Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I would like this a lot more if discount David Bowie wasn’t the one singing.
If all of the songs on Talk Talk Talk were Pretty In Pink this would be an easy five. But they aren't.
sì per la serie piacevole e dimenticabile
3.5
Good soulful R&B album, whitney houston vibes
The Psychedelic Furs made post-punk songs that became very successful pop songs. Their danceable, guitar driven songs have the energy of punk songs and the distinct sound of Richard Butler's deep voice. Talk Talk Talk is their second album, and includes what may be their most famous song, "Pretty in Pink."
Totally fine! It didn't leave in huge impression on me tbh. Quite indecipherable song from song. It's not awful though obvs
Yeah not bad but nothing amazing. I've got the drummer's table and BBQ in my garden. True fact.
Good album with a mix of post punk and pop, but just felt a bit samey throughout, not one I’ll come back to I suspect.
This is an interesting one. There are points where the album feels like it's dragging on for an eternity, and there are points where I feel like I could live in the basslines for the rest of my life. This is my first time listening to a full Psychedelic Furs album...I think they might just be best reserved for playlists for me even though I really do love some of these moments. Favorite track: Mr. Jones
I’ve heard of this album but never listened. It sounded exactly like I thought it would…and that’s not a good thing. It’s just fine.
Interesting listen
Didn't love, but liked.
The only song I know the Psych Furs by was the Pretty In Pink track. It was fun to hear the whole album and put some context around it. I think I'll need to revisit this at least once, but for now lets call it a 3. Super 80s. Love the thick accents. Call me a US nob.
This was fine, nothing really stood out as really good or bad. Probably wouldn't listen to it again, but I didn't hate it. 3/5
Wouldn’t listen again but didn’t mind it either.
It was alright. All the songs kinda sound the same, like your stereotypical 80s new wave rock. It's not a bad sound, but I was pretty okay with the album being over when I was done with it.
This was pretty decent. I'd heard Pretty in Pink before but not really any of their other stuff. Man this british post-punk period was seriously into saxophone.
AVERAGE, voice is horrendous
Eh, I'unno. As New Wave, it's not as weird as Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO!, and it's not polished as, say, RIO. It sits kind of in the middle, and as a result, it's fine, but not terribly interesting my ears. I 100% dug "She Is Mine", though, so you can have that at least.
The definition of a 3, really. I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all, but it never really makes the jump past “good” – Pretty in Pink is pretty fun, as are 2 or 3 other tracks, but this album feels like it’s missing a specific type of signature song. That doesn’t even mean a super commercial hit or anything, it just needs something that really defines their style and stands out, and I just never found that here. It is 1981 rock, which occasionally dips backwards into the late 70s and occasionally dips forward into some mid-80s R.E.M. type of soundscapes, but it never really settles into a spot where I found myself super deeply engaged with any one song, hence the 3.
Modestly interesting.
I feel this is very of the moment it's time. It sounded like a cohesive album all together, but I wasn't that interested.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Just because you know how to play that awful instrument on the opening song, doesn’t mean you should play that instrument on the opening song.
Rating: 7/10 Highlights: Pretty in Pink, Into You Like A Train
All of This and Nothing'. 7/10 Highlights: Dumb Waiters Pretty In Pink All of This and Nothing
Into You Like a Train lijkt echt te ver op Pretty in Pink.
Meh, I don't think this is anything special. Definitely sounds like it's from the 80s.
Pretty good
After listening to Talk Talk Talk, it was actually pretty good if a bit of a mixed bag in some cases. The songs for the most part all had really cool melodies and just a really groovy and energetic nature but some could get a little much at points. The singing also worked rather well too with the unapologetically British accent that the singer had and i like those in some songs. This album is a rather good listen and the good outweighs the bad here. Best Song: I Wanna Sleep With You Worst Song: Dumb Waiters
Really enjoyed listening to this, can't say I was ever a fan in the past but some happy times remembered listening to this. Probably won't listen again but wouldn't say no
It's a real good new wave record. First two tracks are excellent. Some of it as others have said is a bit bland with some cringe lyrics. I Just Want to Sleep With You lets the side down on both fronts. Broadly speaking this is a good record rather than a particular essential one, it's probably not stood the test of time as well as others in it's ouvre. No Tears was another standout, however much of the second half is a bit samey.
80s fun
A good 3*. Bit repetitive but fun stuff. 68/100
3.8 - A consistently solid British new wave record that features lots of growly, jagged guitars. Standouts: "Into You Like a Train", "Pretty in Pink", Mr. Jones."
The first track is dark and edgy and has a weird saxophone(??) riff, so I thought I could be in for a fun ride. This sound does return on a few more songs but never quite as well, and a lot of it felt more like stuff I’ve heard before from other bands. I grew a bit weary of the vocals, too. But all in all, pretty good. I think I’d have been a fan of these guys if I’d been around in the early 80s. 3.5
Doing this project I have learned that for the most part I do not enjoy 80’s post-punk/new wave music. It’s just not my thing.
Meh. It was fine. Really wasn’t in the mood for this
Standouts include Dumb Waiters and Pretty In Pink.
