Reviews (page 5 of 7)
meh, ok really, feeling generous
First song was really cool I thought, the rest of it didn't really live up to it for me. It's fine.
Half langweilig background sound, half nice grungy electro.
Only listened once, mainly instrumental synth album. Nothing really grabbed me except for Aladdin’s Song.
I'll give it a 3 for "it's fine, just fine" as I'm sure that it has value for many, but electronica is just not really my thing. I don't want to trash it simply because I don't know more about it, I just likely won't listen to it again.
"The Contino Sessions" is the second album by (electronic) rock band Death in Vegas. The first two times listening to it, I found it a bit boring. After listening to their debut album (on the users list) I gave it another spin and found it somewhat better, but I prefer the other one. This one has a lot of guest artists that make it lose its coherence, the songs are weaker and the sound is more rock and it all sounds just less energetic.
Electronic.
I really like the song Scorpio Rising by them so was hoping it would be more of the same but was just a bit weird and not as good as I'd hoped
This album is considered to be electronica but with the addition of guitars and bass it’s really much more complex and layered and quite good. Very listenable. I enjoyed almost all of the songs but especially those with vocals: "Dirge", "Soul Auctioneer", "Aisha", and "Broken Little Sister". The choir arrangement on "Aladdin's Story" was very interesting too. The only song I did not care for was “Death Threat”. I was noisy and monotonous.
This felt like it was trying to be very cool. I think at the beginning I was quite into it but found it quite samey after a while. It was definitely OK and snippets I liked a lot, I felt some of them never went where they needed to go. Like it was missing some kind of crescendo
These kind of electronic albums are always kind of difficult to rate. Sometimes they can become background music and you lose concentration when listening, but they are never bad music, always enjoyable, but when they are something like Morning AM they leave more of an impression. Unfortunately the song that left the most impression was Aisha, which is the worst thing on the album. Dirge is the highlight, the rest is very steady. I think a 3 is fair, its not far away from a 2 or a 4. I would listen to it again because its inoffensive, but its lacking either a bit of punch, or a little more trip hop that would take it to the next level I'm saying 3/5
Primal Scream-y
Kinda creepy but kinda calming rock-electronic fusion. A unique sound that was worth experiencing, although there's not many individual tracks that I could say much about.
Shiet it threatened to be a good album, but was a bit too messy to make a lasting impact. Defs some good tracks on here, but too much that sounds dated and a few very weak tracks. Another decent album where I struggle to understand it's place on this list 2.5/5 Fav track: Aisha
overall rating: 6.5/10 favourite song: dirge ( 7.5/10 ) runner up favourite: aisha ( 7/10 ) least favourite: lever street ( 5/10 ) album cover: 10/10 vocals: 6/10 instrumentals: 7.5/10 would i recommend ? : not really , it doesn’t stand out to me that much other: death threat sounds like it has freddy fazbear laughing in it
It’s ok. Not as good as something like Portishead or Massive Attack, maybe that’s not fair… but still fun and listenable. 3/5
Solid
Trippy. Made me write a couple of jokes for a stand-up perfomance that will never happen. The songs with actual lyrics are pretty bad, the rest is cool, I like the noisiness. Liked Lever Street the most
bien chill
3.75
Another one of those that I didn't know what to expect. surprised, and a little impressed.
Not sure if this album knows what it wants to be. On one track you get atmospheric trip-hop, but on the next you get experimental hip-hop with vocals from Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie Speaking of guest artists though, I did really like Iggy Pop’s performance on Aisha Favourite tracks: Dirge, Aisha, Aladdin’s Story
90s UK electronica just for a change. Tarantino movie vibes. Was hoping to give it a 2 just because it's 90s UK electronica, but it's a 3/5.
I recognize and love the first track Dirge. The rest had some good stuff but some noisy/repetitive.
quite depressive
Dark and gloomy and heavy, but for the most part it wasn't too overwhelming. Some of the tracks pushed that boundary, Aisha straight up crossed it. As far as diversions go, there's been worse.
Loved Dirge. I loved the instrumentals, though the vocal performances did ruin some songs. The back half is not as interesting as the front half.
I only managed one listen of this but I enjoyed what I heard so a high 3*
Eh
Very strange album. Greatly preferred the first half with it's loud and crazy buildups and strange vocals and singing. 2nd half was still good but didn't do as much for me. Almost a 4 Score: 70 Art: 50
Some really good songs and some really shit songs
Coming back into this after trips to Bucharest and Warsaw. This was experimental as hell, but at the same time some of the sounds I feel I heard whilst going through security at Warsaw airport.
Honestly I didn't get it - it was just instrumentals. Not good, not bad. 6/10.
3/5
Pretty cool. A little crazy at times.
Good mix.
