Reviews (page 8 of 9)
There's probably some chance I've heard some of these songs before but I don't really remember it. Kind of sad to not see some of there more popular songs on here. Some of these sound a lot like Tears for Fears.
Jangly electronic rock. I went into this blind, knowing Blue Monday but very little else. It was fun, and I can see why this is an important album, but I wasn't in the right mood for it.
Average
Even though I did not know a single song on the album beforehand, it was a very pleasant listen. A nice balance between high energy (almost disco) vibes and ambient synth, this must be one of my favorite new wave albums.
Lepposaa menoa alusta loppuun.
3.5
Not gonna lie, actually liked this more than I thought I would
Dancey. I kind of preferred them when they had a more post-punk influence. Still, this is inoffensive and catchy. Favorite track: "The Perfect Kiss"
This always was at its best when they switched to instrumental parts. Not because the singing was bad, but because then interesting things started to happen, whereas the verses and choruses were a snoozefest. That's why I enjoyed the second half of "Sunrise" and the subsequent "Elegia" most. I don't think I'll revisit the rest of it. 2/5 - below average
boring 2/5
was not a fan at the start. 'Eligia' is my favorite of the album. Definitely something I'll be studying to. meh. 2,5
didn't have a favorite song. kinda boring.
The first half was fine but the second half was really hard to get through
There are some cool new wave moments, but this guy just can’t sing.
Love the first song but the rest was the usual synth pop
This was a broodier version of The Cure done in the style of bad karaoke.
not good not bad so i would give 2.5/5 if i could.
Love Vigilantes - 3.5/5 The Perfect Kiss - 3/5 This Time Of Night - 2.5/5 Sunrise - 2.5/5 Elegia - 4/5 Sooner Than You Think - 3/5 Sub-Culture - 3/5 Face Up - 3/5
I like a lot of new wave stuff… but not all new wave stuff.
It’s very much not my genre. I liked Love Vigilantes, but from there it’s just too synthy for me and the vocals just don’t do it for me. And I’m normally the first person to defend vocals that most people don’t like. I did quite like the way Elegia built up, but not enough that I’d want to listen to it again. Fav song: Love Vigilantes Least fav: Sub-culture
Vocally underwhelming. Think there's something beautiful about all the remaining members of Joy Division continuing to make music together after Ian Curtis died but choosing not to keep using the Joy Division name. But musically I'm not a big fan. Favourite song: Sooner Than You Think Least: The Perfect Kiss
Generally like New Order but the vocals on this album are almost hair-raisingly bad.
Alright
Nothing I want to listen to again. Most of it was just on in the background, but the last few songs were really something I didn't like. 2.5 stars rounded down
Didn't irritate too much.
Good New Order album not the best but a lot to choose from
This is what my dad's nickname for me was
There was one pretty good song (it wasn't the one I recognised either).
not somwthing i would listen to
Is this guy related to the Hapsburgs? Why does he look like that on the cover? Ok, it's such a bummer that this could be AMAZING, but I absolutely despise this guy's vocals. It's taking me out of it completely. I think that's exactly why 'Elegia' is my favorite song on this album: a blissful instrumental and that's it. I honestly have such a hard time rating this. On one hand, I love the music; on the other, I hate the singing. 'This Time of Night' is fire, though. I don't get why he has to do that hUAaaUah every five seconds in each song. It ruins everything for me. I fucking hate myself for giving this a 2, but I just cannot bring myself to rate it any higher THANKS to the vocalist. Like, everything is on point, each instrument? Perfect. He sings fine, then out of nowhere, he just starts doing that stupid, annoying voice that's just slapping me in the face. Just for that, I can't do it any more justice, and it truly pains me. Change the vocalist or just teach him a better technique and this becomes a solid 5.
man... i just don't get new wave/ 80s synth. Love Vigilantes is a banger, but only because i know the iron and wine cover. It just sounds like a tin-can speaker on every song... but not in a fun way
If the knight rider and airwolf soundtrack's grandma. I rue the day synths were invented
I enjoy New Orders top hits but did not enjoy this album.
temas para ir caminando por londres
I finished listening to it 30 seconds ago and I already forget the entire album
the vocals were tough to get through and the music was okkkk a lot of 80's bland electronica/dance synth music. It's just really average
disappointing. 1 great track, the rest is pretty middle-of-the-road 80's stuff
Just kinda sounds like New Order. Not as good as where they’d been, or where they were going.
