Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Some fun songs, good guitars.
This is the first Aerosmith album I remember and one of the first albums I bought with my own money. You would think that at the very least I would have liked this for nostalgia reasons.
I think this confirms that I don't need any more Aerosmith in my life. After the first listen Janie's Got A Gun was stuck in my head and it's a pretty great track. The rest is mediocre, Love In An Elevator was funny when I a teen.
I love the music on this album, it's what I consider classic rock but the lyrics, not so much. Holy cow could they not vary the subject? Anyway, I think I walked around most of the day singing Janie's got a gun and love in an elevator. It's amazing how I can't remember a phone number or why I came into a room but I can remember the lyrics to these two songs even though I haven't heard them in forever.
Well, it's Aerosmith, you know exactly what you're going to get. When my brain thinks of default rock band, this is the sound it hears. It's comfortable and reassuring, and long may it last.
If we continue at the current rate, 18 of the 1001 must-hear albums will be by Aerosmith. Seems excessive. This has got just enough about it to make me understand their continued appeal, even though I still think they're a bit meh. I actually think the best bits are when they go fully OTT (i.e. Love In An Elevator).
s ok
Aerosmith wasn't my sort of thing back when this album came out. However, in this project I have rediscovered and liked so much music I had once passed over, so I had high hopes for this. Perhaps too high. It was F.I.N.E.
Pump was almost a surprise to listen to - whilst I've heard a bit about Aerosmith, I didn't realise how much their lyrics really leant into the 'sex, drugs & rock 'n' roll' stereotype pretty hard - guess that's why its a stereotype, it needed to be somewhat true! Aerosmith come out with all guns blazing on this record with exactly what you'd expect from a hard metal/glam rock band. Most surprising of the record for me was Janie's got a Gun and the themes surrounding it, not a topic I had pictured Aerosmith singing about. Best: The Other Side Worst: Monkey On My Back
Drove around in the Riviera with this playing more than a few times. An album from a bygone era.
The hard rock album Pump is the tenth from rock band Aerosmith. It was certified 7 times platinum in the US, back in 1995. This is also Aerosmith's second best-selling album and it's considered the peak of the glam metal/rock era. Popular songs are "Janie's Got a Gun" and "Love in an Elevator". I've heard a couple of songs from this album before, but this was the first time I listened to all of it. I have to say that it was great rock music and it sounded kind of nostalgic. However, it might not be my favorite hard rock album. I'll have to listen to a few more first.
A load a great songs. 3.5/5
Better than bon Jovi, still shitty 3
I used to love this album, but there's so much about it I just don't connect to anymore. It's not them; it's me. Maybe it's a little bit them. Their music is just so damn horny. Best track: Going Down/Love in an Elevator
Pump, Aerosmith, 1989: -strong bombastic opening -pretty empty lyrics to start but the driving drums and guitars are energizing and very "of their time" -energy is maintained through the second song, the inimitable force of stephen tyler's rapey-romance rasp floating over repetitive classic rock noise like oil on water but not in a bad way -by song 3 I am bored, but they bring in the cliche chorus of "whoas" between hooks and it's catchy. The song evolves into a very dynamic albeit delayed overture for the album - thank goodness, because I would have turned it off if not. good soup. - we're back on stephen tyler's/aerosmith's bullshit for song 4 but I'm strapped in because I know the next song is an absolute banger and I'm looking forward to it. -I'm not going to let aerosmith off the hook for having the same vice as many of their contemporaries, and that's: ending a song by fading out instead of writing an actual ending for it. fuck you. -Water Song/Jamie's Got a Gun: I have no problem enjoying a song that is popular because it's good. They were laying down the groundwork for some of the best rock jams to come in the 90s IMO. -Really enjoyed the sprinkly interlude "dulcimer stomp" and subsequent easy rolling beat of "the other side" provided much needed balance. Definitely feeling like the second half of this album will be better. -Nevermind, the next two songs were boring as shit -Voodoo Hoodoo is great if you love stephen tyler wailing in his yagagagaaaiaowww way. Cool to hear them continue to dabble in grunge influence. Other than that, meh. -Nice to end on a chill ballad, good way to win me over again - I like a good old-fashioned emotional rockboy. I prefer Aerosmith in the 90s, bye.
For an Aerosmith album, this is actually really decent. This is their second album following their 80s revival, and they don't disappoint. It's remarkably consistent, with tracks moving smoothly among each other. There's some repetition, and for sure "My Girl" to "Hoodoo" are complete duds. The songs are marketable and listenable, you can bear through them alright, but I wouldn't exactly call them good. I'm also unfortunately biased to like them cause I grew up on a rock station that played nearly half this album on repeat even 20 years after its release. Despite that, I truly believe "Janie's Got a Gun" is a great song, and "Love In An Elevator" is a nostalgic, anthemic ode to their 70s work, characterized by an outstanding bridge that rivals GnR. Meanwhile, "What It Takes" has a catchy chorus, but it's way too long and I don't like three quarters of the song.
Helppoa rockia. Ei mitään tajunnan räjäyttävää, mutta kuuntelee helposti pitkiäkin aikoja.
nije lose al ko da mi nešto fali
Pretty standard cock-rock. Good fun I guess, not taking itself too seriously but other than Love in an Elevator not much to sing into your hair bush about.
3.4 - solid rock album with a harder Aerosmith edge than their 70s rock and later 90s hits. Goin Down, Janie’s Got a Gun and Goin’ Down are all solid listens.
Aerosmith is sort of their own caricature, and stadium rock isn’t my preferred flavour. That said there were some new to me tracks here that pleasantly surprised.
3-, not bad album but it's getting boring at some point
Pump is your average late 80's Aerosmith. It has a handful of good songs. The social commentary of Janie's Got a Gun is strong and somewhat a new ay to approach family assaults. It ends up being the most memorable song on the album along with Love In an Elevator. The latter song is kinda of corny and has not aged as well in my opinion. This album is just ok in my book and doesn't necessary deserve a spot in this book.
