Reviews (page 7 of 7)
This album is ok. I really like the guitar and drums and overall sound of the band, but the singing just ruins it for me. Some songs his singing works and I enjoy them, but for the majority of the songs I didn't like it. Favorite song: Yeah We Know Worst song: Don't
Well Rock n Roll will never die
Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say, “It’s not for me, but if you enjoy this kind of thing then you’ll love this album.” Only problem is I’m the sort of person who enjoys this kind of thing, and I really did not like this record. It’s punchy, riffy noise-rock, but it just sounds so anaemic to me. The songs themselves are all so average that they don’t really rise above a bad Husker Dü B-side with a noodling solo from J Mascis in the middle. I can see why this record deserves to be on the list. It’s an interesting approach for 1988, but this record has not aged well. “Pond Song” was good though. That’s about it for me.
This may very well be the best representation of 'noise rock' that we have had on this project thus far; it very often seemed to be exactly that: noise. There were moments where I liked this, but the noise factor got old pretty quickly. I didn't even mind that the singer was kind of incoherent in that quintessential 90s alternative way; the problem was that it was SO mumbly that the music was drowning it out, anyway. And when he wasn't mumbly, he was discordant and unappealing. Overall, an interesting precursor to what would become 90s alternative rock, but I was pretty indifferent on this album. Saving the worst for last, special shout out to "Don't", the most noisy and awful song on the album. I almost gave the album a 1 for this song alone.
Forgettable, I like the previous album. This on was just fine.
S’alright inni?
Run of the mill grunge
While listening to the first few songs on the album, my expectations weren't very high. I thought that maybe it just wasn't for me and considered skipping the album altogether. I'm glad I did keep going because after Yeah We Know, I liked some of the rest better. However, the songs still felt quite repetitive to me, even if I ended up not minding a few of them. I'd be interested to hear some of their other stuff to see if I'd like it more. The songs I liked a bit better than the rest: Yeah We Know, Let It Ride, Don't
Nja
This is definitely good musically but the vocal delivery bothers me and most of the songs don't catch me quite enough to make up for it. Definitely not one I'll be going back to any time soon.
Dinosaur Jr. is a band that supposedly inspired and influenced plenty of 90s groups and genres, including grunge and Nirvana, shoegaze and My Bloody Valentine, or just alt rock with Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead as the most known ones. Dinosaur albums, including "Bug", are regarded as well before its time and revolutionary to the genres mentioned above. But how does it sound now, after around 40 years? Does the music defend itself on its own? The answer is no. The album itself was very uneventful. You could hear the specific droning sound in guitars and vocal, but the songs just slowly blend into one long noisy background sound. I feel like this might be a prime example of band doing something innovative just for the sake of it, without any flesh or substance behind. Just when I thought the whole album will be just yesterday's fever dream, last song came in with a breath of fresh air. "Don't" has an aggressive vocal, more prominent guitars and it instantly wakes you up from the self-induced coma we suffered from the rest of the album. In fact, that last song actually brings down the rest of the record, because it shows how good the album could sound. With all those predicaments taken into account, I can definitely say the album didn't stand test of time well.
Some songs are pretty decent. Others are just noise. This is not a great album.
Still not feeling rock from this era, the kind of muffled sign. The singer also struggles a bit.
rock basico
As is with most rock albums, I can appreciate the guitar work more than anything else. The production is a bit too noisy for my taste, and the vocals are whiny to my ear (as is the case with much alternative-indie rock). I appreciated the heavier and more melodic moments, but they were too far and few between. The second listening was better than my first, but I still don't see myself returning to this album.
Sorry, this is just not for me. Noise rock? I really tried and "Freak Scene" was not bad but "Don't" was, well, not good.
"No bones" is right, muddy song-bodies sprawled out with heads stuck to them which are momentarily excellent. The opening fifteen seconds are the fleshiest example. Cover's the best part. Bugs don't have any bones.
Actually started out extremely song before heading off a cliff towards the end. Those first three songs are bangers, and it's almost like the band felt that was all the album needed. Not for nothing, but the band's name bothers the shit out of me. So does the lead singer.
