I’ll listen again
Decent. As well as all the oft-cited "OG" influences, I wonder whether the success of Kings of Leon, a few years before, also inspired them to play around with old-school blues rock in a garage/ indie way. This is more expansive in sound than KOL, though, and doesn't have the attitude (opting more for 'considered psychedelia' rather than raw snarl). There's a pleasing world music element to the rhythm section. It did become too meandering for me at times, in the instrumental passages especially, and I found Street Joy and the final track a bit dull. Overall: musical; great rhythm section; I enjoyed the late 60s/early 70s vibe. But to become a favourite for me personally, I'd want a bit more attitude in the vocals.
I've seen White Denim (at a festival I think) and thought they were a great time. Not sure if I saw them play many songs rom this album (way too much beer was drank that weekend and its been years) but this didn't have the same oomph I remember from seeing them live.
Very indicative of alternative and pop music of the 2010s was.
god the 2010s "rock" scene must have been pretty boring for this to be (apparently) so critically acclaimed. Not bad, and saved some songs, but in a week I won't be able to tell you the album name nor the artist.
Just kinda an average album. Nothing too special. It's fine enough. The second half of the album is better, and has some nice melody lines and progressions. Variety of different styles. They're clearly competent musicians, the album just never kicks into another gear, and just kinda stays at the same "yeah this is ok" level throughout.
This felt like an attempt at 60s rock that at times succeeded, but all in all, not an interesting album.
Never heard of them before. Not bad, but '60s sound from an indie band of this millennium is a strange choice.
Leftfield. Talented bunch though clearly.
Pleasant, but not a 1001 classic
Another whatever 2010s indie band to me. Its fine, just not particularly notable.
This album was better than it had any right being. However, I am slow to warm to strangers.
enjoyed it but pretty forgettable tbh
I haven't heard about this band before - this album is good, psychedelic jam/rock, I like the general vibe and that it doesn't overstay its welcome. But it lacks in songwriting a bit, most songs don't go anywhere.
I like the music, the singing not so much. The singing doesn't seem to match the sound, at least to me. Better than a 2, not really a 3, feeling generous today, 2.5 rounded up.
3/5
Decent rock album. I might give this a few more spins to see if I like it enough to add it to my library. The song Sweet Joy sounded familiar to, even though I didn't know the name of the song until I listened to it on this.
Not bad, but I really get the feeling they want to be a 60s band, but they haven’t decided on which one yet.
Solid, but meandering 3.5 stars
Fun interesting music.
Like half and half
D is an album which i am rather mixed on. There were points where it could sound like a 2 star album and points where it could sound like a 4 star album. The main issue it had was that in some of the songs, the composition was overly messy and disorganized which made them really annoying and hard to listen to. However, there are a couple of songs which are pretty solid. These songs don't have the above issue, are musically well done, have a nice vibe and are even quite catchy and memorable too. They were a bit few and far between but that allowed them to really stick out. If you can get past all the bad stuff, you will no doubt find some good stuff here. Best Song: Is and Is and Is Worst Song: Anvil Everything
Nice. A whole lot of promise but it's lacking in depth. Street Joy is the best track by a mile followed by 'Is and Is and Is' and Keys. I liked it enough to put on their 2016 album which I immediately liked better. Good stuff.
the fourth studio album by White Denim that changed the sound of the band primarily due to the use of higher quality studio equipment that allowed a warmer sound and a more expansive psychedelic sound that was critical acclaimed. The soul is still there, and is wonderful enjoyable.
3/5
Good fun. Can be a bit much but had some great riffs.
Enjoyed the album, not one I’ve heard before good mixture of melody and harder rock edges would listen again.
That's not my taste in music - But ok
3+
Never heard of these guys and this felt a bit forgettable generally. Could see them opening a lunchtime set at a 2010s festival- high energy, talented guitarists jamming away but unlikely to ever progress up the running order. Fine for a half hour album.
6/10…neo psychedelic / rock-country
Good playing, but washes over without much of an impression. Like clothes shop music.
Liked the sound, songs were nice to listen to, it's not abrasive so it flows well throughout. It lingered towards the end but it was still enjoyable. Will listen to it more often.
Interesting mix of genres, reminds me of Blind Melon, needs more time.
Decent. Good enough where if they were performing at a music festival I’d stop and listen and say “hey, they’re pretty good”, but not good enough where I’d buy a ticket for a concert of just them.
Didn’t know this before. Not bad. Not great, but I feel like if I heard it when it first came out, it’d have made a bigger impression on me.
I had never heard of this band. After reading the description and some reviews of this album and some other reviews of different albums, I was excited to check it out. I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed, but I was hoping to enjoy it more. Still, I’m glad I was exposed to this.
3+ Pretty good! Street joy. Somewhere between 3 and 4 out of 5? Something missing for the 4th star New rock Austin Texas
Love their slower tempo stuff. Enjoyed the listen but wouldn’t be in rotation for me
These dudes effin rock. Dayum. Solid musicians and great songwriting. Fun record. Great for a road trip
Very listenable. 3.4.
Fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
This was fun and unexpected in the way they explored so many different sounds.
Cool little indie rock jam band not overly obnoxious record. A manageable 35-40 minutes. Didn’t bore me but didn’t excite me either. Kinda forgettable. But by no means bad, glad I listened.
That’s rocky. Hang on, I mean proggy. Nope, right first time, rocky. No, proggy. Rock. Prog. Prog rock? Folk.
sky VI
I like white denim but this is just a bit.. safe? Still good
This was pretty fun. I listened a little distractedly, but I want to come back to it cause some interesting things were going on.
pretty fun indie/psyc rock. i enjoyed the pink floyd sample. nothing too crazy but a nice, fun listen overall.
All songs sounded like the same song. It was an okay song, I guess.
Nice jam album
Instrumental muito bom. Música favorita: Back at the Farm
is for "Denim".
3.5
Really interesting
Lauren Rothstein loves White Denim! I didn't mind.
It’s like a watered down King Giz, not bad. 2.9
I wasn't sure at first but ended up enjoying it quite a bit
A tightly played, genre-hopping record full of ideas, riffs, and jazzy detours. It’s clever, energetic, and fun in bursts — but not every track sticks, and the whole thing can feel a bit too tangled for its own good. Impressive musicianship, but more craft than connection.
White boy rock that sounds like they’re a molecule away from being Phish. There’s nothing wrong with this other than maybe it’s a little bland. I do enjoy the jamminess of River to Consider, and the hippie vibes of Is And Is And Is.
Another example of being a talented musician with no end product
I'm gonna be nice and give this a 3 because I did like Street Joy and Is and Is and Is, but most of it was just fine, nothing special. Not sure you must listen to this before you die.
Super cool. Songs are super jam packed with awesome stuff but not a whole lot of sticky melodies
indie rock loove it. this is just my genre. fun stuff tho! nothing suuuuper memorable but overall a good time, and get the hype.
A nice background record. Found a lot of songs enjoyable yet forgettable. A Mixed bag for me
Folk rock, jam bandy kind of thing. Not bad. Not sure why it made the list but whatever.
Not particularly memorable.
An odd blend of pop, indie, and country. I liked a lot of this. Think I’d need to take another couple of listens to fully know what I think. At this point no standout songs. But I did enjoy my time. 3.5/5
2 or 3 good songs, nothing super special really. album caught me in a bad mood unfortunately
Definitely heard who they were influenced by (fleetwood mac, pink floyd), but not so much who they've influenced. 3/5
These guys are at their best when they resist the urge to jam. They should stay in rock, roll, or groove more.
Yeah… imagine how embarrassing it would have been to die before hearing this album that no one has ever heard of
It's fine if you're looking for generic psych rock I guess?
No way this album is in the challenge? Is this a joke? Anyway, by chance, I appreciated the psychedelic and somehow "math rock" moments of this album. It was a pleasant, but uneven listen.
Ja, greit nok vel.
It's alright.
I've heard of White Denim but this is otherwise new to me. It basically sounds like what I think of 2010s "Rock" sounding like -- whiffs of Tame Impala and Animal Collective (yay) but also Hosier and Mumford and Sons and Avett Bros (less yay). Overall, fine.
nice
Thought this was pretty good. Kind of a Grateful Dead vibe at times, but not in an annoying way. Might like it more with more listens. 3.5, rounded down.
eh
Gets a bit jam-bandy at times but they are their own thing. So tight!
Pretty good. Had a bit of pep to it. Might give this another listen in the future.
6/10 i lecimy dalej.
Never heard of this band, never heard of this album, so I wasn’t expecting much, but I ended up feeling this was perfectly pleasant. Nothing I didn’t enjoy, but - again, why is this on the list? It’s not particularly popular or influential. They shouldn’t be adding albums from the 2010s until like, ten or fifteen years later to see what ends up actually mattering.
# 463 : 21/04/2025 : D Not bad, but nothing special. A couple of things stood out, but not something, I'll go back to.
Strange and confusing album - Wikipedia lists five rock genres, of which Psychedelic Rock is probably the closest. Not bad, but not great.
Felt run of the mill all the way through but I didn’t mind.
Alright early 2010s album. Shows its age a little.
People keep calling White Denim a "jam band" because of the Wikipedia extract, but they don't jam at all and absolutely aren't a jam band in any way. The album has that funny conundrum of having sweet pop melodies but no actual hooks. Nice but forgettable.
It was pretty good
I liked it. 3.5
Ganz cool
Nothing particularly wrong with this one, but I'm good with just the one listen.
An indie blast from the past that still holds a candle
Felt like it was trying to do too much or it would be higher
Beautiful covers, but fairly uninteresting music
good and sort of bright but not totally remarkable to me.
