Reviews (page 11 of 13)
beetje blues-achtig, klinkt prima
This is a great representation of white, bar blues that I don't like.
i didn’t list to much of the album, maybe just half of it. i think i am usted to a more modern style of music, but the songs bell bottom blues and nobody knows you are really nice.
Nä, faktiskt inte så bra som man skulle vilja med tanke på deras historiska betydelse. Layla är en fantastisk låt i tre minuter, sen urartar det i 4 minuters instrumental onani. Blä! En tvåa
I'm sorry, but "the most cookie-cutter dad-bait blues rock you've ever heard over and over" is not enough to carry a full double album. It's very clear why Layla was the flagship song from this, because it's the only one I really found memorable. Bell Bottom Blues was pretty good I suppose, and Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out was done way better by Nina Simone. If it were a single album it might get a 6 or even a 7 out of 10, but as is it's too little variety and too little excitement for too long. Fuck Eric Clapton, man.
That's enough, Mr. Clapton, please, no more today. Standouts: I Looked Away • Keep On Growing • Layla
Chápu proč se to jmenuje LAYLA and other.... Layla je naprostou dominantou. Žádná další píseň mě nezaujala tolik. Album je to asi krásné, ale asi nezvládnu ocenit tolik. Je to pořád to stejné dokola.
Definitely a combination of rock and roll and blues music. The songs were entirely too long though. Because the songs were so long, the album got tiresome and about halfway though I just wanted to shut it down. I forced myself to finish listening to it, in spite of my feelings about it. I'm glad that I did as the best song on the album was the last song titled, "Thorn tree In The Garden".
Ugghhhh...
I've listened to this before and left the experience unimpressed. The first couple songs made me think I had prematurely dismissed it. By the time I go to minute nine of Key To The Highway, I had calibrated my feelings.
2/5 - Layla is a great song. I have limited patience for Clapton in general, and the rest of this album didn't change that.
I'm not going to get into the whole debacle of separating the art from the artist. I'll let you all fight about that. And no, this rating is not an April Fool's Day joke. The band inferred in the title that this album is mainly known for one massive hit song, and not much else. There are worse things out there, but an entire album composed of love songs by a disgusting bigot, and womanizer should not be considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Favorite Track: "Layla".
cant even enjoy the titular song after an hour of whatever even though its objectively not bad
Okay. i might get strung up for saying this. But i just didn't care for it. maybe because its been so long since it came out, but its just not my vibe? the music is beautiful and i guess the guitar playing is really impressive... but idk. its just kind of the same song over and over again, and i dont like his voice. honestly? i dont even like Layla.
That was hard to listen to. Sure, Layla is good, maybe the guitar playing is technically good, but it’s just boring old blues
Layla is a classic, but the album as a whole did not do much for me.
Wayyy too long of a runtime. I enjoyed the first few songs but soon I got tired. Then I got REALLY tired of the album. Not bad though- just too long and repetitive at a point.
Yawn. Why do I want British invasion blues rock when I have the actual original blues right here? Least favorite Little Wing and it ain't close.
At the start I was like hell yeah blues rock, this'll be fun! By the time I entered the 10th minute of Key to the Highway, somehow still only halfway through the album, my enthusiasm had waned considerably
first time listening to this through. overrated for sure. most of this felt like middling white boy blues, which is a big time nah for me dog. also I forgot about the sappy af second half of "Layla" that goes a minute longer than the rocking part of the track and feels twice as long as it is. didn't realize Duane Allman was in this group. neat.
[Epic guitar intro] "I wanna fuck George Harrison's wife" [Epic guitar solo] "Oh, baby, I need George Harrison's wife" [Epic guitar solo] "Oh, George Harrison, I'm gonna fuck your wife" [Epic guitar outro] (Repeat for 76 minutes)
Sometimes, someone is that much of a cunt that it's impossible to separate the art from the artist and that's where I'm at with Clapton. It's a shame because this is a great blues record, albeit a bloated one.
It was good a lot better than what I was expecting, but way too long. Why on Earth would this album be a hour and 16 minutes. A HOUR AND 16 MINUTES HOLY SHIT WHY WAS IT THAT LONG??? IT SURELY WASN’T THAT GOOD TO BE THAT LONG? The guy is racist. Won’t listen ever again.
It was a mistake going down the rabbit hole of the person, his shit stances on life and his personal tragedies before listening to the album. It made the album a harder listen. It starts off slow, ponderous and somewhat boring. As the pace of the songs sped up, the album grew in quality. It has it's moments, but a slide guitar and the odd solo can only carry your average blues folk rock so far. An alright album that stands below is peers in the genre, with one all time smash hit.
Layla is a classic but the rest not for me.
So fine
Tjaa… Layla on hyvä biisi ja siinä se. Taitavat muusikot ovat tehneet levyllisen taitavasti soitettua varsin yhdentekevää musiikkia. 2/5
Not bad but didnt stand out to me
ein, zwei Hits, der Rest ist nicht mein Geschmack
Blues fatigue will not enamour me to this any more than I ordinarily would regardless. Clapton is overrated as far as I’m concerned and nothing I heard here changed my mind. I particularly dislike Layla - dad rock for boomers.
No thanks. Got bored.
Ironic that I could not wait for Keep On Going to hurry up and end. I guess that's how I feel about this album. It's ok, it's is not my cup of tea. Clapton is so damn problematic. Layla's a banger though. So yeah. 2 stars?
I cheated a little and looked at the reviews and it turns out this Clapton guy is super racist. he is, however, a pretty talented guitar player. That being said this felt very white boy blues and I didn't really vibe with it all that much.
No non mi è piaciuto sorry
It was good until I found out that Clapton is a prick so now it sounds like over pretentious noodling around. And I need to wait 1 hour until the only good song Layla is played. Can be compressed into a single and wouldn't have missed anything.
