Wel oke
A friend and I are big fans of music, with tastes all over the place. We love sharing new discoveries and stuff the other has to hear. A lot of overlap. But one place we differ is The Dandy Warhols. He loves them and I just don't get their big appeal - or the big appeal of new alternative. I'll bet the Dandy's have a couple albums on this list. I didn't hate this album and it has some cool trippy or spacey bits from time to time (Whipping Tree, Green, The Creep Out). Boys Better, Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth and Cool as Kim Deal (they aren't) are fun songs too. But overall it felt a little boring or monotonous - across songs and within songs.
Not as bad as I thought. Jaw harp?!
Generally, this was a good album. I really liked the songs that were a bit more atmospheric and ambient in nature. The song "Last Junkie" was AWFUL and dragged the album down a bit. That and the run time was about 20 mins too long. 3/5

It's fine, but don't think I'll come back to it.
OK
The longer the album went on, the lower the score got.
No está mal. Han quedado un poco anticuados.
So you're telling me that not only did The Dandy Warhols release two albums *before* Bohemian Like You came out, but that somebody considered one of them a 'must-hear'? I have so much still to learn... I mean, it's clearly not a must-hear. Nothing on here is new or particularly special. But they do at least inject a bit of their own personality, and I found it a fun, breezy listen for the most part.
Primer acercamiento a The Dandy Warhols. FAVTRAXS: Be-In, Orange, Whipping Tree, The Creep Out LEASTFAV: Minnesoter
Strange low tempo grunge pop with a decidedly Eno twist at the end? A lot of what was expected with some interesting twists
Middle of the road average late 90s US rock.
Interesting. Totally missed them back in the day. Not particularly in the mood for them this morning, but will listen again at another time.
Not bad!
The first half seems almost whispered. Much better from the second half. Quite enjoyable overall
1001 albums Dandy Warhol Some of the Harmonies kinda remind me of Alice In Chains. Grungey/Alternative rock/a little psychedelic rock. The synths are cool. Everyday should be a holiday was a nice change of style. I like all the vibey stuff but was kinda of hoping for some more dynamic/ screamy vocals at some points. Good sounding 90’s rock album. Too long though, I’d like it to be under 50 minutes. Cut the last couple songs maybe? 3.5
Gets a bit repetitive at times but there were some brighter moments, a light 3/5
Pleasantly surprised here. Not that it is an awesome album but rather surprised it didn’t suck. I was prepared to tolerate but actually kind of enjoyed.
Some songs where fives some where meh
Nothing wrong with this really, but it was very repetitive and I got bored a lot. A couple of standouts, but not really much reason to recommend the whole album.
This is perhaps the most Britpop-y, unabashedly stereotypical 90s alternative rock albums to come out of a band from the US of A. That doesn't mean it's all bad, there's some fun rocking jams with a level of pride that has just enough quality to not come off entirely as cockiness. However, I think you'll struggle to find a record with more clichés. Too long? Check. Distortion guitars? Check. Singer with unique yet bland vocals? Check. Way too long outro to "feel something?" Check. It's all just very run of the mill, with hints of something greater bubbling underneath. It kept me intrigued over the four or so days it took me to get through it, but I can't imagine sitting down and calling this an all time great, and I am 100% sure Robert Dimery put this album in the 1001 Albums book just because it sounded vaguely britpop-y and extremely 90s. That's his favorite.
snooooooze... Not if you were the last junkie was HUUUUGE my senior year in HS and it's a great song. The rest of the album, not so much. 2.5. Rounding up cause why not?
i don’t know i liked it but something wasn’t doing it for me
Pre-listening thoughts: just got like 5 albums that weren’t 90s indie rock so the generator was probably like “aw wait u miss it so much! Here’s more! There’s always more!!” 😭 Post/during listening thoughts: wish the vocal mixing was a little better but so far I’m enjoying this well enough. Be In has some nice vocal harmonies (sucker for them in general sorry!). There’s some nice pop influence in this record while still keeping the rock sound and instrumentation. Very power pop at points which I love. Minnesoter is so funny lowkey. Heroin is so passé is one of the funniest lyrics I have heard in a long time. Hard on for Jesus😭??? Some of the tracks on this album are a little too slow and droning for me. Also not a fan of the two instrumentals at the end. BUT the upbeat songs are pretty good. This is such a silly little album lol 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah but I got a good laugh out of it Fav tracks: Be In, Boys Better, Minnesoter, Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth, Every Day Should Be A Holiday, As Cool as Kim Deal, Hard On For Jesus Least fav tracks: Orange, I Love You, Whipping Tree, Green, Pete International Airport, The Creep Out
We can't have the blue album but we get a dandy warhols album that doesn't have bohemian like you on it. Absolutely essential stuff. Felt like the band wanted to make quite a beckish album and the label insisted on a few singles that sounded like their older stuff. Generally liked it but I think other bands do it better, definitely a few tracks didn't go anywhere interesting.
Not the album with "Bohemian Like You"! I generally liked the more uptempo songs than the slower ones. "Every Day Should Be A Holiday" sounds like it could have been made by a bunch of baggy trousered Mancs.
I don’t think there is anything particularly original about this album, but it’s very listenable, vaguely psyche-y power pop.
Pretty solid album, good sound, some songs. Nothing remarkable but reasonably up my street.
