Muy bueno.

This was a gem - had heard of the band but never given them a try. Seriously good - bass playing dominates, guitar is stabbing everywhere. Love like Anthrax is a great closer. Nothing lazy about this - always something to listen out for.

This was great. I hadn't heard of this before. I liked this late 70's punk/post-punk stuff that doesn't sound too much like the Clash or Sex Pistols. Wonder why these guys didn't make it bigger?

Gang of Four is one of the most successful and influential punk bands to come out of the 70s punk scene in England. Their raw sound combines brash guitar solos, precise base lines, and intricate drum rhythms to create an energetic, driven sound. Jon King's vocals riff on Marxist theory and societal problems, adding a social relevance to their work, and ensuring their influence among anyone listening. Entertainment! is the first album from the band, and established their sound as a central figure in punk music.

I thought this was just going to be your average English new wave band. It's so much more: Politically charged lyrics, impressive musical chops and musicality and interesting. Recommended.

One of those missing link albums! Nice sparse very tight new wave instrumentation and vocal delivery . Demands attention, you can't really read a book whilst listening. Razor sharp angular rhythm guitar stabs , very clever

Punchy!

Happy to have discovered them. This is a fun sound.

1979 Genre: Post-punk, dance-punk, art punk Really great. Didn't know anything about this album before now. Standouts: Damaged Goods, Ether, Natural's Not in it, Not Great Man, Return the Gift, At Home He's a Tourist, 5.45, Anthrax 4.25

Liked this a lot better than I thought. Every song pretty much sounds the same but it’s good. Great bass and guitar. Last song is bleh.

Catchy, the second half was disappointing but the first half was so enjoyable it gets a 4 from me.

“The Indian smiles, he thinks that the cowboy is his friend. The cowboy smiles, he is glad the Indian is fooled. Now he can exploit him.” That text is the first thing I saw on the cover before I even started listening to this. And what a way to get introduced to an album. I never realized how amazing it feels to listen to genuinely good music after not doing so for a while. In the words of Gordon Ramsey, “Finally, some good fucking food”. I love how unabashedly weird dance-punk tends to sound. This album is fun, but also weirdly professional, and definitely intense. And this is probably one of the best places to start as an introduction to the genre. Because other artists I love who have pushed the genre forward and modernized it, like LCD Soundsystem, clearly take inspiration from Gang of Four. The way the bass and guitars are intertwined with each other, and play over each other like a bundle of tangled up wires makes for a listening experience that is never boring, even if the album is slightly one note. But like I said, this is intense, but it balances that out really nicely by having a sense of lightheartedness. If you combined all of the best parts of Television and Talking Heads, you would get this album. The most directly intense song is the closing track, and it is both the best and worst song on the album. It starts off with this masterful distortion, and I really saw potential for a drop into a cool song, but it fizzled out quickly into mostly just talking with some bass and a repetitive drum beat. Not the best way to end the album, but overall this is a really well executed record that helped push the post-punk genre into an even stronger place. I stand by the fact that 1979 was a killer year for music. Rating: 8/10

Rating: 8/10 Great album overall. Really enjoyed the experimentation throughout the album while having a punk rock foundation. There were a lot of catchy riffs and melodies throughout, the guitar and bass riffs were a highlight in particular. The production was also great, really stands out amongst the other punk rock groups at the time. I did not always like the ideas that the band implemented but this album is unique enough that it is still great to listen to from start to finish. Favorite songs: Ether, Natural's Not In It, Not Great Men, Damaged Goods, I Found The Essence Rare, Glass, 5.45. Worst song: Guns Before Butter.

It's just a really great post punk album. Not five stars because the highs are just so much higher than the forgettable songs, but there aren't a lot of forgettable songs on here.

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Return the gift, Outside the trains don’t run on time, It’s her factory, Damaged goods

post-punk. está bien.

Exceeded my expectations as a post-punk album.

Skills

Thought this was good. Like post punk but hadn't heard of this band. A bit like The Stranglers and Joy Division in parts which isn't really surprising. Pretty good overall.

Before listening to the album Entertainment, I couldn't have told you what kind of music Gang of Four plays. As I listened I the backing music and arrangements reminded of Devo and mid-career Talking Heads, and some of the vocals reminded me of Madness or The Squeeze. I'm not a regular listener of punk. Around the middle of the album my ears were getting tired of the discordant sounds. "Guns Before Butter" was my least favorite track. But by the end of the album Gang of Four had grabbed my attention again. The album finished strong. "Natural's Not in It", "Not Great Men", and "At Home He's a Tourist" were the tracks I rated the highest. I might not do it often, but I could listen to the album again.

