Reviews (page 4 of 7)

I like this. A lot of different musical influences. Indie, jazz, progressive rock and psychedelic.

Really good guitar bass and drums 4.5

This gets RIGHT up to the edge of too noodly for me. Rips. 4/5

Told Nolan I was listening to D and he thought he was getting Deez Nuts'd 🤣

back at the farm shreds!! anvil everything shreds! these MFs don’t miss huh

Not a bad album

Decent, a great band

I had never heard of this album before, but it's consistently great. At times it feels like straight-ahead rock, but they include so many other little elements that just blend together perfectly. It feels like they were influenced by the jam band movement, but managed to keep their sound from becoming generic 4/5

I dug this album on the second listen more than the first. And since it was playing on Spotify it rolled into their other albums as I was working. White Denim is a new discovery for me and will be digging deeper

This was incredible, how have I lived my whole life and not heard "Back at the Farm". I listened to this whole album 3 times on Friday. Adding to my rotation. 4.5 stars

This is an album I will want to revisit in the future. It had a lot of elements that I really enjoy. I am happy to be dealt an album that I was completely unfamiliar with but was still very listenable.

This album was great. I’ve always wondered why more current bands don’t play in the style of classic rock, even though there’s clearly an appetite for it. This band does exactly that on this album and is able to sound all their own. I’m glad to to have stumbled upon this band. They scratched an itch I’ve had for a while.

Skilled stuff.

I only knew White Denim by name before listening to this. The most exposure I've ever had to the band was when Tame Impala gave them a shout out at a live show like ten years ago. So I was intrigued to see what they had to offer. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of most of these tracks. These songs are short and to the point, but do a lot with what they have to offer. This album is filled with twiddling jazz-esque guitar licks, and even some blues influence. Sometimes when you are listening to a song, you can tell the band was having fun recording it. I get that kind of energy from this album. It just feels like a good time. Burnished transitions so quickly into Back at the Farm, and the latter track carries a really exciting flow for its run time. Street Joy is a nice pace change that allows the singer to show off his vocals a little more than usual. Anvil Everything feels the most prog of any song on here, and River to Consider is built on a very catchy flute section. The closing track Keys is just full on blues rock, and I thought they pulled it off really well. Nothing about this is ground breaking. I don't think it was meant to be. This is pretty much what I come to expect from modern psych rock from the year 2010 and onward. And I can even hear where a band like Temples may have been influenced for their debut Sun Structures.

Not a 5 but close. Really, really enjoyed it and will come back to this band.

I’d never heard of this artist before, but I really like their sound. Definitely going to check out more by them in the future.

Eclectic rock. Started off more punky/surf rock-ey, ended more electronic/poppy. Pretty fun

Take the modern blues rock of Jack White or Black Keys, make it super fast and jammy, and add an acid rock twist to it. Almost like King Gizzard, except feels more improvised and chaotic with the instruments doing their own thing. Yet it's so dense, there's too much going on in each track, that it's insane only one track goes more than 4 minutes, and it's over in just over a half hour. "Street Joy" is obviously the hit single because it's one of the only songs people could track of. The ending of "Is and Is and Is" reminds me he sounds like Dan Reynolds in a lot of places, but good. But really, I'm not sensing a bad track. They all stand out, and it's pretty consistent. And obviously, no way you could get bored of this, just overwhelmed, but that goes by with repeated listens.

****4 What a great band. Categorize this one as trippy, psychedelic summer fun. Wide ranging influences, excellent, technical, joyful guitars. This one hits my sweet spot. The vocals are good, if a little dated "indie"esque. It flows nicely as an album, revealing more diverse influences as it goes along. Rocking to experimental to pastoral. First time listening, will definitely give this one many more spins. The band name had put me off, it being pretty bad, but man, as bad as their name is their music is good.

Pretty easy listening and enjoyable. I would consider checking this one out again.

Dig it. Seen them live before. Never listened to this album. Little proggy , little indy rock-ish. Unique sound. 8/10

Kinetic and dynamic (especially the drumming). Somehow one missed this band (presumably from the distractions of first days of parenthood) but quite likes the heady, spicy brew here. Quite well balanced but a bit too jam-band-y at times, and one feels suspicious of some of the virtuosity here, as if they might be show-offy, and not especially motivated to hear more (as if one's initial impression migth be threatened). Still, surprisingly better than one expected from a band one'd never heard of and has barely seen register.

Rock progresivo. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Never heard of these guys outside of this project - I guess they got popular after my media bubble solidified. Yeah, enjoyed it! The sound like The Shins got a little bit heavier, maybe, or Animal Collective dabbled with garage rock. Fave track - Hmnmm, "Anvil Everything", or "Drug", or "Is and Is and Is". I like the fact those tracks all sound like they coulda come from different bands...

shoot i wasnt paying attention, sounded good though, i’ll just listen to the most popular song and call it. shoot i stopped paying attention again. Well no bangers but still the best of everything so far besides the last one. British rock too op please nerf. Also note that the playlists before the last one had an inflated rating, and this one is a solid 4 stars.

Funky. I liked it a lot

Beautiful ambience, knows to not take itself too seriously. A great album.

Accessible prog.

