Reviews (page 4 of 8)

This album was so enjoyable! From the first 5 seconds of Willow, I was hooked. I thought many of the songs were strong, and there’s a lot of variation between tight songs and open-ended songs. The production is subtle and never overpowering. Some of the transitions between sections were just masterful. It’s a little uneven in the second half… there are just a lot of songs!… but then Evermore happens and I’m like, that’s a great end. Overall enjoyed the natural confidence of this record a lot, as someone who came in expecting things to be much more buttoned-up.

Pretty gooood

I like this, can tell she has spent time working with and listening to The National (which was the main reason I gave this a go when it came out!). I much prefer this side to her, albeit it’s not ever as good as the bands she is trying to sound like (Bon Ivor, National, Iron & Wine, etc). Credit to her for making a record like this - a total change in direction and she does make it her own.

Track 1) willow Track 2) champagne problems Track 3) gold rush Track 4) 'tis the damn season Track 5) tolerate it *Track 6) no body, no crime Track 7) happiness Track 8) dorothea Track 9) coney island (feat. It’s Taylor. Not much more to say!

There are songs on this album (ivy, cowboy like me) that are so breathtakingly beautiful, but overall I can’t say this is a top tier album for me.

This was a pleasant surprise! Pop's not really my bag, but Taylor (and, I guess, Aaron Dessner) sure can write a pleasing melody. Fave track - "tis the damn season", maybe? The title track with the Bon Iver appearance is also rather lovely...

By the time we get to this album, Taylor Swift has been through many changes. She got out from under the thumb of her original management, and has matured incredibly. And it's not just that I'm friends with her bass player, Amos (humble brag), but I do think the music shows her maturity and her willingness to grow far from the place where she started. This album is haunting, well made and has terrific guest vocals. The lyrics are surprisingly powerful. I've listened to it quite a few times prior to Friday, but continue to enjoy it quite a bit.

I am as surprised as the next person at how much I liked this album. Stripped of the over-produced mainstream sound, this showcases that Taylor Swift has actual substance that is masked by her pop song successes. I think she’s a great lyricist. I really liked the vocal harmonies. I heard echoes of Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, and Coldplay (and for those who don’t like those bands, I suppose they wouldn’t like this much either). Solid album IMHO.

I'm not a Swiftie. And the obsession of Swifties can be a bit much at times. But I do have to hand it to Taylor Swift - her knack for reinvention has kept her remarkably fresh throughout her career, and has led her to her best period with the folk pop of "folklore" and "evermore."

evermore is the follow up companion to folklore, both surprise 2020 pandemic albums announced less than 24 hours before their release. evermore came second and it feels ever so slightly less than folklore, like the album formed once the crème de la crème was already packaged into folklore. For me Willow is the only stand out song on evermore, but to its credit, evermore is greater than the sum of its parts. The album, as a whole, forms an essence. I get the whole folksy, forest vibe. The glitzy pop sound sound of Lover (top notch album by the by) is gone, replaced by low key instrumentation. It feels intimate, like an album that should be listened to snuggled up under a fuzzy blanket next to a fire in cabin in the woods. The answer to my question from The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds is answered: yes, there is another album with its title track appearing last. So maybe it’s not as rare as I thought. While not up to folklore’s level, evermore is a very good album on its own. I enjoy Ms. Swift’s pandemic, musical change of direction. The 1001 list includes two Taylor’s Swift albums, both which are solid but are surpassed by similarly styled, better albums. Lover should appear instead of 1989 and folklore should appear instead of evermore. Potato, po-tot-o.

Great album. I really enjoy Taylor's collaboration with Jack Antonoff on folklore and evermore. I wasn't much of her fan before but with this change of style I'm a changed man.

Surprisingly good

Easy to listen to. Definitely some blending but still very pleasant. Good for background on a cool autumnal day with a fire and a stew.

I liked this! Very autumnal feel

Enjoyed this quite a bit

This, and its sister album folklore, was were I first really understood the hype surrounding Swift. Working with Dessner did wonders to her songs; this sounds like an artist finding her true calling and potential. Lyrically this is by far the peak of her career with her storytelling beating her contemporaries by quite a few miles. folklore is more immediately available, containing a few more upbeat songs, but after listening a to both a few times I’m starting to be convinced this is the superior twin by a hair.

evermore is the ninth album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It blends alternative rock, indie folk, and chamber pop genres together to make a lo-fi, escapist, cottagecore experience for the listener. This album is an extension of her eighth album Folklore - that was released five months earlier - because they share similar musical and lyrical styles. Taylor Swift is a mind-blowing songwriter, and it's amazing how easy she can write lyrics to create a story for any instrumentals sent her way. This was the reason for this album, since she continued working on the same musical style that her previous album Folklore was created with, even after finishing up production on it. Swift has likened evermore to be a soft, but moody album for the cooler seasons of fall and winter, while Folklore has a little more pop for the warm seasons of spring and summer. To praise Taylor Swift even more, this album - as well as the previous Folklore - show that she has the ability to switch genres without missing a beat and still come up with a popular album. First it was a transition from country to pop with her album Red in 2012, and now we go from pop to indie folk with Folklore and evermore in 2020. I wouldn't classify myself as a Taylor Swift fan per se, but I can't deny this album was great and I'm excited to see what else is in store for this talented singer songwriter.

T-Swifty slaps

A good album especially the first few tracks and the collaborations but not as striking to me as some of her other records. Still lovely.

Folk, pop. Dulce, agradable, tranquilo.

Really love this version of Taylor. Think I prefer Folklore to this one, but the vibe is one of my favorites

Huge fan of Folklore, so when Evermore dropped I was ecstatic! I don't think it left the same impression as Folklore, though. It's a little more subdued and a little darker in subject matter. If Folklore is wandering into the woods then Evermore is getting lost. Great album though!

Second album is fckin Tay tay. Tizzle mcswizzle. Pleasant on the ears. Applauded for switching up her style which had been the same for like a decade.

This album has several songs I really like (Long Story Short, Evermore) as well as others I can't remember. All in all it reminds me of Charlottesville.

Very chill music. Enjoyed falling asleep to it

Shes the queen for sure, but do we need more than an hour of this?

This is an excellent album that I was not expecting! Last week I got another Taylor album on this list, and the difference in 4 or 5 years of her project "getting. back to her roots or something like that" is working. I still think that this album is quite long, but I'm genuinely curious about the next steps of her career (something that I never believed was possible:-P)

This is the second Taylor Swift album on this list.....and..... I really enjoyed the first one, and that trend continues with this one. I particularly enjoyed the collaboration with The National

I found my enjoyment of this album increasing the longer it went on. The second half in particular is very chilled and lovely. It's not pushing any boundaries, but nice simple songs and melodies with polished but back-to-basics production. I prefer this a lot this to Swift's more showy '1989' album, which is also on this list. It's not aimed at me, but I would happily put this on on a relaxed Sunday afternoon. I wonder if the kids these days know how lucky they are to have Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish when we had to make do with B*witched and Billie Piper? Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: no body, no crime Date listened: 01/07/22

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Willow, No body,no crime

Extremely polished and accomplished and benefitting greatly from expert production (which is a reminder of why at least one and probably multiple records from The National should be in here), this is the work of a maturing artist.

Pretty good honestly.

Favorite song was probably Champagne Problems. The album starts really strong, gets a little forgettable in the middle , but ends with a bang with Bon Iver.

I had already listened to this album prior to starting this challenge, however I have been wanting to listen to this project again for a while soooo I’m glad I had the opportunity to do so. Overall, the album was better then I remember it being. Compared to Taylor’s previous album, Folklore, this one definitely feels more folky and is more geared towards her excellent songwriting. This album feels like her most mature yet and I’m hoping she continues in this direction for her next project. Highlights: champagne problems, tolerate it, happiness, ivy

I still think Evermore and Folklore are mostly neck and neck for me. I definitely come back to this like her other album but for different reasons. This one feels more in tune to her older material like Red but more mature with Taylor's vocal experience.

Well arranged

Truly a lovely album. National guitarists and one of the best country-pop songwriters equals a stunning classic, even if it wasn't created during the pandemic.