Now I quite like a guitar but this was a lot and got boring real fast and I don’t know, I was expecting something revolutionary the way people bang on about this guy? Layla is a great song obviously but I knew that before listening to over an hour of this.
1. Okay here we go. TBH i find eric clapton annoying, I have NO idea why, maybe that's somebody else's opinion that I stole years ago and never questioned I DON'T KNOW. I just don't think that he should be in a rock band. Also I always thingk Layla is Lola by the kinks? i think? and i DO NOT LIKE LOLA! So I've always disliked layla unfortunately because of the similarity in the name. I'm a moron i know. Anyways, this first song isn't too bad I guess. I don't think ive ever heard of derek and the dominos, for some reason i though they were like a jazz band from the 50s or something? I guess this first song wasn't terrible but nothing special to me. 2. Also, as I said before, I don't love the 70s. Okay I just looked up a photo of eric clapton in 1970 with short hair and clean shaven and he was a cutie pie. Clapton REDEEMED. The song's alright. Okay I actually like the melody in the chorus. 3. Okay, off to a good start, did aerosmith kind of rip this off? Okay now they've lost me. A little to jumpy for the intro. I'm a little bored SORRY. 4. Okay, had to give up on the last one a little prematurely because they kept doing the same thing over and over again unfortunately I didn't even like it the first time. This one's not bad though, off to a good bluesy start. The little guitar riff is a giving somewhere by the beatles JUST A TINY BIT DON'T LIE YOU HEARD IT TOO. And then the endless guitar solos with no discernible melody. Great. 13. okay, i'm not having fun so i've skipped straight to layla, here goes. okay i definitely recognize this riff. Okay i've heard enough though. I'm done. Thank you.
не дуже шосд якесь кантрі
A crap ton of Clapton guitar noodling 🥱🙄
Layla er et godt nummer, men bedre i Claptons cover. Resten var rocket, men ikke tilnærmelsesvis bemærkelsesværdigt.
This is as boring as it gets. Music that wifes get beaten up to in movies. Oh…and f*ck Eric Clapton.
It’s fine. Great 70s rock.
Gotta go through the same shit over and over until you get to Layla. And at that point, you're pretty much done with the album and just want to get it over with.
Not for me. I found this boring. I knew Layla. I prefer the unplugged version from my childhood. I much prefer Eric Clapton solo.
Mediocre. I have not enjoyed this album one bit. MAYBE I wouldn’t mind it while driving, but I’d probably hate it.
I heard The Band as a big influence on the first three tracks and thought oh maybe this won't be so bad but then the dreary blues widdling started in earnest and then I read about how badly ripped off Rita Coolidge was for the Layla coda and reflected on how there is always some new horrible detail to learn about Clapton's world. That cover of Little Wing is overstuffed and clueless.
Very solid. Fun to learn about the history of this one.
This could really have done with more work on the production floor. I get that you’re amazing guitarists, but every song doesn’t need two minutes of meandering duelling solos
Layla is een topper, de rest misschien wat saaier?
Very American rock and roll, very self-indulgent too. A lot of these tracks sound like jam sessions or displays of technical skill which have been lightly reworked into something that could be called a song, they don't sound like organic tunes. And it's overlong, I was prepared for this to be over halfway through side 2 out of 4.
Meh. Listened to 3/4 of this and had to stop, not my favorite at all
2.5 but he’s a dick
Possibly the middest blues band of all time. "Layla" cannot save this album.
A deeply personal album fueled by obsession and virtuosity, but one that often mistakes emotional excess for depth. The extended jams and indulgent arrangements dilute the impact of its strongest songs. While “Layla” itself remains iconic, much of the record feels weighed down by its own intensity.
Excellent musically and vocally!
all flops besides layla
I Looked Away - 3.5/5 Bell Bottom Blues - 4/5 Keep On Growing - 3.5/5 Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out - 3.5/5 I am Yours - 3.5/5 Anyday - 3.5/5 Key To The Highway - 2/5 Tell The Truth - 2/5 Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? - 2/5 Have You Ever Loved A Woman? - 2/5 Little Wing - 3/5 It's Too Late- 3/5 Layla - 3/5 Thorn Tre In The Garden - 2.5/5
Clapton is talented, for sure, but the actual blues are way more fun to listen to
Não gostei.
2.99
Is Eric Clapton the best example in history of the 'Fake it til you make it' phenomenon? I feel like he heard blues music and proceeded to play music like he was a blues musician until he got quite good at it. Then after improving as a musician and getting some attention he started playing guitar like he was one of the best, until people thought he was. Of course my feelings are incontrovertibly disproven by the opinions of far more serious people than me, his unassailable musical resume and collaborations. Speaking of feelings, Eric Clapton once, and may still, thought England should be reserved for only...never mind. I challenge anyone to listen to the Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix versions of Little Wing and still disagree with what I have written here.
Blues by whites… mediocre at best. Don’t care about the guitar legends doing this. Layla is fine… until it drags on and becomes boring.
I liked it but maybe a bit too the same, the songs didn’t have enough character in them for me.
4/10
Everyone sings their praises about Layla, yet forget to mention that halfway through the song it abruptly loses all momentum and drags out what could've been an amazing song to one that's mediocre at best.
Not my cuppa
Great sound. Incredibly talented musicians. Clapton is an ass hat and I can't stand to listen to him.
Layla and other assorted drivel
Lame
Layla is a classic, but the rest of this didn’t do much for me.
50/50
Non mi ha fatto impazzire, è quel rock/rocknroll che sa di vecchio. Ma c’è qualche pezzo che si salva
Really didn't like this one felt flat and not even ground breaking considering the contemporaries.
