The originals, they set the bar!

I didn’t realize how old The Rolling Stones were. Very beach boys. 5 for its continued groovyness and historical influence.

All covers. So bluesy! I loved it.

Very old style rock. Chuck berry esque, bluesy. Got that swing to it. Great album. 9/10

The Greatest Cover Band Ever!!!

Nacimiento de la leyenda. Vinilo.

Tell me hyvät kitarasoundit 4/5

Classic

This might not have scored as high as it did if I didn't just love hearing where the Rolling Stones came from and their ode to this music. What a great début!

Very fun to listen to this debut Rolling Stones album. I am certainly more familiar and keen to their original works, but this is one that I needed to listen to before I die.

While Mick Jagger's literal voice is unmistakable, it's clear the band hasn't found the Rolling Stones' voice quite yet. This sounds like some talented kids imitating their musical heroes. But if you're going to make a list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die, I think you've got to put the Rolling Stones' debut on that list. So even though I wasn't blown away by the music on this album, it's still pretty great and earns 5 stars for historical significance.

Who are these suited lads looking so dapper? I’m glad this very early Rolling Stones album should be on this list. It’s pretty interesting to hear them as they found their way, and I liked all the covers. Not my favorite Rolling Stones album, but that’s a pretty high bar, and I still enjoyed this a lot.

You have to look at this album in context of time. R&B performed by white guys was revolutionary in 64. Maybe the 'bad boys' image of the Stones was founded by this album.

Love it, classic, the template of a band.

"The Rolling Stones" (1964), the eponymous debut album by the legendary rock band, is a raw and electrifying burst of rhythm and blues energy. From the opening chords of "Route 66" to the soulful cover of Willie Dixon's "I Just Want to Make Love to You," the album captures the youthful exuberance and musical prowess of the early Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger's charismatic vocals, Keith Richards' gritty guitar, and the band's overall synergy make this record an enduring classic. It laid the foundation for the Stones' iconic sound and established them as a force to be reckoned with in the rock 'n' roll scene. "The Rolling Stones" is a 5/5, a landmark debut that set the stage for decades of rock greatness.

hell yeah man

They should have quit while they were ahead.

Super Album pour une premier j'ai adoré. 5

pedras rolantes

This is the kind of stuff that I was hoping to hear a ton of with this list. Mona- I thought this was Bo Diddley at first. There was another song that sounded just like a chuck berry song.

Oh what a stellar album. I’m new to most Rolling Stones but as far as debuts go, this is way better than most. Perfect and timeless.

What a completely unexpected debut for the Rolling Stones! These blue classics just fly through my headphones though. Very important piece of music history, and an album very well deserving of this distinction. Favorite track: Carol

Peerless and answers the question for me of comparisons to The Beatles - how can you compare apples to oranges?

It's the rolling stones

From the very beginning the Stones had a raw and decadent sound, the crude production adds rather subtracts. Sure it relies heavily on covers but that's just a reflection of those times. Easily the best of their early albums.

A great album

Maybe I'm in the minority but I like good covers. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were an awesome cover band when they chose to play covers. I loved the Beatles BBC recordings which were populated with a ton of covers. It gave us a glimpse of what it must have been like to hear them in the Cavern Club or during their grueling years in Hamburg. That's what we're getting here with the Stones, their beginnings of the type of stuff we would have heard them playing in clubs when the notion of writing their own stuff was still in the future. Good takes and enjoyable.

es un álbum muy clásico, me gustó pero realmente no es mi estilo, muy bueno

this was great - a classic!

A banda já mostra porque era uma das "mais perigosas" do mundo nesse álbum. QoA Vesper.

Short and iconic. Enjoyed an album that was only 32 minutes long as opposed to double albums coming in at 2.5 hours.

Exciting

A fun album that I normally wouldn’t listen to on my own simply because I’d rather hear Stones albums of originals. All but one song here is a cover. Still some fantastic vocals and harp playing by Mick and great blues guitar by Keith.

I’ve always found it interesting that the “British Invasion” bands of the 60s started off covering or completely ripping off American blues and Motown sounds. An homage? Sure. A little racist that they rode that sound to arguably bigger success than the original artists? Perhaps. But for the sake of this rating, I’m just going to focus on the homage.

Solid covers (with one song of their own blended in nicely) of blues pop. Definitely shows their roots.

Ahead of its time, some fantastic songs on here, I like the (probably unintended) low-fi sound.

Finally. Something decent. Definitely a fan

Getting Stones albums 2 days in a row makes for a GREAT WEEK. This early album of theirs is all covers I think but does show their incredible musical talent if not their future song writing prowess. Only 4 stars because they didn't write most or all of this one but still a worthy listen.

I like the stones. This was a decent album, but on my two listens nothing really stuck.

I love the early Rolling Stones blues, so this is a treat. When the Ramones said you could call what they did Punk, but it was really just Rock and Roll, this is the type of music I imaging they were harkening back to in the first couple of tracks. Honest I Do is a little bit of a speed bump in the Rock n Roll road, but at least it went by fast. Then on to the Bo Diddley Beat of Mona. The rest of the album isn't amazing, but it is good for the times. Walk the Dog is really bad, IMHO.

We love the stones, this is much older than what I am used to listening to but it was a good album, set them up for success

Very nice.

Some good ol' rock-'n'-roll

Wow what a debut album. I can't imagine how mind blowing this must have been in 1964!

Really good performances, especially the vocals, but more a collection of songs than a great album

I liked it, but their later work is definitely better

Love this

These early albums are where the Stones and the Beatles sound the most alike, but even here the Stones already had a harder, grittier sound. They felt a little dirtier right out of the gate, which helps this stand apart even when you can still hear that early 60s British sound all over it. Going back to my point about British artists being heavily influenced by Black blues and rock musicians, it’s pretty wild to think that all but three of these songs are by Black artists. That really says a lot about where this band was pulling from early on. This one might not have the fully formed Stones identity yet, but it’s still a really solid album and an easy 4 for me.

