Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I'm frequently surprised how many bands had such similar sound in the 60's and 70's, but I guess that's true of any era? Good music here. If you like the Stones, especially their R&B and C&W classics, the Flamin' Groovies are for you.
Never heard of ‘em. Kinda fun.
Started really strong. Lost it's way halfway through. I'm sure they were a great band to see live with a few pints. But was there any need for 6 minute cover versions of Shakin All Over and Louie Louie
Eh
Decent 70's rock and boogie. Stones-ish. I couldn't quite get into the guy's voice. The covers on this album, though, are the highlights. They play the hell out of other people's stuff! Unexpected Bangers: Doctor Boogie, Yesterday's Numbers
Surprisingly straight ahead rock and roll record. No gimmicks but not memorable either. It’s fine.
Mezcla de Rolling con Beatles, con punk, con 50s. Louie Louie.
Have you seen my baby has a beatles vibe to it. I like it. The rest of the album had a good 70s rock vibe. 3.5 stars for me
The name "Flamin' Groovies" sounds like a band I would love. The album art immediately makes me think this is going to be some low budget punk or garage rock. Kinda folky though. Nothing spectacular about this one, but nothing bad either.
Pretty standard sounding rock album from the 70s. Nothing special, nothing bad. Whisky Woman was a pretty cool song
This is just some normal blues rock nothing spectacular. Not great not bad just aight.
It was pretty good. I was like power punk pop-y
This feels like something Tarantino was listening to while his friends paid attention to more mainstream rock music of the same era. But it was this band which ended up on his movie soundtrack in order to showcase something more punk or obscure. Great first half with the second half dipping a little. The bonus covers are done very well. Pretty solid.
Not bad at all - better than I thought
Pretty good rock & roll
Never heard of this one. I thought of Foghat, and other 70s rock/blues/southern sounds during the first few songs, but it seems this band leans power pop. Happy to have heard them, not likely to seek them out again.
Groovy indeed. Not sure I absolutely *had* to hear it though.
Adequate blues-rock, not enough to get me excited.
3.5 It has moments…
not bad, not really for me
Slightly above a 3 but just below a 4
Rock, 1971 -> 3
Never heard this but it was pretty good.
Okee Dokee... So yesterday I listened to The Rolling Stones. Today I listened to this. Unfortunate timing? Not my favoriite genre? IDK. For some reason I felt like it is all "OK," but couldn't wrap my head around why it would be one of the 1001 album must hears? This project has been wonderful, eye opening, interesting, and even these questionable choices give a certain pleasure in the discovery. With this album... it isn't good or bad, it just... like "is." For example, it is like as if we were on a road trip and stopped at some restaurant/ club and they were playing in the background and someone would say, "hey, these guys are pretty good. How is your cheesburger?"
Pretty cool actually
I was expecting a new Rolling Stones (based on the Wikipedia page), and I got a not-so-good RS cover.
Stones-lite with inflections of the early Beatles, not bad. Standouts are Have You Seen My Baby? And Whiskey Woman.
Very straight ahead rock 'n roll stuff, but I enjoyed its energy and raw vibe. No real standout tracks, but it was enjoyable, if a bit forgettable.
Fun but a bit derivative and has that 70s creepiness going. It’s got hints of T-Rex, Stones, Elvis and Skynyrd - and rarely does it have a voice of its own. Doesn’t make it not fun but it is easily forgettable.
best songs:whisky woman
I was expecting something a little harder based on the album cover.
Some songs were good. Some were not. The songs I did like I would love if they played it in a movie or in the background.
B- High Flyin' Baby 3 City Lights 3 Have You Seen My Baby? 3 Yesterday's Numbers 3 Teenage Head 3 32-20 3 Evil Hearted Ada 3 Doctor Boogie 3 Whisky Woman 3 This was nice. Nothing special.
Enjoyed the bluesy rock sound!
Fun rock album. Several fine tracks - Evil Hearted Ada was a pretty perfect callback to Elvis.
Pretty familiar-sounding 70s pop/rock with a strong bluesy feel. I was happy to listen the first time but didn’t really feel like a second one when I tried. Listens: 1 Fave track: ? (Didn’t have time to pick one) Rating: 3
Good old blues rock. Just lacks a face.
Когда на альбоме больше проявляются блюзовые моменты то слушать его становится интересно но вот когда большая часть занята рок н роллом причем не самым крутым то звучит конечно малость удручающее. Пластинка не разочаровала а скорее просто не впечатлила
another rock and roll set with not too much to say. songs are alright all around and it's got a rough ol' sound to it for the most part, but it's another case of either the genre isn't for me or it's the same set of chords again and again. there's some talented songwriters here though.
