Bug

I've heard of this band, and I know I've at least seen J Mascis in Portlandia, but never listened to them. Right away, I'm digging this. Kind of a noisy, garage-rock style but with good melody. The promise of the first two tracks fades a little, as the album begins to sound redundant, and then it finishes with a couple very abrasive noise rock tunes that I enjoyed more than I thought I would (but still not very much). This was a decent album. I won't return to much, but I respect it for sounding about 5-10 years ahead of its time. Favorite tracks: Freak Scene, No Bones, Pond Song. Album art: I like this one. Somewhat inscrutable. At first I thought I was looking at some deformed Ratatouille freak, but then I finally saw the bug. This is cool though, like the whole thing was finger-drawn in mud. 3/5

No tenía conocimiento ni del nombre Dinosaur Jr. Un rock alternativo bonito, ruidosito, a gusto, 10 canciones en 38 minutos. Las canciones cuidadas, el bajo fuerte fuerte sonando bien. Si hubiera escuchado el disco en blanco y sin conocimiento hubiera firmado que era Sonic Youth pero con otra voz. No diría que fue espectacular, quizá pesa un poco que haya tocado tan pegado a algo similar como los Pixies, pero si fue bastante agradable. No se si lo pondría en rotación pero es como para si haces una playlist de alternativo/grunge meter algunas canciones. Cumple y suena bien a pesar de no resaltar muy por encima de las bandas similares.

Musicalmente se me hicieron muy, muy buenos. Se escucha una batería de happy punk por aquí, unos guitarrazos muy grunge por acá. Musicalmente en serio me parecen una delicia. Las letras embrolladas no estorban. La métrica de la lírica me parece muy cuestionable pero al combinarla con la voz, no sé si fea por naturaleza o producida así para que suene mal, generan una combinación terrible. No me gusta el chillido desafinado que pasa en este disco por voz sobre una ejecución musical tan buena. Si no tuviera voz, le ponía 4 estrellas al disco y por culpa de cómo las partes cantadas me perforan el oído, se queda con 3 estrellas. Los gritos y atasque de Don't me parecen mucho más agradables que su manera de cantar. Me duele poner esta calificación pero no pude con la voz. Songs: Yeah We Know, Budge, Don't, Keep The Glove

Pra mim todo rock era pra ser de certa forma "Noise", mas essa banda me apresenta esse subtipo de rock que eu até então não conhecia. "Don't" faz jus ao tipo de rock.

“Don’t” really caught me off guard. I didn’t know Dino Jr was like that. I really didn’t like this album. It felt unrefined. Kinda like making a song and doing no revisions and being like “yeah that’s good”.

Some good guitar every now and then but not very good everything else.

I preferred this Dinosaur Jr album to the other I’ve had on here. Initially I thought this one wasn’t that good either, but as it played it grew on me more than the other album. The production lets things down severely, and it became samey after five or six songs. I erred on a 3, but I’m going with a 2. I still don’t understand why they are so lauded.

Hard rock. But more interesting/creative than i expected. The vocalist is not great. Though I appreciate the effort here, I can’t imagine wanting to listen to the whole album again. A 2.

This was ehhhhh. First song was solid. Rest was mostly forgettable. Just a bunch of guitars making background noise and a bunch of stuff that blended together and OH GOD WHAT WAS THAT LAST SONG. Well it was gonna be a 3. But Don’t made it a 2.

I want to like them - I’ve tried several times including before seeing them live once with Weezer, but just can’t get there.

Ok, competent guitar band earns a 3, lack of attitude and average vocal knocks it down to 1.5, so a 2

Sound and musicianship isn't very good. This is the sound of teenage angst and probably irrelevant for anyone beyond that age or who wasn't a teenager when Dinosaur Jr hit the scene. Noisy rock not far from contemporaries My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth, but perhaps a bit more melodic. 2/5.

I wasn't exactly into it, but wasn't exactly hating it either. I was going with a solid 3 until "Don't" came on. Jebus tits. Sounded like horses in a barn fire. Kinda ruined the entire experience.

Do this band know what they are? Jingle-y guitar, metal guitar, bit of everything.

This almost sounds like 90’s music in spaces so props to hem for being cutting edge. That said, I didn’t find it that enjoyable. I did like the next couple random tracks Spotify rolled into when the album was over.