When I saw that today's album was yet another electronica album, I didn't have much hope for it. When I read that it is kind of like shoegaze meets electronica, I had even less hope for it. What I heard, however, was a rock forward style of electronica, in that a lot of the songs on this record have pretty heavy distorted guitars and bass, with underpinnings of electronica (sampling, screeches/scratches and beeps/boops). Actually, they sound a bit like the Prodigy or Primal Scream (their good album, Screamadelica, not that other shitty album of theirs we were given by this generator). The shoegaze categorization, I believe, is coming not from the musical stylings, but more from the lyrical delivery. It can be noticed in one of the only songs with lyrics, Soul Auctioneer. In this song, the singer's vocals are sang in a style similar to Bob Dylan (nasally, and with a care free attitude). Overall, a surprisingly ok album. Most electronica albums with me fetch a 1 or 2 star rating, however, this album I will rate a 3. I didn't hate it immediately, so that's a plus. And I can hear some musical talent in most of the songs, so that's way more than I can say for any other album of that genre that I've gotten yet. Favorite songs: Soul Auctioneer, Aisha, Dirge Least favorite songs: Death Threat, Lever Street 3/5
One of the most interesting features of The Contino Sessions is the use of guest vocalists throughout the album. Notably, Iggy Pop appears on the track "Aisha" and delivers a powerful and raw vocal performance that complements the driving electronic beats. Similarly, Dot Allison's vocals on "Dirge" add a haunting and ethereal quality to the track. The album's production is also a standout feature, with rich layers of sound and intricate arrangements that keep the listener engaged and intrigued throughout. The use of samples and live instrumentation creates a dynamic and diverse soundscape that is both familiar and experimental. One of the best songs of the album is the track "Hands Around My Throat," which features a relentless drumbeat, distorted guitar riffs, and haunting synth lines. The song builds to a fever pitch before culminating in a powerful climax that is both intense and cathartic. This album is a well-produced soundscape and definitely worth a listen.
The Contino Sessions is the second album by British band Death in Vegas, released in 1999. This electronic / pop/rock album has been certified gold in the UK and was rated highly by critics. I liked this album, although nothing significant stuck out to me from it or the band. A decent electronic album from the late 90's.
Not bad. Some good tracks. An enjoyable listen, but not one I’d revisit.
3/5. Not any bad songs but not something I’d listen to on repeat or go out of my way for again.
This album was pretty fun and pretty cool. But unfortunately that is besides this point at this point when it comes to unknown mediocre non deserving bands from the UK in the 90s. The overrepresentation of this stuff really undermines the integrity of this list. It's just so disappointing.
This one is completely new to me. I don't think I've heard anything by this band before. Dirge is a very good opener. I like the vibe, vocals reminded me Charlie Kelly high on spray paint doing his impression of Bob Dylan though. Notable Songs - Death Threat Flying Lever Street Luther's Funk 4/10 - Good but a little over indulgent. Gratituitous song length.
Not bad, hadn't heard them/him in a while
I had absolutely no expectations with how this would be. Admittedly, my brain turns off whenever I see that something is electronic. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Not bad, not bad at all.
Didn’t do a lot of me.
Interesting and unique. Really enjoyed the sounds. This is one I’ll come back to. A lot of cool tracks. Never heard them before. Wish zi could spend two days listening to it. 3/5
Liked this more than I thought I would
Big beat electronica with a dark, gothic rock feel (like Screamadelica with a dark heart).
glimpes of good near the start, otherwise just a bit weird
The sound is decent but not enough to keep my interest for the full album. They have some adventurous cover versions for sure.
One of my favourite directors is Sophia Coppola, not only does she produce sumptuous visuals but she also has great taste and music so the soundtracks to her films are also fabulous. I’m meaning this because her Lost in Translation (a wonderful film btw) featured Death in Vegas’ Girls and that scene just captured the mood of Americans lost in Tokyo perfectly. Girls is actually from their subsequent album Scorpio Rising, but the Contino Sessions is also a fine album. I’m not a fan of shoegaze but this album could almost convert me.
The popularity of trip hop from acts like Massive Attack and Portishead naturally lead to innovations on the genre. Death In Vegas aims to explore a rock edge to the spacey beats of trip hop, giving it a darker and electrified sound. Sometimes it works well, other times it feels like a hammer when something more subtle could've been used. The opening song Dirge plays into this mix the best, while most other tracks feel like half-effective experiments. I don't want it to seem like I'm punishing this album, because I think the experimentation is cooler than not, I just feel like it doesn't need to be more than this album.
This album was cool at moments, but it drags on for a while. Favorite track: Flying
Strange mix of NiN, Gorillaz, and Bowie. Feels a bit over-wrought. Not terrible though.
Surprisingly not too bad for an electronic album because it did have some vocals, guitar, drums, making it sometimes seem like an actual pop/rock album
Come into this thinking I like two DIV songs, and prefer Dirt which isn't here. Aisha is decent, and ahead of the curve slightly in that Iggy Pop later turned up doing this sort of thing for everyone from New Order to seemingly countless others. Am immediately reminded that I also like Dirge, not sure I knew it was them. I saw the sub-screamadelica criticism which makes sense for Soul Auctioneer especially, Death Threat as a track is completely pointless, should be a 90 second coda, tops. Most of this, though, is decent and an enjoyable listen, however I'm not sure it's essential. Better than David Holmes solo work.
