Reviews (page 6 of 8)
This is a funky record no doubt, and there's plenty of effortless cool here too. But for some reason, nothing really reaches into my soul and really turns it on, you know? It's a competent funk record with a social justice warrior mindset, but it's kinda bland too. It's just lacking that extra special something to take it over the edge. But it's still a chill listening experience.
Not particularly interesting or engaging. Didn't catch my ear.
not as fun as other S&TFS albums
It started off good but got a bit dull towards the end.
Some good songs….
Moderately interesting funk.
3.5 stars. Funk and soul. A little lower energy than I'd prefer at times but it's still good. Standouts are "Family Affair" and the instrumental "My Gorilla Is My Butler".
Only knew “Family Affair” off of this album and always liked it along with his other hits. Cool album which snapshots the era it was produced.
It’s definitely sounds like a riot compared to Marvin Gaye’s What’s going on. It’s a fine album, I can’t imagine there is a funk album I’d give a 4. Very low ceiling, high floor. 5.9/10
One of the cool things about this list is you get to hear where great songs come from.
Some real tasty funk, but a lot of filler too.
Soul, funk, blues, jazz, and … yodeling? Did I hear yodeling?? This was a good listen, nice background or ambience music. If we could give half stars, this would be a 3.5. But it’s just not rise to the level of a 4.
Interesting and groovy for sure but not awesome. The mix felt pretty flat and uninteresting a number of times... like everything was all 'at the front' and so nothing was... Actually I kind of expected more from this one.
I know “Family Affair” from this album, I remember it on the radio, and have owned it on digital for many years. Great song. But I didn’t know anything else from the album. The rest of the album is mostly…. Well…. I guess I’d say it is unfocused. It all has a good groove, at moments great. But it all just sort of muddles around. Wikipedia states tge album “embraced the apathy, pessimism, and disillusionment”, and “explored a darker, more challenging sound”. They also note that the album came out during Sly Stone’s “period of escalated drug use”, and noted intra-band tensions. Sounds like Stone was in a downward spiral, and I can pick that up in the album. There are some good moments, but as I said, it’s all unfocused. Not enough melodies, not enough songs. Between 1967 had 1970, Sly and The Family Stone had 4x Top 10’s. But this album’s “Family Affair” would be their last Top 10. This album just sounds to me like a great band, starting to decline. There’s still hints of what they could do, but too much “Spaced Cowboy” and not enough “Family Affair”. I wonder what this might’ve been if Sly Stone didn’t self-produce it… Anyway, there’s one superb song, a couple of mediocre songs, and a lot of forgettable, but pretty funky grooves. Could’ve / should’ve been so much more. 3/5
Quiet funk doesn't do it for me, not my thing.
Some songs are great - some not :-) In summary 3 stars
Pretty good
Who doesn’t love some funk on a rainy Monday!?
There's A Riot Goin' On is an okay album at best. The songs all sounded fine and the singer did have a cool voice at points but the songs did sound really samey outside of a few tracks. I also don't get why silence needed its own track especially when it was just 4 seconds long. Beyond that, i don't really have too much to say about this album Best Song: Runnin' Away Worst Song: Just Like a Baby
It was ok. Nothing really stood out to me
There is, a mostly funky one.
The front end of this album was much stronger then the later half. Fun funk/soul music. There wasn't anything too memorable here but it was overall an enjoyable listen.
Not my favorite Sly album, but it’s an interesting funk piece that gets a little deeper soul. It’s a more mature sound that many other funk and soul artists of the era were also adapting (like Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, or Stevie Wonder).
Love Sly's sound!
What's goin' on?
Pretty chill and a good vibe. There's the big hit of course and the rest are good for general chill background music.
S'grand but I prefer my riots to sound a lot noisier
I liked this more than Stand. Just some nice funk all around.
I just don’t really know, but I think I’m at a 3. For my tastes and my sensibilities, I think I came into this album with the wrong expectations, which is to say an evolution of the funky, polished, catchy idealism that was present on Stand!, and that expectation broke itself down very quickly. This album is a bit darker, a bit less polished, a bit less “catchy” in the sense that there’s definitely no Everyday People-esque songs on this album, and almost certainly a lack of the idealism from Stand!. I tried to shift myself into the mood once it became apparent, but to me, there’s a sort of ethereal emptiness to this album that stopped me from ever really getting hooked in. Even with such funky instrumentation, the rougher, obviously re-recorded, re-dubbed, and re-taped vocals kept pulling me away from that instrumentation in a way that I think negatively affected my perception of the individual songs; they all felt like demo tapes to me. As an entire album, I think the looser style of the instrumentation here is very effectively realized, and with the context of the drug usage and loneliness that affected the production of this album, it’s really kind of a miracle that this exists as coherently as it does. However, I just don’t think all of those elements hit on any of my sensibilities. There is something kind of intoxicating about this album though – I can see myself coming back to listen again and try to understand it better, but I also get the feeling this album is never going to fully click for me, and that’s where I’m stuck with a 3.