This is around the time the 80s stopped being fun. The whole album is a forebearer to the Grunge movement, but worse. The singing here is atrocious, and the music hardly is any better. Good compositions are nowhere to be found. 1.5/5
It was fine and I mostly forgot it was playing in the background and then "Don't" came on. Lost a star for that alone.
“Bug” is a great title for this album
Very noisy. Not much more to say. It wasn't horrendous but I definitely didn't enjoy it.
I do find this grunge genre really dreary. I think Nirvana worked because they used the Pixies blueprint. I feel no love for this. Its fast frantic and unmemorable. I don't actively hate it it just leaves me empty. Not much else to say.
Didn’t enjoy the singing at all, so hard to appreciate the music. I can see that a lot of 90’s alt rock were influenced by this record, so I appreciate the contribution
Sounds like an OK sixth form band.
Pretty bland
Why don't I like you? I think it's mostly the whiny sounding vocals. Also might be (and I know this makes me sound old) the fact that a lot of this sounds like noise. Wasn't a fan then, not really enjoying it now either. 2 stars.
This was pretty rough. I like parts and disliked others. It's for sure a mixed bag for now.
Mostly OK, except that \"Don't\" is physically painful to listen to and is literally one of the worst songs on 134 albums I've listened to so far.
2/5 no, and maybe irritating.
5/10
Not as good as Blind Melon
I enjoyed the instrumentation, cool guitar riffs, I disliked the vocals. I greatly disliked Don't. Favourite songs: none I would add to a playlist, but Freak Scene and Keep the Glove were the two I liked on the album
some good moments but most of the album annoying
A band that is constantly referenced when talking about bands that I like (most notably, My Bloody Valentine). But I don't get the connection. Because this is mostly slacker rock, not shoegaze like MBV. Putting that aside, I did enjoy this. Some really great Fender clean guitar tones on the verge of breakup. I also like the doubled crappy vocals (in the choruses) and how they contrast with the single-take verses. Adds the thinnest veneer of polish and takes this record from sounding like it was recorded 100% live. Still, though, I'm not sure this sold me on the Dino Jr.
Boring, nothing special
Nothing special
why dont u
The first song is good, but then the quality goes down. Too noisy and too much distortion, so everything sounds basically the same. "Don't" is awfully scary.
I'm starting to dislike rock and this album helps me hate it more
Not my thing either really!
Honestly had a tough time finishing this, but a 1 did feel too harsh. I enjoyed the first song a good bit, but disliked this more and more as the album went on. Not for me
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: No Bones, Pond Song Cutting Edge: Yeah We Know Overall Notes: Call me basic, call me a noob, call me uncultured. I simply prefer my indie rock when it isn't trying to overwhelm me with noise.
basic basic rock
Bug...I'll just say I'd rather watch Bug in Uncle Buck than this album. Maybe it is because it's an older album of theirs but I was not a fan. I could barely hear what they were saying over the music and most of that music was very one note. Especially for a band named after one of my favorite things, I was bummed. And the album cover is a bug so at least they are consistent.
I'm not a fan. It's noisy punky rock with some nice sounds here and there, but not something I ever want to listen to again
A bit too screamy for me, I think i listened to it in the wrong context
Old-School Rock, maybe a bit too noisy.
this was not it for me. close to giving it a 1. hated the singing.
Eh, nothing too special.
describing it as noise rock is most fitting, as vocals and melody are under constant distortion noise, i guess its a style that can work, but not for me
Alternativ 80’er indie rock, noise, folk-vibes, elguitar
“Don’t” has to be one of the worst music listening experiences of my life man. Absolutely trash. Album actually starts off pretty strong, but it takes a very quick nose dive. The production is absolutely atrocious There is way too much treble, and whoever micd those high hats needs to be hung.
Listening to this was an absolute chore. I was thinking "Okay, so in some studio years and years ago, somebody must have said 'OK, this is the one, we'll use this vocal take' to each and every vocal we can still hear on this album. When really each and every vocal should have been redone, ideally by a different singer. Mark E Smith for all that I care." So I checked out who produced this album, because I wanted to know who that person okaying all these vocal takes was. Lo and behold. It was the singer himself.
this is basically the predecessor to modern midwest emo, the way I see it. honestly i'd rather just listen to todays midwest. it has that intentionally sloppy sound and its just meh. don't is a pretty sick track tho. 2/10
Unpleasant
basic boring
Speed listening 20 seconds per track was all I could handle - Album is mostly just noise
There is no possible reason to have an album that sounds this bad on the list. It's like at every possible decision, they chose the one that made the worse music.
