Reviews (page 4 of 8)

Ok, so this is a good example of music I should hear before I die. A rare example. I didn't really like most of it, but it was not offensive and it was interesting. I'm not going to come back to this, but I respect it. Thank you.

Noise rock. Like the old saw about jazz, I am not ever sure if it is good. How do they know when they are done? These guys are interesting enough - locked in tight drums and bass with real riffs, and some beats and structure. I respect instrument mods, and this guy does a cello tuned bass with a Banjo string! Anyway, its not without talent, but like Mark Rothko or something - I could probably do this.

Lightning bolt Kind of a unique take on noise rock. It’s cool and would really love it if these noisey grooves were like weird 30 second outros to a good song but it’s pretty challenging to listen to a full album of this. Cool how unconventional but not random it is. Pretty cool that it’s just a duo-and they found each other and wanted to commit to this super weird music and found an audience for it. Tough to rate, I’m giving a 3 because I like it better than a lot of the other stuff I’ve rated 2 recently 3

A pity I didn't discover these guys at a younger age, as I probably would have been more open to the absolute insanity these guys bring in my teenage years. Then again, for my eardrums' sake, maybe it's for the best I didn't! While I don't see myself revisiting this one for a long time (if ever) I have to respect the sheer chaos. The groove feels like it's going in 10 different directions at any given time, but it somehow manages to hold on by a thread throughout

Just noise. Sometimes great, sometimes terrible. Can’t decide how I feel about this one.

noise rock for the sake of noise. Not to everyone's taste, but enjoyable under the proper conditions.

Glad they realized 41 minutes was the perfect length for this and didn't drag it out. Some dope sections throughout this.

didnt like it as much as i thought i would tbh

This album sure lets you know what you are in for from the get go. Also the title and album art are perfect. For me the music is hit or miss, a little less hit than miss I'd say. Fave track: Dracula Mountain, good stuff.

Primer acercamiento a Lightning Bolt. FAVTRAXS: Assassins, Dracula Mountain, 2 Towers, On Fire LEASTFAV: Wonderful Rainbow

Kind of noisy - it was okay, but by the end it was dragging a bit.

Listened to this 2 times because I forgot to write the review the first time around The first time around I listened to the first half as I was cooking and I thought it was pretty good. A bit later I had a headache and decided to listen to the latter half and thought it was one of the worst things I had heard. Almost gave it a 1 as a result. Relistened to the whole album now in a neutral state and I kinda like it more than before, almost to the point where I could see myself giving it a 4. Not quite, I could appreciate it

Utter insanity. Not just the music itself, but that so many chaotic and clashing elements were brought together to create something that sounds kind of good. I did not expect to like this album based on its Wikipedia description as "noise rock", but man, this is some good stuff (considering the genre). Vibrant, colourful, wall-of-sound-ish. Interesting how every track has a consistent rhythm, but tries to trick you into thinking otherwise with its ridiculously complex polyrhythm overlays - particularly in the drums. But all the instruments - drums, guitar, and bass - are performed frenetically yet masterfully. It must be exhilarating to perform this live. The mixing definitely gives off a raw, live-show feel. Now for the cons. It is absolutely not danceable or foot-tap-worthy. Nothing about this music screams "catchy". The three main instruments seem to be going out of their way to play the least radio-friendly riffs or beats possible, and gosh darnit, they stick with it. And that's not a good thing. 30,000 Monkies and Duel in the Deep are the most obviously offending tracks here, but most of them are like this. A bit like free jazz in this way, though a little more accessible. Also, each individual track is very, very repetitive, with little in the way of structure. That being said: Assassins is freaking amazing. Good job blokes, you sold me. Somewhat. 3/5 Key tracks: Assassins, Dracula Mountain, Crown of Storms

Þetta eru bara læti og ég fíla það!

Not really my thing but I thought this was done well! I enjoyed what this was doing for the most part. Fun noise. Party noise.

3.5★. Grew on my immensely on a second listen. Assassins/Dracula Mountain/2 Towers is peak.

Lovely noise. Exhilarating or exhausting depending on you current mood, often both at once. Will I listen again? Probably not.

Never heard of this album or group, but I feel like I've seen it around before on lists of great albums, or maybe some random topsters or something. Some really nice songs in the first few, it sounds like some really strong, melodic metal riffs working their hardest to burst through a wall of fuzz and noise. It's a cool effect, unfortunately the album got a little same-y and I didn't find as much enjoyment after the first half. But it's a decent album, I appreciate the inclusion for sure. Always down for something different. Favorite tracks: Assassins, Dracula Mountain, 2 Towers. Album art: Again, looks extremely familiar. A rainbow of sorts poking out over the top of this messy image of grey doodles. Perfectly represents how I felt about the sound of the music: just flashes of bright, powerful rock peeking through all the noise. From this cover I was expecting something more indie rock, like Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective, or maybe even Avalanches. Regardless, really cool and memorable cover art. 3/5

I bet this isn’t rated too well but I really liked this. Just locking in with the rhythm section had my head nodding and bumping with the wall of noise (3.5/5)

Not sure why this transfixed me, but it was very hypnotic and I love the concept of the band. They say you need to see them live, but that sounds exhausting. Probably a 3.5, but dropping for monotony to:

I was not in the mood for it. Typically something I'd enjoy

Not pleasent but engaging. I get what this is trying to do and I think its mostly successful. I dont think that this experiment works best as an album but I think it works and its emotional and resonant.

Raw noise rock that is better than it should be. It’s a loud mess but somehow it all works. This is not a taking it easy album, and honestly I think it’s too much even for a workout, but if you listen to it maybe one song at a time with space in between it’s pretty great. I’m not really a fan of the genre but I’ve seen a few noise bands live and the energy is through the roof. I bet these guys were fun as hell live. “Crown of Storms” and “Dracula Mountain” were my faves. I absolutely don’t want to listen to this frequently but I didn’t hate it.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I loved it, but I didn't hate it either. In fact I might listen to it again sometime. Actually, I think it merits a three.

