Kings Of The Wild Frontier

The lat 70s, early 80s were a wild and untamed era of musical experiments, and one of the more interesting ones was Adam and the Ants (fronted by Goodie Two Shoes Adam Ant). This album however is probably best relegated to the late 70s, early 80s.

Never heard of them and didn’t particularly like them

I had a wild time with this. I was climbing in the car after visiting my mom and she asked what I was listening to. I said "Adam and the Ants," described the project and went on my way. Halfway home, I had this inescapable waking nightmare where I get into a horrific crash and my mom takes up listening to my last album as a way of mourning. Then at some point she becomes familiar enough to kinda dig it, and thinks of me fondly while nodding her head to "ant music for sex people, sex music for ant people." In summary, I did not have a great time. The apparent "Burundi beat," however, did remind me of the excellent Naked Eyes song "Always Something There to Remind Me" and I learned it's actually a cover of a very good 1964 version by Lou Johnson. So there is a silver lining.

Didn’t find this one too enjoyable. Felt like it was more popular in the 80s than it would be now. Some of the songs lyrically are quite bad. The sound is just a very strong 80s sense which was decent I guess but I don’t see myself revisiting this one. 3.8/10

Their fashion was more interesting than their sound

It's fun and there's some good songs (especially the run of Ants Invasion/Killer in the Home/KotWF) but there's a lot of filler especially towards the end The US version with Physical would probably get a 3, but it's not on the UK version so a 2 it is

I've heard of Adam Ant. But not Adam & The Ants. I wondered, was I wrong the whole time and there is no Adam Ant? Just some guy named Adam with some ants? No, it turns out he really is named Adam Ant. But none of the other members of Adam & The Ants are ants. Why not Andy Ant or Lester Ant? Maybe they weren't as committed to the gimmick. Because Adam Ant was certainly committed to the gimmick. Which was a pirate gimmick? But what do pirates have to do with ants? A legit pirate named Adam Ant would not inspire much terror on the high seas. The makeup and silly facial hair is ok - see Jack Sparrow and De Niro's Captain Shakespeare. I just don't think ants wouldn't make for good pirates. I wanted to hate "Kings of the Wild Frontier." But they sounded like they were just having so much fun. Extra star for embracing it, even if it sucked.

Do you ever wonder if Zack Attack (the Saved By The Bell friends’ imaginary pop band in season 4 episode 22’s Rockumentary) actually did exist then broke up but Screech started a side project in 1980 instead of searching far and wide for the meaning of life from the High Geek? Weirdly, I did and I think this album is exactly how that would sound, like a parody of pop music in 1980. In some ways Saved By The Bell’s Rockumentary is a parody of the early 90s. There is waaaay too much color blocked clothing. Post Zack Attack break up Lisa was a US Gladiator, Lethal Lisa. Casey Kasem hosted the Rockumentary. And of course Zack Attack’s hits include too many rock ballads. In fact Screech, Kelly, and Slater demo a song in the studio to ego maniac Zack called School Is A Bore that sounds too much like this album (11:49 mark). 1980 side project Screech should have learned that it was terrible and never played it for 1991 Zack.

It must've been the historical context that made this album important, because I'm just not getting it out of context. British art-house post punk with an overtop smack of zeal that borders on being campy and self-satirizing but could also just be a leadman who can't help from being over the top.

It was an ok album. A little eccentric. A couple songs were recognizable, however, it is not an album I would listen to again.

Wtf happened to the second half

Silly and energetic throughout, but a little same and sometimes the dissonant parts of this album take me out.

I can imagine this was new at the time it came out and it is not that bad. But it was okay for one time. Wouldn’t return to this album probably.

Best Song: Dog Eat Dog. Punkish rolling beat with overlapping vocals. High energy. Worst Song: Don't Be Square (Be There). Elements of this sound like they are intending to sound bad, as if that amounts to punk rock. Absolutely inane lyrics too. Overall: Another album seemingly pulled from a very specific time and place in England that doesn't belong on this list. I easily could have died having never heard this.

I loved Adam Ant when I was young. But it was all about watching them perform the singles on Top of the Pops. not sure the album stands up.

Dog eats dog kicks it off and is a really good song. After that everything's just flat and directionless. The pirate song is pretty fun though.

