'm sure the extra context makes it even better. Best Songs: Playground Love, Dead Bodies Worst Songs: The Word Hurricane
I really like Air and their sound, but I have a feeling this album is a lot more engaging if you have actually seen the film - and last I checked this isn’t “1001 albums and their accompanying movie”. As a stand alone album it’s really not bad though. But I get a feeling that an element is missing from the equation.
The first and only time I heard Air was their soundtrack for A Trip to the Moon. Pretty good and kind of weird. It fit the film. This album probably sets a great mood for The Virgin Suicides as well, though I haven't seen it. I probably won't see it, nor will I probably listen to this again, but it wasn't bad either. Best track: Dead Bodies
Decent. Generally not a big fan of soundtrack albums but theres a lot of good tracks here. Some are just background music though.
La primera canción es famosísima y genial. El resto del disco está padre, chill y sabrosón. Hizo que me dieran ganas de ver la película.
This score feels how the last week and a half has felt. Depressing, numb, kinda weird.
The music is fine but it doesn't really work as a stand alone listening experience, with it obviously being a movie soundtrack
3.5, atmospheric AF but I wouldn’t listen to it again.
Does Lisbon refer to the city or a family? Are the Lisbon Girls from Lisbon, POrtUgal, or the Lisbon family. Who knows. Great listen. High 3* (73/100)
As a soundtrack, The Virgin Suicides fits the mood of the movie perfectly; it's dreamy, melancholic, and atmospheric. But seeking it out as a standalone listen feels like a stretch. I vaguely remember the movie, and since it didn’t leave a deep impression on me, neither does the music. Good in context, but not essential on its own.
Instrumentals, talking, singing and samples. This is an album that moves you forward with it but not in a hurried pace. It’s dark without saying it’s supposed to be. I’m not quite sure where you would play this album. The bass is there but it’s not road trip worthy, it’s a little too down sounding to play at a party. Maybe if you were painting your house? All in all, it’s a decent album for those that don’t want to sing along to something. Choice cut: Dirty Trip
Weird.
It’s hard to appreciate film scores when you’ve never seen the film and you barely know the artist. It sounded fine idk
DID NOT UNDERSTAND just a psycodelic songs
this one is also tough because i haven't seen The Virgin Suicides, and i generally don't listen to movie scores by themselves except in very rare exceptions, and certainly not without seeing the movie first. also, i don't listen to a lot of electronic music so i don't have a lot of intelligent things to say about the music itself lol. with that said though, there were some cool tracks and i like the vibe of this kind of electronic music more than what i heard on Phaedra. the final track was really the only one that caught my attention- it was absolutely chilling- and i assume kind of encapsulates the story of the film? i am more motivated to see the film after listening to this though, because i assume the film uses the score in a very smart way if it was so critically acclaimed
Pretty chill. I dig
Ambitious prog rock, soundtrack-esqe. They lay down some solid beats, but can still feel vanilla. Very good drum work, a little too much 80s flair.
It's fine I guess
I'm not sure what to say about this. I've never seen the movie, so I can only go off of what I heard. It was interesting as a whole and the final song was pretty sobering. 3/5
So soundtracks are allowed? Hmm. 3.4.
Despite my enjoyment of the Moon Safari album, which I recently listened to, I couldn't get very excited about this offering. Sure, it's OK as movie scores go, but not something I'd want to listen to on a frequent basis.
Pleasant surprise. Some pretty interesting sounds that reminded me of MGMT's instrumentals in places. 6.5/10 (3.25/5)
very nice album! makes me wanna watch the movie
Back to back soundtracks for me, sort of. If you count Barry Adamson. Anyway, this is cool and the early Air sound was great, very dreamy. I quite liked Bathroom Girl and Dirty Trip. Empty House as well. I would give this another spin, although it's questionable if it needed to be on the list.
it’s a nice vibe but in the Age of Spotify am i going to listen to it enough to make it a favourite? probably not
This is a great soundtrack. It's hard for to separate the music from the movie and think of it just as an album the same way I would listen to Phaedra or am orchestral jazz album. I'm also having a difficult time thinking of a time I would listen to this in my leisure time or recommending it to someone. I would be more inclined to suggest Moon Safari or Talkie Walkie before this.