I didn’t hate this?

Interesting but difficult

Wow - big sound for a two-piece band. Got a real kick out this - not going to put it on for the mother in law, but loved hearing what a bass guitar armed with banjo strings and a bunch of pedals could do. Would get a buzz of seeing this live.

Did not know what to expect from an album like this one. I did enjoy it overall, though it’s not quite my cup of tea. Electronic metal? Not boring, and some songs do have melodies to grab onto through the noise. Lyrics might be there somewhere but cannot be parsed. Album cover is cool. Standouts: Assassins, Dracula Mountain, 2 Towers, and Crown of Storms.

Noise rock.

I went into it expecting not to like it, but I was wrong. I found it not only easy to listen to while working, but also enjoyable. Loud, fast, and heavy! 3/5

cool that a duo of just drums and bass can be so loud and noisy but like. this really isn't music i particularly want to listen to

I get the noise thing, but I actually liked this. I think you have to be in the right mood. For me that was angrily working after having a problem with my boss. Wouldn't recommend listening to on a turbulent plane. I forgot I had an MP3 of Assassins from way back when. I think it was a free download from either the band or the label's website. It was common to find free MP3s for indie bands in 2003. If it wasn't that it was a LiveJournal music group I was part of. I only rate it a 3 though, because the last half (or a little more) isn't as good as the first part.

I'm going to be off-trend on this one, but I enjoyed this album. Never heard it or the band before, but it reminds me of The Jesus Lizard or the Black Flag instrumental album "The Process of Weeding Out". Loaded with energy and angst. Can't help but release adrenalin into your veins and lift your heart bit, or perhaps your blood pressure. Some songs are in the 4s, but there are enough that are more noise than rhythm that I'm only getting to the 3. But definitely not a 1 in my book.

I like it, I listened to the whole thing and it is impressive, the only thing I didn't like was the voice, it would be so much better without it.

I don't know what activity and mood fits this album. I know it's out there and on that day it'll get an extra star but this was not Meditation, Focus, Study, Calm 10 Hours like I think I needed.

Never heard of this lot before. Can’t believe it’s just bass & drums causing all this ruckus - and there certainly is a heap of noise involved. And I do mean noise. What’s making the noise on Crown Of Storms? It opens with what sounds like a Keith Emerson synth solo. Just drums & bass? But there’s something ordered about it. It’s not a mess. I quite enjoyed it.

Well, that was a whole bunch of noisy fun! Aggressive and funny and energetic and noisy (did I say 'noisy' yet?) and pretty rock and roll, right up my alley. I think I would really dig this live. It sounds like a bunch of quasi-experimental noise bands I have seen over the years in tiny venues. It has elements of Sonic Youth, Mr Bungle, Battles, Tony Buck, Peril, Party Dozen, elements of 70s prog and 90s industrial (notably, yelling through a megaphone at the back of the mix, plus distortion on EVERYTHING). The drumming is intense and the instruments (mixture of bass, with.... other stuff) have a strange chaotic logic to them. There is enough sense of a riff to keep it from being just random sound. It's most like Party Dozen (an Australian drums/saxophone duo that I really dig; check this out: https://youtu.be/r9w2HXqwIhU?si=z8hdX3oCCIca5lRY). Lightning Bolt is a pretty good example of this type of thing, but it hardly unique and it is hardly influential. Personally, I enjoyed it because it reminds me of a bunch of records I already own that my wife won't let me play when she is at home. But is it an essential album that you must hear before you die? Hell no! WTF was Dimery thinking when he added this to the book? This is a niche record for niche tastes. Seriously.

I was fully prepared to stop listening and rate this as 1 star at the beginning of the second track. But during the third track, something remarkable happened: I started to think this actually doesn't sound to bad. And then, during the fourth track: this actually sounds pretty cool. Although it grew on me in a pretty impressive way, this was still a challenging album to listen to and the 'similar music' that automatically played on Spotify after Wonderful Rainbow was instantly relaxing. I'm glad we got their "most accessible" album. Mixed feelings. Although I'd say that interesting new experiences is the entire point of this whole website.

I decided to approach this in the spirit of that bit of a Sea Power concert when Hamilton get's all freaky with feedback and it all gets a bit too much. A bit along the lines of Apologies to Insect Life and Favours in the Beetroot Fields. In those terms, this is OK. It goes on a bit longer than that bit of a concert though, and lacks the whimsy, wit and style of the rest of what Sea Power do. And the viola. And that's the thing here. I've no doubt this is improved by lacking very much in the way of vocals. I got a Jane's Attraction album yesterday that was just too shouty for me. The same with that god awful Nine Inch Nails album. The lack of vocals in those terms in a Good Thing. But it also means that the wit and style of the vocals on, say, Carrion from that Sea Power gig aren't there either. And, it seems, I like wit and style and that those, along with whimsy of course, are much more important than I ever imagined. So, not dreadful, but all a bit much. Again. And: the cover. Nice colour. But why the fuck would you get the order of colours wrong like that? That sort of does my head in a bit to be honest.

Wacky and fun album

Liked it!

A noise rock band comprising a drummer/vocalist and a bass player. I'm not sure I've heard much noise rock before, but if this is representative of the genre, it is very aptly named. It is a big noise and it rocks. The vocals are heavily distorted (like everything else) and low down in the mix, which makes this all vibe. I'm really not sure why, but I quite liked it. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: 2 Towers Date listened: 04/03/24

Not a huge fan of this one but I found a few songs I liked.