Kinda groovy, but it's not really doing it for me. Interesting enough though.
It's funky, it's groovy.
I wish I had more to say about this album - I can see why it's included, but wasn't something I really got into. Maybe just not a great day for it to be on my list? 3/5
Pretty cool stuff
Ik vind dit wel lekker. Beetje rock funk met veel wah-wah pedals en enorm overdubbed
This is a hard rating for me. There’s been some albums that I didn’t enjoy AND didn’t understand them being on the list. I can see the importance of this one but it just didn’t grab me in any way. It’s not that I didn’t like it though.. maybe it just wasn’t a good day for this one to come up.
Rock-soul. Ni fu ni fa.
Psychedelic funk. Rollo.
Perfect background music, upbeat vibes and vague lyrics
Great album
I didn't enjoy this as much as I hoped. But bad and a real groove in places but I felt a bit let down by a few tracks.
Nice and funky, but smooth, not crazy. Felt groovy. And old boss of mine use to always say "Family Affaaaiiir" and I never knew it was a song lol.
Jotenkin aika synnkä funk-levy. Erikonen ja yllättäväkin jopa siis! 3/5
Ihan hyvää funkkista, mut ei nouse ihan neloseen asti.
7/10
Best thing about this site is getting me to listen to artists that I'm "aware of" but have never really "listened to". Funky stuff here.
On this date, 1/29/2024 I am not really in the mood for S&TFS but I shall endure.
This album is cool. I can't really articulate why I feel that way, but there's something about the way it hits your earholes. Songs on this album are like a time machine. Some transport you back to the coolest 70s night clubs, while others place you on the set of a classic porno film. Great fun, either way. There's even a weird yodelling track that somehow works too. Plus, ending the record with "Thank You for Talking to Me Africa" is a perfect sendoff. 👌 I can't see this album ever getting a regular rotation, but that's no big deal. "There's A Riot Going On" was an enjoyable listen while drinking coffee & cleaning up the kitchen on this miserable Monday morning. 👍👍
Funky yet also kind of relaxing? It was making me seriously drowsy listening to this, even though it's got a nice groovy thing going on. More of a 3.5.
Funky
Yeah, not sure what else to say. It's funky cool, but not extraordinary.
Groovy drug fueled bop of an album
I don’t know what I thought about this album. I listened to it twice and I still can’t decide. I like the chill vibes and relaxing tone, but it isn’t something I look forward listening to.
Some funky music. Ish.
Eher 3
It’s ok
Groovy.
not my kind of music, but i honor the effort
Very funky, but I wasn't a huge fan.
First time hearing this, and I like it quite a bit! Very funky
Family Affair is a song Dad sang quite often. Glad to see it end up on this list, the album however did not get me as excited as that one particular song. I think we have gotten a Sly album before but while I enjoyed having this on in the background, nothing really jumped out at me.
Didn’t love. Wish I enjoyed the album more.
Good funk/psychedelic soul album. Includes the hit, "Family Affair." Sound quality is notably bad.
0:00.
No feelings either way. Nothing really stood out, nor was anything particularly bad. 3/5
Very chill and funky album. I enjoyed this quite a bit, but only as background music, as it doesn’t feel like it has enough oomph for me to go out of my way and listen to it. 3.5/5
Some great funk-infused blues-pop-rock explorations here. I suppose we could name other genres, too. A real mash-up and very well done. Lyrics are reflective of many of the tensions going on culturally at the time. Musicians who perform on this album are super. Gets a little psychedelic for my own tastes, but it really does make sense for the time.
Psychedelic funk. Rollo.
Seemed ok, but not the best funk album I've ever heard. More introspective than groovy.
Fav song: family affair
Groovy. Me like groovy. It doesn't fully get there for me, but it's honest work. Good listen.
Ah, it was alright
Hlasy krásne, inštrumentalizácia príšerná...
Good stuff, oldies but goodies.
Great funk guitar to open the album… and it gets better from there! I didn’t recognize any songs, but a definite realist en! High 3
This album is cool. Groovy, but sad, when I read the lyrics and background of the album. I like the second half more than the first. Favorite(s): Luv N' Haight, Family Affair, You Caught Me Smilin', Time, Runnin' Away, Thank You for Talkin' to Me, Africa
3 stars - some really great tracks
good evening vibe but theres better Sly
Funky skunky clunky, I like it. Would play when people are in my house but not going to reach for it anytime soon tbh.
Very chill and mellow. Very few lyrics.
Started off slow but kicked it up towards the end to the point I was sad it was over.
