2/21/24. This is up my alley: beautifully weird. A lot of random sounds but creative landscapes, also enjoyed the vocals.
There are a couple of genuinely great tunes on this album. Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth and Boys Better are absolute standouts and still sound sharp, catchy and full of attitude. When they hit that groove of fuzzy, slightly sleazy indie rock, it really works. The problem is the length. It is a long album, and there is a lot of material that feels like filler. Many of the tracks drift into a similar mid tempo haze, and after a while they start to blur together. The hooks are not always strong enough to justify the running time, and it loses momentum as it goes on. That said, listening to it did make me want to rewatch Dig. There is something undeniably cool about this era of the band and the whole scene around them. You can hear the ambition and the swagger, even if the album does not fully deliver on it. I didn't like their major hit, thus I lost my interest in exploring their music further. I was so wrong. This album is amazing!
I live in Portland so I suppose I should like this. I don’t know how much of this band I’ve actually heard, but the first track isn’t ringing any bells. This has elements of other 90s Portland bands that I do know, like Heatmiser, but more Neil Gust, with little to no Elliott Smith. Thankfully they sound nothing like Everclear. I probably would’ve loved this if I’d heard it closer to when it came out. It’s a little samey for me on first listen. I don’t mind it, though. It’s fine.

I had heard snippets of this, but never the whole album. I liked it. It had that familiar late-90s vibe that I dig but they clearly have their own unique style and sound. It was a long album, but pretty consistently good.

Very hit or miss album. Sometimes, it felt like something great was about to happen. The tracks would ramp up, the grooves solidify... and then it invariably got weird/lame, never quite hitting the mark. Ah, well. They can't all be winners.

This felt like it was right in my wheelhouse, 90s alternative with driving guitars and great vocals. Started off slowly but built as it went along, I was almost sad when it finished. Standout songs are "Be-In" "Minnesoter", and "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth", but don't sleep on the instrumental "The Creep Out". And I just want a girl as cool as Kim Deal...
Wall of sound 90s alt-rock/pop art rock. Vocals often muted behind the wall of sound and really nothing here that is particularly enjoyable or remarkable. At their best sound a little like Oasis. Hard for me to understand how this is on the top 1001 list other than I enjoy the song with the lyric "heroin is so passe."
Daaaaaaaaaaamn this is good. I haven't liked a lot of the new-to-me 90s and later rock I've heard on the list so far, but I loved this. Every song was so damn good. Definitely keeping this one on my phone and forcing other people to listen to it!