3.5/5
started listening to AIR in 2000, saw this film back in the day - and only found out that they did the soundtrack yesterday LOL .. great ambient sound they're also consistent bc subsequent albums - always better than the last
There are a lot of ways to start of an album - and in this case movie. And you have to tip your hat when the tone is set so perfectly. A great ride from the first notes. There will be Moog. It gets a little too soundtracky as things proceed - ie- simple themes repeat and it doesn't quite stand on it own. Definitely and album of its time.
Mellow album but in the end its a one and done.
This was good. Unlike the other electronically album i had the day before, this actually had beats an music and provided a nice background soundtrack to my day as I listened.
Soundtrack albums are tough to judge without the full context of the scenes that accompany the music. As a standalone album this was ok.
Track 4, I’m going to listen to Dear Prudence instead
Not a patch on Moon Safari
man...that was depressing as all get out.
Glad I was in a good mood when I listened to this - and not near an open window. Man it is dark.
Atmospheric album, I think I prefer this album than the movie that it came from, which is always a good signal on my book.
3.5
Interesting. I'm surprised there is a soundtrack on this list, but it was good. Maybe I'll check out the movie.
I haven't seen the movie so I don't have that experience to propel me through the score. Going just on what I hear here, Air crafts a soundscape of sacred unease, where ethereal synth passages intertwine with gothic organ movements to create something both beautiful and disquieting. While the atmosphere is undeniable, some passages meander or just kind of end, which makes sense for a score, but makes the album itself a less engaging listening experience.
Never seen the movie but enjoyed the feel of the tracks. Opening track is a cracker. 3.5 stars
Actually quite enjoyed this. Never watched the film, and not sure I’d go back as a whole but listening to it in the background was pleasant enough. Suppose that’s what you want from a soundtrack! I am not sure this was critical to the list, but a enjoyable listen nonetheless
This is sorta sweet. Ambient enough to entertain me, and not techno buzzy. I wouldn't change the station if I heard it on the radio. 3 stars
Not sure how I felt about that one. It was okay but very 'background' type music. I should go watch the film now
Very pleasant listen. Never seen the film, but the ost gives me some interest.
Only for Halloween
While it’s not Air’s best it’s a mesmerising soundtrack to a very depressing film . 3.5
We have a another movie soundtrack and this time, one that actually exists with Virgin Suicides. I have never actually seen this movie (mostly because I'm not really into watching movies, video games and obviously music have been my preferred media) but from reading the films plot synopsis and listening to this score, It seems to fit this kind of film really well and it sounds pretty good to boot. In fact, i like this one more than the last Air album i looked at since this one just sounds far more interesting and is just more memorable. Some of the songs are just kinda background noise but i can understand that mostly since this was made to be listened to alongside a movie. This album is pretty good for what it is. Best Song: Empty House Worst Song: Dark Messages
- While I get that Air purposefully developed this to be its own beast, rather than acting as a traditional film score, this feels like an odd inclusion. - Very difficult for me to separate this from the movie, a film that I do not particularly enjoy and find to be meandering and listless. This album does reflect that to some degree. - Totally seems like this should be my vibe, but while I enjoy its synth tones, I found it to be lacking a propulsion that is necessary for me to want to revisit it.
Dark but good.
Floaty
Love Air, this album is a good ambient listen but leans too heavily on the ambience to be terribly memorable.
Movie scores usually work best in context with the scenes they were written for. The titles generally give a hint, but if you're not familiar with the movie (as it is for me in this case), this also doesn't help. That said, the ethereal, atmospheric electronic music of Air is quite entertaining, well arranged and produced.
Nice chill background music.
Rock progresivo. Ni fu ni fa.
I loved this movie. The soundtrack, though good, does not meet that same level.
Nice mix of sounds. Will need to watch the film now.
Dreamy and intermittently interesting but lacks context and even with the heavy-handed VO, lacks context to make this anything like a first-rate offering.
Mildly entertaining as a soundtrack. Cool sounds. I'm sure it's much better with the actual film, which I hope to check out soon.
