Reviews (page 5 of 8)

Bom álbum, mas não é o seu melhor trabalho.

It was fine.

I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. 3.5 rounded down

No my favorite Taylor

Happily surprised to enjoy this

It’s not generally my thing and I can’t relate to anything she sings about, but musically it’s fine. I wouldn’t listen to it again, but it’s not the worst thing I’ve listened to on this list by a long way.

Just going to start with the fact that I'm not a fan. I get that there are millions and millions of fans, so me not liking Taylor is just a drop in the bucket. It's just not for me. I'm not the target audience and I'm ok with that. I'm glad she's out there doing her thing and people enjoy it. Good for them and good for her. I'm going to skim through this and move on with my life. I'm not wasting an hour of my life to come to the inevitable conclusion that I'm just not that into it.

no me convenció, aunque melódicamente diana bien

I don't hate it, but it's not all that interesting either. Definitely weird to get a 2020's jumpscare though

3/5. Folklore is a better album by all account but there is definitely something to be said about a B-sides album still being better than a lot of pop artists nowadays. It is more of a duo pact, with Aaron Dessner producing and co-writing everything. But she does a good job and seeming like it is all her and the songs do take over for singer-songwriter rather than the pure pop that it is behind the scenes. And at the end of the day, isn't the final product anyone ever sees anyway? When we watch a movie, are we worried about how much goes into making it or if it is enjoyable at the end? Art is subjective and the only thing that matters is if you enjoy it. With that said, the album was good but not her best, expected more here especially with Folklore right before. Best Song: Willow, Happiness, Tolerate It

As a proud dad of two amazing daughters, I’m comfortably in my Swiftie era. Evermore is a slow burner and offers a more mature take on her song writing…

Solid 3. Started off pretty strong, then the rest kinda dragged on by the end. 3/5

3.5 stars, I think. I know the lyrics are good, but it’s mostly slow and sounds a little repetitive if you’re not paying attention to the words.

I thought I was going to be very bored, turned out I didn't, it's quite entertaining. I think I hear a notable production value, while Taylor's voice is impeccable. I don't really care much for the lyrics or the meaning in this one though.

This is the first time I’ve listened to a Taylor Swift from start to finish. It was okay. I don’t think I will put this in my library, though. It’s a little too long and not enough variety with the subject matter.

The best way to describe this album is it's like sitting in a log cabin in the woods during a rainstorm, looking out the window, and overthinking about all those failed relationships.

I try not to be a Taylor hater but I can't even really get around her folkier music - I liked the Dessner touch but other than that this didn't really resonate. I feel like at the time of release this seemed like a much bigger departure for her than it does now, nothing really stood out to me. I also think this should have been edited down - normally I love a 1 hour album but a lot of these sounded pretty similar to me.

Perfectly nice and enjoyable but only a few tracks really stuck out. Two albums into Taylor Swift I think one of my issues is get production is too polished. Makes things sound too laminated and bland. I reckon I could like this more on repeated listens.

Struggling between a 3 and a 4 here. We all know Taylor is an incredible songwriter and individually these are all good songs, just overall a little more forgettable than some of the other albums.

Now, I love Taylor swift. She is a tour de force of songwriting and business acumen. She is an incredible role model for women in the music industry and with 11 albums out she should certainly be on this list a few times. Evermore, however is not one I would have chosen for this accolade. It sits in her repertoire as a lower quality sequel to folklore... Which should be in this and would be an easy 5. Evermore is just not that album. The soundscape is similar, the themes aren't bad, but it just doesn't come together as an album full of great songs. It's just fine. It doesn't have the hits and the overall album doesn't leave you with any sense of awe, so I can't give it more than a 3. In some ways a 3 seems generous considering her abilities and other output.

Overrated

As far as T Swizzle goes, this is one of her strongest recent projects, for good reason. She's a strong songwriter first and foremost and she knows probably better than anyone else in this lane- how to resonate with her demographic. There's a lot of handcrafted charm in this album, it's quite cozy. I like the organic instruments a lot more with Taylor's songwriting. Willow kicks that off with plucked strings and soft claps through the track. I think it's the catchiest song on this one for sure. champagne problems is really good too with beautiful piano and the somber chorus. There's other somber moments on the album too, like tolerate it, but I think champagne problems is much stronger. Dorothea is another standout track, immersed in that 2010's bokeh folk-indie sound. It's got a nice dreaminess to it, as repetitive as it is. cowboy like me is fire too. what can I say I like the catchy ones. The other songs are a bit too meandery for me, they are effectively like musical wallpaper or remixes of the other elements we've heard until this point, with various storytelling motifs. antonoff sure knows how to craft those fall vibes. I want cider now.

Listen...for an artist who's known for their lyrics and storytelling, this is fine at best. +1 point out of fear that some bitch in red lip stick and a cardigan will run me over with her call singing no body no crime if I leave too low of a review.

Doesn’t tickle my tootsie

Noe av det bedre fra TayTay, men ikke helt min greie.

Fun fact: Taylor Swift dates Travis Kelce, who plays on the Kansas City Chiefs that lost the most recent Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 (also T. Swift is secretly an Eagles fan. Go Birds.) I remember this album coming out during COVID because it was like a surprise drop and I think every Swiftie in America listened to it on a Friday. Songs I liked: willow, champagne problems, gold rush, no body no crime Leans into a folksy and somber vibe. I appreciate that it's not very poppy like her newer stuff and overall it just feels very mature. Outside of the first few songs that became singles, there wasn't much that stood out to me. Nothing was bad per se, but I guess sort of mid and depressing at times. Leaning towards a High 3 more than a low 4.

Listening to this the day Taylor Swift announced her engagement. Congrats Taylor! Pretty soft, not generally my cup of tea. However, her voice is really great and the production is spotless. Really enjoyed 'closure' Not my favorite TSwift album. High side of 3 for this one.

I’ve heard this is the less poppy Tay Tay. Didn’t know a single song off that which is ok, but nothing really stood out too much. Easy listening, but if I’m going for something like this I’m just gonna go with Joni Mitchell now. Still a solid 3.

Credit where it's due, Taylor Swift has definitely tapped into the pop music zeitgeist, or whatever, and made a deep connection with many fans over many years. Far too long for it to be a fluke. It would be very hard to deny that she is a charismatic and talented singer/songwriter. Unfortunately, or fortunately, none of this music clicks with me. There's nothing bad here, but nothing I would listen to again on purpose.

Not of my generation but her music is OK. Good album.

Much better than I expected. Bon Iver song was cool. Haim song sucked.

Surprised

Taylor Swift churns through number one hits as quickly as American football players but this album is not as upbeat as her other albums but it's a nice listen but is not staying in my head.

A few good songs but overall I don't think this represents her talent and range very well.

Instrumentally teilweise ganz nett, lyrics suck though

Not bad, very chilly or mellow.

I've never had a problem of listening to Taylor Swift. Not someone I'll go out of the way to listen to. The music she makes are ok. The song I recognize in this album is gold rush.

Taylor Swift is alright. Like, I'll be the first to admit that she's not my jam, but she's definitely not the next best thing since sliced bread. But it's decent.

This more folksy and mellow pop allows sone of the lyrical and emotional content to take center stage. The base is kind of the same throughout and while the collabs provide some fresh sounds here and there, i had the feeling I had experienced what it had to offer by the latter third.

Way better than I anticipated.

It was fine. Nothing memorable.

heard champagne problems for the first time from a girl who made me relate to the song which his funny, cowboy like me is special Folklore did this concept better, still a beautiful album 6.5/10

Taylor's writing continues to not gel with me. Credit where it's due though, there are a couple of tracks I enjoyed a lot. "dorothea" displays an empathy that I believe is lacking in most of her songs, and the nature metaphors in "ivy" are a good match for her, at times overly superficial, lyrical style.

Unpopular opinion but this is the year Taylor Swift fell off for me. I don't think this album is bad per se (although it all sounds like one long song), I just don't find it all that interesting. I've been a fan since 2007 so it was a good run while it lasted. Some of the songs on Midnights are decent, but I haven't even bothered listening to The Tortured Poets Department. FWIW, I can't even remember if I listened to folklore AND this, or just folklore. It's all just a boring, repetitive snoozefest.

This just sounds like a bunch of Folklore leftovers. That album actually accomplished what this one is trying to.

It has its moments, but mostly this is too one-dimensional and boring. 3 stars

This album isn't bad, it's just kind of meh. It's too long, and every song is kind of the same. Also, I'm not a hater of the National, but I think the Dessner brothers production style is really one note. Taylor's a talented artist and singer, but I think she needs someone who can challenge her a bit and make the songs come alive. The Dessners aren't those people. There's a million albums that sound exactly like this. 3 stars.

I'm not a huge Swiftie by any means, but I got into this album during the Lockdown, and I was pleasantly surprised to see it pop up on this list. It's not my usual musical choice, but if in the mood, I love it. I enjoy how it doesn't sound like her other super popular pop-y albums.

Not my fav album of her, but still really like it. 3.5/5

Solid album, even if all of the tracks kind of sound the same to the point that the album felt long. Won't ever put it on again, so three stars it is. Best track was no body, no crime followed by long story short.

Similar sound across the album with some catchy earworms.

Wasn't expecting to see this particular Taylor Swift album on this list. Haven't actually listened to it before today, but I feel like this has since been overshadowed by her massive following album "Midnights", her ensuing blockbuster Eras Tour, as well as all of the drama with the ownership of her masters and the resulting "Taylor's Version" re-releases that have been recorded since then. In any case, this was a surprise release during COVID and was Swift's 2nd album in the span of about 5 months. Regarded as a sister album of sorts to her previous release "Folklore", "evermore" leans more into the folk side of things and operates on a more intimate scale here. You will not find the pop glitz and glamour that many associate with T-Swift here. The artistic choices definitely make sense given the *2020* of it all. I'm having a hard time deciding if this helps or hinders the entire body of work, however. Swift exhibits her storytelling chops arguably more than ever here, providing a temporary escape (at the time) from, say it with me again: the *2020* of it all. But a lot of the album sounded similar and lacked variety. Too safe and lacking in color I guess is what I'm trying to say. The tracks featuring guests (especially the HAIM one) were somewhat memorable, though. But hey, this album exudes "cozy, wintry cottage" vibes and I'm listening to this in the beginning of goddamn June. Perhaps I need to put this one on the backburner until winter comes around.

