great record
Nostalgia ftw
Nice
This is a really unique album. It brings in a lot of instruments from beyond the genre to provide an interesting and dynamic sound. something something cowbells though. each song felt different and fresh. 4/5 stars.
All my friends is a 10/10 track. The rest is pretty good too. 7.5/10 Fave: all my friends
I don't much go for electronic music, but I enjoyed this one.
NY ily is definitely the standout but the rest of the album holds up.
New York I love you is such a good track.
I first heard of pavement from a Chuck Klosterman article in GQ that I read on a plane around 2005 sometime so naturally I really wanted to like them but they’ve always been more of a greatest hits band for me than a full album listen. That being said, I appreciated this album more on this listen. Still up and down but 5 or 6 really good songs. Another 3-4 tweeter for me but I’ll round up out of respect to Chuck.
4.2 Fun album
LCD Soundsystem had a great way of blending vintage electronic sounds with post-punk influences while still keeping things fresh. James Murphy’s ability to balance past and present really made them stand out. While I never got as familiar with Sound of Silver as their debut, it still carries his signature style—just with a more polished touch and less of the roughness that gave their first album its charm. Listening to it now, it definitely feels like a product of its time, capturing the mid-2000s sound.
Not sure I'd like the vocals independantly, but it works in context. Good beats.
I started off loving it, thought it dipped in the middle, but they pulled me back in with the last track. Always good to go out on a high.
My kind of dancing music Made me bounce on my butt Great way to start friday
I really enjoyed this! The later songs were my favorite.
good varied album
Awesome album, didnt realize I had a song from his on a playlist already
This album has the dance party vibes of Daft Punk (opening track) and the sentimental noise of Wilco (the outro). It doesn’t have many misses and manages to keep things varied and interesting. I definitely hear that 2000s indie sound of peers like Arcade Fire shining through. But also the continuation of new wave vibes and attitude.
Me gustó! Diferente a otros de LCD, este se siente como que más complejo, más maduro. Muy buen disco.
Somehow missed this at the time; I like it although it does go on a bit at times.
Listened to this at 4 AM because I couldn’t sleep and no it didn’t help me go to sleep. What a fantastic album. i already had all my friends saved because that’s a song I think i would have as the opening song in a movie during the morning wake up compilation. I enjoyed North American Scum and Get Innocuous as well!
Good album.
decently experimental, established such a strong nieche that almost 10 year later it is still at the forefront of it. iconic indie record.
It was just pretty alright the first listen. I didn’t know what to expect and I wasn’t ready for the light whiplash between the digestible steady songs, the ones where he does that weird half yelling thing, and the robotic and stiff ones. It definitely has no flow in that sense, like 3 different people made songs for this and they didn’t do much to coordinate. Styles aside It got better on the second listen tho. Lots of cool sounds, it’s like listening to a Blue Man Group show but they discovered a computer in addition to some spoons or PVC pipe. I think the instrumentals drag on a bit too long sometimes, but I guess it’s supposed to be dance music and I’m listening to it at the office so maybe thats on me.
4.5/5
Was more impressed with this than their newer stuff that has appeared on this list. I dunno, I just felt more of a connection here. Especially with the back-to-back of "Someone Great" and "All My Friends", which very much acts as the heart of this album. Both tracks are resonant and give off a sense of melancholy, complete with synth and piano-laden backing tracks respectively. "North American Scum" is a fun single as well, slotted right next to the aforementioned tracks. You hear a lot of musical influences here, which are then transformed into the groovy, dance-rock, indie rock sound that James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem have curated. Maybe a dud or two here, but still thoroughly enjoyed this album.
Rätt bra ändå! 7/10
LCD Soundsystem, I love you, but you're bringing me down. This guy is a real talent - most of his stuff feels really effortless. My one gripe is that on a number of his songs, he adopts this cheesy blasé attitude, like he can't even be bothered to write lyrics or perform adequately or even ad-lib well. Stupid forced rhymes. Lyrics that fall out of sync with the music on purpose and try really hard to feel like off-the-cuff, spur-of-the-moment asides. Instead, it feels like watching a stand-up comedian absolutely bomb. I'm looking at you, North American Scum (Europe has a lot of MIMES!). I'm taking a full star off for that cheesy crap. But "Someone Great" is one of my all-time favorite songs.
get innocuous: geile steigerung! lustige vogelgeräusche. und was passiert am schluss geiles mit den streichern, klingt fast nach schönberg in einem electronic song, gefällt mir sehr. time to get away: der sänger klingt wie prince. nice pausen und nices ende. north american scum: die elektronischen klänge sind mir zu dunkel, es ähnelt mir zu sehr invariablem techno, und er singt in diesem song für mich zu sehr schreiend. someone great: die soundeffekts hitten. und dass bass, singstimme, synthesizer absichtlich nicht gleich intoniert sind finde ich in diesem fall recht amüsant. all my friends: etwas hektisch them v us: zuerst wirkt es für mich auch lediglich hektisch, aber es gefällt mir, wie die mehrstimmigen vokals reinkommen und den charakter des songs verändern. danach ist es aber viel over and over again… watch the tapes ist irgendwie an mir vorbeigegangen. sound of silver: die lyrics sind hilarious und die untermalung mit dem akkord der singstimmen im hintergrund, wow. geile house-ähnliche zwischenspiele ohne lyrics. der song gefällt mir gut. new york i love you but you‘re bringing me down: ich finde grandios, dass dieser song einen ganz anderen charakter als alle anderen songs hat: klavier, singstimme (unbearbeitet und ehrlich), schlagzeug, bass, e-gitarre, nur wenige elektronische effekte.
I'd actually give it 4.5/5! It's actually so good. I love the lyrics and the beat, it's like a insanity drug. The thing is the first song is not that unique or something to keep you in the album. The first song isn't good for me and not gonna lie I was not going to complete the song because the first song didn't get my attention as the others! The other music like "watch the tapes" or one of my favorites is "Us Vs them" or "Sound of silver" Those both are my favorites! So the only bad thing about is it won't catch the people's ear with their first song.