Intricate and complex rock music. This simultaneously feels deliberate and well crafted but also like a jam in places. It is instantly enjoyable, but I'm sure there is a lot of depth, particularly to the musically literate ear (which isn't me). My preference was for the slower, more meandering tracks, such as Street Joy, which I could listen to all day. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Street Joy Date listened: 04/08/23

никогда про них не слышала, но точно надо ещё расследовать. не знаю что поставить, т. к. пока не поняла почти ничего, но поняла что это интересно. авансируем!

-okayyyyy this seems really cool! -the album cover is also really tight -i like burnished a lot -the voice with the guitar and the instruments……REALLY WORKS -back at the farm being only instrumental was really really cool -i liked how it fits in with the rest of the album -LOVE street joy -the whole vibe and then THAT VOICE!!!! -bess st is a very cute song -is and is and is. so magical and cute -idk guys i think this is a four star album……

Nice Discovery to me. I'm hearing loads of inspiration for later KGATLW music which is a good thing.

Surprised I hadn’t heard this one yet

Felt like a more creative Black Keys album. 7/10

She likes them

bom que só

Surprised: A modern album from a band I've never ever heard of and yk what it was quite enjoyable. Strong guitar presence which I always love with lyrics which honestly sounded really nice and pleasant. No stand out tracks I remember as per usual but I have to say I may have to give it another listen sometime soon.

Ok this is indie rock but with a bit of talent. Has a psychedelic feel, but structured in a prog rock way. I'm half asleep and really digging it. Fits the mood perfectly. 4/5.

I've heard of White Denim before, but have never listened. Out of the gate, sounds like we are in for some new-age psych / garage rock revival. Lo-fi production lead by fuzzy vocals and aggressive snares. The guitar leans toward the back for the most part, but carries through some light at times. Back at the Farm has that fuzzy bass jam that almost feels like the Working Man jam from Rush's self-titled album. Digging the overt jamminess. You could tell me that River to Consider was cut from a 1970s era live set of the Grateful Dead and I would fully believe you (until the vocals come in). Once again, I appreciate the jammy vibe. I will say that I have yet to hear anything I would consider "novel" on this album. It is solid, but it is more in respectable service to a history than it is charting its own territory. soft 4/5

I liked this album a good bit. Never listened to the band but definitely like the sound. I'm going to check out more of these guys music. Street Joy was my favorite song of the album

First couple of songs remind me of Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Back at the Farm is a jam. I was already starting to hear shades of King Giz, then the flute came out in "River to Consider". I could see this band slowly making it into my rotation.

That album was great. I liked how the songs had different tempos in order to keep things fresh. The guitar part at the end of Back at the Farm, and the yazz flute in River to Consider were my highlights. I really liked the guitar and drum work in this album.

"Hey, uhhh...give it up for White Denim! Holy moly what a bunch of... freakishly good musicians" - Kevin Parker aka Tame Impala did you guys know Tame Impala is only one guy????? Really digging this a few songs in. That was a great listen. I was busy at work but really enjoyed all of it and plan to come back.

Day 2: Quite enjoyed, lots going on but was fun and funky. Not many stand out songs but lots of nice guitar sections, nice vocals, nice vibe. Solid

Wasn't really sure what this would be going in, pleasantly surprised. Driving beats is always good

Une belle surprise, n'en déplaise à eltrapeze, qui a quant à lui été une très mauvaise surprise pour ses parents le jour de sa naissance.

solid album!

The style is interesting: 2010s alternative but with whole segments inspired by classic prog or just 70s rock. There weren't really any tracks that stood out, though. Will probably return to this album.

This is complex stuff. Halfway through the third listening my brain managed to comb out the different strands of sound and meaning in this album. I can hear Jethro Tull in the music, some Thom Yorke in the vocals, and it does sound of its time too - I really enjoyed the overall effect. I think I'll listen to this a lot when I'm at work, it's quite light on lyrics and vocals and I find the driving forward sound a good tempo for writing and thinking! Surprised I hadn't heard of them before.

I dug this album. It would have definitely contrasted from most other "stuff" that was coming out at the time. While listening, I thought, "This sounds like if Simon and Garfunkel had kept making records into the 2010s." But - it's also really jam-bandy, which I dig. Not quite like Phish or Widespread Panic, but there is definitely some "we actually know what we're doing" musicianship in there. I like all the odd time signatures they threw in. It might just be because I was surprisingly impressed, but I'll give it a 4.

In spite of listening to tons of stuff in this realm, I've somehow escaped ever listening to White Denim. I really dig it though. Indie rock with a lot of psychedelic influences with some gorgeous production. I'd honestly say that the instrumental parts are my favorite, but the vocals aren't bad either.

Cohesive, slick production and a huge blend of genres such as Americana, Blues, Funk and Psychedelia. This album unveils its complexities slowly and leaves you with some thrilling moments. Comparisons to Cream are valid for musical style but also musicianship. White Denim are so tight as a band and its clear they crafted this album meticulously. Though it flows really well and there are some great songs, it does at times lack a little originality in its sound which stops it getting an even higher mark.

It's alright for the most part. It's kinda like music that would be made in the 70s or 80s but without the pitfalls of the time and with modern production. A light 4/5

I heard of White Denim several years ago, because my sister-in-law's best friend is really into them (or maybe a guy she was dating was), but this was my first time listening to them. This album was a really great surprise. I didn't really know what to expect from this album, but the flow and pacing of the first four tracks really sucked me in. I loved that the songs were all varied in sound, but the album still felt really cohesive. There sounds were complex and layered, but they all had really great rhythm sections as well. The vocals here were really great as well; at times they reminded me of Foals. Overall, this was a really good album, and it caught me by surprise. Also, it's always nice to see another Texas band make the list.