I'm not really into her songwriting, but I love Desner's production and overall vibe, the HAIM colab is crazy good, I prefer the bon iver duet on folklore tho

Not my taste but I did like Champagne Problems

Umm not a big fan of Taylor... Too soft for me 💔💔💔

An interesting album, in some manner. I can see why people would listen to that. It's well crafted, and even though the majority of the album ends up on one note, the songs do have a different vibe, even if just slightly. I suspect there's more to Taylor than this album tho.

I’ve tried with T Swift. I really have. Gone and listened to her albums, to see what it’s all about. It never caught on with me, but I certainly don’t begrudge the many, many, many people who like her music. I also do like some of her bigger hits, particularly Blank Space and Shake It Off. Around the time of folklore, I hit a wall and never listened to that, this, or Tortured Poets Society. Or midnights. Does it feel like lately she come up with the idea for a ‘clever’ title and works backwards? I’m genuinely confused as to why this is on here. If Red, 1989, Reputation, and maybe even folklore were on this list, I’d be OK with it. Other artists have had as much representation and aren’t nearly as well regarded as TSwift. Feels like she might deserve it? But this one? Come on.

Not my fav taylor swift album

Not-fun fun fact about me: I've never actually sat down and intentionally listened to a Taylor Swift album in its entirety. So needless to say, I was excited to finally have a reason to do just that! Unfortunately, after a handful of tracks, my excitement dissipated. My disappointing review on evermore = not really for me. That said, Swift has always been a strange musical anomaly to me. She is a genius, but not in the way a Paul Simon or Joni Mitchell is; where the songs speak for themselves. Instead, Swift has a super power that allows her to discover the exact middle ground of youthful experiences (particularly those of the female sex) to where anything she writes can be relatable to most 10-20 year olds across the world. That is an almost impossible thing to do, and I don't know if there's ever been an artist who can do that as well as Swift. I'm listening to evermore while thinking about when I first heard Taylor popping up in Country music charts; and my assumption was that her songwriting approach has evolved so much over the years, and that's how she keeps bringing in new audiences. But now I'm not so sure that's the case. The songs here are not very complicated or intricate; at least no more than what bands like The Dixie Chicks were doing 30 years ago. Here, they're just dolled up in world class production and in some ways, improved by the guest stars. Don't get me wrong; I think these ARE good songs, but they're not great, they're not timeless. I guess they don't need to be. And it's not like she doesn't already have the timeless tracks on other records. I think Taylor will eventually be remembered for her place in pop culture, her politics, her boyfriends, above her music. And I guess that's not a problem. If she gets new generations to cherish the art of collecting physical media through her vinyl sales, or gets them to keep showing up for live music, I'm all for it.

Welp. Never occurred to me that thered be anything this recent (five years old) You know what having any opinion at all on taylor swift is for losers including indifference so I'm gonna listen with a completely open mind and honestly probably enjoy it idk. Les go. Okay first few songs were predictably inoffensive kinda steady for my taste but decent No Body No Crime? Absolute banger. Fucks to hell. Idk man it's a bit sad aye. This the one she wrote in covid lockdown? I like Dorothea. This is one of the gaylor songs I assume. National Jumpscare. What did I say about it being sad. Good tho. Marjorie: good, closure: suck Some highlights here but nothing with this melancholy a sound is ever gonna be my favourite album sorry.

Miles better than expected.

There are unconventional moments here across the board — composition, songwriting, melody — some of which work and some of which don’t. Especially with the melodies there are too many moments that seem to be building towards a big release only to fizzle out. The general soundscape also begins to wear thin after a while due to its sameness. All that being said, I liked this SIGNIFICANTLY more than when it first dropped. I haven’t been a huge fan of the “indie Taylor” era but even the lows here are very solid. Definitely one to enjoy with a good pair of headphones to pick up on the subtleties. Listened to: walking to prospect park. Favorite tracks: evermore, tolerate it, willow

Got this album in during the evening neighborhood walk, which proved a suitable soundtrack. Top picks were WILLOW and IVY, but another listen could add to the list. As with a lot of Taylor, paying attention to the lyrics is paramount. Quality storytellin' n'at.

This was pretty good. More listenable than expected

Folklore B-sides Initially wanted to give it a 4 because I like half of the songs, but the other half just drags into boring navel-gazing indie pop that makes it a slog to get through.

ну не первый раз слушаю, это помогает) народный сторителлер, но по музыке тут ничего не захватило (захватывают обычно неожиданные гармонии / красивые голоса / крутые биты)

This Folk Pop album creates a wintry mood by uding slow-burning melodies, burbling, fingerpicked acoustic guitars, and somber pianos, which makes it unoffemsive. IT is supposed to feature nuanced lyrics, which seems to elude me even after relistening.

Never listened to a Swift album and I only know her top hits. Listening to this album felt very intimate like she told me her innermost feelings. That’s something I rarely feel when listening to music. That was a bit touching. Some songs felt nonsensical (no body, no crime) or I just did not enjoy them (eg dorothea). Still, while I appreciate the overall experience, the vibe and the sound, this is nothing I would listen to in its entirety again. It dragged on a bit.

Haven't listened to this since release, seem to remember I really enjoyed it then but now feels very middling? Pandemic brain maybe. Would much rather listen to 1989/reputation/Red over this, but solid enough I guess. A generous 3, more 2.5

This album is fine but i dont think it’s even a top 3 TS album.

Sad boring but solid

one of the stronger Swift efforts — big fan of her Lover -> Midnights stretch, wasn’t a big fan of Tortured Poets or this re-release thing she’s polluting her discography page with (yeah, yeah, i get why she’s doing it but it still looks clunky). definitely think Folklore is the stronger album so if that’s not on here and this is… i’ll be mostly apathetic but a *little* perturbed.

Lackluster, like one catchy song. Don't like the lyrics

Bit samey tbh, started to feel sleepy whilst listening

I love a murder ballad, so No Body No Crime gets a 👍 outta me

I get it but not my thing

Not my favourite of hers but it's fine and also makes me think of the experience that is Evermore: theme park edition

It's not really my kind of music. But, she has a nice voice, and overall it was good. I will never listen to it again, and that is OK - I still enjoyed it. Solid 3.

The writing is just overly written! Mmm yes I too enjoy writing with my thesaurus handy! Self important and indulgent. Some of the production is a bit choppy, for example, the title track sounds like two separate songs mashed together. Overall it’s fine

I never heard of "cottagecore" until I read the Wikipedia article for this album. It's nice to hear Taylor explore her folky side. The song writing seems pretty good but I personally find this fairly boring.

The songwriting is a bit boring, with very little variety. She has a good voice and there is some ok instrumentation in the background but nothing to get excited over. Those lower case track titles though... BURN IT TO THE GROUND

ugh. yk what she made shake it off and i like that song so maybe this will be great. maybe this will be the beginning of my swiftie arc???? i gave it honest chance and its not that bad. just really inoffensive and at worst sleep inducing. but there are quite a few songs on here that I really liked. soft chamber-y pop always appeals to me i fw that shit. I would say people should listen to this because I feel like people just hate on her without giving her a honest chance, but this didn't really entice me. check it out anyways though i can see the appeal for this. she's not bad people just glaze her too much. BTW: if you one of those "kanye > taylor" people just know that you're just as annoying as die-hard swifties. and thats coming from someone who used to be a kanye glazer (USED TO BE I WANNA MAKE THAT VERY CLEAR)

This is perfectly serviceable folk/indie. It doesn't blow me away, but I can't say I dislike it. I think some people's reviews here are a little unfair, and if this were by someone with more indie creds, there might be fewer one star reviews. Anyway, a strong three for me.

If the latest 1001 Album list is from 2018 how can an album from 2020 be included? Maybe I do not understand time, physics or even simple arithmetic. Did not listen. Will not listen.

surprisingly not bad for the most part, still not my thing, will round up to a 3 star

Washed over me, found bland but not unpleasant, kind of background music…. Sorry Taylor I know I’m the minority view on this….

Day 11- I liked but did not love this album 3/5 #musicsky #albumsky

Have to give a re- listen. Willow is a good song. Made for a rainy day.

Listenable but rather boring and repetitive.

Competent pop music. I am positively inclined toward Taylor Swift as a human, even if this music isn’t for me. I found it more enjoyable than I expected though, though I doubt I’d revisit it.

Once upon a time, I made a D&D Fantasy realm called Evermore. So I was sad to find a lack of trolls, dwarves, and goblins in this album. I'm a fan of Taylor's hits so it was interesting to hear one of her albums without the Shake it Offs and the Blank Spaces. This album is, for the most part, a tender collection of love poems. She's a great poet but I don't feel like her best songwriting shows through on this album. Fav's: Willow, Champagne Problems, No Body No Crime. I mostly like the first half of this album. After Happiness the songwriting kinda falls off for me. And I don't know why I never like it when Taylor does a duet with a guy. Who's this National guy? I don't like his voice. Nice of Bon Iver to show up. It's like when she re-recorded Lover with a guy taking the second verse and letting him write his own lyrics. It sucked. It was a way better song with just her singing. Anyway. Stop singing with these guys Taylor, they are holding you back.

This music is a textbook example of the term “middle of the road”. It never wavers from being solidly safe. That’s alright but I’m not sure there’s any reason to ever come back to this. My favorite moment was the collab with Haim, because I love them even though their presence is almost too light to notice that they are even there, and nothing else. It was as bland as watered down white skim milk.

It’s ok

Not hating on Taylor, as I know how much impact this album had. She's a tremendous talent. It just isn't my taste in music.