A natural progression in her discography. After two very commercial and radio-friendly pop album, it’s nice to see her go to her songwriting roots with nothing but a guitar and piano. If you like the sound of one song, you’ll like them all. It’s more an atmosphere being sold throughout rather than a collection of great songs on an individual levels. It works and its an enjoyable listen.

Although its questionable if this is a must hear, it still is a very good album. This music style is the logical evolution to Taylor's early Country-Pop and she is able to create a very atmospheric experience here. No song is a masterpiece but there are a handful of 4 star songs and overall this album is, although a bit too long, a great listening experience

I do love this album, but not her best one.

I am a swiftie

I might be feeling a bit Swifty.

I’m not a Taylor Swift fan but really liked Folklore and this sister record sequel continues the folky cottagecore thang…

I had heard that Folklore was good but I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. I can't really add more than other reviews have. It was really enjoyable to listen to and there is beautiful depth to Taylor Swifts voice and songwriting. The synergy with her collaborators is spot on, strengthening her style rather than being dominated by something different. Only minus is that some of it sounds like I have heard it before. Probably due to Jack Antonoff having written with so many other artists recently. Not necessarily a bad thing but distracting

She is very talented but this is not really my thing but I have great respect for her.

A good listen but not as good as folklore

7/10 i tend to be pretty critical of Taylor Swift, and while neither the songwriting nor the vocal performance of evermore are outstanding, this album definitely has its charm. The second half especially has some good tunes, and while I found this a bit boring to listen to the production is flawless throughout.

6.5/10

A very good example showing that strong songwriting by an artist can work in any genre. Taylor shows she doesn't have to be bombastically pop to make great pop music. Solid work through and through.

Wasn't expecting too much from this album but ended up feeling pleasantly surprised by it.

Perhaps I overlooked this, in preference to Folklore, but these more gentle songs are real growers

Very simple folk music. Very easy to listen to which can be great at times. It's also very pretty. But it also doesn't knock my socks off at any point, either. It's just solid.

Swift is solid at this point. Each album and move is more refined than the last. A great album, but no hits in my opinion.

Sad me zanima i njen Folklore (album). + willow, happiness, dorothea coney island, ivy, long story short, closure

i like it, her song writing is always impressive

The album starts of really strong with "Willow" and finishes strong with "Evermore". However the middle gets a bit samey for me. I like the new kind of style for this compared to Taylor's previous work, but I wish she went even further with it.

Good song writing that seems to stick to a theme. My only gripe is that a few tracks feel a bit repetitive in subject matter and the album could've done with trimming down a bit but overall an enjoyable listen.

Well - Saturdays seem to be for pop icons now! Hello Taylor Swift. This is quite pleasant. I prefer her poppier stuff, but her gift has always been being a cleverer lyricist than her music lets on, and this more wintry album still lets her do this. There's some great stuff on here, back to back - Tis the Season, Tolerate It and No Body, No Crime are all first class. I really wasn't expecting to rate this album as highly as I did.

4.5 People can say what they want about taylor swift but this album fucks

I don't know how an album this recent made it onto the list, but this and folklore were my pandemic guilty pleasures. I like folklore much more though.

Good music! Oh, it's about dysfunctional relationships? All of it? Still good music!

I feel like there's been a trend for naming songs in lowercase, seems to be a recent thing 🤷 Taylor Swift definitely has a place in my heart, really enjoyed listening to this album, liked the one about murder, and 'tis the damn season' was great

An excellent album. I think Taylor Swift is an excellent song writer and I'm really enjoying this new phase of music, for me it shows a that she is a very good musician. However, this album just isn't as good as Folklore so I'm very surprised that it's on here and Folklore doesn't seem to be.

better than I expected. Enjoyable eclectic sound.

Classic indie album. Quite good with it too, but nothing stands ott it for me on first listen

Better than I was expecting, def better than most of what I've had in the last 40 days of doing this.

Frankenstein Pop! („closure“) Was wirklich reißt: alle Lyrics. Seltsam flirrende 3.7

Swift has always been more than just a singer of vindictive breakup songs, as her detractors say. The sister lockdown albums have "I'm more than what you think" written all over them, and the indie folk sound suits her well. I never thought I'd be a guy who has strong opinions about how Taylor Swift's albums are ranked, but...folklore is better. Best track: Happiness

I was expecting not to like this, but it was surprisingly pleasant.

A pleasant listen, however if you really want to listen to “relationship music” with a C&W sound to them then I think John Mayer has TS licked. Not convinced it should be in the 1001 albums to listen to but what do I know, I’m just a listener

3.5 really! Enjoyed the bon iver duet

Nevermore

Nice songs, but I kept thinking that I was listening to a watered-down version of Phoebe Bridgers or Lizzy McAlpine.

I was honestly kind of waiting for some Tswift to pop up on here. I have been very curious to see how or why she has so many damn fans and every girl and gay goes crazy for the lady. I walked away pleasantly surprised as to how much I enjoyed it. Thats not to say this was anything to write home about in my opinion, very one note across the album, but I guess I see a little bit clearer as to why she is so popular. I think her lyrics are well written, and clever, she's got a great voice, and I can see the lyrics being very relatable to a lot of people. But at the end of the day the music is still like white rice and chicken with salt and pepper. Tswift is like the white bread of music. Its not bad, but also not great. Highly palatable, and very much attainable. I don't think my opinion has changed much on swifties after this, as I don't even think this is one of her popular albums lol... I still kinda lowkey judge people whos only favorite artist is Taylor Swift, or those who only listen to artists similar to Taylor. Like broaden your palette a little bit, there is so much good music out there. Favorite song was Gold Rush, very catchy. The male features caught me so off guard, but were a welcomed change of pace within the sea of sameness amongst all of the songs. Album cover evoked a certain feeling that I found matched the album vibe, which was like cozy, nice, autumn cabin getaway for the girls. I was gonna say she could be more creative with it, but now that I think about it, I actually kinda dig it! Even though its just the back of her head lmfao. 6.8/10

Not quite a three for me but I’ll give her three.

This album really only had 2 or 3 good songs and that is only because they sounded like old Country Taylor Swift stuff. I'll give it a 3.5 because I can see myself going back to those songs.

Notable Textzeile: No crowd of friends applauded Your hometown skeptics called it Champagne problems I get the appeal of hearing the most harmless pop but feeling part of a big movement and of experiencing something allegedly extraordinary.

One of her last “good albums” before she dropped her quality post midnights. This sorta sound fits her voice quite well. This is my 9th album of hers I’ve listened to, and I much prefer the other one on the list over this. I don’t think I can ever get used to Taylor swearing however

Better than I expected and thankfully not much country. She plays it safe and stays inside the margins of popular acceptability.

it's fine, but it didn't seem like anything special? Maybe I'm not Swift enough to get it.

I'm torn between a 2 or 3 rating here. I went into this not expecting much, but always with an open mind. Taylor does what she does well, I have to give her that. It's just the songs all started to sound very samey in terms of the subject matter and the style. I didn't expect the super mellow, sort of stripped back nature that she shows here so that was a surprise, and it was sort of enjoyable in its own way because of this. I would definitely choose this over some of the popular "hits" I've heard from her. Would I listen to it again? I'm not sure - but I feel like it's something you could stick on if the vibe is right. I'll give it a 3.

This started off nice with "willow", "champagne problems", and "gold rush", but it got real bumpy after that. It slowly descended from calming folk with whimsical lyrics to repetition and cringe. Just take "no body, no crime", for example. The title lyrics had to be repeated several times per chorus, and the excitement of the song hinged on the plot twist of a fictional crime story. Then we get to "coney island". Holy. Lord. The male vocalist did an absolutely terrible job. I wanted earplugs for that one. Finally, near the end, I perked up a little with "long story short", but all of that vanished with the atrocious time signature and drum beats of "closure". What a way to drain the life out of an album. Overall it was much too long and used up all of its good songs right at the beginning. There are good songs, just not very many.

