Ne mano skonio

There's something about this album that works for me.. Fun lyrics and catchy riffs, I guess. Either way, I had a good time listening through. It's not going to change your life, but it's got that certain something that makes it worth exploring. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Natural's Not In It - Damaged Goods - I Found That Essence Rare

Some cool ideas on here and some interesting moments but I just couldn’t connect with most of it Picks up towards the end

One of the first instances of Dance Punk, a genre that is characterized for combining the energy of punk and dance inducing grooves. However, I didn't find this album to be neither excitingly energetic nor groovy. I think there are some great riffs with an undoubtedly punk sound and some catchy moments, but overall, I didn't resonate with almost anything in here ("Ether" and "I Found That Essence Rare" are very fun tracks though). It certainly is not a bad album, and I find the general ideas to be a bit interesting, well executed and unique. But as already stated, I am not crazy about it. Besides, another remarkable aspect is the social commentary in the lyrics that could not be missing in a punk associated record.

Fixe mas não me puxou muito

There’s something special in the first song. The rest are good but not as special. Definitely an interesting mix of genres and sounds though.

Enjoyable

Decent listen.

Listenable, but not mind blowing

Day 200 Funky, also found a song I’d been looking for for ages. Highlights Ether Damaged Goods Glass

I enjoyed this debut album listen from Gang of Four! This album had a little bit of everything with punk, funk, reggae and dub influences. I also picked up on an early new wave sound which I really dug. Overall, I had a good time listening to this album and I would listen to it again in the future!

Start of the post punk movement, fun to hear where it started, but other bands definitely perfected the formula

didn't really listen, not my normal music. difficult in loud enviroment

Very upbeat and a bit fun, but not really my thing. I do like the cover, though.

Good, unremarkable

Decent - very much Buzzcock Vibe

I can tell why this album is so highly regarded, but it really didn't click with me. Maybe it's one of those albums that'll take me another listen or two to understand, certainly not a bad album, though

🎧Feel like I should like this more but it just didn’t really click. Favorite track: Damaged Goods

Well, I am excited by the prospect of this. Not a band I’ve heard before but the descriptions in the reviews excite me and expecting to be pleasantly surprised… I think I just don’t understand the definition ‘Post-punk’ yet. Some of it is cheesy synths and drum machines tosh. Some is this kinda stuff and Pére Ubu. I like the latter, definitely not the former! An enjoyable album. Not blown away, and pretty spacious, but still enjoyable and experimental enough. Particularly enjoyed ‘Glass.’ Intact, maybe the final third as a whole. (3.5) nearly 4

I'd listen to the first half of the album again, but increasingly throughout it's more mixed-pleasantness instrumentals. Punk vibes in ways both fun and meh

General thoughts: Post-punk is a genre I only understood recently through Magazine. The name is misleading because we lose some aspects of punk, such as the simple structure, fast tempo, and short life; at the same time, we gain some new shades, like social critique, the gothicness, and the darkness of the sound. First, this record feels very modern, the sound feels like something that could be released in the 21st century, there's even this song 'I Found That Essence Rare' which sounds like midwest emo in the first seconds. In addition, we also have lyrics that resemble modern worries; we have anti-government, anti-war, anti-propaganda tracks, that's cool, but I also would like to point out tracks about sex life, social expectations, and monotony. About the music, great guitar, almost spasmic, but sometimes too much. On this topic, 'At Home He Feels Like a Tourist’ was a song ruined for me by this gimmick. I don't have much opinion on the rest of the band elements. Great opener, heavily underwhelming ending. A bit of repeating cliches throughout the tracklist. The worst tracks really drag the album. Kudos for the unexpected integration of what I thought was a harmonica, but was actually a melodica, which was probably seen more as a toy by the time. Outstanding song(s): Damaged Goods, Guns Before Butter Weakest song(s): Anthrax Cover: A splash of bloody red and then a strip regarding tribe exploitation, ok. I value cohesion, though. We could say the most representative track for this album -Entertainment- would be '5.45' because of the lyrics. So what's with the cover? Wouldn't something else be more fitting? Real rating: 3.375

3.5, some songs are great, others verge on grating but I would probably grow to love this album with more listens

Sounds decent until you realize every track sounds the same

I already own this.... but not sure why.... Appreciate the overall sound but thetunes don't speak to me.

noises were heard

Not my taste. Tracks to Track: Damaged Goods

Sounds like everyone else from that era

Enjoyed more and more as it went through

Well this was interesting. Sounds like an early Arctic Monkeys. Not bad!

I liked this. Not sure why it's categorized as "post" punk. Seems pretty punk to me. Reminded me of The Clash here and there. It is a bit one-note.