I knew nothing of this band going in. The sound is interesting, like a modern CS&N or Grateful Dead, but more prog. At some points, I just wanted them to calm down and get into a relaxed rhythm. I liked some of the harmonies, but didn't love the singer's voice on its own. He sounds like someone else, but I can't put my finger on it. I think I actually like the instrumental "Back at the Farm" the best.
Not bad. Liked the 2nd half more than the first. Enjoyable, but not amazing.
A lot of jazz flute. Pretty good jam band stuff. 3.5/5
5/10 Inoffensive but offensively mediocre. Best track: "Street Joy"
There were some slightly chaotic flute moments but overall this was very enjoyable, largely instrumental.
If the band Wilco was a bunch of math heads and jazz musicians, they would be the band White Denim. This was a pretty impressive album overall. Songs like Bess St. and It’s Him! we’re perfect examples. The song that made me stop and really listen (and play back) was jammy Back On The Farm. Their musicality was exemplary, progressive but not overwhelming, which is a good thing! I could definitely listen to this album again
Random thoughts: * This was solid indie/alt-rock fare. Nothing really jumped out at me on this. It was pleasant to listen to. * Some of these mid-2010s albums feel like they were some gambles on part of the 1001 author. I think the author would choose different 2010 era albums now in retrospect.
Interesting jam band like mix. Highly listenable.
Quite pleasant but not the most engaging album I've heard in this style of rock.
64/100. Performance by White Denim is an alright neo-psychedelic record. The first track stood out the most for me, while the rest of the album was just okay. It’s a chill experience overall, but nothing particularly major or memorable.
Guiding Light is an excellent song. Up and downs w this — kinda lost me when it got a little too Phish-y. But some definite high points as well.
Genuinely thought this might be a slightly more musically adventurous Black Keys side project at first, but nope, it’s a whole new band, with their own sound an' all. I wouldn’t exactly call said sound groundbreaking but the blend of southern bluesy/garagey rock with mathy/jazzy riffs is certainly something a bit different. Throw in some nice dreamy melodies on the likes of Street Joy and the result is a nice little discovery. 3.5
Didn't hear what all the fuss was about
Maybe a little too 2011 for me
Perfectly fine I guess but not sure I would have missed anything by not listening to this.
Wearing your influences on your sleeve isn’t a bad thing. It just hinders your music when you don’t really do anything with them.
Disclaimer: didn't listen to the whole album, only some songs Sol played while we played some Rocket League. Wasn't concentrating on the music super hard unfortunately because I suck at the game. I liked what I heard though, quite a bit of range throughout the album.
Not bad but pretty boring - like if AI made the most inoffensive American indie rock possible
3.5 this is pretty on par for the psych-ish stuff I usually listen to so I liked it but nothing really stood out to me a la melodys echo chamber/BJTM
I have listened to some White Denim songs before, but this is my first time listening to this album. Listening conditions: Locking in and creating shareholder value This seems to be the classic case of I really like just one song from an album and the rest are okay. I have 'Sweet Joy' on my 'Need a sook' playlist, and have listened to to semi regularly since probably year 12 or sum shi. My next favourite song after 'Sweet Joy' is 'River to consider'. Made my brain feel good. I probably wont listen to the album in full again, but I will probably listen to two songs again which is a record.
Busy instruments Nearly overcrowd soft singing Makes feel good indie
'Is and Is and Is' is a stonker. I really like these guys. Overall, a 4-star band for their playing and style, but maybe this is a 3.5-star album.
Some fun guitar and good songs but sounds a bit too much like generic car commercial rock and some points.
Great and interesting sound but the tunes don’t back it up for me 3.3 bc it’s almost there
White Denim is good but have never thought they were best in the history of music good.
Very black keys-esque. Thought it was a bit more interesting though so I’d bump it to a 3.5. Enjoyed well enough but don’t really understand why it’s on the list.
Maybe it’s a touch of Stockholm syndrome after listening to yesterday’s album, but when this one kicked in with a bluesy, southern rock feel I was ready for a long haul but it turns out there are 10 songs in 37 minutes on this one which is a lot more reasonable. The 10 songs are all pretty varied too with an interesting mix of styles from garage rock to fay indie to 60s psychedelia. Highlight is Drug which has the blunt chorus ‘We can take drugs!’. Quite.
The album is fine. Not overly interesting lyrically, which I kind of think they need to be given the deluge of this type of music. Competent enough. I liked Street Joy and Keys lot, but much of the rest largely passed me by. I agree with Jack, it is more of a 3.5, so I'll rate down to average it out.
Nice. Solid, guitar-based rock. Strong Phish/Dead influence.
Never heard of this lot before and it took a while for me to warm up to them. But then they kept going in different directions and I was happy enough to go for the ride.
Good musicians, uninteresting songwriting
‘Street Joy’ was good. The flute bit on ‘River to Consider’ felt kinda contrived. Not into extended jams. But this was fun.
