I saw some other reviews that really talk about how this album runs all together. I do not disagree with that statement one bit. That said, I did find myself generally enjoying the music on this album quite a bit more than I thought I would. "Pretty in Pink", is definitely the highlight of the album, but other songs on the album definitely stand on their own, even if they do all more or less sound like "Pretty in Pink". I definitely hear the post-punk entering new-wave era at play here. There's also a bit of gritty glam to this, as well. Overall, not an amazing album, but one that I enjoyed well enough.

Grupo que tuvo cierta repercusión en los primeros 80´s si bien no alcanzaron el nivel de otras grandes bandas (The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Siouxsie and The Banshees y un largo etc.) Este es su disco más conocido, y aunque haya resistido bien el paso de los años no tiene el nivel de los mejores álbumes siquiera de 1981. Con una voz, la de Richard Butler que recuerda a la de Kevin Weatherill de los Inmaculate (Fools, grupo similar en nivel y reconocimientos) se mueven con soltura entre el post punk más melódico, toques new wave, sintetizadores o el pop sin disimulo. Además el saxo de Duncan Kilburn le dota de un carácter propio (sin ocultar la influencia de Bowie). El comienzo más punk con Dumb waiters desemboca en el pop perfecto de Prettty in Pink, su gran éxito no solo del disco sino de su carrera. El resto sigue la estela. I knew the song Pretty In Pink but hadn't realised it was The Psychedelic Furs - I don't even recall the name. The album is much of the same, I really liked it, post-punk goodness

first three tracks come with a bang, but it all goes downhill from there. Favorite track: Dumb Waiters other picks: pretty in pink, I wanna sleep with you

Started off with high expectations that wound down to meh!

This album is very much punk having an exotential crisis in the face of New Wave. And David Bowie.

Good transition album between punk and what would become the new wave scene in the UK. The vocal angst is still there, but the melodies mellower. Not amazing, not terrible.

I've listened to the radio hits before, but never this full album. The guy's voice was a little off for me, but I didn't hate this.

Into You Like a Train and Pretty in Pink both work real good for me. I do love the vibe of all of this and carries all the way through. Not an all timer for me but a strong piece of work.

More rackety and rock-oriented than I had imagined. After a while the singing (which, in its delivery, held the odd Mark E Smith affectation) wore on me. Nonetheless, the sound was dense, I liked the slightly dissonant horns, and proceedings marched to a satisfactory conclusion. Alright!

Fairly enjoyable but not memorable

Enjoyed this and will go back to it, especially Dumb Waiters and Pretty in Pink. A real sense of the 80s.

This album has some very good songs, however I feel that some of them were wasted thanks to the bad guitar work on some of them. The singer's voice is very similar to Iggy Pop's (it's probably him, right? I haven't looked at the wiki) and the lyrics are good. Although it is overall a good album, it didn't impress me much. I'll leave 3 stars!

Sehr generisch gefällt mir nicht so richtig hab nach 3 Liedern aufgehört

Eh I have mixed feelings about this. I couldn't really tell most of the songs apart but overall the album was okay. I think it was just kind of mediocre to be honest. Even trying to write this review is difficult because I forgot what the songs sounded like. If the plain white wall which I stare at from 9-5 in my corporate job was an album, I think it would be this one.

Things moved quickly in the early eighties, and in the space of three albums the Furs went from abrasive new-wave squonkers filtering the Berlin Bowie of Warszawa and Neukoln through punk, to sleek MTV pop-rockers produced by Todd Rundgren. This is the mid-point - with tracks like Into you Like a Train harking back, Pretty In Pink looking forwards. It's not my favourite Furs album, but it's a very solid four stars.

Vocals and lyrics are a bit Judgy Bowie.

Great album as a whole!

Generally a big fan of the band but that said, I think the earlier records are a bit more genuine in that they were slowly influenced by the other things going on in music once they were cutting records and being played on the radio... this is probably the most consistent album, though, in terms of quality of effort on each track.

I like this. The melodies and moods are up my alley, although I don't have an urge to listen to it again. I wonder if it's an album that could have drawn me in more had I found it earlier in my musical socialisation.