Although I may have yet to see The Virgin Suicides, the soundtrack conjured up by Air is a speedy succession of images propped up with mood and intrigue. The only way to fully immerse oneself to the album as a whole is if the film is playing (preferably in a theater near you). Favorites: Playground Love, Bathroom Girl, Cemetery Party, The Word Hurricane, Dirty Trip, Highschool Lover, Dead Bodies, Suicide Underground.
No lo conocía. Me pareció original pero un poco monótono. Me dio ganas de ver la película.
like the electronic vibes on this soundtrack. May have to check out the movie sometime.
dead bodie
I mean, I own and like this album, but am pretty surprised to find it on here as an essential-listen-before-you-die kinda thing.
Air's score complements this film so well, but it loses some of its ethereal magic as a standalone listen.
i like air (the natural resource) and Air (the band)
Another cool psychedelic album. I don't even remember half of these songs in the movie, though.
3/5. I do enjoy a good Score to a movie, and this was a positive listen. I could feel the subtle darkness through some of the upbeat electronic drones. There is a nice theme through each song that reminds you are listening to a collective linear album. Now I'm interested in the movie. Not perfect of course but an enjoyable listen. Best Song: Playground Love, Highschool Lover, Ghost Song
Glum, dour, vaguely ominous. I liked listening through, didn't know it was a soundtrack to a movie until afterward. Suicide Underground was a sad story to end on, and totally changed the feel of the album for me. The story seemed a bit implausible, but got the feeling across. Perhaps the movie tells a fuller tale here. A 3.5 I think, as the music was quite suited for the background, was a good groove but that's most of it.
I was listening to this and was reminded of Moon Safari and then I looked this album up and turns out it's by the same people. That album was pretty good in hindsight. Cool soundtrack plus the album cover is cool too. Still kind of quiet at points. Will have to watch the movie at some point.
6/10 - I enjoyed most of it but the last song explained how the movie went and it was pretty gory and made me sad. I know that its telling a sad story but still...
I loved it except for the spoken parts. 3
Pretty good, each song is a good listen, and together form a great soundtrack. Less songs, and more emotions, but good nonetheless. Unusual addition to the 1001 albums.
Air is good. This is fine
Good background music, which I guess tends to be the point for a soundtrack. Well that, and to elevate scenes by cresting tension, adding to drama, or by creating a feel of absolute pure cinematic drama like with LotR. I feel like Virgin Suicides is good as a soundtrack, but as something to listen to by itself, is just alright.
I had high expectations after Moon Safari, which is among my top 3 on the list of my favorite discoveries of this challenge. 'The Virgin Suicides' is a soundtrack album and thus it works completely differently than an usual studio album. I liked the overall atmosphere of it, but still it doesn't play that well as a whole, especially the songs that have no lyrics. I haven't watched the film, yet, so probably it works very well for the film, but alone as an album it doesn't stand out that much. 3.5 out of 5.
I thoroughly enjoyed Air's debut album, Moon Safari, for its beautiful atmosphere. This isn't much different. Unfortunately, this sounds like a film score in that it's somewhat aimless. I still appreciate a lot of what Air manages to do in this album, even if it isn't executed as well as Moon Safari.
Being a soundtrack, it does have an odd pace to it as an album, but it has definitely sparked my interest in the artist. I liked the atmosphere it gave, but I think being a soundtrack weakens it as an album.
You can really tell it is music for a movie. I was missing sonething in every song. 3/5
The Virgin Suicides is a soundtrack from the French electronic producers Air. The soundtrack met with commercial and critical success, much related to the success of the film. The music uses acoustic instruments with sustained synthesizer effects to create atmospheric pieces. The album is inconsistent, with some rather boring tracks, like "Dark Messages," and "Empty House." It is also burdened by "spoken word" elements from the film. I have not seen the film, and with that admittedly limited perspective, the pieces are odd elements for the soundtrack.
Very surprised by this album, I bet it's better than the movie. Very mellow in parts and introspective when I wasn't expecting.
Nhé, mais ou menos
Unsettling, melancholy vibes. Never seen the film. I enjoyed it alright
Nice melancholy. Decent to have on in the background while working.
