Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Probably good work music
I like when something offbeats comes into the mix. This isn’t my style, too much repetition but as background it was fine. I had a wide range of emotion on the first track starting with “okay, kind of alternative rock-esc” to “ ugh, I hope this isn’t the vocals the entire album” to “damn that’s a groove” to finally “Alright switch it up already”
weird af
Has its moments but boring overall.
Goth pop
The first song is real strong. Everything else is just not my cup o’ tea.
It's like the soundtrack to a late 90's TV show about a team of futuristic hacker spies but they're also all teenagers.
ye fine moody some cool songs but wouldn't say an album to listen to before dying
Not bad, another new one on me.
This was okay for a while but I got bored with it. It's fine but it might not hold your attention.
Aisha and Dirge
The album was cool. I don’t really have much to say about it. Soul Auctioneer sounds like if Bob Dylan made electronic music in the late 90s, which doesn’t sound good, but it’s actually ok. Right down the middle. 3 out of 5.
Didn't really catch my attention
I really like the purely beats songs of this album but not always a fan of the songs with vocals on it
I don’t normally listen to electronic type music, but I really enjoyed it!
The 90s was a time where everything had to be edgy.
point0.
cool, spacy indie rock. I enjoyed
??
It took until the very last track for me to find one to engage with. Neptune City (Andrew Weatherall mix) was quite hypnotizing. I didn't care much for the rest, but its saving grace was enough to push the album from a 2 to a 3.
Nice 90s electronica
Music for people who don't like chord changes. I had a friend whose band made music like this (though tbh not as good). It's a nice kind of music to have in the background as a groove. One of the songs was super annoying though and when it ended the relief I felt was immense.
this was a pleasant surprise! the worst parts were when any singing was happening and those were pretty easily the worst tracks as well. but the instrumental tracks outnumbered them so it wasn’t bad overall! and those instrumental track were very cool, kinda dingy cinematic techno. felt like they could be right at home in a reznor & ross score. would be a 4 if it was all instrumental but the singing locks us in to a 3
I bought this when it came out but it never really grabbed me. I still feel the same now, it's well played but I don't feel it really commits to anything and nothing really stands out.
Digging the vibe... dark and cyberpunk.
I understand the statements of it dragging along which is true. With that being said, it was decent. The lyrics when sung were a bit out there. It was alright not amazing but not bad
This just drones on & on. Vocals are weak. Better tracks don’t feature vocals but then they draaaaaaag. Just boring
Even as someone who kind of likes this, there is no way anyone has to listen to this before they die.
Old school dub steppy
Nice album
These tracks feature a lot in TV and film soundtracks and it’s easy to see why. They’re atmospheric and lure you in. Not mind blowing but good in the background.
top songs: dirge, aladdin's story, neptune city, soul auctioneer, has some cool stuff
I remember loving Dead Elvis, but I’m not sure I would anymore. I enjoyed this, but I don’t think I need to revisit DiV for any reason for a while.
Psychedelic. Interesting background or club music. Nice enough, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen again.
It's a cool trip-hop/electronic album with slick production, and endemic of the 2000's rap/rock production style. Sadly, not super memorable, but not bad by any stretch.
Cool vibes but ultimately not for me.
Nice discovery!
A progressive blend of saturated rock instrumentation thats given time to stretch itself out and develop as slowly as it likes. If you told me this was the score to some trendy 90’s movie I’d totally believe you! The first song started out like an early Gorillaz song and developed into a Spiritualized song very naturally. The second song “Soul Actioneer” continues to show that this may have been an influence for some early Gorillaz work, with its fuzzy synth melody and galumphing, downtempo beat. Beyond this point you understand what you’re in for. The only big switch up are the few songs with lyrics. Everything else is great to zone out to OR zone into. Not unlike the function of a house music dj set, you should just be along for the ride and slow development of this project; let the pacing help you appreciate the atmospheric sounds and occasional surprises - I’m looking at you, “Aisha”. No individual favorite song, just let this one simmer. Strong 3/5
some of it sounded like the music that would be playing in a nightclub in a video game, which i thought was pretty cool, but then some of it was kind of annoying...
3.5/5
This is #day279 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… I only knew "Dirge," and was approaching this record with that in mind. Actually, I wasn't approaching it at all... this is more of an attempt to leave a comment. I've had a bad day. Dark thoughts. And I've been feeling like shit right up to the moment I started writing this. My demons from the past keep chasing me, and I can't handle them. I guess I just don't want to... The music is okay... dark, trip-hoppy electronics with a good dose of psychedelia, best listened to before night falls. But probably not before you die. Unless it's the same. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day280.
used to listen to them a lot late 90s early 2000s some was great, the rest a bit of 'itallsoundsthesame' creative and experimental so a 3
Mining similar territory but less interesting that the Primal Scream albums released right before and after this album. They are trying to do something and they are successful about half the time at doing uh something.
First listen
Pretty downer of a record, but not bad. The opener, Dirge, is the best on the album. I don’t know wtf Aisha was, but it was creepy and weird.
This album is so of its late 90’s time. At first I thought it was a side project from members of Primal Scream. Ultimately these tracks are good but they feel unfinished. They sound like basic demos with a solid backbone.