I need to be in a certain mood for this, but when I am, I really like it. Damaged Goods, especially. Return the Gift got too repetitive. I don't love how the vocal approach is so similar to other bands in the genre. LOVE the bass guitar. Drums are great, too. Can't listen to this on loop all day, like I do with most albums.

Cool early punk album.

i dig this, reminds me of a band i used to listen to as a teen, Maximo Park - they were definitely inspired by this album

Suuuper fed, virkelig funky men også virkelig punket

Godt punket! Fed lyd 👌

I liked this, bit like the strokes

Album: Entertainment! Artist: Gang of Four Year: 1979 Genre: Post Punk Number in list: 441 Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Really decent listen. I don’t usually listen to punk or post punk but this one was a fun listen. Really upbeat, had me having a bit of a boogie in the middle of a supermarket aisle! Fave song: I Found that Essence Rare Would I listen again? Absolutely

Tuntuu kuin olisin kuullut tämänlaisen levyn jo vaikka kuinka monta kertaa mutta tämä on kyllä hyvää. Parhaat: Not Great Men, I Found the Essence Rare. New wave punkkia

My apologies. I was not familiar with your game.

Nothing to fault here, loved the vocals, the lyrics, the angular guitar, the bass. I think this would only improve given repeat listens. Although Damaged Goods stood out, I think that's more a case of it simply being slightly more accessible than the rest of the album.

Would I listen to this album again? Probably. First time hearing the full album? Yes. Were there any songs I skipped? No. Comments? I really enjoyed this album. Favourite Songs? At Home He's A Tourist. (It is very hard to choose though)

‘Lovely stuff! Not my words, the words of Shakin’ Stevens’ 3.8 Great guitars and amazing bass lines!

Jú, mjög töff. Mikið getur þetta óræða heiti "post-punk" falið í sér misgott stöff. Hér eru hvassir gítarar í aðalhlutverki, svolítið á undan sinni samtíð, rytminn fjölbreyttur og fer næstum útí fönk, og bassinn melódískur á köflum. Góð læti, gott stöff.

So very ahead of its time. Sharp guitar sound. Bass is very forward. Lyrically punk.

Strong 4

Kinda loved this. Giving it four stars, but I suspect repeat listens may bump it up to a 4.5 or 5.

This was alright. Sounds a lot like a lot of the music I like from that era.

Enjoyable! A little repetitive but I enjoyed the subtlety. Kind of surprised this music is not more prevalent within pop culture considering how many bands were clearly listening to them.

Zanimljiva stvar. Ne predug.

Ashley liked it. I found some songs a little chaotic, but liked it overall.

good for a punk rock album

Overall a fun experience. Took a moment to get into it but after 2/3 songs I really started enjoying the rest.

sick. ill definitely revisit this. sick bass and drum movements. layering of off-time vocals worked really well. Guerrilla war struggle is a new entertainment

Jagged, quirky and fun. 3.5 rated up to 4.

Gang of Four stars!

Sharp, spiky, era defining.

I enjoyed this slice of post punk. I like the guitar tone - very trebly. Most enjoyable songs are "Damaged Goods" and "I Found That Essence Rare".

This sounds like an album from the early 90's, late 80's at the latest. Amazing this angular sound originates in the 70's. Love the alt rock vibe.

Whoa, super cool new find. How’d I miss this before!?

Funk som inte är funk när den är som bäst.

This list has exhausted my taste for British punk and post-punk quite a bit but this a cut above - tighter music, better lyrics, and if that British bloke-yawping vocals thing is still in force, it's less intrusive and tempered by a bit of almost-harmony.

-Didn’t write a BL- AL: Very familiar with Gang of Four & Andy Gill’s work. Never listened to the album the whole way through but I’m glad I did. Very solid writing and unique sound cutting through. FT: “Ether”, “Damaged Goods”, “Guns Before Butter”, “Contract” 4/5

Zamn!!! De va nice album!

Beast! Inte ett särskilt glädejefullt album så idk hu mycke ja kommer lyssna igen men de e xoolt o hard

Would have loved a lot more when I was younger.

Post-punk perfection

25th May 2023 Listened during the day while working from home. Busy work day with hypnobirthing in the evening. I liked this, indie punk in its purest form. Interesting they were seen as so influential, especially to people like Frank ocean.

It's a perfect amount of dissonant to make me want to hate it but ultimately needs to be loved. The timeless of Post Punk is something else.

