Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Just ok electronic. Nothing completely shocking or exciting, and frankly a little disappointing in the middle to back half.
Мутьная муть
Liked some of it. Some was obnoxious. Most songs were too long (unnecessarily drawn out).
Like a cross between Primal Scream and Kasabian but without anything to stand out, sing along to or remember.
este álbum suena como ruido para mi
September 28, 2021 This sucks. Repetitive and tries too hard to be edgy. The only redeeming quality is "Luther's Funk" which is the only thing that saved this from one star.
They’ve done better albums than this one
The singing in South Auctioneer really turned me off. The songwriting just isn't very good nor is the delivery. The music itself is fine, but there's nothing terribly groundbreaking or unique about it especially in 1999. I get the feeling that Death in Vegas take themselves too seriously and are really trying to sound dark and dangerous. Not even an appearance from Iggy Pop salvage this album (though non-coincidentally, the song on which he appears, Aisha, is the highlight of the album).
Strong start with "Dirge." Thought I was going to kike "Aisha" knowing Iggy Pop was on it, but I did not like it. Overall very hit and miss.
Wow. What a downer. Guess that's the point though, right? Well, fuck that. Not only is the mood consistently dour, it's consistently boring as well.
First Listen. Nice background music. Not much else.
Ok: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Didn't enjoy: 2, 3, 4. In other words, probaly won't listen to this album again - 2 stars.
I appreciated the heavy organ on Lever Street. Almost a 3.
The first song with its slow build gave me a chill up my spine, which is a hell of a way to start an album. Unfortunately, the rest of the album fell short of the expectations it set up in the first song. From then on, the pieces range from bad to mediocre. The songs don't have anything to them that makes them stand out from one another. Disappointing.
never heard of this band. wasn't anything awful or compelling. 2.0
Eh
Aged badly, bad taste?
You want some early electronica? Well here is some repetitive, uninspired tracks for you that are a bit too long.
I don't know. It was fine I guess. Kind of bland and just noise to me though.
Interesting stuff here
Industrial Brit Pop? Sooo, I guess shoegaze? Some good buildups. Some cool sounds. Little bit of a background album though.
Meh
Something different to listen to but didn't particularly entertain two star Terry. 2*
Very eclectic horror. That sums it up for me. I gotta say I liked it in a strange way. Today this would have fit in with Interstellar movies. I did not like the length of the songs. I felt they were trying to burn them into my brain which was a creepy similarity to the album cover. X-ray photos of maybe Aisha’s shoes! I will keep this title in mind for Halloween or funerals. Felt a little like Def Lepered from the 70’s. Broken Sister &Aisha were my 2 favorite. And do not forget Aisha....he is a Murderer.
Neptune City" Released: 30 August 1999 (vinyl only) "Aisha" Released: 31 January 2000 "Dirge" Released: 24 April 2000 "One More Time" Released: 10 July 2000 (vinyl only
Mira que me gusta el rock progresivo, el instrumental, las canciones largas, pero los Death in Vegas NO. Lo he intentado varias veces. En este disco solo se salva para mi gusto Aisha con la voz de Iggy Pop. Prescindible excepto ese tema, le daré un 2 por que en general sería un 1 a todo más un 4 a Aisha.
semi dark and grungy sounds, not my cup of tea.
Oof.
Not feeling it
Very mediocre
A few good songs.
Look at me a less emotional Portishead and 80's guitar with glimpses of sunshine like a winter in Finland in January just after blue monday.
Meh
I'm not into the type of electronica that takes a measure or two and repeats it 256 times in a row. That's not what this whole album was, but it was enough of it to really beat me down. There's some decent stuff buried here. I'm not sure it's worth the effort to dig out. Best track: Aladdin's Story
This stinks mid 2
Day903 - they’ve unlocked a new hate, whatever this gloomy techno is
I had really high hopes for this album based off the first song which I thought was kind of cool. What followed was not cool. I'm really not a fan of the weird post-punk, goth sound of the 90s. It feels very performative. I dig goth music in general just not this.
Malo
pretty unlistenable
This was a dud unfortunately.
Lever street is almost a vibe
I usually enjoy this type of music, but there was a specific distorted whirring noise through this album which was very unpleasant and caused me to get really tense.
I've never heard anything from this creep that was worth listening to
Nothing remarkable.