I love Pretty in Pink, and I was familiar with it well in advance. The rest of it, though... I just didn't enjoy much. Only knew the song Pretty in Pink before. I don't have any strong feelings about this either way. It's an interesting mix of post punk and jangle pop, and sounds slightly ahead of the curve in that aspect. I like the splashes of saxophone as well. Sounds more like a mid 80s record than an early 80s one. Like the first two songs, Mr. Jones and the last one more than the rest. The singer's voice is slightly annoying but the album isn't long enough for it to really grate.

One of those albums where it's all one song but I kinda like the song so 🤷 Pretty In Pink is just the much more highly produced version of the song that appears 8-10 other times on the album.

I'm really glad that Andie and Duckie are friends throughout the whole movie and it doesn't force a romance narrative, but I also think Blane sucked, so I don't like the movie's ending but I also disagree with most other people about what it should have been.

Of course I've heard of The Psychedelic Furs but couldn't have named one of their songs. Started listening and was like "ohhh, they're the Pretty in Pink band." A solid example of 80s alt rock (college rock? IDK what to label this).

Delicious new wave, wonderful. A lot of people say British singers sound like they lose their accent when singing, which I see in some cases, but it makes me appreciate bands that continue to sound violently British when singing. New wave is great for this. Pretty in Pink is an obvious standout, the rest is just alright to vibe with.

David Bowie but good.

I was actually a little underwhelmed with this. It was fine, I like new wave, but some of the songs felt a little dull. Maybe a remaster would help? I'm not savvy enough to know.

Eughhh I honestly didn’t love the immediate aggression of british pop and then that’s all I could think of from then on. The music seemed good enough but the vocals seemed overwhelming.

Richard Butler's vocals are limited at best and become a factor on some songs (e.g. "I Wanna Sleep With You") but this is *mostly* an easy album to listen to - I haven't heard many of these songs, probably being more familiar with the Furs' mid 80s softer sounds. e.g. "Mr. Jones" is much more a driving post-punk rocker than I'd remembered this band could deliver. Some definite missteps here - i.e. I'm really not buying the sax in these songs (e.g. "No Tears") and after a while there is a same-ness to the sound. Doesn't quite reach the pantheon of 80s post-punk/mopey Brit bands and I think it's mostly due to the vocals which quickly grow tiring, but I'd dig listening to some of this again. 6/10 3 stars

I couldn't remember Pretty in Pink at all, although I also listened to Talk Talk Talk in the 80s. Overall, the album didn't particularly impress me, but it didn't bother me either. 3/5

A solid post punk album with a great style and a lot of hooks as well as some more tender moments like She Is Mine, even if a bit samey in places

I think the out of tune opening track really sets the tone for the whole album - it's kind of good and also annoying

I was expecting some limp 80s middle of the road pop rock. I was very happy when it turned out to be a lot more discordant and wonky than I'd expected. Like pop but filtered through a fun and wonky mind.

Вот так и тут: конечно круто наткнуться на охуенный альбом, особенно незнакомый, но для этого нужно пробраться через череду древнего кантри и блюза разного качества; устаревшие электронные потуги, которые никто не знает и не помнит; загадочных британских звезд хит-парадов конца девяностых-начал двухтысячных, которые вот нисколько не двигали музыку даже тогда, а лишь повторяли за Массив Атак, Портисхэд и условными Радиохэд. По альбому... Вот вроде бы всё то, что мы любим, но по итогу чувствуется как очень средний альбом. Немного грустно. Лучшая песня - All of This and Nothing.

Really like this. Between a 3 and a 4 for me. I had a whole long write up and the website yoinked my review. I'll just say I would have absolutely worn this out in my teen years, but hearing for the first time as a much older me, it hits different. On the weaker side between 3 and 4, so I'll give at a 3, but I'm likely to return to it at some point. Definitely wouldn't switch the station if it showed up.