Seriously? Again? lol. I'm getting back to back on these Tswift albums. Regardless the definition of milquetoast pop for me although it is elevated with all the indie producers/features.

champagne problems and no body no crime definitely the stands out here everything else was a slog

The contrast between the subtly complex depth of the unplugged melodies coupled with some of the shallowest and cringiest lyrics you'll ever hear make for an incredibly frustrating if also enjoyable listen. If an instrumental version of the album exists, listen to that instead. Or you can tune out the lyrics to still hear Swift's very excellent singing. Also starts to drag with samey filler tracks towards the midpoint. Top tracks: Wllow; No Body, No Crime; Closure

First Swift LP. Had to set my bias aside for this one as this is not something I am predisposed to like. That being said I did enjoy this quite a bit at times. I generally preferred the later tracks, but perhaps that was me getting more accustomed to what I was listening to. Ivy was a highlight. I’m going to land on a 3/5. Pretty good

For a Taylor Swift album it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I'll admit I had preconceptions going in but by the end they were somewhat dispelled. I've said to myself that I wouldn't come back to this one but I kept comparing the album's sound and vibe to phoebe bridgers who I do regularly listen to so maybe there's some bias stuff going on there

Calm, smooth, a lil boring but still poppy

What's with the echo on her voice for the whole album?

I may not be a Taylor Swift fan but this album was pretty decent. Not sure how it would classify as a two star or one star as there are vast amount of albums that deserve that rating but not this one

This should have been Folklore. There's no reasonable argument for including evermore on the list instead of Folklore. Folklore felt like this fun, weird, unexpected experiment. It was clearly a Taylor album but there was something more there. It was exciting to see a popular artist both kind of go back to their roots and also try something so removed from the recent big hits. evermore doesn't have any of that. It's polished and confident in a way that Folklore wasn't, and that's not a positive quality. It feels like another Taylor album. A good one, sure, and there are some great songs on evermore, and it's far better than most of what we got on Midnights or (god forbid) Tortured Poets Department, but Folklore was something special. Out of all the things that irritate me about this list I think this one might irritate me the most.

Second and final Taylor Swift album. My review of 1989 is one of my better offerings, dare I say. Anyways, I'm pretty sure this album marked the period when Taylor Swift really began to hog the limelight throughout the early 2020s. I'm far from an authority on contemporary pop and I'm not at all plugged into celebrity culture, though things appear to have cooled down for Swift throughout the mid-2020s. After her eras tour became the highest-grossing tour ever I haven't really heard much from her and the critical response to her albums appears to have slumped - at least in comparison to where they were at in the early 2020s. Of course, the critical reactions didn't stop her most recent record (which I hadn't even heard of until now) from topping the charts just about everywhere, so perhaps it's just business as usual. I can imagine a lot of people on this site are hostile to this album for the simple reason that it's girly pop. For some inexplicable reason, teen girls and young women enjoying things has always provoked an inconsolable rage from the grown ass man side of the population. I doubt that I will like this album given that I have a big floppy todger in my pants that eviscerates the uterus of every womb that it conquers, though I'd like to preface my review with the fact that I'm a cool male feminist who has a handsome man bun, drinks chai lattes and likes talking about my feelings. I have no prejudice against this album, and this period of Taylor Swift's career was pretty noteworthy regardless of how you slice it. Anyways, I have nothing else to say so I might as well get into this one. Yeah, this was solid. I'm surprised that I had a good time listening to this album when I'm neither a fan of 1989 nor indie folk. Above all else, I commend the songwriting and vocal melodies of this album. While they're admittedly a little samey, the mileage that this album is able squeeze from the rolling vocal hooks of this album is quite impressive. There's nary a performance which fails to hold my attention, though I do admit that the early stretches of this album are generally the more competent and engaging offerings. The instrumentals are also difficult to fault. The soft, well-rounded sound of this album is quite likeable - notably the plucky guitar strings, delicate piano chords and the reverb/ambient synths which fully realise the sound of this album. There was also some variation in the guitars which I found to be interesting. The guitars alternate between your standard folk affair, a more alternative sound and, most interestingly, a soft rockabilly sound. I can't say I've heard that latter sound in my music before. Overall, this was an adept and soothing listen. I tragically don't have a scan of the 2021 book, so I can't consult the entry for this album. Straight to Wikipedia I go. The album was shadow dropped and is a companion release to "Folklore" - her previous album. Expands on the themes of Folklore, notably Swift's isolation as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Taylor collaborated with three indie acts, notably The National and Bon Iver. The album's three singles were released to different radio stations. It was the best-selling alternative album of 2021. Critics were very receptive to this album, though it appears to be slightly less acclaimed than Folklore. It won two awards and was nominated for a few more - notably a Grammy for album of the year. The release of this album in conjunction with Folklore made Taylor Swift the highest-paid solo musician of the year and the highest-paid US musician of 2020. The album has a surprising number of instrumentalists and collaborators for a poppy, indie folk release and was a smash on the charts. The pandemic and close release window appears to have dampened its success a little, though it still topped the charts in ten countries in addition to making the top ten in eleven more. The album has also lingered on the year-end charts for the past six years in a handful of countries, notably the US and UK. I knew that I had a big write-up on my hands for the research section of this review, and that was exactly what I got. Going off of what I can gleam, it seems that Folklore is the bigger release on both a commercial and critical level, whereas Evermore is the more experimental and challenging album. Given that Taylor Swift is known first and foremost for being a record-breaking pop act, I think it stands to reason that Folklore has more of a reason to be on this list than Evermore. For that reason, we're swapping this one out. I switcharoo this inclusion.

Bottom Third of the Eras and little sister to a top third Folklore. But even that, it is still Taylor.

I'm a fan of Aaron Dessner and enjoyed the production, arrangement and playing here. i have nothing against Swifts vocals, they are light and inoffensive. i didnt chime with the themes or lyrics as im not a teenage white girl.

evermore is one of Taylor Swift's folkier projects, and it feels like a conscious effort to achieve a more "mature" sound. I think she's generally successful in this endeavor as well. Songs like willow, gold rush, ivy, and cowboy like me very tastefully transplant Taylor Swift's sound into a more low-key, bespoke sound while maintaining her personality and her writing (for better or worse on some songs, but we'll talk about that in a sec). I also think the songs on here with features are really good. When on her own, there are moments here where Taylor Swift's celebrity and personality and (in my opinion) slightly clunky writing keep me from being fully immersed in this album. But no body, no crime, coney island, and evermore (respectively featuring HAIM, The National, and Bon Iver) provide a counterpoint to Taylor Swift and result in very immersive, pretty, and enjoyable experiences, and are the best songs on the album for it. I'd say some moments I struggle with here are songs like long story short and closure, where the writing feels clunkiest, and where Taylor Swift fatigue sets in the most. But she can definitely write a hell of a pop song, and the aesthetic on evermore makes the album (along with folklore) feel unique in her discography. This was really solid, read my score as a high 3.

This is fine, but I certainly can't say that I love it. While Taylor Swift's music is often catchy, the lyrics just leave a lot to be desired. There are some really tortured metaphors here, "coney island" stuck out to me especially in this sense. Ultimately, this album reminds me of working in a nursing home during the pandemic, which... was not the best time of my life. Favorite track: probably "willow"

Favorite Track: no body, no crime Least Favorite Track: tolerate it

Review - an interesting choice for the list. This album isn't bad. It's very of its era. You can get a lot of flack for saying this, but this is a great example of Taylor Swift being similar to David Bowie. Both have had long careers by looking at what was popular (both commercially and critically) in current music, and incorporating that into their sound. This album is her incorporating that Phoebe Bridgers type of sound, a little folksy, a little indie, but still with her own sound in it. She is not a particularly good lyricist, but I actually find that quite funny - she manages to be the biggest pop star in the world while writing absolute clunkers like "come back stronger than a '90s trend" - gotta respect the hustle. Score - 6.5/10 Need to listen? YES

No hate for Taytay here at all - clearly one of the most influential artists of recent times but not sure this is worthy of "the list". Probably around a 3.5 with The National & Bon Iver helping pull it up from the merely OK

