Reviews (page 8 of 12)

Was expecting a bit more funk. Less political. Not bad, just not as expected, from my assumptions.

Really peak, but not my style

(fbi zajebało mlk jra w '68, to by się zgadzało.)

Nic szczególnego jak na dwa pierwsze utwory, ale dobrze się przy tym pracuje. Jasiek, to prawda, że Sex Machine cudowne. Zapomniałem, że w pracy jestem XD

cant lie didnt listen

R.I.P. Sly Stone. Favorite track: Everyday People

Some good songs and some I'm thinking holy shit we're still on the same song....

song 2 is something else

I expected more.

I think I was expecting a little more from this. The hits are cool, but it didn't really hold up as a strong album for me.

It's good it's good

Stand! - 5/10: I like the music/instruments/beat (whatever you call it). Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey - 3/10: I just didn't really like it. I Want to Take You Higher - 5/10: I like the vocals and saxophone. Somebody's Watching You - 7/10: I really like the vocals and the instruments/beat. Sing a Simple Song - 5/10: Just not my favorite. Everyday People - 5/10: I like the instruments/beat. Sex Machine - 5/10: I like the instruments/beat, but I'm not a huge fan of "instrumental" songs. You Can Make It If You Try - 4/10: Just not my favorite. Overall Score: 39/100 Overall Rating: 5/10: I liked a few songs, but it just isn't my favorite. I like the lead singer's voice on most of the tracks and the instruments/beats as well. I don't see myself listening to it again, though.

This one didn't really capture me. I gave it three stars cos I do like a lot of Sly's stuff and Everyday People is an actual classic!

OK, lots of the same sounds through out buy a 3

It was a nice album, the sound and melodies reminded me a lot of those 80s albums, it was very upbeat and I loved some songs that it offered, lots of genres shown in an album, never expected to like it a lot but I did.

A great combination of RnB, Funk and Soul.

groovy

3* = I value this and would like to hear some tracks again

Not exactly my vibe - psych/funk/soul with long instrumental breaks and very 60s melodies. I see why it might have been particularly important for it’s time given it’s social content, so historically I understand the inclusion of it but I didn’t find much that interested me musically or melodically.

Was fine for background, probably won't listen again

muy divertido

It was ok. Really nice background music while baking bread in the kitchen.

I realised I’ve always had Sly and KC mixed up. Such a good vibe, and not what I was expecting so pleasantly surprised. Their OG “everyday people” is superior to arrested development cover. Would listen again

By all means, I should love Sly but I just don’t. Every album has a few great tracks, surrounded by a lot of mediocrity, and this one is no exception. That said, I do agree it’s an album everyone should hear at least once.

Everyone knows James Brown is the Sex Machine. But this record has the funk. Just not my favorite.

Some fun funk songs. not sure if i'd listen again.

I liked this one better than the other Sly on the list but it's still not really my thing.

Wow I’m actually surprised I’ve never heard of this. Gives me punk Stevie wonder vibes lol. There were a few hits that took my breath away. Next time I want to study funk drums I’m going to come back to this album

Funky acid trip. Favourite Track(s): Everyday People, Sex Machine Least Favourite Track(s): I Want to Take You Higher

Great album, 60's sound. More like music history for me, but I really enjoyed the title track, Stand! Need to listen again to give it another chance

bit weird but i would listen

Groovy grimy funk.

Some great tunes but the long jammy ones drag a bit for me

I can hear funky echoes of this album running through many other politically conscious and pluralistic slabs of wax. The singles still have some punch, whereas the total album experience falls flat for me. I'm sure there's a joke about stand-out tracks to be made — and you can make it if you try, but it'll only work if it's for the everyday people.

No sure I'll go back and listen again

funky, easy listen. 3.5

This put me to sleep

I'm glad this pointed me in the direction of Sly and the Family Stone. I enjoy their funky sound, but I much more prefer the sound of the successors they influenced, rather than them specifically. I greatly appreciate the talent they held and the diversity they preached, but I think their sound might be a bit too dated for me.

3/5 + powerful performances, feels very alive and all Instruments sound great + No filler, great highlights - boring artwork - the old songwriting conventions makes this feel mucher longer - while i can appreciate tracks like Sex Machine from a craftmanship perspective, it's nothing i want to listen to again Fav: Stand!, Everyday People, Sing A Simple Song Least Fav: Sex Machine

I didn’t mind it but it didn’t really have any stand out tracks for me. It may grow over time but I’m not sure I can be bothered when there are so many other things to listen to…

On the whole, was a consistent funk album, but it really is lacking in some top notch songs to really sustain attention. Found it just dissolved into the background after a while which is unusual for a genre that tries to keep your head and body moving. Consistently average in the end.

I was not prepared for that rollercoaster of lyrics. Almost did a spit-take with my driving cereal.