I imagine this is what happened in the studio....Oh my gosh we just laid down a banger with this new song Layla. Everyone is going to love that song so much that we need to release it ASAP, but we don't have anything else really ready so let's write a whole bunch of throw away background songs and hide Layla at the end so it sounds everyone forgets about how they listened to all these throw away songs for the last hour. Personal rant...this was love in the 70's, she left me, she won't stay with me, she won't put up with all my crap and just deal with all the bad things I do to her...how dare she! If she just loved me exactly how I am and let me do whatever I wanted we would have a perfect love. I liked the guitar in I am Yours and Layla is a banger (even if the lyrics are actually subpar). But I am just not sure they really save the rest of this blah album about love for me.
This feels like one long album of Eric Clapton showing how well he can play the guitar. I'm probably biased in general because he sucks as a human, but this album was boring to me and felt too self-indulgent. Layla is a good song, despite its weird roots and the saga surrounding it.
Love all the guitar - some great playing. Songs were not very memorable- Layla was the best one.
Not my jam. I really tried to finish it, so I skipped ahead to their most listened song on this album on Spotify, and hey! I know this song, it isn't bad! So I went back and finished the album. One good song, thirteen not my jams.
It's fine. There are some absolutely legendary tracks buried in here and I have nothing but love for Duane Allman, but let's be honest. It's 1970 boomer guitar noodling for the most part. It's a very excellent specimen of 1970 boomer guitar noodling, but I think there's enough of it out there. Some underrated highlights IMO are Key to the Highway, Have You Ever Loved a Woman, and Nobody Knows You. Everyone knows Layla, fewer people know how messed up the backstory is.
Not bad
layla es muy buena las demás no me mataron. Una onda a los beatles
Hmm.. not my usual taste of music
none stood out to me but i liked the sound, would listen to again
Very 1970s very late period Beatles influence. Naval gazing.
It was okay.
Not horrible but really not my thing.
There’s no reason this needs to be so long, other than self indulgence I guess. Eric Clapton ruins perfectly good songs by dragging them out way too long. Layla is a perfect example of this. It starts out so well and just devolves. This whole album is pretty much that over and over again.
Tedious white guy blues
Layla is the only reason to listen to this very generic blues album.
ok
nah
I got so bored about halfway through this album that I skipped to "Layla" to confirm it was in fact still good. It is, but doesn't rescue an otherwise bunch of meh.
Boring af.
Exactly the kind of music a guy named Derek would make
Found this very hard to get through, don't why it just doesn't do it for me
Oi kaip atsibodo. Be laylos nieko išskirtinai įdomaus.
A lot of people say Clapton is a good guitarist and that may be technically true. But all his music sounds like three drunk alley cats in a fight. The last two songs were okay.
Hey guys, I'm gonna make an album where I just play blues licks for the whole runtime, how long do we think it should be?
The moment the 60s became the 70s. Self-indulgent and overlong twiddling.
Not my thing, and although I always liked Bell Bottom Blues, Clapton is a bit difficult to listen to now.
A worse version of Abbey Road songs. This gets old fast. Layla saves this record.
Don't like the sound signature
OVERALL THOUGHTS 2.5/5 Some cool guitar stuff (Duane Allman apparently taking a lot more lead parts then people realize) but yeah it really did feel like some white dudes trying to make compelling blues music without any of the soul and emotion that should come along with it. Not the most offensive dad rock I've heard by far though. (maybe one of the more offensive dad rockers tho, dude stinks big time) STRAY THOUGHTS - Beatles ass chorus on Bell Bottom Blues - Neat that they're using a Tabla drum but kinda distracting??? - There were some compelling songs at first but mannnn they start dragging - People hyped up Little Wing, it's fine FAV SONGS: I Looked Away, Layla LEAST FAV: Key To The Highway, Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad, It's Too Late
Very accurate title. Layla and some other songs. Would give it 2.5
Some great guitar work, but otherwise pretty forgettable for me.
It’s better than the Cream album, but it’s too long, with few and far between decent bits. Layla is overblown imo, the riff/chorus release is undeniably class but that’s it. It’s too long. Too bloody long, stopped listening in the weird end-of-a-sitcom series bit. 2.1/5.0 Best Song: Bell Bottom Blues
L album
Layla is a tuneeee but doesn't negate from the fact Clapton is a racist and the rest of this album is quite shite
2 oder 3
37/1001 First listen. Layla and some other shit. This is like way back in the day when you hear that song on the radio you love and just can’t wait to hear it again and again so you save up and buy the album and then there’s nothing else on there that sounds like that one song. But you try like hell to like it cause it’s all you got till your next allowance. Well it’s streaming now bitch and I don’t have to try and like your shit so I’m Movin’ on. 3/10
Favorite tracks: Layla, Bell Bottom Blues, Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad? These songs are so irritatingly long, all of the songs over 5 minutes ended up getting skipped during Eric Clapton's solos. He is a good guitar player but boy does it get old. Also, knowing that he wrote this album in pursuit of his friend's wife, who he then abused and raped, made it hard to stomach most of these "assorted love songs". Layla still slaps, though
I wasnt super into this one. It was a little too busy and too muddled for me. Maybe I just don't listen to enough blues. Layla was my favorite song on the album, and I thought the guitar was really impressive.
Shoot me with a gun
Clapton can get fucked.
This was surprise. I was fully expecting a reggae album. It's such a reggae band name. What I got was 70 American rock that was so middle of the road I nearly crashed on the motorway.
its not good. not only that, it is way too long as well. the classic 1-2 combo.
I am not a Clapton fan. That being said this might be the least painful of his records on here. (Dear Reader, that’s a low bar) Layla is a great listen, especially while being chased by the police whilst high on concaine. I’ll give Bell Bottom Blues some love too. But man this record gets long in the tooth.
downloaded layla and little wing. meh
65
slow. chill. mellow. ok.
A lot of guitar Kind of forgettable Only great song is layla
Forget about Layla - who wants to listen to some heroin addicts play the ‘classic rock’ that will one day make fans of Phish and other jam bands bounce around the room? Everyone, apparently. Well, not me. I hear unimaginative blues covers and formulaic rock structures existing just to unleash indulgent, extended solos that do nothing but make the album boring and repetitious. Some say this album is “hit after hit.” I’d agree - if they were talking about the skip button.
