Reviews (page 7 of 12)

Such a vital energy in these songs. At times I get a little bored, but there's no denying Sly's influence. Sometimes I feel that they paved the way for things that wouldn't have been possible without them, but that I like a lot more than them. I appreciate the social commentary in the songs. I appreciate the songs more than I enjoy them, if that makes sense.

Full of anthems. Practically a greatest hits, except "Sex Machine" does seem a bit like filler (though it might be a fun jam when live). Wish they would've swapped it out for "Soul Clappin II" and "My Brain" which ended up as bonus tracks on the reissue.

very fun and cool

Excellent, fuzzy, exciting.

There's some bangers on here, alright, and it's been sampled a bunch too. Funky stuff! Fave track - "Stand!", "I Want to Take You Higher", and "Everyday People" are all stonkers!

It's funky, it grooves, it rocks, and the drugs weren't quite a problem just yet. Well, maybe they were on the 13-minute instrumental jam...

Best Song: Everyday People. A lot of great songs on here, but the iconic vocal delivery edges this one out above the rest. Worst Song: Sex Machine. Not to say that this prog-y groove is bad, but especially after "Everyday People" it feels somewhat out of place and kills the energy of the previous song. Overall: Great, groovy music with a political message. That second song is a heavy hitter. Definitely will be returning to this.

Yeah buddy

So happy and uplifting, really liked Sex Machine. What a great instrumental!

Has Everyday People on it so cannot give it less than a 4. Also better than There's A Riot Going On.

Good solid Funk-N-Roll that set the standard for those that followed. Obviously, Stand! and Everyday People standout, but Track 2 and the near-fourteen minute Sex Machine are phenomenal songs. 4/5.

A new album to me, never really listened to this band before save for a hit or two on the radio. Funky but with a spiky edge. I was surprised at how early this album was released - in my head Sly and the Family Stone were making music in the late 70s.

Favorite Songs: Stand! and Somebody's Watching You

funky :) My favourite songs are I Want to Take You Higher, Everyday People and Sex Machine (best song on this album tbh, 13 minutes and it doesn't feel too long at all)

Järkäleiden äärellä! Ihan mahtavaa soul-tykitystä

Love Sly and the Family Stone. They were my introduction to funk music so hold a special place in my heart. While this album isn't as strong as There's A Riot Going On, it actually has more hits. Its a great album that should be a part of any library that includes American funk as part of it. 4.5 🌟

This is just joyous. Stand, Don't Call Me N***** Whitey, Everyday People are all top classics, and nothing on the album lets you be bored. Tight, funky, thoughtful. So good.

Excellent, 4.2/5

Seems pretty ground breaking, loved the energy.

Don't call me N***er, Whitey made me think of Alphonzo Rawls H-Street part way back in '89. https://youtu.be/LyOeNcN_xwA?si=vIUlk7UPoWjM4r7c&t=2372 The familiar nature brings back some good memories. I spent money on this CD (new) when I was in college... that's right, I wanted to listen to this music more than I wanted to drink beers and get laid. Today, my life objectives have changed. "It's beer-thirty somewhere." P.S. Not sure why Weezer samples the beginning of Stand! in it's Beverly Hills song.

A bit uneven with a rocky start, but that's forgivable; they were pioneering and perfecting a genre. A stone cold classic. Best track: Everyday People

I have liked and loved them for a long time but have listened much more to 1973’s Fresh and have never listened to this album as a whole. I find that it has two personalities, one of the Summer of Love, call and response, flower power style and the other that bends towards a funkier, meatier sound. To that effect, beyond the banger that is Everyday People, I loved most D.C.M.N.W. and would but Sex Machine on just about any time.

We need more funk in the world!

Really enjoyed this album. Very funkadelic. Some of the songs were a little long for my taste. Loved the soul in this album. Opening song was a great introduction to the feel and sound of this album. Overall a great album, and I added a lot of the songs to my playlist!