Cool album. Leuk om af en toe te luisteren maar wordt geen standaard

Yeah, I dunno. I like these guys well enough when I hear them but would never think to put them on.

It has the one song everyone knows they did, but I really dug the full instrumental tracks.

This was pretty good

Was not expecting a hard R at 8:26 in the morning. Otherwise a pretty enjoyable album. Fave track: Everyday People

I Want To Take You Higher a clear standout. 2.5/3

Vibes: 3/5 Instruments: 4/5 Production: 4/5 Emotional Value: 1/5 Storytelling: 2/5 Album Cover: 0 Stand Outs: Sex Machine, Stand! Overall Rating: 2.8

I found this whole album easy to sing along too, especially track 2.

I had a fun time!!

Groovy, could've been wilder though. Once again, a pretty average album, not truly worthy of a 3, but clearly not a 2 either. I don't particularly like or dislike any song, oh except sex machine, what's going on there? Why is he getting waterboarded at some point? Was he about to drop the heaviest bars known to mankind and was just silenced? Thirteen minutes is an egregious length for a song like that, so that's the only one I can say I hate (with a passion, actually), like if some day I get paralyzed from waist down and that song starts playing, I swear to god I'm crawling across the room to stop it. P.S. As Cher and Future once said DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS AND SO ON AND SO ON AND SCOOBY DOOBY DO (don't come for my neck i had no idea that was a real song until now).

Some really good songs but not a fan overall - too much I wanted to skip.

It’s funky. It’s fresh. It’s probably historically significant in ways I’m not aware of. Good inclusion.

Jam band, jam sesh album. I definitely had some songs that I could not relate to, but that's not the point. They have just good vibes and are in it for the love of the game. I bet they sounded amazing live. Not sure of their cultural significance or relevance but this album slaps. 6/10

Feel good, catchy funk

oh well.

3.5 Soul, funk, psychedelia…all of which I appreciate in spades. But for some reason this didn’t stick out to me on my first listen. I like this genre in general so this will stay in my library and get more listens in the future, but the music just started to feel repetitive here.

Funkalicious.

Pretty good. Everyday People is my favorite from the album. But the funk starts to get a bit repetitive.

Нормально опять фанк какой-то

Couple bangers but couldn't really get into it otherwise.

Funky!

really choppy, my opinion of it changed with every song. im happy to remember the good ones though

I really liked a couple of songs but it was too unhinged for me overall

Sly is massively talented. Period. End of story. That said he was definitely going through it when he wrote and recorded this album. Standouts include “I want to take you higher” and “Everyday people”.

Felt like I was at Woodstock. Some good ones on here

Ok album, very mixed feelings about the tracks. Everyday People is a classic. I also really enjoyed Sex Machine, although it is way too long. You can Make It If You Try was also a favorite. Overall, 3

Denton’s own Sylvester Stewart b inning that funk.

Kind of fun and funky. A harsh three. Would need to listen to a few more times to get a better sense of it.

Really didn't enjoy this although I expected to. 2.5 rounded up on the strength of Everyday People and I Want to Take You Higher.

Groovy. Stand, sex machine, and I want to take you higher are sooo fun, the first half of the album didn't hit as hard for me

ωραιο αλλα δεν το ακουσα ολοκληρο

Influential… but doesn’t elevate much beyond the quintessential hits. “I Want To Take You Higher” still kicks ass, though.

ELE -Jackie Moon

Heard this band but never gave them a listen. Everyday People is a classic. I just wish the rest of the album was as good as that one.

Sly and The Family Stone were the group at the forefront of the soul, funk, rock movement of the 60's and the first successful racially integrated, mixed gender rock group and this racial unity was kind of the theme of their music. They were kind of the hippie movement personified (peace and love) and yes, they performed at Woodstock. Everyday People was their huge hit with the theme of "we're all people, together" and was an anti-prejudice anthem. This message was prevalent in their music. The song "Don't Call Me N-Word, Whitey" was interesting and made so much sense. There's really no lyrics besides two figures, one white, one black, telling each other not to call each other a racial slur. The rest is a talk guitar. Of course, the message being that as long as we keep calling each other slurs, there's not going to be any progress made in any kind of relationships. It's said that Sly Stone pretty much paved the way for funk/hip hop/R&B and black artists in general. I think that requires a bit more of a deep dive than i'm able to do right now. I'm always fuzzy on timelines and influences, but The Temptations were also very much around at this time and they were also doing their funk/psychedelic thing at this same time, so i'm not sure who is influencing who at this point. This genre did develop at the same time though.......and required a lot of drugs. Sly & the Family Stone had their own serious issues with drugs too as it was just rampant during this era. Overall, cool band, great messages, sad demise. Musically, i'm not a huge fan of this type of funk. Everyday People is a song everyone has probably heard, and they did have a huge influence on music in general, so that is to be respected.