Notable tracks, Pretty in Pink, No Tears
Featuring an all-time classic single this is certainly an album chock full of wonderful licks. The punk and post punk influence flows heavy and each gets shine on this on the whole. A very good album that stand up to modern scrutiny.
It was okay, but a little patchy in places. Some songs sounded vaguely like Hawkwind from around the same era (maybe the sax?), which was enough for me to push this up from a dismal 2 to an average 3.
A bit drab. I also found the recording quality poor, the sound was dull. Apart from PiP, the album was forgettable
I can hear why this record is important to music, but it's not for me.
Decent, might listen to it again in the future
Some nice new wave, definitely has songs that I’d want to return to
Helt ååkåå
I initially thought this was Talk Talk by Talk Talk but no; it is Talk Talk Talk. Pretty in Pink is, of course, iconic, deservedly so. The rest of the album is, shall we say, consistent. I happen to like what it is doing pretty well. But I think reasonable people could disagree and find Talk Talk Talk pretty monotonous.
Pretty good album, with a few especially good tunes on it. They're at their best when they slow down the tempo a little.
It’s ok
n 80's standard. Good Sound - noted for Pretty in Pink. I am a Furs Fan, but not their greatest
Just Okay - 3 stars
I really enjoyed the first half, a lot of great songs I’d never heard before but as Ben said, twists on more famous sounds, but it dropped off in the back end.
Good new wave rock with a nice 80s sheen on it. They’ve got a cool sound. It’s hard rock with an ear for pop stylings. I like how horns enter the mix in an organic way.
Not a bad album but not one that I think I'll want to reach for. I'm not a fan of the singer's voice kind of right from the start. Luckily the band has a cool vibe and kept me interested. The mix sounds weird to me but oddly enough I like it. The horns are cool and there's like super low volume reed instruments interwoven with many many guitar parts. They all combine together and make for something cool sounding. It's cacophonous at times (like listen to "I Just Want to Sleep With You", man it's a cool sound but it is muddy!), but I think I like it because it's different. Lots of songs have a nice driving sound to it on the record which I liked!
Not really my kind of music, but perfectly fine
It started well, but for some reason that I didn't identify, it finishes just like any generic rock album that will stay in my memory for some hours and then go away forever.
Eh
Another one to put in the file of "collection of good songs that I like listening to that don't really stand up as a truly great album." The style of singing and instrumentation just isn't enough to sustain me for a full album. Most songs would be welcome on a playlist any old day, though.
Not an album that stuck out to me, but it was a good listen Top tracks: She Is Mine
the album sounds like it was revolutionary at the time, and it has some lovely songs, but the whole album sounds so similar throughout i couldn't tell when songs ended and started. the lead singer's voice was very monotone throughout the album too.
a typical uk new wave album. not spectacular. not bad.
At the melodic and poppy end of the post punk / new wave spectrum. I liked it. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: Pretty in Pink Date listened: 18/01/24
I like the Furs. This isn’t my favorite however. Half the songs are good, and half are a bit monotonous or monochromatic sounding. 2.5 stars from me but rounding to 3. Good stuff though when it is good. And not bad when it’s not, just a bit dull now and then.
Enjoyed some tracks more than others. Very nostalgic and classic example of 80's new music
Nothing too amazing going on here, but a solid set of rock tracks worth a single listen
Fun punk album.
Noo ihan ok!
Definitely not my genre. Was able to listen to entire album while working. It was mostly background noise and was not intrusive at all. Very 80's sound, of course. Reminded me of my college years when so much was foreign to me---clear culture and all.
Pretty in Pink is the highlight, but there's a lot of good material here. It rocks a bit harder than what I was expecting. Overall I liked it. 3 stars.
Pretty into this. Interesting post punky new wave stuff that still felt quite fresh. A couple of in one ear out the other tracks, but this was sticky and had my ears perked up as I worked. Three and a half. Fave track: All of This and Nothing
Rating: 6.5/10 Good album overall. I enjoyed the band's sound, rock with psychedelic elements. A lot of catchy melodies and cool guitar riffs. Some songs are really forgettable though. Favorite songs: Dumb Waiters, Pretty in Pink, Mr. Jones, It Goes On, All of This and Nothing. Worst song: I Wanna Sleep With You.
New wave. Ni fu ni fa.
post-punk
I think I only know the Psychedelic Furs from the song Pretty In Pink. I’ve never seen the film before, but I once had an 80’s movie soundtrack playlist on frequent rotation in my car. Those songs just bop so hard. Songs I already knew: Pretty In Pink Favourites: Pretty In Pink This is another album that I hoped to like more than I actually did. It didn’t have as much of an 80s sound as I expected, so perhaps I went in with the wrong expectation. The first track left a sour taste in my mouth as there seemed to be a lot of purposefully untuned instruments. Otherwise, this felt like a lot of fairly generic rock music that left no lasting impression. Not bad, but not great. Pretty In Pink definitely slaps though.