The lyrics don't match the music, matey(sorry, I'm in a St. Patrick's Day mood). Ahoy, I was expecting some more thrashing, and all I got was some old school workout music. Favorite Track: "Elegia".
More new wave poppy 80's crap. Yawn.
Like others have stated, the vocals ruined it!
Really not much to say. In one ear, out the other. Reviews were right, vocals kinda stink.
Throughout this album I was thinking about what it was that I didn't like about it. Not to try and find faults in it but to figure out why I couldn't get in to it more. It seems like I would like it but I just can't. Maybe its the hectic rhythms that show up sometimes, maybe its something missing with the singers voice, maybe its just not for me.
Fair fare for the era. Withered as it went though. Not a fan of the 80 soundtrack audition and the vocals on the last track were embarrassing.
Not a big fan. I feel like I can try and understand what was trying to be done in this album but it just wasn’t received well. The vocals were lackluster and the music never really pulled me in. The lyrics were spotty and forgettable. Meh
New Order is pretty typical 80s sound, almost emblematically so.
This mostly felt like generic 80s synth pop on autopilot. The production is glossy, the drum machines are stiff, and the keyboards dominate everything to the point where it starts to feel sterile. There’s barely any grit or urgency. A lot of the tracks blur together, and by the midpoint it feels like you’ve already heard everything the album has to offer. It’s not bold, it’s not risky, it just kind of exists. For a band that gets as much praise as New Order does, this was pretty underwhelming. The only redeeming moments were the last two songs, which finally showed some life and atmosphere. If the rest of the album had that energy, it might’ve been a different story.
Disappointed
Of all the new order albums to choose to include.
The thing is, it might be good, but Bernard Sumner can't sing for shit so it's unlistenable. I mean, Ian Curtis couldn't either, but still. Just get a fucking proper singer!!
Nah, no Blue Monday, not interested. 2.2/5
langweilig
Solid 2.5 Stars. Nothing amazing but not bad.
A dull band I have never got the fuss over.
Holy shit this guy can't sing at all.
Found this to be rather repetitive – and what I’m hearing isn’t always that overly interesting even without being repeated. I’m really unsure about the singing here, sounds strained a lot and just not pleasing. Some of the sounds aren’t bad but not my cup of tea. There are better songs for me such as Sunrise – feels there’s a lot more energy here and some cool lead guitar which adds a nice touch to the sound. The drums are going off doing their own thing whilst maintaining that driving beat throughout. It’s really difficult to move past the vocals for most of this record – it sounds so off key and the actual singing is just not good. It’s just annoying mostly especially the last track. This has its odd moments but overall just not my thing. 2/5.
this album takes a little bit of something from everyone who was around on the ‘80s—Clash, Cure, Erasure, you name it—and somehow manages to makes it sound so generic, it hurts
Depesche Mode auf Wisch bestellt
I can’t fully explain why this didn’t work to me when other albums from new order and other stuff from this genre/time period do. It all strayed a bit too far into that weird artificial midi sound space.
Half of the album was solid new wave and the other half was overproduced with cheap 80's synths layered throughout.
The voice is not the best and the lyrics didn't really convince me. The production and instrumental was nice though
alright, underwhelming
I lowk dont like it
Didn't know anything about New Order, still probably don't tbh, didn't have any standouts for me sadly! Listened to the whole thing though, wasn't unpleasant lol
Elegia was cool but the album was pretty average otherwise
Idk if I've gotten too many indie/rock white guy bands in a row on this website lately, but I'm getting a little tired of this sound lol. This album is...fine? Easy enough to listen to. My favorite track is the instrumental Elegia. Still, and idk, maybe I'm being too harsh because I'm craving a little more variety, but I'm a little unclear on why this album made the list. 1.5/5.
repetitive but inoffensive
The song with no vocals was the best.