Good stuff!
Intense. Dark. Unsettling. I really like this, but it also makes me feel super uneasy.
Vage psychedilic, soms aardig, soms kut
Not my kind of beat, electro-rock something? Decently produced but still not something I enjoy.
I had only heard Dirt from them before this. This album was definitely a lot more atmospheric and experimental, merging more into the realm of post rock. I was expecting more like Dirt so was a little disappointed.
Dirge is cool. It's also in the movie "The Last House on the Left" which is cool. Rest of songs malright
Bounces around a bit stylistically, which works in it's favor more often than not. I liked the vibe overall, although I wasn't really blown away by any of it.
It's listenable, kinda cool moments. Neptune city is a great track - 3 stars
I think this is the album Damon Albarn has been trying to make for years. I enjoyed this.
I ...I liked this I think. I put it on while working, stopped it several times to make sure I could really listen to it and it was hypnotic. Dirge, Death Threat and Flying the main tracks for me here. Solid 3 out of 5 and Dirge makes it onto my playlist.
Think I had this - only really remember the Dirge (?) though.
Good note sounds. not so good voicey sounds
album is a 3, Aisha is a hard 1
Electrónica.
We've had a few of these albums now. You know the sort: lots of beats/grooves, but not really dance music and not exactly trip-hop. Mostly instrumental but with occasional vocals. Vaguely psychedelic, kind of quirky and eclectic, but also ultimately a bit samey and unremarkable. All of them from the 90s. I can understand having one or two of them on the list but surely they're not all 'must-hears'. Was this one a bit better than the others? I dunno. Maybe? 2.5 / 3, I guess.
Pretty solid album. First two tracks are great. The end gets a little flat but it works.
I had never heard this and I liked it.
kinda far out, but perhaps too far out
This is OK. I hear a lot of elements of other bands (Primal Scream, Radiohead, My Bloody Valentine), but they do not add up to anything new and compelling. The combination of EDM and rock does work, but it remains just OK.
Something of a genre defier, although the blanket electronica seems to be where it falls there is stuff in here that trends more towards the less driving side of industrial, alongside post-pop electronica reminiscent of something like Stereolab. The diversity is an overall strength though it also delivered a couple of songs I couldn’t wait to be over.
Very interesting electronica/rock crossover.
"The Contino Sessions" is the second album from the English electronic music group Death in Vegas led by Richard Fearless. Good last name since, I think, this album is trying create an atmosphere of fear, mostly, or at least darkness. But, not all the time which is where I had problems with what they were trying to do overall. There are some good songs here though and for the most part, it is at least interesting. I guess this fits in the electronic music category but there are some more straight-forward rock moments. Each song is almost it's own thing. I heard all sorts of influences: The Chemical Brothers, Primal Scream, Air, Suicide, 80's and 90's Ministry and sort of Britpop. Big time guest appearances by Iggy Pop and Jim Reid of Jesus and the Mary Chain. Some of these songs have a dance beat, almost an anti-drum beat, droning keyboards, droning guitar and basic rock. The album starts out with "Dirge" which is definitely in the electronic category with its spacey and dreamy guitar and keyboards, a slow drum beat, and weird background noises. The second single and for me, the best song is "Aisha" with Iggy Pop talking of murder and blood. It has a dance beat, a cool guitar and it grooves. They could have built a whole album based on this. The last song and first single is "Neptune." It is mostly electronic and has a happy vibe with its keyboard melody and uplifting ending. I found this album interesting. Not saying I'm going out and buying it right now. It does sound of its time in the late 90's. Fans of experimental electronic music may find this quite good.
6/10. Good album, maybe even a 7/10. Not my favorite genre, but it keeps it fairly interesting.
This boring album went gold in Britain AND almost won a Mercury Prize. Truly glad I heard it before I died. 5/10
Although the songs are repetitive, it’s pretty apparent this was the backbone that the mid 2000’s Dubstep scene was built off, inspiring some of the top artists like Diplo, Noisia, Excision, etc. I see a lot of people bashing this album with the justification that the songs are boring, but these are songs meant to be played LOUD. If you can’t hear the bass you are missing out. 3/5 Favorite tracks: Dirge Death Threat One More time
This is a very moody 90s sound. I like it.
The Contino Sessions started off so well with tracks like Dirge and Aisha, but it got stale by the last couple of tracks.
This was more my speed when it came to electronica, although in the end it proves too monotonous for me to really call it great as such.
Tuntematon mulle, mut mitä esim noita vierailevii muusikoita kattelee niin aika meritoitunutta porukkaa on! Must ihan mukiin menevää tällasta konevoittosta junnailuu. Ei huono. 3/5
I like this album. Great fusion of multiple styles, perfectly mixed. Songs like Aisha are really disturbing.
