Another one to put in the file of "collection of good songs that I like listening to that don't really stand up as a truly great album." The style of singing and instrumentation just isn't enough to sustain me for a full album. Most songs would be welcome on a playlist any old day, though.

It sure started rough but this one really grew on me. It had enough of a punk edge that I didn't mind the new wave elements. I don't know. I worked for me.

the album sounds like it was revolutionary at the time, and it has some lovely songs, but the whole album sounds so similar throughout i couldn't tell when songs ended and started. the lead singer's voice was very monotone throughout the album too.

Extremely British, but not in an endearing way

Having their song Pretty in Pink featured in the movie Pretty in Pink does not render this album worth listening to. There's something about The Psychedelic Furs' sound that gives me a headache.

Disappointing! Thought I’d like it because of their song from Pretty in Pink; nope! The guy is either yelling or talk-singing. Not good!

I like the Furs. This isn’t my favorite however. Half the songs are good, and half are a bit monotonous or monochromatic sounding. 2.5 stars from me but rounding to 3. Good stuff though when it is good. And not bad when it’s not, just a bit dull now and then.

Noo ihan ok!

Definitely not my genre. Was able to listen to entire album while working. It was mostly background noise and was not intrusive at all. Very 80's sound, of course. Reminded me of my college years when so much was foreign to me---clear culture and all.

Pretty in Pink is the highlight, but there's a lot of good material here. It rocks a bit harder than what I was expecting. Overall I liked it. 3 stars.

What a killer album! How had I never listened to this before!? Such an interesting saxophone hook to open an album… got me from the first note.

Pretty into this. Interesting post punky new wave stuff that still felt quite fresh. A couple of in one ear out the other tracks, but this was sticky and had my ears perked up as I worked. Three and a half. Fave track: All of This and Nothing

Rating: 6.5/10 Good album overall. I enjoyed the band's sound, rock with psychedelic elements. A lot of catchy melodies and cool guitar riffs. Some songs are really forgettable though. Favorite songs: Dumb Waiters, Pretty in Pink, Mr. Jones, It Goes On, All of This and Nothing. Worst song: I Wanna Sleep With You.

Not bad for a punkish album. Nothing stands out as too special or ear-catching.

I think I only know the Psychedelic Furs from the song Pretty In Pink. I’ve never seen the film before, but I once had an 80’s movie soundtrack playlist on frequent rotation in my car. Those songs just bop so hard. Songs I already knew: Pretty In Pink Favourites: Pretty In Pink This is another album that I hoped to like more than I actually did. It didn’t have as much of an 80s sound as I expected, so perhaps I went in with the wrong expectation. The first track left a sour taste in my mouth as there seemed to be a lot of purposefully untuned instruments. Otherwise, this felt like a lot of fairly generic rock music that left no lasting impression. Not bad, but not great. Pretty In Pink definitely slaps though.

Just not my era

Vaguely familiar from my youth which featured New Wave of this era heavily. Rocks pretty hard in that laconic English way, the singing brushes the lower end of ability to a degree that you wonder at them getting away with it. But for this it works. Probably slightly overrating out of nostalgia.

Kind of hated the first song - mostly due to that main out-of-town hook, which I'm sure was an artistic choice, but nonetheless ruined the song for me. Amazingly, outside of that I enjoyed most of the rest of the album. Or, at least in relation to that first one; there are certainly other dismal moments. But this is one of those bands that I've heard of but never properly digested, so this at least piqued my interest to check out their other music.

Nothing differentiates this from many other 80s post-punk/new wave banks for me. That meaning it's totally passable and competent but nothing I'd single out to listen to. I guess the biggest notable item here is that Pretty in Pink served as inspiration for the film's name. Word.

I listened to this quite a bit as a teenager but haven't engaged with it for years. It's definitely a more radio friendly album than the Furs' debut album and it has some good songs, although a lot of them strike me now as one-note. The judicious use of squonky sax adds a welcome dose of texture to the songs without veering into the annoying. The general tone of the album can best be described as emotionally arid. It's interesting enough with some flashes of creativity, and it's a solid listen as post punk albums go. But these songs aren't really designed to make you feel much of anything. I remember this band from back in the day and back then I thought they were OK but I wasn’t a huge fan. Not much has changed over the years.

