Reviews (page 6 of 7)
We had this on in the car while running errands yesterday so my listening wasn't quite as focused as it usually is but I don't think it mattered. This was..... Eh. On the second half of the album I liked some of the janglier, less atmospheric songs. But it wasn't really my thing. It did make me more interested in reading the book that started this whole thing, to find out why someone thinks I needed to hear this before I die. So good advertising, I guess? lol
So, this was a decent listen as background music. Well made, seemed targeted at my indie-rock tastes, some cool guitar sounds, electronics that didn't bother me, songs just fine. I liked it at the first track, but pretty soon it felt like a pop-oriented version of Ride (just removing the noise, the furious drumming, the contrasting vocal harmonies) or a rockist imitation of Portishead. Nothing new here, but it's fine. It sounds like something I might have bought back in the day and then lost under the car seat and never cared about. 2/5
Lost Souls is mostly chill, late night come down music. It's fine, but not extraordinary. Basic grooves, nicely textured. It's competently executed but largely unmoving for me. It's pleasingly dreary though and could complement other records in someone's atmospheric indie collection as a third, fourth or fifth record played at the end of the day as you're ready to fall asleep. It is not, however, an album that anyone *must* hear before or after they've died.
Break Me Gently
Another record on that list that I can't for the life of me understand why it's here. It's not different enough to be noteworthy, nor is it an extremely good example of a genre.
No me encantó.
Best Song: The Man who Told Everything This could win the 2000 award for most, "Meh album." And, I mean that sincerely. It isn't bad, outside of that fact they are trying REALLY hard to be Radiohead and coming up miles shy of that finishing line. But, at the same time, it is NOT good. It is boring, repetitive, and sounds like so many other bands at the time trying to do the same thing. I will never listen to this again. If I want to hear music that sounds like this and that's actually enjoyable, I'll throw on a little Radiohead or even Zero 7. 2/5.
This started really well - a brooding, almost post-rock instrumental which made me think I was wrong about this album. I wasn’t. It dwindled into dull, middle of the road indie rock. Good for what it is, but certainly nothing special or unique. Not necessary to hear before death. Maybe I am being too critical, because everything is played well and the band are more than capable, but yeah….nothing spectacular at all.
The album got old really quick, then it just got kinda bad. Maybe it's not for me, but there really weren't any tracks worth listening to
Disappointingly monotonous. I thought this was going to be better than it was based on the cedar room and a few other tracks I knew from Doves.
Framförallt mot slutet blir det onjutbar foo fighters-och-radiohead-från-temu (catch the sun och the man who told everything).
Coldplay and Radiohead had a dorky baby named Doves the Band of Loves or something.
Mellow Brit psych adjacent alt rock. A side is pretty boring, picks up a little on the B side. Largely unremarkable and not really essential. 2.5⭐️
I honestly zoned this album out for most of its runtime- this is either success or failure, depending on what the artist was going for. As background music it's great, better than Kenny G elevator jazz. If it was meant to be listened to actively then... I don't remember a single song.
2.5 Stars I'm not sure why this was considered an album you should listen to before you die. there are several albums (thus far in this project) that I've enjoyed less than this one. But I'm struggling to think of one that I found more average than this one. There are some nice moments, particularly the ambient tracks but nothing all that interesting. Favorite track: Firesuite
Pretty boring
Overall pretty boring to me. The songs sounded nice and felt good, but were just forgettable.
Meh. Indie. Whatever.
I get it. I didn't particularly enjoy it but I can't say I didn't get it. 4/10
meg
PTN OUI 2.5+/5
Sounds nice i suppose, but a bit one-note - i feel like the album is broadly composed of continual noise with some interesting textures but it lacks some light and shade. Most of it sounds like background music that might be used in a mid film or car advert - more focused on atmosphere and vibes than musicality. It was fine, it sounded nice enough, but it bored me more as it went on.
There's a line from Bojack Horseman where a high-powered PR exec tells a former-actor-turned-civilian, "I am forgetting your face as I'm looking at it." That's what it was like to listen to Lost Souls by Doves. That's not to say I didn't enjoy some of the vibes and some moments of beauty. But it seems very background and insignificant. Also it seems like this guy can't sing?
Kinda dull and inoffensive
This album reminds me of Tony Blair. Make of that what you will.
Not memorable. We had another doves record at almost exactly this time last year and I couldn't even tell you how they differ.
It's ok, not really my thing though
so far it's like Radiohead & Coldplay had a baby. . . This isn't offensive, but I have no clue what makes it special. Is it special? Are there people who hear this, and have their minds blown? Was this the British equivalent of bands like "Lifehouse" and "3 Doors Down"?