Better. Several iconic songs that show up in whole or in part from artists I grew up with in the 80s (familiar is easier to like on a one-a-day project like this). Standout example - Mona /How Soon in Now and Witness songs surely My Generation. I can imagine this album sounded fresh and impressive in 1964. 4/5

I was always a Beatles guy, but I get this album. Good solos, good songs, definitely a product of its time, but a high quality product of its time.

I wish it was longer! A little more structure would get it to a 5

Best Song: Not Fade Away The Stones are a long time favorite of mine yet I never heard this. It is good but nowhere near peak Stones as it's mostly covers and they are still coming to grasp their musical style. 4/5.

Fun record!

The missing link album-from one generation to another.

Full of gems

Really solid debut. I’m not a massive cover guy so I imagine I’d prefer an album of all the original songs, but still a great listen.

Good album, fun listen, but no takeaways from me. Nothing I see myself jamming out to, but still enjoyed it.

i guess i would have loved this album back then

A rock and roll blues album in the vain of chuck berry and Bo diddley. Lots of fun here, but nothing too ground breaking. They deviate from that a little with “tell me”. My favorite was “walk the dog”, their attempt to start a dance craze I suppose?

It has happened more than once that I'm surprised by how much I like the Rolling Stones. I don't consider them a top tier band even though I like several of their contemporaries like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. I think because they're SO commercially successful - often literally as their songs appear in advertisements regularly - I don't give them enough credit for just be a good old fashioned rock and roll band with a lot of bangers.

el principio de una de las bandas más grandes e importantes de la historia con su raices dentro del blues y el R&b claramente mostrando lo que podría ser el sonido que vendría en un futuro y que los hara llenar estadios También marcando la estética y sonido característico de la invasión británica

Very classic sound for a very classic band.

Certainly it not their best work, but you get flashes of what’s to come. 4 stars

Good stones, but not great stones. 4 *

Classy

4 stars

the rolling stones

Great album

Let's be honest here; every song on this album, with the exception of the one original, was done better by a Black artist. Factoring that in, I cant give it higher than 4, even though I had a great time listening to it.

Good coverd

I’ve always loved The Rolling Stones, especially their early blues sound and raw R&B roots, so going back to their debut album feels like revisiting the very foundations of the band. It’s an important record historically, you can hear a group still in their formative years but already brimming with attitude and confidence. The album is largely made up of blues and R&B covers, which was typical of the time, with the exception of the first Jagger–Richards original, “Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)”. But this doesn’t feel like a limitation. Instead, it showcases the band’s ability to reinterpret American blues with a distinctly British edge. Mick Jagger’s vocals are already full of swagger and bite, and the guitar work has that loose, rolling groove that would become their signature. There’s a youthful energy throughout — slightly rough around the edges, but that rawness is part of the charm. Favourite tracks: “Route 66,” “Mona (I Need You Baby),” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You” are standouts. Each one captures the band’s early fire and their deep love of blues music. Least favourite tracks: There isn’t a bad track here. Album artwork: An iconic first image of the Stones on record. Moody, serious, and already projecting that rebellious mystique.

Not much difference between all the 60’s era British lads playing blues tracks from the Deep South. Beatles, Kinks, Stones, and all the lessers sounding as close as brothers can, yet still just white boys from across the pond. The sound is good, and Richard’s guitar work is better than the rest of his contemporaries. A fun but modest start to an amazing life. Little could they know they’d become the greatest rock band ever.

creoq ue primera vez que escucho disco de los rolling completo. siento que si los escuchaba sin saber que eran ellos no reconocia ni un tema.

I love the Rolling Stones, but that being said, I love them for their later albums, not this one. It's not bad, though, obviously.

This is a tough one to rate, and I'm in a weird position. The previous album I had generated for me was Sticky Fingers, also by The Rolling Stones. I felt very neutral about it and gave it a 3/5, even though I know it's regarded as some of their better work. The position I find myself in is that I actually enjoyed this album a lot more than Sticky Fingers... although I feel it's less deserving of a spot on the list, on account of being almost exclusively covers of other artists' songs. I hate to say it, but maybe that's why I liked it as much as I did... And so this is the tough position I'm in: Do I rate it positively because I enjoyed listening to it? Or negatively because I don't believe it really warrants inclusion on the list when there are 5 other Stones albums and plenty of stuff that got left off? Half the songs on here are originally from albums that would've been better choices for inclusion on the list. Ultimately, I can't pretend I disliked the album, and I can't overlook the fact that I had a better time listening to it than I did with Sticky Fingers... And credit where credit is due, as an album of blues rock covers, the performance on this is top notch.

pretty good i think actually

Very solid but nothing wow

Aha, deutlich anderer Sound finde ich im Vergleich zu den späteren Alben :D Wahnsinn das dieses Album in den 60ern rauskam und die heute noch ne Rolle spielen, konnte man sich gut anhören

Great classic album. It kind of blended into one seamless listen. I guess that’s 60’s rock!

Love the Stones!

Dancey, fun, great all around.

A couple of interesting things here. 1 - my last album was Elvis Presley’s “Elvis Is Back,” released four years before this one. This album reimagines many hits from the Elvis era and highlights how much they really rip. Elvis deeply pales in comparison. 2 - I was raised in a Beatles household. I came to my appreciation of the Stones later in life. But I think this is a real sliding doors situation. What if this was my foundational stuff? I’d probably be president right now.

A very strong debut that still holds up despite lots of early 60s music feeling samey. It’s not the Stone’s peak, but still solid.

