Suffocating plush, Layers of soft pretty sounds Cradles so so voice
This album was merely okay. I think it started off pretty good with fire suite but fell off through the middle and end.
Solid album with feels from many different rock bands
ganska schysst vibe, men inget överdrivet intressant

Ooh, something not from 50 years ago. Fun! Ooh, instrumental? Is it instrumental? Wasn't instrumental but had its moments.
Alright
Svårbedömt även detta! Öppnar otroligt starkt, från öppningsspåret fram till Rise är TOPPEN, utdragna, drömska gitarrer ger lite War On Drugsiga känslor. Mest wow-faktor i Sea Song. Men sen tappar albumet farten.
First time I'd ever heard this and I found it to be a good listen.
Catch The Sun is one of my favourite songs of that era, but I think album is a little weak overall.
An good album I guess around 2000 I will be listen around a lot, now I don't think I will back to it
3.5 Ambiance Liked: Cedar Room and Catch the sun
I was disappointed in this one! Last month I had their album The Last Broadcast generated and really loved it. I'd not heard of Doves before then This album was just a bit bland and boring though? There were a handful of songs I enjoyed, and this wasn't bad at all. I just felt like it was lacking something especially compared to their other stuff 3 ⭐️
Thoughts before listening: 2000s era British indie rock I believe. I feel like I have enjoyed everything I have heard from these guys so I am glad to have a reason to listen to a full album. Review: This is catchy, anthemic alt rock. Sort of a mix of Oasis and the Bends-era Radiohead. The Doves definitely sound more mature than a lot of the British rock I have heard on this list. These are fully flushed out songs with lush instrumentation and lots of emotion in the performances that I am enjoying. "Catch the Sun" is a song that I recognize and one that I have added to playlists for years. Really good song. Still though, whenever I see these 90s and 00s British bands it makes me wonder how this list would be different if it was made by American writers....would bands like Sponge, Marcy Playground, or the Crash Test Dummies have made the list instead of these endless British groups? I guess we'll never know, but ultimately this is perfectly fine, but not exceptional, 00s era alt rock. 3-stars
I was let down after the first track. it set a good mood and made for some really nice background listening. It might sound weird but having vocals going forward put me off in the sense that it made listening to it feel more active/involved. The vocal performance wasn't even particularly bad or anything it just made the experience feel more boring Highlight: Firesuite
Android needs to invest in implementing an emoji of someone guzzling cum, cause that best describes this album, it's good, but I wasn't the first, nor was it influential or innovative. But it is British. 7/10 Fav tracks - here it comes, break me gently, Sea Song, Melody Calls
I understand that some of the intention of this book and its authors is to bring attention to lesser-known artists like Nick Drake or whatever bullshit they found in the 'world music' (shitty ass term) section of their local record shop in whatever fancy gentrified part of London these parasites (music journalists) live in. This album charted well in the UK, Ireland and Australia and at the time of writing the book was not forgotten. Nor was it particularly innovative or groundbreaking apart from sycophants at NME and other musicians saying 'yea man this is what walking home at 4am sounds like aye' Well we have a whole genre of that music now and it's called putting 'slowed+reverb' into youtube and enabling autoplay. I like this album a lot but it sure as shit doesn't deserve to edge out much more deserving artists and albums from being on here. This project is fun but the source material suffers massively from having a Western-Centric, specifically Engl*sh-Centric perspective. There are only a handful of non english language music albums here on this album and they aren't anything memorable. Would it have been so difficult to liaise with the overseas offices of Rolling Stone (of which the main author of this book is a founding editor) to get one or two albums from other countries? There are more Morrissey solo albums on here than Smiths albums and instead we could have had something like Kino whose music was not only basically the anthem of youth dissatisfaction with late 80s USSR, but is fondly remembered still today as one of the best musical acts to ever come out of Russia/The Soviet Union and was massively important to the native rock scene in Russia. That's not even to mention all of the odd genres that this album could have touched on from across the rest of the world. Tuareg blues, YuMex, Schlager, J-Pop, etc. There are so many unique and interesting musical movements that No, you can have fuckin' Shack and The La's. Maybe I'm missing the point of this book, but I think it should be renamed '1001 albums that a bunch of pommy hacks recommend to bring you up to speed to the tastes of a very specific group of music journalists so that on the 0.0001% chance you get invited to some bullshit industry party in a renovated warehouse in Shoreditch you can nod along when someone says how much of groundbreaking album Kid A is while you resist the urge to break a glass over this cunt's head' In terms of the actual album, this would have been good to be assigned as a weekend album, but instead I got Joshua Tree by U2. Luckily the weather here has been overcast and grim, so I am able to slip into the mood for listening to this album. It was pretty good. Highlights: Firesuite, Sea Song, Rise
For the first six songs, I thought I was listening to songs that didn’t make it onto the last Oasis album. Then “Melody Calls” and “Catch the Sun” gone one and I look at my phone to see if the album ended and a new band queued up. They seemed to jump back and forth between downbeat and upbeat songs after that. In the end, they sounded like a poor man's Oasis to me. Decent album, all said.
I occasionally listen to The Last Broadcast and think that I should listen to Doves more, but this album is why I don't. It's mostly pretty landfilly, non-descript indie rock. The Cedar Room is the only song on the album that I'd go out of my way to listen to again, but the rest fall into the Elbow/Coldplay generic genre. Inoffensive but not worth listening to again.
This was interesting. I kinda liked it actually. Nothing groundbreaking but pleasant enough.
Amazing effects and stiff and I wished they developed it more. Almost sent me to space but it didn't :/
Your boys at www.1001albumsgenerator.com sure do love their Doves. I wonder if they'll update the list to add the new album when it comes out? Doves are a pretty consistent band, and I do enjoy them (had this and The Last Broadcast on CD back in the day), but I feel like they would have been fine to include just one album from their catalog on here and then looked to other artists that were effectively snubbed. This can actually be said about a lot of albums on here, and while I agree an artist can have multiple albums in their catalog that are a must, not EVERY artist deserves multiple shoutouts on here. All that said 3/5
There were some very cool atmospheric vibes from this album after a time started to meld together so that one track became difficult to discern from another. Still, a good candidate for musical wallpaper you might want to play in the background as you chill out at the end of the day...