This was pretty eerie, but I enjoyed the layers of sounds. Aisha was the standout song for me, despite its dark creepiness. Solid 3 zone.
Doesn’t really stand out
Pretty solid ambient listening with an edge that doesn't come off as mall ninja.
I might listen to this again.
Not my cup of tea, but not bad either 6/10
Rating: 6/10 Very interesting album, combination of electronic, rock, and noise. The band does a good job building up the songs but they often over-stay their welcome.
This one often got a bit too psychedelic for me but I did like the atmosphere quite a but on some of the tracks Standouts Death Threat Aisha 3/5
Low key techno
Alt with a techno rock vibe
A bit of an oddball, but there's some good stuff here. Flying, Lever Street and Aladdin's Story were the best ones. My least favourites were Death Threat and Aisha.
I really like the atmospheric and hazy sounds here, especially in Dirge and Aisha. Some other tracks don't add much or kind of drag though.
Soul auctioneer sounds like a Gorillaz song, the others are just fine background music. Nothing contentious about this one, 3.
I liked this. Just kinda jammin out for 47 minutes. Some very cool sounds. I’m trying to catch up so not gonna be more in depth. But this was a vibe. More lyrics would have been nice for me. 3.5 rounding down to 3.
This was an interesting album. There were a few really moving parts, and other times where I felt more like I was embedded in a performance art soundscape. Not sure where I fall on this.
Relisten?
Kind of felt like I was in the Matrix. Feels like the band got really excited about synths and other computer generated music and that seems to be a large part of what they were hoping to deliver. After reading about it, it seems like it was really well received and was pretty popular. I can't say I really wanted to continue listening to it, but it did something for me. I guess that's art.
Странная смесь любимых вещей, которая совсем не всегда работает. Лучшая песня - Soul Auctioneer.
For electronica, I didn't mind it. I think what made it kind of cool was the real instruments mixed in. Dirge had some simple guitar chords nicely accentuated by drum tracks and synth. Soul Auctioneer was a cool trip hop song that blended guitar, bass, and synth. Death Threat started a bit rough but had a solid industrial sound once the fuzzy guitar and bass kicked in. Aisha was awesome - wicked guitar licks and thumping bass lines. It reminded me a lot of The Fall, probably also because of the talking as opposed to singing. Aladdin's Story had some decent musical accompaniment - different (older) sound than the rest. Not quite a 4 for me, but an easy 3.
Like it a lot. The darker vibe means its not an album I'll put on often at this moment, but will come back from time to time. 3.5
I like this, more things I've never heard before that I'll start to listen to.
One song sounded like Kasabian ripped them off, another like public service broadcasting were heavily influenced by them. Then I read Wikipedia and they got sued for the Kasabian one cos they ripped someone else off. The Iggy pop track was fairly forgettable. I dunno. They appear to be influential but it didn't influence me much.
3.2 Interesting, but definitely fails to entice in parts. At first it felt a bit QOTSA-ish, but too many songs detract from what could make it a really good album.
This has a pretty cool vibe. Definitely enjoyed some tracks quite a bit, while some others were just ho-hum.
Interesting electronic tunes, all of it easy enough to listen too (maybe there was one that I couldn't dig, but didn't listen closely enough to remember). Enjoyable overall.
Really solid electronica album, made my workday a bit better
Fine probably a 3.5
Really great grooves here. They tend to evolve nicy, rarely gets ultra-repetitive
Gritty, but interesting. Listening to Death Threat at my 2pm crash was great because the song sounds exactly like how I feel at 2pm, crashing. The distortion can get grating if you listen to music loudly like I do, but it feels like the right thing to do with this album. I can't say I loved this, though. The songwriting (where lyrics occur) doesn't penetrate the noise, and so while aesthetically pleasing, I can't remember a single line from the record. I'd chuck it on next time I build furniture, I guess?
I had to give this a couple of listens, and I'm still undecided. The concept of this album is cool, and I hate pegging down the very few early electronic albums on the 1001 Britpop and Paedophilic Albums to Listen to Before You Kill Yourself list, but this thing is so lukewarm and plain I don't know what else to give it. Extremely dull, but not a bad listen. Also, this shit does not even remotely sound like it belongs coming out in 1999. Early 90's at best. MEH
A lot of this shit feels like something you would hear in one of the early-mid 2000's Hitman games. I was pretty captivated with this in spite of how boring a lot of it was. I think I'm just a sucker the grittiness on display here, especially with the psychadelic edge it has in a few places
FRONT LOADED AS ALL FUCK Those first three songs blew my dacks right and I had to run down to Uniqlo only to realise they don't have fatasses my size in Japan. I then spent the rest of the day without pants, (trust me the fit was fire previously). Too bad the outfit is now half baked. And the album felt the same way too. Some really good stuff on here, but it just ain't got the wherewithal. 7/10
Didn't mind this. Fell asleep but it didn't annoy me!
This was pretty decent background music - I like the Iggy Pop track.
meh
Electro-shoegaze. No thanks.Better than expected, but not good enough to be on this list (like at least 500 others)
Totally forgot about this band. Only remembered ever hearing their song Dirt.
