Reviews (page 3 of 8)

There's some pretty gnarly sounds on this album. I've been meaning to check these guys out for years and I'm glad that I finally did so.

The intro had me concerned, but Assassins leads with such a demented yet groovy riff I can't help but like it. The bass tone is insane. Mostly instrumental. Weird drum sound. Dracula Mountain is more of the same. 2 Towers has a complicated intro then a heavy riff kicks in and doesn't stop. After about four minutes the riff evolves into something new and twisted. I love it. There's some pretty parts too, like the middle part of On Fire or the short title track (which is followed by maybe the most chaotic track on the album). Duel in the Deep closes things out with droning, noisy fury. I don't think I can give this top marks because it's mentally exhausting but I'm glad it's on the list.

A noisy mess in a really pleasing way. Big, bright cacophonies that smash around your head.

At first I fucking hated this, but then I started to feel the groove and the chaos made sense. V agro, v messy, v fun.

A relentless barrage noise rock that was incredibly fun

Some good tracks in here. Definitely has a time and a place

Assassins // Dracula Mountain // 2 Towers // Crown of Storms //

Somehow captures their live energy, made sure I didn't listen too loud as they left my ears ringing for a couple of days last time I saw them live.

A brilliant noise, with nonsense lyrics and impenetrable rhythms, and I really enjoyed it! Falls just short of full marks, but I will add their other stuff to my after-the-list list

A really unexpected gem!

Finally, something that is unique and stands out on this list! I can't believe this came out in 2003, it has a very modern appeal and I can see how this band may have influenced later groups like Death Grips, LustSickPuppy, etc. I love abrasive music like this so glad it was on the list. The drumming is phenomenal, as well as the noisy glitch sounds. My only qualm is that there could have been a little more variety in the songs (thinking of Sunbather as a perfect example). Other than this, a great album I'll listen to again, and I'll look into Lightning Bolt more. 4/5.

Usually don’t like this noisy stuffy but this was great.

I didn't think it was physically possible for a noise music to slap as hard as this. What a treat. Also, it's hilarious that it's called "Wonderful Rainbow" while it sounds like it's raining concrete blocks.

I really enjoy Lightning Bolt in general. Hadn't heard this album before but it's great. Really relentless and raw. I feel like the vocals were underutilized, but beyond that loved this.

I somehow never knew how long Lightning Bolt have been around. Listening to Lightning Bolt is like getting peppersprayed in the face. You just get hit with the noisiest loudest guitar and the chaotic clang of those drums. If you're into music that goes this hard for 40 minutes straight, you're a psychopath, but I bet you're a really nice person to talk to.

I queued this up and Apple Music said it was punk, I did not expect this noise rock intensity. I dig this kind of music sometimes, but this was a bit much at times, wish I could see them live. Mixed between a 3-4, giving it a 4 after reading a bit more about the group. If it was just purely on the audio with no context maybe more of a 3.

I understand why this album might not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed it. The guitar and bass had a driving feel that was still accessible despite the fact that this was a noise rock record. I can’t say how influential this might have been at the time, but the mixture noise, punk, and hard rock really worked for me.

What a sensory overload feels like

Guitarras, percusión y estridencia. Sin vocalización. Intenso desde el primer momento

Great band, great album. Their live shows are rip your face off intense, this isn't that far behind.

In terms of noise rock, this album was actually really melodic. There was a lot to grab onto, while still being experimental. Definitely one that I'm planning on coming back to 4/5

So extreme that it's strangely soothing at times. At a lower volume, Lightning Bolt remind me of trance-inducing traditional folklores--such as Balinese music for instance, oddly enough. There's the same sort of layering mixed with instinctual impulses, with everything driven by the power of sheer repetition, and how the latter contrasts with subtle variations. Of course, this album was first intended to be played LOUD. This band must be a hypnotic treat to watch live. Especially in a basement show. Some of the best gigs of my life were in dive bars and basements. You don't necessarily need to go to a festival or an arena to have a transcendent experience. 3/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential albums". Which translates to a 8/10 grade for more general purposes (5+3). To which I add an extra point just to piss off Bonnie Raitt and Adèle fans. I feel mean and confrontational today. Maybe because I ended up playing this album LOUD, ha ha. Number of albums left to review: less than 400 (I've temporarily lost count here) Number of albums I'll include in my own list: half so far, approximately Number of albums I *might*  include: a quarter, approximately (including this one) Number of albums I'll never include: another quarter (many others are more important to me).

Post rock Mogwai ish 2 Towers

Pretty, pretty good

Loud, raw, unapologetic, this is brilliant

Bass and drums combined for an absolutely insane experience. '2 Towers' really is a piece of noise art. Also: "It is considered to be their most accessible album". Haha.

Interesting use of dissonance, not 100% my thing, but a cool listen.

This album really hits you fair and square right from the start. I wasn't really sure where this was heading at first but by Dracula Mountain I was getting into it and that feeling continued through 2 Towers and On Fire. Crown of Storms and Longstockings could also be contenders for favourites.

Riotous! I've seen Lightning Bolt live and they're a lot of fun - a LOT of audience participation, which adds to the chaotic energy. An album can't exactly capture that, but it certainly conveys a vibe and a half! Fave track - "Dracula Mountain"! 🧛‍♂️

I don’t think I’ve come across Lightning Bolt before. I’m not really sure what to make of the album art - it looks like when a small doodle gets out of hand and end up as a big ball of chaos. Then there’s the obvious dash of rainbow too. Therefore, I’m expecting gay chaos. Gaos. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Assassins, Crown Of Storms I can’t comment on the gay part, but this was certainly chaotic in a very good way! The music is extremely energy filled. It feels punk, but the fact that it’s almost entirely instrumental with very minimal vocals goes very against punk which, by its nature, tends to vocals thoughts of politics and such. I said earlier that I don’t think I’d heard of Lightning Bolt. I can now add to that and say I’ve never heard anything even close to Lightning Bolt. This was something different and I quite enjoyed it.