There doesn’t seem to be much of interest happening here. I’ve seen a few bands go from indie to dance / guitars to synths but I don’t think I can name any other examples of people going the other way. - That’s maybe the most interesting thing about this entry. It’s fine though, inoffensive.
It’s fine.
Not bad. Not very exciting.
Not my style but decent background
Actually, it was okay. Not something I’d go out and listen to again, but if it came up on a playlist, I wouldn’t skip any of the songs. Everyone could play their instruments, and the singer didn’t sound like he had a mouth full of novocaine. It was more like an unpolished rock album than hipster indie.
I do like these Doves albums. But this is the second Doves. No TMBG, really?
A gloomy, crepuscular album that seems to share as much DNA with trip-hop as it does with rock. Not my kind of thing at all - and an hour of mostly downtempo navel gazing can press after a while - but well executed.
Sab boi music but a lil hopeful Fav songs the man who told everything, the cedar room
Nice pleasant.
This was a nice slice of indie.
I prefer this one to The Last Broadcast. It's not something I'd actively seek out, but fine enough to listen along to.
Competent music, but fades into the background
Sellout Stadiums era U2 for British readers of Pitchfork. Like, take the saccharine sincerity of "Beautiful Day" and make it a bit more lo-fi, a bit more home-recorded, a bit more analogue, and you basically have Lost Souls. Much like that era of U2, I'm not necessarily averse to this, but that's because there's nothing here that I could possibly find offensive. And that's kinda why it feels a little offensive. Lost Souls is an inherently passive listen. A wallflower record – casual and pretty, but a wallflower nevertheless. There are worse albums on this list that I prefer to this, either because they have stronger singles or at least try something interesting. There's also better albums that I hate more because I find them much more egregious and grating. I have no clue why Lost Souls is on this list, but it also never does anything to make me angry, while also never going out of its way to make enjoy it. The closest it ever gets to energized is "Catch the Sun," which is still pretty goddamn passive. A true neutral listen for me.
Another head scratcher for this list. By no means would I say that this album is bad. I had never heard of the Doves, this album, or seen anything to suggest that this album was influential in some way. Why?
It was pretty good. Will have to listen to it a bit more if I’m to form a solid opinion.
First listen and pretty good
Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.
I lost my soul listening to this uninspired music.
Opzich wel nice, iig erg relaxed
Very mellow. Good for doing your taxes to.
The Oasis of Indy? Lol. No. But this was alright. A little forgettable but there was some solid high anxiety chill in here.
Meh. I wouldn't disagree that this is kinda an impressive debut, and it's cool that the band sort of pulled off a reverse "Kid A" (before Kid A even came out,) but like, the sound of this thing is very indebted to Radiohead, but with overall less impressive songs and is less engaging throughout than almost all RH albums. The production is still good tho. Maybe I should revisit idk 🤷
Another one in the category of I should like them more than I do. No reason why I don’t love them. Just sort of never got into them.
A very chill album that was nice to listen to on a chill Friday.
This wasn't my favorite album in the project so far, but I did find some gems in there that I enjoyed in the moment. I think their strength lies in the Explosions In The Sky-esque instrumental movements rather than the lyrics. But there were some good grooves and hooks in there that I liked. Probably won't revisit them going forward, but a solid listen nonetheless. Notable Tracks: - Rise - Melody Calls - Catch The Sun - A House 5/10
como coldplay, pero mejor
2.5
Could have been better with trimming off about 15 minutes, but quite enjoyable, and "The Cedar Room" is a great song. 3.5 stars
3 stars. Good but forgettable
A most of the time mid-quality Oasis/Coldplay combo. There a few fairly strong tunes like Break Me Gently, Catch The Sun and The Cedar Room which have richer arrangements and more melody and feeling but everything else is a bit ordinary and blah and fading to grey where the band are less like Doves and more like Pigeons. Somewhere between 3.0 and 3.5.
Another blandish-post Britpop band on this list. This is ok, but not doing too much for me.
Eerily atmospheric
# Album Name: Lost Souls # Artist: Doves # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Very slow and sombre start to the album. Pretty much what you expect from the doves. Sea song was enjoyable. But it wasnt until the album got to "catch the sun" that it got going. By then it was too late. The singles from this album is solid. Good tunes. Sadly came a bit too late but it brought the album back from the dead. P.S. dont do what i did - i started listening to "lost sides" rather than "lost souls". I was thinking what the fuck is this album doing on here. Turns out its their b-sides.... # Top Tunes: Sea song / catch the sun / man who told everything / cedar room # Would I listen to it again? Only the singles i think.
3.5 rounded down why is this an hour long highlights: here it comes, rise, the cedar room (oct 3 2024)
i dunno i tried to listen to this like 3 times and couple days later i cant remember a thing about it. just pleasant little nothingness NNN
First impression: The album starts strong. I really liked Firesuite, Her It Comes, Sea Song. Almost Muse-like at times. A fine album overall.