I've never heard of this band! Braced myself but was pleasantly surprised. Good music I'm sure I'd love seeing live. Really enjoyed the unique instrumentation. This isn't usually my preferred brand of indie rock, but this was a strong album. 3.5 stars.
I wish I enjoyed this album more than I did. It's varied with sprinklings of different genres in there. Just something didn't click for me and I'm not sure what, maybe the production, maybe the vocals? I'm not sure I understand why people like this one, it gets a high 3 from me
A new discovery for me. Musically very dense with a lot going on and whilst there are some great hooks and melodies it just did not connect with me emotionally. Have listened to it a number of times over a number of days to give it a chance to grow - but just not sprouting. Maybe its the vocals. Maybe its just too earnest and trying to hard. It lacks spark and joy.
This one was solid but I wouldn't say it blew me away. Certainly better than alot of other nonsense on this list. Good talent on this album. 6/10.
I got what they are trying to do here and they were successful, but there are so many others (better) doing the same thing that is harsh to highlight on the progressive/psychedelic 70s rock, mainly when the album was released almost 40 years after the 70s.
Skramligt I början. Tog sig. Fina körer. De långsammare låtarna var bättre. Tre+
Feels more like 1971 than 2011. Some decent songs, but none of them put an "oomph" in me. Favorite Song: "Keys"
I immediately was entranced by this album. I absolutely loved the diversity within each song and I really did not know what to expect next. I definitely really vibes with a couple of the songs, I think more towards the beginning, but they were definitely a vibe. I could also see so much influence and similarities between so much music older and younger than them so I 100% understood influence. I liked it. 7/10.
Groupe totalement inconnu. =>3.5/5
Grateful Dead x Radiohead. Eh
Tässä oli vähän Hendrixin kaltaista meininkiä. Ei nyt ihan huono. 3/5
Didn't know it but nice vibe
This was just okay. I didn’t find anything here particularly inspiring. Also wasn’t anything that totally annoyed me. Middle of the road.
I had not heard this band previously. Intriguing. I'll try some other stuff by them, as they do have a unique blend. Overall, it would not seek this out again, but I recognize some complexities in the music. So I think they are good, but in a genre that does not grab me.
Au do, kei ahnig gha was mi erwartet. Was i mer aber fast nöd ha chöne vorstelle, weli no nie vo dene ghört ha. Jedefalls hets mi bim lose denn sehr a 70er johre rock erinneret. So chli jethro tull aber ohni folk. Au de gsang erinneret mi a die. Has interessant gfunde zum lose, aber irgenwie au chli aastrengend vo de kompositione her.
Jangly guitars and dripping with cool. But ultimately not for me. Very reminiscent of the 70s psychedelic albums I've listened to in here. I love Street Joy but the rest were just nice.
i thought it was alright, weirdly reminded me of radiohead, what’s up with that
It was mostly pretty okay, but I didn't hear anything that hasn't been done better by The Flaming Lips or My Morning Jacket. I had never even heard of White Denim before this and I doubt I will remember them in a week.
Nothing special. Don't care for the vocalist, but the music is OK.
Mi piace carino 3.5/5
First listen. Decent. Might grow on me.
Of all the rock albums ever, this sure is one of them. It contains some music, and is about as "mid" (as the youngsters say) as it is possible to imagine. I heard it, I think I liked it, then it stopped happening. This album exists.
Not that exciting but a pretty good one. Strong 3
It was ok. Couple tracks i liked.
I think maybe 2 songs got something in them. It's not a bad album. But does it deserve to be on this list? I don't think so.
Kind of generic sound indie music 2.9 stars
First half bleh second half decent
i just know 2011 me would have been blasting this at uni
Another one of these late period records on the list where the contemporary praise doesn't quite live up to the current reality. That said, as far as broadly defined jam bandish stuff this was more catchy and structured, with some decent melody and playing. Kinda what all the kids today think their king gizzards are doing, but the ozzies lack a je ne sais quoi that these boys have, even if not much of it.
Cool
Some great 2010’s alt, reminds me a lot of fleet foxes in a way. 3.3
Left no lasting impression
Sounds like the most inoffensive American indie rock album ever made. I'm not sure if that's a compliment. 3 stars
Good sound, well played, versatile, but I'm missing the songs to keep the attention.
Psychedelic mix of rock and other influences, nice to hear someone try something a bit new. 3.5*
Not a big fan of indie rock and that is what this felt like to me. Just a bit to slow without any real attention getter. 2.5/5
These guys are pretty good.
Hadn't ever heard of these guys before now, but quite enjoyed this one! Especially the "Back at the Farm" instrumental song and "Street Joy". The musical arrangements and compositions feel really well thought out, which for the most part is wasted on my simple mind so I won't pretend to know what I'm talking about on that front. But I enjoyed the album!