Pretty cool. Gets a little hypnotic sometimes but I like the songs that rock out (Boys Better, Every Day Should be a Holiday). I had fun playing bass to a few of the songs. I don't understand what kind of statement they are trying to make with Hard On for Jesus. I guess some people want to have sex with Jesus. OK. The song didn't especially lift to me to any spiritual climaxes. Pete International Airport is 6 minutes of ambient noise. I'm glad they enjoyed the acid. Maybe they could just save that crap for an album of all ambient noise and release it under a mystery band name like Sgt Warhols Dandy Lost Hearts Spam.
Sounds like typical 90’s alt rock. I can hear Bob Mould/Husker Du, 60’s psychedelic, a pinch of electronica and a big dash of slacker. Definitely drags in spots, and could easily be trimmed to 40 minutes, but overall a good time.
This is another new band to me. Totally dug the vibe when it started. It fell off for me a bit at Orange and never entirely regained its momentum, though it still has some great moments after that. The Creep Out is a solid finale.
Whole album is a masterpiece !!!
solid album!!! this came on a day where the suns out and this perfectly encapsulated that feeling of seeing the sun for the first time in a long time :)
I enjoyed the more powerpop/shoegaze half of the album quite well. The songs that got a bit grungier just didn't stand out to me. The final two, instrumental tracks were interesting. I got lost in "Pete International Airport" but was ready for "The Creep Out" to be over by the time it ended.
This album was a melting pot of all the rock sounds going on in the 90s. Some of it was very Stone Roses/Blur-esque britpop sounding, while there are also some grungy sounding songs mixed in, which is fitting since the Dandy Warhols are from the Pacific NW. Some of the album was enjoyable, while other parts were uninteresting. P.S: Call me anti-artsy fartsy if you want, but the last 15 minutes of the album were so unnecessary.
This album was pretty basic to me. Nothing was particularly good nor uniquely bad. Something about the mix is too washy for me. Hated the last couple instrumental tracks.
Loved the first half, they lost me a bit in the 2nd half. It’s hard to come to terms with the fact that I love “shoegaze” rock
I really, really enjoyed this for the most part. Especially the beginning of the album...it hits the perfect 90s sound that I cannot get enough of. However, the middle of the album then really leans way, way too hard into the lo-fi sound that becomes very hit or miss to me. Then the ending recaptures that feel I really like from the beginning. The drop off is too stark to get the perfect 5 for me, but many tracks from this will happily end up in my rotation
Biting, satirical, nihilist indie pop, at risk of biting the hand that feeds them, The Dandy Warhols want to be cool but not too cool you know? Mood is everything here and they pull it off alongside some entertaining tunes and engaging riffs.
...The Dandy Warhols Come Down is the second album by American rock band The Dandy Warhols. This indie alternative rock (shoegaze) album was a second attempt at creating an acceptable record for their label Capitol. Their first try was "The Black Album" which was rejected, and later the songs were repurposed for a double album "Come On Feel the Dandy Warhols". On this second attempt, the band transitioned from a garage rock sound to a more pop-oriented sound that was classified as shoegaze. This album was deemed a success by critics who liked the hooks and the layered music. Commercially the album performed alright, but it was a bigger hit in Europe where it was certified gold in the UK. While some songs are great, overall I thought the tracks were too similar so they all seemed to meld together into one long droning musical number. My indifference to this album could also be due to the genre's likeness which is one of my least favorite as it's too "poppy". Decent album, but there's many other albums I would listen to again before this.
So very 90s rock. Thought it was pretty tame, nothing crazy; enjoyable. 7/10.
well, that's an album. ...the dandy warhols come down definitely has that alternative, brit-pop sound, though it is very amusing to me they are not british at all. toward the end of the album, it moved away and became more ethereal sounding. not bad, but sort of out of left field. i found the lyrics clever, but i don't think it was tough to save the album. "not if you were the last junkie on earth" was particularly amusing with its hook. "hard on for jesus" is, i believe, satirical. assuming i am correct, i've never heard a song going full throttle criticizing christians quite like this before.
I didn't find this album to be necessarily groundbreaking, but it definitely captures an interesting niche at the time. It's still relatively grungy, and in 1997, that was certainly late to the game, but that said, they mix enough psychedelic rock in here to make it just different enough, existing somewhere between the 60s and the 90s. I found myself appreciating the sound, as well as their tendency to be cheeky and overtly satirical at times. While this may not be their most revered album, it seems as if this is likely the point where they broke out with this sound, making it significant from that perspective.
It’s indie guitar rock, nothing too heavy, some weird stuff, but mostly straight forward alternative rock. No Bohemian Like You, but it does include “heroin is so passé”. Ok.

Ok so this is a very 90s thing and it wasnt bad but for some reason it just feels so so.
Somehow I missed this in '97. One my favorite discoveries so far. Another reviewer mentioned that they knew they would love this just moments into the opening track, I had the exact same experience. Dirty, droney, psychedelia. (The Dandy Warhols > The Brian Jonestown Massacre)

Good Morning and Whipping Tree are good tracks but the rest is pretty bland alt rock that went on for a bit too long.
- First half had incredible vibes - Grungy but with lighter guitar - Gets weird (in a good way) towards the end
- kind of like a more psych Radiohead? - enjoyable
Enjoyed the atmospheric and psychedelic songs a lot more than the melodic ones. Too long for me. Needed to be cut down.

Is this what they call shoegaze? That vocal style just annoys me. Just sing! Some of the instrumentation is good. Lyrics are whatever. Overall, mediocre. Don't care if I hear it again or not.
Overstays its welcome by maybe 3 songs but I really dig this. I’ve also been meaning to watch Dig! for like 20 years.

Fuzzed out outer space sounds. Not really any obvious pop singles. It's weird when an American band becomes a de facto British band. What about their sound "hit" over there and not here? Who can say... I didn't hate it! Better than most of the generic 90s Brit Rock on this list.
Never really listened to them when they were new and it's nice to revisit. Very 90's/early 2000's. Sweet spot.

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Just the right amount of 90s flavor and then when it turned into an instrumental album, the vibe hit perfect for the focused work that I was doing in the moment. I might need to relisten to this at some point.

December 10, 2023 Great album, especially in it's time amongst the plethora of grunge/alt-rock clone of clones. Lot of all-timers on this one.
I had not realised how many of the songs I knew from the Dandy Warhol were on this album.

I'm old enough to have bought this on tape when it came out. It's fine in 2024 I guess, but it was hardly essential listening back in the day. An odd selection.
I liked this one a good bit, but I can’t see why it’s so essential that it belongs on this list.

This was pretty good. I really liked the overall sound of it, but the songs didn't always keep my attention. Probably something I would go back to, because I feel like it's an album that's a grower.