Pretty standard late 90s indie. I guess it’s kind of interesting to note that this was happening both side of the Atlantic. But not that interesting.
The Dandy Warhols have one song that I do really like but it's not on this album but this album is still fairly listenable and I didn't turn it off but I forgot the songs that were on it. 3 stars.
The most "I-don't-mind-this" album from this app in a long while. It was perfectly fine. At times it cut through - I was quite surprised at how smitten I became with the repetitive simplicity of the songs. "Boys Better" was a highlight that seemed to go on for quite some time. Not bad, not brilliant, instead occupying a serviceable zone somewhere inbetewen. Also, if World of Twist were American and not so zonked out, I reckon they'd sound like this.
Alright, not life-changing
Not in my edition of the book! 1997. 3 stars. Album 500 from the list. American Oasis wannabees. Starts off well but gets flabby in the second half. Points deducted for excessive wankage - no-one needs multiple 5 minute+ tracks.
All I knew about the Dandy Warhols was their name. In 1997 I was living out of the country, and way more interested in exploring the music of a new continent, so this one slipped by me. This sounds like “what if Garbage, the Breeders and the Lemonheads decided to get together to try to make a Velvet Underground album, with a little Pink Floyd thrown in for good measure.” A bit uneven throughout, but overall a really enjoyable listen! Songs I Liked: Boys Better, Every Day Should Be a Holiday, Good Morning, Whipping Tree, Cool as Kim Deal, and Pete International Airport 3.5⭐️
As someone who likes "Bohemian Like You" from their mext album, I dound this album a bit of a let down.
Not if you were the last junkie has always been a favorite
I only know bohemian like you by the dandy warhols for a reason
Pretty okay
Fun power pop, plays light Sugar demos.
is fine
All the ingredients are there for a decent garage rock influenced indie album, but the songs lack any real arrangement flair to make it a solid recommendation.
Never listened to it before (obviously knew the hitters) a deep dark psychedlilla pop not dismillar to the doors. Intersting lyrics and sence of counter. However half way through just sounded like it self and kinda ran out of steam.
Fairly generic indie landfill. Competently done, but hardly brought anything new to the party
Lovely jangly guitars and generally upbeat lyrics. I feel like they are a force for good, but a bit too nice and are in their comfort zone.
Yet another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth still hits the nostalgia notes! The rest of the album is fine, a bit wishy washy... but yeah, I agree: Every Day Should Be a Holiday!
The Dandy Warhols will always be iconic for giving us "We Used to be Friends", the theme song for Veronica Mars. That song isn't on this album though, so I'm going in blind here (just kidding, I've listened to other Dandy Warhols songs before)! I don't really care for the shoegaze elements, but I like when they get more upbeat and into more indie rock territory. An interesting sound overall, but not something I think I'll listen to often.
Hyvää keskinkertaista rokkia taas. Hyvää kuunneltavaa, mutta yksittäiset kappaleet ei niin loista. Kappaleet on aika nestemäisiä eikä niissä niinkään on säkeistöjä. Myös vähän ambienttejä, mutta muuten sitä perus ysäri alt rock soundia. Ei parhaita kappaleita
It’s ok.
good.
Nice I guess
Knew this band for the hits but this album is a very cool foray into something much more interesting
Two blinding singles surrounded by a lot of filler. Some better than others, but those two singles are funny, catchy and cool!
Better than I was expecting. Close to a 4 except I’m not sure I’d ever put it on again.
Surprisingly not bad
90% of this is four chordy, the exact same tempo, wishy washy, interchangeable. Whipping tree is the first time the tempo changes, but then it's that tempo for the next song
Another victim of the evil curse placed onto 90s bands that forced them to stretch out their albums to lengths of over an hour. This could have been an amazing album if it was only like 30 minutes long. Cut out the weird pointless noodling and Silent Hill ambience at the end. I like atmospheric tracks, but that shit just refused to go anywhere. It was like listening to someone trying and failing to start up their car for 20 minutes.
Enjoyed it, especially the really long last track
Dandy indeed
A decent Brit pop rock album by a band with a lame name. Very 90s style that is reminiscent of other bands but not nearly as popular as oasis. Overall it’s good. Fits all the qualifications for this list again. 6.3/10
There's a little bit of a Pavlovian reaction to hearing the opening drums on Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth. It takes you right back to being 13 or 14 and thinking that the Dandy's were very cool indeed. Overall, it's decent enough, and quite listenable, if totally paint by numbers. Too long by half, but glad to have heard it.
Call me a dandy because I enjoyed this album a lot! Felt like a true late 90's rock type album. Even listening to it reminded me of the 90's. I kept Not if you were the last junkie on earth and Every Day Should Be a Holiday. Some really fun stuff.
Found myself liking this a lot more than I expected. Initially I assumed they were British, but nope - American. The album has a lot of dud songs, but also a handful that really caught me. It's this kind of grungy alt-rock that isn't always distinct, but they do a few cool things with it. Favorite tracks: Boys Better, Minnesoter, Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, Good Morning, Hard On for Jesus (love these track titles). Album art: Part of why I wasn't expecting much, this cover's about as indistinct as the more forgettable tracks on here. It's, what, a shot of a wall from an angle? I see a TV up there, it just sucks. 3.5/5
I like em ok but surprised to see this on the top 1000 list.