I had forgotten how good some of the lesser-known songs were, like "No Tears" and Mister Jones". Overall the production is a bit sludgy with the instruments taking a back seat, so nothing distracts us from Richard Butler's raspy voice and lyrics about love, loss and alienation. There are a lot of catchy choruses here for one album! Between a 4 and a 5 for me.

The Furs certainly were one of the better post-punk, new wavey groups in the early 80s and this album features probably their biggest single. Richard Butler actually has a great voice for this genre, but like others have noted most of the album after the first two songs sounds very samey.

Its alright but nothing special that had my flabbergasted. Solid Record but ive listened to so much english rock music in general that it needs more to flash me. I wish they actually did psychedelic music on this record.

I enjoy the sonic palette that The Psychedelic Furs play with, but the songs get a little samey, with the exception of Mr. Jones, which is superb. Possible I was not in the right headspace, though.

new wave is so cool. I wish England was real

Love the sax melody on Dumb Waiters. They do a good job of creating a sort of post-punk template with more pop sensibilities. The sax adds a lot to their overall melodic sound and it makes me happy everytime it comes on. Drums are the huge banging reverby type that were de rigeur in the 80's. They remind me of a more brooding INXS, and overall feel like they did a good job threading the needle between the dourness of New Order/Joy Division and more overt pop of Duran Duran and Tears for Fears, and it seems easy to trace the thread more modern Brit post-punk back to the Furs.

New Wave with a touch of Goth, or Goth with a touch of new wave. Either way works. Cracking album.

Meh fell flat for me.

Excellent! One of my all-time favorites bands from the 80s!

I was looking forward to this one because I love the song Pretty in Pink, but I was disappointed to find the remainder of this album a cacophony of noise. Too much dissonance in the sound, too much faux punk attitude. I just… I feel letdown I guess. Thought this would be my jams, but alas, it is not.

This is maybe the prototypical 80s album. It’s be high on the list of albums to recommend when someone asks what 80s music is like

The album was alright. I did jot recognize any of the songs. I didn't skip any songs. It was just there. I guess I will round up.

As a person who grew up in the 80s and was reared on John Hughes movies, I certainly enjoy Pretty in Pink as a song for the sentimentality of it, but nothing else about these guys has ever really blown my skirt up. Album is fine, but I'm probably never gonna sit down and listen to it in its entirety again.

I liked this one quite a lot. It's infectiously catchy, with an energy that kept me invested throughout. There's some elements of post-punk and pop thrown into it, but its rock DNA shines through. There is some excellent sax-playing in there too. (RIP Mars Williams) I can totally see how this might not be a popular one outside of the UK though; there's no hiding the accent, and to an American it probably produces the same kind of feeling I get from hearing American country singers with a real Southern twang to their accent. Regardless, this was a really good album, and I bet it was somewhat of an inspiration for British indie and britpop acts that came later. Favourite: Dumb Waiters

Execution was fine instrumentally and there were a few Melodie’s that caught my ear, but nothing stuck with me after the fact. Not bland per se, but not exactly memorable either.

So I tried to listen to this one more intently than I have the last few albums and I definitely feel like I got more out of it than I would have otherwise. Unfortunately, it was still a mostly unnotable 80s English rock album. They did some interesting stuff with the keyboard on dumb waiters and pretty in pink I'm pretty sure is the hit I've heard before. The rest was just fine but even though I listened closer I don't think I'll remember it any better.

Great album! Not one I had listened to previously, but I am sure I will come back to it again. Hidden gem. 4/5

Pretty good. Gets better with multiple listens as it can just slip into background noise. The lyrics can be silly and ridiculous, but somewhat fun or funny. And there are multiple tracks with some smooth saxophone, that I wish there was more of.

The instrumentals were really good and captured the elements of what people like about 80's music. However the singer's voice was hard to listen to.