Kind of hated the first song - mostly due to that main out-of-town hook, which I'm sure was an artistic choice, but nonetheless ruined the song for me. Amazingly, outside of that I enjoyed most of the rest of the album. Or, at least in relation to that first one; there are certainly other dismal moments. But this is one of those bands that I've heard of but never properly digested, so this at least piqued my interest to check out their other music.
Nothing differentiates this from many other 80s post-punk/new wave banks for me. That meaning it's totally passable and competent but nothing I'd single out to listen to. I guess the biggest notable item here is that Pretty in Pink served as inspiration for the film's name. Word.
I listened to this quite a bit as a teenager but haven't engaged with it for years. It's definitely a more radio friendly album than the Furs' debut album and it has some good songs, although a lot of them strike me now as one-note. The judicious use of squonky sax adds a welcome dose of texture to the songs without veering into the annoying. The general tone of the album can best be described as emotionally arid. It's interesting enough with some flashes of creativity, and it's a solid listen as post punk albums go. But these songs aren't really designed to make you feel much of anything. What felt cool and aloof to me in the 80s strikes me more as hollow now. Fave Songs: Dumb Waiters, Pretty in Pink, Into You Like a Train, It Goes On, All of This and Nothing
Solid early 80’s post punk. With another big song or two, could have been a little higher rating. 3.75
I enjoy the sonic palette that The Psychedelic Furs play with, but the songs get a little samey, with the exception of Mr. Jones, which is superb. Possible I was not in the right headspace, though.
Love the sax melody on Dumb Waiters. They do a good job of creating a sort of post-punk template with more pop sensibilities. The sax adds a lot to their overall melodic sound and it makes me happy everytime it comes on. Drums are the huge banging reverby type that were de rigeur in the 80's. They remind me of a more brooding INXS, and overall feel like they did a good job threading the needle between the dourness of New Order/Joy Division and more overt pop of Duran Duran and Tears for Fears, and it seems easy to trace the thread more modern Brit post-punk back to the Furs.
This is maybe the prototypical 80s album. It’s be high on the list of albums to recommend when someone asks what 80s music is like
Meinaan aina panna Psychedeloc fursin samaan kategoriaan Cocteau twinsin kanssa, mutta onhan tää paljon parempaa: on esim. luonnetta. Eka biisi ja Pretty in pink oikein hyviä.
Rajatapaus. Bändin soundi on kiinnostava: post-jotain, totta kai, mutta samalla laulajasta tulee mieleen jopa UK Subhumansien vokalisti, ja taustalla kuuluu arvostus rock'n'rollia kohtaan. Olenko riittävän kiinnostunut kuuntelemaan uudelleen? Olen. Entä tulevaisuudessa? Ainakaan Pretty in Pink ei lähde helpolla mielestä.
The album was alright. I did jot recognize any of the songs. I didn't skip any songs. It was just there. I guess I will round up.
As a person who grew up in the 80s and was reared on John Hughes movies, I certainly enjoy Pretty in Pink as a song for the sentimentality of it, but nothing else about these guys has ever really blown my skirt up. Album is fine, but I'm probably never gonna sit down and listen to it in its entirety again.
Pop-rock sencillo sin grandes estridencias. Estilo muy elegido por muchas bandas. Escuchable, sin más
So I tried to listen to this one more intently than I have the last few albums and I definitely feel like I got more out of it than I would have otherwise. Unfortunately, it was still a mostly unnotable 80s English rock album. They did some interesting stuff with the keyboard on dumb waiters and pretty in pink I'm pretty sure is the hit I've heard before. The rest was just fine but even though I listened closer I don't think I'll remember it any better.
post-punk
Not bad, but not great.
3.5/5
It feels like a Brat Pack movie, because it is.
Pop-like 80's underground. Not bad, but nothing amazing.
Not my favorite but pretty good
Creative but kinda irritating.
Adequate.
The blurred line between post-punk and new wave.
I like this band - it’s good punk and punk is good for me - but while it starts strong - it tapers off into the background and samey-ness quite quickly despite its short length. Unhappily I don’t feel I can rate it highly.
Overall this album is psychedelic or furry enough! The start of the album felt a bit of a mish mash of all sorts of music but The middle part of this album is incredible! Some absolute bangers. 3.5
Strong start, less strong finish.
Dumb Waiters - 8.5/10 Pretty In Pink - 7.5/10 I Wanna Sleep With You - 8/10 No Tears - 7.5/10 Mr. Jones - 8/10 Into You Like a Train - 7.5/10 It Goes On - 7/10 So Run Down - 8/10 All Of This And Nothing - 8/10 She Is Mine - 8/10 TOTAL - 78/100
Okay, not amazing
Pretty decent, 3.75*
Not bad but can’t give it more than 3/5
The song inspired the movie! I had no idea. Many songs are much edgier.
The sounds of the 70s dying out into the 80s. Despite all the mediocre British music from this period I've been subjected to on this list thus far this one stood out just enough to get a 3.
Rock New wave
New wave. Ni fu ni fa.