Oh sweet Jesus. This looks like the earliest of 2000s and the heaviest sap. I’m worried about this one if I was to judge an album by its cover and press photos. A full hour as well. Yikes. Well I like the first song so this has potential, although the brief shimmer of vocals concerned me. It’s fine and we’ve returned to spacey, understated yet thick with atmosphere musicianship. Hell yeah brother. And here come the vocals. They should’ve stayed away. The first vocalist is repugnant, the second is good. Riverboat piano is always a downgrade to any instrumental section. You know this isn’t half bad as things go. Apparently I misheard this as a tv drama theme song. The samples are so good. I don’t love the main riff, but the trippy vocals and background instrumentation creates a lush atmosphere. This thing is interesting and this song was cool. The chords and sounds are so odd and fantastic on this thing. Even the singing works as it forms part of the atmosphere. What initially sounds like a bad Oasis cover forms what is a hypnotic and dense environment that is appealing and does not lose that appeal. I wouldn’t say these are the best songs I’ve heard or anything, but there’s something cool here. Another similar vibe. I can see this getting slightly repetitive, although the musical variety creates enough diversion from the similar ideas in song structure. Extended solo, back into jangly, reverb guitar. Lost souls is a different type of song. Far more vocal focused to begin. Then it’s buried in a swell of sound. Only to return to the sort of basic section. Into trippy circus music. So many 60’s psych influences here. Not my favourite track, but still gripping. This album is so layered. Wearing the 60e influences in their sleeves here but with a modern instrumentation and production. Foo fighters interlude. Don’t do this to me. Christmas Foo Fighters to boot. What is happening?? “Hey guys, we have an album full of dense instrumentation and introspective alt-rock, but have you heard about this song called Learn to fly??? Let’s do a bar rock cover of that.” I hope someone was fired for this blunder. Pass. NOOOOOOOO. What have you done. Doves. I was with you. I was on board. Why turn the focus from some of the most interesting pop/rock music I’ve heard so far to 2002 wedding music. Fucking Daughtry vocal line. A couple whirring, spaghetti western oddities near the end, but man that vocal line but the overly “epic” musicianship and the dreadful singing make this another trawl through the depths of garbage. Creepy train conductor intro is a VERY welcome change from WWE Soundtracks (as rad as they may be) but as the cool instrumentation returns so do the prominent vocals. Better vocal melody however. This one is ok. Throwaway instrumental interlude for the most part. Overstaying its welcome a little bit. 40 minutes is the best album duration. Sue me. One more. Man who told these guys the vocals were the way to go. They’re ok, but the instruments, the soundscapes are just too good. This could’ve been an instrumental album. A tale of two albums. An album divided. The instrumentation and production of the first half of this was so fantastic that all vocals became an instrument of their own. As the vocals became more prominent further along the track list, they became a distraction and in a few cases completely overshadowed instrumentation. An interesting experiencea and an excellent album let down by periods of mediocrity that became more frequent as the album continued. 3 HIGHLIGHTS: Firesuite, Sea Song, Rise
This wasn’t anything special, except one or two songs kind of made me stop what I was doing and listen.
This was interesting. Not horrible. I am indifferent.
2000s nostalgia
Best Song: Catch The Sun. Very classically late 90s/early 00s melancholy. Worst Song: Melody Calls. Far too much harmonica for me. Overall: A very consistent alt-rock drone. Feels at times like a more muted Porcupine Tree. The whole album has this sort of melodic homogeneity that allows it to kind in the background of your mind, never being good, bad, or interesting enough to demand your full attention.
Didn't finish it...it didn't capture me from the beginning like the previous albums did. I'll have to revisit it at another time and give it a thorough listen.
A very listenable album of melodic, melancholic indie music.
A nice surprise for me. How come I haven't heard of Doves before? "Here It Comes" reminds me of "Glory Box" by Portishead. Some tracks are really good. The main problem with the album is that it gets boring sometimes. 3 stars for "Lost Souls".
Ah British Indie Rock. This had a unique sort of psych rock feel to it but nothing felt out of the ordinary. I liked the first song as it was mostly instrumental.
I preferred The Last Broadcast but this pretty good, too. They kind of remind me of Oasis Lite. I'd consider listening to this again, although none of the songs really blew me away, and a couple were annoying. A high 3.
looks like shit tbh but ill try it. firesuite- 5 but if the whole album sounds like this.... its not gonna be good here it comes- ayo. 4 break me gently- 3 sea song- 4 rise-5 lost souls- 4 melody calls- 6 catch the sun- 3 stop it thats enough favorite track- melody calls
A fine entry into the dream/psych pop realm that still resonates today.
Their second album, the Last Broadcast, is also on this list and I thought that was pretty good! As for Lost Souls, I feel as though this is a very ambitious first album. It's extremely spacey and large in the first half, only to come down to earth and explore a more indie rock sound in the second half. I get the impression that Doves was heavily inspired by the grandiose nature of OK Computer (released a mere 3 years earlier), but Lost Souls ultimately lacks the unique stylings that cemented Radiohead as being one of the greatest bands of all time. This will just have to settle for being pretty good.
Going but not as good or interesting as their other album on the list 3
Really nice
Fairly unremarkable, standard stuff from 2000ish.
I loved \"Firesuite.\" \"Break Me Gently\" got grating quickly. I think I like everything the instruments are doing and the vocals kinda get in the way. I didn't like that slow strumming in Rise, but the start of Sea Song was great. I think I like about half of this music.
Good music-making, but whatever audio effects they were doing to the vocals were simply distracting and garbled the lyrics, which is unfortunate, because the few times they just led their frontman sing were the few songs I really got into.
Definitely an album that you need to be in the correct mood for, one to relisten to in autumn.
Pretty straightforward indie rock from the late 90s to early 2000s era. It has some good instrumentals, such as the guitar work. However, I don't find the album particularly memorable or overly interesting.
Mid +
Sadly a fine album, not great not bad. With one song rise-ing above them all. That's not enough to lift the whole album up, but a pleasant surprise!
I've always liked Doves, particularly 'Catch the Sun', which is a bit of an earworm for me (in the best way possible). But honestly, I can't really see why 'Lost Souls' deserves a place on this list. It's a fun, catchy album, sure. Praised by critics upon release (but when was the last time you heard them mentioned anywhere?). There's some fun trivia about the album too. Following a fire in their ffirst studio, they started over and recorded in New Order's studio. And they were the backing band for Badly Drawn Boy, who I quite like. I don't know if that's enough to warrant a place on this list, but I'm happy enough to hear it again.
First listen Saved 7/12
There’s moments on this record that I absolutely love. Specifically when it becomes a sweeping orchestral score. The singing doesn’t do much for me. Overall it’s fine but not one of the greats. 3/5
3/5
3.1 listened 2x
This sounds best driving through a northern town in the rain
Nice listen. 3/5
It was fine. Surprised there were two Doves albums so far
Liked some of the songs but on the whole they were very same-y. Didn't hate it.
3.5
Well, this was moody and a bit long but I enjoyed a lot of it
moody indie rock - a bit forgettable
I like this because it is music that I like. But this is another album that could have been replaced with something outside of the anglo-saxon world
Meh. I liked some parts of this, but other parts fell off.