Gets an Indica 5 star. Catchy is an understatement.
Awesome album that really holds up and is very sing-along-able which apparently goes a long way for me. I shade off from a 5
I have no previous connection to this album but it really impressed me how catchy I found the songs. Loved the funky, electronic, new wave sound. It reminded me of the Killers and Talking Heads. There was even a little krautrock mixed in. I want to re-listen with headphones. Us v Them sounds like the home depot theme.
This album is a lot like the timeline of EDM music as a whole. At first it was fucking awful, but then it got really exciting for a while and after that I felt like I was on LSD. Overall positive experience.
Really enjoyed this a lot of songs here where taken as samples from other artists
Love the song North American scum

Easy 4 star rating here. All my friends familiar to me already, fantastic song, and Someone Great and Sound of Silver are new discoveries. The rest of the tracks are all good but some veer into what is for me irritating hipster stuff. Whole album is about nostalgia for what is lost, very melancholic.
Pretty good but not so huge on All My Friends
Never heard this before. I'm not sure why I've never listened to LCD Sound System. In any case, I really like this album. I don't think the final song (New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down) fits the rest of the album, but everything else on it is fun, engaging and energetic.
I didn't realise I had several of their tracks in my fave songs! I’m not a music expert, but Sound of Silver is one of those albums that just hits differently. It has songs that make you want to dance, think, or sometimes both at the same time. "All My Friends" feels like the soundtrack to every bittersweet moments you get in life, while "Someone Great" is surprisingly, for me, quite emotional. There’s also a lot of fun energy, like in "North American Scum," which is done with the tongue firmly in the cheek and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The whole album still feels smart and cool for it's 17 years, and even if you’re not into electronic 'old' music, you might find yourself loving it anyway, I did.
The first album I ever got for the project! But yeah, still liking this one as much as I did before. I'm a huge fan of their song Daft Punk Is Playing At My House (one of my favorite songs to sing at karaoke), so appreciating this album has more of that vibe vs american dream (which I remember being more vibey vs the dance punk of LCDs other stuff). Love the bleep bloopiness of Someone Great. The dance punk vibe of North American Scum. The Charlie Brown-esque piano that goes through All My Friends. This whole album is just positive vibes, and its nice to get something like that every once in a while.
I liked this one more than the other albums so far. Other than the last two, they were all enjoyable!
I liked the fusion of different styles, and the lyrics are deeper and personal. You can find both simple and complex tracks.
The other day I said I don't really vibe with early-2000s rock... I forgot about LCD Soundsystem. They really appeal to my neurotic American who listens to Talking Heads-brain. Have always slept on this in favor of This is Happening, but now I'm seeing this as the Fear of Music to that album's Speaking in Tongues: harder, dancier, edgier and more experimental. It works a lot of the time. Now I have one more LCD Soundsystem album to listen to.
A few dull patches (the title track is not my favorite), but two all time bangers (New York I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down, All My Friends).
I think I like This Is Happening and american dream more which I think might be an unpopular opinion but this is still a solid album with some really solid songs. I think some people might really dislike the repetitiveness but for some reason it really gets me into a medititate flow. I love the electronic aspect of it. I started getting into post punk more last year and learned a lot of LCD Soundsystem's influence on the scene with their dance punk. This album feels more raw and I appreciate that even though there is a lot of electronic stuff on it, there are moments where things allow for some humanity such as in All My Friends, you can hear that the piano part at the beginning isn't perfectly executed. Based on the music I grew up listening to, it makes perfect sense that I would be into LCD Soundsystem since his musical influences are pretty obvious.
It’s a going out album if ever there was one
This was a nice surprise, saved a few tracks. Will likely revisit. 3.5/5
The first 6 tracks are really good. Interesting production and clever sounds make for a non-repetitive listen. The back three lack the same feel and are therefore somewhat sleepy and non-engaging. Still, overall a pretty good record. 3.75/5
LCDS has never been one of my favorite bands, but this album is undeniably stacked with some of James’ best work. Many songs here that have stood the test of time and shown up in lots of movies, etc. Almost surprised at how many of those were on this album.
Had to be in the right mood to enjoy this as much as I did. These guys can certainly make a beat and layer in interesting sounds. Appreciate people like James Murphy bringing the creativity and I really enjoy his voice. I was thinking throughout that if they sought to make more mainstream these guys could’ve been massive. I feel like New York, I love you proved me right. But maybe that would be too much of a sell out for these guys and I appreciate that.
When LCD Soundsystem plays a Tyler Buckler gets its wings. This is solid. You must be up and about to really enjoy it, otherwise the 7+ min tracks will wear on you. 4/5
I was ready to dismiss this as the peak of empty hipster blog house of the mid 00’s (even though I have a burgoneing nostalgia for that era of music). But this still bumps.
Listened 2024-12-24 @ 9:00 AM I've started listening to LCD Soundsystem in college but I haven't listened to the full album in so long. Tracks 4 and 5 are my favorite of the album.
Really enjoyed this thought it was a consistent and entertaining album with a lot of great songs and lyrics. Honestly think this is one of the best electronics in the 2000s as it connects with the rock well rather than overtake it or just add noise for the sake of it. Solid 8/10
Three great songs, especially "Someone Great," and I'll admit to enjoying the "adult dance party" vibe.
this new disco sound that LCD Soundsystem was instrumental in is mildly euphoric and deeply groovy - i'm a fan.
Loved these vibes. Sounded like a modern Talking Heads
Some great dance tunes on here, but would it hurt to use more than a single phrase repeated through the whole song? I love the punk/alternative/dance mix. It's cool. 4/5
All My Friends and Someone Great are clearly bangers and have been a playlist staple for years. I enjoyed the rest of the album - but have always had this feeling that I should be enjoying the album more. I like it but I don't love it like some people do. I'm almost there but not quite there. So its a solid 4.
Enjoyed!
The “electronic dance-punk” label guaranteed my attention and the album delivers. Fun and catchy, though some tracks too long.