Started off strong but very quickly dipped into repetitive and forgettable. It's good New Wave, don't get me wrong, with strong atmospheric synths, a fun dance vibe, recognizable raunchy vocals, mechanical production, and even some cool horns. And I was impressed by the first three songs. "Dumb Waiters" and "I Wanna Sleep With You" are eery intense gothic songs, while "Pretty in Pink" is a generational pop song. But after that, it was standard New Wave formulae. It's a shame because I had high hopes, not just from the first 3 songs, but because "Love My Way" is one of my favorite New Wave songs. "All of This and Nothing" slowed things down and it works out pretty well, reminding me of The The, but I think they could have taken it further, especially for its length. "She is Mine" was a soothing fitting closer.
I may enjoy but I don’t think that I can ever be fan
I've heard a few songs by The Psychedelic Furs over the years so I was excited to listen to this album. It was good but did not quite live up to my expectations. I still really enjoyed listening though and would definitely listen to a few of these songs in the future. 3/5
This is and it isn't. It has songs, swagger and fun but it's also flat, samey and ultimately uninspiring. I think I'd have liked it a whole lot more back in 1981.
3/5 Good sound, but a lot of the same throughout the LP.
Successfully makes it half a step higher from "This is OK" to "This is good," Still 3 stars.
Fine enough with a quirky sound. Might be a grower.
Nothing of note really
Pretty good, but not as clean or catchy as I thought it was gonna be. Some nice songs still.
This was definitely a predecessor to grunge. Which surprised me since my only knowledge was pretty in pink. Some of the songs are a little samey, but pretty good
I can get down to The Psychedelic Furs
Yes, essential. Yes. Look, there's nothing to scoff at here, and I found the whole thing pretty catchy. I'm not sure how monumental it is, since there are roughly 300 other albums on this list that sound exactly like this (and today is #995 for me, so I can say that with authority.
Pretty in pink е оттам
This was a relatively quick and average album by the furs. I liked their other one since it had their more mainstream hits. This one was alright some of the songs were light and comical. For this list it was a decent album but in general I wouldn’t say this is that great or revisit it much. 5.9/10
Definitely post-punk. "Pretty In Pink", "Into You Like a Train", "Dumb Waiters": they are all good, if a bit alike.
Dit klinkt me goed in de oren.
Not bad. Not brilliant either, but still: not bad.
I knew of them and liked some of their songs in the 80s, but never really listened to any of their albums all the way through. This one is edgier than I've usually thought of them. Even this version of "Pretty In Pink," which is the original version, is grittier than the one I know from the 1986 film (I also probably assumed at the time that The Psychedelic Furs recorded a song just for the movie -- I know now that they recorded a new version of and that it's the original song that inspired the movie). Definitely has that London-punk-pop-rock sound of the early 80s.
Ietwat poppier new wave. Ik vond het middelmatig
Great sounds. Near a 4, but just not quite enough to get over a 3
Didn’t really get much out of this, didn’t grab my attention at all
This album shares its trajectory with the career of Michael Ricketts. a spurt at the beginning and then just slowly gets shitter as time goes by.
Very, very Michael Ricketts.
Blah blah blah
Pretty fun, but not really better than any of the other new wave or post punk greats. Probably not even The Psychedelic Furs' best album. Still good though, solid 3.5
Pretty in Pink is good. Bass and drums are excellent. Vocal always irritated me, but the sound for 1981 is good post punk and pre stadium rock. Not brilliant, but they did have a huge cult following.
Massa o som até, meio punk rock
3/5
Opens well with “Dumb Waiters” and I was genuinely quite excited that this could go on to be a snorter of an album… The next few tracks are pretty cool, jangly guitars with a Smiths feel to it and some vocals that could be Bowie going punk so that was ticking the boxes for sure! Tails off a bit in the middle with a couple of throwaway basic filler tracks then picks up with “So Run Down” Really good album with just a wee dip but defo one for the future too!
Tähän bändiin on pakko tutustuu paremmin. 3/3
Sounded mostly okay. Music a bit too messy in places. Not a fan of the vocals.
Ok, it wasn't bad 80s, just a little cheese that made it listenable enough.
A fun early 80s album
Album 128 of 1001 The Psychedelic Furs - Talk Talk Talk Rating : 3 / 5 Favorite Track : Pretty in Pink So 1980s. Thought I was listening to a John Hughes soundtrack, at times. A bit poppier than I expected. Nothing bad to say about it. Good album for those who enjoy the genre.
I don’t really care. 5/10
ok. more new wave than i was expecting
"She comes in like an angel/And goes down like these flats/.../I won't give you flowers/I just wanna sleep with you" Poetry. Best track: I Wanna Sleep With You
Didn’t like most tracks but more because they were kinda ehh. But there were some okay ones in the form of mr jones and all of this and nothing.
Musically quite enjoyable, but I don't dig the singer all that much. Probabaly won't dive into this band again unless I hear something very interesting from them. 6 out of 10
Maybe in 1981 this music was considered to be psychedelic by some, but listening to it now it’s rather generic rock. The last two tracks were the best in my opinion, while the remainder of the album was below average. This UK band was moderately successful back in those days, but I haven’t heard about them in a long while.
need to re listen. i liked it.