The Adam Ant entry on this list needs a recount. To my ears, the album that should be on the list is Adam Ant's "Friend Or Foe". Yes, that's the one with "Goody Two Shoes" as well as the title track, "Desperate But Not Serious", "Something Girl" and a great cover of The Doors' "Hello I Love You". It's full of absolute bangers. This album really has only one: "Antmusic". The rest of this is wildly inconsistent, and only hints and the magic Adam Ant would find on his solo work. An apt comparison to Adam Ant and Adam and the Ants would be David Johansen and the New York Dolls.

fun listen, a little too poppy for my taste, but interesting style

I have long wanted to appreciate this band, but their estimation by many as a "joke band" does ring a bit true for me. I was a big fan of his solo stuff when I was like 10 years old though. Also I appreciate his role in the punk and new wave movements, but this music falls into some hybrid category that just sounds too glam+gimmicky to me. I'll take Devo instead.

Adam tried to start a new music trend with his make-up and burundi drums and it's certainly the kind of thing the Brits would be all-in for in the 80s. Some of the tracks are catchy, but it's more style over substance.

Boy here's another album that didn't age well. I guess in the early 80s after Punk had run its course this was a bridge and precursor to New Wave. Thankfully it was a mercifully short bridge. Back then cultural appropriation wasn't a thing, but Adam and the Ants did it in spades with Burundi drums and Native American costumes, what a hot mess. Back in the 80s it may have been novel, but its too gimmicky for me now.

I remembered listening to this as a kid and enjoying it, either thats a false memory or it really hasn't aged well. Couple of hit singles and a lot of filler

Another new wave album! Unfortunately not my favorite new wave band, but they still have a lot to offer musically. I like the glam, weird and unconventional approach to these songs, it feels kind of wild (which suits the album title perfectly). The songs do get a bit repetitive though, and I found myself zoning out about halfway through each song. This album is decent and has good ideas, but I would definitely say its not the best of the new wave genre. I honestly don't have much more to say about it. This made me feel bad for only giving yesterday’s Donovan album 3 stars. Comparatively speaking, that was a masterpiece. Man, this album sucked. A couple of tracks weren’t total shit. But the rest was just absolute crap.

Disliked just about every aspect of this and it just kept getting worse. Really unpleasant time listening to this.

What is with all the New Wave music? Good lord I hate this and I'm one minute in. No. This is a joke. The Lawrence of Arabia segment is the best part of the album. This is one of the worst albums on the list. The amount of limited Spanish on late 70s (I'm looking at you The Clash)/early 80s British music is appalling. I would rather be listening to almost anything at this point. If I have to pick a favorite so far, I guess the title track is it. You may not like it now, but you will...written in 1980, still waiting. It has intelligible lyrics, music and reasonable length songs...those are the three factors keeping this from being the worst album on the list. Awesome...shouting out some Native American tribe names after referencing Geronimo earlier...get your own history UK.

First things first. I was not in the mood for this album today. When I saw it come up on the generator I laughed, never imagining anything by Adam Ant would be on the list. I knew them from the early days of MTV, but didn't care for their music at the time. All of that being said, I tried to go into it with the right frame of mind but never really could. As soon as the record started I was immediately put off by it. There were subtle reminders of artists I like, but the whole of it just got on my nerves. I listened as I was driving home from work and there was a lot of traffic on the roads which didn't help, but I think if I was enjoying what I was hearing it might've not mattered as much. There were a couple of songs I thought I might like, but then something (usually the vocals) would change my mind. This was a very unenjoyable listen.

I do not get it. I've always been a bit surprised that this group with their unconventional sound are a well known pop hit. I'm clearly missing something. It's quite rhythmicaly driven which is usually a huge plus for me. Unfortunately it just doesn't hit at all. If there's more Adam and the ants on the list I'll be curious to listen again

Half of it seems like random talking over some backbeat. Just got me angry halfway throughout as it never improved and seemingly got worse.

As much as I do very much like digging through the 1001 albums to hear challenge in its' entirety, I have to say there are quite a few duds all throughout the list, and Adam and the Ants' Kings of the Wild Frontier happens to be one of those dated duds. I don't know why this list has to keep picking very mediocre New Wave albums but it is pissing me off because there is some really solid New Wave out there, this author just doesn't know where to find it. This album feels so out of touch and very much a product of its' very flamboyant and over the top time period. I truly see nothing on this album worth noting in the current year of 2026 as relevant or even essential in any manner other than showcasing how poorly a lot of 80s antics have aged. What is the point of hearing this project other than to suffer?