So, this is a tough one to analyze. I've never understand Taylor Swift. I'm not a heartbroken teenage girl, so I guess it's not *for* me, but the overwhelming adulation has been confusing because the handful of music I've heard has been pretty basic pop. The annuls of music has spawned dozens of female singer/songwriters that output roughly the same music. This project has already fed me her 1989 album which did nothing to disabuse me of the notion that she is a bog standard, paint-by-numbers pop singer. This album, however, gives me pause. The opening song, willow, is actually pretty good. Not only that, the lyrics are really thoughtful and impactful. Not necessarily to my personal preference, but OK, I'm starting to see the appeal. The rest of the album, however, is really uneven. There are songs that lean heavily into her roots as a country artist, and fuck that noise right away. After six or seven songs I realize there's very little tonal variety in these songs. Her voice isn't spectacular, and she doesn't really do anything special or interesting with it, and so the songs start to get kind of tedious. Now, I'm told that she's a lyrical genius and I'll say straight away - no she isn't. That said, there are snippets of VERY good writing on this album. There's a lot of the stereotypical Taylor Swift whining about a mean boy stuff in here, but there's also a lot of really thoughtful descriptions of hurt and loss and helplessness that I can completely see why it appeals to someone going through a breakup. Overall, I think 3 stars is about right here. There's far too much country-adjacent shit on here to go higher, but overall this is the first time that I see the appeal of Taylor Swift.

I'm not a Swiftie - therefore solid 3 points for solid work

After the brilliant one-two punch of Willow / Champagne Problems, I found that the album lost a lot of its energy, and some of the tracks were just hard to pay much attention to. Songs like Long Story Short and 'Tis The Damn Season aren't instrumentally diverse enough to make up for a lack of energy in Swift's singing, and the result is roughly 20 minutes of tracks that could've been left as B-sides. That being said, it's a more "mature" sound than Swifties were probably expecting from earlier albums like Lover and Fearless. For that, I can definitely understand the hype. Transitioning away from country-pop into this genre that's harder to pin down is a step in the right direction, I think. Swift's melodic preferences are on full display here, including her faltering to a 2nd or 6th of a normal triad chord. It's something a lot of modern pop artists do, and it can hinder an otherwise strong melody. Another technique(?) she uses in all her music is singing softly and deliberately weaker than her full voice. You can tell she has the pipes for stronger vocalising (and she demonstrates her ability in songs on other albums), but here she consistently tones down the energy for a more everyday, talkative voice. It's not necessarily a bad thing – in fact, it's probably done deliberately to make the sound more commercial. But I can't help but feel she's shooting herself in the foot. This is some of the weaker singing I've heard from Tay-tay. The lyrics feel copy-pasted between different songs, too. (I guess there's only so much you can write about relationship woes.) For all the flak I'm giving her, I respect Swift's music. She's obviously very successful, and for good reasons. 3/5 Key tracks: Willow, Champagne Problems, No Body No Crime

I'm not a big swift fan but this was pleasant. I like her higher energy stuff more

I was caught off guard and amazed by how good this album is, and by how much I actually enjoyed most of it. I’ll be honest, Taylor Swift typically appeals to a demographic that listens to music I don’t usually find enjoyable, and vice versa. But this album had a surprising level of quality to it. While I didn’t love every song, a good portion of the album caught me by surprise with its lush production, atmospheric approach, and subtle electronic elements. I imagine this was more of a coincidence, but I’ll take the wins even when they accidentally fall in your lap. I doubt I’ll have many more positive reviews for her moving forward, but at least when my wife wants to listen to her in the future, I’ll definitely be more accepting of it.

3/5. Not bad, but not my style. Sounds a lot like some other music. Lana Del Rey comes to mind. Don't think I'll ever qualify as a Swiftie

It doesn’t have a bite. She’s very expressive and a good singer, but this was a nothing burger. The Bon Iver song was an odd duo.

Better than I expected. I did not make it all the way through, because of time.

Got better as it went on

drei bis vier

I liked willow, and Aaron’s production. Bon iver’s inclusion ruined the end of the album for me. Normally I give 2 stars to albums I know I won’t listen to again, but giving this a 3 as it was more cohesive in sound than other albums I’ve given a 2.

Probably my least favorite Swift album. But I like Cowboy Like Me and No Body, No Crime. Since they sound a little country

Musically, it’s nice to listen to. It’s like hot cocoa on a snowy Sunday morning with the fire going, which I know is what Swift was going for here. But it’s a little too white-woman Instagram for me. For some reason it’s hard for me to listen to what she’s saying, even though she sings clearly. The lyrics are like diary entries from someone who romanticizes the concept of a diary, not from an actual diary. She also has a few “true crime” murder-mystery type Agatha Christie songs which also just sound like rich people at a dinner party thing. None of it is bad but just a bit bland. Everything is also pretty much the same tempo and the same energy, so after a while it starts to blend together. It’s more like a collection of songs than an album I would choose to listen to in full. And/or it’s background music for a wine, cheese and board-game night with the girls. That said, Willow has a great melody and guitar line. Closure also jumped out at me bc it’s in 5/4, which for Taylor Swift might as well be prog rock.

Pop, RnB, 2020 -> 3

Ponderous and samey

Didn't really grab me but was fine. But how much more fun I have listening to "Ba- na- na" over something like this is immeasurable. After this many breakups she should've gotten used to them already, find something else to sing about gudamnit

I hadn't listened to this one in full before, but my daughter is a Swiftie so I knew a lot of the songs via osmosis. It's not bad, bit of a mixed bag. Yes some songs are a bit too melodramatic and some melodies are a bit repetitive, but her songwriting in general has definitely improved. I prefer the songs more obviously written about other characters (like the one with Haim). It's way too long though - they could have trimmed like 10-15 mins easily.

Lošiji folklore

Pretty flawless, but also not groundbreaking in any sense. Not for me at least.

Broadly speaking I like Taylor Swift's music, but I don't know if I would have picked evermore to go on here. Most lists like this also include Red, which I also wouldn't choose though, so I've accepted I don't understand "must-listen" list editors. There was an interview where the people who worked on this album said something like they just kept writing songs in the world that was created on folklore, and to me evermore feels like that's true. They don't feel as innovative, some of them even feel a little repetitive; I do really enjoy "closure" and "long story short" and think "tis the damn season" and "dorothea" are nice together as going-back-home stories. I guess I think the best handful could have been a folklore: deluxe edition expansion.

It’s fine.

Like it was ok but in the way where I swear I've heard several of the song when never actually heard any of the songs of that album

i'm not a taylor swift hater by any means (ultimately, i think i am pretty agnostic) and although this is not near the worst album of hers (her recent albums have been particularly dull and miserable to listen to, in my opinion) this one doesn't really do a whole lot for me. there are some nicer moments ('willow,' 'no body, no crime,' and 'dorothea') but unfortunately this album is bogged down by 'aesthetic' middle of the road acoustic pop music masquerading as 'folk music.' i always contend, taylor has a knack for writing catchy tunes, especially hooks, but unfortunately the style and production here just dull this thing into oblivion.

I can see loving this if I was a teen girl

Reminds me of Dylan

Not my favorite slow folksy ts album. But still pretty easy listening

Indie Taylor, part 2. Songs are a little more meandering at times, but still a strong set of songs. Highlights: "willow" (nice fingerpicked guitar work), "no body, no crime" (bit of a country twang (harmonica, banjo) on this story song about a cheating (murdering?) husband and revenge from the friend of the wronged woman), "dorothea" (piano-based pop song with a jaunty melody), "coney island" (featuring The National, his deep voice plays well off of her girlish voice)

I actually liked some of the songs - but most of them just sounded the same. I liked the storytelling in Dorothea and it’s him but the album got bland and I couldn’t tell when one song ended and another began most of the time

It's not Folklore

My son told me to listen to Folklore as well, so I did. Apparently, they sort of go together, and he says Folklore is better; if it's in the 1001, I guess I'll be ahead of the game. I know that Folklore got him through summer 2020, but he knows Taylor isn't my thing. I know she seems to speak to a whole generation; well, across generations even. I'm largely unmoved - although she's certainly gifted at writing words, I tend to find the bones of the songs dull in terms of the actual chords and melodies. It's a personal thing. Lyrically the themes *can* be heartbreaking at times, but the music just doesn't take me there. I guess I'm just not a Swiftie. (There was some very pretty piano on Folklore.)

Enjoyed this way more than I expected to, but was a tad bored by the end, not gonna lie.

You know what? That wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Now I need to know what she was going through because sounds like she was about to jump off a cliff!!

didn't mind the arrangements, but tswift lyrics are kinda weird, and not for me

Good vibe, not really a stand out record. Still it’s pleasant to listen to.

The second of a one-two punch that brought her back from a unsteady period, evermore continues Taylor Swift's musical metamorphosis as she taps unlikely indie rock collaborators to give her songs a bit more flourish. These are the type of songs that can define an era or two or perhaps more. Favorites: gold rush, 'tis the damn season, tolerate it, happiness, dorothea, coney island, ivy, closure.

prima, overhyped wel. 6/10

Sorry I don’t get it??? But still gave a decent vote as obvious talent

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this album. Willow, champagne problems, ‘‘tis the damn season are the better songs, but the sleeper is no body, no crime. 1001 album worthy: Yes - 7/13

This is a nice listen. I was a fan of folklore and evermore is in a similar vein. Cosy, soft acoustic based songs. It does feel a little like a b-sides compilation from folklore as not all the songs are particularly memorable. Highlights are Coney island, Ivy & Cowboy Like Me. A decent album but not one of Taylor's best.

Album 612 of 1001 Taylor Swift - evermore (2020) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Decent album with some decent songs but the tone never seems to change, throughout. While some of the songs are obviously trying to cross genres, they sound a lot alike. Never noticed how her voice is so much like Suzanne Vega's.

I liked it more than I thought I would. but it was a little one note for me. Pretty slow which is fine but most of the album was that way. I liked the album photo. Felt very autumnal.

