Reviews (page 3 of 7)

Does its job: relaxing and quite cheery indie rock with a helpful touch of melancholy

I wasn't really expecting much from 'D', the fourth album from Texas outfit White Denim, as it seemed like a really obscure and puzzling addition to this list. But wow, what a hidden gem of a record this is! Equal parts Neil Young, Led Zeppelin and CCR, while also showing plenty of appreciation towards the jam bands of the late 60s/early 70s, 'D' is such a pleasure explosion of classic rock, folk, psychedelia and garage rock. The instrumental section of 'Back at the Farm' is absolutely enthralling, and the melodies of 'Street Joy' and 'Anvil Everything' soar high above the mix. You also have 'River to Consider', which sounds like a B-side from Paul Simon's 'Graceland' record with a different vocalist. Also of note is the impressive guitar work of James Petralli and Austin Jenkins and the sensational feel of drummer Joshua Block in crafting so unique shuffle beats. The musicianship is top notch, and its clear the band work off each other seamlessly. White Demin has been a very good find, and there's no doubting their inclusion on this list, and their supreme skill and cohesion as a unit. Best songs: Back at the Farm, Street Joy, Anvil Everything 4/5

The more I listened the more I liked it.

Pretty good record. Not sure what I was expecting, but I was genuinely impressed by the songs and the musicianship, will definitely be listening to this again and checking out o the White Denim albums.

Pretty decent album I knew nothing about before listening.

Fun pops psychedelic rock. Some interesting influences from a few genres. Great guitar work, light vocals and skilled drumming.

Pretty cool. I'm down with this. A lot of variety in the writing. Sometimes I hear ELP/Yes kinda vibes and other times CSNY. Loved it!

First time listen 🎶 & quite enjoyable

A pretty good album, I liked It's Him, Back At The Farm, Street Joy and Keys the most.

Never heard of these guys, but this was a pleasant surprise. They remind me a tiny bit of American Football and This Town Needs Guns. Favourite tracks: Burnished, Back at the Farm, Street Joy, Drug.

Never heard of them, really liked this album. I heard some Grateful Dead, all man bros, lots of bluesy rockin

Better than expected

So I knew a track from Rocksmith (Burnished, track #2 is in the first one), but this band was one of the acts that slipped through and what an album it is, it gives you twists and turns everywhere you look at, some tracks outros become full fledged instrumentals freak outs and while it doesn't have a memorable single song it's variety in sound palette makes up for it.

Really enjoyed this. Had no idea what to expect going in, and it turned out to be really up my alley.

Surprisingly groovy and these folks talented!

cool. rocky. almost jam band.

That was a nice surprise! I can't remember ever hearing this band before, but they're really great. Their music is suitable for both relaxed listening and close listening, when you concentrate on every nuance of their playing. I have no idea what to call this kind of music, but I like it! I would say it's pop rock, but with a world music approach, jazz influences, and an extremely tight and groovy rhythm section. The only thing I'm missing is something really catchy. Approved!

This was a new discovery for me and I liked it very much. Very interesting arrangements and jamming, even some flute solos. It was much more melodic and concise than a lot of jam bands and the songs never overstayed their welcome. These songs are full of intricately woven guitar interplay and dense wordplay. There are no comparable bands that I can think of, they are truly original indie rock. Am looking forward to checking out more of their stuff.

Not sure how I've completely missed these guys, I'm always on board for some good neopsych stuff. They sound like a lot of other bands I really enjoy that started in the same era, King Gizzard and The Districts just to name a couple, but also sound like entirely their own thing. Love the diversity of the tracks, the unusual rhythms and song structures, the noodly guitars. All very cool, want to check out more of the discography.

Fav: Street Joy

I didn't want to like this album because the album art looks like one of those pictures that makes you feel like you're having a stroke. But I enjoyed this. It's interesting and seems like the White Denim guys were doing something different here and dropped a real gem that seems relatively unknown and underappreciated in the mainstream.

Overall really enjoyed this one. Feel like this could be a sleeper 5* for me. I found myself coming back to it and giving it multiple listens. Definitely a lot to explore with this one because it's textured and pulling from may genres. I don't really have a ton of experience with jam bands but this is a bit what I imagine them to sound like. Not completely, but it's got the "feeling" I imagine.

I wanted to be annoyed with this when I first opened it because I'm starting to become frustrated with the choices of 21st century albums in this list, this was my era and so far we've had mostly left field stuff rather than what I would consider the bigger more culturally defining moments, many of which I think have been omitted. That said, I came to this list to broaden my horizons, and you know what, this was a surprisingly really good time! Pyschadelic, long instrumentals that kept me hooked, different and sure of itself. An education.

Pretty good stuff

These guitar players are fire🔥

Cool! Back in 2011, I was 10, and that's the kind of thing that I wanted to hear more on the radio back then. We ain't talk about any masterpiece in here, but it sure has an excellent rock n' roll vibe. Loved it.

When I generate something I've never heard of before, I try to go in as blind as possible; no Wikipedia, no scrolling down on Spotify to see what 'fans also liked'. Add it to the daily playlist and hit play. And this was a really pleasant surprise. I had noticed it was a 2011 release but it would fit right in with late 60s-early 70s psych, from the cover art to the flange-fuzzy melodic guitar tone, straightforward-but-effective production, long jammy instrumentals and surreal lyrics. Tracks run into each other and the structures keep you guessing. We're treated to some jazzy flute solos alongside summery, virtuoso guitar lines and a stomping rhythm and bass section. I have been looking forward to repeat listens and kept this on rotation for a number of days. I'm not sure why I hadn't heard of White Denim until today but I'm really glad I know about them now.

First album I’ve received that was released post 2000 and it was by far the best so far. Had very strong Beatles vibes - would definitely listen again.

Good rock album

Really liked this one. The instrumental parts are awesome, i love how they included instruments like the flute for example. The guitar solos could have been a bit longer sometimes, but overall great album.

Interesting, and different

I’m pretty sure I caught White Denim live once, and (if I’m remembering correctly) their set wasn’t nearly as tight as what I’m hearing on D. But that was years ago, and bands evolve. Reading up on them, it sounds like this album marked a turning point - where they found their footing again and rediscovered that spark. You can hear it. The playing is sharp, the grooves are unpredictable but never messy, and there’s this sense of momentum throughout. It feels like a band locked in, pushing each other creatively, and just having fun being good at what they do.

I'd somehow never heard of this band, but this was pretty good! Not my favorite, but is a quality edition to the indie rock canon.

I love when an album on this thing surprises me! This was a banger, I didn’t have the immediate urge to skip any songs and it was concise which I love. Street Joy is by far the best song on the project and will be put in a playlist in the near future.