This was quite listenable for electronica. It makes sense that a couple of tracks have been used for background music in movies, games, and such. "Dirge" has a great, mysterious mood to it. "Aisha" is driving and dark. "Death Threat" caused me some stress as I was driving in traffic and I thought my lane departure alarm kept going off. It's still long and repetitive, but that's to be expected.
3.5/5
Pretty decent for instrumental.
I feel like I could this sound, but better elsewhere. It wasn't the worst but I don't see me returning to it at any point.
This is quite cool, but not as memorable as it should be to get anything more than a 3/5. Aisha probably my favourite track. Probably not what they'd want, but it serves as excellent background music for working - not so distracting that it captures your whole attention, but enough going on that it keeps your mind moving. I guess that's why their music is used a lot in soundtracks?
Weird but cool album. Doubt I'll listen to it again though.
From the era where dance-due producer bands ruled supreme (Underworld, Chemicals, Leftfield etc) slightly less exalted Death In Vegas stake a very credible claim to be at the top table. There's some quality vocals (not singing) from Bobby Gillespie, Dot Allison and Iggy Pop and an overall vibe of the Velvet Underground meets big beat. A slight reliance on the riff over melody stops this being a 4, but a solid solid 3.
Áhugavert rokk. Mun hlusta aftur.
Decent background ambient electronica. 3/5.
Gotta respect those electronic synth the matrix soundtrack sounds.
3.5
From the album cover I thought this was going to be death metal. Color me surprised.
Ambitious album for the time ( sound engeneering and mixing) to combine ambience and 70's rock. Quite relaxing. (6/10) FT: Dirge
Dirge is a great song. Enjoyed this album - some chill and some noise.
Interesting
Interesting album. I like the the mix of guitars with the more electronic, noisy vibe. Cool, unexpected roster of guest vocalists. Fave Songs: Soul Auctioneer, Dirge, Broken Little Sister, Aisha, Flying
Yeah, this was a cool album. I'd never heard of Death in Vegas and had no idea what I was in for, but the mix of blues, electronic, soul and metal was a nice change of pace. I'll definitely go through some of their other stuff.
I don't know what to make of this. It's not terrible but it's definitely not good either. Each song seems wildly different from the one before it too. Not sure how to categorize it. One of the most aggressively 'meh' albums I've ever heard.
Insulso.
A hectic start that soothes into niceness. A good alternative break from many vocal-heavy albums
I had never listened to the entirety of this album before. It was an okay listen but will not likely listen to again.
Great collection of some out-there remnants from the death throes of the 90s. While I wish the LP carried more of the chaotic energy of 'Dirge' and felt a bit more cohesive, I still find myself drawn by how well this encapsulates such a revolutionary and scattershot decade of music in a collection of tracks that evoke without feeling dated.
Nije loše, nije loše. Zaista ima dobrih stvari poput: Dirge i Aisha.
trica bog te jebo
Moments of 2⭐ moments of 4⭐ so somehow this doesn't seem like the right rating, sue me.
Cool and interesting sounds, I will listen to this again. Well done boys
Some interesting ideas here, but execution wasn't 100% my style.
Wow really interesting, didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Very hard to describe but sorta like ambient electro hard rock psychedelia. Lots going on with the many, many layers of productions so will definitely listen again with headphones.
Listened to this driving, and it was great for that setting. Cool instrumental tunes for a lot of the album, but any track with lyrics isn’t as enjoyable. Sounds extremely late 90s, almost to a fault
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Dirge
The first song dirge is really cool so far I’m getting shoegaze/dream pop vibes and I like how instruments get added over time. It’s repetitive but in a good way if that makes sense? I’m not a huge electronic and repetitive music fan (aka I don’t like daft punk) but this is actually pretty sweet. We got some synth lead now about five minutes in. It’s becoming crowded sounding but it adds to it so that’s cool. Ok now next song is soul auctioneer. Starting off with a noisy one liner synth that isn’t very melodic but it’s interesting. Yayyy some singing now. This guys voice is different I like it. He almost sounds like an American Damon Albarn. This is like shoegaze gorillaz. Ooh I like this it’s pretty sick. It’s still going alright. Ok I skipped the last thirty seconds lol it was long. Next one is death threat. Robot. Some drums and bass now. Someone going ooh ooh ooh? Idk sounds like barking almost lol. Chilling down a little. Laser beams now alright. I skipped the last minute. Now it’s flying. To be honest I think I would like this album a lot more if I was in the mood for it like chilling at night but right now I’m not really so my review might be kinda swayed. I love shoegaze at night but during the day I don’t have the attention span for it hehe. That being said I skipped this one too a little. Now it’s Aisha and we have aime electric guitar now that’s cool. This guy talking huh. “I’m a murderer” HUH? Ummm ok I think this album is a concept album now. It’s interesting at least. Anyways. Next is lever street. I love how this one starts ooh. Oh yeah this one’s good. I love me some organ. Upright bass possibly?? Yes please. This ones my favorite so far. I actually do like this album but like I said before I need to relisten at night. Yeah that song was cool. Next is Aladdin’s story. Ok I like these basslines tho. Some sax possibly? Sweet. I like this one too. Next and I think last is broken little sister. Noisy ooh. Ok its picking up now. Nice some singing. Getting some sonic youth vibes. Thurston Moore kinda sounding guy. I like this one. Nice alright I’m done. That was pretty cool not something I would’ve listened to on my own but I’m glad I did I’ll relisten to it at night but besides that its cool.
