Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Not a whole lot going on here with this LP and group. Mostly noise. Although the lead singer has a nice soothing voice.
It started out ok, but it got really loud at the end. I didn’t like that. This is the second album I’ve had by this band and I don’t hate either of them. The other album was better though.
Half the album sounds like it accidentally time-traveled from 1993 and landed in 1988 wearing ripped jeans and emotional baggage. Then J Mascis starts shrieking like someone stepped on his favorite fuzz pedal, and the mood gets too complicated for me.
Such an overrated band
This was fine.
War schlecht
It's ok. I just don't really get it though. What is it?
Bug by Dinosaur Jr. is a mixed bag that leans heavily on its signature distorted guitar sound and the laid-back vocal style, but doesn’t fully capitalize on its strengths. While there are flashes of energy and melodic hooks, much of the record feels repetitive and lacks standout moments. The production and songwriting don’t evolve enough across the tracklist, which makes the album blur together over time. It’s not without charm, especially if you already like their sound, but overall it comes off as fairly average and somewhat forgettable. 5/10
"Noise rock". Without any rock. (It didn't help that I had a hangover today, but this isn't very good)
A relic of that alt/indie scene of the late 80s that is just so boring and bland. The noise elements add some flair but overall this is super forgettable. 2/5
an okay album until it just completely shoot's it's foot at the final mile. it's alt rock.
Having lots of loud guitar riffs doesn't make something good. There are decent moments, but the end of the album really buries everything decent about it.
both the album title and artist's name makes me biased to give this a high rating. However, when listening through the album, I didn't enjoy it very much. It's a good indie rock album, with some good drum beats, but overall didn't find it very special. The lyrics are a little hard to decipher, so maybe they hold more value that I'm not attributing to this album. I consider it good background music, it holds that tricky balance of being interesting enough to not put me to sleep, bug generic enough to not take over all my attention. Maybe listening to it without doing anything else would affect my review, but I really don't have the time, and this is personal review so it's solely based on my opinion, so if you disagree, then you disagree and I'm not arguing about this.
A light 6/10. I like the energy—the guitars and drums hit hard, and I’m into that old-school punk feel… but I just didn’t connect with this one.
This is one of those in-between albums. It didn't quite fit in with college radio staples, hair metal, or progressive/new wave of the 80's. But it was also pre-grunge. Hard to see where these guys fit in. The singer was a little too Violent Femmes for my liking. The songwriting wasn't that creative and I lost interest after about two songs.
It was pretty run of the mill rock, until the wall of screaming metal in “Don’t”. Screaming is a personal turnoff for me. ( hence the one star Sepultura album rating). Then they follow that with a pop-ish song, almost in apology. Or in pandering… suffice it to say the last two songs felt like a departure from the rest in a very calculated let’s try to expand our marketing kind of way. Knocks it from a three to a 2.5 for me.
I wasn’t sure what to do with this record. The songs all melt together into a mess of distorted guitars, and they all sounded the same. I was relieved when the album was over.
The further I got into it, the more upset I got that I had to keep listening to it. It's mostly just noise.
Kinda annoying. 2 is generous but its semi listenable
I mean, yeah, this rocks, but it really made me want to listen to the early Smashing Pumpkins records instead…
- dinosaur sr when - similar sound to pavement which i like - this is another one where i was just a little bored the whole time. give me more funk please - favorites: freak scene - rating: 2/5
Well. That was...something! (And not something good!) Was this recorded in an underwater basement studio? The quality is so poor, I think it was. I'm taking a cue from the band and their song "Don't" which should've served as my warning; the first lyric is a strangled, yelled "WHYYYYYYY?" Exactly. Questioning "WHYYYYYYY?" this album made the list in the first place.
Not the worst, but nowhere near the best. I was happy when the last song finished.
Doesn't really grab me, but not terrible
Wasn’t vibing with this album but started to with their album you’re living all over me.
This sounded like an album that I'd like, but maybe I just wasn't in the mood for it (Monday morning, tired...). It just sounded so muddy to me.
Again, pretty much instantly forgettable. Some of it’s cool, some of it’s too like ‘sludgy’ for me, I don’t know. First half better than the second. (2.5 stars)
The aesthetic is cool, the songs were dross.
Not a fan, honestly not for me. Some parts were fine, but then others were just hard for me to get through. Not for me overall
Sehr schrabbelig. Hab’s beim Roller fahren in leise gehört. Aber geil war es nicht. Nicht meine Musik und dieses verzerrte finde ich ganz schlimm.
