Reviews (page 5 of 8)

These guys are clearly talented, musicians, but this style of rock doesn’t speak to me

A rock version of free form jazz. Bits of structure, lots of chaos and noise, vocals mixed down to a barely audible level. Actually not bad, but it’s hard to listen to the whole album.

It was ok. There are some noise groups I love and really get and others that I’m not so into. Put this in the latter camp.

Lots of energy but it doesn't go anywhere. Doesn't make we want to get up and dance and definitley not a sing along, or even a hum along. Even when I was younger, I would have changed the channel if this came on Listen to music in my office all day but would not include this in my playlist.

Just banging, and clanging of instruments. The second half, at least, had catchy tunes. Favorite Track: "Crown Of Storms".

Not to my style

“Crown of Storms” was listenable because I enjoyed the arpeggio, but it lasts too long. Everything else was complete shite. 2/5

Standout Songs: Assassins Dracula Mountain Crown of Storms 30,000 Monkies

I didn't really enjoy the later half of the album.

41 minutes of nonsensical noise you'll really want to enjoy but ultimately fail to do.

big sound fora duo

This really was just pure unfiltered noise but I didn’t even really dislike it to be honest, there were some great moments with some nice guitar riffs and such. Probably not something I would consider ever listening to again though, cool cover though. Overall 3/10.

Headache simulator There ARE some hype riffs and drum breaks though Can't put 1, cause it's out there and some of it is good, but it's draining

Was isch dänn das??? S Lied Assassins isch glaub Programm😂

Noise Rock is exactly what I thought it would be...

J - 2/5 Best Track - "Dracula Mountain" F - DNL

At times it does sound like noise for the sake of noise. Sure, someone behind this is a musician, able to think and feel purely on musical terms, perhaps even applying some of that to this project. Hidden between the incessant wave of static, pummeling drums and repetitive guitars there's something, a hint of music, a whiff, if you will indulge me. These traces are to come by, they demand patience. If you have it, then good for you.

Interesting, others might enjoy but to me it’s just ok

Tons of potential, very little delivery. You have to provide SOMETHING for people to latch onto.

Blasts of sound. Perhaps like a heavy metal group trying to imitate a marching band practicing one line of music over and over and then switching to another line of a different song. Not my cup of java. 2/5

I don't think it will be an unheard opinion to say I wasn't a fan of this one. It was musical and it was complex, and it took some insane talent and practice to create this. But, just not for me.

Was not a wonderful rainbow :( Will probably listen again.

At a bit of a loss to know what to say about this. I certainly didn't enjoy listening to it, but on the other hand it was in a perverse way kind of interesting.

Wow, that was intense. Need to listen to some Norah Jones now

I'm theoretically way into this. In practice I just can't get through more than a couple songs right now. I think I need to come back to this when I'm in a different mood.

Never heard of this group. If you prefer noisy jamming, primarily featuring heavy bass and chaotic drumming, than this album is for you. I don't think I am among that subset of listeners. Just couldn't get there with this one.

Oh boy, another album that's in the bottom 20 of this website! And it's noise rock, my favorite! I'm being sarcastic, of course. I wasn't super excited for this album. But you know what? It's not the worst thing I've ever heard. Dare I say, I'm not upset to have listened to this. That doesn't mean I don't have issues. Here's basically my thoughts on the album. I think there are some good elements here. The instrumentation is crazy and unique. I don't love it, but I respect this style. It's noisy, but not too noisy, at least for me. It definitely feels like music, albeit a fairly unconventional style of music. However, while I feel that these songs serve as good starting places for something, I don't think they work super well on their own. Like, a song like "Assassins" could make for a pretty cool beat for something like a Death Grips song. It's crazy and it has an interesting feel to it. However, you listen to the song and you're kind of like "That's it?" These don't really feel like complete songs. They could be really cool as parts of songs, but I don't really vibe with them as they are. I respect this album, sure. However, I don't really vibe with it much myself. Still, this is not the worst inclusion on the list. High 2/5.

Heel raar album

This sounds like a malfunctioning robot toy with the batteries dying but taking an ummercifully long time to complete the agonizing drain.

To each their own. The genre of "Noise Rock" definitively isn't for me, and how this album could find its way on this list is beyond me, but there you go. 1.5/5

It's not just pure noise, they have something. Longstockings and Wonderful Rainbow stand out. I'll never listen to this again though.

Pas pire mais faudrait que ce soit meilleur pour que ce soit meilleur.

tough listen. Initially sounded like it might be ok like early Jesus and Mary Chain, but just becomes a racket.

One of the most uncomfortable listens I’ve had on this list but not a bad album in its own way.