Good old rock music. Good quality
This might be what I throw on next time I play cards with my father-in-law 👍
Pretty good. Similar sound to The Rolling Stones. Very energetic album, but ultimately not for me.
3.5
Groovie
So many things happening here. Provocative band name, provocative album title. 10/10 fashion on the cover. Guy on the right with the cigarette looks like Keenan in the contact photo that Grant sent. Fun music even though it sounds like it was recorded through a twice-baked potato.
This reminded me of early Lennon/McCarthy and Rolling Stones rejects. They sound like about five different bands depending on the song but I enjoyed it
No thank you
Pretty good- reminds me of a lot of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd (which came later I think?) Not sure why they didn't get the credit but they are good to listen to.
Blues-Rock mit Rockabilly-Einschlag.
Like a missing link between the Rolling Stones and Dr Feelgood.
Good.
Old rock n roll
Teenage Head is the third album by the San Francisco rock band Flamin' Groovies. It's a garage rock album from the 70's featuring a classic blues rock flashback. Critically acclaimed, but the album didn't seem to chart or win any awards or certifications. It's a great album as a result of the band's "modern" (early 70's) take on the blues and classic rock 'n roll combination that made the entire evolution of rock music begin back in the 50's. Fans of classic rock will enjoy this album.
When it's sloppy and raw it's great. When it's overproduced it isn't. It's not the greatest album ever, but I enjoyed it enough to zip through it.
Turns out I disagree with Mick Jagger. Talented bunch, though. 3/5
I still don’t believe this is not a Stones album. It was pretty good though.
Fun album, not the most unique thing in the world. I certainly understand the Stones comparison. Very competent, but none of the writing or playing stand out from similar albums of the time in my opinion.
I appreciate the bluesy, Rolling Stones inspired sound, and I'd actively buy this if I found a used copy at a reasonable price, but in the grand scheme of things it gets lost within the rest of this genre's sound.
Rock and roll from the early 1970s.
The definition of whelming. Basic blues combined with basic rock. Rolling Stones did the same thing way better at the same time
I like some of the blues rock on this. It's fun, and when it's shaggier I like it best. Teenage Head, 32-20, Evil Hearted Ada were good in addition to the "hits"
I had no idea who the Flamin' Groovies were. Very early Rolling Stones sound, surf rock, cover band vibes. I assume they got lost in the early 70's 'rock' genre and overshadowed by other bands.
It definitely has an old Stones feel. I liked it.
Good album
This was fine, kind of forgettable, but fun in the moment!
once again, this sounds dope as hell, but a bunch of white guys from San Francisco can’t get a high rating for blues-rock. it absolutely slaps but i have to knock it down some stars on principle.
I'd be curious to read the write-up in "1001" on what makes this a must hear. I dig a good blues rock sound, and they've got that, but I don't find the songs all that interesting. Not a bad record per se, but not particularly a standout either.
Liked the album. Can definitely hear the similarities between this and some of the great Stones albums in that time. Overall pretty good, just missing a few standard tracks. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Kind of like rolling stones, but not as good
Liked Whiskey Woman. Otherwise the album sounds similar to southern rock and then sounds like early punk in some parts. Has a different rock feel but came out the same time as a Stones album. Take on blues + rock. Included covers of That Will Be the Day and Louie Louie. Louie Louie cover wasn’t that good, felt like a lot of slurring and lyrics weren’t clear.
Old school Rock'n' Roll - from a band from the Bay Area in the early 70s, no less. No psychedelic shenanigans. Who would have thought .... 3/5
A good 20 mins too long and mostly covers. Reasonably well done but I was between a 2 and a 3.
Upbeat, bluesy rock...nice vocals. Interesting arrangements...
This is ok at best. Some of these songs sound like the lead singer's excuse to do a bad Elvis impression. Feeling a low 3 to light 2
Enjoyed, was it all covers?
Decent enough bluesy rock, nothing outstanding but great band name
Never heard of these before, good grooves! They're were totally an influence on the Eagles of Death Metal.
More garage rock. This one had some more country elements. Fun!
Helt chill och smakfullt kort
Groovy
This groop was way more rockin then I expected. Some punk like tunes and some bluesy Elvis stuff. While I enjoyed it, though, I don't think I'll revisit it that often.