It was okay. “Stand”, “Everyday People”, and “I Want To Take You Higher” are all awesome songs. Track 2 is disturbing but catchy. “Sex Machine” was a terrible instrumental.

Estos discos fusion me suelen cansar en seguida. La música es objetivamente buena, pero el disco entero, en este momento, se me hace demasiado estimulante a nivel auditivo y de disfrute. Canciones sueltas sí. Quizás en compañía o algo más en directo.

I've never listened to this album (41). Love the genre, not my favorite album.

Classic album, another album that I have previously listened to and enjoyed

Kinda cool

Classic

This is fine. Not really my thing. It's got some classic songs on it. I don't feel qualified to give it any lower or higher than a . . .

Fun party record

A groovy party record, packed with good vibes. I prefer the arrangements and general atmosphere than the compositions themselves. That said, Everyday People is an obvious single and has a life of its own beyond the LP.

Alright

Funk overload

A lot of fun!

Solid funk record, I don't find myself coming back to it much but it definitely does that sound pretty well

01) Stand! - 7,5 02) Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey - 6,5 03) I Want to Take You Higher - 7,5 04) Somebody's Watching You - 7,0 05) Sing a Simple Song - 7,5 06) Everyday People - 8,5 07) Sex Machine - 7,5 08) You Can Make It If You Try - 7,5 TOTAL: 7,44 (74/100) Current ranking: 307/697

Not really my kind of thing, but you can see how influential it was. Happy to have had the excuse to listen to it!

This was fine, not really my thing. Enjoyed "I Want to Take You Higher" and "Sing A Single Song" the most

didnt listen to the full thing, liked the instrumentals tho. very funky and groovy.

Solid stuff.

Funky.. loved it

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. There were several recognizable hits that I would never have known who the artist was. Definitely something I would listen to in the background, not sure I would buy. 3.5/5

The quickest hour in music. Urge everyone to listen to this.

The 13 minute song was actually my favorite one

Bit of a long one in places. Lyrics caught me off guard on "that" song. Good musicianship even if it left me a little bored at times.

Groovy man

This was again some super weird songs but it was pretty entertaining. I really enjoyed laughing at some of the lines. It was like a instrumental oriented blackish soul band.

Funky for sure. But outside the two classic songs I found this fairly mediocre. 3/5

So pushy.

Good funk to it

You have a full blown head cold and you think maybe blasting 13:46 minutes worth of an instrumental funk jam called "Sex Machine" into your ears will force the mucus out of your nose. 3.5

Classic album with so many great tracks!

Funky 60s sounds.

Everyday People is one of my favorite songs of the 1960’s. Not sure I loved the 13 minute jam at the end however.

Some good songs and some very funky songs. Not too bad.

*Everyday people is a banger *Lots of good energy and funk sound but some got repetitive over the album *Loved the band backing the vocals

Bra, men inte fantastisk. Rätt lättviktiga låtar, förvånansvärt nära traditionell 60-talspop emellanåt. Bäst: Everyday people och Don’t call med n—-, whitey. En ganska stark trea.

Stand! har några riktigt bra låtar: titelspåret, don’t call me… och Everyday people. Men här finns också den trista bluesjammiga Sex Machine. Som album håller det inte hela vägen. Det är ju uppföljaren There’s a riot… som är mästerverket.

A blend of funk, rock and soul. Sly & The Family Stone are a classic. For me, this was more of a "really enjoying the highs, not really enjoying the rest."

Very funk heavy. Long instrumental tracks. Very repetitive choruses compared to today’s standards (don’t call me n***a, whitey). Love when an album plays with channel isolation, Even with the weird screaming going across channels. Certified bops on here: Everyday People, Stand!, you can make it if you still try

Fairly neutral on this one but I did find it pleasant while it was on

Everyday people was recognizable. The rest was funky

R&B/funk. Thought I’d like this more than I did. Some good instrumentation but never felt like it was all put together.

I think if give this 3.5 so idk if I'm rating it too low.

Het eerste nummer van het album moet ik even buiten beschouwing laten, maar de rest vind ik eigenlijk best funky en leuk.

#694. Not the most interesting all the way through, but there was some cool stuff in there. 3/5: acceptable

6/10. Usually my kind of music but the songs were a little long and some weren’t memorable. Some good jams though.