Pleasantly surprised by how good this album is. The Dandy Warhols were never on my radar and I’d never have listened to them on my own accord. This is why I love this project!
Ooh, these boys threw it all in, didn’t they? This is so good. It's like some of the best Britpop, but made by a group of Americans! So much to enjoy here. Rich, layered arrangements with a strong pop sensibility. Really diverse uses of guitar, jangly and psychedelic, but also surprisingly muscular and dissonant at times. I definitely plan to come back and spend more time with this one. Fave Songs: Good Morning, Whipping Tree, Hard On for Jesus, Pete International Airport, Be-In, Green, Orange, Boys Better
This album was decent, some of the songs were really song without lyrics and in some of the songs you cannot hear their voices because it is low volume. I enjoyed this album though
Not bad. Just good. Not great, just plain old good. I like their ideas, but a lot of these songs feel unfinished. While listening there were a lot of songs that had an AMAZING outline and great sound, but sadly left me wishing they went a different direction. Gives me blue balls because I know how amazing of an album this could've turned out to be, yet it turned out just okay. Idea's are there, just didn't come together full circle. This album sits at the crossroads of neo-psychedelia, shoegaze, Britpop, and college rock. What's interesting is that this is an American band. They completely had me thinking they were a British band by their sound and mix of genres (despite the college rock tinges throughout). Their musical lineage seems to circumvent grunge altogether which is notable for the time. Overall, this was an enjoyable album that featured melodic repetition and slow building songs that still had a pop sensibility.
Enjoyed this one, and will probably listen again and explore more of there music

Pretty enjoyable listening experience
There was so much going on and I think I enjoyed. Surely too much to unpack in one listen and I would have to listen again, but I am not going to.
Starts strong but has lulls throughout. Inconsistent but a decent outing. It was my first time hearing this particular album but I have hear other Dandy Warhols songs and I've liked them. I'd be open to listening to this again.

Shoegaze noise. Not unbridled noise, but still enough to be upset by the lack of dynamics. I gotta hand it to these guys, though. They do know how to write some catchy riffs and chorus. The soft songs fall flat and the dull droning doesn’t click, let alone the 4 or 5 times identical songs are show-casing it. I’d say the better songs hit well and if the album were shorter and without the slows. It would be a solid 4
Ok, absolutely loved the sound here. Everything great about 90s/00s alternative (Spoon, Beck, Eels came to mind throughout) but with their own style. Loved the music, not totally keen on some of the subject material. Much was cleverly written, some mildly offensive. But wow, the music! 3.5 stars leanining to 4

I enjoyed this album - I have a soft spot for this type of sound, so I think it will definitely get a few more listens at the very least.
Andy Warhol would love this band. The Andy Warhol played by Crispin Glover in The Doors, that is. They sometimes sound like a cheap knockoff of The Velvet Underground, although they insist heroin is so passé. I can't tell if they mean the song or the drug. Probably both. Sorry fellas. Don't name your band the Dandy Warhols if you don't want comparisons to the influential band the actual Warhol championed.

Druggy album, pretty cool arrangements but boring songwriting and stale production. It's too crisp and I just don't really think it's anything to write home about. Plus they are major assholes. Maybe if I was high as fuck I would give it another star. Or I am missing it's merit. overall i just feel it's rather weak and bland.

Low-fi, fades into the background in lots of places - Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth is the one that sounds like the Dandy Warhols album I bought a few years later, and the track after keeps a bit of that energy. Rest is not really for me, reminds me a bit of the My Bloody Valentine album we had and not in a particularly good way. 2/5.
Surprisingly mediocre. Not a nad album, but I have no idea why it's on this list. Couple of standout tracks but a lot of it is dreary.

When I first saw this album (which I had never heard) on this list instead of 13 Tales from Urban Bohemia, the somewhat higher rated and the one I know from back to front, I ask myself why? Then I put on the opening tracks...nice atmospheric intro maybe a little long, sweet guitar figure, nice sweet toe-tapping rhythm, big crunchy bass and suddenly I'm out of my chair and dancing. Great start better that the start to 13 tales (Godless). As for the rest, pretty consistent album that kept me entertained from start to finish. 4 stars (for the record I would probably give 13 tales 4.5)

I had never really heard these guys before listening to this album. I love how this seems like one cohesive piece.
Space rock and shoegaze have their own unique and irresistible charm. This album managed to bridge the 2 decade long gap between the two, creating it's own charm in the process.