This album is such a long and monotonous one. There are a few songs that sound slightly different, but, overall, it is a record that sounds all the time more or less the same. There is just bland music that has not much interest to it. It just sounds very 80's, in a very dated way, and in a bad sense too. Well, it has been, at least, listenable even though not much enjoyable, to be honest.
If you made AI listen to all of these albums and come up with it's own... it would probably sound something like this. 4/10
Massive blind spot for me - early 80s post punk. Crusty aesthetic smashing into 80s pop. The vocals are an acquired taste, but I like the authenticity. I prefer the tracks where they let off the shackles and are not afraid to go off the tracks. A key example of this is the first track [Dumb Waiters] which is messy and all the best kinds of wild. Other stand out tracks are [Into you like a train] [It Goes On] where the rhythm section really gets it together, some distortion creeps in and the tempo shifts add a nice texture. Between these tracks there is some serviceable radio friendly tracks like [Pretty in Pink] and [All of This and Nothing] that are easy to listen to but don't wow me. I wouldn't turn them off if they came on the radio however. The rest of the tracks are just kind of there for me and have drawbacks like poor lyrics [I Wanna Sleep With You] or just forgettable [She is Mine]. **
gillade pretty in pink resten meh
Wanted to like it but just didn’t really do it for me
Meh … almost bleh
Groupe inconnu. =>2/5
I'm beginning to suspect that this list was made by brits who have a soft spot for 80s new wave and post punk... lol. This was fine, didn't really move the needle for me in any specific way. A bit brash. 2.5/5
Some low lows and not high enough highs to balance it out for me.
Apart from Pretty in Pink pretty forgettable . Not quite a 3 .
Not for me
489/1089 - Why do British people have to turn every vowel into a diphthong??
Favourite track(s): Mr. Jones; So Run Down Another British rock album from the 80s. I wish I had as much of a soft spot for this music as the curators of this list seem to have had. This one is at least bearable, albeit very uniform. Some of the tracks are so similar to one another, they become hard to distinguish even upon second listening. The instrumentals are defined by clean drumming with a little bit of variances and guitar riffs which are not striking enough to remember. Once or twice the instrumentals are supplemented by saxophone, e-piano, or the like, but do not stand out beyond that. Then there is the rough speak-singing on top of that, ever the same with this kind of rock. I honestly wonder who would call this one in particular their favourite album.
okay
Ok,
Mjög einfaldur tvistur, því ég sé ekkert aðlaðandi við þessa rödd, döll döll döll. Lögin eru ekki leiðinleg, en heldur ekki nógu eftirminnileg til að lyfta þessu upp yfir sönginn.
What is this list’s obsession with blannnnndddddddddd pop punk new wave it’s SO BORINNGGGG. I really see 0 value for this to be anywhere near the list, just leave it on the 2 dollar bargain CD bin haha
Seriously, such a boring post-punk new wave album. How many of these rubbish picks can end up on this list, because I swear I have heard of this album many times before. His voice is definitely the worst part, so soulless, monotone and blah. The book mentions how it "bridged the gap between underground art-rock scene and critical acclaim", but honestly, it should have stayed in the underground.
Hmmm.
That looks... interesting. Well its actually not interesting at all. The singer suck ass. His sinhing is so monotone and unernegetic, he fits the band sound like a piece of bacon on ice cream. Its just bland new wave/punk bullshit that the author of this book loves for some reason. I dont think there is anything this band does that is revolutionary or that is reinventing anything. Its just not very good. All the songs sounds the same, the lyrics are incoherent and stupid (im into you like a train), the hooks are forgetable at best and for some season they thought adding a 5 second cheesy saxophone solo in all of the songs would make them better (spoiler, it doesnt). Im tired of writting review that no one will ever read so ill stop rambling. Its bad.
After the album finished, Spotify played better later-era Psychedelic Furs songs. I say, skip this one and start later in the discography.
Some very 80s music. Kinda fun but nothing here for me again.
Nothing really stood out on here. Always thought Pretty in Pink was a bit cheesy. The rest on here just sound like inferior versions of the same thing
Time locked. Boring singer, boring lyrics. Pointless to have on the list.
Hard to listen to
Eh, not my cup of tea
Generic New Wave album. It passed the time but I've heard a lot of similar albums.
Pretty generic and forgettable new wave record. Doesn't hurt, but also doesn't have a lot to distinguish itself from the pack.
Good start
Don't love the rough vocals, instrumentals didn't feel particularly compelling
Not bad overall, but still feels dated in places (that sax really?). The early 80s production drives me crazy at times. I'd call it 2 stars but I'd be willing to invest a little more time in this band based on what I've heard so far.
Not my favorite, had to skip through so of the songs…
This band could easily be swapped with any of their contemporaries from the new wave/ post punk era of the 80s and I’d never know the difference. They all sound the same to me and not in a good way.
This is as early 80s as an album gets. Despite having different lyrics, notes and rhythms, every song basically ends up sounding the same by about the 2 minute mark … and that’s not a good thing.
Surprisingly strong start with Dumb Waiters. Leaning more post punk than new wave it definately caught my attention. Regrettably that was the highlight. Furs seem content to settle into pop flavored new wave and staying there for the rest of the album. It got a bit repetitive and boring, but not terrible.