The first track was actually pretty cool, then it tapered off

Competent, but there must have been better albums to come out in 1979 ... right ... ?!? 2.5/5

The bass and drum duo carries this album for me, and well it should.. the guitar is all over the place, though fun at times. Vocals not overly enjoyable.

My first time listening to this entire album, and was pleasantly surprised. Not really the biggest fan of the vocals, but there's no doubt this was very influential to punk rock.

I love the spirit and the sound. But this collection of songs does little more than reinforce how good Wire's Pink Flag album really is.

Interesting how my group got into a debate about what is "punk" vs "post-punk". They have guitar but they also have poppy sounding base and occasionally keyboards, and some talking-style vocals that feel like Talking Heads. Sounds like this band was influential.

I liked this more than I expected given the timing (the 70s) and the supposed genre (post punk.) But it was largely a fun listen - like the Talking Heads with more attitude. Ultimately, it wasn't catchy enough to make it onto any playlists, but at least I got a wall of text from my friends trying to define punk vs. post punk.

I quite like the lead vocalist but isolating him as much as this album does makes him feel really dumbed down, some songs like Damaged Goods (which i've heard before ofc) and Glass give him a little more to work with and those end up being the highlights. generally it's not super interesting once you understand the soundscape. the backing(? might be the same guy) vocalist needs to be doing more to sell me on any emotion he's trying to convey whenever he appears, like he does on the final song. Highlights: Damaged Goods Glass Love Like Anthrax

an example of the power of a good rhythm section more punk to me than “post” punk, but yeah, I get it. solid album. guitars that bite. fun energy.

Still in my wheelhouse! Gang of Four is a classic Brandon band. Ahead of its time. Very reminiscent of Fugazi's debut album, which came out like 11 years later. I hope Ian MacKaye sent Andy Gill a lovely fruit basket. Also some Devo in there. Fun! And it’s nice to listen to music by a band that clearly likes The Clash even more than I do. I need to give this another listen on a day that I have more energy and more attention to give; I slept like a cumulative 3 hours across all of last night because my cat is a monster and also I was just generally vibing more with yesterday’s album. Happy new year!

Great post punk? Angular guitars.

"Oh, you probably havent heard of them. They are this really underground band that does real Rock, not the weak mainstream stuff they do today. You dont like them? No, no you just dont understand the genius"

FIN.

Moderately entertaining.

I bopped along with every song and really enjoyed the simplicity of the lyrics and music. Hit me as a fun time the whole way through.

it’s ok not the worst. If I turn on closed captions when I watch TV and see “music playing”, it’s something like this album. Not much going on nothing catchy at all, nothing terribly wrong. Someone is playing. Very mediocre singing too, which suits the album very well. This defines 3.

Ehh it was alright. If it went on any longer I probably would have gotten annoyed with it and subtracted an extra star. Pretty forgettable, but inoffensive.

Certainly an influence for many of the early 2000s post punk bands as well. A fun sound and surprisingly interesting.

Some good alternative/ post punk grooves, with interesting lyrics. However, very much of its time and I did feel it sounded a bit dated

Not for me

punk-type british stuff with some more guitar than normal.

Kind of like listening to that one band that opened for a better known artist and you thought "oh they're cool" but probably won't ever listen to again

This was alright. It was kind of edgy, but kind of annoying, I guess? I don't know, it was good, just not really something I'd listen to a lot. Three stars.

I feel like I've heard of Gang Of Four, but I don't think I'd ever listened to their music. It's pretty alright. I don't hate it, but I don't think it's an album that's going to stick with me either. It's got some avant-garde sounds that I was bracing for, but it's more underhanded, so it doesn't come off as wrong.

An influential album, but I prefer its successors.

Cool album, never heard of this before and I like it.

Nice example of post-punk for a debut album

I like the funkyness/grooviness of the album, but after a few songs it became boring to me. Not enough surprises.

Cool riffs and super fun beats.

128/1089 a solid punk album. It was a good listen that I enjoyed enough but i don’t necessarily need to listen again. I think it would have sat better with me if it were 10 mins or so shorter. 60/100

Punk with funky baselines

Not bad, a little grating at times. I guess that’s punk though. Didn’t hate, didn’t really feel the need to relisten either. I’ll probably just listen to Marquee Moon if I’m craving this type of sound.

This was a decent punkish album had never heard of these guys before but they weren't terrible!