Death in vegas - the secret band that you all should love - great
Maybe a second listen required, interesting. Dylan-style vocal delivery. Kraftwerk if they took a wrong turn off the autobahn onto skid row, a sinister dark tinge. Interesting between a three and a four.
Interesting but ultimately forgettable
Not really my thing!
Great songs that I over way back when but the rest if the album didn’t inspire
J’ai bien aimé les premières pièces, j’ai trouvé qu’elles ajoutaient une saveur de rock alternatif à leur genre, mais l’ensemble m’est ensuite apparu répétitif
This was nice, reminded me of some other turn-of-the-century rock I loved. 3.5
Had it's moments
Pop synth interlude
I liked the slow build of the instrumentals, but the album as a whole didn't do a lot for me.
Interesting mix of rock influenced electronica. The first song (Dirge) was great and I love the way it slowly built up. I also liked the backing track on Aisha (but the vocals on the back half ruined it) and the hook on Aladdin's Story. Overall the songs felt a little too long and meandering though.
liked it!
I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Would definitely like to listen to this again.
More like a collection of song sketches or ideas than fully realized songs.
Some seriously cool sounds on here. As an album, though, it's overall too long and too meandering in places.
Electronic music that would fit really well on the soundtrack to any ‘90s Cool™️ movie, but only to fill out the length of a CD and/or to use during a low-action, low-dialogue transitional scene in the film. Even at its best, nothing here feels particularly special, and occasionally, some songs can even get a bit grating, but it’s mostly fine albeit far from anything stand-out.
3 - ok album. The instrumental songs were much stronger than any with lyrics
Interesting electronic music album.
Interesting, but repetitive.
Very light 3 stars. There are enough cool moments to justify it. But this is definitely no essential record. 3/5
Typical 3 star album
Honestly quite nice. Great background music
I really liked the first track, but quickly lost interest. There are cool parts here and there, and I think I could appreciate it in the right circumstances, but I don’t want to listen to downbeat electronica infused with rock influences, like a more exciting Portishead or a rougher Gorillaz right now. Broken Little Sister wants to be Sonic Youth, and that’s not the worst thing to want to be
all the same but ok music. didnt listen close lol
Sounds like some 90's alt rock. It was fine. 3.0
Who would have thought that there was more to this album than Come On Eileen and Jocky Wilson says - if you know, you know #TOTP Seriously though, quite enjoyed it.
Albumi #152, 19.02.2025 Death in Vegasin kakkosalbumi julkaistiin vuonna 1999. Varsin mainiota mäiskettä. Erityismaininta kappaleelle Aisha, jossa vokaaliosuuden hoitaa vanha kunnon Iggy Pop.
I genuinely don't know how to describe what I just heard. It was really weird, but for some reason, I kinda liked it. Didn't LOVE it, but it was really good at times. "Dirge" was definetly a high point for me, and a great way to start off the album. This album feels like a guilty pleasure. I don't know why I like it, I just do. Liked Songs: Dirge, Neptune City Least Favorite: Aisha
Sad and gloomy which I generally don’t care for, but also surprisingly interesting.
I liked this a lot more than I expected. Call it a precursor to Lofi Girl. The album is brought down by every song with vocals, which turn the music into a generic Oasis clone.
Cool
Found the first few tracks a little samey.
I remember this from yore
There’s better electronics out there, but this was decent.
first listen feels very cinematic, but not a lot of consistency throughout
Kind of went in one ear and out of the other, apart from the Iggy Pop jumpscare partway through.
откуда-то знаю некоторые мелодии, очень странно т. к. очень концептуально
I liked a couple of songs but not enough for a 4
Ultimately I'm only left with a vague impression - it mostly drifted into background music. I have to agree more with the Pitchfork review (which gave it a 3.9), not a lot memorable. But I didn't hate it, so I'll give my standard 3 star rating.
Sounds a bit like goth electronica. It was fine for background music while I worked.
I liked this. All over the place and all good stuff. 3.75
I'm having a hard time with this one. On the one hand, I really dug the vibes. The instrumentation was cool. A lot of if reminded me of the Gorillaz - who I am a fan of. On the other hand - while I'm not opposed to instrumental music - most of these tracks seems to be screaming for vocals. The music was great but didn't really "go anywhere" over the course of 5-7 minutes, so (at times) it ended up sounding like the karaoke versions of some really great songs. Just - something was missing.
I think I’ve heard the name Death In Vegas before, but I’m not super confident about that. Taking a quick peak at this album, I see that it’s a British electronica album, so I estimate that at worst, I’ll probably think that this is something nice to have on in the background. What a pivot this is from AC/DC’s Highway to Hell yesterday. Anywho, time for some Death In Vegas! As I guessed, I thought this album was fine. Nothing really jumped out at me all that much, and I’d say that this is something pleasant to have on in the background. The rhythmic elements of it were pretty good though, and I enjoyed feeling the groove of these songs. It was cool to hear some other 1001 albums adjacent artists provide the vocal work on this album; Bobby Gillespie and Jim Reid were really good, but I loved Iggy Pop’s weird contributions on “Aisha.” I thought the songs that had deeper sounds were the best parts of this album (“Dirge,” “Death Threat,” and the aforementioned “Aisha” fit this bill), but the songs with some shoegaze elements were pretty good too (“Flying” and “Neptune City”). This album was fine, but with a dearth of British electronica music already on this list, I’m not quite sure why this made the cut, but to each their own I guess.