I enjoyed it. 6/10
One admits to a soft spot for the DWs, thanks to the cheeky humor (“heroin is so passe” and “Hard-On for Jesus” and “Cool as Kim Deal”), droning melancholia, and slacker-stoner vibe. All of these elements still sound good here, translating into fairly rich layerings, intermittent just-dark-enough shadings, and the occasional passage that rocks properly. There are just enough arty flourishes – including but not limited to the feedback-y sonic haziness – to keep it interesting, such as the broody-moody closers – the instrumental “Pete International Airport” (another great title!) and “The Creep Out;” the boys knew how to get weird, or least druggily contemplative (though the abrupt cut between the two tracks is unnecessarily juddering). There is, one must note, a non-life-changing undertone to the whole affair, a not-quite-compelling essence, that may be cause and/or effect of their not taking themselves too seriously, a generally laudable attribute of rock records, particularly from the ‘90s. And speaking of, like every other list-making record from that overindulgent era, this one can be credibly called too long (though space for those closers does add depth). Highly rated though on the always important metric of enjoyability. And their anti-grunge stance looks smarter with each passing year.

Fairly forgettable. Apart from the heroin song, which i remembered.
A couple of songs are likeable but sound like post-punk leftovers. I might have stomached them better if they were released over a decade earlier. Fun name for the band. I’ll give them that.
I like the up-tempo singles like “Last Junkie” and “Everyday” and I’m sure I’d get more chuckles if I listened closely to the lyrics. The guitar-strumming intros become predictable after a while and the drawn-out pieces that close out the album seem pointless, like they had a contractual obligation to stretch it past one hour. It’s still more uplifting than a lot of the stuff coming out of the Pacific Northwest at that time.
After almost 1,000 albums there’s one thing I’ve learned is that I really dislike Brit-pop and this group sounds like an Oasis wannabe band. Needless to say, I disliked it.
I've actually listened to the Dandys a bit before. Young me was huge into "Veronica Mars" and their excellent "We Used to Be Friends" served as the theme, causing me to dig into their "Welcome to The Monkey House". I never dug too far into their past catalogue, admittedly. This is definitely more of a drugged-out, stoner version of Blur and Oasis, capturing more of the feeling of being high on record than Oasis did. At times it lags, but it always manages to come back up: peaks and valleys, if you will. My bias seeps in a bit, but I enjoyed the drugged psych pop it was. Call it a 3.5. Pacific Coast Britpop bookended with scuzzy jam is interesting enough, but Come Down gets notabl worse at it plays. The slab of middle material doesn't just separate the good stuff, it turns them into moats.
I don't recall hearing of them before -- maybe: that name is familiar, probably just in passing -- but I really don't think I'd heard any of their music in the past. This is some pretty good rock/pop/garage stuff here. After a while as I listened to this album, it did feel a little repetitive, but I also so rarely listen to albums in full these days -- mostly it's shuffled or randomized playlists via streaming services -- that might play into the feeling of sameness to me. Can't blame them one bit for making a song called 'Cool As Kim Deal' because she is definitely and absolutely completely cool. (I can't quite make out the lyrics so if this song is mocking her in any way, forget what I said about the song, but I stand firm on my view of Kim Deal!) I like 'Whipping Tree' particularly. Sure, has a lot of similarities to Pink Floyd's 'Breathe' but at least in my subjective view, that's a wonderful song to be inspired by. Overall, though, it's good music to my ears, and they are very skilled performers.
A fantastic experience of neo psychedelia with a Britpop sound, despite not being British. Albeit, the first half of this album carries a lot more than the second half. But every song is worth a listen! And the album flows fantastically.
I figured there's a reason I did not listen to this band in the 90's, but they really surprised me here. I don't love this album, but it's got a few nice spots that I wouldn't mind hearing again. Especially liked Minnesoter. Also Cool As Kim Deal, because she was my high school crush.

Good, with a couple of crackers - "every day should be a holiday" for example was one where I had forgotten how much I loved it. Drags a bit (a lot) towards the end, with way too much instrumental noodling nonsense.
9/10 super fun album lots of amazing songs throughout; my favorite of which is probably orange
This has always been a band for me that pops up here and there on playlists or whatever, but I've never taken the time to learn anything about them. I found myself liking many of these songs, even when I didn't want to - almost sounds like a metaphor for drugs, one of the recurring themes throughout the album. I like the bent towards psychedelic rock, but done in their own way. On the other hand, there is something rubbing me the wrong way about this band that's hard to put my finger on - maybe a sense that they're making a joke I don't quite understand.