Solid. Sounds like The Rolling Stones
It's fine. It's like what The Rolling Stones would sound like if they weren't absolute shit. Evil Hearted Ada sounds like a weird Elvis knock off.
Never heard of this band. Surprisingly interesting. Some viable tracks...3 stars.
Not bad! Enjoyed most the tracks
Even Mick Jagger recognized how close this was to the Stone's Sticky Fingers. It's a bit more raw and leans further into the Blues than Rock & Roll. The whole album stays very raw and never meets the mastery of the Stone's sound, instead conjuring up influences like Elvis and Surf music.
Ok
Not sure why cover albums make the 1001 list…good music and all but meh
Liked the sound, but the vocals sometimes were… rough.
nice rockin'
3.5/5. I enjoyed listening to this, but I would not call it anything special.
Some good blues rock
The sound of the band is basically like any other 70s band. Nothing special.
A necessary album to hear before I die? Maybe not. Still good humoured and carefree catchy stuff - decent fun for a Friday afternoon. Two and a half. Fave track: Evil Hearted Ava
Good ol’dirty rock but nothing more.
Never heard of these guys before, but I was really enjoying the first half of the album. Kind of lost me once you got to the covers on the back half though.
Hate the cover, like the music.
much more rock than expected.
Was groovy but got a stale near the end. Though I can see why it was important for that time.
I'm torn... This album is kind of all over the place. Not in a bad way... But it ranges from bluesy rock and roll, to old Johnny Cash era Country, to a random Elvis song called Evil Hearted Ada. This album is from 1971 and some songs fit the era, some songs are before its time for sure. It has a timeless vibe to it. The quality of the album is great. Very well recorded, engineered, and produced. Not my typical album from this time, but there are some great parts. Lot of cool guitar riffs and vocals. Great harmonies the reminisce April Wine. For a band I've never heard of, it was a great surprise.
The album starts off as an old school rock 'n' roll affair, nothing too surprising. It does take a side step into the rockabilly at times, with tracks that would hint at the sound that The Stray Cats would go on to perfect a little later. Nothing too extraordinary here for the modern listener, but enjoyable, nonetheless.
Noisy blues. Reminds me of The Sonics' debut, released 6 years before this. Compared to that, it's more modern, but definitely not better.
This is the type of album that makes listening to this list so much fun. I've heard of this band but didn't really know what they sound like. This is very good albeit far from groundbreaking. Definitely has a cool Sticky Fingers/Exile era Stones vibe mixed with a little Nuggets-style garage rock...which is great. I'll be adding a number of these songs to my playlist.
Pretty good, roots rock album
Appalling band name and album cover, but very competent blues-rock music. Apparently Mick Jagger is a fan, which I can believe. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: High Flyin' Baby Date listened: 28/09/23
Good swing, hate the voice
I've not listened to all of Rolling Stones' blues rock-style albums from this same era, but I think I prefer this over those, as this is far more consistent throughout the album, rather than just having one or two great tracks and the rest being forgettable. A lot of this album does feel generic, yes, but I never found myself especially disliking any track, and in fact, I'd say there's enough here I actually like quite a bit, varying from the strict blues sound to actually feel like it's from the early 70s, rather than just relying on nostalgic stylings. Just decent music you'd here on your local classic rock radio.
Oh hell yeah what a jammin start. Getting rockier Beatles vibes which is a lot of fun. Generally enjoyable but nothing to really write home about, some decent covers and just a fun bop.
It’s ok
Meh.
Kind of liked it. Not really my thing, but it had some songs that were relatively enjoyable. The guitar solos got a bit monotonous.
GL, B
To say this was a better blues album than sticky fingers may be slightly accurate but for it to be a better overall album is incredibly false. This was a good album and it was a bit more blues rock than the stones were once they started making bigger hits. But the stones are significantly better. This album was enjoyable and for a US band they did a good job at having a popular 60s rock sound. Overall I’d revisit it as it’s a fresher classic rock sound. 7.0/10
Maybe a better manager, maybe a better name. It's not far from the Stones, it's a little odd they didn't go further. 3.5
Now it sounds like something someone somewhere somewhat on speed might release. Have you seen my baby is a complete ripoff of the beatles. On speed. I do like yesterday's numbers. And then the next song is just shit.
The blues-rock guitar work is really awesome. Unfortunately the vocalist does more to detract than elevate the music. Whiskey Woman is really strong, but there aren't enough songs like that to push this album higher. It's interesting and enjoyable.