WOW. This record is insane. I believe it only consists of a drummer and bass player. Man, do they achieve a huge sound. I can only imagine what it sounds like live. Super unique noise rock sound with some hardcore elements mixed in. The drumming is amazing. It reminds me of the John Coltrane "Ascension" era records. I actually enjoyed this a lot.

I love that this is their most accessible album, yet one of the most challenging listens on the list. From the 1001 book: "Lightning Bolt does not so much play music as inflict it upon the listener in a barrage of technical noise." I can't say that I fully enjoyed the whole album, but I enjoyed much of it, and what I didn't exactly like was made up for by enjoying the feeling of my ear being challenged. Also, find memories of seeing them at the Turf Club years ago.

Definitely a challenging artist but in comparison to other material of theirs this is downright melodically accessible. Not something I wanna always wanna listen to, but it's pure tribal energy. More music than a lot of music.

I didn't think I would enjoy this and I definitely wouldn't seek it out. It had moments. It inspired feeling. I could imagine other symphonies. More interesting and varied than a lot of albums I would normally consider better.

The rock version of Spy vs spy by John Zorn, love it

Truly impressed with this, considering it is listed as in the bottom globally. But this is good noise rock.

Chaotic which I enjoyed, Assassins tracks was great

Whoa! Wow, wowowowow-wa-weeeh-wah! Holy crap! You know when you kidnap someone and they say 'no, no, please let me go,' and then after a week or so you open the door and tell them they're free and they end up staying with you...? What's that called, Chicken Stock Syndrome... ? Well, that's kinda like my involvement with this album. Definitely grew on me after the first listen and I stayed for another. Also, I feel like I worked out after listening to this, my heartbeat was fast and borderline irregular. Speaking of cardiac arrest, I can't imagine what Lightning Bolt shows are like or how much coke that drummer is snorting to get through a set. WOW!

I really enjoyed a lot of this. I can appreciate that this would be a tough listen for people. Maybe I was just in the right frame of mind for it today

This popped up and hit me in the right way- I like the energy and difference in this. To me there is a fine invisible line between noise for the sake of it and a conscious effort to create an experience. This is right smack bang on that line and I like it.

Album opens with what amounts to feedback and some overlaid noise then bleeds into an instrumental torrent called Assassins, which is lead by a super fuzzed out guitar riff and madhouse drums. Some buried vocals through some sort of a reducer attempt to poke through, but they don't stand a chance. This song fucking rips -- just an unrelenting, pent up journey that almost feels like something out of a demented TRON game. Dracula Mountain apparently doesn't plan to give us any relief... More driving drums with some slashed together guitar riffs and samples. Feels like the musical equivalent of getting sprayed with taco bell meat from a firehose. Oddly I want more... This almost feels like if the guys from Slipknot were just a bit more quirky. This is primo zoning and coding music as far as I'm concerned. Just thumping, progressions that keep your blood up. Reminds me a bit of the math-rock band Battles from what I remember, but this is even more aggressive. I'm going to need a nap after this album. On Fire might be one of my favorites here for its composition. Guitar tone reminds me a bit of Mahavisnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame. Interlude with vocals, however, is a bit strange. Closest thing to a traditional structure on here, I think? Crown of Storms is a sludgy mess of progression with crisp fret-fire overtop forming the main centerpiece of the first half. The second half is dominated by a drum breakdown and undecipherable vocals. Longstockings actually could be a B-side Modest Mouse song. It is the tamest thus far, up until the end where they effectively light the original song on fire and burn it down until it completely implodes. I was just writing that I wish there was an earnest, smooth jazz interlude when Wonderful Rainbow came on. Not quite smooth jazz, but the closest to an earnest interlude this album offers. Well that was one of the more entertaining surprises of this list so far. I enjoyed the jolt to the system and will absolutely come back for more 4 / 5

I had never heard about "Lightning Bolt" before, so I was completely surprised by this one. I enjoyed it, especially for being so different from everything else. I really enjoy it when this happens. Highlight the Wikipedia page that points out this album as the "most accessible one" of the band. I'm slightly afraid of what I'll get if I look at the others.

Sorry, what was that?! You’ll have to speak up son, I don’t hear so good these days. I listened to this fucking album and now have tinnitus. I saw these guys at a festival back in 2015, and I had the same reaction then as I do now. This music is going to destroy you, but it has almost no staying power. Trying to grasp the insane complexities in the rhythm here is enough to drive someone insane, but you’re never going to casually pop this on at a bbq. And that’s not a knock on it at all. So no, I don’t revisit Lightning Bolt very often, but it’s always a treat remembering they’re around if I ever want to completely thrash out.

Listened to this record at the gym and now I’m convinced it should be classified as a performance-enhancing drug.

8/10 I really love some fun, experimental punk and while I didn’t 100% connect with it, it was still very enjoyable regardless

Very surprising. It's a bit challenging and very noisy, however, i was really impressed at how i engaged with the repetitive driving riff of nearly every song (yeah, 30,000 monkeys, i'm looking at you). it was very enjoyable.

uma viagem o som

Feral and uninhibited. Feels like they wrote this for themselves. Love it in small doses.

this album is a fire explosion bursting. I think it's great. Not for all occasions and all times but some days i need an album like this.

This was another one I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about and ended up liking it a lot! 4/5.

Dissonant, powerful and mesmerizing.

This is the weirdest DnB album I've heard, but also the grooviest. Super abrasive and chaotic with underlying rhythmic structure, it reminds me of the peak of an acid trip where your mind goes nuts with only brief moments where you're grounded in reality, only for your mind to slip back into the realm of insane ideas. It's like fast-paced doom metal incorporating elements of classical, prog, punk, and jazz. Honestly, I love nearly every single song. They all flowed from one through the next, and they all took their appropriate time without ever feeling too long or short. Satisfying opener and closer. It's a headache to play the whole thing at once, but it's guaranteed I'll be placing many of these in playlists.

