Maso
Why do these albums have to make it sound like you're having a hearing test? Half the songs have long beeps and horns or short, high-pitched beeps. It is just garbage noise on an otherwise good album, but because of this noise that is so annoying to hear, instead of the 3 stars I want to give it, I am only doing 2 stars. I get it, you're trying to be edgy but, in reality it is just garbage noise that some people just don't want to hear.
Another album that just kind of droned on and didn't really seem to go anywhere. I wasn't completely turned off by it, but it definitely didn't capture my attention very much. Wish I had more to say, but I think this was pretty forgettable for me.
Cool lyd men u-essentielt
Если пару неплохих композиций, но очень уж они затянутые, отчего надоедают своим однообразием
Another slightly depressing Electronic / Neo-Psychedelia / Shoegaze album. The opening track, "Dirge", wasn't too bad, but perhaps thiis might be because it had no depressing vocals (unlike some of the other tracks). The track "Flying" reminded me of The Cure and early Pink Floyd. I also quite liked "Aisha" because it was almost, but not quite, happy.
Ikke helt min greie.
Favorite Track: Aladdin’s Story
Too edgy...
This is fine. The singing isn't great. They're definitely at their best without any vocals. It's interesting, but not particularly noteworthy or good. I really have very little to say about this album at all. It doesn't deserve to be on this list, in any capacity, though. Favorite Song(s): Dirge
the positives: Dirge is massive. builds and keeps intrigue as it adds increasingly dense layers of feedback and texture to the underlying trip hop beat. otherwise this is just a pile of mishmashed trip hop n neo-psych tropes with little flavor or depth. thin songwriting on here deserves to be one of the 1001? no. trip hop is weirdly overrepresented. probably the only electronic subgenre where that's the case. make sense though, since it's not ravey or energetic or cerebral or experimental... it's just vibe music. it can be great for sure, but don't look for that here

Well, I don’t hate this record, but it’s not for me. I don’t love the singers voice (at least the singer on the second track…it seems like they change), and the music might be really interesting if I was tripping balls, but that doesn’t really ever happen anymore, so I can’t see me finding out. As it stands, I’m just not super interested. 2.4/5
Dirge // Lever Street //
Not my style.
Wasn't horrible but becomes background music fast and stays there.
Just doesn't go anywhere. Maybe it didn't help I was already stressed out when listening to this album
Just ok. Liked some of the moody beats on “dirge” but the rest just kind of blended and dint do much for me. Was excited by the prospect of Iggy on “Aisha” but it mostly fell flat.
A bit of a nothingburger. Not much direction, couldn't tell if this record was going for an electronic/big beat sound, or just shoegaze/psychedelia. Not necessarily unlistenable, but mostly forgettable.
Dirge Aisha
auch wieder nichtssagend to me
This album made no impression on me at all. I think there’s singing on some tracks.
I’d never heard of this artist or album, but after reading some I was excited to listen. Unfortunately I didn’t enjoy many of the songs. I liked the music, especially the rhythms, but then many devolved into noise which I didn’t care for. Most of the vocals were uninteresting to me as well.
Pleasant enough vibey background music. Not dissimilar to Primal Scream. But also not as good. 2/5
Opening track is decent - it’s the one everyone knows — just couldn’t get on with the rest of it though
erg onrustig
Never heard of this. Not sure why it's important. Seems a bit out of place for 1999, but not in a groundbreaking sort of way. Pretty uninteresting without any additional context.
This style of music is just not my jam. It all sounds the same.
Totally mid and boring. The beats and buildups are boring, the occasional vocals are painful and boring, this whole thing is boring, England is boring.
It’s someone’s jam. Just not mine.
This started off all right. There are a few groovy spacey songs that I rather enjoyed. But there were plenty of songs that just took up time. Others sounded too much like Spacemen 3, but not as good. And that one tune with the dude singing like Dylan was weird. I really don't see why this is on here. I feel like the list defeated me today.
2.5 redondeado hacia abajo.
Not bad but there's a lot better out there
Decent background noise that I would have heard while shopping at Express in the 90's
Beginning of the album seemed to build without a climax/resolution. End seemed to drag. Overall, it wasn't offensive, but wasn't inspiring to me either.
Interesting
This, mostly, sounds to me like incidental soundtrack music. Pleasant enough, but it’s not very interesting.
Fine.
It's never good when an album OPENS with a dirge. That kinda seems like something you put to close out a side or a whole album. Second song sounds like a lot of rambling. No clue what it means. Death Threat was decent, but it felt like it had the same beat of the previous song. Kinda wish they would vary up the tempo to these songs. Running together you start to lose interest. So... it was okay, but the songs felt very same-y. I just didn't get a sense of variation. NEXT. Top tracks: "Death Threat," "Flying"
Yup, didn't need to hear this one before I die. Most songs are just a repeating motif that builds but never changes. Sure, some of those motifs are cool (e.g., Death Threat, Aisha (w/ Iggy Pop), Neptune City), but some are annoying (e.g., Dirge - out of tune guitar, Soul Auctioneer - annoying warbling tone, Broken Little Sister - really freakin' noisy and way too long). Next.
