Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Good hard rock.
We love you Fugazi. 'Repeater' adequately describes the sort of variety you'll get on the album but I love the hell out of it anyway. Very tightly written and performed for something in the hardcore/punk/thrash area of sound. fav tracks: Repeater, Merchandise, Styrofoam, Break-In
Fugazi lands in the same camp as Sonic Youth for me where they have a ridiculous influence in their genre (Post-Hardcore) and literally everyone who likes the genre has listened to them. But by that same token it makes their music, or at least on this album, not feel as interesting as many others that came later and were directly inspired by it. Now don't get me wrong this album is great, production and perfomances are absolutely great but again, I think I prefer PHC that came later because it either had more of a darker and caustic attitude or was just more varied.
People who I know who aren't keen on punk rate this band which I find curious as it sounded very punk to me. Which I'm fine with.
Dope
It was fun. Overall, I found the album a bit challenging, but it was also fun. I'll listen to it again. 4/5
pretty good album! Enjoyed it a bit and added some songs to liked
I had no idea before I listened but I enjoyed it
Great, classic album
Great album, great band. Had heard of them but never heard them. Will be coming back to this one for sure.
interesting
Absolute masterclass of alt rock drums and bass. Other than the title track I could have done without any of the vocals. Highlight track : Joe 1
Some cool post hardcore grooves and a good use of dynamics in these songs. Lost me in a couple of parts but never for long - Interested to delve into the rest of their catalogue and see how things develop after their debut
I got onto Fugazi a bit late as I was only familiar with the compilation 13 Songs I borrowed off of a friend’s brother after I professed my love for At The Drive-In. This album is great, and really put me on to the whole post-hardcore thing (whatever that genre definition means these days). Listening to it now that I play bass, I can really appreciate what the bass is doing and it’s making me want to learn some of these tracks. Great stuff.
Here we have arguably the greatest "indie" band of the 1980s and 1990s, with their tighest, fiercest, cleanest, most impressive collection. For this general genre of music it doesn't get a lot better than this. I was struck this listen by the abundance of powerful rock riffs, which one doeesn't always first think of when mentioning Fugazi, as well as their more signature qualities, like the intensely groovy rhythm section and the wild freedom of the mangled dual guitar sonics. Fugazi were my favorite band for many, many years, and I still love them very much. This is probably their best album (I would put In On The Kill Taker second, 13 Songs third, and Steady Diet fourth, but that's just me).
There’s a lot to like here. Drums and bass are always dialed in, lots of clever melodies and riffs, some fun technical playing. Punky but not trying too hard.
Direct, straightforward, intense, honest, raw.
An incredibly consistent and solid post-hardcore album. Loved the energy and the attitude, but what I liked the most is how melodic and experimental this album can get. Great examples would be the songs 'Turnover0' 'Repeater', 'Blueprint', 'Sieve-Fisted Find' and 'Joe #1' (if we count the Repater & 3 songs version). I also feel the need that the sound of the bass in this album is absolutely fantastic. Some of the tracks that I mentioned are my favourites thanks to it. My only big complain would be that the song 'Repeater' sounds like it has a lower quality than the rest. In the end, this is a fantastic record and one that I see myself returning to.
Exactly what I'd expect from an album release in 1990. Raw, not over-produced. Easy to listen to considering the genre. I have listened to them sparsely since high school, but never really stuck. Really like it.
Holy shit the opening hits so hard, but it was brought down by the vocals. I knew the Fugazi singles but hadn’t listened to this album before. The vocals did grow on me over the course of the album. It got a little repetitive sounds but this is definitely a heavy hitter. I bet these shows for this tour were incredible. I’m really glad I listened.
It’s good, clear foundation of 90’s alternative.
very good, immaculate rock vibes
A new discovery for me and I was really taken aback. Incredible guitar sound and very tight, complicated rhythmic foundation. Interesting little riffs too. Teenage me would have been very excited to have discovered Fugazi. The lyrics were good enough but the vocals from both singers didn't do it for me and drops a 5 to a 4.
First completely novel album for me. Was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
Ta perron la neta
Real good and real cool. I like what came after fugazi and before. But I hella respect the contribution to modern music.
Fugazi is great. Prefer '13 Songs' to this album, as it has the classics I love from them. This one is a bit more mellow (for punk), and is still pretty awesome.
Everything was good, especially bass. Vocals wasn't great, but it was decent. I prefer to listen other things, but I could enjoy this album sometimes.
Just a solid record. I feel like Fugazi got boiled down to a meme Hot Topic tshirt when I would have gotten into them as a angsty young buck. My mistake for taking another 2 decades to actually sit down and listen to them.
Not bad but the early 90s I have to say - I was kind of expecting a grunge-ish type album resembling an early-days Nirvana and I was dreading it. This has some energy and packs a punch.
Absolutely love Fugazi!! They have a few albums I like more than this but the energy is so good!
This friggin rocks. I love the instrumentals. Some epic guitars and also drums. And it is pretty punk
one of the goat of all time bands... just unreal how good this shit is
That was a great album - I realise I didn't pay these guys enough attention when they were around in the 90s. Blueprint and Shut the Door my favourite tracks
My 51 year old European ass has had some blind spots when it comes to early 90s US alternative rock - I was aware of Fuagzi and this much revered album but had never sat down with it - so I'm listening to a lot of these for the first time which naturally strips my experience of any emotional connection. And thus, unlike other records I have discovered recently-ish, through this project and related tangents, this particular flavour of brash, angular, shouty punk noise doesn't quiiite manage to be my cup of tea. But I'm digging it enough & can see why it's in here. Keeping "Shut The Door".
A punkier, rockier racket than I expected and I really enjoyed the noises.
Goes hard but remains culty. I know it’s cool and the guys were groundbreaking but I always felt a little arms length during the listen.
Finally something I can vibe to!
Goes hard.
