Garbage. Such a tough listen. Would almost prefer reggae

I mean, it's all been said. This is literal garbage. I mean it's actually the sound of garbage being smashed into other garbage. At no point did I think, "wait, is that music?" Because at no point did it approach musicality. Oof. I'm glad that's over with.

Two days in a row I’ve had noise come up in this list. Yesterday it was Napalm Death’s “Scum”. That was previously the worst rated album on this list….until this album took the honor from them. Both are horrible and feature screaming rather than singing. Napalm Death at least had amazing drums and guitars and I gave it a two star rating. This album has zero going for it. When I heard they did of cover of Moi non plus I was intrigued…. Briefly. It was barely recognizable, but still I would consider it to be the highlight of this album. 1.5/5

So challenging! Some cool abrasive percussion. So much screaming and power tools.

Haven’t given out a 1 in a while but this was well deserved. literally just recordings of heavy machinery and people screaming in German 😂 hilariously bad but there’s no way I could make it through the whole thing without out losing my mind.

What in the ever living fuck is this

ACHTUNG! SCHNITZEL! I was going to give it 1 star but I don't want any trouble from these guys. It sounds like they have the best torture chamber in Europe, possibly in the world 🌎.Therefore I think I'll play it safe and give it 5. Only kidding. It's unlistenable twaddle.

Kollapsed mind!

Interesting, but not interesting enough to distract from the fact that it's just not very good. I doubt I'll ever want to listen to this one again. Sounds like the live shows were a right laugh though.

I had this girlfriend at uni who was an intense Greek cellist who listened to Einsterzenden Neubauten. Or maybe it was the German's who came for some kind of summer language school when I stayed behind and worked in the halls of residence. In any case I got this on cassette in the late nineties and found it completely unlistenable then, even as a teenager with a modicum of angst and a recent B grade in GCSE German. I imagine watching Fritz Lang's film Metropolis is just as tedious and is also only done by art students who want to show off how clever they are.

The most unlistenable album ever, yet still I listened to it. FML!

Industrial, experimental. Ruido absurdo. Un 1 y porque no hay menos...

not music. It is something else. I can't put a name on it.

The industrial vibe of the music was kind of cool but this isn’t my style at all, I couldn’t wait for this album to be over.

Stupid noise

Uhhhh, yeah. No thanks.

This was a bit too out there for me

It's completely in German and I have no idea what they are saying. It is certainly eccentric as it is just random noises. There was no song that I would really consider revisiting. It is certainly not the worst album on the list but it is up there.

Nothing here I enjoyed. Noise.

This album turned me into one of those conservatives who always complain about modern art

I like some Electronic music. This is not it.

Is there tab for this? Seriously though, this is just noise and yelling to me. It actually put me in a bad mood listening to it. The only use I can imagine for it is a soundtrack to a sci-fi snuff film. I actually listened to it at 2x speed for a bit and it didn't sound any different.

Rough, raw, assault on the ears that is at times truly painful, and others, haunting. The early tracks on the album were not enjoyable. At all. Track 6, Schmerzen hören, features the repeated line: "Hören mit Schmerzen" which apparently translates to "Listening to pain," which I think accurately summed up the first few tracks. However, there is a semblance of music to be found in Kollaps. The later tracks on the album, such as Jet'm(which is apparently a cover of a different song) and the title track Kollaps, actually create something closer to what I would traditionally call a song as opposed to the grating noise featured elsewhere in the album. Other later tracks, such as "Sehnsucht" produced a more "spooky" and haunting sound that I actually rather enjoyed. I think it is important to note that the original release of this album ended at "Helga" originally, and would only feature a live version of track 3 "Negative Nein" appended to some CD versions. A 2002 re-release of the album appended on a bunch of songs from a later release "Stahldubversions." I listened to these songs as well and I found them to be much more palatable. I don't think Kollaps as an album was intended to have these tracks included, and for the purposes of my review I will be ignoring them. I would not call Kollaps an enjoyable listen, and definitely not something that one "must" listen to before they die. Some may even prefer death over the ear-destroying sounds. However, I did find some redeeming qualities and while it will not be something I re-visit, it was interesting to hear at least once. I dislike a 5 star scale as it leaves little room for nuance, but if there's any albums on this list that deserve 1 star, Kollaps has to be one of them.