Len Houmous wore a White Denim Romper for his 23rd marriage. It was a hot day and a big mistake! 4.2 4/10 Street Joy

I like these hipsters

Pretty good modern rock album.

appena finito di ascoltarlo e già voglio risentirlo

For the most part I really enjoyed this one. I thought the instrumental interludes went on a bit too long in some of these songs, making the album seem longer than it was. This one is between a 3 and a 4 for me…I will round up.

Color me impressed. Never heard of them, but they delivered. That drummer is a mad man with all that asyncopation and fills. Was nervous it'd be a hipster band, but they made an awesome album

I was a little worried when I saw 2011 since so many of the albums I’ve been getting from that era have been aggressively average, but this was actually pretty good. It’s like some weird love child of Paul Simon and Animal Collective. I dig. 4/5 Highlights: Back at the Farm Anvil Everything

If I had found White Denim through this album instead of Fits I’d probably like them a lot more. This is fun garagey prog rock. Fits was that but weird and unlistenable in a lot of places. I liked this one a lot more

Damn this was good!!!!

Really enjoying this record. Reminds me of Yes in a few sections, but with the scratchiness of the south. Really neat sound.

Psychedelic always scares me, but this was pretty unique and varied and the vocals were not off-putting in the way they usually are for this genre. Actually quite enjoyable.

Good album Very much of its time with an early 2010’s sound.

I vibe with this. Some songs have very high replay value.

2011. Back at the Farm, Street Joy

4.5 - fantastic album from a band I’ve never heard of before

Really enjoyed this one. There are some super awesome tracks on this one that hit that psychedelic rock just right and I was in the right mood to hear it.

I was familiar with White Denim, having listened to their first couple of albums, quite enjoyed them but promptly forgotten about them. Nothing in those first couple of albums suggested they would be capable of producing an album as complex and rich as this one. Sounds like I've been missing out by not keeping up with them.

While I’d heard of White Denim, this was my first time listening to the band, and boy what a debut album this is. I’m surprised I missed it over the years to be honest, it’s right up my alley in many ways. Great guitar work highlights the album, heavily rhythmic and complex guitar duets are the highlights of a few songs, particularly Back At The Farm and Street Joy. The latter of these two may borrow HEAVILY from Breathe from DSOTM, but it’s probably the highlight for me. I listened to this like 4 times and considered giving it 5 stars, not much to fault here other than I may need more time with it to reach classic status.

really good. new discovery

Very cool kind of ambient album that I have never heard before. It's pretty chilled out kind of trippy songs. Easy to listen to, catchy with nice beats. Some interesting musical choices make it unlike other music I have heard. I think it's a little strange that I have never heard of a band that I like this much.

I've heard a little White Denim before, but it's been a while. This album was a lot of fun--I'd compare it to an Unknown Mortal Orchestra record--jammy, but not too noodly or long-winded. I'll definitely dig into the rest of their library and look for their records in the bins.

This album is like King Giz’s whole discography condensed into one. White Denim walked so Giz could SPRINT.

Really liked the sound of this group. Definitely fits in the garage band revival era of early 2000s however has more hints of psychedelic sounds of the 60s. Will explore more.

Found another gem, thanks 1001! Very high 4* 4/5

This was a nice easy start to a Monday. It was pretty and a little unique. The sounds were familiar but mixed with different instruments and unique pairings. We did simple folk up to rocking out. It was a little full and felt like there were a lot of ideas (the album cover is a perfect metaphor), sort of like a seek and find, trying to find all the pieces or details. All of the pieces were good and really built upon each other (like a fancy seven course dinner), there were just a lot. Definitely interested more in this band.

Great. Sounds retro without actually being retro. Singing could have been better, but it's fine. Favorite song: Burnished

never heard of White Denim before but man I wish I had. Just cool funky rock, doesnt try to be obnoxious or more than what it needs to be. Great instrumentals, the vocals do wear a bit thin here and there, but I'm not going to argue with a band that throws in a jazz flute when they can, such a nice variety of tone throughout.

White Denim are just great and what a pleasant surprise to see them on this list! This isn’t my favorite album of theirs but it rocks and it’s funky and it’s a great indicator as to where the band would be heading. Good job list!

I enjoyed this quite a bit. Not every song is a hit but most of them are good and the instrumentals are really solid.

I'm curious if this was one of the voted in albums. Pretty sweet, very unique, pretty chill. I'm going to revisit this on the weekend

Unexpected W. From the album art I really expected this to be a 70s rock album. Prog/ Psych rock, and cool as hell. You can hear Black Keys influences in the vocal performances, as well as some Radiohead, and maybe a touch of Jack White. Interesting chord progressions and a variety of instruments throughout. Super cool. Very strong 4. I will definitely re-listen.

Pretty good actually

A truly well-produced album where you can tell that every detail has been carefully considered. The instrumental side is both tight and creative, and everything comes together beautifully without feeling overly polished. The lyrics are thoughtful and carry depth without becoming too insistent. D is the kind of album that doesn’t necessarily grab you on the first listen, but grows on you with each spin. I can easily see myself coming back to it again and again. It has that rare quality where you keep discovering new layers and nuances along the way. 4/5

First listen had me thinking it was ok, but after giving it a second try it started to blow my mind. Great instrumentation and the segues between songs really helped

Really interesting album with a lot of subtle complexity going on. Never would've thought indie and prog would blend together as well as they do, but they make for a really enjoyable experience. Nothing too intense, and a nice easy listen despite the more complex song structures. Top tracks: Back at the Farm, Street Joy, River to Consider

Intriguing. Was going to say 3 because I’d I wanted to listen to Grateful Dead/Byrds/Jethro Tull mash ups I’d listen to Grateful Dead/Byrds/Jethro Tull, then decided I was sufficiently intrigued to round up to 4 so I’ll come back to it.

Back at the Farm // Street Joy // Is and Is and Is // 3.5/5

Good album. Nice rock

Never heard of White Denim, but this album was pretty fantastic. It sounded how I imagine bands like Phish and The Grateful Dead sound to their fans, but I found it way more interesting than either of those bands. 4.4/5

Honestly really surprised by this one. I'd never heard of it, and it's really good. It reminds me of much of what I like about King Gizzard, but this is prior to their first release. The rhythm section is super tight and the guitar parts play off each other just right. Loved it. 4.25/5

I really like this although this sound doesn't stand out too much. Sounds just like American royalty. In any case, complex and pleasant

Pleasently surprised by this album. Enjoyable level of rock and groove.

This checked a lot of boxes for me.