Pretty decent from T Swizzle. Slower then I expected but there were some pretty catchy songs. My favorite was the one where she was going to help murder her friends husband

I like to think of myself as very much pro-Taylor Swift but I do have to admit that I kind of gave up paying attention to her albums after 1989. Even the fact that at some point she started working with the guy from the National - theoretically right smack bang in the middle of my indierock listening middle aged white male wheelhouse - didn't make me jump back in. This is one of those album with Aaron Dessner. It's nice. The songs are well crafted. The lyrics are pretty smart. It sounds very grown up but also nothing stands out. I keep waiting for it to get going. It kind of sort of does a bit in Long Story Short but it's a bit too little, too late for me.

This is nice enough but a bit bland, the songs a bit more forgettable. I think she's done better. For me, Folklore was better. I'm not convinced this album belongs on this list; it smacks of a change that needed to be made to ensure a new edition of the book had new things.

Fun enough.

some basic small town pop love songs. first one is fine, the rest are completely unmemorable

Pop singer makes indie folk-pop album w/ guy from The National, and results are pretty decent. Still contains pop elements in a subtler way. A pretty quiet, Wintery album. Songs have both a softness and sparseness but also moments of musical depth and lushness. I can understand her talent as a lyricist here, writing picturable stories of different characters. Fine album overall, I’m just not really the target audience and feel her truer pop music packs a bigger punch.

I don't think I could have asked for a better album to listen to while raking leaves. This was a pleasure. I'm not a big Taylor Swift fan but I usually enjoy engaging with her music and listening to an album straight through. She has a gift for writing melodies and she's an expressive singer with a gorgeous voice. I also enjoy engaging with her music with a critical eye. For every clever line she writes, there's another that makes me roll my eyes. Her lyrics can feel like high school poetry -- they're earnest and heartfelt but often cheesy and filled with clichés. She also has a tendency to stuff a verse with a bunch of different metaphors, which dilutes the power of what she's saying. Sometimes I want to yell, "Just stick to one image per verse!" Here's an example of the sort of mixed metaphors she writes from the opening track "Willow": Life was a willow and it bent right to your wind Head on the pillow, I could feel you sneakin' in As if you were a mythical thing Like you were a trophy or a champion ring And there was one prize I'd cheat to win First off, trophies and champion rings aren't mythical things. They're difficult to get but "mythical" feels like the wrong word choice. Also, the first line here is wonderful. Why not stick with the wind and tree imagery a little longer? Why introduce something new when the first metaphor is still ripe and has more to give? But just when I start to get grumpy listening to Taylor Swift, there's a song like "'Tis the Damn Season" that wins me over. It perfectly captures that vulnerable, nostalgic feeling of returning home for the holidays and running into people from your past. "Happiness" is another strong song. There's a lot of poignant lines here. "Tell me, when did your winning smile begin to look like a smirk?" is a biting one-liner. And "All you want from me now is the green light of forgiveness" is a wonderful way to describe the conversations people have after a break-up. The production is also fantastic here, mostly by Aaron Dessner from The National, along with Swift. The music is just gorgeous.

Haven't seen a Taylor Swift record on here yet, and it's been a while since I've listened to one of her albums full through. This one I have heard in its' entirety but it was a while ago and right when it came out. I remember looking forward to hearing it because it's her folky pop album but I was kind of unimpressed but we'll see how this time around goes. The production is solid- excellent even, albeit a bit uninspired and at times milquetoast. I would have loved a folky-pop album that uses that as a creative kickoff point and chooses to try more and not just remain grounded in the typical sounds for the sake of it being cohesive. My biggest gripe with Taylor's lyrics is that she treats them as if they are some authoritative element of her songs and she will too easily take a really well fitting established melodic sequence and then throw a wrench into it and add or remove syllables in order to accommodate a precious lyric. It makes it so that the listener is treated to a nice consonant sequence and then is jarred by some odd addition to the melody because she HAS to awkwardly slide a specific lyric in. We hear it about 6 minutes into the album on "champagne problems", where she sets up a pretty typical dotted eighth syncopated melody against a piano harmony. It's pretty and nice, and the lyrics are her typical love/broken heart/breaking heart usual garden variety stuff but then she switches the melody completely to triplet feel on: "She would've made such a lovely bride What a shame she's fucked in the head" they said But you'll find the real thing instead She'll patch up your tapestry that I shred". I can see some kind of argument for "well this is the big moment in the song, this is the realest lyric that comes out and states the obvious", but it's just kind of corny and cringey? We're getting this weird change in the structure for some blunt part that isn't memorable or creative, it's just in your face and obtuse. I wouldn't dislike this concept so much if it wasn't seemingly always occurring during an awkward lyric, which continually hurts her songs over and over and draws way too much attention to a part that I don't want to be a focal point. The on-the-nose idea comes up a lot in her lyrics too and it drives me a bit nuts how she so seldom blends basic poetic concepts into her lyrics. I often fall into one of her songs where it's a lot of blunt lyrics like: "On that night late in November I walked away from you wearing your sweater You must have tripped and fell Trying to catch up to me" And then she adds in some line that is overly poetic with some recently encyclopedia'd words to make up for the lack of poetry that far into the song: "Decanting our love, no, you're miscasting our spell" This is her lyrical template: Boring line about love / describes a scene Boring line about some guy in that scene Boring line that ends on a specific word to easily rhyme with Superfluous and overly poetic line that contains verbiage that doesn't exist anywhere else in the song It's like she HAS to end every single section with a lyrical punchline. It's just kind of pretentious and annoying. "Oh I know my fans will eat up this part about how I walked away from that guy on that scene and left him with some (not actually) profound poetic phrase that I came up with in the shower while I was rehashing our argument". "tolerate it" is cool, I actually really love the piano part. It's so emotive and interesting and still fits well into the context of the album. It again has odd out-of-breath lyrical moments where she feels the need to cram in, like the whole bridge feels so rushed vocally. "Now I'm beggin' for the footnotes in the story of your life" Damn just take your time girl, that can be 2 measures instead of 1? I actually really like the idea of hers to go through "eras" with her albums and just have different kinds of concepts come in and out. It's fun, not too far from what I like in my own music, but the continuous thread throughout all of them is love song after love song after love song. For me, that's OK to an extent, but hers are so typecast about some scorned love affair and how she gets someone back that it's tired and a bore to hear over and over. I feel like Taylor Swift is a person that hasn't always had the right people around her to flourish as a pop mega superstar in a healthy way. Lots of "yes men", but I don't think that she is completely innocent in the intimidating and oppressive way that she manages her brand and releases. She holds onto songs and releases limited editions with a new acoustic version or two of a song, all strategically released at times when other artists take over number 1 spots on charts so that her sycophant fans can spend another $50 to push her album to the top and to continue to stroke her ego. I don't like the way she handled Olivia Rodrigo blowing up; probably the first time that a younger and more talented songwriter came and threatened her throne. She just comes across as this overly fake god-like figure that has to be the best in the sport that we all call "the music business". The toughest thing for me to wrap my head around with Taylor Swift is that when all is said and done, when I remove the element of her odd management, her cult-at-times fans, all of the forced "who is she dating now" tabloids / nfl game coverage, I simply think her music isn't worthy of all of the pomp and circumstance. The songs themselves actually aren't some otherwordly pieces of art that deserve this level of adoration. I could understand girls screaming and feinting during live performances of the Beatles, I could understand it if it happened for Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Nirvana deserves these levels of fans. But these songs are just really so straightforward and not groundbreaking or anything close to what I think of when I think of truly deserving rabid fan bases. To be fair, I do think that every album of hers has around 1 or 2 bangers on it, but not like "stop what you are doing so you can hear this song" kind of stuff. It might seem like I'm just writing this review to rip her apart, but I think it's more because I'm trying to understand her music & fandom more, and this is how I tend to do it with every artist. Part of me wants to give this a 2/5, but I've given so many 3's to other albums solely because of their importance in music as a whole and I feel like any of Taylor's albums deserves that too because she is such an important (and polarizing) person for music. I also think it deserves at least a 3 because the production is so tight, as expected. I usually give 2's to albums that I think are just OK and are questionable inclusions on this list, and there's no question for me that Taylor Swift definitely deserves to be included. 3's for me are usually a solid album that sounds good and does a few things pretty well but for the most part isn't really memorable, and 4's are usually really great albums that can be considered standout works of art, and 5's are reserved for those "best albums of all time" categories. I already established for myself that this has to be higher than a 2, so is this a truly great work of art to deserve a 4? I don't really think so. So that's my rationale. It's a 3.

Not in my edition of the book! 2020. 3 stars. Sounds like Lana Del Rey's younger cousin, even down to some of the vocal phrasing. Decent tunes, sharp lyrics, but it does seem over emotionally wrought and veers dangerously into teenage girl poetry at times.

It's not a bad album, but genre-bending and experimental?? BITCH WHERE??

All over the place and very much of its time. But it’s a good start. I prefer Post from this period.

So this one wasn’t really my thing. She just kinda talk sings the whole time and every song sounds the same.

First Taylor Swift album I've ever listened to. It okay.

mix of ethereal pop and folk. once again, the “stickiness” of the choruses are undeniable.

I think I understand why she is so popular.

I teach piano. Years ago, a young student wanted to learn a Taylor Swift song. She had bought the music online and printed it out for her lesson. I said, sure, we can take a look. She was an absolute beginner, so I thought maybe we could help her learn to play just the melody. Whatever song this was (long forgotten), the melody was only a couple of notes, over and over again. Then maybe a third. The whole song went on like this. She played the melody, but there was nothing there. It was difficult to determine where she was in the song. Nothing to hold onto, nothing to remember. It didn't sound like anything. I think of that every time I hear a TS song.

Totally decent album that would have greatly benefited from a fat trim. Some clever lines, I really liked Champagne Problems but there were a few absolute duds too. This could have been a tight 45min album. There were some good guests here too that helped raise the album up. 3 stars

I like the opening songs, strong start out of the gate.

The music is quite good The lyrics are mostly bad. Just so cringy, and I know her fans like these kinda cringy lyrics and references, but they ruin good melodies on nearly every song.

it’s a tragedy that evermore is on this list but folklore isn’t. this album is VERY okay. folklore is actually great and i think will age better than most of her other stuff. this album isn’t even bad but it’s in the bottom half of her discography and there’s a companion piece that is LEAGUES above this one so there’s no reason for it to be above 3 stars

Taustamusaa ilman isoja tunnelmia.