The Psychedelic Furs as a band are a class act. I've seen them a few times live with the first show being the most memorable. It was an intimate setting & got to shake Richard Butler's hand as he was performing & caught his brother, Tim's, guitar pick. Of all the stories I hear of 80s bands still touring, I hear nothing but praises for this band & Richard specifically - he truly appreciates his fans. Pretty In Pink is an 80s staple & the movie is my second favorite all-time film. The rest of the album is classic Furs with Richard's raspy vocals, Mars William's sax, and a nice balance between post punk & new wave. RIP to Mars Williams who recently lost his battle to cancer. If you liked this album, take a listen at the rest of their work. It's great stuff. 4.5 stars.

I love the Psychedelic Furs. Got a chance to see them play a few years back. This is not my favourite of their albums though. But still a good listen.

I forget how much I like this band. A solid rock band with just the right amount of idiosyncratic touches to make them stand out from the rest of the 80s New Wavers. And anyone who loves Molly Ringwald loves this band.

I've never heard more than a handful of PF songs before today, in fact I'm more familiar with punk covers of their songs. This album was really good. I'll definitely go back to it and probably seek out more.

It's funny how some of the scenes emphasized on this list really annoy me (like 90s-00s Brit Pop), and some scenes I really enjoy. Post-punk is definitely one of the latter. I don't have a lot to say about this album that I haven't said about previous post-punk albums, but this album is really cool. More explicitly sexual subject matter than was often present in punk/post punk, which is neat. I don't love the singer's voice, but he makes it work 4/5

This list is plagued with 80s British post-punk/new wave records. This one was no different. The singer's voice got on my nerves as the record went on, which is typical of these records. I did like the instrumentals.

I like this band - it’s good punk and punk is good for me - but while it starts strong - it tapers off into the background and samey-ness quite quickly despite its short length. Unhappily I don’t feel I can rate it highly.

Overall this album is psychedelic or furry enough! The start of the album felt a bit of a mish mash of all sorts of music but The middle part of this album is incredible! Some absolute bangers. 3.5

I can tell from the album art alone that this is going to be british pop/punk. According to their wiki this album is actually pretty highly rated.... so far it sounds pretty standard. Has a much brighter and happier undertone than I was expecting, so far I don't dislike it but it's kind of disappearing into the background. These songs seem a bit too long for what they are, and it really doesn't envelope the feel of british punk.

The song inspired the movie! I had no idea. Many songs are much edgier.

The sounds of the 70s dying out into the 80s. Despite all the mediocre British music from this period I've been subjected to on this list thus far this one stood out just enough to get a 3.

Rock New wave

This is way heavier than I expected based on the band name and cover art. I really like the aggression of the vocals and the weirdness of the instrumental. As the record went on, the vocals started to wear me down. I also didn't find the songwriting very memorable.

Being familiar with later hits of theirs, this was an interesting venture into their earlier stuff. Like a lot of 80s new wave bands I've listened to in this project, what we've gotten to hear is a bit rougher around the edges. Although I thought I knew a good selection of Psychedelic Furs songs, there weren't any tunes I knew, except a rougher version of "Pretty in Pink." As with many of these early career albums of 80s "modern rock," I was more interested in examining the band's journey than really enjoying the music.

Definitely more enjoyable than I imagined that it would be. Some bright and bouncy beats. Yeah, not bad.

For the second time in just a few days, we have an album that I thought I'd be luke-warm on, at best, based on scant familiarity with the artist but on listening, I find myself really enjoying the sound and thinking, I would definitely listen to this again. I didn't think this kind of 80s alternative was my thing but who knows what my thing is anymore. I liked this a lot!

Interesting that I’ve likely never heard any of these songs before, although I am very familiar with the 1986 re-recording of Pretty In Pink from the movie. This version was a bit different. That made this album a completely new listen. I enjoyed it. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting - there was a lot more going on than the 80s hits I am familiar with would have implied. Really interesting and good, and one of those albums I think I like a lot more now than if I’d heard it back in the day.

Is there a better singer to enjoy spoofing as you sing? That slightly flat delivery in a home countries accent as we all sing Pretty in Pink. Jangly guitars, strident drums and that distinctive voice, Psychedelic Furs had something going on if a little of its time.