8/10! song about new york stole my heart
01) Get Innocuous! - 8,5 02) Time to Get Away - 9,0 03) North American Scum - 9,0 04) Someone Great - 9,5 05) All My Friends - 8,5 06) Us v Them - 8,5 07) Watch the Tapes - 8,5 08) Sound of Silver - 8,5 09) New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down - 8,5 TOTAL: 8,72 (87/100) Current ranking: 56/389
Slow start, but once it got going I liked it. I’m four tracks in and I really like this. It sounds more like the 80s than 2007 though. I love the song “all my friends”. This is a great album. The last song does not even sound like it should be on this album, but I love it.
innocuous: songs too long shades of new york scene late 70s Television Richard Hell as well as Gang of Four XTC through a detroit motown filter my favetrax: All My Friends Sound of Silver
Great album from a band I really enjoy and fortunately got to see headline Coachella
Really liked this. Solid throughout and I enjoyed the interplay between the synthetic and real instruments. For some reason this felt more vibrant than the other LCD album I've heard and perhaps I should revisit that one.
älä ala laulaa pliis älä ala laulaa jotain paskaa anna kulkea vaan... ok alko mut ei paha viel. ok vähä pahempi nyt. ok nyt ihan hirvittävä.. 794 päivää sitten tuli albumia tältä samalta yhtyeeltä naamaan ja syytettiin milleniaali paskaksi, vihattiin ja suuttuttiin oltiin nuoria tunnollisia ja ensimmäinen ukkometso pakkomielle kohtaus tapahtui. 1 päivä tämän tapahtuman jälkeen kolikon toisella puolella huohotettiin tätä tämän päivän albumia.. ja annettiin ensimmäistä vitosta koskaan... pikku historiapläjäys siinä kiinnostuneille. sinänsä koskettavaa, mutta eihän tämä mikään mestariteos valitettavasti ole. yksi parhaista aloituksista koskaan mutta sitä seuraavat vajaa viisikymmentä minuuttia on oskilloivaa tavaraa välillä liejuvesi-chilling&wibing. no annetaan vittu neljä get innocuous
Pretty cool
This is one that definitely works best on the headphones. LCD Soundsystem have been one of my fave discoveries of this thing. How had I never heard of them before? Would like to see them live. Was considering giving this a 5 but it doesn’t quite get there. Listened to it multiple times, there are some absolute bangers here
Otros discos de 2007: Arcade Fire / Neon Bible, Low / Drums and guns , Amy Winehouse / Back To Black , Amy Winehouse / Back To Black , The National / Boxer, M.I.A. / Kala, Animal Collective / Strawberry Jam, Spoon / Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, Richard Hawley / Lady’s Bridge, Modest Mouse / We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank , Burial / Untrue , Justice / †, Wilco – Sky Blue Sky, Dinosaur Jr. – Beyond, Queens Of The Stone Age – Era Vulgaris, Soulsavers – It’s not how far you fall, It’s the way you land, In Rainbows de Radiohead, EL GUINCHO “Alegranza”, LA CASA AZUL “La revolución sexual”, . MANOS DE TOPO “Ortopedias Bonitas” , HIDROGENESSE “Animalitos” , TRIÁNGULO DE AMOR BIZARRO- TRIÁNGULO DE AMOR BIZARRO...
This album was pretty familiar to me, apparently I listened to it plenty at some point! I really like it, it has its own unique spin on electronic music. A lot of fun and interesting sounds they play with, and good lyrics too. Had a great time listening again.
Real fun album. Classic LCD Soundsystem with the distinct bass/synth lines. Great all the way through.
Overall a nice sounding thing however a bit monotonous. ‘Someone great’ was indeed great, my fav on the record.
Not something I'd choose to put on all the time, but full of creativity and very involving. Some of the songs go on a bit too long for me, but I understand that's a feature as they're meant to be danced to.
Cuatro alto, eh, incluso 4'5
Loved it back in the day, still sounds great.
Very original
I wasn't the biggest fans of other albums of LCD Soundsystem because their mixture of electro pop and rock felt too forced. This album is more coherent though and actually fun. The last track about new York doesn't really fit I find.
Geht gut rein. Sehr gut rein. Nur rein damit.
****a good album. Interesting variety.
So this is where 'North American Scum' is from. I found the album got a bit boring as it went on. Lots of the same sound throughout, but I really did enjoy 'New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down.' Not what I would usually listen to, but I can tell that it's great.
This is honestly probably a five. Lots of great songs and he really defined a very specific New York sound that also has appeal outside that niche. He’s both catchy, danceable and innovative which is a rare combination. Also true: James Murphy has an extremely punchable face and reminds me very viscerally of all the smug hipsters I went to college with. I have no choice but to dock him one point for that, even though it’s completely unfair. New York I love you is a great song.
LCD Soundsystem is so iconic, I hate to admit their better than I thought they were in High School when this music was new.
LCD Soundsystem is quite open about their influences. However, unlike many other artists who draw from similar sources, their songs possess a distinct sound of their own. And this album. their most acclaimed one there is an excellent balance between incorporating influences and creating a unique sound. The opening track, "Get Innocuous!", showcases a clear Krautrock influence, featuring a drumbeat reminiscent of a Neu! album (which I had on this list about a week ago) along with the structural elements that made Kraftwerk famous. "All My Friends" has a structure and lyrical style that could easily fit a New Order song, but James Murphy distinguishes himself through a more Eno/Bowie-esque use of synthesizers and his unique vocal delivery. Speaking of vocals, I find this aspect of the album to be the least impressive. While Murphy's voice isn't bad, it doesn't stand out either. At times, certain vocals actually feel a bit forced. The instrumentals are undoubtedly the highlight of the album. With unique elements such as a cowbell, thumb piano, and glockenspiel, along with great use of drums, synths, and piano, each instrument contributes a distinctive and valuable sound. Nothing feels superfluous, which is a relief. *Sound of Silver* begins very strongly, especially with the tracks ranging from "North American Scum" to "All My Friends." However, the album's quality noticeably declines afterward with three weaker songs. "Us v Them" feels excessively long; "Watch the Tapes" is pleasant with its good drums but lacks anything exciting compared to the other tracks, and the title track also fails to captivate. Conversely, "New York..." may not be the most popular song on the album, but I find it to be one of the better tracks—a fine ballad to close the album.