Some funky soul brotha stuff! Lets go! How wild would it be to have lived in the 70s during the height of the disco ages lol. Very interesting times. I guess I can say I did live 6months of the 70s lol. Pretty alright. Probably wouldn't seek it out again though. But entertaining nonetheless. 3 stars.
nice
Interesting, it was an easy and fun listen. Not so memorable though, except for the yodel part.
3,5
A little funky for my taste but a great album!
funk de fondo not bad
I own a couple of Sly Stone's earlier albums and they're pretty good. This is my first time listening to this particular album and i'm completely underwhelmed. It hasn't a patch on the other two. I'm pretty disappointed in this, was expecting more.
pretty good, ikke noe mega wow, men fortsatt god s 3.5
Good but a little bit too much for me today. Heavy album. Does belong on this list.
Super funky, do enjoy the cadence and simplicity but sometimes the simplicity leads the album to be a little too Jammy
Beats are catchy and funky, but I think this album is really hurt by the mixing. Vocals are distant and muddy and it hurts the sound as a whole. If things were crisper would probably be a 4
Did not love it. Good grooves, hard to understand the lyrics. Not bad, but not great.
Cool, funky, interesting instrumentation for 1971. Definitely lays some hip-hop groundwork
Good background music while working. Some good funk and soul to start the day.
Funk, funk, and more funk
I was unfamiliar with this band. The music was varied and pretty good.
Pretty cool sound but not so strong songs...
I really like this band because it's diverse and captures a 70s sound well while also adding some jazz elements. Overall, it wouldn't be something I'd listen to on my own, but I did enjoy checking out something new. Favorite track: Thank You for Talkin' to Me, Africa
A pretty average album
Not my favourite but can appreciate the talent.
Not Sly enough. Not Stoned enough.
needed more cowboy
This was more funk than I was ready for, but the lyrics were on point and are still poignant today. Dark while feeling light. I like it.
It’s exciting to see an album by Sly & the Family Stone! I previously heard Stand! and thought this was a pretty great album, although it was the first I’d heard of them. Today should be a fun day if this is as good as Stand! so let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Family Affair I’ll be honest, I was expecting more from this album. It didn’t seem to have quite the same level of energy as Stand! and, at least to my ears, seemed a little more halfhearted. Family Affair stood out to me with that ear worm of a hook, but not much else was really notable here. That’s not to say it was bad, but it was really that good either. It sad to say, but then was a very middle-of-the-road album for me. I wanted more energy! More reason to shake the rump!
Fuaaa (LNB)
I've never totally enjoyed this Sly and the Family Stone album. It's a little slower and lacks the enjoyable funk element to many of the tracks that I tend to like in their work.
Pretty Funky, doubt I'll ever listen again.
Fun. And fine.
Funky, fresh, fun. 3/5
Sly is cool but there’s so much funk/soul from this era that I like better. It’s got a sloppy garage band sound to it which is kind of cool at times but I do wish it had better production value. I love raw recordings and imperfections but I think you need a higher caliber band to pull it off, it sort of falls flat for me. The writing isn’t really impressive which is fine if you have a great band, but this ain’t it. There are some sly songs that I do really like but this album just wasnt super exciting to me.
It’s fine
Sometimes the drugs do work …. But not always.
Funky stuff, they know how to lay down a groove. Would be better if they kept a bit more focus, it sometimes feels like the sound track of a drug party that I did not want to be invited to.
I enjoyed this, some recognisable songs, but I was expecting it to be more lively
I can merit a good album but I feel there was some things lacking here. I felt a bit disappointed as I was looking forward to this one.
Previously I’ve only been familiar with the greatest hits. Today I was so slammed with doing other stuff. I listened to this in five minute bursts. And did not appreciate it. I guess I just wasn’t feeling it. But I realised I had to give it another shot and give it the listen it deserved. So, cat on chest, I sat with no distractions and I’m not sure I felt any different. I looked up the lyrics and I found them quite nuanced and in some cases profound. The silence of the ‘riot’ song was ver clever. I also like a funky beat. So why the two together didn’t move me in any way, I cannot quite say. I know that I hate the yodelling song. And runnin’ away reminded me too much of Brotherhood of Man. (Look up BoM song Angelo - frothy nonsense). It strikes me this may be the kind of album that if I listen to it 10 more times I might feel more kindly towards it. But I don’t have that time. Today it sits squarely in the middle with added brownie points for Family Affair.
I didn't have time for a thorough listen but I really like Larry Graham's bass playing and Sly Stone's voice. "Family Affair" is a favorite. I love the beginning of this album but started losing interest after the title song. Really didn't like "Runnin' Away".
Everything was fine until Spaced Cowboy.
One of the greatest names for a band.