Not a great album by any means. Single sucked and I never gave ot a real chance. Relisted to it now and its not as bad as I remember. Too many similar songs and like a mono tone all along the album. Not my thing
Pretty In Pink
Mr Jones sounds like the Wipeout TV show theme, and the rest sounds about the same. It Goes On has a nice drum break, and that's about all that caught my ears.
Very basic but not an unbearable listening experience
I'd heard "Pretty In Pink", never paid any attention to this band. It's labelled post-punk, but riffs, song structures and vocal tone sound a little bit punk pop (reckless, rude as though it's a virtue), a little bit pub rock (chugging along), generally pretty conventional. The lack of instrumental flourish made me wonder whether a lot of entertainment or merit might supposedly be coming from the vocals, but melody, lyrics and singing aren't that interesting or appealing ... Generally it's not totally bad but not at all special, I don't get why it belongs in 1001 anything (apart from 1001 whiny Brit 'hits'). A couple of songs are okay but overall for me it's Pretty Poor, 3/10.
First couple of tracks are the winners - then things get a bit samey I was never a fan of the voice or the writing, so this band was always a pass for me
Manages to be both psychedelic and furry, zoned out way too easily
This album was a bore bore bore.
This album has no reason to be 53 minutes long, just for nothing to happen. It was all very samey, which i appreciate in the smiths but this does not have as much personality. I often found myself bored, which is strange since there was just so much going on here, too much?
I found so terrible boring, monotonous and overall felt very background of a pub vibes
This was an interesting one. Brit pop has a big mark against it, but I really liked some of the songs. A wider range than most similar albums I haven't liked, but still a little samey. I didn't care too much for the vocalist, but it didn't take too much away from it. Perfectly average.
Meh
Meh
just kinda boring the majority of the time? the only track that felt good was mr. jones - the sax and guitar duo was kinda sicc on that one tbh and the end goes hard
568/1001
Is like Patricio rey y los redonditos de ricota but way less cocaine, im pretty sure they tune the same
not bad not terrible, but i really wouldn't pick it again. It's a fun listen I guess, but nothing stands out really and I'm uncertain on whether to give this one a 3. I guess it's closer to a 2.5. It's ok.
Oh my god I hate this British punk style of singing so much that I don't even know if the music was any good. Please, no more punk or post punk I am so done with the genre
not memorable
Ihan ok, aikansa kuuloista. Jossain kitarat helisevät smithsin tapaan.
In my opinion this is one Talk too many
(more like 2.5 but)
The vocals always grated for me when hearing TPF when their stuff was new, and that hasn’t changed over the years. And the lyrics do have some thought behind them, to be fair, but I don’t find them particularly interesting or profound. Musically it’s of-its-time postpunk but with a few frills eg a bit of sax here and there. The best-sounding songs are actually the ones where they flash a bit of psychedelia, as per the band name, but even then I found myself wishing it was Echo and the Bunnymen who did the same thing but so much better.
I never was into them. For some reason "Pretty In Pink" was a massive hit, it's OK but doesn't do anything for me.
It’s just like an 80’s album that’s off tune the whole time
one hit=one decent song - back in the hole of brit 80s -90s pop trash
Rethinking my scoring. 2 stars means it’s ok but I don’t feel compelled to listen to it ever again. Bit muddy overall. First few tracks are ok but it tails off for me after that
When I was in elementary school my older sister was very into The Nylons. She formed an a cappella band called The A Cappella Fruit with some friends of hers. I think she was Nectarine. Until this very moment I thought A Cappella was one word Acappella. Anyway, "Acappella Fruit" and "Psychedelic Furs" are quite similar as band names go. The first word is an adjective with four syllables. The second word is a single syllable noun starting with an F. It is debatable whether I ever had anything interesting to say in these reviews. It is clear now that I am absolutely bereft of interesting thoughts on these albums. I am pretty much thoroughly ambivalent to this album.
Honestly, I listened to this album but don’t remember enough about it to know what to say in this review. I feel like that says it all.
So unremarkable I’m having trouble writing a review. It’s like if you made a bland pudding cup into an album.
England in the 80s must have sucked
They get a 2 only because the instruments rock. But I cannot enjoy the monotone lead vocals. It's catchy on a couple unique tracks, but gets tiresome fast.
kinda boring, but not offensive?
ChatGPT bitte generier mir e post-punk band us de 80er
Für mich nichts besonderes. Typischer Brit-Rock aus den 80ern. Keine Highlights, recht ähnlich klingende Lieder. 2/5
Meh don’t really like the voice
Its okay
Not novel, not standout, not worth the time of admission.
Nah. Do not want. Just can't get into New Wave. But I gave it a go.
Some of these lyrics are pure brainrot. The music is pretty solid and coherent, though.