Had never heard of this and had no idea what I would be getting into. It was good. Short but interesting. Would probably put on again

Richly textured and easily digestible. I love the prog/blues combination, and need to listen to the rest of their discography. Standout track is: “Back at the Farm”.

I was surprised by this group - not sure how I missed hearing about them until today. Really enjoyed the album. Will have to revisit this soon.

I’m into it!

Mye bra, litt Gizzard. Blir litt for mye Indie for min del. Havner midt mellom 3/4, men i øvre siktet :)

very cool

This was a hidden gem

This is great. They bring together a lot of sounds meld them well, it doesn't feel slapdash or poorly put together River to Consider kind of reminded me of King Gizzard a little bit; psychedelic, a little bit proggy, flute (in fact there are other moments that sound like them too, like the midsection of Burnished and Bess St.). Is And Is And Is has a kind of classic rock sound, and there's an acoustic country twang in the guitars on Keys The instrumentation is tight, and songs often take unexpected turns that keep my interest, like that last third of Bess St., where it goes from rowdy psych rock to technical and winding Thank goodness this is 37 minutes, it went by quickly and I actually wanted more when it was finished. That goes a long way for me A great listen Highlights: River To Consider, Bess St., Is And Is And Is

Just a nice solid, quick album.

Never heard of this group but I'll check out more.

So far I’m loving the crazy aspects of it. I feel like I’m falling and being swept up again. The track back at the farm is sticking out to me in that respect. I feel like I cannot be disappointed. It just keeps building on itself and getting better. Street joy is also a kind of melancholic yearning song that had a powerful pull to it. I’m intrigued by the slapping quick beat in the track anvil everything This album is deeply connected, but still has great variety. There is an aloofness to the song drug that I like. The repetitive riffs with the smashing cymbals rly brings out the creative baseline. A nice head bobber. Nice hook on Bess St. Whooo sick breakdown too. Wow, track is what it is builds in such a satisfying way. The chorus feels like a rewarding breakdown from the whispered build up in the earlier verse. Cute Johnny cash bop in that last track. Charming way to end the album. “What started out is my head, ended up in my fingers.” That’s beautiful.

Completely went into this blind - had never heard of the artist, didn't read the description, nothin. First thought is what the heck this is cool. Kinda psychadelic, suuuper outside my wheelhouse. "Back at the Farm" almost feels like the drumming and bass playing wouldn't have been out of place on a Sabbath record. Lots of cool noodly solos. Overall super positive on this one.

Pretty good. Should I see them in July? Playing the Armory

I do find his version of shuffle rock interesting and have heard him live. The songs are so dense and complex it can be hard to grab hold of them even as you admire them. I like how he cuts his own sonic path.

Hard to tell what era this was from. It's got a sort of neo 60s psych pop sound. Great rhythm tracks, and a bit of variety. I liked it, would return

Really good classic rock vibes

Liked it. Hard to describe but the music was garage bandy but not annoying like I sometimes find it.

# Album Name: D # Artist: White Denim # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Low 4. Not a bad jam session. Band is talented. Just above average. Good. But not very good. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? Maybe

I had never heard of these guys. I really liked the front half of this album but the back half was weak I thought. Plus points since they’re from Texas. Almost a 4.

So. I listened to this a month ago. Forgot about it. Had to revisit. Definitely worth a second listen! This will go in my regular rotation.

To roughly enjoyed this album.

Really enjoyed this one. Is and Is and Is was the standout. It's a good mixture of a few different things. Between a high 3 and a 4

I don't love all psych flourishes here, but this is an obviously restlessly creative band, and it's an entertaining record- if you don't like one song, wait a minute things are about to change. Lots of looping sounds here, kind of minimalist in parts- but mostly a pretty solid rock 'n roll album.

Some buets on here, wierd that koffi suggested this today as it was the same day Andy said he'd been to see them the night before in Liverpool. Stop listening into our convos koffi you prick. Mid 4.

This was an awesome find for me. Such a fun album. Several of these songs are going on playlists, and their other stuff is awesome too. Interesting name for an album though. They have another one called Stiff 🙄 Just why?

Garage rock meets indie rock meets prog rock.

This was a pleasant surprise. It sounded like a mash up of some good prog rock bands

Cool eclectic cosmic psych rock with bits of garage, jamband, prog and alt country mixed together. It's extremely busy throughout - they don't linger on an idea or a groove for long before the whirlwind carries them somewhere new. Bright and upbeat with a jangly fun feel overall. Would be good live you'd think. I'd never heard of them so it's a pleasant surprise, but since I was paying attention to this kind of music in the US at the time, it seems like a strange inclusion over bigger bands in the same era/genre that aren't on the 1001 like the jammy country rock of My Morning Jacket, a folksy crooner with a big emotive sound like Bon Iver, a way bigger jamband like Phish, or indie pop rock acts who had more mainstream crossover like the Shins. They weren't a huge hit or critical darlings (37 on NME's album of the year list, not on Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, AV club) - not say that's the standard, but just to say it wasn't getting a ton of attention at the time, so why does it stand out in retrospect? Would be interested to read the explanation, but I will just enjoy a bit of swirling whirling vaguely psych indie guitar rock in the meantime.

This is the first true surprise I've had on this list, an artist I had never heard of doing something squarely outside of my wheelhouse that I nonetheless thought absolutely ripped. This is a great record. I thought the proggy stuff worked best: At The Farm, Anvil Everything the biggest highlights. Closer to 3.5.

Hmm, interesting. Heard of these kicking around but never heard their stuff. Reminds me a little of Field Music in that the songs keep going in unexpected directions, but with a much more US garage sound and slightly Byrdsy, folksy vocals. Colour me intrigued. Having said that, Back at the Farm instrumental is fabulous. Street Joy loses me as it goes far more conventional. But it quickly picks back up again. Definitely up for listening to this again, perhaps a low four at this stage, definitely enjoyed.

This was pretty decent. I'll round up to a 4 because this was definitely pretty interesting relatively speaking. Might not entirely be my thing, but hey.

I feel like this was the chestburster moment when indie music stopped sucking and started sounding pretty good.

Terrific album. It flows so well, and it leaves you wanting more. Anvil Everything is the standout track.

Had high hopes after the first 3 tracks, but then it kind of lost me and then came River to Consider. I had just listened to Jethro Tull and was in no mood for more rock flute. It came to close with # songs I did like. I would give it 3.5 if I could so I'll round up given the trash I have had to endure including the aforementioned Jethro Tull.

Solid if unremarkable 2010's rock

Actually really enjoyed this, WD have been on my radar for a while but this is the first time I've bothered to spend the time with them!