This album took my by surprise, and I really enjoyed it (13-year old me would have loved this shit). Although, it's an exhausting listen. This is probably due to the distinct lack of vocals throughout the album, which doesn't take your focus away from the band of hyperactive lunatics desperately trying to break their instruments. Something tells me that if Trent Reznor had collaborated with these guys they could produce something awesome. "Wonderful Rainbow" is the only track that's in step with the suggestive colourfulness of the cover art. It's like a serial killer politely inviting a child into his van with a bag of candy, only to rip his face off once inside. Absolute chaos. Lightning Bolt's homage to AC/DC, "Crown of Storms", was my favourite song. And while a few of them ran on a bit too long, it was a great album to blast while driving down the M6. Another great band in need of a singer. 👍👍

Some songs were great but others I didn't particularly enjoy. I think a 3 is fair

Noisy and experimental. It's pretty good

Very noisy but it was arranged in a way that I liked it. I even found it a little meditative

This shit is awesome. I don't love all of it and it can get painful on the ears but man it rocks. As someone not experienced in noise rock I'm glad I got to hear this one. Not quite a 4 but pretty close I'd say. Fav songs: - Assassin - 2 Towers - On Fire - Crown of Storms

There are some great moments in this album with impressive technical drumming and catchy bass riffs, and the fuzz is toned so nicely. However, I don’t enjoy noise as a genre so I didn’t care for the album as a whole.

Pretty good for noise rock/electronica. Was unfamiliar with them before. Not sure what the right mood is to listen to this but I’ll probably revisit it again.

good instrumental rock, sometimes stays too angry for me

I didn't hate it.

I don’t know what to say about this one. On one hand, there’s some good stuff I heard throughout, but then again, some parts would be better without the effects, and some are sort of pointless. 3 for neutrality.

Ozzy singing would have helped.

i was kinda into it

I can really appreciate how complex and challenging this music is, and how talented these dudes are. But I still kinda hate it.

Metal sound but arty/indie vibes. Definitely has intriguing moments and textures if a little exhausting/overwhelming in the end.

Well I gave Adele 1* yesterday so credit to the algorithm for turning up something that definitely isn't that. What if you had a hardcore band, got rid of the superfluous high frequency instruments and just cranked up (in every sense) the bass and drums? Stripped down riffs marinaded in terrifying distortion and blasted out furiously. Frenetic noise and untamed feedback played so fast you can feel it slipping out of their hands as they try to wrangle the squal. Having been in bands that wish we could've pulled this off I know it's harder than it sounds. Some cool melodic bits, some almost danceable riffs, some tension/release, a bit of a prog vibe sometimes then some nearly ambient stuff. It's not going into regular rotation, but not everything needs to be 'chillwave folk to study/stare out a rainy train window to.' Favorites: Dracula Mountain, Longstockings, Wonderful Rainbow, Duel into Deep

Some fun noise punk.

This album sounds like how the cover looks. It is true to its form, it is noise rock in all its glory. Whilst there seems to be little rhyme or reason to the entire album other than just being. Best: Dracula Mountain Worst: Assassins

It’s fine. I’m generally interested in this kind of noise rock, but I was working on a frustrating project while listening, and I just wasn’t feeling it.

Not exactly easy listening, but I was intrigued enough to keep listening. I think there's genuine inspiration in these noise-scapes! They're often catchy in ways that are surprising.

Not my cup of tea. Somehow nicely produced and clean for what is to be considered a "noise" band.

Its chaotic, and not always easy to listen to, but its pretty good at its heart. Not 4 stars good, but not bad. 3/5

A challenging listening experience indeed

A lot. Some tracks a could really find a groove in, some were even a bit too abrasive for me. Not shocked this is the lowest rated album I've gotten so far. 3/5

Would you have guessed that these two guys met as students at a private design school? Oh you would, okay. Lightning Bolt presents some cool and bonkers idea on Wonderful Rainbow, but it’s never enough for it to really work for me. It’s not bad - it’s just not anything extraordinary either.

I’m not quite sure why this is on the list… it’s seems to be a lot of noise. Fun to listen to at some points.

Essential Tracks: Crown of Storms (Playlist) Dracula Mountain

Solid spacey study tracks

Well, that was... An experience. Not one I'd willingly repeat, mind you. But I must say, unlike most noise tracks, these songs have something resembling an actual structure which is quite refreshing. In fact, I found my expectations exceeded in many regards. While I didn't enjoy the album exactly, I found myself appreciating it much more than I expected to. There's a lot of interesting stuff going on beneath the noise.

This is somewhat of a tough listen, even for me. I would consider myself pretty desensitized and comfortable with more aggressive and abrasive music. But pretty much from the moment this starts, to the moment it ends, it is an unrelenting ride of some of the most hostile noise rock I've ever heard. In all honesty though, the technical proficiency between the two band members is definitely there. There might be lyrics, but I can't hear them over everything else. Even so, the fact the drummer plays the way he does, and sings at the same time, is very impressive. And the bass guitar is tuned so low and is so distorted and fuzzy, it sounds like a synthesizer on some songs. It is pretty remarkable that any amount of sound or unique melody is actually to be found on this album. Everything sort of blends together, because there aren't really any breaks from one song to the next. And the album mostly has one type of sound. They for sure got that kind of sound down to a science, and perfected the execution of it. But because this is noise rock, the foundations the genre is built upon don't leave much room for variation. I can see there being some interesting experimentation done here, with the addition of other instruments, so I'd be interested to hear their other albums. Although, this isn't actually my first experience with Lightning Bolt, since I listened to Fantasy Empire awhile back on my own accord. And I enjoyed that one slightly more than this. Mostly because I think the band benefits from a more hi-fi sound. The lyrics especially, since Chippendale's voice actually comes through clearly, instead of being buried under the bass. I think Lightning Bolt is an interesting noise rock band. Their album covers are so fun to look at, and perfectly match the absolutely blaring and chaotic train wreck you will find yourself in when diving into one of their records. If you enjoy noise rock or are just in the mood for something really heavy and brutal, this album might be for you. Rating: 6/10

Me han gustado "2 Towers", "On fire", "Crown of storms" y la bestialidad final de "Duel in the deep".