Good, would listen again
The first song is really good after that the album feels a bit like marmite some good and bad songs, a strong start that is let down by the rest of the album 3/5
Eh. Overall okay. No particularly bad songs, but wasn't overly impressed with any songs either
Ok. I prefer the instrumental songs to the ones with singing
Some songs are neat.
Like a fine score to a Zach Snyder movie
Strange choice, like a movie soundtrack
Getting Strong Kasabian vibes from this which isn't a bad thing at all. Also reminds me of a more indie prodigy. Didn't hate it. Liked a fair bit of it. Got bored with quite a lot of it (the dancier bits). A surprising 3/5
"You've broken your wings, you've lost your demon" (Soul auctioneer) Parece que esta es la SEMANA DE LOS GOTICAZOS.
At first blush I was nervous to have to listen to two hours and 22 songs of this album. I then saw it was listed as electronic and my eyes lit up. I love electronic music and this album sort of fits that bill. A little older than I am used to, but there are some good hits in here like the opening song Dirge and a few others as it goes on. I don’t know which because I’ve been having it on in the background and I’ve flown through ten songs already. Some of them I had to skip but there is a lot of gold in these mines. I’m still a little surprised at the album length but if you were driving in a car for two hours this could be a good soundtrack to pass the time if it was the only CD in your car. The cover of the album is pretty basic and has been done before but the music feels fresh and experimental.
I'm sure I've heard a song or two by them. I was expecting a NIN clone. This is its own thing for sure. I love the trip-hop drums and industrial noises.
Sounds like radiohead
Interesting. Worth a full listen a couple times
Kind of weird psychedelic rock
Pretty good album for having in the background while coding. Monotonous electronic rhythms and beats means it's not too distracting, but also means that there's nothing remarkable about it either. Would listen again, but probably wouldn't reach for it.
I liked it, but I didn't love it. It wasn't as heavy-hitting as I expected at times, but quite an alright listen.
Incredibly hard to put this music in a box. Its interesting, but dull, and annoying, but sometimes fun? Best Song: Dirge Rating: 3.5 Stars: 2
Gloomy and repetitive, but not particularly bad. Even if not of my liking, it was interesting. 4/10
Meh, not the worst thing on this list but whoever put this on the list has interesting taste in music
Some tracks rolled on in a great way. Others rolled on forever. 3/10
Lite av interesse her.
This isn’t dark enough to match some of the better goth/industrial work of the 90s and isn’t light enough to fit in with the bigger trip hop and electronic genre of the time either. I guess in that way it’s unique. I liked Dirge and Flying but the rest of it felt forced. Aisha is bad, and the other songs are all like a cartoon goth kid getting caught smiling. It’s not super bad but I don’t think they can decide what they want to be.
2.25 - Pretty Inoffensive electronica. Fine.
2.5
I think this kind of sound is just not my favorite in general. It did make me feel like I was in a grungey 90s show though which was fun for the first couple songs.
4/10
If you enjoy the first three Matrix or first three Mission Impossible films, you’re gonna LOVE this. If you enjoy one chord progression for 5-7 minutes with an occasional vocal, you’re gonna LOVE this. I didn’t.
There is about six minutes of material on this album. Every track follows the same pattern, every track has one central idea or brief riff or melody which is stretched out to song length and beyond withou doing anything to expand upon it. I knew one of these songs from back in the day. Lever Street was almost good.
Feels like music without a face or soul
Not loving it and didn’t finish the album.
Pretentious and annoying
Didn’t really grab me - not sure I’d revisit
Another bland album from an era that had so many unique, and fantastic albums. The author of this book should feel ashamed for his terrible taste in music.
I like singing along. This was meh.
Most of the tracks blended together at some point. It sounds like a Radiohead rough draft; like how people write demos for more popular acts.
interesting but something missing - need to check couple more times 5/10 Will I add this album to my library? maybe
Whenever I see “electronic band” in the description, I’m always prepared for the worst. Started out really strong, the opening track ‘Dirge’ was great; it was a fantastic example of combining the best elements of rock and electronica to make a good song. Then came the rest of the album, a bunch of electronic noise rock that would flash in small parts, then go back to being terrible computer noise. One song legit sounded like they used a dial-up modem as an instrument. A low 2/5
# Album Name: The Contino Sessions # Artist: Death In Vegas # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Not my thing. One good song in Dirge. Aisha isnt bad. But overall not a great listen. Pretty mundane. Trying to be edgy yet boring. # Top Tunes: Dirge # Would I listen to it again? No
2 out of 5. Thankfully on the shorter side, and these songs just seemed to run together into a jumbled mess.