3/10 - it is just heavy rock and roll but it kind of sounds like noise the whole time. Not very good in my opinion maybe if you love guitar you will like it

I struggle with noise music. If it comes together in some way I can work with it easier but I can't help but feel this is deeper into doing things as a form of experimentation versus being especially purposeful. Far from an expert and I could just be missing something here but I don't know what I was meant to dig out of this.

Nice album art. I'm about half way done and I might like this. I don't believe this is an album that is required listening. It feels like another one that can be used to set a base line for what someone doesn't like. It also sadly reminds me that even with a mild interest in making music, that I should have just made an album and put it out there in 2003. The last 2 tracks were the worst.

Supposedly their most accessible Noise Rock album, but I'm not sure if I'd class it as more Noise than Rock. Not an album to relax to or to have on in the background.

Barely scraping by with a 2, just because I could see the value in this for someone who really wanted to rage. Personally would not re-listen, but by the end of it I could see what people might find in this music, thinking generously.

OK, paradox. I didn't hate this, sometimes. I even like a song or two. If it worked it worked. If it didn't... it physically hurt my ears. This is... troubling to say the least for any sort of music criticism. One ought to be able to simply listen to it. But the thing is, it really didn't matter what I did to try to equalize it or keep the volume down... it was just ... I think I get what they are doing and could listen from across the street if they were playing a club or something but ... Dude! It actually hurt me to listen to!

i love so much about this and yet i wish it sounded more like music

My first impression of this album was confusion. I had no idea what this band were trying to say. And then it dawned on me. This is a bunch of drunken college kids who recorded themselves throwing their instruments down a very high stairwell. And I began to wonder why this is one of the 1001 albums I must hear before I die. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-wonderful-rainbow-by?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false

3/10. Just not my tempo.

This sounded like a college garage band that couldn't find a lead singer they thought was pretty enough to shag. They played in their apartment garage with the door open thinking people would flock to them but they just kept walking by. Nobody called the police on them because it wasn't that awful, but they also never got out of the garage.

The first thing I noticed was that you can't understand the vocals and they are kinda buried. Am I supposed to hear the vocals? It quickly became apparent that I'm not really supposed to hear the vocals or understand any lyrics. The vocals are just another noise in the soup. I like the vibe and the energy of Dracula Mountain. It rocks hard! Most of the songs get a bit repetitive. These all feel like some interesting riffs and song ideas but it's all a little too half baked. Also it's too distorted and hissy. Sorry. My ears are getting older and I'm getting so annoyed at Crown of Storms. (skip) OK Longstockings might be a decent song but could you please cut that fucking feedback mic. Is he singing through a mega phone? This whole album would've been better as instrumental. OK now Longstockings is just chaos noise. See, if I paid a cover to see this band, I'd be pretty pissed about now. 30,000 Monkies is a special kind of annoying that I can't tolerate. (skip) Duel in the Deep has a cool beat but it's not cool enough to just hammer the fuck out of it for 6 minutes.

Too much.

Not bad, very match rock, which isn’t really my bag.

"The floggings will continue until morale improves" would be the general effect. More bonkers than wonderful, and iron grey is the color of grunge, certainly not rainbows. Too numetal to be art rock or noise rock. Though obviously one takes points off for being willfully difficult and obscure, one adds points for being just too dudes banging away – and not just in the studio. Though not the worst record on this list, it's not at at all one's thing and probably deserves it's ex-ing as one struggles to see how this will age very well – indeed, it already seems gimmicky and performative. The interest may at first seem passing, but it does get oddly compelling (e.g., "2 Towers") ... like one keeps listening far past the point when one knows what's up with this. "Longstockings" and title cut briefly add a touch of variety to the otherwise more-samey-than-consistent bludgeoning.

This has elements that are great hiding within it, but mostly it's like if rock and freeform Jazz had a baby and then dropped it on its head

Jesus, second noise rock album in 2 weeks. I'm not sure I'm up to the task. At least it's better than the Liars. There are more riffs, for examples, and less of a sense of just industrial pots landing on the ground. At least this kind of sounds more punkish. Even if the singer just kind of sounds like he's having a seizure, but hey--that's something. Anyway, there are moments of greatness, like the final solo of 2 Towers is pretty cool sounding. Starts of grating like most of their songs, as if even your noise rock CD is skipping, then turns into something pretty epic. Anyway, listening to these guys makes me think somebody needs to make a mockumentary like This is Spinal Tap, or even maybe just a hilarious documentary, about this movement. Just thinking about the studio decisions here makes me laugh... "No guys, that's not the crash I was hoping for... could you bang less tea pot and maybe smash a wok or something? And maybe turn up the fire alarm. I'm not feeling it yet..." 2.3.

There are a few great moments in this album but most of it feels like the same 1.5 seconds on repeat

That was rough.