Boring.
At first I was into it and didn't get scathing reviews...then it just kept going. Look, I enjoyed it, but back to back felt like a bit of a slog. Could totally see this mixed in with some Goat, Kasabian, and maybe Flaming Lips
I hate it when an album looks exactly like something I'd enjoy and turns out to be not that. This album is exactly that in the sense of having all the makings of an album I'd deeply enjoy and just executes none of it's ideas in the way I would hope it would. You have the marrying of rock ideas with trip hop beats and you'd think "oh that's cool, trip hop and rock really go well together if done right" (See: Mezzanine by Massive Attack). But here we are left with an album that when it want's to go weird and more focused on the usually darker atmosphere of the genre it does it well, like Dirge and Aisha are great songs, but then when it veers off into songs that are brighter and more similar to other British rock of the era (britpop or indie pop) It just does it in the most unexciting way possible for me and it sucks because otherwise I could see the kinda variety they are aiming for working, but it just doesn't, which is a shame.
-weird kinda electronic music -it wasn't horrible but wouldn't relisten
Another fucking BOREFEST
#551. This album was a bit hit or miss for me. Some of the songs were pretty good, if a bit background musicky, but others were kind of annoying. 2/5: forgettable
Featured in ps2 racing games? A contemporary of the chemical brothers? I’m sure this will be quality electronic music and NOT extremely boring.
Forgettable
Another head scratcher. I just don’t get it.
räcker aisha, dirge och kanske aladdins story till ett högre betyg. njae, jag tror faktiskt inte. men aisha är faktiskt förjävla bra
Didn't really enjoy.
Reminded me of that Trainspotting album. This album was just boring. Nothing, absolutely nothing, persuaded me to keep listening to this album except for the fact that I wanted to power through it. I didn’t hate any of the songs so it’s not worthy of a 1, but it was a very boring album.
Boring electronica I immediately delegated to background noise. HATED Aisha, kinda dug Aladdin's Story though.
Not for me
this was excellent until it suddenly turned into a 60s rock album replete with 60s rock album organ out of nowhere
Gloomy without much substance. It's decent background music, but you feel like something's missing.
There are a couple of interesting sounds and textures here like on Aisha. But the other songs could have used some more fleshing out. The rest of the album drags as a result. Probably won't revisit.
Death in Vegas is right, I find electronica to be repetitive and boring and this was no exception
I enjoyed it and loathed it in turns. Great background music or the most annoying sound on earth depending on the track
interesting. harder electronic mix. would listen again.
This sucked. Full of screetching and trying to be edgy. Sometimes the music would start to get good but then vocals would come in and ruin it. Stand-out: Aladdin's Story
Listened to this while playing On Mars. I lost. I remember the name Death in Vegas, but none of these songs were familiar. Not a bad album, but absolutely not essential listening. There wasn't much that left an impression. Some of it almost reminded me of early Gorillaz, but without the charm.
Syns ikke det var så veldig bra, men jeg liker at det er så utrolig sent nitti/tidlig titusentalls sound! Alt er litt røft og matrix
Electronic/beats, nothing grabbed me too much
There sure is a lot of electronic British stuff on this list. A little too much, in fact. Not horrible as background music, little good for anything else.
Started so good. The first track was an incredible opening and got me excited and set my expectations high. But it gets dull and repetitive. What a disappointment
This album was interesting, it started out actually pretty cool, but as it kept going I started not really paying attention to it, but then it ended again kinda cool, overall mid tier again nothing blowing me out of the water but I didn't want to trim it off!
I'm confused as to why this was on the list in the first place. This entire record screams Nine Inch Nails rip off, right? The production is fine, if a bit stale - the song structure doesn't do much interesting, the performances are decent, but that's it. The entire runtime of The Contino Sessions feels like playing a random, edgy PS2 racing game that no one has ever heard of. I genuinely fail to see how this is a groundbreaking, definitive record of music history. I guess the British writers wanted to include "The UK's answer to NIN". This is boring, bland, and repetitive. 4/10
Not bad, but boring
Not a huge fan. Early songs sounded like they wanted to be gorillas-esque
well frankly this sucked
If I ever need to walk through a precarious environment in slow motion, I hope this album is playing in the background.
Noise. Background noise.
It was vibes but like for the 70s80s? which was fun but not my cup of year too much synth and stuff
Fine. Nothing spectacukar
Not bad background music with one or two standout tracks. Rest is a bit forgettable.
not my style
Reading the reviews beforehand made me expect something terrible out of this. It wasn't. It was... okay. I didn't love it either, though. I felt like, for most of the songs, like they forgot to include lyrics. It just wasn't very interesting.