This was an interesting blend of rockabilly, swampy blues rock, and garage rock. It’s a bit sloppy and not particularly groundbreaking but it was enjoyable.
Good
Actually quite enjoyed this.
Another dud. Tired tracks with nothing close to anything as iconic or entertaining as their soundalike The Rolling Stones. How Mick Jagger can think this is better than Sticky Fingers is truly beyond me.
This band does blues rock better than the Stones of the same era. If their front man had Jaggers swagger they’d probably be an all time famous band. Still their 50+ year career is nothing to sneeze at.
Good
Enjoyable and good runtime, reminded me a lot of the Rolling stones mixed with the Beatles
Was definitely groovy
It's a guitar band and I like guitar bands so this is fine. If I didn't like rock music then this is nothing special. The Sonics were better.
Punkish rock n roll. Just ok.
Du rock solide. La petite touche country l’empêche d’être trop générique
literally never heard of this album or even the band. pretty fun album. but overall, a good mix of songs I will and will not listen to again (mostly the latter). solid 3/5
A little George Thorogood, Exile on Main Street, Elvis Costello, but ahead of all of them. A lot of range, but mostly in the boogie rock pocket. Probably could have cut a few tracks off this one. Wouldn't choose to listen again, but wouldn't complain if someone else put it on.
Very 60s even though it came out in the 70s. Decent but not great; a bit samey - good cover versions, but they weren't on the original album.
Very raw and bluesy. Strong, consistent sound. No one song really stands out from the crowd. Guitar sound is kind of rattle-y and thin. Singer sounds like an OK-but-slightly-drunk Mick Jagger impersonator. A solid album overall. I didn't listen to the CD tracks. Best song: Yesterday's Numbers?
It flirts way too much with White Man's blues , but of that genre, its one of the better ones.
Rockabilly con ritmo, muy típico de comienzos de los 70. Guitarrero y con estilo. Sin duda, con marcha
Probably won’t listen again
Was this good fun? I believe so! Was it a classic album that dudes and dudettes will rave about? I believe not. Some cracking tunes on it though so will definitely revisit at some point. For now though, I’ll hammer in another 3 star!
Right off the bat I thought I was listening to The Black Crowes only not terrible. I'm surprised nobody was calling them out for just blatantly stealing Teenage Head's style. I will say that Chris Robinson's voice is more "charismatic" and probably what helped carry that band. By the end of the album I was getting some real Cramps vibes but lazier somehow. The last few songs were real dull and lost me even though I love The Cramps and their sound.
This is great. Love the Stones vibe with California injections.
gets a bit shite / derivative at the end but starts great.
It’s an entertaining album, but there’s a reason that people remember Sticky Fingers and not this one.
What annoys me is it seems like they're just saying to themselves 'ok, this track let's do Velvet Underground. Now let's do Rolling Stones, now Elvis' whatever. I bet this would be a fun live band at a party though.
I enjoyed the general sound but there feels like there's something missing that propels it further for me. Like, they don't fully have an individualistic sound yet but are so, so close for me. I enjoyed City Lights a lot, reminded me of Velvet Underground in it's thematic delivery. I just wish they had a bit more identity.
Enjoyable listen of a band I don't recall recall hearing about before, but so derivative of the Stones (who had definitely arrived at the territory earlier), and I'm not convinced are adding anything new or essential.
Fun (garage rock?) that's definitely more on the blues end of the spectrum. Actually, I do know a bit about this band. Especially interesting cause they started out blues rock, changed frontmen, and then were more popular doing British invasion-y stuff. Very fun, although apparently, Jagger thought it was a "better take on blues-rock" or something than Sticky Fingers. I don't know about that. Glad I listened to it tho.
Groovy for sure
7/10
2.5/5 ok rock but boring
heard them before
Mezcla de Rolling con Beatles, con punk, con 50s. Louie Louie
Listened Before? N Pretty jammin, pretty bluesy, and pretty classic sounding. Stones-ish stuff that I thought was very easy to listen to while working. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Whiskey Woman
I liked this at the beginning and then felt like I was listening to a shitty cover band. Whisky woman was my favorite.
You look at their name, you look at the cover, and their music meets expectations.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - 32-20 (6) 2 - Whiskey Woman (9) 3 - High Flyin' Baby (1)
Couldn't quite pin this one down. Is it rock, is it Blues, is it full of covers? It all amounted to a forgettable experience.
70s rock/blues with some good covers in there. Raw but average
Dug it!