Liked Songs: - Love Vigilantes - Sunrise - Elegia
The music is so good, really made me wanna forget everything and just dance and dance and dance The vocals are questionable though Probably won’t listen again (sober)
I wasn't expecting to like this, and I didn't. I can say there were a few tracks where I saw an upside, and I can totally see why this record would be on this list. I'm glad I heard the whole thing through, just to be absolutely sure I'm not missing out. I'm not a fan of the excessive use of synthesizers, or the vocals... I gave it a second listen at the end of the day. I think it got worse. 1.7/5
not a fan tbh no lyrics bit disappointed but we move on yknow
I hate this singer so much, but the background tracks are pretty funky, I actually really loved Elegia and thats really only because he doesnt sing in this one. Solid 2 just for Elegia being vibey.
My high school girlfriend was a fan of New Order and this genre in general. Liked it way more than vs now.
I don’t mind the album. I recognize the opening track other songs sound familiar
Started ok but I kinda tapped out around the half-way mark.
Nice instrumental at times but vocalist annoys me
Bland, boring, and mildly unpleasant, this album is a great example of mediocrity.
not my favorite of theirs. still good tho
fun back-and-forth at the beginning of track 2. not a major fan of the vocals in general (off key?). the haunted simplicity of Elegia caught my attention every time.
86/1001 First listen. I’ve heard two songs by New order before. They did not prepare me for this. The music was fine but my god that singing is awful. I got second hand embarrassment listening to what sounds like should have been a private moment. Good on ya if you suck at something and do it anyway and then succeed! People calling this a masterpiece. Ick. 3/10
I was so excited to get this one because I had heard a lot about this band and was really happy to get into them. After listening I didn’t love it. I think I prefer Joy Division but I suppose we shall see
Did not enjoy the singer. Apathetic and strangely out of tune.
need to relisten. lowkey the best song is the instrumental one
Not really my style but it’s ok
pretty generic British pop. nothing really to write home about here. Some of the songs are composed well, but the lackadaisical lyrics bring it down.
Boring British sad boy music. The echoey guitars were dope but that’s about it
Really mediocre British 80's pop rock. Sooner Than You Think stands out amongst the rest for having some pretty delicious synth and a nice guitar solo. It's a shame that the greatest appeal of this band is supposedly the vocalist's poor singing.
Never heard this album before, never been a fan of the band. I'm giving it a go but not holding out a lot of hope to be honest. Update - listened to the whole album, quite listenable, but not really for me.
Pretty different to the other stuff I’ve heard from New Order, not for me tbh. I quite liked the first song though. Fav song is ‘Love Vigilantes’.
This is a genre and time period of music I'm not at all familiar with. It sounds very low-budget and computerized to me. Didn't care for the lead singers voice or the lyrics, and overall just didn't love this album.
I loved “Elegia”; the rest, not so much.
The instrumentals were cool, but didn’t love the singing.
Too much synth for me
It's no Technique...
very cool and experimental but not really my vibe. i liked the frog noises in the perfect kiss
Low-life is a bit harsh. Low-enjoyment seems a good alternative title.
Classic but felt a bit dated (obviously)
Some great tracks, didn't like the vocals.
This was too depressing for me all. All this downtrodden 80s music is not my thing.
Not the biggest new wave guy. Certainly not a post punk fan given what’s been on this list so far, but this was good enough. Felt like music for sad 80’s loner kids. 2.5⭐️
I just coundt stand for the whole album. I like post-punk in general, but new order never caught me.
There's a couple of interesting tracks on this but I didn't vibe with it at all. It's probably a worthwhile listen but I didn't feel like it pushed any boundaries either.
Monotonous and trivial.
it's a very pretty album but that's really all the compliments i can give. instantly forgettable and i didn't like the vocals at all
Again it’s ok some of the first songs are ok to listen to the others not too much of maybe it’s just I can’t listen to this type of music in the morning 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
This genre doesn't do it for me.
My belief is starting to solidify that new wave is an uninteresting genre.
I remember this being better than it was. Peter Hook's bass leads are awesome. Liked Songs Added: Love Vigilantes Perfect Kiss
It’s Duran Duran but some years late, and with less quality.
This one didn't give me any emotion
this is the 80s in any cliché depiction. picture yuppies in oversized waistcoats shaking their arms from side to side under a disco ball and colorful lights to synth beats.