This album almost felt unfinished. Some of the "beats" were ok but lacked vocals to turn them into a completed song.
bleh
This started off ok, until he started singing. A disappointing weekend album since ai had no interest in revisiting this
Oof... pouring one out for the reviewers who were linked to the two hour version. The original version is forty-eight minutes, guys. https://open.spotify.com/album/4qUKzyXuy3GSzQD5RTJLdq
What is this pretentious Prada-wearing bullshit - Oh... It's Soho music. That tracks, and it's... interesting. Giving it a 2/10 is generous but that's what I see in it. I haven't got a clue why this album is important or why it was awarded any prizes. It's a mish-mash of electric sounds and synths with occasionally some mumbling vocals. There's a couple of songs that are palatable but in general it's just sort of generic electronica. Crystal Method was doing this but way better and didn't have the pretentiousness that somehow oozes from these songs. Also it's a long album, there's a couple 6 and 7 minute songs that just drag on. Racing gamers know "Aesha" from Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec title screen theme - which is arguably the only song worth listening to on the album (it's still not great, very abbrasive audio). Final rating 2/10, would not listen to again.
Not my cup of tea
First song was repetitive but pleasantly hypnotic. Second song, as soon as the vocals drop and those crazy dissonant guitars sort of simulating sirens, I got really annoyed immediately. I don't think this is for me either.
Not for me
No my style
More shit UK Electronica. Cool.
Based on all the genres attached to this project, Neo-Psychedelia, Trip Hop, and Psychedelic Rock, you'd think this would be a beautiful companion piece to Massive Attack's 1998 album Mezzanine but honestly it couldn't be anything further from it. This project starts off with a killer opening track with Dirge and then slowly loses its' own structure until the music is utterly unrecognizable by the end. Comparing Aisha to Lever Street is like apples and oranges and yet they are grouped together in the same basket, it makes no fucking sense whatsoever. I would praise this album for keeping the psychedelic production the entire time, but they can't even get that super easy brownie point without screwing that up too. I feel like I am aimlessly walking around in a circle but that circle never loops around when I turn on The Contino Sessions. Comparing the borderline industrial start to this project to the watered down Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ending on Neptune City is nothing short of comical and upsetting. I had such high hopes this would win me over but alas it let me down on levels I can not even begin to comprehend. Whomp whomp...
I can't believe I heard all of that waiting for something to happen
It's just noise?? Very 90s noise but not very fun
1 star, didn't like
Good for the style
Honestly it was a terrible experience for me. I ended up dropping the album halfway through. I didn’t get the music, didn’t get any meaning from it, and most importantly I felt absolutely nothing while listening. It all just came across as noise rather than something engaging or expressive. If I’m going for electronic music, I’d much rather go to something like Kraftwerk. Even with psychedelic stuff, I enjoy that space a lot—albums like Disconnected by Stiv Bators or Suicide by Suicide (which I especially love) have character and feeling. This just didn’t have that for me. Overall, really not for me at all.
3/17/26. Didn't feel this one, thought it was a bit boring. Sounds like it tried to pull from big beat and electronica from the era but a bit subdued.
somethings going on and its not for me.
Feels like the soundtrack to an edgy movie, but not a good one... 1/5
Could barely listen to it all... I think the pitchfork review was right- bad toothless "rock" that wants to be edgey.
Too much style, too little substance
I listened to this home alone, late in the afternoon as the heavenly shades of night were falling, probably not a good idea. Boy are we a long way from The Platters just by the by. And out of the mist some kind of voice was calling, but it did not make sense. When these things get thrown up I always think about Ern Malley, could we call these records the Ern Malley Effect? Did these guys just program some noises and then sat back to see if anyone took it seriously, as a laugh?
Just awful. Couldn't wait for it to be over.
Very repetitive noise. And so long. No thanks.
It's nice that they made an album specifically for late 90s action movies.
chato p caralho filho o nome é legal e termina ai
Struggled to get through this one, found it alternated between dull and annoying. Favourite song: Aladdin's Story Least: Death Threat
Damn, this list sure loves its generic 90s electronic, huh? Well I sure don't, and this is one of the worst ones yet. Like I don't even know in what setting this could be enjoyed. It's so uninteresting, but not even in a way that it could be playing in the background at the club. It's too "technical" for that kind of setting, but too generic and repetitive to actually be enjoyed in any other way where you're actually listening to it with intent. In conclusion, this suck and is really annoying, I really don't need any more of this generic electronic garbage.
There are some albums that I have to read the whole Wikipedia page to understand why it was included on this list. And sometimes even that doesn't help or make me feel any better about my time wasted. This album is one of those times.