There are some hits on this album. Dk if I could listen to it all the time though
I thought this was an album by Teenage Head (in following up, I learned that band's name was inspired by this album's title). I really dug the opening track High Flyin Baby - great pace and bluesy rock sound. While I also enjoyed tracks like Have You Seen my Baby? and the title track, most of the rest of the album didn't measure up as well and/or was less able to hide their flawed vocals. Tracks like City Lights, Yesterday's Numbers, and 32-20 were too plodding for me and Evil Hearted Ava sounded like a weird combination of Elvis and Suicide. I'm undecided on the final (maybe most well-known?) track Whiskey Woman. The album has promise but comes up a bit short.
Some pretty good garage rock here. I like their overall sound, especially the use of the slide guitar. This style is normally not my thing so I wouldn’t rush out and buy their entire discography, but I can certainly see why this on the list. The last track album “Whisky Woman” was my favorite and stood out from the rest. The bonus tracks afterwards I enjoyed as well although I tend not to count bonus tracks towards my reviews. A solid 3 stars for a fun rocker that I’m glad I heard but don’t really need to listen to again.
не обманули - классический рокнрол, не для меня)
It's alright, fairly formulaic 70s rock and roll, but nice in places. Whiskey Woman maybe my standout track.
This is quite fun, a quick, tight half an hour of blues rock with a few changes of pace. As has been mentioned a few times, it's very similar to the Rolling Stones. I like it but don't love it, it's all good but there's no standout track. 3/5.
Just some classic rock doing classic rock things.
Solid album 3.45
A Rolling Stones tribute band. Pretty good, to be fair, but not very original.
the name is far better than the band. they're a bit of a rolling stones lite with a side of elvis thrown in. their most interesting tracks are the rockabilly cramps style stuff.
Very Rolling Stones-like with a bit of Grateful Dead, but strangely enough I liked this more than either of those bands (which isn't saying a lot tbh). Probably wouldn't listen again but glad I heard it once. 3 stars.
I liked this.
Fun playful rocknroll that gets a bit too repetitive with the 12 bar blues
Fun, rolling stonesque. Very straightforward, road trip album.
Went in with little to no expectations and came out pretty surprised. Would I ever listen again? Probably not. However, its good background music and reminds me of Elvis and a bit of the beatles. I cant say I love it but honestly not too bad!
Glad I listened to it and there were a couple of cool tunes on here but overall this didn't do much for me.
While this is usually compared to The Rolling Stones, I think this album manages to have a unique sound. It could definitely benefit from a remaster. My favourite song was City Lights.
Didn’t get to listen to the whole album but I enjoyed what I heard. 3*
Ohhhhh these are the Louie Louie guys! Fun mix of rock, blues, etc. Seems kind of Of The Time in terms of baseline late-60s/early-70s bands.
Good, if unmemorable blues/bluegrass rock. The instrumentals are great, the singer is utterly mediocre, and stuck back in the mix.
This was alright - kind of generic rock of the era with some influences of The Rolling Stones, just obviously not as good. 6/10.
Not bad. Very garage band-y rock and roll. I liked most of it, though it started to get more blues-centric and generic towards the end of the album.
Wasn't bad, wasn't great. I do hear the early punk aspect though. I just don't think it had much sticking power. 3/5
Solid 70s rock with some good attitude but waaaaay too long for what it is.
Wasn’t expecting much out of this, but it’s solid boomer rock, and surprisingly varied. I especially like the Elvis tribute. It’s a breezy listen at a solid half hour, but I also don’t see myself returning to it. C
Nice music, like it a bit more rough though. The extra songs, covers of rock and roll classics were very good.
Yeah these guys know how to play. I get Mick’s comment that it sounds like Sticky Fingers but the Stones were playing styles that were borrowed from others. It wasn’t original but Keef and the boys just executed it incredibly well. Flaming Groovies copied the way Keef plays. So they are guilty but The Stones can’t gripe since they weren’t being original. Some simple but good lyrics like on Doctor Boggie: #You gotta mow the lawn if you want to get along w me.” The cover versions on the bonus tracks are also interesting. The copying of other bands continues since Shaking All Over sure sounds like The Who’s version of that song on Live at Leeds but Pete can’t gripe since The Who’s version sounds like The Guess Who’s version. An interesting aside, in the mid 60s when both The Who and The Guess Who were playing at bars, the crowd would confuse the two bands since their names were similar. The crowd would yell for The Who to play Shaking all Over so they learned the song and added it to their set. Similarly, The Guess Who learned to play My Generation to satisfy requests from bar crowds that didn’t realize there were two different bands. Good fun.