It was just ok. Nothing really stood out after the first song. The music feels disconnected to lyrics and vocals... Highlights: Love Vigilantes
Dude straight up cannot sing. Sucks coz the instrumentals are really good! Fav songs: Elegia, Sub-Culture
4/10
most mid punk I've ever heard
idk his voice is kind of whiny. the beats are a vibe though. i liked it by the end and head was swaying
Eh, kinda catchy at times but pretty tepid overall, particularly the vocally-unhinged closing track. Probably won't return to this one.
I'm really struggling to give a crap about yet another British 80s new wave album. There's one or two interesting moments on this but it's mostly interchangeable with all of the other new wave albums on this list. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
Not an instant classic like power corruption lies, less electronic sound, more stone roses esque indie pop vibe - baggy precursor.
Brit pop with crap vocals. Really basic and annoying.
Day 2: Low-Life - New Order Love Vigilantes: (6/10) The Perfect Kiss: (4/10) This Time of Night : (7/10) Sunrise: (7.5/10) Elegie: (3/10) Sooner Than You Think: (6.5/10) Sub-culture: (3/10) Face Up: (0/10) Average: (4.6/10) 2 Stars
I do quite enjoy 80s New Wave, and this wasn't an exception. I do think the vocals get in the way of good music occasionally, and I think Sunrise was a straight rip-off of The Cure. The second half of the album actually was worse with the vocals/lyrics and brought this album down from ⭐⭐⭐.5 to ⭐⭐.5. Bummer ⭐⭐.5
Hat mich leider nicht gecatched
Odotin enemmän?
picks: Love vigilantes, the perfect kiss
I was expecting to like this one, but I must be thinking of Substance. The lead singer is off pitch a lot and his voice just isn't very good here.
2.5 Stars Love Vigilantes is an incredible song, love it so much. I'm also really familiar with the Iron & Wine version so that helps (originally thought it was written by Iron & Wine)... There were a few other cool moments on the record. But mostly I was thinking that this album is definitely not what I think of when I think "New Order". Idk if my conception of what New Order is is just skewed and not really accurate or what, but I feel like Substance and PC&L have more of the big New Order songs. Maybe I just don't know this band as well as I thought I did lol.
I’m not sure man this shit was quite boring to me. Slight moments but for the most part it was lost on me!
Found this record incredibly boring. The only track I liked was the instrumental. I just have hard time with this era of post-punk dance music, it doesn’t resonate with me.
This was fine
I didn't like this as much as I expected, but I can really hear how they influenced later artists, which is pretty cool
Cold, elegant, influential—and occasionally feels like the band is actively trying not to sound too interested in their own songs. Iconic vibes, emotionally on airplane mode.
I like new order ... this was ok. 2.5/5
Quintessential 80s that combines synth/electronics/rock/pop with echoing and vast vocals that don’t hit. While mostly enjoyable, it doesn’t have a lasting effect on me and made me want to listen to The Cure instead. There were some moments throughout where the music was captivating enough and allowed you to lock in, but probably not enough where I’d warrant listening to this entire album again.
His voice is very pitchy. The beat was good, but overall the songs were hard to listen to.
2.5 - straight down the middle
Vocals were mid. Mediocre 80s album. 2* Highlights: elegia
Honestly could not wait for this one to be over. Lyrics are uninspired, dull and oftentimes jarring compared to the acoustics. The only saving piece of this album is that the beat is surprisingly good for an otherwise bad album. Would not listen again, kept praying that the next song would start and that it would be better.
turned it off after 3 songs
Wasn't aware they did other songs than Blue Monday? Ok, so this just sounds to be like replacement level 80s britpop electronica, which, not really my bag, generally. It's a 2 for me, maybe a 2.5 if that was possible. Musically it's kind of fun but it's just not for me. Call it one of the 600 albums I should hear once before I die, if that at all. We have Depeche Mode at home ass album. A cure, not The Cure. A contented subsection more than a Joy Division. The whole thing is Erasure erasure, tbh.
--Love Vigilantes...the jangly guitars are doing interesting things --The Perfect Kiss...not really feeling the vocals. the synths (?) are interesting --This Time of Night...generic 80s ballad #327 --Sunrise...I like the energy. too long but it rocks --Elegia...instrumental. it's interesting --Sooner Than You Think...decent dance groove. the vocals are meh --Sub-Culture...another decent dancer. it's all starting to bleed together now --Face Up...vocals once again get in the way of what would otherwise be a decent groove
Two stars.. Not engaging at all
A very 80s sounding album. Not a bad thing, but nothing stood out to me
4/10
I like synth, but this is a lot of synth. Best track was Elegia by far. Balanced the synth levels well with an emotive set of other instrumentation. And also, has anyone noticed that Sumner is just a terrible vocalist?