Fugazi fucking rule 9/10
DS-1/Big Muff powered, grungy, hard alt rock. Vocal delivery derived more from punk rock presentation as opposed to more melodic vocal styles of popular grunge and alt rock bands of the late eighties/early nineties. Turnover is a strong start to the album. Repeater (the song) reminds of Rage Against The Machine, although several years earlier. Tom Morello definitely heard this song. Other notables include Brendan #1, Merchandise, Blueprint, Two Beats Off, and Shut The Door. Honestly the whole album is pretty good, not a bad song really - probably helped by the fact that some songs are only a couple minutes long and lead into one another well. Really enjoyed this one.
You Wanted Everything, You Needed Everything 1001 Albums Generator 75 (07/16/2025) Fugazi are a band without whom the history of punk would be incomplete. They were at the forefront of the post-hardcore movement that emerged from Washington D.C. in the mid-80's (the so-called harDCore scene), which took the hardcore punk from earlier in the decade and combined it with artsier, longer compositions and arrangements. Instead of a constant barrage of sound, post-hardcore is built on constant tension and release and took inspiration from post-punk, noise rock, and more at the time. Repeater is their magnum opus and an album that I had not heard before, but I do love some good post-hardcore, so I was excited to listen. I think the key to understanding this album is in the work of the rhythm section, especially bassist Joe Lally, whose melodic playing adds an interesting layer that interplays with Brendan Canty's drum parts wonderfully. This chemistry is obvious from the first song, Turnover, which sees the guitars essentially slowly strumming chords for the verses, while the primary melody that gets stuck in my head comes from the bassist. This continues into the title track, which also has some really crazy guitar feedback that reminds me a bit of Big Black's style of PHC. This song also shows the funkier side of Fugazi that was a surprise to me. After a slightly forgettable instrumental, we arrive at one of the most melodic songs on Repeater, Merchandise. This almost sounds like an Offspring song, which is a good thing to me. This is one of the most popular songs on Repeater, and for good reason. Honestly, I was also surprised at how low the tempo is on a lot of these songs. Blueprint, for example, feels more like an indie song a la Pixies than what I think of when I think "punk". However, that isn't to say there's no high tempo, high energy pieces of music here. Greed has this really strange start/stop intro and rhythm but once it gets going, it's probably the most punishing song here. I love it. Styrofoam also has a really cool guitar part that feels like a precursor to some pop punk stuff, but the chorus is certainly weird enough to ensure that you do not mistake it for a radio hit. I will say that the slower songs do drag this album down at times. Two Beats Off has a kind of cool palm muted guitar part, but overall, it's not my thing. I also don't love the vocals on Reprovisional or Shut The Door, although the latter has a lot going for it that I really do enjoy. Repeater is an album that is a little hard to get into at first. It took till my third listen to really crack this nut, but I get it now. It is a classic, although I didn't love it as much as I hoped I would. 3.5 that I will round up to a 4. Favs: Turnover Repeater Greed Least Fav: Reprovisional
I probably write this a lot but this is the first time I have ever heard a Fugazi album. I obviously know the name of the band but didn't know what their music sounded like at all. Their sound is a lot less hardcore rock and more post-punk and I did not expect this. I guess I should have expected some of it since this band contains members of Minor Threat. I may explore more of Fugazi's discography here in the future, as I enjoyed this sufficiently to do more. Pleasant surprise. Turnover Merchandise Blueprint Two Beats Off Reprovisional Song 1
Never heard of this group, but fun.
Disco entretenido, buen sonido y buenos riffs de rock.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Really strong album throughout. I was already familiar with Fugazi and many of their songs. But this was the first time I sat down and properly consumed this album. A real beast of hard core music, I can understand why Fugazi has such a devout following. Particularly enjoyed tracks: Repeater, Two Beats Off, Blueprint I'll definitely re-listen to this; this album requires multiple listening to get the best out of it. Overall, really glad to have checked this out. A 1001 album generator success.
Fugazi could easily be one of my favourite bands if I'd listen beyond this album, but I never do. Their catchy but aggressive aound satisfies a specific itch for me The sound of this album is impeccable. Their energy is captured so well, it makes me wish I had seen them live The album starts and ends very strongly, theres a slight dip in the middle for me but there's nothing I dislike Very close to a 5, could by brought up in future Highlights: Repeater, Merchandise, Turnover
Starts really strong but gets a little long by the end. Like a lot of punk, a lot about a vibe as much as the music, but there's also plenty of good rocking happening here.
THIS IS NOT A FUGAZI REVIEW.
Straight edge is the antidote to toxic masculinity. Post-hardcore or post-punk or whatever you want to call it but if you aren’t hooked after the cut from Repeater to Brendan #1, get out of the pit! I am probably a bigger fan of 13 Songs, but this album kills, too! I just want to crank it and jump into a mosh pit. Notable bangers: Repeater, Brendan #1, Sieve-Fisted Find, Greed, Two Beats Off, and Reprovisional.
Not much to say here. The first bona fide masterpiece of this project for me and the first that lives somewhere in my own top 100/head canon shortlist. Just 11 straight shots of pure adrenaline to the system. Every time I revisit it, it gets better, and that's like 25 years of revisiting at this point.
Pretty cool! They sound angry.
Sick album Inspired many other great artists
Keep this on repeater.
Get vinyl
Yeah this was a really enjoyable post-hardcore album. Only a few songs really grab me but this record still kicks ass. Very high 4
Good choice for a workout
Interesting one this, I think I vibed with it but I'm also pretty sure I was going to give it a 3. Then I went on lunch and it just happened to be playing again and it just kinda hit me a bit. It can't be a 5 because frankly it's just not that good, but it's better and deserves more than a 4. I then did something I never really do and read the comments before grading it and the top comment really stuck out to me as Mr Fugazi seems like a good dude and the comment was written by someone who helped produce the album
Love this album, though the two EPs that were released before this album, still rise above this for me. Fugazi’s incredible rhythms and lyrics always move me. I never feel yelled at by them, more invited to stand next to them and add my shout.
82% Best: Turnover; Merchandise; Two Beats Off; Styrofoam Must-Hear? Sure
Finally some jam songs from the 90s. Brendan #1 is excellently orchestrated, reminds me of some jam songs by Ride a few years later. I was expecting this to be more shoegazey since their big hit (I'm So Tired) is like a legendary song in the shoegaze community. While this album wasn't as good as I was expecting since Fugazi is so highly respected online, I still really enjoyed the sound of the album, and it sounded much more mid-90s than early. So 4/5.