Similar to another reviewer, I thought this was an album by the Canadian band Teenage Head that was called Flamin' Groovies. I wouldn't be surprised if the Canadian band got their name from this album. Overall, this is a solid, straight-ahead rock and roll album. I also immediately thought they sounded very similar and maybe even better than the Rolling Stones and with Mick Jagger his royal-self saying that he thought they did a better take on classic blues and rock and roll who am I to argue. Shaking' all over and Whiskey Woman were standouts for me.
It's like the very sleazy 70's Stones...not sure its that great or important but it would sound better after a few more listens and preferably a couple of old fashions.
Never really listened to them but I've seen this infamous cover. It's pretty enjoyable. Catchy with nice riffs and some great arrangements.
J'ai écouté cet album il y a une heure, et ai oublié d'écrire mon review dans la foulée. Vous vous doutez bien que je n'ai déjà plus la moidnre idée de ce que j'ai écouté.
Even in the notes it was stated that the rolling stones felt like this was a better version of their album and I partially agree but more so I'm laughing that this guy sounds almost identical to them so really they are just copy cats. I thought I'd get annoyed by this album but I'm enjoying it, only a few skips.
garage rock kind of group. The music was all rock n roll. they did number of covers from other groups, although different from the original but pretty good
OK wow, pretty wild and fun.
Ok, yeah, kind of a fun listen. I was thinking there was something Rolling Stonesish about the whole thing so it was interesting to read on Wikipedia "Mick Jagger reportedly noticed the similarities between the albums and thought the Flamin' Groovies did the better take on the theme of classic blues and rock 'n roll revisited in a modern context" Fave track - The title track is pretty good. Like their cover of "Louie Louie", too...
3.5/5 interesting, i'll have to relisten
This was pretty good. I was hoping I would like it more but it landed solidly in the “good but not great” zone for me. I also wasn’t a fan of the production of this album.
Some enjoyable stuff on here, but too often just seems like musical wallpaper. Nothing too complex or risky which leads to a semi-bland record. I guess if I was a big fan of rock and roll then it’d be more appealing but alas… 5/10
Never heard of this band before listening to this album. Pretty good early rock music.
Some fun rocknroll
groovy baby also another louie louie cover
Has a similar feel to the Rolling Stones with their take on blues and classic rock-'n'-roll. It's funny that this came out the same year as Sticky Fingers, too. Anyway, not a bad collection of tracks. It has the same vibes as Exile on Main St. in the sense that I appreciate it more than I outright like it. I wouldn't go back to listen to this but there are some awesome cuts that will be on my playlist.
sounded very generic, not good as background noise
Perfectly fine, if a little uninspiring. There are some good grooves here and a few that overstay their welcome. The band had something but they also lacked something, maybe that spark which would have made them pop.
Garage rock/Rolling Stones-ish blues/proto punk. Very solid, will make a return.
A more bluesy Rolling Stones
I love the energy of this. I can't stand the band name. None of the songs get under my skin, but if I went to bars, this would probably be the bar band I'd want playing.
Like a less artful Rolling Stones in places. I like the production and the overall vibe, though goodness only knows what the singer is doing on the first track - it sounds like he's gargling his own tongue.
Actually kinda a vibe.
Pretty decent.
Teenage Head winds pleasantly towards the strange as it proceeds, and I'm glad the list introduced me to the band. Perhaps I should sharpen my regard given the release date, but I'm not sure if I'll revisit this music over similar expressions.
Tough and rugged rich blues album
2/16/2022 Today's Album: "Teenage Head" by Flamin' Groovies - I reviewed this album once before while my flight was taking off from denver and it got deleted by the time I got wifi, so here is a shorter review. This album is fairly decent. It is a lot of straightforward rock beats and progressions with some Velvet Undergound (Lou Reed) type vocals. There is a lot of guitar twang that makes this album feel quite hick-y and bluegrass-y. However, that doesn't totally take away from the technical talent in the guitar work throughout this album. There are a lot of songs that feel quite memorable and that get me bobbing my head, but then there are tracks that are fairly ugly and campy. I think overall, though, they balance these two types of tracks in a way that flows well and keeps my engaged. There are some surefire highlights on this album, like the smooth and warm Whiskey Woman or the rocking cover of Louie Louie. Some of the guitar work on this album is so impressive for how under the radar this little punk project is. There is a dirtyness to the production, but it is relatively clean compared to most punk outfits of this time. It is a great album for some straightforward dude rock and punk. I don't know quite what else to say about it since many other aspects are fairly generic, but there is a lot of personality to the aspects of this album that shine and there are many moments that are very enjoyable. It seems like a great road trip album or just one to have playing in the background of a small gathering. Score: 7.5/10 Pretty Good / Classic Highlights: High Flyin' Baby, City Lights, 32-20, Whiskey Woman, Shakin' All Over, Louie Louie, Scratch My Back
Margt alveg áheyrilegt, en svo kemur smá retró rockabilly inn á milli sem dregur þetta niður. Má hafa gaman af þessu en ég nenni þessu ekki oft.