Started off better than it ended. Had me snapping my fingers and clicking my heels, though.

fun easy listen

Day730 - a good start for one of the best. rock bands of all time. i didn’t know how much phil spector did for them at the beginning

My foot was tapping right from Route 66. Mona is Not Fade Away and Route 66 is on various albums, and there are various track listings for UK and US releases, which is partly band experimentation but mostly marketing. If they keep going from this start they should be good 😁 1. Route 66 2. Little By Little 3. Tell Me (You're Coming Back)

I just really like these early 60's British Invasion records. It may just be full of covers and have no real hits, courtesy of the record labels album policies at that time, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it. The record is really energetic and the songs chosen here are pretty fun. The Stones went on to make more interesting music, but this is still a good album.

Classic.

++: Route 66, Honest I Do, Mona (I Need You Baby), Now I've Got a Witness (Like Uncle Phil and Uncle Gene), Little by Little, I'm a King Bee, Carol, You Can Make It If You Try, Walking the Dog +: I Just Want to Make Love to You, Can I get a Witness +-: Tell Me (You're Coming Back) 8,2/10

Good renditions, but I wish more of the originals were in an album format compatible with the list

Believe it or not, the Rolling Stones are pretty good

7 - GOOD

This was a solid debut, even though most of the album consists of covers rather than original material. One thing that really stood out to me while listening was how so many of the major artists from the ’60s started out doing the same thing, which was covering the previous generation’s songs. It really puts into perspective the argument that modern music lacks originality because, in reality, this cycle of reinterpretation has been happening for decades. Regardless, the bluesy vibe of this album give you a good look at where The Rolling Stones started.

An early record, so if sounds a bit familiar and yet very different from what I usually know of their discography. Oddly enough, right after I finished listening to this album it gave me a 2019 remaster of La grange by ZZ Top and even on a phone speaker I’m feeling it more this time around.

Good early Stones

Well, damn, this was really good. I've definitely become a much bigger fan of the Rolling Stones. Little hard to believe this was more than 60 years ago now, because it sounds modern in a lot of ways. Yes, there are a lot of covers on here, but they have plenty of distinctive character and variety.

The record that introduced us to the stones has some fun and catchy blues jams

Mostly covers. Not what I expected for a debut album. Young Stones are good, and just trying to showcase their chops here.

Second Stones album in my first 100 albums and I was nervous after I didn't like the first one, but this album surprised me. I know its effectively a covers album, but they're not bad covers and I enjoyed listening to this album. I would probably give this one a 3.5/5 if I could, but because I enjoyed it (and enjoyed it significantly more than the first one I heard during this experience) I'll round up to a 4/5.

They obviously get better and more interesting, but this is still quite an enjoyable collection. 3.5/5

I liked it I was on the cusp of 3 stars but gave it a bump because it had modern Rolling Stones elements

Didn’t realize they covered so much bluesy stuff when they first started

I think I have been pretty bored with the Stones albums on this list so far, but I really liked this one!

A lot of covers but that seems typical of early British rock bands. Not the worst Stones' album by any stretch.

Still sounds great!

Mõnus Rock'n'Roll kuulamine. Selline "back to fundamentals" tunne ja siin pole ühtegi halba lugu, siin on isegi väga mitu suurepärast lugu. Aga album koosneb enamjaolt tegelikult kaveritest, vaid 3 lugu on bändi (või Jagger-Richards duo) kirjutatud. Ehk plaadil jääb vajaka artisti enda väljendusest ja see tõmbab hinnangut suts alla.

Stones! 3.75/5

I mean… how to rate this? I love the Stones and I love the blues…so clearly I enjoy the heck out of this album… but these songs don’t really belong to them. This should not be on the list. Where the heck is Some Girls???!

I get why it's on the list being a debut and all, but the Stones didn't write enough of the album to earn more than a 4.

Very bluesy

Mick Jagger sounds incredible here, and it is obvious this album set them up for success

Standout Songs: Route 66 i Just Want To Make Love To You Mona (I Need You Baby) Carol Can I Get A Witness

I enjoyed this. Bluesy rock that is pretty easy listening. 4/5

Early Stones, most people have never heard this stuff. Shows a band that has a future. A big blues influence, and they nail it.

Great album. I was nervous with early Rolling Stones, but the blues shows through in the album. Love it

I found it interesting that Decca had the Stones do a "proof of concept" album of covers before turning them loose to record their own stuff. There's nothing wrong with this -- these are *good* cover tunes. Their playing is the usual tight as hell, Charlie-follows-Keith bluesy stuff. But is it indispensible? Not really, no.

The best Rolling Stones album!!! Focused, passionate and played from the heart. So good, and I was completely unfamiliar with it. No notes as they say.

Solid. Very different from their later sound

Listens: 2.5 Standout Tracks: Mona (I Need You Baby), Now I've Got A Witness, Can I Get A Witness This is my second Rolling Stones album and I am still thrown off by how tame this is, give what my understanding and expectations were from the Rolling Stones. Granted, this is their debut album and at least a few songs are covers of other artists. That being said, I still expected the rock to be a little harder and less blues. All that being said, this is still a great album. Route 66 is a great upbeat opener, and the album is just full of lively, interesting tracks. Subsequent listens will surely uncover more interesting aspects of the music.

I didn't knew it. Awesome!

Pretty good debut album right here. I get that the Stones are wearing their influences on their sleeve and not venturing too far beyond but they’re showing enough personality here and they absolutely thrive in the horny bluesy, garage rock sound and I’m down with this album. Also, does anyone else think of Black Sabbath’s-Laguna Sunrise on the opening guitar on Tell Me? Both great songs. This was good simple fun. 4 stars

What a debut! Lots of covers.

Great debut from the Stones.

Rock'n'Roll

Lots of covers, or where they the originals? A nice listen none the less.