Cool, enjoyed it over all. New artist to me. No particular song stood out to me.

pretty impressive for the time and see the influence. pretty cool

Decent collection of punk / garage rock songs. Not really my go to genre but also not bad. Overall 2.5 to 3 / 5

1979. Nice kinda post punk baselines and dischordant rifs. Weak 3 or a strong 2.

Didn't know what to expect. Upbeat, kinda of punk attitude. Enjoyed it

I don’t know. It’s just another version of the Clash to me. A lighter version or the same, again, I don’t know. It’s a decent enough album but I’m not feeling anything by listening to it. I want ground moving albums. Like, why do I need to listen to this one? Let’s go through the Checklist: Did I enjoy the album: it’s decent Will I listen to them again: not on purpose Will I recommend these guys: no Will I remember who they are in a month: no So there you have it. Choice cut: Damaged Goods

3 is fair. Damaged Goods best track.

Got a little redundant in the middle but pretty solid bookends. Ether or 5.45 the best

post-Punk/rock, he verdomme. FAVO: Natural's not it, Damaged Goods

Early bloc party feels. Its... fine

Not sure what to make of this! I think I liked it overall. But I probably wouldn’t revisit it. Damaged Goods was my favourite track. (3.5 stars)

Grew on me as I listened

Thought these were a soul band

The tunes are good, and the vibe and energy are great. It's also an interesting mix of styles. And again, the tunes are good. But notice I didn't say they were great. I can see listening to this album for the energy or mood, but the tunes are simply good, not great. So it's 3.5, rounding down to 3. (Also interesting that a British band's album art is about another country's history.)

This has some good head bopping moment but overall felt very flat musically.

For all of its undeniable influence and staple in punk music and indeed popular music history, Entertainment! might have been a more enticing listen. It really does feel like something you’d hear in a middle-aged dad’s ‘man cave’, or played in an independent record shop where the walls are stacked high with 12” rave singles and the staff are passive-aggressive, peaked-in-the-90s, know-it-all wankers. But enough about my perceived listenership. This album is great. That’s all you need for a review, really, but I’ll expand just slightly on that by mentioning its right-on and in many cases still relevant lyrics, its occasionally majorly dirgy guitar sounds, which I like best on closing track Anthrax, and for many I suppose what makes this record so lasting, the punkiness of its vocals. I’m not so much a fan, but you couldn’t really imagine any other sort of ‘singing’ here. It’s another one of those that’s well-known, influential, innovative, and maybe not all that ‘excellent’. But of course, still worth a listen, before you die.

Initially really didn’t like this one. Warmed up to it on a second listen, think I partly needed the familiarity but also think I don’t like the first few tracks very much. Once I get further in I find the tracks fun. Fav song: Return the Gift Least fav: Ether

Kind of sounds like every other punk album honestly. Didn’t move me. Had a decent sound though Specifici rating- 3.0 Fav song - I found that essence rare Least fav - love like anthrax

I had fun with this one, but the tone never struck me quite right until the closing track. That one felt the most experimental as far as sound and lyrical themes to me. I think I usually just enjoy a bit of a harder punk sound than this offered.

This was cool. I'm a sucker for all things punk. This was good. I like the kind of stripped down of each song. They also kind of play with different genres without ever going full send. I will say that every song sounds very similar. Its hard to distinguish one from the next. But I enjoyed this!

If there was ever an example of Post Punk to be had, I think Gang of Four would be a perfect example of it. Where the Sex Pistols and other punk groups were on raw energy Gang of Four does a beautiful job of showing how punk can be progressive, and artsy while still keeping its punk sensibilities. Not Great Men has a really cool jazz-bass-drums rhythm. Overall this album was good as a solo work and great from a historical blasting point with obvious influence on later bands like Talking Heads.

Random thoughts: * Punk but with funk! * I bet this was groundbreaking at the time of its release. * I can feel the influence in early 2000s indie groups like Bloc Party and Los Campesinos, etc. * They were really adjacent of Clash and also expanded on what Punk was and took it to the next level. * I put on Gang of Four radio on Spotify and it was pretty solid with many of 1001 entries (Modern Lovers, Suicide, Television) along with Devo, New Order, and the Stooges. Solid listen when in the proper mood.

It was ok

I enjoyed this. A solid listen but without a real wow factor. Likely influential on some of the bands I regularly listen to. 3.5 but on the three side.

Probably the closest to some of my actual musical tastes. I will have to return to it when I don't have a horrible headache.

The punk is definitely punking.

Not a big post punk fan but I did enjoy some of the songs on this. Feels like a less-artsy Talking Heads at points. Favorite tracks: “Damaged Goods”

I can't deny that they have influenced LCD Soundsystem, rem, and countless others, but I also can't deny that this album dragged for me. Lacks the oomph that I've been spoiled with from the bands that have succeeded them. For me, right now, this incapsulates a band that walked so others could run.