This album had a couple familiar songs but most of it was an interesting take on soul and funk in the 70s. Maybe not the most popular of sly’s songs on this album but it had a good range of styles/instrumentals/beats. Feel like this album dug a little deeper. Felt like childish gambino would have used styles like this. Overall it’s solid. 6.4/10
3/5 This was a very funky album! It was groovy but I didn't understand half of the lyrics. The vocals were reduced to "Mmmmm's" and "oh yea's" for me so I don't really remember any song in particular as that helps me keep them separate. It wasn't painful though, so it still gets 3 stars.
Not the best not the worst! Knew one song which suprised me but this played nicely in the background and had some funky grooves. Like a Tesco Value Jimi Hendrix I guess?
This album totally had a “stereophonic recording“ sticker on the front. A long way from my normal listening choices, but actually works for later on a Friday night after a long drive. Such a sparse mix, too. No instrument really gets in the way of the others. Wait. There was yodeling. Clearly some good drugs were being consumed.
Solid, but nothing I was a huge fan of. An enjoyable worthwhile listen.
Pretty cool record with some great songs, albeit they kind of lost their signature sound and went in another direction. Still the murky nature of the songs works out quite well. It was a great response to Gaye's What's Going On! Favorite lyrics: - My only weapon is my pen. And the frame of mind I'm in. - And another child grows up to be Somebody you'd just love to burn - You can't cry 'cause you'll look broke down. But you're cryin' anyway 'cause you're all broke down. Favorite tracks: Luv N' Haight, Just Like A Baby, Family Affair, Runnin' Away. 7,5 out of 10
Yup, I just love funk
Original and experimental, but repetitive we hell. Whole album was very enjoyable. Hell of a end song too. 3/5
Really funky and cool sound.
Is okayyy
p223. 1971. 3.5 stars Classy 70s funk, the source of everything Prince went on to become. Close your eyes and you can see the flares and platform shoes. Points deducted for filler.
I thought that I would like this more than I did. It was pretty good yet simultaneously a disappointment.
3.5
So far, my favorite new exposures from this project have been funk & soul. This one started off well but I didn't find myself staying with it to the end (and through a second listen). I'm not sure what's missing for me. It's good, but I was hoping for more. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Not really my genre, but enjoyable.
family affair is excellent but beyond that i really struggled to connect.
Sounds counter intuitive but it lacks a lot of the soul I was expecting. Kind of verging on soundtrack levels. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not what I was looking for.
BASS, also a nice funky album, i loved "Thank You for Talkin' to Me, Africa"
Luv N'Haight- 6 Just Like a Baby- 5 Poet- 5 Family Affair- 7 Africa Talks To You- 7 Brave and Strong- 6.3 (You Caught Me) Smilin'- 6.5 Time- 5 Spaced Cowboy- 4 Runnin' Away- 7.5 Thank You For Talkin' to Me, Africa- 7
Funk que nonl estoy acostumbrado a escuchar. No estuvo mal
70s funk
Decent, could probably do with another listen
~~~~~~~>>>>
I expected I’d love this, but it feels a bit messy to me. Not saying it’s out of time or they’re playing the wrong notes or anything but… all a bit muddy and directionless.
3.5/5 it kinda grew on me by the end
Setting aside all the profound sociopolitical circumstances out of which this album arose, this music is deep funk, so deep Sly can yodel and make it work, make it as black as the space that cowboy is floating in, so deep you can just fall into it and never stop falling. Amazing stuff.
Really great album from a great era in music. It is still very listenable today, unlike some of the music from then. Some of the tracks really give me Al Green vibes, which I like very much. Stand Outs: Family Affair, Runnin’ Away, Thank You for Takin’ Me to Africa Others: Luv N Haight, Just Like A Baby, Brave And Strong, You Caught Me Smilin’, Time. 3.5
6.5/10 gueno pero nada especial
Standouts: Family Affair, Runnin' Away, Thank You for Talkin' to Me Africa Every song sounds great. Funky. 3/5
3/12, 25%
Pretty good, very awesome sound
Chillsauce
I don't know. Pretty good but not too good
Sly & the Family Stone are a psychadelic soul/funk band. I have never heard of psychadelic soul/funk so I was unsure what I was in for. Psychadelic funk carries the sensibilities of funk (music with heavy bass grooves) with a psychadelic writing style, and experimentation. Sly Stone's voice is teriffic when he actually sings. By times he takes to wailing which it slightly irritating. In one song, Spaced Cowboy, he yodels the chorus, which is very weird, but not necessarily in a bad way. Another interesting note: There's a Riot Goin' On is just 4 seconds of silence. It kind of, in a roundabout way, speaks to the state of things in the late 60's - early 70's, almost offering up a moment of silence for those struggling. Larry Graham played the shit out of the bass on this record. Interestingly, Larry is credited with inventing the "slapping" technique used on the electric bass (which is showcased in a big way on this record). Overall, an interesting listen today. Not something I would necessarily gravitate to, but not bad. Favourite songs: "Thank You For Talkin' To Me, Africa", Love N' Haight, Family Affair Least favourite songs: Just Like a Baby, Spaced Cowboy, Runnin' Away, (You Caught Me) Smilin' 3/5
J'adore la basse. Mais, parfois, les longs jams s'égarent et je perds ma concentration.