Dinosaur Jr. – Bug (1988) On Day 88, I found Bug to be another example of the production trying to carry the whole show. While "Freak Scene" started off promising and gave me a taste of their melodic grunge style, the experience got worse as I moved deeper into the tracklist. The vocals were consistently off and lacked the energy needed to match the "loud as hell" guitar work. While the musicianship is clearly there, the vocal performance felt lazy and detached, making the project feel pretty passable rather than a true body of work. It’s not the worst thing I’ve heard, but it’s a mid-level listen that earns a 2/5 primarily because the production kept it from falling apart although most of it was noise.
Way too much yelling for a Monday morning.
The drums and guitar have a pretty good energy, but the vocal really turns me off from this album. It honestly sounds like he doesn't care at all and couldn't be bothered to put in any effort. He sounds bored and tired, and that makes me bored of listening. The only track where he's really invested is 'Don't' which is kinda cool. Unfortunately the guitar on that track ends up a bit grating to my ears after a little bit Standouts Don't 2/5
Well, 9/10 of these songs was just silly indie music that should be in the background of some teen film or Gavin and Stacey. Nice guitars I guess. However the song called "Don't" was fab, just screaming over and over again. Not enough to raise it into a pass I'm afraid x
This week I’vebeen haunted by bands my 20’s self tried to endure/ discover. I’m at the end of the tether, let’s give this album a try. Nope, still not a Dinosaur Jr fan. Unsure why I love Sonic Youth but the buzzy guitars of DJ don’t do it for me.
Noisy.
ehh 2.5 stars for now
One song played slightly differently with different lyrics stretched out to 9 songs. 'Don't' was the exception and although pretty basic on all fronts, it landed...but not as heavily as the others bombed.
Bored now
Potentially the most unnecessary inclusion on this list yet. Nobody needs to listen to this before or after death
it was fine i got kinda bored
This is not as bad as its predecessor, but still...
To me, this album sounded like something between punk rock and Shoegaze, not as drone as something like my bloody valentine, but it still has that quality of the vocals sneaking through a wall of guitar distortion. The last track was an unexpected change of pace, it sounded more heartfelt like a Beatles song, so I appreciated the versatility. Overall, this was decent 5/10
Not really my cup of tea. Track 9, in particular: who needs that? (lol) So, between a 2 and a 3 for me, and I guess I lean slightly toward 2. (As an aside, I like band member Lou Barlow's spin-off band, Sebadoh, somewhat better.) Trying to think of something else to say about this one. Was kind of a fresh sound, I guess, at the time. If they'd had a better Track 9, might have been a 3, but, as is, I'm sticking with a 2.
Track #9 "Don't" was my favorite for leaning into the mess, and the transition to Track #10 is a funny contrast. While I appreciate some of the guitar work, and I imagine it was pretty cool in '88, once you've heard a few high school bands it's hard to be impressed by this sound. There isn't enough contrast. My ears get lost in the wash of guitar distortion
+Freak Scene
That was something
Hit me like discount Green Day. And then discount Incubus. Or discount Nirvana. It might have preceded all of those. But a lesser iteration, in my opinion. Didn't like the screamo track.
Not sure why this is on the list, there's not much to it though it does feel like a precursor to emo rock (I never had an emo phase). The compositions are fine but nothing stand out here. Also seems like at the end they remembered they were meant to be a screamo band.
Hard rock bruyant saturé
Pfff… je me suis fait chier honnêtement ça va dans tous les sens J’aurais sans doute apprécié à une époque ou alors mieux en concert
2.5
I do like a bit of grunge, and I also like Dinosaur Jr. maybe I just wasn’t into it today but nothing really stuck out for me. The Dynamics are really flat. They got better after this album in my opinion.
Kinda generic rock, kinda not my genre. Quite forgettable.
might just be me but it feels too forced, lyrics and sound and singing overall sound like they are trynna be different
More English punk
Borderline un-listenable in parts but I made it to the end somehow
I'm from a time a place where I'm supposed to like Dinosaur Jr. But I don't really.
2.5/5. Didn’t do a lot for me especially when thinking of other Dinosaur Jr. albums such as “you’re living all over me.” Which is a shame because I typically quite like late 80’s/early 90’s indie rock.
#245/1001. A band that is angrier than Nirvana for one song and less angry in 9 songs.
I liked Freak Scene and Pond Song, but the rest of the album I found either just okay or annoying, with Don't being physically painful to listen to.
Generally a D Jr fan, but this one didn’t do it for me. 2.5
I thought this was just fine, a bit generic, but by no means terrible. But then Don't came on and I really struggled with making it through that song.