Some good parts but a lot of this is just tough to listen to. I was on the fence and then Don’t came on….ouch…I’m sure there are some art reasons but the guitars and the yelling just doesn’t work for me. I feel like an old man but this is just too much. And it goes on for like 5 minutes! And then the next song is a nice acoustic melody like nothing happened! Come on man. 2.25

This is acidly 2/3 but the track, Don’t, sealed it at a 2. I mean, keep that shit to no more than one minute. 5 mins is just mean! 2.5/5

Not bad but unmemorable

Found this is a bit of a dirgy slog lacking any moments of joy. I have never really got Dinsosaur Jr - bought one of their albums at the height of grunge but ended up swapping it.

I get the Neil Young comparisons in vocals. But this just sounds like crappy American college rock. It's not fun, its not teenage angst, its just lo-fi, noisy meh. Yeah We Know is the only decent tune.

This album is much like others of its type, just was nothing special for me.

I agree with J Mascis that Bug is not one of Dinosaur Jr's best albums. I prefer You are Living All Over Me, as Bug seems more like noise-rock than their prior album. I do not know why this book put two Dinosaur Jr albums in this book and just happened to have them go back-to-back like this. I think Where You Been or Without a Sound would have been the second Dinosaur Jr album in this book instead. I did not enjoy this one particularly. It wasn't bad, but I found it's inclusion to be unnecessary in some ways. We heard their prior (superior) album, so why does Bug need to be in here as well? I could have died without hearing this specific Dinosaur Jr album and wish if there was an insistence to place two albums in this book it would have been one from the 90's. My favorite tracks: Freak Scene No Bones Let it Ride Budge

Don’t was the only track that stands out. Not because it’s so different from the rest of the album but because it was actually a good song. Everything else was boring and generic.

This was a pretty boring experience. A wall of fuzz does not an album make! Vocals felt like a parody of Sonic Youth. Another band that is better at making songs for mixtapes that for albums.

I saw them play in a small space in 92 or 93. (I think I owe some of my tinnitus to that show.) Back then, as now, my reaction was, “this is mildly interesting but I want it to stop.” This period of all solid state processing and amplification produced objectively shitty guitar sounds. The timid vocal warbling is irritating. And Sonic Youth did the wall-of-cacophony with SO much more musical substance. There are brief moments when this music is engaging; but too few of them. It just never amounts to something I want to listen to more of. And on that note - I'll allow that Dinosaur Jr. was interesting and beloved enough to warrant a place on the list. But, including two of their albums is preposterous; particularly in light of the amazing acts who aren’t represented at all.

Genre = Noise Rock That about sums it up. Two of the tracks (Let it ride/Don’t) were so unlistenable I had to skip them. The kind of American indie that bores me to death. Unimaginative, and very repetitive. It’s a hard pass for me.

Definitely not as good as Living All Over Me, there's still the alt rock 90s rawness, but it just washed over me this time and the out of tune lyrics eventually got annoying. Maybe a 2.5?

Exhibit no. 347,012,966: why bad vocals can bring down an album. The instrumentation is seriously on point here... except for the singing. It's untrained, quavery, generally out-of-tune. The guy also sounds wholly unconvinced of what he's singing. Not exactly qualities you want for your frontman. Do better, J Mascis. Additionally, a lot of these songs sound extremely similar. Typically it's bands like Dinosaur Jr. that require a couple of front-to-back listens before you can recall (and anticipate) the hooks, and enjoy the album more as a result. But on a first listen? The tracks seem pretty indistinguishable. Except the song Don't. Which is noticeably worse than the rest. Freak Scene is a pretty solid opener. Great roaring energy, a nice punk-esque lead guitar tone, good jelling between bass and rhythm guitar, and a marketably positive atmosphere. Can't really go wrong there. Obviously the singing is bad (as per above), but fortunately the guy's not singing for much of the song's runtime. No Bones can be described in much the same way. A seriously driving energy that doesn't let up at all. Which, realistically, might be considered part of its downfall. In fact, I found myself searching for moments of silence, and the song Yeah We Know said "Yeah, we know", pausing somewhat on the relentless uptempo onslaught. I consider Budge a key track because it avoids the "bad singing" pitfall by adding another vocal line, an octave apart from the first. Octave harmonies are hit-or-miss, and I'm not exactly convinced here, but it's so much better than just the solo vocalist that I'm (comparatively) having a blast. This would almost be a 3-star record. Almost. But then Don't comes barging in, like a knock-off Endless, Nameless, destroying your eardrums and several of the nearest windows in the process. Stupid faux-death metal is stupid. What the heck is happening here? These albums are meant to be enjoyable, my guy. 2/5 Key tracks: Freak Scene, No Bones, Budge