New wave is not my thing. They kind of found an original twist with the percussions... 1982 best British album : without the historical context , it is difficult to comprehend...I can cknowledge the socio-political impact of this genre...but it does not please my ears.

Didn’t have the time to go all the way, and honestly, no motivation either. I tried to get a better grip on the impact of the “Burundi beat” on the post-punk scene, but even that wasn’t that interesting. Really not my cup of tea, it just goes all over the place with sometimes chaotic instrumentation that doesn’t click with me. A few good vibes here and there, but not enough to make me want to dig deeper, even though there were some promising punk roots

Guys what the heck. I'm pretty sure everyone in this band collectively shares a single brain cell. I mean to start off with this dude decides to take a stage name and chooses Adam Ant. Like what?! Why is that what you go with? Secondly, he names the band after himself, Adam and the Ants, which makes no sense as a name either. Then the cover art is just weird and I do not like him staring at me like that from the cover. Then we get to the music. It was bad. Nobody on the band has good vocals, the backup vocals are whack, the main vocals are whack, the lyrics are whack and repeated a thousand times, the instruments are whack. The drums were literally the only thing on this album I liked. Everything else was a hard pass and should've stayed and died in the U.K. Why'd you guys let this come over here? Why?

I saw the album cover and heard the first 10 seconds and thought it was just some gen X bullshit. After hearing the whole album, I actually think it’s just some gen X bullshit. However, I did enjoy it despite its temporal disability. I guess this is the point of the project; I got to enjoy a superb example of a genre I would never explore on my own. Five stars for the project. One star for whatever the fuck this is.

Cool drum sound in most of the songs, but repetitive track-to-track. Nice and swaggery, though it seems like that was the end of the inspiration. Unless you’re The Cars, New Wave singing is always the WORST. I could have been happy hearing “Dog Eat Dog” or “Feed Me to the Lions” in a playlist without ever listening to the whole record. Ugh. After reading the Wikipedia page I see that the drum sound is ripped uncredited from African musicians and the Native American fetishization stands out even more. Yuck.

Woof. This is bad art rock that seems like a bad copy of the B-52s without the camp. This should have stayed in the 80s where it belongs.

A truly disappointing album. Completely derivative of Here Come the Warm Jets era Brian Eno, but to the point of sounding like a bad cover band. Tribal drums cannot make this album more interesting, and only acted as silver lining to an otherwise repetitive and uninteresting mess. 1.4/5 -> 1/5

I think New Wave was a very forward-thinking music movement for it's time but this one didn't do it for me. I couldn't get past the pirate theme, a lot of the songs were just too juvenile and silly. However, I can see how someone would like a few songs on here, I just don't like the lyrics enough to ever get into them. It was more interesting than expected and I give them credit for doing something different but there's a fine line between odd and just plain wacky. "Feed Me to the Lions" so I don't have to hear this again, 1.45.

When I was a kid, I had a nasty boil on my leg that got infected. I couldn’t walk without severe pain for weeks and the thing kept oozing down into my socks. I would rather relive that experience than have to listen to this album again.

Ik neem Youri’s puntentelling over - 1 ster is een onvoldoende tot een 6. 2 sterren is een 7, etc. Adam and the Ants roept theatraliteit over zich af, al is het alleen al door de cover. Het album is early post punk, maar de echte kwaliteit en diepgang is soms ver te zoeken. Dat gezegd hebbende, is Antmusic best een powerhouse. De song red de plaat voor mij richting een mager 6je. Highlight: Antmusic Rating: 5,5/10