Well, Wikipedia calls this "noise rock" and I can't argue with them. I found this album surprisingly interesting and kept listening to it despite the auditory assault that almost never lets up. It's weirdly funny and fun, yet they also play superbly well. The title track fascinated me. Good for them for taking such an unusual path!

well that was interesting. Some nice musicianship and some raucous noise. i wouldn't listen for pleasure but it is good as background work music

Wonderful Rainbow is the third album by American noise rock band Lightning Bolt. Although the music can be harsh and challenging to listen to, this is considered to be their most accessible album. The noise rock album contains heavy, catchy guitar riffs and frenzied drums. Wonderful Rainbow is critically acclaimed and an ear-lashing good time to listen to! Not my favorite type of rock, but it was a unique album.

bit boring but overall its decent

Intense, pounding noise that actually made me dizzy.

Pretty good; I feel like it would be even better if it was fully instrumental.

Metal instrumental...solid offering for those so inclined

I liked it more than I thought I would.

you know when the rating is low you have a great album on your hands. pretty fun noise rock album, albeit gets a little boring somehow. still a fun listen.

Although it's pure chaos and noise it has some cathartic value for me.

First crack at this on a Tuesday morning I turned off within about 2 minutes with an audible NO. Had more luck second time round and even settled into it in a weird way, but still unsure if noise rock is for me.

The title of this album is Wonderful Rainbow and if you had any preconceived ideas what a rainbow would sound like, throw those theories out the door. This is noise rock, and if you were expecting sweet sounding melodies and beautiful waterfall sounds, turn away because this isn't music for you! My tolerance level is pretty high, so even I can only take this album in bunches, as it gets tedious quickly. Imagine the sound of trying to start your car in the winter with a shitty battery and trying over and over to get it to turn over or the glorious sounds of multiple lawnmowers in your neighborhood driving over branches, metal bits and kids toys, this wouldn't be unlike what's on Wonderful Rainbow. To be honest, it is what it is, artful noise rock playing with wonderful abandon, not worried what the neighbors think and taking it to the max, both in volume and in excess. Either you love it or hate it. Me, I would move out of the neighborhood fast!

Objectively challenging to listen to at length, while also having a degree of sophistication that keeps you listening. A strange combo, worthy of a stressful listen. 2.7

When you see the phrase, "considered to be their most accessible album", you know you're in for a wild ride. The first seconds of 'Assassins' reeled me in and there I remained, riveted, as the distorted explosions pulsed over me for the remainder of the album. Each song is chaos, with moments of clarity, stretched thin over the scaffolds of familiar song structures and lots of repetition. Despite the fact that there isn't anything especially high-minded going on here, this connects with and satisfies a cognitive itch for me. Not sure why, but this is what I needed to hear today.

Well I would say I enjoyed this more than one might expect! It reminds me of a local Brighton band, I think Speak Galactic and I could therefore imagine the red experience of seeing jt live. I like the repetitive thickness of it all and the hard bass riffs.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would have on paper. Was hardcore and had some bangin' beatz.

What an album! Very original, erratic, breaking all rules, not compromising even for a second, pushing boundaries and so on and so on... Two guys with bass and drums and a lot of distortion are creating some anti-pop music. Something that is so unlistenable, that actually becomes interesting, and also something that is so interesting, it becomes unlistenable. It's hard to categorize this album, I like the label "nintendocore", it doesn't really reflect their music, but gets much closer than anything else. I had moments when I really liked this album and I thought this is the next big thing, but also I had moments when I was crying internally, with my ears bleeding profusely. Never had I such an ambivalent feeling toward a record on this list. I think the fairest rating would be 3/5, but that somehow is insulting for this band - it should be either 5, or 1. At least I think that is the goal of Lightning Bolt - to antagonize everyone, that some people will like them just because of the idea. I admire it, but I won't make this turnaround - I will just say - next.

Girlfriend hated it. I enjoyed it. Album cover is great too. Wouldn't listen again too quickly, but did make good music to work to.

This was noisy and chaotic and I didn't exactly hate it, but at least 3 of the songs sound like an engine that won't turn over. Best track: On Fire

Sick music, but a bit too noisy for my tastes. I did enjoy it more than I expected.

This is not an album that fits every occasion and mood, and you know what? That's perfectly okay. This will become my "early morning energy supplier" and "hardcore cardio" album. This was a surprisingly good listen, despite not being my "typical" genre. A few songs I wasn't a huge fan of. I'm giving this a 3, but if a 3.5 existed that would be the perfect fit. It doesn't feel right to give this a 3 based on my initial listen, but a 4 doesn't fit either.

Gøy med litt støyete musikk

My main issue with this is I don’t know if it’s good for what it is. That said, I liked this more than I thought I would. Parts were unpleasant, but overall it felt like there was structure which I appreciated. I’m glad I heard it but unlikely I’ll listen to it again. On Fire was my favorite.

I thought this would be way worse than it actually was, just based on the reviews. Even though I do agree that most of it was just sound, some of the riffs are really cool and I actually enjoyed them. I might not come back to this but definitely not as bad as I expected. Fave track(s): Assassins, Dracula Mountain

Highly chaotic. The album art is a very accurate representation of the sonic landscape. I could see this being a very fun and energetic live show. Probably won't ever listen to this again though.

What an unholy racket - guaranteed to annoy your parents, neighbours - or nephews. Of course, I'm entirely pro anything this wilfully antisocial. There's only two of these guys yet they conjure up a maelstrom of noise that feels almost physical. Alright!

Interesting to see this on here. I definitely enjoyed this more than I thought, but am not running back to it for a casual listen. Good working or rotting music.

What is this? Post-Industrial-Tekkkno on Speed? Noisy and loud, but uninspired. Don't like it.

HL: "Dracula's Mountain", “Crown of Storms”, title track S/o to “Longstockings” to seeming like a more mellow track before attacking my eardrums at the end Also whoever added the lyrics in certain songs is either the band themselves, or someone at Spotify who needs a raise Listening to this album in full was a pretty mixed experience, but the highs were *high*, maan. I'd take in a Lightning Bolt concert (with ear protection, bien sûr) February 12, 2023

Controlled chaos. Really dig this.