Not a bad listen, just one that gets a bit old for me. Though "Bell Bottom Blues" and "I Am Yours" really stood out to me. Also the back half of "Layla" is so good.
Another album that I've owned, listened to once and never played again. It's safe, bland and beige! Everyone has heard Layla and probably never needs to hear it again.
ok
Like being invited to a party only to realise you’ve been kidnapped.
I don't really care for this.
The title song is the only real headline here The rest is a little too expertly played It’s a solid 3 but let’s call it a 2 cos Clapton is such a dick
Learned this was an old band that Eric Clapton was part of. The Layla song sounded cool. 2.7
Nothing super memorable other than Layla but 'one song an album does not make'.
I only know Layla and to be honest, I only needed to know Layla. The rest were boring and repetitive and the guitar wasn’t even that impressive for him being to GOAT or whatever they say. Even at the time this was released, it had all been done before.
A vibe Long songs Fire guitar solos
This would probably be a 3 if it was not so long.
Rating: 1.6 He stole George Harrison’s wife right? George should have beat his ass to a pulp ahead of time and spared us this boring, drawn out, ugly mess.
Eric Crapton.
Listening to Clapton noodle is tiresome after the second track.
Meh
i dont like it, its flled with loud drums and the lead vocalist just sounds so manly for an album cover that looks like this, its not soft enough for me unfortunately lol
not so assorted after all
Decent classic rock, much sounds the same, especially the guitar and bass lines sound very similar between songs.
That was dull. Even Layla is more boring for about 50% of it's runtime than I remember it being. I feel like I can't give an album 1 for just being boring, and they're clearly very skilled musicians but it just wasn't my thing at all. 2/5
2 for 2 long.
It's not horrible, but it's not great and got boring real fast. There's very little chance I put this on again in the future.
I read Eric Clapton's Wikipedia because I know people hate him and omg holy shit lol.
Odd choice to bury a seven minute version of the only great song on the album as the second to last track.
Krasse Gitarren, aber sonst...?
What a slog. Layla is the only thing saving this from being a one star for me. Fuck Clapton as well.
Está ok
The irony of this album is that despite Eric Clapton’s undeserved reputation as a guitar genius, it is the drummer who really shines. That is the only reason this album gets a second star. The guitar work is self indulgent, pretentious guff which gets old fast. A few tracks in and your heart sinks when you realise that Clapton is going to pleasure himself again. With his guitar. For several unnecessary minutes. There is one good track on this album and it isn’t “Layla”. This entire record is a shameless rip-off of the black American soul movement, exploited and monetised by a group of white dudes, of whom the most famous is a known racist, a sexual predator and an all round slug of the lowest order. Love Songs? I suppose that’s another irony. It’s all so unoriginal, predictable, boring and far too long. Even the title is uninspired. Did I mention the w@nky guitar solos? It’s like he was having an early mid life crisis and he wanted attention. That’s 76 minutes of my life I can’t get back and I’m annoyed by that. I definitely won’t be listening to this again.
It's OK, easy to listen to. Layla was fun to hear and its later in the album.
Boomer slop
American mainstream with a punk splash. Old Beatles sound / influence.
It was fine, but not something I'll probably listen to much in the future. At least not based off this first listen.
Holy guitaronie The guitars are amazing, but the album is a bit too long and doesn’t work as an album for me
Layla of course was great but the entire rest of the album was a disappointment.
if this album didn't have Layla this might of been a pure 1/5. I was sick of the album within 30mins of listening to it, and it just KEPT GOING ON. i don't like blues rock and man... it's just so generic and just had NOTHING FOR IT. took all the soul outta me lmao.
Pleasant to listen to, but did not get me hooked. Most of the songs dragged on too long for my preferences. "Layla" is a classic though.
I listened to about half and didn't hate it.
Yep, boring and way too long. Bell Bottom Blues is the best song on here.
Блюз-рок, типичный, но не интересный
I feel like I need to be a middle aged dad with a Strat that he sometimes jams on to really appreciate this album.
Clapton sucks. Most of this is ponderous trash. Only reason it’s not 1/5 is Duane Allman.
1. Bell Bottom Blues 2. Tell the Truth 3. Layla
The album title was an immediate red flag, and it unfortunately proved to be accurate as far as describing the overall experience. Having the album's supposed centerpiece "Layla" as Track 13, after over an hour of tedious, self important twaddle for the most part, is trolling to a sickening degree. It's seriously lacking in the quality control department, and ultimately comes off as pretentious above its station. Could very easily have been a 4 or 5 track EP at most. I'll stick with Blind Faith and what I know of from Cream, thanks.
I can't tell whether this album is overrated or if I need to listen to it more. I didn't find it that compelling, and Layla was nice but not spectacular.
4/10
I've never been a huge fan of Layla to be honest, Bellbottom Blues is the best track on this album and that's a push. Absolutely killed Little Wing, and not in a good way. Unfortunately I went into this with low expectations album title, Layla and some other shite we needed to back it up with to sell a whole album is not a good start to wetting ones appetite with is it?
I’m playing the man, not the ball here. But seriously. Layla, and perhaps one other song aside, this is quite meh.
With the exception of the last two songs, every song on this album sounds the same. I wouldn't mind too much as, while a bit bland, there's nothing too wrong with them. But the album is so overlong that it gets pretty dull.
Teilweise nicht schlecht, aber zu lange für meinen Geschmack. Nichts besonderes.
Layla was great, the rest was a lot less good. The singer was also missing some vocal ability to really make the songs on here work
Meh
Only coz Layla is a banger. Clapton is still a racist bellend.
This would have had to be pretty good to make up for the Eric Clapton of it all. It was not. Layla's a great song but the Little Wing cover before it was actively painful to sit through and the rest was aggressively mediocre.