Punk with a dance beat, or funk with a jangly guitar and British accent… I’m going to call it pfunk. Not to be confused with P-Funk. But pretty fun stuff and worth another listen.

Crazy record, with dub, funk, rock and pop influences heard on here. Its stuffed within an inch of bursting, but I love for that. A great record.

Grungy alt rock

Very much enjoyed this one of the few punk/post punk things I've heard that feels influenced by Joy Division, will spend more time with this in the future.

Gang of Four drag post punk into the future and in the process create something almost timeless. Brash and cynical.

Leuk album, lekker energiek, ik denk wel dat hij snel gaat vervelen na meerdere keren, maar dat zien we wel.

Unbelievably influential, so many angular indie bands owe so much to gang of four. Loads of my favourite bands take cues from them and the Futureheads lean on them heavily so Sunluns finest have a lot to thank them for! The album itself was great, stands up well against all of its 00s indie offspring. Only listened to bits and pieces before this but will delve deeper.

The album flew by. A 3.5 for me. On repeated listens, maybe towards a 4, but I've given more for less. At Home He's a Tourist probably my favourite.

Wasn't sure at the start but by the end really enjoyed it Reminded me of the clash. I recognised at home he's a tourist and damaged goods

Solid 70's punk.

Это довольно таки специфичная музыка, и она многим может не понравится, но если вдруг зайдёт, то откроешь для себя целый мир музыки в виде этого альбома. Возможно лучший дэнс-панк.

Great danceable punk album. If you had to pick one main influence for LCD Soundsystem and the DFA label, this would be a strong candidate.

Tough and knotty and also seething and sizzling. Playing is tight and arrangements are lean, which one mostly digs, and most licks blaze with a purity, with relentless energey from the backbeat and the sound is pristinely clear. See vamping riffs of "Not Great Men" for highlight. Unrelentingly edgy but also well crafted – see "I Found That Essence." Does adding funk to punk make it post-punk? Certainly it's artier and more politically engaged (apparently) than most of those other genres, but it's more spiky than groovy. Downside is that it can feel a bit one-note, for all its future influence, and there's a pretty severe lack of flow.

This album sent me down a rabbit hole of how the British pronounce "migraine." Consensus seems to be that the pronunciation featured here ("mee-grain") is more prevalent among the posh. Interesting. Best track: I Found That Essence Rare

now this is the kind of post punk I like. pretty amazing album overall, though I think it barelyyyy misses the 5 star mark from me this time.

This is a primo post-punk album. All herky-jerky and driving. I love it. It's a 4.5 star album for sure, but I don't quite think it hits those 5 star heights.

I have always loved Gang Of Four, but also always felt there is something missing. Maybe humour? The seriousness is warranted (now more than ever) and the sentiment strong, but maybe we need some light to go with the shade? These are some of the greatest bass lines to ever walk the earth, and their lyrics are a welcome antidote to our commodified world, but I have to be in the mood for this - these songs never really make me smile.

I loved the bass playing on this. Add in the guitars that poke you in the face, plus some personal and political crossover in the lyrics, and you've got a great album.

Yes, yes, yes! Funky guitar work, highly interesting lyrics and subjects. Has that punky vibe, but without the unpleasant screaming. Really enjoyable.

Nytt for meg, og veldig kult!

I remember hearing Love Like Anthrax on the original Doublejay & deciding I had to have it, so went out & bought this album. The other standout track was At Home He’s A Tourist. In 2019, I bought tickets to see them in March at the Manning Bar, but Andy Gill took ill & the tour was postponed, but they eventually came in November, just before Covid. They really were terrific & trax off this record featured heavily. Gill sadley passed away the following year. This record was very influential & somehow still sounds fresh.

This is such a great record. My favourite track is Natural's Not In It, but Damaged, At Home He Feels Like a Tourist, and Love Like Anthrax are also bangers. This has been copied a million times since it came, but it still sounds fresh, energizing and surprising to me. Most of the copyists still can't touch this.

Awesome

Solid little post punk album

Vet album, ga ik zeker nog een keer luisteren!

“Damaged Goods” is one of the catchiest songs I’ve heard from this list of albums so far.

First time hearing this! I dig it.

it was

Never listened to this whole album before. The hits are great and the rest is solid. Maybe a little repetitive - they really leaned on that opening strummy rift - but a quality album.

Only recently come across Gang of Four, love this album, such an accessible and danceable post punk album, close to giving this a 5, but maybe just slightly repetitive come the end of the album.

very cool to me

This is neat proto-punk, hard to believe it's from '79. I enjoyed it the whole way through even if it's probably not going in permanent rotation for me.