This was a chore
Ok album. Was initially interesting, but dragged on after the first few songs. Standout songs: Break me gently The man who told everything
Such a dull album

Bland and uninteresting. The singer sounds as if he’s trying not to fall asleep. The songs are too long and don’t really go anywhere. It has its moments but overall it’s just elevator music.
I sincerely don't get the sense of this kind of music
zzz. npc zika
it has cool sound but i dont like the effect they put over the voice
i dont remember
I quite liked the Cedar Room but most of this was really quite boring
A lot of the percussion was tedious. I skipped a few songs because the persistent drumming was annoying.
I eagerly dove into Lost Souls, the 2000 debut album from Doves, with excitement and suspicion. This was my first post-2000 album arrival from 1001albumsgenerator.com. I wasn't sure that I had ever even heard Doves before. Hence, my suspicion, that an album I had never heard of, from a period were I was voraciously absorbing new music, could somehow be worthy (hubris, mine) of a spot on this list. Hence, also, my excitement to be shown something worthy I had possibly missed out on. I would like to think I am an adventurous and eager listener. Lost Souls, though, was challenging for me to take on in 2025 and without context (aside from the release year). It left me initially confused as to why it would be on a list (albeit incredibly lengthy) of essentials. This confusion paves way for the importance of talking about the context and history behind music. For height-of-Pitchfork, internet-era music in particular, like Lost Souls, context and history dissolve from the centers of the music's creation, outward in a confounding, diffuse, murky cloud of keyboard consensus, media validation, and hype. With any question of the existence hype, there is also reflexive anti-hype. Do I like this album? Not particularly. Being suspicious of Doves being a product of hype, and wanting to be a fair listener, I remained open-ears, and aiming for equal suspicion of any anti-hype tendency within my self. Lost Souls has some great moments. "The Cedar Room" is an engaging song that carries sensitivity below the surface, submerged by dense lead-weight ballast of careful, restrained playing. The song, like the rest of the album, seems to want to let the studio speak first. Putting production first seems to come at the expense of many potential opportunities to make rock music like this more lively or engaging. There are far too many examples of studio-first approaches to music that utterly just *work*, to excuse the missteps of Lost Souls. Dub, Disco, House. It's almost a failure of translation, where Lost Souls thesis seems to approach making a pure rock record with a club music ethos. (Spoiler alert: these guys used to make House music.) The album dutifully chugs along like an armored boat on a ride at Dracula's carnival. Everything is amazingly recorded. The work put into the effects alone is absolutely noteworthy. Everything is on rails, though. Old Ironsides isn't built for tight steering, it seems. The best in-song surprises in the album come in the form of sudden textural shifts: a harmonica enters or carnival organ motif suddenly surrounds us. Each song is a dirge, with the majority of surprise-in-variety occurring with one song ending, and a new song's motif entering. The problem with this, though, is that as the album progresses, it ventures further from the interesting embarkation point of "Firesuite's" dubby post rock, into very normal, been-there-heard-that banal rock territory. I could possibly be more generous to the the final songs on the album ("Catch the Sun", onwards) but the ride is like starting at Portishead-without-cigarettes and landing on Dramamine Radiohead. My feelings on the music aside, I can see a clear argument for the inclusion of this album on the 1001 list. First off, it was a massive debut success in the UK. As an American, I'm aware my own context for listening gets jaded by UK/US differences in culture and reception to music. More importantly, behind this album is a story of Manchester and the legendary Hacienda club. Dove's prior incarnation, Sub Sub, formed through late nights and dancing. They made very good House music. (I learned about Sub Sub from reading about Doves, and I'm far more stoked to have learned of former.) In unrelated events, Hacienda closed and Sub Sub's studio burned down. Doves rose from literal ashes, to take on a new post-House, post-Hacienda vision. I get the inclusion of Doves on the list. I want to endorse the band's thesis behind this album. I don't find the results all that original or compelling. --- - Do/Did I own this prior? No. - If so, how has this day in the project changed my view of the album? n/a - Otherwise, do I look forward to listening to this again? No. - Is this album's inclusion on the list justified? Arguably yes, but at a stretch.
not rlly my type i guess but i see why its good
Most of this sounded samey and droning. A few tracks at the end caught my attention, but overall I felt like I had nothing to latch onto when listening to this album.
Saai
I kept waiting for them to be something more. Just could get fully into it. Relaxing, but missing something
Ehh britpop radiohead
Found this boring and repetitive and fairly depressing. Utterly unnecessary. 2
Nice mixture of sounds for a chill evening. 2 stars.
As somebody who thought I was vaguely familiar with Doves’ music, it turns out I was not.
Dull.
Dull
I don't think this needs to be on the list....
