Reviews (page 7 of 7)

Not a fan.

"Musicians play loud when they want to act smart, right? "CORRECT"

Personally, I think there are better Sonic Youth albums

Not a fan, too noisy and unorganized, get like random sounds a certain points

I’m not really one for 90s grunge, but this is pretty much the quintessential sound. Personally a 1, with context probably a 4

Very grungy, but a lot of it is guitar distortion just to make the noise. Not a massive fan.

I knew a lot of people that enjoyed this album. I was not one of them.

Just wailing guitars and off key singing. Every time I though a song was decent it failed to reach the point where I would normally say. “Hey, not bad!” Forgettable. Chapel Hill is passable.

Not a huge fan of this one.

Feels significantly less inspired and more annoying than Goo. Not great.

Too noisy and messy for my musical taste

Noisy. Flashes of cool instrumentals from the drums and guitar but overall not pleasant to listen to.

Not my cup of tea but at least they're anti-fascists lmao

Grungy, kinda plodding

Not a big fan

I'm not young or angry enough to enjoy this

Excessively noisy. DNF.

not a good album

Barely registered.

Grungy, loud, distorarted post-punk at it's finest. My 14yr old heart would have been happy hearing this in 93 - but today I'm not feeling it. This album did not hold up, especially Kim Gordan's vocals.

This album just doesn’t seem to have the same energy or creativity as it leads you on to think at times with some of it’s songs, which are rather the exception to on otherwise just “loud” album

Sonic Youth's brand of alternative just really doesn't do it for me. It's always noisy and off key, and has an improvised vibe that they clearly don't have the talent to pull off. 2/5.

Never really understood these guys popularity in the 90s.

Highlights: “100%”, “Purr”, “On the Strip”, “Chapel Hill” Listening to this made me return to “Sister” to try and figure out why I enjoyed that album more than this one. There’s catchy riffs in both, as well as plenty of distortion & screeching. I read there’s 5 albums by Sonic Youth, so maybe after the other 3 I’ll get why this entry is so acclaimed.

I remain steadfast in my inability to appreciate what Sonic Youth did for punk. The screeching vocals on most tracks detracts from the music for me on most of the tracks. Sugar Kane was an ok song

Definitely still not a big fan of Sonic Youth and this album was no exception.

I'm just not feeling this album. Before starting this 1001 Albums experiment, I believed that rock took a nose-dive in the '00s and never adequately corrected itself. I'm beginning to think that (in my eyes, anyway) rock's decline was more gradual, and started in the '90s. There's plenty of rock from that decade that I like (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage, etc.), but it sure seems like most of the '90s rock albums we've gotten so far have underwhelmed me. Maybe I was too busy listening to hip-hop and R&B in the '90s. Or maybe I was listening to more hip-hop and R&B because rock was starting to bore me. Can't say for sure, but either way, this album just ain't lighting up that oh-so-important dopamine pathway.

Boring teenage rock.

Sonic Youth are like bad radiohead, and radiohead are already kinda shit

23rd August 2022 Started on the 23rd but finished on the 24th on the tube to the office. Chilled evening watching house of the dragon after having a bowling lesson. Enjoyed this less than previous sonic youth albums. I get the whole “noise rock” thing but this was a bit jarring for me.

It's just trying too hard to be cool. Admittedly, Kim Gordon is cool, but the songs are all scuzzy but kind of pedestrian.

"Can you sing it as if you have constipation throughout?" anon, Sound Engineer

Very loud punk and alt-rock. Not very good, I did not enjoy this very much. All the songs sound the same, it's terrible.

05/28/2022 Punk rock... is not for me. YELLING!

I like punk and alternative, but I found this album too long and sections really hard to listen to.

Not my cup of tea at all. Very messy and "noisy", the songs lacked structured and the vocals were more yelled than sung. All this for 60 minutes was just too much

Crappy tuneless nonsense that sounds even worse now than it did before

I didn't expect Sonic Youth to sound like this. Can't say I'm massively keen, although the alternation between songs with male and female vocals was... something... maybe. Otherwise, the only notable things are the 'having a difficult poo' vocals on Shoot and the presence of a song called 'Creme Brulee' which makes me wonder if Les McQueen from League of Gentlemen took inspiration from Sonic Youth? Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Sugar Cane Date listened: 12/05/22

I could pass on Sonic Youth every time. I don't hate Sonic Youth, but I DO NOT like Sonic Youth. "Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit" and "Nic Fit" cemented this album as 2 stars, although "Nic Fit" did make me think of Brak from Space Ghost.

I liked a few tracks. Really didn't like a few tracks.