When there are attempts at lyrics, it's painful. There is often a semblance of a song being generated that I'm on board with. Then it distorts and changes into a different song entirely. Some of the bass is really driven and engaging. The top review on this album is one of my favourite top reviews I've seen yet so that easily helps secure it a 2.

Progmetal aint my bag. If it's yours this will be a winner

chaotic noise. distorted vocals that sound like they were recorded through a megaphone. the songs would start out with an interesting groove but then repeat it over and over to the point of redundancy.

I was living in the hair salon part of a very small shopping center. The place had a lot a December vibes. So much was changing so all I remember is someone, my girlfriends boss I believe, really wanted be to make steam, there was an issue over some chapstick and a round room that everyone seem to be impressed by. I think Roger Ebert was there

From the opening guitar feedback and warming up on drums, I didn't have high hopes. Fun at times, but the inaudible lyrics and noisy production turned me off by the third track. Had its moments of head-nodding, foot-tapping rhythms, but these went on for way too long without any variation, inducing a headache. Unlike a lot of 2-star ratings, this is not because of boredom but an average of the 3 stars when I was enjoying various moments and 1 star when I was gritting my teeth while enduring the sounds.

meh. Gold star for effort.

"It will certainly wake you up in the morning" as Gordon Brown said of the Arctic Monkeys. It's fine, quite needed it, but only the once.

"In the beginning, there was noise. Noise begat rhythm, and rhythm begat everything else." Mickey Hart

Subversion of rock tropes etc, whatever. Like all art projects if you need to be told…. It’s not as bad as was expecting from the write ups. It has its place and if it’s your thing fair enough. Personally can’t give it more than 2 Stars, when the thing is to maintain that monotone rather than exploration of the fragments of ideas in each track then I find the drone a bit too much of a grind.

I’m all for experimental music and maybe in the right mood I would’ve been able to appreciate it more.

If I wanted to listen to noise I would make it myself

The sound of getting high on household cleaning products. Maybe good background music for a chase scene but noise rock is not my jam

Monotont och märkligt. Det finns något men jag har inte hittat det än.

there’s no way this didn’t influence splatoon’s sound. the unintelligible vocals sound just like the inkling language! i started out being surprised and interested, but got burnt out as the album progressed.

Anytime you see “______ Rock,” and the blank is not music related, you know you’re in trouble. This wasn’t even terrible or anything, but felt like a middle school band who learned to be loud, but they just got good at their instruments.

wow, that was different! i think past me would have liked it just because it's such a raw experience.

High energy wasn’t in the mood for it but it was fun I guess

If I was an American teen, steeling myself for undertaking a school shooting, I would definitely listen to this album. What does it say about me, a British 41 year old, that I'm acknowledging that and yet still giving it a solid two stars?

wow, that was intense! I'm not sure i could stand it more than 40 mins. Some cool songs thought! Assassins and Crown of Storms are the highlights to me 2,5 stars

It would be one star, but I was vibing to one or two of these songs. even though this album is just noise rock. Still though won't listen to this again!! 1.5

appreciated the technical elements, loved songs with time signature switches, a little too “wall of noise” for me overall.

Thought process while listening. What a din. Don’t know if I like it but. Sonically some interesting ideas just a shame the can’t turn them into songs. How long does this go on for? Can’t wait to hear what’s next. Are these lyrics I’m supposed to be hearing? I bet people have killed while listening to this. At least that one was short. Jings, what’s next? Jesus wept And Just laughing to myself Certainly a challenging listen. Not my taste wouldn’t say it was good but also not the worst thing I’ve ever listened too. Don’t think I’ll be listening again though. Now off to recommend to others just for fun 😂

Ugh. Make it stop.

I believe there is an audience for noise rock. I'm not that audience. I do dig Dracula Mountain and Two Towers though.

nahhhhh

Chaos...

For something sounding as fun as "math rock", it was awful.

There were quite a few periods of this album that just left me asking 'wtf is this' but also a few periods of actually enjoyable music. 2.5

First listen. Meh.

I don't completely hate this, there were some points where I got lost in the cacophony of noise. It's impressive that they make music like this with mostly just a bass and drums Overall it's not for me but slightly better than 1*. At least it wasn't too long

I once saw an opener who wailed on an electrified bassoon for 20 minutes. It sounded a lot like this

not my favorites

Just not very good. There are short parts of songs that are nice, but overall this was not a good listen. 2/5 Won’t listen again

'It is considered to be their most accessible album' LOL.

omg wtf.. i can respect the musical talent but this sounds like if animal collective and some shitty math rock band decided to do college screamo 😵‍💫 i don’t know what to do with myself while listening to this. it just made me a bit stressed. i feel like the type of person who would claim to like this, is the must pretentious, insufferable music dork. gah , not my cup of tea. not that it’s awful, just truly not my cup of tea.