I like that the vocals are buried a bit in the mix, they become an instrument in themselves, too far forward, and you start to listen to them and I don't think that is what is intended, they are not words, they are noises. There really are some beautiful melodies here, buried beneath the fuzz! Wonderful Rainbow is such a beautifully well-timed respite from all the chaos that came before it, and now we're off again, fully rested. Well, that was lovely. It did get a little samey towards the end and my ears were glad when it ended, but I liked that a lot. 3 / 5 stars.

This is one of the albums that is very clear-cut for my rating system. Will I ever listen to it again? Very likely no. Do I think this was a worthwhile listen and that other should go through the same experience? Yes, thus this earns my 3 as "I understand why this was listed, even though it's not my thing.".

totally unfamiliar with this band and their music. Read the review on Allmusic.com and was prepard to hate it. I don't hate it. I also don't love it. It's a loud noisy confusing mess but oddly compelling. Not sure I would ever recommend this to someone but an interesting listen. 2.75 stars

I've never heard of Lightning Bolt before, but I thought this album was pretty good. Apparently I'm not very familiar with noise rock as a whole; I did a quick google search for the best noise rock bands, and the only band I even recognized was Sonic Youth (who I happen to be fairly familiar with). I thought the music worked really well on this album, and even though it's 'just noise rock,' everything felt really complex and deep. Even though I enjoyed this album, I can't see myself seeking out any other Lightning Bolt albums any time soon.

A little too chaotic for me

Not all that into this at first. Once I “caught on” it was something I could go with. Loved the driving bottom end and how it seemed to carry the melody, if you could call it that. Moderately engaging overall but it’s not something I’m interested in listening through from start to finish again.

Whoa. What was that? Brutal jazz-metal-noise-punk instrumental record? I can’t even put a name to it. It’s fun to listen to at least once in your life but I doubt this is going to be on repeat listen for much. Good album - for novelty.

Difficult to rate. I like to think of myself as being at the noisier end when it comes to music appreciation. However, this album proved a bit wearing after a while. I think I need more than just noise ...

No noise annoys as a noisy noise annoys.

Respectfully, this sounded like one long song. I didn’t hate it but I couldn’t get into it.

The definition of Noise Music. Not sure if I like this. Math rock/math metal. The songs are getting more melodic as the album goes on, which has improved my rating.

Good noise

A wonderfully frenetic romp of an LP. Not all melodic attempts here work with the hyper-aggressive instrumentation and delivery, but for the most part this one flies by in a usually enjoyable rush.

Noise rock.

I love some noise rock. Low's Hey What way one of my favourite albums of 2021. If this is Lightning Bolt's most accessible album, I feel their fan base would be quite small. The tracks with some good bottom end fuzz and driving distortion laden bass lines were great. The grating high frequency barrage was a bit much at times. I wish I could give it a 2 1/2...

A little much

When I hear this album, the LAST thing that comes to mind are rainbows… i thought I was really going to hate this album, and surprisingly - I didn’t. It is loud and noisy, but there is something interesting about it. I am glad that I got a chance to hear it. I don’t know if I would ever decide to listen to it again one day voluntarily… 3/5.

One thing you can be sure of is that no one's ever gonna sue these guys for plagiarism! They're brutal to listen to but I like their attitude, their relentless unlistenable determination and the fact they can create this wall of noise with just a bass and drum kit. Then of course there's the singing.... I'm glad 1001 picked what is considered their most "accessible" album. A step up from Napalm Death.

This noise rock band is loud, aggressive and in your face. I was surprised to read that it consists of only two members, a drummer and a guitarist. It was also surprising to read that they cite Philip Glass and Sun Ra as influences. But after listening more closely I can hear Glass’ repetitive driving rhythms and Sun Ra’s psychedelic improvisations, all amped up on speed of course. Despite the chaotic onslaught of noise I was surprised at how listenable this was. I won’t seek this out normally but if I’m ever in the mood for some noise this is quite good.

This album was kind of weird. Some of it was a 4, a lot of it was a 2 at best. It was just all over the place.

I was expecting to hate this and surprisingly didn't. Not really something I could listen to for extended periods of time but it was pretty good. 3.5 stars

An intense migraine for 41 minutes and 44 seconds. Not as bad as it sounds; well it's better than being bland. Best Tracks: Assassins; Dracula Mountain; Crown of Storms

Tää oli ekalla kerralla aikoinaan päräyttävämpi kokemus. Mut kyl edelleen toimii.

Nice to have something that's kind of in my wheelhouse, that I'd not heard of. This was OK but nothing amazing

Not my specific cup of tea, but I appreciate the skill behind the music!

so I have no idea why they named the album this because the last thing I think of is a rainbow its super rough, scratchy instrumentals but actually not bad 3.5

Ma fille me disait « Mais pourquoi?

MAX volume required. As I've said before, I do like noise. 3 good record "Duel In The Deep" kinda hurt my ears though, don't listen to that one. It's sad cause I would've liked that one if it wasn't for the screeching.

Grating to listen to but I have to admit the drumming was fantastic. 5/10

This had some really interesting points but in general I find a little bit of the Noise Rock goes a very long way for me. The focalization (particularly the kind of nasally “Captain Beefheart sings The Blimp” only more incomprehensible” stuff I’d had enough of after about two minutes). I suspect it would all be a lot more effective live where the energy of performance could better carry the periodically discordant chaos.

I’m all for a good instrumental. This was not one that reached out and touched me.

I gave it about 2.5 songs, but it was too fast and loud. Made me anxious!

“This album is listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, which describes the band as creating "a mix of sheer abuse and welcome diversity, for a truly challenging listening experience“. This is just another way of saying ‘it fucking sucks and no one likes to listen to it, but it’s different from the mainstream so we’ll just add it to the book

I can see what its trying to do but it elicited no emotions or any enjoyment in me

10 songs First song I thought oh shit this is going to be fucking miserable to get through. Then came along songs 2 and 3, which had some resemblance of actual song structure, so I thought hey, you know what? this could actually get a 3 star rating. But then, the intro to 2 Towers attacked, and the album never managed to make a comeback. While listening to this a neighbour was drilling some holes in his walls and I unironically couldn't tell sometimes whether the sound was him or from my headphones.