The 2nd listen through hit better, but I'm finding the music a bit frenetic. Listening around their oeuvre, the later albums are more to my taste. 2.5, round to a gentleman's 3.
Sounded kind of like a jam band. But pretty decent
No. 263/1001 It's Him! 3/5 Burnished 3/5 Back At The Farm 3/5 Street Joy 4/5 Anvil Everything 3/5 River to Consider 3/5 Drug 3/5 Bess St. 4/5 Is And Is And Is 3/5 Keys 3/5 Average: 3,2 Nothing to dislike about this. But also nothing that really excited me. A lot of the tracks sound similar.
Ever since I saw White Denim live around 2014 I've held the same opinion about them: they're very talented and they're doing some really cool things; there's just a level of polish here that keeps me at arm's length.
A very close approximation of late 60s/early 70s psychedelic rock - shades of the Byrds, Jethro Tull, etc - this sounds like it might have been recorded at Woodstock - except for the 40-odd year time lag!
An album that centres around guitars (both acoustic and electric) and some slightly inconsistent vocals. Sometimes the singing is fantastic and soulful, and other times – most times – it's slightly weak and nondescript. The music has a sort of soft rock-pop feel with a hint of country. Very layered, a little hard to follow, variety-show-esque. I got hints of psychedelic pop, which other reviewers also noticed. There isn't any particularly new ground covered, seeing that this was released in the 2010s and mishmash albums with an abundance of catchy guitar hooks had been done to death by this point. All that being said, I really enjoyed listening to this album. Even though there were no particularly memorable tracks, every song made it into my "Liked" playlist. 3/5 Key tracks: Back at the Farm, Street Joy, Anvil Everything, Is and Is and Is
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Was debating between a 2 or 3. The songs are actually interesting and fun to listen to and the production sounds great...but to my ears this sounds like a band imitating their influences without adding much to the mix. Not sure why this would be an Album I MUST hear before I die. Songs are enjoyable but I wouldn't say I connect to them very strongly.
Quite OK
3.5
Just fine
Good
Best Song: Street Joy. Pleasant and laidback. His voice really shines here, even if the overall production is relatively ordinary. Worst Song: Bess St. A bit too chugga-chugga for me. Overall: It's fine, but it also feels like a slightly less interesting version of the Black Keys, so I can't imagine when I would want to come back to this album specifically.
People seem to love White Denim but I can't say I get it. This had some good tracks but it was a bit all over the place and would have been better to stick with a style because some songs I liked and others I really didn't
The relevance of this album escapes me, but considering they need modern albums in this list, I kinda get it. This feels like a jamband, but it's quite clear that's just an impression. The musicianship is good, but my personal bias to this kind of music is really fighting me on this. Words like patchoulli and soundtrack to campertrips for trustafarians ring through my head. If I was an asshole I would give this a 1. I'm going with a 3, I could still be an asshole though.
I was contently enjoying this album and thinking "yea it's a pretty good prog(ish) rock jam band", and then I was delighted to hear "Street Joy". It was a perfect change of pace and showed more depth. The next song, "Anvil Everything" was really cool too and reminded me of The Mars Volta but in a more lighter sense. Cool album cover, but right now with generative AI being all the rage, it would come across as some bland overdone AI artwork. Fortunately this was released 13 years ago in 2011 and I'm assuming someone actually put this collage together, which is cool. A solid 3. It's hard for me to go back to these kinds of jammy albums and that's what's kept it from being a higher rating. It was nice to listen to, but I hesitate to say it should definitely be a 1001 album you must hear in your lifetime.
The music is good but I just feel like these guys are trying way to hard. 7/10 Baby's first psychedelic experience
I haven’t heard of White Denim before, but I like that band name. I went through a phase in my late teens on wearing bright white jeans and they were great. Anyway, I didn’t find the music here to be as great as I hoped. It was fine, and certainly not a chore to hear, but felt more like generic radio rock rather than something to be considered an essential listen. I didn’t dislike it by any means, but I just didn’t find much worth commenting on. If background rock was a genre, I think this would fit in there.
Felt set at this point. Not a bad sound but didn't stand out.
This album is way too new to be included. It's fine. It has some pretty good songs and but it's mostly in the "it's just okay" range. I highly doubt this will be on the list in a few years.
Enjoyed the jam band and indie vibes throughout
Interesting sound and more diversity between songs than I would have expected.
“Is and Is and Is” was good, the rest of the album was pretty soft.
3.3 never heard of the band and it was pretty solid. Lots of noodling going on, like lots.
I saw all the 5s and got excited. What a letdown. Love the music, but couldn't stand the singer's voice.
Groovy sounds, like prog rock but a bit more pop
First listen. It's alright. Dude's got talent but nothing stuck with me.
Surprisingly good album - had no expectation. Still, it is one of many good rock albums. Nothing more.