I really don't understand the critical appeal of this band. Wish Fulfillment is the only song on the album to grab me even a little this far into it. This is like punk but without the point. Dear god this album sucks. Chapel Hill keeps this from being a 1 star album.

It’s no Daydream Nation. Lacking melody and Kim’s vocals are … random

Sonic Youth's seventh album continued with their alternative rock music, but had a lot more grunge mixed in. At release this album was considered one of the best rock albums of the year, and ranked highly among other Sonic Youth albums. Unfortunately none of the singles charted well, but the band toured all year to keep their name and album fresh in fans' minds. If you're looking for some classic 90's grunge or punk/alternative rock music, then this is an album to listen to. The guitars in this album will have you up and grooving.

Just noise. No wonder I never listen to them

Noise rock might not be my thing.

Took 11 songs to get to anything that grabbed my attention. Last 4songs were great, reminded me of arcade fire. Would like to revisit to see if I missed something.

This is the third Sonic Youth album suggested and I didn't like the first two, so this is no different.

Not really catching a break here this week. This album was a no go for me too. I didn’t enjoy the discordant nature of the music, or the lead vocals whiny tone.

Not my genre, apparently. But here, too, there are interesting compositions: Theresa's sound world On the strip Orange rolls +/-

Very aggressive attack here, with a few moments of that melodic clarity they're capable of. Such physical attack on the instruments. I love when they reach for those haunting chords, but there's less of that, and more sheer brutality on this album. Glad to have heard it though.

Didn't do much for me.

Muy plano.

Never really listened to Sonic Youth before. This album was solid, definitely hear the pre-grunge influences. It felt long and a bit disjointed though, a little difficult to get all the way through.

album art scared me a little bit! liking it just fine so far. his voice is okay, music is okay, lyrics are okay, saved this first song. theyre no going that hard but it suits them. short song, okay, barely noticed the transition into the next one. ok are they singing from a female perspective? omg it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize there was a woman singing too asjdlaksjd sadly i can never really get into this type of music. doesnt sound bad or anything (except for nic fit) buuut idk. cant get into it.

not into it :(

It's just okay. Better than some of their other shite.

A decent amount of good riffs and tunes hampered by a shite vocalist and too many vocal lines that sound pre-recorded and pasted over whatever blank track spun up on their 4 track.

Probably their most accessible album for me - Sugar Kane and a couple of others are decent but not much else going for it

Ambetant begin.

Not for me

Two Days in a row? Must be about 1001 to 2 chance! This album isn't as good and I wasn't the biggest fan of that other one to be honest. Better than Joni Mitchell though. 2/5

This is Soundthony Badtano, bringing you another Not Good review. Come at me, Sonic Youth fans

Sonic Youth can be so consistently gloom-and-doom, it's hard for me to stomach for long periods of time, and this album did not provide much relief track to track. I was not compelled to listen to any of the bonus tracks, I was ready to move on.

guitar and people shouting meh

Struggled with that one.

Man we are getting all the Sonic Youth these days. Again, the guys vocals are not my thing and that again was the first thing that struck me on the first track. Production clarity has definitely gone up, for better or worse. I kind of hated the female "I love you I love you I love you" on Drunken Butterfly. Live and super loud is how I'd like this music for the most part. Yeah overall I dislike this album the most of Sonic Youth. It's very middle-school-feelings. Looks like Tom listened to the Deluxe Version, even the normal versions too long for me here. I mean, I like doom and gloom and this isn't their best work, for sure. The best track is "Sugar Kane", and you know I don't like the guys voice really.

Not a fan of this... grungy and different, but not my favorite.

Shitty sound with female vocals. No.

Not a big fan of the voice

Grunge, alternativ rock, guitar tungt

Very loud, lots of angst and just not that good.

“Want this cup o tea, Shaun?” “Nah, it’s not mine.”

Beautiful guitars.

Alternative rock. Kinda punk-y. I didn’t really care for it.

It started better than the last Sonic Youth album but got worse as it went on. I'm all for noise rock but some of this is just so bad and annoying

So irritating - couldn't get through a single song. Once he starts singing.....

Not sure how the top comment about this band being better than mine is accurate. I think I could do better than some of these moaning or vomit sounding tracks. Really not good

Not for me even though I usually like a bit of noise.

Inescuchable.

not my sound or vibe

After 3 albums from Sonic Youth on the list, I'm out. Each one got progressively worse, following the chronological release dates. The band may have been avant-garde for the early 90s but it has no lasting power. Today, it's a sloppy, noisy annoyance. Don't like either of the leads singers. Some ok guitar work here and there and a glimmer of hope with the three track wrap up "Chapel Hill," "JC" and "Purr." But then Kim Gordon closes the album with burnt "Creme Brulee." I would have given one record from the youth a place on the list, purely for the underground influence but the list has wasted spots on these guys. Hopefully the band slows down and grows up at some point...1.22 stars.