It starts surprising but ends as the most Brit Pop Albums…6/10
Dreamy
The Doves never quite did it for me. I like There Goes the Fear but it’s not on this album. It’s not quite morose or ferocious enough on the one hand and not chill out music either. It’s fine and gappy enough to have it on in the background but nothing earth-shattering.
Album 466 of 1001 Doves - Lost Souls Rating : 3.5 / 5 Good album. Kind of a Radiohead sound. Wouldn't mind another listen.
Pretty average
Lost Souls is the debut studio album by British indie rock band Doves, originally released in 2000. Another new-to-me band. My first thought is that these guys sound a lot like Coldplay, who would release their debut album around the same time. Doves incorporates a lot more indie influence into their sound, and I also hear just the faintest touch of shoegaze. I guess it's unfortunate for Doves that Coldplay blew up because they cannot beat the "sounds like Coldplay" allegations. They create a late-night type atmosphere with most of the songs but a lot of them are just lacking. This record has huge potential, but they just need some extra umph... I can't really describe it.
Another Doves album that surprises and stands out. This one was better than the last broadcast. This had a much more relaxed, dreamy sad sound that makes a great indie sound. Even felt like this had some Radiohead similarity in some songs. Overall this was a really nice alternative album and would listen again. 7.4/10
Nice if unmemorable album. Reminds me of Joan Armatrading or Barbara Streisand. 6/10
I am a little surprised that this kind of generic indie rock band I never heard of has not 1 but 2 albums on this list. I am not a huge Arctic Monkeys fan, but you could just as easily have replaced one of these 2 with AM or something like Interpol. That being said I do enjoy this one more that the other one (at least I think I do, I barely remember it). This album has fun moments, but the middle of this album is a real drag.
Too many memories linked to this album to give it another whirl. Musically accomplished and well crafted dream pop. Ultimately Lost Souls and the Doves in general are so disarmingly dull it is almost offensive. Frustratingly they were better than most of the teal sounding artists, who half listened to a Jeff Buckley song that seemed to be spreading like a venereal rash back in 2000.
как-то тоскливо и напомнило элбоу. надо будет ещё потестить + может тот другой альбом с которого я уже две песни знаю
Well I liked it more than I remember when it first came out. It’s got a nice maudlin vibe and consistent sound to it, but none of the tunes really hammer home and some feel like they drag a bit. Pleasant enough but not remarkable.
The Doves! I’ve tried many times to like and get into their music. Main reason being is that they are Manchester contemporaries of Elbow which is a band I really do like and Elbow themselves hold The Doves in high esteem. I also think that both bands have collaborated at one time or another. Whilst Elbow music is very melodic and most of their songs very memorable and lyrically masterpieces, Doves music is the very opposite. The vocals are a bit too ‘Manc’ for my liking. Not a lover at all of that Manc(hester) drawl. Oasis got away with it as Oasis could only do. A meaningless football comparison springs to mind when I think of The Doves and their music. The Doves to me are the red part of Manchster whilst Oasis are very much Manchester blue. As a Leeds United fan I cannot stand the red Manc’s. A senseless observation I know and based on nothing but my own bias not music but I just wanted to get my loathing out there. I’m sure The Doves are very nice chaps and might even despise the reds as much as me. As for the music it’s OK, and because Elbow like ‘em and just in case one the band hate scum you can have 3 stars. 3/5 26/6/24
Pretty damn dull, file next to elbow but not quite as shit
Pleasantly surprised. We were uncertain at first but got into the groove.
I enjoyed this but it isn't groundbreaking. It's chill
They sure have a way of making a song feel like it's way longer than it actually is.
Catch the Sun is extremely catchy. But that's about the only song I found to be catchy.
A cool sonic landscape of alt rock. Firesuite gets it going on a good note, but nothing really elevates it beyond that or stands out for me. Fine.
Not sure what it was about Doves that ol’ Rob thought made you have to hear them before you die, but I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit! Strong 3
White boys.... standard fare
This wasn’t bad, but it was hard to hear a lot of the lyrics and I’m not really a fan of that. Some level adjusting would’ve been nice. I dug some of the sounds, but it was pretty forgettable overall.
3.5 Better than some other similar albums I’ve heard recently. Weird mix. First half is more ambient experimental stuff and then the latter half is more traditional indie rock.
Sad indie
It wasn’t bad.
Sounds like the inspiration for Coldplay
half decent, found it hard to get into
kinda felt like it would never end. otherwise passable to good!
The first half of this was bloody great. My interest wavered towards the end. 10 minutes shorter would have been 4 stars.
Consistently built up atmosphere with a slight tendency to become boring.
The album does not survive the first impression given by the magnificent intro, mixing shoegaze & trip-hop bits. It's not bad either, but I was hooked by these first 3 minutes and was let down too fast. I read that many compare them to Coldplay and I globally disagree: the music is better built, there's no gimmicks as putting keyboards everywhere and sad voices. There are regularly interesting bits (hints of shoegaze, sometimes lots of reverb on the voice, bits of electronic music). But it feels like it could have been better, more inventive, more thrilling that it is. 3 minutes after listening to the album I was excited, 30 minutes later I was nostalgic for all this album could have been.
Reminds me of Coldplay. The music doesn't hurt, but it's not thrilling either.
Listened to it in the wrong context. This is horrible cooking music, but would have been great for going for a walk on a lightly rainy night
I’m calling this “One Tree Hill Core”. First half of the album or so is easy on the ears, with a slight influence of post rock. A little melodramatic at times, like this is so clearly made for 2000’s dramas. There is a weird point in the album, from “Catch The Sun” onward there’s a consistant need to sound like a British foo fighters ripoff? A hilarious shot of nostalgia for turn of the century tv series enjoyers.
Not bad! Don't think I've ever heard of Doves before, and will have to check out their other albums.
It's a lovely, moody, atmospheric album. I remember hating the Man Who Told Everything back then because somebody played it repeatedly at an open mic night for months, but it's actually pretty great!