A band I discovered via this very album. It took a while to really appreciate the brilliance of this record, and it wasn't until I caught them live that it truly clicked. For people new to them, Back at the Farm, is for me, the best example of the power of this band, the musicianship is incredible and when they lock into the jam in the second half of this track you get whisked away in a psychedelic whirlwind. There is a lot going on with the arrangements, and initially I found it to be too much, is it jazz-rock is it prog, is it psychedelic, no its all of those things. The time signatures aren't standard and songs go off in directions that you don't expect. But that's what makes this a record unique, and one that should be heard.

Groovy and peppy. Vocals remind me of the Black Keys (heh) a little bit!

Hard album to rate, largely instrumental jam-albums need multiple listens imo. This is a jam album with a mix of Jethro Tull, King Gizzard and Funk. Really enjoyed it but feel i need more time with it to see if it holds up during multiple listenens.

This is actually a right amount of weirdness for a normal rock for me! Very interesting instrumentation, some great bass lines and crazy melodies, with a lot of instrumental parts. It's actually for the better, because in general I wasn't a big fan of the vocal, maybe that's why it was so sporadic on the album. Very fun record, happy to look into their discography now!

After a few powerhouse albums, this one slipped a bit into the background, sounding a bit like the late morning show on public radio. However, a second listen got me to really appreciate their somewhat retro but always interesting sound. I liked this a lot.

This is a totally new one for me. It was quite listenable and reminded of the sound of some other band/artist, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I wouldn't mind listening again, although I kind of doubt that I will every think to do so.

Some pretty good music here that I liked pretty well. It did feel jam-bandy but fortunately these recordings didn't go on and on too long. Entertaining!

ZU KURZ! Erinnert bisschen an die Veckatimest von Grizzly Bear. Welch‘ Perle nach einer langen Durststrecke.

my great white hope, now nothing but memories and what could have been. the Ravel Morrison of alt rock bands. back in the downloading of music days i used to have a load of pre album recordings of white denim and they were terrifyingly good. a distorted, raucous, fast, exciting and messy 3 piece led by drums and bass powering along making pretty technical and difficult playing unnoticeable as it sounded so right. they never bottled that madness on an album and they've got progressively less interesting. still technically gifted but that appears to be the point of them now, a demonstration on technical playing, no discernable 'sound' and no hooklines or songs to remember. basically they've become a university music student band where the ability is through the roof but everything is by the book. despite all my crying and the fixed memory that this album was disappointing, the passing of time and the fading of my initial mourning has shown me that this album is actually pretty good. so what do i know about music? absolutely nothing.

White denim? Check their hard drives.

Really liked this. I'd heard White Denim before but never did a deep dive on them. The voice is soothing, and there's some really killer guitar riffs and solos here.

Very cool start to a nice album, 4/5

Retro, but really great. Would listen again

4/5. A rocking psychedelic country trip. The guitar work is fantastic and the rhythm section goes hard. Groovy and jazzy at times, this is a good musical experience front to back. The last two songs don’t hit as hard which keeps it from a 5 but a high 4 for sure.

Surprising good. Never heard of them. I like their progressive rock elements.

from dad rock to chill indie to jam band to folksy bluesy. a real box of chocolates of an album

Cat: I’ll definitely be listening to this one through again! Love it! So creative and fun and great sound. Big fan of changing time signatures and prog synth. Radiohead meets Yes. AJ: I don’t know what kind of attention these kids have gotten but they deserve more of it. They’re getting more of mine I CAN TELL YOU THAT MUCH. What a good rock band. Weird one too. Need a t-shirt.

Pretty good. Pretty, pretty good.

I was shocked to learn this was a 2011 album. I thought this was straight out of the psychedelic rock era. Great songs and under 40 minutes makes for a great album.

This was a very cool surprise! Great concept of revitalizing the late 60s rock sound, short and to the point.

It's so satisfying to press play on a completely unfamiliar album and have zero expectations, only to be genuinely impressed by the music. If only more late '00s and early '10s indie albums were like this. D still has the trademarks of the indie music of its era, but it sounds infinitely more interesting thanks to its variety and character. You can bet that I'll be returning to this record sometime, especially to the songs that have words. Really cool stuff! Standouts are Back at the Farm, Street Joy, Bess St., and Is and Is and Is.

I have never heard of White Denim before and all of the music on D was new to me. I liked all of the tracks on this album. I'm not sure how to even classify this album. I heard some tracks that were leaning towards country (if only slightly) and others that seemed to point towards Progressive Rock (e.g., "Bess St."). It was easy to settle in and listen to the whole album, which was assisted by the way in which some tracks feed right in to the track that follows. "At the Farm was the track that I rated highest. I could easily listen to this album again.

The best description I've seen for this band is "a jam band that refuse to be boring." Really fun record. Best track: Back at the Farm

I was very pleased with this one, Good songs: Street Joy

4.5/5. So fun to listen to while high.

Got a bit of everything. Every dynamic accounted for.