That was certainly a groovy listen, although I might need some drugs to stick with the longer songs in their entirety. Everyday People is such a classic.

Very funky- very listenable ! Everyday People and Stand! We’re my favourites!

I'm very much digging this album, how have I not heard anything from this group before? Nice and funky, some dope effects on instruments (especially for the time), and hella enjoyable vocals. I like me some long songs, but "Sex Machine" went on for a bit too long - but also, I get it, jams can be fun. Just a bit much and felt sort of out of place among the rest of the tracks - almost felt like an "intermission".

It started a bit silly with those noises one makes when being in front of a synthesizer but then came the great stuff. Good album

Avausraidan breakdown tuo hymyn huulille. Muutenkin oiva, elämää täynnä oleva saundi.

Fantastic and reminds you what music used to be like

Funky.

Really enjoyable listen, good vibes. 4.5

heard this one before thanks to this banger

Brought back memories

There's a midget standing tall (to quote a line from the title song, I'm not comfortable enough quoting anything from track two). The essential track is the ubiquitous classic "Everyday People", an earworm so perfect that if the album was nothing else by Sly Stone whittling, it'd still belong on the list. Great all around if not quite close to classic status, which happens after they storm through Woodstock.

Leuk en energiek!

Really enjoyed it.

Groovy

Sly and The Family Stone will always have my respect. High-energy, radical songs where everyone in the band their a-game to deliver a truly spectacular album. It's awesome. A ton of tight songs in the first half, and then the incredibly bluesy jam "Sex Machine" dominating the second half. It's too good.

Slow burn, verging on psychadelic. Love the (what I assume to be) wah wah voice throughout. In fact it does not psychadelic a lot at points - Exhibit A being 13 minutes of Sex Machine (the sax that breaks in at 11 minutes is straight up sexual)

Never heard of this band before, it reminds me of my friend Chas for some reason... Psychedelic, funky and upbeat - very good listen which surprised me! Looking forward to seeing if they have anything else to check out

love ❤️

Funky as all hell. Love the organ, the voices are great. Bass just all up in there. This probably blew minds in the day.

Love the funky guitar and the fuzz tones.

Too Many repeating songs but musically interesting, sometimes experimental and "i want to take you higher" is a banger, sex maschine aswell

You Can Make It If You Try también me gustó mucho. Stand! es tremenda también. Esas palmas y los coros. Puffff. Hermoso disco. 7/10 ludomatics

I mean... Año 69? Salida de cantar She loves you yeah yeah yeah 76 veces seguidas y entrando en cosas mucho mas experimentales y """profundas""" no en letras sino en capas. Lo voy a escuchar mas seguido.

Really fun and uptempo album with some classic songs. I'll be listening to it again.

This one does it for me. Had me clapping on a full plane.

Yup, a classic. Gots the horns, the org, the harmonica, the harmonies, Sly. Gots it all. Boom-Shaka-Laka-Laka. Too bad it isn’t higher audio quality.

Some bangers on here. Very funky, rockin and full of some awesome instrumentals. Wish it was longer!

Pretty funky album, inspired me to make a playlist for similar songs. I recognized "everyday people" but I can't remember from where.

Loved it, so grateful to have heard this album

This was great. The title track especially

Didn't know any of the songs beforehand but will buy this on vinyl. Tight as fuck. I know it's not on the actual original album but the funk guitar on My Brain (zig zag) is superb.

Cracking album

Really enjoyed this - a few absolute killer tracks and nothing here not to enjoy

The first  song surprised me since the  sound wasn't the sound I associated with them.  I think of them a soul / funk but I guess if you were releasing an album in 1969 it needed an obligatory psychedelic song I like the jamming on Sex Machine. It sure sounds like a talk box on that tune as well as earlier on the album.  I tried to research it and googled "Sex Machine". I wouldn't necessarily recommend searching that term. No judgment. You may want to be sure nobody is looking over your shoulder before doing this particular google search. --

Very good, will Certainly listen again

Excellent. Brilliant pop songs and fantastic long, deeper funk tracks.