#34 Good first half but back half droned on, almost off-key, could've been 3/5
I forgot I was listening to it at one point. Maybe if I am the right amount of drunk at 1am I would love it
Meh
there's a surplus of brit music on here and this falls into that category. It's perfectly OK, but not a MUST listen. It sounds like oasis and RH had a baby was out of wedlock so it's not's properly raised. I could see listening to this high could be enjoyable
The first half sounded like off brand Radiohead and the second half sounded like off brand Coldplay. Guess this was a UK thing? "Sea Song" was alright.
this very much had reminded me of Radiohead. it wasn't a /bad/ album, but i probably wouldn't revisit it. not to say that it wasn't good, but it just wasn't for me.
Some of it was pleasant and some of it was a bit grating.
This must be a British book. Not sure I "Needed to hear this before I died".
This sounded similar to a lot of the techno lofi beats I listen to today, but I like my beats without lyrics. The doves had lyrics, mostly indiscernible, and that's not my jam. However Rise came on while I was night driving and it put me in a cool cruising trance. Never heard of this band before. There's something here, but I don't know what it is.
catch the sun, before its gone...
No, I didn’t like this at all.
Best debut album since Oasis? Nope. Mediocre stuff that has been made dozens of times before and after. Nothing original or surprising, least of all memorable.
Showgaze is absolutely terrible. No mas
Fairlyyyyyy dull. The Man Who Told Everything was okay though. Do love that it came out on 01/01/00 too.
Enjoyed first few, but rest were not my type of music
I remember there being some buzz around this band when this album released, but don't recognize/remember any of the songs... we'll, except several songs reminded me of other, better songs. Which is never a great look.
It's alright, but there's nothing here which really grabbed me. It all sounds perfectly pleasant, but yeah... It slightly drifts off into a Stereophonics sound at times, but more like late-career Stereophonics, which is a shame.
First time hearing it. So the drums sound great on this album. Drummer is good, and they sound good. A couple songs I liked, and I didn't really hate anything on it. Maybe it's a bit too sappy in parts, maybe too airy, and a little boring for me. I don't like this style of vocals either. Not bad, but can't see myself coming back to it. Best songs: Melody Calls (really liked this one), Sea Song, Firesuite
Eh…. Better than KISS’s 1998 ass dragger “Psycho Circus”, but certainly boring imo. Might check it out again in headphones for a different viewpoint, but for now…
Just okay. 3.2/10
This was too slow moving overall. There was one song that had more engaging pacing, but the album still fell flat with me.
wish radiohead
i’ve always liked catch the sun cos it sort of sounds like a foo fighters song and i was hoping the rest of the album was going to have the same vibe but i was disappointed
It is not even that bad, I just can't get into it. Not sure what the vibe is. Kinda like Oasis, but more subtle and instrumental. 4/10
Just another seriously dull album on this list. 2 stars or D-.
Kind of a middling indie album that carries a lot of 90s vibes with it into the year 2000.
I shouldn't be doing this, but I frequently have the reviews open while listening to the albums, and by the time the second song's vocals started, I understood. What am I supposed to hear in this album? It's other bands in a blender resulting in the average: a beige mush of somewhat competently dressed up but boring songs. It doesn't aggravate me, but it has no business being on this list. As I was saying, back in June: → "As I was saying, a couple of months ago:" →→ "As I was saying, just three days ago:" →→→ "is this really a Best of All Music? An essential listen? Or another instance of the editors merely completing their assignment of counting up to 1001 by shoveling copious amounts of - all British or Irish - Mercury Prize winners or nominees in here? Yes, it's the latter."
It’s ok. I just know I still can’t die now.
Dull sub radiohead
Not for me
so mid lol
That was a bit boring if I'm honest - I'm glad I wasn't driving while listening to it cause I would have most likely fallen asleep
Lost Souls has a mood to it, but it never really pulled me in and I’m not sure I feel like giving it anymore time to grow on me.
Typical indie band stuff.
Middle of the road. Fairly uninspiring stuff
It’s easy listening for sure. I like it I made coffee while listening. A 2.75
Why in the world is this song on the list? It's not good. It's not innovative. It's not influential. It's not important in any way. It's not unique. It's not memorable. It's not interesting. It's not well written. It's not well played. It's not well produced. It's not even bad enough to be interesting or polarizing. There is not a single reason why anybody must listen to this.
Didn’t mind some bits but it did feel like a somehow worse elbow at parts
this was absolutely not something i needed to hear before i died. or ever. repetitive, boring, formulaic and far far too long
Just couldn’t get into this. Interestingly the one song I recognised was from a Mitchell and Webb sketch called fishmonger out of water monger. So that was a nice throwback
This isn’t my vibe but I can appreciate the instrumental
Wow, j'ai écouté ça hier pis j'm'en rappelle même pu!