From the songs I’d heard, I wasn’t a big Taylor Swift fan and when this popped up, I wasn’t looking forward to it. This was better than expected. For me, she works better with a more stripped down approach like this album. I don’t think this is great, but it at least creates a nice mood.

Love her dancey stuff more

This was all a bit samey for me. And I like the artists she collabs with on this but idk what it is. Her voice I think makes it all a bit drab? Anyway, the upshot is I prefer poppy TS

She has good songs and she has "yeah, that sounds pretty good" songs. I rarely wanna listen to either category

August 11, 2024 HL: "Willow", "Gold Rush", "Happiness", "Marjorie" As good as the music has been lately, much of it seems suited to much colder weather than what I've been having; Seventh Tree, Porcupine, & especially this, tisn't the damn season Funny that around the same time I started this project (early 2021), both this and Folklore were still pretty new & fresh. However I gave the latter my attention (rare for anything Swift-related), while only hearing a couple songs from this one. Since it's been a few years since I listened to Folklore in full (& a year since listening to 1989), I can judge Evermore as its own release and not just offcuts from the preceding album. It's definitely the most interesting of the 3, in my opinion; the electro/acoustic sides balance themselves really nicely, & some rich, atmospheric moments ebb and flow by like in "Happiness", "Closure" & "Gold Rush". I do wonder whether my preference for this over 1989 has more to do with the "sad Christmas" aesthetic than actual lyrical content & song structure. For every "Willow" that I was vibing to, there was a "Champagne Problems" that I didn't really engage with. It's still a pretty consistent listen. A far cry from 1989, which had at least one song I plain do NOT like ("Bad Blood"). 3.5, maybe a 5 later

I don't get how Taylor swift is so popular. The songs were good, the lyrics too. But nothing that amazing. I thought it was ok. Just ok. This is not an attack on the fanbase or the artist but for me it is just okay. Nothing special. Judge me.

Maybe this album will make a lot more sense to be included in the list 10 years from now, but right now it felt extremely uninspiring, even in its blandness. Most of the album just passed by, one song blending with another, with the rare exception of the ones that had a feature as supporting vocals. I can't say I liked it, I can't say I hated it, so placing it right in the middle.

Hahahahahaha Swifties rejoice Nie heel bijzonder, zitten wel paar goeie nummers op Maar is dit nou een van de 1001 beste albums ooit?

Welp. Time for more Taylor Swift. Hooray. Whatever, this is the last one on the list, so I never have to listen to any of her album ever again. As stated in my 1989 review, the music really isn't my thing. I'm gonna be honest, I have some problems with this album. I'll start with praise. The production is quite good. It's very clean, which works for an album like this. I also respect this album for the exploration of its themes. However, this also ends up tying to one of my big problems with this album. It feels kind of repetitive. It might just be me, but for the first half in particular, the songs just felt a bit too similar to each other. Fortunately, this isn't nearly as big of an issue in the latter half or so. I also wasn't the biggest fan of the singing, which feels a bit bland to me here. The writing also isn't my favorite. I can't explain why. Unfortunately, I may be biased. As stated in my 1989 review, Taylor Swift's music has effectively been shoved in my face for years. Combine that problems involving her fandom and you get a general lack of interest in listening to an artist's music. I've really tried with these two albums to look critically and avoid any preconceived notions, but it's really hard. If you like this album, I totally get it. I can see good things here. I just don't personally care about it, and that might be my own fault in a way. I'm sorry. Low 3/5.

I enjoy the folk taylor albums a lot, but I would've rather seen a couple other taylor albums on here instead of evermore, that would've been around 4th on my list. I do like this album and think taylor is great lyricist

Just okay. I wouldn’t go see her in concert based on this album alone. Odd choice of all her albums.

I didn’t want to like this. Most likely because of her ubiquity. But this album shows that Tay Tay is a good songwriter and lyricist, and I overall enjoyed the listen. To me, this more quiet whispy airy minimalist style fits her voice and lyrical themes way better than the over produced stadium crap. And while I do like the production for the most part, there are too many times where the tricks overlap which IMO actually starts to homogenize the album as a whole taking away from each song’s individual sound. I am clearly a member of the Tortured Taylor Department who’s probably just tired of hearing about her everyday. But this is a nice album and an easy go-to for chillaxin.

I just can’t even right now. I think this is totally fine but just didn’t grab me by the plums in an enjoyable way. Methinks we have more Taylor on the way… 2.75/5

Some nice tracks on here for sure 🕊️

Pop is not my preferred genre, so let me admit I've never listened to a Taylor Swift song in its entirety prior to this. Here's the take from my virgin ears... She's a talented storyteller and lyricist, has a great voice, and creates melodic, soothing sounds. Not enough diversity of song structures and/or instrumentation to hold my attention for active or repeated listening. Sounds like more of a background album for me (if at all). That said, I really liked two tracks... "champagne problems" is hauntingly beautiful and will work its way into one of my playlists. "no body, no crime" has an indie sensibility and a bit more edge, which I enjoy. Wish she did more of this kind of stuff.

Decent radio friendly pop with no edge whatsoever. And I can’t really find any immediate hit songs either. To add to undulat, the album is way too long, so what should be a nice collection of songs really starts to annoy me during the last 10-15 minutes

2 songs in, first reaction is that this is less obnoxious than I anticipated. Production and tone is more low key than your average "Shake It Off" or "Look What You Made Me Do", ect., which is a relief. I'm certainly not finding it very relatable, but that's to be expected. She's coming across very self-involved but then her target is high school girls where every negative emotion feels like the sky is falling. It's weird that she tries to come across so relatable. I think that's what feels so off to people like myself. Singing about dirt roads, boating licenses, and Olive Gardens, I'm just not buying it. It's like when she drops a swear word in the middle of one of these tender ballads, it just doesn't come across as authentically edgey. Ultimately this isn't too offensive, like I find her big stadium-choruses on her more recognizable radio hits. This is a welcome subtle production with plenty of stark minimalism, it's just not super memorable. I just don't think that she's as deep as she thinks she is. Is this a good album? To many, it seemingly lands in that territory. As for me, however, to reference track 5, it took a bit of effort to be able to "tolerate it".

Cool but not memorable.

It wasn't bad, a lot of 1-star reviews sound pretty biased. It's not something I would listen to again personally but to say it's 1-star is mad.

Besser als gedacht. 3,5

I can't really relate to this at all, but I can understand why it would connect for some people. For me it was bland and boring, but sometimes catchy, like a lot of the Taylor Swift songs I'm familiar with.

The songs kinda sound the same

The album started off really strongly and I thought I was actually gonna love it. As it went along though, it began losing my interest more and more. Some of the songs felt like long-winded narratives and internal monologues that weren't interesting enough to keep me engaged.

Some strong hooks but the album really blends into one after a while.

🙂‍↔️

As expected, this is a pleasent listen, with some good catchy tracks and some lovely moments. I enjoyed, but I'm not a full Swiftie yet...

I did enjoy this for like 10 songs. It sounds pretty, the lyrics are nice. Crazy what you can achieve with talented songwriters. And the folk sound of these two albums suit her voice so much better. She should do this instead of shitty albums like her latest midnights

I actually liked Taylor Swift when she was a country singer. She felt genuine and refreshing among the crappy pop-country of the time. This wasn't to my taste, but I think the appeal is the same for her now as it was then. She manages to take the blandest most boring pop and generic lyrics and make it somehow sound genuine, heartfelt and relatable. I think what she does, she does well and clearly it works for a huge amount of people. I gotta give some credit for that even if I struggled a bit waiting for it to end.

Never heard a TS album so was prepared to dislike. It's got the National's fingerprints all over it and so it feels familiar. Enjoyable 3.5

It was ok

Acoustic love songs with cuss words. Alright. It all sounds the same. One thing I will say is the quality of production is second to none. It sounds pure.

It's fine, something about the music and lyrics rarely hits for me with Taylor Swift, but there's nothing wrong with this album. I really liked the Bon Iver feature as a song, the rest kinda blended together for me.

Ruhige, folkloristische Melodien und tiefgründige Texte über Liebe und Verlust. OK.

No not a fan, but I see the talent. She writes her own. It wasn’t that bad, but hard to listen to all at once. Break it up and its listenable. Wasn’t expecting to hear her use language, and sing about sex. I don’t get all the hate on her, she has way more talent than half of the nonsense out now.

I think I’ve seen this film before. There were three big sides to pick in 2020, Biden vs Trump, Vaxxed vs Unvaxxed, Folklore vs Evermore. There is no over-exaggeration in this metaphor at all. Folklore and Evermore are sister albums, both featuring a similar aesthetic of Indie Folk Pop focusing on stories of love, heartbreak, infidelity, all set against a background of a New England Autumn and Winter. I don’t actually know about the New England part, I’m from Old England, my knowledge of New England comes from watching The West Wing and completely falling in love with Noah Kahan’s Stick Season album last year. As an artist, I do understand the instinct to want to stay within a world you’ve created. There’s a sense that you’ve put the work into creating the world, why not stick with it, there are more stories to be told? And a lot of the time, this can be an effective strategy. Balzac, Trollope and Galdos all wrote novel series with multiple returning characters where each individual work functions as an effective work in it’s own right. But on the other hand, taking each work as it’s own distinct experience has it’s own benefits. It forces you to think about the individuality of each work, about the specifics of the style you’re using, of the story you’re trying to tell. Looking through the Wikipedia page for Evermore tells us that a lot of the reviews referred to the album as the ‘scrappy, freewheeling and bold’ younger sister to the ‘careful, introspective and hopelessly Romantic’ Folklore. I might be showing something about my own soul here, or maybe just betraying the fact that I am myself an elder sibling, but I feel the care, introspection and Romanticism of Folklore makes for a much more consistently interesting, dynamic, and beautiful album than scrappy boldness does. I don’t think Evermore is necessarily a bad album. It has the same basic instincts as Folklore, and I like Folk music about relationships and love more than I like most other music that you care to name. To continue the literary comparison, Folklore feels like a novel, a large plotted narrative with enough digressions to fill out the world. It establishes the world, the characters and the style remarkably well. Evermore feels like the collection of short stories that the author published to cash in on the success of the novel. A lot of the songs are very good, but it all feels as if the author isn’t ready to move on. They’ve created this world, and have ideas for how to utilise it, but not enough ideas to fill out a full narrative. Instead we get vignettes. Checking the Taylor Swift Subreddit, one commenter says that ‘[Swift] has said she sees Folklore as an album about conflict and Evermore as an album about endings.’ While I can’t speak for the truthfulness of this statement, if it is true, it does go some way to justifying my interpretation. The interesting parts of novels are all about conflict, the ending is really the last part that should be considered. With stories, the ending is what’s important, you want to start the story as late as possible, so that you get to the resolution quickly. There is a place for this approach in literature. There is a place for this approach in songwriting. It all comes down to preference at the end of the day. And I’ve always been a keep the resolution til the very end kind of guy. Keep up the conflict. All this 500-ish words has been to say, I am a Folklore guy. In my opinion it should have been on this list rather than Evermore. But I can see why Evermore is here. It’s all a question of preference. I have mine. The list compiler has theirs. And for what it’s worth, I think Hoax has a perfect ending for the story of Folklore. ‘You know the hero died, so what’s the movie for?’ It’s existential, it’s meaningless, it comes out of nowhere. The heroine spends her time screaming at cliffs for a meaning. It’s the ending a Romantic story should have. And then she makes puns about the actual Romantics in the epilogue bonus track? Folklore should have absolutely been on this list, it would have been a five no doubt