Funky!

The 1960s optimism in the lyrics has not aged terribly well, which is why I liked the long noodly one the best. I really like the incorporation of psychedelic stuff into soul and funk. Would be 3.5 from me

So funky! My parents had a few of these songs on the family iPod when I was little so the nostalgia probably contributed. I think Everyday People and Sex Machine were my favorites

Very fun! Gave off both a hippy vibe and socially aware movement vibe. Nice n funky :)

Great stuff this. The birth of Funk right here, mixed in with some Psych-rock guitars and bold baselines. Will be exploring more. 4/5

Really upbeat, somewhat one note but good.

Quite the combination of funk & rock. It's very much a sixties sound while still being very different than other bands in the sixties. The "hits" are classics and I love the title track which I may have heard once in my life in the seventies. I would have given this a higher mark if not for the needlessly long and repetitive Sex Machine.

Now here we go! Starting off with a song that is the title of the album is bold. Making that song only three minutes is just right. But I do see a 13-minute Sex Machine coming so I am sure Freddie Mercury would approve of that length. Very upbeat so far, I have not listened to this album before but a few of the songs. The second track was longer but felt very short and that may have been them repeating the chorus quite a bit but it was still a strong message. I Want to Take You Higher is a total classic, I’m trying to remember what movie I heard it in, but I’m sure it was football or sports related. It’s interesting that this album is seven years older than the prior two but it feels better produced. The sound quality is better and the vocals are much clearer. Enjoyed Everyday People and the undertones of a lot of these songs commentating on what was going on in the country around this time. I’m not sure off the top of my head if this was the first Sex Machine or if James Brown was first but like I said earlier, 13 minutes is very bold for a song. Seven minutes in and not a single word but this grove is funky. I’m starting to understand the meaning behind the song title. The way it ends with the drums feels like a rock song so this is a highlight of the album for me. Great ending on You Can Make It If You Try, a great message to all. My favorite album so far that’s been reviewed!

Iconic psychedelic funk album. All killah no fillah

Funky. Soul.

Mon hit: I want to take you higher.

Fun record. Some iconic songs on here.

Very funky

Good background music when I am working around the house. It's amazing that Forty years after this album was made some of the songs are still relevant.

Pretty great. Classic funk with a message.

Som Black forte e contagiante.

Nice Album to listen to. A familiar band but had not listened to a lot of music from them. I could work and listen to this album. Now Spotify is giving me similar music. I will continue listening to the suggestions of Spotify for today I think.

awesome

nice 60s funk/soul

Soul/rock/funk, catchy, politisk, smooth

The amount of pure musical information in old funky recordings never fails to impress. Some of the instrumentals end up feeling a bit noodly, but that's quite a small complaint.

I didn't know the work of sly and the family stone before picking up this suggestion. it got a nice groove but it did now blow me away, but I give it a lot of props from doing it back in 69.

Funktastic

Funky! Everyday People is a classic. The rest were fine. Some went on too long or were kind of repetitive. (3)

Not my favorite but it’s Sly!

Music that flies. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it is uplifting and soulful. There are plenty of moments where the band is in a nice groove.

Groovy!

Sly and the family stone seem like the Led Zeppelin of Funk. This is sick, I love the production, I love that it’s all over the place. Also brownie points for the Scooby doo references. My only issue is a lot of this is just too jammy and too long for what it is at this point in time. I feel like I would’ve enjoyed as a shorter record/shorter songs.

May have been my mood, but couldn’t really get into this whole album.