So a big of The Psychedelic Furs, and was really looking forward to diving into this album… Always thought they were more of a mid-80’s band, but was really surprised to find their debut album came out in 1980 – so kudos for being one of the bands that defined the sound of the 80’s… Of note – I got the Furs album 2 days after having to listen to a band called “The Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators” – who apparently was the first artist to add the term “psychedelic’ to music – so there’s that, and not much else with that band… By the way, their album “The 13th Floor Elevators” is dreadful as hell, and totally sucks ass - if you haven’t gotten to that one yet… Anyways – liked the rock-based foundation of The Furs take on alternative 80’s pop, and have always been a fan of Richard Butler’s unique vocal style… Also enjoyed the guitar work on the album, as well as how they strategically worked the sax into their songs – as it really added a unique twist… Seems like they are one of those bands that always had 3-4 excellent songs on each album – which really helped to sustain momentum in the music industry over time, and “Talk, Talk, Talk” is no exception… Those 3-4 for me on this album would be – “Pretty In Pink” – 5-stars out of 7… Staple on the soundtrack to the 80’s… “Mr. Jones” – 4-stars out of 7… Nice straight-forward rock track… “Dumb Waiters” – 5-stars out of 7… Really unique sound to this one… “All Of This & Nothing” – 4-stars out of 7… Nice closer to the album, with great instrumental sections… There really isn’t a bad track on “Talk, Talk, Talk”, though there do seem to be bits and pieces of the more popular tracks, embedded into some of the lesser tracks (i.e. “No Tears” & “She Is Mine” sound a bit like “Pretty In Pink” at times…). Got to see the band at an 80’s festival a few years back, and they were awesome live – and you would be shocked at just how deep their catalog is when you listen to them… Highly recommend… This album definitely represents a band on the rise, and a clear step forward in the evolution as compared to their debut album… Not fully developed by any means, but you can see exactly where they are going… Would probably give this a 3.25 if I could, but definitely can’t get this to a 4, so a really good 3 in my book…

Ugh. Damn my completionist morals, I really wanted to turn this off. The singer has a truly awful 1/10 voice. He at times sounds like he's a trolling drunk at karaoke seeing how many people he can get to close out and go to a different bar. And it's just a monotonous CD overall too - few exciting moments, long stretches stuck in the same moment, nothing interesting sonically and not much variety. I have a pretty high tolerance for offensive, but I'll also point out that a handful of songs, like "I Wanna Sleep With You" and "Into You Like a Train", are more offensive lyrically than I think anyone who might potentially like this kind of music would enjoy, and not really in the service of any kind of redeeming message.

Dumb Waiters is a strange one, but the off-kilterness seems too overt not to be deliberate. Wish the bass was punched up in the mix as it is pretty buried and makes this feel really flat. Maybe New Wave isn't for me, but I'm pretty meh on that whole experience. Like it is objectively fine music, but nothing that moved the needle for me. Hard to imagine getting pumped up to see this live.

This was fine. Pretty fuzzy, pretty pop. Had this on in the background, so maybe there was more to it, but it felt like generic British punkish album to me.

Some cool flowy songs that has a pretty unique sound. Singer is pretty typical 80s British sounding but it goes well with the songs. Was nothing crazy special but was a cool album to listen to. This is going to be one of those albums that I look back at in a year and have no recollection of it at all.

Dumb Waiters is weirdly great. Harmonica fucks on it (I think it's a harmonica?) Psychedelic Furs not pulling any punches saying they want to sleep with you. Some songs have some terrible 80s'ness to them (Pretty in Pink), but a lot have some fun bass parts to them and interesting instrumentation. Low 3.

That’s that New Wave sauce, right there! Everything goes down well with a bit of The Furs. I noticed for the first time that at least 50% of this album was about having sex. That’s worth a bonus star.

Thoughts before listening: I know that this band is a big deal to a lot of people, but I know very little about them. British new wave I guess. I feel like they never really had a hit in the US. Review: So this is more of a post-punk type of sound instead of the new wave I was expecting. I rather enjoy this although I recognize its not everyone's cup of team. They employ a driving, dense sound that is fairly reminiscent of their peers like the Cure. I like the saxophones that get mixed in on these songs as well. 4-stars

The most irritating of all the new wave voices, a genre of which I already don’t appreciate. I couldn’t stand this album and considered turning it off half way through, but I regrettably persevered. I Wanna Sleep With You was the worst of the lot, akin to nails on the chalkboard.