Oh, they sound just like Ash. Not sure if that's a compliment yet, I liked Ash back in the day but I find them a bit whiny now. I didn't dig this. Too noisy for my taste.

Honestly, given my enjoyment of raucous bands, and general appreciation of noise and chaos, I expected to like this more.

Sounds like they're trying to do the Sonic Youth/Pavement thing where they're trying to make their music sound like shit on purpose but J Mascis is too good of a guitar player to keep up the facade for too long. More frustrating than anything.

This is kind of a weird one. The front half of the album is all guitar and vocals. The bass finally emerges out of the wall of fuzz on track seven, but it's too little too late. (Perhaps Lou Barlow was better off getting fired?). Then they really lost me on the final track, which is very screamy. And coming in at almost six minutes— well, that is 15% of the album right there, out the window.

I was looking forward to this one because I like some other Dinosaur Jr. songs, but this just did not land for me. Too much of just noise; not enough distinct instruments for my taste.

When it comes through it sounds good and there are good instrumental parts here, but it isn't great. Not a whole lot going on here with this LP and group. Mostly noise. Although the lead singer has a nice soothing voice.

It started out ok, but it got really loud at the end. I didn’t like that. This is the second album I’ve had by this band and I don’t hate either of them. The other album was better though.

Half the album sounds like it accidentally time-traveled from 1993 and landed in 1988 wearing ripped jeans and emotional baggage. Then J Mascis starts shrieking like someone stepped on his favorite fuzz pedal, and the mood gets too complicated for me.

Bug by Dinosaur Jr. is a mixed bag that leans heavily on its signature distorted guitar sound and the laid-back vocal style, but doesn’t fully capitalize on its strengths. While there are flashes of energy and melodic hooks, much of the record feels repetitive and lacks standout moments. The production and songwriting don’t evolve enough across the tracklist, which makes the album blur together over time. It’s not without charm, especially if you already like their sound, but overall it comes off as fairly average and somewhat forgettable. 5/10

Having lots of loud guitar riffs doesn't make something good. There are decent moments, but the end of the album really buries everything decent about it.

both the album title and artist's name makes me biased to give this a high rating. However, when listening through the album, I didn't enjoy it very much. It's a good indie rock album, with some good drum beats, but overall didn't find it very special. The lyrics are a little hard to decipher, so maybe they hold more value that I'm not attributing to this album. I consider it good background music, it holds that tricky balance of being interesting enough to not put me to sleep, bug generic enough to not take over all my attention. Maybe listening to it without doing anything else would affect my review, but I really don't have the time, and this is personal review so it's solely based on my opinion, so if you disagree, then you disagree and I'm not arguing about this.

A light 6/10. I like the energy—the guitars and drums hit hard, and I’m into that old-school punk feel… but I just didn’t connect with this one.

This is one of those in-between albums. It didn't quite fit in with college radio staples, hair metal, or progressive/new wave of the 80's. But it was also pre-grunge. Hard to see where these guys fit in. The singer was a little too Violent Femmes for my liking. The songwriting wasn't that creative and I lost interest after about two songs.

It was pretty run of the mill rock, until the wall of screaming metal in “Don’t”. Screaming is a personal turnoff for me. ( hence the one star Sepultura album rating). Then they follow that with a pop-ish song, almost in apology. Or in pandering… suffice it to say the last two songs felt like a departure from the rest in a very calculated let’s try to expand our marketing kind of way. Knocks it from a three to a 2.5 for me.

I wasn’t sure what to do with this record. The songs all melt together into a mess of distorted guitars, and they all sounded the same. I was relieved when the album was over.