I know I've heard their name before, but I'm not sure I've ever heard the Dandy Warhols' music before. "Be-In" started off almost like the Chemical Brothers, which I thought was a good start, but then kind of veered into that (later) 90s muddled and flat wall of sound/noise with equally muffled lyrics (or the fuzzy brooding sound, like on "Orange"). Not that there's anything wrong that, of course, but they're not as distinctive as I want them to be. (What they need, of course, is an electric jug to go with the tambourine. :) I *did* enjoy their single "Every day should be a holiday", and the final track "The Creep Out". I *will* say, though, that whoever created and edited the album's Wikipedia entry didn't do them any favors; it's one of the more disappointing album descriptions that I've come across with this collection. Too bad, as I wanted to find something to up their intriguing-factor and my rating....
much better than I expected given the name but I am sorry it's not dandier. I liked the fuzzy sound of the album and thought the first four songs were terrific, and then it just became a little more of the same. torn between a 3 and a 4 on this one.
Fed larm! Ved ikke hvorfor jeg først hører det nu, men det er noget jeg kommer til at høre igen
The album was very meh. No song stood out. The sound was OK.
I probably would have been a big fan of this, if I'd discovered it when it came out. As it is, it feels more like a late-90s curio piece. Not bad, just of its time
I went on a bit of a Dandy Warhols kick after getting this album & ultimately think 'Welcome to the Dollhouse' and 'Thirteen Tales' are better. This isn't terrible but definitely gives a 'throwing stuff at the wall' vibe (with one commercial-ready single) while the other albums have a more cohesive yet still interesting sound.
Didn't listen to the whole thing but first 3 songs were ok. Might deserve a deeper dive but I am not going to do that. haha.
Pete International Airport anyone? I think I've listed to that song on repeat for endless hours in a row, unwittingly. Who knew you could sell records by recording that?
Love it super fun would listen to againe
Didn’t realise the Dandy Warhols were American, always thought they were British. This is a good shoegaze/britpop album, enjoyed it, just drags a bit in places for me to want to add to my frequent rotation
Dandy's Gonna Warhol
an interesting mix of psychedelic and shoegaze that makes for a fun atmospheric sort of vibe.
Perfectly alright. the vibe suits me pretty well and i feel like any of the songs of this album could be used as an end credit song for a 2000s movie. do i think that there needs to be 15 minutes of straight instrumental at the end? no. but the atmospheric shit on this hits. top 3 - whipping tree, good morning, orange
Some weird stuff, some high highs. Pretty fun overall
Be-In // Orange //
...
I thought this album was cool, but didn't really understand why it was significant relative to other albums that came out in this period/subgenre. Overall, a fun listen, though 3/5
Nothing special.
Solid
It's not a bad album in the genre. If I ignore the lyrics & lead vocals, musically they have some great pop sensibilities. Decidedly dated & maybe a bit "safe" but for me preferable to the overly-produced stadium grunge that was taking center stage at the time.
Forgettable
Easy to listen to but not particularly catchy and no stand out tracks for me.
Musically great, lyrically/vocally not so much.
Don't remember much about this. I seem to think it was decent, but uneventful.
First song has me stoked. I had heard of the Dandy Warhols before but I didn't remember what genre they were. I was pleasantly surprised that they're like a 90s sounding psych rock band. First song really grabbed my attention. 7 minutes, psych and shoegaze rock, and with synths? After listening to this album, there were some fun and silly songs that were enjoyable but there were also a lot of snoozefest songs.
This is a cool record. The Dandy Warhols were one of the first indie bands I got into. I almost feel like they were ahead of their time, because they never really got that big. I used to listen to this album and Thirteen Tales when I would snowboard. I really love the psychedelic elements on this album. It's got all the weirdness and strange sounds that you would ever want. It also has really cool mono sounding guitar riffs, which I really enjoy.
this was fine. the epitome of fine. not sure why i had to listen before i died. sure, i liked a few songs, but this isn't even the album with their big hit (to me, a former teen girl who loved veronica mars) on it. so like. why.
"The Dandy Warhols Come Down" is the second studio album by The Dandy Warhols, released in 1997. The album showcases the band's psychedelic rock sound, with its dreamy melodies and hazy production. Songs like "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" and "Boys Better" are highlights, with catchy hooks and a laid-back vibe. However, while the album has its moments, it suffers from inconsistency. Some tracks feel like filler, lacking the strong melodies and hooks of the band's best work. Additionally, the album's production can be a bit muddy at times, obscuring the band's musical prowess. Overall, "...The Dandy Warhols Come Down" is a decent album that will please fans of the band's retro-rock sound, but it falls short of being a standout in their discography. It receives a rating of 3 out of 5.
The silly band name put me off them, but quite a bit of it was surprisingly listenable. I did some research and found 'Bohemian like you' which is better than anything on this album, but on the whole, it's still pretty good.
pretty cool little album although it does sound a bit dated and has that mid-late 90’s sound that almost everyone had back then. having said that, a fun listen.
Never listened to them more than a song or two. Not bad but a few songs were too drawn out and boring.
3.5
Hey, it's the "Bohemian Like You" and "We Used to Be Friends" guys! Onto the album itself, this is probably the most britpop-sounding album from a non-Brit group. Not a slam or anything, the singles really pop and the overall sound they bring is just different enough. Middle of the album was really strong, carried by the big single "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth". Rest of the album didn't do much for me, as a few songs had a tendency to drone on I feel (especially towards the end of the album). I find it difficult to give this anything more than a 3 here.