Perfectly pleasant
Felt like I should enjoy this more? I dunno I didn’t dislike it, but It didn’t click like it probably should. 3/5
I liked it a lot; very pleasant to listen to, in fact ;-) However, it wasn't the most appropriate choice for listening to at work, it's quite melancholy
A few weeks ago, I reviewed Doves' The Last Broadcast, which I really enjoyed, so I had high hopes for Lost Souls. As much as I loved The Last Broadcast, I wasn't as wild about Lost Souls. There were a few songs on this album that I liked: Rise, Catch The Sun, and The Cedar Room were my favorites, but the songs that weren't my favorites tended to kind of blend into the background of my consciousness. I still liked the overall atmosphere of this album; I enjoyed the shoegaze sound, but most of this album was just something pleasant to listen to, and it really didn't pull me in the way The Last Broadcast did. I hate comparing this album to their other work, but this album just doesn't have the feel and punch that The Last Broadcast does. In my opinion, this album just lacked a uniqueness to the overall sound. One of the things that The Last Broadcast did so well was creating an atmosphere in a sense, and that's missing from this album. I don't think this is a bad album, but given the choice between this and The Last Broadcast, I'll always choose the latter.
I listened. They sounded vaguely familiar. Did not dislike.
АААААА БЛЯТЬ COLDPLAY И RADIOHEAD ПОЕБАЛИСЬ СУКААААААААААА 7/10
1001 albums - One a day - 2.75 years This was an experiment in discovery and broadening my horizons. It begins to feel like a prison sentence. I started this full of optimism, like "I'm going to find my new favourite band / album" "It'll change me for the better" Now I increasingly feel like my ears are being assaulted. Like on a flight with a screaming baby, or noisy neighbours - I have to listen to your noise, your agenda, your life is rubbing against me in a place I don't appreciate (the brain). Like being on vacation, but you're tired and feel like you just need to stay in the hotel and not go out into the strange city again where every statue/mosque/giraffe starts to look the same. "I know I have come a long way to experience new cuisine and culture, but I just want to sit by the pool and drink Stella and eat a burger today." Anyway, it's a pretty good album it's not challenging in any way, which makes the above rant even more preposterous and entitled. Enjoy it but keep that beach towel on your lounger just in case.
A couple standout songs (Catch the Sun, Sea Song, Rise) but otherwise just a pretty OK record.
I didn't like this one anywhere near as much as The Last Broadcast. Nothing wrong with it, but no desire to revisit anytime soon, either.
Pretty standard indie rock. Probably could have died without hearing this.
I like a good prog rock album, but this one came off as bloated, derivative, and self important. I don't think there was much variety in the tracklist, and the songs presented were simply ok. Not bad, but not impressed. 3/5.
exactly what i expected. confirmed why i'm not a fan tbh
not very surprising in any way but decent
Venturing into "Lost Souls" by Doves was an intriguing experience, especially since I hadn't come across this band before. It's somewhat surprising considering my familiarity with the music scene of their era, notably around the time when bands like Coldplay began capturing widespread attention. It's easy to see some parallels between the two bands in their sound, yet Doves seems to have flown under the radar in comparison. The album itself was quite a decent listen. While it didn’t particularly wow me, it wasn’t disappointing either. It sits comfortably in that middle ground where you’re content with the music, but it doesn’t necessarily ignite a passionate response. However, there were a couple of standout tracks that I found myself genuinely enjoying. "Catch The Sun" has an engaging vibe that makes it quite replayable, and "The Man Who Told Everything" struck a deeper chord with me. There’s something about the latter that resonates more profoundly—this track alone makes me curious enough to delve a bit more into Doves' discography. Overall, "Lost Souls" comes across as a solid album with moments that hint at more beneath the surface. Favourite Tracks: Here It Comes, Catch The Sun, The Man Who Told Everything
Solid middle of the road album. Not great, not terrible, just is. 3/5
Fairly surprised to see a second album by Doves cropping up here. Surprised to see a first as it was. I’ve never heard of this band before, and I‘d consider myself pretty knowledgeable on this era and scene in music at large, so this is a weird pick to must-listen-too. Doves is perfectly competent. Their music doesn’t bother me as some other alt-rock bands in the space might. But it doesn’t stand out much either. It sounds as if Red Hot Chili Peppers and Radiohead had a baby. More than anything it reminds of John Frusciante’s desparate solo work. Coldplay comps and Foo Fighter comps crop up here and there. All this to say, it’s more interesting and less-offensive than a lot of what filled arenas in this world, but it is an artistic far-cry from the likes of more unique bands in this space like Granddaddy, Interpol, the Strokes, Radiohead, etc. Doves is a very MOR affair. But they were my friends and they sent me these tracks I’d tell them, “Hey you guys are talented,” and, “This is really good. Don’t stop weiting songs. I think you have a career in this. People are gonna like this.”
There were moments here where I thought this might earn 4 stars, but they never came together into something more than pleasant enough background music. A mixed bag - the poppier tracks stood out in a bad way. Favorite track: Sea Song
This is so up and down, really hard to judge, bang in the middle 3* it is then
Only got to listen to the first third of the album but I liked what I heard
It was alright. I liked the harmonica.
I liked it. 3.5 stars.
7/10 Highlights: The Man who Told everything Catch the Sun Sea Song Here it Comes Firesuite
New to me. It's adventurous for a record to come up where I can't guess the era or genre, or it subverts my guesses. With a name like "Doves" I imagined it was 60's folk, but instead it was like an orchestrated y2k post-rock/krautrock drum circle meditating on simmering emotion and meandering musical vibes. Akin to getting a mental massage.
This was way different from what I expected, in a good way. Interesting blend of indie rock and electronic elements. A little long but still enjoyable.
Good but nothing really stands out.
Seeing the release year and the cover, I was prepared for more forgettable early-2000s music, but some of the songs were actually really good!
Another 3.5 for me
Good stuff
Nothing wrong with it I guess, kind of reminds me of a less good Elbow. Catch the Sun was very listenable.
understated. can't say I'll regularly listen in the future however
Not bad.