In a vacuum the instruments are great and the vocals are fairly good. However there are times when it feels like they don't entirely fit together. 3/5
Hadn't heard of these guys before but I liked the album. Plan to explore a bit more.
Interesting but quite a forgettable record compared to some on this list. Also not the most memorable White Denim record I heard - all in all quite middling
Very jammy
A masterpiece? Meh.
Like it a lot more than I was expecting, some of the best indie rock drumming I've heard in some time. Kind of a mix between Sufjan and Gizz. One major nitpick would be the vocals, very dated

6.5/10
Old school rock n'roll!
This group and their work were totally unknown to me and now that I listened to this album, I don't know that I could identify what kind of music it is. It's unusual and would be difficult to pigeon-hole into a specific genre. I wasn't bored but it didn't really grab me either. Maybe this is one of those albums that would grow on you with repeated listens.
A strange album. In some parts unbelievably boring, in other parts - dynamic and pumping
One of those surprise finds. Never heard of the group, album, or any songs.. but really quite good. Good all around rock/psych/jam band.
#253. This is, at least so far, the most enjoyable hipster nonsense I've listened to on this list to date. 3/5: it's fine.
So this album checks a lot of the boxes for me. I'm a huge prog rock fan. This had that feel a lot of the time where I could hear flashes of Yes and Tull. I appreciate musicianship. I like well crafted songs. I like good basslines. I could also hear flashes of the Beatles and the Dead. I did not dislike this album. You can hear it coming.....BUT there was something missing. Its hard to put my finger on. Maybe a slight deficiency in several areas adding up to a Meh. Not enough emotion; not enough tension built ? No solos that step out front and grab you? Lack of jangly or hot or memorable or infectious hooks? Not sure but I can barely give it a 3.
Street Joy was pretty good, the rest was fairly forgettable
The charms of this band eluded me- a decent noise if a little cacophonous at times.
As others have noted this is a really nice blend of styles. Feels like an album that might need 4-5 listens to really sink in
I was expecting something more bluesy or garage rock from the name of this band. I've heard of them before, but I always associated them with The White Stripes or Black Keys. I can't say this album blew me away, but there were a couple songs I liked, and, overall, I can see why people would like the vibe, especially in a warmer climate or summertime listening. I may check out more of their music to see if any of their other albums make a bit more of a connection with me.
This is the first White Denim album I’ve heard; I could have sworn this was a singer I recognized, they sound so similar to Jim James of My Morning Jacket or Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I was surprised that there was no one I’ve heard of in White Denim. This was a fun southern rock album which was polished enough that I wouldn’t consider it garage rock, but in the same vein. There’s some major influences from blues, psychedelic rock, and 60s rock and roll as well, to the point that parts of the album sound like it could’ve been recorded decades ago. Overall solid album, and I’ll probably check out more from White Denim.
These guys did a song I like called 'At Night In Dreams', so I was eager to hear a full album. Verdict? Yeah, fine. You could consider them a superior indie band, given their evident talent. I even encountered a proggy moment or two, with one section sounding like it had been pasted over from Caravan's In the Land of Grey and Pink. However, nothing quite landed - certainly, there wasn't a track with the immediacy and stickiness of 'At Night In Dreams'. Wouldn't come back to this, wouldn't object if it came on at a party.
Liked this more than I expected, cool guitar grooves. 3.5/5
D is another one of those albums that does a load of stuff throughout the entire record and within each song. It's never boring but not special and not really appealing to me, it's too proggy, although it is spectacularly well produced. A friend of mine is in an Indian Carnatic fusion band and a lot of it gives me similar vibes, just different geographic influences running through it. A lower 3 than yesterday's Arctic Monkeys offering.
This is good - prog influenced, bluegrass influenced, but still fits in the indie mould. Street Joy in particular sounds very very Pink Floydy, the instrumental bit in the middle of the song takes some very obvious inspiration from Speak To Me/Breathe From Dark Side of The Moon. I like it, but not loads, think it gets a really high 3 but only that.
it's conceptually good but it reminds me of an LL bean for some reason
Had it's ups and downs for me but I did like it overall. Will I listen to again: 50%
Some cool Allman Bros guitars going on the first two tracks. So much going on! I think I’d need to listen to this one many, many times before I’d fully get the band’s vision. Well-done production and lots of risks taken especially when going into prog zone on Bess St.
Didn't knock my socks off but it was very pleasant
Good, felt a little different from the main ruts this list falls into. Street Joy was the most played song and also my favorite.
It was good. It was like ambient rock.
Never having heard of White Denim before I was expecting the worst, but D was such a great listen. Clocking in at 37 minutes, not a minute is wasted on the Psychedelia Rollercoaster. 3/5
Actually a pretty decent album. Kind of proggy at times. 3.5/5
Never heard of them. Nice throwback sound. Sweet jamming. I dig it.