I was really surprised by this album. Great guitar and bass. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Such a fun and challenging album. The dancing swinging quality of this post-punk record is so infectious. I've always loved this record.

Really enjoyed this album

First time listen, enjoyed. Can hear the influence this album probably had on 80s bands

Sick punk album. Best feeling ever when you find the origin of popular samples. Fave track - damaged goods

I hadn't ever listened to this entire album before. I really liked it. Gang of Four really don't get enough recognition as an early punk band.

lovelyyyyyy

Not sure how to classify, it's definitely punky and with a punch. Enjoyed this one! Saved tracks: Natural's Not In It, Damaged Goods, Return the Gift, 5.45

I don't LOVE the vocals but this goes REALLY hard

Not too long ago a song came on while riding in a friend's car. I loved the sound, really fresh to me. Who is this? Gang of Four. I don't know what song I heard, but I made a mental note to check out this band. And just as that mental note was getting lost in the shuffle, the generator finally comes through! I've had a long week of unfavorable picks that have been making me think of quitting this process. I was very pleased by this album. It's really rough around the edges, but the sound is tight. I liked several songs and the others were good too. I'm looking forward to checking out Solid Gold (which I believe is the album with the first Gang of Four song I heard). It amazes me that I haven't come across this music before, but I'm grateful I have now. I'm certain Gang of Four will ease it's way into my daily listening.

A fine album that is very fine. A rare instance of the second half being miles ahead of the first. I like these boys! I think I'm feeling more of a 3.5 on this, but considering the last handful of ratings I've given, I have to go 4. It's better than a lot of my 3's lately.

Crazy that this punk political message is still relevant in 2023. Great album. 4/5

Owe these guys heaps for rhcp and songs like damaged goods still get me going

Yeah really good. Some great tunes and full of attitude. Could hear the ancestral DNA of so many bands in this too: RHCP, Vines, Hives, The Strokes, The Libertines. Great but not quite 5/5 as some songs too samey.

Tough call giving this a 4, but I'm trying to be harsh! It's a classic that everyone ought to listen to. Some 5/5 songs here too, also some that don't hit quite as hard. But overall I really enjoy it, I just don't find myself in the mood to listen to it much, I suppose. I'm more of a The Fall guy lol

I like quite a bit of it but it’s just not a 5/5 and I don’t know why it screams to me as something Id love but it’s still good.

Liked it a lot. Very epic guitar playing

New album to me but enjoyed it immensely

Damaged Goods is a banger! Fun album. Nice low-key punk rock.

good energy, love the flat nature, should have listened to more of the lyrics; excellent listen. need more early post-punk in my life.

Used to love these guys a few years ago, never got into much past this album but I've always loved it. Damaged Goods is a timeless song, for what it is I think the album itself is pretty timeless. Has a style that will never go out of fashion and they nailed every aspect.

this was a stunning album on first listen... so pointy, and almost unapproachable? I keep thinking about pointy towers and brutalist architecture when I hear this album. I gotta say that I enjoyed the lyrics as well... Never too on the nose for me, maybe it's in the delivery. I feel like I'lll return to this album. Great morning punk listen while buying groceries at the co-op! To quote Charlie, "I feel like this should be 4 stars, but I can't exactly point to why." 4/5!

Too long for an album that was innovative, but noisy rather then musical. Highly influential, much more so than most 'influential' albums, but overstays its welcome by about 10 to 15 minutes.

Nice old school punk

Good stuff

More loved than lovable, but still pretty great.

They were a good band adding to the sound from the late 70s. Yeah the album's not as good as the albums the Police or The Clash were putting out then - all those albums are 5s - but it's better than a lot of other decent albums from that era.

The scratchy guitar, combined with the bass and drums deliver such punch. And the lyrics you don't forget easily. It's a fantastic debut album. Too bad the band blocked efforts to make it more of a success.

Punk is usually a pass for me, but this album feels really well produced and less gritty. Perhaps this makes it less punk, but I like it.

Dance and punk?

Super catchy, energetic punk greatness

Good wholesome shouty fun

Good stuff.

Great, hadn't listened before, enjoyed this! Damaged Goods was a stand out for me.

Classic. One of post-punk's greats. Like Wire but catchier and funkier. Also, I've never heard anyone pronounce migraine as "mee-grain". Might have to give this a 1/5 because of that. Smh

Great stuff. "Damaged Goods" is a certified banger. The Clash meets Devo.