Never seen the movie, fine ambient background music
6.5/10 I’m a fan of Air, so slightly surprised to see this make the list as it is probably their 4th best album. Still good though This is Air in their prog rock era, so sounds great Good vibes, guitar and drums in particular are excellent Pink Floyd feel at times Best: Suicide Underground
Started badly but ended well. Dead Bodies is a great tune.
This lounge was so soft I ended up with a sore back.
Some beautiful tunes and I do love Air but maybe a bit repetitive and too soundtracky
More ambient than the popier Moon Safari, this soundtrack reminds me of Pink Floyd style spacey pscychadelia updated for the EDM era (no surprise since PF did a few scores/soundtracks before DSotM). Washy synths, trancey chord vamps, groovy basslines, trippy effects, a combination of tight drum machine patterns and more free live drummer fills, instrumental apart from random samples with clips from news. Good working music: interesting enough but unobstrusive. Builds some light tension, quickens the pulse, but then a slow release...
Really great but I think needs the film, which I haven’t seen. I’m sure it’s a brilliant soundtrack, and would be a better album if I’d seen it. Solid work as always from Air.
I enjoyed this, though I've never seen the movie. Gives chill and mysterious vibes.
3.5
These two guys are scary looking lol. Playground love was legit, never heard it before. Trippy fucking ending. Overall weird album but not a terrible to get through. 3 stars
Meh. Some trip hop, some ambient electronica. Some cool sounds in various songs (liked the start to Clouds Up) that didn't always continue through the whole song. Playground Love was alright I guess. Ghost Song was okay at times and annoying at times. Dead Bodies was my favorite (jangly piano). Suicide Underground had interesting lyrics but the voice modulation made the delivery a bit hard to listen to. I guess the album is fine, and maybe fine for a soundtrack, but I'm not coming back to it.
Hmm well that was weird...
Honestly kinda dig this. Threw it on my dad’s speakers on a Saturday morning as I was putzing around the house and grabbing my morning coffee. It was some good background music. Not sure I would rate this much higher than a three, but overall it was enjoyable. Highschool Lover and Afternoon Sister sound sooo familiar, and I can’t place what they were sampled from, or what they’ve been sampled for, but I feel like I definitely recognize those melody structures.
Okay...but 1001 worthy?
This was a welcome relief after a 2-day beer festival hangover. I haven't seen this movie! Chill, down tempo soundscapes. Not sure I'd ever listen to it again.
literally me
I'm hoping Moon Safari and/or 1000 Hz are on this list, otherwise I'm not sure why they included this one... It's fine, but I don't think it's a must-listen.
Was like a Dirty Trip in an Empty House.
A unique pick. I have heard of the band but this is a movie soundtrack to a film I've never seen. Entertaining, mostly instrumental, obviously, and pretty moody and diverse. Wouldn't listen again though.
I think I'm missing a lot having never seen the movie. My bad!
Lovely
Aika tämmöstä lillukkamusiikkia, ei mun makuun. Ilmeisesti tää on jonkun leffan soundtrack niin se selittää. Taustalle tää sopii, tuo tunnelmaa. Pitäskö kattoo tää elokuva?
Never saw the movie. Soundtrack is pretty decent background music.
Obscure, perplexing. But why??
Interesting soundtrack, some cool stuff
This is OK- nothing bad, nothing memorable. It's a score not a soundtrack, sonisnperhaps a bit kore symphonic than may be expected, but it's nice enough. I'm not going to seek it out again, though.
This album is only a little pretentious.
Coolish and vibesy, and certainly Air made an impression upon their debut, but this is also light, slight and, like a lot of OSTs, lacks context (a particular problem ~ 20 years out), which makes it all seem too free-floating to have an impact.
decent music but i dont care to listen to an instrumental movie soundtrack from a band ive never heard of. i loved playground love though. high 6/10
It’s easy listening, but what’s the point without the movie
Nice sounding album would like to hear it again and see if it’s better than what I thought so based on my initial read, it’s a three
kinda weird listening to a movie soundtrack without having seen the movie but the vibes were good 👍
Þetta er fínasta ljúfmetispopp sem ég hef ekkert á móti því að hlusta á en ég mun líklegast ekki setja þá á fóninn af því að ég mun ekki muna eftir þeim (þótt þeir séu nú nokkuð þekktir). Samt ekkert út á plötuna að sakast, bara ekki það sem ég fíla nógu mikið til að setja ekki eitthvað annað á í staðinn.