Just what I needed!

Quite surprisingly this was pretty a great. Sometimes noise rock can be good. It was catchy and I just needed some noise. This had something that bars like napalm death lacks.

This was pretty good. It has that characteristic manic Lightning Bolt sound, although seems maybe a little more tame than some of their later stuff.

Liked this one quite a bit. There were a few times where it was too repeat-y, but they were short enough sections that it didn't hamper it overall. 4/5

Was not expecting Lightning Bolt to make it here, but good, love them. A-

fireworks explosion in a saucepan factory, here for it

No longer in the book. Wasn't that bad tho :D

Really enjoyed this

Bit mad but good

I laughed aloud during '30,000 Monkies' when realizing that its wild title so squarely fits its wild sound. My ears enjoyed these noisy creations.

Well, from the chaos emerges order. Not something I'd go out of my way to listen to, but am I put off by it? No.

Death Grips??????

Sold me on the second track and then fluctuated from there, like Death from above 1979 but less talented. I don't mean that in a negative way either the messier playing really lended itself to the chaos of the instrumentation. I'm feeling a light 4 on this one.

Toimi yllättävänkin paljon! Ehkä musta tulee kokeellisen rokin ja noisen ystävä!

Very interesting, a lot of noises here

Completely new to me - never heard of these guys before. Fresh, I liked it

Scratched a very specific itch for me. 8/10

A barrage of sound but I found myself grooving to it. I don't always love noise rock but this was really good. 4/5 stars

Noise/math rock.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Kept it interesting, and had some pretty cool instrumentation

So...I'm the kind of sick freak who listens to this kind of stuff. Weirdly, it has a quality similar to ambient music where you kind of just get lost in it. But this was a bit too intense for me

kinda fun tbh!

Tän levyn kuunneltuani haluisin ostaa viis uutta fuzzia. Älytöntä että kahesta tyypistä lähtee näin vihanen ääni, oispa huikeeta nähdä livenä!

oli kyllä aivan hyvää sekoilua gneeple gnarp glorpy sounds

This album clearly isn't meant to be listened to in the car on a Sunday drive to the grocery store. It's meant to be blasted into your ears in a basement that smells like soot and cigarettes. Not sure its inclusion on this list really makes sense. It's like being asked to judge the Blue Man Group after listening to an audio recording. It's missing context. The first track is probably the most jarring. Some of the others are pretty enjoyable at times. I liked Assassins and parts of 2 Towers.

too noisy! i want to put this shit in the opening credits of my indie movie so people will think i am cool. favorite song is definitely Crown of Storms. strong 3

A fine Noise Rock album. Not special enough to be on this list, though. Here are a few bands that might have been a better choice for this spot: Death From Above 1979 Trans Am Maserati El Ten Eleven Perfect Pussy Viagra Boys Melt-Banana Black Midi The Faint Mclusky Boris Squid Kim Gordon (Solo, of course. We've already covered enough of the Sonic Youth stuff)

Interesting coincidence that this record follows Holger Czukay’s Movies, in this list. Lightening Bolt incorporates Can elements and Holger’s collage ideas in a novel way by using bursts of noise to breakup the intense drumming best illustrated on Assassins. I’m not sure I could listen to this mix of frenetic drumming, feedback and sonic squall every day but as a palate cleanser of sorts it does open up your mind to the appeal of quiet in its wake. Yet, it is still appealing and worth returning to every once in a while. 3/5

I read another review that summed up this album perfectly, " alright, thats enough of that."

Beautiful chaos.

Too noisy for me

Listening to this album is like biting into the sweetest, most delicious piece of candy imaginable—only to be met, in the very next instant, by an unrelenting series of knife stabs to the abdomen, eyes, and ears. I am certain that God saw my Sarah Vaughan review, read words like “tired” and “understated,” and delivered this to me. I am also certain that this is what keeps Zach Hill up at night. While I am leaning positive, I will admit that this is a bit of a one-trick pony. It is amazing how, on a long enough timeline, even chaos becomes repetitive and redundant.

The vibes are interesting and even slightly enjoyable. But much like white noise, nothing really stood out. However, not as terrible as some other reviewers say.

noise bands are tough. not everyone's cup of tea. i can't call myself a lightning bolt fan as i've not heard much of them. this is definitely a noise album, but it's pretty accessible. at the start, i thought i was in for _metal machine music_ and began yawning, but then they moved into their own gear. while i bet this is too noisy for casual listeners, it has softer moments that almost sound like tortoise or the durutti column. i know those bands aren't household names, but they are not noise bands.

noise rock

Wow. I have a morbid curiosity to keep returning to this. Whatever this is

Respectful noise rock? Either do or don't be weird, there is no try.

Liked it more than most post-millennium albums on the list. Not exactly breaking new ground in the noise rock genre, but a descent listen.

I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would!

495/1089 - This reminds me of stuff like Moon Hooch or that Angine de Poitrine band that's been getting popular recently. Very repetitive and gimmicky (in this case distortion rather than microtones). At least the tracks sound distinct from each other.

Irgendwie noch cool der Noise Rock

That was a lot of fun! Never heard these guys before, but WOW! Generally I prefer a little more melody, and some lyrics, but I'm sure there are times when this is exactly what's needed Bold, but cool

Noise and melody making love; this is a cacophony of colors in chaos. Noise-rock.. unappealing but oddly captivating as layers peel back. An acquired taste, this album; I wouldn't recommend it to those who fear musical tumult. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Dracula Mountain - Longstockings - Wonderful Rainbow

Jezus wat een intense bedoeling. Wel lekker.

Quirky as hell, wild, interesting.