I'd heard the name of this band before but have never listened to them. It had a neat little sound but again, the album is too long and runs out of steam 2/3 of the way through, especially ending on exceedingly mediocre long instrumental tracks.
Hard On for Jesus?
Absolutely love the main single, the rest of the album falls a bit flat for me 2.8
I love grunge guitar. I really do but I hate showgaze as much as I love grunge. There are good, even great moments on The Dandy Warhols Come Down, Not If You Were The Last Junkie on Earth is a fantastic pop song. Lot of funny funny titles in general. It’s not enough for 3 stars 5.5/10
Surprisingly decent and diverse for an album with such a terrible cover, by a band with such a lame name. I may even revisit.
Kind of catchy, no song excepting. However, not my thing although I can totally dig folks getting sweet vibes off their tunes.
Some great stuff but some rather offbeat material as well. Certainly not my favorite David Bowie album.
Big Oasis vibes I thought. This wasn’t bad. Kind of experimental at times but nothing made me perk up.
I liked the lighter, more poppy songs much better than the dense shoe gaze sounds. Maybe they could have been more commercially successful with a more consistent style?
Seems like they were influenced by the Velvet underground in more ways than one. The addition of power pop elements made this easier for my to digest than other post-punk from this time.
I liked this but can't say it's the most innovative sound- I can hear a lot of other bands and vibes in there. It's 1997 so right in the middle of all sorts of sounds going on. Nicely produced too.
never actually listed to this bad before, which is odd because it seems right up my ally. All in all, pretty decent. I'm sure I would like it more now had I listed to it back in the late 90s when first released.
Destacaría el tema más famoso, "Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth", y me gustan especialmente "Every Day Should Be A Holiday" y el sonido épico de "Good Morning".
Everything about this album made it seem like it would be just right for me. A 90’s rock band with a 60’s-inspired sound. I’ve been here before with this project. But this ain’t it. The album has a unified sound to it, but it’s almost too unified. Many of the songs sound the same. I literally inserted a melody of the first song into the second in my head, and it worked. I wanted to like this album, but between its repetition, its uninspired lyrics, and its length (including songs that felt like instrumental filler…?), I just can’t get behind this one. It’s getting 3 stars because I can’t give 2.5. I almost always lean toward giving a well produced album that just wasn’t for me 3 stars because I give it the benefit of the doubt that it’s good, just wasn’t my taste. But this really gets 2.5 stars. Standout tracks: Be-In, Orange, Not If You Were the Last Junkie On Earth
Fine, good, liked it. I feel like 4 is too generous, but 3 feels too stingy. It's a solid 3.5
This album started off so strong! I was liking the alt-rock vibes, but then it went downhill from there. It wasn't too bad, and some songs were really enjoyable, but there were a few that just went on forever for no reason, and just made me feel annoyed and a little sad.
3.3 - Never thought I'd give a listen coz this record here is so passé...
Didn’t listen to them in the 90s. They are ok, a few good songs and also ones that I remember now. Some songs are very slow, would this fall under the shoe-gaze category? Kinda close I think.
For a 66 minute album, this goes by pretty quickly. Pretty decent "britpop" from an American band. I like the mouth harp. 3.2/5 Best track(s) : Every Day Should Be a Holiday, Cool As Kim Deal
Leuk, ambulance Ltd achtig
You know those 'indie' CDs that popped up everywhere around this time, Shine and all that. Remember how they generally felt way more commercial and less good than the old Indie top 20 vinyls you used to get a few years earlier? And kind of how it signified indie's slow absorption into the mainstream where it had most of its edges knocked off and got so boring people eventually referred to the whole scene as 'landfill'? You recognise that? Well that's the Dandy Warhols, as a phenomena, and a feeling. They've got a couple of half decent tracks that passed the time back in the day but they are by their very essence inessential, and an hour of it can fuck off. The fact the second track was a single I have never heard before in my life despite the ubiquity of the other two is very telling. Orange is quite good though. As is I Love You. These slow stoner tracks. I'd probably say the last 7 tracks are a bit nothing. In spite of everything though I don't hate it, it's alright, it just doesn't belong in this list. Far more important albums were excluded, even from 1997.
3 stars
I liked it, but someone really needed to force them to trim 15 minutes off of this thing.
To be honest this was a lot better than I expected it to be
I wanted to love this more than I did.
I think of this band as a two-hit wonder, even though Spotify is telling me “not if you were the last junkie on earth” isn’t even their second-biggest song. Let’s see how the rest of the album does. I like the rock stuff. Less the experimental/droney/shoegazey stuff.
Surprisingly interesting and enjoyable
Decent as well, nothing too exciting for me. I liked the general musical style, found the songs (mostly the lyrics) to be fairly 1-dimensional and repetitive. The last 2 songs, Pete International Airport and The Creep Out, I would have left on the cutting room floor, a 15 minute long ambient vibe was all that was.
If it were 2004 I'd probably 4 star this
It’s definitely Ohio rock. It’s good but as redundant as a corn field. It’s hard to discern the tracking due to the monotonous, repetitive lyric structure. Decent production and a few good ones in an otherwise moist peat bog.