Dit album had ik echt totaal niet verwacht in deze lijst! Altijd gedacht dat het een totaal obscure band was, die toevallig eens op mijn pad was gekomen. Desalniettemin: een heerlijk kort en puntig plaatje!

A rich and spicy blend, with some notes of prog and considerable jam band feels.

These guys were pretty popular in Austin and Texas for a while. As boring as it sounds, the rhythm section is so hypnotic: bass guitar and drums really set the music apart without distracting from the dreamy guitar and vocals. Surprisingly enjoyed this a lot.

This was a good indie rock album. Felt tropical/psychedelic at times and folk-y at times. Experimental enough without going overboard. Standouts are "Street Joy" "It's Him!" and "Drug" which exemplifies the band's instrumental talent.

PREFS : It's Him!, At the Farm, Anvil Everything, River to Consider, Drug, Bess St., Is and Is and Is MOINS PREF : Street Joy

Best: Anvil Everything Worst: Bess St.

I didn't know this band. Some good tune. Overall a good album.

Not heard anything by White Denim before, really enjoyed the album, crossing different genres, nice guitar work too.

Was surprised by this. Lot of influences here. Great sound

White Denim do a surprisingly broad range of things on D, at some points sounding inspired by Vampire Weekend and at others sounding like a very toned down version of Yes. I have to admit that I'd probably rather listen either of those acts instead. It had the feel of a classic rock album but without the hits.

King gizz esque

An enjoyable, if not especially memorable, rock album. I liked the shifting tempos and bouncy instruments.

yeah... like.. I guess. Drummer is nuts.

Didn’t take a deep listen but liked this and will circle back. Feel like I’ve encountered b4.

It was fine

This was enjoyable.

This was a really pleasant surprise. Genre bending, a little rock, a little jam, a little experimental. Would listen again!

I was not expecting a 2011 release here, let alone one I was completely unfamiliar with. This was fun, often frenetic, but overall inconsistent. Some tracks stood out with their cool, interesting ideas and some were in one ear and out the other. I liked the blend of a jam band sound with psychadelic moments. Pretty intriguing as a whole. 2 listens Favorite Tracks: Is and Is and Is, Street Joy, Back at the Farm

Expectation: -> Have not heard of this band or this 2011 album. After listening: -> Several decent songs, none that I had to skip, though little that excites me or that I'll likely remember beyond this week/month except maybe Street Joy. That song is clearly me favorite track. Track ranking: Street Farm Burnished River Drug Is Him! Bess Keys Anvil

I wasn't really sure what to make of this one. I really enjoyed the more modern takes on psychedelic rock (it hits that perfect sweet spot between "psychedelic" and "rock" and I find that far too many artists steer to far in only 1 direction.) The contemporary indie rock was fine I guess, and so were the jammier bits like "Back at the Farm." While the songs have this nice rocking edge to them and everyone puts on a decent enough performance, the songs here lack memorability and come and go with at atmosphere as breezy and the feather light production. Definitely a product of its time but I'm not 100% sold on this being such a seminal album as to warrant an inclusion here...

These guys remind me of a lot of other bands but don’t carve out a strong identity for themselves through memorable songs. They’re kind of all over the place: one minute it’s Jethro Tull flute, the next Animal Collective, then hard rock followed by country. There’s a lot of guitar noodlery, and the singer doesn’t do much for me, either.

Good but forgettable indie rock. If i were a betting gal I'd predict this gets dropped from future editions, since Dimery seems to only remove albums from 1999 to now to add new ones and not any of his precious Classic Rock pantheon.

Pretty neat - I enjoyed this

Strange inclusion I feel. Not bad but just a bit of a headscratcher 3/5

If Multiple Personality Disorder was an album, it would be this one.

Okay, fun little rock album. Sounds like Beatles meets Black Keys. The grooves and rhythms are fun, vocals are nice, and everything complements each other well. This was a decent one for something that's brand new to me.

These dudes can definitely play but I can tell I'm going to forget this about 5 minutes after I listen to it.

Definitely some solid riffs on this thing but a lot of the stuff here is insanely forgettable

Fun, but busy

Не понял нихуя задумки, но в целом раскурился

No conocia, pero bastante olvidable

Algunas bien, captando mi atención. Otras no.

Not really my vibe

Good, not brilliant. oK.

No private session used for Spotify. I have listened to a couple of White Denim songs, but I've never sat down and listened to an album. This album was fun. It rocks. I appreciated how sophisticated and more complex the album got..it wasn't just generic rock. I will have to remember this one.

Solid rock/jam band outros

Nothing really stood out to me on this one, wasn't bad by any means but didn't get my attention

Best lekker

Blind album and artist. Some little gems within but not enough to carry the album. 3

An anachronism and amalgamation of complementary styles that span several decades. Some vocal harmony, jam band noodling, a bit of progressive rock, post-rock elements, and Appalachian 70's rock influence create something upbeat, not entirely new, yet still worthwhile.

Not as good as workout holiday!

Better than I thought!

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would after the first few songs. This one was bookended by tracks that I couldn’t get into, but the middle was pretty solid (Drugs, Bess St, Street Joy). 3.5

Funny enough, this band opened for Arctic Monkeys when I saw them in 2014. Nobody else in my group enjoyed them, but I think I was predisposed to their jammier elements growing up on Phish and Dave Matthews Band. It was a great show all around. I do think they’re a better live band than they are in the studio. Or at least more interesting when they’re given free rein to let the music drive itself.