Wow, wow, wow. Holy hell. I made it through the entire album. I'm at a loss for words and it's me. I thought of a few German jokes, nazism and shit like that, but it's Monday. Let's just move on the to next album. I really hope my Spotify doesn't start playing stuff like this going forward. This is definitely up there for the worst thing I've heard off this list. These guys and Suicide. Welcome Devin and Brendan

Okay yeah this is nonsense. I mean it’s German, but it’s nonsense

1 Goddammit. The first song in I was thinking “Okay, this isn’t THAT bad”, then starting with the second track it turned into an aggressively unlistenable mess even worse than that Suicide album we had, and worst of all, my neighbors probably think I’m a Nazi now. I try to be accepting of all musical tastes, but if this is your favorite album, I think you need to see someone. Welcome to the list, Devin and Brendan!

In the same “art” mould as Throbbing Gristle. Industrial noises. I don’t appreciate the art or hear any music. Glad I only took 30 second samples across each track so I got through it in 15 minutes.

Cool just the album for me this morning T_T. Literally the next song starts with a jackhammer. This album makes me want to crawl out of my goddamn skin. Music for people to chop their ears off to. This garbage is an assault to the concept of music, and its only merit is in its contrarian attitude. The listener is subjected to a sonic waterboarding experience. The best part is when it ends.

My ears are bleeding.

No, it sounds like something a nepo baby makes and expects everyone to like. It's shit, I don't understand how this was added to the list.

I've been as open minded as possible with this list. I've listened to every album even if I wasn't a fan to try and broaden my music tastes. But I genuinely couldn't get past 3 songs on this album. It was painful to listen to

Aivan täyttä paskaa. Levy kuunneltu kahden minuutin aikana. Miten tällästä voi edes julkasta?

Haha, toinen paska putkeen. Excellent.

Very different

Mostly a collection of random noises. Worst album I've ever listened to.

i got like 521 albums to go but i'm gonna die now because this noise robbed me of my will to live

Would give it less than one if it would allow.

Not as bad as some reviews suggest. But still not very good, stretches the definition of music.

I have no idea what this album is doing here. It's like a school project by some edgy teen. I didn't enjoy it which is fine but I didn't even appreciate it. Has no place playing to my ears

Moving along…

What an absolute atrocity for which I, as a fellow German, can only apologize for

junge was ist das😭😭😭 ciao

I think all I can really say is that I wish there was more actual music to this album. If the songs went somewhere or did something interesting I would have most likely loved it. Kollaps was a song I mostly enjoyed but the rest just didn't do much for me. The song with the loud power drill is really annoying. Score: 30 Art: 60

Trash compactor 'music'. It's badly recorded industrial noise with a guy screaming in German for an hour. I did not have a good time.

Proof that you shouldn't let pesky things like lack of musical talent and vision keep you from forming a band and releasing an album.

I’m losing faith in this shit

Don't know that I would call this music, it was really just unpleasant noise. There was literally a drill noise at one point. The first one on this list I was physically unable to finish

I understand its role as an important album in history, but this album is just painful to listen to. The clanking, rustling metal plates along with other strange assortments of sounds was unbearable and from a musical standpoint, this is truly the worst album I have ever listened to.

WTF! Not music!

Terrible. Just noise.

Hard no.

TURN THIS SHIT OFF

I am about 100 albums into this project and this is the first did not finish and the first one star. I tried to get through it but I just couldn't.

'The Space Between Mr. Frear's Ears' but it takes place in a Nazi occupied war zone in the 1940s. So brutal sounding that it's actually interesting. Erratic mechanical noises, zero concept of melody, maniacal German screaming, songs ending out of nowhere. A compelling experiment in pure musical torture.