Would’ve never found something like this before. Interesting and catchy in small doses.

This is surprisingly good for what they're doing. It's noise, but there's something to it you can hold on to. I wouldn't say I thoroughly enjoyed it, but for what it's doing, it's great. 3/5 because it dares.

More fun than I thought it was gonna be.

decent noise album

It’s ok but it not my fav

Sort of interesting.Pretty experimental high energy rock.

They throw everything into this heavy metal punk sound. Enjoyable for those who like noise rock, I suppose. Good choice not to have vocals.

26 minute mark a groove and a hook . Ohhh and what follows, yes, more of this! Maybe I need to adopt a two listen rule to albums. Maybe it was the advice to listen to this one with the sound up to 11. Maybe because it was a great counter punch to my noisy neighbour that plays crap music. Maybe baby.

I feel like this album is goading me into giving it 1/5 but I actually enjoyed a lot of it. Definitely not boring, noisy but some decent listening in amongst the cacophony.

I don't know what I was expecting, but this was fine. Kind of a disappointment. I wanted it to be one I felt strongly about one way or the other but ultimately all I feel is meh.

Innovative noise rock or pretentious drivel? Still not sure after listening but the fact that I feel so baffled makes me think it was worth the listen at least. At their best, like on Crown of Storms, they sound like Modest Mouse at their most unhinged

That was a lot of noise but I fucked with it.

So loud, so fun, but so repetitive.

It’s noisy, raucous, and really noisy

Vibes 2010/11

I enjoyed it. I'm not sure how good it is. But I enjoyed it. Pretty bad case of same-song. Never quite figured where one ended & the next began. Added to the library tho. 3 & a quarter

I like noise rock and more avante genres of music, but this was a little too repetitive and I’m not a huge fan of blast beats. It was enjoyable. I just like something a little more dynamic.

Can't play this at a party, can you? My sonic senses have been assaulted by this, but not in an entirely unpleasant way. Won't come back to it, but glad I listened once.

Thoroughly impressed by how much this fucking rips

The drums are pulled tight and the guitar is shredding. It’s a bit noisy but a cool experiment.

Noise punk rock. Some cool textures and riff ideas.

This is well-trodden ground - many other artists have made more ground-breaking and more exciting albums in this style. Rhys Chatham, Glenn Branca and Big Black, for three. On the up-side, having this on the list saves us from yet another album from the Kings of Leon.

Intense and honestly quite difficult to listen to. That being said there is certainly a lot of musicality here, even if it's being drowned out by noise. It's not something i would come back to, but I appreciate the amount of commitment to their ideas

This is The White Stripes if Jack White weren't so fart-sniffy and full of himself.

I was certain that I would hate this, but I was surprised to find that it’s actually pretty good. There are grooves to be found in the chaos, and the musicians (especially the drummer and bass player) are top notch. I wouldn’t revisit this, but I’m not upset that I listened to it.

While that maybe wasn't the... best vibe to start my morning with, I actually ended up enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. My cat hated it though, so it loses a point.

FAVS (top 3): assassins, longstockings, duel in the deep mençoes honrosas: 2 towers, 30.000 monkies FODA mas tipo kkkkk nada dms ja ouvi albuns do mesmo tipo bem melhores, nao q esse seja ruim pq genuinamente gostei mas se for ouvir um album desse genero tem outros mais importantes de ouvir antes de morrer alem desse nota final: 3/5

not my favorite but im glad shit like this exists. much rather have people take risks and have them flop than people just pump out more beatles slop

There were moments where I actually was kinda into. More near the front, those being Assassin's, Dracula Mountain (fitting name) and 2 Towers. Back half got a little less accessible and more noisy, especially the last 2 songs hahaha (30 000 monkeys was also fitting). I really liked the driving force they had in certain songs, just carrying this intense bass and drum rythym for long sequences. Had me rocking out. When it felt more disjointed and noisy, there was less to hold on to and just kind of had you dragging behind. I see their vision, recognize why this is inaccessible to most, but respect it whole heartedly. 6.5/10 overall (front half I'd give a 7.5/10)

I have two vivid memories of Wonderful Rainbow. The first is booking them at Great Scott, when touring acts, even regional ones, hadn’t yet become fixtures at our little place. The bar manager and head booking agent were like “uh, are they going to destroy the place? Should we hire bouncers?” The second is at a pre-party situation in JP where one dude simply could not stop doing lines and closed himself in his bedroom - which was right off the living room where we were all trying to chill - listening to Two Towers on repeat for an hour. I poked my head in at one point and he was playing air guitar (well, bass), totally locked in.

Rating: 6/10 Instrumental noise and math rock...very interesting.

It's noise rock, that's for sure, but at least this album has got some good energy to it that isn't just "Oops! All Feedback!" 3.5 bumped down to 3.