I gave it a one because it refers to my birth place but besides that I’m not a fan
Yea...this wasn't a great listen for me. The songs were overall pretty boring and went on for longer than I should. I thought Dirge and Lever Street were okay but besides that I didn't like any of the other songs. Overall I'd give this a 1.5
Background music. Non sense music.
oooo nnnoooo ugh
1.5 stars I had never heard of this. Then I looked at the Wikipedia and the top thing about the album was that they were included in the 1001 album list… never a good sign. The band name alone is worth 1 star. But this album does not have an identity, it is random, formless, feels like a B sides record for a bad that isn’t even that good to begin with. There are hints of decent moments, but all in all it’s forgettable. I found myself wanting to skip it and as a rule I haven’t done that yet with this experiment.
Death in Halifax (UK) for me. 1/5 28/12/25
This album was all over the place man, I’m still not sure what genre this is. It started off as video game loading music then somehow morphed into the music you’d hear in the ending montage of an early 2000’s teen drama. Very odd listen but I’m assuming since the name of the album has sessions in it that they just put out random recordings??? I’m confused.
Whatever.
1.5 - DNF
No es mi estilo
1.5
After one song it felt like it might have a bit more juice than some of the other albums the author did 90s drugs to, but that turned out to be wishful thinking.
I've listened to The Killers who are from Las Vegas, "Oooh Las Vegas", "Las Vegas Basement", and "Leaving Las Vegas". This Las Vegas piece is utter garbage. Favorite Track: "Soul Auctioneer".
"Dirge" is good.
This is 1000% not my thing. Moody boring electronic music just doesn't do anything sorry. Doesn't help that the few times there are vocals it sounds like Bob Dylan, without the writing or the charm to make Dylan work. 2/10
has that The Prodigy vibe, but different from my liking
Boo
Music that would be in John Wick. Could not get into it though. Was just waiting for it to be over. Definitely did not listen to the multiple versions of the same songs. 1.75/5
what a shit inclusion to the list
This is the two hundred eighth album I’m rating. After a long break I’ve come back to what I’m assuming is ass. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Dirge, Soul Auctioneer, Death Threat, Flying, Aisha, Lever Street, Aladdin’s Story, Broken Little Sister, and Neptune City. All in all I liked 0/9 songs. Not a great album whatsoever.
Less fun. Less lovin'. Still criminal. Very criminal to be on this list
A big no, not for me. But certainly atmospheric, so might play when I need that sort of moody atmosphere?
Total snoozefest, I literally have nothing else I can say about it.
By all accounts I should love this. Electronics, shoegaze, rhythmic noise, iggy pop. But the reality is this is nowhere near as cool as it thinks it is. Dirge opens with a rhythm box and guitar chords that slowly crescendos into a noisy jam. Soul Auctioneer is trip hop a decade too late. Death Threat has some very lame synths that might have been impressive in the 70s but by 1999 the Richard D James album had been out for five years, Autechre had descended down the DSP wormhole and Esplendor Geometrico had been doing dark, industrial rhythms for literally a decade. The second half is just some ponderous sixties organ shit and grunge? Not noteworthy at all. Everything that's wrong with post-rock, not a hint of self-awareness. We need to clamp down on this shit hard.
Not my jam
I genuinely thought I was listening to this for an hour, only to look down and see I was on track 3. It's a whole album of a guy making random sounds with the same 4/4 kick-hat-snare-hat pattern for the whole album.
If you like boringly repetitive beats from a band that all got Casio keyboards when they were 10, then this is the album from you.
Forgettable. 1.5
Sounds. Not pleasing. Not art. Not music.
Just so very unnecessary… 2/10
A century and a half of recorded sound and this is on a list of 1001 significant albums?
1 that all
It’s not horrible, just no connection. I never heard it before today and don’t feel that I ever need to hear it again.
With each EDM (and EDM adjacent) offering, I get more agitated. This is no fault of the good people who created this compilation (???). That said, Death In Vegas can go fuck.
I have listened to the album and couldn't pick it out of a lineup. I don't hate it, I don't love it.
Everything sounds the same on this album and as a result this just drags on and on making it seem as if it will never end. As a result, this sounds like the soundtrack to Purgatory in that it is extremely boring and undergoes very little in the way of change.
Music for an advert that sell perfume which smells like cat piss within 20 minutes of applying. But it's too late now... you're out dancing with friends. And every time you lean to speak to someone, you see their face, and you think to yourself... "are they pulling that face because I small of cat piss!?". It's gunna be a long night.