Never quite gets going. Love Vigilantes is an all-timer though.
English, instrumental, average. We have a New Order of boaring. Jk. But this was pretty average for me. Good but nothing special. 5 out of 10
The 1980s is known for its mediocre bands that produced one or two good singles. Here we have a mediocre band without the hit single. Not a bad band, but certainly nothing you have to listen to before you die.
Mig langaði að líka við þessa plötu en ég get það einfaldlega ekki. Samt tvær.
I liked the first song unfortunately it was all downhill from there. Two stars.
Maybe there are less memorable synth-pop groups and albums from the mid-80s, but how would I know really, since I would have forgotten them as completely as I forgot this group. Keep in mind that THIS completely forgettable album has somehow been included on the list of 1001 albums we MUST hear (for some reason), but NO Warren Zevon albums. If you don't know Warren Zevon, then pick ANY one of his albums and listen to it back-to-back with this one. I guarantee Zevon will be the more memorable (and enjoyable) experience.
Nah
There were a lot of synth-pop bands in the 1980s. New Order was different than the others in a variety of ways: they lacked the dark Gothic edge of Depeche Mode; they didn’t have the baroque orchestrations OMD; they didn’t quite have the full techno dance sounds of Pet Shop Boys or the social consciousness of Erasure. In truth, they were kind of like the vanilla ice cream of synth pop. There are good songs on this album, such as Sunrise, which I really got into and Love Vigilantes is also a pretty good, though it does sound like the Cure Lite. The album really felt like it found its rock/pop sound in the center, and then faded back into mockjay status. It’s solid album (listened to it twice back-to-back) but New Order didn’t offer anything the other bands didn’t do bigger.
Nada de mais.
Not great. Depeche Mode was releasing similar music at this time with stronger vocals and better keyboard based music. New Order has never really been for me. 2/5
I love Joy Division, but I don't get why people rate New Order. This is tinny, clattering mess for the most part, with terrible vocals. The occasional bit that rises to average just sounds like something the Cure did better. Did people just really really want to like this? Am I missing some context that would make sense of it? A solid 2.
Moody, but dance-y! Melody focused guitar writing. Sounds like either drum machines that sound like kits, or kits inspired by drum machines, or both! Ambient, even prog at times. Good stuff!
Too generic nothing special
The opening track was pretty good, but I guess there's a reason they placed it first on the album as it went downhill right after that. It's not my preferred style of music, not even close. I was able to make it all the way through though. I think 2 stars is about right.
I liked moments of this but the singer is so bad that it generally ruined those moments.
While it has moments suggesting their breakout massive hits like Blue Monday, mostly seemed like forgettable 80s synth.
Weak
Love Vigilantes was a nice song. The instrumental Elegia was kind of cool...like Tubular Bells. The rest was kind of bollocks.
Never knew that new vigilantes was an older song. One good song on album
OK. 2/5
Synth pop distilled. One great song. The rest just not leaving much of an impression for me.
Sad bastard music.
seems to like extending songs by repeating refrain until it becomes boring
The vocals just kill it
80er Synthie-Pop
Rokkia, syntikkaa.
Oh good it's Adult contemporary 80's album number 27. It's very boring. Like why is it on the list boring. I'm having a difficult time making it through a song much less the album. A lot of albums have one song that carries it, I don't know what song that is here. It's just that boring.
Another 80's British band that I can't seem to get interested in. I just get bored listening to them. 2 stars or D+.
I have always liked Elegia but the rest of the album is disappointingly just run of the mill new wave
One or two OK tracks but the rest? I'll give a miss to.
Very 80s sound, takes me back .. but Joy Division they aren’t, and that makes them just another 80s band.
I expected to like this more based on other New Order I’ve heard
I somehow managed to listen to this entire album without thinking about it a single time
New wave really isn't my thing I guess.