Better than TTPD but most songs sound more or less the same.

Everokay.

quite nice

It’s a good indie record. Not my favorite TS album though.

First of all: Pulling the "Just a wittle girlypop forest gal sooo cottage-core!💅🌿•✧˖°🧚🏻" aesthetic, while having the highest CO2 footprint out of any person in recorded history is something a normal society would encase you in a block of concrete for. Sorry, just had to rant about that before I even listened to the album. Onto the music. It's actually pretty good and I get why she's so big. Even through my distaste for generic pop vocals and the fact that I can't relate to a single lyric, I enjoyed it. Personally, if I ever woke up in the body of Taylor Swift, I would release a power-industrial album and watch the world plunge into chaos. 3/5.

It was ok.

First time listening to Taylor Swift so interesting to hear what all the hype's about. Some were ok, others a bit meh.

I was very surprised by this and how great of a voice she actually has but I don’t see myself going back to this.

I liked this far more than I expected.

I don’t see what all the fuss is about here. This sounds to me like Taylor Swift cosplaying as a folk singer to very mediocre effect. I don’t think it’s bad, just banal and not a logical 1001 inclusion. 2.5/5

Between this and the new COWBOY CARTER album I have realized that apparently if you are a female music icon now, your tracks must be either ALL CAPS or all lowercase, there is no other option!! T Swift's lyrics have never particularly resonated with me, which is fine, I am very clearly not the target audience, and I hate jack antonoff's production style, but I think this is the most palatable she is gonna sound for me. I wish she diverged a bit more from the pop formula when it comes to the narrow selection of chord changes used and her overall phrasing, but it does make the lyrics easier to decipher on first listen when I don't have to devote as much active brain space to processing the music itself. I understand that to those really familiar with her ouvre this is a sonic departure but to my less developed T swift ear it sounded like a difference of meters, not miles, especially in contrast with Beyonce truly going country last Friday. Well crafted but I'd be pretending if I said any one of these songs will linger in my brain for very long after listening. I felt like most sounds ended abruptly?

Taylor’s lyrical talent is mostly on display here (although multiple tracks referencing someone’s dirty tires is maybe unnecessary) but I feel like the music just wasn’t there. It sounded nice but it was just background. This was almost spoken word poetry. And she’s clearly capable of both so fell a little flat for me. High 3.

Good lyrics and song writing. High 3. I’m not upset I listened to it but I probably wouldn’t come back to it. It’s definitely good pop but I don’t know if it’s great

Taylor Swift probably deserves a spot on the list, but including evermore feels like flanneled gatekeepers lecturing it's "actually a pretty decent album". Don't hate it, but didn't bother listening to all of it.

I liked this more than I’m willing to admit. Not sure how it stacks up to her other records as this is the first one of hers I’ve ever listened to, but the low key approach here generally worked for me. Stick with the standard version that ends with the title track. The 2 bonus tracks tacked onto the end on the deluxe edition don’t really add anything for mine.

The first Taylor Swift album I've listened to. It was alright. For some reason it sounded to me like she was slightly slipping into a really bad Scottish accent on Closure which I enjoyed. Doubt I'll listen to it again but definitely better than some of the other albums on here.

Really enjoyed 'ivy', i think the others were a little bit slow/generic for me. Was relaxing though!

Not exactly full of tunes

A bit slow.

A *SAD* white woman's instagram.

I’m a fan of pandemic-era Taylor; but should Folklore have been included instead of Evermore? Yeah, of course. It has better tunes and came first. I still like this, though. The songwriting is top-notch and for every slightly uninspiring track there are a couple that effectively up the energy or tug on the heartstrings. 3.5 stars

not bad not great, listened 2x and some catchy tracks 3.1/5

You know, it may not be exactly my thing, but I can see why people like it. Much better than I was expecting.

This is quite a shift in continuity for me...I was just getting around to listening to Taylor's catalog starting from her releases in the 2000s and now this album crops up, one that was released during arguably the singer-songwriter's most successful decade yet. My frame of reference is small here. I say it feels like a more mature, sobered-up, and melancholic take on her debut minus the more upbeat perky country tracks that that project was riddled with. "The National" member Aaron Dessner's production style is minimalistic with most of the instrumentation consisting of subtle electronic-esque drum machine, piano, and acoustic guitar. It makes for a very dreary atmosphere while still feeling like a warm blanket on a brisk morning. I particularly like "tolerate it" for that exact reason. I like the bolder instrumentation on "no body, no crime" with HAIM which has one of the sticker melodies. Generally, the music sounds great and is luscious when it needs to be. Minimalism works in this record's favor especially considering these tracks' subtle build-ups. Lyrically speaking, a majority of this record's subject matter can be bottled down to Taylor's "romantic troubles", but that would be an unfair assessment since there's a subtle depth to the way Taylor chooses to portray her adult life relationships. For example, I like "happiness" which tackles the limits of maturing post-relationship. I also really enjoyed the duet "coney island" with The National member Matt Berninger. Lyrically it's a nostalgic look at a relationship but the highlight here is the way the two's vocals blend near the end of the song. The other duet on this album with Bon Iver works very well as a closer as well. "long story short" is Taylor's optimistic look at her future but also her satisfaction with where she is in the present. This is a good folk-pop record but, admittedly, I do think it's too long for its good. The lyrical themes and overall concept never got dull, but the minimal nature of the production and Taylor's vocals left me worn down by the end. There's no sticky hook or pop track to be found in the mix here, which I respect, but I tend to also really enjoy those Taylor tracks. Nevertheless, I respect Taylor for sticking to her guns and fully committing herself to the intimate mood she sets out to capture with this album's sound.

Jolie dentelle. Un peu tranquille et songeur à mon goût

Don’t know why this album is on the list over folklore. When folklore came out I was so impressed with it and how much I enjoyed a Taylor swift album, when this came out I gave it one listen thought it sounded very similar to folklore and never came back to it. To be fair if they came out in a different order I might have the complete opposite view. So I tried to listen with a open mind today, this is a good singer songwriter album, makes my think of Bon iver as a obvious comparison, does it deserve to be on the list, I think considering this and folklore together as two similar albums, yes one of them should most likely be included.

I wouldn't have expected that this would be the album that would be on the list. It's listenable.

Very similar sounding throughout on sound and subject. Had some cool collaborations.

Evermore is a really strong follow up to Folklore and shows just how much Taylor Swift has grown as a songwriter. The album leans into indie folk and alternative pop again, but it feels slightly darker and more atmospheric. The storytelling is cinematic and detailed, with characters and narratives that pull you in. It is reflective, moody and beautifully arranged. Somewhere along the way I have realised I might actually be a Taylor Swift fan. No Body, No Crime is a clear standout. It has that noir country edge and a gripping storyline that makes it instantly memorable. It adds a bit of grit to an otherwise delicate and introspective record. There are no obvious weak spots. The album feels cohesive and carefully constructed, and it rewards listening all the way through rather than picking out just one or two tracks. Favourite track: No Body, No Crime Least favourite: None. It is consistently strong Album artwork: Muted and mysterious. A cool, understated cover that perfectly matches the tone of the music

I think this is a very good album, one of Taylor’s recent best, but it seems like kind of an odd pick for an All-Time Essentials list. It’s still so new and it isn’t particularly groundbreaking, in general or for Taylor. She absolutely belongs on this list, but I don’t know that this album does. 3.5 but I’m rounding down for that.

I listened to a playlist Tim made of the best songs from this album and it was fine.

Not my type of music at all and I cant say I enjoyed it. I've never listened to this my TS ever and it was much better than I assumed it would be. I guess it's good pop music.

Pienet alkukirjaimet biisien nimissä on mulle vähän liikaa, tumblr-estetiikkaa 10 vuotta myöhässä. Mutta aika kiva albumi! On haluttu pientä ja maanläheistä, ja siinä pysytään yllättävän hyvin.

Not bad, can tell she was knocking about with Justin Vernon and The National.

Not my favourite of hers, but mostly pretty enjoyable. Some of this is on a playlist that my toddler falls asleep to, so it's possible that I've just been overexposed to a lot of it and that's taken it down.