Well. That was...something! (And not something good!) Was this recorded in an underwater basement studio? The quality is so poor, I think it was. I'm taking a cue from the band and their song "Don't" which should've served as my warning; the first lyric is a strangled, yelled "WHYYYYYYY?" Exactly. Questioning "WHYYYYYYY?" this album made the list in the first place.

Not the worst, but nowhere near the best. I was happy when the last song finished.

Doesn't really grab me, but not terrible

Wasn’t vibing with this album but started to with their album you’re living all over me.

This sounded like an album that I'd like, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it (Monday morning, tired...). It just sounded so muddy to me.

Again, pretty much instantly forgettable. Some of it’s cool, some of it’s too like ‘sludgy’ for me, I don’t know. First half better than the second. (2.5 stars)

Dinosaur Jr. – Bug (1988) On Day 88, I found Bug to be another example of the production trying to carry the whole show. While "Freak Scene" started off promising and gave me a taste of their melodic grunge style, the experience got worse as I moved deeper into the tracklist. The vocals were consistently off and lacked the energy needed to match the "loud as hell" guitar work. While the musicianship is clearly there, the vocal performance felt lazy and detached, making the project feel pretty passable rather than a true body of work. It’s not the worst thing I’ve heard, but it’s a mid-level listen that earns a 2/5 primarily because the production kept it from falling apart although most of it was noise.

The drums and guitar have a pretty good energy, but the vocal really turns me off from this album. It honestly sounds like he doesn't care at all and couldn't be bothered to put in any effort. He sounds bored and tired, and that makes me bored of listening. The only track where he's really invested is 'Don't' which is kinda cool. Unfortunately the guitar on that track ends up a bit grating to my ears after a little bit Standouts Don't 2/5

Well, 9/10 of these songs was just silly indie music that should be in the background of some teen film or Gavin and Stacey. Nice guitars I guess. However the song called "Don't" was fab, just screaming over and over again. Not enough to raise it into a pass I'm afraid x

This week I’vebeen haunted by bands my 20’s self tried to endure/ discover. I’m at the end of the tether, let’s give this album a try. Nope, still not a Dinosaur Jr fan. Unsure why I love Sonic Youth but the buzzy guitars of DJ don’t do it for me.

One song played slightly differently with different lyrics stretched out to 9 songs. 'Don't' was the exception and although pretty basic on all fronts, it landed...but not as heavily as the others bombed.

To me, this album sounded like something between punk rock and Shoegaze, not as drone as something like my bloody valentine, but it still has that quality of the vocals sneaking through a wall of guitar distortion. The last track was an unexpected change of pace, it sounded more heartfelt like a Beatles song, so I appreciated the versatility. Overall, this was decent 5/10

Not really my cup of tea. Track 9, in particular: who needs that? (lol) So, between a 2 and a 3 for me, and I guess I lean slightly toward 2. (As an aside, I like band member Lou Barlow's spin-off band, Sebadoh, somewhat better.) Trying to think of something else to say about this one. Was kind of a fresh sound, I guess, at the time. If they'd had a better Track 9, might have been a 3, but, as is, I'm sticking with a 2.

Track #9 "Don't" was my favorite for leaning into the mess, and the transition to Track #10 is a funny contrast. While I appreciate some of the guitar work, and I imagine it was pretty cool in '88, once you've heard a few high school bands it's hard to be impressed by this sound. There isn't enough contrast. My ears get lost in the wash of guitar distortion

Hit me like discount Green Day. And then discount Incubus. Or discount Nirvana. It might have preceded all of those. But a lesser iteration, in my opinion. Didn't like the screamo track.

Not sure why this is on the list, there's not much to it though it does feel like a precursor to emo rock (I never had an emo phase). The compositions are fine but nothing stand out here. Also seems like at the end they remembered they were meant to be a screamo band.

I do like a bit of grunge, and I also like Dinosaur Jr. maybe I just wasn’t into it today but nothing really stuck out for me. The Dynamics are really flat. They got better after this album in my opinion.

I'm from a time a place where I'm supposed to like Dinosaur Jr. But I don't really.

2.5/5. Didn’t do a lot for me especially when thinking of other Dinosaur Jr. albums such as “you’re living all over me.” Which is a shame because I typically quite like late 80’s/early 90’s indie rock.