This album was a sound that was fine-tuned by other groups later in the 2010s, but props to this group for being ahead of the curve. The back half of this album is where things really got going.

This is a nice album sonically. Very cool guitar riffs and nice vocals. I dig it.

It's all over the place but also the songs form a cohesive theme. Not really sure what that is though, as not much really stood out to me.

Nice enough

Surprisingly good. Wasn't what I expected.

I think this album is alright at what it does. There isnt anything that made me sit down and think because it was either too good or bad. In my personal opinion, calling this psychedelic rock is pretty misleading, it isnt really that. 6/10

A little too noodling around for my taste but I did like "Street Joy"

Pretty good yeah

Psychy

One of these songs annoyed me, but the rest of this was pretty good. Interesting for sure.

D. Hahaha. Yknow? 🤣 this had some really good moments honestly

First listen I was at an annoying 2. More spins, it gets better.

Liked this one a lot! Would have been a playlist staple if I’d discovered it during the Obama era

Interesting mash-up of the 60s and 90s. Does not evoke a 4-star rating on first listen, but is a solid 3-star.

no strong opinions but it's nice fav song: It's Him!

more forgettable indie rock from 2011. competent but boring. idk why critics back in the day ate this shit up so much, shit so butt

Me gusto bastannnnte

Favorite track: Drug other picks: street joy, it's him

This wasn’t bad, but I was not blown away. It had some good moments, but middle of the road for me.

Yet again a good not great album

Pretty good, nice rock, sounded good, nothing really special.

funky & interesting listen-music was better than vocals/lyrics, few tracks ramble a bit. a bit of Grateful Dead vibe

Lot better than I thought it was going to be considering the band name...

This is a hard one. I want to give it a 3.5. I Am less familiar with this record than I am with Stiff their second album. I like a lot of the tracks and it hands well with “Keys” but it gets a bit wifty in parts. The musicianship is there but overall too meandering for my taste.

It's fine. Don't mind hearing it, don't need to hear it again. The jumble of sounds they incorporate are interesting, but ... it's all about songwriting. Not very memorable songs here ... they're fine. Drug and Bess St. are pretty strong tracks. Is and Is and Is sounds like Beta Band. So, that's pretty good. Keys is pretty good ... so, a strong finish to the album. Not sure I'll ever come back to this band, though. It it a lot like listening to one of the other Beta Band albums other than Three EPs ... solid, but you just want it to be a lot better.

This album reinforces my previous screed. A perfect three-star record. Nothing on here i disliked, but nothing that stood out in my mind. I would listen to it again, but also might not recognize it if I did.

White Denim is a modern treat. Some blues, psych, rock with some twang in it. I've seen them live in a small venue and they put on an INCREDIBLE show. That being said, while this album may have put them on the map, I much prefer their next album Corsicana Lemonade. That album is a 5 for me. This is the middle of the road.

Punky Byrds meet psychedelic Turtles. Not a fan of the instrumental.

Early 2010s indie, not the same type of 3 as Speakerboxxx

10’s Indie ⭐️Street Joy

Bit meh TBH. I can see why it was liked, just not for me unfortunately.

I listened to this while I was walking Mia yesterday. It was alright. Nothing more than average. The drug song was kind of funny.. Made me think that it would be one of those bands that we use to listen to at Park City.

this is fine, I guess. It's just really not hitting rn, it might just be my mood.

Very nice good album

White denim sounds like a terrible fashion choice. Like something Wes Watson would wear and then beat his wife

This album is technically sound, but stylistically, it didn’t really land for me.

Very eclectic and feels like one I’d need to give another go. Downloaded

After a bit of exploring, I'm conviced they put the wrong White Denim album here by not including Corsicana Lemonade. Ah well, I have to rate D now. This is really impressive and cool music, that blends so many influences and has much more variation than I expected beforehand. Great drumming too. That all said - it didn't make me *feel* that much. That said, this must've slapped live. Faves: Back at the Farm, Street Joy

Lovely music for a sunny drive.

pretty entertaining record. I liked it. It has some impressive instrumental parts but I doubt I will listen to any of it again. Solid record.

A very full-sounding album, almost cacophonous at times. I enjoyed some of it a good deal (like Street Joy) and I found other tracks a bit challenging.

A bit of a mixed bag this, but generally pretty good. They had that southern US vibe that was somewhere between meaningful and nonsense. On the songs when it works, like Street Joy and Is and Is and Is, it works really nicely. I'm not totally blown away, but I definitely didn't mind it.

While King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard were just warming up, White Denim were already in full swing! Honestly, it's surprising they didn't experience the same wave of popularity — their music is very similar in places. Perhaps the reason is it's the purely American school of jam rock, a genre known for its lengthy improvisations that aren't everyone's cup of tea. The album, however, doesn't feature any overly long songs, but the spirit of, say, the Grateful Dead is fully present. It feels like at times they've mashed up all sorts of genres in a single song: a jazz guitar part transitions into a progressive riff, the drums suddenly leap into a high-speed psychedelic rock fill every now and then, and the bass seems to float through the entire album, sometimes diving deep, sometimes overshadowing everything else. An interesting sense of madness, but madness with mathematical order.

Groovy but forgettable

Really solid.