Crazy how an album of American Blues and R&B covers could be the early beginnings for one of the world's biggest Rock bands. I actually think this album really gives depth to who the Stones are, way back in the early days they were still pursuing this sound that was uniquely theirs, and somehow they sold it to the masses. Definitely not my favourite Rolling Stones Albums but certainly worth a listen.

This is nearly unrecognizable as the Stones, with their distinctive, ballsy brand of blues rock’n’roll and some epic and classic original songs later in the ‘60s and on. This debut album sounds straight out of the ‘50s - Buddy Holly by way of the Delta. Tidy tunes with a pop sensibility and just a hint of the swagger and lewdness to come from Jagger. Still, those sounds are great. The fledgling Stones - not yet their own artistic force - do right by this collection. It’s a fun listen.

In spite it being entirely covers, I still have a good time listening to this

- Even on this collection of mostly covers, the discerning ear can hear the greatness to come. There is a slinkiness to the band that shows, setting them apart from other bands covering blues songs at the time. Interestingly enough, not every track exhibits this and there some back to back tracks that really show the contrast. It's not a perfect record by any means but it's pretty good and they get one star just for "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)". -

This album was actually really good! I love the 60s vibes and feels.

Very good, i love a shorter album and 12 tracks in 32 minutes sure is. I don’t think any of the songs beat the opener route 66 but i’m open to another listen

Not the “famous” Stones, but the “new” Stones releasing a lot of covers as Studios were want to do back then. Still that distinctive sound is there waiting to explode on the scene.

The more I listen to the Rolling Stones the less I consider them to be a hard rock band

I can see how these lads would have been a big hit in the day. Just a good rollicking fun time.

8/10 honestly, surprised I didn’t like this as much as the later stuff but still a pretty great album regardless

This is another album that sounds dated to me. They put on a good performance throughout, though - great energy.

love early stones

solid! i liked a lot.

I will never argue with any Rolling Stones album on this list. You can already hear the edge in these blues songs that separate them (favorably in my opinion) from the Beatles. They do right by the cover songs here, including Honest I Do, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Little by Little and Carol. Even the original, Tell Me, is a good representation of young songwriting where Jagger/Richards are clearly feeling their way around how to write a song. This is not the Stones best work (obviously) and this isn't really an album that best shows how they combine Chicago blues with their own sound from songs they have written. I think that would be Aftermath, which is an album that is in this book as well. This album is in the book based primarily on the fact it was the Stones first album and this book also included the first album by the Beatles. It's sort of a "thing" this book does. I enjoyed the album and I love the Stones. I cannot give the album five stars, simply because I do not think this is the best representation of the Stones. Not sure it should be in the book, other than for the reason this was their first album and the world's first exposure to the Stones.

Historically very interesting which is why it’s on the list. Better than the Beatles two openers.

Their debut album is so different than any of their other stuff. Makes me think of The Beatles initial releases. Very poppy. Great stuff. Not the Rolling Stones I dig but I know of this album

A great debut full of rock classics. Maybe not my favourite listen RS album but still a cracking listen

Rock n roll!! Unos Rolling Stones que desde el principio suenan a ellos. 7/10

I think this is a 3.5, but I'll round up due to the impact and early rock-and-roll history. Ultimately, though, it doesn't stand up to many other things that came out in 64 and 65 such as the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Zombies.

Hard to imagine they were able to release an album of almost entirely covers as their first major record. Their interpretations of American black music gave those songs new life and visibility though and proved that they could deliver great rock and roll in the years to follow.

Pretty good

The best at it

Estaban créditos pero son lo rolinn. Divertido

the stones are rolling

Although the Beatles unquestionably came out on top, I can see why the Stones were seen as rivals. Some of this is derivative of their mop-topped rivals, but definitely signs that they’d end up being the best at what they do.

Yeah it's covers, but it was fun.

Great to hear the origins of the band with this one. This is the music that they drew their inspiration from, and hearing them do authentic and underproduced covers of great blues music highlights the bands musicianship.

drei bis vier

Fun music. A side of the Stones I hadn't heard before. Lots of "Rolling Stones covering standards" music, but well owrht listening to.

This is their first album and they open with a cover? That's an interesting decision. "Route 66" is a fantastic song, and they do a good job with it. I like Chuck Berry's version more, and I'm sure they were listening to it before recording their own. Is this all going to be covers? "I Just Want to Make Love to You" is another cover of a Muddy Water's song. It is once again, pretty good. I'm now on the album's Wikipedia page and seeing they are basically all covers - nine out of the twelve. "Honest I Do" is smooth. I like the country-blues-y guitar. "Now I've Got A Witness" sounds like "My Shiny Teeth and Me" by Chip Skylark. Fun song. "Carol" is another Chuck Berry song. This song sounds exactly like "Johnny B-Goode", those two are basically the same song. This album was really good. I don't feel like I can give an album consisting of 75% covers an equivalent score to an original album I enjoyed equally. 8/10, I'd give it a 9 if they wrote the songs themselves.

I still have Walkin The Dog stuck in my head.

actually pretty great stuff

I enjoyed this album. Not sure if some songs were covers or not, but good stuff.

Seems to be a polarizing album based on it being covers. That shouldn’t take away by how well done it is.

The recording is pretty basic - Mick's vocal level seems to have been set at random - most of the songs are covers of US acts (and the original ones aren't much cop)... But it succeeds in one way : I had a great time listening to it.

Bunch of covers that aren't as amazing as the original but are still good songs. Most of the other Rolling Stones albums are better than this... for sure does not need to be on a 1001 albums list but I'm not mad at it.

Very early Stones, but features the GREAT "Tell Me!"

i liked it, great chuck berry cover to open

It's a great debut album, but they're going to get so much better

What a debut! While the cast majority are covers, this album shows the spark of what is to come.