I’m at a 3.5 that I’ll bump down to a 3, but I do genuinely think that with another listen or two, I could bump up to a 4 someday. It’s honestly really not that bad of an album. I’d even go so far as to call it good. There’s proper melodies & riffs & structure here, with a loose prog rock feel that just so happens to be surrounded by a gigantic wall of sound encapsulating most of the soundscape. Obviously, it’s abrasive & it is indeed a challenging listen (as the Wikipedia article says), but I liken the whole experience to a magic eye photo. You know, the ones where you had to cross your eyes to see the picture hidden inside. The structure that emerges out of the noise is that picture in the magic eye static, and if you can train your ears to focus on it, using the wall of sound as less of “pure noise” and more of an actual white noise to supplement it, I think the tracks do come out pretty well. There’s genuinely great tracks, with the highlight probably being “Crown of Storms” as the most traditional prog-style track, but everything from “Dracula Mountain” onward ranges from totally fine to legitimately great, and even then, I’d say there isn’t actually really a bad track here. Again, abrasive, sure, and if you want to dock this album for that, I get it, but I think it’s hard to dismiss this entirely off of its production choices. So, why would I bump it down to a 3 if I don’t think there’s actually a bad track here? Well, it’s just in the overall pacing & direction of the album, which is to say that the album does stray a little bit directionless at times. Individual tracks can sometimes feel stagnant, repeating a pattern for a minute longer than it needs to & stalling the momentum / progression of each track. It doesn’t happen super often, but it happens often enough that it becomes noticeable, and it does make the album’s 42 minute run time feel a bit weightier. Past that, I do think some tracks don’t pace out the chaos / calm very evenly – for example, the transition from “Wonderful Rainbow” to “30,000 Monkies” is really, really funny at first, because it’s such an abrasive shift that you can’t help but laugh, but then it stays in that chaos for way too long to feel effective, and it just makes the track have a lot less staying power because of it. That lack of staying power kinda lingers at multiple points in the album, and while I do think they’re all good at providing bursts of energy, sustaining that energy for the whole album just doesn’t quite happen. They do a great job of trying though. Hence, a 3.5 that I’ll bump down to a 3, though I do genuinely think that if that “great job of trying” converts to something a little more fruitful on another listen or 2, with my brain a lot more attuned to what the album is going for, it could get up to a 4. I think it’s not as bad as the 2.29 on the site would suggest, and I do understand some of the more critical acclaim here. That said, I understand a lot of the critique too. I think the whole album is genuinely worth a listen, even if it’s just to see if you can stomach this style at all, and if you can’t, that’s fine. I don’t know that bouncing off of this would fully warrant a 1, but c’est la vie. I certainly was able to stomach it, and I think it’s a really solid album. It’s at least a LOT better to stomach than “Spy vs. Spy” was from a while ago, sheesh.

surprisingly not shit

Never really listened to noise rock before, very interesting. Assassins and Duel in the Deep were probably my favorite. I also like when that indescribable voice comes along. 5.5/10

No one is more surprised than I am to find myself actually kind of vibing with some of this tbh

I thought "noise rock" would be a lot more avant garde and less structured. But this was a fun record from start to finish. All the songs were rhythmically and melodically strong. They just had noise and experimental sounds in a very deliberate way to create a unique sound.

Definitely deserves another listen for me. Weird and challenging but maybe good? Gotta bookmark it for the future.

Not bad. 3/5

First album I’ve gotten that genuinely made me say “what the heck is this noise?” Yes, along the way I could hear echoes of plenty of other bands I like with a “noise” sound from Fugazi to Deftones to White Stripes, but not to the point that I could find my way through this more abstracted form. Maybe if I really studied it I could discover more, but not today.

I remember owning this on CD when it first came out. I enjoyed it at first, but I got bored with it pretty quickly, and before long it started to feel monotonous. Listening to it again over 20 years later gave me the exact same experience. It was fun at first, but it wears out its welcome fast. It feels like it lacks real substance and just keeps repeating itself from track to track, relying more on chaos and energy than actual depth.

It does not surprise me at all that this is one of the lowest rated albums on the 1001albums website, noise rock was already unpalatable for most people when Sonic Youth was doing it. Lightning Bolt doesn't even attempt to follow a traditional rock format and fully embraces the chaos. The main draws of Wonderful Rainbow are that its unique and its heavy. I'm not talking Mercyful Fate heavy, more like Dopesmoker but at triple the speed and intensity. If the brutality of this record alone doesn't satisfy you, there's not a whole lot else to reel someone in. Wonderful Rainbow is a stimulant that some people swear never to touch, while others get addicted for life. If you're listening to this for the first time, I recommend 400mg of Advil, a cold mask, and the loudest speakers you have access to. Good luck.

Not for me

I like noise rock, but some of the chaos on this one is a bit too much to enjoy as music. There are nice catchy moments, that then disintegrate gradually or abruptly into sonic mayhem and decay to a complete stop. Sometimes this means the song ends, but not necessarily. I can say this is much easier to grasp than some of the harsh noise events I've witnessed, but then again they're another thing all together. MUSIC! You can't live without it and you can't.. SOMETIMES YOU JUST CAN'T! AARGH!

Different to what i usually listen to but enjoyable

Reminded me of Batman Beyond in the first half and then settled into a more mellow vibe. Overall a frantic sounding package that never seemed to settle at any point. Made me anxious tbh.

I’m very much undecided on this. I quite enjoyed some of the grooves and the technical ability was clearly high, but it got quite repetitive and monotonous. I was ready for the end when it arrived.

This album is like in the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey when the apes are screaming at the monolith. The apes are this band, and the monolith is the Math Rock genre

Bir overwhelming but it works

I'm all for melodic dissonance to enhance melodies and make them stand out. I'm all IN for a lack of tempo, pacing, or meter. And I am in devout fandom of aggressive and progressive music. But, this is definitely a proto example of the genre and its so abrasive. Hard to enjoy and a bit one dimensional. The genre would morph to include great bands like Hella later and thats the era where this music got to me. And i remain partial to that. 3 stars on ingenuity and an attempt at breaking up the buttrocksoup that was 2003.