A well produced and richly arranged collection of songs, if a bit bland and dragging in pace. Honestly better than I expected from Taylor Swift. But I am definitely not a fan of her lyrical style, which I would describe as rambling verisimilitude, peppered with overly-repeated refrains. As contemporary pop goes, this is close to as good as it gets, but I found myself waiting for it to end. Fave Songs: Champagne Problems, Willow, Tolerate It, Tis the Damn Season

After listening to 1989 my hopes were pretty high when it came to my second Taylor Swift album. Unfortunately, this is a very different album in many ways. It was much to soft and monotone for me, and there wasn't a real hit on the album I could identify. Pop Taylor is what hits the spot for me, this was altogether skippable. Highlight: no body, no crime Lowlight: cowboy like me Surprise Hit: champagne problems

very chill, not her best work but still decent

Most songs are just OK; they don't have a memorable sound or a chorus to sing along to. I often found it challenging to follow the narrative because of the lack of repetition and the abundance of little details. I'm sure there are plenty of smart quips in the lyrics, but I couldn't properly appreciate them while casually listening to the album. There were a few tracks that were a bit more catchy. "No Body No Crime" stood out most because its rhythm is different from the rest of the album and due to the darker and more direct lyrics. But overall, everything still sounded like generic alternative/country/folk/pop/singer-songwriter stuff, though clearly more polished and modern than average. I don't know why this album was such a sensation during the lockdown - it does not really deal with any relevant themes; most of the songs are about relationships. Nor is it particularly novel in terms of sound. I guess Taylor Swift was just already popular then, and people were paying more attention to music releases in general.

Expected to hate it, never listened to a Swift song before (not that I could recognize, anyway). She makes the type of music I normally try to skip. But this was far better than I expected. I can see why she is so popular, because if I liked her genre, I'd be all over it. Best song was 'no body, no crime', its conclusion made me laugh

I love to defend Taylor and this is a *good* album with really solid songwriting, but I have a few thoughts. First of all, it's too long which is keeping it from being stronger in my opinion. There are a few filler songs that could've been cut. Also, it's hard and probably too early to say if this will stand the test of time and really stand out as one of her best albums. 1989 is inarguably an extremely tight and influential pop album from the past 10 years, but I'm not convinced that evermore is going to have that same status meaning I'm not sure it will stand up against a lot of other albums on this list. Yes, it's good and yes, there is a place for Taylor here, but not more than 3 stars for me.

Evermore is one of Taylor's better projects, following up Folklore, which was also pretty good. I've not heard her newest, but she was on a bit of a streak in 2020. This style of folk music is a nice change of pace from her radio-pop hits I'm used to hearing day-to-day.

I've never listened to a Taylor Swift album before and I'm getting the vibe that this particular album wouldn't be where one would want to start with her catalog but rather something one would want to listen to as a fan who wants to go deeper. And that's not a bad thing. Taylor Swift is a talent. She's tapped into something that resonates with the psyche of her fandom and I think she fully deserves and has earned everything that she has accomplished. This album isn't really aimed at me and not the type of music I seek out but I enjoyed it. Two standouts for me were No Body, No Crime and Marjorie, a touching homage to her grandmother. This album didn't make me a Swiftie but it earned my respect and opened me to a willingness to hear more of her work.

I was interested to listen because of the fans in the family. I admire her ability and thought the tracks were alright so a maybe generous 3*

this is quite pleasant. t swizzle knows how to make a folk pop album. very POP imo, but it's very well produced. (It's like a discount big thief though): 7.3/10 ALSO LIKE IM SO SURPRISED THERES LIKE A SOMEWHAT EXPERIMENTAL SONG ON THIS ALBUM LIKE WTF???? WHAT THE FUCK IS A SONG LIKE CLOSURE DOING HERE???? ITS REALLY GREAT, BUT STILL...

It wasn't that bad, I was enjoying a couple of the songs here and there, even though it really isn't my type of music.

Pior que gostei, é bobinho pop mas dá para ouvir na rádio

This wasn't half bad. Kind of somewhere between pop and folk/country, but not in the same way as a lot of modern country music, and much less pop-y than what I expected from Taylor Swift. I wouldn't be mad about listening to this again.

Thought this was my first Taylor Swift, but apparently we already listened to a different album (1989). This is about the same for me. The album was a little overlong, but decent enough. 3/5

Much to my daughters disgust, I have always believed that Taylor Swift is an alien sent to this planet to infiltrate us and commit heinous crimes. I once let her play one of her albums on a car journey and she chose ‘Folklore’ the album before this. Having read up about this on Wiki, I now understand the similarity. I’m amazed to say that i actually like this album. So different from the horrible sickly sweet American High School princess diva pop shit I hated her for. Credit to her for evolving, and the fact that she has made 2 albums with such a folk vibe is showing she is more than I gave her credit for. There are some beautiful tracks on ‘Evermore’, my favourite being the title track at the end of the album. Ms Swift can really sing, some of these songs showcase that, and the harmonies with Bon Iver are just stunning. The album is a bit samey, however, the one track that is different is the one I like the least! (No body no crime). That’s a bit too corny Country and Western Yee Haw nonsense for my liking. I would listen to this album again. Maybe as Ms Swift gets older she’ll start to sing about things more relevant to me (like getting old and grumpy) and I’ll like her more. Was I wrong about her or is her evil now evolving to brainwash a wider audience now that she controls the minds of every young girl under 25. Am I doomed? Crikey. A strong 3, maybe a 4.

I understand the allure, good story telling & plenty to cry along to. I liked no body no crime bc who doesn't enjoy a good murder mystery song

Quite some catchy melodies, but overall I got bored halfway through the album. The intensity doesn't change a lot between songs, making it a mediocre listening experience as an album. Still, the individual songs are quite good, so 3 stars.

As far as Taylor aswifr albums go, this wasn't that bad. It's definitely a departure from her previous country and pop albums. This is more singer songwriter folk oriented. Guest appearances from the National and Bon Iver were surprising. I'm not sure why this is on the list though, it's 3 years old at the point I'm listening to it, there hasn't been any time to see its impact on music as a whole, it wasn't ground breaking in any way. Overall it was a solid album, nothing particularly stood out though.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. Liked it more than I expected to.

I like Taylor Swift taking a more folky direction. Long Story Short was my favourite. The drums kick it up a notch, breaking away from the mood of the songs before. Closure felt a bit disjointed though.

This was the first time that I've listened to more than a soundbite of Taylor Swift (other than Shake it off) - and found it enjoyable. Reminded me of Bat for Lashes with the vocal range and somber tone of most songs on the album.

Taylor swift has controlled pop music since about 2008. This album shows that she isn’t just a pop artist but knows how to make popular music. Throughout the years she has maintained relevance with the style that is en vogue. This album is no different. With the help of some indie artists swift uses a more mature style similar to that of the members of boy genius. But Taylor does it in a more positive upbeat way. Again showing that Taylor swift is the best at what she does. There’s no denying that it this album is still a pop album of romance that misses for me on some songs. The songs with bon iver and the national are cool. Some other songs are catchy and enjoyable as well. This album is good but isn’t worth four stars because I feel she made it intentionally less interesting. 7.3/10

It's an okay album, i've never heard her music so dont know the lore behind

As an avowed straight man (TM), I saved this album for the one time where Taylor was less painful than listening to nothing at all. Which is to say I listened to it while taking the arduous train ride from the Upper West Side to Brooklyn. My difficulty with Taylor comes from the fact that she's seemingly girlboss chameleon'd her way to superstardom. I would laud her versitility if it wasn't soley in service of making more milquetoast pop-generic music. Ultimately, I think my dislike of her is multi-faceted - I don't resonate with her musical themes, I really dislike pop and I hate the impact that "Big Music" has had on homogenizing and shrinking music into bite sound blips. So this isn't a fair review. Musically, the album is great - it's produced with the best of the best, and the collabs should be pure crack for me (HAIM, The National, and Bon Iver on an album - holy fucking shit!). If I am honest, the album nearly lulled me into it. no body, no crime is killer (see my previous comments about songs that tell a story), ivy, marjorie, and dorothea were great tracks, with a special note for dorothea actually transporting me out of the 7 train. However, cowboy like me was a massive thorn in my side - like you? Like the person who dumped their accent between two albums because it was most convenient to selling songs? The person who released folklore and evermore because she got criticized for not being country enough? The person who's currently going on tours so massive that it actually drives inflation in Iceland? That doesn't seem very country to me. Maybe this album is a last grasp at what she has sacrificed on the altar of double platinum rated albums? Because "cowboy like me" felt like such a tone def song that I don't know if she believes it.

So, I'm not a huge fan of Taylor Swift but am exposed to her and music by my lady. Okay. Exposed might be an understatement.... there are shirts and mugs and jewelry and more, strewn around my place. Also.... I own this album from a special edition release, as well as Folklore on vinyl. Regardless, this album was "randomly" delt at the same time as when Taylor Swift seems to be at the highest point of popularity in her entire career with her coming off of world stadium tour, huge movie thing, and news that she is dating Travis Kelce, of the current Superbowl Champions - the Kansas City Chiefs. I ended up listening to most evermore today just to remind myself which album this actually is. I really do get it mixed up with Folklore. I have to say Folklore is a much better album, although there are a couple of songs on evermore that I actually like, with the title track, evermore, being the best song on the album imo.

This was really good. I enjoy Taylor Swifts music. Love the bin over song a lot. This is not her best album.

Not my genre but might become a swifty one day!

Ok, so this is low key Swift. Waited until now to see what the fuss was about. Didn't enjoy much besides the big track on 1989. Midnights was ok but I haven't been back tbh. First track drifted by anonymously. There's some lovely melody in champagne and gold rush, towards the end of each song. There's kind of just enough here for me to stay interested and not dismiss it as bland pop. If I gave it repeat listens I may even grow to really like some of it, but I'm probably not going to do that. It's also too long, and I did get bored around the National track. Spotify now wants me to listen to "Sad Girl Autumn" songs, which kind of says it all.