Happy Tuesday folks and going in blind once again. Sly and The Family Stones Stand! From 1969. From the first track it definitely has the soul feel down to a tee, backing of organs and brass with high powered choir and vocals, with a funky breakdown towards the end of the track, it's funky, feel good, the lyrics are certainly... something but not a bad listen. I'm not going to name the next track for obvious reasons, getting past the first 30 seconds, musically this track is a lot of fun, that mixture of brass, funky wahs from the guitar and some very creative vocal work both lead and backing, it's an intense but funky track. From the year this album was released, it's clear that Sly and The Family Stone definitely fronted a lot of new sounds for the time, funk, soul fusion, rock, with hints of psychedelia and each track opens the listener to a new creative fusion of all of these, each song is tightly put together. Notably I Want to Take You Higher does this perfectly and is a stand out track for me, mixes the funky drum and bass, with the explosive brass backed by a high soul choir and with a electric guitar that makes itself known but doesn't overstay it's welcome. The isn't entirely high energy, shown clearly with Somebody's Watching You, an easy going track that leans more on light funk than the high energy needed for soul music, nothing wrong with this at all as the band is tightly put together, with the welcome addition of an electric organ adding additional flavour. Overall this album was a fun listen and right up my alley. 3.1/5 MTW

Funky, though not my vibe. 6/10

Funky. "Stand!" is my favorite song off this album. 3/5

So repetitive

It was okay. 60s Funk has a lot to offer, and I feel like I've just overall heard better come out of the same period. Points for making a long instrumental track that sounds pretty good, though. I feel like they should've either leaned into the lyrics or the funk a little more. Instead they shot for both and couldn't do both well enough for either to be great outside of a handful of tracks.

I can't put my finger on it, but there is a whole vibe around the music on this album that unsettles me somehow. It could be something to do with the appearance of Sparky the talking wah-wah on several of the tracks, or something else... I don't know. In any case, I can't see me revisiting the album anytime soon, and even the massive "Everyday People" leaves me feeling a little strange.

This is a good album. I'm going to give it 3 stars.

Not for me

This album made me realize that not all 3 star ratings are equal… Sometimes I feel like an album that has 3 stars would be better suited with 2.5 or a 3.5 but obviously that can’t be done here so I stick with 3 “Stand!” is one of those albums that I think deserves a 3.5 The title track is the stand out song as it features the highlight of the album; an electric transition (with around 51 seconds to go) into an incredibly groovy beat that had me head bopping the second it started Sing a Simple Song was very close to being put in the “Favorites” category (an all-around fun track) but just missed the mark The rest of the album was enjoyable and it’s one of the better listening experiences I’ve had recently It’s hard to listen to an album like this and not have a good time Favorites: Stand! Honorable Mentions: Sing a Simple Song

Sex machine does NOT need to be that long but it’s a cool bluesy album

Cover 6 Good album although I drifted when it became just instrumental, even though it was fun and interesting. Overall, I only truly enjoyed a couple of songs.

So funky. Iconic. Track 2 is something.

fun stuff

Something a bit different, not too bad, but I doubt I'll listen to it again

Some big songs on there, but also filler Familiarity: 3 – Know some songs Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 2 - Little What can I remember the next day?: 2 - Little Best song: Sing a Simple Song

Not bad

Prrtty generic bops, not very memorable

I had never heard of the artist or album before. I have not really listened to music like this before, nor a whole album. It was enjoyable. I can see how this may have been a watershed moment or landmark album for its time and went on to influence lots of artists in the 70s and beyond. It's a good piece, the tracks all flow well together. There wasn't a standout track for me. I don't think I would seek it out to listen to again.

Old soul/funk, easy listen, social statements about racism. However, extensive intrumental interludes bloats the playlist, especially at the end. Good window in contemporary's feelings and worldview, but hardly holds up in 2020s. +Somebody's watching you +Everyday people

Critical in merging funk and soul with psychedelic rock. If there’s one thing this band does right, it’s find a nice groove (that bass thump is killer). They’re all in the pocket, regardless if a lighter pop song or a deep dirty psych funk. And they do indeed vary between a hippie positivity and cynical darkness. There are a few classic songs, but a good portion of the album doesn’t stand out to me. I’m typically a fan of long jams, but Sex Machine doesn’t have enough to keep it interesting for 13 min. A good listen and valuable album nonetheless, but overall respect Sky’s ideas more than I care to revisit the album.

Sly and the Family Stone were pioneers—one of the first major racially integrated, mixed-gender bands, blending soul, funk, rock, and psychedelia into something nobody else was doing in the late ’60s. Stand! is often held up as their masterpiece, packed with big hits like “Everyday People” and “I Want to Take You Higher,” the kind of songs that practically radiate good vibes and Woodstock-era optimism. And yet, I just can’t fully connect with them. Musically, I admire what they do, but the vocals never quite hit my ears right—something about the delivery just doesn’t land. Their poppier hits feel a bit too squeaky-clean for me, while the funkier deep cuts aren't clean enought. It’s an odd mismatch where I like the idea of the band more than the listening experience. I don’t dislike Stand!, but it’s one of those albums I respect more than I revisit.

Sick nasty groove

The vocalist was fantastic. The messages in the songs were clear, the mixing was great, the music was fantastic. Fantastic. I'm still very uncomfortable with the n-word in songs, but outside of that I liked this album.