I love almost all of the New Order I'd listened to prior to this album. So I was surprised when this barely moved the needle for me. The songs didn't stand out and the production/sound of the album isn't very appealing. I still think they're a good band and the effort is there, so I'll throw a makeup star in there.
Boring 80’s
Oline, necum vole
Meh
The '80's called and want their moody Brit pop new wave music back. It's not bad, but there's better examples of the same thing out there that I like more. Some of the songs have riffs that sound like straight up copies of other more popular songs. Face Up, I'm looking at you.
I watch a lot of 120 Minutes on MTV Classic and one of its weaknesses is they do not seem to have a very large catalog of videos available - I'm sure it has something to do with contracts/rights/whatever - so you end up seeing a lot of the same videos over and over. And they are VERY New Order-heavy, in my opinion. Which would be great if I were a New Order fan. (Or even a Joy Division fan.) Alas... According to Wikipedia, the "hit" off this album was "The Perfect Kiss" which doesn't sound even remotely familiar to me, and I think I would remember the frog sounds. I don't hate ALL dance music, but there is not very much of it I really like. And I don't hate this. But I don't like it.
Some cool ones but not wonderful
I acc didn't hate it, but still new order is not my favorite. There were some strong songs however
Similar to joy division but it didn't bring me joy.
-NO MORE 80S POP PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. -I LIKE THE ENDING OF "SUNRISE" THO. -IF BILLY IDOL & FLOCK OF SEAGULLS HAD A BABY, THIS IS THE ALBUM THEY WOULD MAKE. -EVERY SONG REMINDS ME OF BLUE MONDAY AND THAT SCENE IN HOT ROD WHEN THEY ARE DANCING OUTSIDE OF THE VAN.
so lala, nix was mich vom Hocker reisst
Heard it before. Might be a controversial opinion but I don't think this album is That good. Elegia on the other hand is a true masterpiece and makes me cry so I cannot be completely negative here 2/5
I've heard this os often, I've grown tired
I love Joy Division I like New Order And yet I found myself strangely nonplussed by this
"Love Vigilantes" is great, everything else is meh at best. Never cared much for New Order, too techno-y, too disco, too new wave.
Meh 2.5
Synth pop with some punk mixed in. Onion jam-like recipe. Makes sense it exists, some even like it. Not me
idk what to think
I liked the more Post Punk aspects of this. The dance/electronica didn’t do much. Still I made it through the record so it wasn’t horrible.
Not quite Kid Rock levels but darn near close. Your low budget bargain basement Cure wannabe.
1 half decent song in a slop of 80’s noise won’t get you far in my books
Pretty standard 80's synthpop / rock. This has some alright moments in the middle (sunrise/elegia) but overall the vocals and lyricism leave a lot to be desired so this falls into the 'forgettable' category. The last two songs almost made me want to drop my rating to one star but I guess the first half is decent enough.
Only Elegia was really cool and maybe its really because I don't like the vocals on this band?
Gear: ZMF Bokeh Artwork: 📸🔳🙁 Production: 😐🙂👌 Music: 🥁🎹📉🎤🧼 Rating: 🎢(🎢)/5
FAVO: Perfect Kiss, Elegia
Sorry, I've never been able to listen to New Order without wishing Ian Curtis was singing instead of Bernard Sumner. I recognize that's impossible, but the heart wants what it wants. Sumner has always sounded to me like a poor man's Robert Smith, lacking the qualities that make Smith's voice worth hearing over and over. Add to that the fact that synthpop rarely does anything for me, and you've got an album I can't really get behind. I guess the first song was okay aside from the vocals, and the lack of vocals on "Elegia" made it easier to sit through, but the rest of it failed to win me over.
I honestly forgot I was listening to this while I was listening to it. Not awful but completely forgettable. 2.5/5
Not my jam. Love Vigilantes is the standout and that’s just a marginal 80’s pop song. I admit I’m not a synth fan but it did hit me with some 80’s nostalgia. I wish we could do 1/2 stars because then I’d give this 21/2.
I like some New Order stuff, but I didn’t dig this album. The cover is rubbish. Looks like a Gabrielle cover. What’s the relevance of it being Stephen Morris on the front? The music was ok at times. The songwriting is pretty poor, I found this most evident on Sub-culture and Face Up. Extremely primitive and not in a way that might be construed as charming, just lacking depth or character. Bernard Sumner is a bit of a tit. He always sounds out of tune or pitchy. This album, to me, sounded like a tone deaf teenager singing Cure songs.