Husky voiced, plenty of sax. Kind of reminds me of a proto-U2. Has that "cool" factor but nothing really sticks out aside from the vibes. Favorite track: "Dumb Waiters"

Pretty in pink is the big hit while the others kind of just become background noise. The lead singer has one tone/sound that is so consistent throughout that it makes the album sound repetitive. 5/10

I’ve become kind of allergic to the phrase “New Wave” as this project has gone on, given the number of English synth bands from the 80’s I’ve endured. I’d heard of this band, but never listened. All of this made for a very pleasant surprise. This album is super interesting and has all kinds of weird, rough edges and an artsy sensibility. It reminded me of Roxy Music a little.

Perhaps I need more Psychedelics to really appreciate Furs. This was a brutal slog for me. I had heard “Pretty in Pink” many times and tolerated it, maybe even enjoyed it. But this. Ugh. The literalness of the laughter during “She is Mine” when he says “You just have to laugh at it all” was too much for me. Mercifully it was the last song.

Some good stuff here. Also seems like a bunch of filler. Interesting that this sounds like a link between early 80s postpunk and the Arctic Monkeys. Unfortunately that isn't a good kind of interesting.

Another day, another kinda sick new wave/post punk record on here. This one’s not all killer, but the good stuff is real good.

Just kinda washed over me. A bit samey, but enjoyable enough.

There's something about this album that just doesn't gel with me, but I can't figure out what it is. I left it and came back a couple of hours later and had the same feeling. I slept on it and listened the next day fresh, yet the feeling persists.

This is another one of those albums that I seem to be getting at the moment that is one great song and the rest of the album is 'meh'. Disappointing.

A couple of cool sax solos, but couldn't get into it. It's not bad, but I'm not interested in giving a 3rd listen. 2/5.

This guy really loves David Bowie doesn't he? In fact he really loves one particular bit of phrasing of David Bowie that he just does over and over. A nice wee tribute but grating.

The album has a great sound but boy is it repetitive after a while. I mean, you can tell this is influential music but they have a sound and don’t deviate from it.

Like many 80's albums, it's somebody's jam. Pretty in Pink is the defining track. The rest blend into sameness for me.

HL: "Dumb Waiters", “It Goes On”, “Pretty in Pink”, "All of This and Nothing" Some decent new wave today; I'm not crazy about Richard Butler's vocal performance in this, however. He doesn't sound that different than in "Love My Way", the only PF song I was familiar with. Maybe it's the lusher production in the latter that distracts me. But his too-cool-for-school snarl in songs like "I Wanna Sleep With You" is just annoying. That song contains two of the things that redeem this album as a whole, funnily enough: the overdriven guitar and distorted saxophone parts (see also: "Dumb Waiters"). June 7, 2024

I like the music and songwriting but the vocals are a bit grating.

Never really heard it much--but I'm enjoying it. Anything attached to John Hughes had me running. Where did that sax on I Just Want To Sleep With You come from? They sound like they could have almost taken off (despite Hughes). I like the singer's quasi-louche affect. Pretty In Pink is their pop side leaking out. Probably made them a fortune but made them uncool despite their alternative strengths.

Great album. A mix of punk and rock that you don't need to be 15 years old to appreciate.

Gosh - we are in an 80s vein at the mo, aren’t we? Some of our group are gonna hate that but I love all that Big Sax sound and snarly voice. So 80s, so nostalgic, so fun - for me at least. Pretty in Pink always reminds me of my dad - he loved the song and the film although we both hated Molly Ringwald’s dress at the end. Awful but the song is fab and I was happily carried along on this wave. It’s more of a 3.5 but I’m feeling nostalgically generous.

Funny... here's a band that, on paper, shouldn't be in my list of faves, but I've always had affection for the Pysch Furs. I own (still!) a few of their albums on vinyl, this included. I don't know that I have a favorite, they all blend a bit in my memory, but as I listen to this, it may well be the one I'd pick if I had to. The opener is a classic (and this version beats the remake), and there are lots of other gems. Richard Butler is not a vocalist I'd list among the better singers of his era, but there's something that just fits the music so well, it couldn't be anyone else singing these tunes. And the band has a knack for creating noise that hangs on to musicality just enough to sneak under the wire. This speaks to a vey specific era, before the '80s became what they were, but definitely post '70s. Enjoyed this one a lot.