This was groovy, I quite enjoyed listening to it, but can't recall any of the tracks a few days later.

Groovy music to dance to, not so much sit down and listening music. Fantastic instrumentation though, that guitar almost has a voice.

didn't quite connect with me

*** Too much Soul to me. Anyway, it‘s ok

The song sex machine is offensive for being 13 minutes long despite just being an instrumental loop with charlie brown adult vocals for parts of it, rest of the album is good

This was funky and fun and very enjoyable. I really liked this but maybe wouldn’t listen to it again.

Everyday people is an all time great.

Some decent tracks in here

Too funky for me!

Buen sonido, tan guapas las canciones pero creo que sex machine es excesivamente larga. 6/10

Top hits here but my ch sounds dated after 56 years

Some good songs on here but I probably wouldn't listen to this album again.

Gibt Highlights aber auch einige Tiefpunkte. Wilder Mix aus genres (natürlich grundlegend Funk) und Techniken aber hinsichtlich text und Gesang nix besonderes. 3/5

Good not great. I like a few of the other Family Stone albums a bit more. Self titled track is the best.

Has its moments

-i first became aware of this album a couple of weeks ago when Sly Stone died. listening to it now i can 100% understand the hype and impact… it’s really not like anything else i’ve heard from this time period -there were definitely a few songs i could go without but damn, i’d like to listen to this again soon. absolutely love the rhythms and vocals -Favorites are I Want to Take You Higher, Somebody’s Watching You, and Sing a Simple Song

Some fun songs but a bit uneven

Funky, poppy, and most importantly, fun. Sly brought the people together!

Never really listened to any black rock from the 60s besides this, so it was a fun experience

I can see why this was popular in the time it was released. I think you'll like it more than I did. I prefer Earth, Wind and Fire.

a funky album ! enjoyed “I Want to Take You Higher” and “Somebody’s Watching You”

point3.

Fun album, definitely has it's standouts vs. other songs you could take or leave. Highlights: Everyday People, I Want to Take You Higher. Stand!

Psychadelic funk done in a pretty cool way. I am a stickler for long songs, so Sex Machine was probably my favorite track. Solid all around but nothing too incredible. 5/10

A lot of Funk going on here but not the best the genre I’ve heard. Still a solid album

Not exactly my type of music, but I enjoyed some of the more funky songs!

Noe ålreit, noe rot. Helt middels.

Unusual Music for me. Simple Song I knew from a sample from Mc Bomber :-)

- slaps pretty damn hard, 3-4/5 so far - "sex machine" kinda goes crazy

I was expecting a lot more from this album, but it just didn’t deliver. Overall, it felt a bit dull and boring, although a few songs did stand out.

"Family Stone" is a weird compound word order, right? It's giving Sloop John. It's giving court martial. You get the picture. Anyway, this album isn't my genre of choice, but I do know it is a classic (at least according to the metric of "I listened to the best 500 songs as decided by Rolling Stone in high school and a few of these were definitely on there"). It is wild to see the n-word just in a title, uncensoredly (by the by, supposedly the euphemism "n-word" didn't come about until 1995!!! and now we've got r, b, c, f, gay f, simply all kinds of -words.) I like that there are multiple vocal-and-instrumentalists. I feel like 'Everyday People' would be a song I liked if only it weren't in a commercial I saw 50x/day at a critical period. Still, "I am no better and neither are you" is a linguistically interesting line. For that matter, so is "and they know what you're sayin' makes sense at all"! Did they not have negative polarity items in the 1960s? Non-NPI highlight: the line "games are to be played with toys, et cetera".

Slightly groovy, but also a tad forgettable.

Não é um estilo de música que eu procuro ouvir, no entanto gostei bastante de quatro músicas.

A few good tracks, rest mostly filler at best.

very good!

I enjoyed three songs on this (Stand!, Everyday People, and You Can Make It If You Try). Some of the others went on too long for my taste. I appreciate the lyrics and social justice aspects of this and can certainly see why it's important and on the list.

Det svänger katten, men är knappast musik jag lyssnar på. Passar på fest, till dans ... Trea.

I'd say 3.5 for me

it was fine. i got REALLY sick of whatever was making that "bow bow bow bow" sound tho

listening to this album on the exact day sly stone passed away is uncanny... what a weird feeling. this is a solid album with high highs and low lows, the lowest of which is probably the nearly 14-minute-long track, sex machine, which spends a very long time saying nothing at all. but i'll definitely groove to the two bigger songs any day. favorites: i want to take you higher, everyday people

On the plus side, this is a progressive, visionary and forward-thinking record. The vocal and instrumental arrangements are innovative and interesting. Standout tracks include "I Want To Take You Higher", "Everyday People" and the album's title track. On the minus side, there's *way* too much repetitive jamming, the worst offender being "Sex Machine", a 13-minute track that takes up an entire third of the record and left me wondering how to pull the plug.