Start of the album: loving this combo of vocals/intrumentals. I can rock with this. Shout rock isn't generally my favorite (see: my black Flag review or my le tigre review), but when the band really knows how to use their instruments, maybe I can be convinced. First song is so good, but things go downhill a little from there. This is a 3.5, rounded up.
I want to start off my review by saying I do not like this and it is not my jam. In part because the singer just lacks any tonality and just sings in the same monotone the entire time. However, there came a moment in this album where I realized that he wasn't changing his tone, but his intensity. And that made it more interesting again.
this was genuinely a ton of fun. I think what I've been waiting for honestly
Fugazi were omnipresent in the local DIY scene in pretty much every town and city in the early-mid 00s. Certainly were in my town anyway. If you weren’t into Fugazi, you were gonna struggle with many local gigs. Luckily I quite liked Fugazi and still do. Been a long time since I listened to this record and I probably enjoyed it more years ago. Dont get me wrong, it’s still great, and yet another huuuugely influential record on the list. Perfect blend of noise and meaning, and still sounds fresh. But I think I prefer 13 Songs. Or at least I do now. 4.5
Really want to love Fugazi, Ian MacKaye is the most legit person in music and they are so influential on loads of my favourite bands. This album particularly sounds like early Cursive. Still feel like they are in the good but not great category, feel like such a heathen. Maybe it hasn't clicked yet and you need to hear 40 tracks to get it, like olives. But I still don't like olives and I'm yet to love Fugazi, so maybe I never will.
Fugazi are a band I've heard of a lot, but never given a listen to and didn't know anything about. Much more hardcore and punk than I was expecting, which makes sense given the minor threat connection which I wasn't aware of. I didn't think it was all of the same quality, but it was all at least good if not better. I think I preferred the more hardcore sounding ones. Reminded me (or voice versa) of rancid or similar. Think my favourites were merchandise and break in Overall really good and I'll be back 4.5
Can definitely tell this is an incredibly influential album. Very ahead of its time, sounds kinda like if you mixed Modest Mouse with Red Hot Chili Peppers (heavier of the Modest Mouse though) and one of the singers were Jello Biafra from the Dead Kennedys and maybe a little Beastie Boys style vocals here and there too, haha. I enjoyed it though, moreso when they were in their post-hardcore sound as opposed to a more standard punk sound. Will have to listen again.
3.5
I really liked Piccioto songs the most in fact a lot. Some of Mackay songs were to screamy for me, but there were a few of those I dug pretty well. I actually liked this more than I thought I would. At times it's kinda punk meets grunge, even though the big grunge breakthrough hadn't happened yet. They must have had their ear to the ground 8.4 ★★★★
Not the biggest fan of the screamy vocals, but have learned to appreciate it more with time. I like the playing on this album a lot. 4 stars
A band I always mean to give more time to.
oh hell yeah, love fugazi love what they stand for and love the album
Good album.
Love the pace of the drums and bass, provides a great energy to the songs. Can really see why the band is held in such high regard. Powerful lyrics delivered well with a great energy.
4.5/5
Really enjoying Fugazi at the moment. 2 decades too late lol
I kinda like it. It's what I expect from Punk. Also, it's short, so the constant driving snare drum doesn't go on for an hour and a half.
Better than I thought
Tight production, no filler. This album is great, and Fugazi only got better from here.
Hadn't really listened to Fugazi before so this was a great introduction. Sounds like a nightmare soundtrack to our times. Great, angry, and righteous.
Great album, not as rough/punky as I thought they would be
Fun and energetic. Didn't know these guys before, but I enjoyed this album.
Even for someone not really into post-hardcore, Repeater is a familiar album and for good reasons. Historical impact aside, the record is packed to the brim with energetic tracks and equal attitude.
Legendary band, legendary record. If you haven’t already you should definitely go read up on the history of Fugazi.
The instrumentation and sound is amazing. riffs are amazing. Singing is very punk-esque, even thought the instrumentals feel like much more. I feel like they would be insane to see live. Favourite songs: all of them. Overall around 8/10 (so close to 9)
I know Fugazi influenced many bands I like, but I never actually listened to an album or song of theirs. Really enjoyed it, especially the first half of this album. 4*
Pretty good. Enjoyed it.
Heard it before. Fugazi were my number 1 artist last year so listening to this album again just felt like any other day. My 2nd or 3rd fave album from them 4/5
Turnover 4 Repeater 3.3 Brendan #1 3.5 Merchandise 3.5 Blueprint 3.7 Sieve-Fisted Find 3.5 Greed 3.3 Two Beats Off 3.6 Styrofoam 3.6 Reprovisional 3.5 Shut the Door 4.1 Score: 3.6
pronouncing "shoegaze" like "fugazi"
4 stars
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this. I've heard of this band a million times but I don't own any of their records, and I haven't sat down and listened to any of their stuff before now. I'm going to give it four stars with room for growth.