Pretty boring. My usual genre but pretty low mood throughout
** Did‘t know them, have not missed anything
Snoozefest
ok the reallllly unfortunate thing is the fact that this came after rem and like even the mid rem album we just had made this seem extra mid sorry this couldn’t be an objective evaluation but it’s no contest
And as a surprise to no one, the 1001 albums general editor is British
it's giving early aughts network tv soundtrack, and i'm into it.
It wasn’t really my thing
What? A Doves album the day after reviewing another Doves album? On my first listen, it's another dreary dull album. An opinion that doesn't change on further plays.
I mean, yeah? It’s ok. It’s kind of forgettable. Best debut album since definitely maybe? Eeeh. I suppose. Do I need to hear it again? Not really. It’s pleasant enough. But? I suspect this is someone’s youth rather than a truly important album.
'Lost Souls'? More like 'Lost Interest'. I found myself constantly drifting off to sleep while listening to this at 10am. This album is yet more evidence that Mercury Prize nomination is a strong indicator of dull mediocrity. Contrary to its inclusion on this 1001 albums list, you could (and should) lead a long, happy and fulfilled life without ever hearing this album by these tepid Coldplay-wannabes. You know you're in a charisma-free zone when you find yourself wishing for Chris Martin to turn up and give things a bit of life. Heaven help me. It made so little impact on me, that I have just finished listening to it and cannot remember anything about it. Forgettable and bland and a bit of a slog, like eating a bowl of cardboard.
Reminds me of Coldplay.
Meh
Feels s focus grouped Brit pop album
Hmmm. It's fine I guess (fun fact - I was once on the same flight as Doves from UK -> America. They were ......................... perfectly nice and polite)
Subpar indie blah blah
I really like Guy Garvey as a Radio host. But I've never got on with Doves melancholic northern blandness. There's probably a time and a place for it, in just yet to find it.
Simple soft rock. Nothing much here.
It’s alright, I didn’t really feel much listening to this. I feel like I should like this more than I do, it seems well done but I can’t connect with any of it and it seems bland. Maybe listening at the right time makes this album worth listening to but I just have no desire to revisit this.
It might have been better if they had found some of those lost Souls.
Sucks
A complete nothing-burger album. Shouldn’t be on this list.
Definitely not my style of music.
Previously rated: The Last Broadcast (2/5) **************************** I completely forgot I had heard this band before, 800 albums ago. They both ended up with the same rating, though, so my opinion hasn't changed. This is some boring-ass rock music. When Catch the Sun started playing, I thought it was an ad at first because of how different it sounded from the rest of the album. It sounds like a generic Foo Fighters song, but it’s still the standout track. The rest of the album is almost Radiohead level bad.
Just your run of the mill album nothing really special about this to me
Meh. Nothing bad. Nothing good. Just Meh. Overly mellow and completely uninspiring.
weird, not my cuppa
Like Radiohead but shit
Not really memorable
Catch the sun sounded familiar but the remainder was forgettable
It was alright, but nothing memorable.
What is this drone? Why is this good? How did this get on the list?
Like the melancholic vibe, overall 2.5 stars overall. Enjoyed it but bit of a slog to get through a full album.
"the first great album to come from Manchester since Definitely Maybe...". Nonsense. The Verve is just one example and their 1997 album is miles ahead of this. It's Radiohead if they were from Manchester and shite. This doesn't belong on this list. 2/5.
Indierock, ikke rigtig noget at råbe hurra for
Pretty and sad. is bringing me down though. The first few songs in particular were excruciating too.
I guess someone left this at my old job and I listened to it a few times? I guess? But not really clicking for me.
This just didn't do anything for me. Seemed safe and cliche. No song stood out. 2 stars.
This is either a hungover or post club album, listening to it any other time just doesn’t feel right
Found this just to be boring. Nothing really stood out as the album droned on in the background of my morning. Can’t believe this was a highly rated album.
A very bland record, felt like everything melted together
Weird, spacey, slow and boring.
Inoffensive and forgettable.
I’m always excited for a modern band that I haven’t really heard of before but this was honestly just kind of boring to me. Nothing really stood out. Not bad but meh.
Nothing wrong here but it really didn't do anything for me. It's just early 2000s pop like rocky thing. It's just not very compelling. It's not bad but it's nothing.
I forgot this album even while I was listening to it.