I came for the funk, stayed for the soul, and… politely excused myself during “Sex Machine.” “Soul Clappin’” and “I Want to Take You Higher” are everything I wanted. “Everyday People” remains timeless, blending social commentary with a melody so catchy it could solve a minor conflict. But the 13-minute sprawl of “Sex Machine” dragged the vibe from *get down* to *lie down*. I’m gonna need a nap, but not a cigarette, after that one.

3 stars Very funky but not as good as I remember. I think I prefer another album. Would listen to again.

Stand! is a funky and energetic album that tries to do it all at once – political message, sing-alongs, celebration, and protest stirred together in one colorful mix. Musically, it's undoubtedly important and groundbreaking, but as a listener today, it can feel over-the-top and forced. The album loses me in its insistent tone, where the energy often drowns out the nuances. Tracks like “Somebody’s Watching You” and “I Want to Take You Higher” stand out with strong grooves and a more focused atmosphere, but the rest of the record doesn’t resonate with me. I enjoy funk, but this is too much Like it’s shouting when I’d rather it spoke. Perhaps it hits deeper if you have a stronger connection to the album’s themes. For me, it ends up feeling more like a historical footnote... important, but not personally engaging. 3/5

Fun bops, leaning more towards 4 than 3 but I'm not sure I would seek this out independently

Funk and soul tends to be very hit or miss for me, but this one definitely hit! "Sex Machine" was a weak point, but the rest of the album was a pretty fun, funky time.

Fun, funky, a couple outdated songs if yanno what I mean. But overall good time

Very funky, 60s civil rights vibe. Stand is the best song probably. The sex one is too long

This is an album that's less than the sum of its parts. Everyday People and Stand! are all-time bangers but the rest of this album is pretty underwhelming.

talvez nao o melhor album deles? gostei ok

3.2 2x

I wish I liked this one just a bit more! I like funk, but nothing about this particular album really stood out to me.

It was fine. Good, even. Very funky. Unquestionably influential in the 70s, and I can’t help but imagine people dancing to this in that era when listening. I’m not sure it’s aged particularly well outside of that era, though. No song really stood out in my mind except the 13-minute long Sex Machine, which really overstayed its welcome.

was not that interesting to listing to

Not bad. Not my thing. Liked sex machine though. Good music

"I love the beats. Most songs were a lot of fun. I knew the ""Everyday people"" song already. "

Hmmm. This is good soul. If we hadn't already had some funkadelic and other similar stuff, it'd probably be more exciting to me. But as it is, it's some seriously funky soul that I quite like. But I guess I just don't see it standing out from a lot of other motown and soul, so it gets a 3.5 from me. The big standout hit doesnt do as much for me as for others, so I'll round it down.

Half of this album was really fun, and I kind of got lost on the other half.

Second track is gonna kill at the karaoke

Not bad, not really my genre so got a bit bored. Some good moments, enjoyed parts of You can make it if you try, and Somebody's watching you. Had to skip Sex Machine after about 7 mins as the bass line riff got boring.

Þetta var fínt og eflaust betra en ég upplifði það sem. Of mikið wah wah rúnk fyrir minn smekk. Fallegu lögin geggjuð og skrítnu lögin skrítin. Solid þristur.

Ágætt.

I had a lot of fun listening to this and there are a lot of great instrumental parts but I feel like the first song was the only one with a chorus that was punchy enough to stick with me on a first listen. I get the feeling I would enjoy this a lot more over time but alas I must move on.

fuzz bass to die for

I liked this album. While a lot of it felt a bit overdone and corny at some points, there were some really cool parts as well (when I couldn't tell for 3/4 of a song whether or not it was a person or an instrument.) Overall it felt like I was in a scene in Crooklyn for most of the album, and I have no problems with that. 3.25

One of those albums that I only love one song from. Cool album generally.

Very nice

much enjoyment

Fun and powerful in its own way but not really all that special musically

I wanted to like this more. Pretty repetitive, long instrumentals. 3/5

Honestly a lot of these songs I don’t like that much :/

Such a fun album but really nothing hits like everyday people

Like some of the instrumentals and a few catchy lyrics but overall not for me

I thought this was better than some others that we have had from this genre. The 15 minute instrumental was a bit too long though.

Only big drawback was the 13-15 minute song

apart from the 13 minute track, it was an interesting listen. prob wouldn't seek it out again but appreciate it's sound

Pretty good, 70s vibe for sure. Not something I would usually listen to but I really enjoyed it.

A fine little album. Can get a bit same-y by the end, but none of it is by any means bad. 6/10

Just many odd choices through out the album. Not for me

It’s not bad just not for me. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Sing A Simple Song was my favourite track. Funky Album.