You know, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this album at first. This is one of those 2010s album picks that feel like they were made as guesses to what would become influential rather than what did become influential, as this band and album are completely new to me. However, I saw praise for this album when I did the research, and the reviews on this website seem mostly positive. Fortunately, I like the album. I wasn't sure of it at first, but it grew on me as I kept listening. The singing is solid. The writing is interesting. The sound is pleasant to listen to. It's got a good blend of modern and classic. I can definitely hear inspiration from groups like The Grateful Dead. Overall, while this inclusion in the book was a bit preemptive and this really doesn't need to be here, I am not upset at all that I listened to this solid album. 3/5.
Hyvää indie..
It’s ok
I found this album to have a bit of a repetitive sound. Not a bad one, just repetitive. Which made listening to it a bit boring. Street Joy was a different, slower, a bit sadder sound. Overall the album was kinda just average
It's ok but how does this qualify for a list like this
A very nice album. Soothing sounds
Some decent songs on there but pretty average for the most part
Sounds like Phish (says the person who's heard 2 or 3 Phish songs). Some catchy tunes. Back at the Farm has a catchy start but doesn't progress into the song I hope for. 2.75 stars rounded up.
I zoned out for most so idk
Never heard of this band or their music before. Thanks for the introduction.
Fun little indie rock album.
It reminds me a little bit of the Grateful Dead, which is a shame, as I despise the Grateful Dead for being about the lamest band to ever exist. I'm going to give this 3 stars, mainly for the flute. It was a bit of a non-event really, nothing stood out, but it wasn't truly offensive (like the Grateful Dead).
Nice enough, but not 'on the phone for mobile listening' good.
Pretty decent album, the instrumentals remind me a lot of KGLW (which I really like). My biggest issue with this album is that the vocals don't really seem to fit this style of music. His voice reminds me too much of the dude from Imagine Dragons especially when he got louder/more strained. This album is somewhere between a 3 and a 4, but I don't think there were enough songs that I really enjoyed to warrant a 4. Check out Paper Mache Dream Balloon by King Gizzard if you like this one.
It was ok for background music
It was fine for what it was. Didn't wow me or anything, but I didn't hate it.
This offered some very nice tunes. The transitions were great too.
Thought it was good but not great. Another one of these bands that couldn’t get over the hump
No idea this band ever existed…not overly impressed but glad I had a listen. Turns out my kids like this band. I’m sure if I listened again the songs might sound a bit more distinctive but who’s got time for that? I’m busy…got 900 plus more albums to hear, here.
2011 Genre: Indie rock, garage rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, Southern rock Standouts: Is and is and Is, Street Joy, It's Him, Keys 3.5/5
A blast from the past but quite forgettable for me.
Never heard of these guys. Have to give it another listen but first impressions were positive.
D is the fourth full-length album by the Texan jam band White Denim. This critically acclaimed album was produced by a four-piece of musicians known for their psychedelic, progressive, indie/garage rock. With tracks that stay interesting and expansive throughout, the mixture of so many genres of music makes for great melodies. Fans of jam bands will like this chilled-out rock session.
"D" by White Denim is a sonic adventure that takes listeners on a wild ride through a variety of genres and musical styles. Released in 2011, the album showcases the band's virtuosic musicianship and eclectic approach to songwriting. From the funky grooves of "It's Him!" to the psychedelic rock of "River to Consider," each track on "D" offers something new and unexpected. The band's tight instrumentation and intricate arrangements create a rich tapestry of sound that rewards repeat listens. While the album's eclectic nature may not be to everyone's taste, fans of adventurous music will find much to enjoy here. "D" is a bold and ambitious album that showcases White Denim's unique blend of creativity and musicianship. Overall, "D" is a standout album that highlights White Denim's talent and innovation. It earns a solid 3/5 rating for its boldness, creativity, and sheer musicality.
Disappointingly mediocre. I don't understand why this was a "must listen."
Indie but with added guitar solos not my thing but nice enough 2.7
Fun and good rock
No me molestaría volver a escucharlo
Some hints of Rush with the interplay of guitar and bass runs. A little too jam-bandy for me to LOVE, but still way better than Phish, Dead, etc. I like the voice on the singer but only when he goes hard.
Ok, so this one was pretty interesting. At its worst, you get the Jethro Tull vibes, but at its best some crazy prog rock throwback sounds. Definitely a taste of classic 60's psychedelia mixed in. So, there are a lot of elements at play and it's all a bit difficult to qualify. I liked the last track Street Joy the best. That was very well put together and consistent and ticked all the boxes for me.