It was honestly a shock to see this on the list, but it was great background music. Probably won’t listen to the album again but I will probably watch the movie at some point.
I was not expecting to see a movie soundtrack on this list. It's a beautiful soundtrack, but without the context of the movie it all feels out of place. My guess is that the author of 1001 really liked this movie and the soundtrack brings back those feelings.
When it's good, it's really dreamy and atmospheric. It's also a lot of slightly out-of-context soundtrack music so at times you don't really know what to make of it. Air are fantastic and do what they do better than anyone else. But this one feels a bit odd outside of the film it was created for. Some great moments though.
My least favorite Air album. It is a soundtrack and feels like it- by which I mean, background noise. Le Voyage Dans La Lune, 10000 HZ Legend, and Moon Safari are all better albums by the same band.
Having never seen the movie, I assume that plays into my lack of interest in this album. I knew the first song but after that, it was atmospheric background music. Not bad, just not memorable other than the last track which made me appreciate the entire album a little bit more.
This is a really interesting choice. I do think some soundtracks are so influential that they should be on here, but, having not seen the movie I can't say for sure. I will say that the first song is trending on tiktok so that must count for something.
Pink Floydesque. Chill stuff. Kinda weird. I’ve come across Air before. Interesting band
This is my second Air album to review. I've never listened to this album before, nor I have seen The Virgin Suicides, but I loved Moon Safari (I have no idea why I gave it four stars instead of five), so I'm excited to kick back and listen to this album. I thought this album was good, but I feel like that without being familiar with the movie, it was just a nice album to listen to. Air's arrangements are really nice, and I enjoyed that this score was meant to convey a wide variety of emotions, but I wish I had more context in listening to it. I think it's an odd choice to put a film score on this list, considering that having seen the movie or not seems to influence a lot of the reviews. I love the score to Requiem for a Dream, but without having seen the movie, it just wouldn't resonate with me. I've only seen the movie once, but that's all it takes for me to forever have a visceral reaction any time I hear "Summer Overture." I'm going to watch The Virgin Suicides this weekend, and I'm sure it will change my feelings towards this album.
Never saw this film (but definitely seems worth it since it's Sofia Coppola) but interesting/the first film soundtrack / score to be featured on this list for me which is interesting. I first heard high school lover at a 1975 concert preshow which was quite beautiful. It's a good blend of mellow electronics, pretty pianos/electric sounding guitars. Very easy to listen to. I feel like there is some Bowie influence on aesthetic but soundwise just have a nice dreamy aesthetic. Definitely a cool vibe style album regardless of it's impact to the film.
I love this type of music. I think it’s hitting more because it’s raining today. They really did a good job of capturing the mood of the film with the instrumentation. I was fooled by the first track in thinking there would be lyrics. Although I love lyrics, it didn’t take away from the album like it usually does for me.
Mellow, kinda trippy vibe.
Didn't really enjoy as much as I thought as I like some of their other albums. Perhaps if I had seen the film? A really early 70's vibe, which is a great sound but the songs/tunes are too similar
Pink Floyd meets Alan Parsons and Jean Michele Jarre and they make a sleepy baby together
Neat
I have no idea what this film was about and I’ve never heard of Air until now. I suppose this would be good music for a mystery or a supernatural film, I just don’t get what puts it on this list
I prefer Moon Safari but this was a good listen.