Grunge vibes. I liked the the slow pace of Orange. Reminded me of Matt Reeves Batman. I was jammin oretty good in the car, but as I listened i kept thinking "this is good, but if Im gunna listen to this kind of music Id rather listen to Nirvana" The album switched it up in Everday Should be a Holiday, it sounded a lot more new wave 80's. Didnt love it, didnt hate it
Ihan menevä setti. Pop-rockia kaikissa sen muodoissa eikä kaksi kuuntelukertaa tehnyt tiukkaa.
Kind of drone-y, ok ish. Their inspiration, Galaxie 500, is better.
I’m at a real conundrum with this album. On one hand this album feels like a tour through every 90s music troupe; you have the heavy synth, coffee shop grunge, whispering into a mic over a 3 note progression, and songs made for DreamWorks montages. Part of me feels really nostalgic about, the other half thinks they’re doing it satirically. I get the feeling that they’re making fun of me…but I also respect them for it. It's a weird thing to make an album almost entirely ironically but I get the feeling that we saw their true style in the last two tracks.
Just kind of underwhelming. A proper thought never really came to my mind throughout the length of this album. It was just alright. Nothing awful but just rock.
another album that's just fine. just eh. i just didn't hear anything that's... that interesting. lyrics are fine. guitar chugs are, they're chuggin. at periods it sounds like the most... bored rock band i've ever heard. it's just. fine.
Den här plattan behöver de inte skämmas för.
I didn't know a lot about The Dandy Warhols before listening to ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down, and I'm still not sure how much I know know. I was familiar with their name, and roughly know the time of their break into pop-culture. After listening to the album, I can't say that I have a good idea as to when I would want to listen to what The Dandy Warhols have to offer. I didn't dislike the album, I'm just not sure when I'd come back. Some of the ambient-ish, non-vocal tracks were interesting, but sometimes they suffered a similar fate to the tracks with lyrics = too much of a blur of noise. I worried that if I paid more attention to the lyrics I might like some of the songs less. Then I looked up the lyrics and I did like the song less. There were a few tracks that I might come back to ("Be-In", "Every Day Should Be a Holiday", "Whipping Tree"), but with at least three tracks that I firmly disliked ("Minnesoter", "Green", some track that mentions Jesus) this album can't get past 3 stars = okay for once, but not worth a second visit.
I had heard snippets of this, but never the whole album. I liked it. It had that familiar late-90s vibe that I dig but they clearly have their own unique style and sound. It was a long album, but pretty consistently good.
Yeah it’s fine (2.5/5)
Not bad. Got a little tired of the feedback tone though. Get's a bit redundant.
Very hit or miss album. Sometimes, it felt like something great was about to happen. The tracks would ramp up, the grooves solidify... and then it invariably got weird/lame, never quite hitting the mark. Ah, well. They can't all be winners.
3.5
Pretty cool. Gets a little hypnotic sometimes but I like the songs that rock out (Boys Better, Every Day Should be a Holiday). I had fun playing bass to a few of the songs. I don't understand what kind of statement they are trying to make with Hard On for Jesus. I guess some people want to have sex with Jesus. OK. The song didn't especially lift to me to any spiritual climaxes. Pete International Airport is 6 minutes of ambient noise. I'm glad they enjoyed the acid. Maybe they could just save that crap for an album of all ambient noise and release it under a mystery band name like Sgt Warhols Dandy Lost Hearts Spam.
Sounds like typical 90’s alt rock. I can hear Bob Mould/Husker Du, 60’s psychedelic, a pinch of electronica and a big dash of slacker. Definitely drags in spots, and could easily be trimmed to 40 minutes, but overall a good time.
This is another new band to me. Totally dug the vibe when it started. It fell off for me a bit at Orange and never entirely regained its momentum, though it still has some great moments after that. The Creep Out is a solid finale.
I enjoyed the more powerpop/shoegaze half of the album quite well. The songs that got a bit grungier just didn't stand out to me. The final two, instrumental tracks were interesting. I got lost in "Pete International Airport" but was ready for "The Creep Out" to be over by the time it ended.
This album was a melting pot of all the rock sounds going on in the 90s. Some of it was very Stone Roses/Blur-esque britpop sounding, while there are also some grungy sounding songs mixed in, which is fitting since the Dandy Warhols are from the Pacific NW. Some of the album was enjoyable, while other parts were uninteresting. P.S: Call me anti-artsy fartsy if you want, but the last 15 minutes of the album were so unnecessary.
I didn't find this album to be necessarily groundbreaking, but it definitely captures an interesting niche at the time. It's still relatively grungy, and in 1997, that was certainly late to the game, but that said, they mix enough psychedelic rock in here to make it just different enough, existing somewhere between the 60s and the 90s. I found myself appreciating the sound, as well as their tendency to be cheeky and overtly satirical at times. While this may not be their most revered album, it seems as if this is likely the point where they broke out with this sound, making it significant from that perspective.
It’s indie guitar rock, nothing too heavy, some weird stuff, but mostly straight forward alternative rock. No Bohemian Like You, but it does include “heroin is so passé”. Ok.
Decent
5.5/10
Good
I was surprised that I liked this album so much.
Nothing stood too far out for me except some fun lyrics.
Didn't manage to listen to all of this but enjoyed what I heard. 3*
Reminds me of the mid-late 2000s.
This seems like music that Jimmy Fallon could really shake a tambourine to.
Bit generic.