I wouldn't really call this good music

Some brilliance, some garbage. Interesting strategy.

Thoughts before listening: I remember these guys. I feel like it was kind of a noise rock thing. Probably another example of the editors trying to pick cool recent music but mostly missing on what was going to become truly classic. Review: Definitely noise rock and definitely not my thing. I'm sure something like this was cool to see live, but on a studio recording it just doesn't work for me. Overly distorted guitar (maybe just bass guitar?) with barely distinguishable vocals and little in the way of melody or traditional song structure...just a droning noisy racket. Its definitely not boring, but also not very good. 2-stars

Not a genre I would likely pick, but certainly not terrible, especially as backgroung music?/noise while working. Some of the songs had pretty cool vibes; others were a bit painful.

10/15 minutes of this was kinda intereesting. Noisy but had some good tones, I'd have been interested walking passed it in the street. 45 minutes of it didn't offer much as an album.

Well, now I know.

The progression of the Spotify track play count matches my enthusiasm to a tee.

This noise did not improve my mood this morning. I did get all the way through it so that's an accomplishment

Went into this one blind. Not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't this. I feel a bit blue balled after listening. Each song promises something, but doesn't quite get there, similar in a way to the vocals I guess. Is that what they were going for? I'm not sure. The best I can describe it is talent cosplaying as talentless.

not for me

Blind album and artist. That was a rough listen. I just listened to an hour of tango and I think id rather go back to that.

A cacophony of noise. Some of which went together but mostly did not. Not for me sorry.

Though this be madness, yet there is method in it. I was 100% ready to abandon this album after the opening minutes, but it grew on me as I listened. Not my favorite genre, but not a total waste of time. Plus there’s a song called “Dracula Mountain” on this album, so it can’t be all bad.

First "noise rock" album on this list that demonstrates talent. This was actually worth a one time listen.

tutto strumentale RUOCK? 2/3 a quanto pare si chiama noise rock, molto appropriato

'Noise', from Providence actually kinda interesting but little replay value

Saw these folks once live about 25 years ago. Put this on and realized I'm still good from that.

Noise is not really a genre I can handle. I appreciated some of the rhythmic elements, but otherwise this just made me anxious.

Are you ready for... some noise metal?

This was a lot.

Frenetic! I am not a fan of a "truly challenging listening experience"....didn't totally suck.

Noise is not really the genre for me. More melodic than I initially expected and I am no worse off from listening to this.

Repetitive and noisy are the best descriptors I can come up with. I get they are short staffed but maybe they could invest in someone to growl random words or something to break up the monotony. The metal aspect is cool but the sound gets messy after awhile, like 20 seconds in.

Metal is not my thing

Heavy, techno-industrial

Not bad as background music when doing other work, but it is rather noisy and cacophonic. I want to hear the melody (Dracula Mountain ain't bad), but it's eluding me....

Wtf am I listening to lol. Weirdly I liked this more than some of the “real music” on this list. 1.5

I like the concept of this album but not the execution.

A real toe tapper. First time…last time.

not bad but not for me

This album sucked. I feel like I simultaneously respect it for being noisy, different, and that much noise coming from just 2 musicians, but... I also was not entertained. I've been crushing 2-3 albums per day catching up lately and this album took me about 4 days to finally get through. +1 star for novelty.

Ágætir sprettir í byrjun, ekki eitthvað sem ég myndi setja í rotation

2.5 stars. Enjoyable but won’t go back to it

I love noise rock, this is not good noise rock.

Some food riffs and techniques but in the end I found it too meandering.

Pretentious dog****.

Noise rock eh? Hmm. It's a very cool album cover, love the artwork. The music is definitely edgy and different. Do I like it though? No. It just sounds like backing tracks for an off-brand GTA game. Bold to call this a wonderful rainbow when it's a shit rainbow at best.

La chitarra elettrica è troppo predkminante e fa troppa confusione..

decent vibes but a buncha nonsense

All music is art, but not all art is music. I think about all the movies, shows, and books I've read, specifically Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Foxtrot where an older brother is jamming out in the garage with his "band" and just doing a terrible job. Doesn't sound like music, is just dudes being guys whamming on their strings and drums. That's what this reminded me of. I don't think we have heard that type of true grunge and in that space I'd say this is a welcome addition to the list but I was not a fan.

nope. 2 stars.

There's some music under the dissonance, and some fun moments that could hype me up, but probably not gonna be a repeat listen.

this albums biggest issue is inconsistency. i suppose that comes with making an experimental rock album through, not everything you try will work. there are moments on each track where they get a flow going and hit a pocket so good that it makes you forget this is a freeform rock album and they go back to complete randomness. i want to enjoy this album more than i do, and i see the talent and ability they have, but there’s just nothing here.