It’s a very generic, noisy indie rock album. I feel like I've already heard it 10 times during this challenge because it lacks any real uniqueness. It reminds me of 1977 by Ash. I only enjoyed the first track and nothing more. Looking back, I don’t remember anything from the album except the opening song. I’ll be generous and rate it… 2/5 —————————————— Liked: — Freak Scene
2.5/5
Clearly an influence for some of the modern day punk/grunge/emo I listen to outside of this challenge, but doesn’t connect for me. I could do without the full song of incomprehensible yelling. I appreciate what they were doing, but I won’t be listening again
Hard to get through, the vocals are oppressively bad.
The whiniest lead singer voice I’ve encountered since being forced to listen to Simple Plan as a teenager. This album is not for me.
i think if i’d listened to this at a different time in my life i would’ve really enjoyed it
Ok to pretty ok at times. But Don’t is a terrible track. That and a few other noise sections might drop this to a 2 for me.
Songs mostly sounded the same to me; too scream-y
When you want to be in a rock band but not appear like you care about being in a rock band
Meh
There were some very specific parts of this that i enjoyed and thought were listenable. And then there was the rest of it.
Sounds like early versions of music I'd eventually like, but for now, it's forgettable
Forgettable.
Alternative Rock, 1988 -> 2
a high 2 but didn't really grip me
I want to like Dinosaur Jr but so little stands out to me. They are fine in a playlist format but listening to just this band can feel repetitive at times.
I really wish I knew why this album is so obsessed with noise rock. I'm at 491 out of 1001, and I bet we've had 50-60 noise rock albums that are just... wall of sound noise through many of their tracks. This was not fun to listen to. While maybe less true noise rock than most of the others, it still just felt like too much.
Sounds out of tune a lot and just noise
Good, not great.
Quite grungy for 88. Something I totally missed the first time
In a nutshell: show-off. There's a fine line between doing your thing and a flex. J.Mascis does both here. I might come back to this album in a few months. Overall: 3/10
I think it's fine but also I sadly (irrationally) haaate the vocals and just dislike the sound. Droning and mushed together (probably on purpose) and not for me 4/10
A lot of the music here is solid. I’m just not a fan of the vocals
Sort of a pixies sound, but not quite as good on the songs. 2/5
Definitely an indie/grunge album. There wasn’t much on here that I’d really like to listen to again. Just was definitely the worst offender to the ears, but the rest of average stuff. Keep The Glove I actually did like. It has this mess of noise at the end that actually worked for me. Other than that, just another album.
Average. Crop, not Cream.
Der erste Song war ganz gut und ich war gespannt. Dann ging es bergab. An manchen Stellen konnte man sich das Ganze kaum noch anhören. Schade.
A few hints at proggy guitar stuff but not that great. Lead singers voice very pitchy.
Like with Sonic Youth, a lot of this is just noises. I like a lot of adjacent music to this but I’m just not into this.
Шум, но уже ее сексуальный
олелемалеле
I saw very little high value musical content in this. Seemed like a lot of drudgery and poor vocal delivery with occasional good instrumental patches. Too much angst for me, although would have probably been of use age 15.
- .... in the words of Kool Keith .... "WHY?"
The first few songs were okay, I was vibing with the singers voice and musicality, but then I got lost half way through and didn't enjoy the ending of the album. The names of the songs made me laugh though, so there is that!
I didn’t mind the beginning but then it got metally at some point and I was done
** very little music on this album. Mostly screaming vocals and banging instruments..
I like the genre, but it's too raw for my taste. It does have some good songs
Joe G: “Noise” Harness: “One of my favourite albums. Glad it’s on there.” Stevo: “Maybe an instrumental version wouldn’t have been that bad” Me: 4 star music with a 1 star singer. It was a pretty comfortable three until “Don’t”, which I had to turn off, resulting in a downgrading to 2.
Boring.
Punk très rough - voix plus ou moins intéressantes, un peu whiny. Musicalement moyen
The more I listened, the less I liked this
As a first-time listener, Bug felt like a raw and noisy introduction to Dinosaur Jr’s world. “Freak Scene” stood out with its catchy hooks and emotional punch, but the rest of the album didn’t quite grab me in the same way. There’s energy and attitude here, but it didn’t fully click for me overall.
I saw where this album was described as 'noise rock'. Well, they got that first half right...
2.1
... Did not like it, will place a more thorough recap at another time...
wonder if Dinosaur Senior sounds better.
Just not a noise rock guy
Very teenage garage band, meh
An album of that one nirvana song that you don't like
Album began ok. Last two songs were just annoying noise. "Don't" was terrible noise and "Keep the Glove" became noise as well. Not very memorable, but overall listenable.
Normally dont mind this kind of thing but there's nothing about this that warrants must-listen status.