You know how people look at an art piece and say "Well you can just feel what they were feeling when they painted this. Such emotion captured" and you nod your head because its really just feces squirted jackson pollock style on canvas. This is that, the musical quivalent of poo on a wall

Ugh 1*

I get that this is influential and the first of it's kind, but it is NOT my jam.

This is not a passable album. It might belong in a modern art museum, when one is open to the strangest of art. However, presented as a music album, this is a clear "return to sender".

Dude. I didn’t like this at all. Obscure German alt rock from the early ‘80s. Musically it’s a vat of noise cascading around the German lyrics which further a lack of musicality other languages nail.

Way too experimental for me. Cool to incorporate random industrial sounds, but this is just noise to me. Can't imagine ever going back to listen again to any of it.

I want - nay, demand - somebody to explain to me why this is something I should listen to before I die. I don't have a sudden appreciation for some random German guys recreating Stomp in a metal shop. This didn't unlock some revelation about my mortality or station in life. I'm not a more well-rounded person. I'm just annoyed and angry about the wasted time.

I don't think it's necessary to understand German to like or dislike this. I mean, I've grooved to Magma, and that's sung in an alien language. But I can say that this? Not digging it. I get the point of the songs and such, the punk mystique, but it feels too much like a do it yourself mentality. Can't find a recording studio? We'll record this in an abandoned factory. That's the punk mentality. Ooooo, what a stark vision. Yes! Really, it just sounds like a lot of noise. There has to be a beat somewhere. A groove. It's more crappy beat poetry than punk. It was short, at least. But.... nope.

Noise. Awful. Why is this even on this list? Should be towards the top of the worst albums of all times.

I did not enjoy this one

Best Song: None. Worst Song: All. Overall: The Wikipedia page credits one of the musicians for "noises". This album has to be an abstract art piece, not actually intended to be listened to. This is anti-music. The sounds contained herein appear to have been carefully curated to be as obnoxious, abrasive, and a-musical as possible. It is the senseless but intentional bucking of trends and norms - not to prove some interesting or intelligent point - but just to seem interesting by being contrary. This is low effort trash. My day is worse for having listened to this. The only positive is that I think I now appreciate all other music more for at least having the fucking courage to earnestly try.

What the fuck

No thank you!

factory noise? :O

Not even a little bit.

This was another album I listened to on a plane ride. I didn’t enjoy this much. Lots of yelling and clanging. Maybe some other time I’d enjoy this more. But today I was just wanted them to quiet down.

Screaming and shouting in German over improvised annoying sounds. Am I old or just discerning?

The recording quality of early Norwegian black metal but with an attempt to play punk with items found in a hardware store. It's very noisy with a jarring dissonance.

Perhaps the worst album I’ve ever listened to all the way through.

I tried, multiple times, It just didn't stick. Hard to listen to for any length of time.

alright

Fuck no

I did listen all the way through this one, and I hate try not to give albums a 1 star rating because there should be some value to listening to all of them on here, but this German industrial noise punk was actively hard to listen to. maybe that's the point but I would have a hard time recommending this to anyone. there were a couple cool parts in there but nothing memorable enough to give more than 1.5 stars and since this is out of 5, I have to round down.

Goal achieved and argument won – this the most unlistenable album ever.

No. No no no. Horrifying messy unlistenable garbage. Definitely not something anyone needs to hear, ever.