Dude Repeater is such a banger of an album. I've widely dismissed it for some reason, which is a crime in itself, but what's even worse is that I DID listen to it a while back and STILL stood by that opinion. At its core, rudimentary and angry punk, so to say, with some very passionate delivery, and tons of inspiration in each song. Turnover and Repeater have a memorable riff to them, with a great rhythm backbone, and songs like Blueprint and Shut The Door evoke the emotional side of punk. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Really enjoyed but the vocal wore me down after awhile. 4.5
Fugazi, though never my go to, were my favourite bands’ favourite band. It starts in early 2003 with Finch’s “Letters To You” and Funeral for a Friend’s “This Years Most Open Heartbreak”. Then it’s The Used’s “Blue and Yellow” and “Maybe Memories”, back to FFAF for “Juneau” and “Escape Artists…”, over to Glassjaw, Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Alexisonfire, My Chemical Romance, then Underoath, Saosin, Blood Brothers, Daniel Striped Tiger, across to Modern Life Is War, Converge … And then, when not even the production line on MySpace could keep up with my appetite for faster, heavier, sadder fare it was back in time, hunting down the primal scene of the hurt: Saetia, Cap n’Jazz, Drive Like … Jehu, Neil Perry, American Football, old Converge and a thousand bands listened to by less than a thousand people (A New Kind of American Saint?). Which is to say, for 23 years now I’ve been, sometimes before anything else, an emo. And while a person could fill a day debating the term “emo” and how it functions within the specific context of a person’s musical preferences (see: the members of Fugazi), I’d rather not. Instead, I’d rather put on record the gratitude I feel to Ian, Greg, Joe and Brendan for their contribution to the genre we broadly know as “post hardcore” – a giant stylistic leap forward in the history of punk rock that carried hardcore and post with it and turned the mix into something infinitely fecund and genuinely thrilling. “Repeater” is full of ideas on their way to becoming the tropes. Angular guitar lines – some reminiscent of Gang of Four, with whom Fugazi share a particular art punk sensibility – paired with choruses that The Buzzcocks would have been proud of. A fondness for rhythmic ostinato that cycles through four bars, often used to deepen the melody through a song (or to develop a sense of weightlessness when the cycle breaks). Stop-start dynamics that open up spaces to be filled by swooping and frantic runs of octave chords up and down the fret boards. Interchanging, interweaving vocals layered atop a tight but expressive rhythm section that offers its own, more subtle style of call and response. (Listen to 2003’s “Seven Years” by Saosin, potentially the most hyped post hardcore song ever released, to hear how embedded these tropes were to become in 00s alternative music). Technically, Fugazi ranks among the most talented groups ever to have played punk of any description; how effortlessly they pull disparate points of influence – a couple of decades of punk, yeah, but also rock, dub, reggae – into a cohesive, dynamic sound set the standard for millions of genre hopping, genre inventing punks to come. The songs on Repeater showcase this fantastically. There are as many grooves as there are bombastic pit-baiting, jump around clashes of sound; as many rumbling drum-led attacks as there are quiet moments where the vocals stand, intimately, almost alone. It’s hard to précis such a legacy without lapsing into fawning hyperbole, so I’ll keep the scale small and say that when it comes to my musical taste, it wouldn’t be far off to characterise it as songs that strive to recreate, build on and reinvent the feeling of “Sieve-Fisted Find”. Fugazi is simply the first word in post hardcore; a band whose influence is probably still under-acknowledged (received wisdom is it’s always been OK to like Fugazi, but not necessarily the bands they inspired). No matter, though – despite the protestations of smug parents and the magazines and cultural critics that sound like them, none of this was ever just a phase. Blame Fugazi.
Oh, at times I thought I was listening to the Gang of Four. Not a bad album, but it did seem a bit derivative.
Lol, i accidentally don't listen previous album(The Madcap Laughs Syd Barrett) and give review about this album. My bad. I wish i can rewrite my review(however i think, score would be remained same). Second try: i more like instrumental in this album that singer. Drums and guitar is exceptional.
I don’t know why I was expecting this to be electronica, but it was a pleasant surprise! Angry, punky, original.
Good to see some Fugazi on here but they really missed the ball if the list does not include The Argument or 13 Songs
Music was pretty good. Not a big fan of the vocals but it was mostly listenable. I would not put this in my main vein of listening.
I get it but I didn’t care.
I enjoyed this more than I expected. You can tell this would have been a great concert.
I loved how hard this went. Riffs were incredible. Bass hit really well, vocals were just what they needed to be, excellent production, great songwriting. This was really pretty good and I enjoyed the whole thing. Not a big phan of the instrumentals, but very well done. 4/5
4.5/5
Fugazi is great
Sounds like some other bands I like. Has an angry edge to it. Good.
4.5/5. This is so sick, DIY punk is fucking amazing. They capture the spirit perfectly.
Fugazi kicks ass. This is their debut album, although others that would follow are arguably better than this one. This one is more raw and less polished than those. This sounds like a group of college guys who can jam got together and made some angry punk/rock/hard rock music. Gives me serious punk vibes but I wouldn't call it that completely. Maybe post-punk if that's a genre? Anyways, don't sleep on this, you'll like it. 3.75/5
A solid release. Slowed down hardcore with lots of warm tones.
Entraînant, accrocheur et agréable à l'écoute, véritable précurseur du rock des années 1990 et 2000 que j'allais tant aimer
Some really interesting things going on here musically. But the vocals over top are so offputting it is hard to actually enjoy. I still mostly did, though.
I thought this was pretty damn awesome. Would revisit and also check out some of their other stuff
Can see myself really getting into Fugazi
REPEATER! 🎶 REPEATER! 🎶 REPEATER! 🎶
Reading about the history of Fugazi was a wild ride. One thing is clear though - respect for their stance and morals, which probably is unprecedented in music industry. The album itself is a bit up and down for me, starting super strong with a great opening song "Turnover", but then dipping in energy with "Repeater". Overall very interesting album, amazing piece of trivia, pretty good music.
Not sure why I never gave Fugazi an actual listen and just wrote them off bc it wasn't "hardcore punk", which is what I'm used to from Ian after being a big Minor Threat fan. This album is really good and I enjoyed every other if not all the songs. Pretty much no skips in its entirety. Fav Tracks: "repeater" "merchandise" "two beats off"
Great
Solid album. I could tell how Fugazi influenced 90s grunge bands.
Long been on my list of 'bands I'll probably like when I get around to them'. I like the janky vibe, a few huge tunes on there too, might give do a full discography listen sometime
A prickly album, forcing the anger and aggression of punk inwards and spewing it back out in complicated and compartmentalized form. A little unfriendly, but pretty rewarding. Best song: Shut the Door
I was introduced to Fugazi a few years back and become a fan of their sound. This is the kind of music that's perfect for that frustrating work day and or day at the gym. Spend some time checking out their live performances from back in the day. Have to say, I would love to see these guys live. The album was solid from start to finish. Spotify then kicked into my heavier punk stuff and generally made the entire day of music a good one. I am going to have to take a much deeper into these guys music! Already have a few songs downloaded , but definitely need to check out more. Very good album. 4
I know 13 Songs pretty well but hadn’t heard this before. It holds up
Would ideally have gone 4.5 Great record, reminds me of my teens.
definitely will relisten.