I like this although I don't have that much to say. Nice and groovy, some pretty tight musicianship Highlights: Sex Machine

Not really my kinda music, but if it was this would be it.

i didnt know afro 60s funk would be this fun and instrumental track 2 was smth but overall its nice if youre in the mood but i may get low stars if some people dont get it but i like the general vibe

fine but i don't think that i will listen to any song in this album again.

nice to read about their story, as a first mixed black/white/men/woman band

Riddled with familiar tracks. I enjoyed it. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit 🫳 ★★★☆☆(6/10) Total reviewed : 366 Already owned : 79 Purchased : 16 To buy : 7 Nope : 264

Got bored as it doesn’t really do much

Good fun funk album

Second song got me

Decent. Preferred the single mixes, Caus recording of rest of album, especially drums, sounds a bit off Lyrically a bit pants. Sing A Simple Song, Sex Machine and My Brain were v. Good. Think everyrhing else could do to be 20% more uber muscular in the funk department Enjoyed it though.

It was really fun but it's not going to go down as an all timer or anything

Such a nice funky album. Some qualms- did not particularly enjoy the echoing vocals in some of the songs, particularly sex machine, but the other tracks made up for this. Everyday people was my favourite, but sing a simple song and you can make it if you try were great too in my opinion!

Music that was needed back then. Right now not that much of repeat value for me. Still a good listen tho (2.5/5.0)

I'll take Songs I Cannot Sing Along To for 809, Alex

Pretty good in places- Everyday People, You Can Make it if You Try. Not everything works, but overall it’s worth listening to.

Some good fun times

An excellent vibe and a fun album. Some tracks drag (Sex Machine in particular), which makes the album a bit uneven overall, but still a great listen.

Textbook 70s soul album. I dunno why it just didn't gel with me.

Not too bad, however track 7 is very long and I don't like track 2.

This was a pretty good album! I enjoyed it quite a bit

Fun funk. The two super long songs kind of kill the fun vibe but still a good album.

Generally like funk but didn’t find this one all that memorable in its bland positivity

Pretty cool throughout, perhaps a bit too laidback in parts, so it didn’t massively grab me, but it was a good listen.

Not a big fan of funk and soul in general and while I didn't hate this one, it did nothing to win me around. When the song title 'Sex Machine' popped up I very nearly eye-rolled but it turns out it's allowable because it's an instrumental, and in fact there is a great section from minutes 5-9ish with a the bluesy jam which is probably my highlight of the album

Pretty good. Kind of funky but also dated.

This was spacier and jammier, even jazzier, than I thought it would be. The funk is still the thread, of course, and the horns in particular really stand out.

Didnt live for it

good but not standout

A disappointingly mid funk album. 2.5 stars.

A few stellar singles, and some really odd songs too. I’d go 3.5 if I could.

A fun album, I don't think I will listen to it again tho 3/5

Very nice and funky record. It doesn't stand out as much to me as other similar records on this list, but it still is a blast to listen to. Only the 13 minute instrumental feels a bit too much for me, that could have been a bit shorter, the album feels draggy there. 3/5

Funky psych! Not sure I have a whole lot to say, pretty impressive for 1969- I'd say it holds up. I'd say it's maybe closer to a 3.5 but the fact that I probably won't be coming back to listen any time soon puts it at a lower score. Objectively this is maybe a 4.

One or 2 good songs but also quite a few songs that just got tedious.

Album was decent, it was enjoyable and I can see how in the 60s this would've had some bangers. Feels ahead of its time or groundbreaking for sure. No takeaways for me and nothing I'd listen to again, but I can appreciate it.

I acknowledge the cultural significance of this record and can hear its influence on other artists I love. I didn’t find it offensive to listen to, but I just wasn’t incredibly moved by the experience outside of a live setting. I’m glad that the deluxe album I was listening to had Singles versions of the tracks because I found those mixes a lot punchier.

Funky Jackson 5 -ike album sometimes, some songs are misses, but had a fun vibe overall. 1. Everyday People 2. Stand! 3. Somebody's Watching You

Great funky, soul rock listen

Very nice instrumental and guitar riffs! There are some really good tracks on the record, but overall it felt a bit repetitive.