- kind of like a more psych Radiohead? - enjoyable
Pretty dang 90’s
Is this what they call shoegaze? That vocal style just annoys me. Just sing! Some of the instrumentation is good. Lyrics are whatever. Overall, mediocre. Don't care if I hear it again or not.
The Dandy Warhols have always been Brit Pop from space for me. This album is a little long but probably because it’s the deluxe version
Fuzzed out outer space sounds. Not really any obvious pop singles. It's weird when an American band becomes a de facto British band. What about their sound "hit" over there and not here? Who can say... I didn't hate it! Better than most of the generic 90s Brit Rock on this list.
solid all around, really liked the last few tracks but overall nothing super special. 3.5
so mid can't say much about it was so underwhelming but still a bit better than the last album since none of the songs were skippable
the spring sounds on minnesoter are so funny orange and i love you are good heroin is so passe love whipping tree "hard on for jesus" emilycore the last few songs were more my speed ngl but overall kind middling but not bad 3/5
Noh parempaa kuin eilinen.. Yritystä löytyy albumilla näennäissielu ja välillä joutui ihan kuuntelemaan että popitustahan sieltä tulee jonka seassa yritystä.. yritys kohtalaista...
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Just the right amount of 90s flavor and then when it turned into an instrumental album, the vibe hit perfect for the focused work that I was doing in the moment. I might need to relisten to this at some point.
Thought this was good. I didn’t know of these guys, I think I would have really liked them.
I had not realised how many of the songs I knew from the Dandy Warhol were on this album.
I'm old enough to have bought this on tape when it came out. It's fine in 2024 I guess, but it was hardly essential listening back in the day. An odd selection.
Last two songs dragged, but not bad
This was pretty good. I really liked the overall sound of it, but the songs didn't always keep my attention. Probably something I would go back to, because I feel like it's an album that's a grower.
Knew this one already. I like it, but the songs sorta tend to blur together. I think I like it a little less than I remembered liking it overall. Didn't totally hold up for me, but still good. 3/5
This album was decent, some of the songs were really song without lyrics and in some of the songs you cannot hear their voices because it is low volume. I enjoyed this album though
Not bad. Just good. Not great, just plain old good. I like their ideas, but a lot of these songs feel unfinished. While listening there were a lot of songs that had an AMAZING outline and great sound, but sadly left me wishing they went a different direction. Gives me blue balls because I know how amazing of an album this could've turned out to be, yet it turned out just okay. Idea's are there, just didn't come together full circle. Personal Favorites: Orange, Minnesoter
Może być. Początek lepszy niż końcówka. Mocne 3/5
Pretty enjoyable listening experience
There was so much going on and I think I enjoyed. Surely too much to unpack in one listen and I would have to listen again, but I am not going to.
Starts strong but has lulls throughout. Inconsistent but a decent outing. It was my first time hearing this particular album but I have hear other Dandy Warhols songs and I've liked them. I'd be open to listening to this again.
It was alright!
Shoegaze noise. Not unbridled noise, but still enough to be upset by the lack of dynamics. I gotta hand it to these guys, though. They do know how to write some catchy riffs and chorus. The soft songs fall flat and the dull droning doesn’t click, let alone the 4 or 5 times identical songs are show-casing it. I’d say the better songs hit well and if the album were shorter and without the slows. It would be a solid 4
Strange album for me. Some songs are awesome, quirky, shoegaze. Others are kinda boring pop songs. I think with a few more listens I would like it more
Fun rock record.
I liked it.
It’s fine
This was pretty enjoyable but not super memorable
Pop-rock más cercano al pop con algunas canciones más elaboradas y otras, un tanto más oscuras. No me ha producido nada especial escucharlo
Rock album with songs ranging from lame to competent. There is no real heavy hitter, though. 3/5
Rating: 5/10
Really liked some of this but felt it was a little bloated and bogged down a few times.
Best song - Minnesoter
Some pretty good beats, but none of these songs needed to be nearly as long as they were.
Emblematic of their era. Not much here for me personally.
Full of that pre-millenia melancholy that permeates so much 90s music, but a tad too much bloat to really push it for me.
Seems built around one good/poppy song - rest was a bit a dull for me
Andy Warhol would love this band. The Andy Warhol played by Crispin Glover in The Doors, that is. They sometimes sound like a cheap knockoff of The Velvet Underground, although they insist heroin is so passé. I can't tell if they mean the song or the drug. Probably both. Sorry fellas. Don't name your band the Dandy Warhols if you don't want comparisons to the influential band the actual Warhol championed.
I thought this was a cool little piece of power pop. Definitely will be looking to check out some more of their catalogue
I wanted to like it more
This is pretty good, but I don’t know why everyone was everyone was spunking themselves about psychedelia in the 90s. Hope it doesn’t come back again
Bit grungy vocals is a turnoff but this album was alright really
Good, but this style of music does not do it for me at all.
Background music, nice but not very memorable
dandy
Pretty decent 90's grungey kind of alt rock. Nothing outstanding or bad. 3.5
Hazy
I enjoyed it. 6/10
медитативные они такие, в примерно одной тональности) не подожгло
Fairly forgettable. Apart from the heroin song, which i remembered.