Awesome angsty post-punk. Lots of spiky riffs and shouted vocals. The music crackles with restlessness, sexual frustration and anti-establishment feelings — they really capture an energy. The songwriting is really strong too. Highlights: “Ether,” “Natural’s Not In It,” “Not Great Men,” “Damaged Goods,” “I Found That Essence Rare,” “Glass,” “5.45” (I like the theme of this one - how tv turns war into entertainment)

Trendsetting new wave

One of the most brilliant and most influential albums of the 70s full of extraordinary songs and also a very recognisable hit (Damaged Goods). Great tracklist and impressive project!

Listened Before? N Good solid album from post-punkers Gang of Four. I've never taken the time to listen to them before and I really enjoyed this one although I'm still a bit confused what separates punk from post-punk especially in the British sense. *shrug* Maybe just the poppier beats, but The Clash was big on those... Added to Library: N Songs added to playlist: Damaged Goods

Very punk album but with a twist. The album has more of a rock feel and influences from other styles (dance? funk?) that makes it interesting enough. Not a fan of punk but this was a decent listen. Fans of punk will likely love it.

They're not a name that comes up all that often, but I really like this. Four stars for Gang of Four

Tried listening to this album a few years ago and I didn't care for it. Listening again, the whole way through, something clicked with me. The beats are choppy, yet infectious, the songs are interesting and the guitar sound is amazing! I don't know what I was expecting previously, but this is music I should have been listening to. Really really enjoy this record and glad I gave it another go! Entertainment, yes!

Damaged goods is such a great song !!!

I can't truly forgive the way they pronounce "migraine" but that only slightly diminishes my enjoyment of this album. Gang of Four rocks hard without trying to do too much. I love how the instruments make space for each other, bouncing back and forth in a head bobbing polyrhythm.

For an album released in 1979, the music in this album is incredibly relatable to a modern audience. 90s pink, surf rock, and ska see their origins here. Strong bass lines and rhythmic distorted guitars are the hallmark of this album. It’s easy to see how exactly it has influenced modern music. Standout songs are Damaged Goods and I Found That Essence Rare.

a relisten for me. Haven't gone through the whole album for a while, but always love 'damaged goods' and 'i found that essence rare'. this is a definitive post punk album, each song captures that post punk sound - slashy guitar, gorgeous basslines and politically driven lyrics. The cover is really good too, perfect visual of what the album is all about. Very good album but i usually only come back to one or two songs, and there's a few that are filler. nonetheless, a very good album to introduce newbies to the post punk sound.

5/12, 42%

it would be nice to hear what gang of four would have to say about our new prime minister that has been thrust upon us by the old pensioners of kent. i don't think they'd be happy, but then who is? should have been SHACK for PM. he doesn't fool any indians.

The musical equivalent of someone scared of wasps doing that half run/walk, flapping and turning their back up as they cower in public, nonsense. It looks so silly and brings me great joy.

Gang of Four saw what was happening with the ever evolving musical landscape and thought "Maybe there shall be movement". Entertainment sees the band brandish their mission statement with intent and the urge to groove, with the angular spike of post-punk mingling with the funk flavors that flow through them. An essential album of the era and a statement only they could make. Favorites: Ether, Natural's Not In It, Not Great Men, Damaged Goods, I Found That Essence Rare, Contract, At Home He's a Tourist, Love Like Anthrax.

This too is a classic punk album

Was in the mood for this style of music and really enjoyed it.

Sharp catchy riffs, great bass lines, variety in beats and no bs songwriting. Really ahead of it’s time. Was gonna say it’s a bit long but the last three tracks in Spotify are bonus so minus those it’s really well paced. Maybe I’ll finally get into post-punk if more albums are as good as this one.

Classic English post punk, good album. Feels slgihtly directionless and less emotive than some of Gang of Four's other stuff. "Damaged goods" is my highlihgt. "at home he's a tourist" is jokes too.

This was a pretty fun listen. The lyrics were interesting and the drums were great. Not sure if ever listen again but there was a lot more happening musically than a lot of punk rock from this time.

I really enjoyed this a lot especially the guitars. You can see how this band influenced so many others. It sounded like something I wish I heard more of today.

Gang of Four is right up my alley....This is my Saturday get shit done around the house type of music. I was only 4 when this album came out and so I really missed this wave for the most part. at that time if it wasn't on MTV I didn't hear it. There were glimpses and whispers. Now in my late 40's I get it.

Haven’t listened to a lot of post punk, very cool to hear the inspiration for more modern punk

Early punk kind of reminiscent of the Ramones with the bouncy guitar riffs. I think this might be the band that does the theme song for the show Misfits but I could be wrong. Good album, fun listen and energetic, would be great driving music.