If I had ADHD and a chip on my shoulder, I might enjoy this.

Overall Rating - 2.10/5 (4.20/10). Very much not my style.

There's nothing wrong with a noisy chaotic breakdown sprinkled here and there but the whole album is one. Like cinnamon you're supposed to put a teaspoon in not eat the whole jar jesus

This gets old pretty quick. I appreciate the unorthodox approach to songwriting, but this doesn’t really ever go anywhere. 5/10

just noise with every instrument doing their own thing. not for me.

This was basically unlistenable for me. If not for the appreciation for the lead guitarist, I would’ve given it a one.

This feels like the start of most Tool songs and I kept waiting for the song to begin. After 40 minutes, nothing.

Am I dead yet? I admit, I got a good long chuckle from imagining Brandi--poor soul--soaking up rays on the beach, spending who knows how much hard-earned dough for some sweet R&R...and then being forced to listen to pummeling jolts of distortion, octave pedals, and busted snares for forty-five minutes straight. Unlike The Pogues, I know exactly what mood I'd have to be in to seek this out. Memories of moshing in the dorm at Belmont. Sometimes you just have to mosh alone in your bedroom, and this stuff is perfect for that. But could a guy get a little LESS weird screechy feedback and a little MORE volume on the vocals, please? Album cover is precise. Selected highlights from Lightning Bolt's Wikipedia page: "Lightning Bolt are known for their so-called "guerrilla gigs", preferring to play on the floor of the venue rather than the stage, creating a tight circle of spectators around the band." "As the group's vocalist, Chippendale eschews a conventional microphone, instead using the type of microphone built into a household telephone receiver, held in his mouth or attached to a mask, which is then run through an effects processor to further alter the sound." "Gibson plays his bass guitar tuned to cello standard tuning, in intervals of fifths (C G D A), using a banjo string for the high A."

No fav song

Never heard of lightning bolt, I have no idea what to expect going into this listening experience. I’ve listened to a few songs by now. It feels like something interesting has to come every song, but the instrumentals stay the same throughout most songs. It’s definitely a very interesting album. I like some of the instrumentals, but most of the time this is just straight up noise pollution. Genuinely felt like this album was never ending.

“Hello Morning” started pretty bad, then built up with guitar and drums which saved it from immediate no, but then it tried to burst my ear drums so it went to maybe. I enjoy what’s going on behind, but not in front. I think this must strike a pretty good balance between noise and rock, so I can see the appeal as it did help me actually focus on my work. It’s just not something I would not go out of my way to listen to, and it also hurt my head a bit.

Noise, the album.

It's alright. I really dig noise rock but find this record to be a little too repetitive. Lot of songs grab me but don't take me anywhere. Time and place. I'll be coming back to this more often than some albums here that I rated 3's and 4's.

I'm way too sober for this.

are there any good albums in this generator or is it all dog 💩?

This was not good. It may have sounded like they were trying once or twice but no need to have to have heard this.

Everytime I thought it was getting good it started repeating 10 second loops again

Hard to listen to this whole thing. The novelty got old quick.

This is what I'd call a "show" album. You listen to it for show - not for enjoyment. Though there is something about the monotony and repetiveness of tracks like 2 Towers that burrows into the head. I won't be listening again. But it's by no means the worst album on this list that I've heard.

I get the idea but I am not a fan.

The good bits were things Sonic Youth did better. The rest was just noise.

Obviously talented noise rock outfit outfit, but too repetitive for my tastes. It also started stronger than it ended, which tends to be a pet peeve of mine.

Hard listen for me - appreciate the talent but just didn’t enjoy

Noise Rock is not my cup of tea so I personally don’t find any enjoyment in this. 4/10

I didn't enjoy the album sadly Rating. 2/5 GEMV (25.04.2026)

Migraine inducing album of noise rock. I guess some might be into it? Interesting sonic textures from a bass guitar but I guess I need a little melody and differentiation between songs.

Not into chaos noise rock

Plenty of other post punk that would have slotted much better in this slot

I knew there must be a connection between Lightning Bolt and the Secret Mall Apartment, and indeed Brian Chippendale knew about the project and comments in the movie. Providence is unquestionably the weirdest city in New England. I can't say I enjoyed this in any way but I admire the fact that they pulled off the trick of making people listen to the least listenable noise imaginable (and this is their accessible album!)--unlike, say, the KLF, who were also conducting a conceptual art project, but theirs produced music you can dance to. Well done, guys. I'm reserving my 1s for albums that are offensive, lazy, dumb, schlocky, incompetent, or generally made in bad faith, which this is absolutely not.

Was pumped to get a punk album after a few that felt like wading through mud. Started out well, but it didn't grow. There was one big well of energy at the beginning, and then it just held there. Nothing stood out because there was no change. it was just a constant barrage of high intensity noise. Its one of those albums where its understandable why its included in this list, but misses for me.

Well, if they wanted to be loud, they did it. I’m not sure there would ever be an occasion where’d I’d be like, “You know what? I could really go for some Wonderful Rainbow right now.” Unless I wanted to recreate a jackhammer.

I didn't like this. But I also didn't dislike it as much as other similar things - there is at least musicality going on here, and it was interesting enough to listen to and I thought it was very effective at what it was trying to do even if it's not to my taste.

Not really my kind of thing, but it seems good for what it is. Favourite track: Duel in the Deep

Hard pass.

Feedback and clatter one of the more challenging listens. Think I need to relisten a 2 or a 3. Maybe 2 at the moment.

While I generally enjoy the randomness of this album generator, going from three hours of Ella Fitzgerald to this is a banal computational evil. The relentlessness is strangely endearing. The ironic album name, I salute. It's noise, but it's more interesting than Justified. (Migraine sufferers, limit yourselves to ten minutes of this on a good day.)

This is described as “noise rock” and that is accurate. It was too chaotic for me.

Strangely similar feeling to the last album, from The Birthday Party, but much better music. Kind of just disinterested, but it was enough background music that it flew by.