I like Aerosmith... I thought I liked Aerosmith more...
Not what I was expecting. Was very meh. Quite enjoyed the start but was all a bit too much of the same note
Easy listen but not my cuppa tea
Alright, doesn't live up to "Toys in the Attic" in my opinion though. However, still a fun energetic, hard rock album but to me nothing truly special on this one.
Pump
I can almost hear Steven Tyler's lips
There is some pretty decent classic rock on here
Just okay. No strong feelings about Aerosmith.
raunchy at times, but on brand
Quintessential classic rock. Easy to listen to and a pretty fun ride. 3/5 It was alright, probably won’t listen again though.
Rockin
Sin más. Un 3.
Don't do drugs mmmkay? This album is an example of what you can do if you're clear-headed. Sonically, PUMP is dated but Aerosmith put out one heck of an album with this. What It Takes is still in frequent rotation for me. 3.5/5
I'm really not an Aerosmith fan, and this era of the band in particular was a time when I wanted nothing to do with them. And they were everywhere in 1989, God help me. So, in my reconsideration of Aerosmith-version-1989, this is a pretty good album, with a few standout songs. Considering the dire state of hard rock and metal that year, this was actually a great offering from the band. They are in really solid musical form here. Aerosmith has always been a real workhorse of a band, with excellent chemistry and real musical chops. Joe Perry's riffs as always are stellar and worth the price of admission of any Aerosmith album. Steven Tyler also sounds great, his charisma in full force. Joey Kramer on drums is also excellent and noteworthy. I always see Aerosmith as being Steven and Joe, but Kramer’s energy is palpable and keeps the whole album moving rather effortlessly. Let’s talk about the lyrics, shall we? Yeah, that horndog shtick was warmed over in 1989 and it has not aged well at all. Now I remember what I didn’t like about this band. It’s just so sophomoric and frankly, dumb. You can do this kind of lyric and be clever about it, and this ain’t it. But if you can look past the lyrics, musically the songs are pretty tight. Despite the jailbait theme, "Young Lust" is actually a solid rocker, and a great way to kick off the album. I also really liked "Monkey On My Back," which is a mighty fine showcase for Joe Perry. It’s also a surprisingly dark turn, compared to the general hedonistic tone of the album. I was prepared not to like "Voodoo Medicine Man," but it's pretty great. Brad Whitford's guitar burns beautifully through this song with strong support on rhythm from Kramer and Tom Hamilton. "The Other Side" is a legitimately good song, probably the only single I much liked on this album. As for the rest, I never liked "Love in an Elevator" and that hasn't changed today. How that song was so big will eternally be a mystery to me. "Janie's Got a Gun" is just okay, but it’s got an understandably catchy hook. The subject matter was perplexing at weird at the time, but somehow, they were all over the radio with a hit about a girl killing her abusive father. Only in 1989 folks! "What It Takes" is a pretty solid power ballad by the band, just as listenable as ever. Fave Songs: The Other Side, Monkey on My Back, Voodoo Medicine Man, What It Takes
i'm from boston, so am therefore biased, but i have to confess to having a soft spot for these guys. this isn't what i'd call outstanding, and it can feel a bit dated - and for sure it's gonna feel cheesy at times - but it's not bad, either
Wish I could give 3.5. Love the two hits but the rest seem repetitive
Quote good, intros are interesting at first but then distract from the real songs. It rocks well enough, just or all that special .
Puerile, cheesy, and raucous. Love in an Elevator is fantastic though.
A whole album of Steven Tyler's voice gets a bit grating. My favorite track, as it was before I listened all the way through, is Love in an Elevator. 2.75.
“The album received a mostly positive reception, and has since been called a high-water mark of the glam metal era.”
Always swore he was speaking Spanish in Going Down... it seems I was wrong.. he's talking about an elevator? Any way a pretty mediocre album some hits but middle of the road mostly. 2.5/5
Quite liked this album at the time: Love in the Elevator, Janie's Got a Gun, The Other Side, Don't Get Mad, all strong Aerosmith songs, but the album as whole is nowhere near their string of classical albums from the 70s. I am hesitating between 3 or 4 but go for 3 - same argument as before: this is just one of the many solid albums out there and not an album that should be in a 1001-list.
I found it pretty boring at the start but a few songs in it got better. Still, it doesn't seem like something that I would be in the mood for often.
Call me ignorant but I didn’t realise Aerosmith were this heavy. Recognised a lot of the songs and it was cool to see the context. Is it just me or do Aerosmith just write sick choruses and put no effort into the verses?
There were some really good tracks on here, but a lot of it felt pretty derivative too
A fun but forgettable mix of classic rock, country vibes, and a hint of "please hold" music. Vaguely reminds me of a '90s truck commercial.
Sin más. Un 3.
Ik kan dit wel hebben, die over the top rock van Steven en z'n makkers. Goooooinngggg doooooooowwwnnn.....
Best ok voor een keer. Al had ik die sexuele teksten niet uit zijn mond hoeven horen.
Packed with Single Entendres, great guitar sounds, decent drum sounds, rooted in the Yardbirds. Some rocking good fun as we start out. Love In An Elevator has sounds that are more modern-tweaked - weird radio-friendly snare and odd synths near the end. Starts well. Gets lumpy by track 4. Not much in the way of songs, really, and the guitar riffing becomes pedestrian at this point. By Janie's Got A Gun (track 5) it is falling away. Track 6 is by-the-numbers with no redeeming qualities Track 7 has some Beatles At The Cavern stylings - but no actual song, sadly. Started well. Faded badly, and the last track is Aerosmith Ballad By The Numbers.
Pretty much exactly what you’d except here. Enjoyable enough I suppose!
Eh
Good
Music I expect to hear in a bar scene in a movie. Some recognizable hits. Not an album I would ever choose to listen to by myself.
Solid, similar to other rock albums from the era.
There are a handful of Aerosmith songs from their early days that I really do love. I'm not sure why, and not exactly sure when (maybe early 80s?), but for me, the albums they released later on never did it for me. I don't dislike this album, but I am just not that interested.