It was okay. Not really my type of music. Very '80s feel.
Boring
bleh
Interesting lyrics (the parts where I focused on listening) but the overall sound is not to my taste 2/3, probably 2
Meh. Kinda lame and not overly catchy.
Competent, but doesn't do anything for me. 2 stars.
Eh, just can't get into the mood to enjoy it.
How many more Duran Duran knockoffs do we need?
I grew up in the 80s and this is exactly the stuff I hated. I don’t mind it nearly as much anymore, relative to the pop stuff out now, but I still don’t like it.
Boring.
Vocals sounded like nails on a chalkboard to me
Love love vigilantes but the iron and wine cover is more my taste
Anotger generic post punk/dance album from 80s. Absolutely unlistenable, I made it three songs in, just on pure hatred. I guess the record is not so bad in broader terms, but definitely I didn't enjoy even a second. Generous two, because it's Friday, I guess.
Naja, nicht richtig reingekommen
Nothing special.
Good grief, why does it sound like he's in pain when he sings. Elegia, on the other hand, slaps HARD as a backdrop to a Metroid game. Their true calling, it seems, was to make music for Nintendo games.
chin
It’s not the vibe.
It was okay, but never understood the hype about this band. okay, but not for me.
Poor
I just really struggle to get on with New Wave. We discovered keyboards and drum machines and for some reason decided to replace everything that was good about rock music with these thin, synthetic, monotonous tunes. For all their plaudits, this New Order LP delivers them in spades. I understand and respect the impact this had on dance music and some of the sub genres that emerged in the later 80s-00s, but twice through was more than enough for me. I just didn’t enjoy it.
it's just not my thing. was background music. all sounds same & don't care for vocals
It was background music
Listened to this twenty minutes ago, and I can't remember a thing about it.
I initially thought the vocals weren't the greatest but I had heard worse. Elegia was quite enjoyable. Then the final track played and I couldn't believe how far the quality of everything just dropped. What a horrible way to end an album
not my favourite new order album
Those vocals are not good at all. The instrumental is not bad but not incredible either. Didn't like it that much.
Is the '80s a huge try-not-to-use-synths-challenge- impossible era in pop music??
Yet another melancholic post-punk album with whiny British boys. This one was more up beat than the others so I'll give it half a star for that. Just boring and formulaic justi like the others of this genre. 2.5.
That's not my taste in musik. Boring.
Yuck.
It's ok, some of it sounds a little jarring. High 2.
I'll say this: I've disliked other 80's music more. 2.2
I did enjoy this album. This time of night and sunrise the most but the end destroyed it a bit for me. These Vocal performances was not good in some songs or moments... Still glad to have it heard at least once
Didn’t hold my attention at all.
Not what I expected at all! To me this album has very much a pet shop boys vibe, whereas I thought New order were much gritter. That said it still wasn't to my taste. Can only award it a 2 I'm afraid.
Favorite Track: The Perfect Kiss
Definitely heard of these guys. I know one song, Blue Monday. Don't know much else. So interested to hear this. Too 80's poppy for me. 3 tracks in not sure if I really dig this too much
This didn’t do much for me.
Not a fan of synthesized music but I see the seeds of today’s techno in this album.
The music is cool but the singing is so bad it's hilarious
As a Joy Division fan, I want to like New Order, but just can't. Too much New-Wave Electro-Pop nonsense. There are a few songs I kinda liked though, which has Cure-esque vibes.
It's not great honestly.
And that's a no from me
It sounded like the singer was unsure about whether or not to bother - very weak voice on these tracks. I like the instrumentation on some of these songs, in a fade-into-the-background kind of way. I will never seek out this album again.
Did not do it for me.
A couple songs were pretty good, but mostly this was just okay. Not really anything special
This one had a few good spots, but New Order will never sound as good to me as Joy Division. It's not even New Order's best album.
Why is every song so long
I understand the influence of new order on music and the many bands that count them as an influence but I am not a fan.
Did not dislike as much as I thought I would, but it's very close to one star.
Not bad. Reminds be of a combination of early Cure and INXS.