Very good debut, if a bit short 4/5

Great album

They got better with their own songs, but still pretty good here

point1.

This is gonna be interesting

If I didn't know better I would've thought this was an experimental beach boys album! It's both nostalgic and cutting edge

> The Beatles

Produce, cómo no: Andrew Loog Oldham. La clave, como mil veces se ha dicho pero pocos han igualado, es coger la original y acelerarla, añadirle chulería, actitud y sobre todo mucho mojo. I Just Want to Make Love to You es un prodigio, Carol otro. Tell me, no por sencilla es un tema menor. Lógicamente no está a la altura de sus posteriores obras maestras, pero al igual que el debut de los Beatles, aquí está todo y además funciona como un reloj más de 60 años después. Imprescindible.

England's newest hitmakers may not look like the kind you'd want to take home to Mother but they've got the tunes and enough aplomb to keep the radio loud and buzzing. But, in all seriousness, while The Rolling Stones were a long way away from the music they'll be associated with, this is still a sharp collection of rhythm and blues fandom and indebtedness delivered with the enthusiasm and respect that's required. Once they get their hands warmed up for songs of their own, they will be unstoppable. Favorites: Route 66, I Just Want to Make Love to You, Mona (I Need You Baby), I'm a King Bee, Carol, Tell Me (You're Coming Back), Can I Get a Witness.

Putting this on and walking around changes the whole vibe in a good way. Not really my ~vibe~ but I liked it

So great to listen to

They rolled that stone so fast

Some consider this the greatest debut album ever. It's chock full of familair covers but shows where the band was headed once they got free rein to put their own songs on vinyl for the masses. Impact, influence, hits, staying power and popularity, it has the credentials for sure. I prefer the later, dirtier, more creative stuff from their heyday. I'd never heard their versions of "Honest I Do" or "Walk The Dog" which were both good. Not sure about a teenage Brit white kid doing "King Bee" but it was entertaining just the same. Intro to what is likely the greatest & most decorated rock band to ever grace the planet. Understanding their transition from covers to originals would be more impactful I think but I enjoyed this historical lesson on their origins. Every song is done well and with respect so I can give this 4 stars.

In the early 60s, Black American music wasn't getting much recognition. Until some Robert Johnson records got a reissue in the UK, the interest in American Blues was nonexistent… until some London 'lads' started mimicking and covering, and electrifying… The real British Invasion happened when the Stones, and Clapton, and Beck and more retaught us our heritage. 4/5

At face value sounds like a standard 60s rock album but has the foundations of The Rolling Stones signature sound

I have never listened to this Stones album and it was interesting.

This is great. WikiTIL: Led Zeppelin could learn from their songwriting credit ethic

An absolute classic.

It's really just a bunch of lads that got together to cover late 50's, early 60's, blues rock classics. It's rough and raw and, damn, is it good. If they can come up with some original music, I think they have a real chance of making a name for themselves.

It’s no Let It Bleed but a solid 4 nonetheless.

Classic Stones, their sound is great on this album and hard to discern the bluesy differences between the Stones and Beatles this early

Solid album of Blues Rock covers

Excellent album of blues rock and an awesome first album from the Rolling Stones. Mostly covers with a few originals mixed in. I've never heard this before but it’s great front to back. I'm looking forward to putting this on again. Great energy.

Rating: 8/10 A great collection of blues covers that sets the blueprint for the Stones' sound.

Really good and interesting

Enjoyable

Early Stones! "Tell me" was the stand out for me.

It's been interesting to get early albums by the Beatles and the Stones back to back. I marked the Beatles down for half the album being covers, but the reality was it was the covers just being a bit... whisper it... average. I found this mostly covers album much more enjoyable. Jagger's vocals, and the energy of the performances, plus a better choice of songs channeling their love of American R&B makes this much more of an essential album for me. The Beatles plodding their way through Please Mr Postman just can't hold up to the likes of Not Fade Away and I Just Want To Make Love to You just a year later.

Great album. 4.3/5

It was really good to hear the first Stones album and then think about their uber-famous songs and how much they have changed over the years. I liked the bluesy vibe to this one.

4.0 3x

Better than I expected

Great musicianship

The beginning of an era but nothing ridiculously special about this album.

Lots of blues with lots of covers. I like it! It's a fun album.

fun, I wasnt familiar with their earlier work, its different but i really enjoyed it

My third stones album in as many months... This is my favourite yet, raw and bluesy. I have found some of their stuff a bit too HONKY TONKY and not really my thing, this was decent though!

I wasn't too excited going into this one, because of the low reviews and my general feelings towards The Rolling Stones I actually really prefered this album to their other stuff!!! I knew a lot of the songs, I enjoyed their covers, and I thought the sound suited them. It did sound a bit Beatles-ish at times but that's why I liked it! A very pleasant surprise 4 ⭐️

A tribute album to the greats of the blues. Of course their covers just aren’t quite the same but it’s impressive nonetheless - and with a British twist. For a debut album in 1964 it’s aged pretty brilliantly.

Na pewno gdy ten album wychodził to musiało być niesamowite, ale tą wyjątkowość rozumiem, ale nie czuję w muzyce. Daję 4 za insane solówkę na harmonijce w "little something little" (??).

A really good album that tells you where the Stones are headed. 4 stars or B+.

Not bad, old Stones.

fun listen... they kicked so much more ass than the beatles in this era

Classic rock. Very much a bluesy rock vibe. Simple but done well.

It's a classic - I prefer the UK version with Not Fade Away.

Rhythm & Blues covers with a couple of original compositions - this group shows promise and could go far

I hadn’t listened to this one previously. I can see why they then grew from here. You always hear about the stones roots in blues etc. very evident in this recording.

The Stones aren’t in their final form but I can see how this must’ve riled up the Beatles fans and introduced them to some blues.