So much guitar wanking.
Man. It might be because of all the amazing blues I’ve heard the last while but this album feels dull.
not very good
I really do not care for Eric Clapton.
I'm here for the song Layla and the song Layla only
Ugh, this just dragged on and on...and it was only the first song! Nothing about this album caught my attention, with the exception of "Layla", which was definitely the high point. But even that song carried on longer than it needed to. With any luck, I won't be returning to this one any time soon. Standout track: Layla
- Layla is good! - Love Songs, cuddle, Chill Playlist
Don’t understand the Clapton hype. this goes on for way too long
Congratulations Eric, you can play the guitar.
4 for Layla and the sound, 1 for his racist attitude. But I reckon that’s more normal amongst white male musicians of his generation than most let on. But he got drunk and said it out loud.
Nicht schlecht aber auch nicht wirklich Erinnerungswürdig. Viele Gitarrensolos... super generisches Rock album mit blues Elementen und nicht wirklich ein rausch zu hören. 2/5
Not a huge blues rock fan, Layla is a great song but the rest was mostly meh.
1 auuay - 1.5 2. bluez - 1.5 3. grouuing - 1.5 4. nobody - 2 5. yourz - 1 6. anyday - 1 7. key - 2 8. truth - 1.5 9. zad - 1 10. loved - 2 11. uuing - 1.5 12. late - 1.5 13. layla - 3 14. garden - 1.5
I actually fell asleep while listening.
Its alright
Not for me
Some decent, listenable songs but a lot of self-indulgent drivel. Way too long and just background noise.
usually i can separate the art from the artist, but for whatever reason i can’t with clapton anymore. from everything i have seen or read about the man, he seems to be an insufferable prick, and apparently he’s always been that way. many of the songs are too long and as crazy as it sounds, i think he’s kind of overrated as a guitarist.
Learning Clapton was in the group hindered this album completely for me. Highlights: Layla
While I was listening to the album I just thought "all the tracks apart from Layla are kinda boring".
Aside from Layla I just couldn't get into this one. I've never been into Clapton so that could be where the problem is
The most overrated album I can think of.
For some reason I've never really liked Eric Clapton's version of the blues. The man undoubtedly has skills for guitar and he's a decent singer too, but still there is something that irritates me. Feels like he's tryin too hard to be the ultimate blues man or something. If i feel the urge to listen to blues or blues orientated rock music, I'd rather stick to the original blues masters (or Hendrix or even SRV) than this version of it.
Cool signature style guitar sound but that doesn't leave with much as a bottom line.
Title track is good. Guitars sound nice, but still I have no stamina to listen this, it falls to background.
Layla is it's own thing, and it is classic, and it is good. The rest of this piece of shit album belongs in the garbage. Long, generic, annoying. Layla bumps it to two stars - that's how bad the rest of this is.
I may be guilty of an anti Clapton bias and that colors my rating, but this is really tough to listen to. It's just guitar assing off for the entire runtime. The only part of the album that deviates is the piano part in "Layla" but that comes at the end of the song near the end of the album. If you want to hear a pure Strat sound then this is for you. Otherwise skip it.
I’ve spent a lifetime – or at least a lot of one – being deeply mistrusting of Eric Clapton. I think my first interaction was via an ad for a live CD, one where “Layla” was the centrepiece. Something about the dude just didn’t sit right for me. Over the years, I developed that opinion – not through intentional exposure to his music … but rather more begrudgingly. Clapton was a fact of musical life, yet something about his whole deal felt disingenuous, inauthentic. And here we are again. A couple of exceptions aside – the guitar work in “Little Wing” especially is fresh, exciting and unexpected – this is another mass of Clapton I can’t get along with. Not because it’s bad, not really – but because I just don’t believe it. I don’t believe what I’m hearing loves anything as much as it loves itself. And that’s an ugliness it’s hard to look past.
God this shit is boring. Just absolutely drags. Clapton: a confessed rapist, a loudmouth racist who made millions off of distinctly black music, a phenom guitarist, and a severely overrated artist. Harder to separate the art from the artist when the art is also mostly dull and soulless, and his guitar chops don't make up for it. First couple songs and layla are alright (not great), the rest makes for a sleepy listen. An hour and fifteen mins, could you love yourself any more? Boomer through and through.
Started off well with ‘I looked away’ but most of the originals descended into over long doodles. Big Allman influence. The old blues numbers were good.
This album is at least honest in its title. It's a 7* song, surrounded by a sea of kind of middle of the road blues rock. It's certainly not all bad. There are a few great songs here, and a lot of the guitar playing is (as expected!) phenomenal. But overall I don't think I would ever reach out for this album again, which really limits my ability to score it highly.
Hard to listen to. Seems like theft and Clapton is a POS. He is a good guitar player.
Pretty much what the title of the album says, one hit song and assorted filler.
This album cover looks like a middle school doodle. Somehow the art sold for like 2 million bucks, though. Not a bad thing, but just sayin'. I'm so over these 70s bands! What a snoozefest! And it's over an hour, too. I like the name "Layla". Nowadays the kiddos are calling their faves "Shayla", which is another 70s song, as I understand it. Anyway, many of the songs are love songs about George from the Beatles' wife, so that's fun I guess. A 2.5, but since it was so long I will round down. Highlights: 'Keep on Growing', 'It's Too Late', 'Layla' (another rare song where the music is actually more enjoyable for me than the vocals)
I remember first listening to this whole album years ago after my dad played the title track for me, on vinyl. Back then, I didn't love a lot of the songs on this album, other than the obvious one. And I've tried again a couple times over the years, but still--it's just not there for me. I feel like the sound here isn't as groundbreaking as the Clapton's stuff in Cream, and the album overall isn't as good as Cream's best albums. A little too southern rock sounding perhaps. Some bland blues. Anyday has its moments and Tell the Truth, but Derek and the Dominos--taken as an entity--is really just a one hit wonder. His Little Wing cover should put people to rest on the fact that Hendrix is a better guitar player, but I suspect that argument will never die. 2/5 because I really can't justify the 3 even despite how good the title track is. This list is supposed to be about albums, not singles.