Too far into noise, there were some good parts, but it never managed to be coherent enough for me.

I made it through the album, but only barely. It's noise/chaos that once in a while almost sounds like a song.

I like songs that occasionally devolve into chaos, but this feels like chaos that occasionally, accidentally becomes songs.

No thank you.

Assassins Dracula Mountain Crown Of Storms

I’m not sure what else I expected from the genre “Noise Rock”, but….yeah, there’s both noise and some form of rock. Some playful guitar licks sprinkled amongst the cacophony, and the drum work is heavy in a cool way, but make no mistake: this is an exhausting, over-stimulating record made for people who can’t feel anymore. I’ve been there a few times in my life, and I probably would have enjoyed this album during those seasons as sort of a “white noise” sensory overload, but not now. I’m in my sensitive acoustic phase, and this is too scawy.

Reminds me of Death Grips

I tried to keep an open mind playing this after reading the negative reviews, but I really couldn’t get a lot out of this one. It was just, well… noisy. And not at all worthy of being on the list imo.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. It took me by surprise. This is a lot heavier and dissonant than I could have expected. This is not particularly accessible and is a lot of harsh noise. Having said that, it gets into a pretty good groove in some parts so I do see some appeal here. It is not something I can see myself coming back to very often.

Reminds me of a bunch of the Fzero tracks...

This is something I wanted to like and that high school me probably would’ve liked but it was kinda just songs that never went anywhere

Literal noise.

This feels a lot like my headspace: overwhelming disorder and noise with brief moments of clarity. A really tough listen and I'm not sure it's worth it.

Yeah not exactly sure what this is. New age metal? Idk, it had moments but there isn’t a lot here to talk about or will ever tell anyone they need to listen.

I'm not generally in favor of "noise rock" - but I actually didn't mind this album. It's not great by any means, but it constitutes a little more than just noise.

I could see how someone would like this, loud and intense but not for me 2*

That's a hard pass from me dogg

Wonderful Rainbow’s problem is that it’s both too weird and not weird enough

Noise rock. Ni me he enterado del disco. No me ha llamado nada la atención.

Prob a 2.4 rating down

In hindsight, this was not appropriate Sunday night mending a sweater on the couch music

Sounded like the same song played at slightly different speeds. Road noise with potholes of depth to make the journey eventful if not enjoyable.

messy guitar slop listenable but fuck this 1.9/5

Interesting. Glad it exists but it’s not for me

Tough to rate this one: there were some points where I felt I could get into it, but devolve back into the muddy soup of noise. I haven’t heard of “noise rock” before so maybe this is exactly the point. First impression was of a low-production dirty bootleg for a little known punk group. There were some nice bass lines throughout. 2.5/5

Bored and kinda annoyed at this one.

Anyone can turn the distortion up to 11 and pummel the kick pedal, lads, it’s just most people choose to deploy this tactic sparingly, if at all. Thankfully Lightning Bolt do throw in the occasional riff amongst the cacophony to keep it listenable.

This came at the wrong time for me. Perhaps when my mood was ripe for something more chaotic this score would be a bit higher

Not really my thing but I listened through it bc it's from Providence, RI.

Just too much. I can appreciate it but Jesus Christ it was obnoxious

Me aburrí a la mitad

hilarity.

Whoa. Can't say it's my cup of tea, but... there were enough moments surfacing above the waves that tugged on me to keep it in 2-star zone.

Man, this was an odd one. After the first track and start of the second I wondered how this made it on any list. During "Assassins" I started to see the appeal. It's like monoteonus dance where there is a lot of texture and a certain type of groove that speaks to me. It reminded me of hearing Justice's "Cross" album for the first time and hearing "Stress". There is something innehrently catchy and raw about it. That being said I felt the first tracks were better than the rest. Combined with that it got tiresome to listen to many songs in a row which led to me having to take breaks, means I can't really rate it over a 2. I will still come back to it since I think this album has potential. It reminded me of hearing Justice "Cross" album for the first time and hearing "Stress". There is something innehrintly catchy about it.

I'm still not super into noise rock, but I dig some songs on this one. It was pretty front loaded for me though as I didn't care much for the songs at the end. I could see myself maybe coming back to this one 2.5

2 Stars (5/15)

Really mixed about this album. Feels like one big car chase scene. Made me feel like the shows from the 90s when the middle schooler accidentally drinks their dad’s coffee and is just going nuts off the caffeine. No doubt unbelievable musicians but so much going on here. I’m a fan of noise for noise’s sake. This fits that bill.