Love White Denim! A solid album, although this is probably my least favourite album of theirs. Great to see them on this list and fingers crossed they have more albums on here! Favourite tracks: Back at the Farm, River to Consider & Is and Is and Is Already in regular rotation. 4/5

Loved it. Four (five?) accomplished musicians merging their influences and styles to really interesting effect - but always in service of whatever song their playing. Incredibly, it seems to be a rarity.

3.6 That was pretty good. Not my usual stuff but fairly pleasant. There was something slightly Thom Yorke'ish about his voice that I liked. Music fairly decent. Saved down a few tracks.

Never heard these guys before. They were pretty good. Not what I was expecting.

Got pretty good after a couple of plays through. Chill

Super fun! I have had a hard time getting entirely through other White Denim albums, but this one is more approachable top-to-bottom. It's Him! is amazing, these guys shred. I saved TWO songs to my spotify liked songs after saving only one song total (Gang Star) from any previous album. They just fucking rock, man. The drummer is a beast, and their music gets me super pumped up. Pumped up enough to spin brodies in my 2013 Ford Edge.

Ooh, this is the kind of psych rock I can get behind. This album rules. The polyrhythms are off the charts. Every track feels like a journey. The horns! The hook on Is and Is and Is goes so hard.

Just some fun, rootin’-tootin’ indie rock. I will definitely be coming back to this one. Side note - these guys need someone to help them get better album artwork. Are 12 of their albums are uggos!

How have I never heard of these guys? Sometimes they sound like My Morning Jacket, sometimes Allman Brothers, sometimes later period Black Keys. I’m not a jam rock fan at all but these jams don’t go on too long or get too noodly. Really cool interplay between instruments. Dual lead guitars rock, I wish more bands had the chops to pull that off (maybe that’s why I think of the Allmans). The drummer needs a special shoutout. Damn. The production is fantastic; even with a lot going on I can hear every instrument clearly, even the bass doesn’t get lost in the mix. And it’s a good thing, because every player here deserves to be heard. Sometimes it still gets a little far out for me, but in the right mood that’s not a problem. Docked some points for barely being able to decipher the lyrics most of the time.

3, 5, 6, 7

Sounds good!

This is one that I thoroughly enjoyed. They had a very fresh, live kind of sound to them. I've never heard of them before but I'll definitely be revisiting in future.

I really enjoyed this! A little psychedelic and talented musicians. Complex layered songs with impressive execution. Saved to my library.

Fuck yes White Denim. I love White Denim. They’re like if someone took a band from the 70’s to the 2010’s and they were like “ok I guess we’re just gonna do our thing now I guess.”

Mais c'est pas mal du tout cette petite douceur un peu rétro!

I like this! It's not got the hooks or catchy choruses that I love, but it's a great combination of jazzy & prog rock & guitars, without the pretentious feel. At 37 minutes, it gives you just how much you want without too much. A new band to me.

I stumbled onto White Denim a few years ago looking for modern stuff that was of a psychedelic bent. Most of what I was finding was pretty meh, but when I put this record on (and, soon after, another record of theirs, "Side Effects"), I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.... this song is COOL... probably the rest of the record blows, right? and the rest of the record DIDN'T blow. In fact, it was one of the best new albums I'd heard in a long time... elements of prog, psych, math rock, stoner rock, classic rock, Beatlesque bits... elaborate but focused. Tight but expansive. The "jam band" moniker some are using here doesn't fit. Do you know what a "jam band" is? One that thinks an 11-minute version of "Stella Blue" is a good idea. One that lets the guitarist noodle endlessly without purpose. THESE songs, however, are all around 3 or 4 minutes, and are COMPOSED. God forbid anyone dismissing this as patchouli-scented hackey-sack "Jam" music ever hears, say, King Crimson or early '70s Genesis. Anyway: there SHOULD be a penalty for use of flute in rock music (the 7/8-time-Santana-esque latin of "River to Consider"). When people say rock music is dead they don't realize people like White Denim are out there making it in the 21st century. I think that most rock bands just DGAF about writing hit singles so the charts ignore them. As long as the fans don't, we're all good here.

this was another album that surprised me with how much I liked it! I had never heard of this band before, but I found a lot to love here and I'll definitely be diving into more of their discography at some point. it is interesting that critics seem to consider them more psychedelic/prog rock though...i do hear the psychedelia on some songs (mostly "River to Consider) but honestly I hear more country and folk influences...but maybe that's just because they're from Texas lol. all and all though, i'm really glad i discovered this band and this album!

I had fun with this

That was great

A new discovery for me, and like other users, I find it hard to compare their sound to anything I've heard before. An intriguing blend of indie, garage, blues and rock. Standout track: Street Joy

I did not know the band and it's a nice surprise. Modern pyschedelia with a hint of rock, jazz, pop... Well balanced, not too long, that was pleasant.

- Good but not quite great. I found myself wishing the mix did not bury the lyrics as much as it does, almost like there was not as much confidence in the singing as there was in the playing. Quite enjoyable, another good discovery (as many others have noted). -

What a surprise of a gem.

Only familiar with one WD album and this isnt it. Another band I heard a bit by and thought ‘this is class!’ then never checked out more. This is ace though, they’ve managed to merge blues / indie / funk / rock’n’roll / prog into something that sound much better than it should. It’s like a mix of 1001 records in one album. Only familiar with two songs off this (Street Joy and Anvil Everything) which are great, and the rest stands up well with them too. Very good, will be back and will be revisiting the record I used to love (the one with the lass with loads of cacti down her pants)

Never heard of these and it was pretty decent. Will probably come back and give it another go. Think at least 3.5 but I'll go 4

Hot dang! I expected to dislike this but it's actually really good. Slow dreamy rocky folky, poppy and a load of other sounds.

This one was great. I loved the creativity and wackiness of the tracks here. I'll accept that this is the closest I'll come to a King Gizzard album on this list.

A album I was unfamiliar with from a band I had not heard of. Very reminiscent of that jam band type sound. I love this shit. Can’t believe I hadn’t heard it before. Definitely something I will come back to. Favorites were It’s Him!, Back At The Farm, Street Joy, River To Consider, and Is And Is And Is.

I wasn't sure what to make of this as stylistically it seemed all over the map, but I kept finding myself engaged with the material. It was reminiscent of the Byrds and Moby Grape but they also had their own thing going on. I didn't focus on the lyrics, so they might have been crap, but musically, it was adventurous and fun and the songs had strong melodies. Very cool and I'd never even heard of this before, so well done, list!

Man this is a party I loved attending!