Na enig vooronderzoek had ik een onderbuikgevoel dat deze plaat all over de place zou zijn. En dat was het. Je merkt dat dit album een product is van de early period van new wave die Engeland, en later de rest van de wereld, zou overspoelen. Het was een natuurlijke tegenhanger van de serieuze punk/post-punk die de trend van de dag bepaalde. New wave bracht wat meer plezier in de charts, niet alleen door de gekscherende thema's en uplifting rhytmes en synths, maar ook zeker door de kledingstijl. Indianenschmink in combinatie met piratenkostuums bijvoorbeeld, waarom niet. Maar de moedergenres waren in de eerste periode van deze nieuwe golf nooit ver weg, zoals je ook hoort op dit album. Het is een eclectische mix van post-punk, glam rock, pop, en Burundese volksmuziek. Die laatste is niet te missen. Op 'Killer in the Home' hoor je zelfs nog even de legendarische rockabilly riff van Link Wray's 'Rumble'. Maar ondanks dat het een geinig voorbeeld is van de onvolwassen vorm van New Wave, vind ik het over het algemeen iets té onbesuisd. Ik vind de meeste stijlen waar dit album zijn inspiraties uithaalt op zich best nice, maar deze hyperactieve cocktail zet de verkeerde zintuigen op scherp. Het is een soort kinderdisco voor volwassenen, en toen het piratenlied 'Jolly Roger' langskwam knapte er iets in mijn prefrontale cortex. Adam and the Zeven Dwergen fluiten me echt een coma in bij dit nummer waardoor ik de laatste twee nummers gemist heb, for the better good. De moody Bauhaus-esque post-punk van 'Ants Invasion' en vooral de bouncy art rock van 'Antmusic' zijn de enige echt vermakelijke momenten. Ik waardeer de insteek wel, en de extravagante en uitbundige kleerdij en muziek hebben vast z'n rol gehad in het grotere plaatje van een genre wat de 80s uiteindelijk zou gaan definiëren. Daar is ook alles mee gezegd, ik blijf vooral achter met een hyper van het te hoge gehalte serotonine in m'n bloedbaan. 5/10 Highlights: Antmusic Ants Invasion

Oh great I thought finally something decent to listen to. 2 mins in remembered I never liked adam and the ants beyond a couple of singles for a reason, they were light weight pop crap masquerading as something edgy. Yeah this was considered edgy in 1980, men wearing make up!!!! What will the neighbours think. God no wonder my generation are shit.

I can’t in good conscience support these guys. I started listening and kind of liked it so I read up on them a bit. They use “Burundi beat” which itself was taken without ever compensating the original artists. Looks like they also used some Native American styling as a costume.

Any attempt at charismatic music making was a huge swing and a miss. The whole thing comes across as entirely arrogant for some reason. This was a goddamn pain to listen to. Sometimes people express regrets before they die and maybe I will have some when my time comes, but at the very least, I’ll be able to confidently and proudly declare that I didn’t make this. Nor did I have any positive feelings towards it. 1/5

Un disco de new-wave un tanto confuso. La temática es sumamente dispersa y el sonido bastante poco pulcro. A pesar de haber sido un gran éxito comercial en la época, el trabajo envejeció sumamente mal, transformándose en uno de los peores discos que he escuchado en esta lista hasta la fecha. Realmente un desastre de álbum que, si bien, tiene chispas de grandeza, no me logró satisfacer con ninguna de sus canciones.

I don't like whatever this is. They never should have made music videos, seeing them made it so much worse. The audio only songs on Youtube are more tolerable but still just...bad.

Well that explains what started all the head bangin,body slamming dancing. Adam looks like a David Bowie wannabe but sounds like a Duran Duran groupie. Very wild beat but the words failed to move me. Even with an amazing high intensity beat. Kept losing interest a few minutes into each song. I can image Pee Wee Herman doing his high intensity workouts to this album. But am going to go with “heard it once and won’t repeat that mistake again”.I I will leave saying Adam’s most famous words “Don’t drink Don’Smoke” That is a fun dance song that the ants can go marching 1 by 1.

Did not like this album that much, reminded me of the Culture Club but if they were called the tryhard club! (lol, they're trying too hard in my opinion). I don't have anything else to say, disappointed that an album would waste my time like that.

Desconeixia completament aquest grup i aquest àlbum. Els primers dos temes m'han semblat interessants però després se m'ha començat a fer pesat, i això que no es tracta pas d'un àlbum gaire extens, poc més de 40 minuts. Té un regust de new wave i post punk que no m'ha acabat d'entrar. Les cançons m'han semblat poc inspirades, no m'han cridat l'atenció. Mira que l'he agafat amb ganes de descobrir un grup nou, però el regust final ha estat més aviat decebedor.