Where do I begin? This is probably the most mediocre album I've listened to so far. The songs are very repetitive. The vocalist doesn't show me that they have anything to offer that I can't find elsewhere. If I had to describe this album in 1 word, it would be "forgettable".
Oooof, started off ok, interesting early alternative sounds. Ended in a way that made me not want to put it on again. 2 stars.
Bad angst teen movie soundtrack
I rly wanted to like this but I just didn’t rly. I do appreciate the sound and some stuff like this I like a lot but it just wasn’t THAT good overall. The only problem I rly had was the vocals being annoying but ik it’s supposed to sound like that with the indie alt rock genres. A lot of the guitar riffs I did enjoy and I didn’t overly hate anything but it just was quite middle of the road. My favourite songs were No Bones and Keep The Glove but I did enjoy Don’t a lot aswell. Overall I’m not going to be returning to this at all rly so I’m gonna give it a 5.4/10 2.7/5
Aside from Freak Scene, it feels like the band are not giving it their all. 4/10
Boring punk
Started off OK - the last song - Don't - was a big no from me. What the hell was that? I'll say 2.
Decent but the last couple tracks really lost me
Not horrible but nothing that caught my attention.
Dinosaur Jr is just not for me. I have had this album (actually the tape) since probably 1994. Unlike Sonic Youth which I always avoided until this list I did try to get into this album. I know that they are important because of who they influenced and what they were doing in contrast to the state of music in 1988, but this sounds too much like all the million bands who imitated them in the 90s.
- hat mich irgendwie nicht so richtig abgeholt die Platte 2 – Respektiere ich, aber nicht meins 🤷♂️ Ich sehe, warum das Album wichtig ist oder geschätzt wird, aber es hat mich nicht gepackt.
This album wasn't all that bad, really, until the final song ("Don't") which, is, uh, certainly ... noise? That's probably the most positive thing I can comment on it.
Sometimes felt like it was coming through poorly on radio. One song I was really tempted to skip, but overall I could enjoy it. Very punky, and emotional.
I actually did rather like this album, but it doesn't really feel essential. I had never heard of this group before, so maybe they are more influential than I give them credit for, but this doesn't stand apart from some of the other rock on this list.
I like distortion and guitars and I can hear the influences they made on later bands, and there were moments which were good, though I didn't particularly enjoy this album. I was leaning towards 3 stars but then came the last, very noisy song which rounds it down to a 2 overall.
I think it's kinda shitty rock, not for me Will I listen to again: 1%
Not my style
Didn’t care for this.
This album is like have a terrible inner monolgue played against a background of mouldy porridge (with loads of distortion)
I bought this album on the back of Freak Scene (remember when that was a thing? No streaming or downloads, just hope and Sounds or MM or NME or your local record shop staff to guide you). I was disappointed and I still am. Freak Scene was and is awesome though, for me it was one of the defining tracks of that part of my messy life, a staple of every half-decent indie night playlist. The rest of the album is mediocre at best.
"Hi" "Yeah." "Are you?" "Joey." "What? Oh I see." "Yeah man. Right at the front" "At the front?" "It was the best. Did you see them?" "Well, Mr Dumit, were just in your area to talk to people about their broadband provider. Do you ..." "I was right by the speakers." "Errr." "So cool. You could literally like, see the bass, you know, like really see it." "HERE'S A FLYER MR DUMIT. For fucksake."
If I was a teenager in the late 80s, I'd probably like this, but I wasn't and I don't.
# Album Name: DInosaur Jr # Artist: Bug # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Didnt enjoy this one. One good song and thats it. The rest was trash # Top Tunes: Freak scene # Would I listen to it again? No
Did nothing for me. Just sounded like a lot of mid level alt rock
Hard indie, huh. I reckon it must be good for those who enjoy that kind of music. However, I am not that kind of girl.
High school band at best. Just noisy with laughably bad singing; literally noise rock. 4/10
Not my taste.
not for me
Yawn. More of the same. Mediocre/bad lead singer, rock band. Kinda noisy. Had to skip some songs due to terrible vocals. 2 stars. - 'No Bones': God these vocals are TERRIBLE
Not good, very generic
This album crawled so that other indie rock albums could walk and run. It was mostly fine, but not particularly catchy in my opinion. Which is a little surprising, because I love indie rock. I just didn't love this indie rock.
I mean... it started out pretty neutral and I was almost vibing with this until "Don't" came on. Jesus Christ what was THAT. This is just noise. Absolutely not.
I found myself asking "Wow, is this really still playing?" only to realize the album was only 38 minutes. I liked some of it, hated some of it. I definitely wouldn't listen to it as a whole album again though.
Taki ojciec grunge u
Busqué la música entre tanto ruido...eeeepa! Ahí estaba.