2/5. This might be a good drums and bass band but it kind of feels like someone took already established instrumental songs and added lyrics to them. I can't remember what the songs were even about just that they had a good beat. Then all of a sudden in the second half, they are making regular pop-rock songs. Some of them stand out but overall, not anything crazy there either. I wouldn't say this was terrible but it's not down my alley. Not a 1 because the instrumentals were good and one or two songs were actually kind of good. But this is background music at best. Best Song: The Cedar Room, Firesuite, Melody Calls
It's ok
Wikipedia calls this the best debut album since Definitely Maybe but I swear I've never heard of this band. At the same time some of the songs here felt quite familiar, I'm not sure if I'd heard them somewhere before or they just remind me of other songs from the era. It's a deeply inoffensive and uninspired album, can I listen to Oasis instead? 2/5
Exceptionally mediocre uninspired pop rock. I did like the instrumental "Firesuite" but otherwise was unsure why this is on here.
This is such a "the brits are at it again" pick. It's fine.
2,5
Who album felt like background music, but like sad background music. Not sure when you would ever want to listen to this. Didn't like that the lyrics were relegated to the back of the mix so you don't really hear them.
Remembered these guys a bit more fondly than I maybe should have. A sort of proto-version of the indie rock of my youth, stuff I found really compelling at the time but find kind of bland now. Maybe over simplifying, but this album made me think of Spoon, but not as good.
2 out of 5.
Sorry, Doves, but this hits me like untoasted white bread. Bland.
“Lost Souls is considered by many to be the best debut album since Oasis' Definitely Maybe” Who is this “many” Like the most boring Coldplay imaginable. Back third of the album is slightly better but not by much.
Its like an experimental psychedelic alt rock album. But at the end of the day it feels more like background noise to me than a set of songs.
The UK bias rears its ugly head again! It’s not that this is horrid, but I didn’t need to hear it and I won’t listen to it again. Most tracks have some good stuff going on, but then go on for another two unnecessary minutes. I’m tired now and I’m supposed to go to the gym later. I might have to save the rest for later, but this isn’t getting better than a 2 anyway.
Bland, generic early-2000’s British “indie” “rock” of absolutely no import or significance. This list is a joke.
Very Coldplay
indie rock deftones
Nothing really stood out on this record. 2/5
This what I imagine indie sounds like to the average person. They don't like it and honestly, I don't blame them.
beh
Boring.
some interesting sounds, but it gets pretty dreary by two thirds of the way through
1. fire - 2 2. here - 1.5 3. break - 1.5 4. zea - 1.5 5. rize - 1 6. zoulz - 1 7. melody - 1 8. zun - 1 9. man - 1 10. cedar - 1.5 11. reprize - 2 12. houze - 1
Sorry. Chan nöd conecte.
I had to look it up; Steven Wilson is NOT in this band.... They do have a few good moments on here, but mostly I found this album to be resoundingly mediocre.
1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die...If You're British?
This album is quite underwhelming. At one point, I didn't even notice it was still on! It gives off some serious Band of Horses snooze-fest vibes.
Well, that was fucking boring.
It’s alright
More hipster pop that is mildly entertaining, but not enough to engage my jaded, opinionated tastes.
Meh, sounded like a Radiohead cover band.
1001 (sort of ok underwhelming) ALBUMS (from random obscure artists from the 1990s beloved by British music critics that haven’t maintained any relevancy or influence) YOU MUST(unfortunately)LISTEN TO BEFORE YOU DIE(soon I hope)
Underwhelming.
Fav song: Sea Song Not a bad album, a little bland in places but had some interesting tunes. I like how much the singer sounds like Dave Grohl at times and how sometimes the instrumentals are reminiscent of Radiohead, but I feel like this is another band from the 2000’s who struggled to find their identity. Maybe they got better in later albums.
Was this designed to wash over people? Apart from where the drums are way too high in tbe mix, there's nothing to attract attention. It's not unpleasant, I just struggled to pay attention - it's like a musical weather forecast.
So my first impression of this CD is that it sucked, and I think that's largely because the beginning of the CD really does suck. But the back half is significantly better than the first. It's another of those fin-de-siècle somewhat genre-less British CDs that this guy really likes, in the same vein as Travis and Badly Drawn Boy. Relative to those two it's generally gloomier. I don't like it as much as Travis, but it's on-par with BDB. So yeah, the first half is awful. It opens with a long, boring instrumental. I honestly can't for the life of me understand why you would do that. Even once they get to the point, the first several songs are incredibly monotonous. "Here It Comes" and especially "Sea Song" are really the same thing over and over again for 5 or 6 minutes. They're a 1-of-5 straight slog. The band really starts to find their footing with "Melody Calls", which is the first borderline-normal song. Thereafter the whole CD is pretty solid. "Catch The Sun" has some really clever changes and a very cool sound - it's just a catchy song. That's the standout highlight. Overall though this is like a 3-4 on the back half and a low 1 on the front half. I prefer that order over the reverse, but all-in it's still just OK.