I listened to this at the gym, which was my first mistake. They had me with the first song, but it went downhill from there. Struggling to recall anything else from it now other than wanting it to end
I really didn't feel anything towards this at all, just typical 90's trite.
I don't want another ambient album. I wanna rock!
I...well...I hate this
Trying way too hard.
I appreciate that this won a mercury music prize so must be viewed as decent by a group of people. But absolutely not for me. Perhaps it could b a grower if I listened several times but I'm not prepared to do that. Not my thing at all.
Bad sorry
Two and a half minutes into track one and I am still waiting for the intro to end. I am still waiting for it to "do something interesting". I am starting to fear the "intro" is all this has got... I guess it is trying to do a Bolero-esque build... but they aren't Maurice Ravel, not even Jeff Beck. Tedious. Track two... this is tedious. Is that the concept, to bore the listeners into submission? Incredibly annoying vocals. Oh, no, it is nearly 6 minutes long! Mmm... "tedious" used about two songs in succession. That's not good. Shocking start to track 3... I am not wasting any more of my life on this. 1/5.
The only Death in Vegas song I know is Scorpio rising so I am looking forward to listening and learning more about them. The album starts with Dirge and its a great start, its dark and gloomy and builds well. I love it. Aisha was also a fun track. The rest of the album was just boring. there was nothing that grabbed you. I am shocked this made the list!! Favourite song: Dirge and Aisha are great tunes Least favourite: The rest of the album was just boring Album artwork: Cool cover
Are they running out of albums to pick? I feel like I’ve been listening to bands I’ve never heard of or just shitty music that sounds the same with each track
What the actual fuck was this... Soulless drone like music...
Nah
Pre-listening thoughts: oh boy more electronica… So excited…😔 Post/during listening thoughts: well there are some vocals and words but at what cost. That first song was a slog to get through. I just kind of feel like an impending sense of anxiety when I listen to this. Can’t explain why. 2/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nope Fav tracks: hm… Least fav tracks: didn’t like this at all but had to shout out Death Threat, one of the most annoying songs to grace my ears
Did not like it when it came out and not today either.
Totally sucks but not unlistenable
This album really did nothing for me. Too much repetition and too many remixes.
Terrible noise
oof the album
Elektronische Musik, ziemlich langweilig
It's bad when the singer sings, and it's boring when he doesn't.
This album sucked. I stopped listening when I realized how long it was and how much all of the songs annoyed me.
Album 535 of 1001 Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions (1999) Rating : 1.5 / 5 More electronica BS. Maybe a half point better than other from the genre I've listened to. Will suffice as background sound for a short period of time. Not much else.
Over 2 hours of boring ass weirdo shit. Not good weirdo, bad obnoxious weirdo. Do not like, do not want.
Boring. Doesn't belong on this list at all.
1 stjerne
1. dirge - 1.5 2. zoul - 1 3. death - 1 4. flying - 1 5. aizha - 0 6. lever - 1 7. aladdin - 1 8. zizter - 1 9. neptune - 1
One star from start to finish equals F-. Sounds like music for an alien invasion.
first album where i straight up skipped through the last tracks. actually so terrible i thought it would eventually pick up, but its so drab and boring, like what situation is this music made for, i truly cant imagine ever enjoying it.
Nope
Boring as hell, my god, were we just unlucky or all the album in the list are like that? It's a bad Mezzanine or Blue Lines by Massive Attack. Already a style I don't appreciate much, but this is at a new low.
Not really my type of music. Reminds me a bit of Muse
Not the kind of music that appeals to me nor has it managed to get a reaction
There is no way in hell this crap is one of the 1001 most influential albums of all time. Pure waste of time to listen to this crap. 00000/5
Repetitive. Screeching. Dark and depressing. Not a fan of this genre so its “magic” is lost on me.
altern. 1999, 1-2
Meh
This is not a good album.
Over 2 hours of mindless garbage!
Trash
I disliked this a lot. At one point I went to the bathroom during it and came back hearing a scream like sound and it was the music. It just felt like construction noise put into some ‘music’. Not impressed.
Rätisee keskitempoisesti. Mahdollisesti osoittaa arvonsa jossakin kontekstissa, mutten tiedä missä.
Interesting, but not my kind of music.