Sick album. Route 66 is awesome. Fun listen. This sounds like young rolling stones and they are rockin. 4 stars

Beach rocky blues! Cool to listen to the first Stones album. Crazy that they are still alive and motoring 60 years later. Enjoyed this more than I expected cause I'm not a huge Stoner.

Thought o was listening to Lee hooker but lo and behold it's the rolling stones plundering. But oddly original and well crafted. 4 stars.

I mean it's the rolling stones! Good album

I think it's a really important album from a historical perspective, as it's one of the albums that, while not as good as the original versions of these songs, introduced them to an audience that wouldn't have known about these songs at the time and was part of the launching pad for what has become modern music. As for how enjoyable it actually is to listen to now, I'd say it's about a 3, but the historical importance brings it up to a 4. I get why it's on the list, but it makes little sense out of context of it's time for why it's on the list.

I'm giving this a four largely because it is a white British band repackaging American blues in a high quality way for a worldwide audience. It's a mystery to me -- other than flat out racism -- as to why the blues greats weren't appreciated in the USA in the 50s and 60s... they are now revered, as they should be.

Favourite song - Carol

Just like what I said for the yardbirds: this has a lot of very palatable (if slightly forgettable) blues rock. Easy listening.

Jaunty jangly Stones. I prefer the more bluesy souly tracks. Love a half hour album. Top tracks: I’m a king bee (kinda sexy) Walkin the Dog (vibes), You Can Make it if you try (more bluesy)

Favorite Track: King Bee

Je hoort het potentieel van de band, gewoon echt lekkere muziek, weinig minpunten te bedenken, behalve dat er maar 1 origineel nummer op staat.

We all start somewhere.

Some really good R&B on this.

Apparently these were all covers? They did a pretty good job I gotta say, this was great. Stand-out: Mona (I Need You Baby), Tell Me

Fun early Rolling Stones

A pretty strong debut mostly of the live show with one jagger Richard and Nanker Phelge tracks. The stones were probably the best of the early British blues bands - maybe early Fleetwood Mac were the rivals. I know the Irish contingent are screaming Rory but he’s just a bit later. None the less the blues are authentic and the band will go on to be much much more than this debut suggests. They would transcend blues without leaving it completely behind.

The Rolling Stones by The Rolling Stones This is not a review. NON! I’m coming out of anaesthetic and not allowed to do anything important. So this. Are your wondering Who in Hell the Rolling Stones Are and what is going on? Yes - this album is (maybe) OK as a taster of their early R&B covers. Who knew, right? Fun toe tapping RB twanging fun guitar. A delight. But its ALL covers. Practice. Only listen all the way if you want to be swatty for the exam. But they got SO much better and grown up - their attitude was just building. Later is So much. Better. After much mucking - the 60s was a period of exploration, despite themselves and the Beatles rivalry, they did get it right in the end. So. FOR A GOOD TIME - SKIP THIS ALBUM and go straight to ONE OF THESE 3. They are the lux, the sound that makes you scrunch your face and yell YEAH and dance and jive. Beggars Banquet (1968) Exile on Main Street (1972) Sticky Fingers (1971) Meanwhile Footnotes for Young People: There weren't enough songs to go around in the 50s and 60s. Covers were so accepted, sometimes there would be 3 versions of the same song in the pop charts. Boring but true. The Stones first 4 albums are basically all covers. The final track, “Walk the Dog” was written by a man named Rufus. Yes, Woof! It was his surprise number 1 hit. And has been covered at least 30 times. The lyrics euphemistically mean anything, right? And he probably retired on the royalties. So write poetry that lasts kids, don't do onlyfans with backup insta feeder accounts. Until these guys came along, StoneD was another word for Drunk and took decades to only mean drug affected. Their song "Stoned" - was actually The Roling STones first original composition to get recorded (1963 - as a B side to the single "I Wanna Be Your Man" ) As for the term, it was coined by Jack Kerouac eg. ( 1951) Kerouac On the Road (The Original Scroll) (2007): "I had finished the wine [...] and I was proper stoned." also see Kerouac (letter 8 Jan 1951) : "I stood completely stoned on the sidewalk in unbelievable and heavenly rapture." If you're under 30 - go at least find out who Karouac was and how he wrote a whole book on a single piece of paper. And Beat Poets. Before that, it meant to be killed by stoning like in the Bible, or to have your stones (bollocks) cut off as punishment. The rolling stones probably refers to a cliche, and folk music and the 60s was the time for cliches. We are not all cliches. 7. Nevertheless the lyrics of “stoned” by The Rolling Stones suggest an attenuated sense of space or location, seeking re-orientation, then a rapid change of state to one of pleasant euphoria, suggesting a fast acting drug: "Stoned | Out of my mind| Here I go | Ah, yeah | Where am I at? |Ah-ah-ah | Yeah, yeah ". 8 naturally, later the fun police caught on to the meaning. The single was withdrawn. So they changed the song name to “Stones”. Which confuses things, especially due to the nickname the Rolling Stoned. 8 no 9!. For a trivial taste of how very far off track the Stones got before refinding their roots again. Listen to “In another land” which is soooo baaaad and includes a high quality recording of Bill Wyman snoring for 20 seconds. My review. This - My first listen to the particular early record, and I'd agree that this first album will surprise anyone under 50 - it was so new to UK and Europe for the times, all these thumping American R&B covers - not at all what we thought of if we got to know the superstar Stones in 80s & 90s. But some honesty - their first 6 or so albums were just covers. They sound cool. But its also disappointing to discover at first (see above) I think it wasn't until Beggars Banquet (4 years later) that albums were mostly new material and their own sound was more or less settled. And then they were standing tall doing something honest. And full throated. HERE they were young and finding their way. They even spent at least 2 or 3 albums outright copying the Beetles (shock, intake of breath!) and trying to do psychedelic music to their style (which pissed people off - they even ripped off the Sgt Peppers cover and it wasnt ironically ), and there are many Beatles songs they recorded too. Whah? And so, this was England in the 1960s. It cant be overstated how important, different and even shocking this music, content and themes were. It would have created quite a fuss and discussion, bringing rhythm and blues to the masses - it was louder and faster and compared to the madrigals your parents hummed to, this was quite the toe tapping stuff (not to mention race and morals. Don't mention sex darling its crude ) ! That said, which version of this album am I supposed to listen to? A I cant find the UK version B “England’s Newest Hitmakers” - 1964 (US release) - does the job C the re-released tracks “The Rolling Stones, Now!” ? But the quality of recording is variable. By that I mean shit. Like a sunbaked transistor AM radio up too loud. But thats a certain sound too, right? "Roll Over Beethoven" - may have gone down like Michael J Fox playing guitar at the ball (in the Johnny be Good moment in Back to the Future). Telling the world classical is over and rock n roll / or rhythm & blues is in - it did it literally and figuratively. Some songs sound like they were recorded in a barn with tin microphone, buts that the 60.s... Off to the pub with my newly acquired Brummie accent, from the last crappy record ont he list./