Really liked it
Solid
This is one I'd not put on as an album, but enjoy as a track or two now and then. And you can't fault their work ethic - do what you want, when you want, don't work with big corporations, believe in your fans.
Repeater is a classic album by Fugazi. I have to make an effort to enjoy their music, mostly because I associate them with some bad memories. But setting that aside, I can still appreciate what they bring to the table. Their energy and musicianship make for a solid listen.
a classic
This is probably their easiest record to get into. Some of their other records are quite boring. This has enough variation to keep it interesting. It was very influential. I grew up with this. I like it a lot, but it should have been 30 minutes max. Not every song needs to be there. Favorite song: turnover.
Lots of bands I like pull inspo from this. Really cool
This is my shit.
Nice little album. Maybe not the most original, but good sound and well put together.
Kind of a slow burner, the complexity takes time to reveal itself, but once it clicks it’s very impressive. This band sounds so tight. The songs are also not immediately in your face like Minor Threat, but the snarl is there and it’s more brutal. A good one to keep coming back to.
I never listened to this band before. This was a solid record that I will revisit in the future. I will check out their other stuff as well.
Pretty good! Definitely worth another listen, was bobbing my head in a very cliche manner the whole way through.
Gute Energie. Bereicherung
Not terrible I guess
I went into this album expecting something frenetic and unrelentingly angry, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much more nuanced it turned out to be. That’s not a criticism—if anything, it made the album far more listenable and enjoyable than I had anticipated. The dual vocal approach is a standout feature, adding depth and contrast to the songs. Joe Lally’s bass work often takes center stage, and it’s a joy to hear. His playing reminds me of Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers—not necessarily in style, but in the way the bass feels like a driving force rather than just a background element. Whether one influenced the other or it’s purely coincidental, it’s a cool parallel. One particular highlight is the way the instruments build at the end of Brendan #1. It’s so effective that it made me wonder if they ever followed it up with a Brendan #2. The way the songs flow into each other across the album creates an immersive experience, making it feel like more than just a collection of tracks. This isn’t just “better than expected.” It’s genuinely impressive, and I’ll likely be revisiting it in the future. Standout Track: Blueprint Score: 4/5
Fugazi are interesting in that they are clearly influenced by early punk, yet they sort of bridge that sound into something more modern whilst keeping some of the hardcore "edge". Keep in mind that this record just barely predates some of the flagship rock records of the early 90's such as "Nevermind" and "Ten". Nothing about this group was really "standard" musically, with their chunky drum & groovy bass rhythms mixed with the dual lead guitars & vocals from MacKaye and Picciotto. All while juggling some big and taboo topics. Teetering the line of 3.5 for me, but I'll round up. I can respect rock groups with this kind of passion in their music.
Out of all the hard rock acts I have heard, I have for some reason never listened to Fugazi. While I’m certain 13 Songs has to be on this list (I hope it is or I look really stupid), I see that this album is just as highly regarded. Truth be told, I think this is my favorite kind of punk: high energy, messy but organized, loud. I think I really enjoy this post-hardcore stuff. The only thing against it is that some of the tracks do get a little repetitive. But I overall really enjoyed this. Favorite track: Turnover Other hits: Merchandise, Sieve-Fisted Find, Shut the Door
ah mlk fugazi da galera repeater é bom demais, dá saudade do cansaço juvenil escutando esse
Badass.
This is honestly like a really good complete album. I feel like a lot of times punk and punk adjacent albums can just be like a collection of songs, but this album flows really, really well. There also aren't really any misses on the album. Not all the songs are great, but they're all at least pretty good. Some of the reviews that I saw about the album complain about 90s punk feeling same-y, but this one to me stands out for me as being better than most of them. Favorite Song(s): Brendan 1, Merchandise
Definitely sounds ahead of it's time. A cool blend of punk, alternative, and rock.
Great stuff! I'm not usually into hardcore but this was much more nuanced aesthetically and emotionally. They really found a perfect middle-ground between punk, post-rock and noise rock and explored it in quite a compelling way. It's punk in it's mature stage - Repeater retains the angst that's inherent to the genre but makes it more complex and introspective in a way that reminded me of a more aggessive version of Spiderland by Slint. I certainly can't wait to explore the catalogue of this band further, a great find!
Thank you Ian
1 2 THREEEE REPEATER Yeah really nice angry album, very enjoyable. Fav Songs: Repeater
When I saw the genre I was bemused: post-hardcore? But I understand now. It's still shouty and angry, but it gives us time to breathe. There's space, there's a bit of funk, some variation. It's got some great crunchy riffs and is just really good to listen to. When they get thrashing it's fun, instead of that relentless, numbing sound you get from Black Flag et al.
This type of punk is the type of punk I like! Enjoyable, noisy, short songs. I really liked it!
Post hardcore but an early alt rock sound with intricate riffs and driving guitar rhythms. Very impressive debut indie album that helped rock take the next step in it's evolution. Standouts are the title track and "Merchandise".
Sí! Este es el ruido que hacía falta. No esos Pixies, Sonic Youth o MBV en los que el afán por el ruido les hace olvidar lo esencial del rock & roll: melodías y actitud.
This reminds me of the time I was on tour with my band mate and great friend Len Houmous and we were looking at bed linen downstairs in Beatties. We couldn’t believe our eyes. We looked up and who should be looking at the crystal glasses, all of Fugazi! Len shouted ‘ey lads, with your ticket sales, shouldn’t you be in Debenhams?’ They just replied ‘Ken, bloody Chutney!’ We all laughed. We reminisce about this a lot and it still makes us smile. But really what are the chances that two globally renowned groups of post hardcore pioneers being in a House of Fraser in Hemel Hempstead? 4.3
I liked it. Nothing too attention grabbing on the first listen though.