Solid rock n roll
Kinda fun early 70s rock. Wavering between a more Bluesy sound and a Rockabilly sound. Unremarkable, but not unenjoyable. I don't think I'd ever add it to a playlist, but if it ever came on the radio I would probably go "hey these guys are fun!", not really remembering their name but also not turn it off.
Pretty good rock and rollin'
The Flamin’ Groovies have a good sound which I liked. For me the album is a bit too long. Nothing extraordinary, just a fine album. Favourite songs: - High flying’ baby - Yesterday’s numbers - Carol
For the first 30 seconds I was really excited to hear a full on blues rock album but then I heard the vocals and my expectations were lowered to just another 70s rock album with blues influence. Still not bad tho fav was carol
Seemed pretty typical for the day. Nothong fancy.
It was ok
Way not what I was expecting
Bit of a strange album. Some tracks sounded 70s, some sounded 50s, more covers than I expected. Not great, just odd.
It was better than I expected based on the album art and the incredibly stupid band name. Seriously, who named this band?? It’s such an immature name and it inspires no confidence. Tunes okay though.
Pretty fun, 70s blues rock. Wouldn't necessarily listen to it again, but works fine as your classic rock driving music
Groovy - 3.5.
I had never heard of this band and when I started to listen, it was not at all appealing. I checked back a little later in the day and it wasn’t as bad as I first thought. It’s bluesy-rock, which I don’t mind, but this band’s version of the style seemed rushed with little soulfulness. It just did not grab me at all.
The earth didn't move but this is ok. I like this general style of music and there were a few stand-out moments. I like City Lights and some of its rhymes: laughin'/autographin', Stetson/gets in, and buildin'/killed him. The line in Have You See My Baby about talking to strangers because I'm a stranger, too, made me laugh. Dr. Boogie is pretty fun. Don't know that I'll play this whole album again but I like some of these songs enough to rotate them into play now and again.
Bloody country & rock'n roll...
This is an unusual album, but I liked it. I'm more a fan of the Shake Some Action iteration of the Groovies, but I’ve always admired how they did their own thing musically regardless of what was popular at the time. This one is a little ramshackle and garage rocky, with a lot of 70s attitude and just a little of a proto punk edge. Stylistically it is all over the place, to the point where it’s kind of ridiculous. They start out going for a Stones-esque bluesy rock and they end up playing rockabilly. I would ding another band endlessly for this, but somehow, they manage to pull it off. This was a lot of fun. Fave songs: Whiskey Woman, Yesterday's Numbers, City Lights, Have You Seen My Baby, Evil Hearted Ava
Some vaguely Rolling Stones sounds
Generally okay. Some songs were better, some worse. Overall not very memorable to me in any good ways
I don't know man. I really wish I was more into this sort of Classic rock n' roll thing. Like I never really cared for the Rolling stones, but I feel like I enjoyed these guys more to be honest. But yeah, This rockabilly deal is really hit or miss with me. It's not bad though, It has moments where it sounds extremely 70's, tin can style. But it's decent.
It was ok
A band far better live. This is a mixed set of songs with some fine bluesy rock in there.
rock n roll from a bad i'd never heard dof
Decent album. I knew a couple of the songs.
Fun rock n roll, chaps voice gets irritating on occasion
Rockig country
Not bad - I like the band, but the overall album was a take on a genre that I just didn't get super into. There were a few fun tracks on it though so I gave 3 stars.
Real decent groove to this album.
I can understand the appeal of the album but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it- it feels very derivative of contemporaneous musical acts at the time.
Rock clássico com muita cara de Stones.
Surprised I hadn’t heard this before, besides Louis Louis. Pretty basic. Not rushing to replay.
Title track was coolio.
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Have you seen my baby?, Yesterda's numbers, Carol
Bluesy rock-n-roll similar to Rolling Stones. Solid album for band I had not heard of before.