This is where restless rock finds its center — not by slowing down, but by learning control. From your vantage point, D feels like a band stepping out of chaos and into crafted momentum. Where earlier White Denim records jittered with unpredictable energy, this album locks into something deeper: groove as intention, not accident. There’s still the DNA of psychedelic rock, prog flickers, and Southern warmth — but now it’s channeled. The guitars don’t just explode… they resolve. Tracks like It’s Him! and Street Joy carry that tension between wildness and clarity — riffs twisting, then landing exactly where they should. Lyrically, there’s a quiet undercurrent of atonement. Not heavy-handed, but present — a sense of reckoning, of trying to align impulse with purpose. Historically, it lands in an era where indie rock could have drifted into fragmentation — yet D pushes the opposite way: toward musicianship, cohesion, and earned looseness. ⸻ My Journey Note: If Out of the Blue was orchestrated light, this is something more grounded: rock searching for balance — and finding a kind of grace in restraint.

Average

Some cool jams in this one. Nothing super stand out but fun enough to meet the threshold of 3

It was pretty good but nothing I’m going to go back to

was ok

if i wanted to listen to an 2010 indie psych alt rock album i'd put on Innerspeaker by Tame Impala not this. Why is this on the list and that isn't? Maybe cause White Denim is American and Kevin is Australian???? I can't take this list seriously sometimes. Album wasn't bad tho.

A little too jam band-y, but overall don’t hate it. The flutes on River to consider were a surprise.

Strong US Ozrics vibes here. It sounds like it could have been recorded back in 1969.

The album sounds 50 years older than it really is

speedy and baladas, nice mix, OK

Lyssna igen

Interesting. But nothing more.

Unruhiges Rockalbum ohne Leuchtturm, bei dem sich die Feage stellt … was machst Du hier?

Vet, niet crazy

Pretty good and groovy. 3

This was such good fun to listen to. I would say this chicken is pretty well seasoned. If this was playing in a cafe, I would have high expectations about the coffee. Not my kind of thing though

Chill album with some really nice parts.

Instrumentals and overall music sounds good just not something I’d jam with

kinda sound like a worse version of the black keys

Favourite Songs: Anvil Everything

Zone out a little bit. Songs didn't stood out to me except for the last one.

I liked the instrumentals more than the songs with the dude singing. Never was bad though.

Honestly. I went into this probably with the wrong mindset, like, maybe I wanted to hate it. But I didn’t. It wasn’t bad really. Not really my style if I am honest. Psychedelic indie music. That’s probably how I would describe this … but it was cool. Not a bad album really. Middle of the road. Not sure why it’s in the top 1000 though if I am honest. Doesn’t overly stand out for any reason.

A garage band and jam band all in one. There were also some tunes like “street joy” that seem radio ready? Maybe they were big at the time?

3.5 Jangly 60s Westcoasty infused

Þetta var allt í lagi. En get alveg sleppt því að heyra þetta aftur.

2.8 2x

A little jammy for my liking, but still a solid album.

Every now and then you stumble onto a diamond in the rough—a true needle in a haystack—and today’s album might be exactly that. I went into D by White Denim knowing absolutely nothing about the band, and it completely won me over. It felt unexpectedly refreshing, never overstayed its welcome, and kept my energy up all morning while I worked.

Listening blind, I found this to be a completely satisfactory album. Nothing here was overwhelmingly great. It's like a warm blanket on a cold day, it surrounds you in comfort and provides a positive and safe feeling so you can just..... be.

I didn't care much for it, but it wasn't bad. I actually enjoyed some of the songs. It's just nothing memorable.

Never come across this lot before but was a good discovery. Not exactly something I would want to listen to regularly but would make an excellent addition to any smart playlist to hear randomly. Good album cover. Reminds me of one of those ‘find a hidden object’ puzzles. 3/5 10/2/26

Indie rock, but not essential. Sounds like the yeah yeah yeahs exoerime tal period. Not sure we needed this on the list.

Not too shabby

Quite enjoyed this

Pretty good. Dipped in a couple of places but quite a good listen.

Really enjoyed that. Not quite a 4. But a bad I need to listen to more. And would enjoy seeing live. 3.75

I liked a few songs, the others were meh.

6.0/10 Didn’t hate this.. there were a few groovy tunes

Yeah, I don't get the addition of this album to the 1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list at all. I mean, I guess they're okay, in a "we kinda want to be The Black Keys, but we're gonna throw in some other random musical elements from time to time" way. And it's entirely possible that as a later edition addition, this bumped off an inferior work (maybe a third or fourth album by some mediocre mid-90s British pop group?). Wouldn't surprise me. If anything, though, this is probably just more evidence that there are really NOT 1,001 albums that any of us MUST hear before we die. If you're goal is to try to come up with that many, after awhile, you end up just randomly throwing stuff like this in there.

I'd never heard of White Denim before or this album. Definitely a jam band feel with shorter songs. Their sound reminds me a bit of Widespread Panic or Goose. Definitely more musically driven than lyrically. I liked it and would listen again.

Indie rock is cool but doesn't really match my vibe... Street Joy was pretty nice though.