Just did not stick. I did not hate myself while listening to it, but it sort of washed over me and was gone, and I looked at my phone a few times hoping it would be over and yet also did not notice when it had ended.
Vibey but not a lot that I'm into here. Aisha is kinda hilarious even though it probably isn't supposed to be.
Eh, like a lot of these electronic albums, not really for me. Better than some others but not by much.
Didn’t do it for me. Electronic walks a fine line for me and this was in the wrong side of it.
I am a bit confused. I liked it, but it was a bit odd at times. But I liked it. It was pretty interesting. I can't really say more.
Didn't move me
(3/7) thought it was going to be worse but not too painful, better when they're not singing
Random British band I’ve never heard of again. Seems a regular occurrence on this list. Maybe once a week. Background soundtrack music is the vibe I get early one, especially on the instrumental songs. It’s a heavy drum beat vibe. I enjoyed Soul Auctioneer on the early part of the album. Don’t like the more electronic sounding stuff but overall it’s really a lot of guitar rock with drum beats. It just doesn’t really wow or do anything special for me. Sometimes there’s a beat and a riff that I enjoy and think this is fun but it doesn’t feel special. It loses your interest quick. And for a 47 minute album, it feels way longer. It drags by the last few songs. I’ll go 2. It has its moments, but it’s largely forgettable. Would be cruel to go 1, because it’s interesting enough at times.
2:5
There are moments of this I like in an ambient environment setting, but I don't know when I would ever listen to this.
A vaguely familiar name. Music is alright, a bit monotonic and repetitive although, I feel some krautish influences which is always a plus for me, but so far after listening to the whole album nothing stood out too much, so maybe 2 or 3 stars at first glance.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
Had high hopes from the first track but then lots of meh.
Meh

Not that bad
Totalno nepoznano. Prvi komad je bil čist fletn. Nobenga besedila, samo 'lalalala', ampak the vibes were good. Naslednji komad... K shitty Gorrillaz. Ugh.
Hmm...45 minutes later and nothing on this album is at all memorable or evoked any kind of response. No reason at all to come back to this again. 2/5
Didn't care for this one at all. Just not my vibe. I found it pretty boring and I was ready pretty quickly to move on, and yet the album kept going. 1.75/5
This might be a harsh rating, as it wasn't bad-bad, but it really didn't catch me at any time.
I think I put my finger on why some of these electronic albums are tedious. They are not really interesting enough. To me it's like 3 or so chords--it's not like this is classical music--it's too repetitive. REM would write like this with all instrumentals and then hand them to Stipe to pen lyrics. It would be a fun experiment to give him this album to write lyrics to.
I listened to this last night and already forgot what it sounds like. In a week I’ll forget its existence entirely
The boring sessions
2/5. The opening track is really good, but a lot of these tracks are just not very interesting. I had this playing for a while, checked the playlist and realized there was still another, interminable hour, and turned it off. If this was pared down to like... The five best songs, I think there would be a solid 4/5, but I'm not listening to 23 songs for a handful of gems. The original 47 minute album would be one thing, but the second half with all the added songs and remixes... I don't think so.
I can dig experimental electronica. But not unstructured random button twirling like this. Learn your shit. Don’t be shit.
Unnecessary addition to this list. It sounds fine
I found this hard to listen to and was so tempted to not finish the whole album. It just wasn’t my vibe and I couldn’t find anything much that I enjoyed about it. There were a few bits of instrumentals that were good but it never felt enough.
1.5
2.5
Saai, veel van hetzelfde, langdradig
Not my favourite DiV album
why is this here..? the first song is good i guess!
Immediately forgettable. Each song drags on and on with the same repetition until it fades out. A total snoozefest.
are we sure aliens didn't make this album? it's pretty intriguing and unique so i want to give more but this album doesn't deserve it. most of the songs sound like they could be in a futuristic themed ps3 racing game fav song: Dirge
This ambient-style album had the unfortunate luck to follow a Brian Eno album. Never stood a chance.
Not quite my tempo
3/10… industrial / electro rock / *1999
Mostly another forgettable 90s British electronic album on here. But it's saved by Aisha, a great track with haunting Iggy Pop guest vocals. Thank you Iggy for rescuing this album from a 1.
Not my type of music and don't think it ever will be.
Nothing too exciting. 2/5
2.5
Nothing special
Never heard of this album. Favorites: Dirge, Aladdin's Story Thoughts: Everytime I started to get into the album and sound it yanked me back out with something I didn't like. Overall this is not my thing.