17/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 This list is hellbent on proving to me that electronic music sucks. Another one of those albums that keeps making you wondering when the thing will even start. I mean, the thing starts with Dirge. At first, I thought "oh cool, a guitar!" Then the guitar went on to do nothing interesting. Man, the track was long and boring. It was all downhill from there for the next few tracks. Aisha had a few interesting moments, if you ignored Iggy Pop's stupid monologue. The tracks that came after were a bit better than the earlier tracks. Whatever points this atrocity managed to earn, it did so in the second half of the album. This is not for me at all.
The album started so strong, with ominous "Dirge", full instrumental, dark vibes, all good stuff. And then it promptly became a bunch of boring shit. Dated on arrival. Blegh. Literally me rn :| Significant 20/54 Liked 9/54 Added 2/54 nonono
What an utterly boring album. So boring that I noticed it was boring. Some albums can be dull, but subtly dull, like you haven’t realised it’s finished dull. This one was just awfully dull.
i listened to 30 minutes, it was enough, because i thought it was only 40 minutes long, turns out there’s 2 hours of this stuff, it might be good but i can’t endure it i’ll be honest,
Boring af. Absolute yawn fest
Ili dosadNo ili nije gazba..y krene uzika i ocekujes dalje a dalje nema
I'm going to be harsh here. There's an overindulgence to this album. Starting with Dirge, there shouldn't be two minutes of feedback just to prove they can extend the song to five plus, or six minutes. It's boring and disrespectful. Seven minute songs are not bad. Bring something to it for the listeners. Take a cue from Stairway to Heaven.
1/5 Tenzij je onder invloed bent, want dan is het een ez 5/5 XD
this was a real nothing album to me. I found this album to be boring and a bit of a slog. a lot of these songs felt like they were just background music with nothing particularly interesting going on. I was expecting maybe something to build or like this album to go somewhere but it really didn't. I don't even hate this kind of music, per se, I just think this felt so uninspired and had no oomph. sorry, can't say I am a fan. I can confidently say I will never listen to this one again.
This is a lot like Klaxons. I can tell music is playing, but when it ends it's like - was there music playing? Thank god I looked this one up and didn't end up listening to 23 tracks of a 9 track album.
Didn't make it all the way through, but heard plenty. You'd think a band with the name Death in Vegas would at the very freaking least have some iota of energy in their music. Something slightly exciting or interesting about them, if asking for a single memorable song is too much. But nahhhhhhhhhh.
Brit electronica.
I could have gone the rest of my life without listening to this and been totally fine. Not very memorable.
Did not enjoy this at all. Derivative and boring.
Everytime I hear a weird and annoying album like that I hope, that it's the last one on this list. But a few days later there's the next terrible electronic noise album. Really getting annoying
This is dull.
Don't think I even know who this band is. Not an album I needed to hear before I died.
Radiohead ja Jarre collab
I do not like this Sam I am. I do not like this shitty album. Some of the songs start out well enough, but always suck no later than halfway through. 1 point for being different, 1 point for cool starts to songs, and 1 point for Iggy Pop. 3/10
God this shit was boring 1/5 Will add to playlist Neptune City (unenthusiastically)
I have never heard of Death in Vegas.. Electronica...I will give it a fair. shot.... Aisha....not bad The beat is propulsive....I can't argue that...and I suspect that is what it is designed for....for dancing.... Just not for me....
This was terrible lol, I couldn't even finish it. Very weird lyrics and below average music
Whatever this album is, it's one aspect of Cool Britannia that never made it across the Atlantic. And it's for a good reason. The duo are not The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Orbital, or even Sneaker Pimps. I guess you had to be there.
Eine vom ersten bis zum fünften Song unambitionierte und uninspirierte Platte, die ich danach gelangweilt ausgemacht habe. So was sollte kein Mensch hören müssen.
90’er elektronisk, dj, stort lydunivers
I did not like this. Dance music ain’t for me!
Wasn't a fan of this one.
Not a fan
Boring
Nothing enjoyable or noteworthy here
lol ok
I think other bands have had more successful results at fusing rock and electronica than these guys. I can see and appreciate what they are trying to do, and the wall of sound they create using guitars and synths is technically impressive, but frankly, aside from Iggy Pop's appearance on 'Aisha', there's nothing else here that really holds my attention.
Garbage
no just no. Going to pretend I didn't hear this
Didn't love it
Another album that's just not for me. I just don't dig this electronic stuff. At least not from the 90's.
Trying to be Massive Attack. Awfully boring.
why is this list so "english"?