I was excited when this popped up, but I guess I thought I’d like it more than I actually did. Probably deserves another listen before a rating, but we’ll go with 3 stars for now…
I got really excited when I saw Sly & The family stone. This album is really good funk and soul with the kinda jazz sound I don't really mind. Good album to groove and sway in your seat kind of music. But I can tell you this isn't their best work.... Anyway, enjoyed Luv N Haight and Family Affair. Don't know if would go back and listen to this album again, but always enjoys this guys voice. 2.5 to 3 for me
Du funk engagé, quelques pièces captivantes, mais sans plus.
This was a very quiet riot. I was expecting way more funk and bluster. Still an easy listen though.
Familiar with a few of their well-known singles and such this record took a few extra listens to appreciate. I like funk, I like soul, but this flavor of funky soul wasn't quite my bag. Better than other stuff tho.
This one was pretty boring for me, sadly. I maybe don't have the background to know why this is important. 2.5/5
2 much funk for me
Alright, not really my style
J'espère que c'est le dernier album de la semaine avec un drapeau américain sur la pochette. Ça commence à bien faire maintenant.
L'album était sympa mais ne réussit pas à mettre un terme à l'horrible série d'albums moyens offerts par Robert. Ce dernier nous a d'ailleurs pondu un nouvel album de Costello, que nous saurons accueillir comme il se doit. En d'autres termes, on va lui faire sa fête.
Enjoyed. Funky as shit. Family Affair is clearly the stand out track (and the only one I knew before today). (You Caught Me) Smilin’ and Luv ‘N’ Haight are other highlights. Lost me with the yodelling Spaced Cowboy
What this lacks in funk it more than makes up for in soul. Would I put this on repeat? No. Would I listen to it again. Definitely. "Poet" and "You Caught Me Smilin'" are the standouts.
Funky! Bin überrascht, dass dieses Album aus den 70ern stammt.
Empieza un poco flojo pero va mejorando con cada canción. Hay algunas que me han parecido muy bonitas y el hecho de que Turnstile haga un homenaje a este grupo lo mejora todo (a la canción de cierre de este álbum en la canción de cierre de su álbum, curiosamente, aunque la de este álbum hace a su vez referencia a otra canción anterior del mismo grupo. Mucho Texto, Ana, cállate ya.)
Definitely an album of the 70’s! Not really my thing.
This album was the exact definition of average. The music was fine. The singing was fine. The album was....dare I say it.......fine.
Funky
This is the 2nd sly and the family stone album that has come up for me. It's super funky and great to listen to. I really enjoyed it. My favorite tracks were family affair and luv n haight. They rule this genre of funk.
Real funky, great bass play. Definitely something to groove to.
in a word, this album was funky. more important than the music on this album was the social commentary it provided. it's clear a lot of thought went into the album creation, and i do admire the title track's length of four seconds long. the american flag is an interesting choice for the album cover, too. it's all very appropriate for its release in 1971. billy preston on keyboards on this album! what a highlight. so many times throughout this album did the keyboards stand out. it may have even been the best part of the album! a lot of this album was real smooth. there was some weirder songs (looking at you "spaced cowboy") but i can appreciate them. and the lyrics are what really hit home with this album anyway.
So I'm not super versed on Sly & the Family Stone, but I guess I was expecting something a little more like "Everyday People" and "Dance to the Music". That said, "Riot" was overall a little bit more soulful funk. While definitely baseline enjoyable, it wasn't quite in my wheelhouse. As far as soulful funk music goes, though, I can see where this is among the best. Happy to experience it and get a little more educated on this type of music, which I know almost nothing about!
Good but a little meandering
Very funky and nice to listen to. Doesn't quite reach P-Funk levels but I liked it. Not in the mood to write a lengthy review. If you're in the mood for funk this is a good place to start.
I hear what many people say about this being quite a challenging listen, with pop soul highs only really there on the singles and some quite angry grooves forming the bulk of the album.
This was perfectly listenable and enjoyable but nothing jumped out to me. In fairness I was also working and this perhaps wasn’t the most work friendly album. Would listen to again in a more relaxed setting
The album starts with a lovely mood, and these funky songs sound nice to me. However, while the music kept going in my ears, I was gradually losing interest in what I was listening to. Maybe my mood was decreasing, but I can't rate it with more than three stars.
Funky
Not the best sly...
Get your funk on!