Somehow avoided hearing them despite seeing them around for years, just never got around to it. Turns out they can write a pretty decent song, and create some nice atmosphere. It's just overall a little underwhelming, no songs really made my ears stand up and take notice.
longer and proggier than i expected. what a voice that guy has. solid
I had never heard of this band, so I set out to read up on them. The comparisons were Oasis, Blur, The Verve, Elbow, Coldplay, Radiohead! How exciting! This is going to be my new favorite band! Nope. It is indeed a British band that plays rock music. But not my new favorite one.
this is the second album by Doves ive had on here and neither of them have been anywhere near as good as kingdom of rust. that should be on here.
This is sleepy music
Its OK. Nothing great, nothing too bad. Like the instrumentals more than the songs with lyrics
3.5 It's alight.
For the most part, I just found this rather uninteresting...not particularly challenging, but just nothing enticing. However, by the end I was kind of getting impatient with it, so it lost some ground with me.
This did not excite me.
Decent
A beneficiary of NME’s lust for hype. The album is a perfect mean of oasis, blur and broadcast. It’s not as interesting as the latter, and lacking the charisma of Gallagher, Albarn or even Chris Martin. 2.8
This album is really good, with a great moody vibe. Overall a lovely listen, although some of the middle songs land flat. Fave Songs: Lost Souls, The Cedar Room, Sea Song, Break Me Gently, Reprise, Rise
Glad to listen to this. Sounded like something I would have liked when it came out. Hard to connect to it now.
Very frog coded album, no I will not elaborate
#132. Reminds me or Radiohead, but not as good. 3/5: whatever
3.1. Some melancholy jams. Front half of album > than back
I enjoyed this when originally released, British “indie” guitar music driven by instrumentals and groove. A bit mellow and vaguely “shoe-gazing”. A few songs are still good, well crafted and at times beautiful, but ultimately not that special.
At first I was really enjoying that, was thinking '4', then it went on a bit, so 3.5. never actually listened to Doves before, different to what I was expecting
I'll have to admit, this album had a nice atmosphere, although I didn't really feel inspired by it. The instrumental parts seemed very simplistic and, to be honest, boring. Similarly, vocal didn't really add anything to the equation. They went all-in on the feeling, and looks like it didn't work out in the end, at least in my case.
Modern Macunians. I hear pieces of Oasis meets The Chemical Brothers. Even a little Liverpool with some nice Beatles harmonica pop. Clearly of a time and place with Radiohead but never quite reaching the heights of any of those bands. I love the swirling electronic backgrounds and experimental layers. Some nice melodies and I really enjoy when the album gets eerie. Catch the Sun feels so out of place. 30 seconds in I thought this was put on the album by a producer from the record label that wanted something “accessible” for the radio. The Man Who Told Everything is more of the same. These two songs feel out of place before we come back to the Cedar Room and the feeling I like best in the album. Really catchy and vibesy. Great music for cleaning the house on a Sunday morning. I guess that’s the old man version of the late night afterparty for which this was intended. The final track "A House" really ended strong. While the mainstream singles in the middle of the record were a low point there was a lot to like. Overall though it’s an average album
This album had so much potential but just didn’t quite make it work as well as it could. The music itself is expansive, ambient, and takes influence from Shoegaze, space rock, and the Madchester scene. There’s a lot here to like, especially in a debut album, but some of the ideas just didn’t come together.
Good early 2000s album with a more modern feel. There are glimpses of 90s influences here and there but it still holds up. A few solid tracks but nothing stand out beyond rise and cedar room
Relaxing “mood music” mostly. I enjoyed the vibe overall.
Solid
Kändes som en typisk tvåa men så kom några låtar som räddade upp albumet till en trea.
Nothing exciting. It sounds like an early less rocky version of Nickelback.
This one could've been so much more in my opinion – the opening track bursts onto the scene with an amazing, prescient mix of shoegazy melodies that promises much, but when push comes to shove across the bulk of the LP there's too much early-'00s Britpop influence to make this its own statement. That being said, there are some great tracks on here when Doves stray away from the Coldplay/Oasis sound to one of their own, and I can't knock the technical prowess and forward-thinking instrumentals. Just feels like there's so much unrealized potential on this one!
Liked this! A bit long for the type of music for me though.
One likely to improve with repeated plays.
Not bad. Getting used to listening to new things other than the usual.
Au début, j'ai cru détester mais il y a certains morceaux sympas. 2,5
I don't know that band. I just have to listen to the songs.
Doves have a definite early 2000s Brit sound that hasn't aged well, similar to Coldplay. There are some tuneful moments here, notably "The Man Who Told Everything." But muddy production and drab vocals bring this down a notch.
Lovely indie
I think this is the second or third doves album? I like them well enough. I prefer when they aren’t singing, for what that’s worth. High three low four, but I’ve been too free with my fours lately.
-never heard of doves! -love getting multiple albums in a row from artists i do not know -love that its an album from 2000 -these songs are very interesting -like the vocal affects they choose and the instrumentals behind it are cool -sea song so far is very pretty -so far sea song is definitely my fav -okay these songs are getting a little boring -lost souls feels too long -im kind of over listening to this album tbh -catch the sun is the first real not boring song -and its not that good -these songs were really not giving in the way i was hoping they would -but some gave more than others and thats why its getting a 3
Sounded good, but it got a bit samey after a while. Think it would've been better if it was a half hour album.
Not bad but pretty average. Sounded like Foo Fighters a bit (2.5/5)
Super chill makes great background music with some emotional layers to it. Could imagine it in a soundtrack.
A great album, with interesting ideas in its instrumentals. The vocals are not quite for me, and the lacking dynamics of the record leaves the whole record feeling a bit flat at length.
Couldn’t make my mind about this one. It wasn’t terrible but not something I’d return to. A generous 3*
Not bad at all. Was quite good to have on in the background but nothing amazing for me. There were places where it sounded like Radiohead, just an observation.
This was fine to listen to, most of it didn't grab me but did enjoy Catch the Sun and The Cedar Room
3.7 - A blend of shoegaze, dream pop, guitar rock, tinged with melancholy. I like this as background music, somewhat echo-y and shimmery but never demanding enough to steal your focus. Standouts: “Sea Song”, “Catch the Sun”, “The Cedar Room.”