Any Sly & The Family Stone album I have ever heard has a tendency to be uplifting if not joyous, even when there is an undercurrent of anger and this is another of those. That is something that ought to be recognised and applauded. But some of this album does go on a little - a bit like trying to hold a smile for a photo for too long. So very good, but not great in my world.

#19 An important album that was influential to so much music that came after it. I generally am not a huge funk fan, so this didn't do too much for me, but this is good for what it is. Everyday People is a classic.

Standouts I Want to Take You Higher Everyday People

Sounds like a mixture of James Brown and EWAF lol. Good funky vibes. Sex Machine was long AF and could've been shortened a little bit but otherwise a pretty solid album. Fave Songs: I want to take you higher, Everyday People 3/5 (upper end of 3)

I mean prob better ngl but did not listen to it

Ya not bad honestly. Some songs were weird but some were pretty listenable.

Highly recommend watching Jane's Addiction and Ice-T covering the song [REDACTED] from this album

The best song was Everyday People but honestly, it's just a solid funk robin even if I won't ever listen to it again.

The title track of this album was a great way to go into it! It was so much fun, so soulful. Don’t call me… was one of the funniest things I’ve listened to in a while. I don’t think it was meant to be but there was just something about it. It has some very great guitar at the end though. I want to take you higher had a great groove to it! I thought it was fantastic. Somebody’s watching you was also quite good. I liked the horns. Sing a simple song was anything but simple, but it was good. Everyday song was alright. Sex machine, apart from being egregiously long, had some good music. You can make it if you try was a good track. Nice and laid back. Overall 3/5 ⭐️ 141/1089

Like it but wouldn't listen again

I like it. I had never heard of it. Best track: sex machine

Just alright for me. Leaning towards positive, especially for Everyday People, but overall it was fine.

Love this album, but more love the genre it is with.

Sex Machine is a jam and a half but the album as a whole doesn't really hit. It's fine. Thanks Drake's uncle for inventing slap bass, I really like that

Would I listen again: a couple of songs I really liked stand and I want to take you higher. It was nice overall, 2nd song was certainly something to listen to in the car

Nice enough funk and most tracks have a good message. I just couldn't see myself ever coming back to this though.

Fun and energetic, soul/funk with I feel like some disco style beats on some songs. I dont love it, but can understand why this was influential when it came out in the late 60s

Not bad, but not my fav.

Some of these songs are really good - might bump this up to a 4 later.

Buenos ritmos

I have to be in the mood for Sly and The Family Stone, but I do like this album. Been a while since I heard it though. Like “Riot…”, this is perfectly good for what it is. Sex Machine is the highlight for me. Solid 3.

Pretty good, sounds like they had fun Makin it.

enjoyed this sounds

Not bad, lots of classic sounding funk and some stuff I recognized (everyday people being one). Intro sounded super familiar too. Seems like it was very strong/influential for it's time.

Given the quality of the recent albums of the day I've gotta give Sly & The Family a 3. I might have given it a 2 but Stand!, I Want to Take You Higher, the drum solo on Sex Machine, Everyday People, ... there is enough goodness on this to rate a 3 even if the album as a whole isn't chock full of it.

fun but a bit forgettable

Interesting album. The second half of the album was objectively way better than the first half and there were a lot of repetitive songs but I would say about 50% of the time I enjoyed the music and the other half I did not.

Funky soul music of cultural significance. Were it not for the significance of this album and the time of its release, I don't think its music would rate as highly as it does. Aside from Everyday People, most of the album doesn't sound much better than other music from the genre and the singles didn't impress me much. The songs are good, but they aren't 'greatest of all time' good. Still, the instrumental arrangements were pretty darn funky (shout out to the instrumental tracks), and the vocals/backup vocals were all in balance and well executed.

i think maybe i just wasn't in the mood for this sound today. i don't hate it but it was hard to get through. i'll give it another chance some other time.

i’m totally fucked up so why don’t change it to “funked up” today… see, a change in only one letter can flip the meaning on its head! but it could be a little tiny bit more funky tbh. 3.5/5

Kinda reminds me of Barry Manilow. 3/5.