lowkey made me focus like crazy

08/01/2026 1. hello morning - immediately very noisy! also very short! 2. assassins - liking the intro! like the guitars and computer-y distortion.... drums and bass are realllly great.... distorted vocals realllly nice as well! loving the intensity and energy in this. great ending as well :) *3. dracula mountain - bass is immediately fantastic!! love how it manages to stand out against all the noise :) tempo change at the minute mark is ggggrrrreeeat!!! drumming is fantastic. having a short break looking through the reviews after this one finished, how is there no electric guitar??? only bass! 4. 2 towers - guitar?? in this is crazy!!! drums are also insane??!! two mins left and reallly enjoying it :) starting to give me a headache though..... really liked it, but this one was a bit too long for me. reeeallly enjoying the songs (more than i expected) but not sure if i can listen to the rest of the tracks continuously..... loving the screeching at the end. 5. on fire - liking the stopping and starting :) craazzzzzzy sounds..... 6. crown of storms - not much else to say.... tapping my foot in a frenzy right now..... great ending! 7. longstockings - had to take a break between the last song and this one. whirry noises. this one is a bit quieter :) as much as i'm enjoying it, my headache has started again..... the constant noise is also getting a bit repetitive. listening to individual tracks would def be better 8. wonderful rainbow - sounds kinda sitar-like at the start.... nice break from the barrage of noise :) 9. 30,000 monkies - liking the energy of this one immediately :) nothing more to say, similar to the other songs. *10. duel in the deep - liking the intro more than the other songs.... verrry atmospheric. loving the twanging...... reminds me of the electrician by the walker brothers. the effects on the bass about a minute and a half in kind-of sounds like an acid house song. love the fuzz at the end! from the name and the cover, thought this was some twee indie band, so was not looking forwards to it, but very pleasantly surprised by it! not sure if i'll relisten to the album anytime soon, but really enjoyed it :) duel in the deep and dracula mountain stood out to me as favourites but listening to them as an album definitely got a bit repetitive and hurt my head.

Definitely out the gate. Appreciate the artistry and creativity- won’t be something to relisten for me, pretty abrasive and not in my wheelhouse. Wild sounds, but wouldn’t go back to it

Quite fun

I have to say I’ve never listened to anything quite like this, nor have I heard this genre of music

There were small pieces of each song that I really enjoyed. Overall it wasn't for me

I didn't know of "noise rock" before but that totally makes sense. I like it in smaller doses, like in QOTSA and Mogwai. If this was broken up a bit more I'd enjoy it more. Low 3.

I've only heard Dracula Mountain before as Muse covered it. I can imagine this splits opinion. They are well categorised as "noise rock". To many that would be a bad thing. Not me, but as much as I liked lots of this (esp Dracula Mountain) and the crashing bass riffs I can't say I would always enjoy it. The fact this is deemed their most accessible makes me reluctant to venture further. But a 4 if I had tit urge to listen more I expect.

It's impressive that I actually kinda liked this. Glad it's on the list even if I have no interest in listening to it again.

Pretty interesting. It takes understanding and skill to not make this sort of thing sound terrible. I quite liked this, but likely won't be coming back to it.

I have no idea what I listened to and no idea why, but I enjoyed that

alright

That was delightfully loud. I look forward to having the opportunity to listen to it on an even louder system sometime

I think in the right headspace this would be great. I can appreciate it for the art that it is. That said, not my cup of tea for most days.

Begins WTF and then I got led into it somehow. Not sure what happened. Loud, chaotic, carnage. A strange and happy 40 minutes

Helped me work tbh

I enjoyed it, but I'd need to be in the right mood

Hello Morning 3 Assassins 3.8 Dracula Mountain 3.7 2 Towers 3.5 On Fire 3.3 Crown of Storms 3.4 Longstockings 3 Wonderful Rainbow 2.6 30,000 Monkies 2.5 Duel in the Deep 2.7 Score: 3.15

Wow, such chaotic energy that pushes the intensity of punk music to its limits

Not life changing, but certainly very cool.

Lol wtf - good music to bang out a punchlist to

Ahhhh I love a good ear shredding every now and again

This album is kind of sick as hell. Was expecting to grit my teeth and suffer after reading the description, but honestly, I was buying what they were selling. It goes hard. It says what it needs to, refuses to elaborate, and leaves. I appreciate that. No bullshit lyrics, just yelling.

Chaotic, but never annoying. Literal noise songs sound more distinct than most brutal death metal songs. I liked this more than I expected. I probably won't be listening to more noise rock like this, but I'd like to explore music with some noise elements. Favorite songs: 2 Towers, Crown of Storms.

81/1089 pretty intense and not my style but interesting, the second half of Dracula Mountain is really great though. Having that particular riff/motif break through the noise was really impactful this was an odd and interesting one, obviously this was made for live shows etc but even so i enjoyed it more than expected, i probably won’t return to it but sometimes it’s fun to have some full-on noise in the background to focus too and this does that. faves: Dracula Mountain, On Fire, 30,000 Monkies 3 stars

Really interesting stuff, reminds me a bit of Melt Banana. Makes you wanna jump around and smash your room up, proper hyperactive music. I'd heard Muse cover Dracula Mountain years and years ago on a bootleg, had no idea it was Lightning Bolt, or even who they were at the time. Does get a bit samey after a bit, I think if the vocals were a bit higher in the mix it'd help. 7/10

Not my thing

My Bloody Valentine for folks on speed.

This is energetic and fun but I heard this once years ago and don’t need to hear it again

This was a more out there album for sure but I definitely find moments of vibing with it!

I hadn’t heard of these guys, and I kind of dug this. If I would’ve heard it when it came out, I would’ve loved it.

I can see why people hate this, but I actually quite liked it. Something a bit different and not to be listened to at excessive length. The funniest thing about this album was usually on Amazon Music when an album finishes it will Autoplay related music, when this album finished it just shrugged its shoulders and didn't play anything!

Good background noise. Organized chaos?

I’m not sure what that was but I’m kinda impressed

Need to give this more attention. Noisy but in a good way.

Better than C-BAT tho. Also i was in good mood

8/29/25. Challenging but rewarding listen. Some of the grooves and rhythms payoff big time.

One single song?

It's good but it's very noise

A bit too experimental for me. Fun to listen to and wierd but different which is always good. Influences from eddie van halen and other rock heroes. Its cool but not a 1,000 all time best

First impression was awful but it quickly grew on me. Do I like noise??

Must be insane live

I wouldn't listen to this everyday, but it's good stuff.

Technically very good and interesting, but nothing that aroused great emotions in me.