“Break Me Gently” is melodic, but also uses distorted vocals and some segments of dissonant and almost industrial background sounds. Industrial music by itself is a big turn off, but Doves show that sounds and concepts can be incorporated into other genres to great effect. Doves’ past as an electronic act called Sub Sub shows through in these parts, and that’s where “Lost Souls” is most interesting. “Melody Calls,” and more so “Catch The Sun,” kind of killed a great vibe they had going. At the start of “Melody Calls,” Jez Williams sings “Moving to a new sound; Waiting to forget the past” - Doves definitely moved to a new sound right there in that song. They shouldn’t have forgotten the past so quickly. The later tracks became a bit more radio-friendly and anthemic - more Coldplay than Radiohead - and to stand out in the early 2000s it took more than stadium-ready Britrock. I wrote the above paragraphs on my first listen. Then I never finished the review. When we got “Last Broadcast” 30 albums later, I revisited. The first six tracks of “Lost Souls” are great, but the back half of the album certainly suggested what was to come on their follow-up album. If not for that shift, I would think better of Doves, and this album. But judging the whole, comparisons to Radiohead are barely deserved, and those calling this the best British debut since Oasis’ “Definitely Maybe” expose the late-90s British music scene (though Portishead’s “Dummy” deserves mention). Those years did see some great electronica and trip hop releases, but British rock didn’t really get rolling again until the early 2000s (and it wasn’t Doves driving the revival). It was six years between the debuts of Oasis and Doves, but the six years after Doves saw the debuts of Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party, Amy Winehouse, Gorillaz, Elbow, and more, ushering in an era of British music much better than the prior two decades, regardless of what Robert Dimery is trying to convince us about the 80s.
It was chill and kind of decent.
It was nice. It doesn't just hop on you and try to push the agenda. That's a slow composition. Just for Radiohead fans.
Bra musik. Fina melodier.
Yawn.... 3/5
pleasant enough record but doesn't really speak to me much. i think if i gave it a few more listens, it would grow on me, as it is similar to the type of stuff i typically like. nice melodies, good musicianship. production is a bit bland. but otherwise, pretty alright.
I think I liked the first song the best. Pretty uneven album. The tone is pretty consistent, but some of the songs were pretty generic alt rock (in a bad way).
Some days I'm just a bit distracted and I don't feel like I give my album the full attention it deserves. This was one of those days. I *think* I liked this for the most part, but I need to give it another listen or two to be sure. For now, it's 3 stars.
Fairly soft, ethereal/atmospheric rock
Oops, forgot to do this. It’s alright. C-
classique indie rock album. il s'influence de radiohead a fond. 3 mais bon on sait ce que ca donne. Quelque chose de genre copycat, pas mauvais, mais riende fou
p856. 2000. 3.5 stars Decent enough background music, with no standout tunes. Worth a replay though.
This is completely new to me. I've heard of the band but don't know any of these songs! I feel like it's the missing link between Radiohead and Coldplay. Catch the Sun sounds like if early Coldplay did a Foo Fighters song. I was walking around on a crisp fall day and enjoying this. It sounds nice, nothing blew me away. Overall it's pretty consistent in sound and I didn't skip anything. Stand outs : Here It Comes, Rise, The Man Who Told Everything, The Cedar Room
Hear it comes and Sea Song had made it to a few of my playlists. Yet, I never listened to this LP all the way through until now. This was my loss. This is a great one.
Nothing stood out to me.
This is an easy 3 for me. It's pretty good, I'm enjoying the instrumentation. The lyrics I could go either way on. It's a little bit too droney and kind of meandering, but I could see myself coming back to give it another listen. Repeats: fireside, rise Skips :
I was not interested in the sound of this album. It was way too bland for me. I bumped it up to 3 stars because I liked “The Man Who Told Everything”.
Buen disco de pop-rock con canciones con intensidad (algunas) y con variedad instrumental. No ha destacado especialmente, pero se puede dejar escuchar
Some pretty good ambient/dreamy tones in this. Feels modern, feels like it could've been released anywhere between the 90s-now.
I'd say this was good but not great.
It was alright, I liked a handful of tracks.
Not what I expected and an unusually broad variety in the sound, I found it hard to pinpoint actually. Not sure it quite added up to a cohesive artifact for me, but it's another one I feel deserves further attention.
Pretty good chill
Interesting listen. Probably would love it on a second listen
It provided a baseline enjoyment all the way through. Probably with more listens the songs would start to differentiate themselves but on one listen it seemed really monotonous. 6/10
Not what I expected. A lot of instrumental, almost psychedelic stuff at the beginning, then some oasis copying, and then I thought the back third was not bad. The Man Who Told Everything and The Cedar Room were my faves. Still, would not be on here if they weren’t british.
Not bad. Sounds like a less good version of Cold Play. I don't dislike it, but no reason to be on this list.
Never quite decided what it wants to be. Still, an interesting artifact from the turn of the millennium.
Too depressing, good sounds
I find the sound of Doves to be like someone is used to listening to very stereotypical indie rock but thinks Doves are doing something very interesting because they haven't been exposed to other bands. Much too pedestrian for my tastes.
Decent Manc album, not sure it's essential. 'Catch The Sun' is still awesome but 'Firesuite' is sounding a bit dated now. At this rate I'm going to be reviewing I Am Kloot records.
Seemed okah
Cool sound. The opening track Firesuite felt like a modern/2000's version of shoegaze - but the good kind (like the best of Catherine Wheel) and not the bad kind (like the worst of My Bloody Valentine). But it felt uneven from there, or at least I wasn't as captivated by most of the remaining songs as I was that first one. Catch the Sun reminded me of the Foo Fighters, and that's a good thing. Break Me Gently and Melody Calls both had cool beats reminiscent of other music I can't quite put my finger on (Coldplay maybe - Sea Song definitely had that vibe) but the vocals were so-so (skip the muffled effect on the former and don't let the drummer sing on the latter). This is an album that feels like maybe it grown on me and become a 4, but it didn't quite captivate me enough to test out that possibility.