Scho no...
I’m really not a fan of this. In fact I found it so jarring at times that I had to resist the urge to switch it off. It wasn’t interesting enough to overcome the negatives, in fact I found it pretty boring. This one should have stayed firmly in the 90s
Not a fan of electronic music but I had higher hopes for this album as I really liked the opening track (love the way it builds). But alas, it was all downhill from there. Nothing else appealed to me at all. Favorite: Dirge Would I listen to it again: No
This was one of the game changers in genre good album and exceptional couple of songs but doesn’t seem like a game changers album
Beetje te experimenteel voor mij
Very strange, at one point he talks about murder? I listened to the whole thing and some of the beats were good, but it was a very strange experience.
This felt more like a movie soundtrack than a studio album. An ambient leaning electronica-ish slog
Dirge would have been an appropriate name for the album - that's what it sounded like. Sort of edgy and off-putting and the music was building for almost all songs it just didn't take off. All intro and no main part. Odd - didn't hate it but won't be back on rotation unless I need some vaguely creepy background music.
Some nice moments on most tracks but this is largely unmemorable
Some good songs. The opener in particular was very good. Most of the rest of it was just not my style
The first track really gets you going, but the rest of the album does not live up to the hype. 5/10
so electronic and buzzy sounding
The first three tracks here all follow the same pattern: take a downtempo beat, put a noisy guitar riff over it, and repeat. Sometimes there are lyrics about insects laying eggs in your brain. "Dirge" does have a big build up, but the sound palette is the same throughout so it doesn't feel like all that much is changing. The next two tracks are more fleshed out; "Flying" has some banjo and "Aisha" rises and falls with some keys and more interesting guitar. After those tracks though there are a couple more songs that just sound like interludes. The closer has an interesting climax in the second half, with sitars and horns. It's probably the best moment on the album. There are interesting sounds on this, and I like the mix of electronic and psychedelic rock well enough, but there are very few moments where it's truly exciting.
Aldri hørt om dette bandet før. Elektronisk musikk, typ psykedelisk/trip hop. Top 3: Soul Auctioneer, Dirge, Aisha
Wanted to like it more because it had Vegas in the title
Guys I was driving home on a dark road and saw a really bad car crash and this album was playing and I stated to get really scared
Boring. Not bad, but no reason for these songs to be as long as they are.
Not sure what happened there. Get out the old digital music garage player and boom albums!
despite standouts like the opening "Dirge" (essentially one long crescendo) and the Iggy Pop-led "Aisha" (apparently a top 10 hit in the UK), the blend of psychedelic rock, trip hop and big beat presented by Death in Vegas here largely runs together into an incoherent blob. at least it's a nice-sounding blob, with a combination of acoustic, electric and electronic instrumentation that's very 1999. strong 4/10.
i definitely wouldn’t listen again, but it was okay. electronic music really isn’t for me!
Very 90s electronic rock. Slow drums, etc.
perhaps electronica is a genre I don’t care for, also death not my fav topic
Groupe inconnu.
Jagged and crunchy and dark. Too repetitive to be truly compelling; I need more dynamics and change-ups in music like this to enjoy it. I wanted to like this more because there were some genuinely interesting moments of instrumentation, but the songs buckled under their runtimes.
Didn't dig it; felt like it was trying to be "edgy".
Garage band background beats. 4/10
has some good moments here and there (dirge, luther’s funk) but overall I was disappointed. I LOVE trip-hop and electronic music in general but this is just…boring
Didnt catch any interest at all. Boring.
I didn’t like this as much as I thought I was. I like shoegaze/electronica, but this didn’t really resonate with me. Maybe because it was on the darker side. There were some catchy parts, but I’ll likely not listen again.
Wow another boring brit band. Come one list maker this is ridiculous. It's not offensive to listen to but it's another trailer or soundtrack sounding album. Nothing really good. It's like Imagine Dragons, they are not terrible but they aren't good.
Uneven. Really enjoyed the blissful tunes. Edgy tracks not so much.
Compelling, some good grooves. But Aisha is too much to shake.
This feels like if the movie 𝘚𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘩 was an album. It’s definitely weird, and not necessarily bad, but I have to draw the line between a 2 and a 3 somewhere. Best Track: Neptune City
It’s not my thing.
At least there was quite a variety of electronic songs that I didn’t like, rather than the monotonous repetition other albums had.
Sounds like robots. Robots programmed by less than interested musicians.
Nothin exceptional. Had its moments where it was great and just as many where it wasn’t. Not sure it really deserves to be here but it’s not the worst album on this list.
Better than Coldplay
Dull and forgettable.
More repetitive than '80s video game music.
I realized I forgot to type up my review after listening and had forgotten everything about the album in 12 hours.
Wtf why is this shit on the this list?