Vocals and monotonous songwriting ruin it for me

Started off strong but very quickly dipped into repetitive and forgettable. It's good New Wave, don't get me wrong, with strong atmospheric synths, a fun dance vibe, recognizable raunchy vocals, mechanical production, and even some cool horns. And I was impressed by the first three songs. "Dumb Waiters" and "I Wanna Sleep With You" are eery intense gothic songs, while "Pretty in Pink" is a generational pop song. But after that, it was standard New Wave formulae. It's a shame because I had high hopes, not just from the first 3 songs, but because "Love My Way" is one of my favorite New Wave songs. "All of This and Nothing" slowed things down and it works out pretty well, reminding me of The The, but I think they could have taken it further, especially for its length. "She is Mine" was a soothing fitting closer.

I may enjoy but I don’t think that I can ever be fan

For a band named Psychedelic Furs I was hoping for something a little more... colorful? Imagine Green Day meets Smashing Pumpkins. Vocals were uninspiring, guitar was bland (only time it stuck out was on It Goes On), and the tempo stayed more or less the same front to back. Listening to this album was like eating a plate of unseasoned chicken and rice. I like chicken and I like rice. But I need some more flavor in there to make it interesting.

I've heard a few songs by The Psychedelic Furs over the years so I was excited to listen to this album. It was good but did not quite live up to my expectations. I still really enjoyed listening though and would definitely listen to a few of these songs in the future. 3/5

"I had to pay the doorman just to let me use the door. I had to use a muscleman to pick me off the floor" I was pretty excited to listen to a Psychedelic Furs album, as I really love the song "Love my Way," and my dad (having been a teenager in the 80s) told me that The Psychedelic Furs were one of the bigger bands, influence-wise, in his high-school, along with the Cure, the Smiths, and others. Upon listening to the album, I was pretty disappointed with what the furs had to offer. There were some songs with fairly good musical ideas behind them, such as: T1- "Dumb Waiters," and T2- "Pretty in Pink" (playlist track). But, much more frequently I found the songs to have very surface-level lyrics that were borderline embarrassing to be listening to, with uninteresting vocals over mediocre music, even if the music is in the genre that I prefer over most others. Due mostly to the genre, the band's influence, and those first 2 tracks, the album will not get a 2/5, but rather a... 3/5

Cool. I like it.

This is and it isn't. It has songs, swagger and fun but it's also flat, samey and ultimately uninspiring. I think I'd have liked it a whole lot more back in 1981.

"Talk Talk Talk" No. Stop talking. As this album has interesting instrumentals, but is utterly ruined by that voice. It activates my fight and flight response.

Between being simple and extremely clever this raw guitar driven garage pop/rock proves to have aged VERY well. 3.9

"Pretty In Pink": it starts with an interesting verse, with some nice instrumentation supprporting a raucous vocal performance. Then a promising pre-chorus surges. And then... No chorus. Then nothing much, really. We're back to the verse, played by a band that basically goes through the motions. The song cycles on itself--a little hypnotic, but not enough to justify all the repetitive patterns in it. Being a single, "Pretty In Pink" is supposedly one of the most striking tracks on the album. But to be honest, it's a bit of a letdown, as is everything else in this record--especially compared to other post-punk acts around 1981 (Wire, Gang Of Four, Siouxsie And the Banshees, Joy Division, The Cure, Magazine...). As for the supposedly "psychedelic" and proto-punk influences on this LP, they might give some whiffs of originality to the whole thing, but sadly, *Talk Talk Talk*' compositions are nothing compared to the ones of, say, The Soft Boys' *Underwater Moonlight*. Now here was a record owing to prepunk times that could leave an imprint on your mind from the very first listen. Pretty sure that ten listens in, it's still impossible to hum or whistle Psychedelic Furs songs in your shower. Not that all "essential" albums need to be whistled or hummed. Post-punk / new wave was not *all* about that, considering you could relate The Psychedelic Furs to that early eighties subgenre. But if you can't hum or whistle a band's output, what you need from them is some real groove (Gang Of Four), some cinematic atmosphere (Wire, The Cure), some real tension (Joy Division), or some strong gothic flavours coupled with truly memorable harmonies and a vocal performance for the ages (Siouxsie And The Banshees). And *Talk Talk Talk* has none of those. To put it in a nutshell, the music in this album is not inherently bad. It's just that it's not "essential". 2/5 for the purposes of this list, translating to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes. Next, please... 10/10 I’ve heard a fair bit from The Psychedelic Furs before, and I’ve absolutely loved all of it I’m surprised I haven’t just gone through their entire discography yet