Good ol' Sly

chill but good pacing

Maybe sit! this one out. 6/10

Jamming and interesting though a 2026 lens

Just a solid all around album but nothing really stood out for me.

Pretty good! The title track was a real standout, brighter, poppier than other Sly records I've heard, has a very classic production style, thin and brash but not in a bad way. I was expecting a little more based on what I've heard before but the records fun and a great arvo play.

Oh yes!!! Yeah- I obviously had high hopes for this album. But, no. It really wasn’t that good. There was no reason for sex machine to be 13 minutes! No. And I ended up liking the second track the best. Oh well… it’s Sly and the Family so they still get a 3.

- funky and fun but i did not devote enough time to actively listening to it - rating: 3/5

Soul, Funk,1969->3

it's different from what i'm used to, that's for sure

This was good and may listen again, just short of 4

soul and funk, inspriational for many that followed in this genre

Very psychedelic soul and funk. This album was very good I’d rate it a 3/5, reminds me of the sinners sound track. Favorite song from the album: “somebody’s watching you”& “everyday people” Least favorite: sex machine. As much as I tried to like it, it went on for too long and it was very redundant

High 3

Decent stuff, didn't blow me away.

After the first song I was excited and then it quickly diminished. Nice funky, disco vibe. Some parts got too noisy and some really wack songs that went on too long. Drummer and brass were the stars for sure

Favorite Song: Sex Machine

this was alright some of the tracks were really fun but it wasn’t anything too special

Funky! And Groovy!

This was enjoyable.

Upeat and wide ranging

Kinda groovy.

No. 387/1001 Stand! 3/5 Don't Call Me N****, Whitney 3/5 I Want To Take You Higher 4/5 Somebody's Watching You 4/5 Sing A Simple Song 3/5 Everyday People 5/5 Sex Machine 2/5 (3x) You Can Make It If You Try 4/5 Average: 3,2 Alright to listen to. Not much more to say about this record.

I liked You can Make It If You Try, a couple were repetitive. Overall some fun and interesting music, but I probably wouldn’t listen to the whole thing again. Surprisingly, I liked some of the instrumentals the best!

Swung wildly in tone, good driving music.

I would probably keep this over at least one of the other albums they have on this list.

Nothing stuck out to me with this album. It was just good.

Interesting and funky

Everyday People is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Kind of a mixed bag. Generally liked it, but a couple songs just didn't do much for me.

Probably a piece of history, idk. I mostly enjoyed this but I'm just not a huge funk guy. Impressive for 1969.

Groovy and enjoyable. Feels great for a 60s album 6.4/10

Cool and pleasant, not my thing. 6/10

Combining Psychadelic and Soul is a lot of fun. This is pretty good. Sometimes the jam breaks go on for a little long, but this is fun Liked Songs: "Stand!" , "I Want to Take You Higher" , "Somebody's Watching You" , "Sing a Simple Song" , "You Can't Make It If You Try" , "Soul Clappin' II"

First listen

I liked two of the songs on this album, Stand! and Everyday People The rest were kind of a disappointment compared to the two I liked.

Bara venjulegt. Nöfnin á lögunum eru toppurinn.

not for me mostly but still pretty coole

Quite fun.

These songs are so familiar from pop culture. Everybody's heard Everyday People. The funk throughout the album is nice to hear and makes up for some really long, repetitive songs. The interplay between the voices is cool, and the lyrics reflect the themes of racism, unity and empowerment.

The guitar jams are epic funk but I enjoy the influence more than the actual thing

Not my type of funk

Enjoyed the long jam instrumental and Everyday People is an all time. Nothing else on the album really wowed me.

It's funkie, it's black, it's colorful, filled with unconventional melodies and instruments.