Highlights: Evermore, No Body No Crime, Coney Island and Champagne Problems. 3.8

Much better than expected

Not bad, but not my style. 3/5

evermore was quite a fair bit better than i was expecting. The music had a very similar vibe to that one Fleet Foxes album that i listened to quite a while back. I think that the main thing that is the biggest part i have to talk about is the lyrics because oh boy, do i have opinions on those. There were a lot of points where the lyrics could be incredibly heartfelt but there were several times that for every bit of good lyrics, there were bits of not so good lyrics as well. The vocals are all still very good so that's one thing in this album's favor. I was initially getting quite a few reasons to give this album 4 stars but due to the lyric issues i mentioned above, it got locked to 3. It is still quite a good album and i can see why all the Swifties would want the haters to listen to this album. Best Song: closure Worst Song: cowboy like me Side note: I think its funny that in the song coney island, The featured vocalist (Matt Berninger of The National) sounded like a country singer in that song yet his band does not make country music

I know that rich people have feelings too but I find Taylor's woes to be so hard to see parallels with. I don't find her voice to be terrible but the way she uses it like a slide whistle just doesn't fit the instrumentals at all. Speaking of, I found the instrumentals to be boring and safe. As many risks as Kermit on the log. Just something here that does nothing for me. I don't even see the nuggets that make her career as colossal as it is. Just not for me and that's ok. Favorite Songs: Gold Rush, Coney Island

I'm a Folklore/Evermore girly, but still this is not a 5 stasr album. I'm so very happy it exists though.

'Wreck my plans, that's my man.' Talented & era-defining, yet nondescript & wanting of palpable energy, Swift is not this age's songwriter, she's its v gifted narcissist, its honed employer of the 'lyrical I,' the spokesperson for no one but herself. Rhyming 'brought it' w/ 'applauded' & 'called it' evinces Costello-like skill, & she obviously has a knack for pop melodies, but for an hour I didn't care much for what she had to say next. 'In our history, across our great divide / There is a glorious sunrise.' No doubt, the country & the blues traditions teach you to sing w/ personal intent. W/ those deep & clear country roots, Swift gives you the personal w/o the personality. She is no Patsy, Tammy, Dolly, or Loretta, & yeah, she's no Olivia Rodrigo. All blank.

(64/100)

folklore and evermore hit me in an unexpected way when they came out. I liked a couple Taylor Swift songs before them but I never really gave any album a full listen, but considering the 2020 of it all it felt like I may as well, and they ended up being pretty good. This one is highlighted by willow and no body, no crime, but a lot of the tracks didn't really stand the test of time and became pretty forgettable.

My rating 3.2. I liked Folklore more but to put out 2 double length albums in such a short time is impressive.

Not sure why this was so critically acclaimed when it came out. It touches on the stylistic influence of bon iver/Sufjan etc but never quite reaches their emotional peaks and comes off as a generic top 40 attempt at something more authentic. Norman fucking Rockwell was much better for this style that ended up more unique and interesting

Familiar with the pop stuff (eras?) never listened to her mellow stuff. It's alright, sets a decent mood, makes me want to check out the national and bon iver. Find her lyrics to get old, but I suppose that would require prior knowledge

Do you know what? Once you get past the annoying ubiquity of Taylor Swift, this isn't a bad album.

I think this might be her strongest front-to-back album..... she is far from one of my favorite artists but I think the songwriting and production and performance is here and it's more varied than I remembered it being. Maybe in like 20 years when we're (hopefully) not still over-saturated with her it'll be easier to listen .

It's very pretty, but its missing some bite. The songs have that pop sheen that takes away from it for me

Really liked the first part of the album but by that switched at the HAIM song. Ended up being bored for the rest except for one or two tracks. Also, album was too long. Overall, 3.5 stars

This album that proves TS is a proper song writer. Written in the middle of lockdown and collaborating with the national and Bon Iver is incredibly brave for an artist fames for accessibility, Melodys and pop hits. That said, TS again proved her inability to edit herself in both obsession that everyone is against her and in picking out the best 12 tracks that would make a far superior album.

Lol? Folklore better, but what swiftee put this here?

2.75 I’m rounding to a VERY generous 3 because I think the second half of the album is generally much stronger than the first. I’m no Swift hater, I mean, I don’t get down with the cult of personality but I’m also not gonna pretend that 1989 isn’t one of the greatest pop albums of our lifetimes. But i don’t really do deep dives on her discography, so I had never heard this one, since it doesn’t really have any big hits off of it. It’s one of her “serious” works. Mostly what that amounts to is telling she mainlined Lana Del Rey before recording this album. It’s missing a lot of what makes Taylor, well, Taylor. Those absolutely irresistible earworm choruses. There’s a lot of tuneless songs here with especially cringy lyrics. Again, I think the second half of the album (from about “Dorethea” on) locks in and gets a lot better. The National duet is strong and the album ends on its best note - The genuinely lovely titular “evermore” with Bon Iver. I’m all for giving Tay Swift another entry on this list that’s not 1989, but why not Folklore? Or Red? Or even Midnights? This one feels like an odd choice.

2.6 I'm trying to like Taylor Swift. I think when I was younger, I used to hate any act that was too mainstream, typically "I'm different" teenage wankery. Missed out on many good acts and artists because of this. I'm now at the stage where I actively tell myself to not write things off and give artists/bands a chance. Onto Taylor. I, probably like everyone, know people who are complete obsessed with her. Like way over the top. So she must be pretty good, must speak to people on a deeper level. However, no matter how many times I try, I still dont really get it. This album, summarised into a one-word review, is Boring. Completely dull. I don't really care about her background so I'm not too fussed about reading the lyrics. So based purely on the music, the vibes and the lyrics, it's boring AF. There is only one moment where it sounds like it's getting going, in Long Story Short. And then the spark goes out straight away. Still searching for the answer.

I really wanted this to be a 4, but it wasn't. I know I've heard a few songs from this. I recognized willow. Taylor has a nice voice with a lot more potential than she uses. I appreciate the actual instrumentals. With that said, the songs all seemed about the same. A couple were in a minor key and they were able different topics, but I could hardly tell when one song ended and the next began. Musically, everything was performed well, but the writing was done of the cheesiest I've heard in a long time. This is my favorite T Swizzle album that I've heard, but that is a low bar to clear. Also, it's diabolical to title a sappy breakup song "happiness". And I don't get the trend of not using capital letters in song titles.

5 - AVERAGE

This album is a whole mood. I think I could rate this album higher if I was feeling the same vibe, had I gotten this album in the dead of winter perhaps.

This was my first time listening to an entire Swift album, and although I didn’t love it, I’ll say it exceeded my expectations. There were some parts that I genuinely enjoyed, like the intro to “happiness” (although by the end of the track it started to feel like a more generic pop song). The quality of the songwriting varied a lot, but there were at least enough interesting vignettes to keep me engaged throughout the listen. This one’s right on the line, 2.5 stars.

I judged an album by its cover. I thought this would be like nails on a chalkboard. It wasn't. However, after the first 4 tracks the rest felt like they blended into this bland sameness that I expect from Taylor Swift. It's always cool when an artist can release two albums in one year, but part of me thinks the quick turn around between evermore's predecessor (Folklore, released in July 2020) and evermore itself (released in December of the same year) makes me think this is some kind of cash grab. Ok, taking off my tinfoil hat now...

One of my two favourite Taylor Swift albums, would give it 3.5 if I could but since I can’t and wouldn’t give it 4 stars I give it 3.

I don't consider myself a Swifty by any means but I do enjoy her music and respect her as prolific singer/songwriter. Frankly, she deserves to have more than 2 albums when the October 2026 edition of the book comes out. I can't say for sure if I've listened to it in it's entirety before but this one was not that great and my 3 rating is generous....this could be a 2 almost x The production just feels a lot more different than her other albums. Maybe that was a result of being on lockdown but it's like a coffeehouse, moody/artsy vibe and just not really my thing. If anything, "Champagne Problems" is the only song I really liked on there.

Good vocals. Fun album

I don't really get why she is so big. It is very bland pop to the point people need to remind me what she done. Even if I hated her music I would at least remember some of her track. This is not bad but it is not amazing or revolutionary. sure, she have a cultural impact but I don't really feel like the music is a part of that. her music was probably just played the right time for a lot of women who could relate to her and built a personality cult over her. Also this album came out 2020 it is not even her most recognised album... but Avicii's album that changed a whole genre and gave rise to the EDM era is not included. in Sweden we have a arena in his name even...

this whole album blended together for me. not in a good or bad way, it just all sounds like the same song.