3 I didn’t really know what to think coming into this one. I have nothing against Taylor Swift, but I don’t claim to be a Swiftie, and I definitely wouldn’t say I have any intentions of becoming one. My friend Sarah is a diehard fan though, especially with Taylor’s newer stuff like this, so I really tried going into this with an open mind so I could at least walk away with an informed opinion on the album. Initial thoughts - this is a far cry away from her t-shirt, sneakers, and bleachers days. I can’t deny its place as a pop album, but there’s a lot more folk influence on this record than I would have anticipated. I like a good amount of folk stuff myself, so I was hoping the sound of this record would be a good starting point for me with her discography, but after an initial listen, I found myself pretty whelmed - there’s not a ton of variation going on in the music or songwriting, and as a result this album felt overly long. Still, I didn’t want to write it off yet - I mean, there must be a reason she’s considered one of the greatest songwriters of the modern era, right? So, I went back in again and gave another listen, this time really trying to dial in on the lyrics and songwriting. While it didn’t drastically change my opinion, I would encourage anyone else on the fence to do the same, as I think it helps enhance your experience in highlighting the charm of Taylor’s songwriting. She’s able to articulate relationships incredibly well in her music, with lyrics like “There'll be happiness after you/But there was happiness because of you/Both of these things can be true” on Happiness or “Never be so kind/You forget to be clever/Never be so clever/You forget to be kind” on Marjorie being two lyrics that stood out to me on my subsequent listen, and Tolerate It? Woof - walked away from that one as a broken man. My personal favorite tracks here though would probably be No Body, No Crime (the older country style was great) and Coney Island (shoutout to my boys The National - Matt sounded great with Taylor here), though I also got a bit of enjoyment out of Closure just for the simple fact it sounded like Taylor was doing her thing over a Nine Inch Nails song. I’m not walking away from this album stunned or as a newfound Swiftie, but I am walking away with a bit more respect for Taylor as an artist and her adoring fans around the world, so I would argue it definitely succeeded with me in some regards. It’s not my thing, but I can appreciate what it’s doing.

i just so happen to have been listening to taylor swift's discography for the first time, so i feel like I'm in a uniquely good position to speak on this album. as the wizened geniuses in the top reviews so bravely point out, taylor swift is a pop musician. hopefully by the time they finish this list they'll have slightly more open minds and maybe have lightened up like 10%. so of course while I'd love to disagree with them, this just isn't that good even as a taylor swift album. coming off the heels of lover and folklore, her two best albums up to this point, this is a huge downgrade. pretty bland, and mostly just feels like a poor imitation of folklore, but more national-y, which to me is not a good thing. it's too scientifically engineered by pop scientists to ever slip into bad, and it has its moments, but it's pretty much the definition of average, and thus, it gets a big ol' 3

A little bit of a nothing album IN MY OPINION! but def makes me want to listen to more Taylor No specific favorite tracks to be real and raw

Nothing thrilling, but didn't hate it

Some nice songs but some silly ones too

I don't want to be prejudiced and say this is for teenage girls but I think this is an album for teenage girls which is fine but I'm not one

some good songs but needs editing

I liked it better than I thought. Songs were more mature than I expected... not sure why.

Reading some of the reviews, it seems obvious to me that many people are rating Taylor Swift’s public persona, or her history as a pop star. I generally don’t listen to top 40 pop either, but there’s no way this album is a 1. At its worst it’s a boring album; at its best it’s comforting. It’s not even overly stylized or purposefully inaccessible to turn people off it. An album by the biggest pop star of her era deserves to be on this list.

Now, I am not a Taylor Swift fan nor am I one of her haters. I like Red. That’s pretty much the only thing that I truly like by her but it is a good album. Everything else, in all honesty, is mid. At least in my opinion. Now, considering how recent the album is, I didn’t expect to get this album here and I still kind of don’t, at least in comparison to some of the actual folk albums I have gotten here. First things first, Evermore is a folk pop album. For what it is it’s pretty good. I feel the pop side can take over and at that point the magic is kind of lost, but it’s still fine. My favorite track of this strict pop style might be Closure, which has a distorted beat that’s actually kind of good. I guess for highlights, I would say Closure, Champagne Problems (a somber piano ballad about a broken relationship that’s actually kind of good and might be the best piano ballad of the bunch), Tis the Damn Season (a soft rock song that may not be the best representation of this album but enjoyable nonetheless), and Tolerate It (another piano ballad that is also enjoyable). Surprisingly, the folk aspect of this album wasn’t brought up too much in this recommendation list. The reason is the lyrics. While some of the lyrics are good (mainly the ones I mentioned earlier), sometimes the lyrics feel too petty or too woeful or just kind of turn offish in my opinion and I just don’t like it. Eh. This was a fine album, certainly different for Taylor Swift but I can only really give it a 6/10 with all of its problems in mind.

Listened Before? N Pretty good. She's recently a very prolific album releaser. This one sounds more like modern t-sweezy, and I enjoyed it. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Willow

A cottagecore T.Swift album about closure? Swift almost feels like the second coming of the Beatles, or Michael Jackson. Or maybe the female Meatloaf? Totally in control of the pop stylings of a generation. I personnally have this predisposition to be pretty critical of her more intimate, sadder songs. Like Jesus Taylor, you are a bajillionaire and your daddy is a rich asshole. What the hell gives you the right to comment on normal people issues? But that's me being classist. 'tis the damn season tapdances with being too cloying. no body no crime is the same thing, though in the styling of an old gun fighter revenge ballad, which i guess i can get behind. happiness is a good song. I actually like her lyrics on ivy. But on other tracks the pithiness of her lyrics are so cringe inducing, see long story short. Making a song that is constant cliches is just not my thing. Ultimately, there are some good tunes on here but I had to work to get through this thing.

I've never been what you would call a Taylor Swift fan, but I've never been a hater either. I'm glad I got to listen to this. The songs are mellow and nuanced, and I like songs that tell a story. It could maybe use a little more variety in terms of tempo, but overall I liked it. Reminds me a little of Suzanne Vega. I actually dislike Suzanne Vega - she's too cutesy-fartsy for me - but this is like a better version of her. 3 stars.

I do not like Taylor Swift very much. I am also perfectly willing to concede that this is a pretty decent album. Well-spun story songs, polished production, downbeat sound. It’s a pleasant listen that achieves the wintry acoustic vibe it’s going for. I also have to admit that despite the folksy window dressing, Taylor Swift is still 100% Taylor Swift, and so the album is only going to go so high for me. I don’t really like her singing voice, and as much praise as her lyrics get, I feel sometimes they're clunky and overwritten in the name of being “heartfelt.” Also, as tired and unfair as it is to scrutinize Taylor’s personal relationships… wow so many Taylor Swift songs are breakup songs. Like SO many. I just wonder if she gets tired of writing them. She has to, right? Best song: willow or no body no crime

Really good by Swift. Standouts: Willow, Champagne Problems, Tis the Damn Season, No Body No Crime, Dorothea, Coney Island, Long Story Short, Marjorie, Tolerate It, Evermore. 3.5/5

I was surprised by this, the front half especially had some rich tracks that I enjoyed. I felt as the album went on it became quite repetitive, not just in lyrical content but even in vocal melody, it felt like that classic Tay Tay melody was in every song. First half album probs a 3.5 for me, second half a weak 2.5, rounding it to a nice 3/5

Some pretty affecting moments of melodrama here, though I found the overall experience a little repetitive. It felt like the kind of album that could have used more of a journey - perhaps a resequencing would help, as it felt like we continually lapsed back into the same subjects covered a couple of songs earlier without much expansion. It's obviously very cleanly produced too, maybe not my preference for a folk album, but when the poppier production elements come in there is some pretty rich tracks. Not mad about it, but a bit over-long and samey to excite. Two and a half. Fave track: Closure

The folklore/evermore era of Taylor's catalogue is, to no surprise, handily my favourite. Her more stripped back songwriting allows for her simple short stories to shine. You can hear the influence and collaboration of the Haim sisters all over this album (not just from the track they actually feature on), and that's always a win for me. Missing some of the next level highlights from folklore that I think are some of her best tracks, and I'll be bummed if that album is omitted from this list in favour of evermore, but this is still a fairly solid record. Three and a half. Fave track: ivy

Good album, surprised such a recent one was on the list

A good example of a well produced stripped back album but it's not all for me, too monotonous overall and doesn't have enough elevating moments in songs. Strong from from no body, no crime through to ivy though.

I like this as an album probably more than the previous Swift album we had, but it lacks the standout hit tracks that she had in that one. It's definitely more sophisticated (musically and lyrically), but she's sacrificed a lot of the energy that she had in the old music. And it drags. 3/5.

Best Song: coney island. I think the addition of The National really elevates this one, providing a really deep, sonorous contrast to Swift's voice. Worst Song: marjorie. Sometimes you can really feel - in a negative way - the effort behind Taylor Swift lyrics. This is one of those tracks, where it feels like an over-emphasized attempt to be deep and meaningful results in some pedestrian, kind of try-hard-sounding poetry. Overall: Taylor Swift is kind of unavoidable, so I had heard a number of these tracks (it also feels like she stays within a particular niche, so I might have heard different tracks that sound like these tracks). She does have a very pleasant and personal songwriting style, but it just gets a little boring over a while. Not my style of slow, mild music, but I get why it's popular.

Not bad. Not great.

Fine but way too safe and hardly her most interest album

So yes this is Taylor Swift but I’ve never listened to one of her albums so that won’t persuade my review despite the onslaught of Swifties I may face. With that being said I thought this album was decent, there wasn’t anything in particular that stood out well for me, however I did like the pacing of the album it felt quiet even so even with the hour long run time it didn’t seem as long and there were a nice collection of songs I liked, particularly on the backend of the record. I do have to say the weaker parts stood out at the front and in the middle, such as the opening track, it didn’t feel like it should’ve opened the album it wasn’t really any different from a track in the middle, unlike the closing track. Also I’m not sure bout particular songs pacing such as ‘gold rush’ that carries this pacing beat throughout with an anti-climax at the end. I do prefer some of the slower songs though such as ‘happiness’ and the closer ‘evermore’ with a great contribution from Bon Iver. Overall, this wasn’t bad by any means but not exactly something I would consider chart topping worthy, I do hope some of her other albums, particularly folklore, are on here as I’ve heard great stuff from them.

I like Folklore a lot more, but this one is ok.

Willow I think it my favorite track of the bunch! Enjoyable listen but a bit too slow for my usual taste.

Modern pop isn’t my thing, but this was decent for the style of music