There are some well known songs and it was a good listen.
I was kinda low on this to start but it grew on me some. It's cool to listen to an Aerosmith album minus some of the mega hits, even though lots of these songs were incredibly catchy. That being said, I judge a lot of these albums based on whether or not I would return to them as a whole. I can see myself listening to singles here, but not Pump as a whole, and that brought it down. Saved: Young Lust, Going Down/ Love In An Elevator, Monkey On My Back*, Water Song/Janie's Got A Gun, What It Takes
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: F.I.N.E., Dulcimer Stomp/ The Other Side, What It Takes Cutting Edge: My Girl Overall Notes: Horny as expected with some clunker lines, but also genuinely good rock. I enjoyed my time listening to this about as much as I could enjoy an album with two pickup trucks fuckin on the cover.
A stronger party rock album from Aerosmith. The chorus’ are strong and there’s more variety in the songs. Better than “Rocks”. This had several songs that are worth going back to. 6.7/10
Pure cheese bangers
Fav Tracks: Going Down/ Love In An Elevator; Water Song/ Janie's Got a Gun Catchy songs for the most part, cool riffs and solos, this album is fun and doesn't take itself serious. Very strong 3/5
not bad
Bråkete men nice
Not the biggest Aerosmith guy. A few classics by steve tyler is not my type of lead singer
If spinal tap was a real band. Not bad though
Not bad
It's got some bops on it. I also feel like this music fits a specific time and place, but unfortunately it's not my time or place.
meh a bit boring
Fun, sounds nice, but not top tier Aerosmith, in my opinion
The 80s were weird, but this is a pretty good album.
only heard one of the songs before, not a real fan, but I know they have been around a long time.
Decent rock. Surprised it's not better ngl
Very good. 3 Iconic songs on this album.
Going Down/Love In An Elevator с его примитивными партиями, ленивыми напевами и вездесущими "оу е-е!". Да и хиты тут есть. Один. Water Song/Janie's Got A Gun.
A fun pop/rock album that make me smile with nostalgia.
Liked it but not enough to give it 4 star.
Good Album - some classics and some gumph
OK, but not really into Aerosmith.
Je m’étais dit ah non pas Aerosmith. Après 2 tounes je tapais des mains en chantant.
Pretty dumb but kinda compelling and decent to listen to. The cheap Casio keyboard effects on janie’s Got a gun almost ruin the song for me. There are some cool musical moments here and there throughout, but overall not that special.
Jenny's Got a Gun was quite good
cool
Aerosmith are like vampires. Released their first album in 1973 and look more or less the same today. always thought of them as more of singles band but this is great. Guitar led rock music with one of the great front men. There is a bit of filler on here and most of the album tracks sound exactly the same but enjoyable none the less and the big songs are sublime . 3/5
Aerosmith. Seemed fine in the first whiz through.
How come the album art is two trucks having sex? A couple songs were sort of fun, but I was always disappointed when a song would have a 30 second intro that sounded kinda wacky and different and then the song itself just sounded like everything else in the album.
Just trucks fuckin trucks. Sounds alright and some of the songs are fun but I can't see myself listening to this very often. Also sometimes sex jokes get old, which is an opinion Aerosmith apparently disagrees with.
aumoins 4 bonnes tounes
Nunca había escuchado este álbum entero pero si sus canciones más famosas, y la verdad es que son bastante recomendables y van las tres en fila «"Going Down" / "Love in an Elevator"», «"Monkey on My Back"» y «"Water Song" / "Janie's Got a Gun"».
good, not great
Worth a revisit
Got some nostalgia for this one from my teen years. It wasn't quite metal enough for my tastes, but this was pre-internet, and beggars can't be choosers! Fave track - "Janie's Got a Gun" - gotta love that glass harmonica intro!
Liked a couple songs
Typical Aerosmith. Some good hits.
Classic album- I’m only happy when it rains and stupid girl reminded me of being a preteen again. However they have a dreariness that the rest of the album drags. Not my favourite style of music unless I’m in the mood.
Gewoon prima classic rock album, niks mis mee
Some of the songs were great, but others were just generic american rock.
A few undeniable fat riffs but nothing special overall. Steven Tyler gives me the creeps and I've also never been able to look at glam rock the same since watching the Decline of Western Civilization
good if you need a bit of rock
Lost me towards the end.
Good album. Loved Janie's Got a Gun when it came out.
I really don't understand genuinely liking Water Song/Janie's Got a Gun. Album's fine apart from that.
Not bad but not their best.
even though "janie's got a gun" sounds like the most 1989 song ever i still enjoyed it. the voodoo song was cool too and probably my favorite on the album.
Creepy and stale
Middle of the road big hair pop rock. No need to listen again
Not bad, not really great either
5/10 - typical Aerosmithy sound, never really got it but at least it's distinctive
We get it, Steven Tyler! You're a horny creep. There's one or two good tunes here but that's it. The whole thing seems to consist of songs about how much sex the band likes to have on the daily and how many girls they can pull. Not really one to make you think at all. Don't let it distract you from the fact that Steven Tyler once took guardianship over an underage girl so that he could continue taking drugs and sleeping with her. A vile human being. Favourite track: Love In An Elevator Least favourite track: Young Lust
Is this seriously something people have to hear? I can see maybe one of their early albums, but this is 80s schlock.
Why Pump? Is this the most dated sounding album or what? Never really been an Aerosmith fan, but I would have taken Permanent Vacation over this one. Funny thing is I saw them on the Pump tour (a friends choice not mine) so there is absolutely no nostalgia there for me with this one! Yet another album I have question why its even here!
can't find anything interesting on this record
Hrikalega leiðinleg plata.
I'd love to see the criteria for picking these albums. Sheesh. Every song on this album sounded the same except for a 1-minute anomaly of dulcimer music, the beginning of a song with a mouth harp, and the first minute of the last song. Besides that, every song sounded alike to my ears. I've never heard the songs on this album, but they sound like every other Aerosmith song I've heard except for "Dream On." People wonder why that song got so overplayed? Maybe because it was their only interesting song?! JK, I haven't listened to their full catalog so can't judge, but if this is supposed to be one of their best albums, why would I bother? 2 stars because only Brian Wilson gets 1 fucking star.