Some decent, unique riffs, some nice bass work. Way too repetitive and none of the riffs are really memorable.

Pretty decent post-pink

There's a lot of awesome, interesting guitar riffs in this one. Really solid. It's not exactly my favorite genre (punk is pretty hit or miss with me), but I thought that was pretty good for a punk album. I'd listen to a few of the tracks again. Vocals weren't the best I've ever heard either, but that's the genre and it fits with it.

So much post-punk on this list. I liked it but didn’t find it particularly memorable.

Is this a Clash-esque band? Kind of, I felt like, only less interesting. Does it sound like something from 1979? No way. Would I listen again? Meh...probably not.

I see the genre is described as Post Punk, which pleases me as I always wrongly pocketed the Gang Of Four as just a Punk band, but actually "properly" listening to to this for the 1st time today I now understand they were far much much more than this. I love the rawness of it, but for me it is far more sophisticated than punk music with a lot more depth in every track. Good stuff. Drummer Hugo recently said "A lot of the people who were influenced by us went on to make millions. I wish I had a penny for every song that sounds like ours." - that is so true and somewhat sad and unfair!

I liked this. Nothing complex. Punkish - but doesn't quite get there.

A very well regarded record. I listened 3 times to see if I would agree. Didn't quite get the huge love it gets.

It's a solid punkish rock record. Can't say much more.

No está mal este post-punk new-wavereo.

This is pretty good post-punk music, it's moody and broody just the way it should be. Unfortunately the tracks kind of muddle together. I'm probably a bit tougher on music in genres like this 500+ albums in than I was at the start of this project, but this ranks as very good, not quite great for me.

Helt okej!

Grand.

Would not buy.

I thought it was fine and forgettable.

I was introduced to GO4 via their song "I Love A Man in Uniform". This album seems very different from that songs. The tight rhythm section and guitar work is there just a little more raw. Good album.

This was edgy and cool. I liked some of the guitar riffs and bass lines. Creative lyrics. Good listen while working out. 3.5/5

Solid late 70s punk. There’s a lot of this on the 1001 list. This is better than most. But still not sure it needs to be included.

Never heard before. Love the guitar riffs on the first song. The singing kinda reminds me of The Talking Heads.

Pretty listenable punk, not my genre but this I could very much handle

This was new and unfamiliar to me. It was an interesting listen. They remind me of some other artists of this time. Overall, it was an okay album, just not one I'd seek out for myself.

Pretty good

This grew on me. Like a 3.5 if we're being accurate. A couple of songs just...rubbed me the wrong way? For some reason? But yeah, most of the album was neat.

Decent post-punk fare from these Brits. I don't know if they stand out any more than The Clash or even non-post punk bands like Madness. *shrug* It's OK. 2.75/5

Raw and jarring are what come to mind when I try to describe this. I feel like I might enjoy this more if the guitar wasn't hurting my ears. The drum and bass parts sound great. I enjoyed Damaged Goods.

Seminal punk with a few dry spells. Overall quite politically charged and these helped it overall.

Good punk album, as far as punk albums go.

this was fun and a little silly 3

This must be the inspection for modern Indie bands like Bloc Party, Beirut, etc. interesting sound but only a couple songs like damaged goods and return the gift really did it for me.

Naked a/f and a fun listen that's hard to take serious. Anthrax did a version of "Damage". Listening to a vinyl copy, 'cause clicks & pops only add to the raw. It's a 2AM car listen on an open highway in Utah. Liked "Natural's Not In It" & "At Home He's A Tourist"

6.5/10

Punk rock

Liči čak i na muziku koju volim. Ali opet mi se ne sviđa.

Type of album I wouldn’t have listened to or appreciated before this project Really punchy record. Enjoyed more than I thought

I had never heard of this band, but I'm a big fan of many of the bands they inspired. Not at all the genre I expected from a 1979 album, but also not the music I fall in love early with, especially on first listen. Great addition to the list. Will probably go back and listen again.

Has a bit of a garage-band-punk-rock sound. Electric when it hits, a bit grating when it doesn’t. There was plenty to enjoy here though, and the lyrics rock. Not sure why but it was giving me some vibes like British version of Cake mashed with Rage Against the Machine.

Estrambotico Uso potente del bajo Solos extraños

I was feeling the album, and digging the vibe and then Damaged Goods came on and I was like, oh heck yeah I know this hit. Super solid British Punk album.

A new album for me, except for 'Damaged Goods' which is a great track. Right up my street, and you can really hear their influence in a lot of great 90's and 00's music like The Hives, Bloc Party etc. Too-ed and fro-ed between 3* and 4* for this one. Probably deserves 4* given the year it came out as I can believe it was very influential, but not quite enough standout songs from two listens to justify it. 7/10

More good basslines and guitar. Overall this was fine. This also reminded me of the Strokes.