It's not bad, but feels like radio bait for Brit-rock crowds. It's safe, but could be so much better. I remember liking a few of their songs when I didn't know there was better stuff out there for me. I won't fault anyone for liking it though.

never been in to the dandys like i probably should. I mean i know anton newcombe can be a prick but he was right about them selling out. Dandy's rule ok was a genuinely good album but this one is a classic example of all the jagged edges being smoothed and the grime cleaned off leaving some sanitised bland airplay worthy muzak that has none of what the original band had. at least its not some more folk nonce or neil fucking young.

This album is very hit or miss for me. In general, I like the ones that work more than I dislike the ones that don't, but ending on a very long, apparent Frampton tribute left a bad taste in my mouth. Best track: Be-in

Expected bland British fare from the album cover, but couldn’t be happier to be proved way off the mark. Can’t believe I’ve never really heard much of these guys when they sit at a clear intersection between early hard rock and indie - at times the tracks felt like a mix between Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Django Django, which wasn’t a crossover I knew I needed until today. This LP in particular manages to deftly dip its toes into several prominent genres of the time (including some notable shoegaze influence) without dating itself in the process. The back half slumps off with some wandering instrumentals, but even then it’s impossible to deny the strength of the opening gauntlet and most of the tracks on this album. I feel like a broken record here sometimes, but it’s undeniably albums like these that make the project worth the effort.

Another obscure indie rock band from the 90's, great... The Dandy Warhol's music is like shitty rock music that caters to artsy hipsters (hence the band name). Their music is either OK, or complete garbage. There is nothing in between. Pete International Airport, and The Creep Show are just noise... Why?!? Also, the album opener, Be-In has 1:40 of basically silence for some reason. Overall, some weird bullshit today. The highs were high, but there was quite a bit of complete trash on this record. Also, the album kind of overstays its welcome at over an hr in runtime. I had "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" on a mix CD from back in the day. It's always fun to hear the context of what was always a random lone song that I liked and liked to share on other mix CDs. The more I listened to this, the more I liked it, and it always makes me happy when that happens. This is the sort of music I enjoyed in the '90s (even if I forget that at times), and I quite enjoyed it today. Such a cool sound!
It was very strange that within the first few moments of the first track, before any melody had actually begun, I had that sense that I would really like this album. Then the first few tracks really won me over. Somewhere in the middle it kind of lost its grip on me, but turned it back around in the end.
Love this Britpop by way of PDX sound. The synth gives them a unique vibe that's really fun.
Wow! This album was so great! I think I’ve run across the Dandy Warhols somewhere in my past but was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this. A bit of an emotional rollercoaster with clever lyrics and some very cool songs. Mouth harps, organs, grungy guitars. Minnesoter! A hard on for Jesus! So much fun!
This chugs and grooves along on a layered ocean of textures, with a smattering of catchy hooks throughout. I listened to this whilst mowing the lawn, and it was a good accompaniment. I probably would have cut the final two tracks, which are nothing but 16 minutes of instrumental texture, but overall this did (just about) make feel wu-hoo wooooo. I've heard a thousand bands that sound just like The Dandy Warhols. They sound like every Brit Pop band mixed with every 90's/2000's indie rock band. And yet, this album still sounds fresh and full of energy. All I'd heard of The Dandy Warhols was Bohemian Like You, which is a fantastic song. It takes a LOT to give an album 5 stars on first listen, but this came verrrrrry close.
I fucking hated this band in the 90s. They were always being played on music clip shows instead of cool things like metal, lol. But let's see in 2023. Ok it's not all out hateable anymore. It's mildly annoying in that way that 90s alternative usually is, but it's not unique or awful. Just bland, monotonous, overlong and thinks it's artsy when it's not (see band name). But it could be far, far worse. 3/5.
I've never heard of this band before. They have a very interesting sound, kind of reminds me of some psychedelic rock. I really don't dislike it, although it isn't my normal style for sure. It uses some repetitive aspects to the songwriting, but I don't think that's a mistake, it does add to the effect the songs seem to have, it kind of assists in the groove. I really like the use of the synth in a few of the songs. I'm struggling to think of whether this would be something I would just be willing to listen to again, or buy, mostly because it really just isn't my normal style. Due to the songs being catchy enough though, I think I can classify this as an album I would buy.
According to the Wikipedia page, they wanted to be "distant" from the grunge movement happening in the 90s. Yeah, it could be better to keep out this idea and just follow the flow. Some people are talented enough to oppose some trends, but it's not the case here.

The heroin song was ubiquitous in its era; hated it then, hate it now. Spent the rest of this swinging between thinking it was actually pretty good and finding the whole attitude incredibly irritating. The dullard sobriquet "Minnesoter" nearly pushed it into 2 star territory.