2 sterne

It became background noise. Ameturitistic but a very clean sound. Generic. Seems like they liked to jam a bit more than have a structured song as there was not a lot of lyrics/vocals throughout. 4/10
Boring but at least listenable i guess?
Maybe when I get the other Doves album I’ll be in a better mood for this one. Influences and cover art looks like something I’d like but didnt. :/ Rating: 2.4
While not objectionable, this was overlong and too pretentious for its own good. I can see exactly why this was selected for the list - it fits exactly into what the MeldodyMaker/NME type journos fanwanked over at the time, but bears little merit outside that context. Better than contemporary acts, though.
Tedious; I found absolutely zero entertainment value in this album.
Only listened to a couple if tunes will listen tomorrow
This was semi interesting, but just really droned on too much for me, then a few more catchy songs at the end didn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the album. Wouldn’t recommend
Mostly sets a mood and feel (“late night after hours” they say) but kinda boring other than a few songs, though even the songs I liked weren’t particularly memorable. Fire Suite was actually a cool start to the album with a trip hoppy kinda riff. Just felt like things never took off from there, though Lost Souls was pretty weird. The vocalist is a bit poppy and falsetto-y for my taste, preferring when the vocals are more effected and reverb-soaked. Inoffensive, just didn’t really have any impact on me. I prefer The Last Broadcast, and that I thought was ok.
A weird alt-rock type of album, it almost felt like different bands making so many of these songs. I really don't know what to make of this one. A couple tracks I did enjoy, but scratching my head at this inclusion. Favorite tracks: Here It Comes, A House. Album art: Looks to be a guy on stage, lights casting shadows far behind him. The lights are most of what you can see. Also, black and white. Doesn't add up to much. 2.5/5
meandering pink floyd but if it was coldplay
Pre-listening thoughts: I have never heard of this band or album (lots of albums I'm gonna repeat that sentiment with on this list!). I don't even have an inkling of what this will sound like. Post/during listening thoughts: Am i tweaking where are the vocals. Ok wait nevermind the opening was just an instrumental phew! Thought this was a weirdo soundscape album. It sounds like aimless Coldplay. Choppy vocals on Break Me Gently are not doing it for me. This is like lowkey the most forgettable genre of music for me. I am zoning out so hard rn this is so boring lol. Why is every song so long like bring back the 3 minute song! 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: absolutely not Fav tracks: Melody Calls, Catch the Sun Least fav tracks: Break Me Gently
Not horrible but not memorable anywhere either. Rounding down.
First half OK, 2nd half not so much.
Style over substance. I generally dug the vibe on here, but boy the compositions are lacking. And after three songs it all just started to sound the same.
Inventing maudlin cinematic jangle pop only 30+ years after everyone else.
"Firesuite" was the best track. The rest of the songs were pleasant enough to listen to without having anything really jump out from the others. This has some flashes of Coldplay (not sure which group came first). That's not a bad thing, but this album felt just a little too safe for me.
"Lost Souls" is the debut studio album by British indie rock band Doves. Without any hooks, this album sounds like mediocre background music to a RPG, and is worsened by the overlaying whiney, overly produced vocals and totally harmonica. "Catch the Sun" is probably only single worth listening to and comparing Doves to Oasis is offensive.
Boring boring boring.
not really a fan, but i see the appeal
This was a weird one...I didn't hate or even dislike anything, but I will never seek this album or them out again. Their music is in my preferred genre so I could like something by them but nothing in this album pulled me in to want to investigate them as a band further.
It exists ... And it's music. Really not memorable.
bit dull
# Playlist track - Firesuit # Notes - Solid opening track (Firesuit) and follow-up (Here It Comes). - On Break me Gently, the "breaking" effect on the vocals is overdone and distracts from the song, which wouldn't be bad if it didn't sound like it was streamed over a bad connection. -1 star. - The rest of the album sits between "nice" and "forgettable" most of the time. - The band doesn't bring enough variety to fill the entire hour of the album. The damn "breaking" effect comes back in the beginning of "The Cedar Room" (the most listened to song in Spotify) and I can't help but skip it every time. -1 star - Reprise and A House are completely unnecessary filler and add nothing to the experience. -1 star
2.5
It reminds vocally of Anthony Kiedis a bit…without obviously copping…which is nice. I prefer lower register lead vocals…with some low end resonance…it’s refreshing in pop music as there is not near enough of these artists who get the spotlight they deserve.
The album art is freaking me out a little. Is this two different photos? The music is less interesting. Atmospheric, sure, but not a vibe I'm ever looking for. It's fine for what it is. Did I *need* to hear it? I don't think so.