This should be exactly what I like but for some reason it didn't gel with me all that well. Its still good dont get me wrong but I didn't save any tracks and that's weird. I'll have to keep it in the vault for another day. You know sometimes your just not there for it or thinking about other shit and not giving it the time it deserves. I dont think that's what happened but maybe. Maybe the simplicity of it got me but all punk is the born from the same 4 chords. It gets a 3 but it could go higher with repeated listens

Virka litt generisk men hørte isje ekstremt godt itte

One of the few English post punk bands I didn't hate. 3.14 star

I enjoyed it, it was very punk, but a little different and a little more rock and roll. The vocals were all punk and had a very traditional vibe with that. But the guitar and drums had a little different flair. Not different enough to be amazing, but not bad.

I especially liked the music. Simplistic guitar, bass, and drums with very little effects. Just raw hard hitting riffs and some great changes. I give the music a 4. But I didn't care for the vocals. The lyrics failed to draw me in and I just didn't care for his vocals. I give the vocals a 2. So average out to a 3 for me.

There’s nothing wrong with this album but I feel like every band from 1979 sounds close to the same: Punkish snarl, claustrophobic drums, funky bass, confrontational noodling guitar that lacks feeling. Gang of Four sounds exactly like the band Television. At least The B-52’s sounded like they were trying to be different that year, even though some of these same elements appear on their first album.

I think my tolerance for post punk music has gone up as a result of this project. Or maybe there are just some albums in that genre I like more than others. At any rate, this was enjoyable enough for one listen through, and the lyrics and instrumenting were good. Solidly in 3 territory for me!

This is good (post) punk. For some reason it doesn't really gel with me like some other punk acts do, maybe it misses a bit of the rawest energy or the addictive hooks some punk songs have.

This is more college me than current me but it was kind of fun and I thought it was alright.

Not a bad listen. Entertainment! was a different sound than what I've heard over 850 albums. Post-punk usually sounds like post-no-thanks, but Gang of Four made an album that was fun and vibrant within the post-punk genre. Perhaps it was because Gang of Four was ahead of the post-punk wave? The lyrics were interesting and engaging, too.

I will be quick to admit that I was not excited to see some obscure band and album doing some subgenre of punk music. For the most part, that combination has not been a winning one on this project, at least for me. However, I was pleasantly wrong with this one. These guys are clearly punk infused and punk influenced, but there is a dance and funk aspect that permeates across this album that just brings something fresh, unique, and enjoyable. The punk ideology is still present, but with less of a focus on noisy incoherence and more of a focus on having fun. Overall, a surprisingly enjoyable listen!

Punk energy with nu wave soundscapes. Kinda like a sharper and angrier version of the buzzcocks. Instrumentation was groovy and fun, lyrics were a whiff and same with the vocal stylings. I like this, but given the praise this album has recieved I don't quite see it all. Perhaps nostalgia again, but it was alright.

An entire genre defined in album. Solid

Didn’t do a ton for me but maybe it’s just punk

Improved over time. Would be good music for a recession. FS: Damaged Goods.

How much 70s post punk is on this list?! I won't lie my heart sank when I saw this but I enjoyed it more than previous outings in the genre. 3/5 didn't mind listening but will never think about it again.

-Might listen to again for a better understanding of the album -Not my type of album but has some good songs on it -A bit of a boring listen, especially compared to other albums from that time -Best Songs: Natural's Not In It, Return the Gift -Worst Songs: Not Great Men, I Found That Essence Rare

Punk rock is pretty alright I suppose

Difficult one. Yes, I can see how this could have been 'influential' on all sorts of later artists. One might reasonably argue that this makes it 'important'. I'm not voting on that. I'm voting on how much I like and album and from that standpoint it's a middling 3/5.

I used to associate the Dance Punk genre to the New York scene of the 00's and groups like LCD Soundsystem, but appearently it has been around since the late-70's. However, as dance-y as this is, it doesn't sound anything like its revivalist counterpart, most obviously the lack of electronic instrumentation. Cool album. Key tracks: Natural's Not in It Not Great Men Damaged Goods

h: 5.45 c: return the gift

Worth it to add Ether to the playlist, gloriously sampled by Run The Jewels but to be honest, I found it a little bit monotone for the most part. Cool, sure. And I understand why it made the impact it did, building on what punk had started to achieve. But I wanted it to go further and do more cool stuff.

Great album a notorious influence on the post-punk scene in the early 2000’s.