This was definitely a predecessor to grunge. Which surprised me since my only knowledge was pretty in pink. Some of the songs are a little samey, but pretty good

Yes, essential. Yes. Look, there's nothing to scoff at here, and I found the whole thing pretty catchy. I'm not sure how monumental it is, since there are roughly 300 other albums on this list that sound exactly like this (and today is #995 for me, so I can say that with authority.

This was a relatively quick and average album by the furs. I liked their other one since it had their more mainstream hits. This one was alright some of the songs were light and comical. For this list it was a decent album but in general I wouldn’t say this is that great or revisit it much. 5.9/10

I was never a fan.

Loud band with sardonic (and borderline misogynistic) frontman. Pretty is Pink was a great single, but his voice palls over the length of an album, and it all starts to sound pretty much the same. I like the breakdown at 1:33 of It Goes On. That's a pretty muscular rhythm section. I could live without all the saxophones.

I knew of them and liked some of their songs in the 80s, but never really listened to any of their albums all the way through. This one is edgier than I've usually thought of them. Even this version of "Pretty In Pink," which is the original version, is grittier than the one I know from the 1986 film (I also probably assumed at the time that The Psychedelic Furs recorded a song just for the movie -- I know now that they recorded a new version of and that it's the original song that inspired the movie). Definitely has that London-punk-pop-rock sound of the early 80s.

This is a band I haven't spent a lot of time with this band but their music was better than i remember. I loved the mix of punk and new wave sounds.

"Dumb Waiters" was the best track on the album. I liked "Pretty In Pink" before the remastered version; oh well. "I Wanna Sleep With You" and "All of This and Nothing" were the standout tracks for me. The rest of the tracks all sort of morphed into one another and didn't jump out at me all that much. The Furs were big when I was in high school. I'd probably have liked them better if 2 of the 3 songs (Love My Way and Heartbreak Beat) that got regular airplay, had done more for me.

This post-punk record really emphasizes the punk aspect of that genre. The album was enjoyable the whole way through, but I felt like the second half was really where it started to shine. This album was recorded before the Psychedelic Furs incorporated more pop influences so its rock influences are front and center. The guitar and bass are driving and incorporate psychedelic, hard rock, and overtly punk elements to create something that sounds unique in post-punk.

Combination of my two least favourite types of music: punk and 80’s.

I'm surprised i've never listened to The Furs before as their post-punk sound is right up my alley. Had a great time listening to this. All was new to me except for Pretty In Pink which i recognised instantly. Looking forward to hearing it again.

Pretty fun, but not really better than any of the other new wave or post punk greats. Probably not even The Psychedelic Furs' best album. Still good though, solid 3.5

Post-Punk meh

Pretty in Pink is good. Bass and drums are excellent. Vocal always irritated me, but the sound for 1981 is good post punk and pre stadium rock. Not brilliant, but they did have a huge cult following.

Butler is seriously underrated as a vocalist and frontman – he's got the essential indie rock voice. But the playing and instrumentation (especially some ace sax touches) and arrangements are all strong. "P in P" very much merited a movie named after it – what a hook, what a mix of the salty (Butler's sneering vocal) and sweet (the melody). "No Tears" and "She Is Mine" are also plus-plus tunes. A seriously underrated band, the Furs. Forever Now would also be worthy of inclusion on this list.

The combination of the slickness of new wave and the edginess of post punk is an interesting one. Heralds the dawn of a new decade.

Fantastic blend of post-punk/alt rock/new wave. More 'punk' than Talking Heads. Dumb Waiters is such a fun song

Opens well with “Dumb Waiters” and I was genuinely quite excited that this could go on to be a snorter of an album… The next few tracks are pretty cool, jangly guitars with a Smiths feel to it and some vocals that could be Bowie going punk so that was ticking the boxes for sure! Tails off a bit in the middle with a couple of throwaway basic filler tracks then picks up with “So Run Down” Really good album with just a wee dip but defo one for the future too!