One of the first rock bands and records I remember somehow being distinct from the hair metal that was so ubiquitous at the time. In retrospect, I might have had that backwards a bit as the hair metal bands were clearly indebted to these dorks. The singles are still the standouts and the album cuts are glossed-up bar band schlock at best. I remember The Other Side catching my ear a bit when I was 12, but the abrupt and “intentional” key change is pretty silly today. Janie was my favourite as a dramatic preteen but I can see how the oldsters (dudes in their 20s) were like “huh, weird fit” for a band otherwise interested in having a good (clean!) time. Elevator and What It Takes are likewise well-made, huge-sounding productions, but on the whole feel like they’ve lost some spark since the late 80s/early 90s, whereas contemporaries like Bon Jovi and Def Leppard still make cover band setlists.
oh boy! Aerosmith but with the horrors of 80s rock production. fuck. FUCK. 1.2-2.4. see cock rock tolerance comments. "i got a girlfriend with the hoochy-coochy eyes" you are 41. "love in an elevator" works though.
two trucks having sex two trucks having sex My muscles, my muscles, involuntarily flex
Pure cheese, got a few catchy songs but I really never understood Aerosmith....
Kudos for making this in their 40s - butt rock knows no demographic bounds. Is that pan flute and strings in Janie’s Got a Gun? Come on hahah.
Wasnt too fussed, it was fine and could listen again but nothing felt standout save for 1 song
Maybe I'm feelng grumpy today but I simply did not like this album. I grew up in the 80s and, in this regard, am familiar with the band even if only through their many popular hits during those years. My feelings toward them before listening to this were 'meh' but I expected / was hopeful there might be something noteworthy or enjoyable deeper into the album away from the hits. Nope. Several songs were layered and enjoyable but Steven Tyler's obsession style of singing grates. The lack of diversity in their lyrics augments that irritation. We get it already - you're horny and want to lick a crack. The repitition and laziness of Don't Get Mad, Get Even irritated me the most. I will not be back for this one. 2/5
I thought this album was mediocre back in the day when I still kind of liked Aerosmith (I do still dig their first album and Toys in the Attic, beyond that, Greatest Hits, please). It’s astonishing to me that critics still stand by it. Even the hits have some ick factor on this one.
Sometimes it is difficult to separate the art from the artist. It is shocking how many times I have thought this while going through the list.
I’m going to be controversial here: this list does not need three Aerosmith albums. I know this album was their comeback album after a decade of being left behind, but it’s radio rock and, in my opinion, nothing more. I see how this could be someone’s favorite. It’s a well produced album. However, it doesn’t offer anything that their previous catalog or the state of rock had at the time had to offer. Love in an Elevator is a classic song, and a personal favorite from Aerosmith. Young Lust is a fun romping opener. Janie’s Got a Gun is a good song. However, each of these songs were driven by RCS Selectors and marketing firms. As a whole this album simply is… Can I give it a 2.5/5?
Not as fun as you’d hope
AC/DC if they were just a bit more boring Legging can’t remember a single song and I listened to it yesterday 2.5
Sounds like if 4 kids listened to a song by Guns N’ Roses and wanted to be them it wasn’t good
Oh damn I just thought this was so forgettable! Dont hate it per se, but bland and samey
Getting this album when Steven Tyler is all over the news due to the legal case against him involving historical child sexual assault allegations sure is some timing. I have to say, the lyrics on this album definitely don't help his case. I'm torn on a rating because I think this album would have been an absolute blast to listen to in the car during a summer road trip, but I can't divorce it from the gross context in which it (and this band) exists.
I hate this cock rock bullshit so much like how was rock and roll like this so mainstream?
This was ok. No standout tracks , just all very similar.
Big stupid album that's skin deep all the way to the bone. Just how shallow is it all? They fill the album with sexual innuendo and songs about little girls creeping down alleys and lock up your daughters coz 42yo Tyler's in town and then come out with a song about Child Sexual Abuse that's, I guess, meant to show their deeply socially conscious credentials. Their message seems to be; The only thing that can stop a bad man with an erection is a good girl with a gun. A ridiculous album. (Not in a good way)
A bit of teen nostalgia
Its okay Not really a fan
Durr hurr hurrr, that one truck looks like it's shagging that other truck; this is obviously highbrow entertainment.
Never been a big Aerosmith guy. Especially Love in and Elevator
My wife will probably leave me if she ever reads this, but aside from the releases this album is not good and really only What It Takes stands out--The Other Side is okay, Janie's is a cringe song coming from Tyler, and Elevator is dumb (but funny). The rest is just weird blues and is there too much slide guitar? It's like they were doing country rock at times. It's a solid 2 and What it takes maybe gets it to 2.5 for me.
Favorite track(s): Janie's Got a Gun
Solo hay puros álbumes de rock en esta verga y no todos son buenos pongan otra cosa aaaaaaa
Meh. I guess I'm not particularly into metal/hair metal but this felt like an album full of filler, or I was in the mood for it. A couple of songs I recognise but I'd rate this at 2.5/5. It's not bad just not me.
Didn't do much for me. My foot tapped occasionally but it's all too much, no light and shade.