What the hell am I missing about Sonic Youth? Dirty as an album is yet another noisy, lazy mess from the likes of Sonic Youth. The instrument work is lackluster, the beats and backing tracks are washed out and covered with obnoxious noise and the vocals almost seem intentionally phoned-in. I'm trying my best not to be hyperbolic about this album but I'm actually surprised how much this album bothered me. Outside of Sugar Kane and maybe one other track I wanted to just keep my head down, get through this and turn Sonic Youth off forever. Three albums in I can confidently confirm that I am not a Sonic Youth fan. There is almost nothing endearing I have taken from the nearly 3 hours I have spent with them thus far. I can't imagine myself identifying with any of this even at my most rebellious hipster phase of my life. Really hoping they don't show up on this list or in my rotation ever again. 1.16 stars

I went back to listen to the first Sonic Youth album to get a better perspective, and I was a little bit hard on it at the time. I can kind of appreciate what they're doing with varios experimental composition techniques, and I think I like this album a bit more than the last one.. Chapel Hill was actually a decent song, and the tempo changes on the next song "JC" are an example of the experimental techniques I mentioned. That being said, their music still sucks, and this female vocalist, especially needs to be quiet

It’s like they try to ruin every single song on the album with their vocals.

I DNFed :/

The youth against fascism song was entertaining.

Originally gave this a 2, although I never ended up finishing it. Now that I've actually finished I can see I wasn't missing out on much

mucho ruido y pocas nueces

Not for me.

Unbelievably bad. I have no idea why people like this band.

I do not enjoy Sonic Youth at all. I just wanted this album to be over and it was almost an hour long. I especially dislike Kim Gordon’s voice.

God this was just an hour of tedious noise

Meh, gave up listening. Not interested personally

1.5/10

Ugh. So Neil Young really likes this band. OK. There's no escaping this man whilst listening to this damn list. He's my fourth most played artist on my Spotify Wrapped this year, and I only listen to him, and his wretched Extended Universe™, because of this bastard project. Fuck you, Robert Dimery.

Never again

I'm giving this a 1 because I'm tried of listening to this band

Just noise.

Didn't get to listen to the whole album properly but there was nothing that I liked. I don't think noise rock is my thing.

Found it a little annoying.

We’ve had our one. This is unnecessary Sonic Youth isn’t THAT important. White not critics strike again.

Ruido… con buena intencion

Ok. I can see how someone could enjoy this style of music…it’s just not me. The album is full of foolish instrument effects (electric guitar slides, holding notes for way too long, etc…) and bad vocals with even worse lyrics. There was a reason I never listened to this band in the 80s and I now know what it is. Seriously, some of these songs are truly unlistenable. I don’t know if that is even a word, but it should be to help describe today’s task. Don’t believe me?? Try to stomach Orange Rolls, Angel’s Spit. The lead singer screamed at me more than my wife does. This music is no good.

The female singer sounds very annoyed. It doesn't sound nice. Lots of dissonance

yeah turns out i don't like sonic youth, i just feel peer pressure to do so

2/10… Noise rock / grunge / *1992

Nope. 1.0

Most of this I actively don't want on and would take it off if it was. I was good with Sugar Kane and Personality Crisis, but as a whole, I really didn't like this.

Yeah I could not get through this album. Not hate, just not for me and there wasn't anything too interesting about it either.

I'm getting really tired of albums that sound like white noise for an hour

Don’t want to listen to this based on previous exposure

Did absolutely nothing for me, but at least my ears didn't bleed. I'm rating a 1/5 instead of a 2/5 because I actively don't want to hear it again, even though it's not objectively the worst thing so far on this project I've listened to

Weird vibes. No good at all

Raucous but not in a good way. Was the lead singer unwell? Close to unlistenable.

Que tortura, meu deus

Why?!?!? Why do these pylons get 4 fucking albums on this generator?!? Another painful listening experience... Favorite songs: Wish Fulfillment, Drunken Butterfly, Sugar Kane Least favorite songs: Theresa's Sound-World, Shoot, Youth Against Fascism, Nic Fit, On the Strip, Creme Brulee 1/5

1 stern

Unpleasant.

This was one of those "I listened to the first 3 songs and had to nope out" albums I've been coming across from time to time doing the 1001 Albums thing, the instruments just sounded like a wall of noise to me (this is coming from a fan of grindcore too) and the vocals were basically unlistenable.