Everything just feels too long and too indulgent. Layla - great song for 2 minutes, drawn out to fuck for 4.
The critics had it right the first time. Indulgent, garish and manufactured, it's the kind of shit that could only come from people who think they can do no wrong, and that as long as they can be recorded the world absolutely must hear them. Look no further than the cover of Little Wing, which takes so many liberties in smothering a classic tune in pomp that it loses all character. It gets a star for Layla, but even that seems worse when put in the context of this album.
It’s hard to believe that one of the greatest rock songs of all time could come from such an uneven mess of an album. Layla (the song) is a bit of a microcosm of the album at large: Astoundingly good at the start, but then it just keeps going until the relief of hitting the end. Damn near all of these songs are Slowhand wanking off on his guitar, playing extraordinary blues rock, but failing to keep the listener engaged with the consistent variation and soul of tracks like Bellbottom Blues. There are high highs to be sure, but as a complete package this thing is a bit of a shambles, and I can’t go higher than a two. ⭐️⭐️
Assorted is the important word here. Assorted, like a box of chocolates, and like every other chocolate is dry and flavorless. This album is bloated, too many listless, pointless songs. Listening to this is like listening to a little kid share their rock collection, one rock at a time, and most of the rocks are just bits of asphalt or concrete, and the kid is a racist. The best song on here is little wing, and that's a cover. And there are other covers of little wing out there that are just about as good. To be honest, I'm a fan of this type of music... Southern fried loose jam rock? Love it. Dueling lead guitars? Hell yeah. One song with an extended coda? Yes please. But so much of this is boring and unimaginative... Derek is Eric is generic ha ha got 'em.
Layla? He means Pattie, right?
A white English shitbag borrowing "blues" sounds does not make an album important enough to be one of the 1000+. I've heard Layla quite a few times thanks to classic rock radio, and even then it's one of those "just sit through this and we'll get back to better stuff" tracks for me. Feel free to never listen to this before you die, friends.
Angrily giving this two stars because unfortunately Layla absolutely whips ass.
Listenable enough, and a couple songs are even close to being good. Clapton sucks though.
Quite nice to listen to. One megahit. I can imagine that this was a refreshing album at the time.
It felt like a decent classic rock album. Not much more I can say. Favorite track key to the highway 5/10
Psychedelica and long guitar solos still elude me- some quality songs, but I could not finish this.
I rate Little wing a 2 star because its like country and i don´t really like country but the drums and other instruments are good ⭐⭐. I rate Lala a 2 star because its like country and i don´t really like country but the drums and other instruments are good and the energy is to much ⭐⭐. I rate Keep on growing a 2 star because its like country and i don´t really like country but the drums and other instruments are good and the energy is to much ⭐⭐.
This album reminds me of like a scene in a movie where the main character is driving in like a desert lol don't know why. Other than that it is pretty good!
The more straight rocky stuff on this is ok (like Layla), but when they do blues rock it really rubs me up the wrong way with its soulless pub-rock cover-band energy. Clapton needs to apologise for all the rubbish that he inspired with tracks like that (as well as for being a horrible little racist who is rich thanks to black music). That kind of stuff reminds me of the band Blueshammer in Ghost World. The vocals on "It's too late" honestly sound like they're taking the piss.
Boring
Oh, it has been decades since I played this album, which I used to have on a double play cassette - now long-lost. As I play this album 55 years after its release, I mostly note the generally plodding nature of the music, no matter how excellent the musicianship, and how dull it is lyrically. I suppose it's the late game of the British blue boom of the 1960s, but where the blues boom ultimately led to innovative new genres of rock music, this album is isn't really that exciting. I wonder whether it might be better entitled Layla and Other Assorted Songs of Obsession. Clapton and Allman are great. Did it work to get Clapton back in a band instead of being some kind of mythic guitar god? Not really.
This one runs long and is too bluesy for me. Apart from the title track, not much else from it is memorable. Not surprised the album flopped when released and not sure why its gained acclaim over the years. Maybe the Clapton legacy and for being a sole release from the D&D this has climbed many list rankings. Makes 1001 list probably just for "Layla" though...1.64 stars.
I figured this album would show up on the list. I've never listened to it unison so I was glad for the opportunity. It's a pretty well known blues rock album that checks a lot of boxes with some jams and noodling from Clapton and company. I've never been huge on the Little Wing cover, Bell Bottom Blues is a good track and there's a couple other decent songs sprinkled into the mix. The album is definitely too long so I think a few songs should been trimmed to make it a more palatable listen. The main thing that becomes evident when you finish is that the song Layla is so far ahead of anything else on the album. I can enjoy an occasion blues jam every now and then, but not sure I need to listen to Layla beyond the title track again. Clapton was king at one point, but I'm not sure a lot of his earlier work has held up that well. He's a legendary guitarist no doubt, but I don't care to listen to a lot of his catalog beyond the big hits. Even worse so now that he has emerged as a grade A butthead. 2.23 stars
plus 1 for being ahead of its time
Manageable in small doses. During the first attempt to get through the album, I kept checking how many songs left... Not a great sign.
Without the piano solo in Layla, this album is chock full of tired blues riffs...the drudgery of Have You Ever Loved a Woman and repetitive descending blues chords of She's Gone. Yes Eric Clapton, like Keith Richards and others, helped integrate blues into 60's rock mainstream. Clapton held tightly to the blues roots while bands like The Stones went to a more experimental, hook heavy direction I prefer. Fittingly, the piano solo on Layla, was not written nor played by Eric Clapton, but was most likely stolen by Jim Gordon from Rita Coolidge. Thanks Rita. Eric not so much.