Very good record. 3,8

I liked this more than I did the other S+tFS album that has already popped up in my list (are there more?). But still not for me. Definitely a case where I understand the importance of an act and their music, but I still don’t vibe with it. 3/5

3.5 from me, liked the sound of this album but felt too long in places

The album was a fun vibe.

This was an interesting choice for the drive to work today. Although, I’m glad I held off playing it whilst dropping my daughter off at school, when Don’t Call Me N****r, Whitey came on. That would have led to all kinds of awkward questions. I am quite partial to some good 70’s funk and soul, and I’d like to say this album didn’t disappoint, but it didn’t quite hit the spot. It was good, but maybe because I was stuck going through roadworks at 40 miles an hour, I just wasn’t feeling it. Y’dig? Still, give it a solid 3 out of five, and let’s move on to tomorrow’s pick. Standout track - Everyday People

Not my regular cup of Joe, but this is a really fun collection of sounds and styles I'll be playing this surprise recommendation again

Thought it was enjoyable. I liked a lot of the songs but they often had extra elements that I didn't like as much. Would probably listen to some of the songs again but not the whole album. Fav song: Everyday People Least fav: Sex Machine

Why is there a 13 minute instrumental!!! And there's some really weird noises in it so it's not even fun to listen to. Thought the rest of the songs were great fun but that one was a chore. Favourite song: Stand! Least: Sex Machine

Stand - dancing at my desk. Funky outro. Sex Machine - sweet jam.

Maybe I’m not in a good mood today, I feel nothing.

I wanted to like this much more than I did, but it just didn't hold my attention

It was ok 5/10

gostei de you can make if you try it

you wait for ages for a soul/funk album, then 2 come at once !

Some classics but nothing too exciting overall

Not so bad, lots of instrumentals at the back half of the album

This was not a bad album, it was ok. Everyday People was familiar.

Fine. 3

First track is one of the funkiest things I've lately. A huge track. Absolutely incredible. Track 2, wich I prefer not to name lol, is funky and cool but a bit less exiting. Track 3 is as good as the first. Love the playing and arrangement, every moment revealed new sounds. Vocals massive. Somebody's watching You is such a beautiful ballad. Love the participation by all on Vocals, the rithem guitar and brass arrangement. Lovely Track. 5 super funky. Everyday People is such a hit. It captures the sound of the project in only 2.5 super enjoyable minutes. Sex Machine is a very long instrumental piece the I enjoyed quit a bit. It's not the most original thing I've ever heard, but for moments you do get lost in the improvisation. And it's dynamic enough to make it valuable all the way through. Back to a shorter banger to finish it up beautifully. Second listen, the highlights remain high but lower moments got a bit lower. So it's a high 3.8 (probably deserved a 4)

2/24 Not a bad soul/funk album. Heard some of these songs before in movies and tv shows.

Don't have this one, heard some. Not as good as the rest of the stuff I've heard from them, but still solid, groovy fun. 3.5 rounded down Heard before? Some Owned: No 48/213 (22%) Will I get: No

Love Sly, but my general sense is that a greatest hits comp will do the trick. That said, loved how the weirdness and longer jams are starting to materialize on this one!

Some decent tracks, but I didn’t really feel it. It can appreciate what it is

I like somebodies watching you. The rest I thought was mid

FINALLY CAUGHT UP WITH DAILY CHECKING AGAIN!! omg owa owa guitars. stank face is present and alive for this one great!!

Interesting album. Some good songs, some cheesy songs, some aggressive songs. Not quite sure what to make of it

If a jam band had nothing but a wah pedal and an insanely good bass player, this would be the outcome

3/5. Decent soul/funk album that's hurt by the band's proclivity to getting lost in the music and keeping a song (or part of a song) going on too long. The band is capable of putting out good music with good bones, and they're at their best when they keep it short. The best songs on the album are all south of 5m, and the hardest to get through are all lengthy. That isn't a shock, that's just the nature of music; the longer you stick around in the same progression/key/arrangement/whatever, the more you're in peril of losing your audience. But it's part of a good musician/producer to know when to cut and and when to keep on. This album lacks the latter. But you'll still enjoy good portions of this album if you like the genre.