2.5
A whole lotta meh.
So. Boring.
Meh.
Kind of good but also kind of boring lol
Musically kinda interesting... Don't have anything else nice to say.
Still don't like the lead singers voice. This was ok.
The first song really drew me in, but it turned out to be a regular British indie album from the early 2000s.
Maybe if this album didn’t have the misfortune of coming to me the day after an Adele album it would have fared better- but by comparison it’s just really boring
Apparently I loved Doves’ last album (The Last Broadcast) on our list. But I can’t remember any of the songs! That does not bode well. My impression overall is: could have been worse, but not great. Dunno if this is unfair, but I get the feeling that nothing really... happened. Maybe it’s the fact that the vocal is mixed so far down, it would be unmemorable if it wasn’t simply inaudible. I think the band and their decisions are really in sync, there’s a lot of sympathetic vibrations and good band play. But the vocal makes Snow Patrol feel risky and alive! This does fill in a missing puzzle piece for me, between Blur and Radiohead on one end and something like Coldplay, very soon to come. But it's far, far less exciting than any of the things I just mentioned, the songs aren't tight, and I have a feeling we aren't going anywhere. Really, the first song made this out sound much more interesting than it ended up being. Could do without this. 2/5
The three first tracks, which try to create an atmosphere but only create background muzak, make me lose interest so much that I think this will be a drag to finish. Then comes an interesting guitar pattern in Sea Song, with vocals that brings to mind OK Computer era Radiohead, and it's quite good, apart from the fact that it lasts six minutes and doesn't really go anywhere. Then the snoozefest starts again with Rise and continues for 3 tracks. I understand what they're trying to do, and why people might like it, but it's not my cup of tea at all. I'd rather listen to Sigur Ros all day long. Catch the Sun and The Man Who Told Everything and lift my spirits a little, being more guitar-oriented and poppy, before the album ends up in an underwhelming manner. Electric guitars are few and far between in this project, aren't they?
Like a worse Oasis listened through the lense of a conch shell. Low 2.
I read this band was #1 in the UK during their heyday. But the UK also gave us Coldplay and Oasis. That’s a big pile of “meh,” for me.
I liked the first song & catch the sun
Not that great, not sure why.
Too long. Boring. Idk or c why I had to listen to this. Here It Comes is good though.
ok
Firesuite // 2.5/5
Not really that great or interesting by any means. Nice but kind of a bore.
hui, veery atmospharic
Radiohead, portishead, Coldplay. Good festival band but fairly in ineffectual. Too derivative and middle of the road to warrant a great score even tho I didn’t hate it.
Didn't hate it but by the time I finish writing this I have already forgot about the whole album.
Listened Before? N Eh didn't really stick out to me. There's too many early 2000's indie rock records on this list so far. They all blend together. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Catch the Sun
Starts off slow, but gets better. Some of the songs are good, but nothing really catches the ear. 2.5/5 Likely won’t listen again
Tepid.
Two stars all the way.
Honestly, largely forgettable. Sounds like Coldplay if they were less interesting. I don’t really understand why this made it into the book. It has almost no edge. No intrigue. The arrangements are nice and it’s pleasant enough to listen to I guess but it’s just…there. Can’t win them all. Standout tracks: Firesuite, Lost Souls, Catch the Sun,
Sounds like Coldplay trying to be Oasis trying to be Radiohead. 2.5 stars
The album just never seemed to pick up any steam whatsoever
Tasapainoinen muttei silti ollut kamalan kiinnostava. 2/5
Lopun The Cedar Room on kans toimiva biisi.
The aughts were a lost decade in England for me, mainly due to the ubiquitous, dreaded Brit-Pop that seemed to be everywhere and you don't want to get me started on Brit-pop. I must admit that the Doves are better than the average Oasis or Blur though but the vocal styling of this genre still grates me.
Didn't capture my attention today.
This sounded a lot like coldplay but managed to somehow be even more boring, quite an achievement honestly. Needless to say, I didn't really like it.
I just somehow don't bite electronic music.
Appreciated it a bit more having read the notes of where it came from etc but still just not my thing.
This is just ok. So so so uninteresting though. 2 stars on sort of principle
Meh
I don't get this album at all. It's trying to be a lot of things, or pulling from lots of sources, but doesn't do any one thing well. I hear little bits of all the 90s bands that came before them, but I'd rather just listen to any of those bands. Super mid. 2.25/5
Feels sonically muddy. Like it’s trying to be deeper than it actually is.
This album was such a slog. It doesn’t deserve to be on this list. While it’s not as sonically displeasing as some of the other albums I gave a 2, it’s not good enough to be pleasant background music or interesting enough to stand out.