Thoughts before listening: Fugazi was such an important band and for a 90s kid that fancied himself as some hipster punk indie guy. While I wasn't actually any of those things, the music I discovered during that period has stuck with me throughout my adult life. This is an album I owned at the time, and while I don't necessarily think its Fugazi's best, I am glad to have a reason to revisit this today. Review: Interestingly enough, I remember not really liking this album all that much when I first bought it. I was more into pop punk at the time, so the lack of sing along melodies just didn't appeal as much to me. I also remember thinking that the song "Repeater" was annoying. The only song I really latched onto at that time was "Sieve Fisted Find". This opinion has changed over the years as my tastes have evolved. I now appreciate that Fugazi combined the aggression of punk rock with a more technically proficient musical ability. There is a jazz quality to the musicianship here and often the details within the music are as exciting as the words being shouted. 4-star album for me mainly because 13 Songs is their 5-star album.
Overall: 8/10 This is such a great album! The guitar work is so interesting and the classic hardcore vocals sound amazing. I feel like this'll just get better with subsequent hearings. Fav Song: Repeater Least Fav Song: Two Beats Off
Favourite tracks: blueprint; turnover; Brendan 1; repeater
gött häng. det var nån låt som jag fastnade för men nu minns jag inte vilken det var. aja, skit ner dig.
Pretty fun punk album
I feel the same way about this as Marko feels about that Stooges album, one track you adore surrounded by a bunch of other good tracks. Definitely front heavy but a lot more tracks I'll return to this time upon returning to the album. I think The Jesus Lizard captured the vibe this album was going for but just noisier and better on LIAR but still a good album in its own right. 7/10 Fav tracks - Turnover, Repeater, Merchandise, Blueprint, Two Beats Off, Styrofoam, Reprovisional, Shut the Door, Joe 1 Least Fav - None really
Interestingly cool
Cool album. Reminds me of Ten, but a little more raw/hardcore? I can hear Turnstile gaining some form of inspiration from this album when they made "Glow On". 7/10
Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would - couldn’t tell you what post-hardcore is about, but apparently I like it.
Usually not exactly my thing, but this album goes hard.
Punk banger
Great album with addictive elements.
Truly remarkable and such an obvious inspiration for entire generes
I can hear how this band influenced a lot of bands I loved in high school. Feels important for my music appreciation :)
3,8
Repeater is an interesting listen. It's also Hi-Fi and clear which makes it stand out from a lot of punk and predecessors. I think it delivers on an interesting baseline of pushing past punk and making something that is less accessible and more raw without sounding chaotic or disjointed. This is probably my favorite album in this genre so I'll rate it favorably despite it not being my style. I like what one reviewer says about listening to it while moving. It's a kinetic album and you can feel it in your bones.
This is classic 90's rock, and you can feel the transition from the late 80's to the very start of grunge in here. "Blueprint" in particular seems to be the proto version of every radio rock song of the decade, funnily enough. The whole album is hard enough to fit in to the aggressive mindset of the grunge trend but not so over the top that it goes in to metal and hardcore of the same era. It's angry, but not too angry. It's a really great blend. "Shut the door" is a good example of the musical tropes that would continue for other bands later. Namely the extremely quiet bassline and drums to screaming vocals and heavy guitar. Obviously not unique to a style, but the ending reminded me so much of "The Wind Below" by Rage against the Machine. "Merchandise" has such a weird chord major chord progression and the switch to the chorus is so different that it knocks you backwards; it's cool songwriting. Another review mentioned that this is music to actively do something to, not just to play in the background. It's true, this album makes me want to throw my idiot computer out the window and go fuck around outside, and I always appreciate an album that does that.
There's some great playing here. I'd never listened to Fugazi before but I had heard of them. Solid album and really great energy and execution. I can see me relistening to this.
In my youth I found my self doing more activities that pair with this music. Now days this would be a great lawn mowing album. Musically there is some cool stuff scattered throughout this. I will probably try and give this another listen down the road.
Really good album, could see myself listening to it again. Listened to it two times through.
I am a little younger than the original fans of Fugazi are but I am old enough to have been a fan of countless bands that are obviously inspired by them, most notably At The Drive-in. I like their music and I really respect their dedication to what they believe in, DIY and the humanitarian/vegan things. I appreciate and respect the impact their music had on so many bands, but I would rather listen to the ones they influenced, their sound has something that turns me off and I can't quite figure out what it is.
I enjoyed this, but the vocalist was a little lacking. I think replaying it made me like him more. "Merchandise" makes me think of Offspring. They could probably do a serviceable cover of it. The instrumental "Brendan #1" was great. The title track "Repeater"... I didn't totally get. I liked how all of the songs segued together. Enjoyed this album a lot, will definitely come back to it.
I’m really really torn because I want to give this a 3.5. The music is appealing but his voice is not. I can see how they were influential. I can see this one very slowly growing on me
Fugazi is a band I've been meaning to dig into for a long time being that they're considered pioneers in the punk scene, and this record does not disappoint! With a unique blend of the classic punk edge, pleasant-sounding melodies, and even some groovy funk elements, it's easy to see why Fugazi are highly regarded. Definitely a new artist on my list to dig deeper into because of this selection. Notable Tracks: - Turnover - Brendan #1 - surprisingly groovy instrumental - Blueprint - Sieve-Fisted Find - Greed - Styrofoam 8/10
Fico, ma seriamente il rock sta stufando.
Important to punk but maybe not to me
Loved this, clearly influenced a lot of the alternative rock music I like. It’s not a Perfect album but seems groundbreaking, 4 stars.
Heavy in a good way
Fugazi is another band for whatever reason has been on my radar, I like everything I've read about them, but haven't listen to. This sounds like life-changing music and I wonder what if my life and music tastes would have been affected if I listened to Fugazi in 1990? Probably not much, but it would have opened up even more music I should have listened to and might have spurned a desire to see them live. Fast, energetic music, with crunchy guitars and screamy, passionately sung vocals by Ian MacKaye, that contains more hooks and melodies than I was expecting. I instantly like it and can't believe I haven't heard this sooner. This album will be on "repeater" on my streaming thing for days, guaranteed.
Surprised by this one. Never heard of the band. I really liked it! 4/5
I was always a casual fan of Fugazi's via my dad's record collection, but never dove into them too much. I know I really dig the debut EP, and after two listens, I like this one a good bit too. I generally prefer MacKaye's songs to Picciotto's, but think they're both worthy songwriters and frontmen at the end of the day. They strike a solid balance between abrasiveness and accessibility, and they're damn good instrumentalists to boot. 4/5
I really enjoy Fugazi. Some of the songs are top notch. This album doesn't quite get into 5/5 territory though. 4.5/5
Great. Not as good as 13 songs, but great Low 4?