This sounds to me like it would be the full soundtrack to an unreleased Bill & Ted movie from 1993. It’s basically throwaway cock pop rock pish, admittedly with some hooks. 2
Skeezy hard/glam rock with bluesy licks. Can there be anything unexpected or interesting here? 3rd track and nope, it's all innuendo and machisimo. Love in an Elevator has some decent riffs at least but already knew the song. Intro to Dulcimer Stomp is pretty but it goes nowhere... Best track - Janie's Got a Gun 2 or 3 stars - half the album is generic guff. Call it 2
pack it up grandpa
I just don't get it or I am not very cool. Probably more of the second one. The guitar playing is really good but I can't get past Steven Tyler's voice. Feels like the same song over and over again. 4.5/10 Top song Young lust
When I was a kid, I loved the rhythm games Guitar Hero and Rock Band. In hindsight they're a big part of why I love music so much. While I thought both were cool, Guitar Hero was my favorite, probably just because it was the first one I played. Then in 2008, Guitar Hero released an Aerosmith edition. And in 2009, Rock Band dropped The Beatles Rock Band. Suddenly 11 year old me faced a really tough choice. I could cosplay as Joe Perry by myself, strutting around the living room while an animated sleep paralysis demon Steven Tyler, with dead eyes and an unhinged muppet jaw, sang Love in an Elevator. Or I could get a fab five together and cosplay as George Harrison. Anyway, I still think Aerosmith kinda sucks, despite Perry's shredding, and I probably subconsciously (and obviously unfairly) compare them to The Beatles every time I hear them.
Shit rock
rock slop
Aerosmith on drugs (complimentary) and Aerosmith off drugs (pejorative) should really be treated as two different bands. "Janie's Got a Gun" and "The Other Side" are fun enough for a second star.
This leans toward heavy rock, and to be honest, it’s not the kind of music I usually listen to. I really didn’t like the vocalist’s voice—it felt like he was constantly shouting and overdoing it—and there wasn’t a single song that made me want to go back and listen again. The one redeeming thing, I’d say, was the drummer—his fills and the arrangements he threw in were insane. Despite all that, I don’t doubt they might have a song or two out there that could surprise me.
Tout ce qui ne va pas avec le hard des années 80 réuni en un album.
I didn’t dislike this as much as I expected. I mean I doubt I go back and listen but hey it was trying something.
horny music. "Janie's got a gun" maybe the only good one
It all sounds kind of flat. There are these very little instrumental moments sprinkled around that are almost interesting. This one isn't for me.
Not bad just boring the last song was good tho
A halfway decent hair metal album mired by skeezy lyrics and the occasionally dissonant instrumentals
Yes it is all about sex and a bunch of 40 somethings writing a really horny sex filled album, but something about it works. Yes his voice is a lot and on its own can be annoying, but somehow it meshes well with the music and songs. They completely buy into the big hair rock of the 80's. But if you are going to follow a trope you need to do it well and they do This project has made me look back on a lot of 80's rock bands and realize they are a lot softer than I remember, but not Aerosmith they still rock out and its catchy, enjoyable, head banging rock. Then What it Takes is such a perfect heartbreak song from this age. But stupid Steven Tyler and being a creep (too gentle of a word)...you have helped ruin the legacy of a band and make this one way more complicated. Without his history this would be an easy 4 for me, but knowing his history it just makes each song hit slightly different and slightly creepier. Also Janie's Got a Gun (an amazing song!) is about a woman taking revenge on her sexually abusive father, WTF Steven and crew, you recognize that sexually abusing a child is wrong except when you do it!
I've never been super in love with Aerosmith, but they're a band I've always liked just fine. Listening to this now though, most of the lyrics are pretty cringey and juvenile. The songs are fun and rockin' but it's hard to really get into them, especially the ones about sex, knowing he's yet another creepy dude into underage girls (or at least he has been in the past). And there's really nothing THAT special about this music. It had a place in time but I don't feel like it aged well. I do like What It Takes and Janie's Got a Gun though.
Some of the trashiest rock music I’ve ever heard. I just can’t tell how self-aware they are?
I spent the first half of the album wondering if there’s any real difference between Aerosmith and Def Leppard and Aerosmith annoys me more because of how insulted I bet they’d be by that comparison. Also, why is a song about a BJ in an elevator 6 minutes long? The back half of the album is slightly better, I kind of liked Dulcimer stomp/other side so I’ll give it a 2
240626 15:21 2.5
Unpopular opinion- I don't like Aerosmith. There are songs I like but they could easily be performed by someone else and I would easily prefer the cover.
They certainly picked the right singles. Otherwise dross, saved by a couple of tracks where Lips McScarf doesn't come over as a total creep
I've never cared for Aerosmith and there's nothing here to change my mind
man, I really do not like 80s hard rock. Aerosmith are very much a greatest hits band - I don't think they can truly fill out an album, as evidenced by most of these songs being forgettable to outright laughable (shoutout to the "Steven Tyler eats ass" anthem). Only the hits were really of any worth to me, and even then, Love in an Elevator could've easily cut off where the radio version does, instead of looping its final chorus for the entire back half of the song. One final cherry that really tanked my rating solidly into 4/10 territory was when I thought it was over and then they did a minute and a half long bluegrass ditty at the end of the final track. Just not enjoyable at all to me.
I’m about to be a hater on this one unfortunately. The hits aren’t even their best hits, and the rest was mostly just annoying noise. This could be because I just wasn’t in the mood to hear Steven Tyler yelling at me, but this brand of big arena 80s rock kinda sucks. This is like Def Leppard but worse and also weirdly sexual.
Real raunchy rock. They're objectively sick with the guitar, but the music somehow does absolutely nothing for me. Standouts: Going Down/ Love In An Elevator • Dulcimer Stomp/ The Other Side
Boring. 2.3
Has two popular songs on it, not a huge fan
all i can think about is that mid 2000’s elmo’s got a gun parody…never heard the original
It’s Aerosmith so there are limits to my enjoyment of it. Second half falls flat in their efforts to diversify the overall sound. Going Down/Love In An Elevator is really catchy, and Janie’s Got A Gun is good too.
Only reason to hear this before you die is to know just how bad albums can really be
I checked out on Aerosmith around Draw The Line/Night In The Ruts. Familiar with the hits from this one and wasn't expecting much from the other tunes but I genuinely like them a lot more than the singles. The interstitial sounds and songs bleeding into each other was pretty cool too. I scrubbed past the first five minutes of that power ballad dreck to hear the little hoedown thingy at the end, that was fun. I practically have an allergic reaction to power ballads, really suck the fun out of an album.