I've always enjoyed a few songs from these guys, but I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. I expected to give it a 3, especially after a few tunes that all sounded the same. But I don't know. It grew on me. It's a very dense album, musically. There's a ton going on and it's hard to pry the individual parts apart, and that worked more often than not. That dude's voice is one I've always enjoyed up to a point—he's pretty tuneless, a la Mark E Smith, and that can get old. But it never really bothered me. Also, I liked the saxophones. Very Roxy Music. Good stuff, even though I'm not sure I dig the lyrics to Pretty in Pink. Feels a bit misogynistic to me, but maybe I'm reading it wrong.

You really couldn't attend college in the 80s without hearing The Psychedelic Furs drifting from a window. But I never listened to a whole album. I like this. Dig that droning buzz and combination of punk/indie rock with a side of pop. The nostalgia is strong with Pretty in Pink. Not quite a 4 but more than a 3.

Mediocre music to play in that one store in the mall that sells "punk" paraphernalia, sandwiched conveniently between H&M and The Gap.

I can never figure out how I feel about music where the vocals are essentially spoken word with music in the background. I started off this album not liking the songs, but when we got to "Into You Like A Train" I changed my mind a little. I like the beat and I was bopping my head along to the music.

I’ve heard this before, but giving it three good listens in a row revealed a masterpiece to me. An incredible album.

I’m starting to like these 80s new wave, post-punk vibes. It’s very hard to divorce these sounds from the movies I saw as a kid. The unexpected sax is a good touch.

Blind album and artist. I feel like I've heard the band name though, just don't know where. Pretty middle ground album for me. Interesting and glad I tried it like a lot of other albums here, but did not click with it.

She is Mine is just awful. I didn't think I'd have that kid of reaction, but apparently it's that offputting. ugh. Pretty in Pink is a good tune, though.

I really really like Richard Butler's voice. I was pretty surprised by Dumb Waiters... it felt like an alt-rock sex pistols track and delivered well. Pretty in Pink is an otherwordly pop gem. Actually much of the rest is also pretty strong, with All of This and She is Mine being the last two and the next best to me. Enjoyed the trip.

I would like this a lot more if discount David Bowie wasn’t the one singing.

If all of the songs on Talk Talk Talk were Pretty In Pink this would be an easy five. But they aren't.

Their danceable, guitar driven songs have the energy of punk songs and the distinct sound of Richard Butler's deep voice. Talk Talk Talk is their second album, and includes what may be their most famous song, "Pretty in Pink."

Good album with a mix of post punk and pop, but just felt a bit samey throughout, not one I’ll come back to I suspect.

He is way too British, and altogether too horny, for this album to be good. Across a forty minute runtime, he may have sung four different notes and none of them well. I hate that this mediocrity plagues the 1001 albums list when there are so many albums and artists that deserve the recognition. Here, it's just another horny British artist that can't sing backed up with vaguely psychedelic instrumentation that ends up being way more post punk, not that the recategorization makes it any more intereresting.

For some reason, I get The Psychedelic Furs and Violent Femmes mixed up all the time. I think it’s something about their names. Talk Talk Talk occupies a space between New Wave and Post-Punk; it always seems to be oscillating between a somewhat respectable Pop sound, and a rawer heavy Rock one. It makes for compelling listening. And when it settles down to the Bowie-Esque She Is Mine at the end, it unravels into a beautifully melancholy portrayal of the absurdity of life and all it’s small characters, coincidences and events which throws the whole album into a greater perspective. This is the sound of Punk growing up, losing some of the Nihilism and embracing Absurdism, and I’m all for it

The missing link between punk and new romantics, like a slightly better generation X. Far from flawless, but enjoyable and interesting, with a couple of great songs.