Pelkäsin jo, että olen alkanut lyttäämään näitä brittejä tottumuksesta, mutta täähän oli tosi kova! Tietty vanhempien levyjen kohdalla brittinostot ovat olleet usein ihan hyviä. Sen tyylinen levy, että voisin vinskalle haluta, täytyy pitää mielessä.

Not at all excited to see another UK album from 1981 but there’s actually a lot to like here. Building on the foundations, this is a kind of post-punk I can get behind. Curled lip attitude but with a bit of skill and craft going into it. I can hear a lot of other artists taking influence from these guys including: The Cult, Billy Bragg, The Libertines, Ride, Green Day and I’m sure many more.

A little more guitar heavy than I would have thought from an 80s album like this. Still not my favorite though. Kind of boring.

Not for me

One of the albums (just like Talk Talk's Laughing Stock) that for some reason you could practically buy for free in every record store in the nineties in the Netherlands. And so I did at the time. One of my favourite albums from the 80s and not sure which of the first four Psychedelic Furs albums is the best one. Talk Talk Talk contains the original Pretty in Pink - I prefer their 86 Americanish movie version, but this version fits the rest of the album much better.

Sounded mostly okay. Music a bit too messy in places. Not a fan of the vocals.

The characteristic vocals, the saxophone, overall consistent and enjoyable song material: a nice surprise!

Like the vocals and style, doesn't excite too much overall however. 3.7

Truly a classic pop-punk-new-wave-whatever album. 4 stars.

This was very samey... but just fun and vibrant enough to earn it a fourth star. It's the type of 80's that I can't help but smile at.

Well, that was 80's British post-punk album number 126 on this list. At least that's what it feels like. Nothing new, nothing interesting, next.

Una bona descoberta. Era una banda que sempre m'havien passat sota el radar; el poc que havia sentit d'ells no havia fet que m'interessessin. Error. 'Pretty in Pink' és un dels millors temes de començaments dels '80s. I tot el disc en sí es especial. Post punk, new wave passat pel filtre del Bowie del moment i amb una veu molt pròpia. A conservar!

A fun early 80s album

Album 128 of 1001 The Psychedelic Furs - Talk Talk Talk Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Pretty in Pink So 1980s. Thought I was listening to a John Hughes soundtrack, at times. A bit poppier than I expected. Nothing bad to say about it. Good album for those who enjoy the genre.

Tension in the interaction between Furs' name, sound, style, and instrumentation generates plenty of satisfying spikes. The quality of songs, at first blush, is equally uneven. The pop backing is sturdy enough to hold the album up, turning into the foreground. Personally, the only thing inspiring a return is something like a string, when it appears.

Didn’t like most tracks but more because they were kinda ehh. But there were some okay ones in the form of mr jones and all of this and nothing.

Musically quite enjoyable, but I don't dig the singer all that much. Probabaly won't dive into this band again unless I hear something very interesting from them. 6 out of 10

Christ, another album from 1981 that has a similar name and album art to everything else from 1981 here. Is it going to be post punk/new wave garbage? Course it is. UK? Yeah, probably. Yep, English new wave punk garbage. Singer rips off Johnny rotten. Boring. 2/5.

Great album I have missed. I don’t know why but it was not on list.

One has always found Psyche Furs and Richard Butler to be pretty underrated. He's got a great – perhaps the essential post-punk voice, capable of both murderous sneering and tender vulnerability. "Pretty in Pink" is a wonderful melding of punk-light and sweet pop melodies (a combination this band well and truly mastered) and "She Is Mine" is right up one's alley, sweet and melancholic. They got way quality mileage out of the sax playing – these post-punk bands knew how to bring the brass and integrate it non-obviously and non-obnoxiously. The other cuts are mostly solid, if not major, and a 4 slightly flatters this effort, which one likes slightly less than Forever Now. But the 4 is worthy in the sense that all of their records were above average, ++ and under-appreciated. So there we are.