It’s OK
I found this mostly really bland.
3.5
Good in place, a bit odd in others (Aisha track mainly!) I can see why so many tracks have been used for promos/advertising/games/films - catchy and electronics led. Nicely done. 3.5*
Interesting to listen to but I don’t think I’ll ever think about this again.
Some songs are ok, some not so special
One of the better electronica albums featured I just couldn’t totally connect
...
J’ai pas de grand souvenir de l’album, j’écoutais un peu d’une oreille distraite, mais ya une toune qui était vraiment le feu 🔥
This album is not as bad as some of the other reviewers see it. There are times when the songs are kinda dreary, but there are lighter tracks as well. Basically, Death In Vegas belong to Electronica, but their songs are edgier than songs by other bands in this genre.
Är det här ett triphop band, ett psykadeliskt rockband eller bara ett schizofrent projekt skapat för att förvirra omvärlden? Det är ju inte dåligt, men det är också lite meh.
Interesting music, but kind of a mixed bag.
Mielenkiintoista elektronista pärinää. Jotkut kappaleet sellaisia rokki looppeja. Tunnelmallista. Tulee Fatboy Slim mieleen. Parhaat: Death Treat, Lever Street
This one is ok. A very chilled-out take on trip-hop and downtempo. It does get a bit repetitive sometimes, which is not unusual in electronic music, but at least, at only 47 minutes, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Key tracks: Dirge
dirge
This is the type of blend in “real” and “synthetic” I enjoy the most. And while this album has a pretty stunning sound, I think the overall tracks leave a bit to be desired.
Equal parts mesmerizing and meandering, beautiful and boring, world-building and world-weary.
Sometimes it’s sick, especially imagining listening in a crowded dark basement. Sometimes it’s dull
This one had some interesting tracks. Was pretty hit or miss for me, admittedly 90s electronic isn’t exactly my cup of tea.
Not bad.
This is what we call that writing music.
3. Barely
“Aisha” is a banger. This was good to work to.
It's alright the instrumental stuff is better. Something to have on in the background on a late night road trip through a weird place. Round up because why not today
Threw this on while driving and wasn't disappointed. The 90s electro trip-hop sounds laced with druggy effect layering on Dirge make for a fine soundtrack ripping down 32. Something about this particular style reminds me of movies like Blade -- a simpler time. Soul Auctioneer is a bit more electro-forward and plays sort of like a Damon Albarn song. Aisha is a pumped up electrostatic tromp built around a tight (uninteresting) 4/4 drum beat overtop of which distorted guitars and keys noodle about with a somewhat awkward (IMO) vocal sample slapped on in the back half along with organ. It is fine, but something about it feels off. Aladdin's Story is one of my favorites here so far -- a downtempo jazz-influenced psych exploration that reminds me a bit of more recent BADBADNOTGOOD. Broken Little Sister plays like a lightweight NiN + Blur mashup. Neptune City is a wandering excursion into some Eastern tones via Most of the album is about creating atmospheres over actual songs. Sure there are rhythms and certain ideas that are expanded upon, but for the most part songs start, build and then kind of taper off without too much internal dynamicism or anything to really remember them by. I'd say that looking back my favorites were Dirge, Soul Auctioneer, and Aladdin's Story. But otherwise this is largely forgettable for me. Soft 3 / 5.
First couple songs were angsty/grungey and I was not looking forward to the rest of the album. That changed after Flying - Aladdins Story which was a great stretch. Didn't care for Broken Little Sister, but I liked the songs to close it out. Half of the songs belong in the high 4 range, but the songs I didnt like are squarely in the 2 range. Feels fair to make this an interestingly high 3 star album.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Some interesting musical textures.
November 4, 2024 "What am I? I'm a murderer" 💀 Where were you for Spooky Month, Death in Vegas? Only having heard the track quoted above, "Aisha", before today, I assumed I wouldn't like this album. (It has a cool energy but I find it overly repetitive and wears out its shock value quickly.) And yet there's something to these Contino Sessions... "Soul Auctioneer" has a dark yet danceable energy; "Flying" is a great slice of neo-psychedelia; "Broken Little Sister" has both the noise and the lead singer of a Jesus and Mary Chain song. It's a 'results may vary' album to me, but at its best it's a great soundtrack to a nighttime city walk. HL: "Dirge", "Flying", "Neptune City", "Aladdin's Story" 3.5
Interesting album, no strong feelings about it.
Aisha is a belter The rest sounds like a soundtrack for a very arty advert Not terrible but not essential
Switches between compelling and boring.
I liked this more than I thought I would.
I found myself nodding along to a lot of this. Unfortunately, some of these songs just really don’t need to be 5-7 minutes long.