I like the up-tempo singles like “Last Junkie” and “Everyday” and I’m sure I’d get more chuckles if I listened closely to the lyrics. The guitar-strumming intros become predictable after a while and the drawn-out pieces that close out the album seem pointless, like they had a contractual obligation to stretch it past one hour. It’s still more uplifting than a lot of the stuff coming out of the Pacific Northwest at that time.
I don't recall hearing of them before -- maybe: that name is familiar, probably just in passing -- but I really don't think I'd heard any of their music in the past. This is some pretty good rock/pop/garage stuff here. After a while as I listened to this album, it did feel a little repetitive, but I also so rarely listen to albums in full these days -- mostly it's shuffled or randomized playlists via streaming services -- that might play into the feeling of sameness to me. Can't blame them one bit for making a song called 'Cool As Kim Deal' because she is definitely and absolutely completely cool. (I can't quite make out the lyrics so if this song is mocking her in any way, forget what I said about the song, but I stand firm on my view of Kim Deal!) I like 'Whipping Tree' particularly. Sure, has a lot of similarities to Pink Floyd's 'Breathe' but at least in my subjective view, that's a wonderful song to be inspired by. Overall, though, it's good music to my ears, and they are very skilled performers.
I figured there's a reason I did not listen to this band in the 90's, but they really surprised me here. I don't love this album, but it's got a few nice spots that I wouldn't mind hearing again. Especially liked Minnesoter. Also Cool As Kim Deal, because she was my high school crush.
Lange zit, maar wel de moeite waard!
Dit klinkt best wel lekker eigenlijk
Not bad.
Good, with a couple of crackers - "every day should be a holiday" for example was one where I had forgotten how much I loved it. Drags a bit (a lot) towards the end, with way too much instrumental noodling nonsense.
It's not bad, but feels like radio bait for Brit-rock crowds. It's safe, but could be so much better. I remember liking a few of their songs when I didn't know there was better stuff out there for me. I won't fault anyone for liking it though.
Pretty good. Album a bit too long and lagged at times.
at least its not some more folk nonce or neil fucking young
Loads better than I anticipated. Some solid songwriting and musicianship
Not a bad rock sound, but drags on with no real high.
2.5
This album is very hit or miss for me. In general, I like the ones that work more than I dislike the ones that don't, but ending on a very long, apparent Frampton tribute left a bad taste in my mouth. Best track: Be-in
The junkie song was enjoyable but I didn’t care about much else. 5/10
Lite långt men trevligt
This chugs and grooves along on a layered ocean of textures, with a smattering of catchy hooks throughout. I listened to this whilst mowing the lawn, and it was a good accompaniment. I probably would have cut the final two tracks, which are nothing but 16 minutes of instrumental texture, but overall this did (just about) make feel wu-hoo wooooo. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth Date listened: 23/08/23
Nice rock music that just lacks that bit of a spark that will turn it into the truly brilliant
Interesting shoegaze
Enjoyed it more than I thought but on the whole still pretty forgettable
Decent - singles and trippy bits are good
I enjoyed this, it sounded good, but was a bit boring Maybe more listens would help pull out the subtlety and help me see more of what's interesting here
I fucking hated this band in the 90s. They were always being played on music clip shows instead of cool things like metal, lol. But let's see in 2023. Ok it's not all out hateable anymore. It's mildly annoying in that way that 90s alternative usually is, but it's not unique or awful. Just bland, monotonous, overlong and thinks it's artsy when it's not (see band name). But it could be far, far worse. 3/5.
335/1001 The Dandy Warhols - The Dandy Warhols Come Down Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❎ This felt like it lasted forever. There were just so many tracks that sounded exactly the same and when it's this stoner kind of aesthetic, it needs to be shorter. Probably should have cut my losses halfway through, but pushed through in the end...
This started out quite drab but there was a little run there near the middle but that jolt went as quickly as it came. Just kinda long and boring. 4/10
I find it hard to believe anyone is thrilled or interested by this in this day and age fairly tedious stuff for the most part 2.5*
This was an impressive combination of being way too long, all over the place, and somehow boring.
Did not age well
Pretty boring
fav song: orange hazy, textured, moody 40/100
A bit of a slog. Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth and Everyday Should be a Holiday are great tracks - but rest of the album is a real disappointment. Lots of fairly bland instrumentals / jams and forgettable album fillers. Disappointing.
Kinda stopped paying attention half way through which says it all I guess
This started out as a three - generic 90s Indie - then all the instrumental bollocks and repetitive dirges brought it down. I remember the name of the band from back then, and at least one of their songs which doesn't feature here. It's another album which seemingly has zero reason for being included on this list - didn't sell, had no hits, wasn't acclaimed, isn't influential. A bit bemused by all the 5 star reviews here. I can only assume Americans really like shitty Britpop when made by their fellow Countrymen.
Starts off pretty good, like some sort of Shoegaze band. That’s about as good as it gets though. The rest of the album either sounds like somewhat pleasant but drawn out Shoegaze or the “Come down” boredom the calmer songs on here bring. The last 2 songs are more of a sanity test than they are actual pieces of music and really make me consider giving this a bottom rating. The rest of the album is ok while some stuff is awful.
Not that great. A big minus is „not if you were the last junkie on earth“. What a shitty song.