Noisey, solo-ey, but as with almost everything Dino Jr., I can’t get into them.
I kinda was digging some of this, but nearly 6 minutes of "Don't" brings it down a star.
Meh, I missed this album when it came out and I don’t find it compelling now.
Uhh… I don’t know. Feels like it had some promising moments where it felt like an early inspiration for skate punk bands like Blink 182, Sum 41 etc. But then you suddenly get songs like ’Don’t’, which is just pure garbage. In the end it wasn’t convincing enough. Going to have to settle for a 2, probably a weak one.
I just don't get Dinosaur Jr. To me it's just atonal singing which i know is kind of the point of them but still, it's just not for me. The guitar riffs are the best part, with "Yeah we know" being my favourite. Still the singing just locks it to 2 stars for me.
I had one of their albums growing up but never really listened to it that often and don't think I would listen to this one again either.
It's ok!
Like the energetic rhythm Fav song - Don't 2/5
Not to my liking at all, way too screaming
Nothing really stood out to me. There were some cool parts, but also a lot of filler. There’s a few Dinosaur Jr. songs I do really like, none that really stood out on this album to me. Perhaps I should have paid attention more.
I always thought Dinosaur Jr. kinda sucked but had never really listed to them. Now I have and my opinion remains unchanged.
Even though this is grunge, before this sort of punk was even being called grunge, it is still fairly anodyne. They get an extra star for being there first, but I was bored by the whole endeavor.
Jesus Christ the vocals on this are awful.
I'm a big fan of indie and alternative but, for some reason, Dinosaur Jr. just never really kept my attention. It's fine but generally pretty generic.
Just noise to me
This was an okay album. I found the music to be noisy (in a good way) but the vocals are awful.
Schiint mer chili fescht wie es Dörenand ohni wörk e Melodie oder so. Ons wtf god bi don't ab?
Has few good songs but the whole album was more an underwhelming listening experience. On to the next one, nothing hard to leave behind. (2.5/5.0)
I'll give this album two stars purely on the basis of some interesting and skillful guitar work on some of the tracks. If not for that it would be one star, especially given the descent into mindless screaming on track 9.
Freak scene started ok, but by the second song I'm wondering why the dude has to sing like this? Don't was just pure noise. 2*
Starts off like Psychedelic Furs, then moves into gritty Drive By Truckers. But almost every song is ruined by an intolerable screeching (not wailing, not jamming, not even screaming) guitar and unlistenable distortion. WTF?!
I had higher hopes since I’d heard one of their songs before, but I couldn’t get into it
Culero.
Freak Scene
2/5
Decent alt rock let down by terrible singing Favorites: Yeah We Know, Let It Ride Least Favorites: No Bones
Just not for me. I know how beloved Dinosaur Jr. is but they just never grabbed my attention.
OK.
No soy fan de rock tan pesado supongo, la canción Don’t le bajó mucho Rating:5
I didn't mind this album, till I got to "don't". It felt like a departure from the rest of the album, and a departure I didn't like one bit.
Album 699 of 1001 Dinosaur Jr. - Bug (1988) Rating : 2.5 / 5 I came across another album from this band that I liked a lot. Thought the vocalist had a unique voice. This album is pretty much the opposite. This is their 3rd album. They lost something somewhere. It really falls apart at the end.
The instrumentals seemed to drown out the singer a lot of the time
Underwhelming
Förstår inte storheten i det här. Känns inte speciellt för mig. Lite rock, lite punk, lite pop. Kanske lite före sin tid? 2 av 5
the mixing...
Ironically, I took a skim through the reviews on here prior to listening and the amount of people who complained about the noise got my hopes up. In reality, with the exception of ‘Don’t’, the only real standout track for me, it remains quite pop oriented and lacks memorability. Bug isn’t offensively bland enough to be too low; however, with the exception of Don’t, not remarkable enough to be anything quite great. Would sit at a 2.5 if I was able to assign decimals.
4/10 - most of the songs were fine but the second to last song was all yelling and I did not enjoy it
Generic, grungy, guitar music. Every song sounds the same. Probably amazing if you grew up listening to it but sadly not for me. Favourite Tracks: Don't Won't be revisiting. 2/5
Mildly nostalgic.
Did not particularly like this
Another instance of "why the fuck do these morons have multiple albums on this list?" Favourite songs: No Bones, Freak Scene, Pond Song Least favourite songs: Don't (listen as the vocalist ingests the microphone while simultaneously pulling off his own fingernails.... Seriously, wtf was that?!?) 2/5
Started well but nah, not for me
Album started off fine enough but then the second song came on and I wanted to jump out the window. This trend unfortunately continued. Really awful whiney vocals, like your drunk friend at karaoke. This is garbage but at least it's short. 3.25/10 (1.625/5)
Pleasant for precisely two tracks
This started ok, but progressively got worse as it went. By the end it was just an annoying noise in my ears and I wanted to be over.