Bereits das Cover schreit: Nein! Die ersten Töne erzeugen Ohrenschmerzen! Aus!

If you like listening to variations of shitty guitar feedback, this is the album for you.

This album did my ears dirty

I like punk, and I like some of Sonic Youth's other music, but by and large this album didn't really do it for me. I can respect the use of distortion and feedback to create a cacophonous sound that some people find appealing, but I don't think they really nailed the execution. Most of it just feels like they were fucking around and just yanking random knobs without rhyme or reason. I get that punk is about breaking rules, but if the rule you're breaking is "make music that sounds good" it kind of makes it hard to have a mainstream appeal. Kim Gordon's voice really annoyed me on just about every track on this album, and it felt like she really went out of her way to sing poorly. Maybe I'm just too much of a dweeb, but this album wasn't for me.

took a lot not to skip through this one-very not my taste, i think

Nicht mein Geschmack

the most obviously overrated band in a genre with no shortage of overrated bands

not my still. didnt enjoy. 1/5

Didn't really care for this. It wasn't especially bad, just kinda meh.

Sonic youth suck balls. Horrible shit

Just no. It didn’t sound good. This is important

Abgebrochen, viel Lärm und nervige Stimme

Not really sure what it was aiming for but it didn’t hit.

hbo’s girls s1 ep4 hannah’s diary charlie’s song what was marnie thinking to a T

That was a long hour! Kept me guessing—do I actively dislike this, or am I merely ambivalent? The former: tiebreaker to that feedback on JC.

Could not make it through the album. Sounds like noise!

100% and sugar Kane feel like this band trying to show they could have made listenable songs if they’d wanted, they just prefer to make abrasive noise pollution instead for some artistic or philosophical reason. Instead I think they just proved the best they were ever gonna be was mediocre. To me that makes their other songs seem that much more pathetic. I hate sonic youth and whatever it is they stand for.

Torture.

I don't see how anyone can hear loud screaming and loud, out of tune, randomly placed power chords on an overly distorted guitar and think "wow, this is a masterpiece!" But many of the reviews say that this is a great, even "quintessential" or "perfect" album. Is there something I'm missing, or are these just 90s kids being nostalgic about the 90s?

Barely listened. Was so not my thing. Yuck!

As I progress through this list I’m realising that when I get an album which I like I find it easy to write about (which I guess I’m stating here the bleeding obvious) But when I get an album which I consider bad it’s harder to come up with comments and emotions that I have not used before. Sometimes a bad album might have been made by an icon and considered globally as a classic. In which case I can say it’s not my barrow but I can appreciate the impact it made on music and deserving to be on this list. Which brings me back to my original point and this bag of shite. I’ve already used all the expletives and dismissive’s for all the other crap I’ve had to listen to. I don’t just like saying ‘not my cup of tea’ in one line as I prefer justify why don’t like it. But as I’ve now waffled on and my review looks long I can now end without saying anything remotely knowledgeable or assessing the musicality of this album and thus fooling everyone except myself. Who reads this anyway? 1/5 10/12/24

Abgebrochen, viel Lärm und nervige Stimme

not my thing

Experimental Rock which is exhausting to listen to because of being more noisy than music more often than not with bearable parts of alternative.

Just a lot of noise

Let's see, I rated the last four (!!!!) Sonic Youth albums 2, 2, 1, 1. Will this one finally change my mind? Or will it make me wish I had actually already died? The latter I'm afraid. No stars. Also, please, no more.

Beany hats worn indoors or in warm weather. 'Nuff said.

Woof! 👎🏽👎🏽 … Yeah “Grunge” is still not my thing

I hope I never hear any of these songs ever again.

Not my music

What’s not shit is dull and what’s not dull is shit. Not their worst.

Way too trashy/punk rock for me.

Not my thing. At all.

It sounds unpleasant. I don't get it.

Koekjes bakken of zo, of puzzels leggen.

Did not enjoy this album.

Did not like. Just noise to me.

Meh, not for me. Not a great sign when I was happy for it to be over

Meh not for me. I actively thought that it sounded like noose

Discordant noise

"Sonic Youth" really nails this - it's noisy, obnoxious, and I think this only appeals to you if you're a kid who was angsty in the early 90s. It is not appealing to listen to. Fav tracks: N/A

Man, this sucks so bad. I can see how maybe an edgy teen in the 90s would appreciate it, but it does not stand the test of time.

Right down there with Nevermind. I will never understand why some people want to listen to other people shriek.

Too heavy for my tastes

I had a hard time with this one. It seems like it wants to be a rock band with a bunch of needless noise at times. I just couldn't finish it.