Not my thing but a few good songs
Well, this didn't hold up.
The main thing I will praise this band for is their hologram in the Rock n Rollercoaster queue at Disneyland Paris.
Wow not for me. The screaming high pitched rock music thing. Seems like it was targeted at teenagers back in the 80’s. There were a couple of songs that I didn’t dislike as much as the others but mostly not good.
I don't like the lyrics and popyness that much
Aerosmith no se merece tener dos discos entre los 101 elegidos. este album no tiene ningún interés especial.
plump
Boring
Tylers voice is impressive, but not so listen to for me. I dont like dont want to miss a thing which is softrock at its best. They seem to be at their best going for that style imo. Them trying to do anything heavier does not resonate with me unfortunately.
The first two tracks were so generic, did nothing for me. Boring album, one good pop song in Love in An Elevator, and Janie's Got a Gun is ok I guess. Fave Tracks: Love In An Elevator 2/5
Haha this sucked. I don't even hate Aerosmith, but they are a bit of a joke. Like they shouldn't be on this list once, let alone 3 times.
Janie’s Got a Gun is a good song. Mostly though I found this album pretty tiresome, especially lyrically.
I guess it’s good at what it does. The singles are pretty good, lyrics are crazy bad. Very of the time production sometimes ruined it for me. Too much Dx7 and gated drums.
meh
Big, loud and dumb. Not a guilty pleasure. This was all over the place in my grade 11 year and it has not aged well. Aerosmith are one of those unfortunate bands that were better when they were on drugs (Toys in the Attic, Rocks) than when they were clean and sober.
Some fun tracks on here but had me wanting to listen to 1984. The singles off this; Janey's Got a Gun, Love in an Elevator, The Other Side are why you're probably here (provided you bought this in 1989) but I like Don't Get Mad, Get Even a fair bit.
It has a few memorable, cheesy songs that I enjoyed singing along to, but the rest is forgettable. Pump marks the beginning of Aerosmith’s slide into smarmy, cookie-cutter ballads.
more like this album needs to die before I hear it, amirite? I kid. This is fine. The singles are good.
Waste of time
i’m too young to have witnessed aerosmith in real time so i mostly associate these songs with my lanky seven year old self getting thrown around at the aerosmith themed roller coaster at disney world
This was the album I learned how to use a CD player with when I was a kid. When my dad got our first CD player, this was one of the albums that came with it. Since it was their most current release at the time, I’d play it every morning until my mom finally got out of bed. But now, other than those nostalgic memories, the album doesn’t have much left to offer me. I overplayed it as a kid, and with every radio station playing these tracks constantly, I’ve grown pretty sick of them.
Ok
I don’t really like this album.
Kind of like it more than I was expecting but would probably never listen again. Janie’s got a gun is good. 2.5 down to 2..
To the people surprised about the albums hornyness: It has a car humping an other car with the word „pump“ on it as a cover, what else did you expect! That‘s not my complaint, since hornyness has inspired great music. Still, while Aerosmith might rock the glam metal thing and the members are all capable musicians - I just don‘t manage to like this genre. „Janie’s got a gun“ is decent though.
Hard rock is very different from metal and I don't enjoy it.
2.5 Nothing wrong with it, I found it a fairly easy listen, it’s just not particularly special in my opinion. Special shout out out to Hoodoo/Voodoo Medicine Man though, which sounds like proto-grunge. That’s a good track, my favorite off the album.
Perfectly mediocre Dad rock
I can see why 𝘗𝘶𝘮𝘱 was such a big success — it’s sharp, confident, and full of big, catchy choruses tailor-made for late-’80s rock radio. But that’s also what turns me off. The ultra-polished production gives everything a glossy, commercial sheen that makes the record feel a bit sterile and overworked. It’s not a bad album by any means, just one that sounds more like a product than a passion project.
Perusrokkia muutamine hitteineen. En tidä miksi kuuluisi listalle ihmeemmin. 2/5
Pretty lame dudes
These guys are like cartoon characters by this point in their career. If I never hear another song from this album again, it’ll be too soon.
What did I do to deserve this? Not a fan.
Overall a decent sound but largely forgettable. Hoodoo/Voodoo Medicine Man is probably the most interesting song. The dulcimer parts were very surprising in what is otherwise a wall of sound. I somehow wasn't prepared for how horny Tyler was. No songs Liked.
Naja.
Kurt died to save us from shit like this.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this album cover was the gif of 2 rocket league cars humping each other. While I did enjoy the transition between Young Lust and F.I.N.E., this is from 1989?? What's up with these 1989/1990 records being either ahead of their time or holding onto sounds from the past? I think this would have gotten more of pass from me if it was released in the late 70s, but this is some hard content to listen to - musically and lyrically. The second half of the LP was better but I'm not really a fan, especially not of that harmonica.
Ah…pump. I get that this had Aerosmith’s most popular songs for strippers to dance to, and an effort to strip the pop sheen off their last record, but in the context of their classic records, many of these songs are retreads of earlier better songs. Young Lust is a watered down Toys In The Attic. F.I.N.E. Is just dumb with its honky tonk rhythm and horrifically stupid dad jokes passing for entendre. Similarly , Going Down/Love In An Elevator with its repetitive Love In An Elevator repetitive line becomes nauseating and is 2 minutes too long. I do note that the guitar on this track is excellent and Joe Perry’s playing is technically precise but more importantly interesting. Weird trivia- the video for this song shows Aerosmith walking through the then Bullocks Wilshire in Los Angeles where Angela Lansbury once worked as a teen. 5 years after the video was released it became Southwestern University School of Law, where I went to law school. The highlight of this record is Janie’s Got a Gun. I do note that the weird intros to each of these songs is a little distracting but for Water Song/Janie’s Got a Gun it actually works. Hands down this is the one track that comes close to Aerosmith’s classic hits. It’s not Dream On or Rats in the Cellar but at least it’s interesting and the guitar solo has an interesting tone - a little ragged contrasting nicely with Tyler’s more restrained vocal with fewer whiney moments. After this, the record is a cliff. This is a tough record to listen all the way through. The Dulcimer Stomp with it’s woops and dulcimer are just dumb. The Other Side signals the decline for this, the other side of the record. And I shit you not this song won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video in 1991. For context, Nirvana’s Nevermind was released on September 24, 1991. Aerosmith’s style of rock died this year. They were old and uninteresting and the second half of Pump demonstrates that Aerosmith was largely out of ideas. The power ballad, What It Takes emphasizes how insipid the once great Aerosmith had begun. Maybe it was the accordion. This is a brutal way to end a record. Tyler’s vocals are painful to listen to and this is 6:28 of misery. I immediately thought - did Michael Bolton write this turd? Anyway, other than Janie’s got a Gun and perhaps Young Lust, this is album is a dud.