Started meh and just got worse until I turned it off. My first non-finish in my 1001 albums journey. I decided I don't have to listen to everything.
OH COISA RUIM BARULHENTA
- I didn't really like this. - The sound quality is overbearing because it feels like a fuzzy block of sound.. - There's some good guitar work, throughout. - I dislike the vocals, too... I find them whiny, and they're out of tune. I just can't connect and feel charisma. - The album wasn't too long, but it still felt long to me. - I think it's probably a 1.5, and I did like it better than the Sebadoh album on this list. But, I'm rounding down because I'll never listen to this again, and I actively didn't like it a lot of the time. Also, I've seen them live and remember just feeling underwhelmed. This is leaving me with the same feeling.
Ugh 🪲
awful
Was not a fan! Never heard of them before and likely won’t recall this.
Man, I think I really just hate indie music.
Too much of this album is so bad that the rest doesn't matter. 1 star or F.
Soundimaailma särkee korvia, piti kahdeksannen biisin kohdalla jättää levy kesken.
There is some good guitar here, but some parts of this album genuinely hurt to listen to.
Lärmschrott.
I was feeling pretty meh about this one, and then right at the end it starts screaming at me, and I just wasn't in the mood.
Like a much worse Home or Hudson Bell. Equally sloppy and a little lo-fi. Underdeveloped, even undeveloped. I found this really hard to listen to, surprisingly so, considering that it's just noise rock and just a bit more than white noise.
Nö, das ist einfach nur Getöse!
Nope. Lead singer ... is just off. I couldn't / wouldn't listen to the whole thing.
It's not really my style of music. That being said, it started out ok, the first couple of tracks were decent. It then continued to get progressively worse, until by track 9 I couldn't take it any longer and had to turn it off. I was so close to hearing the full album and awarding 2 stars under my own self-imposed grading system - but fuck that, it's 1 star only and that feels about right!
I don’t like it
An album drier than a cream cracker. Instrumentally sound but in terms of vocals not impressed at all. Almost had to force myself to listen to all 5 mins and 41sec of Don’t.
Ass. ‘Don’t’ was genuinely painful to listen to. Never again
First Dud - which does Bug me a little. Would rather wipe my arse with sandpaper than listen to the album in its entirety.
dont know it
When I listen to albums like Bug, I think of that time the US Army played Van Halen's 'Panama' on repeat to help drive Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega to surrender... that operation took a week to force him out of the embassy he was sheltered in. The Army could've played this album once and he would've surrendered in the middle of the sonic assault known as "Don't"... Would I listen to again? Only if held hostage...
How to make cleaning my oven even worse: put on this album. I wasn't a fan of this one. Too noisy and abrasive for me. 2.5/10.
Barrage of atonal punk-ish indie music of the late 80s. Not really my scene.
Too grungey and bad singer. I didn’t mind the first and last songs but everything inbetween wasn’t for me.
Best track "Don't". Because its the last track. Worst track "Don't'. Because they did.
Load of shit made even worse by the vocalist's fucking god awful voice. Quite possibly the worst I've ever heard. I liked distorted guitars and bass, but noise rock has hardly ever done it for me for some reason.
On a scale of 1 to 5 I'll give it -1.
Sounds like a stroppy teenager, moaning through a hose pipe
Dette var ikke mye pent. Kanskje vurdere et annet yrke enn vokalist???
Terrible
Whiny noise.
This is one of those albums that could've been good but gets ruined by completely awful, unlistenable vocals.
oh god it's indie rock. It's discordant and the singer sounds somewhere between bored and whiny. I owe the 90s an apology for thinking they invented that. I've been defaulting to "3" for things where I realize that the album just isn't my genre but it's probably important or influential. (And many albums outside my usual tastes have surprised me into higher ratings.) This one...is just so unlistenable that it's trending down towards a 2. Pray it descends no further. "Pond Song" was almost OK, even if it did raise the question "Why would anyone listen to this when there's REM?". But the next song started so loud that I literally said "oh god" out loud. All right, this album now marks the first time in 17 albums that I've stopped listening. I made it through the entirety of the "homicidal alien doctor raps about sexual assault" album, and I was one minute into the final five-minute song on this one when I said "No. No more. Make it stop." And now I know what a 1-star album is.