Didn’t absolutely loathe it, and it sounded impressive. If I was stoned I think I could love it.

Sometimes I get too busy to really focus on listening to music, so I appreciate an album that actively encourages me to tune it out.

Insane but sadly not my thing at all. Cool that they’re from RI though

Insane lol. Kinda into it. Kinda too early in the morning for me to have listened to this.

Really didn’t enjoy this.

Noise noise and more unpleasant noise

This was just a lot of noise

Better than I expected. Does drag a bit towards the end. Standout songs: Assassins Two Towers

There was a rainbow of sound. It was not wonderful.

2 like idk feels like they doing to much

very aggressive

ouch :(

interesting conceptually but somewhat anxiety inducing.

Nothing special

"It is considered to be their most accessible album" Wouldn't want to listen to the lesser accessible albums....

hard, head-banging. not my style

Too much noise

Oof. So apparently this genre is called noise rock and I have to admit that I find this reasonable. Quite hard to listen to and even tho I appreciate the very experimental sound I don't think I will listen to this album again.

Rough and grungy, but not in a way I was really into

Okay I get it. Has notes of punk, post-rock, pure noise, industrial, and traditional rock as well. Too easy to criticize, this music is more of an artistic statement than Music. Much like The Fall as an anti-music statement. The album gets SO CLOSE to being interesting at certain points. I definitely experienced some cognitive dissonance, and I think that's what these guys are after (?). There is more interesting avant-garde and noise out there, starting with Merzbow (and maybe ending with Merzbow). I might check out some of this bands newer stuff just to see where they went with this idea.

I will always wonder why posers consider “challenging” a characteristic when listening to music. Not that inaccesible but will certainly never listen to it again.

Rock noises

Derber, treibender Noiserock, der besondere verzerrten Sorte. Mir zu schrabbelig.

Didn’t do much for me.

Almost stopped listening after the first song, which is truly just noise. Stuck it out, and the rest is actual music. Not my thing, though.

I'm not going to lie, I came in fully expecting to give this 1 star. I've heard Lightning Bolt, and their music is not for me. But after listening (and a visit to the album's Wikipedia page), I'm not surprised to see this described as the most accessible LB album. It's not terrible! There are cool noises on here from time to time, and even the odd riff! Still, at the end of the day, noise punk is not my thing, even if this is on the lighter side of headache fuel.

Noisy with completely incomprehensible lyrics. Not for me.

Noisy.

A grind at times, sorta catchy and fun at others. Can appreciate this being different, but noise rock isn't for me. "Assassins" is the best of the bunch.

huvudverk

I wouldn’t listen to it again but it’s interesting. Good album for the list. Different than anything I’ve heard of. 5/10

From the wikipedia, "a truly challenging listening experience" I need challenged listening experiences only.

a bit messy, raw, but some decent nuggets in here, did not complete entire album. Might have to ingest a bit more cocaine to enjoy this?

Noisier than some noise albums, this didn't do much for me unfortunately Stand out songs: - Dracula Mountain

Noise rock. Ni me he enterado del disco. No me ha llamado nada la atención.

More tired than wired. I love my noise but this felt a bit formulaic, and if you can call a noise act this, derivative. Interesting that this album got listed but so many other noise acts seem to have been forgotten. I started off liking it but was a bit tired of it by the end. Thanks BTW to the reviewer on here that mentioned the Boredoms being ignore by this list. I am going to spend the rest of the day listening to them as a palate cleanser and I advise that you do so too

Horrible Rainbow…. Assassins, at least sounds pretty interesting…. There are definitely worse albums on this list and there are a couple that are similar to this one, but at least this one has some rhythm to it. It is listenable, but you really have to be in the right mood for it. 2.5/5

Unrelenting monotonous noise, but 'Longstockings' does break out and is pretty nice until it too devolves into trash noise! 'Wonderful Rainbow' (the song) hints at something magnificent and then vaporizes. Overall, I get it, but I don't want it.

Warning - under no circumstances should you listen to this album while driving. Normally I appreciate a good aural assault. But this album is like taking Negativland or John Zorn’s experimental music and stripping its humor and context.

I agree with the wiki that this is a very accessible noise rock album because its the only one I've heard that I've even sort of understood the appeal of. I still started to get a headache by the end but in the first half I really enjoyed the repeating guitar chords on tracks like assassins and dracula mountain. I would still never listen to this on my own volition but I at least appreciated and got where this one was coming from. The album art is also very fitting because it's like a peak at real hardcore talent and interesting ideas behind mountains and mountains of overwhelming noise.

wtf is this

Interesting but a very difficult listen

if i could go back and change one thing in all of history i would have made it illegal for white men to use guitars or drums from 1990-2005

An album that really sounds like it’s album cover. You’re trying to make sense out of the chaos, with some glimpses of something really beautiful under the surface. 4/10

Not really my cup of tea, but not bad.