A lot of electronic noise with a few decent moments. Nothing I would ever seek out but it would be ok for a minute at a club or on a movie soundtrack. More interesting than a lot of electronic music I have heard so I will give them that. Still generally leaves me cold though.
I didn’t get the most enjoyment out of this, but it’s way more original than most of the other 90’s albums I’d never heard of before this list, so that’s nice.
I thought this was pretty interesting, didn’t really know what to expect! Favs: soul auctioneer, aisha, Aladdin’s story and one more time
Interesting group and interesting music. I enjoyed the instrumental tracks. Although some of them were quite repetitive sounding. This was not a group I knew of and I will likely listen to some more of them.
Not bad
Wow this was actually pretty good. I dont listen usually to this music but this was good altough long as hell. Good flow easy listening although a bit more strong than the usual
rock album with moments of electronic music, but just enough of both to keep things interesting. good album. highlights: “soul auctioneer” “aisha” “broken little sister”
Never heard of them - didn't mind this time but probably no need to go back, Iggy Pop notwithstanding
The standout part of this album is the drums. I like how they sound. I like the beats. The rest I've forgotten about, except that one track with the Bob Dylan-like vocals.
Notable tracks: Dirge, Aisha
Not a phan. Too much not going on. Gets really boring really fast. There are parts to get in to, but overall, I feel no better off after listening. No worse either, though. 3/5
I’m one to defend music that is described as ‘dirgy’, long, drawn out songs can make up some of the very best albums. And this album starts off in a way that supports my claim - tracks 1-3 especially consist of some great instrumentation, with elements of trip hop and a general psychedelic feel. After this however, I find myself zoning out from it. This isn’t necessarily bad, but in this context I feel it just might be. From Aisha to the admittedly great ending of Neptune City, there really is nothing much to say about the music at all. An interesting listen, for sure, but nothing that other albums don’t do better.
I almost like Dirge, Death Threat
A little bit of an industrial wrinkle in this electronica album. Some chill vibes as well, nothing really grabbed me but it was decent. I do think they could have benefited by leaning more into the psych element they worked in, I did enjoy Flying quite a bit when they leaned into it a bit. 3 stars
Alright sound
The first couple of songs were really good and then it went downhill
I listened to this whilst cleaning up the house, and it really helped pass the time. I don’t think I would just sit and listen to it on its own though. Some of the tracks gave me Kasabian vibes.
I like them, and can't think of anything negative to say about this album, but that's about it.
this felt like radiohead/muse outtakes ... ok maybe a bit harsh but it's very just OK. I did enjoy the synth and rock instruments combo but as an album it doesn't go together smoothly
I wasn’t as much into this. Songs were too long. I prefer the other record they did with like Paul Welles and Liam Gallagher
Pretty good
crazy vibes. good stuff.
I kept waiting to see where these sessions would go. Still waiting...
OK.
Electronic shoegaze. I had no idea what that's is or what that's supposed to sound like. I can't give this album an enthusiastically resounding endorsement but i did think it was solidly ok.
Didn’t finish it
I both like this and find it utterly uninteresting. I’m really about down the middle on this one.
Pretty slow and laid back shoegazie psychedelic stuff. It was pretty good we liked it.
Very interesting album. Sounds a whole lot like Mezzanine by Massive Attack, but with some vaguely post-rocky vibes. Opening track "Dirge" is like 30x better than any other song on here. Almost feels like it belongs on an entirely different album. Didn't even recognize that was Iggy Pop on "Aisha", but that track was also good.
Electronic, industrial. The opening track really sets an incorrect tone for this record. You'd kind of expect the rest of the record to hold up to that strong of a track, but even with the guest vocalists (including a semi-creepy, semi-phoned-in Iggy Pop), this record coasts off vibes more than anything else. Favorite track: "Dirge"
This grew on me a lot more than I'd like to admit. It feels more like a mixing/DJ album vs something that feels larger but I enjoyed listening. I think this is a case of an album catching me on the right day vs being overly great and I'm not sure if I'll look it up again.
They remind me of Massive Attack, only not as good. The lyrics of Aisha are incredibly cringey and impossible to take seriously.
The songs range from painfully boring to entertainingly edgy. Hearing Iggy Pop declare he’s a murderer after making those weird mouth noises was the highlight of my day.
Background music
More instrumental focused grunge. Another that gives me 'could be in The Matrix' soundtrack vibes. 3.5
Pretty chill. 3/5
It was a weird one. But some songs were decent 3 ⭐️
I love electronic rock so I do really dig this. I'm not sure it really has the relevance or influence to justify being on this list though in spite of that.
Mixed emotions for this album. Some parts I really enjoy, but sometimes especially the guitar is almost on the edge to annoying. And I miss some (decent) vocals on most of the tracks. Not an easy 3-stars vote for me but with a few more tries I might get more used to it?! Favorite: "Aisha", "Lever Street" 2,5
Lots of people have praised the use of really diverse guest vocalists on this, and I get that - but it also slightly makes the album feel a bit disjointed. Having said that, it's at the intersection of rock and electronica that really appeals to me, and when it gets it right, it's very good indeed. Overall, I couldn't quite get into it enough to push it into the fours, but it's a good three and I'm glad we had it.