Interesting. Felt a little jam band but never got repetitive. Will have to check out more of their catalog

This was another band I'd never heard of, and I was wary going into it based on some of the other stuff that's cropped up on this list. I was pleasantly surprised. They're like a higher energy, proggier version of Dispatch (it might be more accurate to compare them to State Radio), two of the few bands my brother and I could agree on when he was going through his otherwise terrible techno phase in high school and college. The musicianship on this album is top notch; the drummer does a lot of interesting things, and there are plenty of great guitar riffs and solos. The incorporation of strings and flute (River to Consider) works really well, even though it could have turned out cheesy and weird. The vocalist has a good voice and the lyrics are interesting — often political in a slightly abstract way. Highlights: Burnished, Back at the Farm, Anvil Everything, Drug, Bess St. Wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. It's not quite a 5, but it's a strong 4.5, and I'll probably check out more of their catalogue. 4.5/5

Thoughts before listening: I'm pretty surprised to see these guys on this list. I really enjoyed them back in the day and even saw them once in San Francisco. Indie rock meets jamband music has always been my take on them....which means it was right up my alley in my 20s and early 30s. Review: I love it. This combo of indie rock style with some jamband elements mixed in is just a sound I will always gravitate to. White Denim may not be a band who really deserve to be on this list of 1,001 albums, but I still really enjoy this album. Perhaps if I didn't have a nostalgic attachment to these guys I wouldn't give it such a high rating (i.e. the myriad Brit pop bands thrusted on me as part of this project), but I feel good about giving them 4-stars for my personal preferences.

Nyt oli kova uusi tuttavuus! Sopivan popahtava, sovituksellisesti mielenkiintoinen ja hauska levy. Myös täydellisen mittainen, ei ehdi lainkaan kulua puhki. 4/5

A properly interesting, inventive, tuneful piece of work. I ended up listening to it a few times and will definitely do so again.

I've deleted more words than I've saved in writing about White Denim here. This record smartly keeps the songs moving — all 10 of them clocking in at ~ 37 minutes of mostly uptempo, blended-genre music. A qualified 4 stars where the commentary is now missing. It's elusive, just like my feelings about this record.

Indie rock but with a greater emphasis on guitar and drums. Not sure it is objectively "great" but I enjoyed listening to it

Kind of a banger

White Denim has something for everyone...jam band noodling packaged into a pop song shell with top notch musicianship and interesting instrumentation.

Caught me by surprise - I found this album endlessly fascinating. Nothing like what I usually listen to. Proggy but not overblown.

you'd expect something really boring or run-of-the-mill from a garage rock band with the name "White Denim", but there's a lot more melodic complexity and engagement here than i was expecting to get. the noodly guitar lines reminded me of Surface to Air Missive at points, taking the songs weird but catchy places. other than the indulgent jam "River to Consider", this thing blows by fast, each song a dandelion seed pushed by a breath.

good jams

I feel like I should have known this album from back in the day but I don't... maybe I did waste my youth

Over all this is super unique and completely just a vibe from a band I've never heard of. I really appreciate this music Back at the Farm is fucking wild Sweet Joy Anvil Everything Is and Is and Is !!!!!!!

Love it.

Great and cool, chill tunes to really vibe to. I think I heard these songs in the wrong season, because they give me summer vibes in the middle of an autumn storm. Yet they make me feel the warmer side of life. Their weird mystic lyrics, combined with their upbeat tune and interesting, layered musical tone makes this a really worthwhile listen.

Fav: Street Joy Least Fav: River To Consider Perfectly fine album, but just feels like it’s missing something that would make it a 5. Not sure about this album so I’ll keep it at a 4. So far 2010s has had no bad albums, so I’m hoping it stays that way

Rly good vives to it. Starts a bit punkish but quickly changes pace and goes into somewhat more art rock style. I enjoy it

I dig this. Feels like the lead singer sort of emulates Jeff Buckley's ghost but the instrumentation is a lot more of an indie proggy/mathy jam band in the vein of Ponytail or Local Natives. Definitely a cool listen.

They surprised me

What a discovery! I've never heard of them. This album is so easy to listen to, I think I've played it 4 or 5 times already. I was consistently pleasantly surprised by the little twists and turns on each song and how they all weave together so seamlessly. Like, I wasn't expecting the flute to make the appearance it did, but it just works so well. I will definitely be adding this to the rotation.

This reminded me of a couple of others bands, but I can't quite put my finger on who! Regardless, I liked it a lot and actually listened twice. Kind of prog at times but also indy and fun.

Gear: Aür Audio Aurora Artwork: 👨🏻‍🎨🎨🤯 Mix: 😲🙂👌 Musik: 🥁🎸🤩 Wertung: 👖👖👖👖/5

I really like this. Some songs feel like a jam band mixed with Tom Petty. Definitely music that's nice in the background and makes you absentmindedly start tapping your foot or bobbing your head. As I listened, one artist I found myself thinking of on more than one track was Beck. This is like a more folksy, less electronic version of Beck.

Some bands sound like they were doing drugs in the studio. White Denim sound highly caffeinated. They have a boisterous energy and a style that ranges from blues rock to jam band with some other influences scattered throughout. One song has West African rhythms and others have dense sections that sound kind of proggy. The lead singer sounds like Dan Auerbach. He’s right in that sweet spot — soulful enough to carry the prettier melodies but with enough grit to sound like a rock singer.

Great album for road trips!

Wow, what a great surprise! Have never heard of this band and I don't know why. This is just good rock and roll that leans slightly to power pop but with great instrumental breaks. Lots of really good guitar parts blending together. Can't tell if the vocals are harmonies or overdubs but it doesn't really matter because they work well. Downloading this one!

In their jam band bag that also contains the necessary psychedelic materials, White Denim offer us the big D and they largely succeeded in the nearly forty minute runtime. Not a bad album to bump if you want to bop your head to some grooves. Favorites: It's Him!, At the Farm, Anvil Everything, River to Consider, Bess St., Is and Is and Is.

didn't like the first song, but pretty cool overall

Rock progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Favourite Song: Street Joy

Has a real 70s rock vibe about this. Really enjoyed this record it flows really well. Musicianship is amazing soild vocals all round good album. Will check out their other records. Stand out tracks: - It's him! - Burnished - Sweet joy - Drug - Keys

Some hippy music. Not bad though. Like prog, psychedelic, and pop mixed up in an acid laden vat. 4/5

Absolute unexpected. Had no idea who the people were. But very good out. Especially love the drummer

This was a cool little record. It was in and out and there weren't any low points. I may listen to more of this group.

Kinda flew by, but it was impressively diverse and well produced!