You can definitely hear some of the beginnings of hip hop in the record. Or at least some things that influenced the beginning of hip hop. I usually associate Sly with more upbeat tunes like "thank you for letting me be myself" and "everyday people" but this record is a little slower and darker. Spaced Cowboy however is just not good. one of the weirdest most out of place songs i've heard on any album possibly. didn't add any songs to spotify
Produktivno? Jako kvalitetno. Na prvo slušanje mi je samo okej. Nažalost. Bit će prilike za ponavljanjem.
Nice 70s era album. Certainly a solid
legalzinho , soul dançante e tals
Nice closing track. Decent chill listen.
Best Song: Family Affair. The male and female lead voices provide the perfect contrast for one another. The female vocalist in particular has such fantastic intonation on the line "it's a family affair" that I'm glad it's the last the thing the song leaves you with as it fades out. Worst Song: Just Like a Baby. Too slow for my taste. The vocal scatting which seems to imitate a baby's cry at times is impressive in how it's able to scrape something musical out of such a non-musical thing, but it's a lot of cleverness for not much payoff. Overall: A long, meandering jam album that takes its time to hit all its marks. That relaxed delivery somewhat depreciates its value as something to be actively listened to, but makes it a good candidate for background music.
A little bit too funky for my taste but I didn't have trouble enjoying it. It's an energetic and fun album that I'm sure funk/soul fans will appreciate.
Pretty good funky stuff! Not really my thing but inoffensive.
It's an alright album. I don't know if it's my vibe, but it's not bad.
Dig the funk.
Funky, but good
I wasn't really in the mood for funk/soul stuff, but it was good nonetheless. Nothing out of the extraordinary, though.
Nice funk soul album, but I heard a lot better within the genre
3.5 i can see how this influenced a lot of artists. my favorite songs were "family affair" & you caught me smilin"
Du bon funk, s'écoute bien mais rien de sensationnel
Interesting if nothing else by its influence on funk, definately a product of its time. I liked some of the rhythmic tribal beats but otherwise not really my cup of tea..
I was never a fan of Family Affair so the biggie on this album was a negative. It moved well enough as one would expect from Sly but it wasn't as good as the last Sly offering.
Nice slappy bass and funky grooves. Sly was apparently stoned out of his gourd when recording this so his vocals here aren’t his best work, I think Stand was a better record overall but this has some nice moments.
Funky grooves. Really dug Spaces Cowboys
Still looking for a perfect funk record, but this is not it. I’m more in the Parliament camp than Sly or James Brown.
I think this is probably one of those albums that's more important than it is enjoyable & rewarding to listen to.
Perhaps an import record at its time, not a personal favorite.
Listened to on 2/2/22 3/5 Favorite song: Just like a baby, Spaced Cowboy All in all good vibes - very 70s easy listening
Funky as fuck. Definitely don't know much of Sly & The Family Stalone but I'm digging it. Poet is really fun. I have heard Family Affair though, honestly it's just ok for me. Unfortunately as the album went on the songs weren't as good for me, which is a same since I really liked a few songs.
I know they have a cult following, but i'm not a subscriber. doesn't sound particularly groundbreaking to my ears
Funk is a nice switch up.
A hot chunk slice of 70's funk.
The transition from soul to funk. A bit outdated, but groovy
Some good sounds
I'm a little familiar with Sly and the Family Stone but I've never really explored their discography too much beyond Dance to the Music. I was going in expecting some funky beats. While the beats are certainly funky, that magic touch just isn't there. Reading a little about the making I see there was lots of drugs involves. Also the social setting of the US played a roll too but being 50 yeads removed causes it to hit not as hard.
idk.mostly ignored.
Nice
It was fun to listen to this album. My first Sly and Family Stone album. Love the drum machine and the grooves are really good.
A couple of my fav songs of theirs on here
Ritmos soul, R&B, psicodélica, muy típicos de los 70. Fácil para desconectar y trasladarse a otra época. Sin destacar especialmente, gusta su estilo.
But was there really
It's alright, he has done better songs before
Funkt und soult. Die Umstände der Entstehung sind fast noch interessanter als das Album.