Some songs reminded me of Pink Floyd, but for me lyrics are missing
It's a fine collection of music. Is it better than other soundtracks? It's ok. I'm a little lost as to why this particular album is on the list.
harmonic soft calming tunes. Like that! Good Album to relax. (3.5/5.0)
From one ambient instrumental album to another ambient (mostly) instrumental album. It's kind of weird that I got two in a row of that. Interesting. Anyway, this one's pretty alright. It's a film soundtrack, which I believe I've only gotten once before with Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack. I think Superfly was better, but that's irrelevant. This one does it's job well. The sound is nice. I can tell that it fits a story. I haven't seen the movie that this score is from, so I'm not 100% sure if it fits the story or not. There isn't much to say. It's some solid instrumentals. High 3/5.
I really liked how moody this was. The talking track was a little... Not so great.
It's all fine, but I never care to listen to it ever again. 3/5
Decent, although unremarkable, soundtrack.
Cool ambient music almost
Bit repetitive
A soundtrack?? Is one of the 1001 albums I MUST listen to before I die???? To be fair I really enjoyed it. Dark and weird and made me want to dance. It didn’t make me want to see the movie tho!! Too sad.
I'm a bit confused by this one I have no idea what to make of it really! It was interesting. Some of it a touch grating.
This was fine, bit weird and not very captivating
Now I need to go rewatch the movie.
Nice.
Nice album, blended into background at points, not sure I’d revisit.
It's a great film soundtrack, but as an album, divorced of the context of the film, it didn't really hold up.
Great ambient background tunes
Maybe I should have watched the movie to better enjoy the story and music. But still it's not that bad, it's pretty good music to have on in the background. There's a kind of mysterious vibe to it and there's some good drum / bass interplay. Standout tracks: Playground Love, Cemetary Party, Dirty Trip, Suicide Underground 7 out of 10
Strange to include a soundtrack album, and also a second Air album when Moon Safari is basically sufficient. I didn't see the film, but ok, if we're having soundtracks then where's (checks index for confirmation, yep) Morricone? Vangelis? (Let alone Bladerunner, they didn't even include his work with Aphrodite's Child, a legitimate omission) Hermann's Taxi Driver score? Countless others. You could fill a book of 1001 soundtracks to hear before you die. Although I do very much like Playground Love and Bathroom Girl here, and the rest is good Air ambience, I never come back to this as a piece however.
Not bad. I like 👍
I enjoyed it up to track 9, then it started to give me anxiety.
As an album, a 3. As a movie soundtrack, probably a 4.5. Dug the mood and atmosphere for sure here.
No he visto la peli, pero el álbum está bastante bien. Bastante chill y no tiene ningún tema que sea especialmente cansino.
cool but probably more resonant if you actually hear it in its original context ( with the film)
Seen the film several times and never realized that the entire soundtrack was one band. This is lovely. Soft, atmospheric, interesting. Very nice. Not the band’s best work, but this is a successful project, that fits the film. This would be particularly good for traveling and tripping.
Hyvä!
For some reason I quite liked this film. The soundtrack compliments it
Absolutely incredible during the movie, a bit strange to listen to on its own. 3/5
Sorry, getting a bit behind. But not as far behind as I'll be by the end of April. Catching up today. Musically I liked it. The film is obviously something of a horror story, not the sort of thing I'd watch. Judging by the commentary on the final track. But I'd certainly buy some of their stuff if I see it on one of the stalls at a festival. A solid 3
There are some really beautiful arrangements on this (Playground Love and Dead Bodies for instance). The album seems to lack something because it’s a soundtrack and therefore feels a little disjointed by the really short interlude tracks. However, listening to this was really interesting and has definitely motivated me to dig out some other Air albums and give them a go. And that haunting final track has made me want to look out the movie too. Having now heard the soundtrack it might give an extra edge to what feels like a decent (and potentially harrowing) watch.
1/3/24. Would like to listen to more of this band, good ambience and instrumentals. Especially good for focus.
It's fine for a semi-ambient soundtrack but imo a dumb movie plot. Maybe I'll have a different opinion on both fronts if I ever watch the movie. 6/10
Nur als Cill-Musik geeignet
3.4 - Thought I'd enjoy this more, but maybe it was my mood. Moon safari is just better imo
It was nice and floaty with occasional bursts of tune to engage the ears. But I found them too far apart to hold my attention and this drifted by without leaving much of an impression. Much preferred Moon Safari.
own
Elektronika bis progressive Rock. Passabel.