I legitimately absolutely fucking hate Aerosmith.
Does it rock? Yes. Is it stupid? Also yes. I could feel my IQ going down as I listened. Would be a 2.5 star, but I'm sticking to my round-down policy. And as I learned from the Doughboys Podcast, "Love in an Elevator" is about eatin' pussy!
Aerosmith hair metal pior Aerosmith
Not my jam. One or two songs were ok
Dissapointing listening, expected more fun and melody.
Just gave a mid review to a Brian Eno album only to be handed Aerosmith's 10th album which has two cars DOING IT on the cover...... karma is real
what the eff is this sheet
Butt rock! Det er meget dumt!
Spinal Tap energi på den her plade, de lyder som liderlige idioter men det er stadig rimelig effektivt. Ikke særlig vild med singlerne.
After the couple of albums that are on this list I think I can firmly say Aerosmith is not for me. 2/5
1.6 Rock is clearly the best genre of all time. But these fucking guys. Fuck me it's so bad. I've heard of punchable faces but these are just punchable songs. They just come across as such bellends. Who is enjoying this and why, it's a disgrace to rock. It's the rock version of the horrible mysognistic, egotistical rap that everyone seems to love. The only thing saving this from oblivion is Janies got a gun isn't that shit, love in an elevator is slightly catchy if you forget you know English, and there are worse genres out there that this list dutifully covers. But fuck Aerosmith.
#701. Super cringey cock rock, and also Steven Tyler's voice is terrible. This album has i think 4 top 40 hits, which should get it at least 3 stars, but I'm going to round down because I'm a hater. 2/5: boo! Your album is bad and you should feel bad.
Best Song: Dulcimer/The Other Side. The bari-sax carries a lot of the weight here. Worst Song: Going Down/Love in an Elevator. A song whose whole existence is built around this one gimmick, and the gimmick is stupid. Overall: The whole album feels like an exercise in missing the mark. It tries to be sexy but ends up just being horny in a way that feels sexually predatory. It tries to be slick, but it comes off as greasy. Music that makes you feel like you need to take a shower.
Straight booty with one good song I think
Malheureusement pas trop ma came, mais objectivement c'est pas mal. 2/5
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Water Song/ Janie's Got A Gun, Dulcimer Stomp/ The Other Side I barely got two listens in. Not because I didn't have time. Simply because I don't really care for Aerosmith. Never was a fan of what I have since come to understand is the Glam Rock genre. A song here or there isn't terrible; in fact they have several quite good songs, I just can't bring myself to listen to Aerosmith for extended periods of time like I can other bands and genres. I can't throw on a Glam Rock radio station and listen to this for 3 hours in car ride.
Janies got a gun and then trash
Only know the one single from this. Can't believe he was in his forties when they made this. Only Janie's Got a Gun is surprising at all. The rest is fine, what you'd expect, Love in an Elevator is plenty 80s soft metal for me. It's ok. Won't listen again.
Lyrics by David St Hubbins. This was a struggle, there’s better Aerosmith albums. 2.1/5.0 Best Track: Love In An Elevator
Brings nothing interesting to the table, especially for its time. At least imo
Pump down the volume. 2/5
This is the Aerosmith I don't like. Toys in the Attic is the good stuff. This is lame. I like sex, hell even more than the next guy, but the constantly talking about it in every context is boring and juvenile. Hell, even the trucks are fucking on the cover. This doesn't go hard...
Eh, it's not a bad record but i'm not a fan either. I don't usually care too much about mixing quality but honestly this album is deafening at times. The gated drums, the compressed ass guitars, the complete lack of dynamic range... It passes as a radio friendly mix but it surely tires me as a headphone listener. Even those gang vocal call and response bits, they just highlight the worst stereotypes of eighties hair metal. What captivates me about bands like Van Halen and Twisted Sister is the raw energy they provide, it is fun to headbang, move around and sing along to their shit. "Pump" sounds like it was made to play in football matches. Most of the tracks are slow and just exhale a fake swagger that Tyler's hoarse vocals just does not provide. "F.I.N.E", "Don't Get Mad, Get Even" and "Voodoo Medicine Man" are some examples of pretty bad offenders. There sure are some fun songs, I love the way they did the chorus on "Love in an Elevator", "What It Takes" has a pretty emotional performance and some actually good writing and of course "Janie's Got a Gun" is a classic. Shoutout to "Young Lust" too, very fiery intro tune. Eh... If i need a kicker i'd rather bump 1984.
Not a big Aerosmith fan
Well executed, but super dates and childish. Aerosmith at their best are more than sexy sex songs about sexy sex.
Ok 2/5
It's Aerosmith, you know exactly what you're going to get. I've always found them a bit overrated though if I'm being honest, and this album is a fairly middling effort from them. Nothing wrong with it really - I don't mind a bit of cock rock once every so often, but there's not enough right with it either to even vaguely justify its inclusion in the 1001.
Aerosmith is usually pretty enjoyable, if not the most exciting or groundbreaking music to listen to. Unfortunately, this album fell a bit flat for me and I'm not sure why.
Did not like at all.
В копилку к Guns N' Roses. РРРокешник, выверенный и просчитанный, "стиль рррок".