I went into this knowing it’s the lowest rated album on the list but honestly, while it isn’t pleasant or easy to listen to I was okay with it. I’m not a big punk guy but this was so deconstructed it was unique. In reality I’m guessing this was a bunch of college kids smashing pieces of metal together and if I spoke German I feel like I’d probably roll my eyes at the lyrics, but for some reason it was clicking with me. It’s by no means good but not deserving of being the worst. Also, I learned while deep diving on this album that the lead singer became the guitarist for nick cave and the bad seeds which is an insane piece of music trivia I can’t share with anyone ever because no one listens to nick cave anymore let alone a German experimental band

I was almost 100% sure this was getting a one the moment I saw it. I already knew what it was, and I didn't think it would come for me so soon. This is the kind of music that makes me feel like I'm dying. There were multiple times I thought my smoke alarm was going off during this album, but no, that was just how the song sounded. I could not bare to listen to this with headphones. It did help to drown out the other people in my house though, and I appreciate that. I understand how this was influential for industrial music, but I find that I'm not the biggest fan of industrial music. I hope these guys had a lot of fun making this album, because it sounds like they did. My favourite songs were Vorm Krieg and Rohrbombe.

Interesting…….

If you like pneumatic drills, the sound of a 4 year old hitting some railings with a stick and Hitler shouting at you for 40 mins then this album is for you. Its not for me. Art statement 5. Enjoyment factor. 0.

Uhhh... All I can say is that some parts were almost listenable. Most were not! I guess it's cool that they found a bunch of pots and pans to bang on in 1981, don't know if anyone had done that yet? But past that the whole time I was thinking "why is someone doing this to my ears?" Also why did it have to be so long? I actually liked Sado-Masodub. But that was literally the only moment on the album that I thought was kind of cool. Maybe I don't get it! But I'm just glad I never have to listen to this whole thing again.

For these 1001 albums I’m giving myself a pass to abandon one album before finishing it. This is that album. I can’t do it! This music is trying to murder me. On the bright side this really makes every other song I’ve ever considered inaccessible or grating sound like singing in the rain. Props to the band for really blurring the line between what is music and what is a mean, robot weasel who wants to kill.

I listened to a single song and that was pretty much enough to determine this album is not good

I like to try give everything a chance on this generator but this was not worth the pain

At my age, life’s too short for this. I did enjoy all 1:25 of the Jetaime cover & Negativ Nain was amusing. Other than that, it’s all I could do to ward off a headache. I think the nearest we ever had to a band like this in Sydney was SPK. Mind you, I did enjoy that one of the tracks was titled Schmerzen.

It was horrible drivel

Interesting but…

Don't listen just give it 1 star and skip it, it's not worth the pain

Industrial. Horroroso.

56 minutes of this shit? Hell no. …Haus Depöt lol

Gotta go full grandad on this one and say "that's not music". Trent Reznor clearly owes the man a pint but nothing sounds finished here. The few atmospheric parts were totally acceptable but the hitting a railing with a stick and shouting in German parts were unbearable. Next!

It's October and I now have the perfect album to play while handing out goodies on Halloween. Excellent! But there's no way it's getting rated higher than 1.

I was looking forward to hearing this because I wanted to see if it was as unlistenable as I remembered it. Confirmed. It's interesting that their name means "Collapsing New Buildings". Some tracks remind me of the collapse, others of the aftermath. This LP has taken over the #1 spot for the lowest rated 1001 LP. Throbbing Gristle is a close second. Industrial Noise is sweeping up!

I am someone who is a lover of noise, static and jarring music. I couldn’t find a way in to enjoy it and I couldn’t get anything out of it apart for the thought that this was just a load of crap.

Looking forward to Jon's review of this. I wish my German was better, I'd love to know what they are singing/shouting about. Borderline unlistenable of course. Not as bad as Soungarden.

Probably won’t be listening to this again

Listened to clips from most of the songs and that was enough. I can imagine this being popular with people who enjoy tearfully masturbating to the Hostel movies.

I just don't vibe with the atonality and bizarre aspects of experimental music

Not sure how this would fair in an ‘ask’ poll rather than some editors’ picks. A tough listen in any language

unfortunately could not finish, which might seem unfair to rate it so low. it was a sensory nightmare for me though, and felt more like rhythms and beats with extra noises. not my cup of tea

Could only listen to the first three "songs" before I had to give up. Came back to listen a few other tracks which turned out to be easier on the ears. Still have to say that this music is not for me.

This was weird. I listened to the whole thing but did not enjoy much of it.

noise music, very much not my thing