Dull
This album reminded me of a lot of sexual encounters I've had with my wife. In this case, I'm the band, and I'm SO stoked. I have so many cool tricks up my sleeve to impress her. I'm gonna show off the pedalboard and be like, "Check out this crazy tone!" She, on the other hand, is me, the listener; mostly just waiting for it to be over; nodding her head and going, "Yeah, that's really great." If you ever have to scream at someone, "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME?!" I think you kind of have your answer, don't you?
I feel the pain of everyone struggling to get through this album’s muddled malaise, then I feel nothing.
Mediocre album by a somewhat overrated band (in my opinion)
Can’t believe I’m giving this band both a 5 and a 2 in the same month but I really could not get into this one. Far to much on the “noise” side of things for me.
In theory I should probably have liked this one but didn’t really grab me.
Cacophony, unlimiy
Fuzzy but for me impossible to recognize different songs
oh oh nei danke han irgendwie es borderline suizidals folk album erwartet aber da hani mi chli verschätzt 2 chäfer für vo‘s dinosauriers de jüngscht
I’ll confidently say I didn’t listen thoroughly. I played this while gaming, while working, and while being a sloot and I never found peace with the noise. I became a boomer listening to this. Back in my day, we broke shit and smashed the system, man. Says the generation that caused the mess we’re in. 2/5, I didn’t hate it just didn’t like it.
Cool guitar but too noisy for me
Listening to this straight after the Pixies just illustrates my point about how joyous Doolittle is. By comparison this is a bit of a dirgy slog lacking any moments of joy.
Why did they let this guy sing? He's shite.
why was there that one part that was a lot of wailing and thrashing and rending of garments the rest was fine enough
Screamy, grungy, feedback-y rock. Nothing here to write home about that’s for fucking sure.
I didn't like this
While I usually like this kind of music this artist or at least this album didn't resonate with me at all. I can't put my finger on exactly why but I didn't enjoyed my listen through.
Somehow this album felt really long, even though it was a relatively short one and it just kept on going and going (unless I maybe looped it but I didn't realise when the songs changed as they all sounded very similar). The whole album had a little bit of a generic 90s feeling and given that it came out in 1988, it was probably slightly ahead of its time. Nothing too exciting, I guess it was also for a background listen, but pretty meh nowadays. The song "Don't" though, which is second to last in the album... crazily bad, actually just screaming into the microphone, and although the instrumentals were alright, it's like getting a free ice cream after someone beats the shizzle out of you. That dropped my rating significantly because it wasn't a normal length but 5 minutes and 41 seconds. Yes, I could have skipped it but what kind of a reviewer would I be...
windscreen splatter
Chaotic is about as descriptive as it gets for this one. Too busy.
Having trouble giving this anything more than 2 stars. Some pieces I liked, but far more pieces I viscerally disliked. Is Dinosaur Jr versatile or unfocused? Fearless or oblivious? Who's to say. I'm not sure I know anyone who would like every genre they're doing on this album. It's so punk rock to have lead vocalists with fucking terrible voices. Kinda a flex. Doesn't make me like it though. 'No Bones' is a good example. I can't imagine having the gall to be a lead vocalist if my voice sounded like this Having said that, I enjoyed the instrumentals on a few songs. They Always Come was fun and had some nice rawk elements going on. Having now said something nice, I really hated "Don't". Who honestly likes screamo
I liked their other album more, this was too noisy and sounded badly recorded. It kept getting noisier and less cohesive as it went on.
Can hear all the things it will influence. Lots of variables tunes. Can't stand his whiny voice
nah
Es 'indie' pero del ruidoso y feo, onda los temas más trash de Pixies. Realmente no gustó.
I hate the way this guy sings. Don't is just noise, not in a good way. I don't get this
If it wasn't November 6th 2024 this morning as I listen to this is could be a bit more objective. So while not terrible it loses a star because I feel terrible about the country/world being doomed
The lead singer kind of sucks and the band is kind of rough but that's maybe what they are going for. They're not not my thing but I wouldn't ever see myself seeking this out. 2.5/5
Okay-ish
I could not get into this album at all.
I wasn't a fan of the guy's voice; he just sounded whiney. The music itself wasn't bad. 2.5/5
Musically this has some interesting moments but the vocals really put me off to the point where I can't listen to it.
boring. not necessarily bad, but like... so much I've heard before. But I would've thought, that this album is from the 90s-00s just from the sound of some songs. so these guys already did boring 00s music in the 80s. that's cool.