I would have expected to like this album more but found it to be just okay. Not an artist I will seek out. Could be interesting as a soundtrack but on its own it’s not enough.
Uma boa psicodelia, mas que seria mais surpreendente se tivesse acontecido nos anos 1970.
i’m sorry but it’s getting a two, it has to happen
I didn't really get into this. Maybe after another few listens, but not yet.
Irgendwas zwischen Fisch und Fleisch ... ! Nicht wirklich überzeugend!
There is absolutely nothing special about this. Sounds like a high school student was bored.
I don't know how to feel about it, the first song is awesome, but the others not so much...
Fine, but not my cup of tea.
Yawn. Dirge had some promise, Aisha was good until it got weird, but in the end there's nothing here worth putting on this list or coming back to.
Should have been half the length. There's a handful of decent songs but it's like they were paid by the minute and just repeated shit over and over.
fine, not objectionable
one of those albums that makes you think, 'maybe there aren't 1001 albums worth listening to'
Atmospheric grunge/rock. A lot of strange bleeps and bloops were added to make the songs annoying, and the lyrics ranged from nothing to annoying. Not a good listen. Standouts: Dirge and Lever Street.
May revisit later, bur it took me 3 days to finish because I was so bored.
When it comes to British DJ output I'm going to have to take the project's word for it that a release is culturally important or had some impact on its own genre or was a part of a musical dialogue with other musics. I confess this today only because there are other releases I've been given where it's been obvious to me that the taste between myself and the producer were not a match so I just dinged them some stars and moved on. And while there have been a handful (like two so far) times where I've given a DJ/producer a four or above rating, it's rare that I hear something in the category and both enjoy the music and know something about its production and reception that I feel good about doing so. // Insofar as Death In Vegas is concerned: great name and a laid back vibe that can be described as darkly, cool. Unfortunately, I'd argue that album quality cannot be sustained by vibe alone. The vocal guest stars are fine, from what I understand the bloke on the second track is not saying that I've lost my dinner, but that's what I thought initially. The themes on Aisha seem so totally cliched in that late 90s way as to be funny to me. The other one or ones that come later were largely forgettable. // Okay, I wrote a lot just because I felt like it but I'm not telling you anything new. I am mirroring the music. // This record is barely just fine. The only surprise on it for me was the amount of traditional instrumentation on it. // My beef slash point might be that I expect each record to be here for a reason and oftentimes I can't really hear it on its own with studio/DJ productions, especially when it sounds just like someone who happened to have the right gear at the right time and knew the right people (i.e. this record).
Uneventful
A waste of time.
I'm sure I have listened to it about 10min ago, but I don't remember anything.
Low stakes.
90’s hits to smoke opium to Not great
I feel like he proves he can make good songs but doesn’t finish the job. The result is often boring since few of the tracks are worthy of being pure instrumentals.
there's a world where I can listen to over 2 hours of somewhat downbeat electronica. But this ain't that world. Was basically background music while I was working. Forgot it was on, looked up when I remembered it was playing and realized I still had over an hour of left to go in the album. Some of the stuff I was able to pay attention to was alright...I guess. But overall it was forgettable.
Meh. Not particularly memorable and not something I will be going back to.
I keep wanting to like this album, I like the build up in a lot of the songs, but they all have the build up to.... nowhere. It'll find a cool groove, and then do nothing with it. There's no crescendo or release of tension, just build up and hold. Even Iggy Pop and a Rolling Stones song couldn't hit the spots it needed for me.
This album was...interesting. The beats seemed to never go anywhere. A lot of them started off great and then they just...stayed where they were. I listened to both discs and enjoyed the "Dirge - Slam Mix" and "Dirge - Adrian Sherwood Remix" better than the original version of "Dirge". Liked Songs: "Dirge" , "Flying" , "Aladdin's Story" , "Neptune City" , and "One More Time" Low Point: The weird screaming around the 3:20 mark of "Aisha"
liked songs: Dirge Very meh. I'm not sure what it is about the sound, but something about the production felt annoying to me. I wasn't very engaged with any of the songs, and the guest singer spots didn't do anything to save the songs. 1.5
Thoughts before listening: I think I remember these guys, but I don't remember them being all that big of a deal. Maybe they were huge in Europe or something? In my mind they're like a hard rock/techno combo sort of like the Prodigy maybe? I'm not really sure. Review: This is the sound that music journalists were telling us would be the future of music back in 1999 when this was released. Techno beats forming the backbeat of guitar driven rock music. As someone who was in college at this time and obsessed with punk, indie, and jammy rock bands, I never quite got the appeal of this sound. To me it was more what you would hear in the background of a sci-fi movie than something I was going to put on and listen to in the dorm room. Still though, I do have a certain nostalgia for this sound. I like a couple of songs here, including "Dirge", but overall this basically just sounds like background music to me. I'll give it 2-stars.
Repetitive and unpleasant.
I didn't like this much
Boring and forgettable background-rock
Like a proto-Kasabian
Favorite Track: Dirge
Pretty standard late 90s affair.