4.2 - enjoyed a lot, but think with more listens it will maybe get higher
First song I was iffy off the start but the album changed up often enough keep it cool Will I listen to again: 75%
8/10…interessant Mix aus Electronic mit div anderen Musikgenres
This was my intro to LCD Soundsystem. Who knew dance music could be funny? North American Scum still cracks me up today. Someone Great is heartbreakingly perfect. All My Friends is awesome too. And I personally love the Lou Reed-esque NY I Love You. No band is really like them because they are a little bit rock but also electronic. Kinda dance but maybe more indie. All I know is this is LCD’s best album.
I like the vibes of LCD Soundsystem very much! All my Friends is a bop.
Loved it, refreshingly different

wow ... didn't expect this! I liked it ... don't know why though. Great album, even with all the long tracks although 'all my friends' did attack me with that bloody repetitive piano :( Kept me engaged from first track to last with its organic repitition, even that (rather thin) voice seemes to fit, funnily enough I thought the first and last tracks especially good and idiomatic.
Great timing for this one and a certified banger. You have the outrageously funky North American Scum and Watch The Tapes, along with the emotional punch of Someone Great. I never quite got New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down but it makes a good comedown closer, I must admit. I've always considered LCD Soundsystem one of those acts I like the idea of them more than I actually like their music but this was their finest hour and it's a top, top record.
I really enjoyed this fusion of rock, electronica and funk! It was miles better than the other electronic albums I've gotten for this project so far; not as repetitive and with a lot more vocals. I did not love every song on there, but none of them made me want to hit the skip button. Can't believe I've never heard of this artist before! I'm going to check out his entire discography for sure. 4 stars
This was a fun album! I especially enjoyed the final song on the album, it is still relevant today
LCD Soundsystem have such a unique vibe. I do feel 'This is Happening' is the better one and I hope it is included in this book, but 'Sounds of Silver' is still pretty sick. My main issue with LCD is that James Murphy's verse barrages can sometimes be at American Pie level. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it really grates (see North American Scum). 7 / 10 All My Friends, Someone Great and Get Innocuous the bigger hitters here, for me.
3.9 1x airport listen
I think it loses its momentum a bit towards the end but otherwise really good
James Murphy kind of sounds like Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand on a few tracks. I feel like this album is like combining Talking Heads with Daft Punk. Instrumentally, fun album with really good percussion and synth.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Was distracted by work while I listened, so I need to give parts of it a second hear but it was good.
Worst title track ever.
3.5, different sounding rock
I wont dance to this in public but I will when I clean my house.
Great moments of sound design and melody
Not the best LCD Soundsystem but great anyway
Fun listen, it had a good mix of dancey electronic and emo/punkish vibes. Favorite songs were 3. North American Scum 4. Someone Great 9. New York, I Love You (this was the perfect song to end on) 8/10
Pretty repetitive at times but I don't mind it? Good music to work to. I have always absolutely loved that song "All My Friends"
Cool band name. Sometimes sounded like a modern version of Depeche Mode, especially in 'Someone Great' and 'Sound of Silver'. Also reminded me a bit of Talking Heads at times, like in 'Us V Them'. Generally I preferred the songs that were entirely electronic, compared to the ones sounding like it had acoustic instruments in it. My top songs were probably 'Get Innocuous', 'Someone Great', and 'Sound of Silver'. The general experience was a bit mixed. The songs differed quite a lot from each other, and there were some that I liked much better than others. Still, after just skimming through it again I feel like it's quite an interesting album. I'm going out on a limb and giving it a weak 4 because I felt like it was quite different from a lot else we've heard, and they managed to get quite a few good songs in actually. Still, a bit of an uneven album,
Dance rock? Art rock? Trip rock? Rolling rock? Not-a-rock? Can become overly repetitious but lyrics generally make up for this.
Pretty cool but aturulla
Much better than I remembered it
This is the kind of album I need to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy, and I’d probably rate it differently from one day to another. I’d put it at either a 3 or a 4, but it just so happens it’s finding me on the right day. “I wouldn’t trade one stupid decision for another 5 years of life.” Love that line. 4/5 Highlights: All My Friends New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down
14.10.10
Super weird. I like it a lot after getting past the second and third songs that I didn’t care for. A lot of it was super jammin but than it’s like transcending with the last song. Pretty cool.
all good except for "Someone Great" second half of the album is better.
Varied, interesting soundscape
This was a pleasant surprise. I wasn’t really expecting to like it, but thought it was actually pretty good. Mostly, anyway. It feels like a 3.5/5, so I guess it’s only fair to round up to a 4.
Lucky find. I know the group lately, nit early stuff, and this is pretty good. Nice job!
Favourite Song: North American Scum
I don’t revisit this enough
I like LCD Soundsystem, and they're definitely cool, but I'm not always in the mood to listen to them, if that makes sense. Before listening to this, I only knew American Dream, so I was late to the party. I do like American Dream more. But this is creative, groovy, and hypnotic in places. The final track was an interesting surprise and roots them firmly in NY, (which I know is where they're from).
I had heard the name but never listened to an album. Enjoyed it
I get why some might not like this one but it's got a few cracking tunes on it. Its not a relaxing listen, every song is very sharp and "spiky"...I don't have the musical knowledge to describe it properly.
I love LCD Soundsystem and this album has some great tracks but it's also not their best. Maybe other albums are on here? 3.5 rounding up
Great. I have NA Scum on repeat on regular playlists
Honestly, I've listened to this a number of times over the years but this time I was surprised. I think I usually make it through the first half of the album, which is certainly "catchier", but the real quality of this album comes from the second half. Us V Them, Watch the Tapes, Sound of Silver and NY really elevate the album experience. Especially Sound of Silver which probably became my favorite track. While it's not perfect (the minimalist electronic instrumentals are more of a hinderancs in some places than a boon), still a really solid album. 4/5.
Some good some bad.