Whatever Kevin rates it at, he’s wrong because Peter said so.
while i had heard of fugazi, for whatever reason i had never listened to any of their music before. it looks like i am going to have to take a deeper dive. great album.
Amazing - I was immediately impressed and intrigued by this.
Loved the ending track of the original release of this LP, bleak.
I like MacKaye's vocals more than Picciotto's. This is fun stuff, though I think I enjoy Minor Threat a smidge more.
Fico, ma seriamente il rock sta stufando.
Yeah, pretty good. No idea why this album title sticks in my head so much. Will probably get better with a few more listens.
Words never used to describe Fugazi: Sellouts, Pandering, Commercial, Lazy, Corporate, Mainstream. This one is about as accessible as they get. A fantastic gateway to the wonderful world of Indie Punk.
Energy
Favorite Tracks: Shut the Door Merchandise Repeater
cool stuff. I admire Ian MacKaye for a lot of things – being vegan, Minor Threat, the straight edge philosophy and mostly just unapologetically doing whatever the fuck he wants to do. this album is a bit repetitive (it definitely lives up to its name), and though I imagine it all would fall into place in the right context, it doesn't always translate when listening to the record. I listened to it 2.5 times to try and do it justice and I'd rate it 3.5 – but for some really cool songs like Merchandise and for the legend that Ian is, I may just round it up.
I enjoyed this a lot. That’s it but I liked it
These passed me by at the time. I remember some cool kids at college had Fugazi t-shirts, I think, but how did I not know this album? It's great! Maybe I didn't/wouldn't have dug the punkness back then? I did keep thinking of Jim Howick saying 'I'm a shouty man.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7ZkNvMMAfw I do think I missed a trick here, though. Glad to discover now. Cheers, 101-dude.
I’ve never listened to Fugazi before and admit I didn’t know anything about them. I knew the name, but I’m embarrassed to admit that I thought their music was a totally different oeuvre. I had them in my mind akin to Yanni. My mistake for not giving them a chance before. This is right up my alley. Awesome stuff.
4.3 - This was really cool. The right amount of heavy aggression. Fave track was blueprint and definitely going to check out more.
Good first impression, as I haven't theard Fugazi before. I like the active drums, which are very good, as is the general musicianship is general. On top of this, I like how the album's produced. You can hear each instrument clearly, which is not easy with all that's going on in each song. Brendan #1's a great instrumental. Liked songs added: - Merchandise - Shut the Door
i really like this album, and it's foundational to so much music that i ended up loving through the late 90s and early 00s (and beyond). simple and to the point, great interplay between the instruments.
regrettably, juan was right. this slaps.
This was a little much for the kind of day I was having today, but it's not bad!
Enjoyed it but nothing stood out
Funny coincidence, I just started looking deeper into Fugazis discography and started with this one, really good stuff
Exactly at the midpoint between Beastie Boys and Nirvana.
Loud, exciting and exhilarating. It's the perfect music to accompany an action scene in a movie or hang out at the local skateboard park.
I'm glad I finally got to give Fugazi a proper listen, only 30-something years too late. Very 90s but good stuff
I've listened to Fugazi's 13 Songs compilation album a bunch of times. Hadn't listened to Repeater before, pretty good, plenty of punky beats to mosh around to!
Solid record.
This is a great post-hardcore album. I'm sure it influenced a lot of musicians especially in the following Grunge era. Great basslines and a great instrumentation all together.
Pretty good.
Sweet album and a great drum sound
foundational bit of music history. ian mackaye is the puppet master behind most alt genres. like a solid 80 something
I had only ever listened to 13 songs. This is a bit rough for the early morning when I normally listen to my albums of the day. But a solid 4 stars for the lunch break listening period.
I especially like this band's drum & bass. I dig it. Favorites: Turnover, Repeater, Brendan #1, Two Beats off, Reprovisional.
Incredibly clean punk album that fells no less raw despite the lack of noise. very legible all around, but especially in the bass department. Managing to be forward without being showy. All tied together with little to no pause between track.
Never actually listened to Fugazi before...what a great album.
You are not what you own. I didn't understand what Fugazi was when I was younger and discovering music. That's a damn shame.
Was what I expected from Fugazi even though I had never listened to a whole album. Nice bass grooves. 4/5
first listen perhaps style over substance, but the style is good and it's interesting to hear post hardcore from the birth of the grunge era
Fun Western vibes
Insanely talented musicians. Especially for punk rock. Only weakness is the vocalist who doesn’t quite do it for me. If I had any history with this group I’d prolly love the album more.
Not usually a fan of anything where the lead singer does a lot of screaming, but the instrumentals here were pretty dope and kinda saved this for me. Also pretty unique compared to the rest of these albums. This one has grown on me
war ok.
It was really fun and I really liked the instruments
Solid
An interesting record full of intense energy, I found the bass play particularly wondrous. Massive respect for its influence and definitely going on my must-have list! [0091/1001]
Will revisit.
Well, that's a great discovery. Never heard of Fugazi before but that was really enjoyable listen.
Very raw and angry with some heavy subject matter. I really liked it and fully understand why Fugazi inspired so much of the music that I love. I can only imagine the energy they would create live, probably a much better live band than in recorded form. The album really builds for me. ‘Brendan #1’ drives it on at a furious pace and the album gets better from there. A solid 4.
This is great, really it is.both ahead and very much of its time. Very punk. Very musical at the same time. Not for everyone, if you click with it you'll love it. If you dont it's just noise.
Pretty solid punk album. The playing has a lot of energy to it. You can tell all the players are very in sync with each other throughout. Cool usage of harmonics on the guitars and the singers have perfect energy for a punk band. The songs are not immediately catchy for me like a lot of great punk is but I think they sit with you longer for that reason.
Is good
I knew of this band but hadn't heard them before. It sounds like a missing link between punk and 90s rock/grunge. The screamy vocals have now been done to death and don't do much for me. But the music is refreshingly complex and tight.