Adding to learn on drums and bass
This album was interesting. very experimental in the early tracks but mostly engaging. Something I am glad to have listened to, but would probably not listen to again.
As a hater of the electronica, I have to say this was the best album I have heard from the genre. There were times they were about lose me, but they seemed to pull it all together and bring my interest back in. And then I got to Aisha. Wow, what a song. I was instantly hooked and downloaded. And to find out this is Iggy Pop and his lyrics, my mind is blown. Just awesome. The combination of lyrics and music is pure genius. The last line of The God's all suck is perfect. I had to find out who Aisha is/was and it turns out she was the 3rd wife of the Prophet Muhammad and she was only 9 years old. I don't care what century you were born, that's messed up. Organized religion is a scam anyway. Pray on the old, weak and the unintelligent. Guess that's why Trump is hawking Bibles these days. The average MAGA person has the intelligence level of the piece of gum I pulled off my shoe this morning. MAGA folks take great pride in displaying their stupidity. Back to the album, this wasn't bad background music. Loved Aisha, but One More Time stood out as well. You got Jim Reid of the JAMC singing Broken Little Sister. Even have the the staple JAMC heavy guitar reverberation(sp?) I can't say I will revisit, but I wouldn't turn off if some of the tunes pop in my rotation. Aisha = 5. Entire album = 3 3
3 Dirge is an absolutely incredible opening to this album, one that I thought absolutely nailed the vibe that comes to mind when you think “Death in Vegas” - crime, drugs, overindulgence, and dry heat. In some ways, it even kind of reminded me of an instrumental, more electronic Queens of the Stone Age song. Really great, atmospheric track to kick things off. As for the rest of this album? Entirely forgettable - I couldn’t point you to another highlight if I tried. I mean, I guess the Iggy Pop feature with Aisha stands out, but… it’s far from one of the stooge’s finest moments, I’ll say that. (The guy from Jesus and Mary Chain is much better on Broken Little Sister). Overall, the music is fine, and it’s certainly more diverse than that MJ Cole album we had, but it’s just barely more interesting. Really, Dirge is probably carrying my 3-star rating here. On a slightly more interesting note, coincidentally, in addition to Iggy and Jim’s features here, Aladdin’s Story is a song originally written by the Rolling Stones, and the vocalist on Soul Auctioneer is the guy from Primal Scream - two artists that happen to make up our next three albums.
Electronic.
To me it's like trip goth, I was initially quite enjoying it but then it started to dip and become a bit of a slog then it kicks in with Aisha which I don't think I hated and certainly woke me up, but overall feelings are meh it's fine 2.5 rounded up to 3
Not my jam, but interesting to hear
Fullt godkänd.
Mostly just sounds like music
Genre blending alternative rock with some electronic elements, some organ ++. Quite weird stuff. Cool sounding vocals - reminds me of Gorillas.
Alright.
What's this? A quirky, turn-of-the-century, British, Mercury Prize nominated, interesting, but unfocused album? On this list? Why, I never!
Electronic.
More electronic/house music which has a time and place, for sure. It is upbeat and nondescript at the same time.
Again, fine but nothing more.
Fine.
It was okay. Some good moments, and some bad moments.
It was pleasant; songs were well constructed and had a good mix of beat-oriented with some more "rock" elements. I can't say much stood out but I enjoyed it.
Fine. Boring at times but it does something cool every once in a while. 3 is generous but iggy pop jump scare bumps it up
There some really good music. Ambient/neo psych stuff especially in the first half, Dirge is excellent. However there's also some songs that just don't work. So this falls somewhere in the middle.
Grooved through the whole record and liked most of it. A couple tracks didn’t work for me but on the whole it was good listening.
This was ok. The first half or so was good to have on for background. Wasn't as much of a fan of the end of it.
I knew nothing of this album before listening. And I started off thinking that it could be really good. I dug the first few songs, maybe even the first half. But it got very tedious in the second half and I just didn't enjoy it that much after that. I might listen to this one again, but not soon.
Pretty good. Never heard them back in the late 90s. Enjoyed it.
Lever Street walked so Motion Picture Soundtrack by Radiohead could run
Beetje zoals portishead, maar wat krauterig
Enjoyed it! It has a good vibe throughout the album. 3,5/5
Wow, actually I'm a big fan of this. It's a remarkable tour de force, with almost every track sounding completely different. It definitely has a strong 90s vibe, and many tracks feel straight out of the Tank Girl soundtrack. But still, I really like it!
Another one to file in the Intriguing folder. Some genuinely cool instrumental tracks, would make a good soundtrack to my life in the late 1990s.
Great beats! It's got a nice groove you can dance to
Música electrónica. Ni fu ni fa.
Electronic.
Some of the songs start simple, then build up as more instruments are added. Quite a morbid album, but pretty cool.
Wel nice gitaar sounds. Beetje langzaam soms. Mis wat vocals. Life wel vetter dan tijdens werksesh perhaps
This thing is abrasive, and melancholic all the way through. It has good atmosphere going for it. The track list is a bit of a mixed bag though, it loses me a bit in the second half. Some tracks are great while some are meh. It’s ok, I had some fun listening to it.