I would hate this if I didn't love it - an album's worth of this type of music is a bit much I will admit. Love the tight drumming and the frenetic playing.

I respect this a tonne. A difficult but rewarding listen..

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of the genre “Noise Rock”. Not bad, actually pretty good. Almost sounded like electronic music. Had a very psychedelic element to it that I liked.

Noisy in a good way

This is a wild one. Not an album that I’d put on frequently, but it’s an interesting kaleidoscope of sounds and occasionally fascinating. Good background music for running or lifting weights.

I'll say this: the album cover tells you exactly what you're getting, which is noise rock. I was into it to start, but by the end of track 4 I started to dread finishing this album. There's some stuff I can appreciate here, but it's also a relentless assault on the ears. 2.7

Cool selection, never heard of these guys. Noisy, and quite difficult to listen to at times. 3.3/5

Noise!

Loud, chaotic, crazy, dissonant. Not bad. Wouldn't listen to it all the time but I could see myself listening to it again down the road on an off chance.

I'm not going to lie but I wasn't sure I would like this album. I'm not really familiar with noise rock although I do like noisy music. I like a bit of melody or at minimum a noticeable pattern resembling music. But I really liked this album. It has to be fairly loud to get the full gist but it doesn't have to be ear bleed loud. It's like static but fancier. It covers up the constant hum in my head. I was going to list my favorite songs but after listing half the album, I decided against. It's not for everyone or for anytime but it was a fun and interesting listen.

Definetly noise rock.

Fun times with noise... I wonder how many people had trouble listening to this one (I quite liked it).

This one caught me off guard, I didn't like it at first, but as the album went on I started to like it. I think this is more of an acquired taste.

Wild experience. Would not listen to again but it was kind of a vibe.

I generally like noise rock if it is energetic and coherent. This has moments where it is just plain fun and others where I’m not sure what they were thinking. I’ll likely listen again to this as I feel it needs more than one go through

First pick in the challenge. What a way to jump in. Noisy chaos, not necessarily in a bad way, but back when I listened to much more punk I had to be in the mood for noisy stuff. Sometimes smoking helped. Overall, a weird mashup of noisy punk (e.g., Thinking Fellers) and house. There were some interesting songs, but I wish they didn't bother with the vocals. I went in blind, but ultimately read that this was two people (bass and drum machine), which is impressive.

I do love noisy music. But I usually like noise wrapped in a more coherent package a la Sonic Youth. But this was a pretty exhilirating listen. I'm intrigued. 3/5 Album 73/1001

My monkey brain likes patterns and for some reason, this music actually started to click after about 5 mins. And I give it bonus points for actually sounding like its own thing. Now I'm taking a bunch of points off because it also punched me right in the earholes, but I am glad I experienced the genre. Draculas Mountain was my favorite, particularly the second half of it.

Yeah, they didn't lie when they said it's "noise rock". Assassins sounds amazing though. It sounds ok! Love the chaos.

Absolutely brutal, but I did not hate it.

Surprisingly accessible for this genre—I really enjoyed the hard-driven sound. It did get a bit tiresome toward the end, but they’re definitely a band I’d check out live.

Noise rock that was not tedious and tiresome. Maybe even… enjoyable? I was actually interested in what the next track was going to sound like. Good stuff (for what it is)!

Was better then i was expecting from an experimental noise album. Not something i'd seek out again.

For a noise rock album with pretty low global reviews this actually wasn’t that bad

Decent noise album. Reminded me of Don Caballero. I appreciated the energy, but there wasn't enough other stuff there for me to give it more than 3 Stars.

I have some friends who will absolutely love this, but it’s a little much for me 😅

Not bad but would take me some time to get used to.

A cacophony of noise oriented rock that sounds Industrial, Hard Core and EDM crunched through a blender… and I like it. Never heard of this group, and let Apple Music recommend me some more after completing this listen. 3.5/5

Some great tunes on here, I particularly liked the noisy, screechy one with the singing through the busted megaphone.

If this is considered their "most accessible" album, it's terrifying to imagine what the rest of their catalog sounds like. That being said, I've heard worse and started realizing I didn't hate it when the second half of Dracula Mountain kicked in. Then I started hating it less with each passing song. Overall, there's something weirdly cathartic in the chaos. Will I ever listen to this again? Unlikely. Am I about to give it a 3? I think I am. That was not what I expected when this started!

This took a little.time.to.get used to but it grew on me. Excellent drumming.

This could possibly have gotten a 4 from me if it was a bit easier to listen to. I think the overall sound is really fantastic - energetic and powerful, sometimes aggressive and sometimes more fun. Def it's a wild indie sound. I bet they were super fun live.

I can seriously appreciate the skills and talent. However this is a bit out of my realm. Seems a bit repetitive without much variety in some of the tracks. Have to give props for execution.

I knew when I saw Hella on the similar artists section I was in for a treat. (ntm.)

Intense, original.

Not bad

Pretty impressive driving momentum. I might well never listen to this again though I was happy enough to hear it today.

3.2 2x

Interesting and more tuneful than expected.

Pretty repetitive, but also hits really hard. Great gym music.

Started off rough but it actually grew on me. Love noisy music but this might have been a tad excessive

For being noise rock, I’m surprised at how listenable this is and how much I liked it. I didn’t love it, but if you take it for what it is, it isn’t bad at all.

listened to again the guitar tone is cool but the composition is lacking for me

Instrumental album very good

Noisy, but I actually kinda liked it. Sorry :/

Odd one, this. On the one hand it is, basically, what old people say about modern music in that it is just noise. On the other hand it has some interesting motifs and rhythms buried in there. Not bad, but not something I’d likely want to listen to actively again.