Decently atmospheric background music. As with most of these early 2000's indie bands, the singer adds almost nothing.
I was thankful for having a couple of days without having to endure some britpop bullshit on this list, and then came these guys.
Great sounds but it didnt really take me anywhere
Erster Eindruck: eigentlich ganz geil. größtenteils instrumental, vielleicht sogar komplett instrumental.
It was just kind of there. It was tolerable. It was a longer album. It was better than a 2 but not really a 3.
It wasn't bad, but it just kinda droned on for an hour. I cant remember any of it
A rather inconsistent album: some of it offers nice atmospheric tracks, while the rest of it is best classified as "nothing special". By tomorrow, I'll forget all about this one.
“Mom, can we have some Coldplay?” “No, we have Coldplay at home.” Coldplay at home:
I enjoyed it while I heard it, but it was pretty promptly forgotten.
A blend of Radiohead and Blur, with a dash of Oasis. I didn't mind it at first, but as the album drug on, I could no longer stand it.
2/5 Not my style Tone and musicality were fine, I can see the appeal
It’s ok as background noise when you’re trying work but I need someone to explain why it’s on this 1001 list.
This was enjoyable enough, but I doubt I will revisit it. A couple of the songs had a cool sort of loungey vibe. It’s definitely chill.
i don’t know. i thought this was kind of boring. not for me.
All right
This was incredibly boring
Wasn’t keen on this the first time I heard it. Liked it better the second time, good chill after hours vibes. Not sure I’d return to it though.
Really enjoyed the instruments and sound, singer was annoying to listen to
New to me, both the band and their music. I really like this album. The sound and style are familiar to me and I have a feeling the familiarity is because of the influence of bands like this, or at least this band reflects the evolving trends at the time. Not sure how to describe the sound and style. Kind of lo-fi maybe, with indie rock feel? I am not usually good at matching what I hear to categories and names. I don't really put a lot of energy into that so I think that's why I sometimes stumble with wording. The tracks felt a little repetitive after a while but 'Melody Calls' stands out for me a bit.
Okay background music.
Just had no interest in this one.
I lost something listening to this, not sure it was my soul though. Some interesting parts here and there but most of the songs felt like they dragged and plodded along. Bland
This album is boring, I have no other words
Don't get me wrong. It's good. I enjoy it. But it's very bland and forgetful and just kind of nothing. It feels like a dozen TV theme songs.
Idk, it's not _bad_ but it just feels devoid of any heart or soul.
Hard no
You know it’s going to be terrible when Wikipedia starts with something like “ … is the debut studio album by British indie rock band” 1.42
Crap, my fridge makes more interesting sounds at midnight.
Why are there so many British punky rock albums. They can't all be the best album ever. I just don't think any of them are that different. Ts is not groundbreaking bro. I like this it just feels like the logical continuation of what the last album I got on here was. Just kinda emo punky rock. Interesting but chill. Just kinda why. Like white guy crooning in a mic idc. Unremarkable tbh. Oh wait. Hold on. Follow that tyune. Yeah alright. Sure. Trying so hard to be edgy and just kinda hitting boring. I mean it's different but idk if that's a good thing. Just hitting every genre really. Favourite: Sea Song/Rise Least favourite: Lost Souls
I had never listened to this band before, but I remember that an old school friend liked their music. When I saw that “Lost Souls” was the album of the day, I sent him a message and he said it was “the better one”. Upon listening, I couldn’t help but think that if THIS is the better one, I dread to think what the others are like. It’s whiny, slow, depressing, unoriginal, pretentious, dated and boring. Everything wrong with post Britpop. Some of it sounds like a rubbish Coldplay cover band tried to write their own songs and this was the result. Nothing worthwhile to be found here.
no me gustó, indie? deja.
😴
Didnt get me. To be honest I didnt really listen.
I understand that it's difficult to rate the potential legendary status of recent albums. Also, I understand that this list of albums is heavily British-oriented. However, I think these examples also show how lazily this work/book has been done and I'm tired of the British's egotism and such bad records.
I have never heard of this album or group before but man so boring. That Y2K wasteland indie brit music is soooooooo boring.
Decently atmospheric mid tempo indie radio rock but it's so bloated and aimless and the vocals are a whiny bore, Thom Yorke rip off but lacking any angst or dynamism. The strummy acoustic guitars are meant to give it energy but just make it tiresome. Some good instrumental passages with shimmering guitar leads and the feel of explosions in the sky doing Champagne Supernova, really pushing for epic and sweeping, but ruined by the whinging singing. Favorite: Rise
Boring shite
To albums af den her kunstner alligevel? Ok