Not a big "noise rock" fan but when I give it enough time it kind of grows on me. I can see where people can really get into it.
Need to listen to this again but solid post punk. I always get them and Gang of Four mixed up.
Lovely stuff 4
I never like Fugazi as much as I feel like I should as a late Gen-X white guy.
I dug this. Every song didn't hit home, but most of them did. They sounded like a nice blend of Big Black and Slint with some Greg-Dulli-esque vocals on top. I also enjoyed the instrumentals. This seems like an album that will grow on me.
This album rules. That is all.
Was already quite familiar with this one. I've always liked it, but never quite loved it. I think I would like it more if just Ian sang. However, I was really feeling it this time, so maybe I'm over some hump? 4/5
Wait, I didn’t review this? Classic post-hardcore, I can see this as a contender for Fugazi’s best, although I have a softer spot for Kill Taker and appreciate their last LPs. Still good shit though. B+
Tiene muchas bangers rocanroleras
Absolute belter of an album. My eyes lit up when this one came up. Favourite songs are "blueprint" and "shut the door"
The nostalgia is strong with this one, so for that reason, 4 stars.
Liked this. Quite influential. Was only familiar with a couple of Fugazi songs before listening to this but now am willing to explore them further. Solid album.
8/10 pretty good! they brought a unique spice to punk that I really appreciate!
yeah this album was pretty cool. i've never really listened to this sort of music but it was full of energy and this album was just balls to the wall nonstop. not to mention the musicianship is very good. very fun, very angsty, not generally my cup of tea, but definitely a fun listen.
Ok.
Grunge-rock-punk. Me ha gustado.
Keeps it simple for the most part, which make the deviations and trills stand out - the drums on Brenda #1, for example. Angry, grounded, good shit.
The band’s name was familiar to me but I don’t think I had heard their music before. Super intense, harder driving and more thrash-like than my usual fare, and interesting blend of elements including hip-hop…and real high-level skills on their instruments. I thought it was very good and interesting to my ears.
I’ve been blessed with three incredible debut albums in a row (ArchAndroid, Blue Lines and now Repeater) A post-hardcore classic with so much groove behind the aggression, this hits so hard but feels so lush at the same time, a truly amazing balance resulting in a distinctive and magnetic sound
Sounds like early grunge, a bit of punk and a bit of rock too. Great album that kinda sums up the 90s. Loud and doesn't giving a fuck.
Excellent
4/5
easy 4
Really great! Instrumentation is fantastic, the bass is really killer. Drummer is great too!
4/5. It's hard to get punk right but this one slams it out of the park. I don't remember it too much but it's not for lack of songwriting. I felt the rage and anger. Also, the songs are catchy as well so that's a plus.
This feels like God himself came down from Heaven with the blueprint for the greatest album of all time in his hand, but got mugged and the blueprint ended up in the hands of a drunk crackhead. The music fucking sucks ass, but in a good way. I don't know how that works.. it just does.
Fuck yeah
It’s just very in its lane, classically executed punk rock. Good vibes, I liked. I appreciated the straightforwardness of it. Familiar with Fugazi already, but they haven’t rewritten the book for me or anything like that. You just get exactly what you paid for from them.
Good sound, good energy
Good solid album
4 stars, very solid
I had to listen to this album a couple of times, but I think overall it is on this list because it links the hardcore/post-hardcore scene to grunge and what would become alternative rock. The first half of the album was the strongest. The musicianship was good if not a bit jarring, and the vocals felt similarly though they fit the music well. There were moments in the album that would have been at home on a 2000s alternative rock record and I'm not sure if that a good thing or not.
I will admit it I have zero idea what makes an album good in the sense that you have to listen to it in your lifetime. I have favorite songs, albums, and artists but after all these years of privately enjoying music, I can't explain to anyone in an explicit or genuine way what makes an album great. I listen to most albums because i consider them cool and i want to be part of the crowd that enjoys "good music." I have several Fugazi's albums saved in apple music for a long time, and perhaps listened through them a couple times as well. However, I can't get into most of their stuff. I can't hear what's good about albums like this anymore. I appreciate it not being formulaic or repetitive like contemporary pop songs but what separates this album from the previous ones that i have reviewed? i don't know. I am genuinely lost and i wasn't expecting this project triggers yet another existential crisis in myself.
4.5
Seminal is over used in reviews but it's appropriate here
Post-Hardcore Innovatoren mit gelegentlich etwas zu dünnem Gesang. 3-4
Good fucking record. Wish I found it when I was 10 in the early 90's. Can hear their obvious influence on countless modern and early aughts bands.
ok
4.5
Love Fugazi
Hilariously, I had to listen to this on repeat before I came to appreciate it.
More fugazi on this list please.
I love Repeater and guaranteed every time I listen to a Fugazi record I think, “dang the bass and drums sound so goooood!”
Listened to it 3 times round! Feel like studio time is slightly wasted on these guys as sounds like a garage and a 4 track, but think overall it’s better for it.
this was the first time i've ever really listened to fugazi and now i want to see them live. everything seems so raw yet so precise, especially the guitar riffs. you can just feel the energy in the room when you listen to these songs.
Instrumentaal best lekkere punkrock, maar de stem is niet om aan te horen en vrij schreeuwerig. Na een paar nummers wordt het heel eentonig. 4*
Stevig. Niet super goed, maar wel een tof album
Grunge-ily energetic with enough variation in theme and vocals to keep me interested in what was coming next throughout. I liked it.
I picked this CD up in a record shop back in 2021 or so because I thought it was rare. I was wrong, but I was also left with my introduction to the amazing band, Fugazi. This is classic DC Punk, and in my opinion you’re hard pressed to find a better band from DC than Fugazi. Ian MacKaye also founded Dischord Records which was pretty cool too. 4/5.
Good hard sound, makes me wanna fuck around a skate park (I don't skate). I can definitely see the influence on newer punk, grunge and hardcore bands and I appreciate it
3.5/5
Hardcore parkour
Wikipedia says this is 'post-hardcore', I like it, but probably not for background music! Saved tracks: Repeater, Brendan 1, Two Beats Off, Styrofoam, Break-In
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Turnover, Repeater, Merchandise, Break-in