Good album. This is solid blues rock from early Stones. I can't rate it too high given mostly covers, but it's got really solid sound. ****

From what I'd heard on the radio from the stones, I was expecting some rusty boomer rock that feels overplayed even on first listen. Thankfully, that unfair expectation was not met, and instead I met a very solid, dynamic album. There's a lot of interesting influences at work in most songs, and even between songs, there was always an element of surprise lurking for me. Given that this is their debut, it's an incredible one at that. I greatly appreciate this album, and even though I might not listen to it as much as my other fours, I feel it's really earned it altogether.

Young British dudes covering American Blues? I’m down.

Route 66 is a fun bop. I Just Wanna Make Love to You is a fun and kinda progressive song honestly. Honest I Do is kind of boring. I will have to see if the trend is that their more fast paced songs tend to be more interesting/fun. Cool harmonica though. I love a harmonica solo. Mona is such an interesting song. I find the instrumentation very unique. Lyrics were much simpler back then, but the instrumentation of songs seems overall more...complex. Another harmonica focused song. Little by Little has such a fun beat. These songs almost seem country western or...something. Twangy. But in a fun way. I'm a King Bee is bluesy and nice. Real vibes there. And sexy ;) Carol is another bop honestly. Just such fun old time rock beats. Tell Me is boring and so repetitive. I just feel like all their slower songs are very meh. They really succeed with the faster beats, and fun songs. You Can Make It If You Try is where the album starts falling off for me. Walking the Dog was a bit more fun to end the album on. Overall pretty good. :)

Massively satisfying rock n roll track on RS debut. Lot of covers though. Ageless.

Classical roxk loved the vibe

"The Rolling Stones" is the debut studio album by English rock band the Rolling Stones. "The Rolling Stones" was released in the UK by Decca Records and "England's Newest Hit Makers" was released in US by London Records and has slightly different track listing including their cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away." The album was recorded at Recent Sound in London and was produced by then-managers Eric Easton and Andrew Loog Oldham. The album is mostly cover songs and reflects the Stones' love for R&B songs. Commercially, it hit #1 in the UK and #11 in the US. The album begins with a cover of songwriter Bobby Troup's "Route 66." This is a more bluesy version. It has a groove. Nice rhythm and lead guitars. They slow it down on Jimmy Reed's "Honest I Do." Nice guitar chords again. A prominent bass and we get a Mick Jagger harmonica jam. "Little By Little" is a song written by Nanker Phelge and Phil Spector. Who is Nanker Phelge you ask? That was a moniker for the Rolling Stones. A bluesy beat and a piano. Jagger on Harmonica and a great guitar solo by Keith Richards. Phil Spector was given co-credit due its similarity to the song "Shame, Shame, Shame." The band comes out a rockin' on their cover of Chuck Berry's "Carol." A searing guitar open. This seems pretty true to the original. The only attributed song to the Jagger/Richards team is "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)" and it's my favorite song on the album. It's a ballad with Brian Jones on electric guitar and Richards on a 12-string acoustic guitar. Jagger is on tambourine and we get the classic Richards' backing vocals. The Stones give a bluesy interpretation on most of these covers. And, these covers include various blues and pop songs. The one thing that stands out is that this is a very tight band. There are signs of the future Stones with the Jagger sneer on "I'm a King Bee," Richards and Jones' guitar solos and playing and that down-and-dirty sound. This is a good time capsule of the start to one of the biggest rock bands.

What's that sound? Why it's the sound of cultural appropriation! I ended up spending some time reading up on the history of The Rolling Stones and basically they ripped off R&B to become one of the biggest bands in the world (although at least they credited their sources, unlike some British acts [cough! Led Zeppelin! cough!]). Let's acknowledge that they end up writing some pretty amazing songs in their own right later on, but this album is mostly covers that don't measure up to the originals (I listened to all the originals, plus a couple of additional versions - for example, their Route 66 is based on the Chuck Berry version (with the Stones speeding it up) and not the original Nat King Cole version). So, what made them so much bigger than the acts they covered? Hmm, I wonder. Very little of this album hints at the Stones' later originality. The only exception is the original "Tell Me (You're Coming Back)" which sounds like The Rolling Stones, even if it's still pretty grounded in 50s rock n' roll stylings. I get that this album is a big deal because it's the Stones' debut, but if this was all they did I'm not sure it would have been on the list - the album is clearly in the list for historical significance, not because of its own quality and originality. I'll give it a 4 to acknowledge its importance, and certainly every track is good, but none of it makes me say that I should be listening to this band instead of the artists they were covering.