Yup, this is noise.

I like some noise music, but I don't listen to it. I'd rather listen to this than Tom Waits. I'm mostly just curious how this got on the list.

They kept it on beat most of the album, but sounded like kids learning to play bass and drums. Shouldn’t be on the list.

kinda reminded me of teenagers in a garage band. yeah, they can play but that's about it

As a listener, the only challenge, I feel, this recording delivered, was in hearing all 44 minutes of it. This made my tummy hurt.

A bunch of unfinished notes app demos. There are some cool ideas in here but few of these tracks feel ready to be released.

- I've heard better, much more interesting noise rock than this. it's ok but not as earth-shattering as some would have us believe. (Crash Worship) -

You know that kombucha girl meme? Essentially that was me with this album. It sounds like a broken machine in a haunted video arcade and that’s both positive and negative. When they found a groove and played off that I really enjoyed the album however more often than not I got lost in the sound and the fury. I can see the art not sure I always hear the music

podeis parar de ponerme mierdas

Not interesting. Was not worth the listen. More noise than anything. A generous 2

Loud sounds

I really did not care for this.

Ummmm Uhhhhhhh PunkMathMetalGarageAvantegardeNoise I listened 3 complete times and it got better each time. By the time I was halfway through the third listen I was beginning to really like it.

There’s something here. I’m intrigued by noise rock, and I seriously think that, in the right mood, an album similar to this could be therapeutic in a way. This album just doesn’t do it. I enjoyed the riffs and it was definitely fun at times, but it was too repetitive. Each riff, though good, would be played a million times, and I’d think “okay, that’s enough.” Then they play it a billion more times. Cool album cover though.

These guys can absolutely play. The drumming is athletic and relentless, and the commitment to their sound is unquestionable. But the sound itself is exhausting. The distortion is constant, the dynamics rarely shift, and the intensity never really lets up. While I can respect the musicianship and the raw energy, I found it difficult to connect with musically. Impressive in its own lane, but not something I enjoyed or feel the need to revisit. A two.

I agree with Karen

Noise rock, emphasis on the noise. I didn't hate this but I still feel like I can't give it more than a 2/5.

Non-consensual

Lost my long review. Not a fan. Can never actually hear what the singer is saying. Guitar is really good, one shining star. No one song that stands out as really good. Hate some of the random scratchiness, ie on long stockings. Nothing to make it stand out from any other album. A lot of the songs have cool beginnings but never turn into anything. Just don’t really have mic more to say than that. 1.8 stars.

Feeling like your brain wants to escape your skull. It feels quite stressful to listen to this album. Some interesting material though. 1.5

Whoever marked the files with "Noise" as the genre was absolutely correct. I often enjoy certain types of atonal or mechanical music, but this really didn't do much for me.

Wavers between noise and music, almost manages to work but not quite

Noise: The album

*At times noise, at times it hit a groove, and at times it was just confusing *I like avant-garde and non-mainstream stuff but this would take some time for me to really get into. That being said, there were a few times where I found the method in the madness, which was rewarding.

this was definitely nothing like i'd heard before, an all instrumental rock album. was okay to listen to but nothing stood out

Needed to sit on it and listen again. First listen was a big no, while for the second.. : Some very interesting rythmic changes, also very interesting to learn that this is only drum & bass instruments (and not the genre). Nice creativity ; I like the way you can do more with less, but overall lacks in this very subjective criteria of beauty for me to be complete and catch my ear enough to retain it. So, musically speaking not really my jam, but I can see its artistic value, somehow !

No thank you. This is just noise. I’d love to know who insisted that this be on the list. I’m going to listen to The Black Album now to wash the awful taste out of my mouth.

Uhm, it’s interesting… Stand-outs - Assassins - Dracula Mountain

Certainly noise, a lot of it as well.

I did not enjoy this

Eh, the vibe on this one was confusing to me. It was catchy at times, but overall not really my thing.

They are doing something, and I appreciate that. Just intriguing enough to keep me listening. Was considering three stars for the originality but then 30,000 monkeys hit… so yeah.

I need a rest

noise rock SUCKS - a special thank you 2 towers for the same riff on repeat for like 5 minutes Honestly though this wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Most of it sucked yeah, especially when you can tell the parts that they ran out of creativity and decided to just repeat the same notes over and over again. Almost worth a 3 but not quite, too many annoying repetitions on this thing. If they knew how to stop repeating notes for bar after bar, this album would be heaps shorter and way better.

I think this one is a little too much for me. Wasn't terrible but not sure I can say I liked it. 2 stars.

An odd listen, I enjoyed the feedback on the vocals, and the haphazard instrumentals. It reminded me of Big Black, but without the tunes, aggression or humour. For interest value alone it gets a 2.

2 stars - I read a VERY accurate description of the band as noise metal.

Not my thing. I think this could be very cool live, or as an art piece.

after a while it gets to be a bit much

That was an experience. Two instruments get together to see how much noise they can generate in a Red Bull-fueled jam session. I’ll give them this: they stay locked in time and play off each other with real precision. But once was enough—this is the first and last time I’m enduring it.

i get it... but that's enough of that

Lacks accessible melody's. The music is heavy as for a 3 piece but it just doesn't do much for me after the initial buzz.

Felt like 40 minutes of the same guitar riff.

“Challenging listen” indeed, Mr. Dimery. However, I can’t say it’s as non-sensical as most of the other noise rock albums I’ve heard. It’s clearly well thought out and metal-inspired and for that I did enjoy it to an extent. Happy to never listen again though.

Some sequences were screechy. The whole of Hello morning, where they presumably were tuning the instruments. Unpleasant. Those noisy parts disturbed and successfully invited chaos. But then it picks u,p and you can jam to it energetically. I both enjoyed it and hated some parts. Like the ending to Duel in the Deep (or Longstockings beginning) that just sounds like a teapot whistle, not for me. favs: Assassins, Dracula Mountain Least fav: 2 Towers was 2 Repetitive for me. Duel in the Deep.