Some really well done funk on here. “Everyday People” and “You Can Make it if You Try” are standouts. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again

I haven’t really been listing to Funk that much, so I‘m really excited how this plays out Stand!: solid opener, i really like the rhythm and the message of this song, it’s a vibe 3.7/5 Don’t Call Me N****r, Whitey: the guitar eats and the female voice too, also the harmonising is top tier 3.9/5 I Want to Take You Higher: vocals are eating and i love the harmonica and the different voices 3.5/5 Somebody‘s Watching You: big fan of the instrumentals, also it gives me certain TV Girl vibes, idk 4/5 Sing a Simple Song: in love with the concept behind this and how unserious this is 4.1/5 Everyday People: the message, the harmony, i loveee and fw this heavy 4.1/5 Sex Machine: very little lyrics for such a long song, but it’s a vibe, and a bit low key, great build-up 3.4/5 You Can Make It If You Try: strong intro, a bit repetitive for me tho, but i love the instrumentals 2.7/5 Soul Clappin‘ II: it’s a mood and i like the vocals here, it gets kinda boring with time 2.9/5 My Brain (Zig-Zag): idk i like that track, but i need lyrics in a song and there’s just not any😭 2.5/5

Funky/rocky/souly. Incredible wah on e.g. Dont Call Me N*****, Whitey 13 min mainly instrumental funky jam on Sex Machine Pretty interesting album

I only liked 2-3 songs

Not exactly my kind of thing but I enjoyed this. Psychedelic, funky soul with some great powerful vocals. There's a great energy to this album and you can feel it as you're listening. I'd happily add any one of these tracks to a playlist and wouldn't mind them popping up at any point.

Big 60's Wall of Sound in evidence.

Lite funk-soul-rock, nice även om ingen enskild låt stack ut för mig

pretty notable cuts, some of which have been sampled til Kingdom Come and back. nice to know origin.

Some songs were better with others on this album. Lots of good funk vibes

Really like everyday people: I like the lyrics and the chugging guitar paired with the piano. Love the tone on the guitar solos! So cool how they make it sound like its talking (Sex Machine and Don't Call Me...) Very consistent sound throughout. This genre of music is perfectly neutral to me: it sounds objectively good and there are some gold nuggets in here. Overall though, there a level of sameness and I don't really gravitate towards listening to it. Favorite Tracks: I want to take you higher, Sing a Simple Song, Everyday People

没get到这类风格

Aika menevää funkkia, mutta ei ihan mitään omaa suosikkia. Parhaat: I Want To Take You Higher, Sing A Simple Song

Hearing the songs other than the singles that have been popular for a very long time was amazing. I didn't know that their musicality extended that far.

Decent funk album. I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of this kind of music, but I thought the guitar work was very impressive. Nothing too noteworthy, and the songs (especially the instrumental) do overstay their welcome a bit. Some things to like, but largely forgettable for me. Top tracks: I Want to Take You Higher, Sing a Simple Song, Everyday People

Did I hear that right? "There's a midget standing tall…."

I don't like this album because I don't like the genre of music that they play and because I don't like the beat it is in the music. I would not recommend this album to someone else because I feel like this type of music is not very popular and not a lot of people are into this type of music right now so I wouldn't waste someones time by telling them to listen to this album. If I know that they like this type of music then I might recommend this to someone else but for the most part knowing what music is popular I wouldn't be recommending this to another person. I would give the album "Stand!" 3 stars out of 5.

the cover looks cool i like the cover its colorful the first song i like the beat of it they all had a nice and cool beat to them i liked the songs very much i would probaly have listen to themn again

the first song is good i kinda like it i like the sounds of the instruments and how the song sounds overall. the next song is okay i still like the sounds and stuff but its slower and not as good. the next song is still okay not much to say its the same as the rest. the last song is okay too it has a really weird start i dont really like it. overall i wouldn't really recommend it

I knew "Everyday People" but not the rest, and none of the other tracks really grabbed my attention. It's a decent funk album.

it was neat

Anche se nelle canzoni do molto peso al testo, grande scoperta delle sonorità black

Repetitive but fun medium-energy instrumental drum/guitar tracks carried by some great vocals. Halfway between soul and funk. Track 3 and 6 could be on the cowboy bebop soundtrack, but this album does feel slightly sauceless otherwise. Some tracks are in there twice as singles.

Good hits. Funky sound

I wanted to like this album more than I did.

Didn’t think I’d like it initially but it definitely won me over. Very soulful

Fun and soulful album. Lots that I recognized with some that I didn’t know was them

I think I would have enjoyed this album a lot if I had picked it up in the 70's. Stand is a great song, I knew it from Pump up the Volume soundtrack but didn't realize it was Sly's

-a Definite age-old 'MOOD' album. Works just as well today thou. -Loved that Jams never felt like they went on tooo long. -Influence felt.