This is an interesting one. There are points where the album feels like it's dragging on for an eternity, and there are points where I feel like I could live in the basslines for the rest of my life. This is my first time listening to a full Psychedelic Furs album...I think they might just be best reserved for playlists for me even though I really do love some of these moments. Is no one going to talk about how Pretty in Pink sounds so pretty because it's just the hook from Born to Run without the melody? I'm certain it was a case of parallel thinking but I can't unhear it. All in all, Talk Talk Talk is the definition of good, not great. Dumb Waitress, So Run Down, and She Is Mine are all good tracks. Pretty in Pink would also be a highlight if not for the Born to Run ear worm. But compared to their contemporaries I don't see what makes them special enough to warrant an inclusion on this list. We're talking about the same era of The Talking Heads, The Smiths, Joy Division, Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Cure, The Birthday Party, The Jam, The B-52's, and Television. Fur are a good genre band, but nothing special here. Post punk is a genre I love and I'd probably go see this band live if I had the opportunity, but as a selection on the 1001 Albums to Listen to before I Die, this one falls way short.

The only song I know the Psych Furs by was the Pretty In Pink track. It was fun to hear the whole album and put some context around it. I think I'll need to revisit this at least once, but for now lets call it a 3. Super 80s. Love the thick accents. Call me a US nob.

It was alright. All the songs kinda sound the same, like your stereotypical 80s new wave rock. It's not a bad sound, but I was pretty okay with the album being over when I was done with it.

I think I like their self titled album more than this one, but it's still very much my jam. I did a quick scan of the internet and it seems the Furs are not considered goth or goth adjacent, which seems pretty weird to me - they sound rather gothy. I guess if they wore more black nail vanish... It's not quite a 5 for me, but I'd go 4.5 if that were an option. Fave tracks - "Pretty in Pink" and "It Goes On"

Eh, I'unno. As New Wave, it's not as weird as Q: ARE WE NOT MEN? A: WE ARE DEVO!, and it's not polished as, say, RIO. It sits kind of in the middle, and as a result, it's fine, but not terribly interesting my ears. I 100% dug "She Is Mine", though, so you can have that at least.

This does not feel like it's from 1981. Its sound feels like its a decade ahead of the curb. Excellent stuff.

The definition of a 3, really. I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all, but it never really makes the jump past “good” – Pretty in Pink is pretty fun, as are 2 or 3 other tracks, but this album feels like it’s missing a specific type of signature song. That doesn’t even mean a super commercial hit or anything, it just needs something that really defines their style and stands out, and I just never found that here. It is 1981 rock, which occasionally dips backwards into the late 70s and occasionally dips forward into some mid-80s R.E.M. type of soundscapes, but it never really settles into a spot where I found myself super deeply engaged with any one song, hence the 3.

De stem van Richard Butler herken je uit duizenden, en in de bekendere songs van de band (waar mijn kennis ook ongeveer ophoudt) draagt hij met z'n gortdroge toon ook echt bij aan de sfeer. The Psychedelic Furs combineren het zoete van new wave met het bittere van goth/post-punk. Dit wordt het best geëtaleerd in 'Pretty In Pink', waar de zoetsappige sfeer in de chorus omslaat naar een donkere ondertoon. Steengoed nummer. Maar ook kwam ik er snel achter dat ik eigenlijk nooit een heel album heb geluisterd van ze, aangezien Richard's stem aardig in de weg ging zitten naarmate het album vorderderde. Weinig variatie, en telkens dezelfde trucjes waardoor veel songs klinken als demo versies van 'Pretty In Pink'. Gelukkig zijn er ook nog wat nummers die zich hierin onderscheiden, zoals de opener 'Dumb Waiters' en 'All of This and Nothing'. Unieke stem en een band die ik (m.u.v. Pretty in Pink) eigenlijk nog niet goed kende. Plaat is in de breedte van best hoog niveau, al lijkt alles wel best veel op elkaar. Into You Like a Train lijkt echt te ver op Pretty in Pink. Overigens is die laatste wel echt een kneiter van een postpunk hit. De zanger heeft de Britse stem van een punker, maar de muziek heeft veel meer te bieden dan het 4 akkoordenschema van de Ramones of vroege Clash. Pretty good