Just a lot of noise really

Musically ok (in places) but lyrically very poor.

I am not sure whether to describe this as noise rock or simply just noise! In places, and in particular the first few tracks it is a good listen with the driving rhythms make it an interesting experience. However, as the album progresses the noise intensifies, and the whole thing becomes a tough listen and I found myself skipping tracks. It makes you appreciate the way traditional songs are structured, and they are done that way for a reason!

I liked a couple songs but I don’t remember the names. I could listen to those ones again but not the whole album. It all sounded the same after a bit.

This kinda hurts. It's better than Yoko Ono though. But noise rock is just not what I am made for.

Oh Great Generator, why must I listen to this album before I die? It’s boring, lacks talent, devoid of inspirational power and moral shock. The mix of rock and electronica is somewhat creative but alas I despise electronica

not for me

Okay, but unlikely to play again

These guys love their Steve Albini…. Sounds great at first. But it gets monotonous very quickly.

This was painful to listen to, but it was refreshing to hear something different. I put it on for a workout and my listening experience was elevated.

I’m sure I heard a tune or two in there somewhere which were somewhat enjoyable.

A punk album from 2003 2

Almost couldn't finish this, very rough listen. Not good en never return. 2/5

Sounding akin to a misfiring 1986 1.4L Ford Fiesta, this thing tries in vain to propel you forward but, bless it heart, it's all noise and no power

estranho

Straight ass. Truly the scariest thing I've experienced this halloween! It's just pure chaotic noise, and while it's not bad enough for a 1 star it's pretty damn close.

6.5 - Not my cup of tea. Just a lot of grating and loud noises. Cool/experimental but not exactly fun to listen to. Best: Assassins (6.5). Worst: Crown of Storms (6).

I should hate this but I don’t quite

Not for me

Noisy, erratic, musically well made but not one I'm going back in for.

A few interesting bits but mostly not my thing

I've heard worse. I've heard a lot better. Described by some as "a truly challenging listening experience". I didn't find it particularly challenging to listen to, but I don't mind noisy rock. A few decent tracks, but most of the album was just ok for me.

Noisy and fuzzy as this is, I enjoyed it... to a point. It was not making my work day better so I had to jump ship. 2? 3? It's a fond 2 as I'm never going to circle back to it.

Ok - got really excited when I opened this in Apple Music and the genre was "punk". This should be described as "noise" at best - but maybe that's not an option for categorizing music in that platform? Did not like.

I can recognise the skill in a chin stroking sort of way, but other than the surprisingly enjoyable opening tracks, I didn’t find this to be a pleasant or hugely rewarding listening experience.

Maybe if I was in a specific mood

Oof noise rock ain’t for me

this would sound good on speed, maybe.

OK OK OK, C'EST SPÉCIAL ET INNOVATEUR JE COMPRENDS, MAIS PAR PITIÉ ARRÊTEZ J'EN PEU PU

Felt a little bit more like noise than music

I've been waiting for the right day to listen to this for over three months, and the right day still isn't today. I quite like some of the repetitive bits and pieces, but overall not for me.

Not without value for me but likely more fun to play than listen to.

This was not a Wonderful Rainbow in my opinion. It was a Duel in the Deep that I wanted no part of.

I'm confused. What am I listening to? Why is it catchy all of a sudden? What the?!!!! is happening?

Im all far dissonant, heavy, music but I think this album literally gave me a headache. I kept wanting to adjust the mix to hear the vocals more and it was quite the onslaught. Quite like the instruments and especially, drums, but all together just became quite messy and the distant vocals just putting me on tilt!!

Day619 - sounds like an audition tape

Kinda just a lot of noise. I like noise and it's not so horrible but it's aggressive and mostly lyricless and incomprehensible and i don't love it.

To freaks like me "noise-rock" is just "rock" 😈 ...okay but that doesn't change the fact my ears physically hurt

The drums and bass are the only good things about this album. Otherwise it kind of sucks.

Oof, this was an assault on the senses. The only thing keeping it from a 1 is that I have to admire the audacity in trying to make music out of this, even succeeding at it in a few places.

This was a struggle. I just can’t see by what metric this is an album I needed to listen to before I die. It’s not particularly good or interesting, wouldn’t have been out of place with some of the metal albums if they added some vocals. And it’s hardly influential, they barely get 30k listeners a month on Spotify. I reckon I could find a way to get more. Interesting that is about as harsh as I can be and I’m still not going one! Haha Simpsons: No

Dracula mt is a great name for a song. Noise rock ain't it.

1.8/guys i've had enough of this

One of those bands that I would love to see live but hate to listen to on record.

Super organized experimental album, interesting sound choices and overall tone, mostly in a positive way. Extremely repetitive when it comes to individual tracks, where the tracks do not really have any development other than repetition, otherwise added noise or variation of the same sound in a different noise field. Solid tracks: On Fire, Crown of Storms and Duel in the Deep. Overall not worth a replay, aside from the mentioned tracks.

If these guys are just pure noise rock, I get it. It’s good. But that is such a small niche. If this album is supposed to be up there with Beatles, Radiohead and Blind Melon albums? I don’t get it. It’s not a behemoth in the music scene but it is enjoyable. Interesting enough, when I think I can finger tap on my guitar, I too do the same riff as the opening of “crown of storms”. This is a heavier White Stripes. Does that help? Choice cut: Crown of Storms

not in my bag

What’s up noise. I didn’t hate it but it started to make be feel woozy weird which is probably the point.

I appreciate that this exists, because no one else was doing it like Lightning Bolt. I like the 2015 record better though.

1,5 ster

I can't say that I enjoy noise rock (does anyone?) but there were a few interesting moments here.

This is interesting noise at times the drumming sounds thin not sure why it is on the list.

Heavy music, I must say. On the one hand, it has something to it, on the other, it's not very listenable.

Found the squeaky noises painful and I wasn’t a fan of the weird vocals, but there were parts of the album that I did enjoy. Definitely not something I’ll listen to again though. Fav song: Assassins Least fav: 30,000 Monkies