I’ve tried multiple times to get into Dinosaur Jr and I just can’t. The guitar tones and production just don’t do it for me. I respect their pioneering and influence they’ve had on other artists and on paper I should love them. But I don’t. Meh
Hated this. Out of tune vocals. Loud, aggressive, abrasive.
why is there so much punk crap in this list ?
make it stop
Grunge boredom.
This was generally just noise tbh. Don’t physically hurt my ears.
I don't get it. The compilers have recommended an album full of terrible off key singing. Even irony needs a certain amount of listenabilty. Or am I missing something?
Not a fan I did not like vocals
Gave me a headache.
Horrid.
Fuck rating albums. Just let me listen.
Terrible, awful, no good, BLECH - if I could give negative stars, I would.
Tout les cd rock se ressemblent
I was so glad when this was over. Not subtle or interesting.
Fav: Meh...Freak Scene Notes: Nah, at least it's relatively short. "Don't" kicks it down to a 1 star
Dinosaur Jr.'s third album has everything: distorted guitar chords strung together with no real direction, flat vocals, lackadaisical melodies, barely understandable lyrics, nothing resembling an actual riff or a hook... Frontman J Mascis is in the producer's chair for this album but somehow manages to oversee an absolutely *terrible* mix in which the submerged vocals sound completely disconnected from the instruments. (This album *might* would have benefitted from an outside producer who *possibly* could have been able to sort out this record and deliver a decent mix but we'll never know.)
I like sloppy punk rock when it’s intentional, but this was just plain off pitch. Again, noise rock… I found myself asking: “why?!”
I normally have a soft spot for late 80’s/early 90’s alt rock, but I really struggled with this record. I don’t believe I’ve ever listened to Dinosaur Jr. before, and in retrospect it seems that was a wise decision on my part. I found this album just sort of generally annoying, there wasn’t any enjoyment for me, it’s like a generic and boring version of nirvana. Not a record or band I ever plan on listening to again. 1*
Very whiny and annoying. I understand now why every whiny and annoying guy-flails-on-guitar (heavier) band seems to credit Dinosaur Jr as an influence. Monotonous and unrelenting nasal bleating from the vocalist over uninteresting, fuzzed out guitars. I think this album is called “Bug” because it will bug you if you’re looking for music with any amount of thought behind it.
Really did not like this album at all. Felt like a Green Day imitation that just kind of felt flat and uninspired, to say nothing of the frankly awful vocals. Maybe some interesting fleeting moments, but not much else going on that's noteworthy.
No.
The first song was going ok until the screechy guitar solo hit and I had to turn the volume way down. The guitar tone was a constant issue with the fast strumming, slow chord changes and lethargic vocals combining in a way that I really don't like. And the last two tracks legitimately gave me a headache with the loud and constant feedback noise.
Cut #1 is a great way to open an album - loud, noisy, and fuzzy instruments with a calm, almost disinterested vocal. The fact that they served as an influence for BUFFALO TOM gives them points, but, as much as I generally like this style of music, I just can't love this particular album. Didn't click "Like" for any of the cuts. As the album nears it's inevitable conclusion, I'm realizing that the boring quotient of each tune has exceeded that of the one before. When it opened with FREAK SCENE, I was thinking it a surprise 5-star, but, as DON'T starts up....what a bullshit song. Dragging it out to 5:41 is insulting my ears. Maybe they were influenced by GG ALLIN? ⭐ ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 73 🎧 LPs left to review: 928 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 17 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 18 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 20

I’m so bored of mediocre rock albums that are a part of this just because it was part of a sub-genre that was popular for half a year in the eighties.
Not big on it. Kinda monotonous
I already know that this is not for me.