Not as good as Folklore, but pleasant. She doesn't have much range though.

I feel about Taylor Swift exactly as I do about Bruce Springsteen: I like everything about them except those damn songs. This is true nowhere more than here, where without benefit of elaborate orchestration, we are forced to confront the fact that they are basically sing-song chants. I tried, really I did, but if you ignore the lyrics (which I nearly always do) there's just no song there. And while I get why 1989 is on this list, this one is a total mystery.

I know a couple of these songs from when Claire forced us to watch the eras tour movie. I liked this album. Ive listened to her last two albums when they came out and they were truly dreadful, so this was a pleasant surprise. It's nice to hear her sing songs that actually work for her voice. A lot of the time it sounds like she's trying too hard, but here she sounds like she's in her element. Shame it didn't stick. 3.5

Not enjoyed a Taylor album since 2017's 'reputation' cause I like her poppier, livelier songs... if I want folky vibes I'm not listening to Taylor sorry lol. I like 'gold rush' & 'no body, no crime'. Taylor sounds 10000% better when she sings in lower register, I usually like high-pitch female vocals but she just doesn't have the voice for it. Worked well as mindless background music ig??

My first Taylor Swift album on this list, and it's more folk and introspection than pop. She writes and delivers lyrics well and is obviously a talented performer and artist, though her vocal range is somewhat limited.

Not my jam, as they say. But it was interesting as I've never listened to Taylor Swift before. Songs of heartbreak, nostalgia, homecoming, breakups, murder, longing... quite dark in places. A bit haunting. She has a pleasant voice and I'd much rather hear this than 90% of the dance pop that is currently trendy. At least here we have actual songwriting. Better than expected.

The best Taylor Swift has to offer. Still think Taylor Swift is painfully mediocre.

It's ok.

ok, today I listened to my very first Taylor Swift album. until today had only heard various singles. and I came away enjoying this listen. enjoyed the more stripped down sound, darker/more melancholy lyrics. and I will give her credit-she can tell a story. not sure I'd seek this out again, but would be ok hearing it in background.

meh. Same old stuff.

Like it better than I thought, but still lean more towards her more pop-driven albums.

Favorite track: champagne problems other picks: willow, evermore

Probably her best album.

This is an easy listening (not genre, descriptive) album of minorly edgy pop songs. Her voice is nice and smooth as always and whoever produces her albums did a good job of hiding any auto-tune (if there ever really was any to begin with, despite what people are constantly harping on), but none of the songs really grabbed me like they did with her more radio oriented stuff. There's nothing on here that's an earworm I think. I think that ultimately this an album that she wanted to make vs her record label wanted her to make, and that's a good thing. I just don't really think it's great or noteworthy. It's perfectly fine, music for every day stuff that can easily fade in to the background. Lyrically it says a lot more than the average pop album, on the strength of telling a story and literally the amount of words. It's a bit melancholy and not abrasive despite having plenty of swear words, which I found pretty funny given her reputation. That's a lot of words from an old man about an album for young women. It's fine, it's pleasant musically, it has nothing to do with me really.

I found this rather gloomy and dragging during a bright, sunny day but, driving home in the dark later, it clicked and made more sense. It's a downer but there's a certain richness to it.

A pretty good pop album with a little bit of an indie feel. The interesting thing to me is that of the two indie-adjacent albums that she released in 2020, I think Folklore is much better than this. Oh well, not my list I guess.

Slower and folkier than her other work that I've heard. Not a huge fan of that style of music, but songwriting made this palatable.

Ikke dårlig. Ikke spennende.

Both Taylor and her fans can be a bit much, but we're here to judge music, not people. Taylor is capable of writing great pop music (see Red and 1989). And then the year 2020 happened. She released two very good albums that year (and I think the COVID seclusion probably helped.) Set aside whatever you think of Taylor or the fanbase: this is a good album. The predecessor, Folklore, is better, however ....aaaand I see that Folklore is not on the 1001 list. Boooo. It's Taylor's best album, and it didn't even make the list. SMH. I'm almost tempted to round this album up to 4 stars to cover the omission of Folklore.

I happily listened to it once. evermore is quite pretty and was arranged, produced, and recorded very well. I've always had more respect for Taylor Swift than a lot of other pop stars. As popular as her music is, ultimately, she's a very accessible and marketable singer-songwriter. Also, I'm not the audience for this music, but I feel like Swift is authentic and sincerely connects with her audience despite her almost untouchable stardom. This album, I read, was the second of two albums that represented a pivot for Swift into acoustic production. It sounds to me like she had something to say that needed a different, more mature approach, so she sought that out. That was the courageous move. I'd never listened to a Taylor Swift album before this. I've already deleted this one from my library, but I'm glad to have heard it, and I get why so many other people connect with it. Three stars.

Thoughtful, pensive, soft Swifty is not my favorite Swifty. I like scorned angry pop rocking Swifty.

It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly good. Had some nice arrangements but some of the lyrics are very shallow. Biggest pop star in the world??

Middle of the road-folkpop. Bäst när The National-sångaren Matt Berninger kommer in, vilket kanske säger något. Svag trea.

I only know Taylor Swift’s music from the handful of popular hit songs that would’ve come across my radar, and even that is minimal. One of the rare newer albums on this list and a reason I wanted to do this, to discover things I would never put on myself. That drum machine beat on a lot of it makes it sound generic pop music sometimes. Early on and Champagne Problems is one I particularly liked. That’s a really good ballad. It all feels somewhat generic soft rock/singer songwriter/or pop style of music. But there’s a catchiness to a lot of this, even though it’s a slower album. Some lyrically interesting songs. And it seems deeper than typical “pop” music. There’s certainly a sound behind a lot of the slower songs too where it works well. But something about the sound makes me wish it was less produced and more raw. They’re interesting songs though! I can’t say I really dislike it all. One gripe is a lot of it is slower and doesn’t seem to have a lot of variety in the sound. It’s also a few songs too long. It doesn’t feel like it needs to be 15 songs and an hour long. Overall, I’m somewhere between a 2 and 3. I don’t think it does enough to get me excited to make it a 3. Cut the bloat, make it 40 minutes long and this is probably an easy 3 from me. Feeling generous today so went up.

Imo, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 the best Taylor Swift album. A lot folksier and personal than her other works I'm familiar with. I love "Champaign Problems" in particular.

Not my favourite Taylor Swift album, but there are a few beautiful yet wistful songs.

I’m bored!!!!!!

I like folklore better, and I like 1989, Red, Lover, Fearless, and Midnights better than both of the pandemic albums tbh. That being said, both the pandemy albums have grown on me a bit. When this came out, we were in the throngs of the pandemy and looking for anything happy and this one was all droning sad songs (shit, she brought Bon Iver on the first one (in a song I love) and then Haim and The National into this album, how much sadder can you get?). They have absolutely aged well. But I need bops from her, personally. Anyway. 3.

5/10… melancholy / sad pop / *2020

I think my biggest issue with Taylor Swift is how she’s ALMOST a good writer, but she tends to get in her own way with really clunky or even BAD lyrics. I come back stronger than a 90’s trend in the same song that starts with a strained metaphor about like…a clipper carrying wine? I really like Champagne Problems! The song is nice, the topic is unique! Why is the a One For the Money and an out of place fucking crazy?!!!? It’s not! Good! Why does Gold Rush! A wonderful song! Mention an Eagles shirt and use the phrase contrarian shit! It just detracts from what could be WAY better. And I think that’s part of her appeal? Like she’s heady and cool but occasionally dips into more relatable quirks, and I can totally see and understand that! I just…don’t like it. I think it’s crazy she has as many explicit tags as fucking Slipknot. Anyway I like the Haim song. The National song was good until she shits the bed with a simile that’s comparing their love to the mall before the internet.

willow 3/5 champagne problems 3/5 gold rush 3/5 'tis the damn season 2/5 tolerate it 2/5 no body, no crime (feat. HAIM) 2/5 happiness 3/5 dorothea 3/5 coney island (feat. The National) 3/5 ivy 3/5 cowboy like me 3/5 long story short 3/5 marjorie 3/5 closure 3/5 evermore (feat. Bon Iver) 2/5 Overall Album 2.73

Not bad. Not my favorite by her by any stretch.