Meh
This is one of those albums that gives you a constant feeling of deja-vu. It's just completely uninspired, a plodding, overlong collage of tired neo-psychedelia tropes of the '90s, downright stereotypical. A couple of tracks do manage to break this suffocating mould, but they are few and far-between. 2/5
Boring british mediocre rock
Quite a sombre experience; not necessarily because this album is depressiong (though, imo, it is) but because of the realisation that I might not have as broad a music taste as I thought I had. I think it might be the shoe-gazing, the raw instrumentation and mumbled vocals buried below layer upon layer of reverb fighting against years of cleaner-but-mass-produced music that I swam around in during my formative years. Regardless, on the whole, I wasn't a fan of this. It has an interesting... "sonic texture"... but not one that I want to chew on again.
33/1089 ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down by The Dandy Warhols I think this challenge is great, but sometimes it also makes me realise that some albums just need more time. It doesn’t happen very often that I instantly love an album on first listen. A lot of my favourite records took a few listens before they fully clicked. And honestly, I think this might be one of those albums. On first listen I got a bit bored and didn’t really connect with many of the songs. The album mostly just passed by me without leaving much impact. But at the same time, I can hear sounds and ideas here that feel like they should work for me. So even though I found it underwhelming overall, there’s definitely something interesting going on underneath the surface. I just don’t think I fully got there yet. Wine pairing? Some overly trendy natural wine that everyone says is amazing but you’re not fully convinced by yet. Food pairing? Cold pizza at 1am. Favourite song? Honestly, nothing really stood out enough yet. Vinyl? Don’t want it. First listen? Yes. Overall 2 out of 5.
Not that great or memorable. One point deduction for cloying band name. There are one or two decent tunes that keep it from a 1. The list is starting to piss me off.
Ah, the infamous Wall of Noise.
Alright but came across as self important and a little toxic
Why is this album so looooooong
I really like not if you were the last junkie so I was excited for this album but it was just so disappointing. Every day should be a holiday was pretty good though.
Post-punk pop vibes. Not bad, not great.
This album got nothing interesting, is really bland and is overly long. The music itself is uninspired and cliche. Atleast its not complete butt ? Extremely random pick honestly. 2.5/5 but ill give it a 2 because it wasted an hour of my life I could have spent doing something more interesting. Like doing cookies. Yeah I should bake some cookies.
Meh
Started out ok but dragged on. The last 20 minutes of the album were boring and started to get downright annoying, not because of weird sounds or anything, it just grated on and on. 2/5
I don't really get the appeal but I don't dislike it either
Ain’t no Brian Jonestown Massacre
no me mató, zzz no lo volvería a escuchar
They forgot to put the banger from Flushed Away on this album. For shame. Also if they chopped this album at 45 mins maybe I would have passed it. The final 20 mins were a true slog.
Not bad, but nothing really notable. Listened to more of it on 3/27 and Ryan doesn't like it.
Boring 2/5
3/21 Boring album
Jotenkin todella PERUSmusaa, siitä kostoksi kagone
On tässä ihan jotain ideaa, mutta ei osu silti itselle.
Bit boring
totally snooze inducing. not my jam at all
The only Dandy Warhols song I previously knew was the opening theme from Veronica Mars. They recorded part of this album in the lead singer's apartment...bet his neighbors loved that. Had to misophonia skip the one with heavy breathing. NOPE. Aside from that and the one about heroin, this was forgettable.
Not quite my style.
non il mio genere, però interessante la sperimentazione. Tracce preferita: Whipping Tree, Pete International Airport
Parts good, parts too long and whiny. I do feel like I'm leaning on the negative side of this tho. Good Morning was my fav song of the album and fav first listen with Boys Better and Minnesoter being my other highlights
Meh 2.5/5
It was fine, 2 stars. Some good songs but too long, drawn out
Ok music terrible lyrics
So incredibly boring. These sound like sketches of songs because half of them go nowhere past their initial hook. Bohemian Like You is a banger of a song but nothing on this comes close.
Not my style
I have heard and enjoyed a few of their songs before. First few songs are ok. They sound very REM. Then you get to "I love you" which is dreary. Every day should be a Holiday is decent. Minnesoter is my other pick. Album is ok but needs about five songs cut.
desinspirats
Just sounds like a bunch of other crap from this era.
sssnzzzzz
Not bad, but too long and felt lacking in ideas. Some inspired moments though, like the opener/closer.
Dandy Warhols started positively for me and some bits are very cool and kind of interesting, however it’s long and a lot of it is a bit bland and boring to my ears, so a high 2
inoffensive to the point of being uninteresting. not a bad sound, but very few remarkable moments. it certainly captures a moment of the late 90’s, but it could’ve been 20 minutes shorter.
Meh. I could have certainly gone my whole life not having listened to this album.
Not as bad as I thought but I can't stand that man.
Lang, anstrengend und langweilig. Habe auf das Ende gewartet.
I've never really listened to them, except for that one that's always on the flippin' radio. Going in... , listened to most of it, couldn't;t quite stick it out till the end, it started to get on my nerves.
Not a huge fan of this. It all ends up sounding kind of the same and drags on too long, not surprising that my favourite tracks ended up being some of the higher energy ones. Might have given three stars if it was about 20 minutes shorter. Favourite tracks: Be-in, Cool as Kim Deal
No thanks. 2
Daddy Warbucks, Andy Warhol - right from the start I wondered what this band was playing at and thought their choice of moniker cast doubt on the proceedings - it was all downhill from there.
5.8
Well produced but not super memorable. I think I would nominate other Brit pop over this.