Loving this groove pastiche

I liked this album. The songs were interesting and light, yet strong. A very short album, too.

No es la obra maestra que muchos parecen haber encontrado, pero está muy bien de todas formas.

Wow what a find! Really enjoyed this album!! A nice indie sound to it - I'd have loved this as a teenager! Which is a shame as this album came out in my peak indie stage of life A very high 4 ⭐️

Loved this! Tempted to give it a 5. So intricate and interesting and packed a lot into a short run. That last track was a little twangy for my taste, so I'll give it a strong 4.5

I really liked this album. The guitar was awesome and it had a pretty unique sound.

loved the gvf jefferson airplane vibes

This was a pleasant surprise for me. Normally it takes me a couple of listens to truly appreciate and enjoy albums, but this one make a great first impression to me. I’ll be listening to it again.

So crisp. Everything is together throughout. They’re so tight.

Surprised with this great band a fussion of a lot generes mixed extremly well. I will add to my playlist and listen to their other albums. Im sure they will be really good.

Really good

This is one of the rare acts on this list I had never heard *of* before, and it's a very pleasant surprise. Buying the album right away. *D* goes to MANY places, mostly psych-rock, but with winks towards a vast array of other genres (garage, classic rock, prog-rock, along with tiny-yet-pivotal nuggets of funk, krautrock, blues-rock and soul). But in spite of this catalogue of styles, White Denim manage to maintain cohesiveness from the first second to the last. And they sprinkle catchy hooks everywhere. One of them will remind you of a Motown artist while another recalls Radiohead circa-*In Rainbows*, when the Oxfordians were channelling a lot of CAN influences into their music. Not to mention all the other influences (one reviewer said 'Osees-lite', and I have to concur). So this is quite as impressive feat here. As is the musicianship through and through--expecially that virtuosistic drummer! As many other reviewers pointed out, White Denim sounds like a "jam band" on *D*, and yet they're never self-indulgent or boring. I still haven't indentified clear standout or killer tracks in my initial listen, but I have no doubt that if I focus again on this record, they will quickly come up and please my ears. A true banger should stand out right away, normally, which is where this very good record might fall short to get into my own list if ever are too many last-minute LPs to include. But it's hard to blame White Denim for this, given how insanely ambitious and original their music is. Writing bangers is not the only way to write great albums anyway. I've had the time to browse through the other LPs of this band hailing from Austin, TX, though. And as of now, it seems to me that their earlier releases are less impressive, with a more lo-fi sound that--in this case--doesn't fully match with the music that's played. And the later LPs apparently weigh heavier on African-American inspirations, but in a fashion that sounds a wee bit more streamlined and less sonically adventurous overall. So, to me, *D* looks like a perfect middle-ground and ideal entry point into the band's *oeuvre*. And White Denim records will stay on my radar no matter what. Pretty sure that if I'm not yet fully sold on the other recordings they made so far, there must at least be a couple of gems in each of those other albums. So thank you Robert Dimery, and thanks to the creator of this app. This is exactly what I signed for when I started this project. 3.5/5 for the purposes of this list of "essential albums", rounded up to 4. 8.5/10 for more general purposes. Number of albums left to review: 146 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 367 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 217 (including this one) Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 274

A good, fun and varied rock album. Nothing really new on here and not an amazing amount of depth either. Just a good mash-up combining elements from different styles of rock. Nice to listen to, but won't really remember it.

Don't think I had heard of them, but I enjoyed it.

Positiv overraskelse! Aldrig hørt om dem før. Sangeren behøvede ikke lyde så meget som ham fra the Shins, men udover det nød jeg den virkelig

Favorite album so far from a band I hadn’t heard of previously. Felt like a road trip, I just wanted to throw it on and head a direction. Such a mix of styles while keeping a consistent through line. This album will definitely go in my personal rotation and I look forward to their other albums.

挺有趣的

Another pleasant surprise from this app - weird at times but in a way that I find enjoyable. Great energy and tone, overall really good.

It's always fun to have an album that I have never heard of before. Never even heard of this band before. I must confess that when this popped up and I saw a band called White Denim and that they were from Texas I immediately thought I was in for a shitty country pop album. But what I got was a super fun bluesy/psychedelic/indie/pop rock record that even has some forays into acid jazz. Really cool guitar parts throughout. Great vocals. Good song structures. Terrible album cover. I'll have to listen another time or two but on the first listen this was a great album. Overall I really liked this record and will definitely be listening to some of their other stuff. I'm giving this one a solid 3.75/5.

Loved it really cool modern psych. Never heard of them. Lot of jazz influence too

really enjoyed this, never heard of this group before. will have to dive into their catalogue more.

This seemed like an album that people mostly wouldn’t like on this site, like a lot of albums that were added later on, but everyone likes it. I agree with this opinion - it’s just some good rock. By the way, this band is from my home state, Texas, and it got me thinking how people just tend to sum it up to cowboys and stuff (not the worst stereotype about the state, but whatever). I was at a local Italian place the other day, and this guy with a guitar and a cowboy hat showed up, said this was his second show in Texas, and started playing the karaoke versions of songs on an iPad, singing, and barely playing the guitar. It wasn’t very good. But yeah I like this album.

White Demin, 2011, From Texas New to me. Standouts: Sweet Joy, Is and Is and Is, Keys 3.75

This was pretty good. I'm giving it four stars because this is the first album on the site (I'm only at #41) that I had never heard of that I actually liked and would add to my library and seek out other albums by the band.

This is very typical 2010 rock, but it manages to not be generic. It's very pleasant, but certainly not mind blowing. Although I can definitely see this album growing on me, so I will likely be revisiting it a few times in the near future.

It's no shock to me that the song with the most plays on Spotify is Street Joy. It definitely sounds the most "of the era." I'm not the biggest fan of that late 2000's / early 2010's indie pop rock sound, but this was already really tight and enjoyable. What really got me about this album was the transitions! Taking pop rock into psych was just great. The compressed and simple percussion on Street Joy turning into the tightly wound but light drumming on Anvil Everything was a lot of fun. Overall, very surprisingly enjoyable record. Being a senior in high school when this came out, I would have loved to hear this, but it must have slipped my radar (living in a rural area pre social media empire will do that).

Love, love, love this. I had it on CD first time around and I'd forgotten how good it is. The funky, proggy, jazzy guitars are amazing, the rhythm section slaps and it just seems all round like fun.