Head banging Head Banging head banging bed hanging ed bading bed wetting

Terribly difficult listen. Some people may describe some of my favorite albums similarly. I'm no stranger experimental rock, but holy fuck is this terrible. I knew going in I wasn't going to enjoy this. But boy was I wrong. I HATED this. I could make an argument that literally 50% of the lines on this album, sound like they were either being delivered by a deaf man, or while the singer(s) are taking a violent, no-fibre-in-months, hard, painful, shit. What kind of shit-hole perspective did the people who made this band famous come from? I might have to skip the next Sonic Youth record because this was fucking unbearable.

Please no more Sonic Youth!

I have spent the best part of twenty years trying to get into Sonic Youth. They are one of those bands that critics and musicians absolutely revere, and on paper they should be right up my street. Every few years I go back in, hoping this will be the moment it finally clicks. Listening to Dirty again, I really wanted it to win me over. It did not. There is no denying the influence or the attitude, and the production has that thick early 90s alternative rock weight to it. But for me it just feels like a fairly standard heavy record from that era. The guitars are noisy, the vocals detached, and the songs blur into one another without ever really grabbing me. I keep waiting for something to spark, a melody, a hook, a moment of chaos that feels exciting rather than just abrasive, but it never quite arrives. I can appreciate what they were doing and why so many people love them. It just does not connect with me emotionally. After multiple attempts over the years, I think I have to accept they might simply not be my band. Favourite song: 100% Least favourite song: Orange Rolls, Angel’s Spit Album artwork: Bold and very of its time. Instantly recognisable.

Just noise

My ears bleed.

Just can't stand it

Didn't like it. They try too hard at producing random noise. All over the place. Not an album I'd stick on. 1 star

Not for me

Just couldn’t get into it personally

Zero stars

Not for me. Young excited noisy band.

Not worth listening to Least fav: shoot Fav: Jc Guess I don’t really like noise music lol

Ugh. It is not good. I just don't care for it. It is whiney and the music is not good. It is better than a one but not really a two. I will round down.

Honestly, it just sounds too much like they're jamming the instruments and not playing? Really unsure but the whole album left me un-enthused.

To me this just sounds like a college band. Not terrible, but nothing special. Didn’t know there was a female in the band though! Learned something new. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: nothing stood out Worst Song:

Dont touch m breast im just working the desk... super trash

not a fan for the most part. A few songs I liked

Started with a screech... got worse... dreadful noise of extreme use of the wah wah bar mixed with resemblance of some melody or vocals. Drumming patterns were just smash smash smash akin to a school band on their debut in the school gym.

I’m sure this is great, and it should really suit my taste but I just couldn’t find a way into it.

Not my thing. Kinda noisy. Hey, Yutes - Get off my lawn!

Not really to my taste in music, even in the songs where I would find connections with specific lyrics, it was always wrapped in discordant rock. I had to skip through a bunch of songs in 10-second increments because I found the inharmonious noise quite awful, sensory wise. I liked the guitar on Chapel Hill.

absolutely no. from beginning to end it was awful. there was no good part anywhere.

Something that starts ok with "100%" but then shits itself with a non-effort like "Swimsuit Issue" just pisses me off and remains just as awful ... until it gets worse. Just an ugly-sounding hour of insulting laziness. no. 2/10 1 star

Loud, aggravating noises and a horrid singing style turned me off from this album. This is the second album of theirs I've gotten and this is by far the worst of the two. Just not my thing, I didnt have the desire to finish the album.

Too much noise. Some nice guitar riffs fail to make it listenable.

These songs just sounded like a lot of racket. Nothing that appealed to me at all Hated it.

It was definitely in the timeline of what I should have been into but never really got into Sonic Youth. I pushed myself through the whole album and still think, just not for me.

This is just so laughably bad. Horrid "singing" and unimaginative songs. 2/10.

Suffered through about half of this. I tried. It was bad noise.

Had a hard time enjoying this one. It felt long and I skipped a few songs. The singer was pretty rough and it felt a little too edgy. 3.1/10

Not my jam at all. made it 1 minute in. yuck.

Fuck Sonic Youth.

Bit much for me this, don’t really go in for whiny vocals 1-2 stars (didn’t finish it)

There was nothing on this album that stood out to me. I can understand that some people want a band to sound the same throughout an album and over the course of their career. When I'm looking for new music or bands to listen to they have got to get my attention and break out from the noise. Catchy lyrics, interesting arrangements, and experimentation are instrumental to peaking my interest. This did none of that.

Nope. Stopped after a couple of songs. Would get a headache if I listen to much more. It's just chaotic noise to me.

1/5 after only 3 songs I knew this wasn't of my taste