It was kinda nuts to grow up in the late 80's / early 90's listening to rap before all of the restrictions around sampling began. But I listened to CDs all the time in the 90's before I did what most young adults did with their CD collections... That is to buy an external hard drive, spend a week dropping all the music into it and going back to Second Spin, Amoeba or Plan 9 or wherever to sell them back. For a VERY long time, De La Sou's first two albums (3 Feet High and Rising / De La is Dead) were unavailable to stream. You could find a 3-Feet CD on ebay going for like $100 or more. Clearing music samples was arduous, time consuming and expensive for music labels after a court decision in 1991. After that, licensing music to use as samples slowed to a trickle. But during that time where artists recorded with no regard was incredible. Our exposure to obscure artists by way of sampling was amazing because it was everywhere. Unbeknownst to most of us De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, 3rd Bass, etc. heavily, HEAVILY used samples in their recordings. Samples of songs we'd never heard or been exposed to. And even today, 40 years later, a song that I just assumed was completely created by an artist I realize wasn't. Like today, when I'm listening to this album for the first time, I get a whiff of "oh! I've heard that beat before" I get super excited and follow it down a rabbit hole. And sure enough, five mins. of racking my brain I come across it. "Three Minute Rule" By the Beasties sampled Brave & Strong and another one... "Poet" sampled by De La Soul on "Description" just makes my day. So, today when I'm listening to There's a Riot Goin' and I think, 'this is old, outdated, has little importance, etc." I'm able to stop and consider its impact on the artists that I grew up with which prompts me to do more. Like ACTUALLY click the Wikipedia link for an album for once. The terms 'apathy' and 'pessimism' leaped out at me and yeah. I get that from this album. There are some good grooves but also a lot of apathy here. https://www.whosampled.com/Sly-%26-the-Family-Stone/Poet/
Pretty good, not one I would have heard without taking on this list. Family affair and spaced cowboy were my favourites. Did not enjoy the instrumental/alternate versions as much
Ganz cool für nebenbei
This record slapped pretty good! Funky as fuck, total vibe. Great playing, especially the bass.
Yeah, not bad... not quite as straight-up funky as I remember, but some cool things happening on this album. Not my absolute favorite, but still pretty cool.
Funky
Track 01 - 3/5 Track 02 - 3.25/5 Track 03 - 3/5 Track 04 - 3.5/5 Track 05 - 3.25/5 Track 06 - 2.75/5 Track 07 - 3/5 Track 08 - 3/5 Track 09 - 3.5/5 Track 10 - 3.25/5 Track 11 - 2.5/5 Track 12 - 3/5 Track 13 - 2.5/5 Track 14 - 3/5 Track 15 - 2.75/5 Track 16 - 2.75/5 Overall: 3/5 Album Art: 3.25/5
Eh. Instrumentals were kinda boring. Songs that weren't instrumentals were rather forgettable. It was fine for background if I'm in a funky mood but definitely wasn't my favorite.
Funky, got a bit samey
i’ve heard of them and I know if you songs by them so I was excited when I first saw this was the album however it was honestly really bored nothing was wrong with it but I just don’t remember any specific part and I didn’t really like it
Aardig muziekje, maar mij iets te jazzy. ***
3/5
A paranoid and soupy stew. Difficult to decipher, this isn't a favourite, though there are a couple of moments which stand out. Production is *very* strange.
I have no thoughts
Enjoyed it, more mellow than I expected from Sly. On the fence on whether I would give it a second listen.
Pretty old school funk
A bit patchy and a little too smooth for my tastes. Not as raw and funky as my favourite Sly & The Family Stone.
Not the kind of music I normally listen to, but I felt at home.
Super distinct from Stand, I think both to its benefit and detriment. It's not as fun to listen to, more challenging, darker, and there aren't any songs that grabbed me as immediate hits (can't really get behind Family Affair, unfortunately, though the lyrics are really good). But listen closer (I went through this probably 4-5 times in total) and there's some really really cool choices on this, Spaced Cowboy being one of my favorites. High 3 because I respect this a lot more than I enjoyed listening to it. Saved: Luv N' Haight*, Time, Spaced Cowboy, Runnin' Away
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Luv N' Haight, Family Affair Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Probably the least fun I've had listening to a funk album, and that's not a diss.
Basis of alot of rap music and many samples.
Favoriete nummers: - Time
Groovy
6/10 funky
More my kinda thing ! 3/4 ?
Nota: 3/5 Hi sento en James Brown i en Prince. Àlbum funk que acaba massa distorsionat. Les últimes pistes se'm fan llargues i repetitives.
Really digging the second track on this.
Ik vond het in het begin nogal veel filler en niet echt iets speciaals maar de laatste nummers gingen hard en hebben wel wat goed gemaakt. you caught me smilin , space cowboy en vooral running away ga ik zeker en vast vaker beluisteren.
What else do you say but, FUNK?!
lots of bass slappin on this one
It was pretty alright
Actually not too bad.
good not great. a lot of people have sampled this.
Bin noch nicht so richtig warm geworden damit.
It's as if 'running away' and 'family affair' are by a different band. The rest of the album never gets close to that level. Some nice grooves, but too slow and ponderous - it needs an injection of energy.
Weird mixed feelings about this one.
Didn't listen to it all but what I heard was nice
Entertaining and funky. Some unusual production too
Nice, but I'd say there are better representatives of this genre.
kind of Funk-Lite. okay, just nothing that really grabs me. 3/5
De eerste helft van het album vond ik nogal chaotisch. Maar na een tijdje beviel het me wel
Feeling a strong 6-7 on this one - solid grooves, shoutout the bot. saxophone go brrrrrrr
Lekker, iets te funky voor mijn smaak maar fijn om eens te draaien.