Good album. A couple of brilliant tracks
A very good album. Lots of variety. One of my favourites from 21st century
Interesting! Didn’t really feel it with he first song but somehow every song sounds to be like it’s a different genre almost, have to see I definitely enjoyed it!
Man this album sounds like they just took songs from the ends of Bob's Burgers episodes and made them into full songs. I didn't want to like this as much as I did. A fun album. 4/5
My favorite LCD Soundsystem album. It just hits all the right boxes for me. Upbeat, nostalgic, and many more.
dance music for nerds
Never heard of them... was dreading to have to sit through an EDM or techno album, and my first listen was anything but joyful. Then I gave the album a second "spin"... and I find it infectiously fun! Though I wouldn't go so far as to call this Rock, or whatever, but I can see why there are so many people more than happy to see this album on the list, and to think I was convinced that nothing noteworthy has been created since the '90s ;-) 4****
This album was a surprise! I didn't expect it to be good, but, it's outstanding! I had fun listening to this masterpiece.
High highs and medium-low lows. I wish I had seen these guys in their prime. My favorite song of theirs, Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, is not on here but some other really good ones are, like All My Friends and North American Scum.
I own this album, and really enjoy their sound, so although this particular selection didn't introduce me to a new band, it's a great excuse to re-listen to a band/artist I enjoy. I don't feel like it's as strong as their debut album (certainly not as light-hearted), but "All my friends" and "Time to get away" are definitely among the band's better songs, and songs like "North American Scum" and "Us v them" help balance things out on the lighter end. And pretty cool that the "someone" of "Someone great" is a tribute to Dr. George Kamen (of group therapy fame) . I know it's purely coincidence, but it's a weird experience listening to this album right after Thundercat's "Drunk" album. They both feel like very personal experiments in a kind of odd music space (even though I know "Drunk" was ten years later).
I was introduced to LCD Soundsystem via the video game GTA IV, which made good use of the track Get Innocuous! mixing the in game gunfire to the staccato drums. The album matches quirky, danceable beats with a flat vocal style that shares a lot of DNA with New York acts like Talking Heads. Apparently, James Murphy hated recording his vocals so covered the studio with tin foil because reasons, hence the album name. So hipster. Much New York. Very Dance.
I knew they existed but never really paid attention to them. To be honest I thought they were a dub band (I mean, who put 'soundsystem' in their name apart from dub bands?). I actually find this kind of mix between electronica and rock entertaining. I wouldn't listen to it all day long, but it's fun. I'm not too fond of the voice that reminds me a bit too much of early '00 rock revival bands.
Great experimental and innovative music with a great flow.
A lovely ode to NYC
Very solid album, but I like This is Happening more
New York I love you but you're bringing me down is fun, the rest of it is too EDM for moi.
Liked the end better than the beginning and of the album
The lyrical content and compositions are are pretty good across the board. Some songs stick around a little too long. The music, although a little flat feeling at times draws my attention. Someone Great and New York, I Love You... are my favorites.
When someone great is gone!!!
I liked this one quite a bit.
A fun album which was well timed with Glasto! I don't have that many associations with them, like I don't have any personal memories. I enjoyed listening to this though. Never done a while LCD album I don't think. Well rounded easy listening
Surprisingly good. I enjoyed the North American track especially.
👏 clap clap
It was alright. I'm not clamoring for more but that teenager song was easy to sing along to
Yeah? Yeah! All my reference points were old man music but I think I got it.
I was kind of surprised this album is in the book. Not because it is a bad album but because I think their self-titled is more influential (and this book seems to favor influential/initial albums) and This is Happening is a better album. Overall, this book needed some LCD Soundsystem in it. I probably would not have chosen this album as representative of them. Someone Great, New York..., North American Scum. All great songs and it is odd to me the middle of this album is the strongest part.
Nice one, growing on me. Will explore them more!
It’s about 10 minutes too long but there are some gems on here.
A really solid listen. There was so much going on and everything thing had a purpose. Definitely added on my playlist.
The numbing amount of repetition is the secret sauce here. Either its pure 2000s life-was-simpler nostalgic ecstasy or an inescapable nuisance. Personally I vote for the first one.
fire and bars and so dancey and awesome
good one, i like that i recognize some of these songs
Deep history with this album. New York I love you but you’re bringing me down is a fantastic song.
I really enjoyed this. I was vaguely aware of this group previously but this was a great listen.
It’s fun, upbeat, gives you good vibes, makes you want to dance! Lots of synth/disco vibes with a modern touch. I love this album, it’s not a 5 more like a 4.5 but it’s a classic to me. New York i love you is such a contrast showing this deeply emotional side to them which I also really enjoy each time. 4.5!
So many delightful sonic New York references, as much as James’ voice has never appealed to me all that much the sonic scapes that he creates are undeniably catchy and cool. This is a solid album that’s held up well.
Such a good listen and a great bookmark of its time. I think i actually like it more now then i did when it came out
Not good
Very interesting work. Always ambitious, never quite the same. Great band.
Very good! I've heard about LCD before, but I've never actually listened to their music. This was very enjoyable. 9/10 Would I listen again? Most definitely
I didn’t start listening to LCD Soundsystem until 2010 when This Is Happening was released. By many fans standards I was significantly late to the party. Either way, I immediately fell in love with their sound and of course I had to go back and listen to their previous releases, their self titled debut and this album, Sound Of Silver. LCD Soundsystem were part of a movement in the early 2000’s New York underground that included The Strokes, Interpol and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and this album really transports you to the scene of that era. I’ve romanticized how cool it must’ve been to be in the middle of that collective. As for this album I love the dirty classic synths, the driving beats, the distorted bass and the relaxed almost punk inspired vocals over it all. The songs lull you into a hypnotic state of movement and keep you there as long as the band deemed necessary. The music is down to a sonic science tested and proven in an underground lab using dirty, rusted equipment, and I mean all of that as a major compliment to the sound. Singer James Murphy is the driving force behind the band and the more I learned his life story the more inspired I was by his musical output. James was terrified of failure through out his 20’s to the point where he didn’t go after the things he wanted. As he approached his 30’s he made a goal with the help of his therapist to break him out of this paralysis and depression and in turn ended up doing the work and becoming a well known DJ in New York. He then turned his sights to putting together a band and making music that combined all of his favorite records he’d been spinning into something brand new, thus LCD Soundsystem was born and has had much success since. I love all their albums but this one has the perfect amount of ingredients that have defined the band and is definitely the best album of theirs to start with.