Day 51 - October 16th, 2024 B B B BORING!!!! 2/5
Not really for me
This was really boring. Kind of all over the place and none of it good. Unnecessary. 2/5
Very dark and gritty feel to this album. Felt like a soundtrack to a fast paced action thriller where the lights are always flickering. Not a terrible album, but overall it didn’t do too much for me. Another head-scratcher of an addition to this list.
This would be 100% cooler with a chick singer. It has major Sneaker Pimp vibes but the second the guy sings, the "cool" factor goes away.
Why
Fine for background, nothing that struck me as interesting.
There are some pretty fun grooves in here, but the majority of the album is just noise to me
Gear: DCA ÆON 2 Noire Artwork: 👢👢👢 👢👢👢 👢👢👢 Mix: 🎧😐🆗 Musik: 🎛️🤘🗿 Wertung: 👢👢(👢)/5
intens en beetje edgy
This deserves to be on the list since it's an example of the kind of studio based soundtrack style music that appeared in the late 1990s. It uses a seamless mix of electronics, sampling and live band which had become possible by this point technologically. It's just not very interesting or remarkable, similar to the Barry Adamson album in this list, it's more style than substance. 'Aisha' was the gimmicky hit single with Iggy on vocals, and 'Lever Street' stood out as sounding like it should have been on 'Obscured by Clouds' by Pink Floyd. Yeah passable but pointless. Another footnote.
Soul Auctioneer sounds like a bad Gorillaz song (so, a Gorillaz song), but the rest are just boring
Not my jam
Niet echt mn ding
Like a knock off version of Sneaker Pimps - Becoming X... And a bad knock off at that
A bunch of songs in need of a singer and lyrics. "Aladdin's Story", for one, isn't telling much of a story without any words now is it? Something about the sound made me want to like this but it didn't quite make it.
Moody broody gloomy background music
90s electronic noises are done better by other dudes.
DNF - I read a review that said this was a cut rate screamadelica. And I thought, hey that’s not fair! But they were correct. This was frustrating to listen to and I found myself skipping a lot.
Didn’t listen to all of it, but it was ok
Alternated between movie soundtrack and video game soundtrack.
Sold 100,000 in the UK, so there's that, I guess. It's anyone's guess what the ACTUAL GOAL of this music is. I mean, it's fun to go down to the studio and just make noise, and I like the drums/bass/guitar formula as much as the next person. But what are you bringing to this party? Especially in 1999, la fin de siecle. Post-Radiohead, Post-Nirvana, Post-Britpop, Post-Portishead. The bookending songs, "Dirge" and "Neptune City" are the most interesting ones on the album, and I won't remember them tomorrow (I barely remember them now). Not really songs so much as a kind of background noise you might hear at the new latin-fusion restaurant in some mid-population city like Des Moines or Santa Clarita. Just okay, just enough edge to make it almost tip over into the badass side of the rock spectrum without really hurting anyone. Looks like a lot of effort went into this, but for what?
I didn’t get much enjoyment from this one.
mi ha lasciato più confusa che altro
*suono di profondo sospiro*
Starts really strong with Dirge’s buildup but everything else is just boring noise for the most part, something to put on the background than actively listen too.
Pretty I retesting overall. Kind of feels like the gorillas with a lot less lyrics
Irritating.
It's fine but forgettable. Some of the tracks tickled my brain. On the plus side it made me think about Bob Dylan being a Soul Auctioneer.
DJ concept albums. Surely we are not encouraging this???
I like some. The rest, not so much.
Just alright.
pretty meh
Not really my taste. Might be good around Halloween tho.
Remind me again: Why is this on the list?!? .... Hello?!? .... 2/5
interesting combination of big beat and rock with influence of shoegaze and what would be called post punk in the future. good background music.
This far from the worst thing I’ve heard, but I still didn’t like it much. Something about the song “Aisha” really put me off in an extreme way. Overall just didn’t care for this.
A compilation of annoying sounds.
Felt disjointed stylistically. A little boring
At times I feel it, at times I don't. When I don't, it's boring. Favorite song: Lever street.
Vibey synth stuff. It's listenable, but it's also been done to death. The genre of "repeating electronic noise with very gradual and minute variation spread across six minutes" might've been revolutionary back in the 90s, but it's not so impressive anymore. Not everything about the album is necessarily bad. Some of the tracks, such as Dirge, Soul Auctioneer, and Flying have a chord progression that's just interesting and exciting enough to be engaging. Flying, in particular, exhibits a level of slowly rising energy and adventure that I really liked. My main issue is that most of the remaining tracks are just not interesting (Death Threat, Lever Street, Broken Little Sister) or kind of irritating (Aisha). Speaking of Aisha, what's going on with that random screaming, weird monsterish mumbling, and out-of-place synth noise? Coupled with what's essentially a one-chord retro video game soundtrack, the result isn't great. I feel a lot of the tracks, particularly that one, could've been improved by cutting down on the experimentation and adding a good crooning singer. 2/5 Key tracks: Dirge, Soul Auctioneer, Flying
2/5
Experimentell - interessant aber meist nicht gut.