Joy. More grungey, alternative, whiny indie. Wikipedia lists this as 'Noise Rock' which is actually pretty accurate. Just noise, where all the tracks just sort of blend together to create one long 35 minute song. They sound a little bit like a bad high school band trying to emulate their favourite artists. I don't like the singer's voice, it seems very out of tune. Is that the point? I will admit there are a couple of cool riffs here and there ('Yeah We Know' and 'Let It Ride' for example) and the solos are very loud and over the top, I quite enjoyed them. I thought 'Don't' was actually pretty cool. Everything on this track is screaming, the guitars, the vocals, really great. This type of music just isn't my thing. I'm just glad it wasn't a double album and was finished after a little over half an hour. Decent enough background music but nothing more. A generous two stars.
Noisy and formless. Not my thing.
Iets beter dan de vorige maar nog steeds matig. Nummers pakken niet echt, en klinken ook niet top.
Some noisy oiks abusing guitars and drums…
I kind of dig this but at the same time I don’t. I like this type of guitar forward, loud, punky, progressive sound but this isn’t hitting for me. Some of the riffs and jams are cool but it’s the washed out vocals by the wall of sound that really take points away
Very low 2 stars. Nothing about this is good, and it did annoy me quite a bit. The saving grace is this as actually labeled as "Noise Rock" on Wikipedia, and I would say the album very much ticks this particular box.
I don't know, I liked some songs. I think it's the lead singer's voice that I can't get over. 2/5
I'd never really liked these guys, but thought this was pretty pleasant on repeat listen. That's probably a sign that my tastes are rejuvenating. They're a little harsh, a little sludgy, but that suits me. That said it's pretty rough. I think there's better guys doing this same kind of thing (e.g. Sunny Day Real Estate). And the song "Don't" is so unbelievably unpleasant that no reasonable person would sit through it.
Started strong, devolved into some fairy generic and samey indie rock for the most part. Then came "Don't". I'm okay with noise rock but that was straight up obnoxious. Started a 4, ended a 2.
Nothing special, almost boring.
2 awful mix too noisy
Not quite grunge but noisier with lo-fi production. Almost all the songs are equally noisy and jangly. Vocals are weak, and not intentionally. Almost all songs kind of sound similar without any melodic hooks or notable guitar passages. And then there is this growling monster of a song ' Don't '. Probably the heaviest/noisiest thing I've ever heard. Truly ear bleeding. Maybe a 2.5.
Last tracks did my nut in
My instinct is to say generic indie rock but I know it’s actually definitive indie rosck so there you have it.
I'd heard of this band before but didn't really know anything about them. After listening, they feel like one of those bands that may have influenced a lot of music that I like, but I don't actually like much. Don't was definitely the most memorable track - not sure if that's a good thing or not.
It's okay
I was enjoying the indie-rock part at the beginning, but unfortunately the album quickly devolved as it went on
Bit Bleh, nothing really interesting going on
It was fine. Had some good early alt rock in it, but got a bit too noise for my taste toward the end.
Very dissonant. Not for me 2/5
+: Freak Scene, Let It Ride, Pond Song, Don't, +-: They Always Come, Yeah We Know, Budge, The Post -: No Bones 5,2/10
Not offensive, but also not enjoyable. I appreciate the early contributions to grunge, but I definitely won't ever listen to this again
"Don't" was absolutely awful. I actually jolted out of my seat a bit when the screaming started. The rest of the album was okay, and I quite liked "Freak Scene". I'm not a savant of alt-rock, so maybe I just need to broaden my horizons a bit.
Not for me
It started off OK then there was one track that was very shouty which nearly made me stop listening. It was alright but personally not my thing 2*
I never really got Dinosaur Jr. like a number of my friends did. They have some stuff I enjoy to an extent but I just don't get them overall.
"Oooooh. Dinosaur Jr" I thought. I know they're cool, but haven't really ever listened to them. Meh.
Si fanno ascoltare ma non hanno attratto la mia attenzione..
Not a huge fan of the noise rock parts of this album, but the more mellow songs (like Keep the Glove) are better to listen to. The album feels a bit all over the place, but I've always struggled to enjoy Dinosaur Jr.
Indie Rock from late 80's but it sounds like its from the 90's.
Once through is plenty thank you. Noise rock that lacks tune, melody or really much else. I like a wide range of music but I just can't see the merit in this unless you are 14 and angry at your dad in 1989.
Not feeling it. I didn't make it through the whole album.
Don't know why, but this band has never really clicked with me. I have enjoyed their collaborations with other artists though.