Get Innocuous! Time to Get Away North American Scum Someone Great All My Friends
Nostalgíu fílingur í þessu. Þetta sound kemur mér alltaf í gírill.
Frábær plata.
Very catchy, each song has such a good, fun style, it's just overall a great album so far.
electronica zoals electronica moet klinken.. geen gewone boenke boenke, maar echte rocksongs met electronica overgoten...
I liked it. I knew a few of the songs already, I'm not sure where from tho
Great stuff!
Holy shit, this is great! I had all but given up on this list, but this brought me back in. What a pleasant surprise. Every song was just straight-up fun. A few moments felt maybe a little bit repetitive, but not enough to be problematic.
Very interesting and fun album, kept me very engaged throughout.
Lot of fun listening to this album. I'd forgotten some of the tracks, and there were a couple surprises, too. Not the best album ever but I really liked it.
Positivt överraskad. Trodde först att det skulle bli en trist lyssning men det här var ju bra. Gillar Someone Great. Lyssnade två gånger. Kul att hitta nytt.
Solid!
a classic, still throw on the live I love you New York from time to time
Great fun and for working out!
Energetic.
Very cool, like that I could listen with my 9y/o Son. North american scum the highlight
Excellent
I am really enjoying this album! I'm not sure I've ever heard these songs before.
Catchy synths and snarky lyrics
Favorite Tracks: North American Scum Time to Get Away New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down
I like the sad turnarounds
Nice electronica.
Cool electronic rock.
good album with great tracks, really enjoyable
This record brings back a lot of memories of my 20s. Still holds up!
Great can't, not my favorite album of theirs
I realized I feel almost the opposite about LCD Soundsystem as Talking Heads: I went into this album thinking that I enjoyed a few songs but didn’t love the rest. Turns out I forgot a lot, every song on this album is great. “Get Innocuous!” is a great dance-punk banger, “Time to Get Away” is a great fuck-you to LCD’s old manager, “North American Scum” is dancy but also a contemplation on what it means to be a New Yorker and how their high culture compares to that of Europe. “Someone Great” is a memorial to James Murphy’s therapist. I listened to this song for the first time the day I first watched the movie Metropolis, and I always associate the two. The lyrics are mostly about Murphy’s therapy sessions but also seem to me to contain some social commentary similar to Metropolis. Add to that the lyric “surprised you were human” and the robotic backing music, and I almost associate the song with loving and losing Maria, the robot from Metropolis. “All My Friends” is one of the greatest songs of the decade and all time, an amazing ode to friendship whose repetitive piano part is steadily joined by other parts in a steady crescendo. “Us V Them” is a weirdly upbeat earworm which is a critique of the music industry, then “Watch the Tapes” is an ode or maybe an elegy to partying. “Sound of Silver” is a repetitive question on what nostalgia really means, and then the grand finale “New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” is both a love and hate letter to NYC as well as seeming like a preemptive farewell to LCD Soundsystem, despite their (first) farewell not coming until years later. Awesome album overall.
This record is the sound of genres in a blender. Live instruments get the electronic treatment, and DJ culture gets thrown in to marinate with Indie Rock. The lyrics are knowingly cynical and the vocals are purposely off-kilter—sung with a smile and a sneer—as on “North American Scum.” But then you get “Someone Great,” and you can hear the vulnerability and the hope for a heart-centered way forward. “All My Friends,” direct descendant of New Order’s “Age of Consent,” splits the difference between resignation and celebration. It took a grown-up cosplaying as a cool kid to make this record. But it took a visionary to give it the polish it needed. In the last decade where Rock n Roll meant anything, LCD’s James Murphy made the case that Rock music didn’t need to be eulogized, just transformed, just reincarnated and reimagined.
Certainly one of the best albums of its style ever released. It sounds fresh 17 years later which is tough for an electronic/dance album to do.
made me bounce on a roof; coming of age scene
Not my favourite LCD Soundsystem album, but still a good one.
Enjoyable album Standout songs: North American Scum Us v Them New York I love you
Didn't like it at first, but it grows on you. It's fun, I will listen again.
Langbesta LCD platan. Hreinlega frábær frá upphafi til enda. Elska hljóðheiminn, skemmtileg blanda af rafdóti og hráum elementum.
The condescending NYC asshole of Lou Reed meets the musical detachment of Brian Eno by way of dance music???? LCD is not the most approachable group, especially for the dance genre, but there's so much complexity and personality behind it. Really relates to my NY roots. Finally starting to get it and their importance
fór framhjá mér á sínum tíma. en ansi skemmtilegt. aftur/meira. 4.
If this album doesn't make you feel young, I don't know what will. Very freewheeling style, with pounding beats and topical lyricism. I get the feeling James Murphy and I wouldn't agree on politics, but I can certainly feel the mood he's setting here on this LP. Occasionally his vocals fall a bit flat or the sentiments are a bit distasteful, but overall it's quite a mood. And that mood says you should probably put a few more pills in you.
poop
New York ily but u r bringing me down
Thoughts before listening: I love LCD Soundsystem, and this is a very good album. I think "All My Friends" is on this one which is a post-2000s classic. It'll be nice to re-visit this today. Review: Once again, the 2000s albums feel more like "my music" than the 90s ones while also still feeling modern sounding. LCD Soundsystem has a cool sound that pulls from 80s new wave and punk (especially Talking Heads) while adding its own dancey, industrial flair. "All My Friends" is definitely a post-2000s classic with its steady driving beat that slowly builds over its 7:43 running time. I also enjoy "North American Scum", "Us v Them", and "New York I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down". 4-stars.