Boring stoner rock

Turhankin outo. Ehkä tietyissä nautintoaineissa voisi pelittää paremmin.

Liian kaoottista melua. Joitain ihan jees hetkiä levyllä, niin ei ihan pelkkää ykköstä viitti antaa

If Wikipedia calls this their most accessible album, then I truly don't want to know how their other stuff sounds

Noise just barely melodic. Barely.

Noise. Soo much noise.

Didn’t massively vibe

Noisy mess of an album

At first I thought this would be waify indie, but no it's noisy as it gets. They seem to have one specific bearable rhythm, and the rest is... well, it's noise. I don't want to pretend this is talented. Intentionally bad is still bad. 2/5.

Noise alert. Drum, bass and unintelligible shouting. Gotta admire the vision but its a nah from me.

Um, this is a ... challenging listen. There is nothing enjoyable about it, and I do feel that I basically suffered through it. That said, there are some interesting/not boring experiments happening here, so it should get some credit for that. Totally not my jam, but interesting enough to warrant at least a 2/5.

Never heard of this band so going in I didn't know what to expect. The first couple of songs were super, super rough but near the end it started to get more enjoyable. It is an interesting listen and something I am happy to have heard, but don't think I'll ever need to hear again. It's not the worst thing I've heard on this list, but it doesn't suit my tastes.

It was OK. There were some songs like 'Two Towers' which I ejoyed but a lot of the tracks wee quite repetitive in parts.

2 stars, which is probably more than this deserves, but less than the number of times I had to apologize to my wife for what she had to overhear.

There's certainly a crock at the end of the rainbow, but it's not full of gold.

Musical expression of anxiety

pummeling. i am pummeled.

This one is new to me. Never heard of them or this album, so I didn't know what really to expect. Boy, this is unique for sure. It's a form of aural assault from the get-go. The best description I can give that at least made sense to me is that it is like a hard/Indie rock version of some of the freakout moments from the Grateful Dead's live Dark Stars or Playing In The Bands just without the eventual payoff of a killer melody or mind-blowing improv. One song of this sounds kind of cool, an entire album is tedious. I get why it was picked, but it didn't do a whole lot for me. It's not a 1 as I did find redemptive qualities in a lot of it. But it's a solid 2 for me.

If this is a wonderful rainbow then i evidently like my rainbows less full of wonder. Should be a 1 really but not quite as awful as those

It was better than I expected and was sometimes surprising. Not my thing though.

I actually don't mind this kind of music when it's in small doses but 40 straight minutes of this is really grating and I got fed up pretty quickly

I think 30,000 Monkies is a good representation of 30,000 monkeys in the music store

This gave me anxiety. When punk turns to noise, I'm outta there.

Almost unlistenable and not in a good way.

Didn't listen but I trust my friends

I know how to perfectly describe this album in one incomplete phrase: If Metallica were strongly influenced by Yoko Ono. I feel I’ve said all I need to say on this “music” album.

As convinced as I am that main purpose of this is to be interesting rather than pleasant I just kept getting a bit bored. 10% of the album is just annoying noise, 10% is very interesting and inspired but 80% just flew by me despite it's best efforts to be anything else than boring.

The review for being on this list included that it was a “challenging listen” yep

This is borderline punk. Bad punk. This just isn't my genre.

oh man. all the songs thus far are like the intros to songs that end up being just the songs. About halfway into Towers and I just want it to stop. Man this stinks. some of it is followable, others is just a wall of sound.

There are some great, interesting noise albums. This one is ok.

This might be the opposite of what I listened to yesterday. I had to look up what IDM is. I can't believe anything/anyone would self-identify that way. Who can dance to this? The rhythm is so jilted and angular. There were definitely parts of it that were cool and parts of it to like, but honestly it feels more academic than anything else. There's definitely a time and place for this, but I don't think I know when or where that is. Standouts: Dracula Mountain, Crown of Storms, Longstockings, Duel in the Deep

Favourite track(s): Assassins; Dracula Mountain Somehow this was easier to listen to than Joni Mitchell. The bass lines are kind of cool and it is less incoherent than I expected when I read the term Noise Rock. Still, it's noisy and I won't listen to it again. Ever.

A couple of interesting beats, but mostly just not my thing.

Would be good if pissed out of your head and full of speed. Sober, it is just noise!

I don't like it when the reviewer promises a 'truly challenging listening experience". This is definitely hard, fast, loud, but there's some artistry to it. Now, how do I get rid of this ringing in my ears?

Pretty dire. Some good motifs but just absolute trash between them.