Very happy with this. Doubt I would have listened to it if it was not on here but I am glad I have. This is an genre I have not really explored but think I would love some of these and maybe I am bias because it's one of the first I am hearing. It is a name I only recognise from their work with Hope Sandoval but that would be on their next album. I am surprised they are on this list, although it was cool hearing Iggy Pop on Aisha, and they have worked with loads of top artist from JAMC and Liam Gallagher. Clearly have some strong connections. Although I enjoyed it there is only so many stars I can give it. Maybe if the next album comes on with Hope Sandoval vocals it will get more :) 3/5. *Edit* Just going through their wikipedia these guys have worked with so many huge artists, can't believe I had never gave them a listen. **Edit** Just finished the second album, and I love it that one is definitely 4 stars. Doubt it will be on this list though. Stand Out Songs: Dirge Aisha Alladin's Story
Kinda fun, kinda psychedelic. Some cool noise. Nothing super mind blowing or memorable, maybe 2.5
Good album. Few lyrics thriught. The last 8 tracks were just remixes of two songs and I didn't really care for that.
Música electrónica. Ni fu ni fa.
They've got a good sound but you can't help feeling that the reliance on instrumentals is a bit creatively lazy and one dimensional.
When listening to these albums through Alexa it ‘helps’ by playing related artists when the album finishes. The first time it chose ‘Smack my bitch up’ by the Prodigy. Which is what I expected of the album pre-listen. Second time it chose something from Air’s Moon Safari. That mad a bit more sense after a couple of listens. I was expecting more of a classic Big Beat sound, but it was probably closer to something like Lemon Jelly. Soundtracky, very Psychy in places. A solid album.
Feels like Massive attack mixed with a bit of the prodigy/the matrix soundtrack. A good blend of that 90's trip hop/big beat and dark/grimy electronics but blended with more shoegaze/beautiful style instrumentals.
Hopes weren't high going into this one, let me tell you. This list has given me a ton of mediocre British albums, and some truly abysmal electronic music, so I nearly moaned when I saw today's album was a British electronic record. I did not expect, however, that this album would be infused with so much rock DNA. Like, it actually got heavy and rocking at points. With guest vocal appearances from the likes of Iggy Pop, Jim Reid and Bobby Gillespie breaking up the instrumentals, it made the listening far more bearable. Still, there were too many long instrumental passages that just didn't do it for me, and as I've likely lamented previously, electronic music just goes on far longer than needed. But I'd venture to say it's the best British electronic project I've listened to yet.
Hadn't listened to this before so I didn't know what to expect. The album opens up strong with Dirge, which i liked a lot. From there the record gets more electronic, dark and moody, which is fine, because it was interesting and the songs stood on there own, but I was starting to lose interest towards the end. This album hits the 600 mark of my 1001 album quest and the average rating is 3.42 (so far). This album is good, but for me not essential so it'll score slightly below the average.
Meh
Dirge, Soul Auctioneer, Aisha, and Aladdin’s Story are great. The rest is eh.
Kind of interesting, but not terribly
Ok. Not one I'd add to my collection.
I was into it at first and it just got worse from there. I don't hate it but it's giving "This is Outrageous" vibes.
Energetic. Keeps you awake. Not sure I’d want to listen to it all the time
I felt it was meh
Meh
Alot like trip hop, a few good songs but a few not so good too. (The one that features Iggy Pop)
# Playlist track - Soul Auctioneer # Notes - First time listening to this. - An album with great moments, like Dirge, Aisha and Aladdin's Story. - Broken Little Sister and Lever Street cost one star ou of the rating. Each.
Sounds like it was made for fashion show runway walking, and I think that's what makes it cool. Very grunge/goth sounding, I especially enjoyed the 2nd track. I almost put this at 4 stars because I was going to add One More Time to my instrumental playlist, but ultimately was disappointed when there were some vocals that disrupted my vibe. So 3 it is.
Death in Vegas - The Contino Sessions The 90s and 00s saw quite a few electronica and trip hop artists hit the mainstream: Fatboy Slim, Propellerheads, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Tricky, Unkle to name a few. As with a lot of the albums on this list, I had never listened to Death in Vegas. But if I'd heard this when it came out, I would have listened to it alongside those artists I mentioned above. While this is a good representation of an electronica/trip hop album, I'm not sure why it is an album I need to listen to before I die. It's, fine. It's, good. But I can think of way more albums I think should be on this list. So if you like electronica & trip hop music, you'll probably like this album. If you don't like this genre/style, you'll probably want to pass. For me there are some good songs but as a whole, I would probably not revisit this album again. If I get a hankering for some electronic/trip hop music, I'll seek out Fatboy Slim or Tricky. 3/5
Cool, vibey, mostly instrumental rock with a mix of guitars, synth and electronics. There’s a lot of build up in these songs and not always a lot of payoff. Sometimes, especially on the early tracks, I get the impression that the songs know that they’re cool. As the album goes on, the songs are more genuinely laidback and chill. There’s a 60s psychedelic flair on a bunch of tracks. Beautiful production throughout. Whoa, this jazzy electronic stuttering sound around 3:40 of “Aisha” is awesome!