This is nice and new. Not the most original, but unique enough to set itself apart and make me wonder why it didn’t become more popular. Instrumentation and writing are well done. Production is nice; simple, yet effective in creating a unique feel. I was surprised to enjoy the detour into an instrumental track for “Back at the Farm” rather than finding it repetitive and unnecessary. The biggest issue I have with this project is also the reason I’ve never heard of it; there’s energy here, but no electricity. Not much to latch on to. Nothing entirely memorable, unfortunately. 4/5

Interesting take on “indie”. Never heard of these guys before. Pretty good.

Is and is and is

I was pleasantly surprised, these guys rock. I like how they seamlessly flow from one idea to another in their songs. Transitions are effortless to them, which is nice to see. Sometimes the songs fit in a few too many ideas, but I'd rather have that than not enough. Top tracks: "Bess St.," "Back At The Farm," "Street Joy"

These guys sound oddly familiar but I'm not sure I knew any of their stuff before. I definitely don't recognize the name. Vocals sound a bit like Dan Auerbach/Black Keys, and they also have a bit of a garage rock feel, but the 4-piece instrumentals sound more like southern rock of Kings of Leon or Goodbye June. I quite liked when they jammed, especially on Back at the Farm; the southern tinge played out nicely. It's Him! and Street Joy were also pretty kick ass - again, sounds so familiar. The album dipped a bit in the middle for me but picked up again at Bess St. I think I'm going to have to explore more of their stuff.

Never heard of this band, had no idea what to expect, and really enjoyed it. Great musicianship, wide range of styles (while still having a relatively cohesive sound). Enjoyed the somewhat throwback sound - probably the only strike against this band is that a lot of the songs "remind" me of something else. Can't always place my finger on what they sound like, but that suggests they're somewhat derivative (singing somewhat sounds like Radiohead, especially on Anvil Everything. River to Consider is like a tropical Jethro Tull). Regardless, I definitely enjoyed the album and will probably check out more by this band. Favorite tracks: Back at the Farm (awesome instrumental), Street Joy (nice chill track), Drug (nice bass line), Is and Is and Is (love the "hit" in the middle of the song).

Quite pleasant and some good listening. Preferred the instrumentals

belle decouverte. indie / rock / psy rock egalement. 8/10

I dig it

I'm a bit obsessed with this. ANd a quick Google on Reddit tells me they have several album just as good as this one. Mind blown as I've never heard of them.

Darned fun rock and roll

Interesting could use another listen

Excellent, I definitely hear Grateful Dead influence in the vocal harmonies, some of the musical interludes reminded Me of the Allman Brothers

Actually Good

вообще, вайбовенько местами сильно круто, очень импровизационно. но не все решения удачные, поэтому 4 с небольшим минусом

я такой эксперементальный блин клас

I don't mind the sound Of your voice, of your voice When you use it like your gun So much fun, fire your gun Casual as you are, gets hard to say I won't say, 'less you're going away He strings himself on up to your front door You've been a wall of ideas about the rich and the poor We could start home talking Make your focus break When you're left to yourself You throw it out anyway I don't differentiate We from they, we from they Feel my appetite Why is life sleepless night? Lean my head against an angry moon Always room, angry moon In and out of a metal chair In an unknown apartment where I can build myself up Before I make the scare String myself up onto your front door Yeah, this is pretty good stuff. 4/5

I really like this sound!

Fun, twangy jam rock. 4.5/5 rounded down.

4.0 - A solid indie rock entry from the 2010s that I’m happy to discover. The fuzzy bass and reverb-y vocals remind me of “Unknown Mortal Orchestra.” The layered and dynamic song structures sound like “Grizzly Bear.” Check out the deluge of flutes on “River to Consider.” This record is definitely worth a revisit.

Indie psychedelic rock. Man what an gem. Wasn't really sure what to expect from an album of these genres from 2011, but nothing could have prepared me for how hard this slapped. Eclectic and raw, this album was pure fun from start to finish. Clear influences from older prog and classic rock bands, but White Denim really makes it their own. All instruments stand out in their own ways throughout the album, and who can turn down a little flute here and there. Loved this album. Not a classic per se but a damn good album nonetheless. Will definitely revisit, especially certain songs. 4/5

13 years later, and I still haven't heard anything sounding quite like D. It's progressive-country-indie rock? It really seems meticulously crafted, albeit slightly overwhelming. 'Street Joy' is hauntingly beautiful.

I have no idea what exact genre this is and I don’t care. It slaps.

I’ve never heard of this band. Indie Rock with a 60s feel. I was expecting not to like this but was very surprised. Street Joy was my favorite. Is and Is and Is was really good as well. Overall pretty good album - 4

This was really nice! I liked the mix.

Man this was actually good. Hayley and I were jamming most of the time. May listen again. Good variety.

Pretty groovy, for real. Nothing spectacular, but it was just a good album.

I loved this album. these guys are somewhere between the grateful dead and Spoon. great guitar. Awesome, soulful vocals

I liked this one--good mix of psychedelia and power pop.

I’m pleasantly surprised that I have not heard of this album. Street Joy reminds me of Rufus Wainwright, who we had two albums ago, without the orchestral instruments. At times I feel like they tried to cram too many notes into too small a time (Anvil Everything).

The music is something else, it's all over the place, but in a really good way.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, I'll definitely listen again

I’ve enjoyed their album “Stiff” for many years but hadn’t dived into their catalogue. This was less polished but still good.

Never heard of the band, so this is a first listen It's him - like a 60s vibe brought into the next century Burnished - interesting. Gentle vocals with flashes of rock. Back at the farm - very good, in fairness Street joy - ok. Same as every other band Anvil Everything - bit experimental River to consider - so like Paul Simon Drug - I liked. Reminiscent of hippy days Bess St - decent rock track Is and is and is - not bad Keys - nah There's enough in this album I liked to warrant listening again. It's a good album. 4:star

Entretenido y con distintos colores igual que la tapa.

A very pleasant surprise. I was expecting music that was overly long and meandering, but it wasn't what I expected. Very talented group and their sound is pretty original with the addition of the flute and all. I don't know if I would include this album in my own personal list of favorite albums, but I am really glad I got to hear this. I tend to go through the listing of albums I have heard from this list and listen to those bands again and this is a band I am going to dive further into.

Wow, another surprise hit from the 2010s! Out of all the flavour of the month, eclectic, indie psych records that are included on this list this is one of the most succesful musically. Quite enjoyed the songwriting, playing and little quirks, for example the inclusion of flutes on ”River To Consider”. Will be exploring this band more on my own!

You can hear the dead influences but as a dead hater I like how they incorporate it. Honestly probably a 4? Really good

Another off-kilter indie album that sounds like it’s trying to be mid-2000s Animal Collective, except it works really well. There’s a bit more of a prog rock/jam band approach and it leads to some really enjoyable instrumentals with identifiable structures that complement the stranger vocal melodies and add more cohesion than you often get with albums of this ilk

I had never heard of these guys and am pleasantly surprised. I liked my initial listen very much. Good variety, interesting musically.