Couldn’t find my way to connect with this one. Some interesting sound textures but not enough to wow me, and it’s looooong.
Another 90's British group I've never heard of. Lol. I enjoyed the first track. The rest became background music pdq. Maybe this album could be replaced with Souvlaki by Slowdive.
Surprisingly, i enjoyed this much more than I expected. while I am not ready to give it 3 stars….2 1/2 would have worked if there were half stars. So it’s a two star album with some upside.
"Organized" noise
I love me some experimental electronica. I like juxtapositions between rock and rave. But this is a CD of background music played in an arts and crafts store that’s trying to be edgy. Was disengaged throughout.
Dollar Store Gorillaz.
I was somewhat intrigued by the minimalist trip hop of the first track but didn’t like the vocals on the second and was soon bored. Some of the sounds are inventive but there was not enough here to carry my interest throughout the album.
Just sort of boring electronic music with some rock elements. It's fine, just sounds like I should be hacking a mainframe while I'm listening.
Never heard about Death In Vegas before, but I can see that they, as well as so many, many other albums on this list, were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Maybe we should start not including every nominee, right?
It's fine as long as it stays instrumental. I nope right out with their lyrics.
I didn’t hate this enough to warrant a 1, but most likely will not be revisiting. 1.5/2
Add another one to the “why did this make the list” category. I mean I guess I liked it because it incorporated some real instruments with electronic, which added a more human aspect to it. But the music was forgettable. What happens in Vegas will definitely be staying in Vegas.
Liked it more than the electronic one we had yesterday, but not a lot more
It was fine. Some good grooves and riffs. Some of the songs seemed perfect for a Matrix or Blade movie. Neo walking into a bar before taking out some mofos. I could see putting this on in the background while working or something. However, I’m just not sure what makes this unique or that intersting. Why is this a must listen? And the songs seemed similar. Layout a beat and bass line and then layer on other things that build and build and build and then…just end. There’s no climax or resolution. Truly some blue balls music.
Glad this album came right after Underworld. I did not like it as much and thus rating a notch lower. Easy peasy. 2.25/5
Kind of background noise resident sleeper. Nothing really good
Blind album and artist. Had its moments, but the lows were repetitive, and uninteresting to me.
pretty bad vibes
My review was going to be 'surely one Primal Scream is more than enough', and then I saw the cast list. I stick with that. A few interesting bits but it feels like another attempt at trying to make nineties indie rock more 'eclectic'. Which mostly (doesn't) work. Definitely didn't need two discs of this.
This has a very dirty feeling throughout. It got right under my fingernails, and not in a good way, either. It sounds like it was written with soundtrack licenses in mind. Very formulaic.
I usually like this kind of stuff (darker, goodies beats) but I struggled with this one. It just did not grab my attention, and there's nothing on here I can't live without. 2/5
I'm not opposed to a little weirdness but this had a few tracks that were out there
This just sauntered along lacking any inspiration and depth.
Ja niet heel bijzonder. Iets te experimenteel voor mij.
Most of this felt a bit like a low budget primal scream. There were bits that were decent, one song that was a sort of overdriven electronic nine inch nailsy thing, but by and large I wasn't too fussed.
Didn't do too much for me. Alright in parts, but also some beeps and whirs in at least one song that annoyed me. Wouldn't choose to listen to this again. Dirge was the best track. 2.5
Sì beh
Unable to finish Some really cool instrumentation which I would think “fuck yeah, that’s a sick bit” and then they’d just play it over and over for two minutes. Death threat was a great example of this. I feel like these guys are great producers, and would be great to have in the writing room because some of the parts are incredible. But as far as song structure goes I just don’t get it
Death in Vegas Sludgey, electronic, psychedelic. There’s some cool instrumental but it all feels like an intro until it feels like an outro. Sounds like a soundtrack. Sludgey, electronic, psychedelic. 2.5
I didn’t hate this but I’m having a hard time saying anything about this. I liked Alladins story. Aisha creeped me out and not in a good way.
Mostly instrumental and musically mostly robot noise. Death in Vegas is good at what they do, but I don't much like what they do.
Yeah … no. Not my thing at all. Won’t dis it with one star but won’t be returning to this one.
Hot, sexual noise rock/pop. Like Sonic Youth met an analog synthesizer. Feels like an electrical fire.
I honestly dig this vibe a bit and how the tracks build, that said this is very much background music to me and all kinda sounds the same
Not bad but not special. Very forgettable.
There was one good song, but I didnt really like it
some cool stuff, but forgot i was listening to music half the time.
A few interesting tracks but... weird ... 2 star
Yeah nah.
rough
no thanks
I was pretty bored throughout listening to this. Hard to understand why this made the 1001 list.