#245/1001. A band that is angrier than Nirvana for one song and less angry in 9 songs.

I liked Freak Scene and Pond Song, but the rest of the album I found either just okay or annoying, with Don't being physically painful to listen to.

I thought this was just fine, a bit generic, but by no means terrible. But then Don't came on and I really struggled with making it through that song.

It’s a very generic, noisy indie rock album. I feel like I've already heard it 10 times during this challenge because it lacks any real uniqueness. It reminds me of 1977 by Ash. The whiniest lead singer voice I’ve encountered since being forced to listen to Simple Plan as a teenager. This album is not for me.

I want to like Dinosaur Jr but so little stands out to me. They are fine in a playlist format but listening to just this band can feel repetitive at times.

I really wish I knew why this album is so obsessed with noise rock. I'm at 491 out of 1001, and I bet we've had 50-60 noise rock albums that are just... wall of sound noise through many of their tracks. This was not fun to listen to. While maybe less true noise rock than most of the others, it still just felt like too much.

Definitely an indie/grunge album. There wasn’t much on here that I’d really like to listen to again. Just was definitely the worst offender to the ears, but the rest of average stuff. Keep The Glove I actually did like. It has this mess of noise at the end that actually worked for me. Other than that, just another album.

A few hints at proggy guitar stuff but not that great. Lead singers voice very pitchy.

Like with Sonic Youth, a lot of this is just noises. I like a lot of adjacent music to this but I’m just not into this.

I saw very little high value musical content in this. Seemed like a lot of drudgery and poor vocal delivery with occasional good instrumental patches. Too much angst for me, although would have probably been of use age 15.

The first few songs were okay, I was vibing with the singers voice and musicality, but then I got lost half way through and didn't enjoy the ending of the album. The names of the songs made me laugh though, so there is that!

The more I listened, the less I liked this

As a first-time listener, Bug felt like a raw and noisy introduction to Dinosaur Jr’s world. “Freak Scene” stood out with its catchy hooks and emotional punch, but the rest of the album didn’t quite grab me in the same way. There’s energy and attitude here, but it didn’t fully click for me overall.

I saw where this album was described as 'noise rock'. Well, they got that first half right...

Album began ok. Last two songs were just annoying noise. "Don't" was terrible noise and "Keep the Glove" became noise as well. Not very memorable, but overall listenable.

Normally dont mind this kind of thing but there's nothing about this that warrants must-listen status.

Where do I begin? This is probably the most mediocre album I've listened to so far. The songs are very repetitive. The vocalist doesn't show me that they have anything to offer that I can't find elsewhere. If I had to describe this album in 1 word, it would be "forgettable".

Oooof, started off ok, interesting early alternative sounds. Ended in a way that made me not want to put it on again. 2 stars.

Bad angst teen movie soundtrack

I rly wanted to like this but I just didn’t rly. I do appreciate the sound and some stuff like this I like a lot but it just wasn’t THAT good overall. The only problem I rly had was the vocals being annoying but ik it’s supposed to sound like that with the indie alt rock genres. A lot of the guitar riffs I did enjoy and I didn’t overly hate anything but it just was quite middle of the road. My favourite songs were No Bones and Keep The Glove but I did enjoy Don’t a lot aswell. Overall I’m not going to be returning to this at all rly so I’m gonna give it a 5.4/10 2.7/5

Aside from Freak Scene, it feels like the band are not giving it their all. 4/10

Boring punk

Started off OK - the last song - Don't - was a big no from me. What the hell was that? I'll say 2.

Decent but the last couple tracks really lost me

Not horrible but nothing that caught my attention.

Dinosaur Jr is just not for me. I have had this album (actually the tape) since probably 1994. Unlike Sonic Youth which I always avoided until this list I did try to get into this album. I know that they are important because of who they influenced and what they were doing in contrast to the state of music in 1988, but this sounds too much like all the million bands who imitated them in the 90s.

This album wasn't all that bad, really, until the final song ("Don't") which, is, uh, certainly ... noise? That's probably the most positive thing I can comment on it.

Sometimes felt like it was coming through poorly on radio. One song I was really tempted to skip, but overall I could enjoy it. Very punky, and emotional.