Gang of Four- Great reference for rock bass tones. I like the melodica when it pops up. The mix and panning are kinda weird like there’s background vocal that pops in and out of my left ear and some of the drums are panned to one side. Some cool stupid noise rock grooves. Sounds like this could have been a big influence on Primus with songs like “he’d send in the army” Could hear a bit of Can’t Stop in Natual’s Not Worth It Not a fan the punk rock vocals. I like the frantic energy and the attitude of the music and the weirdness of it. I like when the drums sound really trashy. Some cool affected guitars too. Hard to describe but I feel like a lot of these 70’s hard rock and punk records must lose something in translation it doesn’t seem heavy enough in the AirPods. Favorites: contract

I dig the energy and attitude but this record kinda fell flat for me. I will probably forget about this one

Mixed response to this one. Like the energy alot, not a huge fan of the lead vocal. Probably would give it 3.5 if I could, but not quite a four.

Haven't heard of them before, not bad, better than the majority of Brit-post-punk on here.

This was a solid album. As a RHCP fan, I could definitely hear the influences, I wasn't impressed by any particular song, but the overall vibe was great.

Gang of Four - very cool! This album pumped me up quite a bit and kept me awake on the plane. I like the Crunchy riffs and mosh-able vibes. Standout tracks are: “Natural’s Not in It” and “Contract”

waiter! waiter! more mid punk please!

I think Solid Gold is a better album and belongs on this list instead of this one. I like this one enough but Solid Gold is head and shoulders above it.

generally inoffensive punk with some cool stuff here and there

This sounds like a bunch of guys coming together to make music for the first time, having fun and not taking themselves too seriously. I liked it

It's amazing how every new post-punk band still sounds like this. The only snag is that I'm kinda sick of those bands, even though this version of it is obviously very good.

A bit funkier post punk than usual, mixing a bit of punk, reggae and ska, so three of my least favourite music genres (in general). This album was almost listenable, which speaks for itself. Let's just end this list finally.

Not too memorable

Good. Almost great but not quite.

a jarring yet enjoyable punk inspired album that includes odd yet catchy guitar riffs, grating lyrics, and sharp percussion in the mix. A fun album.

Pretty good.

Reminiscent of my youth. It certainly reflects a particular time.

Pretty good post-punk, although it did start to feel like it was dragging. Favorite: 5.45 High 3?

I thought I'd like this much more. I like the sound and production of it but not so much the composition. There's 3 great songs and a lot of meh. Worth a re-listen because I like the ideas, maybe my ear needs more training for this.

A cool and good post-punk album, very forward-thinking for the genre for a 1979 release. It's not among my very favourites though. To me it seems to be trying to go down both 'the light side and dark side' of post-punk simultaneously, and the stark, gothic sounds clash with the brighter dance-punk stuff. The very popular 'Damaged goods' suffers from this, with the sour chords and vocal lines killing the danceability for me. 'Natural's not in it' is my favourite track here.

ihan chilling

Okay, couldn't get into it hugely

Pretty alright. I think I vibe with the politics more than the music though. If you had put this on and told me it was The Clash, I would have believed you. A few of the songs were pretty catchy.

Um punk indie em 1979? Quem diria hein?

Extreme politics meet stabby guitar riffs. Best tracks, for me, are Damaged Goods and I Found That Essence Rare.

Not bad, not great.

Entertainment by Gang Of Four. It's okay kinda early punk, but for me it needs more of a bite. Although I did discover my favourite punk band (IDLES) did a cover of one of there songs which I massively prefer

This was a fun surprise. I was not familiar with this group. If you're into punk, this is going to work for you. It's everything you love about punk - all the energy and the sheer, nihilistic joy - but with the added spice of funky beats. Feels a little like proto-Red Hot Chili Peppers! 3⭐️

Some good, some a bit harsh for me

I liked it OK. Maybe it’s my comparing it to all the better British punk/post-punk music we’ve listened to so far that’s not getting it that 4.

Pretty good. Good enough to listen to twice

After hearing this album I can hear why this punk rock/dub influenced album (along with The Specials debut record) was such a serious influence in the post punk scene of the late seventies and early eighties. All the bass playing on this album is fantastic, even if the lyrics reflect some truly daft political ideas. "Damaged Goods" was already in my library. 3 Stars for influence, bass playing, and that 1 punk standard.

Netter Punk Rock

Funny disc, sounds very modern.... To be punk I liked it so much...

You can die without hearing it if you want to, I promise it's okay.

Not really my jam, good songs and stuff but a bit to raw.

Just sounds like the same song is playing for 40 mins.

The sound of Gang Of Four is right up my street. Twangy p-bass, spiky guitar, and uncomplicated songs with plenty of space. But because all the tracks are like this it’s a bit dull as an album.