No Body, No Crime is as close to Before He Cheats as we are going to get during this project, isn't it? That's a shame... I was surprised how slow, boring and long this album is. Isn't Taylor Swift the undisputed top pop star for this generation? And this is what her music sounds like? At least there isn't a song about Travis Kelce's member though. also, is she the reason kids these days don't know how what words are supposed to start with a capital?

I like Willow and Champagne Problem but the rest is meh. I do see how this could be an amazing album if you are going through a break-up, one of those ones where you sing along while crying and driving in your car. However I’m not in that frame of mind. I will say this Taylor has just got better since this album

Expected to dislike this but I really thought it was good. Expected the production to be good but the actual tune- smithery was excellent, it had more depth than I expected so if this is what teenage girls are listening to nowadays it’s way better than the boyzone of the 90s and 00’s in my day. I wouldn’t seek it out but if it was put in I would be perfectly happy. 3.3

This type of music isn't really made for me. But there's no doubting the talent here. I much prefer her songs when things are a bit more stripped back without so many layers. The duet at the end was a highlight.

-the second Taylor album i’ve gotten on here and very different from 1989. idk why she abandoned this direction for the corporate slop she’s been producing today, it was some of her best work. surprised they included this one instead of Folklore though -some very cringy songwriting moments as expected but overall this was decent, i like the production and instrumentation too -Favorites: gold rush, no body, no crime

Well produced and easy to listen to, but it doesn’t really do anything for me.

Quite good

Like, it’s okay. My favourite of her music but I’ll really only listen to it on one specific August morning.

Leggero

she makes good stuff

Slow country pop songs. Not offensive but nothing interesting

Taylor's Covid era.

Oikeastaan tämähän oli aika hyvä. Kertakuuntelulla biisit eivät kauheasti erotu toisistaan. Positiivinen yllätys kuitenkin.

Best Track - "Coney Island"

Not my favorite of hers, but there are some solid lyrics here and there. “Tolerate It” has haunted me from the first time I heard it.

“Everything popular is wrong.” - Oscar Wilde

Pleasant sounding and a nice vibe, but I never found any song particularly interesting or catchy.

"Evermore" is your typical modern pop album. It's definitely overrated, in my opinion. I'm not sure how this album has changed music as a whole in 5 years. The songs on "Evermore" are pretty good, hidden from the radio stations. It's not as bad as others say it is. 3 stars for "Evermore".

It’s fine. No better, no worse. A lot of the songs sound the same. I think we are supposed to feel that this woman who has attained Arnold Schwarzenegger/Beatles level fame has written this “oh so intimate” album to express her deepest feelings, but it’s hard to see this as more than a vanity project. Some of the songs contain nice melodies and the backing music is not offensive (a little repetitive though), so I can’t give too low a score. Yeah, as I said, it’s fine. Not the best album I have heard recently, but far from the worst.

As someone who has never been a fan of Taylor Swift really at all, besides a few of her songs here and there, I was surprised by how much I liked this album. When she doesn't insist on charting or having the biggest pop song in the world, she can actually write some great folk/alt songs, as she proved on this and Folklore. I think the album is a bit too long and the songs start to blend together in the back half, but some really standout songs on here that I would listen to again. Top Songs: willow, no body, no crime, evermore

I don’t think I was even supposed to listen to deluxe but it’s too long. how much can we beat on the same themes. Some songs kind of big bops though. Like the one about revenge. I remember listening to this during the pandemic. Woah how much time has passed. Some of these words have more meaning to me now, for better or for worse.

This is the newest album I've had so far. It is way better than I expected, but I didn't expect much from one of the most overrated artists of all time. She's a good singer, and the lyrics are surprisingly good, if slightly one-note(seriously, Taylor, the whole forlorn love thing is a bit played out at this point). The album's subdued, melancholy vibe works surprisingly well. It's far less annoying and awful than pre-1989 Taylor is, which is something that I'm very thankful for. It's not flawless; no album needs to be an hour long, and the repeated lyrical content grows tiresome despite their general quality being surprisingly high for Taylor. I have listened and will listen to better albums and worse albums, but perhaps none will have changed my perspective on an artist as much as this one. If you had told me a year ago that I would listen to and enjoy a Taylor Swift album, I would have laughed in your face and called you insane. Now, here I am, enjoying one and thinking it's a good record.

I'm sorry. I've tried my best and I just don't understand the hype around Taylor Swift. The plot of every single lyric being a broadly old fashioned take on pining after a man. The grab at some kind of "artful" with the all lower case. The attempt to reference otherart and culture but the insistence on misunderstanding the meaning of the road less travelled! Lol. The melodies and vocals are fine but not "most powerful artist currently on planet earth" good. I just don't get it. Sidebar: is this the only bon iver entry on the list? A tragedy if so. 😭

Great Taylor album, average in world ranking

I have nothing against her, she's clearly very talented, highly respected and deserving of all her success, but I find her music to be incredibly generic. It does very little for me. It's easy to listen to but there's nothing in this album, nor her entire catalogue, that strikes me as being anything beyond a 3/5.

for at least 2 years, "1989" didn't leave a girlfriend's car radio. I'm not sure I know anything off this album. "willow" has over a billion streams, so that's something. Im not sure I agree with the "experimental" praise of the Wikipedia review, given the producers and features on this record. That being said, im enjoying this album.

Favourites: 1. No Body, No Crime 2. Willow 3. Champagne Problems Least Favourite: Cowboy Like Me

There’s not much here that we haven’t heard already from the likes of Fiona Apple or Tori Amos. But I actually mean that as a compliment, even though her voice doesn’t have the range of those other two. On the whole I liked this more than I thought I would. But I would have liked it better had it been 20 minutes shorter. Because after a while each track sounded like the one before it. Rounding down for overstaying its welcome.

The music is pleasant to listen to, but there is something cookie-cutter about the songs. Less dance music than 1989, yet that sound is still embedded in this one.

Such lament! She's a good singer, not sure of her range, though, on this album. The songs seem rather formulaic, loaded with what seems like faux sincerity to me. But I'm clearly not the target demographic.

Pretty, but bland

With as much as Tswift has been shoved down our throats the past decade, I'd never heard of this album. There were probably other more important things happening that year. Is this an all time great though? This album? Out of all of her stuff? Why? (Side note, this is my first Tswift encounter in this project and now I'm sure that her entire discography will be on this list because if this album is, surely all her others will be, right?) Anyway, these songs are mostly Taylor monologing to some quiet music. It's not really folky, it sounds incredibly produced. Calling any of this "indie" is just laughable, but sadly this is apparently what indie means these days. Songs themselves are all just... fine. All slow with spoken lyrics that always felt to me like Swift was trying to cram as many words into each song as allowable to still stay somewhat in time with the music. Sometimes less is more. Swift sticks to her breakup/love/longing for home/nostalgia shtick. There's just nothing new or particularly exciting here. I dont really enjoy wallowing in self pity or bad memories, but maybe that's just me? I have an incredibly hard time empathizing with Taylor on any level. The length of the Wikipedia article on this album shows how much smoke we collectively blow up Taylor's ass. I didn't identify with any of these songs, and thats kinda important if the main focus of your album is the lyricism. Standout songs on this listen were "long story short," "marjorie," "evermore" and my favorite was "closure" - the only really musically intriguing track I came across; I really liked that discordant drum machine. I actually think the back half of this album is much stronger than the front. I'm not the target audience for this album. It's purely fine, easy listening. It's got some nice lyrics and some nice arrangements, but that's it. Let's not pretend it's groundbreaking or influential. I do like a lot of Swifts older stuff, but this isn't really something I'd put on again. Evermore hovers somewhere in the 2-3 star range. Nothing's wrong with it, it's just not exciting.