A lot wiggier than I remember this being. The last four minutes of "Don't Call Me..." could go, as could all of that fill-the-album-time-with-cocaine of "Sex Machine" but the rest are all hits for a reason.

I've listened to this album at least five times, and my favorite songs are the last two: Soul Clappin' II and My Brain. Followed by Sex Machine. Not sure why?

This feels a bit too uneven for me to rate more highly. The funky bits can hit hard, but there are turns that just feel too... AM radio? for me.

Some timeless singles and some egregious padding here. "Don't call me N$%&&, Whitey" did not need to be 5+ minutes when it only has one verse. I also didnt need 15 minutes of the Sex Machine jam. But you cannot deny how good their pop songs are when they stay in that lane.

Ok I'm gonna be less forgiving from now on. This is by no means a bad album - same as the previous one, it's fun, but I'm not sure it has a place within the 1001 greatest albums of all time, as it does have quite some tracks with no real merit, to my feeling.

There's some bangers on here that must have been awesome to hear/see live back in the day.

solid 3 stars

I liked this about the same amount as the last Sly album we got, which is to say, enough to score it a high three but not quite four. Funky fun, but doesn't reach the heights of (e.g.) Funkadelic

Great tunes

Pretty funky and fun.

A little too much talkbox jamming in the second half for my liking, but has some great songs on it

Groovy

Knew a few of the hits. Really enjoyed Stand.

Fun and funky! Love Stand! and Everyday People.

Lot more rock n roll than I imagined. Standouts were: Sex Machine (12 min instrumental beast) , i want to take you higher, don’t call me nigger, Whitey. I feel like parts of album don’t have much variation, the songs sound the same. Also it’s such a short album, two of the songs repeat. The building up of the music it the songs was very cool. Such a funky sounds

I’ve heard better Sly and The family stone album, but it’s allright

“Stand!” is a powerful and vibrant album that evokes aspects of social consciousness often associated with Marvin Gaye or Curtis Mayfield. This feels like a real ensemble piece, with a wide range of numerous vocalists mixed with thumping bass lines, punctuating keyboards, joyful sax and horns, reverberating guitar solos, and some Latin inspired percussion, all wrapped up in (a mostly controlled) psychedelic chaos. The more structured tracks are exceptional, including "Stand!", "You Can Make It If You Try", and the classic "Everyday People". In contrast, some of the less structured pieces resemble jam sessions, and for the most part, mix in well with the rest of the album. However, "Sex Machine" is overly lengthy and chaotic to the point of self-indulgence, which detracts from the album's quality. Overall, this album is a highly enjoyable, brimming with energy.

Listened: 24/02/2025 Album no: 24 % rating: 69% Fave Song: Sex Machine Not my first Sly and the family stone experience and it won’t be my last. Lots of funky bangers on this one which is a nice welcome change. I can also imagine that this band were quite controversial back in the day, but love that for them. The instrument on Sex Machine sounded like someone scatting which was super cool. Yeah, enjoyed!

irritating funk

Not bad

funky soul

Pretty pretty alright

I was not very familiar with Sly & The Family Stone, like I had heard of them but I never heard their music. Well this album is a great jumping off point cause it’s super funky and powerful. There’s some songs in this album with VERY powerful lyrics and topics. But the thing that grabbed my attention the most was the music. The music is so good I would’ve been cool with the second half of the album being instrumental versions of all the songs on the album. Even though it wasn’t like a perfect 5, I’d still recommend this album to someone unfamiliar with it.

Yeah excellent. Would never listen normally. Sound is superb and the instrumentation fantastic, classic funk but with without the need for chic-esque guitar attack, still lots of energy through the rhythm and the horns. Loved the overall vibe, huge influences from RnB and psychadelia. The only downside for me is the show-tuneyness, it was predictable in a sense that the sound is so familiar, but often melodies would follow a more musical, show-tune-esque path that the psychadelia I was expecting. This kid of reduced the cool factor that's brimming in the funk and soul elements but still very highly rated album if not totally fitting with what I was expecting. 'You can make it if you try' probably the standout track for me.

Sounds like a more fancy Jackson 5 at times, with much better instruments and guitar solos especially, but altogether it was a pretty boring album. Maybe the woodstock performance was better, but the recording was just average.

I thought it was interesting but didn’t really connect with.

This one was alright!

This was good. Some of the language hasn't aged well... Of it's time!

War mir etwas zu stressig.

I understand the cultural significance of this band and album, but in my opinion the majority of the music doesn’t resonate with me. There are some great songs and great funky grooves. A solid album.

Excellent production, great musicianship, boring bollocks.

It’s ok

Good album, I imagine at the time some of this would have been pretty groundbreaking. Hard to ding it for anything but not sure how often I'll be coming back