Cool album art. Damaged Goods caught my attention. Good track. The chili peppers owe these guys. Cool bass playing. Cool melodica playing. Solid production.

Harmi kun b-puoli menee aivan kolisteluksi, a-puoli on nimittäin erittäin hyvä! Damaged goods erityisesti.

Didn’t listen the whole way through, nothing really grabbed me. Reminded me of early talking heads kinda

Not really sure. On the one side ok, nice, good 80s music. On the other side a bit boring, predictable.

12/4/24. Very solid punk rock. Didn't realize this album was so influential by many artists I enjoy, but I definitely hear elements from this record in later music. Especially the bass parts!

two post punk albums in a row is pretty rough (the Fall before this one...) for someone who really likes melody. i can see how this band inspired 90s bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers with funky irreverence.

Albumi #119, 29.11.2024 Leedsiläisen Gang of Fourin debyyttialbumi ilmestyi vuonna 1979.

Very solid imo but nothing too special. It's very meat and potatoes, but I think Gang of Four lack the obnoxiousness of the Sex Pistols. They're obviously very influential and there's some really groovy and bouncy tunes on this that are packed with energy. Best Track: Damaged Goods Worst Track: Not Great Man

Influential, yes. Need to listen to? Probably not.

It’s pretty good, but I expected to like it more than I did. It’s interesting and I’m sure sounded innovative at the time, but I think an album like Wire’s Pink Flag, released two years earlier, sounds just as innovative and has aged better. Maybe I need more listens!

Good stuff, but not good enough. Seems like The Jam, Lite.

First track i thought I'd hate this, but turns out I actually know some of the songs. Not bad. Enjoyed it

Not really my thing. It was ok

Wouldn't mind if it came up but wouldn't necessarily go and decide to listen to it.

Good musicianship. Not sure I liked the political commentary, and it just didn't do much for me. Three stars.

This is pretty cool. I really enjoy these post punk albums. The bass on here is great and drives the melody forward. But I’m not completely won over compared to for example Joy Division, Television, or Magazine. I don’t really know what it is - but I am still really happy that I was introduced to this, and I am going to listen many more times, that’s for sure

Good baselines

Actually pretty good for post-punk nonsense. 3.0

A fine album for a Saturday afternoon.

No prior familiarity with Gang of Four. I felt fairly ambivalent towards this one. I'm giving it a 3 but it's a weak 3. Between Entertainment! and MC5's Kick Out the Jams, I'm starting to think maybe the early era of punk/punk-adjacent music isn't my favorite.

Funny how many big rock bands in the 21st century just sounds like a more vanilla version of this. While it is not something I drift towards, I appreciate the inventiveness of this.

Eh this didn't do it for me. First time listening was intriguing, and I liked it for the most part, but then on listening to it a second time I really wasn't fussed about this album. I liked Ether and Damaged Goods, but other than that the rest of the album was almost a bit boring.

Enjoyable enough. Don’t think I’d actively seek it out to listen to again.

Absolutely stunned by this one. When I read Post-Punk I get a Franky Teardrop flashabck and my stomach drops. It's definitely Post-Punk but it's weird because this was perfectly listenable. I think it's still tinnier and shriller than I'd prefer but when it finds it's more pop-oriented moments it's really well done. 3

Punky rock

Typically post punk has been one of my least favorite genres. This one definitely exceeded my expectations and I would listen to it again. I’d give it a 3.5 if I could.

This was fun, new listen for me. Felt like newer than 1979 and could have been an opening band for the Kinks and would have been a killer double bill. Loved the raw guitar sound and the silly lyrics. Not perfect l, but I can see how this was popular when it came out.

Nothing too exciting but seemed decent to me

There are some older punk albums that resonate with me, some that sound like a bag of balls, and some where I land quite indifferent. The odd thing is that I’m not actually sure what causes this difference of opinion. Today’s album landed in the third category for me. It was a pleasant listen but didn’t exactly hook me in much. It felt raw which is always nice, but it didn’t leave me feeling excited. I’m glad I listened to this, but I doubt I’ll return for more.

It might be a little _too_ minimalist for me, but I'd say it's held up decently well and has its moments. I can certainly hear the influence on later post-punk bands.

good walking music!! i enjoyed this

Hadn’t heard this album in a long time and remember liking some of the songs.

I don’t hate it

Who came first, Gang of Four or A Certain Ratio?

I don't think I like punk very much. I can see that a lot of people liked this album quite a lot and heard things I personally could not tease out of it and I am happy for them.