Having never heard them before, I had a good idea what this would sound like when I saw they were a British Indie Band from 2000. I wasn’t far off but I definitely did underestimate them, this is a strong debut. At just shy of an hour this is an ambitious album, atmospheric and droning at times. It did tend to sag at times for me but I really did enjoy the peaks. Favourite tracks, Firesuite, Sea Song, Catch the Sun. 3.5 stars
It's a complex high quality album but not especially memorable
This was not something I found particularly engaging. Musically it's wonderfully played. For me though it sort of drones on and on and ends up going nowhere as a piece of music. Overall this is not a record I’ll be spinning again.
Rock indie
I really wanted to like this because I really liked The Last Broadcast. This wasn't that. Shame. Best track: Catch the Sun
Sea Song was the stand out, the others range from solid to inoffensive.
Technically the first band I saw live (supporting Travis) but definitely not one I expected to see on this list. A perfectly cromulent band but are they that significant?
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Here it comes, Rise
Pretty good background music. Bit repetitive.
Doves have always been a 'nearly' band for me. I like some of their anthemic later singles but find their music can be a bit dour, a bit plodding, and the start of this album did nothing to dissuade me of that. The second half was a lot better though. Some very pretty stuff on there, which won me over somewhat.
Prvi put kad sam slusao album nije mi se svideo, mislio sam da su previse spore pesme i prazne Ali na drugi listen sam bio vise into it Muzika je za odredjeni mood ali u tom moodu je odlicna Top pesme - Lost Souls, Rise
3.75
Listened twice, couple of really nice songs on there will give their other stuff a go, 3.5
Not bad. Nice background music.
pretty good. That first song, Firesuite, was so familiar but none of the rest. The first track Spotify played after this was from Beck. Definitely an apt comparison, though Beck is a lot better.
It was definitely more atmospheric than the previous Doves album we had, but still pretty boring. It doesn't help that I listened to this in a kind of fugue state while finishing up some urgent work. 6/10
One of the first albums of the new millennia. And to be completely honest, it's good, not great, but good. I was very content listening to this. It screams 3.5 /5, but I can't give SO KNOW that I want to give this a 3.5 not a 3. The Cedar Room also sounds a lot like Yellow by Coldplay.
Indie rock. Ni fu ni fa.
Interesting 90s alt rock sound
Good background music, but that's about it.
Good
I'm legitimately confused as to how the first song has nearly 7 million listens. I mean it is a fine song, but nothing particularly special. Sprawling atmospheric downtempo rock that has a cavernous feel. I dig it just fine, but there isn't a whole lot to sink in to. I listened to this in the background and enjoyed it being there. Listening through a second time a bit more focused and I will say I feel similar. I enjoy Break Me Gently a lot and the transition into Sea Song. Two spread out, no nonsense indie songs erring on the sad side of the spectrum. Sea Song has an interesting progression through the main melody with a lot of movement. The Man Who Told Everything sounds a lot like a RHCP song, but I can't quite place it. In general I found this to be a fairly enjoyable listen front to back, but found it to be more mood / background music than something I could focus on for an extended amount of time. For background music this is a 4.5, for everything else, probably a 3.5, but I'll round down.
I think I liked the first half more it was a little more trippy while the second half become a lot more rock. I enjoyed the whole album but the front half sounded more unique. This is a high 3 for me
It's fine. Nothing to write home about. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio.
I need a little more time in the wild with it, but it feels like a grower. Lush in a good way.
This was fine. Nice vibe and made for good background music. None of the songs stood out for me, but they flowed together nicely.
With a name like "doves" it's gonna be indie nonsense, probably UK *again* and probably unheard of outside the UK. Ok that wasn't too bad really. Not great, it just kinda existed - and did so for a bit too long, in a very "this is from England" way - but I couldn't say I wanted to smash anything out of frustration. 3/5.
Was not expecting a song with no vocals. Good, no bangers, yada yada, 3.5 stars.
It's unclear how much Coldplay copied Doves or Doves copied Coldplay.
Hadn’t heard of this band. Thought it had some good songs, a bit slow in parts, probably be nice to listen to on a road trip. 3.5
Every song very different. Wide range of sounds. Pretty mellow.
This is someone’s favorite album of all time, and I know with a repeat listen, I would appreciate it more. Just the production alone is pretty astounding for 2000. That said, as a first time listener, I found it hard to really get hooked in as every song kind of just went a direction I didn’t care for. I wanted a hit, but maybe they don’t do hits. I will say the back half of the record seemed to flow more freely and sounded a bit more cohesive than the first half. Overall just more enjoyable.
A solid album but the only outstanding track is The Man Who Told Everything.
I've liked other albums from Doves, but this one was boring. Does the producer just walk away from this with a sense of accomplishment or just a "well, that's over with"?
Some good stuff in here but no song stands out. Fine listen.
Pretty generic alternative/hard rock
muito bom, mas nao me pegou. Talvez ouvir no futuro.
Lost Souls sounds like a bridge between late-era Super Furry Animals and Coldplay but in a way that it represents a very bland version of the British indie sound from this era. It's quite boring.
Sleepy and forgettable
Rating: 5/10 These guys again. Wannabe Oasis or wannabe Radiohead or combination of the two, and definitely not distinct or interesting enough for two album inclusions. Went on way way too long. It's a very average rock album, and well performed musically, with a good atmosphere, but just doesn't inspire me in any way. I definitely don't hate it. Just extremely middle of the road stuff
Perfectly average. -1 for the absurdity of the Wikipedia entry.
It's not bad per se but it just feels so empty, lots of pretty soundscapes but I couldn't recognise a single song from this album
ganz nette melodien aber irgendwie kein einziger song der mich richtig gehooked hat.
Never heard of this band before. Not terrible but I’m wondering why it’s on this list.
Just a miss for me. Nothing special and even a bit monotonous and uninspiring.
Doves have better albums
Inoffensive snooze-fest. Does things that would have been cool 30-40 years before it came out but are largely uninteresting by 2000. 2.5/5
Snorefest
I pray for these people.
Boring
Meh
so many great mysteries in this universe, like how is it that i find this album painstakingly slow and languid, but the best song is the one that's almost 8 minutes long
Not doing anything for me.