Despite what I think is a decent opening salvo - the schronky Dumb Waiters and the original mix of Pretty In Pink - Talk Talk Talk settles down into very pedestrian rock’n’roll: all the edges rough and a hole in the middle. Just the year before Steve Lillywhite had produced the expansive 3rd Peter Gabriel album and the clean Black Sea by XTC, so the murky production here must be a deliberate choice. It does justify Butler's coarse unpleasant voice and that unpleasant voice does make some banal music a little more interesting, but I could do without Butler’s awkward sexual overtures. My mother went to the see the Psychedelic Furs in the early 80s. She told her older sister, who misheard the band as the Psychedelic Fairies. I tried to tell this to my friend, LD, a Furs fan, but he misheard the misheading as the Psychedelic Furries. He found it very funny, so I didn’t bother to correct the misunderstanding. 2 I was initially baffled by this album. While there is frequently a pleasant sheen of Berlin Bowie about the whole thing the musical detail is so banal that I felt compelled to listen a few more times to be sure it wasn’t some sort of conceptual feature. The singing in particular was at first full of seemingly bold decisions, albeit David Bowie’s bold decisions from a few years before, and yet its volitional element seemed to decay to my ears the more I listened. By fourth spin I was nearly certain that Richard Butler was, just, a bad singer. First mystery this album was, then farce. Late in the first listen I caught myself thinking ‘haven’t I heard this one already?’ and checked the track listing lest I had fallen foul, again, of the Special Edition Deluxe Reissue. I hadn’t. It’s just that a ludicrous percentage of the top line throughout Talk Talk Talk, particularly in the verses, is ‘Mary Had a Little Lamb’ on the offbeat. I toyed for a while with the notion that this was a conscious decision with some sort of artistic logic before acknowledging to myself that I had given far more time to these morons than I ought to. One of the worst albums on its subgenre I have heard. 1/5
Ekstremt forglemmelig og middelmådig.
I never took to the Psychedelic Furs, back in the day. Turns out, I still don't.
Pretty run of the mill New Wave. Forgot it soon after listening
Nothing too crazy, but it’s the kind of album you have to listen to on repeat for one to really appreciate it. I like new wave as a genre, but this album didn’t really do much for me.
I didn't much like them back in 1980s and I don't like them now
The whole album just sounds the same, and the sounds quite close to a few bands I like, so all it does is want me to listen to them.
Heard some songs from them before. Sadly this album didn't make a good first impression. I've heard Pretty In Pink from it before and it was the only song here that really stood out, the rest sounded very samey. I'm disappointed 2/5
Utterly naff
It was all right, but the next morning I don't remember it.
I had never heard of this band before. Perhaps they aren't discussed so much simply because they aren't very good. I was unimpressed by the songwriting, the vocals, and I honestly thought the production sounded muddy and unbalanced throughout most of the album. That being said, it wasn't entirely detestable, and a couple of tracks were done fairly well.
Nothing spectacular to me.
sometimes interesting instrumentals but often one note
Bit too weird.
I generally like the Psychedelic Furs but I found this one to be pretty boring
Nothing special, pretty bland.
This was ok, I love Pretty in Pink.
It's fine, not essential though
More of a 2.5. The musicianship was there, but the simple lyrics and dreary singing meant that I wasn't ever really engaged. The instrumentation reminded me at times of "Blackout" - one of my favourite David Bowie tracks - so, there's that at least.
Vocals too dreary and flat for my taste.
Jfc what’s up with this 80/ls run. These albums aren’t getting a fair shake anymore but that’s the way the cookie crumbles
Not bad
Fuzzy. Or furry. Too hairy for me.
This post-punk/new wave album charges ahead on serrated guitars, punchy rhythm work, and dense sax flourishes, while the vocals deliver their angst with theatrical drawl and sneering cool. Yet for me it plays like being stuck at a loud after-party hosted in an echoing hallway—initially thrilling with attitude, but quickly grating as the clamor swallows nuance.
meh
Not a fan of the British punk voice. Especially the annunciation on I Wanna Sleep With You. Sounds like the singer from IDLES
I like this band. I really do! I've seen 'em live and everything! But *Talk Talk Talk* is one of their weaker records. It's a transitional album between their dense, swirling debut (terrific) and the crisp, poppier sound of their third record *Forever Now* (also great), making a tentative step away from the former towards the latter. However, the noisier, more chaotic numbers that make up the bulk of this record sound like retreads of songs on the debut; even the vocal melodies sound recycled. *Talk Talk Talk* also contains a few pop-oriented tracks in "Pretty In Pink", "She Is Mine" and "All Of This And Nothing", which are the highlights of this record. One can only wish they would have gone in this direction for the whole album (but you have to wait for *Forever Now* or better yet *Mirror Moves* for that).
Balsas nuobodokas, tekstas irgi. Nemanau, kad klausyčiausi antrą kartą.
I liked this until he started singing. Something about the 80s style of singing irritates me and everyone from the era emulated it.
Not sure I'd revisit
This guy's singing straight up blows. There's some decent energy going on with the rest of the band, nothing spectacular, but he keeps ruining the music with his off-key singing. It's mad. Get rid of Richard Butler and give the sax guy more airtime -- that would fix all my problems with this record.