This is the sound of a dystopian Thatcherite nuclear winter - the sound of an sinking Argentinian destroyer and the soundtrack to that future striking coal mining automatons would funky dance to. To me subjectively this is an awesome album - influential to me on a musician level and most of my favorite musicians probably count this band as an influence. Lovely.

Excellent, particulièrement Damaged Goods. Une belle découverte.

Entertaining!

Banger of a punk album

Slaps, will listen again

Didn’t listen that closely but really liked and would listen again

Very good traditional punk album from a band I've never heard of.

This is pretty great but will need a bit more brain power to fully comprehend. Faves: Natural's Not In It, Not Grat Men, Damaged Goods.

I can hear a lot of modern bands in this. Sounds like they would fit in with any time period between 1980 and 2000. Heavy Clash vibes

Zipped through this four times today. Fun!

I wasn’t crazy about the thought of post-punk… why? No good reason. I started this up with a negative attitude. Fortunately Gang of Four is pretty great and melted all that away quite quickly. I very much enjoyed bopping along to this. Clever lyrics, great songs… Glad to have my preconceptions dispelled!

envie de sauter partoutttt par contre on se passe de la deuxième moitié

Very happy to have discovered Gang of Four

Dance punk!

I actually really enjoyed this and it was a total Friday vibe when I listened to it. Luke was very happy to have it on it the flat - apparently a big thing for him a uni. Really loved the fun punk vibes and would listen again

I love it. Gang of Four are great. I don't really listen to them by choice a lot but they are so deep rooted in my favourite genres that Spotify plays them to me all the time and I'm always happy with that.

Great stuff

Great early punk

Mejor disco Post-Punk? Seguramente. Si te gustan The Rapture, Radio 4, Franz Ferdinand, We Are Scientists o Bloc Party, tienes que escuchar este disco de 1979!!! Y "Damage Goods" es imprescindible para entender gran parte de la música de principios del siglo XXI.

Reminds me a lot of the Clash. I mean, I guess that's the point? Still, liked the album a lot. Definitely a band I am going to have to listen to more. A good 4.3 for me, close to 5 stars. Really digging it, along with all the things they drew on.

7/10 pretty good punk album.

7/10. Enjoyed it a fair bit while I was walking around listening to the first half, kinda started to annoy me when I was listening and studying.

Entertaining. 7/10

This was pretty good

Punk-rock psicodélico.

post-punk. está bien.

I like this… very basic straight up post punk. Some catchy numbers!

Muito bom.

I’ve previously discovered I like proto-punk and now I know that I also like post-punk. Gang of Four gets to stay.

Dope af

Interesting album. Liked most of the tracks.

nice post punk rock album

Great energy. New wave punk vibes.

Nice energy punk.

Tight, tight, thight!!! Not entirely my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the creativity and energy.

Great album. Really enjoyed it and put on my list for sure

Spiky, angular, brilliant.

Great!

This one was pretty good. I don't think I've ever heard of them or any of the songs before.

Nice grunge

271021 15:36 3.5

Jako snažan i dobar album.

Echoes of The Clash, The Stranglers, Devo, and early Joe Jackson. A nice hard edge to some of the songs. Punk meets new wave meets alternative.

Ether, Not Great Men y At Home He's a Tourist excelentes canciones.

This was pretty cool

Pretty Good!!

Nice album, will check out more of their stuff

Fun, though not my usual ting

I was expecting something a bit more... punchy? IDK this was a lot more post punk than I expected. Wasn't bad but this list is a bit oversaturated. Maybe I'll give it a second listen at some point. 5/10

Dug this, cool sound and lyrics

This album stands out among my “3s” because unlike the others where I believe that there was untapped potential and not enough effort, I really think these guys were on the right track and just didn’t have the experience to do their idea justice. In another universe, this album wasn’t their debut and had enough polish to make it a 4, but we’re stuck with our universe for now.

This album was OK. I'll say 2.5, round up.

Reminded me of Devo without synths crossed with the jam. I like both bands better than this one

207. not bad

Subject matter is still just as relevant.

A nice album, to me all of the songs sound very similar. Nothing to complain about

Yet another group I have heard OF but don't remember ever listening to. (I did a lot of READING about music history, I guess.) I mentioned a few weeks ago in my review of The Fall that when I was a teenager I pretty much automatically liked anything sung in a convincing British accent that could be described as "punk." This obviously qualifies. Really like "I Found That Essence Rare."