I know Dinosaur Jr. are held in high regard in the alternative and grunge scenes. I've never actually listened to them before. And I didn't miss anything. I dont know what the big deal is. Noisy distorted fuzzy guitars and droney vocals. And I can get past that and even into it if there are some great songs behind it. But as much as I tried I could not find one song that I could get into, or even half get into. I didn't want to give this a 1 but I just can't give it a 2. I disliked it that much.
The songs are too loud. I feel like the instruments overpower the vocals.
Bad
It would be a lie to say I'm a fan. To me, every Dinosaur Jr. song sounds the same, with Feel the Pain being the exception. Even the highly regarded "Freak Scene" sounds like the same song again. I've actually seen them live and I could not tell you when a song ended and the other started. They played 18 SONGS that felt like 4. This album was sort of like that concert. Boringly listening to every song, waiting for the album to end so I can go and listen to better things. I always try to be objective, since every piece of music is way more complex than just "it's good" or "it's bad", but there are times where the album makes me don't even care about objectiveness anymore. Like Supa Dupa Fly, or the other ones I haven given 2/5's. Does it have a place in music history? I guess, but I'm not interested enough in the band to go into that deep dive. I was going to give it a 2, but "Don't" fucked things up and turned into a straight 1. I don't care. 1/5. And that's a lot.
Nothing but noise. Every single song incomprehensible. Was hard to pick a best song because I can't understand a word they say. Best song: Freak Scene
I enjoyed the guitar at parts , the sound is rough but it grew on me … the guitar solos stand out here and there but overall its not an easy listen… I suspect I’ll appreciate having heard this in my music journey though
Nah
This is not what I call music.
Vocal is terrible. Sounds flat. Songs are like a constant run on sentence. Glad when I finished listening to this album! “Don’t”. …. Seriously, is this music or just a lot of screaming. Sounds like a child having a temper tantrum or an adult with serious mental issues.
No
Påfrestande att lyssna på. Det är ju bara skrän.

p597. 1988. 1 star. Noisy, repetitive and redundant late 80s US indie rock. Each trac sounds the same, and the vocalist has an annoying nasal whine. Not much to like here.
Maybe it's a time capsule. Hasn't aged well. Best listened to in 1988. Much better albums that encompass the time period and sound.
Oudohko kokonaisuus. Välillä kevyttä poprokkia, välillä järjetöntä mölyä. Ei jatkoon
# 252 : I knew I wasn't going to like this… nothing good about this, not even slightly. have the people that rate something 5 stars actually listened/read/watched what they are rating?
brother can shred a guitar but can't sing worth a lick
WTF is Don't and Keep the Glove? Wow, those ruins an okay, but passable album.
It's way too noisy. It sounds like a bad bad high school band practicing
Terrible noisy shit and the singer is way out of tune.
Two songs into this album and there is no compelling reason to justify why it is on the list of 1001 albums one must listen to before they die. They sound like an average band at best; nothing new or ambitious musically or lyrically. Sorry, I really do try to be generous and open-minded but guitar distortion is something that has a place but should not be the only sound...
Some background music is pleasant and enjoyable as you listen. This is not. I am just waiting for it to be over. NO. F
Strange. Mediocre. Grim. Goth. Unenjoyable.
Not for me.
I have heard of Dinosaur JR but have never listened to them before. When this came up I was excited and not sure what I was going to get. I was expecting a Feeder, Green Day and Ash vibe. Thats exactly what I got and its not my bag at all. I found this a noisy and sloppy album. Favourite song: couldnt find one I liked Least favourite song: All of them Album artwork: Meh
Don’t know how this made the list. Can hear no talent at all and the singer’s voice really grates after a while. Needs to get to the chemist and buy a decongestant. Hopefully it sounds better nowerdays with auto-tune. Have heard better at my local open mic nights. 0.25/5 23/3/24
I was trying to find a good album out of this, but it was drowned out by just the most awful whiny vocals. "Don't" is one of the worst songs I've heard in my life.
Annoying is being nice.
Messy distorted noise.
The WiFi connection from my computer to the stereo kept dropping, and we dutifully reconnected it each time. Shouldn’t have bothered.
If not for one track (Pond Song) almost accidentally veering toward actual music this album would be complete shit. If a negative score were possible it would get minus one stars.