I am a big fan of post punk/new wave/modern rock. Having said that, aside from "Pretty in Pink" and "All of This and Nothing", the Steve Lillywhite produced Talk Talk Talk is a long dirge of samey sounding punk/post punk that has not yet quite made the turn toward the more interesting sound of modern rock. They also have not stopped mimicking the sound of The Sex Pistols and truly created their own sound yet. The album that the algorithm pointed to was the remastered album re-released in 2002 instead of the original. This is relevant, because not only is it remastered, it is also longer because it includes all kinds of bonus tracks, and for some weird reason that re-ordered all the tracks which I don't think suits this album at all. I recommend listening to the 10 track original that was released in 1981 and is available on most streaming services. Alas, there is not much memorable here. Talk Talk Talk didn't even make my top 50 for albums released in 1981, much less make my top 1001 for all time. Personally I feel their best album are to come over the rest of the 1980s, even though others criticize them for being over-produced. I don't buy this BS that somehow less production makes an album more sincere or authentic.

After listening to Talk Talk Talk, it was actually pretty good if a bit of a mixed bag in some cases. The songs for the most part all had really cool melodies and just a really groovy and energetic nature but some could get a little much at points. The singing also worked rather well too with the unapologetically British accent that the singer had and i like those in some songs. This album is a rather good listen and the good outweighs the bad here. Best Song: I Wanna Sleep With You Worst Song: Dumb Waiters

i ended up enjoying this WAY more than i thought i would… i was never bored and i enjoyed the sound to the point i think i may even revisit a couple of these songs later. 4 stars because the vocal style really did not work for me at all and i thought i would get used to it but never did. but eventually i was able to tune that out and just enjoy the guitars quite delightfully

All in the same, very distinctive style. 'Pretty in pink' is easily the best, but 'All of this and nothing' is also excellent.

It's a real good new wave record. First two tracks are excellent. Some of it as others have said is a bit bland with some cringe lyrics. I Just Want to Sleep With You lets the side down on both fronts. Broadly speaking this is a good record rather than a particular essential one, it's probably not stood the test of time as well as others in it's ouvre. No Tears was another standout, however much of the second half is a bit samey.

80s fun

At some point you have to wonder if perhaps something else could have taken the place of this 100th British post-punk album on the list. Don't get me wrong, I love it... but still.

The amount of post-punk and new wave (especially the British variant) on this list is obviously excessive and maybe even problematic… But this is one of the albums I sure wouldn’t remove. The songwriting is fun and catchy and Butler’s vocals are iconic - but what really makes this record stand out is Ashton and Morris’ jangly and playful guitars.

3.8 - A consistently solid British new wave record that features lots of growly, jagged guitars. Standouts: "Into You Like a Train", "Pretty in Pink", Mr. Jones."

The first track is dark and edgy and has a weird saxophone(??) riff, so I thought I could be in for a fun ride. This sound does return on a few more songs but never quite as well, and a lot of it felt more like stuff I’ve heard before from other bands. I grew a bit weary of the vocals, too. But all in all, pretty good. I think I’d have been a fan of these guys if I’d been around in the early 80s. 3.5

Perfect 80’s punk party album. It’s just a lot of fun!

I liked Pretty In Pink but no other songs really stood out. It all felt kind of the same.

I completely forgot about "All of This and Nothing" and will be playing it on repeat. God, I love this album. So underrated.

The more I listened to this the less I liked it. Kinda hate it now, actually. But it did start to give me Stone Roses vibes at some points, so there’s that…

Doing this project I have learned that for the most part I do not enjoy 80’s post-punk/new wave music. It’s just not my thing.

One of those albums I wish wasn't on this list. Incredibly same-y songs, very repetitive instrumental phrases backing up a monotonic and boring singer. I Wanna Sleep With You is a turn-off for me. I realize I'm listening to this album 40 years out of its context, and I read about the influence of the Psychedelic Furs during their 80s hey day, but in my mind an album on this list should hold up no matter what era you're listening to it in. I was bored by track #1.

Featuring an all-time classic single this is certainly an album chock full of wonderful licks. The punk and post punk influence flows heavy and each gets shine on this on the whole. A very good album that stand up to modern scrutiny.

It was okay, but a little patchy in places. Some songs sounded vaguely like Hawkwind from around the same era (maybe the sax?), which was enough for me to push this up from a dismal 2 to an average 3.

A bit drab. I also found the recording quality poor, the sound was dull. Apart from PiP, the album was forgettable

Great album, reminder to myself to relisten as I’m not super familiar with their catalogue. Loved it though, can’t wait to spin it again. Reminded me of some late 80’s Manchester style cuts.