Minder fra gamle dage men holder bare ikke helt med nutidens briller
A really promising start with Dirge, but it all went downhill.
Oh joy. Another album of noise. At least this one has some sort of melodic structure unlike the German nonsense from last week.
Okay techno/triphop/shoegaze. Not something I’d ever feel a desire to listen to again, but it being the assigned album didn’t ruin my day. I wish a genie had offered the band the ability to take itself a little less seriously in exchange for having to make every song on the album two minutes shorter. But other than those issues, this was fine.
Lots of cool ideas that mostly end in a bloated boring soup. Lofi beats to study to before YouTube existed except that it's not lofi enough for that even. Dirge, Soul Auctioneer, Aladdin's Story, Neptune City, and One More Time were all pretty good, but didn't make up for what was around them. I really wanted to like Aisha but is just reminded me of a bad version of "I Was A Prisoner In Your Skull" from Swans two years later. I really tried to give this one a proper go. Came back to it multiple times and it never clicked. A strong 2 here. I like the idea but it doesn't come together.
Best Song: Dirge. If I had a car, this would probably be good driving music. Worst Song: Aisha. The vocals detracted severely from an otherwise interesting electronic track. It starts in pure edgelord territory, but by the end it literally sounds like Elmo is screaming. Overall: Why do so many electronics albums of this era struggle to limit themselves to just interesting music? They need to bookend each track with some kind of analog noodling before "landing" on some rhythm as if they've just found the ghost in the machine. That kind of device is interesting once, not on every track, where it just becomes clutter that gets in the way between the listener and the track they want to listen to. That being said, some of the grooves on this album are pretty good.
Pretty good electro-rock album. I do prefer Scorpio which I know better and has Hands Around my Neck. Unfortunately nothing here comes close to the menace that that track has. 2.5 stars
Meh
Meh, kind bland and monotone. I won't be remembering this one.
More obscure British rubbish. There is far better music coming out of the UK. Honestly the last couple songs of the album were the best.
duplicate
I dunno, maybe I’d dig this electronica stuff if I (still?) did drugs. Or if I had done (at some point) the “right” drugs. But I don’t, or I didn’t, so I just don’t get it. This is better than some of the electronica this project has served up, but it is still, at best, background music. It’s got some decent grooves, but nothing happens with them…. Except repetition. My main reaction to this album is BORED. Each song, after a minute or so, just merges into the overall background. Actually, background isn’t the right word, it implies a certain not-intrusive feel. This is not quiet music. Again, I imagine this being the sound of a dark club with flashing lights and lots of folk doing drugs that didn’t exist when I was in my 20s. And even when I was younger, I wasn’t into that kind of scene. The best analogy to my days would be to say this is More Iron Butterfly than Pink Floyd. You know: In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, the cool little 3 minute song that’s really a 17+ minute exploration of… …. Well, something mind altered. Not that I would know… That said, Alsha, with Iggy Pop vocals (more spoken than sung) rises above it. It could be a pretty decent 3:30 song, but it drones on for almost 6 minutes, and loses its edge. Really just not my thing. I’ll give it 2 stars for the almost cool Iggy Pop song. I didn’t give up on the listen, but I wasn’t sad when it was done. 2/5
Felt like a lot of tracks setting up a song but no actual songs. They had fun though, 2/5
This is not the kind of music I like.
Pretty fun to listen to, though too many random noises throughout and overall pretty bad. Felt like they had tried to copy Nathan Fielder: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6BNE62xGqE 1.5/5
The only thing keeping it from a 1 rating is that it's Christmas Eve and I don't want or deserve that kind of karma. There's also a chance I didn't even listen to this. Oh sure, I played the album and had it on for both of my ears to hear, but that should tell you the impact it had on me. I get this dealt to me on December 26th and I likely vote down. As it is, it avoids the dustbin. Merry Christmas Darling.
Meh
Basically a "nothing" album for me. Some boring soundscapes and too-long electronic songs. All the vocals are terrible. No idea why this is on a must-listen list. Fav track: Luther's Funk
This album was pretty much uneventful. It was good enough to relax and get lost in the simple electronic style but it also was bad enough for me to not really notice anything good that happened during it. Overall it was an album that missed the mark for me. This was some weird gloomy indie electronic album. That combination of styles isn’t really needed. 3.8/10
An eclectic mix of music. It’s unique, but a bit too left field for my liking.
Better than most of the electronic I've been exposed to here but still monotonous and boring in alot of spots.
Back ground noise.
More mid techno. 2.5/5
Just ok
Background music. 2.5 stars.
One listen was enough. No thanks.
Vibey and boring simultaneously, almost an impressive combo. I don’t think I will listen again.
Theatrical - meh
I really really really can't stand this guy's edgelord-ass vocals. I don't know the last time I hated a song as much as Broken little sister. Some of the instrumental cuts are nice and vibey, but the overall palette just doesn't sit right with me. Soul auctioneer wasn't bad either, kinda sounds like Bob Dylan. Overall, I can't imagine wanting to listen to this front to back again.