This was an enjoyable listen. I feel like there was a back-and-forth of good song, OK song, good song, OK song for a bit though. I think I zoned out while listening to most of this album but it was a positive experience as the music definitely lends itself to be listened to like that. Cool album cover too.
Estuvo bien. Dirge me gusta harto.
Decent collection of late '90s electronic jams
A wooshy flavor of electronica. I'd like it more if it is not as aimless and inconsistent as it is.
Way more actual instrumentals than I was expecting from a seemingly electronic album. Overall pretty good background music!
I typically do not like electronica, but I thought this was pretty good, mostly because of its rock influences.
All new to me, the band and their music. Very cool stuff going on here. Interesting mix of more traditional rock/pop instruments with electronic music machines and instruments. Nice pulse to their music and they go to interesting places harmonically and melodically.
Interesting but occasionally grating low-fi electronic.
it was like ok but got boring
weird and repetitive but fun.
Even though this is not my thing, I started coming around to it in the second half! The first track kind of turned me off— felt very formulaic. But every track after that felt more fresh, experimental. Nice blend of live instruments and drums with the usual fare. I think this album is a cut above the other 90’s electronics albums we’ve had, and even though it’s not my thing, I can respect that there’s more artistry in this one. I REALLY loved the addition of the vocals… sometimes very campy! I think that did a ton to awaken my interest level. Definitely brownie points for originality, combining a more typical electronic sound with plenty of live studio fun. 3/5 for a good time.
This was a weird album. Some of the sounds i can get behind, but some of the songs are so long with little change in progression. You need something to change in a song, otherwise the staleness sets in. However, the songs with singing in them, which there was only a couple of, provided the best content on the album. The singing wasn't fantastic by any means, but it added so much charatcer to the sounds they were producing. More songs should have been voice included.
I feel like I should like this but I really don’t. It just misses on so many levels. I feel like the can’t decide what band they want to be. Aisha is a bright spot - killer track with Iggy Pop on vocals. A rare album where the second half is better than the first.
I wanted to like this more.
pretty nice actually for how weird it is
90s electronic music is not typically my thing, but this was an interesting and unique take on it that I enjoyed. The guest vocals from Iggy Pop on the track Aisha were really cool too. This album has some great rhythms and a good mood.
Groovy indie with a raw nerve. Tunes with guest vocalist contribution in general stand out as the better ones though. Those without get boring after a while
I was like, I recognise both this album name and band but 1999? Q magazine? Then AISHA, I'M VIIIBRATING! that made a compilation tape back in the day. Unremarkable otherwise.
I dig the wall of sound of Dirge, also about 4min in it reminds me of early Muse. Then the vocals in the second track came in and I didn't enjoy it anymore. Very repetitive soundscape. Very distorted and experimental sounding. I'm generally enjoying everything except the vocals. It'd be a good soundtrack for a game or movie. 3*.
Something different from the list. It doesn't mean it's bad. It's simply odd, but I liked the fair bit of it.
Perfect as background music.
First track Dirge is great, driving bassline. Flying as well, another instrumental. Second half falls off compared to the start.
Good
This album was... strange but interesting and dark. This would be a great listen to while high.
Pretty good album.from what I heard. It was mainly in the background. I’ll have to listen again but what I heard I liked.
Gorillaz does it better
Decent album with some good songs
Very very generous 3⭐️ based mostly on how good Aisha is. Takes the term ‘filler’ to another level for a lot of it though
Dustin Music. Not as good as Metroid Prime soundtrack though
Meh
J'ai aimé, certain chansons sont vraiment sortit du lot pendant ma course et le pace / vibe était vraiment bon pour moi aujourd'hui. C'était une bonne écoute très pacé si ca fait du sens. 3.25
Draws widely on 80s/90s British indie & post-punk influences, channelled through an electronica production and song-writing approach. Dark and heavy mostly, with distorted guitar riffs and synth leads on most songs over industrial drum/bass loops. A bit like Big Black of Nine Inch Nails, but with a bit more of a Happy Mondays dance sensibility. Iggy Pop doing a Sean Connery impression on Aisha is a treat, the slow build on the opener Dirge is draws you in, and the spacey garage track Broken Little Sister is a fuzzed out bit of psych. It's pretty derivative, but of good stuff.
I liked this just enough
It was an interesting album. There were not any lyrics. It was electronic music and there was sampling or renditions of other songs. It was not bad, I didn't skip any songs, but not sure I would seek it out again.
Quite liked this album! Never heard of this band before, nice background music / easy listening and I like that not every song has lyrics. Like jazzy elevator music but better. Stand out tracks - 'Dirge' & 'Aladdin's story'
Pretty good. Never heard of this guy before. Not much to really make my ears perk up. A bit DJ Shadow-ish but none of the big beats (tm). Standout Track: Lever Street
Cool industrial trip hop vibes.
Kind of weird, but not bad. A step away from video game music.
I like some electric music, specially when I'm at work. But the misc with guitar distortion doesn't really work for me