"no body no crime" is a banger. The rest is...fine? Nothing jumps out to me but perfectly fine production, writing, composition, etc

I quite like Taylor Swift but this is pretty bland stuff on the whole Not bad at all but not memorable either Can’t hate it but a long way from loving it A generous 3

In the “don’t get it camp”. I respect the hustle, definitely impressed by the volume of songs, impressed all around! That said, gun to my head it’s all pretty mediocre and predictable. The cadence of her melodies and the subject matter mostly. I think Tim Dillon said it best “Taylor Swift is a incredibly mediocre talent… she’s the perfect talent for our dying country because we’re not great. We thrive on mediocre bullshit, we all love nostalgia because we pray every day for a comet to wipe us out because we know it’s over.”

I definitely don't get the Taylor Swift mania, but I also don't think she's terrible. This is pretty good, but feels pretty forgettable. I could also think of plenty of music of this genre that I prefer (e.g. the Bon Iver feature is my favorite part of this album). This also might be an album of hers that's closest to my taste, so I'll consider this my TSwift ceiling. Not a ringing endorsement

Folklore bedre

It's not that I don't like this record, but I think it's worse than Folklore and doesn't have as much to say as some of her other records. The style is a great continuation of folklore, but it feels like a B-side. 3+

5/10 Er, it's ok? It's a mediocre pop album - I guess it's inclusion will be an interesting curio in 20 years when people will think, "Hmm, so this was what it took to be the biggest star in the world - how odd".

I was honestly expecting not to enjoy this, or at the very least find it boring, however Taylor Swift proves that she has the writing chops to produce an album that has genuine moments of brilliance. Whilst it dips at times, the overall package is one that's quite enjoyable.

++: gold rush, tolerate it, no body, no crime, happiness, Coney Island, marjorie, closure +: willow, champagne problems, 'tis the damn season, ivy, cowboy like me, evermore +-: dorothea, long story short 7,6/10

It’s nice, but just that. Low 3/5

On Evermore Swift and Dessner deliver a second helping of sensitive, twee folk pop. Lyrically it is not as strong as Folklore, with some of the more overt efforts at memorable storytelling resulting in lyrics declared cringe at birth. However its successful in capturing that same breathy, patient, passionate approach. Its a gentle hour that moves at a reasonable pace with some welcome features. I do find it surprising that this album ranks so highly among beard stroking music fans in comparison to forward thinking and impactful records like the lesser rated 1989. While I prefer my Taylor Swift a bit more pop-tastic, especially considering how oversubscribed the field of folk pop is, I like that this duo of LPs contribute to the fact that her career successfully spans country rock, folk and synthpop. Its this variety that keeps fans coming back.

My first Taylor Swift album. I guess I get it. I can see where lots of sad girls would be really into this. It's pleasant enough to listen to. But that lilting cadence of hers does wear thin after awhile -- and then once you get into "contemporary female singer-songwriter" mode when the album finishes....let's just say you won't be confusing any of this with Joni Mitchell...

I hope this is good because I sincerely don't want to listen to TS right now:/ It was fine, very not offensive. 3/5

I've always been pretty indifferent to Taylor Swift. This album was pleasant enough, but what shocked me was the fact that I've never heard any of these songs. I feel like Taylor Swift is popular enough that I would hear her everywhere, and yet all of these were new to me. It's got me wondering why this album in particular is on this list.

I have nothing against Taylor Swift but I prefer her more upbeat songs as opposed to this slow melodic album. 3.5

The lyrics are pretty cheesy, but there’s a few solemn and sincere moments throughout. The production’s pretty good for the most part, and I really enjoyed the instrumentation. It sets a tone that’s fairly consistent throughout. I think my favorite track was actually one of the bonus songs. The rest didn’t really get me. I was excited to hear Bon Iver on evermore, but somehow his appearance was what ruined the song for me. Okay album.

Slightly disappointed with this album. Definitely some Taylor Swift moments but not quite the heavy hitter that I expected from this era of her career. Still worth a listen

Not bad I find her lyrics to be rich but then she seems like this stoic figure reciting them.

Change of pace here for Tay Tay, decent album with some good collabs

I remember when Folklore came out and I was decently surprised by how solid it was for a new Taylor Swift album, but when this album dropped I felt like I had enough Taylor for the year lol. Yeah, it’s good, probably better than Folklore, but in today’s Showgirl era and her unrelenting thirst for even more popularity, I’m kinda fatigued of hearing her.

This is my first Taylor Swift album. Perfectly acceptable pop music that does a good job of varying sounds amd themes.

Interesting album. My expectation was, that it would be terrible. Someone, who is able to sell so much and be so popular normally does not do good music. Simple, easily accessible, not any surprises and "nice" to listen to music but not good in a musical sense. But the music is not so bad. Partly ok to listen to. Not really anything special, everything is as smooth as possible, everything is nice but it is not terrible and not really bad. You might even be able to listen to the album a second time.

It's so sad being a billionaire with a banjo

Favorite tracks: Tis The Damn Season, Ivy, Long Story Short, Closure. First, to get it off my chest: I think Taylor Swift is a bad lyricist but great with melodies. Overall a mediocre artist with a powerful PR machine. This ~era~ included. Regardless, she's a significant presence in music history, so I get why something from her needs to be on the list, and this is as good a pick as any. My actual review of evermore: I liked some songs, didn't like others. Pretty much how it goes for me and TS! The music was strong, but I found the lyrics to be hit or miss - too winking for something that's trying so hard to be elevated and artistic. A 3 feels right to me. Not terrible, not unpleasant, but I think there are other albums that do this better and don't contribute to a billionaire's ego.

It was okay. A chill, folk/soft rock album. Certainly not bad but I don't know what makes it great.

Undoubtedly a slow burner. Had heard the album before and thought it was ok. With repeated listens the layers are uncovered. What seemed rather bland and repetitive does have depth. The writing is strong, the singing less so.

Taylor Swift gets a lot of shit just for being popular. This is a pleasant listen, it is quite good lyrically, she has an enjoyable voice and although the backing is quite sparse it is enjoyable. I happen to be a fan of Bon Over and The National and their inclusion on the album is obviously great, but their musical influence seems to have made a wider impact on the album too. I would of course, rather listen to them but this album has good value.

If I wanted to listen to The National, I'd listen to one of their albums. No idea why this is here instead of Folklore, which is far superior. That said, there are some real gems on here (Willow, Tis the Damn Season, and personal fave Marjorie), but I can only muster a 3.5, rounded down because she doesn't need my stars lol.

Inte alls dåligt.

I respect that Taylor mixes up each album. But there was little to keep me engaged. Nothing overtly catchy, a massive break up vibe and that weird song about murder didn't really make my flight to any faster. Was pleasant to do a sudoko to. 3 stars.

This is album is like the time you went on a skiing trip with your family and rented a log cabin for accommodation. During the day on the slopes, you’d all gone your separate ways for most of the time. Dad likes cruising on the blue square lines. Not too challenging, but tricky enough to make sure he hasn’t lost his skills. Your sister also sticks to the blues, but she’s trying to look cool in front of any hot single guys, so she breaks away from Dad. You fancy yourself a bit of a hotshot, so you’re taking your snowboard to the gnarliest looking black diamond run. Surely everyone will notice you, and talk amongst themselves about that cool guy that carved those slopes like a pro. Mum doesn’t really ski since she hurt her back, so she stays in the cafe and looks after everyone’s bags while reading her book and sipping hot chocolates. Anyway, the day is done now and you’re back at the cabin. There isn’t a tv, but there is a deck of cards. Tired from the day’s skiing and boarding, you play a few rounds of five hundred and drink some mulled wine that mum prepared. Weirdly, your realise that while the four of you are very different individuals, you can always sit around and have a yarn over a commonly appreciates theme.

Did she admit to killing someone? And how is there a Taylor album with no songs I've ever heard? I just assumed by being alive and visiting any store you'd have heard all of Taylors singles. It was ok, some interesting lyrics and music, but it left me wanting more

The involvement of the Dessner brothers and Matt Berminger is usually a sign of quality for me. I like both the lockdown folk adjacent records Taylor produced but equally can see why she moved back to a more pop sound subsequently as it does feel like she's hitting a certain formula as the record goes on. Best track Willow

Unlike most men I don’t have a need to distance myself from Taylor. PERFORMATIVE MALE THRESHOLD BREACHED. Ah. She’s lowkey cringe. But I liked willow and champagne problems and closure and long story short and I laughed at dorothea. Good Taylor album. Quite country. I had willow from the start actually.