A legendary album at the transition from punk to post-punk I have known their top songs for a while. I like the intro of the closing track Love Like Anthrax

I liked it. Mix of early punk and early new wave. The first song was really good. I may have to give it another listen as I was distracted for a lot of it. Pleasant surprise.

Empieza muy cool pero ya me fue cansando para el final, un estilo muy particular que noto como puede haber sido influencia pero creo que evoluciono 7/10

I actually enjoyed this album but I really felt like each song was missing... something. This seems like they were really onto something and hopefully figured it out in their later discography. I would say I'll listen to their other stuff, but the list has so much redundancy that I'll probably get to it organically. 3.5/5

I wasn’t really expecting anything from this but I’m glad it turned it to be enjoyable. I’ll give it a 7/10

If early REM were Joy Division, they would sound like this.

cool! 3/5

Nice. Feels like the missing link between punk and new wave - still abrasive and somewhat angry, but also cold and very bass-forward. The musicians are also clearly more competent than in the early days of punk. Worked pretty well for me, even if I didn't connect with it as much as I do with older punk bands or bleak new wave acts like Joy Division. It gets a bit repetitive after a while - all punk albums are to some extent, and I usually don't mind that much, but this one lacked a bit of energy towards the end. A strong 3 for me, almost a 4. Might give it another go one day. 6/10

I only knew them by name. There’s a bit of a Talking Heads vibe in the mix of post-punk and groove, but for me, it works much better here. The drum sound is excellent, and most importantly, the vocals still have that proper punk edge which I like. I have no idea where they went after this, but I really enjoyed this debut.

The playing is quitr cool, but I don't like the vocal and production. 3 stars

So I'm pretty sure I listened to this album yesterday, but got called away to do something before I had a chance to rate it. When I looked at my list this morning, I noticed that it was unrated and thought that was odd, because I was pretty sure I had listened to it. When I looked at the list of tracks, though, I could remember NONE of the songs there. So I just listened to it again. The funny thing is, I'm SURE I listened to it yesterday, based on the artwork, format, and comments on YouTube, but NONE of the songs in my listen today sounded anything more than vaguely familiar. And the thing is, I almost certainly ALSO heard this album multiple times back in my teen years, when it was first released. This is absolutely the type of music I was rocking to back then. So there's nothing wrong with the songs here. They sound like pretty typical angry punk rock from the late 1970s. But if I had to give a one-word review of this album? Forgettable.

Bien, entretenido. Es un sonido repetitivo pero que va bien. ME encanta la claridad de la batería

Aside from Damaged Goods, not reaaly heard much by this band until now While thre are a couple of other tracks here that have promise, I dont think I could ever listen to this album all the way through again

Franchement pas mal, me fait beaucoup penser à the clash

I was expecting a grimier piece of trash. Instead, some decent tracks I liked a lot mixed with plenty uninspiring tracks I had trouble caring about.

The creator of this list really seems to like late seventies rock bands. So far, it’s been hit and miss. To me, this is one of the better post punk records so far. It is heavy on the bass, which gives the band a funky vibe and sets is apart from less musically gifted counterparts.

ether: 7/10 naturals not in it: 6/10 not great men: 6/10 damaged goods: 6/10 return the gift: 5/10 guns before butter: 6/10 i found that essence rare: 5/10 glass: 5/10 contract: 5/10 at home he’s a tourist: 5/10 5.45: 5.45/10 love like anthrax: 5/10

Very good. 3.5

It was good

Really frantic post punk tunes.

Okay, a little funky punk. Just feel theres a little too much of that genre in this challenge

decent.

Interesting album. Some songs are a bit annoying though.

I enjoyed this more than I expected - unwisely, I read the wiki page before the music began which probably made me a bit fearful. You could easily see the influences this album had on a lot of the indie music that came out during the 80's and onwards.

HMMM parts were enjoyable

Man, who DIDN'T the Red Hot Chili Peppers rip off?!? Liked some of this, but it got repetitive. 3

Back to short "reviews", are we?

A little too angular for my liking

Sam album był okej, podiba mi sie jego okładka

When to listen: to fight the man. I like what this band stands for, I like their lyrics, but I couldn't parse out the influences that others here seemed to understand deeply. It sounded like... classic, indistinguishable, punk. Sry :/

Purchased this on vinyl some 40 years ago. Motivation similar to resolution to eat more fruit – it’s supposed to be good for you. Never got into it at the time. In pulling it out to listen for this exercise, I actually liked it much better now than I did then. Reminds me of Talking Heads, if that band completely eschewed melody. Wanted to give it four stars for good bass and drums as well as adherence to their concept, but just couldn’t make myself do it. In the end, too amelodic for my liking.