I can hear Gang Of Four's influence on a lot of later groups I like... But for me that's all they sound like. Influence that later groups did better. Just bored me

Alright I suppose

Quite a raw album. Not on the same punk level as the pistols or clash mind you. Some decent rhythms though. I can see how some british bands of the noughties like franz ferdinand, futureheads etc could be inspired by something like this. Damaged goods is absolute tune. Great song. Couple of other decent ones like naturals not in it and not great man. Overall, one great song and the rest of the album was OK or not great. I can definitely feel the inspiration in bands i grew up with as a late teenager.

This feels before it’s time.

Quite funky and original, but in a way where I don't know if I'd want to listen to it again

You think they’ve ever heard Talking Heads? I don’t like how repetitive and borderline pretentious the lyrics are, but the writing is solid and feels original. The vocals aren’t the most unique. It jumps from disingenuous to cheeky. Production and instrumentation are fantastic, though. I enjoyed parts of some songs, but would not listen to this again. 3/5

Damaged Goods is a killer track. Bass sound on the album is great all the way through. Tough rate though. If its revisitable. I think there are other British punk bands I would like to listen to more.

Has a good funky groove but it’s all very samey

Not terrible. Parts of it were kind of annoying, but some was actually pretty decent. I wouldn't revisit all of it, but some songs are worth listening to again. 3/5

Never heard of them before this, not exactly sure how I feel about this album to be completely honest, but one thing’s for sure, it definitely packs a punch

Learning that I like punk, or, at least postpunk, more than I thought I did.

It started out interesting - good bass lines- but grew tiresome, until the last song.

Sure. One of the better punk/post-punk albums thus far.

Not really my style tbh. I should probably write more about it, but this album just didn't speak to me. Next!

Very raw, very punchy. If it weren’t for the anti-establishment lyrics, I’d given a 2. Closer to a 2.5.

Decent, albeit somewhat underwhelming album. Feels like The Subways got really high, and forced the Ramones at gunpoint to cover their songs. I can *definitely* understand why they were so influential with such a heavy style in the 70s/80s (and I know it's unfair to compare them to the bands who built their music on this influence), but I wasn't quite as blown away as I expected to be based on the bands they've influenced.

Not inspiring. Borderline 2

I can see this as influencing lots of 80s artists. Underground and hipsterish before hipster was even a thing. I love the sound of the electric guitar but this was so screechy and off key it got annoying sometimes. I’m giving it a three just because it must have been unique at the time.

Ok, didn’t massively stand out

OK album but loving production ruins it. Some notable songs Damaged goosd and 5.45

Old school, scaled back, indie rock. I like it, but don't love it

Good songs, good energy on this one.

That’s pretty in your face, sonically. It was interesting

Yep, like it. Bit samey after a bit but some really good songs in there.

Natural’s Not In It // 5.45 // 3.5/5

It's decent but I am very weary of this sound being nearly halfway through this list.

I like their politics but I wasn't impressed with them musically back in the day and that hasn't changed.

A fun middle of the road punk album!

This was a bit of a weird one. Some songs I really didn't enjoy. But then other songs I really liked Hit and miss 3 ⭐️

3.4/5. catchup on 5/28/24. pretty cool and see how it inspired RHCP among others.

Punk rock essentials.

Very interesting. Best tracks are Damaged Goods, 5.45 and It’s Her Factory, although the rest of the album is good too 3/5

Okay, not great. Somewhat monotonous 3 stars

So as I started to listen to this album, it sounded to me something that would’ve come out of the early 2000s. I was very surprised when I looked at the date and saw it said 1979. I guess it stayed contemporary sounding. While it seem very heavy and it’s punk influences, it did offer a variety of other genres to go along with the punk style lyrics and topics. I knew there had to be, a name for it. Enter “post-punk“. Everything has a name, folks. I really like the energy of the first half of the album. The second half sounded a little more discombobulated to me. At one point, I thought that they must have ranked all of the songs and put them in descending order on the album. if you listen to it backwards, it would really left a great impression, otherwise I’m gonna have to say it was just OK.

2.8 - maybe I need to be in the mood

I get this, but I don't love it. Fave Tracks: Natural's Not In It, Love Like Anthrax 3.2/5

More average post-punk stuff on this list. Feel like I've heard this album 10 different times over the last 850 or so albums. Nothing special. At least it isn't too long.

Had some random exposure to this band over the years but this is the first time listening to a full album. Really thought I was going to like it after the first few songs but the second half of the album fell flat and repetitive.

I kinda dig that very skilful interpretation but do not like the sound aesthetics.

Started out good but lost me half way through

Fun post punk listen, killer bass and guitar work

Enjoyed it. Second time listening to this one.