That will be interesting. A2 or 3? Mr Jones? A 2
Not into this record despite some cool moments. Some creepy and off putting lyrics, but mostly just not super interesting to me, especially vocally. I know they've influenced a lot of the stuff I love, but this didn't do it for me. Some aesthetic production decisions I'm not into as well, for instance a lot of it feels pretty mono/up the middle to me. Like big important guitar parts feel lacking because of how they're treated in the recordings. Is this like the post-punky version of Alice Cooper? It feels like it's missing some edge. Fave song: Pretty In Pink - great hook but I don't really like the way the verses feel. Somethings just off about it all to me.
*Dumb Waiters: new wave-y but strangely shoegaze-y. the vocals are kinda killing it for me but the overall sound is so interesting *Pretty in Pink: has the structure of a pop song but the texture is so distorted and moody. it's a cool contrast, reminds me a bit of Sorry in that way although they obviously sound quite different *I Wanna Sleep With You: that riff goes stupid, really like the tone. the dissonance between everything makes it more compelling No Tears: it's alright. this track would blend in seamlessly on Marquee Moon Mr. Jones: like it but don't love it Into You Like a Train: it's like a mix between Talking Heads and Cocteau Twins, really fascinating sonically even though the hook doesn't hook me It Goes On: instrumental is dope, especially the break in the middle where it builds to that big moment, but the vocal melody is sooo dull and repetitive *So Run Down: guitar tones are out of control on this whole record. this one's a vibe, into it All of This and Nothing: I want to like this so bad but I just keep getting stuck on the vocals. the frontman sounds like an 83 year old guy that couldn't even sing at 20 She Is Mine: filler for a closer is crazy god, I wish these old rock bands weren't allergic to having vocalists that can sing. starts out strong and proceeds to be less and less remarkable as it goes. absolutely adore the sound of it, so many interesting textures and tones throughout, but the vocals don't bring much to the table and there aren't enough hooks or melodies to make it still stick in spite of that __ SCORE: 5/10 ADDED TO PLAYLIST: Dumb Waiters, Pretty in Pink, I Wanna Sleep With You, So Run Down
I was underwhelmed.
Completely forgettable 80's pop. 2/5
Its not great. The mastering is dull and vocals always seem to take to the background. Makes words hard to understand while the lackluster guitar and drums take the center stage. The songs themselves aren't that interesting or fun either.
Noisy, yet poppy. And I can hear how influental it was. Not bad, and yet I got quickly tired of listening to it. Not much variety musically, though the saxophone was quite nice. I'm not a fan of the vocals, though.
mega Margaret dorm room vibes and mega repetitive. Yes, we get it. You’re British, you’re angry and she’s pretty in pink. Isn’t she?
(·•᷄ࡇ•᷅ )
Really not my thing, from the mix to the singer’s voice
It’s ok. Nothing too bad or too good to point out.
pretty meh overall. not even a huge fan of pretty in pink, but definitely wasn't interested in this one
2 star I got bored of u
I’d love to actually see the full list of 1001 albums at somepoint as they just have left some brilliant ones out so they could include some dubious ones. Sure, Pretty in Pink is a classic song, and there is possibly one other good song on this album but it’s hardly a classic in its own genre let alone of all time albums.
It’s a fun album at first, but a lot of the songs have the same cadence and tone to his speak sing vocals, which got old by the end (which sounds almost exactly like “Pretty in Pink”).
Best Song: Pretty in Pink. It has that kind of medicated, sleepy, background quality that makes it okay. Worst Song: I Wanna Sleep With You. Would it be an early 80s British song if it didn't include a song that sounded like it was specifically written to be used in a subway murder? Overall: Great, another 80s British Bowie impersonation. But hey, at least this one has a saxophone! And honestly, the saxophone does make the whole thing a little bit more palatable.
probably never going to think about this one again
It's like new wave but I'm not having any fun.
I was excited to listen to this, but I was very disappointed. Every chorus for every song on this album, I expected them to break into "pretty in pink"...it all sounded the same.
Really not a standout album. Pretty standard other than that wailing saxophone. 2/5
Liked the album but misses 1 or 2 real "bangers" maybe for my taste
Not memorable & redundant.
Flat, boring, cringe lyrics, WTF saxophone. Standout track: Pretty In Pink
Was this terrible? No, but it did end up being quite boring. Another album that would benefit from half-star ratings.. 2.5/5 rounding down
Came out, strong with pretty in pink and fell off a cliff
5,2
Pretty in Pink is good. The rest is replaceable 80s.
I feel like I’ve already listened to this even though I know I haven’t. Just kinda generic. I think I knew Dumb Waiters and Pretty in Pink ahead of time. Not really my jam. Favorite song was Mr Jones.
2-3
4/10 - a bit meh, pleasant in the background but nothing to write home about
Nothing really memorable about this one.
Other than the first two tracks, really forgettable
I've seen several people mention in the 1001 albums project how they feel it's overloaded with generic UK rock and britpop. With several records I disagree, but here I agree completely. There's nothing that really stands out from this record, I felt it could've been done by countless other bands, and probably has been, to be honest. If I had to pick one song, I'd pick "Pretty In Pink", being the biggest hit. But honestly, I forgot about this record pretty fast after listening to it.