I actually did rather like this album, but it doesn't really feel essential. I had never heard of this group before, so maybe they are more influential than I give them credit for, but this doesn't stand apart from some of the other rock on this list.

I like distortion and guitars and I can hear the influences they made on later bands, and there were moments which were good, though I didn't particularly enjoy this album. I was leaning towards 3 stars but then came the last, very noisy song which rounds it down to a 2 overall.

I bought this album on the back of Freak Scene (remember when that was a thing? No streaming or downloads, just hope and Sounds or MM or NME or your local record shop staff to guide you). I was disappointed and I still am. Freak Scene was and is awesome though, for me it was one of the defining tracks of that part of my messy life, a staple of every half-decent indie night playlist. The rest of the album is mediocre at best.

Hard indie, huh. I reckon it must be good for those who enjoy that kind of music. However, I am not that kind of girl.

Not good, very generic

This album crawled so that other indie rock albums could walk and run. It was mostly fine, but not particularly catchy in my opinion. Which is a little surprising, because I love indie rock. I just didn't love this indie rock.

I mean... it started out pretty neutral and I was almost vibing with this until "Don't" came on. Jesus Christ what was THAT. This is just noise. Absolutely not.

I found myself asking "Wow, is this really still playing?" only to realize the album was only 38 minutes. I liked some of it, hated some of it. I definitely wouldn't listen to it as a whole album again though.

Noisey, solo-ey, but as with almost everything Dino Jr., I can’t get into them.

I kinda was digging some of this, but nearly 6 minutes of "Don't" brings it down a star.

Meh, I missed this album when it came out and I don’t find it compelling now.

Uhh… I don’t know. Feels like it had some promising moments where it felt like an early inspiration for skate punk bands like Blink 182, Sum 41 etc. But then you suddenly get songs like ’Don’t’, which is just pure garbage. In the end it wasn’t convincing enough. Going to have to settle for a 2, probably a weak one.

I just don't get Dinosaur Jr. To me it's just atonal singing which i know is kind of the point of them but still, it's just not for me. The guitar riffs are the best part, with "Yeah we know" being my favourite. Still the singing just locks it to 2 stars for me.

I had one of their albums growing up but never really listened to it that often and don't think I would listen to this one again either.

Not to my liking at all, way too screaming

Nothing really stood out to me. There were some cool parts, but also a lot of filler. There’s a few Dinosaur Jr. songs I do really like, none that really stood out on this album to me. Perhaps I should have paid attention more.

I always thought Dinosaur Jr. kinda sucked but had never really listed to them. Now I have and my opinion remains unchanged.

Even though this is grunge, before this sort of punk was even being called grunge, it is still fairly anodyne. They get an extra star for being there first, but I was bored by the whole endeavor.

Jesus Christ the vocals on this are awful.

I'm a big fan of indie and alternative but, for some reason, Dinosaur Jr. just never really kept my attention. It's fine but generally pretty generic.

Just noise to me

This was an okay album. I found the music to be noisy (in a good way) but the vocals are awful.

Has few good songs but the whole album was more an underwhelming listening experience. On to the next one, nothing hard to leave behind. (2.5/5.0)

I'll give this album two stars purely on the basis of some interesting and skillful guitar work on some of the tracks. If not for that it would be one star, especially given the descent into mindless screaming on track 9.

Albummet er en forløber for alternativ rock hvor det grænser til grunge. Det er mest af alt Noise-rock ville jeg sige, synes ikke der er mange ligheder mellem det her og de klassiske grunge bands udover stemmen, frovrænget guitar og måske teksterne? udover dette er der sådan lidt en DIY lyd som minder om noget lo-fi agtigt eller indie rock. Det er også meget melodisk til tider og det kan jeg godt lide. Jeg synes ikke umiddelbart det så meget er mig, måske er det fordi det bliver lidt for noisy og larmenede. kan godt lide den der waoow wahcky whcka wauoow guitar lyd på yeah we know. Det minder mig også en smule om Sonic Youth lyden som jeg egentlig godt kan lide.