Some cool stuff going on here, I appreciate the psychedelia, but not much really grabbed me. 3.5

Sounds good. Definitely one of the albums ever made. You can die without hearing it, though.

some good moments

some good moments

Hadn’t heard of white denim before yesterday. This was pretty fun to listen to while we made bucatini carbonara. Except we didn’t have bacon or guanciale or whatever so we just used chicken but kind of over-salted it to replicate the flavor and it turned out really good! Do you think this got included because there just aren’t 1001 super famous records out there, or did they wanna mix in some more obscure stuff. I’m leaning toward the latter.

Likte det.

3-4 et sted, innbyr til gjenhør. Synes mye var fint, behagelig.

Nice 70s callback.

Kind of a modern take on psychedelic rock. Pretty cool but not extraordinary.

It took me a track or two to get into it, but very good bass work and drumming on Burnished and especially the instrumental At The Farm. Even better as it builds, with heavy guitar riffs amidst the chaos. Street Joy is different, slower and emotional, before the fast, jazzy riffing of Anvil Everything. The next song gets even wilder with flutes, and then it settles back into something like indie/garage stuff, if it was played like prog rock by jazz musicians. The latter half of Bess St has some of the best moments of the album. The last track is different, dreamier and bluesy. Ok, this had me off guard a bit. I definitely like it, but might need to be in a specific mood.

I think I'm getting old. This sounded exactly like a combination of Dirty Projectors and Real Estate (so much so that, when the album ended, it switched to a Real Estate song and I didn't notice), but I'm sure people my age in 1967 probably said the Kinks sounded exactly like a combination of the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Anyway, I'm giving it 3 stars, but it's very possible it's way better than that.

Huh, I've never heard of this band. The cover art made me wonder what was going on there and I didn't have high expectations for it. But it ended up being pretty interesting. Some of it is very jam band, kinda like Little Feat or the Dead. Other bits are more complex, with occasional hints of Tejano and Canterbury sounds dropped in here and there. So it looks like we have a new genre here, "Texan jam-prog." I don't see myself reaching for it again, but it was a fairly enjoyable surprise. 3/5

i’ve never heard of this band before but their music sounds like every indie band from athens in 2016 that has Lamar Dodd art students in it and would only have shows at Flicker or the Hull St stage at athfest - i’m bored

can't really comment on this as i don't necessarily remember admittedly. i think they reminded me of kings of leon though? i don't recall.

Gosh, I really wanted this to be a solid 4-star album for me. It's right up my alley in terms of what I tend to listen to now. The album started off very strongly, and fell apart by the end.

Never heard of this band before. Like a pop version of a jam band. Overall the album was enjoyable. 3.5/5 Might listen again

Robert is very nitpicky with newer stuff on this list only like 5% was released after 2010 if that much. So WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH ARE YOU CHOOSING THIS ALBUM for newer stuff??? Its not like there was nothing good released in 2011. Born this way for example is better on all grounds than this rubbish. I find it impossible to believe you can find anyone ANYFUCKINGONE who knows of this bland album and not Lady Gaga's. Im genuinely so pissed right now. If this is your jam great good for you, but you can't deny that this was not influential for the 2010's whatsoever. Like it all you want it doesn't deserve a place in a list like this.

I liked this album, it was fun and felt nostalgic for me. It was a little repetitive but kept me interested. My main focus was on the instrumentals in most of the tracks, but some of them were more vocal-centered. The vocals were nothing special, they fit well with the vibe and were well supported by the instrumentals. I quite enjoyed the instrumentals. They gave classic rock with a twist. I liked the complex drum patterns and I thought the time changes made the whole record sound a lot cooler. I do think a lot of the tracks were very similar sounding, but I appreciated the small complexities that made them different.

I thought I would like this band more, maybe it needs a second listen.

pretty enjoyable

This wasn’t bad, it was just a little too noodly for me.

A bit odd, good at points but valences out to a 3

Confusing blend of 1960s-era white boy blues and contemporary (to 2011) white boy hipster music. Plus a flute? Not a fan of flutes. I liked Street Joy, apparently the highest-rated song on the album.

I have unresolved roommate ptsd around this album unrelated to the album itself so I cannot judge it fairly

Zuhause, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Ganz gut.

Street Joy

***An ok album, mostly easy listening

Overall Rating - 3.05/5 (6.10/10). Overall very solid album.

3 and a half. Really enjoyable

Track one does sound quite generic but did enjoy the bridge section and vocals Guitar on track two instantly grabbed my attention and great musicality (blended perfectly into track 3) Track 3 feels like they are showing off but not in a bad way. Great guitar solo. Track 4 had great synth design and a beautiful vocal melody and lyrics By the end it began to sound a bit samey

I like the drums in this album. Goktug says its got prog rock feeling bc intricate solos and intros blends into math rock of very intricate rhythms.

New to me band, but really liked this a lot, as well as a lot of their other stuff. Great new find. High 3+.

Prosječna garažna dosada

Pretty good just not anything crazy

Good blues rock, but hasn't stuck with me.

This one is totally competent—tight playing, interesting fusion of styles, but nothing on it really reaches out and sticks. It’s the kind of album that feels like it should click more than it does. Fine, pleasant, but ultimately forgettable.

Nothing special, but a solid listen.

Pretty middle of the road indie rock

Aight.

Not bad, never heard of em before, so was cool to check it out

I liked it! One song I loved and added to my library. Bring back the farm something. Would explore more

I forgot this album as soon as it ended.