Kende ik alleen van naam, best leuk om eens te luisteren.
Best oké en zeker niet slecht, maar ook niet heel erg blijven hangen.
Lekker funky en groovy 🤩
Vaikeita valintoja. Osa biiseistä oli menevää kamaa, mutta osa oli semmosta semikamaa. 2-3 tähteä, Arvotaan 3, jos Brian oli 2.
Primera presa de contacte amb Sly Stone. Aquest és el darrer disc de la seva època daurada, on donen bona mostra de la seva base funk amb una clara obertura a tota classe de gèneres, des del rock fins al disco (aquí hi ha la primera cançó de la història amb una caixa de ritmes). Variat, inspirat, amb cançons inconformistes, amb bones progressions i una cuidada producció. M'ha agradat per la barreja de sonoritats i estils, però que alhora sona cohesionada. Interessant.
Rock-soul.
Not a particularly interesting album. Good for background music but nothing more.
Was like one long jam
Funk, soul. Interesante.
Not bad at all!
Veldig kult med litt funk. Mange kule grooves, bra bassing, mye kult å lese om dette albumet. Tror likevel ikke det er noe jeg har så lyst å høre på igjen. Klarer ikke forklare hva det er, men tror jeg bare mistet interessen halvveis gjennom. Får gi det en 3
WARUM SCHON WIEDER SO VIEL INSTRUMENTAL. Bezahlts die Sänger richtig, dann liefern die auch auf jedem Track. Zefix. Klar auch nochmal 3 Songs ohne Voice Tonspur auf die Scheibe geschmiert. Warum nicht. Nun zum Album an sich: ist halt da wa. Ob ichs gehört haben MUSS, da stelle ich mal ein Fragezeichen dahinter. Ich habs jedenfalls gehört. Was ist der Witz an "There's a Riot Going on"? 4 Sekunden Stille? Große Kunst. Endlich wird mal die Fresse gehalten. Auf Spaced Cowboy wird einfach Gejodelt?! Müssen geile Drogen damals gewesen sein. Mit Afrika wird viel gespochen und sich dann nochmal recht ausführlich auf 7:16 dafür bedankt. Isch koi schlechte Musik ned würd ich sagen. Aber hat mich jetzt nix ergriffen und in seinen Bann gezogen. Let's leave it like that. Werd's nimmer hören. War heute aber auch ned im Mood für diese Musik. Daher 3*
Hmm, there were a few on here that I enjoyed but I have to say some of them merged together. I thought I liked funk but perhaps I only have a limited capacity for it. It was a bit of a schlep towards the end.
Fine for background music. Found it hard to engage with directly.
Nice 70s funk
Classic, defining funk sound!! Good album!
Weirdly flat production really brings this down. It’s also not nearly as fun as I remember it, all feels very subdued.
Hits and slow instrumentals. But I don't know. Freaky deeky though!
Some great funky rock, lots of good bass riffs and black vocalists.
This was good fun but not as good as the other Sly album we've had.
Pretty generically fine to listen to, nothing caught my ear, but provided good inoffensive background tunes.
Lying around in a bed making sweet music
this kinda goes hard wtf? british boyband rock but a little harder than the beatles and a little bit \"drier\" if that makes any sense, like someone wrung the beatles out and their hair got greasier and they stopped wearing matching suits. thats just the energy i'm getting i have no idea if this is actually what they look like. it's also giving me sing street/the cure energy. interesting. really like her actually. best described as \"pirate rock\" i think lmao
Fun album, prefer the more vocal approach he takes with his other albums though
I’ve tried so many times to get into it, but I just can’t. I love funk, I love things inspired by this record; I just do not love this record.
Good, but not really my cup of tea. Dont think ill come back to it. Family Affair is pretty great though
Not really my style personally. I think the music is kinda boring. I guess its ok but its not my favourite. It feels more like background music to me. There was some songs i would definitely listen to again but overall there werent really many good songs. Last song is just long for no reason. (Listened to original not extended).
each song had me curious but apparently im not as funky as i thought, saved 1/16
Disappointed that I found this one boring. The last Sly & The Family Stone I had was great but this one just faded into the background.
This was fine — maybe I just wasn’t in the mood?
Funk but much slower than expected. Kind of got bored of it
I guess it's important and all but really couldn't dig it.
Not o big fun of folk album, this one was quite enjoyable 2/5
This was a huge disappointment. I was ready to funk up my morning, but this was anything but. The songs are either annoying, boring or not very good at all. Reading that Family Affair was among their biggest hits was also baffling. That was an outright bad song. There's a Riot Going On? Where? Not in this album. Songs like Spaced Cowboy and Runnin Away are going on here, and it's all just a big shame.
Not really my tjing