Late to the party, but happy to have discovered these guys.

I realize I'm extremely late to the party, but I believe I've found a new band to get into over the next few weeks. Talk to me in a year and this could be a 5. Or a 2. We'll see.

Solid album. Had fun listening to this while working. Nothing was too memorable but I enjoyed it nonetheless

Complex - needs more listening.

Lovedddd their sound. Will definitely be returning to this one!

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Street joy

Today's album was by an indie rock band with psychadelic influences. They are definitely a jam band as well. Like a modern Grateful Dead. Pretty solid overall. Favourite songs: Bess St., Street Joy, Is and Is and Is, Burnished, Back at the Farm, River to Consider, Keys Least favourite songs: Drug 4/5

I'm glad to know this since it’s a good choice to play when folks who like indie are visiting. It’s probably a little vanilla for me but as far as indie goes I like it.

I like the loose, “jammy” nature of the songs and the way that they bounce around effortlessly between rock/prog and jazz. The sound is from another era, with lots of room for guitar riffing and a rhythm section that really stands out. I keep thinking of 70s bands they might remind me of: Rush, Dixie Dregs, maybe, but they keep changing it up every song. “Street Joy” is totally different and radio friendly. It showcases James Petralli’s great voice, which is less apparent with the busy-ness of the other tracks.

cool, retro sound. kind of remind me of phish or a more modern version of grateful dead in terms of their jamming vibe. enjoyed this. def a.band i would have never discovered on my own.

Enjoyed myself with this one. Good vibes and got some more👍’s. 4.5⭐️ but rounding down to a 4.

I’d never heard of this album or this band until yesterday so it was great to listen to something really fresh. I enjoyed it a lot, kind of like a Beck meets Wilco vibe with a few Steely Dan licks

Melodic fast ordered which a touch o whimsey without whininess. Liked. Sounded so new and familiar; Its like I already knew this music. Its synchs well with the frenetic pace of the final week of work before Christmas Getting everything done but I can see how it'd be annoying if you're not in the right mood

I have never heard of this band before but I have to say I love what they do. This is an album steeped in 70’s rock. The singer, on the opening track It’s Him! is channelling Marc Bolan. The band, on Is and Is and Is, sounds like early Led Zep. Keys is straight from the country rock songbook - the country guitar break is great, as is the string ensemble. Back At The Farm is pure Allman Brothers - the benefit of the extra guitarist joining the band for this album. And River To Consider has a latin feel that is almost funky, flute & all. I really enjoyed this.

4.5 honestly, I really liked most of this one!

Listened Before? N Hey this one was great! Never heard of these guys, but I'm glad they're on the list. I agree with the Rolling Stone review of this album: It "often recalls late-Sixties Grateful Dead, when their songs still had garage-rock drive but were exploding every which way." It has a great flow, and the songs are not too long. I'll be listening to this one again. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Street Joy

Really enjoyed it. Listened 6 times, liked the singing, lyrics, and the harmonies. 4/5!

Very impressive. I'd never heard of White Denim before, and wasn't familiar with any of the tracks, but thoroughly enjoyed the whole album.

First listen Saved 6/10 Top track: Is And Is And Is

Was pretty standard for a psychadelic rock album, which is pretty good. Idk why but the main singer kinda sounds like Thom Yorke a little to me. Fav song: Street joy

There are some nice Allman Brothers/Grateful Dead/Santana vibes to these guys. Some bluesy free-form music that varied from track to track. Several tracks had a very loose-structure feel to them, but the playing was so tight that it's obvious that the opposite is true. "Burnished", "Street Joy" were really good songs. The middle section of "Is and Is and Is" pushed an okay track to a new level. This was a good listen. I would like to see how these guys do as a live act.

Now this is why I'm glad I'm doing this list - an album I truly needed to hear! I was unfamiliar with White Denim, and really wowed by fun grooves! Happy t have found it, and looking forward to further listens. That said, While many of the songs are great, with shifting rhythms and extended jams, I don't feel it holds together strongly as an album. A few slow songs don't hold up their weight lyrically or vocally.

Pretty good

This album was the biggest surprise for me so far. Never heard of this artist or album but I really enjoyed it. Definitely excited to listen again.

Great stuff. Loved it

This fits right in my wheelhouse, free flowing guitars, psychedelic vibes with a touch of southern/Latin influence. D was a refreshingly fun album, White Denim keeps their pickets tight here. Back at the Farm, my clear favourite really leaned on the psychedelic rock skills and jammed. Is and Is and Is shows off James Petralli’s vocal range as he shows just how good he is at classic rock choruses. I was excited going into it bc I confused them with White Fence but was pleasantly surprised. I’m down for the D… heh. 4 stars

Much deeper than the cover and band name suggested. Very well done indie.

Jam band for millennials. I can dig some of the riffs and trippy grooves. Slower songs give me the "dark side of the moon" kind of feels. Overall its a solid band I've never heard much from until not.

Very good

This was really interesting, sort of like if Phish and Yes had a baby. 4 stars.

Really good blues/funk boogie rock similar to BlackCrowes recalling early 1970s bands like Free, Zeppelin and even earlier styles from Jimi Hendrix Experience. A new find. Short and very enjoyable.

Really cool

The sounds of 1000 ideas colliding in one song. This may be a bit much for some as there is barely any respite from these jigsaw puzzle songs, but if you're in the rightframe of mind there are some soft vocals and beautiful guitar interplay. Best Tracks: It's Him!; Street Joy; Keys

Surprised that White Denim is a solid band, but I thought that this was like a classic indie sound.

Wow, this is fantastic! And a surprise hit. Could someone go back in time and and this to me during 2011? I needed this back then. I think, if you did manage to do that, I would have started a band at 19. I was already on this path, listening to a lot of math rock... but this takes all of that technical brilliance and love of absurd complex changes and pushes it to this fun-loving, really bright territory. This is a really happy record, and you can hear the chemistry. It's a new favorite! 4/5

Very good

Really cool album, these guys are clearly super super talented musicians. A little all over the place but in a way that works. Individual tracks aren’t quite memorable enough for me, like I’m not gonna get any of these stuck in my head but I don’t think that’s really the point.

Really enjoyed this, a band Iv never heard of, will be doing a deeper into their other albums when I get time.

A very nice, enjoyable indie rock album.

I forgot to mention that a Wizard A True Star was a fourth studio album, as is this one! It's actually pretty good. It's got very good energy.