When I saw an album from 2011 that I had never heard of, I rushed to rash judgment. With so few albums from the 2010s on the list, what made this worthy. What about… well, what about what? There were some epic albums in the 2010s, but it turns out 2011 might not have been the best year for music. Three albums from 2011 have made the 1001 list, but only White Denim and PJ Harvey remain. Are they the ones most worthy? I’d argue that the second Adele album should have stayed. But beyond that I don’t have a lot of strong candidates to unseat White Denim. There are a lot of artists who put out albums in 2011 that deserve an album on the list. It just shouldn’t be their 2011 album. All strong albums, but not necessarily the best choice to represent the artist if you’re only gonna listen to one of their albums before you die. This goes for St. Vincent, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Florence & The Machine, The Decembrists, Drake, and Cage the Elephant. (And maybe my favorite of the year, but a harder sell for the list - The Joy Formidable’s “Big Roar.”) So who was White Denim to merit placement? And this was all before listening 😂. Maybe I should just listen first. Because White Denim was actually quite enjoyable. They toured with Wilco in support of this album, which seems pretty fitting, though I think I prefer White Denim to the more lauded Wilco. “D” is a little lacking in identity, a bit all over the place, but each place they took us to was well-navigated. They fit nicely in with contemporaries like My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses in blending psychedelic rock, folk, and Americana with something new. I’m still not sure this is the 2011 album that belongs on the list, but I certainly didn’t mind getting exposed to it.
This has many qualities from genres I don't really care for much, namely jam-bands and southern rock. That said, it seems to elevate beyond those, especially with complexity and musicianship. It wasn't bad. Not something I think I'll come back to, but I can respect it.
Not my jam but I appreciate the album is solid for those who like the genre
This wasnt bad. Id listen to another white denim album.
Not too bad...catchy tunes but lyrics were out there a bit. Definitely alternative music... would listen to it again.
They were pretty cool, I like the vibes
Ok
Nother group/person I never heard of. Music okay but nothing outstanding.
The album is a very laid back indie rock album, with an upbeat feeling. the production feels fresh and interesting and does not get boring and the flute adds a uniqeness, overall i like the album but it is just not my type of music. 3.5/5
Okay listen...nothing outstandig or anything, neither good or bad.
No ihan hyvää yritystä, mutta jotain jää puuttumaan. Osittain tosi tylsää ja geneeristä.
An interesting album. Influences from other well-known bands and artists are really prevalent. It's not a bad sound and I may look into more if their music. I had never heard of this lot before so glad I've had the experience. I'm surprised that this album is in this list: although it's good, there are many more that are better and more famous/popular.
It was interesting but didn't find it very memorable or striking.
This was a new one for me. It was good. I will be adding it to my rotation.
I really enjoyed how the songs flow into each other, one of the better parts of the album; I liked mixing of genres and some familiar sounds I have heard before in other artists I enjoy; overall a good listening experience. I will need to revisit the album to decide whether it is nice and interesting only once, or has replay value. At this point, I do not think it will hold up and it will end up being repetitive, but only time can tell.
Eh, a few standout spots but nothing that sticks with me.
Perfectly okay rocky vibe, but nothing stands out.
2011 Genre: Indie rock, garage rock, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, Southern rock Experience with the band: None. Brand New Most well-known songs (Ranker.com). Anvil Everything, At the Farm, Burnished, Bess St., Drug. Standouts: At the Farm, Anvil Everything, Is and Is and Is. Very enjoyable first time. 3/5
I enjoyed this, but I think it needs more listens to appreciate.
Interesting. Lots of juicy progginess disguised in early '00s Americana clothes. Has a strong psychedelic skeleton, and yeah, the rhythm section is great, throwing a lot of notes in there. Like Rush for Deadheads. Pretty cool, a good listen.
this list has combed through cultural moments of the last 7 decades and then picked all the albums where the band incorporated flute I heard a catchy indie pop rock song (Heart From Us All) and a garage rock thing (Let's Talk About It) way back in 2008 and thought somewhere in between was the deal with this band. I had no idea that they were this much of a jam band. It looks like the song I liked is the anomaly. Good moments, only amounts to ok, as jam bands tend to. I think their first album is way more interesting. music: ... (⌐■_■)
This is maybe the definitive 3⭐️ experience to me so far. This had some interesting stuff, songs I enjoyed, good overall sound, but I’m not sure it’ll stick with me.
Genre: Pop rock Instruments: 4/5 Modern Translation: 3/5 Dance Potential: 3/5 Listening Location: Commute to work + doing analysis Favourite Song: Keys Made me feel: took me a couple of tries to get into but ended up liking this album. Made me bop at my desk.
Desconocidos totalmente
Pretty good, never heard it before
slightly more modern jam band, but still not great
hella boring, wish I was doing anything else or not really boring but not interesting on third thought, it was ok it was a little cute actually
3,5
Ok, I guess?
Kom á óvart, skemmtilega progg-skotið.
I’d never heard this before at all. Enjoyed it, will circle back on it for another listen for sure.
Thought I would like it more but found it pretty forgettable. Rating: 3.0
This is like the Grateful Dead updated for the modern age playing psychedelic freewheeling indie rock with a bit of prog thrown in. The musicians are tight, the writing is strong and overall it seems to work. Not really my jam, but I'll give it a quiet nod for their unique sound.