Pop un tanto experimental con bastante instrumentalización y sintetizadores. Ha pasado sin pena ni gloria. Nada especialmente destacable
Not my vibe
Dirge is fun. The rest sounds like the ambient music played to open a NIN concert.
Honestly can’t recall this at all. All I remember was finding it okay but the degree to which the music evades my memory there must be missing something more than usual. Or maybe it’s just me, whoops
Tråkigt, otåligt men inte hemskt
Listened to it while distracted, it seemed like background music.
Not bad per say, but not for me. If anything seemed interesting, it wasn't by the time the song was done.
It was okay
Facking vaag niet mijn cup of tea Met drugs kan wel goeie zijn of live maar hier alleen op mijn kamer nah
Guitar, drums, bass, some organ and a mix of sounds, some vocals (a hint of Dylan on a couple of the tracks) and some screaming. A right moody album with some death threats
This was pleasant enough but didn't like wow me, I think it would be good music to do a long dancing sesh to with other people but wasn't all that interested just listening to it on my own if I'm honest
Kind of fine but generally a nothingness for me. A bit AI-y . The vocals in track two were very familar, I looked looked up the guy from the band convinced I knew his voice. Anyway, it was actually Bobby Gillespie singing on that track.
A nothing album filled with background noise.
It was an ok album by Death In Vegas, full of the 90s electronica sounds, yet there was something lacking. There were some good beats and overall feeling, but The Contino Sessions didn't quite hit the mark. Best: Soul Auctioneer Worst: Broken Little Sister
I really wanted to like this, maybe more than I did. It’s got cool sounds but for me it doesn’t go much beyond that as overly long tracks and a lack of lyrics made me less engaged.
This was pretty bland for me. Definitely backgrounded in after a couple of tracks maybe a bit unfairly but hey. Liked the blend of electronic production and love instrumentation but beyond that felt a bit middle of the road. Two and a half. Fave track: Soul Auctioneer
Found this pretty underwhelming - at best it's a not all that great imitation of better 90s bands with more interesting sounds. Not all that compelling or fresh I suppose, maybe just mediocre rather than bad. Fave track: Lever Street
I'm usually a fan of space-y trip hop but girl these compositions are boring af. 2.5/5
A bit too weird and discordant for me
Un odieux album sans chant que j'ai dû écouter à deux reprises, la faute à un endormissement intervenu lors de la première écoute.
Just not my cup of tea. Enjoyed Soul Auctioneer though.
I'd never heard Death in Vegas before. It was solidly ok. Some good tracks like 'Dirge', a lot of less interesting stuff that faded into the background. Not anything I'd listen to again and I didn't feel like it was especially original.
pretty boring for the most part with some somewhat interesting passages here and thereZzz…..aisha is what knocked it down a star for me though.
2+
Oh joy. Another mediocre electronic album. "The Contino Sessions" isn't terrible as far as electronic goes, I guess. There are zero stand out tracks and it certainly never bangs but it was fine as background music for a few tracks. Unfortunately, it quickly outstayed its welcome. At only 48 minutes long, I was still super ready for it to be over.
It was OK but nothing grabbed me particularly.
A mish mash of experimental electronica with bits of strange vocals. I was hopeful in the beginning, Dirge is a song I recognize and like. The rest of the album, though not bad at all, is not for me. 2.5
Reminds me of Radiohead, with a little bit of Aerosmith.
It’s good at the start but then it just becomes boring 2/5
Listened to this on a run and genuinely forgot it was playing... which says a lot The opener was loud-cum-gloomy, but the rest of the album disappeared into obscurity
Nothing special
Loved the percussions on "One More Time". In it's entirety the album didn't gel. Nothing held it together. Sometimes cool and often so repetitious and boring. Vocals didn't help make it more interesting. Hard to concentrate on the music quality because it just fell into the background.
Can def hear this influence in contemporary Weeknd tracks. Sort of sounds like Gorillaz covering the Weeknd for a GenX/boomer audience. I didn't love the album. The songs kind of started blurring together half way through, w/ the interruption of the Iggy Pop yelling in Aisha. Will probably not re-listen though might come back to it come Halloween time for the vibes.
I don’t know what it is about electronica. It’s just not for me. It sounds cool at first but I cannot stand a full album of this. Is something wrong with me
Alleen die track met Iggy Pop was bekend bij mij, de rest was als achtergrond muziek prima te negeren.
Dit is me allemaal iets té onsamenhangend
Another club album, and a pretty good one. Just not for me.