Freak scene started ok, but by the second song I'm wondering why the dude has to sing like this? Don't was just pure noise. 2*

Starts off like Psychedelic Furs, then moves into gritty Drive By Truckers. But almost every song is ruined by an intolerable screeching (not wailing, not jamming, not even screaming) guitar and unlistenable distortion. WTF?!

I had higher hopes since I’d heard one of their songs before, but I couldn’t get into it

I didn't mind this album, till I got to "don't". It felt like a departure from the rest of the album, and a departure I didn't like one bit.

Album 699 of 1001 Dinosaur Jr. - Bug (1988) Rating : 2.5 / 5 I came across another album from this band that I liked a lot. Thought the vocalist had a unique voice. This album is pretty much the opposite. This is their 3rd album. They lost something somewhere. It really falls apart at the end.

Ironically, I took a skim through the reviews on here prior to listening and the amount of people who complained about the noise got my hopes up. In reality, with the exception of ‘Don’t’, the only real standout track for me, it remains quite pop oriented and lacks memorability. Bug isn’t offensively bland enough to be too low; however, with the exception of Don’t, not remarkable enough to be anything quite great. Would sit at a 2.5 if I was able to assign decimals.

4/10 - most of the songs were fine but the second to last song was all yelling and I did not enjoy it

Generic, grungy, guitar music. Every song sounds the same. Probably amazing if you grew up listening to it but sadly not for me. Favourite Tracks: Don't Won't be revisiting. 2/5

Started well but nah, not for me

Album started off fine enough but then the second song came on and I wanted to jump out the window. This trend unfortunately continued. Really awful whiney vocals, like your drunk friend at karaoke. This is garbage but at least it's short. 3.25/10 (1.625/5)

This started ok, but progressively got worse as it went. By the end it was just an annoying noise in my ears and I wanted to be over.

Dull

This album reminded me of a lot of sexual encounters I've had with my wife. In this case, I'm the band, and I'm SO stoked. I have so many cool tricks up my sleeve to impress her. I'm gonna show off the pedalboard and be like, "Check out this crazy tone!" She, on the other hand, is me, the listener; mostly just waiting for it to be over; nodding her head and going, "Yeah, that's really great." If you ever have to scream at someone, "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME?!" I think you kind of have your answer, don't you?

I feel the pain of everyone struggling to get through this album’s muddled malaise, then I feel nothing.

I’ll confidently say I didn’t listen thoroughly. I played this while gaming, while working, and while being a sloot and I never found peace with the noise. I became a boomer listening to this. Back in my day, we broke shit and smashed the system, man. Says the generation that caused the mess we’re in. 2/5, I didn’t hate it just didn’t like it.

Cool guitar but too noisy for me

Listening to this straight after the Pixies just illustrates my point about how joyous Doolittle is. By comparison this is a bit of a dirgy slog lacking any moments of joy.

I didn't like this

While I usually like this kind of music this artist or at least this album didn't resonate with me at all. I can't put my finger on exactly why but I didn't enjoyed my listen through.

Somehow this album felt really long, even though it was a relatively short one and it just kept on going and going (unless I maybe looped it but I didn't realise when the songs changed as they all sounded very similar). The whole album had a little bit of a generic 90s feeling and given that it came out in 1988, it was probably slightly ahead of its time. Nothing too exciting, I guess it was also for a background listen, but pretty meh nowadays. The song "Don't" though, which is second to last in the album... crazily bad, actually just screaming into the microphone, and although the instrumentals were alright, it's like getting a free ice cream after someone beats the shizzle out of you. That dropped my rating significantly because it wasn't a normal length but 5 minutes and 41 seconds. Yes, I could have skipped it but what kind of a reviewer would I be...

Having trouble giving this anything more than 2 stars. Some pieces I liked, but far more pieces I viscerally disliked. Is Dinosaur Jr versatile or unfocused? Fearless or oblivious? Who's to say. I'm not sure I know anyone who would like every genre they're doing on this album. It's so punk rock to have lead vocalists with fucking terrible voices. Kinda a flex. Doesn't make me like it though. 'No Bones' is a good example. I can't imagine having the gall to be a lead vocalist if my voice sounded like this Having said that, I enjoyed the instrumentals on a few songs. They Always Come was fun and had some nice rawk elements going on. Having now said something nice, I really hated "Don't". Who honestly likes screamo