Really solid debut. Show cases the Stones’s original influence very well

I’ve only listened to this record for the first time in the last year. It’s weird to think a debut album had so many cover songs. It doesn’t quite sound like The Rolling Stones I know yet. Good album!!

I very much enjoy bluesy Stones. They'll always be one of my all-time favorite bands.

This was pretty good. Later Rolling Stones is better, but ya gotta start somewhere. And they started out pretty damned good as it was.

A strange window into the band and seeing them more influenced than influencing. Solid songs throughout.

Not my favourite Stones album, or even in my top five, but it's still very good.

Google has the wrong tracklist, use Wikipedia

great stones album great sound and vocals

CLASSICO

i didn't know the rolling stones covered route 66! thats so cool!

Another Iconic British band. What can you say about The Stones. They go on forever. Great band, great music.

Enjoyed

Good old rock. Ever a classic . Not quite my music though

It's a lot of fun. But it's also a lot of covers which is unfortunate. I understand why it's on the list, though. The energy and musicality that makes the Stones the Stones is here in double measure and these covers lit the fire that would catapult Micky and the boys to the heights of Roll-n-Roll godhood.

Bluesy Stones. 4/5

Short but great!

Agradou-me surpreendentemente as versões de blues.

It's the Rolling Stones, how bad can it be?

classic

At the height of the British Invasion, the age old debate The Beatles or The Rolling Stones was under full effect. This leaving The Rolling Stones to possibly be the greatest rock band to ever grace the stage. Perfectly capturing the sound and rhythm of American Blues music, the Stones, come out strong in their 1964 Debut Album. 🥇Route 66 🥈Mona (I need you baby) 🥉Little By Little HM: Carol

Really good! Route 66 and Mona are my favourite tracks on this.

This was short sweet and fun! I like a little twist music.

Significantly better than I’d expected. Will playlist some.

I would give this a 3.5, but for this I’ll give it a 4 just because it’s quite a diverse album. Early blues-inspired RS is still RS.

it's a lot of elvis vibes + more guitar+drums-y versions of songs I've heard before -- not exactly interesting but not exactly dull either. being so fr I've been listening to lots of beach boys and beatles, so the crunchier, less layered & harmonies -type sound the rolling stones made was def unexpected. but \"tell me\" has some layers, though they're not nearly as clean as beach boys/beatles also: I've never really listened to the rolling stones before, but I was under the impression they were a rock band like the who, so this r&b sound was very unexpected too? I mean there's some rock-type sounds but it's definitely so much more bluesy 5/7

Another absolute banging banger of a group frfrfr my first concert in 2005 with my grandparents:) raised on these ppls music omg but this isn’t their best album for me are they gonna be here again whaaat I like no2 I like out of our heads I like the 70s/80s goodness

Good album. I like the different touches with genres

Also in the running for "Greatest Debut Album." Right out of the gate, The Stones established themselves as a top-drawer cover band. Not just wearing their influences on their sleeves, they wore them on their faces. Behind that mask was the more rough-hewn answer to the innocence of The Beatles. Street wise and lean, The Stones didn't just want to hold your hand, they wanted more... much more. Under the leadership of Brian Jones, they weren't afraid to broadcast their admiration for "Black Music." This made them infinitely more badass (and frightening) than their contemporaries who shied away from the direct connection. Four and one-half stars. Only knocked down a half-star because I enjoy their late-60's, early 70's so much more.

This was really good. Most of it was classic R&B with a blues sound. I give this 4 stars.

That whole Beatles vs. Rolling Stones thing makes a lot more sense when you look at early albums like this where they’re both doing a lot of covers. Team Beatles all the way, but this was a decent listen

This is why I use this app. Great blues record. I gotta call myself a Stones fan now.

Pretty decent blues rock record from the early 60s that consists of mostly cover songs. They would go on to make better albums than this but it serves as a good introduction to the band.

Bluesy and good.

Classicp

Very different to their later work - more blues & soul than rock n roll - but still pretty good. No real hint of the money making juggernaut they would become, and barely any songs they wrote themselves, but evocative of the time and place, and highly enjoyable

Classic. How come it's 60 next year?

great classic rock

Still classic. I wonder if everybody got paid for the rights to those blues songs?

Ah the Stones' debut, nearly 60 years old now. Certainly sounds fresh and their youth (as strange as it is to imagine) shines through. Great 60s rock

This was a great album from the Rolling Stones, as well as their debut album. There was a lot of great tracks here, especially for fans of old school bluesy, rock. I highly recommend! Favorite Song(s): "Route 66", "I Just Want To Make Love To You", "Mona", "Carol", "Walking The Dog"

Killer Baaaaay Baybeeeeee

There is a lot of old Delta Blues type of songs on here mixed with some that clearly have a Chuck Berry influence. There are a bunch of good songs, but I don't think it's their best work. They hadn't come into their own yet.

Stronger tracks and the beginning and end, a couple of weaker tracks in the middle, overall solid debut.

Just great classic rock and roll

The album that launch one of the greatest band of all times First of all its safe to say that this is a cover album, with only 1 Jagger/Richard composition, with moslty blues, ol’ rock n roll and RNB cover. Its perfecly encapsulate the early 60’s british blues boom, and they did the cover very well. I would say that if it wasn’t the Stones first album we woulnd’t talking about it here, like its not a particularly incredible or original reccord, we all know how good the stones are going to become a few years later, but its their first step so there is a symbol in this album. The groovy I just wanna make love to you (Willie Dixon), the instrumental now i’ve got a witness ( by Nanker Phelge wich is a nickname for the band, that they use during those years), Carol (Chuck Berry) and Tell me (their only credited song on this album) are all my favorite songs of this reccord. Overall is a good, but not a great RNB-Blues Rock album, the Stones first show us their talent and groove, but its not enough to tell yet how great they are.