British punk

Some pretty okay british mod-punk

Not bad

Fun post-punk project. Had never heard of, and the British accent always helps.

3 stars

Really liked that. There’s a simplicity about many of the tracks, underpinned by cracking bass lines and a good vocalist too. Will add to the library and give another go.

멀 느끼지

A punk rock gem. Dissonant riffs, sharp lyrics, a great soundtrack for protesting. May not come back to this one, but happy I took the time to listen.

Está bien, siento que no tengo mucho por decir

3.5. Punk que está bueno, pero no me llama más que eso.

Feels very fresh for something that is actually from 70s

Guitar Stabs: A Love Story, by Whoever Plays Guitar in Gang of Four. This is some fun post-punk. It veers between abrasive, angular rock ("Not Great Men") and exciting, hooky rock ("Natural's Not In It"). Overall it works. THREE STARS

Trop cacophonique pour moi, aussi culte que Damaged Goods soit

I had forgotten about the Gang of Four. But this was an album I listened to a lot back into the mid 80's. Now it sounds a little forced rather than raw.

ehhhhhhhhh 2.5

Meh. Was fine.

This is what I meant about the sex pistols album. The music is rougher and a little heavier. If that was a 3 this is probably a 3.5

S'alright

Very influential

Have definitely heard Natural's Not In It, but had never heard this band name

Yes, this is solid and there is a slight chance I will remember to listen to it again.

Fun. I liked this.

Well, I had listened to most of the album before I realized that I accidentally had it on shuffle. So I can't speak to the tracking, but I did enjoy this little post punk journey. Angular, slightly disarming, but with rhythm and hooks that keep you intrigued. I can hear influences in a lot of modern music from these guys and their contemporaries. Not a ton of time to review today, but I will go 3.5/5

Me gustó, no es el tipo de música que escucho tampoco.

Decent left wing post punk. Hard angled riffs and time signatures. I like it but it needs a bit more variation or light and shade otherwise it can leave you cold.

Really like parts of this but it’s all a bit of a blur. Might be my fault, I should revisit. RYM: Y (#334) Saved a song: N

Another band I knew was “important” but never actually listened to before. Their songs are right on the edge between something more experimental and something poppy.

Boppin bass

Meh, fine

This album was fine enough but didn't rise to the top like some of the other punk/post-punk English music of this era for me.

This has some of the fattest, rawest, nastiest bass riffs I've ever heard. I'd like it more if it wasn't afflicted by the Punk Rock Vocalist curse. 🥀 Standouts: Not Great Men • Damaged Goods • Love Like Anthrax

A little more punk than I like but I thought their sound was pretty energised.

This is ok. Better than I anticipated. Liked Songs Added: Damaged Goods

Liked it better than I thought I would. Lots of catchy songs. Would give it 3.5 stars.

Oh so THIS is where Franz Ferdinand stole their sound from

I had previously heard of this album, but never heard it before. It's considered post-punk, but honestly sounds very much like punk to me. It's not too bad, the instrumentation has its moments, and the vocals seem a bit repetitive, but the lyrical content seems fairly interesting. I may listen again but wouldn't exactly seek it out.

Old school punk. I still content that punk is like baseball, its better live than recorded. It's not bad, but I won't come back to it

Sounds well ahead of its time for 1979, but as a listen nowadays, I find the music (that it likely inspired) more enjoyable. Faves: Damaged Goods, I Found That Essence Rare, At Home He's a Tourist

Need more listen

Groupe inconnu. =>3/5

kind of like the clash, but more melodic. I can see why it was inspirational to so many modern rock bands. enjoyed

I keep hoping for something outside of the 60s and 70s, and although this is not... I will take it. I am not going to act like I know music, or have the best rhythm, but it appeared there were some "testing it out" times that seemed a touch off beat. Along with maybe trying things that aren't instruments, and recording those sounds? I think the drummer is awesome, but had a few times I felt it fell off. All around a good album. I would recommend this to someone else just to try, but I am unsure I am running back to play this. 6.7/10

I was not feeling this album today, but I liked the 2nd half much better than the 1st. I thought G of 4 was cool in high school and I hear how they must have influenced people bc they remind me of a couple of groups that came after them : )

This is like chasing squirrels. First, you have to let them get close, but then it's on. Fully on. They jerk back and forth at an erratic, manic pace with hyped-up energy, then pause. Size you up, while being still, then it begins again. Up, down, tree to tree, then another stop and stare. Left, right, left, right, a zigzag up a tree and out of sight.