I’m usually quite sceptic when it comes to newer additions to the 1001 book. But this is actually quite cool and catchy

5/10 Too much noodling for me. I didn't hate it. 11-18-2025

Ca se ressemble trop et c'est parfois énervant dommage car c'est mon style

decent listen, could consider revisiting but not at top of my list

A band Id never heard of despite paying quite a bit of attention to new releases in 2011 in similar genres. It was serviceable as a (what a Gen x would call) alternative rock/psych rock album. However, after hearing this, there had better be a couple Grizzly Bear entries on this list.... A band that I believe does this style much better

It's ok. It's musically interesting and very well produced but I don't feel the songs are as strong or catchy as some of their better work.

Not what I was expecting, but really good for a jam band

Not a bad album. I had never heard of this band. Sure I would listen again

Not bad.

No idea what i'm getting into with this one, but the album cover sure has a lot going on. Flute solo a la Jethro Tull in River to Consider. Can never be mad at a random flute solo in a song. The album is very solid and a great modern example of progressive/psychedelic rock. This album would have fit in perfectly in the early 1970's with the many progressive/psych rock bands that were everywhere. I love the focus on the instrumentals and it doesn't feel too cluttered or forced with lyrics, you can just enjoy the rock. The fact that they're all great musicians and sound incredible is kind of a given here. They sound great and it's a great album. That said, they're not really pushing the envelope or reinventing anything, they're just a solid band. I commonly hear stuff like there's no rock bands anymore......well here you go.

Very unoffensive, middle of the road type of stuff Best Song: Street Joy Rating: 6/10 Stars: 3

Decent but did not leave a distinct impression

whatever

There's something to this... Not much, but I could almost detect why people might like this. Proud to say my musical instincts detected very quickly (before checking spotify streams) that Street Joy was the best song on the album and most listened to. I guess the best songs have a feel, a sound and a formula that makes them distinctive. Also Street Joy was a sadder, more gentle song on the album unlike the other songs. Really, this album is a mix of different sounds. The artist is described as a mish mash of indie, jazz, psychedelia, and more. The strongest scent I got off these guys was progressive rock. Was 'Yes' one of their influences? I can certainly hear their sound in White Denim's music. Ultimately, aside from a couple of songs, this sisn't really stick with me. Now and again I heard a melody that sounded good. The vocals sound quite generic, of their time, and are generally weak aside from their place in the song Street Joy. Overall, the album had something to it but is mostly just OK for now. More listens would be needed to get something more out of it.

It was there and then it wasn’t and I didn’t really care.

A very middle of the road 2010s indie rock album. It tries doing a few different things but doesn’t do any of them particularly well so the whole album just ends up being pretty forgettable

Not the most exciting music, but competently done. Low 3.5 stars

I've only heard this band's 2013 album, and I was not that crazy about it. This doesn't really move the needle for me either. It's funny that I mentioned the Grateful Dead in my Skip Spence review yesterday, because this also reminds me of the Dead, but moreso in execution than spirit. It's not terrible, but it's not a style of rock I want from this era of music. "Burnished" and "Street Joy" were probably the highlights. The rest was very meh. 3 stars.

++: Burnished, At the Farm, Anvil Everything, Drug, Bess St., Is and Is and Is +: It's Him!, Street Joy, River to Consider, Keys 7,7/10

Was alright to have on. Had kind of a jam band feel.

This is ok, if very uneven - it doesn’t seem to know if it’s prog-rock, blues-rock, or country-rock and so the listening experience is a little bit all over the place. Not great, not terrible.

blink and you'll miss it

Nice to hear some proper rock and roll back in the queue. It would be easy for me to give this an extra star just for that, but this is a little too jammy for me to love. I'm more of a song guy. I don't see reason to go higher than a . . .

I feel like this band probably pretty much captures the spirit of what I think of as calliope indie or, maybe, carnival indie. I listen to it, and I can almost smell the popcorn and funnel cake. It makes me want to play skee ball. It also sounds a little bit like Yes in certain songs. So...I don’t hate it, but I probably will never listen to this band again.

I’m glad this was on the list since I’ve never heard of this band but liked a fair bit of contemporaneous bands like Grizzly Bear and the Dirty Projectors that mixed prog rock with indie. White Denim introduces some southern rock elements that at times reminds me of My Morning Jacket and even the Allman Brothers. I was really between a 3 and 4 and might regret the score I gave this, but I don’t see myself going back to this a ton.

Passed directly through me leaving little impression

Inoffensive, but mostly forgettable imo

I thought it was fine, not sure what else to say. Didn't really capture me but didn't annoy me. Solid

Fine background music, not transcendant for me. It's pleasant but not moving - sort of boring in the way psychedelic music generally is

Quite a nice discovery, some Travis were really engageons to me.

This was okay. I have no opinion

This might be one that I appreciate more than love. The musical parts are all quite complex, and while it's quite impressive it does make it a bit less accessible. I can appreciate the talent and work, but it's a bit much for me. It doesn't quite match my own musical frequency. That said there's some really nice songs and moments in here. I like the atmosphere that's generated across a number of tracks, and parts of this really take off and hit harder. They're just not that frequent. I appreciate the musicianship, including some of the longer jams. It shows a level of confidence in the music, but it's not 100% for me.

Decent mellow alt rock. Sounded a bit like Illinoise