Really really good. I have heard of this band before but never listened to them. I will revisit this for sure
Someone Great es todo lo que esta biennn el resto mantiene el estilo del anterior, pero se ve la verdadera evolución ahi. Asi y todo temazossssss
I know some LCD Soundsystem, and I have friends that are really into these guys, but I never dug deep on the ol' Brooklyn Boys. This was rad, I liked this album a lot. Easy to jam and bop your head to, not over-complicated, but still technical enough for the heads. Will go down the LCD Soundsystem rabbit hole now.
Gear: Hifiman Arya Mix: Kannste nich ruhig sitzen bleiben bei, ne? Musik: LCD Soundsystem I love you but you’re bringing me down Wertung: 🕺💃🕺💃/5
I like this album after listening to it for the first time. I was slightly put off by the long lengths of the tracks, thinking they would be boring and repetitive. Instead it's groovy and full of surprises throughout. LCD Soundsystem will performing in Glastonbury this year so that's something to look forward to.
I like it, very rocky dance, need to listen to more LCDS.
North American Scum // Someone Great // All My Friends //
I consider myself a LCDS fan. But I confess I’m not often in the mood for this record, couldn’t say why, nevertheless, All My Friends and, of course, NYILYBYBMD are timeless classics and reason enough for this record to be featured on this list
I enjoyed a few of the tracks - north american scum, all my friends, sound of silver and new york I love you. Thats almost half the album… will give it a 4 just so that I give it another listen
its pretty good some really good tracks on here also a couple of ass ones 3.8/5
I expected to like it but not this much!!!!! 9/10
After five listens finally see what people like about them.
I love a driving beat. They sound like DEVO I liked the whole thing.
Another one of those albums that I didn’t realize had a bunch of songs I already like. Never heard the whole thing, so this is a nice treat. Funny that I was listening to The Modern Lovers just before this record. And you can hear such a clear influence, but in the best way. There are so many influences throughout: Human League, ABC, Killing Joke, Heaven 17… there’s even a little Tito Puente in the percussions. Very interesting work. Always ambitious, never quite the same. Great band.
Creative melodies & lyrics. Good!
Based on the first track, this band really reminds me of Talking Heads. The main difference is the production is more refined. I'm a big fan of Someone Great, what a sick track. All My Friends rocks, with the continuous piano chord raging in the background but doesn't get boring. There's some dull tracks, Us V Them and North American Scum were pretty bad. The closing song on the album is incredible. Blew me away. Overall, great album, I was surprised how disappointed I was when the album ended. The last song left me wanting more.
I like this. Good rhythms and beats, and it's pretty solid throughout. 3.5 rounded up.
I’ve never lcd sound system but it’s my friend’s favourite. I quite enjoyed it.
I'm a New Yorker and I feel New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down deeply in my soul.
Before I started listening to this album again, which has some of my favorite songs ever, I started to think of what makes an album deserve four vs. five stars. The whole album is cohesive and strong, but I guess the difference comes to the fore when you compare the album as a whole to the individual strength of amazing songs like Someone Great or All My Friends. Regardless, this is a great, great one.
This is an interesting listen, I can't mention any specific songs or albums but it feels like this was inspirational for some newer music I listen to. After a second listen I'm on board with this album, it's great.
Refreshing.
+1
its good but bot more
Pretty spectacular album
Great tonic for a drab, grey UK monday. I enjoyed this.
Nice beats keep my feet moving. Sounds a bit like an electronic version of "The Strokes". Highlights: North American Scum, All My Friends, Watch The Tapes, New York,... - but also some weaker numbers.
I’ve heard a little LCD Soundsystem and enjoyed it so this was nice. It’s a really good album and I can’t really Place why but that’s not an issue. Hearing the last track on the album without Miles Davies is really weird and feels a little empty but that works for the sentiment of the song. Close to a 5 but not quite
the second half of this album is so funky cool indie pop I love it 7/10
7/10 - Very interesting pieces. I enjoyed the constant background in the songs that I liked. Not all of them were great and the ones I liked still felt too long sometimes.
Was hoping I’d love this album but it was just good, some of the songs were a bit to repetitive so I got a bit bored 7/10
Millennial nostalgia at a near all time high, yet I didn’t really want to revisit.
this album is really interesting and has a lot of range imo. also i realised the 1975 must be influenced by lcd bc the start of bfiafl sounds exactly like all my friends - 4.5
this musically is very good fun and good for me but i find the vocals a bit boring
Did not expect to enjoy but I did.
New York's the greatest if you get someone to pay the rent Wahoo North America And it's the furthest you can live from the government un huh huh great album
I wasn't so sure of this at the start. Didn't care much for the opening track. However I ended up really enjoying this album.
Ok, not really my style but better than expected
4.5
Favourite tracks: all my friends; north American scum; new York I love you but you're bringing me down; get innocuous; time to get away
A good heads up on a band I was aware of, but thought they were something else
I enjoyed listening to it, some very nice songs
I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
a pretty fun spin on the electronic/dance genres. definitely has an indie tinge, which i appreciated. and what's most important to me, it feels human, which i find a lot of electronic music lacks. just a really fun time!
excellent album! I knew there were some good tracks here - “NY I Love You” is a favorite - but the entire album is solid and will definitely be in my regular rotation!
Really liked this album which I wasn't expecting to. Have added to library. Favourite song is All My Friends.
Great sound. Pretty funky, kind of an 80s vibe with some disco drums and analog synths. The lyrics are kind of strange at times, but its mostly dance music where that doesn't matter as much anyway.
Super interesting. There’s a lot going and it all works. I think this is one I need more time with to decide if it’s maybe 5 stars.
All my Friends is such as great song, love the way it builds and the rhythm catches me every time. Worth an extra star. Dance music isn't my thing, but this was a great showcase of sound super synth work.
The mix of dance music with punk creates a groovy vibe with attitude. Want to dive deeper into LCDS's catalogue since this album has been my primary reference point since I first heard it a decade ago. *Heard before
Gets a little long but otherwise great
This one’s for the Pitchfork heads out there… great gym music though. Very groovy. I also like the closer a lot. Personally think the follow-up is their finest hour
Dug most of it. Us V Them is a flat out banger. The closing track about New York is excellent but I wouldn't want to hear a whole album of that type of song. There are lulls but a solid album nonetheless.