Just gets boring
On the one hand, good guitar playing. On the other, dull, boring, lazy and generic.
this was good fun, but didn't sit with me. i didn't notice when it ended, which is probably not a good thing.
Layla is a great song. The rest is meh. it's too long. Clapton is a twonk.
Gee, what a dickweed
Good album, won’t be a band without Eric Clapton. Good songs.
That's a lot of filler for an album that is supposedly one of Clapton's best. Highlight (apart from the obvious) was Bell Bottom Blues, but it's a low bar. And nobody asked for that Little Wing cover. Eugh. As racists go, I think there are 21st century racists are producing more interesting music than the 1970s racists did.
Album is OK but nothing spectacular most of the songs are very similar These love songs wouldn't win me over only song I like is Layla Fine as background music while working from home
Star for Layla I guess
The art 3/5 the artist 0/5 Half decent tunes for a racist
The irony of such a self-involved and low quality human being as Clapton having a track called Keep on Growing... Layla is a banger though.
I used to love Eric Clapton, then I learned he’s a massive POS and realized that his whole schtick is just stealing black music and claiming it for himself. To this album, it is 1.25 hours of the most repetitive blues guitar saved only by its title track and that is only good due to the coda that Clapton didn’t even write.
Ziemlich lang. Hat mich nicht gepackt, Layla ist der beste Song.
Grew on me somewhat, but still way to muso-noodly for my tastes. Not even *that* much of a fan of Layla tbh..except the piano segment, which apparently was at least part Rita Coolidge anyway...
average album
Ehh, it’s fine I guess. Not the biggest Clapton guy. I prefer him in small doses, and this album seemed to drag. -1 ⭐️ for off album activities. What sort of cunt steals a Beatles wife?
White guys sing the blues. 2/5
Ок, не мій кап оф ті
We just cannot seem to get over this English Rock bands can we? Lyla is obviously a great song, but it seems weird to have a compilation album on this list. Still .. I was able to get through the whole thing and it was mildly enjoyable.
не дослушала, по половине треков поняла что не моё,....
Seems like the pinaccle of boomer albums. Claptons ego is on full display. These are some pretty silly lyrics. I felt like the run time was too long for me, but I enjoyed many of the instrumentals and a lot of the guitar work. Rating: 2.25
I really don’t have patience for this kind of thing.
Creo que Layla es la razón por la que esté álbum es un clásico. Coincido con las críticas a ser un álbum de "blues" aguado y aburrido. Pobre Patti Boyd.
The background music at a dive bar that doesn't care what the music is. It's fine. Just not my favorite.
so mediocre, expected sth a lot better, even the acoustic version of layla (one that i have known first before) is much better than one on the album
Very long. And not enough variety to justify the length. Probably won’t listen to cover to cover again.
Layla obviously a banger but the rest is super boring and Clapton’s a cunt
Didn’t get through it. Wasn’t feeling it.
Maybe good for some background music to chill to
The first two songs are unlistenable. I tried, but I ended up skipping them, which I seldom do. When I started this project, I knew there would be albums I did not like, but I resolved to listen to them all, to open myself up to new things - except country. Because fuck country. If I’m being completely fair, it gets better after the first two songs. It’s still bog standard 60s blues-tinged rock. Which is fine sometimes, but the country stuff is unforgivable.
i have nothing nice to say about eric clapton. rip ray liotta.
Not my cup of tea...
Didn’t really grab me.
2.5 fine for what it is but a bit boring.
here’s how little i know of eric clapton; my initial thought was “oh that’s fun, they named an album after eric clapton’s iconic song and covered it.” 😆 but now that i’ve listened to it, i did not enjoy it. i didn’t know the 4 minute long outro to layla existed and it completely threw me off and i just cannot make friends with it, i guess i’ve only heard a cover. had it been a separate instrumental track instead, then sure. it’d be good i guess. but i just wanted to hear layla. nonetheless, the fact that layla exists on the album makes it a 2 and not a 1. the last song on the album that was more acoustic and not endless shredding was quite lovely.
This is #day145 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... it's the final day of 2024, which turned into a catch-up on January 1st, 2025, as I forgot to listen to the album yesterday. When I was halfway through it, I learned about Eric’s love of russia, its music, and, as he says, "the mythical side of russian history". This discovery, in light of russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine and the countless atrocities committed by russian terrorists, made me furious. You must have drunk your brains away, Eric. This album gets a 2 out of 5, only because of "Layla," the dog at my wife's parents' house, whom I named after the eponymous song. Looking forward to #day146.
Little too guitar solo-y for me and otherwise just not grabbing me.
Tittelen passer bra her - dette er Layla, samt diverse uoriginale blueslåter Clapton har skrapt sammen. Utrolig nok er Layla fortsatt kul etter over en time (!) med repeterende klagerock.
I tried to come to this with an open mind- I never cared for the song Layla, so was hoping there would be some hidden gems on here. It sounded like a lot of the same, over and over again-white blues with some noodley jam band bits thrown in. Technically not terrible, didn’t shut it off, but nor would I choose to revisit this. I guess I don’t like any non-Cream Eric Clapton. Unnecessary Little Wing cover was also wanky.
I find this album tired. I know the hits, but the rest sounds cheesy like when a guy who have never played the blues wants to show he can play the blues. Maybe it’s the era? The sound choices? Maybe I just don’t like Clapton.
Second groupe avec E. Clapton (le premier étant Cream). Pas très intéressant, même si quelques parties de guitare se laissent écouter. Et surtout beaucoup trop long ! Je ne l'écouterais pas une seconde fois. =>2/5
Was not conviced, even a bit anoying to listen too.
This very much felt like the same song over and over. I think perhaps the only blues I like are blues christmas songs played over a film scene with drunk santa's hanging out in bars.