Overall: 3/10 I listened to this twice and couldn't remember a single note afterwards. Not exactly terrible by any means but not at all engaging which made me a bit upset. Maybe I'm being too harsh but I don't have a lot of patience for albums like this being in the list. Fav Song: Aladdin's Story
Not my style
Bits of this are good but overall it’s rather boring.
Favorite tracks: Aladdin's Story, Soul Auctioneer Most of these songs struck me as dull, but these two tracks I really liked and definitely redeemed the album for me.
I don't really care much for this album. In fact, my lack of interest in this album is so prevalent that I'm not going to say much in this review. You know, relative to my other reviews, that is. The production is alright, I guess. Some decent elements. Certainly one of this album's more respectable parts. I don't particularly enjoy the vocals. "Soul Auctioneer" kind of annoyed me for this reason, in addition to that song's production being a bit weaker than the others. It's neat that they got Iggy Pop for "Aisha" but I don't care for his spoken-word performance on the song. Some of the songs are too long. The writing doesn't make much sense. It seems I'm not huge on British electronic indie bands, barring a few exceptions of course. This is not one of them. Not horrible, but I don't see a reason for this being a must-listen. High 2/5.
There's not much for me to say about this one - it felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be - the changes in sound/tone are somewhat jarring. That's really all it was - it seemed like a jumbled mess and was completely forgettable to me. I don't know what they were going for and I doubt they achieved it. I have no idea why this is on the list.
Interesting enough. I didn’t know what to expect and some of the songs were actually kind of fun to listen to. That said not really what I’m interested in.
A pretty good electronic album! I actually considered going up to 3 stars after Aladdin's Story (my favorite track). It didn't get all the way to 3 stars, as the last couple of songs were pretty annoying.
Did not enjoy listening to this... noise.
Aisha, I'm confused as to why this is on this list. This isn't nearly as bad as some of the other Brit Techno Wank that you insist upon me hearing. A bit too long at times. Aladdin's Story has a good groove. Aisha has an interesting subject matter even though it sounds like an abandoned Rob Zombie song. 2
Pretty interesting instrumentals, but nothing I'd really listen to again
Another of the brit electronic groups? duos? DJs? that stayed just barely on my radar in the late 90s. They seemed to be selling a kind of studied, manufactured cool, all surface, no depth. Which doesn’t seem far off the mark, but they are one of the few acts from that wasteland period in UK music after britpop crashed out and the next thing hadn’t entirely happened yet in the Isles (did it ever?) that tried bringing the psychedelia of, say, Spiritualized into some kind of marriage with drum machines, samples, downtempo, etc. Not electronica does brit rock, but something similar. Alas, this period also mistook not having a regular singer as a desirable idea, with the occasional fill-ins from a lot of surprisingly heavy hitters, but Doves figured this one out.
a wall of noise that doesnt really sound good. You know when you lean on a keyboard and let the notes ring out? its like they made an album around that.
So boring
Bought this in 1999 on the strength of Dirge and Aisha being moody and cool. I think I probably listened to the whole thing once or twice. I’ve given it another go this week but still, it just never really takes off for me. The whole thing is vibes and atmosphere so it wins on that front, but falls down on a lack of tunes.
Never did really like electronica. This could be a cool soundtrack to a movie or something but I’d never just listen to it for enjoyment.
This might be the worst album I’ve ever heard.
I hate to say this, but it felt like it was noise, not music.
Kinda boring
There is white bartender somewhere out there who thinks this is the greatest/coolest album ever made. But that’s the problem it’s sort of performatively moody and dark and cool, it just feels a bit lame.
drab and uneventful. why is this on here, exactly? it's the musical embodiment of "go girl give us nothing" favorites: dirge, aisha
I was not digging this album until the song Aisha, it saved this from being pretty weak.
Mid beeps and boops from the turn of the millennium, but the Iggy Pop fronted "Aisha" is perhaps the most interesting, and most ridiculous. Going from "I think you ought to know, I'm a murderer" to "the rules are all wrong, every perversion is justified" to "Aisha, I'm confused, Aisha, I'm vibrating"... The gods all suck... Must have been wicked weed
Føltes veldig utdatert no. Men hugsar hitsa.
Forgettable. 2.
You know when you're using an electronic pencil sharpener and you think to yourself, I'm ready for this sound to be over. That's the feeling I got for much (but not all) of this album. 2/5
2.5, definitely. Rounding down for Aisha trying too hard.
Music not my taste now
Très inégal Mais luther's funk <3
Bet this sucks
Pretty boring, unessential stuff
So many great albums didn't make this list, and this is just so mediocre. Also the vocals are pretty annoying.
Strong "You wouldn't download a car" energy. The first song sounds like a bad 90s movie credits song. "Flying" sounds like background music in the merch store of a parody Epcot. This album isn't bad per se, it's just bland and doesn't speak to me.
Day 14 Weirdly I felt most of these songs started well with a good initial riff and then just kind of went nowhere, don’t think this is one I’ll be revisiting. 3/10 Highlights Aisha Luther’s Funk