Interesting but did not hit me

Tonally - fantastic. Musically - a bit dull. The sound these guys create is absolutely insane, and I love how gritty and strong the instruments are here. Something that, if inserted into some other bands, would probably make for some of my favorite songs ever. And I get the same feeling about this band and it's instrumental nature. Instrumental music for me is a mixed bag, mostly negative though - I can listen to it for a bit, but eventually it becomes boring when there's no human element adding some texture to it. With a real vocalist, not the incomprehensible, or sometimes even non-words saying sounds that the album has, this genuinely could be one of my favorite bands. Think something like an edgier DFA1979. As it is though, it gets relegated as an interesting experimental listen for me.

I was digging the riffs but they went on a little too long

Apart from the sheet metal intro track, this is what the White Stripes or even Royal Blood would sound if they turned things up to 11. While not easy listening it's hardly early Foetus or Einsturzende Neubauten.

Nice enough

Maggie told me this was awful. I thought it was fine, at times enjoyable. I didn’t hate it. Maybe a 2.5.

Not my jam, but sounded like it was fun to make

Whilst i wouldn't say i enjoyed this, it was the kind of album i'd hoped to learn about from this process. The accessible end of the instrumental industrial noise metal genre was not a place i'd been before and i could see the merit in the album. Lots of driving drum work, layers of guitar noise and an inventive texture cant be denied. The absence of hilarious growly vocals was also a bonus

This works if you approach it like a drone record and let yourself be lulled by the repetition and mumble-shouting. Could’ve gone harder, though. Also, a real missed opportunity not to call a band the Brians.

Sounds like people just recorded their mess around sessions trying to figure out how to turn sounds into music. Not in a crazy bad way, like a science experiment way.

A little weird, but still had some cool guitar parts.

I enjoyed this at times. Other times felt songs went on too long.

This was my first encounter with this genre, so I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to say anything. A neutral 3 it is.

This is classified as noise rock. It is sonic abuse of bass and drums. Organized chaos. An assult on the senses, but I can see the direction of it. That doesn't make it good, but better than just noise. It was an interesting listen for sure. Not good, but interesting. Apparently the band started as a trio, but the singer left to make another band. That left the drummer and the bassist. The drummer became the new singer/drummer, and instead of investing in a mic stand, he just put the mic in his mouth and wailed onto the drums and sang with a mic in his mouth lol. So you have no idea what he is saying, it is just distorted noise, but it matches the rest of the noise going on. Favourite songs: 2 Towers, Crown of Storms, Dracula Mountain Least favourite songs: Wonderful Rainbow 3/5

years ago i heard jack black say he loved the idea of the show Battlebots but was bored to death watching Battlebots. i love the idea of lightning bolt, love the album artwork, love the song titles, but whenever i sit down to listen to it i'm bored outta my mind. i'll give it three stars cause the drumming's great, and i always hope some day i'll come around on it, and its abysmal ranking here bums me out when its still a million times more creative and fun than a lot of the records on this list.

Very noisy punk rock, semblance of a melody, great to rage out to, to smash things to. Kind of funny in that sense, knows exactly what it is.

A pretty good album, but no stand outs.

this was interestingly engaging, it was really chaotic and i enjoyed it

Interesting stuff, noisy rock.

I'm not sure what this was. Started strange and too much, then got good, then got to be going on too long and was annoying, then kept going and back to good. As a whole album I think it works and I enjoy the ride. Nothing stands out individually, and I'm not sure how I would feel about it piece meal.

Wow. This is massive. A tough listen but not necessarily to it's detriment. First half of the album I was battling the thought that this is either absolutely amazing or undeniably terrible. By the end of the record I must admit it was wearing thin. But I err on the side of amazing. But not in one sitting

78% Best: Assassins; 2 Towers; Crown of Storms Must-Hear? Not quite. Contrary to almost everyone on this site...I kinda enjoyed it? It's good background music.

Not terrible but definitely too grating at times

I for one liked this one. In all the chaos there are identifiable structures, grooves and riffs. But it is of course quite abrasive and the type of music requires a very specific mindset to enjoy. Dracula Mountain a highlight.

Absolute banter. Most interesting album on here.

I liked this more than I expected to.

Caught me on a good day I think...

This band sounds like if Death from Above 1979 didn't want to have commercial success. Pretty interesting. Something worth studying. Not exactly an album I would play over and over though.

-quite an interesting album for sure… not exactly the kind of thing I would listen to for pleasure, but still glad to have heard it. It’s very very overstimulating, but kind of in a fun, cool way. Always down for experimentation with noise and texture in music -Favorites are Assassins, Dracula Mountain, and Longstockings

Very unique. Glad it's on this list, not my thing but interesting hearing something completely out the realm of my knowledge that isn't shite. Enjoyed but probably wouldn't go and explore again.

I like the idea of this music. It's interesting. It isn't helping my headache right now though.

bananas.

Definitely pretty challenging and chaotic. I think it's pretty undeniably impressive, but I prefer my noise rock to be a bit more structured i.e. Jesus Lizard, Drive Like Jehu, etc.

Actually pretty interesting, very engaging, lots to focus on, definitely will get another couple listens to hear it all.

Interesting. Parts of it literally sound like metal to me. Clanging, tinging, ringing, etc. I was able to memorize all of the lyrics quickly, so I can sing along next time.

Noise rock with some electronic elements... not for me. But I think this is pretty cool. Not something I would ever want to listen to, though.

not very chill

Like a hypnotic headache but not nearly as bad as that sounds, in fact I quite like this.

Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex At first I was like "what is this load of old shit?", ready to give it 1 star... then it grabbed me by the head and shook me until I submitted "okay, okay, jaysus christ, I'll give you 2 stars!" ... alright, an extra star for the guerrilla tactics!

Much more enjoyable than expected.

I was expecting a lot worse, but it's really not that bad. Is it weird? Yes. Is it painful to listen to? Yeah a little bit. But there's some form of underlying musicality that I actually kinda like. 6/10 Would I listen again? Probably not