Rough listen. First track is decent but quickly gets worse. Wall of sound. Heavy sustained guitars, proto grunge-ish. Seemingly intentionally alt-rock singing where there's no appreciable melody to the singing. One and done for me
repetitive, unrefined, chaotic
This album makes me sigh. As a heavy metal fan I find myself unable to get into this kind of rock music. It's not metal, it's not punk, what is it? "Hard rock"? "Grunge"? "Alternative" (to what)? I feel like maybe I just missed the memo on this style or rock music. To me the noisy instruments' energy clashes with the vocals. My ears just find this mismatched, if that makes sense. So yeah, this one's a thumbs down for me. It can bug off!
Annoying! Shut up! Shut up for one hundred years!
ooof, this wasnt for me
Okay so, this was one of if not the worst things i’ve heard in my life. “Don’t”. don’t even get me started. that took years off my life. I believe an accurate comparison to this is nails on a chalkboard but nails that are so disgustingly long that they keep chopping off. God this was horrible.
The album started with a couple of songs that I didn't like but was ready to lean into the good elements and hoped that it would improve as the album went on. However, that was not to pass, instead, it devolved into incoherent screaming by the end, I did not like this album.
Awful
meh
The musicians on this album play well. The singer can suck a bag of dicks.
I really didn’t understand why this album was on here. I had never heard of this band before and I think it’s because they don’t offer anything new. The mixing on this album is terrible, I hear the singer and then distorted noise. I had to look up this band to see what I was missing, and apparently it said that they are responsible for “bringing back lead guitar.” Which is crazy because this album lacked instrumental separation and I couldn’t hear any sort of leading instrument. This album had nothing new to offer and not a single song that stood out.
Was okay
Straight sucks 1
Wrote something that wasn't saved, basically saying this was meh.
Noise is just not my thing, sorry, not sorry.
Sounded alright for an early alternative rock/grunge album, but I didn’t bother to make it through
Still not my cup of tea
So noisy for the sake of being noisy. The singer's voice is a bit grating
Ouach j’haïs ça
This was worse than that Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album, and that’s saying something. That album was so bad that it was comical, this one was just plain bad. I can’t believe multiple so-called music editors agreed this is a “must hear” album. Has anyone checked their hearing?
Appalling dirge.
And yet another grunty American garage band who smash the cymbals and a couple of power chord strikes of the axe... and its all blah blah blah shite, the same as the rest of the 15yr olds in mom's garage. Really can't stand this dung.
Why do bands that can play insist on using people who can't sing. The music is OK, not great, but tolerable post punk/alternative rock. The singing is dreadful. Change the vocalist and maybe it gets 3 stars. As it is it gets 1
i found little remarkable about this album. i do believe it was early on the alternative scene, so its inclusion is notable. but nothing stands out to me. well that’s not necessarily the whole truth. “don’t” stood out because it’s one of the worst songs i have ever heard. screaming nonsense that hurt my ears and i have no remorse for my rating.
Some of the albums on this list make me wonder if the author of the list has functioning ear holes. Track #9 was the worst screamo bullshit I’ve ever heard. Why don’t you like me? Why? Screamed over and over again at the listener for 5:32 I think the listener should be asking Dinosaur Jr that exact question. Fuck this album, it was mediocre at best, until track #9 set the whole dumpster on fire. I wish I could give less than 1 star.
1001 albums I "must" hear? Fuck me, what is this shit? Why "must" I hear this? Is it historical? Is it significant? Was it groundbreaking?
Big drones. Boring shit. Hated this
Tough to get through. Not terrible. Just not for me.
Ugh, is this out of time and out of tune? Horrible noise.
Didn't like this one, very noisy and not for me rn. The vocalist is not really doing it for me musically.
Terrible
tinny gritty thrashy droning repetitious. the worst songs of a Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack
“A retrograde stylistic shift in the American underground.”
Bara nei. Upphafslagið sleppur en annars hef ég engan smekk fyrir svona proto-grungi. Leiðinlegur stanslaus distortion gítar í bakgrunni, lög sem renna flest saman í eitt, nema lagið Don't sem er botninn. Ég mun ekki hlusta aftur.
trash
Didn’t like
Not worth listening to
couldn't finish. A lot of noise, not much music
alt rock, meh