Very much blues rock. Ok but amazing.
If the Rolling Stones and The Grateful Dead had a love child.
Good ol fashion garage rock. Would listen again but nothing really stood out to
fun
Song about trimming pubes! 3 stars!
Not bad, got some potential
Делюкс трек, где поётся про shivers in my biba тоже прикольнул. 5/10
Дженерик гаражный рок-н-ролл. Вроде не бесит, но скучно. Ухо цепляется за кавер на Louie Louie, но это кавер, да и у Моторхэда забористее как-то опосля вышло.
New to me - some class tracks but a few filler
Not the best but a good listen when doing something else.
.
Never heard of this band before! Can sound like the Rolling Stones, Elvis, and the Kingstons.
interesting album and more interesting group. they were all over the place and showed a lot of their influences. i give them three platypuses - hopefully they figure out who they want to be
I'm not a huge fan of this album. However, Louie Louie!?!? Are you kidding me? #rockon
Feels like That 70’s Show
The Rolling Stones meet sixties garage. Groovy record with a bit too much filler. A few killer tracks though
Okayish luke & luke vibes
Nice vintage rock'n'roll, but not something I'm to keen on listening to. Actually, I didn't even know about this band, but the resemblance to the Rolling Stones is striking. And I'm not that much of a Stones' fan... :-P
Besser als erwartet - 3
I think I’m kind of hoping for a classic now in this list. This one is okay. I liked a couple songs but maybe only really liked one
Pretty alright, definitely have never heard of it before. My first exposure to this group, and I may look at their stuff again, but it's not at the top of my priorities
Good first half but fades on Side B.
Cross between the cramps and secret affair! Not bad.
decent
Not sure if I liked it or not
Fav Song: Teenage Head
Early Bowie mixed with the Links and Love. Need a relisten
very groovy
Loved it and love the nana
Cool bluesy rock. All of it is pretty good, but few stand-out hits.
Decent garage rock, rock and roll sound, but nothing special or standout. I feel like this genre was out of date even when it was new. Led Zeppelin IV came out the same year and is a million times more interesting.
Decent album in line with early rolling stones
Good
Fun band.
Interesting.
Nothing special, really. A poor man’s Rolling Stones? I like the blues-y-ness, of course. But nothing here is especially memorable. 2.5?
Meh.
Meh. Would be a 3 but the many covers and length of the end drags it down.
Fine in places. Off putting in others. Not really doing it for me.
When to listen: on a sunny summer drive with the top down. I'm not sure I'd categorize this as a must-listen... I liked the covers, I liked the Rolling Stones-esque sound and guitar, but it wasn't outstanding (to me.)
This was...fine. Nothing about it particularly compelled me. Blues rock that's just fine.
From the album cover, I somehow expected better. Not sure why. But I didn't cotton on to this at all.
Sounds like a polished pub covers band, doing passable imitations of Mick Jagger and/or Elvis at any given point. Competent but unoriginal and uninspiring.
It's surprising Old Micky J did not try to steal royalties from this lot like he did with the Verve as they did sound like a poor imitation. Maybe the Stones thought to themselves, that their songs were far more superior and gave them a break. That said, this was on the right side of the fence to be entertaining, there is more chance of me listening to this again, than any Stones LP. They gave it all plenty of energy and their tunes were halfway decent to my ears, better than a 1 star, just.
The most interesting thing about this album was in the notes of it on Apple Music. These read, "Mick Jagger noticed similarities between this album and The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers and thought The Flamin' Groovies did a better job of merging rock-n-roll and pure blues." Well, since I just had the Sticky Fingers album less than a week ago, I'm here to tell you that one of these belongs on this list and the other one doesn't, and it isn't the Stones that we should be excluding. While the Stones album hits all the right notes and provides a series of classic tracks, this album left me thinking "why are we bothering listening to this." There was only one track on here that I found decent which was Whiskey Woman, and because of that, this is not an irredeemable collection. But it's close. Two stars, and that's being generous.
Boring
This album was close to a one-star after some uninspired muddy blues-rock but it sort of won me over by the end. It's definitely long and forgettable, though. I've just finished listening to it and the only song I can even remotely recall is Louie Louie, a classic cover. Fav tracks: Whiskey Woman
I'm just over this era of music. Also knowing their peers, naming an album Teenage Head is a red flag. 3/10 why is there so many damn covers?
What is this? Country/classic rock? But off. I don’t know.
Whiskey Woman