They are obviously very talented musicians but they are also very obviously trying to chase and capitalize on trends and make as much money as they possibly can (some would argue good for them), but it just comes across as so disingenuous across their discography. I did not need 47 minutes (save a couple minutes) of Steven Tyler singing songs about sex in high school, how much he wants to have sex, and how much he just needs to bust. He’s a great vocalist, Janie proves he can be versatile lyrically, the rest of the album does not. Joe Perry is complicit in creating this garbage but his guitar playing is worth listening to this. It is astounding that there was a cultural moment where this was so good that they had a themed ride in a Disney park. Say what you will about grunge but thank God it nuked this sound and attitude.
Has its moments but 80s American rock doesn't do it for me
Big hair wanky rock bullshit. If i never hear this again it is a good thing. its not so unbearable that i cannot listen, but very close. 2 stars
picks: janie’s got a gun, what it takes
Not really an Aerosmith fan but I respect the song writing. Kinda.
Not my favorite, honestly. Steven Tyler really likes young girls, and he wants you to know it. Love in an Elevator is cool though. You can really hear the Bon Jovi producer putting his fingerprints on this sonically. I just don’t care for it much
Aerosmith is so sleazy its easy to forget they have some great musicians. And they can write a damn good rock song. But listen, man. I'm not 14 anymore. These lyrics just don't cut the mustard. Does Steven Tyler just walk around with notebooks full of double entendres? How many ways can you refer to your dick without saying the word "dick?" He sings about how horny he is for 15 minutes then pivots to a song about a girl taking revenge on her dad for molesting her? WHAT!?!?! I shouldn't knock it so hard. It achieves what it sets out to do, so on its own term it's a very good record. I'm just too old for this shit. TWO STARS
This album smells like teenage boy.
It's Aerosmithy. Not much more to say. You know what you're getting.
Sleazy 80s-90s rock. I'm familiar with the hits but really couldn't enjoy this album knowing Steven Tyler's gross history.
Cool band, not my album
My first reaction was to dismiss this entirely and I did not listen to the whole thing but then saw that there are a few good songs on this record - Janie's got a gun for one. But I have not space in my soul for Aerosmith. I do love Liv Tyler tho, so Steven Tyler did one good thing for the world.
solid layered sound and real rock. unfortunately the lyrics and meanings did not live up to the greatness of the musicality
Used to love it but guess I grew up
A few nostalgic hits, but not good nostalgia.
I think I just don’t like Aerosmith.
Sonic mush if I’m being honest
Aerosmith is not good. There were a couple ok songs on here but I don't and never will appreciate their sound.
I had a pretty decent run of album recently and I had a good feeling about todays album, but when I refreshed this page and saw this album I think I got some kind of psychological damage. There was a time in my life when I thought Aerosmith were one of the best hair metal bands, now I just can't stand them or any hair metal for that matter. They definitely have worse music, but I still didn't really enjoy this. If you like Aerosmith you'll like this, if you don't you won't. Mid 2.
Over-produced hair metal crap. Two stars.
Very of the times. It's "in-offensive", but still not the kind of rock I want.
Kinda okay, had a vibe of listening on a shitty speaker in a shitty man cave garage
It has its qualities. But contrary to my 16 year-old self, I don't and can't appreciate them any more. This is all much too dad-rock for me. My 16 year-old self also hadn't realised how much of this album, including the cover, is really about sex. Not sure if that lack of awareness at 16 is reassuring or not.
My immediate reaction when this popped up..."Oh god..." Tenish songs later and I still think that response is justified. Really horny with some interesting surprises. Was hoping it was gonna be even hornier. 2 out of 5 horns
Meh. Not my favorite album by not my favorite band.
The hits are familiar and good but not much else to interest me on this album. Don’t Get Mad, Get Even was a bit more bluesy and interesting.
even by the standards of aerosmith they were really in their bag here. indulgent. over the top. too much. fine for the most part.
Favorite song: going down/love in an elevator. Overall socre: 4.3/10
I’m not old or horny enough for this album. Aerosmith is a worse version of your favorite rock band. And, if you’re gonna call this the album with your “serious” material, maybe don’t make the cover two trucks fucking.
some dumb fun here and there, nothing much, but I expected to like it less so I guess there's that
One listen was plenty for me.
Is this better than I expected an Aerosmith album from 1989 to be? Yes, but that doesn't mean it's good.
Fart noise
Nah, I could've gone to my death without hearing this. Janie's Got A Gun was alright, though.
Eh. I like love in an elevator.
About as dull as rock gets with Steve Tyler’s grating voice on top, not for me
I have a decent tolerance for Aerosmith in small doses - which is handy, since I married a Gen X white guy who loves listening to classic rock stations in the car - but an entire album is a bit too much. Plus there's that thing where Steven Tyler is a shit human, and his vocals aren't even that good. Yeah, there's a couple decent tracks on here, but making myself listen to the whole thing was annoying. I save one star ratings for albums I hate, and I don't outright hate Pump... but it's a fairly low 2.
meh
It's funny - the good ones are really good, and the meh ones are really meh. Maybe I've been too influenced over the years hearing these on the radio - I've become biased to them??
Sounds and feels like 80s in all possible non-appealing ways. Before this I haven't liked Aerosmith and this experience didn't give new perspective. Mostly bored and that feeling started already on second track.
cringe but some bangers
I’m into a lot of the big dad rock bands, but I have never liked Aerosmith. On paper this is something I’d be down for, but the whole product does not come together at all. I can’t pinpoint why, either. I’m not really into sleaze and I find Steven Tyler highly annoying, so I guess there’s two factors. Best song: Janie’s Got a Gun
Really vapid, except for Janie's got a gun.
This falls into the category of a band that I listened to a lot in the 90s but haven't listened to once since and honestly, can't imagine ever being into it. I know people love Aerosmith, but it just feels so cliche.
Never liked Aerosmith and still don't.
One of the most overrated bands of all time.
Some of the 70s albums are great but this is just bullshit hair glam metal bollocks. Disappointing.