What the hell is this? Is it new wave, synth rock, or even just straight-up dance? Or is it post-punk, maybe even dance-punk? Are New Order savants, or can they not play in sync, either with themselves or a metronome? I can’t tell if this is avant-garde pop genius, or a sloppy mess of punks going pop, and it just so happens that they’re early enough to the party that not having a handle on how to play with new technology earns them respect instead of ridicule. But then they take a perfect song like “The Perfect Kiss,” which, despite their sloppy playing, is still a well-written song, and add in stock sound footage of frogs and other bullshit. Or they meander with songs like “Sunrise” or “Elegia” and just rip off their post-punk contemporaries [including their former selves] with less finesse. The closest they get to winning me over is “Sooner Than You Think,” but there’s just soooo many overdubbed guitars that don’t gel together well, it just pulls me out. And then there’s songs like “Face Up” that feel completely out of place on this record, way too uptempo and new wave oriented to even sound like the same band. I think if it was even slightly tighter, I’d be okay with it, though not fully in love. Yet if it was any looser, I’d be a lot more upset that I had to listen to this. The fact that it’s only 8 songs makes me feel a lot more apologetic, honestly. As it stands, it’s just too messy and undefined to convince me of its supposed unique genius. Maybe next time New Order will stick to a singular vision and actually care about playing well together.
A chips of decent songs surrounded by boring '80s electronica.
Never been a big New Order fan. That was pretty tough getting through. There are worse though, so going with 2 stars.
Only enjoyable song was the instrumental. Perhaps if the vocal tracks were from the entire album, then it might be decent.
This was pretty bad. Had a lot of synths and was generally boring.
This album is very much top heavy, as, by the time you get to the last song, the writing begins to get more monotonous and the vocal presence becomes fairly uninteresting
Normally I like New Order - and maybe it was the wrong day for it- but I found it absolutely boring.
Dated sounded 80s music just doesn’t do anything for me.
Not their best work as they veer more towards the synthesizer sounds of the mid to late 80s, only "The Perfect Kiss" stands out...
Very Cure-ish. An enjoyable experience. Both surprised that we didn’t know this band better back in the 80s. No real standout songs and didn’t recognize any of them. (2.2*s)
Well done, but boring, repetitive. Not something I would turn off, but also something I would not endeavor to listen to again.
Some standard 80s synth pop. Need to listen to their earlier punk rock stuff to understand the significance of this album shift. Dig the keyboard frogs 🐸.
some songs sounded kind of like depeche mode. other songs sounded like the cure. the music was similar to these bands without coming across as mere imitation. but this is just referring to the music. the vocals… well, the vocalist just doesn’t have a very strong voice and seems to be out of tune a lot. one standout track to me was “elegia”, which sounded like it would belong in an 80’s era horror movie soundtrack. other than that, the rest of the album was pretty unremarkable to me.
I'm bored
Excellent musical composition, horrible vocals.
Not for me. Pass.
It is okay. Like listening to a Pet Shop Boys and the Cure mashup... just not as good.
2/5 Pretty crunchy guitar and catchy raw synth, but JFC the vocals are so poorly recorded, and some of the solos are just drowned out by the generally really bad mixing and recording quality, catchy but generally pastiche/uninspiring for a mid 80's New Wave/Electronic album.
i found the production at times dated, reflective of its mid-80s origin. despite this, the album is actually okay ! personally, i think this album is one of those albums where you cherrypick songs and listen to those but you don’t listen to the full album more than once, and for that, it’s getting a 4/10 from me. rest of the review on ig @musicwithnessa
meh
I’ve been familiar with New Order since the 80’s. I always thought of them as pretty much just techno-dance music that happens to have lyrics which, admittedly, I never paid attention to. My opinion on that hasn’t changed from listening to Low-Life in its entirety.
Not for me. Vocals are very big to me and that is not a strength of this band.
Meh
Why is this like the 3rd New Order album I've been subjected to. Only the lead track I kinda like mostly from familiarity with it being played on WXRT here in Chicago over the years.
Not for me.
Interesting instrumentation but overbearing vocals make this not want to come back to this album at all.
Nothing too catchy here. It's not a bad album but not something I would intentionally play.
If you are into Joy Division, then I'm sure you'd be into New Order. I am not into Joy Division.