Yep, they put out an album and I have unfortunately listened to it.

I initially thought this was Talk Talk by Talk Talk but no; it is Talk Talk Talk. Pretty in Pink is, of course, iconic, deservedly so. The rest of the album is, shall we say, consistent. I happen to like what it is doing pretty well. But I think reasonable people could disagree and find Talk Talk Talk pretty monotonous.

Pretty good album, with a few especially good tunes on it. They're at their best when they slow down the tempo a little.

It’s ok

This was my first time listening to the psychedelic furs. It won't be the last. This was really good. I liked the entire record.

I can see the appeal, I'm just not into New Wave.

Maybe you caught me on a bad day, but not a fan. Some of these tracks sound like a table saw, but without any of the charm. I've made better sounding demo tapes on a tascam 4 track recorder. No.

A painful listen

Just Okay - 3 stars

There were times while I was listening to this when I thought it was perhaps one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. Other times I felt it was just really fucking good. I usually don't fall in love on the first date, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't screw.

You say samey, I say brilliant at what they do and I like the saxophone. These are great pop songs (Pretty In Pink being one of the greatest of all time) backed by cacophony. Dumb Waiter and Into You Like A Train are pretty amazing too.

I really enjoyed the first half, a lot of great songs I’d never heard before but as Ben said, twists on more famous sounds, but it dropped off in the back end.

Very good. Energy up throughout. I could hear bits of loads of other bands like Roxy Music/The Fall/Sex Pistols/The Cure. They were either very influential or savvy when it comes to picking bits from others.

It was pretty good. It can sound repetitive at times but overall it’s a quality rock/new wave album with good instrumentals and vocals.

Très, très générique. Pop-rock début 80’s, donc son relativement daté par moment, globalement sympathique mais pas fou et assez dispensable. Je vivais bien sans connaître ce groupe. La première “Dumb waiter” fait 5 minutes dont 3 de trop et fait partir l'album d'un très mauvais pied, à peine rattraper par la plus sympathique “Pretty in pink”. “All of this and nothing”, “She Is Mine” sont pas mal mais rappellent qu'on a bien fait de fondre tous les saxo au début des années 90.

I enjoyed the live instruments and some tunes are catchy, but I really don't like these 80's saxophones.

Good new wave rock with a nice 80s sheen on it. They’ve got a cool sound. It’s hard rock with an ear for pop stylings. I like how horns enter the mix in an organic way.

Not a bad album but not one that I think I'll want to reach for. I'm not a fan of the singer's voice kind of right from the start. Luckily the band has a cool vibe and kept me interested. The mix sounds weird to me but oddly enough I like it. The horns are cool and there's like super low volume reed instruments interwoven with many many guitar parts. They all combine together and make for something cool sounding. It's cacophonous at times (like listen to "I Just Want to Sleep With You", man it's a cool sound but it is muddy!), but I think I like it because it's different. Lots of songs have a nice driving sound to it on the record which I liked!

I’m not a big fan of this kind of music and with these guys, singing in particular doesn’t appeal to me nor the subjects of the songs. The music itself isn’t bad. Listens: 2 Fave Track: All Of This And Nothing

Not really my kind of music, but perfectly fine

Knew the name but never listened before. Rather good as it happens- and sounds a lot more modern than I’d expect from 1981. Grunge like in places and of you told me this was 10-20 years later I wouldn’t have been surprised. Vocally bits reminded me of the magnificent Half Man Half Biscuit, which is never a bad thing in my book. And I can get onboard with the overall sound. Pretty good overall and I’d listen again without a problem.

It started well, but for some reason that I didn't identify, it finishes just like any generic rock album that will stay in my memory for some hours and then go away forever.

British new wave/post punk today. A fairly average album. Some really catchy numbers on this record. The first song on the album, Dumb Waiters, is awful, but the rest of the album is pretty solid. Favourite songs: Pretty in Pink, All of This and Nothing, Mr. Jones, It Goes On Least favourite songs: Dumb Waiters (dogs down the street were reacting to the fucking saxophone parts...) 4/5