I appreciated the listen and recognized the hit Everyday People. It was also interesting to read more about the significance of this album.

Yet another that came and went without leaving a big impression. It was fine, but doubt I will revisit

This was ok. Sex machine was great, but outside of that I found myself to be a bit bored.

I wanted to like this more because I adore Everyday People and other Sly songs, but ultimately Stand! and I Want to Take You Higher are the only other tracks on this album I'll revisit.

Groovy, but some songs feel like mindless jams with no meaningful development. 3.5

Groovy. Would have been better to leave out the parts where they were too drugged up to play tight though.

This was a very good vibes album. Some song names I’m expected to not say out loud though.

Funky!! Fun and good - a high 3

average album for me, nothing really stood out. Favorite track was the title track, Stand!

A stong funk and soul stew right here... i love the relativey quiter moments like Somebody's Watching you because the melodies are sharper. The rest is okay but doesnt hit me as hard.

I enjoyed it but overall thought it was just okay

I did not love this album. It reminded me a bit of the Grateful Dead and their extended songs. I can totally inagine this at Woodstock but it is not speaking to me. Rate 3 stars

Some good stuff on here. Not sure I want to check out the rest of the catalogue but I enjoyed it.

Some decent cuts

Good album, with some fun funk jams. Most of it isn't entirely my speed, and I feel cheated by being so burnt out on the chorus of Everyday People because of its commercial use.

Boundary pushing for the time I can definitely see why this album is significant Soulful and good grooves I liked There’s a Riot Goin On more 3.5 stars

Not half bad

Classic funk

Fairly enjoyable

fun listen reflective of late 60s to early 70s

This is funky, angry, and a bit weird. Track 2 is a hell of a title. I thought Sex Machine was starting to drag on a bit, when I looked it had only been going for 3 minutes, and was a 13 minute song. Overall a good listen.

not for me (doesnt have to be)

It's fine. perfectly whelming.

The funk and soul elements on this album are mmmmmmm so tasty, but it has absolute MISSES on the album too. Fascinating product from the 70’s it’s a cool album.

I love what this album stands for, and there are some really cool funk and soul elements. Just the rest of it is blah; the vocals get really tired after a while, and the psychedelic rock elements are just alright.

Funky! Not my usual style of music so was fun to listen to and change it up

Felt cultural important; however it was just alright for me.

I enjoyed their next album a decent bit more. It was fine, I’m surprised how often I get bored with funk music. Rating: 3.2

sadly, i did not love this one as much as there's a riot going on. There are some of their best tracks like everyday people and I want to take you higher but I think as an album it's less interesting. Not bad by any means was just hoping for another classic from these guys.

Really solid funky album! 3.5/5

Nothing about it stood out to me

This album grew on me the more I listened to it and recognized some of the tracks like “You can make it if you try” and “Everyday people.”

It is good but I did not connect. Thought it would be more soul.

So uhhhh.. What was up with that one song? Best Song: Everyday People Rating: 5.5/10 Stars: 3

This is a good funk album

When it funks it really funks but there is some filler here and there.

Veldig gode vibes. På andre lytt likte jeg de bedre. Chill

good variety of different sounds?

Love the hits, but I guess I just had to be there for the rest

good instrumentals but a bit annoyingly repetitive.

I enjoyed the instrumental parts on the album, nice variety and no rushing. Just sitting in the groove. Favourite track was the 13+ minute instrumental track "Sex Machine". I could have done without the doubling up of tracks that were single versions. Solid album, 3/5 stars, would potentially listen again.

A very enjoyable album but just didn't feel compelled to listen again. Good without being outStanding.

Craig: okay, not as good as I expected Courtney: good, some tracks stronger than others

A lot of fun, a little dated, and the 13-minute Sex Machine jam holds this back from being higher rated for me.