Not as familiar with her later stuff but I thought this was not too bad.

Pretty nice.

not as poppy as I expected. edgier. boyfriend-fkd-me-over songs. collaboration with Haim. would i listen again? maaaaaaybe? i was humming that no body, no crime song and of course i have shake it off favorited. so ok yeah i'll give it three stars.

I appreciate Taylor Swift's versatility (and the hand of producer Aaron Dessner of the National), but this is repetitious—certainly thematically, but also sonically. Maybe it's my age, but I get bored when an album is so focused on relationship woes, which is probably why I like "Marjorie" more than most of the other songs. "No Body, No Crime" is a fun diversion, and of course "Champagne Problems" is quintessential TS. But when it comes to evermore, I'm like track five: I tolerate it.* * - I actually don't mind this, but couldn't resist the zinger.

I am definitely not the audience for such an overexposed and unavoidable artist like her, but, for the most part, I enjoyed this album. It is a folk-lite singer songwriter album with some nice contributions from HAIM, The National, and Bon Iver. It's all OK but I wouldn't listen again and I still think she is overrated and overexposed. Does she really need a frickin movie for every release or tour? Do we need to see her and be reminded of her wherever we look?

Meh. Not terrible. Just not really my thing.

I will begrudgingly admit to have enjoyed this album. It's a cozy, warm blend of her country roots and more recent pop sound, without any of the pretentiousness that would follow on her following records.

I feel like Taylor Swift was put on this earth to pump out album after album of three-star-esque music.

evermore is a warm sweater on a cold fall night. high school football games, campfires, cider mills and pumpkin patches - this album reeks of it all. however, is such a new album necessary, considering Switft's catalog? good listen, list worthy? maybe 3/5

pleasant, but not memorable. the lyrics feel like they have been written to be dissected for clues rather than to express an emotion or a moment

Previously rated: #256 - 1989 (3/5) ******************** Album #932 I figured 1989 was on here as sort of an obligation because of how massively popular Taylor Swift is. But here is another one, and it’s fairly recent (5 years ago). This one is more lowkey, subdued pop than 1989. Eh, it's totally fine, OK stuff. Not annoying like more recent stuff I've heard of hers.

blondie can sing but she can't always write interesting songs

This is a good album, but my only complaint is that the songs are all very similar. For that reason it is a 3/5 for me.

Enjoyed Dorothea

My significant other loves Taylor Swift so I have heard this album many times. It's not bad, probably some of my favorite of her works. I am honestly not a fan of type of music and had it not been for her I would never listen to it.

I liked this way way less than I thought I remembered I would Best Song: Coney Island (shout out The National) Rating: 5/10 Stars: 3

I wasn't blown away by it, but it was good.

Kills me to rate a Tay Tay album as three, but it's unfortunately just as dull as the first time I listened to it. But it's Tay Tay, so a solid 3.

Taylor Swift songs are best listened to one at a time.

Pretty fine! That is admittedly how I feel about most of swift's stuff. There are some songs I like by her, but by and large everything is pretty fine.

I'm never quite sure what to make of Taylor Swift's music. I think ultimately, I'm just outside of her target demographic. None of her lyrics resonate with me, so they just come off as pedestrian at best and outright hokey at worst. The music on this album was pleasant, a nice folk-pop backing with occasional country and Americana touches, but also nothing particularly special to my ear.

I found the songwriting to be lovely to be quite honest. I hear her lyrics range from ok to straight stinkers; personally I have a bad case of lyric deafness so I didn't really notice that problem (though I guess I'm also missing out on half the appeal of her music lol) I'm at least glad to finally have a sound to put to her name! Standouts: gold rush • evermore

Helt okej Taylor swith

Doesn't sound that special, just a bit more stripped down. Similar vocals and subject matter. It's fine.

I wasnt familiar with any of the songs on this album, despite having heard many Swift songs before. I enjoyed a few, but overall the entire album was a little too similar in sound, tone, and subject. The songs all sort of blended together after a while. Overall- not bad. 2.5/5

An interesting Swift entry because none of these feel like they got a lot of radio play - is this her Nebraska?

A very cozy and intimate sounding album, with lots of reverb, piano and acoustic guitar. It's a bit too melancholy and slow for me though and I really don't like the drum machine. The stand out track was No Body No Crime, although maybe that's just because it's the only one with actual drums.

This is ok to listen to, but it's nowhere near 1989. Willow is probably the best song on here

Fav: No Body, No Crime (Feat. HAIM) Least Fav: Coney Island (Feat. The National) Yeah fair enough, massive improvement from 1989 due to the songs being listenable. Not fantastic but there’s some good stuff on here

Decent stuff. The Bon Iver feature was a welcome one as well, as evermore is an excellent song.

High three, right on the edge of a four. It almost made me tear up three or four times but I was very tired when I listened to it haha.

IDK. Makes me think of that time Yasiin Bey said Drake's music was "compatible with shopping".

Surprisingly good, not that pop heavy so was actually enjoyable

Decent. But not my jam.

And for my surprise of the day, I found this incredibly listenable. I certainly can see why she's at the stature she is at, and her ability for a melody and turn off phrase is exceptional. Really, really good. Probably would've giving a shocking four stars, but the 9th Bon Iver appearance really suited the while album. I know him. He's a douche.

Some good songs but not one of my favorite Taylor Swift albums. Does not hold up to Red by any means.

To be honest, this is the first Taylor Swift album I have ever listened to. And it was alright. Also, this review is being written just after Taylor's appearance on the New Heights podcast, the announcement of her album The Life of a Showgirl and the announcement of her engagement to Travis Kelce. Go Chiefs! I do like the indie vibe of the album, to the extent that "indie" is now its own genre. The album perfectly adheres to "indie" conventions. However, I'm not sure how much of the credit or discredit goes to Aaron Dessner. Either way, the album feels almost too perfect. It just does not resonate with me, but is still a pleasant listen.

I don't like contemporary, and I'm not a big T Swizzle guy, but this is still a fun album. Definitely get a Chicks vibe from it, and it definitely is Taylor's best work this decade.

Must we? Although I do respect immensely anyone who stares down the entire music industry and wins.

Clean pop sound. Don’t think I heard a single song in a major key on the whole album.

Not as good as folklore, but still solid stuff happening that I enjoy a lot more than her other records.

certainly the better of Taylor's COVID-era folk/indie records.

I like Taylor but this one's a bit somnolent for my taste. One of my roommates is the biggest Taylor fan maybe in the world and she told me she likes this one but doesn't listen to it often. I asked her to rank Taylor's albums and this one showed up last. So it's not just me, so there!

Given all the focus in this collection on 60s/70s/80s music (and 90s/2000s to a lesser extent), it's weird to see anything from the 2010s or 2020s, and a bit surprising too that we get two Taylor Swift albums at all. Unlike "1989", this album seems less radio-oriented and a bit more singer-songwriter-focused, with kind of mixed results. I imagine this was very happily received among the Swifties, but for the rest of us it doesn't have a lot of highlights or memorable tracks (at least for me), beyond maybe the single "no body, no crime". But it's nice to see that current popular artists are still making albums, even if this one dragged on a bit too long (not to mention the insane level of tedious detail in the Wikipedia entry).

Feels like Taylor Swift can make an okay song out of anything and that this is pretty much what the album feels like. Her voice isn't quite all there, especially in the lower registers, and neither are the songs, but it's all good enough. I've heard some really good Swift songs (Blank Space, Shake It Off) and none of them are on this album, so I question why this album of all her albums?

I wasn’t going to put this on but that’s not the spirit of the challenge! I can’t deny she’s got a knack for a melodic hook. Half of the tracks so far have got a bit of like an emotive build up or something. I am however struggling with the lyrics 😅 might be wrong but I’ve had the impression of most of these pining after men

This was a pleasant listen.