I can see why it's well reviewed, but not my style

Nah, not for me.

I am not super into Lightning Bolt, but they are quite a force.

Zwischen 2 und 3. Tendenz eher zu 2.

Bizzare album. Not everyone's cup of tea... Not sure it is mine either, but I did enjoy listening to it more than expected. 2/5

There were parts of this that were fun, interesting sounds - these guys can clearly play their instruments - but they didn't take it anywhere worth listening to. Very little coherence, nothing behind it. Noise rock is a very apt name. 2/5 as it had quite a few moments of interest, but definitely nothing more than that.

Jees onpahan noisekin koettu. En osaa oikein arvostella tätä, ei oo mun juttuja man mut ihan siistiä. 2/5 maku, josta en ole vielä oppinut pitämään.

If I wanted to hear 40 minutes of angry, unpleasant noise then I could just tell my wife she really DOES look fat in those jeans. But who am I kidding, that would be 3 days of unpleasant noise. 2 stars, only because a couple of songs had some redeemable qualities. I just hope the boys in that band wear ear protection.

Not sure when I'd be in the mood for this. Frenetic.

I never felt more like I had a hangover when I didn't have a hangover when I listened to this.

uselessly confused

2.5 overstayed its welcome and got a little annoying by the end but not the worse thing i've ever heard.

This album made me realize I may not like punk as much as I thought

Noise rock. "Noise" is defined as "a sound that lacks an agreeable quality or is noticeably unpleasant or loud." When explaining the raison d'être for noise rock, guitarist Steve Albini of Big Black said, "Anybody can play notes...the point here is stretching the boundaries." I would point out that a hug is something pleasant, but stretching the boundaries makes it strangulation. Stretching the boundaries is not always good. I like notes. There were some moments of interest in this, but I would have enjoyed a "best five minutes" version.

Hmmm. I didn't really enjoy this nor did I find it very interesting in its unpleasantness. I found it temporarily and only slightly more interesting when I learned that this is just drums, bass, and vocals. But then my interest waned again. But I'm not mad that it exists. If this is their most accessible album, I'm a bit curious about the others. Those might be more interesting.

Loud. 5/10

Very noisy. Some of the noise am actually sounded nice though.

I didn’t really like it

This was definitely interesting but really not my style. I have a lot of love for the experimental aspect of it though but I will not revisiting.

This album was too noisy for me. Tracks like "2 Towers" and "Crown of Storms" would attempt to get interesting, and then the amount of chaos would ramp up. No thanks.

This gets a second star because I thought the drumming was excellent.

Very much like a fistful of Reese’s peanut butter cups mixed into a bowl of pickled herring.

I tried. I really, really tried. I’m not a punk fan. Like at all. But I really tried with this one. If each song was maybe no more than 2 minutes, then this would be ok. But I don’t need 3 plus minutes of headache inducing music that only gets louder when the headache is getting worse. Maybe if I was in one of those destruction room bars where you can just break a bunch of shit to vent your frustration. But this didn’t do it for me, not one iota. But at least it’s not, shudder, Nightfly

apprezzo le sperimentazioni, meno il rumore

A little too out there for my taste. Interesting sounds, but not for me.

Not in latest (2018) book.

I agree with the reviewer this was a “truly challenging listening experience".

I know it was a noise rock album but it was too chaotic and disconnected for me

I like music that has "noise" when it is energetic and purposeful. This is...music put in a blender. The amount of guitar screeches alone was nails on a chalkboard. There was one song that sounded like it had other instruments, and that was a very meh okay.

That sinking feeling you get when you read this is considered their most accessible album

I had never heard of this band or this album. I went into it blind and just started playing it before reading about it. Let's just say the the title of the album is a little deceiving. Lightning Bolt is a two person band - a bassist and a drummer. Their style of music is "noise rock". So, this was not the most relaxing album to listen to on a Sunday morning with my coffee. In fact, I think it made my morning anxiety worse. And I apologize to any of my neighbors that might have been out in their lanais trying to enjoy a quiet morning coffee. I kept it turned down, but that album was intense. Can't say I enjoyed it. Just lots of noise and not really music.

enough of that

A track starts and you think, ‘I quite like that riff’. Then you notice that it’s 7 minutes long and nothing changes from beginning to end. Then the next track starts. And it’s the same. All very clever - difficult time signatures and all that - but not exactly easy listening. I realise that not everything has to be easy to listen to, but there does have to be some reward for me to want to listen to it again. Which, in the case of this album, I won’t be.

Ääh. :D Tavallaan osista tykkäsin mut olihan tää nyt ihan metakkaa vaan.

Well, noise rock perfectly describes this album. That was noisy with little in the way of a melody. Not for me.