Nothing exciting. Good overall
I hate listening to something and thinking it's just a jumble of irritating noise. Because that's what so many said about many different genres and iterations of rock music over the years, and it just made all of them sound old and out-of-touch. Am I old and out-of-touch? Because a lot of Death in Vegas' "Contino Sessions" sounds like aimless noise. "Dirge" was a decent start, but the vocals on "Soul Auctioneer" were a turnoff and then "Death Threat" descended into noise with random arhythmic beeps. "Flying" was almost tolerable until the last couple minutes of an overlong track, and the Iggy Pop spoken word ramblings of an acid trip future on "Aisha" didn't help. "Lever Street" almost brough tit back, and then "Aladdin's Story" finally delivered something song-like, but it wasn't written by Death in Vegas. It was, incredibly randomly, a never-used Mick Jagger/Keith Richards collaboration? Listenability continued with "Broken Little Sister," aided by The Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid, and "Neptune City" was also ok. The version of the album on Amazon continued with three more decent songs before a long string of remixes, but we can't count those as the original ended at "Neptune City." Those last three tracks save "Contino Sessions" from being as single-star worthy as Mercury Rev, but this is still not one I'd leave on by choice.
Da e greit, men mislike da litt og kinda
Even on a plane this got old.
instrumental meio experimental, nao curti
I was excited for this because I like electronic rock and the last week has been filled with 1970s albums. This was pretty boring.
Got old pretty quickly. Not my style
My co-judge and I listened to this on our drive back from Ottawa. The first song builds nicely and has a moody feel to it. It’s catchy, in a Levi’s commercial, movie-theme kind of way (I cheated). The vocalist on the next one provides some spark but the underlying mood and rhythm is similar to song one. A complaint of my co-judge was that there are a number of beat-oriented songs – some that run past 7 minutes – without discernable melodies or hooks. This remains true even when the songs become more guitar-oriented. Occasionally the vocalist saves the day, but not always (Iggy Pop, for example). This is one of those LPS that didn’t sell much and critics ignored. Between a 2 and a 3 for me.
A lot of sound scaping I wasn’t really into. Some songs were alright but overall wouldn’t listen again
Completely NOT a must hear.
This was kinda boring. Some cool sounds and ideas, and I like "Soul Auctioneer," but it just sorta droned on. I should probably listen closer.
idk
I spent the first few songs wishing it had lyrics, then regretting it when they did eventually have them.
not bad as background EDM but more hypnotic than dance
Didn't completely hate but wouldn't listen again.
I don’t get the appeal of electronica although this is better than most of what I’ve heard. Not interested in hearing this album or band again.
Not the wiliest thing I’ve ever heard but I didn’t like it. I’m just not really sure who this stuff is for and would need a fan to explain it to me.
Yawn. The worst criticism I can give an album is that it is boring. This album was boring.
I think my main problem is that is just feels like background music. Feels like trance music, so by nature it’s repetitive. There were some cool moments sprinkled throughout, but I didn’t like the majority of the album. Really don’t like any of the tracks with vocals
2.8 - I read some of the rave reviews for this album on Metacritic and am feeling confused. While I do like some of the production - the guitar feedback and bleeps/bloops - overall, it's pretty forgettable, even despite Iggy Pop's strange lyrical contribution on "Aisha." Besides "Broken Little Sister" I likely won't give this record a second thought.
Aisha oli hyvää menoa, muuten ei oikein iskenyt
Aissa- miten tiukka veto Aisha on. Muuten vähän laiskaa, 2/5.
The album is OK to listen to, but it isn't very original. They are using existing music styles without putting a unique spin on them. For example, classic 60s-70s rock is a key influence, while "Death Threat" and "Flying" sound just like 80s sci-fi movie soundtracks. And even though the quality is pretty good, the album ends up being forgettable.
Well...I don't know what it is. I don't dislike it, but also don't like...I want to rate it with 3 stars, but it's too strange to be "medium"...
So far I hate the vocal style of the lead singer. Lazy, talking, incomprehensible, jumble of words. The music itself is ok. Not something that I would listen to again, just not my thing.
Edward Cullen probably listens to this
A little hmm and a lot of meh.
This album is a giant MEH for me. What is with all these late 90s-early 2000s british "rock" records lately. Droning and pretentious. Only redeeming quality is it's short. Song added to Playlist: Dirge
n
I like shoegaze, but this electronica-fusion piece is a bit on the generic side, no real flavor at all. The guest vocalists were excellent and fitting with the music, but I felt they carried the show.
The Contino Sessions isn't really for me, it's moody electronica with a bit of dirt and grit to it, but nothing lasts or resonates. 2/5.
Idk it was on but it didn’t really grab my attention.
Qualquer coisa.
I'm pretty sure if you hang out at hot topic, are making a sexy vampire thriller, or LARP, this album is for you. otherwise, it's kind of eh
Dirge and Aisha are great, but much of the rest is a bit samey
Actually not that bad, but there are some pretty weird sound choices at times, that does not work out in the musics favor. Pretty boring. But allright instrumental music. Ambient noise, but not the best in that category. Really like "Dirge" and "Lever Street" 2
a massive meh from me, dawg
meh