Decent mesh of indie/shoegaze-y/metally*/grungy rock, but never quite coheres or builds up to a satisfying point, with the aggressive, abrasive Noiseness being more earshattering than galvanizing. *Or whatever the hell Don’t is. Transition from said song to Keep the Glove is also Beatles-esque, namely reminiscent of the transition from the heavy, abstract, lyrically sparse I Want You (she’s so heavy) to Here’s Comes the Sun.
The instrumentals are decent but the vocal performance is horrible. A slight plus of the album is how it slowly lures the listener into accepting more and more noise. It starts off quite tame but at the end, it becomes very noisy. 2/5
I’d love to love this album more. I liked the song Don’t but it seems the hardcore outlier on this album.
Was going to give it 3 stars until Don’t came in. Including that on an album drops it at least 1 star.
Didn't much care for this, to be honest. It's very same-y, you can't get much of the vocals because they're pretty weak and overpowered by the drive of everything else. Ends up all blending into one, except towards the end where it goes full noise rock. Not enough variation or anything to give it more than a 2.
Opening track is decent, the rest is a lot of nosie
Best Song: Freak Scene. By virtue of appearing at the beginning of the album, I had the benefit of having not heard 9 other soundalikes just prior. Worst Song: Pond Song. Channeling a real poor-man's Neil Young on this one. Overall: Boy if that wasn't the same song 10 times in a row. One single flat line of grungy rock. Music for driving through flat topography. Also, what a terrible idea to place a cacophonous, screaming noise track second to last, just to ensure that whatever catharsis might have been on the horizon gets immediately wiped away as we turn to the regularly scheduled programming of happy-go-lucky grunge.
Wouldn’t mind seeing them live in a bar, otherwise underwhelming
Started mid but finished worse. Didn’t really enjoy, 2/5
Bad singing tbh
I understand that this was influential for bands, particularly punk, that followed - like Nirvana. And overall it was pleasing enough while I worked on a statement of work document. But then there's that track "Don't" which is just unnecessary screaming and shrieking - and when something like that shatters my flow state then you're losing some big points pal.
Hated first two songs and gave up.
Dudes voice is a bit sucky
Noise Fav songs: yeah we know ÷\
I never got the point of noise rock, but it's really the sloppy vocals that killed it for me.
Wait, *another* Dinosaur Jr. album? Seriously? I went pretty easy on the last one but now I demand to be impressed if they are going to take up two slots on this list....Nope did not meet my elevated expectations. Started out ok but I found less and less to like as the album wore on.
From the cover, I want expecting this sound. I like the guitar and the music a lot, but I cannot stand the whiny man voice, he sounds so over his own music. It does sound very modern for being from the 80s.
Not a fan really but liked it better than You're Living All Over Me.
The entire album sounded like it wasn’t completely finished.
Not into the droning, wonky-pitched singing or the all-jangle guitar. Could have been saved with songwriting, but it wasn’t.
Some cool riffs here and there, but its not really my thing.
Dino Jr...a band I should probably love that I just don't connect with. This is a below avg. offering from their catalogue as well. 2/5
5/10 Highlight: Yeah we know
Not really my thing
Nice album cover! Singer bad! Music is fine! Mixing isn't great! Barely a 3! NEVERMIND I JUST TURNED ON DON'T!
The second to last track nearly tanked it to a 1.
I've never listen to too much Dinosaur Jr. This is okay but it's not a style that grabs me as much as some. This is far from inexperienced but that's almost a rawness to this that's interesting. The guitar almost gets into a noise style but the vocals are very clean. I think this is worth having in the list. Not my favourite but it's good in its style. Don't and Keep The Glove back to back felt like whiplash.
For the most part I enjoyed this but it took some work and there were some songs I really didn't care for. I'd say Pond Song was my favorite track. I don't think this is required listening. I assume it's here for it's influence on a specific sound that I think later bands did better. I enjoy thier 2021 album Sweep it Into Space
I wasn’t sure if I liked this album, but then “Don’t” came on and that sealed the deal. I didn’t really like it. 4/10
Lustloses Gitarren-Geschrabbel.
Honestly the guitar playing on the album is phenomenal, but was ruinwd for me by the singers voice. At times it is just out of tune and grating, like a drunk me on karaoke night.
альбом? альбом... рок? рок... я хуй знает вообще как это комментировать, но спасибо, что хоть быстро прошло и ты просто типа галочку около "прослушано" в своей голове ставишь. но самый прикол -- у нас будет еще один альбик от этих чечиков
Nothing exciting. Plenty of noise but meh.
Ein ungeschliffener Diamant
2.5.
Yeah still not a dino jr fan.