Listened to this one whilst working, and I reckon 3 tracks in I think I'd actually stopped "listening" to it, it just didn't hold my attention.....until of course Layla appeared. Layla deeply buried amongst the rest of it, the change in tempo of this song with the piano really does last it's taste in time and I had to re-visit it along with other versions of the song over the weekend to really appreciate it- truly a classic piece of music. Album overall though lets the song down and it'll be unlikely I'd hear it all again. (sorry, would have been a 1 if it wasn't for Layla
It's in the description No need for much diction Layla is a great song but the album is too long Will not listen more let's see what today has in store
ok this has nothing to do with the music itself but i started thinking about how unfair it is that god took sterling morrison from this earth so young when it should have been eric clapton instead so then i got really mad at eric clapton for still being alive. which made me not want to enjoy this album. which is not really eric clapton’s fault i guess. but still…god if you’re listening we are ready and willing to trade clapton for sterling. i LOOOOVED the guitar on “anyday.” and “little wing” also jumped out at me but clapton didn’t even write the goddamn thing. overall this is just atrociously long—the self-indulgent lyrics combined with the guitar noodling and the album’s length really create a sense of tedium. “layla” is a good ass song though i will give him that. except for the extended middle part…again, this guy does NOT know how to self-edit.
Solid but nothing special
Doesn't sound bad, but the songs are long and repetitive.
The album mostly features the kind of boring blues rock I've associated with Eric Clapton for most of my life. The title track, "Layla" suffers from having a better, and more memorable, guitar line than any other part of the song. It was disproportionate how jazzed I got about the guitar and how much I didn't care when the vocals came it. "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" is a highlight. Having an Allman brother really helps a little, but not a enough.
It’s OK I suppose. Takes me back to the rhythm & blues club I used to visit in Watford in my teenage years.
One for the guitar heads
Was it really worth going through a double album of discomfort, as Eric Clapton plays through the blues despite his racism just to get to Layla. Maybe, I mean it’s the one song in the title of the album. Honestly, it’s the other song to give a shit about. The rest range from ok to forgettable. To be blunt, I’m getting sick of getting double albums. Especially those made by terrible people. Favorite track: Layla Other hits that are not Layla: Bell Bottom Blues, I Looked Away, Thorn Tree in the Garden
Eric Clapton you will start coughing in 7 days
Aside from "Layla" and some nice guitar bits scattered through, I found this to be a generic and mostly unmemorable classic rock album. In one ear, out the other. It also suffers from being way too long. "Layla" is a great track but not quite top tier.
It was allright, as good as an Eric Clapton album can be. Layla is a fantastic riff and song though I think if I had to sum up this album and Claptons career I would say generic classic rock Favourite song: Layla Least favourite: every song is a little meh Album artwork: I love the cover
Layla is a great track, but it doesn't fit the rest of the album which is bog standard blues with some top notch guitar playing by a known knob.
dry
Better than his solo album but not that much better. I don’t think Clapton being on the list at all is necessary, and if he needs to be, Disraeli Gears should be the one chosen, since it’s at least a decent album. But yeah this is just a nothing album to me
meh. its country, its blues, its easy 70s rock and roll. I listened to 1.5x through and didn't feel like I need to listen to again. Probably ever. Nothing to bring me in
Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs (that don't deserve a mention and aren't even half as good). It's way too long. One great track, a few good tracks, and then a whole lot of boring or downright bad tracks. Little Wing was horrendous. Sorry boomers. Also, as always, I must stress: fuck Eric Clapton.
Fav songs so far: Why does love got to be so sad? - features some more unusual rhythms from this era of classic rock. Sounds a bit more like the Doors with some extra guitar solos thrown in. Good combo. I’m not really a fan of classic rock so this album hasn’t really been my cup of tea but this song is great! Like previously mentioned, rock from the 70s isn’t really my cup of tea.
I'm only five albums in, but 4/5 have been from the early seventies, and 2/5 have featured members of Cream. this is some freaky RNG! from my very cursory research, it seems like Derek and the Dominos was created out of a desire for Eric Clapton to just play some music, maaan, regardless of how it would be received by the audience he'd built up with Cream and Blind Faith. given that pure intent, and the fact that I'm by no means a Clapton fan—apart from his history of virulent racism and conspiracy-mongering, I think he's merely a good guitarist rather than a great one—I approached this with as open a mind as I could muster. I've certainly enjoyed music by people I find just as repugnant as him (if not more), so I really tried not to let my personal perception of Clapton have an effect on my stance regarding this album. that being said, I am bored to tears by this blues rock sound! every third laundromat, grocery store and radio station in my area serves an endless rotation of songs in this vein, and I am so deeply NOT the target audience for it! I don't really have an issue with straight-up blues guitar playing, but if you're going to infuse a rock element into it, I'm going to need a lot more in the songwriting department! Clapton's middling guitar antics and utterly vacant vocal presence can only take me so far! I can appreciate that this is probably the best batch of guitar performances I've heard from Clapton across an entire album, but when Duane Allman smokes him just about every time they trade solo blows, it's kind of a moot point. Bobby Whitlock's backing vocals really get under my skin, which is a shame since I like his keys. 77 minutes??? I'd maybe return to three tracks here. this truly is "Layla" and some other songs. most of the rest of the covers are utterly banal, and the originals? imagine being down this bad for a happily married woman! I'd maybe be willing to look past that, the ugly core of this album, if the music moved me, but on the whole, it very much did not. I'm gonna go watch some B.B. King clips on YouTube. decent 4/10.
Layla brought this up from 1 star
Bell bottom blues and Layla are great, but the rest is pretty tough to get through
I just don't really care for music like this. Layla definitely feels like the standout track; the others felt a bit meandering and self-indulgent.
If I separate the man from the music, the album is ok. A little self-indulgent at times. Layla is the obvious standout. Eric Clapton is kind of a piece of shit.
Was relieved to get it finished. Songs seemed to go on forever. Enjoyed Layla though.