2007 was a big year. We got married, for a start. There were loads of amazing albums released that year. I was still child free, still trying to be on top of music. I'd slowly started letting guitars into my life. LCD Soundsystem and the whole electroclash-y sound that was everywhere at that time really hit the spot bridging my love of electronica and analogue. LCD in particular found the sweet spot of minimal, well judged electronic sounds with interesting vocals and analogue elements that is just cool. Sound of Silver is not an album of absolute bangers (LCD do them) but really well judged, head bopping tunes with hits of emotional highs. Really good stuff.
I’ve been a big fan of LCD Soundsystem since high school. Love the disco/alt/dance vibe with silly lyrics- like the electronic version of Weezer and Cake’s nerd rock. From this album, “Someone Great” has been one of my consistently favorite songs for more than 15 years. Listening to the different instruments and effects layer on each other is exciting, coupled with relatively melancholy breakup/separation lyrics. A line from the song that I think about all of the time is “the coffee isn’t even bitter, I’m sad it’s not raining.” Like you’re trying to be sad and melancholy but the world just isn’t matching your mood. A fantastic rainy day song, even though the song’s protagonist only can wish for precipitation. “North American Scum” has been another longtime favorite. Overall an incredible album with a lot to enjoy. Very re-listenable stuff of a very high quality. 4.5 stars!
wasn't sure the first time so re-listened and it's a good mix of rock and electronica, overall enjoyed however can't call it a headphones album as it's too abrasive at times and not something i'd put on my stereo so hard to classify.
North America 🔛🔝
Best techno beats in a while
Gorgeous
I wasn't sure what I was going to hear listening to this album, but it was just what I needed. I found my self bopping around the kitchen and closing my eyes to breathe in the sound. "I wouldn't trade one stupid decision for another five years of life."
似曾相识!Back to 2000s
Great drums! Loved Watch the Tapes. So fun!
I like this album. 4/5
Such an odd album, such lovely sounds. Tough to pick a favorite here when some tracks are almost just trolling and others are exposing deep emotional wounds. Favorite tracks: North American Scum / New You, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down
Get Innocuous! North American Scum Someone Great All My Friends New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down
Just a really fun album.
Love it. I don't care for songs longer than 3 or 4 minutes usually, so I'm docking a star.
Very cool!
Very cool band. I feel New York... is overrated, but Someone Great and the opener are highlights for me.
Haha I do enjoy me some cowbell
Very solid dancey album.
Same song over and over but upbeat and fun.
Very fun.
Top quality album
Nice Album. Liked it.
It has a good up beat rhythm to it. Easy to follow and a good listen when you want to kick your feet a bit.
Super solid album: someone great, all my friends and New York are insanely good songs. The other songs on the album are good, but nothing I go crazy over.
Really unique digital sound, I liked the sound but quite a few of the songs didn't work for me. Some of them were awesome though. Weird and experimental, this is one of those albums where I'm glad I'm doing this project.
absolutely freaking incredible music that creates its own lane, makes you dance and sweat but also makes you think. It's like entering into the weirdest party ever, but actually being surprised by how crazily memorable and special the night will be. Some songs are definite standouts all the time, and some only work when you cant notice the repetition (like when dancing)
Was 2007 the year I may have seen LCD Soundsystem at Lollapalooza? Or was it 2008? That seems like something that happened for some reason. If it did happen it was me walking by a listening for a bit.
1. 3.5/5 2. 3/5 3. 3.5/5 4. 4.5/5 5. 4.5/5 6. 3.5/5 7. 3/5 8. 3/5 9. 3.5/5 = 3.55
Good fun. Shades of 80s Bowie amongst others
Never heard any of this album before but I have This Is Happening, the follow-up cd, which I’ve always liked. And this is a really good listen, so diverse, some terrific lyrics & musically so interesting. No two tracks are alike. Too many standouts to list but, musically, Someone Great is hard to top. Then they follow it with All My Friends, which has the most compelling piano intro since Roxy Music’s Virginia Plain, and wonderful lyrics. Terrific album.
I was aware of LCD Soundsystem singles. James Murphy is almost exactly the same age as me, and, as an aged-out former music scene guy, I really related to "Losing My Edge". I especially like Drunk Girls (you should IMMEDIATELY go watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xT6cdfP_cM), but never really tried listening to a whole album until now. Christgau doesn't really like the band, but summarises their viewpoint pretty well when he says "Dance guy or rock guy, optimist or cynic--these are the troubling distinctions irony helps keep at bay", but I think this is just a typical boomer complaint about Gen-Xers. Of this particular album he writes "One song so irresistible it makes you think the other tracks are songs too, which sometimes they are." Most songs are, admittedly, one (or sometimes two) chord grooves extended out to a dance 12" length. Lots of indie bands (especially from the early 2000s NY scene) claim to be influenced by dance music, but I feel like LCD Soundsystem are one of the very few that really understand what dance music is. This is proper dance music played by a rock and roll band. I once tried to beat mix an LCD 12", assuming that they were recorded to the grid, only to discover that the drumming was wild. Who knew? The album draws on the same grab bag of influences that makes up my record collection; krautrock, Berlin-era Bowie, Remain in Light, Eno, Gang of Four, acid house, disco, Steve Reich, etc. I also thought some of it sounded like Severed Heads, although I suspect James Murphy is more an 80s industrial music fan, which is where he picks up the sound. I understand that this isn't for everyone, but it really is kinda tailor-made for me. I have really enjoyed (finally) listening to this all the way through, and it definitely goes on my want list. Is it a true classic? Probably not, but it's got a great beat, and I can dance to it.
Decent album, not everything stuck out to me, but nothing was bad. I particularly enjoyed All My Friends and New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down.
It was the first time I listened to an album by LCD Soundsystem, and I loved this album already at my first listen. Very enjoyable, good quality electro/dance/punk record. It's a perfect balance between accessible but not quite unique and fun without boring/too commercial. I'll come back to this album in the future.
North American scum
Surprise! Really liked it. Maybe it was because it was a good accompaniment to a spin workout.
